- 0:10What's going on, everybody?
- 0:14Welcome to the Clydesdale Media Podcast.
- 0:38My name is Scott Switch.
- 0:39I'm the Clydesdale.
- 0:40She is Chloe Govind David.
- 0:43And we're here to talk about
- 0:45CrossFit Games.
- 0:47But before we get into that,
- 0:49I was on your Instagram and I have,
- 0:51I want to start with something fun.
- 0:53So I saw on your Instagram,
- 0:55you practicing a movement
- 0:57that you said you did not
- 0:58get to do last year.
- 0:59Oh, yes.
- 1:02So my question to you is,
- 1:05I never saw this technique.
- 1:07Is this legal under the
- 1:09standards of CrossFit?
- 1:11Yes, it is.
- 1:12It is.
- 1:13I know.
- 1:14Funny thing is I posted that
- 1:15thinking it would be like my regular,
- 1:17you know,
- 1:18post with like maybe a hundred likes.
- 1:21And then this thing blew up.
- 1:22I, I don't understand.
- 1:23I just, I guess people have, as you said,
- 1:25not seen that technique or
- 1:27they've never seen that done.
- 1:28It was such a funny
- 1:29throwaway post that really like took,
- 1:32like just took off.
- 1:35Well, one, I love it.
- 1:38With the Olympics just around the corner,
- 1:39it's very like gymnastic.
- 1:43Exactly.
- 1:44And everybody else seems to
- 1:46do it more with a strict movement.
- 1:48With that big kip,
- 1:49that would make it so much easier.
- 1:52yeah that's that's sort of
- 1:53it that's why I posted I
- 1:54was like oh maybe it'll
- 1:55give some people some ideas
- 1:57I got a few tags people
- 1:59were trying it and I think
- 2:00now it's caught on a bit
- 2:01but to answer and even
- 2:02answer your original
- 2:03question it is legal so it
- 2:05might change maybe if dave
- 2:08or adrian saw this they're
- 2:09going to change the
- 2:10standards but the original
- 2:11standards last for two
- 2:13years ago was like start arms extended
- 2:17and pass through a lockout.
- 2:19So there's no like chin up requirement,
- 2:21pull up,
- 2:22or it's just straight arms to
- 2:25lock out like a muscle up.
- 2:27And it, you know,
- 2:27it's up to you to see how
- 2:29you want to get through that positioning.
- 2:32So I guess being a gymnast
- 2:34for this is really, really,
- 2:35really helpful.
- 2:37But you do get very,
- 2:39very dizzy because of the
- 2:42large angle or large, you know,
- 2:43circumference of your turn.
- 2:45So you do get, I think,
- 2:46dizzier doing it this way.
- 2:48It's more efficient,
- 2:49but you get a little bit dizzy.
- 2:52And if you're Brent Fitkowski,
- 2:54you better make sure the
- 2:55bar's high enough.
- 2:58I should post a bent leg
- 2:59version and tag Brent in it.
- 3:03There you go.
- 3:04Oh, but yeah, this is a wild post.
- 3:06I mean, a lot of people tried it.
- 3:07People were tagging me and
- 3:09people were saying their
- 3:10hips were hurting from, you know,
- 3:11trying to get that seamless
- 3:13transition without hitting their hips.
- 3:15So it was a funny post.
- 3:19You never know what's going
- 3:20to go viral in this world, do you?
- 3:23I would have never known.
- 3:26Yeah, but I loved it.
- 3:27I love the view of it.
- 3:29And man,
- 3:30I hope we get to see it in
- 3:31competition and other people use it.
- 3:32Maybe you, maybe this year.
- 3:35If that comes out,
- 3:36I'm going to do a salute.
- 3:37I'm just going to and just be like,
- 3:41this is my moment.
- 3:43Next thing, just at the games,
- 3:45you need to do it with a
- 3:45dismount so you can land.
- 3:48Exactly.
- 3:51Everything for the views, right?
- 3:52Yeah.
- 3:54Because that would totally go viral.
- 3:56Just a layout flip off of there,
- 3:59land it perfectly.
- 4:00Don't give me dreams here.
- 4:05I'm daydreaming with that.
- 4:07So I caught your interview
- 4:09with Dave this morning.
- 4:12Thank goodness it came out
- 4:13right before this because
- 4:14we get to talk about it now.
- 4:16You asked what I thought was
- 4:18a brilliant question.
- 4:20Oh, thank you.
- 4:21You asked Dave if he could
- 4:24create a new workout, not named workout,
- 4:32but yeah.
- 4:34And what would it be?
- 4:35And he kind of walked
- 4:37through the process with
- 4:38you and didn't really put
- 4:40together a full workout,
- 4:41but walked through the process.
- 4:43And you said that's really
- 4:44what you wanted anyway,
- 4:45because you wanted to hear
- 4:46his thought process.
- 4:49In addition to that,
- 4:49you said you read his book
- 4:50and you were waiting for a new one.
- 4:56I ask you if you were
- 4:58creating a new benchmark.
- 5:00Oh, what would it be?
- 5:02Ooh, the tables.
- 5:08Oh my God.
- 5:09Your arms are beautiful, Chloe.
- 5:11Oh, thank you so much.
- 5:13Wow.
- 5:13What a beautiful compliment.
- 5:17Um,
- 5:18Yeah, that's going to,
- 5:19that's going to turn a bit.
- 5:20I think where Dave,
- 5:22I thought it was
- 5:22interesting because I did
- 5:23leave it a little bit open
- 5:25and did in the sense that I said, Oh,
- 5:28benchmark workouts for my experience,
- 5:30Fran, Diane,
- 5:31they were written on the
- 5:32walls when you walked into the affiliate,
- 5:34like those were the,
- 5:35what's your bench from the
- 5:37gym equivalency, right?
- 5:38What's your friend, your Diane,
- 5:40so important and so like pivotal.
- 5:42And whether you stay in CrossFit,
- 5:44it's like, Oh, all these little things,
- 5:46are just part of the process.
- 5:48So I really wanted to hear his perspective,
- 5:50not from a games athlete.
- 5:52And so I'm happy he went that way.
- 5:53He really went what would be
- 5:55like an affiliate new
- 5:57benchmark that people could
- 5:58just could go into their gym and do.
- 6:00He even said it would be
- 6:01different for a new person,
- 6:03like someone just walking off the street.
- 6:05But for someone who's been doing, you know,
- 6:06three, six months CrossFit,
- 6:08what would be a new benchmark?
- 6:10Personally, I feel like
- 6:12Right now, like the Fran,
- 6:13Diane's and Cindy's are
- 6:16really cool in the sense
- 6:17that they're varied.
- 6:18You have some short, some long.
- 6:20So I think where I would go
- 6:22is trying to bring in maybe,
- 6:23like he mentioned the wall walk.
- 6:25I love a wall walk.
- 6:26So bringing in maybe like a
- 6:28newer movement style, like a wall walk,
- 6:31something we haven't seen
- 6:32that's accessible,
- 6:33but that we haven't seen.
- 6:35But as he said,
- 6:36I agreed with him in the
- 6:37sense that you want it to be accessible.
- 6:39So a wall walk, you can even put it,
- 6:42a line for the scaled and
- 6:43you can do the full line to the 10 inch.
- 6:46You want some version of
- 6:49like a thruster that everybody can do.
- 6:51I do like the complexity of
- 6:53like a squat snatch, which we evolved.
- 6:55We talked about Amanda towards the end.
- 6:57I do like the difficulty
- 6:58where it's a challenge
- 7:00where someone might
- 7:01necessarily not walk in and
- 7:02be able to do it.
- 7:03And now they want to strive towards it.
- 7:06I think that's interesting.
- 7:07And that's gets, gets people into, Oh,
- 7:09I have to train for this
- 7:10and I'm going to eventually get it.
- 7:12like Fran banded first time
- 7:14and then kipping and then
- 7:16butterfly as you progress.
- 7:17So as Dave,
- 7:19I don't think I could write
- 7:20something on the fly,
- 7:20but I would definitely try
- 7:22to have maybe a new-ish
- 7:23movement like the wall walk,
- 7:25which shows the evolution of the sport,
- 7:27but still keeping some challenge,
- 7:29perhaps like a thrust or a
- 7:31wall walk and maybe
- 7:31something more complex so
- 7:33that people could strive
- 7:34towards getting it RX for the first time.
- 7:36So you don't get it right away.
- 7:38You have to kind of work for it.
- 7:40Yeah,
- 7:40and I like your response to the
- 7:41Amanda because, you know, on paper,
- 7:44it's 9-7-5.
- 7:45Everybody's like, well, that's it.
- 7:47Exactly.
- 7:51And then when you're done with it,
- 7:53you said, talk to me when you're done.
- 7:54And then you realize you
- 7:56just got hit with something
- 7:57you didn't realize.
- 8:00What I like about it,
- 8:01the way you described it,
- 8:02is something to strive for.
- 8:04When I started CrossFit in 2011,
- 8:06like Fran was that thing I
- 8:08wanted to be able to do RX.
- 8:11And my gym had a very like
- 8:13big stipulation that you
- 8:15had to do it in under five
- 8:17or you're missing the stimulus.
- 8:19Even if you could do
- 8:20pull-ups and you could do the thruster,
- 8:22if you couldn't do it under five,
- 8:24then you still need to scale.
- 8:26And so it was this big like
- 8:28achievement to try to get to that,
- 8:30to be able to do it.
- 8:32So that's the one part I
- 8:34kind of disagreed with Dave a little bit.
- 8:36Like,
- 8:38Burpees and a dumbbell
- 8:41thruster is not something to strive for.
- 8:44It's just something that's going to hurt.
- 8:49But I get what he was trying
- 8:50to make a point of, too,
- 8:51that sometimes programming
- 8:52just needs to be simple and
- 8:54let the athlete shine.
- 8:55Mm-hmm.
- 8:58Yeah, we got a lot out of it, right?
- 9:00As you can see,
- 9:01there was a lot out of that one question.
- 9:04I didn't think it would be, it was great,
- 9:05but I didn't, I didn't expect that.
- 9:07I would agree with you in
- 9:09the sense that a burpee and
- 9:11a thruster is maybe too accessible,
- 9:13but I understand, as he said,
- 9:15it depends if someone's
- 9:16like walking off the street,
- 9:19am I introducing it to CrossFit?
- 9:20You could tell he wasn't
- 9:22sure where to bring it.
- 9:23So I think he showed from burpee,
- 9:25thruster,
- 9:26And he went all the way to Amanda, right?
- 9:28A friend, a pimped up friend.
- 9:30So I think he showed even mentally his,
- 9:33okay,
- 9:33from I don't know what CrossFit is
- 9:35to almost CrossFit games.
- 9:37He showed what the benchmark
- 9:38could evolve into depending
- 9:40on what level you're at.
- 9:42But striving for me, for sure,
- 9:44a benchmark is something
- 9:44you have to strive to achieve.
- 9:47That's what makes it like benchmark.
- 9:48Like, wow,
- 9:48I'm going to go write my time down.
- 9:50And it's going to matter and
- 9:51I can put it in the Rx
- 9:52category today because I
- 9:54worked on it and etc.
- 9:57I think the main thing I got
- 9:59out of it is it's not easy.
- 10:02Like coming up with a
- 10:03benchmark is not a simple thing.
- 10:06It takes a lot of thought.
- 10:08There's a lot of factors into it.
- 10:10What do you want to accomplish with it?
- 10:12So then my follow-up question to you is,
- 10:15if you were ever given the
- 10:17opportunity to program the
- 10:19games or a major competition,
- 10:22would you jump at that chance?
- 10:24Because it seems like you
- 10:26really nerd out on this stuff.
- 10:30I mean,
- 10:31it would be a lot of pressure and I
- 10:33feel like it would be
- 10:34something that you have to
- 10:36tread into with a lot of
- 10:38like caution and
- 10:40understanding that this is a big moment,
- 10:41especially like games or
- 10:43semifinals or of that caliber.
- 10:45I already program a master's comp.
- 10:48So in Quebec,
- 10:48we have like this masters competition,
- 10:50masters only competition
- 10:53that people come all over Quebec,
- 10:54which is, you know,
- 10:55a few hours ride to come to
- 10:57our competition.
- 10:58And I always take it with a
- 11:00lot of seriousness in the
- 11:01sense that masters are often, oh,
- 11:04in our comps, RX scaled master.
- 11:08It's like, oh,
- 11:09there's knee raises and it's
- 11:11okay because they're masters.
- 11:12And I'm like, no,
- 11:13I want to do a masters comp
- 11:15For masters, not lesser.
- 11:19No.
- 11:19What can they do at their level,
- 11:21at their age group?
- 11:22What does it look like?
- 11:23Inspired by looking at Dave, Adrian Bosman,
- 11:26how they scale it down.
- 11:27Is it weight?
- 11:28Is it reps?
- 11:29Is it rounds?
- 11:30How do they do it?
- 11:31Because they're the greats.
- 11:32And then work off of that
- 11:33and give them a true
- 11:34competition for masters of all calibers.
- 11:37So we do have scaled masters
- 11:39and RX masters.
- 11:41So I do have a little bit of
- 11:42that experience of really
- 11:44having to deconstruct and
- 11:46organize and test and
- 11:48retest because I've made
- 11:50those programming errors where you go,
- 11:51this is going to be great.
- 11:53And it's a complete disaster in testing.
- 11:55So I've already had that experience.
- 11:57So I think I would totally
- 11:58jump at programming a big event.
- 12:01That would be almost dream, like a dream.
- 12:04I would absolutely love it.
- 12:06It's funny you talk about
- 12:07that because I think
- 12:08Masters is probably harder
- 12:09to program for than the
- 12:11Elites because there are so
- 12:13many age divisions.
- 12:14I was at Legends last year
- 12:16where they scaled out the
- 12:19bar muscle up from the 60 plus athletes,
- 12:2260 to 64 and 65 plus.
- 12:25Those athletes begged,
- 12:27let us show you what we can do.
- 12:30And they changed it on the fly.
- 12:32They made it like round one
- 12:34was chest to bar round two.
- 12:37Then you get to go for your bar muscle up.
- 12:39And those that could do it could do it.
- 12:41And they got to show
- 12:42everybody what they could do.
- 12:44So I think if you've done masters,
- 12:47it would be almost easier
- 12:48to do the elite.
- 12:51Yeah,
- 12:51I can see where you're going with that.
- 12:52I understand it's
- 12:54It's you go from such a
- 12:56limitation to almost,
- 12:57I'll say no limitation because you know,
- 13:01for us,
- 13:0235 to 39 can pretty much do what
- 13:03the elite athletes are, right?
- 13:05You're just out of the game.
- 13:07Then you go all the way to
- 13:0865 plus and they're
- 13:09everything in between.
- 13:11So the, yeah,
- 13:13figuring out what is
- 13:14appropriate for every age
- 13:16group is a lot more thought
- 13:17process than just the elites.
- 13:19Yeah.
- 13:20And men and women as well.
- 13:21I feel as, yeah, masters, men and women.
- 13:24So you almost have a lot of subcategories.
- 13:26You have the age, you have men and women,
- 13:29and there's a bigger
- 13:30difference throughout the age categories.
- 13:32Like for us, okay, yeah,
- 13:33calories will be adjusted.
- 13:35And yes, but I mean, masters,
- 13:38there is a bigger difference for sure.
- 13:41Corey Leonard says,
- 13:42I now have a new favorite athlete.
- 13:44Thank you, Chloe,
- 13:45for recognizing that we're old, not dead.
- 13:50I hear that a lot.
- 13:51Actually.
- 13:51That's so funny.
- 13:52I love it.
- 13:52It's that's exactly it.
- 13:54When the athletes after the comp,
- 13:55I always say,
- 13:56give me feedback on programming.
- 13:58I want it.
- 13:59Tell me like, Oh, tell me,
- 14:01give me the information.
- 14:02Cause I can only get better
- 14:03if you tell me versus if
- 14:05you don't tell me.
- 14:06And they always say,
- 14:07thank you for challenging, not, you know,
- 14:10making it easier.
- 14:11It's like challenging, but doable.
- 14:13And obviously what's in the
- 14:14finale is not necessarily
- 14:16what's written in the standards.
- 14:17Like they know finale, anything goes.
- 14:19And I put handstand walks in
- 14:21my finales for masters.
- 14:23And we do it, and it's, you know,
- 14:25some of them, you know, they get mad,
- 14:27but the next year, I swear,
- 14:29they come back and they're like,
- 14:31all right,
- 14:31there better be handstand walk
- 14:32this year because I'm ready.
- 14:34So I just feel like you have the challenge,
- 14:36but of course,
- 14:37you still have to keep the
- 14:38majority of the competition doable, fun,
- 14:40accessible, but finding that,
- 14:42just that nuance, and it's really tough.
- 14:44I don't always get it right, but I try.
- 14:47And it's funny you say that
- 14:48because it happens in the elite too,
- 14:50like the year they
- 14:51introduced the pegboards.
- 14:53what less than a handful could do them.
- 14:56And now it's a basic movement.
- 14:59Exactly.
- 15:00Uh, and that,
- 15:01that's how you advance the
- 15:02sport and that's how you grow and,
- 15:04and everybody gets better.
- 15:05Um, we'll move on from programming.
- 15:14a couple more fun things.
- 15:16You have now these new
- 15:17competitions that are
- 15:18coming out like SoCal,
- 15:19Wadapalooza that are doing
- 15:21North America versus the world.
- 15:23You have a fit fest is now
- 15:26doing Europe versus the
- 15:27world as a Canadian.
- 15:31And the,
- 15:31the amount of athletes that Canada
- 15:33is putting into the games
- 15:35now at the highest levels,
- 15:37when are we going to see
- 15:38Canada versus the world?
- 15:43No, you bring it up a good point.
- 15:45I did.
- 15:45I always have that little
- 15:47thought behind my head.
- 15:48I go, I see like the world, you know,
- 15:50Europe or, and they all make sense.
- 15:53You want that.
- 15:54You want that.
- 15:56US, but I feel like the invitational,
- 15:58I mean, we had Canada.
- 15:59So it was there at some point.
- 16:01I don't know if it's because
- 16:02of the athletes that were
- 16:03there or the representation, right?
- 16:05Oh, there were more Canadian athletes,
- 16:06perhaps.
- 16:07And now it's changed.
- 16:09Now it's North America,
- 16:10because we had Canada East, Canada West,
- 16:12we had the Atlas Games.
- 16:14So I feel like slowly, but surely,
- 16:16we've kind of cut down a bit.
- 16:18And now it's like, okay, all of America,
- 16:20North America, and
- 16:21we're all just one big pool of athletes.
- 16:24But in my heart, like in my head,
- 16:26there's always a little bit of, yeah,
- 16:28like Canada should be
- 16:29represented as its own space,
- 16:31as its own country,
- 16:33as its own like representation.
- 16:35That's exactly what I thought.
- 16:36I said, oh, Jeff Adler is North America.
- 16:38Oh yeah, North America is all of us,
- 16:41which again, it's okay to be with the US.
- 16:44I just feel like we're powerhouse too.
- 16:46I feel like there is place
- 16:47perhaps for us as well,
- 16:49if you look at the athletes.
- 16:51So I don't know where it
- 16:52went and I'd love to hear
- 16:53the mindset of why there's
- 16:54probably a reason,
- 16:55but I did say the same thing.
- 16:57I said, Oh, Canada,
- 16:58that would be really cool.
- 17:00Well,
- 17:00we look at the European semifinal and
- 17:03the emotion that goes in the,
- 17:05the spectators have because
- 17:07they get the route for their country,
- 17:09right?
- 17:10Because in Europe,
- 17:11there are 20 different
- 17:12countries represented at semifinals.
- 17:15And, um,
- 17:17And while we're friends with Canada,
- 17:20the U.S.
- 17:20and Canada are really good friends,
- 17:22there is some rivalry.
- 17:23You look at Olympic hockey
- 17:25and how visceral it gets
- 17:29between the two countries.
- 17:32I think that Canada should
- 17:33have representation when
- 17:34three of the top four men
- 17:36athletes last year were Canadian.
- 17:38That's true.
- 17:40And I co-host a show with Carolyn Prevost,
- 17:42and her immediate reaction was,
- 17:45why doesn't Canada have their own team?
- 17:47That's what I thought too.
- 17:50But,
- 17:52and I think like Canada could put that on,
- 17:54but I, and this is just facts.
- 17:56I think the can West fiasco
- 17:59has hurt Canadian competitions.
- 18:01I agree.
- 18:02I agree.
- 18:03Atlas with the, you know,
- 18:04the COVID experience as well.
- 18:05I mean,
- 18:05I know a lot of places got closed down,
- 18:07but we were the one where
- 18:08the athletes were in the briefing.
- 18:11I was there.
- 18:11We were sitting in the briefing.
- 18:13I was listening.
- 18:13I took a flight.
- 18:14I took,
- 18:15we're sitting in the auditorium and
- 18:17they close.
- 18:18They're like that really
- 18:19broke people in the sense that, Oh,
- 18:21it just crushed them to
- 18:22have traveled paid that close.
- 18:25And then the can West with all the payouts,
- 18:27the can East it's,
- 18:29It's been tough for Canada.
- 18:30I totally agree in that sense.
- 18:32But I mean,
- 18:32you can still have like
- 18:33representation at the SoCal
- 18:36event or that they're putting it on.
- 18:38They can still decide if they wish to,
- 18:40to have Canada as one of the representing,
- 18:43I'll say,
- 18:46Nations for now?
- 18:47There's like Europe, right?
- 18:49Europe.
- 18:49No, world.
- 18:50World is all of Europe, right?
- 18:51Is that it?
- 18:52Europe and others?
- 18:54So Cal is doing North
- 18:55America versus the world.
- 18:57Yeah, exactly.
- 18:57I'm thinking in the UK and
- 19:01they're doing Europe versus the world.
- 19:03Yes, exactly.
- 19:04So Canada versus the world.
- 19:05Yeah, we could do something like that.
- 19:06You could grow the sport
- 19:08here if you did just US
- 19:10versus Canada in the
- 19:11offseason every year.
- 19:14Just a one day,
- 19:16like the invitational was one day,
- 19:17couple hours, right?
- 19:21That was fun.
- 19:22I miss it.
- 19:23I miss it.
- 19:23That was, that was awesome.
- 19:26I mean,
- 19:26the invitational was must watch for
- 19:29a CrossFit nerd.
- 19:30We would barbecue,
- 19:32my buddies and I would sit
- 19:33around the TV and we would
- 19:34watch it for a couple hours
- 19:36and it was just a great day.
- 19:39I agree.
- 19:40I agree.
- 19:40And then it was like everybody was like,
- 19:42who's going to be on the team?
- 19:44And like the weeks before, it's like, oh,
- 19:46who are they going to pick between?
- 19:47Is the best event finish?
- 19:48What is it from the games?
- 19:50And everybody would
- 19:51speculate who would be on the team.
- 19:53And it was just something
- 19:54for the offseason.
- 19:55Right.
- 19:56Because the offseason before
- 19:58Rogue and then Rogue came into the space,
- 20:00which is amazing.
- 20:01Rogue is absolutely amazing.
- 20:04One more topical thing I
- 20:05want to get your impression on,
- 20:06and then we'll talk about
- 20:07your goals for the games.
- 20:09But I like talking about
- 20:10this stuff more because I
- 20:11think we learn more.
- 20:13You have been a team athlete
- 20:15and an individual athlete.
- 20:18Recently, a couple drug pops have come,
- 20:22and it's in the team competition.
- 20:26Off the air,
- 20:27Carolyn and I were having a
- 20:28conversation about how
- 20:30difficult it is to put your
- 20:32trust in three other people.
- 20:36going into a team season and
- 20:38you have no control over
- 20:39what they do when they're
- 20:40away from practice.
- 20:43As a team athlete, what is that like?
- 20:45And then I don't know if you
- 20:46saw Sasha Nieve's response.
- 20:50But it was not discarded at all.
- 20:55She basically let it all out,
- 20:57how disappointed she was,
- 20:59fighting through injury to
- 21:00make it through this season,
- 21:02and then to have it ripped
- 21:03away because one of her
- 21:04teammates was irresponsible.
- 21:08Yeah, it's, there's almost no words.
- 21:12I, I, in my brain, I just went there.
- 21:15Imagine if like one of my seasons,
- 21:17I just put myself in that
- 21:18mindset for a second and it's just,
- 21:21it's devastating.
- 21:22Um, but again, you can't,
- 21:26it's not something you could control.
- 21:27It's not something you could change.
- 21:29You can't go back and it's
- 21:31so difficult when it's out
- 21:33of your control.
- 21:33Like a lot of things for a
- 21:34lot of athletes.
- 21:36Do you think some athletes
- 21:37do not do team because they
- 21:39can't control that?
- 21:40That's interesting.
- 21:41I didn't think of that perspective.
- 21:44Perhaps it depends again,
- 21:47how much you trust your teammates,
- 21:48how much you know them as, as,
- 21:51as people first, um,
- 21:52I think a lot of the
- 21:53teammates I've been on,
- 21:54like I've known as people
- 21:55before even considering
- 21:57going team with them.
- 21:58So I have a little bit more
- 21:59perspective on their,
- 22:00I'll say their character or
- 22:01their choices or even their
- 22:03informed decisions.
- 22:04Because not all those cases are, oh,
- 22:06I decided to and yeah, I chose to dope.
- 22:09Some of them it's, you know,
- 22:11like an error in reading,
- 22:12a wrong product.
- 22:14So it's not always their fault,
- 22:15but that is still like
- 22:17informed decisions.
- 22:19Like, I mean, I read everything,
- 22:21everything.
- 22:22I over, I would say I overdo it.
- 22:25Like my, my boyfriend knows,
- 22:26like when I come home from semis,
- 22:27I'm like, okay, like,
- 22:29are we sure that we checked everything?
- 22:30I really go overboard perhaps.
- 22:33And just knowing that others
- 22:34are the same and are not as careless.
- 22:36I think that's important.
- 22:38So perhaps some people that go,
- 22:40should I go team with this person?
- 22:41I don't really know them.
- 22:43Perhaps not.
- 22:45But I think the biggest
- 22:46thing that I remember is
- 22:49like the move fast lift to
- 22:50heavy team that I went on.
- 22:52I remember having that conversation.
- 22:53They had popped the year before 22, 21.
- 22:55I don't want to quote it wrong,
- 22:58but I don't remember which year.
- 22:59And we had a discussion about that.
- 23:02And when I came into that year, they said,
- 23:04we're going to all sit in the office.
- 23:06Give me the list of all your supplements.
- 23:08So I think people learn as well.
- 23:10So we checked everything.
- 23:11Everything was checked earlier.
- 23:13Like, okay, give me a list.
- 23:14What is everybody in?
- 23:16Everybody understands what
- 23:17we're going into.
- 23:17You do not take anything that's been open.
- 23:20Like even just a drink.
- 23:21Oh, like vendors, right?
- 23:23You think it's ridiculous.
- 23:24I never take anything from a
- 23:26vendor that's open.
- 23:27I know it's totally ridiculous,
- 23:29like a sample, but-
- 23:31It's open.
- 23:32It's open.
- 23:33So I'm friends with the,
- 23:35the pan check twins.
- 23:36Like they won't even like
- 23:38take a protein bar from
- 23:39anybody or anything.
- 23:41Like if,
- 23:42if they had didn't purchase it
- 23:43themselves and check it out,
- 23:46they do not eat it.
- 23:47Same, same.
- 23:49It's tempting.
- 23:50It's everything's out there.
- 23:51And it's like, try this, try that.
- 23:53And it's just trying to stay focused.
- 23:55So yeah,
- 23:56like I learned a lot in that
- 23:57moment with move fast, lift heavy.
- 23:58It was like, okay,
- 23:58we're going to go talk in the,
- 23:59in the office.
- 24:00I was like, okay, this is serious.
- 24:02And they're like, okay,
- 24:02we're going to talk about that.
- 24:03And I said, wow,
- 24:05that's really being
- 24:05proactive as much as you
- 24:07can and really taking
- 24:08things as much into your hands,
- 24:10checking everything,
- 24:10helping the athletes out.
- 24:12So I think a lot of it comes to, as I said,
- 24:14informed choice, looking, being proactive,
- 24:17even as a team,
- 24:18talking to your teammates and saying,
- 24:20what are you taking?
- 24:21Do you need help?
- 24:22Do you need, hey,
- 24:23let's all bundle and all
- 24:24buy the same things.
- 24:25And so, yeah.
- 24:27And it's like a Christian as
- 24:30a leader learned from a bad experience,
- 24:33never to let that happen again.
- 24:35And that's why I'm assuming
- 24:36that meeting happened.
- 24:38Yeah, well, exactly.
- 24:39We, we, we really,
- 24:40we were all on the same
- 24:42page and it was a very,
- 24:42very serious discussion,
- 24:44which it needs to be.
- 24:45This is a very serious
- 24:47commitment that we're all doing.
- 24:48I was taking flights and it's,
- 24:50it's a very serious
- 24:51commitment no matter what.
- 24:52And you're committing
- 24:52yourself to others as well.
- 24:54It's not just yourself.
- 24:55It's the whole team.
- 24:57Yeah.
- 24:58So segueing, when you were at semifinals,
- 25:01you were coaching a team
- 25:03and you were competing individually.
- 25:04Yeah.
- 25:05And every time I saw you backstage,
- 25:07you were coaching your team.
- 25:08And I didn't see you doing
- 25:10like getting ready yourself
- 25:12for the floor.
- 25:13I know you probably were,
- 25:15but it just so happens like
- 25:16all I saw was your
- 25:17dedication to that team.
- 25:20Now you're going to the
- 25:21games without that commitment.
- 25:25I know you'd love for the
- 25:26team to have made it,
- 25:27but what does it do to you?
- 25:30Can you focus more on yourself now?
- 25:32And is that going to make it
- 25:33easier for you at the games?
- 25:37I think so.
- 25:38I think without taking away
- 25:39from like the team and prior engagements,
- 25:42I mean, I chose to do everything.
- 25:45to help the team,
- 25:46I chose to take that
- 25:47leadership role and that coach's role.
- 25:49And I was very happy to do it.
- 25:51And even at semis,
- 25:53they were awesome in the sense that,
- 25:55Chloe, do what you need to do.
- 25:56If you need to step away,
- 25:58or they really were awesome
- 26:00in always saying, Chloe,
- 26:01think of yourself first.
- 26:02But I said, no,
- 26:03this is what I said I would do.
- 26:05And at the start of the year,
- 26:05and I'm someone that when I
- 26:06say I'm going to do something, I do it.
- 26:09So I try to stick to what I say.
- 26:13So to your question,
- 26:16semis was a lot of focus on
- 26:18them day one and day two.
- 26:20I don't think I even had
- 26:21time to stress on my event.
- 26:23And I think that kind of
- 26:24played a positive role.
- 26:25Like I heard your discussion with Carolyn,
- 26:27um, about.
- 26:30Like, oh, did it help Chloe or not?
- 26:31And I watched that and it
- 26:33was really interesting.
- 26:34And I think she got it
- 26:36completely right in the
- 26:36sense that it liberated my
- 26:38brain of overstressing.
- 26:39And it just made it that I'm
- 26:41here to compete and have fun.
- 26:43I'm here to enjoy.
- 26:44And I know people don't like
- 26:45saying having fun,
- 26:46but truly just enjoying.
- 26:48I've been doing this long
- 26:49enough to step out on the floor and say,
- 26:51hey, I'm here.
- 26:51That doesn't mean I have no fire.
- 26:54I'm going to tell you when I
- 26:56walk out on the floor, it's like,
- 26:58I'm going unbroken on those
- 26:59doubles and I'm a grab the
- 27:00bar and you know, we're laughing,
- 27:02but it was serious in the moment.
- 27:03But then as soon as I step off, it's okay.
- 27:05What does the team need?
- 27:06What are we doing?
- 27:07Where are we at?
- 27:08So I think that liberated
- 27:09some brain space in that way.
- 27:11And it allowed me to have a
- 27:12really good semifinals as we saw.
- 27:14And I think that turning that into games.
- 27:17I think I can train a lot more.
- 27:20I was giving up a lot of my
- 27:22weekends to train the team
- 27:23and help them with the worm and such.
- 27:25And that would put a little
- 27:26bit of my training on pause.
- 27:28So I would say that time wise,
- 27:30I do have more time to
- 27:31dedicate to myself and not the team.
- 27:34So I think that's the
- 27:35biggest advantage that I'll
- 27:36have now is the time to
- 27:37train the brain space,
- 27:39not programming for them
- 27:40and really just keeping
- 27:42that energy towards my own success,
- 27:44my own development and my own goals.
- 27:47I have this advantage of
- 27:49co-hosting a show with Carolyn,
- 27:51and we talk all the time.
- 27:53How is it that the two of
- 27:55you in 2018 are essentially
- 27:57tied for the spot to go to the games?
- 28:01And I would say Carolyn is
- 28:03one of your biggest fans as well.
- 28:05I'm one of our two biggest fans.
- 28:08So how do you go from like
- 28:09these competitors that tie
- 28:12for the last spot to go to
- 28:13the games and you guys have
- 28:15remained friends for all these years?
- 28:20I think there's two,
- 28:21there's two funny moments.
- 28:24Well,
- 28:24one statement I'll say in one funny
- 28:26moment, the statement,
- 28:28I think we've both done
- 28:29team sports and I think
- 28:32team sports really allow
- 28:34you to learn to like win and lose and
- 28:37I think as a team and
- 28:38sometimes it's out of your control,
- 28:41sometimes it's in your control.
- 28:42Sometimes I think as a team player,
- 28:45you appreciate others and
- 28:46you're able to say like
- 28:47good game and good job and
- 28:49appreciate others winning
- 28:51even at your loss.
- 28:52I think vice versa.
- 28:53I think Carolyn has that like tenfold.
- 28:57she can really step out of
- 28:58the moment and and still
- 29:00appreciate I remember her
- 29:02at 2018 we hugged and she's
- 29:04like I think it's you and I
- 29:05said I think it's you
- 29:06because I'm the one that
- 29:07messed up on the last event
- 29:08I did terribly almost took
- 29:09last so I thought it was
- 29:10her and it was such an
- 29:12authentic moment and when I
- 29:14when it did when it was
- 29:15announced that it was me
- 29:16You know, she had her moment, but she was,
- 29:19there was no,
- 29:20I didn't feel any resentment.
- 29:22She said, good job.
- 29:23And that stayed in my brain.
- 29:24I said, wow,
- 29:25she could have gone any
- 29:26direction with that.
- 29:27And she chose to be like the
- 29:28most sportsman person ever.
- 29:31And from that moment, I was like, wow,
- 29:33that's someone with amazing character.
- 29:35And that's someone that I have to keep.
- 29:36She's not far from me.
- 29:37I like, I have to keep in my circle and my,
- 29:39in my positive circle.
- 29:41And then 20, she went back to the games,
- 29:442021.
- 29:442022 she took the spot at
- 29:48atlas atlas that's 2022
- 29:50right I think 21 21 so 20 I
- 29:50don't know I'm 22 yeah I
- 29:52think it's 22 21 21 was
- 29:54online atlas 22 was an in-person atlas
- 30:06Yes, okay.
- 30:07So in person, so 2022,
- 30:10I remember she was going
- 30:11into the last event, the legless run,
- 30:13and obviously she had to do
- 30:14really great to keep her spot.
- 30:17And I remember talking to
- 30:17her coach and to her and
- 30:19telling the coach saying,
- 30:21I still remember last event,
- 30:23like you just being –
- 30:26there and still being a good
- 30:27person and being very very
- 30:29positive regardless of
- 30:31whether we had to compete
- 30:33and then her coach told me
- 30:34yeah I told her backstage
- 30:372022 this is like the year
- 30:38of Chloe you have to go out
- 30:40there crush those leg lists
- 30:41to earn your spot so she he
- 30:43brought that back up and
- 30:45then when I watched it and
- 30:46when she qualified I went
- 30:48under and said see
- 30:49Like this is your moment.
- 30:50You crushed it.
- 30:51You got it.
- 30:52You deserved it.
- 30:53It's all you.
- 30:54So I feel like there's a few
- 30:55moments back and forth
- 30:56there where we've
- 30:57appreciate each other's
- 30:58like success and just stayed.
- 31:01Yes, competitors,
- 31:02but just being able to
- 31:03appreciate the person under
- 31:04the competitor.
- 31:05I think that makes a huge difference.
- 31:08Yeah, that's awesome.
- 31:10So she's amazing.
- 31:12I've already gone the 30 minutes I said,
- 31:14so I'm just going to ask
- 31:14you one last question.
- 31:17And that is you're going into the games.
- 31:20You were retired for about
- 31:21two weeks and then now
- 31:24you're back to the games.
- 31:25What is your goal this year?
- 31:30I'm here.
- 31:31No, actually, interestingly enough,
- 31:342018, I qualified.
- 31:36It wasn't necessarily
- 31:38something I was aiming for
- 31:39the whole year in 2018.
- 31:40I was happy to go to regionals.
- 31:42It was like my fourth regionals.
- 31:43And I was like, well, like, OK,
- 31:45I'm getting better.
- 31:46I'm getting better.
- 31:46But always 10th, 9th,
- 31:49because I was close to fifth.
- 31:50So I was just hoping to get
- 31:52better year after year.
- 31:53And then 2018 events, a lot of gymnastics,
- 31:55the ramp just wasn't my favor.
- 31:58And I qualified and I went
- 31:59to the games kind of as a rookie,
- 32:02bright eyed, bushy tailed.
- 32:03Taking it in and now 2021, 2022,
- 32:072023 team.
- 32:09I know the game's feeling.
- 32:11I know what it's like to step out.
- 32:12I know what it's like to warm up,
- 32:14cool down.
- 32:14I have so much more
- 32:16experience than that little girl in 2018.
- 32:19Like I told Dave.
- 32:20So I feel like now 2024,
- 32:22I want to go in there being
- 32:23able to perform.
- 32:25I still want to have fun.
- 32:26I want to enjoy.
- 32:27I want to walk out, see the environment.
- 32:30But the same thing I did semis,
- 32:32which is three, two, one, go.
- 32:33I want to perform, execute.
- 32:35I have goals, intention per workout.
- 32:38That's the thing that I want
- 32:39to work on this year that I
- 32:41didn't do in 2018.
- 32:422018,
- 32:43I just did the workout like if it was
- 32:45a class workout.
- 32:47Now I want to like attack it.
- 32:49And where that lands me, that lands me.
- 32:51I don't have ranking objectives.
- 32:53I don't know, you know, making the cuts,
- 32:54not the cuts.
- 32:55I don't want to put that on my plate.
- 32:57I just want to make sure
- 32:58that every time I'm on the floor,
- 32:59like at semis,
- 33:00I do it and I do it for myself.
- 33:02I crush it and that'll land
- 33:04me where it lands me.
- 33:06Was your surprise look at semis authentic?
- 33:09Oh my God.
- 33:09Yes.
- 33:12Ninth.
- 33:13Like I don't, I don't even understand.
- 33:15I was 15 going into the last event.
- 33:1915th.
- 33:20Like this makes, it still makes no sense.
- 33:23I was trying to talk with my boyfriend.
- 33:25I'm like, how many points?
- 33:26He's like, yeah, I think I'm like,
- 33:28I am like, there's no way I was fit.
- 33:29There's no way I had no clue.
- 33:32And then Sousa was behind me
- 33:34and he was filming me.
- 33:35And I'm like, if he's filming me,
- 33:36maybe I have a chance,
- 33:38but I'm telling you it was authentic.
- 33:40I was like, what just happened?
- 33:43All I could think about was my team.
- 33:44There was a lot going on.
- 33:45It just felt overwhelming in
- 33:47the moment of how could I
- 33:48be getting this when it was
- 33:50supposed to be my team?
- 33:52There was a lot.
- 33:53It was a lot.
- 33:53I feel like people maybe were like, oh,
- 33:55she was surprised.
- 33:56I was surprised, but there was more.
- 33:59I think it was multiple
- 34:00layers to my reaction.
- 34:03Nothing would prepare you
- 34:04for the games more than that field.
- 34:07That was a stacked feeling.
- 34:10And it just showed anything
- 34:11could happen because there
- 34:12was so much middling.
- 34:14Right?
- 34:15Because it is so stacked.
- 34:18That last day,
- 34:19someone from the first heat
- 34:20finished in the top five in every event.
- 34:24That's how crazy it was.
- 34:26Absolutely.
- 34:28Well, Chloe, man,
- 34:29you become one of my
- 34:30favorite people to interview.
- 34:33Because it doesn't feel like an interview.
- 34:34It just feels like we're hanging out.
- 34:37That's how I feel too.
- 34:39But I want to thank you so
- 34:40much for taking the time.
- 34:42Enjoy the rest of your day.
- 34:43Enjoy training and we'll see you in Texas.
