- 0:00Speaker 1: The following program is produced by the tech Talk Radio Network. Hey,
- 0:03Speaker 1: this is Harold Parano and you listen to the geeks
- 0:05Speaker 1: on the radio tech Talk Radio. Welcome to another episode
- 0:09Speaker 1: of tech Talk Radio.
- 0:11Speaker 2: I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Sean too Weird, and I'm Justin
- 0:14Speaker 2: Lemme and I'll be twenty twenty five. Oh yeah, this
- 0:17Speaker 2: is the first show for the new year.
- 0:18Speaker 1: Right, I think it is. I think so, yeah, I
- 0:21Speaker 1: think it is. We've been We had to run a
- 0:23Speaker 1: couple of best ofs. We had so much stuff going on,
- 0:25Speaker 1: it's been crazy. Justin you've been doing all kinds of
- 0:28Speaker 1: fun stuff and Sean you as well.
- 0:31Speaker 3: With all football's finally over.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Yeah, are you happy?
- 0:34Speaker 3: Now?
- 0:34Speaker 2: Do you like?
- 0:35Speaker 1: What's your favorite sport at Notre Dame that you that
- 0:38Speaker 1: you kind of do?
- 0:39Speaker 3: Hockey?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Hockey?
- 0:41Speaker 3: I've been the primary lead on hockey since twenty nineteen, right,
- 0:45Speaker 3: So I actually gave it up a little bit this
- 0:47Speaker 3: year because of being down an engineer. I had to
- 0:49Speaker 3: do a little bit more of a basketball role. But
- 0:52Speaker 3: hockey is my favorite sport to watch in general. So
- 0:55Speaker 3: getting to do Notre Dame cocky and being an avid
- 0:58Speaker 3: college hockey fan. Right, So the school I went to
- 1:01Speaker 3: Farris State in Northern Michigan had a has a Division
- 1:05Speaker 3: one hockey team, right because hockey, there's not many schools
- 1:09Speaker 3: that have hockey in the college world. So they played
- 1:14Speaker 3: in the CCCHA when I was there, So we played
- 1:16Speaker 3: Michigan State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Bowling Green, we played all
- 1:19Speaker 3: the big name hockey teams. So college hockey gets to
- 1:22Speaker 3: be excited the chance to you know, when I first started,
- 1:25Speaker 3: not name, I got to be in the venue, I
- 1:27Speaker 3: got to do the broadcast from the venue side, and
- 1:29Speaker 3: now I'm in charge of it, and you know, it
- 1:31Speaker 3: went from being on NBC Sports Net to Peacock and
- 1:35Speaker 3: you know, so it's just kind of a cool progression
- 1:37Speaker 3: for me. And it's just it's something that I'm proud
- 1:39Speaker 3: of and I like hockey.
- 1:40Speaker 2: So it's got to be a blast to do. The
- 1:43Speaker 2: other thing.
- 1:43Speaker 1: We'll got a touch on this. You actually are part
- 1:47Speaker 1: of a new podcast. And I think this is super
- 1:51Speaker 1: cool too, because I did an event last week and
- 1:56Speaker 1: people walking around the event would come up and they
- 1:58Speaker 1: would talk to me, and then, you know, it was amazing, Sean,
- 2:02Speaker 1: how many people want to do a podcast now, and
- 2:06Speaker 1: how many people want to record. One guy was talking
- 2:10Speaker 1: about doing something on his favorite foods. Another said, you
- 2:14Speaker 1: know places he's traveled to. Another woman said she wanted
- 2:17Speaker 1: to do you know, advice tips and thought maybe I
- 2:21Speaker 1: could have a podcast and do it. But all of
- 2:23Speaker 1: them said, oh, but I know, it's super hard to do.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Yes, they are difficult to do, right. It's the number
- 2:30Speaker 3: one reason it's hard to do is content.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Mm hmm.
- 2:33Speaker 3: You have to be willing to create content. That's what
- 2:36Speaker 3: That's what podcasts are. Content. Somebody has to come up
- 2:40Speaker 3: with the idea. You have to have a producer, Somebody
- 2:42Speaker 3: has to do the technology, somebody has to do the
- 2:45Speaker 3: publishing right. So there's a lot of work. I will say.
- 2:49Speaker 3: The athletics department at the university, the football team started
- 2:52Speaker 3: a podcast called Wake Up the Echoes. It started two
- 2:56Speaker 3: years ago, I believe just over two years ago. Now
- 2:59Speaker 3: that took off like that format took off like crazy.
- 3:03Speaker 3: Then some other people wanted to come into a podcast
- 3:05Speaker 3: because they saw that. Then another department wanted to do
- 3:08Speaker 3: a podcast. I think we're producing out of our space
- 3:11Speaker 3: seven podcasts a week right now, wow, using our using
- 3:15Speaker 3: our podcast studio, because we have a studio. That's built
- 3:18Speaker 3: just for video podcasting, and then we have a vo
- 3:21Speaker 3: booth which is where I recorded the behind the Screens
- 3:26Speaker 3: it at ND podcast, which is because I'm part of
- 3:29Speaker 3: the Office of Information Technology. Nor Name Studios is under
- 3:32Speaker 3: that umbrella. They invited me on to talk about just
- 3:35Speaker 3: kind of what I do in terms of uh, supporting
- 3:38Speaker 3: the university and the video and the live streaming and
- 3:41Speaker 3: that kind of stuff. So I will link it to
- 3:43Speaker 3: our blog, but take us and do it. It's it's
- 3:45Speaker 3: pretty cool. It just talks about just my experience at
- 3:48Speaker 3: the university over the years and kind of like what
- 3:50Speaker 3: the technology looks like on campus and things like that.
- 3:53Speaker 3: This is also for those of you who aren't part
- 3:57Speaker 3: of the university or unders know about. Noted, there was
- 4:01Speaker 3: a large fire on campus right after the playoffootball game
- 4:05Speaker 3: on the twentieth of December, Oh that destroyed some of
- 4:08Speaker 3: our fiber and network infrastructure. So this last two weeks
- 4:13Speaker 3: since Christmas, since the beginning of the new year, we've
- 4:16Speaker 3: been working with Networking and the fiber team to reconnected
- 4:21Speaker 3: and get our infrastructure back on campus to support all
- 4:24Speaker 3: of our events. So work has been very busy for
- 4:27Speaker 3: me while also supporting ESPN events, NBC events, and all
- 4:32Speaker 3: the other academia events that we do.
- 4:33Speaker 1: So, you know, we were talking about the podcasts, say
- 4:36Speaker 1: versus radio. This is you know, a radio broadcast that
- 4:39Speaker 1: we do make available as a podcast, and I mean
- 4:42Speaker 1: we're one of those that have been around a long time,
- 4:44Speaker 1: since nineteen ninety six. We were doing that before podcasts
- 4:47Speaker 1: were podcasts. The guidelines though, for us are still a
- 4:52Speaker 1: little more stringent because Number one FCC rules, so we
- 4:55Speaker 1: do that. Number two timing we have to fit into
- 5:00Speaker 1: radio station's timing. And a radio station obviously has its
- 5:03Speaker 1: commercials just like they do here. We've been on other
- 5:06Speaker 1: stations across the country as well, same thing.
- 5:08Speaker 2: We tall it. Okay, here you go to.
- 5:10Speaker 1: A commercial break, Here you go to get So it
- 5:12Speaker 1: has to fit with a podcast. You don't really have
- 5:15Speaker 1: to worry about that, do you. I mean, do you
- 5:17Speaker 1: ever just like you open the mic and just go.
- 5:20Speaker 3: Well you do because you don't want to bore the
- 5:24Speaker 3: listeners out of their skulls.
- 5:25Speaker 2: It's true, yeh.
- 5:26Speaker 3: Like I said this earlier, it's content. You have to
- 5:29Speaker 3: have interesting content that people want to stick around and
- 5:31Speaker 3: listen to. Engaging content too. I mean that's what it is.
- 5:34Speaker 3: And that's not an easy thing to do because there's
- 5:39Speaker 3: the way the Internet is and how worldwide it is.
- 5:41Speaker 3: It's so saturated with people that know a lot about
- 5:45Speaker 3: the specific things you're going to talk about. So you
- 5:48Speaker 3: have it's very, very very competitive.
- 5:50Speaker 1: I will tell people if they are thinking about it,
- 5:53Speaker 1: and I don't know where you direct people to because
- 5:55Speaker 1: some people will say, well where do I put it?
- 5:57Speaker 2: Where do I store it?
- 5:59Speaker 1: Speaker which is it's owned by iHeartMedia, but Speaker is available.
- 6:03Speaker 1: We're on Spreaker and how that works that you get
- 6:06Speaker 1: a free account, absolutely free. You go in there as
- 6:09Speaker 1: long as you know it's one podcast you're doing, you know,
- 6:12Speaker 1: not just one episode, but one theme, one one name.
- 6:16Speaker 1: You could do that and work the Speaker podcast to
- 6:20Speaker 1: get your stats, get your shows posted, all of that,
- 6:22Speaker 1: and they do. They make that available for free, and
- 6:25Speaker 1: you'll learn the importance of a SEO and writing up
- 6:28Speaker 1: what did you guys talk about or what did your
- 6:30Speaker 1: girls talk about when you were doing your podcast? If
- 6:33Speaker 1: you're looking for a start. They even have tools that
- 6:36Speaker 1: may be available for your smartphone. So some people don't
- 6:39Speaker 1: have a microphone, like you Sean or you justin or
- 6:43Speaker 1: like we have here in the studio, you could record
- 6:45Speaker 1: it on your phone. Some people are doing that, but
- 6:48Speaker 1: again I think your right shun content and you do
- 6:52Speaker 1: have to plan that.
- 6:53Speaker 2: You can't.
- 6:53Speaker 1: You can't just go off and just start talking. I
- 6:56Speaker 1: mean unless you're really good.
- 6:58Speaker 2: You know, I mean you can He's gonna listen. I
- 7:00Speaker 2: mean it's like what they say, It's like everybody in
- 7:03Speaker 2: their and their brother has a podcast, but you know,
- 7:05Speaker 2: only the you know, the the strong survive. I guess
- 7:08Speaker 2: you could say.
- 7:09Speaker 1: If you were gonna do one, justin like a podcast,
- 7:13Speaker 1: where would you would you go music?
- 7:15Speaker 2: Because I know you.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Love music life in the navy, you know, after the Navy. Well,
- 7:20Speaker 1: what what would be like something maybe you would think
- 7:22Speaker 1: about doing.
- 7:24Speaker 2: I think I would probably be talking about video games.
- 7:29Speaker 2: I think I just you know, discussing current video games,
- 7:31Speaker 2: you know, because I'm always bouncing around from game to game,
- 7:34Speaker 2: and you know, games don't really hold my attention for
- 7:37Speaker 2: a long period of time, so I'm always trying new things.
- 7:40Speaker 2: So something that would be like, hey, what am I
- 7:42Speaker 2: playing this week? Or you know, what's this new game
- 7:45Speaker 2: that came out or whatever. I think that would probably
- 7:47Speaker 2: be a good podcast that I would do.
- 7:49Speaker 1: We've had some people on the show like Riya stream Still,
- 7:52Speaker 1: Mountain sixty four, and you know some of the artist
- 7:55Speaker 1: four two nine, Yeah, Darkness, Fortune nine, great stuff. They
- 7:58Speaker 1: and they've been really good, but they do something a
- 8:01Speaker 1: little different live video casters. Is there are there more
- 8:04Speaker 1: of a market now for live video than there is
- 8:07Speaker 1: like the recorded podcast.
- 8:09Speaker 2: Absolutely? Yeah. People people want to be visually entertained as
- 8:13Speaker 2: well as audibly entertained too. I mean, you know podcasts,
- 8:16Speaker 2: you know, you could you can listen on the go
- 8:18Speaker 2: when you're walking or when you're working or in your car.
- 8:21Speaker 2: But you know, people, people really this is that day
- 8:24Speaker 2: and age of short form. You know, people they just
- 8:28Speaker 2: doom scroll. They just want, you know, two minutes here,
- 8:31Speaker 2: five minutes there. They don't want to have an entire
- 8:35Speaker 2: hour or more that they have to listen to. I mean, honestly,
- 8:39Speaker 2: Joe Rogan, I know, I know his podcast is absolutely
- 8:42Speaker 2: just the number one podcast in the world. I just
- 8:45Speaker 2: can't get into it. Yeah, because I don't like this.
- 8:48Speaker 2: I mean, my ADHD I can't sit there and listen
- 8:51Speaker 2: for a whole hour of a topic like I want
- 8:54Speaker 2: short form content. So to have something like what we
- 8:57Speaker 2: have right here, you know, putting it on social media.
- 9:01Speaker 2: You know, I know, I don't know what's going to
- 9:02Speaker 2: go happen with TikTok or whatever, but yeah, putting clips
- 9:06Speaker 2: of of interesting topics that we might be talking about,
- 9:09Speaker 2: putting that up on Instagram or TikTok or Twitter x
- 9:13Speaker 2: you know or feven Facebook. Really that's kind of what
- 9:16Speaker 2: people want to see. Yeah, and that's grown a lot.
- 9:19Speaker 2: And I've seen our you know, we use Opus.
- 9:22Speaker 1: I'll tell people use Opu's clip for that, and we
- 9:24Speaker 1: pay a monthly and we can get we can throw
- 9:27Speaker 1: stuff up and it will create a clip based on
- 9:30Speaker 1: what it feels could go viral. But it's also brought
- 9:33Speaker 1: people back to listen to the actual podcast itself, to
- 9:38Speaker 1: actually subscribe. Our subscribe accounts going up. So if we're
- 9:41Speaker 1: talking about something that maybe makes them go, oh wow,
- 9:44Speaker 1: he's got Justin's talking about games, I like this, or
- 9:47Speaker 1: Sean's talking about picking up a satellite dish on a
- 9:50Speaker 1: roof in the snow. Sorry, Sean, I've done it exactly.
- 9:56Speaker 3: I mean, you know what I'm gonna I'm gonna find
- 9:57Speaker 3: a great clip. So back when I work at Fox,
- 10:00Speaker 3: I strapped a GoPro to my head. Well, used to
- 10:03Speaker 3: go pro strap from my Yeah, and actually recorded myself
- 10:05Speaker 3: one night after a huge snowstorm scraping off all of
- 10:08Speaker 3: the satellite dishes at Fox. No, they had to go
- 10:11Speaker 3: out because we could, because you know, once they get
- 10:13Speaker 3: covered with snow, they don't they don't receive for transmits.
- 10:15Speaker 2: Oh you're kidding. I didn't know that.
- 10:17Speaker 3: So well, yeah, I can't get through the snow.
- 10:19Speaker 2: Wow.
- 10:20Speaker 3: No, I'll find that clip and share it so we
- 10:22Speaker 3: can put it on the blog.
- 10:23Speaker 2: We get one.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Yeah, we got to see that and tie it to
- 10:25Speaker 1: the do you know who that guy is there? Who's
- 10:27Speaker 1: that guy lying on the floor? Your famous?
- 10:31Speaker 2: So yeah YouTube video.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Yeah, I didn't make this kid drink you know the
- 10:35Speaker 3: Macsta Google Micosta County Rave twenty sixteen. That was cript
- 10:41Speaker 3: that I shot when I was looking at at Fox.
- 10:44Speaker 3: That dude.
- 10:44Speaker 2: They made it on Jimmy Kimmel and yeah.
- 10:46Speaker 3: It made it. Yeah, it made Jimmy Kimmel's top five
- 10:49Speaker 3: news clips of the year.
- 10:50Speaker 2: That was awesome. That was really good.
- 10:52Speaker 1: All right, you mentioned it justin you said it, and
- 10:56Speaker 1: we can't be a tech show and not.
- 10:58Speaker 2: Talk about it. Ticked.
- 11:00Speaker 1: I know we all have different views on social media.
- 11:02Speaker 1: Let's face it, Sean, you have a very limited, very
- 11:06Speaker 1: limited footprint on social media.
- 11:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:09Speaker 3: Reddit and snapchat are the only two that I actively use.
- 11:12Speaker 1: I found myself using Reddit a little more because you
- 11:16Speaker 1: guys talking about it so much, and then when I
- 11:19Speaker 1: need to look up something, I go, oh, wow, look
- 11:20Speaker 1: at that. I've found good advice, products not to buy even,
- 11:24Speaker 1: you know, or products to get.
- 11:26Speaker 2: But you know, I I think with social media though,
- 11:28Speaker 2: it's just like you know, you're you're gonna get what
- 11:32Speaker 2: your deepest, darkest, you know, unknown desires want to give you.
- 11:37Speaker 2: I mean there sounds like a late night movie on Cinemax. Well,
- 11:41Speaker 2: I mean think about it. You know, people people sit
- 11:43Speaker 2: there and tell me they're like, well, I don't use
- 11:46Speaker 2: blah blah platform because it's just full of you know,
- 11:51Speaker 2: uh stuff that I don't agree with, whether it be
- 11:53Speaker 2: politically or just you know, in a general like snap
- 11:56Speaker 2: yeah or yeah anything really and it's just like, okay, well,
- 12:00Speaker 2: you know, I I hear what you're saying, but I
- 12:03Speaker 2: don't agree. Like I'll give you an example. You know,
- 12:04Speaker 2: I tell people I use X a lot more often
- 12:07Speaker 2: now than I ever did before, and people are like Wow,
- 12:10Speaker 2: I can't believe you would use that. It's so horrible.
- 12:12Speaker 2: It's so horrible, and it's not I mean, it's the
- 12:15Speaker 2: it's the content that you have engaged with. Is the
- 12:19Speaker 2: algorithm is going to keep serving you that content because
- 12:22Speaker 2: it wants you to stay on the platform. So if
- 12:24Speaker 2: you you know, if you find stuff that you don't
- 12:26Speaker 2: agree with, whether it be politically or whatever, and you
- 12:29Speaker 2: sit there and doom scroll through it, or or you
- 12:31Speaker 2: click through it and you're looking at comments and stuff,
- 12:34Speaker 2: the platform is going to think that you want to
- 12:36Speaker 2: see more of that content. You can curate your social
- 12:41Speaker 2: media to what you want it to be. For instance,
- 12:43Speaker 2: you know X, I don't get any of that stuff.
- 12:45Speaker 2: But yeah, occasionally i'll get something I'm like, yeah, I
- 12:48Speaker 2: really don't want to see that, and I just scroll
- 12:50Speaker 2: by it, or or if it's really bad, I'll just
- 12:52Speaker 2: say block or whatever. But honestly, my you know, X
- 12:56Speaker 2: feed is full of technology, it's full of crypto, it's
- 13:00Speaker 2: full of local news, games, video games, stuff like that.
- 13:05Speaker 2: So I don't really see all the stuff that maybe
- 13:07Speaker 2: somebody else might pull up backs and say, look at
- 13:09Speaker 2: it's all it is is talking about you know, Trump
- 13:11Speaker 2: or whatever, you know, it might be. I don't see
- 13:14Speaker 2: all that stuff because I curate it. Same thing goes
- 13:16Speaker 2: for Reddit, you know Reddit. I use Reddit every single day.
- 13:19Speaker 2: But Reddit, for me is starting to get to the
- 13:21Speaker 2: point where it's just an echo chamber of like minded
- 13:25Speaker 2: individuals that I may not agree with, and I just
- 13:27Speaker 2: constantly see that same content over and over. But again,
- 13:31Speaker 2: you can curate it. Yeah, And I try to stay
- 13:34Speaker 2: away from the main subs and subreddits. I try to,
- 13:39Speaker 2: you know, stay in my little zone of technology, video games, golf,
- 13:45Speaker 2: disc golf, you know whatever, and I just visit those communities.
- 13:48Speaker 2: But you know, yeah, social media it can be good
- 13:52Speaker 2: for certain things, but it can also be really bad
- 13:54Speaker 2: if you're not really sure what you're doing.
- 13:56Speaker 1: I know, people like Sean you did this. I mean
- 13:59Speaker 1: that that's it. Pulling back. I'm not going to be
- 14:02Speaker 1: on this platform anymore. And they have said that their
- 14:05Speaker 1: quality of life is actually a little bit better.
- 14:07Speaker 2: Oh absolutely, So if I look back, i'd have to
- 14:11Speaker 2: look to you.
- 14:12Speaker 3: I don't even remember what my last post was, but
- 14:14Speaker 3: I believe it was late winter of nineteen twenty nineteen
- 14:18Speaker 3: or early spring of twenty twenty. That was the last
- 14:22Speaker 3: time I posted anything on Facebook. Yeah, and it was.
- 14:26Speaker 3: It was weird at first, right, because if you don't
- 14:30Speaker 3: have it on your phone or your muscle memories used
- 14:35Speaker 3: to you scroll up in your phone, you hit Facebook,
- 14:37Speaker 3: you scroll up in your phone, you get read it whatever.
- 14:39Speaker 3: I was noticing that as soon as I'd pick up
- 14:41Speaker 3: my phone, I'd try and where Facebook go. So there
- 14:45Speaker 3: were things that I just found were little nuances that
- 14:49Speaker 3: were like, oh that that really that was just muscle memory.
- 14:51Speaker 3: That was just me feeling that addiction of I needed
- 14:55Speaker 3: to view that. I needed to see that.
- 14:56Speaker 1: It's like walking in It's like walking into the kitchen
- 14:58Speaker 1: and opening the fridge when you just did it like
- 15:01Speaker 1: thirty seconds ago, right.
- 15:03Speaker 3: Content the contest didn't change, but you were expecting a
- 15:05Speaker 3: different result. Yeah, And it took a little while, but
- 15:10Speaker 3: I did notice that things just seemed to slow down
- 15:13Speaker 3: a little bit. Right. I was able to take in
- 15:15Speaker 3: more at home with Caitlin. I was able to do
- 15:18Speaker 3: more meaningful things at home with the time that I
- 15:22Speaker 3: would have done been scrolling on Facebook or whatever. Now
- 15:26Speaker 3: some other things have replaced that, so I'm still not
- 15:28Speaker 3: completely gone from that feeling, but I was getting projects
- 15:33Speaker 3: completed that I wanted to get done at home. There
- 15:36Speaker 3: were things that and it felt like they had more
- 15:40Speaker 3: meaning to them. It was just this weird disconnect from
- 15:45Speaker 3: technology back to a physical you know, I was reading books,
- 15:49Speaker 3: I was reading magazine. You know, I was doing more
- 15:52Speaker 3: not on my phone.
- 15:53Speaker 1: Right right now, there's options now too, and I found
- 15:58Speaker 1: and I have found recently, and I'm not going to
- 16:00Speaker 1: be one of those same I'm leaving to Facebook. I'm like,
- 16:02Speaker 1: I have found that. I don't know if it's an algorithm,
- 16:06Speaker 1: but other people have said the same thing. As you're scrolling,
- 16:09Speaker 1: it's more ads. It's gotten pretty it's gotten pretty ridiculous,
- 16:14Speaker 1: where it's you get an ad, then you get hey,
- 16:17Speaker 1: you might want to follow them, you have to remember
- 16:19Speaker 1: that that person is paying for that. Like if we
- 16:24Speaker 1: wanted to, we could say, I Facebook, I want you
- 16:26Speaker 1: to show everybody in this zip code that's within this
- 16:30Speaker 1: age group our page so they can like it.
- 16:33Speaker 2: And that's what everybody's doing.
- 16:34Speaker 1: And so you're being just inundated now with some of that.
- 16:39Speaker 1: The other thing is you see a video under reels
- 16:41Speaker 1: and you may think, oh, that looks cool, click on it.
- 16:43Speaker 1: You click on it, that you're gonna be fed the
- 16:45Speaker 1: same type of content or this from the same creator
- 16:49Speaker 1: as well, even if you're not following them. So you
- 16:52Speaker 1: gotta got you have to kind of remember that. And
- 16:53Speaker 1: it's gotten their algorithm has gotten really bad.
- 16:56Speaker 3: You know.
- 16:56Speaker 2: Going back to your original piece about you know TikTok,
- 16:59Speaker 2: you know TikTok. The you know, half of the country
- 17:04Speaker 2: or whatever believes that TikTok is getting banned because you know,
- 17:08Speaker 2: the Chinese government is collecting you know, sensitive data on
- 17:12Speaker 2: the users. Yeah, Byte Dance, they're collecting sensitive data and
- 17:15Speaker 2: it's a national security thing. The other half of the
- 17:18Speaker 2: country believes that they just are doing it because the
- 17:21Speaker 2: tech billionaires are colluding with the president to create you know,
- 17:26Speaker 2: one particular social media that everybody's going to use, and
- 17:30Speaker 2: that it's you know, it's I just don't, you know,
- 17:32Speaker 2: I don't know what to believe. But you know, TikTok.
- 17:36Speaker 2: I never really use TikTok all that much, so I
- 17:38Speaker 2: really could care less whatever happens to it, to be honest,
- 17:41Speaker 2: I never really used Snapchat all that much, you know,
- 17:43Speaker 2: I use Facebook anymore.
- 17:46Speaker 3: I used TikTok for a little while. Yeah, I thought
- 17:49Speaker 3: it was great at first, right, I was able to
- 17:51Speaker 3: curate it a little bit, like most of it was
- 17:53Speaker 3: like monster trucks and trucks and dirt biking and you know,
- 17:56Speaker 3: outdoors and stuff, which I like. But then I could
- 17:59Speaker 3: tell its slowly curated to my age group, my gender,
- 18:03Speaker 3: some of my other ideologies and things that I follow
- 18:06Speaker 3: on other social medias. And it was interesting because Caitlin
- 18:09Speaker 3: and I compared are TikTok's at one point when she
- 18:12Speaker 3: still had it, and it was like Kate was like, oh,
- 18:15Speaker 3: I'm getting all this classical FM and music and theater
- 18:19Speaker 3: and arts and stuff, and I'm like, well, I'm getting
- 18:22Speaker 3: women trucks and Donald Trump.
- 18:27Speaker 1: You dude, That's why I was getting weird TikTok dances.
- 18:35Speaker 3: And so I just was like, this is not I mean,
- 18:38Speaker 3: it just was a little too much. And I could
- 18:41Speaker 3: tell that I was definitely on it a lot, and
- 18:43Speaker 3: there were some of the creator there were some creators
- 18:45Speaker 3: that I really enjoyed watching and getting updates from and stuff.
- 18:47Speaker 3: But I was just like it just it was eating
- 18:49Speaker 3: away at me, like I'm spending way too much time
- 18:51Speaker 3: scrolling on this and it's just I didn't care for
- 18:54Speaker 3: the way it just was automatically just pushing this type
- 18:57Speaker 3: of content into my face.
- 18:58Speaker 2: It's part of it.
- 18:59Speaker 1: It's really interesting Sean too, and justin we've taken our
- 19:03Speaker 1: content that we've created right and we put it on TikTok.
- 19:06Speaker 1: And the numbers were always higher on TikTok until recently
- 19:11Speaker 1: we started to see that number growing on Instagram on
- 19:16Speaker 1: the reels portion of that, so I think it's you know,
- 19:19Speaker 1: as you do that, maybe it'll get better. But I
- 19:21Speaker 1: always wondered, like, why are the numbers so high on
- 19:24Speaker 1: TikTok versus reels. I mean, you should be happy for them,
- 19:28Speaker 1: but they weren't necessarily coming from you know, all my friends.
- 19:31Speaker 1: I didn't have a I don't have a huge friends
- 19:32Speaker 1: list on there, so yeah, it was it was kind
- 19:35Speaker 1: of bizarre.
- 19:36Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 19:36Speaker 1: You know, Kerrie Morten, who I worked with when I
- 19:40Speaker 1: was in another station in town, she wrote something because
- 19:43Speaker 1: she was so glad that TikTok was going away when
- 19:45Speaker 1: and when they first when it disappeared, she wrote this
- 19:49Speaker 1: long I mean, I want to say eight paragraph thing
- 19:52Speaker 1: about the data that they're taking and by Dance is
- 19:55Speaker 1: giving it that of nothing holding the back and they're
- 19:57Speaker 1: giving it to the government and we might think, why
- 20:00Speaker 1: I do they care about what I'm doing? But if
- 20:02Speaker 1: you as a collective though, that could be damaging. And
- 20:05Speaker 1: I read it and I thought, man, I really liked
- 20:06Speaker 1: what she wrote and there's some sense to it. And
- 20:10Speaker 1: then once, you know, the next day, Yeah, everybody woke
- 20:13Speaker 1: up and TikTok was back.
- 20:16Speaker 2: So was it a pr thing?
- 20:18Speaker 3: Did they?
- 20:19Speaker 2: They? Yeah?
- 20:20Speaker 1: And then it was funny how many people were going,
- 20:22Speaker 1: let's can we use our VPN? Can we use our VPN?
- 20:25Speaker 3: No?
- 20:25Speaker 1: Because these servers were based in the United States that
- 20:29Speaker 1: held the US data.
- 20:31Speaker 2: It's the data then was moving.
- 20:33Speaker 1: You know, across the country, across the world. So yeah,
- 20:37Speaker 1: that's that's one thing. So I don't know will it
- 20:40Speaker 1: will it survive? They got ninety days, according to what
- 20:44Speaker 1: the new administration is saying, to come up with some
- 20:47Speaker 1: kind of a plan.
- 20:48Speaker 2: I thought it was seventy five days. Is it seventy five?
- 20:50Speaker 2: I thought it was nice maybe yeah, but.
- 20:53Speaker 3: Not enough work to go away forever. Unfortunately, I don't think.
- 20:56Speaker 2: But yeah, no, I think I think it's just going
- 20:57Speaker 2: to be that they're going to try to, you know,
- 20:59Speaker 2: get it to be know, Elon Musk is gonna buy
- 21:01Speaker 2: it or you know, there's even talk of what's his name,
- 21:04Speaker 2: mister beast, you know really, yeah, he was, he was
- 21:08Speaker 2: putting in a bid I know, mister wonderful Kevin Leary
- 21:10Speaker 2: from the Shark Tank. Yeah, so you know, I don't
- 21:14Speaker 2: know what's gonna happen with it. But but why you know, Well,
- 21:17Speaker 2: that's the thing why. I mean, it's a it's a money.
- 21:19Speaker 2: It's a it's a money. I mean, it's it's it's
- 21:21Speaker 2: it's money. Just sitting there being people the money.
- 21:25Speaker 3: I mean, it's it's money. It's so much money.
- 21:27Speaker 2: People, they just don't want China involved in it.
- 21:30Speaker 3: People will realize how much money is involved in harvesting
- 21:33Speaker 3: people's data and pushing ads into your faces. They don't
- 21:36Speaker 3: get it.
- 21:37Speaker 2: Absolutely are.
- 21:38Speaker 3: It is a free product. As Matt would say, you
- 21:41Speaker 3: are the product. Yeah, because they are selling you. They're
- 21:45Speaker 3: selling your likeness, they are selling your images, they're selling
- 21:48Speaker 3: your videos, they're selling your content. China doesn't give a
- 21:51Speaker 3: rats petuit about your content. They will turn it around
- 21:55Speaker 3: and remarket it and sell it in China and in
- 21:57Speaker 3: Asia and other parts of the world, and you will
- 21:59Speaker 3: never see it.
- 22:00Speaker 1: Yeah, that is interesting because your content you're putting up there,
- 22:03Speaker 1: then somebody else could be using it. So yeah, that
- 22:06Speaker 1: really does kind of make you wonder. And I still
- 22:08Speaker 1: want to know what is a petuit?
- 22:12Speaker 3: There are no please, we talked about we talked about
- 22:15Speaker 3: it a little while ago. We're we have to abide
- 22:17Speaker 3: by the FCC rules and phrases.
- 22:21Speaker 2: We can't say, yeah, all right.
- 22:23Speaker 1: If you think of social media sites that have gone,
- 22:26Speaker 1: that have disappeared, is there one that stands out? I mean,
- 22:29Speaker 1: think about it. We had twelve seconds. Twelve seconds was
- 22:33Speaker 1: was short form video that could be twelve seconds or less.
- 22:36Speaker 1: If you remember that one. You had my Space, you
- 22:39Speaker 1: know vine which went vine vie Vine Yeah, vibe journal
- 22:46Speaker 1: live journalist that DV and art d.
- 22:50Speaker 2: V and art divan art is still around.
- 22:52Speaker 3: I guess it's still around, It's just not nearly.
- 22:55Speaker 2: That actually a social media I thought that was just
- 22:57Speaker 2: a place to put it.
- 22:58Speaker 3: Was it kind of blood did the lines between art
- 23:01Speaker 3: and social media. People could put content on there, but
- 23:04Speaker 3: then it was easier to put content in other places.
- 23:06Speaker 3: So a lot of people left.
- 23:07Speaker 1: I thought my Space was still around too. Plus Google Plus, yeah, yeah,
- 23:12Speaker 1: hangouts or whatever. Yeah, you had AOL they had them.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Yeahoo had play chats yep, yeah.
- 23:19Speaker 2: Bro aoa instant messengers where it's at. That's where it
- 23:22Speaker 2: all began. That ICQ yep Q is ICQ.
- 23:28Speaker 3: There's a there's a local one to my hometown that
- 23:32Speaker 3: we used to tell net into all the time growing up,
- 23:34Speaker 3: called Luminet. We had a server local in Luddington that
- 23:37Speaker 3: we would always connect on and chat and boasting forums
- 23:40Speaker 3: and stuff. So that was my early early days of
- 23:43Speaker 3: tell netting and learning how to do that kind of stuff.
- 23:45Speaker 1: So I think a lot of us remember bbs is too.
- 23:48Speaker 1: You know, you'd find about a good local BBS you
- 23:50Speaker 1: could dial into and that was your that was your connection. Yeah,
- 23:54Speaker 1: did you guys ever use BBS's or am I just
- 23:56Speaker 1: showing my age?
- 23:57Speaker 2: I can't say I used BBS but no, I mean
- 24:01Speaker 2: I pretty much started right around the time like AOL
- 24:03Speaker 2: chat rooms and ICQ and ail and to Messenger and
- 24:07Speaker 2: even MSN Messenger used to come default with.
- 24:11Speaker 3: I mean ms Messenger really kind of revolutionized like the
- 24:15Speaker 3: messaging chat platform right because they were the first ones
- 24:17Speaker 3: to do video chat calling, which eventually morphed into Skype.
- 24:21Speaker 3: Which Skype for what it was at the time and
- 24:24Speaker 3: still should be, was a very dominant video calling platform.
- 24:28Speaker 3: It they had. They had the lowest latency, the highest quality,
- 24:32Speaker 3: and it was free. Now you could pay and you
- 24:35Speaker 3: could do international calling and stuff. But Skype, I don't
- 24:38Speaker 3: think Microsoft dropped the ball hard by not pushing Skype
- 24:43Speaker 3: a lot harder than whatever they rebranded teams whatever it's called,
- 24:48Speaker 3: right like skyp They should have rebranded Skype and pushed
- 24:51Speaker 3: Skype heavily back onto the masses.
- 24:53Speaker 1: But Zoom came along and Zoom ate it up. Especially
- 24:56Speaker 1: during the pandemic. That was it was either Skype or Zoom,
- 25:00Speaker 1: and Zoom where it was.
- 25:02Speaker 3: You look at it, look at it from education an
- 25:04Speaker 3: education standpoint, Zoom had a little tiny bit of a
- 25:07Speaker 3: foothold on the education market and then when the need came,
- 25:12Speaker 3: they flipped on a switch and said here's five thousand
- 25:15Speaker 3: new servers go, and they were able to take out
- 25:19Speaker 3: as much capacity as possible very quickly. And I mean
- 25:23Speaker 3: education was the number one driver for for content online
- 25:27Speaker 3: during the pandemic. So that's where Zoom kind of got
- 25:30Speaker 3: its luck and draw from all right.
- 25:32Speaker 2: We got to take a break.
- 25:33Speaker 1: We got a couple of listener questions as well. You
- 25:35Speaker 1: can drop yours to US tech guys at tech talk
- 25:37Speaker 1: radio dot com. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm.
- 25:40Speaker 3: Sean de Weird, and I'm Justin.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Let me find us on x at tech talk Radio.
- 25:44Speaker 2: We'll be right back and now back to tech talk Radio.
- 25:49Speaker 3: During the break, we were talking about let's do a
- 25:51Speaker 3: listener question. Yeah, right, question. I drew the short straw.
- 25:57Speaker 3: I am hoping you can help me. I use my
- 26:00Speaker 3: PC laptop a lot for everything. I've run out of slots.
- 26:04Speaker 3: I have two USB slots and I added a camera
- 26:07Speaker 3: and a backup drive. I need more.
- 26:10Speaker 2: Oh wow?
- 26:10Speaker 3: The best way to add these ports? What do I
- 26:13Speaker 3: need to get? Valerie from Palms Desert?
- 26:17Speaker 2: All right? Thank you? Get a powered USB hub?
- 26:21Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, there's a lot of a lot of them
- 26:23Speaker 1: on the market. Belcan has them easy Connect They work
- 26:29Speaker 1: a lot. Easy Connect I think works a lot with
- 26:31Speaker 1: Mac but Belcan, Uh, just a little hub. How many
- 26:35Speaker 1: ports do you think somebody should have? I mean I've
- 26:37Speaker 1: always told people, if you're gonna buy a laptop, buy
- 26:39Speaker 1: one with at least three USB ports and one hgum
- 26:43Speaker 1: my port. I mean yeah, I would say three to four, right, Yeah,
- 26:47Speaker 1: because the budget laptops you're gonna find have one to
- 26:51Speaker 1: two USB ports and you're gonna run out quick. One
- 26:56Speaker 1: thing is if you're if you're using a USB mouse,
- 26:59Speaker 1: like use a mouse instead of using that track pad,
- 27:01Speaker 1: which I don't know anybody that would want to use
- 27:03Speaker 1: the trackpad. But so you get a USB mouse, well,
- 27:06Speaker 1: that's gonna take up a slot, right because you've got
- 27:08Speaker 1: to plug the transmitter key in there if your.
- 27:11Speaker 2: Laptop supports it.
- 27:13Speaker 1: Get a Bluetooth mouse that will free up another USB
- 27:18Speaker 1: a port because if you're already you know, broadcast at
- 27:20Speaker 1: a Bluetooth signal, you could connect your mouse to that
- 27:23Speaker 1: and it just it's great because it'll give you an
- 27:25Speaker 1: extra extra port. And if you want to use a
- 27:29Speaker 1: camera and a backup drive though, then you're gonna you're
- 27:31Speaker 1: gonna need some kind of a hub.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean realistically, one USB output to a hub
- 27:38Speaker 3: will generate three to four more based on the peripheral
- 27:42Speaker 3: you buy, right, if you're buying one that can do
- 27:45Speaker 3: multiple things USB to Ethernet and USB or USB to
- 27:51Speaker 3: Ethernet and DisplayPort or something like the USBC.
- 27:55Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like a multifunction hub. Yeah, yeah, I've got
- 27:58Speaker 2: one that will do I think what it is it
- 28:00Speaker 2: has an SD card slot, has an Ethernet port, three
- 28:05Speaker 2: or four USB ports, and it all operates off of
- 28:09Speaker 2: just a single USB and it doesn't even need to
- 28:11Speaker 2: be powered. It's not a powered hub. So stuff like
- 28:15Speaker 2: that you can find on Amazon for you know, fifteen
- 28:17Speaker 2: twenty thirty bucks at the most. But like a yeah,
- 28:20Speaker 2: like a multifunction one. I really like mine the one
- 28:22Speaker 2: I have because it does have that SD card slot.
- 28:24Speaker 2: So if I want to put my camera, if I
- 28:27Speaker 2: want to put the SD card in, I don't have
- 28:29Speaker 2: to just connect the camera. I can just take the
- 28:31Speaker 2: SD card out, put it into the hub, and connect
- 28:33Speaker 2: it to my laptop. Bam, I got all my pictures.
- 28:35Speaker 1: I've got one that looks like a pistol grip, and
- 28:38Speaker 1: you could put all your SD cards in there right
- 28:41Speaker 1: inside this device slides out.
- 28:43Speaker 2: It has a.
- 28:44Speaker 1: Carabiner on there, so you can, you know, attach it
- 28:46Speaker 1: to your laptop bag and the whole bit. And then
- 28:49Speaker 1: when you need to read an SD card onto your
- 28:52Speaker 1: laptop or you know, or you need one for you
- 28:54Speaker 1: your phone, or maybe you've got a regular phone to
- 28:57Speaker 1: your or a camera, I should say, and you're walking around,
- 29:00Speaker 1: you just pull that out and plug it in and
- 29:01Speaker 1: it plugs into USBC. I love that thing and I
- 29:04Speaker 1: think I bought it for like forty bucks on Amazon,
- 29:08Speaker 1: and I wish you could remember the name of the manufacturer.
- 29:10Speaker 1: I'll put a link up on our on our blog.
- 29:12Speaker 1: But that one's pretty good. Balcan you can never go
- 29:16Speaker 1: wrong with. There's usually all kinds of products that they
- 29:19Speaker 1: offer that. Logitech also has hubs as well, so you
- 29:23Speaker 1: could do stuff with Logitech device, you know, if you're
- 29:26Speaker 1: gonna go with the name brands. But there are some
- 29:28Speaker 1: you know, third party brands out there that will will
- 29:31Speaker 1: work pretty good.
- 29:32Speaker 2: Anchor Anchor oh yeah, ank ctteries and stuff. Anchor is
- 29:35Speaker 2: good though, Yeah, yeah, I can't.
- 29:37Speaker 3: I Can is one that like, I k A n
- 29:40Speaker 3: is one that makes a lot of dongles that I like.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Balcon Belcan is known for theirs. Yeah, there's there's tons
- 29:47Speaker 3: you can You can do a good search and just
- 29:48Speaker 3: read the reviews.
- 29:50Speaker 1: How much a Valerie is gonna spend could be anywhere
- 29:52Speaker 1: from what fifteen to fifteen.
- 29:55Speaker 3: To twenty bucks?
- 29:56Speaker 2: All right, you look up.
- 29:57Speaker 1: The low end and if you're listening and you're thinking, well,
- 29:59Speaker 1: I've had great experience with my hub, feel free to
- 30:02Speaker 1: drop us a line so we could share that on
- 30:03Speaker 1: another show. It's tech Guys at tech Talk Radio dot com.
- 30:09Speaker 2: Man, I I'll be honest with you.
- 30:11Speaker 1: I had like a crazy week when it came to
- 30:14Speaker 1: backing up and data. So I have a So I
- 30:19Speaker 1: have a drive. It was a Seagate desktop hub and
- 30:23Speaker 1: I think I may have mentioned this at the end
- 30:25Speaker 1: of our show a couple of weeks ago. And it
- 30:28Speaker 1: started making a weird sound and it would power on,
- 30:31Speaker 1: power off, and I reached out to five Star. They're great,
- 30:36Speaker 1: They're great data recovery company in Glendale. And when they
- 30:41Speaker 1: got back to me, they told me, Okay, it could
- 30:42Speaker 1: be this. Don't fire don't fire it up anymore. If
- 30:45Speaker 1: it's making a sound, don't just you know, you got
- 30:47Speaker 1: to send it in. So I got to save up
- 30:48Speaker 1: my my nickels and dimes. But in the meantime, I
- 30:51Speaker 1: needed to find some data that was on this drive.
- 30:54Speaker 1: I had moved everything from a Western Digital to the Seagate,
- 31:01Speaker 1: and of course that Western Digital was kind of acting up,
- 31:06Speaker 1: and so it was a matter of okay, how am
- 31:08Speaker 1: I going to get How am I going to get
- 31:09Speaker 1: this data? And wouldn't you know, the Western Digital that
- 31:14Speaker 1: I had originally moved it from I had pulled out
- 31:18Speaker 1: of an enclosure and was sitting in a pile of
- 31:21Speaker 1: drives and I found that drive, but I had deleted
- 31:25Speaker 1: the data off of that. So I'm like, oh my gosh,
- 31:29Speaker 1: what am I going to do? I went I found
- 31:32Speaker 1: I had a program years ago called Recover My Data
- 31:34Speaker 1: from I think it's get Data, an Australian company, and
- 31:37Speaker 1: suddenly their licensing isn't working anymore. They've had some I
- 31:41Speaker 1: think it's a Windows eleven problem. So I found this
- 31:45Speaker 1: software called ease us and that's e eas e US.
- 31:51Speaker 1: They make a partition manager which can help you partition
- 31:55Speaker 1: your drives out. They make data recovery software, so I thought, well,
- 32:01Speaker 1: let's run this data recovery software.
- 32:04Speaker 2: So I run the software.
- 32:05Speaker 1: It goes through it looks for deleted files of type,
- 32:08Speaker 1: so you can do video, photos, documents, or a complete
- 32:12Speaker 1: Here's what we found that had been deleted that we're
- 32:15Speaker 1: able to see. And then I was able to do
- 32:19Speaker 1: a recovery and I got probably eighty percent of my
- 32:22Speaker 1: files back just by running that software. It took almost
- 32:27Speaker 1: took almost two days, but I got it back and
- 32:30Speaker 1: I started on a drive. So I want to remind
- 32:32Speaker 1: everybody be redundant, store on more than one backup device,
- 32:37Speaker 1: don't trust it. Just because you got a backup doesn't
- 32:39Speaker 1: mean you're safe, because if that backup goes, you're still
- 32:43Speaker 1: you know, up the paddle. You could do cloud storage
- 32:47Speaker 1: as well, but it was a lot, you know, that's
- 32:49Speaker 1: a lot of space.
- 32:50Speaker 2: Eight terabytes. We had four terabytes.
- 32:52Speaker 1: To say, I probably still will go to five Star
- 32:55Speaker 1: and I'll spend the seven or eight hundred bucks for
- 32:58Speaker 1: them to do the data recover if they can, and
- 33:02Speaker 1: we'll see what they come up with.
- 33:03Speaker 2: But yeah, that's the US is actually a really good
- 33:07Speaker 2: I mean I've used a lot of their stuff before
- 33:09Speaker 2: in the past. It was like, it.
- 33:11Speaker 1: Surprisingly easy to run and it was quick, quicker than
- 33:15Speaker 1: recover my data. Sand Disk has their new desktop drive
- 33:19Speaker 1: which I absolutely love, and they have software that comes
- 33:22Speaker 1: with it so you can run that software, especially on
- 33:26Speaker 1: their extreme drives, and that's a data recovery software as well.
- 33:30Speaker 1: I found that the easy US worked a little better
- 33:32Speaker 1: in this case for me to be able to do
- 33:34Speaker 1: the recovery. But if you ever run into that, take
- 33:37Speaker 1: a look at easy US, I think you'd be pleased.
- 33:40Speaker 1: Now I have to run I have to run a
- 33:44Speaker 1: software because I did a five hundred gigabyte to a
- 33:46Speaker 1: one terrorbyte, so I have to run the partition magic
- 33:49Speaker 1: software so I can partition and get the rest of
- 33:51Speaker 1: the space back.
- 33:52Speaker 2: But yeah, that kind of stuff happens.
- 33:55Speaker 1: We were talking about games earlier to Justin, and you
- 33:58Speaker 1: were talking about a game that you've gotten back into it.
- 34:00Speaker 1: I wanted you to tell our listeners about it.
- 34:03Speaker 2: It involves zombies. Oh yeah, yeah, it's a game. It's
- 34:08Speaker 2: on Steam, it's a PC game. It came back out.
- 34:11Speaker 2: It came out like I think it was a November
- 34:13Speaker 2: of twenty thirteen. So it's a decently old game. And
- 34:17Speaker 2: the visual style of it looks a lot like the
- 34:21Speaker 2: original SIMS, where it's kind of like this, yeah, three
- 34:25Speaker 2: quarter top down view you're kind of looking at from
- 34:28Speaker 2: the side, and the artwork, the style of it looks
- 34:31Speaker 2: a lot like the original SIMS video game. But yeah,
- 34:35Speaker 2: it's basically a game where you are a random person
- 34:39Speaker 2: who has survived a zombie apocalypse and now you've just
- 34:43Speaker 2: got to see how long you can survive in the game.
- 34:46Speaker 2: And the best part about it is when you go
- 34:49Speaker 2: into the game, it tells you straight up, there is
- 34:52Speaker 2: no beating this game. You will die like you will
- 34:55Speaker 2: die in this game. This is this is the story
- 34:58Speaker 2: of how you die. That's exactly what it says. Great,
- 35:02Speaker 2: but it's basically it's it's it's your character. You're running
- 35:05Speaker 2: around from building to building. They're all obviously abandoned, you know,
- 35:09Speaker 2: some are zombie invested, some aren't. But you're you're just
- 35:12Speaker 2: simply trying to gather up supplies like food and bandages
- 35:16Speaker 2: and you know, gasoline for your vehicle or construction stuff
- 35:20Speaker 2: so you can build up defenses. And then you kind
- 35:23Speaker 2: of set up your your little base and you try
- 35:26Speaker 2: to just fend off the horde of zombies as long
- 35:29Speaker 2: as you possibly can, until you eventually will succumb to
- 35:33Speaker 2: the zombies. What's the name of this one again, Project
- 35:37Speaker 2: Zomboid Zomboid and yeah, I d yeah, Project Zomboid again.
- 35:43Speaker 2: It's a it's an old game. The reason I'm getting
- 35:45Speaker 2: back into it though, is because they just came out.
- 35:48Speaker 2: The developer. It's an indie developer. I mean, it's like
- 35:50Speaker 2: it's this very small team people that have met working
- 35:53Speaker 2: on this game, but they came out with a new bill.
- 35:57Speaker 2: They call it Build forty two. It's just like version
- 35:59Speaker 2: forty two the game, and it's made a lot of changes.
- 36:03Speaker 2: They've really listened to the community over the past few years.
- 36:07Speaker 2: I want to say, this particular Bill forty two is
- 36:10Speaker 2: like five years in the making, wow, And so it
- 36:14Speaker 2: changed a lot of stuff. And the game is also
- 36:18Speaker 2: very very friendly to motyrs, so people can go in
- 36:22Speaker 2: and create their own mods for the game, like better
- 36:24Speaker 2: inventory management or maybe a texture update pack or something
- 36:30Speaker 2: like that. But it is a really cool game. And
- 36:33Speaker 2: what I also like about it is when your character
- 36:36Speaker 2: inevitably dies to the zombies, you can still continue playing
- 36:41Speaker 2: in that world with a fresh character. So if you
- 36:45Speaker 2: happen to remember where all of your loot from your
- 36:48Speaker 2: previous character was stored, you can take your new character
- 36:52Speaker 2: and run to that location and bam, now you've just
- 36:55Speaker 2: got all this loot. So you can just kind of
- 36:58Speaker 2: keep building upon what your you know, Zombie Apocalypse survivor
- 37:03Speaker 2: ancestors have built for you and left for you, which
- 37:07Speaker 2: is actually really really cool. Which platform are you playing
- 37:09Speaker 2: it on. It's on PC, It's on Steam on Steam,
- 37:13Speaker 2: and I want to say it's probably I think it's
- 37:15Speaker 2: like twenty bucks maybe maybe thirty dollars. I don't remember exactly. Actually, yeah,
- 37:20Speaker 2: twenty bucks. Twenty bucks.
- 37:21Speaker 1: Somebody asked to buy the game, asked me the other
- 37:23Speaker 1: day because there was a story this week that Netflix
- 37:26Speaker 1: is going to raise its price again, we're seeing more
- 37:29Speaker 1: and more of the streamers saying, you know, we got
- 37:31Speaker 1: we got to compete. We're paying more money for the
- 37:33Speaker 1: content that you know, we're putting out there for you.
- 37:36Speaker 2: If that's the case, they asked me.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Has Steam increased in price or value in the last
- 37:43Speaker 1: couple of years that to the point where it's also
- 37:46Speaker 1: we're going to see that eventually happening.
- 37:49Speaker 2: I don't think so. I mean a Steam has always
- 37:51Speaker 2: been so still, He's been reachable, hasn't it. Yeah, They've
- 37:54Speaker 2: never really raised their prices. And in fact, I mean
- 37:57Speaker 2: the Steam is very well known for having you know,
- 37:59Speaker 2: Steam quarterly, Yeah, quarterly Steam sales. You got the winter sale,
- 38:03Speaker 2: you've got the summer sale, and then you've got these smaller, uh,
- 38:07Speaker 2: spring and fall sales. But I think the community sets
- 38:11Speaker 2: the price for Steam because Steam is very reliant upon
- 38:15Speaker 2: its users and they will not pay a certain amount
- 38:19Speaker 2: of money. So like the community really sets the tone.
- 38:22Speaker 2: If the community says, yeah, this games were twenty bucks.
- 38:25Speaker 2: Well that's what's gonna be two bucks. What what do
- 38:28Speaker 2: you think is more value? Game Pass or Steam? It's
- 38:31Speaker 2: hard to say yeah, because.
- 38:33Speaker 3: I say because because right, Steam is a PC Mac only,
- 38:40Speaker 3: it's not console. Well they have their own handheld console
- 38:43Speaker 3: Steam Deck.
- 38:43Speaker 2: But sure, but also you don't get anything with Steam.
- 38:48Speaker 2: Like you can download Steam for free and have Steam.
- 38:52Speaker 2: You don't get anything with it, right, you have to
- 38:54Speaker 2: buy those games. Whereas game Pass, like Sean was about
- 38:57Speaker 2: to say, I'm sorry, Sean, go ahead.
- 38:59Speaker 3: No, you're gonna be like the game passes. It includes
- 39:01Speaker 3: a subscription to a library of content that Microsoft says,
- 39:06Speaker 3: here's what you get with your subscription. Right now, they can,
- 39:09Speaker 3: like any other subscription on the internet, they can yank
- 39:12Speaker 3: stuff out at a moment's notice and say, nah, you
- 39:14Speaker 3: don't get fours of five anymore, get a different version. Now.
- 39:20Speaker 2: That is true though with the rising and prices, because
- 39:23Speaker 2: Xbox game Pass did raise their prices, and so that's
- 39:27Speaker 2: why I was at last, I want to say his
- 39:29Speaker 2: last October. September October, there was a flash sale on Woot,
- 39:34Speaker 2: which is like an Amazon subsidiary, and I bought three
- 39:39Speaker 2: years of Game Pass Ultimate for not only myself but
- 39:44Speaker 2: also for Eric. So I draw it like I think
- 39:47Speaker 2: it was like five hundred and fifty dollars. But now
- 39:50Speaker 2: we have Xbox game Pass paid up for the both
- 39:53Speaker 2: of us until like twenty twenty seven or something like that.
- 39:56Speaker 1: So if they did any price increases, you're you're safe,
- 39:59Speaker 1: You're good.
- 40:00Speaker 2: Affect me, yeah, because we've already paid for our subscription.
- 40:04Speaker 2: But yeah, so like Xbox game Pass, they will they will,
- 40:06Speaker 2: uh potentially raise the prices on it. But Steam, it's
- 40:11Speaker 2: the prices are are unique to the game. I mean
- 40:14Speaker 2: some games are a dollar ninety nine, some games are
- 40:17Speaker 2: free to play, some games are fifty nine to ninety nine.
- 40:19Speaker 1: All right, we're gonna tell you another quick break. We come
- 40:21Speaker 1: back with more of tech Talk Radio. I'm Andy Taylor, I'm.
- 40:24Speaker 2: Sean de Weird, and I'm Justin. Let me find us
- 40:26Speaker 2: on Facebook at Facebook dot com. Forwarde last tech Talkers.
- 40:29Speaker 2: We'll be right back now back to tech Talk Radio.
- 40:32Speaker 3: Over this past weekend, I was able to get some
- 40:34Speaker 3: time off and I went up to main laws and
- 40:37Speaker 3: they were like, help, help, help, we have an ancient laptop. Oh,
- 40:41Speaker 3: they got freaked out. When it popped up and said
- 40:44Speaker 3: coming soon in October, Windows is no longer going to
- 40:47Speaker 3: be supported, and they they were freaking out. Yeah, they went,
- 40:51Speaker 3: they went, they went to best Buy and they're like
- 40:53Speaker 3: they they they were being told, like, you have to
- 40:55Speaker 3: buy a new computer right now. Yeah, you're not gonna
- 40:57Speaker 3: have support. And I was like, don't do that. Don't
- 40:59Speaker 3: go to Besty and tell them.
- 41:00Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 41:01Speaker 3: I sat with my father in law and we looked
- 41:04Speaker 3: at a price range that they wanted, and we came
- 41:06Speaker 3: up with a plan and I texted you guys yesterday
- 41:09Speaker 3: and Matt got back to me and kind of gave
- 41:11Speaker 3: me some ideas, and I ended up getting them a
- 41:14Speaker 3: Lenovo think bad.
- 41:15Speaker 1: I love Lenovo's, They're good. He was originally mentioning surface
- 41:20Speaker 1: and I know, justin you've had experience with the surface too.
- 41:22Speaker 2: Sure the surface, though, you know, I was a little
- 41:25Speaker 2: bit surprised. And Matt's, you know, to mention the surface
- 41:27Speaker 2: because the surface is way more expensive than five to
- 41:30Speaker 2: eight hundred dollars, right.
- 41:32Speaker 3: That's what I've seen. You can get some in that
- 41:34Speaker 3: price range, but they're pretty weak. Yeah, and they're older generations.
- 41:38Speaker 3: But you know, we ended up looking at Okay, what
- 41:41Speaker 3: what did they want? Right? What specks did they want? Well,
- 41:43Speaker 3: they wanted something that they're not gonna have to buy
- 41:46Speaker 3: another computer, right, they want something that's going to last
- 41:48Speaker 3: four to five years, five to six years. They're gonna
- 41:51Speaker 3: have to buy another computer down the road anyways.
- 41:52Speaker 2: But I mean for that price range five to five
- 41:55Speaker 2: to eight hundred dollars and they want to last five years. Yeah,
- 41:57Speaker 2: good luck. Yeah.
- 41:58Speaker 3: Yeah. So we ended up getting ended up getting the
- 42:01Speaker 3: think Pad T sixteen Generation two, which runs an I
- 42:05Speaker 3: seven thirteenth gen sixteen gigs of RAM one Teraby solid
- 42:09Speaker 3: state built Chipset graphics, Windows eleven Pro with Wi Fi
- 42:13Speaker 3: six and A sixteen is displayed. It's gonna be right
- 42:19Speaker 3: in their wheelhouse, you know. I don't know, like I
- 42:22Speaker 3: showed them the layout, because you know, the think Pad
- 42:25Speaker 3: has a very unique design where the buttons are on
- 42:29Speaker 3: the top of the track pad and you can use
- 42:31Speaker 3: the little red dot in the middle and use your
- 42:32Speaker 3: thumb and stuff. But they're primarily a Bluetooth mouse user,
- 42:37Speaker 3: so it's mostly gonna sit on there there more often
- 42:40Speaker 3: than not going to type on it or not going
- 42:42Speaker 3: to use them onboard mouse and use the wireless mouse.
- 42:47Speaker 3: So I think this is gonna be okay. It's a
- 42:49Speaker 3: slimmer profile than their older computer, it's less bulky. I
- 42:53Speaker 3: think it'll it'll travel easier if they want to travel.
- 42:57Speaker 3: And I just we have Lenovo Thinks stations at work.
- 43:01Speaker 3: I've used them in the past. They're they're they're built well.
- 43:06Speaker 2: Yeah, So I like it.
- 43:09Speaker 3: I anticipate that they'll have good success with it, right,
- 43:11Speaker 3: I just I'm nervous that they're gonna get it and
- 43:13Speaker 3: they're gonna be like, this sucks. Why did you recommend that?
- 43:16Speaker 2: Now? Are they?
- 43:18Speaker 1: Did you make sure it's not Windows s right?
- 43:20Speaker 3: It is Microsoft Windows eleven pro okaycific filtered out, so
- 43:25Speaker 3: it's not some version of Windows that they're not going
- 43:27Speaker 3: to be familiar with. Yeah, yeah, right, and they definitely
- 43:29Speaker 3: said no, Max. They don't. They don't want to. They
- 43:31Speaker 3: don't want to learn the Apple environment, and.
- 43:35Speaker 1: So they'll probably okay, Yeah, I think they're gonna be okay.
- 43:38Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:39Speaker 3: I think they're going to be just blown away at
- 43:41Speaker 3: how fast it is. Yeah, because they're running an HP
- 43:44Speaker 3: from I think like twenty eleven or twenty twelve.
- 43:47Speaker 1: Are you going to do a data transfer from their
- 43:49Speaker 1: old system into the new one.
- 43:51Speaker 3: Well, that's that's I was going to bring that up right,
- 43:53Speaker 3: because what what do we do for that? Do we
- 43:55Speaker 3: just buy a portable hard drive and move files over?
- 43:58Speaker 3: I mean, or do we do a disc close and
- 44:00Speaker 3: move it up. But then you have to do the
- 44:02Speaker 3: whole upgrade. Then you're upgrading the original OS to Windows
- 44:06Speaker 3: eleven Pro. I don't want to do that. I want
- 44:08Speaker 3: to do a clean Windows eleven install for them.
- 44:10Speaker 2: Well, PC mover.
- 44:12Speaker 1: PC mover is a pretty good program for moving programs
- 44:15Speaker 1: and it will do programs and keep the newer OS.
- 44:19Speaker 1: It can be a little pricey, but I've used that before.
- 44:22Speaker 1: I use that Actually, going on to a Windows at
- 44:25Speaker 1: the time, it was a Windows ten system and we
- 44:28Speaker 1: came from Windows XP and they had certain programs that
- 44:32Speaker 1: were licensed that it was for a print shop that
- 44:34Speaker 1: they needed to keep using. But they could use it
- 44:38Speaker 1: under the Windows ten you know OS, but the problem
- 44:41Speaker 1: is getting them to install it. We were able to
- 44:44Speaker 1: move that overused PC mover and they were able to
- 44:46Speaker 1: use it, so it worked out.
- 44:48Speaker 2: It worked out really good.
- 44:50Speaker 1: Nice, that's you know, that's one of the ways to do.
- 44:52Speaker 3: Yeah, I don't think they have enough to warrant not
- 44:57Speaker 3: reinstalling things new fresh right, Yeah, I don't think you know,
- 45:01Speaker 3: they don't do their taxes on their computer. They don't
- 45:05Speaker 3: have quick books, they don't own a business, they don't
- 45:07Speaker 3: do any of that stuffy. They mostly are just gonna
- 45:09Speaker 3: want photos, music, images, documents, important that those types of things.
- 45:14Speaker 1: If that's the case, then yeah, we just do it
- 45:17Speaker 1: onto a drive. And it's good. Get them a drive
- 45:20Speaker 1: and get them as as a backup so they'll be
- 45:22Speaker 1: used to backing up.
- 45:23Speaker 3: I mean that's what I told him. I was like, look,
- 45:25Speaker 3: you know, and he was like, my father in law
- 45:28Speaker 3: has has always been very security conscious, like, oh, he's
- 45:33Speaker 3: always got to have an ANTIVIRUSS. But I was like
- 45:36Speaker 3: he's he's trying to He's like, I gotta download Viper,
- 45:38Speaker 3: I gotta get, I gotta get. I was like, no,
- 45:41Speaker 3: you can do it with just Windows Defender and malware Byes.
- 45:44Speaker 3: Did those two programs. You're going to be fine, right,
- 45:47Speaker 3: So just try to keep the bloat down on their PC. Right.
- 45:51Speaker 3: I didn't want to go with an HP or Adele
- 45:54Speaker 3: because I just know those things come with their own
- 45:56Speaker 3: built in blow where and Lenova has a little bit
- 45:58Speaker 3: of their own also, but not nearly as bad as
- 46:01Speaker 3: HPO Dell.
- 46:02Speaker 1: And you know, I just, you know, it's got to
- 46:06Speaker 1: be hard because, like I have a situation where I've
- 46:08Speaker 1: just just given a laptop to repair. The problem is
- 46:12Speaker 1: that their screen went out. It's a Dell, an older machine.
- 46:17Speaker 1: It was when it came out, it was twenty sixteen
- 46:20Speaker 1: and it was Windows ten or no Windows seven, and
- 46:24Speaker 1: they were able to upgrade it to ten.
- 46:26Speaker 2: But now the screen has gone out.
- 46:28Speaker 1: So the first thing I checked is make sure can
- 46:30Speaker 1: we run an extended screen so that HDMI port on it?
- 46:34Speaker 1: And yes, there is a screen, so I know, it's
- 46:36Speaker 1: just in the screen panel itself. And I told her,
- 46:40Speaker 1: I said, you know, at this point, we could do
- 46:43Speaker 1: the repair on it and it could be about one
- 46:45Speaker 1: hundred and thirty bucks, you know, and that's with a
- 46:48Speaker 1: discount and labor. And that's the piece to repair it.
- 46:52Speaker 1: But the problem you're running into is it's running Windows
- 46:55Speaker 1: ten in October, you know, that's when Windows ten and
- 47:00Speaker 1: earlier os is. I'm not going to be supported, I
- 47:04Speaker 1: would probably, you know, thinking she said the one reason
- 47:07Speaker 1: she is sticking with this is because it has a
- 47:10Speaker 1: DVD drive.
- 47:13Speaker 2: And I said to her.
- 47:14Speaker 1: I said, well, you could buy an external DVD drive
- 47:17Speaker 1: that will plug into say you get a new computer,
- 47:20Speaker 1: you spend four or five hundred bucks on it, and
- 47:23Speaker 1: you could plug a DVD drive in there. They don't
- 47:25Speaker 1: come with DVD drives anymore. But she said she didn't
- 47:29Speaker 1: want to go that route. She wanted to have it
- 47:31Speaker 1: as a piece of the hardware. So that's the crazy
- 47:34Speaker 1: thing is she's replacing the screen on it because of that.
- 47:38Speaker 2: And that's how people are.
- 47:39Speaker 1: And I don't know, Sean, if you ran into that
- 47:41Speaker 1: when you were telling your parents about Okay, maybe get this,
- 47:44Speaker 1: get this, get that. They want to stay with what
- 47:46Speaker 1: they're familiar with.
- 47:48Speaker 2: No.
- 47:48Speaker 3: I mean I could see that a little bit. But
- 47:52Speaker 3: I feel like, oh, the older generations getting a little
- 47:55Speaker 3: bit better about not holding on to comfort, yeah, and
- 48:00Speaker 3: getting out of their shell a little bit technology wise.
- 48:03Speaker 3: I didn't really run into that. I know that he's
- 48:07Speaker 3: adopted the no physical media aspect of Yeah, these you know,
- 48:12Speaker 3: they didn't have a lot of DVDs to begin with.
- 48:14Speaker 3: It's not something he asked like, oh, we watched a
- 48:16Speaker 3: lot of DVDs in a computer, but can you even
- 48:19Speaker 3: get a laptop with a DVD drive.
- 48:21Speaker 1: I don't think it can No, no, LG. Yeah, that
- 48:25Speaker 1: makes that external. It's only like thirty bucks. But but why,
- 48:29Speaker 1: I mean, let's let's fast the question for anybody wondering,
- 48:32Speaker 1: why don't they come with the DVD drives anymore space?
- 48:36Speaker 3: You know, a bunch of dv You know what space
- 48:38Speaker 3: a DVD drive takes up on a mother like that
- 48:40Speaker 3: could be used for cooling or storage or battery remember,
- 48:44Speaker 3: a video card memory anything. You want a smaller, thinner laptop,
- 48:49Speaker 3: get the TV drive out of there, that yanked out,
- 48:51Speaker 3: I mean, that makes it. You know, a DVD drive
- 48:53Speaker 3: is almost an inch thick in general by itself. Yep,
- 48:56Speaker 3: and it's it's you know, four and a half inches.
- 48:59Speaker 3: But you know the size of a DVD plus some
- 49:02Speaker 3: he takes up a ton of space. So and to
- 49:05Speaker 3: be honest, right, so, I'm gonna give you a fun
- 49:08Speaker 3: stat here. The university is going wireless first, meaning they're
- 49:13Speaker 3: taking all of the hard lined phones out of the university.
- 49:17Speaker 3: So I'm going kind of going analog analog technology, right
- 49:20Speaker 3: it right? How many times do you think the average
- 49:23Speaker 3: user at the university picked up their hard line phone
- 49:26Speaker 3: in a six month period?
- 49:28Speaker 2: Oh? Well, a few times a days.
- 49:31Speaker 3: Twice tweaked the average. The average across campus for all
- 49:36Speaker 3: the hard line phones for a six month period was twice.
- 49:40Speaker 2: That's it.
- 49:41Speaker 3: Wow, Wow, business, When was the last time you put
- 49:45Speaker 3: in a DVD? Ask yourself that as a serious question.
- 49:48Speaker 3: If you're looking to get a DVD player in your computer,
- 49:51Speaker 3: when was the last time you put a DVD in?
- 49:53Speaker 2: Yeah? That's true, that's true. Only even my desktop computer
- 49:58Speaker 2: here does not have a DVD anymore, or a blue.
- 50:01Speaker 3: Mine my main ring doesn't. I have a computer dedicated
- 50:04Speaker 3: to ripping DVD's.
- 50:06Speaker 2: I mean I've got an external I've got the external drive. Yep.
- 50:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I think ripping a DVD for a friend of
- 50:12Speaker 3: what he made in high school was the last time
- 50:14Speaker 3: I put a DVD in.
- 50:14Speaker 1: So we got to take another quick break. We come
- 50:16Speaker 1: back and I've got a great website for you to
- 50:18Speaker 1: check out. If you need to put a smile on
- 50:19Speaker 1: your face, we'll do that with more with tech Talk Radio.
- 50:22Speaker 2: I'm Andy Taylor, I'm Sean the Weird, and I'm justin.
- 50:24Speaker 2: Let me find us on the web the tech talk
- 50:26Speaker 2: radio dot com. We'll be right back and now fact
- 50:30Speaker 2: to tech talk Radio. So we kind of went a.
- 50:33Speaker 1: Little retro today talking about some things that were cool
- 50:36Speaker 1: at one point, some of the older games that were
- 50:38Speaker 1: out there. You know, you got an older computer, how
- 50:40Speaker 1: do you updated? How do you move from an old
- 50:42Speaker 1: computer into a brand new one. With Sean's parents, there
- 50:45Speaker 1: is a push right now for camera technology. And I
- 50:49Speaker 1: don't know if you heard about this, Sean, but you
- 50:51Speaker 1: know we have DSLRs, we have mirrorless justin you have
- 50:54Speaker 1: a great camera. You took some great shots for your birthday.
- 50:58Speaker 1: You did like a whole indoor like thing. Tell us
- 51:01Speaker 1: about this real quick.
- 51:03Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I was yesterday was my birthday and we
- 51:06Speaker 2: went indoor skydiving. It was just something. I mean, I've
- 51:09Speaker 2: I've been skydiving for real. Uh before I skydoved over
- 51:12Speaker 2: a Wahoo back in I want to say it was
- 51:14Speaker 2: twenty ten, twenty eleven something like that, right, This is
- 51:16Speaker 2: the first time doing it indoor, and I took Eric
- 51:20Speaker 2: with me. It was obviously Mysa came as well, but
- 51:22Speaker 2: she didn't want to do it. But Eric and I
- 51:25Speaker 2: we had a a ten jump package. Each jump lasts
- 51:28Speaker 2: like about a minute fifteen. It was really cool. You
- 51:31Speaker 2: you kind of just you go into this little chamber
- 51:33Speaker 2: and it's blowing air at around one hundred miles an
- 51:37Speaker 2: hour and it just lifts you off the ground and
- 51:39Speaker 2: you can just sit there and float and literally just
- 51:42Speaker 2: fly and it was really really cool. Eric absolutely loved it.
- 51:45Speaker 2: It was so funny because I thought he was gonna
- 51:47Speaker 2: chick it out. He was the first one to go.
- 51:48Speaker 2: He wanted He just he was like, no, I'm going,
- 51:50Speaker 2: and he just jumps right into it and just like
- 51:52Speaker 2: starts flying.
- 51:53Speaker 3: How would you.
- 51:53Speaker 1: Feel if he if he said, Dad, I want to
- 51:55Speaker 1: do a real jump, would you would you go?
- 51:57Speaker 2: I mean absolutely not. No. No, First off, he couldn't
- 51:59Speaker 2: even do it real jump if you wanted, Yeah, you
- 52:01Speaker 2: have to be a certain age to do that. But
- 52:03Speaker 2: but the endoor was great. We had a lot of fun.
- 52:06Speaker 2: It's cool. It really honestly did feel like it. It was.
- 52:08Speaker 2: It was a company called I Fly. I mean they're nationwide.
- 52:11Speaker 2: They have them all over the run. The one in
- 52:13Speaker 2: Vegas and yeah, they've got one in Vegas, got two
- 52:15Speaker 2: in Colorado, They've got I don't know, They're all over
- 52:18Speaker 2: the place. It was expensive, it really was. For ten jumps,
- 52:22Speaker 2: it was like five hundred dollars. Whoa wow. Yeah, Wow,
- 52:25Speaker 2: ten minutes of flying. Ten minutes of flying really for
- 52:28Speaker 2: five hundred dollars.
- 52:29Speaker 1: Man, But it's still something you experience and that's what's great.
- 52:33Speaker 1: You know, you have a camera, you take pictures, the
- 52:34Speaker 1: whole bit. But Jean, there's a story about the idea
- 52:38Speaker 1: now of the small cameras, like you know, the the
- 52:42Speaker 1: old cannons, the old pen tax cameras making a resurgence
- 52:46Speaker 1: just with the basic point, yeah and shoot camera. And
- 52:50Speaker 1: you know, I'm not talking about the camp snap, which
- 52:51Speaker 1: we thought was kind of cool.
- 52:52Speaker 2: These are digital cameras that are.
- 52:54Speaker 1: Coming back, and you're you're excited about this.
- 52:56Speaker 3: I love I love this right because I've always i
- 53:00Speaker 3: will say, one of my biggest mentors always told me
- 53:02Speaker 3: the best camera you have is the camera in your hand.
- 53:04Speaker 2: Right.
- 53:04Speaker 3: Okay, could be your phone, could be your DSLR, could anything.
- 53:08Speaker 3: But the fact that people are detaching the idea of
- 53:12Speaker 3: taking photos from your phone is this is the key
- 53:15Speaker 3: part of it, right because you are now more physically
- 53:19Speaker 3: engaged with taking the picture. It's not on your phone,
- 53:22Speaker 3: it's not attached to your phone. You are now you're
- 53:25Speaker 3: framing it up, you're taking the picture. It's living on
- 53:28Speaker 3: the camera, you're touching it, you're feeling it. You're then
- 53:32Speaker 3: having to being thoughtful about it, taking the memory card out,
- 53:35Speaker 3: putting it in your You're attaching more synapses to this picture,
- 53:40Speaker 3: which is the whole point of art. And we've talked.
- 53:43Speaker 3: I've been big on this for the longest time. There's
- 53:47Speaker 3: going to be a not even necessarily an analog revolution,
- 53:50Speaker 3: but a digital, semi non internet connected digital revolution of
- 53:55Speaker 3: people wanting to be more connected to their photos. Well,
- 53:58Speaker 3: because that, for one, it's nostalgic, right, it's it's therapeutic,
- 54:03Speaker 3: it's art. You get to be creative and you get
- 54:05Speaker 3: to be a part of that process. And I don't know,
- 54:07Speaker 3: I got really excited about it because that is something
- 54:10Speaker 3: I have spoken a lot about. Is that's why I
- 54:15Speaker 3: love taking poot, doing photography. That's why I like shooting film,
- 54:20Speaker 3: because there is there's something about it, right, grabbing onto
- 54:23Speaker 3: the film, grabbing onto the picture, you know, going over
- 54:26Speaker 3: to my poster board where I've got pictures of my
- 54:28Speaker 3: family on it and reaching up and looking at and going, oh, yeah,
- 54:31Speaker 3: that memory or that you know, that polaroid or whatever.
- 54:33Speaker 3: That's what it's all about. And that's something that this
- 54:37Speaker 3: like the current generation knows nothing about.
- 54:39Speaker 2: With that thought.
- 54:41Speaker 1: One of the images that is the overall winner of
- 54:44Speaker 1: the year of this not you this year is Nikon's
- 54:46Speaker 1: Comedy Wildlife Award.
- 54:48Speaker 2: They do this every year. You can see the picture.
- 54:51Speaker 1: At Comedy Wildlife photo dot com is a squirrel stuck
- 54:55Speaker 1: in a tree and it is a quite the picture.
- 54:59Speaker 1: There's also one of my favorite is a monkey that
- 55:01Speaker 1: it's deep in thought. But go to Comedy Wildlife photo
- 55:04Speaker 1: dot com you see all the photos are and put
- 55:05Speaker 1: a smile on your face of great thoughts though on
- 55:07Speaker 1: digital photography. That wraps up this week's Tech Talk Radio.
- 55:10Speaker 2: I'm Andy Taylor.
- 55:12Speaker 3: I'm trying to hear one more thing. DJ has some
- 55:14Speaker 3: new drounal. We'll talk about it next week. Oh yes,
- 55:17Speaker 3: I'm shying to wear.
- 55:18Speaker 2: It and I'm justin. Let me have yourselves a great week.
- 55:20Speaker 2: We'll see you next time.
