- 0:12Hello friends, it's Sean. Here it is Tuesday, It is the
- 0:1616th of April and you have tapped on play, which means here
- 0:20I am and we are going to read another chapter of God's Word.
- 0:23Hello friend, Good to have your company.
- 0:27Now, as we read, it is easy to fall into the trap of thinking
- 0:31that each chapter should have a moral.
- 0:34Each chapter should have a little message, a little take
- 0:37home point that we can put into practise and make ourselves a
- 0:41better Christian. But that is not the case.
- 0:43Each of these chapters doesn't need to stand alone because it
- 0:47sits as part of a bigger story, and not just the chapters around
- 0:51it in which it does play part of that story.
- 0:53And not just in the book in which it it exists in Second
- 0:57Samuel in today's case, but in the narrative of God interacting
- 1:01with his people. And so the temptation is to to
- 1:05look for a lesson in each of these stories.
- 1:08And that's not necessarily the intention of the writer.
- 1:11But the author of these books, inspired by the Holy Spirit, is
- 1:15capturing this enormous narrative, each story playing
- 1:21its part in the larger picture. And the larger picture has this
- 1:25powerful message that God is our king, and he is going to
- 1:30establish what his kingship looks like in this dynasty
- 1:34throughout the next number of generations.
- 1:37And it will not look pretty for much of that time.
- 1:40But God's faithfulness and generosity to his people will
- 1:43come out again and again. And as I pray, I'm not
- 1:47necessarily praying about the key message each day.
- 1:51I'm just praying about what the Holy Spirit promised me to pray
- 1:55about after reading through the chapter.
- 1:59So let us sit back in the comfort of knowing that our God
- 2:03is a very big God, much bigger than this chapter, much bigger
- 2:06than the little stories that we read.
- 2:09But he controls not just the overarching biblical narrative,
- 2:12but all time and space in his hands.
- 2:16Alright, you ready? Do you want to read the next
- 2:18chapter? I do.
- 2:19Let's read together Second Samuel, Chapter 9.
- 2:33One day, David asked. Is anyone in Saul's family still
- 2:37alive? Anyone to whom I can show
- 2:40kindness for Jonathan's sake, he summoned a man named Ziba who
- 2:45had been one of Saul's servants. Are you Ziba?
- 2:48The king asked. Yes, Sir, I am Zebra, replied
- 2:52The king then asked him, Is anyone still alive from Saul's
- 2:56family? If so, I want to show God's
- 2:59kindness to them, Ziba replied. Yes, one of Jonathan's sons is
- 3:05still alive. He is crippled in both feet.
- 3:09Where is he? The king asked in Lodebar.
- 3:13Zebra told him at the home of Machir, son of Ammiel.
- 3:18Sir David sent for him and brought him from Marquis home.
- 3:22His name was Mephibosheth. He was Jonathan's son and Saul's
- 3:27grandson. When he came to David, he bowed
- 3:30low to the ground in deep respect.
- 3:32David said. Greetings, Mephibosheth,
- 3:36Mephibosheth replied. I am your servant.
- 3:40Don't be afraid. David said.
- 3:42I intend to show kindness to you because of my promise to your
- 3:46father, Jonathan. I will give you all the property
- 3:49that once belonged to your grandfather Saul, and you will
- 3:52eat here with me at the King's table.
- 3:55Mephibosheth bowed respectfully and exclaimed.
- 3:59Who is your servant that you should show such kindness to a
- 4:03dead dog like me? Then the king summoned soul
- 4:07servant Ziba and said, I have given your master's grandson
- 4:11everything that belonged to Saul and his family.
- 4:14You and your sons and servants are to farm the land for him, to
- 4:19produce food for your master's household.
- 4:21But Mephibosheth, your master's grandson, will eat here at my
- 4:26table. Ziba had fifteen sons and 20
- 4:30servants, Ziba replied. Yes, my Lord the king, I am your
- 4:36servant, and I will do all that you have commanded.
- 4:40And from that time on, Mephibosheth ate regularly at
- 4:44David's table. Like one of the King's own sons,
- 4:48Mephibosheth had a young son named Micah.
- 4:51From then on, all the members of Zebra's household were
- 4:55Mephibosheth servants, and Mephibosheth, who was crippled
- 5:00in both feet, lived in Jerusalem and ate regularly at the King's
- 5:04table. Lord, as we read this chapter,
- 5:18we are struck by all the inheritance of the old King's
- 5:22soul being gifted back to his grandson.
- 5:27Such lavish provisions, such wealth that he had no idea was
- 5:31coming his way. And that is just like us, Lord,
- 5:35as you adopt us into your family, as you take us under
- 5:40your wing, and you care for us, and you give us an inheritance
- 5:44that we have not earned, that we did not anticipate.
- 5:48But here we are, given this eternal gift of a home with you,
- 5:55of forgiveness, of sanctification, of the
- 5:59invitation to come before your holy throne and to be loved, to
- 6:04be loved, to be loved. And we love you back, and we
- 6:10thank you. And it's with hearts full of
- 6:12gratitude that we pray all these things in the name of Jesus, oh
- 6:17man.
