Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Here's your host, Alex Garrett.
- 0:06Speaker 2: All right, well, it's been a busy week, whether it
- 0:08Speaker 2: was the reach for a Star luncheon or even a
- 0:10Speaker 2: quick trip to the er and dealing with a stomach
- 0:13Speaker 2: scar issue.
- 0:15Speaker 1: We're back on track for now.
- 0:17Speaker 2: I'm Alex Garrett One leg Up Network, and I haven't
- 0:21Speaker 2: been able to do a one leg up on news,
- 0:23Speaker 2: but I want to say I didn't tell you so,
- 0:25Speaker 2: but maybe I told you so.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Because guess what.
- 0:30Speaker 2: Matt Gates with drew his nomination a week after I
- 0:36Speaker 2: went on this podcast and basically said, no sane person
- 0:40Speaker 2: would he would confirm Mat Gates, and.
- 0:43Speaker 1: I feel like I was vindicated with that, and thanks to.
- 0:46Speaker 2: Ryan Pigano for his shutout on PEG's perspective as well.
- 0:53Speaker 1: I'll link that episode in the description below. And Pam
- 0:58Speaker 1: Bomb is.
- 0:59Speaker 2: A great choice I think for aging. I think she'll
- 1:02Speaker 2: get confirmed with Flying Colors.
- 1:05Speaker 1: But the other.
- 1:06Speaker 2: News stories involves the Scarboroughs not related. But I want
- 1:12Speaker 2: to first go with Joe Scarborough and Mika Brazinski because
- 1:17Speaker 2: they had a as breaking nine to one one would
- 1:20Speaker 2: call bombshell announcement earlier this week that I think could
- 1:25Speaker 2: be viewed as an olive branch, which is why I
- 1:28Speaker 2: said it, simply put, was major.
- 1:32Speaker 1: Take a listen to.
- 1:33Speaker 3: This from so many people, from political leaders to regular
- 1:37Speaker 3: citizens deeply dismayed by several of President elect Trump's cabinet selections,
- 1:43Speaker 3: and they are scared. Last Thursday, we expressed our own
- 1:47Speaker 3: concerns on this broadcast and even said we would appreciate
- 1:50Speaker 3: the opportunity to speak with the President elect himself. On Friday,
- 1:55Speaker 3: we were given the opportunity to do just that, and
- 2:00Speaker 3: I went to mar A Lago to meet personally with
- 2:03Speaker 3: President elect Trump. It was the first time we have
- 2:08Speaker 3: seen him in seven years now.
- 2:10Speaker 4: We talked about a lot of issues, including abortion, mass deportation,
- 2:15Speaker 4: threats of political retribution against political opponents and media outlets.
- 2:19Speaker 1: We talked about that a good bit and.
- 2:21Speaker 4: That's going to come as no surprise to anybody who
- 2:24Speaker 4: watches this show, has watched it over the past year
- 2:28Speaker 4: or over the past decade, that we didn't see eye
- 2:31Speaker 4: to eye on a lot of issues, and we told
- 2:34Speaker 4: him so.
- 2:35Speaker 3: What we did agree on was to restar our communications.
- 2:39Speaker 3: My father often spoke with world leaders with whom he
- 2:42Speaker 3: and the United States profoundly disagreed. That's a task shared
- 2:47Speaker 3: by reporters and commentators alike. We had not spoken to
- 2:52Speaker 3: President Trump since March of twenty twenty, other than a
- 2:56Speaker 3: personal call Joe made to Trump on the morning after
- 2:59Speaker 3: the tempt on his life in Butler, Pennsylvania. In this meeting,
- 3:04Speaker 3: President Trump was tearful, he was upbeat. He seemed interested
- 3:09Speaker 3: in finding common ground with Democrats on some of the
- 3:12Speaker 3: most divisive issues. And for those asking why we would
- 3:17Speaker 3: go speak to the president elect during such fraught times,
- 3:20Speaker 3: especially between US, I guess I would ask back, why
- 3:24Speaker 3: wouldn't we? Five years of political warfare has deeply divided
- 3:29Speaker 3: Washington and the country. We have been as clear as
- 3:32Speaker 3: we know how in expressing our deep concerns about President
- 3:36Speaker 3: Trump's actions and words in the coursening of public debate.
- 3:40Speaker 3: But for eighty million Americans, election denialism public trials in
- 3:47Speaker 3: January sixth were not as important as the issues that
- 3:51Speaker 3: moved them to send Donald Trump back to the White
- 3:54Speaker 3: House with their vote. Joe and I realized it's time
- 3:59Speaker 3: to do something different, and that starts with not only
- 4:02Speaker 3: talking about Donald Trump, but also talking with him.
- 4:08Speaker 2: All Right, So, I guess a lot of people on
- 4:09Speaker 2: both sides of the isle are saying, why are you
- 4:11Speaker 2: caving to Trump? And then the other side says, well,
- 4:13Speaker 2: you were bashing him for years. Look, here's what I
- 4:16Speaker 2: think about this, meaning it's major.
- 4:18Speaker 1: It's major that.
- 4:19Speaker 2: This happened because I do believe to have one leg
- 4:24Speaker 2: up on news, you have to have better communications with
- 4:28Speaker 2: the present and with the White House. And if it
- 4:32Speaker 2: could end Trump's continual fake news mantra, I'm all for it,
- 4:39Speaker 2: because here's the thing. These networks and Trump went at
- 4:44Speaker 2: it day after day each year of that term, each
- 4:48Speaker 2: day of that first term. But if there could be
- 4:51Speaker 2: some cordiality eight years later, if there could be some communications,
- 4:57Speaker 2: as Mika Brazinski says, and if there could be some
- 5:03Speaker 2: rapport between the media and the President of the United
- 5:07Speaker 2: States while holding the president accountable, I'm all for it.
- 5:14Speaker 2: I think it's a big step that they went to
- 5:17Speaker 2: meet with Trump and that Trump met with them.
- 5:21Speaker 1: I think the.
- 5:22Speaker 2: Networks, Mika and Joe I guess the starters having that
- 5:28Speaker 2: rebuilding phase.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Because they obviously know it will be here for four years.
- 5:35Speaker 1: You need that.
- 5:37Speaker 2: I think we're all tired of the Trump bashing on
- 5:41Speaker 2: one side and then the fake news moniker on the other.
- 5:46Speaker 2: So what's the best way to meet in the middle.
- 5:49Speaker 2: You actually talk to each other, you have communication, and
- 5:53Speaker 2: I guess from Rosie o'donald. So she's not watching Morning
- 5:55Speaker 2: Joe because she feels like they caved. Maybe Joe and
- 5:58Speaker 2: Mika were doing the right thing. Maybe Joe and Mika
- 6:02Speaker 2: were doing the right thing. Now, Mika Brazinski, obviously I
- 6:06Speaker 2: believe Joe are married. Right, So here's the.
- 6:11Speaker 1: Here's LONAO Mika.
- 6:12Speaker 2: She's the daughter of diplomat and political scientists. Is the
- 6:16Speaker 2: big new Brazinski who served as counselor to lend and
- 6:20Speaker 2: Jesu B. Johnson and national security advisor to President jen
- 6:24Speaker 2: Mee Harter. So her family has been connected in politics
- 6:27Speaker 2: forever and on her mom's side. Actually, she is the
- 6:34Speaker 2: grandniece of Czechoslovakia's former president Edvard Bennis, So she's in
- 6:39Speaker 2: the political game. She's been around politics her whole life.
- 6:42Speaker 2: I think she knows how this works. Joe Scarborough has
- 6:47Speaker 2: stepped in.
- 6:47Speaker 1: At times, but.
- 6:53Speaker 2: I think that this is a great first step that
- 6:56Speaker 2: MSNBC two MSNBC anchors. I remember that channel rapidly goes
- 7:02Speaker 2: after Trump.
- 7:03Speaker 1: For these two to step off that plane and say
- 7:06Speaker 1: we're going to.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Actually have communication because I think the whole country's tired
- 7:11Speaker 2: of the dis unity and the disinformation.
- 7:15Speaker 1: And I would say this meeting goes.
- 7:17Speaker 2: Back to what an Riley was talking about the human ecosystem.
- 7:23Speaker 2: The human ecosystem also should include a healthy media and
- 7:28Speaker 2: a healthy relationship with the White House. So kudos to
- 7:34Speaker 2: Joe Scarborough and Mika frobbing one leg up over everybody
- 7:39Speaker 2: else on the liberal sphere of networks because they're doing
- 7:44Speaker 2: something big here, something major. They are meeting with the
- 7:50Speaker 2: president elect. They met with the President elect, and that's
- 7:55Speaker 2: a good versart. Maybe it'll inspire other networks like CBS
- 7:58Speaker 2: News to act you make amends with Trump over this
- 8:02Speaker 2: whole edited inter with Kamala.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Maybe they inspires them.
- 8:06Speaker 2: To meet with Trump and say, look, we will record you,
- 8:09Speaker 2: we won't edit you.
- 8:11Speaker 1: We will post post.
- 8:12Speaker 2: Everything you say in the transcript. If that'll put us
- 8:16Speaker 2: in your.
- 8:16Speaker 1: Good graces, because I don't want to repeat of what
- 8:21Speaker 1: happened when he first got to office.
- 8:22Speaker 2: Remembory called BuzzFeed a steaming pilot garbage, and budsfeed is
- 8:26Speaker 2: what it is. It's a a quiz thing.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I don't know, it's not always news.
- 8:32Speaker 2: But the point is you can't have the president elect
- 8:36Speaker 2: setting up there calling the media a steaming pilot garbage again,
- 8:43Speaker 2: and you can't have the Trump pushback all the time either.
- 8:46Speaker 2: There's gotta be a middle ground and maybe, just maybe
- 8:49Speaker 2: that human egosism idea is behind this meeting where.
- 8:54Speaker 1: You talk to each other, you communicate.
- 8:58Speaker 2: That's something that did not really happen in the first term,
- 9:01Speaker 2: because even though Trump would give ours long's press conferences,
- 9:06Speaker 2: the media always skewed it.
- 9:07Speaker 1: Maybe that should change. Just report what he actually said.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Wouldn't that be nice for the whole country to bring
- 9:17Speaker 2: some unity. And if you know, Ellen degenders out of
- 9:29Speaker 2: the country, i'mything about that.
- 9:31Speaker 1: If these celebrities really want to leave, fine.
- 9:34Speaker 2: But the media needs to stay around and cover this
- 9:39Speaker 2: White House, but fairly.
- 9:41Speaker 1: Withholding them accountable. It can be done.
- 9:44Speaker 2: A balance can be struck. I think Mika and Joe
- 9:47Speaker 2: Scarborough are showing that now. Another Scarborough, who's been in
- 9:52Speaker 2: our homes for fifty years, made this announcement the other
- 9:59Speaker 2: night on NBC for New York.
- 10:03Speaker 1: This is the voice of Chuck scart Well.
- 10:06Speaker 5: Guys tonight final they I'd like to break some personal news.
- 10:10Speaker 5: The time has come to pass the torch. Fifty years,
- 10:13Speaker 5: eight months and seventeen days after I walked into the
- 10:16Speaker 5: door here at the headquarters of the National Broadcasting Company,
- 10:19Speaker 5: I will step away from this anchor desk. My last
- 10:21Speaker 5: newscast is going to be on December twelfth, three weeks
- 10:24Speaker 5: from tonight, and I'll have more to say to you
- 10:27Speaker 5: and to my extraordinary colleagues at NBC four than But
- 10:31Speaker 5: for now I'll offer a simple, heartfelt thank you for
- 10:35Speaker 5: allowing me in your living rooms and trust to us
- 10:38Speaker 5: to bring you the news.
- 10:40Speaker 2: And by the way, I think that he brought Chuckscerverau
- 10:45Speaker 2: brought the news to us in an unbiased way, in
- 10:47Speaker 2: a very warm demeanor, and made you trust him. And
- 10:54Speaker 2: he is beloved in New York City, is he not?
- 10:57Speaker 2: He said. There's only one word, gratitude, said Scarborough. Our
- 11:01Speaker 2: WNBC viewers welcomed me into their homes for more than
- 11:04Speaker 2: fifty years. Trust me in the present of the news,
- 11:06Speaker 2: free of any agenda, faithful to the fundamental principles of accuracy,
- 11:11Speaker 2: objectivity and fairness. That has been an extraordinary honor.
- 11:16Speaker 1: NBC News reported this.
- 11:19Speaker 2: NBC four New York reported this, announcing his intention to
- 11:22Speaker 2: relinquish the anchor chair.
- 11:23Speaker 1: After more than half a century.
- 11:26Speaker 2: At NBC for New York, legendary broadcast journalist Chuck Scarborough
- 11:30Speaker 2: will conclude his record setting run as a New York
- 11:34Speaker 2: City DMA's longest serving local television news anchor on Thursday,
- 11:41Speaker 2: December twelfth at five pm. Calling his planned retirement with
- 11:47Speaker 2: an asterisk, Scarborough says that he will become a periodic
- 11:51Speaker 2: contributor special station projects, M programs. Scarborough and his tenure
- 12:00Speaker 2: with WNBC on March twenty fifth, nineteen seventy four, anchoring
- 12:05Speaker 2: the six pm and eleven pm weekday news from Studio
- 12:08Speaker 2: six B in thirty Rock, the current home of The
- 12:11Speaker 2: Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. In twenty sixteen, he stepped
- 12:15Speaker 2: away from WNBC's eleven pm anchor chair after more than
- 12:18Speaker 2: forty two years, but remained a co anchor for the
- 12:21Speaker 2: daily six pm daily newscasts continuing today, alongside co anchor
- 12:30Speaker 2: Natalie Pascuerrella, lead anchor, sports anchor Bruce Beck, and meteorologist
- 12:35Speaker 2: Janis Huff. Eric Lerner, the president and general manager of
- 12:40Speaker 2: NBC for New York, says Chuck Scarborough is the gold
- 12:43Speaker 2: standard in American broadcast journalism. His skills as anchor, reporter
- 12:48Speaker 2: and newsroom leader are unmatched, and he is a pretty
- 12:52Speaker 2: special guy off camera.
- 12:54Speaker 4: Two.
- 12:56Speaker 2: We are fortunate Chuck's Laps newscast will be next month.
- 12:59Speaker 2: He returned to his news for from New York family
- 13:02Speaker 2: from time to time and report.
- 13:04Speaker 1: On special projects.
- 13:10Speaker 2: Earlier this year, he actually celebrated fifty years. Fifty years
- 13:13Speaker 2: of WNBC for New York and in a year where
- 13:19Speaker 2: we've seen where we've seen John Sterling stepped down from
- 13:25Speaker 2: the booth at Yankee Stadium, Sam Rosen.
- 13:29Speaker 1: This is his last year.
- 13:32Speaker 2: It's just another piece of childhood that is moving forward.
- 13:39Speaker 2: And I thank Chuck Scarborough for always having one leg
- 13:44Speaker 2: up on news and yes for the opportunity to get
- 13:47Speaker 2: to meet him when we were on tour with Jane
- 13:50Speaker 2: Pawley and that crew back in the nineties. Even got
- 13:54Speaker 2: pictures with Lemburm and Matt Lower and the like. And yes,
- 13:58Speaker 2: mister Chuck Scarborough se NBC four has always felt like
- 14:03Speaker 2: a family, whether we were up in the offices of
- 14:06Speaker 2: Frank Comerford, the general manager of NBC four New York,
- 14:13Speaker 2: or on the set of Saturday Night Live. Chuck Scarborough
- 14:20Speaker 2: and the WNBC family, and of course my finite friendship
- 14:23Speaker 2: with Bruce Beck for years. Not only did they feel
- 14:28Speaker 2: like we were in the living room with them, we
- 14:34Speaker 2: literally were at studio with them as well, and that
- 14:38Speaker 2: was so special over the years. So thank you Chuck
- 14:43Speaker 2: for being so welcoming and so humble both on and
- 14:48Speaker 2: off air, and we wish you a happy retirement at
- 14:54Speaker 2: the One Leg Up Network, and thank you for having
- 14:58Speaker 2: one Leg Up unused
