- 0:00Welcome to Tabernacle Talk. Tabernacle Talk is a Bible study
- 0:03podcast brought from Tabernacle Baptist Church in Essex, MD.
- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in the last
- 0:20chapter. I think this might be the last
- 0:23narrative chapter in the book of Isaiah.
- 0:28Let me take a quick peek. Also, we are well past now more
- 0:34than halfway done with the book of Isaiah.
- 0:38Isaiah has been called kind of like the Bible in miniature
- 0:43because it has 66 books, just like in our Protestant numbering
- 0:50of Scripture, we have 66 books, 39 books in the Old Testament
- 0:55and 27 books in the New Testament.
- 0:59And so today's episode, we are in Isaiah 39.
- 1:03And so if you will, we only have 27 more chapters to go that we
- 1:09are well past the halfway point. And so today is the last
- 1:12narrative chapter that we have in Isaiah.
- 1:15After this, it's going to be a lot of poetry.
- 1:18So think a lot along the lines of Psalms is the, if you will,
- 1:25the vibe that we get from most of the other chapters.
- 1:29There will also be some chapters that involve some denunciations
- 1:35and prophecies against various sins and sinful rulers.
- 1:41There's a lot of chapters about the suffering servant of Isaiah,
- 1:48and that is talking specifically prophesying about Jesus and what
- 1:53he would go through on behalf of Israel and what he would do for
- 2:00Israel. So the most famous chapter of
- 2:02which is Isaiah 53, which talks in detail about the suffering
- 2:07that Jesus would go through on the cross and in his beatings
- 2:12and his death. And so this next portion of
- 2:16Isaiah that we're going to go through in chapters 40 through
- 2:1966 is super, super important and would have given Israel the
- 2:24blueprint looking forward about 700 years or so to when Jesus
- 2:31would come and what they should anticipate the role of the
- 2:36Messiah being. Many of them, most of them did
- 2:41not understand what Jesus had come to do.
- 2:45But after Jesus's death and resurrection, the apostles
- 2:49solidly understood what had taken place, even as Jesus
- 2:54explained some of that to them. So that's all what's to come.
- 2:58Today we're jumping back into the same general story that we
- 3:03heard last episode. King Hezekiah of the southern
- 3:07Kingdom of Judah had been told by God that he was going to die.
- 3:11Hezekiah prayed. He asked the Lord like, hey,
- 3:13could I have some more time? God said, all right, I will add
- 3:1715 more years to your life now. That was wonderful.
- 3:21He prayed. God answered.
- 3:22God answered. The prayer in the way that
- 3:24Hezekiah wanted doesn't always happen that way.
- 3:27And so he was excited for that, but Hezekiah did something that
- 3:32he should not have done. And we're going to read that in
- 3:35today's chapter. This chapter is only 8 verses,
- 3:40but it has some, I think, important lessons for us in our
- 3:45day-to-day walk in life. Chapter 39 and verse #1 At that
- 3:51time, after Hezekiah's healing, Meridoc Baladan, son of Baladan,
- 3:56king of Babylon, sent letters and a gift to Hezekiah since he
- 4:01heard that he had been sick and had recovered.
- 4:04So, you know, this is kind of nice.
- 4:06Nearby king goes, hey, I'm I'm happy you're feeling better.
- 4:10He sends letters and a gift. Verse #2 Hezekiah was pleased
- 4:15with the letters, and he showed the envoys his treasure house,
- 4:20the silver, the gold, the spices, and the precious oil,
- 4:25and all his Armory and everything that was found in his
- 4:28treasuries. There was nothing in his palace
- 4:31and in all his realm that Hezekiah did not show them.
- 4:36OK, that one's just stated. You might already have an idea
- 4:42of what Hezekiah's blunder was. Let's continue reading.
- 4:46Verse #3 Then the prophet Isaiah came to King Hezekiah and asked
- 4:49him, what did these men say and where did they come to you from?
- 4:53Hezekiah replied, they they came to me from a distant country,
- 4:56from Babylon, which again, Assyria is just, if I'm
- 5:02remembering correctly, my geography is just a little ways
- 5:06away from Babylon, like there's not that much of a difference.
- 5:11And so I wouldn't even, especially with everything that
- 5:14had happened to the northern Kingdom of Israel, I would not
- 5:17have been the one to say, oh, yeah, distant country.
- 5:20Babylon, a distant country to me is, oh, you know, China, Japan,
- 5:25you know, over on the other side of the world, Greece, like those
- 5:28are distant countries. Babylon still feels a little too
- 5:32close to home. Verse #4 Isaiah asked.
- 5:36What have they seen in your palace?
- 5:39Hezekiah answered, They've seen everything in my palace.
- 5:42There isn't anything in my treasuries that I didn't show
- 5:44them. Then Isaiah said to Hezekiah,
- 5:48Hear the word of Yahweh of heaven's armies.
- 5:51Look, the days are coming when everything in your palace and
- 5:55all that your predecessors have stored up until today will be
- 5:58carried off to Babylon. Nothing will be left, says
- 6:01Yahweh. Some of your descendants who
- 6:04come from you, whom you father, will be taken away, and they
- 6:08will become eunuchs in the palace of the king of Babylon.
- 6:12Then Hezekiah said to Isaiah, the word of Yahweh that you have
- 6:15spoken is good, for he thought there will be peace and security
- 6:20during my lifetime. He's thinking, all right, well,
- 6:23there's going to be bad that is coming, but it's not in my
- 6:26lifetime, so I don't have to deal with it.
- 6:28So yeah, that's great. Isaiah here doesn't say that I
- 6:34will become a eunuch in the palace of the king of Babylon.
- 6:37He goes, I'm fine. It doesn't matter what happens
- 6:40to future generations so long as I am good.
- 6:47Can I challenge you? You and your generation are not
- 6:54all that matters. What you say and do will make an
- 7:00impact that will far outlive you, and you should have a
- 7:05desire that the impact that you leave will be for the better,
- 7:10for the good, and not for the worse.
- 7:14On the national scale. This is something that people
- 7:17have warned about for a long time, that even the consistent
- 7:24hoarding of wealth in some of the upper age groups of our
- 7:31society, that it's not being passed down generationally.
- 7:36And so there's going to come a time of incredible financial
- 7:41upheaval even in the next say 15 to 15 to 35 years.
- 7:48And I'm certain that there's some people that might be
- 7:51watching this that are like, it'll happen sooner than that.
- 7:54And I, I don't doubt some of that as well that can happen
- 7:59within even our, our debts that we're amassing as a nation.
- 8:05And there's continued to be no cessation of consistent spending
- 8:12without being accountable to what we're spending, a bad
- 8:17budgeting, excessive spending that's not within, you know, the
- 8:24the agreed upon budget that we even are supposed to have as a
- 8:28country. And so we are saddling future
- 8:32generations with incredible debt in ways that could really
- 8:37destroy our nation in coming days.
- 8:40None of you, I don't believe watching this, are individually
- 8:44responsible for that. You are responsible for the way
- 8:47that you talk to your kids and your grandkids, to those younger
- 8:52than you at your church, the way that you care about those within
- 8:57your church. Just because you might be
- 8:59getting up older in years does not mean that you are exempt
- 9:03from service in the church now. That service might not look like
- 9:07you. You, you might be, you know, 93
- 9:10years old. You might not be one that God
- 9:13has serving in nursery during this time.
- 9:15That's totally OK. But you better be praying for
- 9:19your brothers and sisters in the Lord.
- 9:21You better be an encouragement in whatever time that the Lord
- 9:25gives you that when you are at church, you're building someone
- 9:29else up with your words that you are caring for them.
- 9:32Don't say well, I did my time and now you know everyone else
- 9:38can just deal and so it it doesn't matter.
- 9:40No you until your dying breath invest into the coming
- 9:45generations. Now, that might be if you are
- 9:4790, that someone in their 60s and 70s is some of the next
- 9:51generation that you're pouring into and that you're caring for
- 9:54as well as you can care for those that are, you know, in
- 9:57their teens or those that are in their 20s like myself.
- 10:01You can invest in the coming generations.
- 10:05Have a love that you want other people to know, how to share the
- 10:11gospel, how to live well in their marriages, how to be a
- 10:18diligent and a hard worker, how to give to the Lord's work.
- 10:23Wherever the Lord has placed you, you can invest in the next
- 10:27generation and make their future better.
- 10:32I'd even encourage you. I have no idea who all watches
- 10:36Tabernacle talk, but if you are anywhere near kind of the end
- 10:43years of your life, I'd encourage you to talk with a tax
- 10:46professional and see if there's a way for you to give to the
- 10:51Lord's work, whether here at Tabernacle or wherever your
- 10:55local church is, that when you pass that God's work is
- 11:00continuing to be blessed and taken care of even through your
- 11:04financial generosity. You know, Uncle Sam can get a
- 11:08bunch of it where you might be able to give it to the good Lord
- 11:12and to His work. I am not a tax expert.
- 11:16Don't talk to me anything that you would do in relation to
- 11:19Tabernacle that is between you and God.
- 11:22No, no assumptions or pushes from my end.
- 11:26But I do want to encourage you be thinking about the future
- 11:30here. Hezekiah goes, well, stuff is
- 11:32going to be fine during my life. So it doesn't matter that I have
- 11:36done these incredibly destructive things for my, you
- 11:41know, kids or grandkids and the future of this Kingdom of Judah.
- 11:45Like I really messed up the proper response for Hezekiah
- 11:50here would be God, I am so sorry.
- 11:52Like I was prideful. I was wrong and so would you
- 11:56forgive me. You know, even praying he he
- 11:59prayed the time before. Don't kill me.
- 12:02I feel like he could also have prayed here.
- 12:05God, don't bring onto my kids or my grandkids punishment for my
- 12:13pride right now. Like punish me, don't punish
- 12:16them for it. That's not what he prays here
- 12:19and here. It's just very self-centered in
- 12:22his reaction. Don't be that.
- 12:25I also want to mention as well, the kind of source of this
- 12:29trouble that he brings on the subsequent generation is because
- 12:32of his pride that he wants to show off and showboat to the
- 12:40messengers from Babylon to say, look how rich I am, look how
- 12:45incredible my house is. And the many of us are not
- 12:52rulers over a country that our pride can literally mean the end
- 12:57of our country. All of us can be unduly proud
- 13:02and pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit
- 13:07before a fall is what Solomon would tell us in Proverbs.
- 13:11And so I want to encourage you, don't have a proud heart.
- 13:14Don't be boastful in your possessions in your in your
- 13:19home. Don't be boastful of your
- 13:24accomplishments and all the great things, quote UN quote you
- 13:28have done. Recognize that everything you
- 13:31have comes from God. So you can use your stuff, you
- 13:34can use your home, you can use your wisdom or accomplishments
- 13:39to bless other people and to help equip them for what God
- 13:44would have. But don't live your life just
- 13:47being a self-centered, braggadocious person here.
- 13:52That led to it was one of many things that led to the downfall
- 13:56of Judah, but God highlights it both here and in.
- 14:00I forget if it's Second Kings or Second Chronicles, but God
- 14:04highlights it multiple times as one of the reasons for the
- 14:07downfall of Judah. It's one of the most human
- 14:10aspects that Babylon knew. There are incredible riches to
- 14:14be had here, and so I want to challenge you.
- 14:17Don't be prideful, be generous. A proud person says.
- 14:23Look at all of this stuff. Generosity says, how can I use
- 14:27God's stuff that I currently manage to bless someone else?
- 14:33If you have a nice home, wonderful.
- 14:35Don't just have people over that can marvel at your greatness.
- 14:39Have people over to be able to spend time with them, to
- 14:43disciple them, to invest in them, to fellowship with them,
- 14:46to pray with them. Do that if you have a nice home,
- 14:50that is something that you should be doing.
- 14:54If you have a lot of money, use your money to help those who
- 15:01don't have many possessions. Help people out within your
- 15:04church that need it. Give to the Lord's work so that
- 15:08God's so that your local church, wherever it is, can be further
- 15:13blessed. If you have a nice vehicle, use
- 15:17it to give rides to maybe older individuals that need to get to
- 15:22a doctor's appointment or need to get to the store or maybe
- 15:26need to visit a family member. Those would all be good ways to
- 15:30use your possessions. Don't just brag on what you
- 15:33have. Use what you have in order to
- 15:36bless others. And that would even fall in line
- 15:40with what we read several months back in First Timothy 6 of
- 15:44instruct those who are rich in this world to be rich in good
- 15:47deeds and may we pursue that with our life.
- 15:51This ends the narrative portion of Isaiah chapters 36 through
- 15:5639. Some good that happens in
- 15:59Hezekiah's life. He prays to the Lord, he lays it
- 16:01out. He says God, you're the only one
- 16:03that can help. God answers his prayers, but it
- 16:07doesn't mean that Hezekiah was perfect.
- 16:09And there were times where his pride and his self centeredness
- 16:13led to the destruction of generations.
- 16:15And so may we have a heart to be generous, to be wise, to be
- 16:19humble, not to be prideful or braggadocious.
