- Lucas: Welcome back to Learn Amharic with Fexingo. I am Lucas. Luna: And I am Luna. Hey everyone. It is so good to be here again. Lucas: It really is. We have been doing a lot of travel phrases lately. Luna: Right. From the post office to the bookstore. It feels like we are everywhere. Lucas: But today, we are staying home. Or at least, in the kitchen. Luna: Oh, I love kitchens. Especially when there is food involved. Lucas: Exactly. And to eat well, you need the right tools. Luna: Tools? Like... knives and spoons? Lucas: Yes. Today we are learning the names for two very important kitchen items. Luna: Okay. Let us start with the first one. The knife. Lucas: The word for knife in Amharic is ማንኪያ. Luna: ma nki ya. Okay. Let me try that. Lucas: Good. Say it slowly. ማንኪያ. Luna: ማንኪያ. Lucas: Perfect. That is exactly right. ma nki ya. Knife. Luna: I got it. ማንኪያ. I feel very sharp already. Lucas: Just be careful with it. Now, let us look at the second item. Luna: The spoon. What is the word for spoon? Lucas: The word for spoon is ሹካ. Luna: Shu-ka. Short and sweet. Let me repeat it. Lucas: Go ahead. ሹካ. Luna: ሹካ. Lucas: Excellent. Shu-ka. Spoon. You are picking these up quickly. Luna: Thanks. I am trying. But wait. How do I actually ask for them? Lucas: That is a great question. In previous episodes, we learned how to ask if someone has something. Luna: Right. Like 'Do you have water?' or 'Do you have eggs?' Lucas: Exactly. The structure is simple. You take the noun and add 'alekh'. Luna: So for knife... ማንኪያ alekh? Lucas: Yes. ማንኪያ አለህ? This means 'Do you have a knife?' Luna: Let me try the whole phrase. ማንኪያ አለህ? Lucas: Spot on. Now, can you do the same for the spoon? Luna: Hmm. Let me think. Spoon is ሹካ. So... ሹካ አለህ? Lucas: Perfect. ሹካ አለህ? 'Do you have a spoon?' Luna: This is making so much sense. It is just adding that little piece to the end. Lucas: It really is. And remember, this is informal. You use this with friends. Luna: Got it. Friends and family. Not necessarily the boss. Lucas: Correct. Now, what if you don't have one, and you want me to give you one? Luna: Oh. How do I say 'Please give me a spoon'? Lucas: We have a special phrase for that. It starts with 'ebakih'. Luna: Ebakih. Okay. What comes next? Lucas: You say the object, then 'stten'. So, 'ebakih shuka stten'. Luna: Ebakih shuka stten. Please give me a spoon. Lucas: Yes. Exactly. Ebakih shuka stten. It is polite and clear. Luna: I love that. It sounds so natural. Let me practice the flow. Lucas: Go for it. Luna: Ebakih shuka stten. Ebakih shuka stten. Lucas: You nailed it. There is no hesitation. It flows perfectly. Luna: I am glad. I was worried I would mess up the order. Lucas: You didn't. The order is always: Politeness marker + Object + Give me. Luna: Okay. So, ebakih mankiya stten would be 'please give me a knife'? Lucas: Yes. Though maybe be careful asking for a knife too often. Luna: Good point. Maybe stick to the spoon for now. Lucas: Safe choice. Let us review what we have learned today. Luna: Okay. First word. Knife. ማንኪያ. Lucas: Repeat after me. ማንኪያ. Luna: ማንኪያ. Lucas: Second word. Spoon. ሹካ. Luna: ሹካ. Lucas: Third phrase. Do you have a knife? ማንኪያ አለህ? Luna: ማንኪያ አለህ? Lucas: Fourth phrase. Do you have a spoon? ሹካ አለህ? Luna: ሹካ አለህ? Lucas: And the final phrase. Please give me a spoon. እባክህ ሹካ ስጠኝ. Luna: እባክህ ሹካ ስጠኝ. Lucas: You did wonderful today. Those were all correct. Luna: Thank you. I feel ready to cook my first Amharic meal. Lucas: I believe you. Just maybe don't invite me over until you master the knife skills. Luna: Deal. I will stick to the spoon for now. Lucas: That is smart. Before we go, I wanted to mention something about Fexingo.
