- 0:00Speaker 1: It was up, it was down.
- 0:02Speaker 2: Simply, it was a great baseball game as the New
- 0:04Speaker 2: York Mets pull it out in the bottom of the
- 0:06Speaker 2: ninth MLB on TBS Closer presented by Vanda Pharmaceuticals. The
- 0:11Speaker 2: hero at the big hit Brandon Nemo. We will be
- 0:13Speaker 2: talking to him momentarily as we wait. Let's recap this
- 0:17Speaker 2: game just in that the Phillies jumped out. The Mets
- 0:20Speaker 2: did what they did on Monday night as well, surging ahead.
- 0:24Speaker 2: This time, we get the home run from batter to
- 0:27Speaker 2: take to make it a tie game, and then the
- 0:30Speaker 2: Mets win this one.
- 0:32Speaker 1: How are we doing? We're doing fine.
- 0:35Speaker 3: Those boys in red and gray right now they have
- 0:38Speaker 3: to fill the way I think that's nine straight nine
- 0:41Speaker 3: and it's the way it's happened. They've come out to
- 0:43Speaker 3: a lead and found a way to lose the ball game.
- 0:46Speaker 3: And if you're the Mets, as we talked about in
- 0:48Speaker 3: page and Curtis, we're going back and forth. The Mets
- 0:50Speaker 3: are saying, no matter what it looks like, you can't
- 0:53Speaker 3: beat us. And we know that, and you know that,
- 0:55Speaker 3: and that starts to seek into the psyche of a
- 0:57Speaker 3: team that no lead is safe. And when you're playing
- 1:00Speaker 3: like that, you find ways to lose games, and on
- 1:02Speaker 3: the other side, the Mets of finding ways to win games.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Pedro, this is a Mets team that from July twenty
- 1:08Speaker 2: eighth lost fourteen of sixteen. They've now won seven of
- 1:13Speaker 2: ten and the belief.
- 1:14Speaker 4: Is back, and you know what, the talent is there
- 1:17Speaker 4: to do that. And not only that, it seems like
- 1:20Speaker 4: it's bringing back memories. Remember how they went last year,
- 1:24Speaker 4: They right around this time picked it up and never
- 1:28Speaker 4: let go of it. And you know what, if they
- 1:30Speaker 4: were to have Hazley go, you know a little bit better,
- 1:35Speaker 4: just to all betterin Diaz at the end of the Boopen,
- 1:38Speaker 4: they'll be even better. I think the Mets are capable
- 1:43Speaker 4: of doing anything. I think they're going to fall sure
- 1:45Speaker 4: a little bit in the starting rotation, but once again
- 1:50Speaker 4: the Boopen, if they do what they are capable of doing,
- 1:53Speaker 4: they can pick up the slack for what the starters
- 1:56Speaker 4: are not going to be able to do.
- 1:57Speaker 2: And curtis the magic number for the Mets. The tie
- 2:00Speaker 2: break is now one. If they beat the Phillies one
- 2:02Speaker 2: time out of the text five games, they own the tiebreak.
- 2:06Speaker 1: If the two teams are tied at the end of
- 2:08Speaker 1: the year.
- 2:09Speaker 5: I think that's a good thing if it ends up
- 2:11Speaker 5: being tied, but they're just still trying to go ahead
- 2:13Speaker 5: and secure a playoff spot. I think, forget about if
- 2:16Speaker 5: we're tied with the Phillies or any other team that
- 2:18Speaker 5: it might hold a tiebreaker against. Get yourself to the postseason,
- 2:23Speaker 5: and then at that everybody's zero zero and everyone has
- 2:25Speaker 5: a shot.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Thirty thousand feet these two teams, the Phillies had been
- 2:28Speaker 2: riding high, the Mets were in a slump.
- 2:30Speaker 1: It feels like that's changing what are you seeing from
- 2:33Speaker 1: your perspective.
- 2:33Speaker 5: It's such a unique perspective because they're almost like identically
- 2:37Speaker 5: matched teams in so many statistical categories, whether it's average,
- 2:42Speaker 5: whether it's era, whether it's run scored, whether it's homers,
- 2:45Speaker 5: whether it's stolen bases, whether it's superstars. But for some reason,
- 2:49Speaker 5: head to head, especially when they come to City Field,
- 2:52Speaker 5: they just had the edge over.
- 2:53Speaker 1: The Phillies for whatever reason it is.
- 2:55Speaker 5: I'm not sure if it's the dugouts, I'm not sure,
- 2:57Speaker 5: if it's the hotels. I'm not sure if it's the
- 2:59Speaker 5: way they travel there, right, but there's something in certain
- 3:02Speaker 5: ballparks that happened to get to certain teams and right
- 3:04Speaker 5: now it's City Field with the Phillies.
- 3:06Speaker 2: The Phillies they fall again. They've now lost nine in
- 3:09Speaker 2: a row at City Field. The Mets, as I mentioned,
- 3:11Speaker 2: have won seven of ten. And the hero for tonight's
- 3:14Speaker 2: game Brandon Nimmo with the walk off single.
- 3:18Speaker 1: He ha is doused, he is covered in water.
- 3:20Speaker 2: Congratulations, you're facing one hundred and two mile per hour fastballs.
- 3:25Speaker 2: How did it feel to celebrate with the team and
- 3:27Speaker 2: beat the Phillies yet again?
- 3:30Speaker 6: You felt amazing, you know, to be able to come
- 3:34Speaker 6: back after you know, they hit the big home run
- 3:37Speaker 6: there to tie up the game, and you know, be
- 3:40Speaker 6: able to win at the bottle of the ninth and
- 3:42Speaker 6: Diaz doing an unbelievable job coming in for us for
- 3:45Speaker 6: two innings. You know, just can't say enough good things
- 3:49Speaker 6: about him. He's been amazing for us this year. And yeah,
- 3:52Speaker 6: it felt good. I mean, honestly, it goes hats off
- 3:55Speaker 6: to the guys in front of me. I mean, Marte
- 3:58Speaker 6: getting things started, putting the barrel on the ball, you know,
- 4:00Speaker 6: getting the base hit. Then you know Pete getting getting
- 4:03Speaker 6: a huge base hit there. You know there's a chance
- 4:06Speaker 6: for you know, if it goes right to somebody, it's
- 4:08Speaker 6: a double play, and you know it's really tough to
- 4:10Speaker 6: get things going from there. And he puts a barrel
- 4:12Speaker 6: on the ball, good things happen. And then Brett, you know,
- 4:15Speaker 6: having a great at bat there, that's a young guy
- 4:17Speaker 6: coming through in a huge situation, could try and do
- 4:19Speaker 6: too much, but just zoning him up able to put
- 4:22Speaker 6: the bat on the ball and you know, get that
- 4:24Speaker 6: little hit to be able to make my job a
- 4:26Speaker 6: whole lot easier than all I have to do is
- 4:28Speaker 6: find the barrel and you know a lot of good
- 4:31Speaker 6: things will happen after that. So honestly, the at bats
- 4:34Speaker 6: in front of me are what won the game. You know,
- 4:36Speaker 6: made my at bat so much easier. And you know,
- 4:39Speaker 6: just really really proud of these guys. They just keep
- 4:42Speaker 6: fighting until until they finally, you know, the game ends.
- 4:45Speaker 6: It's just unbelievable job by by the offense.
- 4:48Speaker 4: Tonight, Brendon, this is Pedro. And I'm curious to know
- 4:53Speaker 4: because this is not just a more small portion of
- 4:56Speaker 4: games that you guys have bitten the Philadelphia fa Is
- 5:01Speaker 4: it just me or you guys seem to be more
- 5:03Speaker 4: comfortable the more you play them, and that's probably why
- 5:06Speaker 4: you guys are getting those results.
- 5:09Speaker 6: Yeah, no, no, definitely. I mean, hey, we've played the
- 5:11Speaker 6: Phillies a lot, and so we're very familiar with each other.
- 5:14Speaker 6: And you know, when you get familiar with each other,
- 5:17Speaker 6: it just comes down to execution. You know what the
- 5:19Speaker 6: other side's trying to do, and so you're just trying
- 5:21Speaker 6: to match up with them and go toe to toe
- 5:23Speaker 6: and see who can execute better. And you know, I've
- 5:25Speaker 6: been really proud the guys have been able to execute
- 5:28Speaker 6: amazing even come back from adversity. And that's the thing.
- 5:31Speaker 6: You know, our guys know that we're never out of
- 5:33Speaker 6: a game. And you know, when we're playing the Phillies,
- 5:36Speaker 6: when know we're gonna get good baseball. So you know,
- 5:38Speaker 6: it gets you up even more. So you know, this
- 5:40Speaker 6: is two heavyweights going at it. It's really fun baseball.
- 5:43Speaker 6: I mean, you guys know all about especially you paidro Man.
- 5:45Speaker 6: I mean, you've been here, you've done that. You know
- 5:48Speaker 6: how exciting it is to play, you know, big time baseball.
- 5:50Speaker 6: And it's August now, you know, we're getting into September,
- 5:52Speaker 6: like this is big time baseball, and the guys are
- 5:54Speaker 6: getting up for it.
- 5:56Speaker 3: Run in great jobs and my great bat. You guys
- 5:58Speaker 3: have fought. I want to ask what is it like
- 6:02Speaker 3: for those who don't know to be in a situation
- 6:04Speaker 3: where you've had a verse through and you went through
- 6:06Speaker 3: it last year and you saw that you can get through,
- 6:09Speaker 3: and you kind of go through it again this year
- 6:11Speaker 3: and you face the team that's in front of you.
- 6:13Speaker 3: You got through it once and you're doing it again.
- 6:15Speaker 3: How do you feel as you come into the close
- 6:16Speaker 3: of the season knowing, Okay, now it's time to go,
- 6:19Speaker 3: there's a there's a time of play, and there's a
- 6:21Speaker 3: time to go, and you guys are seen to find
- 6:23Speaker 3: out that chemistry.
- 6:25Speaker 6: Yeah, you know, I think just looking at the seasons
- 6:28Speaker 6: as a marathon and not a sprint, and knowing that,
- 6:31Speaker 6: you know, being really honest with yourselves and knowing that, hey,
- 6:34Speaker 6: some tough times are probably gonna come, but we're we're
- 6:36Speaker 6: gonna take it one game at a time and we're
- 6:38Speaker 6: gonna rise out of this thing. Just want one step
- 6:40Speaker 6: at a time, one strike at a time, one pitch
- 6:42Speaker 6: at a time, and honestly, that's that's how we're taking
- 6:45Speaker 6: this this series and uh, these games against the Phillies
- 6:48Speaker 6: all we know is that you know, hey, this is
- 6:49Speaker 6: the team in front of us right now and we're
- 6:51Speaker 6: trying to We're just trying to take, you know, win
- 6:54Speaker 6: one pitch at a time and try and go one
- 6:56Speaker 6: to know for the day. And if we can do that,
- 6:58Speaker 6: you know, then we like our chances and into the
- 7:00Speaker 6: end of the postseason. But you know, we know that
- 7:02Speaker 6: all you need is to foot in the door. Last
- 7:04Speaker 6: year we made it by a tiebreaker, and you know,
- 7:06Speaker 6: we ended up making it all the way to the
- 7:07Speaker 6: NLC has two wins away from the World Series, and
- 7:10Speaker 6: that's our ultimate goal. And uh, I think you know,
- 7:12Speaker 6: with the adversity that we faced last year, it give
- 7:14Speaker 6: us a lot of confidence heading into this to just
- 7:16Speaker 6: keep things small and keep going one pitch at a time.
- 7:20Speaker 5: Nimo, what's going on this is Grandy, congratulations on the
- 7:23Speaker 5: walk off hit. Typically in those moments, everybody's rushing to
- 7:27Speaker 5: you to talk to you. But I noticed specifically you
- 7:30Speaker 5: went to Marte and was.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Talking to him.
- 7:33Speaker 5: Would you mind sharing with us what you were saying
- 7:34Speaker 5: to him when all the spotlight should have been on
- 7:37Speaker 5: you in that moment.
- 7:39Speaker 6: Now, of course, and Grandy, I appreciate you being my mentor. Man,
- 7:43Speaker 6: you were always so good to me here. But you know,
- 7:47Speaker 6: all I told Marte was we won the game because
- 7:51Speaker 6: of you. This wasn't me. We won the game because
- 7:54Speaker 6: of you, because if you're at bat, because of you
- 7:55Speaker 6: getting us started. And so I just wanted to put
- 7:58Speaker 6: the spotlight back on him and again Pete and Beatty,
- 8:02Speaker 6: because they all made my job so much easier. We
- 8:04Speaker 6: won the game because of their at bats. And so
- 8:06Speaker 6: I was making sure Marte knew that that that I
- 8:09Speaker 6: understood that we won the game because of him and
- 8:11Speaker 6: because of his at bat and getting a started. That's
- 8:13Speaker 6: a tough right on right match up there, and you know,
- 8:15Speaker 6: he just sent a bullet right back of the middle.
- 8:17Speaker 6: So I was letting him know that we won the
- 8:19Speaker 6: game because of him.
- 8:20Speaker 1: Another big game for the Mets.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Those five through nine batters, they had three RBIs and
- 8:25Speaker 2: the hero of the game, Brandon Nemo, had two of them. Congratulations, man,
- 8:28Speaker 2: go enjoy it, stay healthy, bron.
- 8:30Speaker 6: Thank you, thank you so much. Get it all right,
- 8:34Speaker 6: thanks guys, Let's go much.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Man. So that was your guy, a a young Nemo.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Did you teach him? Tell us what you taught him? Hey,
- 8:41Speaker 1: the big.
- 8:42Speaker 5: Thing is it is a team effort, and I think
- 8:44Speaker 5: he demonstrated that talking to all those guys and everyone
- 8:47Speaker 5: does just their job and passes it to the next person.
- 8:51Speaker 5: It makes the next person's job that much easier.
- 8:53Speaker 1: And one of the big.
- 8:54Speaker 5: Things he said, focus on today, go one and O today.
- 8:57Speaker 5: You can't catch the Phillies in one game, but you
- 9:00Speaker 5: can win one game, and you can cut into it,
- 9:02Speaker 5: and you can win one at back and get closer
- 9:04Speaker 5: and closer to it. And that's the message that he's
- 9:06Speaker 5: been relaying to the rest of the team. And you
- 9:08Speaker 5: saw that again tonight.
- 9:09Speaker 2: And we saw it in that monster fifth inning. Let's
- 9:12Speaker 2: look at that one more time. The Phillies jumped up
- 9:14Speaker 2: to a two to zero lead and they kept in
- 9:16Speaker 2: Lozardo and that's when it seemed like the wheels started
- 9:19Speaker 2: to fall off.
- 9:20Speaker 1: Jimmy, what did you see here from the Mets in
- 9:22Speaker 1: the bottom of.
- 9:22Speaker 3: The fifth Well, first of all, starting off the in
- 9:24Speaker 3: and with a two hit by pitch, and that just
- 9:26Speaker 3: put everybody in the mood. You can see j C
- 9:28Speaker 3: see Lozardo. Everybody got frustrated. And if you're on the
- 9:31Speaker 3: other side of that, you know that one three pass,
- 9:34Speaker 3: you one swing away. From time to game. You also
- 9:36Speaker 3: start going down the metstro saying, hey, we've done this before,
- 9:40Speaker 3: one and bad at a time, one pitch at a time.
- 9:42Speaker 3: They scored four runs before they made the first out,
- 9:45Speaker 3: and a fifth run was produced on a sacrifice fly.
- 9:48Speaker 3: So we talked about it, and you hear Brandon talking
- 9:51Speaker 3: about it. They're not afraid to be in these situations.
- 9:54Speaker 3: They're very comfortable. As Pedro asked, they know that there's
- 9:57Speaker 3: no lead safe with them. And I think as Wizardo
- 10:00Speaker 3: and Thompson we talk about, you know, we always talk
- 10:03Speaker 3: about the numbers and analytics and how we don't like them.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Sometimes it worked for you. I think there's may have
- 10:08Speaker 3: been a situation where you're looking at Lozardo. He wasn't
- 10:10Speaker 3: sharp all night long. You want to try to get
- 10:13Speaker 3: the guy to win. I understand that, but in this
- 10:15Speaker 3: situation where you've lost eight in a row. Now we
- 10:17Speaker 3: can always second guests afterwards, but he's not out of sharpest.
- 10:21Speaker 3: We have a two run league, Maybe we go to
- 10:23Speaker 3: our bullpen and get somebody a fresh start. He's done
- 10:25Speaker 3: his job. He kept us in the game. He's laboring tonight.
- 10:28Speaker 3: That's why they've built bullpens. Starting it at about the
- 10:30Speaker 3: fifty sixth inning, because they have super arms and we
- 10:33Speaker 3: have some arms in that bullpen that could have.
- 10:35Speaker 1: Bridged it for us.
- 10:36Speaker 4: And I was quick to mention that Max, you know,
- 10:41Speaker 4: and to you label about Luzardo my teeing out seems
- 10:45Speaker 4: like every single pitch he threw in the first two innings,
- 10:49Speaker 4: and it came back to bite him exactly. Even though
- 10:52Speaker 4: he settled down and he looked a lot more relaxed,
- 10:55Speaker 4: he actually looked to me like he was fatigued a
- 10:58Speaker 4: little bit in that inning. And those are the things
- 11:01Speaker 4: that the manager and the pitching coaches need to use
- 11:05Speaker 4: sometimes their baseball journey and experience to see those things
- 11:11Speaker 4: when your pitcher, Yes, he did whatever he could possibly
- 11:15Speaker 4: do to keep you in the game, but it was
- 11:17Speaker 4: time to probably give him a little break because he
- 11:20Speaker 4: looked fatigued in the fifteen inning. And I know that
- 11:23Speaker 4: they yesterday were forced to use a lot of people.
- 11:26Speaker 4: But those are things that you read and only baseball
- 11:30Speaker 4: people can read. And I kept saying it to you
- 11:32Speaker 4: Gmail laboring, he's laboring the first two innings. It's like
- 11:36Speaker 4: he's backing out.
- 11:38Speaker 2: You're also to write a wizardo You're like, he keeps
- 11:40Speaker 2: trying to get him out with the slider. The sweeper
- 11:44Speaker 2: just throw the heat. They can't catch up to it.
- 11:46Speaker 2: But it didn't matter who was pitching. Pete Alonso was
- 11:49Speaker 2: catching up to everything. Maybe if you talk to Frenchiet
- 11:52Speaker 2: he get four hits, but Alonso did it yet again, and.
- 11:55Speaker 1: Don't let anyone be on base.
- 11:56Speaker 5: When Alonzo's up, it's like he just relaxes and calms
- 12:00Speaker 5: and shrinks the zone, makes you come to him, and
- 12:03Speaker 5: he talked about it. He hasn't had the most success
- 12:06Speaker 5: against the Zara, he's going to change something. Well, whatever
- 12:08Speaker 5: he changed work, gets the little dink hit earlier, gets
- 12:11Speaker 5: the second hit, bases loaded situation right here. That was
- 12:15Speaker 5: enough just to go ahead and wake up City field
- 12:18Speaker 5: to know that they're back in this ball game. But
- 12:20Speaker 5: it's all those situations with runners on base where he
- 12:23Speaker 5: just dials in lets the ball get a little bit
- 12:26Speaker 5: deeper in the zone, like Jimmy was able to demonstrate
- 12:28Speaker 5: on the tee and use that two and forty five
- 12:31Speaker 5: pound body of him, that polar bear body, to know
- 12:34Speaker 5: that he's got strength and can go to anywhere in
- 12:36Speaker 5: the field and be successful.
- 12:38Speaker 1: They did it.
- 12:38Speaker 2: With the bats, and then still though the Phillies came back,
- 12:41Speaker 2: Harrison Bader hits that home run, a towering shot to
- 12:44Speaker 2: left field, and the Mets call on Edwin Diz. Five batters,
- 12:49Speaker 2: four strikeouts, gets to win. An incredible performance.
- 12:52Speaker 4: And that's what makes the Mets so dangers, is that
- 12:55Speaker 4: they don't have hastily doing what he's.
- 12:58Speaker 1: Supposed to do.
- 12:59Speaker 4: This guy is is as good as Edwin Diaz when
- 13:02Speaker 4: he's on.
- 13:03Speaker 1: Yeah, when he was on the Cardinals, he was cruised exactly.
- 13:05Speaker 4: So if you get those two guys but the last
- 13:08Speaker 4: two innings and you get the Mets to continue to
- 13:10Speaker 4: do what they have been doing, which is playing with
- 13:14Speaker 4: mambole when they have to and just getting the middle
- 13:16Speaker 4: ground bow, you'll see it. Not even the polar Bear
- 13:20Speaker 4: does a lot more than he needs to do. He finds,
- 13:23Speaker 4: you know, pitches in the track down he isn't the
- 13:26Speaker 4: right field, He goes into gap and if you don't
- 13:28Speaker 4: behave he might take you deep with the basis loaded.
- 13:31Speaker 4: But they try to do the things that they do
- 13:33Speaker 4: to win bowl games, and they did it last year
- 13:36Speaker 4: at this point, Yeah, and they see him like they
- 13:39Speaker 4: know how they got it done. And They're going to
- 13:41Speaker 4: continue to do that.
- 13:43Speaker 2: That is the question with Helsley going forward. I have
- 13:45Speaker 2: questions for two relievers before we go to break. Helsley
- 13:48Speaker 2: was like one of the biggest relievers they got in
- 13:50Speaker 2: this trade deadline. He's now pitched seven and two thirds
- 13:53Speaker 2: and let up fourteen runs and shorten the Mets, and
- 13:56Speaker 2: the questions are now there for Durant Lewis first save
- 13:59Speaker 2: on Friday, came out today, let up four singles and
- 14:02Speaker 2: he concerned there or is that something you think he
- 14:04Speaker 2: can figure?
- 14:05Speaker 3: Oh?
- 14:05Speaker 1: Not really.
- 14:05Speaker 3: I mean a safe situation and a whole situation is
- 14:09Speaker 3: completely different. Got blown safe and not holding the leader
- 14:12Speaker 3: that I've seen closes go through it. They have the
- 14:14Speaker 3: lead of something and I don't know Pedro knows because
- 14:17Speaker 3: he's coming out the bullpen. It's a little little click
- 14:19Speaker 3: that it's time to close the game. As opposed to
- 14:22Speaker 3: what is my role. I'm just here getting the in
- 14:25Speaker 3: and in and to get the hold. And as hard
- 14:27Speaker 3: to explain, Souse, I've never been in a bullpen. I
- 14:30Speaker 3: am not concerned. His stuff is still there. Look, it
- 14:32Speaker 3: doesn't matter who you are, how great you are, you'ren't
- 14:34Speaker 3: gonna go through times where you're making pitches and there
- 14:36Speaker 3: getting hits and we're seeing that. I mean a couple
