- 0:07The Brooklyn Dodgers face the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium for Game 1 of the 1949 World Series on October 5th.
- 0:14This is the mutual radio broadcast of Game 1 featuring announcers Mel Allen and Red Barber.
- 0:20We wish to thank the following sponsors who are relinquishing their broadcast periods today in order that we may bring you the World Series.
- 0:26The makers of La Rosa Macaroni, spaghetti and egg noodles, sponsors of the La Rosa Hollywood Theatre of Stars,
- 0:32The makers of Philip Marr cigarettes and Alka Scheltzer, co-sponsors of Queen for a Day.
- 0:38Time permitting, Queen for a Day will be presented following the game.
- 0:42We take you now to Yankee Stadium.
- 0:45Look sharp, feel sharp, be sharp. Use Gillette Blue Glades with the sharpest edges ever home.
- 0:54Gillette Cavalcade of sports is on the air. Good afternoon baseball fans everywhere.
- 1:00This is Red Barber with Mel Allen at Yankee Stadium in New York greeting you for the Gillette Safety Razor Company
- 1:07as the Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Yankees get set for the opening game of the 1949 World Series.
- 1:13This is the 11th consecutive year that baseball's championship classic is being aired throughout the world.
- 1:19By way of Gillette microphones. Yes, and because so many sports fans are also Gillette fans,
- 1:25we broadcast and telecast major boxing, racing and football events as they occur throughout the calendar.
- 1:31So folks, remember, for the tops in sports, tune in Gillette's Cavalcade of sports three years around.
- 1:38The first question that you want to know is about the weather, and the weather is fine.
- 1:43It scared everybody in New York to death this morning when when dawn came,
- 1:47it came through gray clouds and it was raining, but the rain stopped about 830 to 9 o'clock.
- 1:52The outfield is going to be a little bit treacherous for any outfielder who has to cut sharply one way or the other.
- 1:58The infield, which of course was covered, is in perfect condition.
- 2:03Now the second question that you'd like to know, the starting pitcher for the Dodgers.
- 2:07Bert Schotten did not announce him until his pregame clubhouse meeting.
- 2:11He is Big Don Newcomb, 6'5, 230 pounds, finishing his rookie year.
- 2:17In fact, he was not even with the Dodgers the first month of the pennant campaign, came on to win 17 ballgames.
- 2:22The starting pitcher for the Yankees is the stout-armed right-hander, Ali Reynolds, who has known for two days that he was going to be the starter.
- 2:30In fact, on the pre-World Series broadcast from Commissioner Chandler Sweet last evening,
- 2:36he compared Ali Reynolds and he was speaking then of the fact that he knew he was going to be the starting pitcher,
- 2:41said he was going to sleep well, and that the butterflies wouldn't start until about noon today.
- 2:45And as far as butterflies, there are butterflies everywhere, as far as these athletes are concerned.
- 2:50This is it. And I think the tremendous tensions of the two pennant races,
- 2:55each coming down to the very last thing late Sunday afternoon, has added to the number of butterflies that will beset these ballplayers.
- 3:03But they are great. The Yankees won in a tremendous finish in the American League.
- 3:07The Dodgers won in a tremendous finish and one inning, you might say, in the National League.
- 3:12So adjectives can just be put in the attic. This is it.
- 3:16Now they are going to put their knucks on the line and it's going to be settled right here and now.
- 3:23In fact, in about 13 fateful moments, this ballgame will be on the way.
- 3:27So the two right-handers continue throwing. Reynolds, who won 17 and lost 6.
- 3:32It might be significant to point out he pitched 4 complete games.
- 3:36Newcomb has won 17 ballgames for Brooklyn in the pennant race, has lost 8.
- 3:42And as far as his complete games go, 19. He's big and strong.
- 3:47And I think that is one reason that Manager Schotton wished him to start.
- 3:51He wanted Newcomb to start so that he can do as much work as possible.
- 3:55Now you want the batting orders. For the visiting Dodgers, captain and shortstop Pee Wee Reese will lead off.
- 4:01And Johnny Jorgensen, the third baseman, is hitting number 2.
- 4:07Johnny Jorgensen. Duke Snyder is in center field and is batting third.
- 4:13Snyder, who drove in Brooklyn's pennant winning run in the 10th inning at Philadelphia Sunday.
- 4:18Jackie Robinson won the batting championship for the National League with 3 points.
- 4:22Robinson at second base. He was in the series in 47, you'll recall.
- 4:26Gene Harmanski is in left field. Harmanski in left for Brooklyn.
- 4:33Carl Forello, who is Brooklyn's casualty. Forello in right field.
- 4:38He has a groin injury. Right side of his groin. It's quite painful.
- 4:42But the Brooklyn trainer, Doc Wendler, put a whole roll of tape on him and an elastic bandage.
- 4:47And Forello is going to play. Hodges at first base.
- 4:53In other words, this is the regular Brooklyn batting order that goes against an opposing starting right hand pitcher.
- 4:58Campanella is catching and is hitting eighth. And the pitcher is rookie Don Newcomb.
- 5:05Now for Casey Stengel and his Yankees. And it's an odd fact that Stengel played in a World Series for the Dodgers.
- 5:12Several, in fact. And more than that, Stengel in 1934 and 35 managed at Brooklyn before he went to the Boston Braves.
- 5:20Now the announcement that Miss Lucy Monroe will sing the national anthem.
- 6:51Miss Lucy Monroe, accompanied by Garland Barter's orchestra, just performed the national anthem.
- 6:57Now we'll go down to batting orders for the Yankees.
- 6:59The Six Umpires, Reese, the Brooklyn team captain, manager Casey Stengel, who takes his own batting order up for the Yankees.
- 7:06Arkham, Forell, and Home Plate. The groundkeepers here at the stadium are still polishing off the infield.
- 7:11So it's just a quiet scene at the moment. The sun shining and the big crowd pouring in.
- 7:15For the Yankees, Phil Rizzuto, who's had a tremendous year at shortstop, leads off.
- 7:20Little Scooter, Rizzuto. Tommy Henrik, all reliable.
- 7:25He told us in the dugout an hour ago that his back feels fine. It is not taped. He is not wearing a corset.
- 7:30In other words, he said, that slender figure is all mine.
- 7:33Tommy Henrik, at first base. He's been a very valuable team player for the Yankees in the outfield or the infield, wherever they've needed him.
- 7:41Yogi Barra, whose left arm is still tender. He has to be very careful.
- 7:46He says sometimes if he hits a ball wrong off the bat, it stings his hand and hurts him very much.
- 7:51Yogi Barra is catching. The great Joe DiMaggio, 12 pounds lighter for that recent bout with a virus pneumonia.
- 7:59Joe DiMaggio, who returned to get an action just in time those two games with the Red Sox Saturday and Sunday.
- 8:05DiMaggio in center field. Johnny Lindell in left. Lindell, who hit the winning run Saturday afternoon to break the 4-4 tie with the Red Sox.
- 8:15Lindell in left. Billy Johnson, who has been playing good ball lately, is at third base.
- 8:20Cliff Mapes, the rookie who's made the grade splendidly in right field. M-A-P-E-S Mapes.
- 8:25Jerry Coleman, another rookie who came through for Stengel with his multitudinous shifts.
- 8:29Demanded by, we'll check it with Mel in just a moment, I think there are about 80 real casualties that the Yankees had in the way of injuries.
- 8:37Mel, how many casualties did you count up this year with the Yankees in the front of the race?
- 8:41We stopped at 70, Ryan.
- 8:43All right, now we told you Coleman at second base, Ali Reynolds is the pitcher, and the umpires.
- 8:49Carol Hubbard, one of the great athletes on the American scene. Oh, what a football player he was.
- 8:55Big Carol Hubbard will be back at the plate. John Beanes-Ridden will be at first base for the National League.
- 9:02Art Passerella of the American League, Passerella at second base.
- 9:07Lou Georda of the National League will be at third.
- 9:10In the left field corner, as an alternate umpire, will be Ed Hurley of the American League.
- 9:14And in the right field corner, alternate umpire George Barr of the National League.
- 9:18Folks, now and then, something that doesn't happen is news.
- 9:22For instance, thanks to the cooperation of campers, hunters, tourists, and others who visit our Woodland areas,
- 9:2816,000 forest fires didn't happen in 1948.
- 9:32But before we start cheering, it's also true that forest fires devastated 30 million acres last year.
- 9:38That's an area as large as New York State.
- 9:40Remember, only you can prevent forest fires, so don't be careless.
- 9:45The umpires are going out to take their six positions,
- 9:49and I noticed that Hurley is going in the right field corner, Barr in the left field corner, to make that change for you.
- 9:55And now while we have the opportunity, we'll pause for station identification.
- 9:59This is the Mutual Broadcasting System.
- 10:02WOR and WORFM, your World Series stations in New York.
- 10:08The Yankees have started out to take their nine defensive posts here at Yankee Stadium.
- 10:14A little cloudishness has come, but there's still plenty of sunlight.
- 10:18Jake Pitler is going down to coach his first for the Dodgers.
- 10:20Milton Stocks to coach his third.
- 10:22And now coming over here to the Gillette microphone, one of the great broadcasters.
- 10:28It's a real privilege to be with him again.
- 10:31His broadcasting this year as the Yankees go up to their pennant was equally in tune with the success of the New York Club.
- 10:37Mel Allen.
- 10:38Hello there, everybody. Thank you very much, Red Barber.
- 10:41And it's always a privilege and a real pleasure to be able to associate with you on these World Series broadcasts.
- 10:47I shall never forget the 1947 when you and I went to those seven games and had so much fun and excitement.
- 10:53This program comes to you by authority of the Commissioner of Baseball.
- 10:56It's intended only for the private use of our audience.
- 10:59Any publication or reproduction of this program and commercial use of the program is prohibited.
- 11:06And so we're all set for the first game of the World Series.
- 11:10Allie Reynolds, who won 17 games and lost six for the Yankees in the regular season,
- 11:15and whose previous World Series experience consists of a victory over the Dodgers in 1947.
- 11:21He worked in two games, a total of 11 in the third innings,
- 11:25beating the Dodgers in the second game of the 47 World Series here at the stadium.
- 11:31And he's opening for New York today.
- 11:33Vic Rasci, generally considered the Yankees' ace, went Sunday against the Red Sox in that thrilling finale.
- 11:40And thus, of course, Casey Stengel decided to rest him a little longer
- 11:44and start instead Allie Reynolds.
- 11:46Allie has a good fastball, a good curve, and has been troubled on occasion by his control.
- 11:53When Allie's control is good, he's rough to hit.
- 11:57If his control is off, then of course he'll get into trouble.
- 12:00Now the first ball was tossed out by Bruce Howard, a nine-year-old youngster of Astoria, Long Island.
- 12:09He's the guest of baseball commissioner A.B. Chandler.
- 12:11He was chosen to represent thousands assisted during this year's record infantile paralysis epidemic.
- 12:16And now the first pitcher of the ball game, the Pee Wee Reese,
- 12:18right-hand batter is in there for a called strike, and we're underway in the 1949 World Series.
- 12:25Pee Wee, right-hand batter, who hit.277 in the regular season,
- 12:29captain of the Dodgers, good money player, Johnson in close at third in the vent of the bunt,
- 12:33The pitch is a curve over for called strike two.
- 12:37The outfield for Reese, slightly toward left and center left,
- 12:40I guess in general they're shading him toward left, although Cliff Mapes is looking for Pee Wee,
- 12:45maybe hit over toward right a bit.
- 12:47Tommy Henrik is deep wide of first.
- 12:49Jerry Coleman, three strikes to the right of second.
- 12:51Johnson is a little deeper now at third with two strikes on Reese.
- 12:54The pitch, just outside for a ball, it's an overhand delivery.
- 12:59Allie had come inside arm with his first two pitches.
- 13:01It's a one-two count now on Pee Wee Reese.
- 13:04Johnny Jorgensen on deck with Duke Snyder to follow.
- 13:10Reynolds getting a sign from Yogi Berra, taking a little time, and Reese steps out.
- 13:17A little overcast at the moment, Sun's playing hide and seek, a little muggy.
- 13:25Now Reynolds is ready, here's the one-two pitch to Reese, and it is swung on.
- 13:28A ground ball hit to Henrik, he's up with it, out runs, Reese to the bag, and there's one away.
- 13:33Pee Wee Reese grounding out, Henrik unassisted, and with one down, up comes Spider Jorgensen,
- 13:40a left-hand hitter, batted 269 on the regular season, and I believe, Red,
- 13:48had Billy Cox not been injured, he probably would have been the starting third baseman for the Dodgers, would he?
- 13:56He's been hurt, of course, since Labor Day.
- 13:59So Spider Jorgensen is in there, he's had previous World Series experience.
- 14:05Outfield, playing him to pull, toward right field, here's the pitch, strike one, it's called,
- 14:10a fast ball in there around the knees, on deck is Duke Snyder, top half of the first inning, one out, nobody on.
- 14:18Bill Rosuto is about one stride to the left of second base in a step, Johnson at third is in very close,
- 14:24about five feet off the bag.
- 14:26Now Reynolds delivery on its way, Jorgensen swings and lifts the drive to left center field,
- 14:29Lindell racing over into the gap, going back and it's over his head and moving by,
- 14:33The man just backing up and Jorgensen's racing his second, going to try for three,
- 14:37and then he holds up quickly as the free-lay comes into Rosuto, it's a double for Jorgensen in the left center.
- 14:49Johnny Jorgensen's drive in the left center was overcharged by Johnny Lindell,
- 14:54and then as he attempted to retrace his steps and backpedal, it was a little bit too late,
- 14:59and Joe DiMaggio backed up, kept the ball from going further, and it's a double for Spiner Jorgensen.
- 15:06That brings to the plate, Duke Snyder, long ball hitter for the Dodgers,
- 15:14Duke batting at 292 with 89 RBIs on the season, and 23 home runs.
- 15:23That's a two-base hit for Johnny Jorgensen.
- 15:27Reynolds looks in the getty side, outfield, playing him to pull toward right, here's the pitch.
- 15:32Curve is low inside, ball one.
- 15:36One ball, no strikes.
- 15:40Billy Johnson about six, eight feet off third baseline, a step away from the edge of the infield grass,
- 15:44Rosuto over near second to hold Jorgensen close.
- 15:46Jerry Coleman, the second baseman, back on the edge of the outfield grass,
- 15:49and at a point almost halfway between first and second with Henrik Diep on top of the first baseline.
- 15:54One out, one on, top of the first inning.
- 15:56Reynolds has a stretch, the pitch.
- 15:58Snyder takes inside the curve, ball two, two balls, no strikes.
- 16:03And you've got Jackie Robinson in the batter's circle.
- 16:09A 2-0 count.
- 16:11Milton Stock coaching at third for Brooklyn, Jake Fittler at first.
- 16:17Barragh gives Reynolds a sign, the right-hander with a stretch, checks his runner.
- 16:20Here's the pitch.
- 16:21Snyder takes strike call over the outside corner, knee high.
- 16:24The 2-1 count.
- 16:27Two balls, one strike, one out.
- 16:30And the fans beginning to warm to this first World Series game.
- 16:34They're still tingling over the sensational finishes in the two major leagues.
- 16:42Reynolds takes a little too much time for Snyder, and he steps out of the batter's box.
- 16:51Duke moves back into hitting position.
- 16:56Dodgers have something boiling in the top of the first inning.
- 16:59Two balls, one strike, count on Snyder, the stretch by Reynolds, Jorgensen off second.
- 17:03In comes the pitch, outside, ball three, the curve, slow curve, didn't break over.
- 17:09Three and one now to count.
- 17:18Big Cal Hubbard calling balls and strikes, beams ridden, umpiring at first.
- 17:21Art Passerelle at second.
- 17:22Lou Jordan at third.
- 17:24Hurley down the right fielder, bar down the left fielder.
- 17:26The 3-1 pitch.
- 17:27Swung on him, missed strike two, he cut hard.
- 17:29Man, he leveled.
- 17:33The right field stands here at Yankee Stadium are most inviting.
- 17:37296 feet down the right fielder into the corner with a barrier sloping off.
- 17:42It's a barrier I'd say approximately three and a half, four feet high.
- 17:48And at a point about 50 yards off the line, it's only 344 feet.
- 17:52So he got a full count now on Snyder.
- 17:53Three balls, two strikes, one out, Jorgensen on second.
- 17:56Reynolds takes the stretch.
- 17:57The Spiner has the lead.
- 17:58Here's the pitch.
- 17:59Snyder swings and he misses, cut three and he's out of there.
- 18:07Alley came in with a fastball.
- 18:09Got it in comparatively close to Duke.
- 18:13There's a case there I believe Red have either gone all the way or not at all.
- 18:18He really cut on that one.
- 18:20And now here's Jackie Robinson.
- 18:28Jackie won the National League Batting Championship, spark plug of the Dodger team, right hand
- 18:32hitter.
- 18:35Wound up the season hitting a.342 as did the American League Batting Champion.
- 18:39George Kell with Ted Williams also a.342 average, but Kell had just a bit of an edge
- 18:44on him when you carried it out to five figures.
- 18:46Now the pitch.
- 18:47Strike called sidearm fastball in there above the knees.
- 18:50One strike to count on Robinson.
- 18:52The outfield is shading him toward left and centered left.
- 18:57Cliff makes not too far over in the right center, but then quite a lot of room down
- 19:01The right field sector between him and the right field line.
- 19:04Johnson in halfway guarding third base line.
- 19:07Reynolds delivers.
- 19:08Robinson takes outside and low for a ball and the count is evened up at one and one.
- 19:12Phil Rizzuto is about three striers to the left of short.
- 19:14There's a good shot between Johnson and Rizzuto with Jerry Coleman the second baseman, two
- 19:18striers to the right of the bag and trying to hold Jorgensen as close as possible.
- 19:22Tommy Henrik about eight feet off the first base line and deep.
- 19:26Robinson out of the bat is boxed just for a moment.
- 19:30Gene Hermanski is on deck.
- 19:32Jorgensen on second, two down.
- 19:34Count of one and one on Jackie.
- 19:38Reynolds ready with a stretch.
- 19:39A look back.
- 19:40Here's the pitch.
- 19:41Slow curve, swung on, drilled out the right field.
- 19:42There's Mates digging over and back and he's got it for the out and the inning is over.
- 19:47Robinson lines out to Mates on right.
- 19:49No runs, one hit, no errors and one man left on base.
- 19:53And the score at the end of the first half of the first inning, nothing and nothing.
- 19:59This is the Red Letter Day we've been waiting for all season.
- 20:02The opening day of the series.
- 20:04Yes, and it's also a Red Letter Day for every man who shaves.
- 20:08Ford Gillette announces the most amazing offer ever made on a World Series broadcast.
- 20:14Your favorite store now has the sensational Gillette Super Speed Razor and 10-blade Gillette
- 20:19Dispenser and a permanent travel case of handsome styrene.
- 20:23An outstanding $1.75 value for only a dollar.
- 20:27Remember, this is the Gillette one-piece razor that changes blades presto and makes
- 20:33shaving a breeze.
- 20:35Remember, you get 10 super keen Gillette blue blades and a handy dispenser.
- 20:40Remember, this combination comes in one of the most serviceable razor cases ever devised.
- 20:45Yes, and I repeat, you pay only $1 for this big $1.75 value.
- 20:51Ask for the special World Series Gillette razor set.
- 20:57Last half of the first inning, Big Don Newcomb, sensational right-hander for the Dodgers on
- 21:02The hill who won 17 games for Brooklyn after starting late in the year, being recalled
- 21:07from Montreal.
- 21:09And leading off for the Yankees is their candidate, one of their candidates for the most valuable
- 21:14player award in the American League this year, Phil Rizzuto.
- 21:18One of the few Yankees who did not come under the injury jinx.
- 21:24To any extent, he was out of two games.
- 21:27And actually, the one man on the entire ball club, they could have done least without.
- 21:31They could at least have done without.
- 21:33So Don Newcomb, the right-hander's first pitch to little Phil, is inside for ball one.
- 21:40Rizzuto is in his fourth World Series.
- 21:42He played in 1941, 42, and 47 with the 277 World Series batting average.
- 21:51Newcomb delivers, and the pitch is in there for a call strike.
- 21:55Fastball came in there just below the shoulders.
- 21:58Oddly enough, Phil's batting average for the 1949 season's 277.
- 22:04Tommy Henryk on deck.
- 22:06Jorgensen's in close at third. Phil's a good runner.
- 22:09Reached deep and short, about four strides, a five to the left of the bag, over toward the third base hole.
- 22:15Here's your pitch. It's bunted but up in the air.
- 22:17There's Gil Hodges digging over, foul territory makes the catch for the out.
- 22:24So Phil attempted to come up with his specialty, a bunt, only on this occasion,
- 22:29instead of dumping it down the third baseline, he tried to shove it by the mound.
- 22:32That was his intention, with Robinson deep at second.
- 22:35But instead he popped it into the air in foul territory, back of first, and Gil Hodges pranced over and grabbed it easily.
- 22:42So there's one out, and up comes Tommy Henryk.
- 22:47Tommy hitting a 287 on the season.
- 22:52Played in the 38, 41, and 47 World Series. Left hand hitter, the outfielder around toward right.
- 22:57Don Newcomb into the wind, up around comes the right arm, the pitch is fastball outside, ball one.
- 23:02Hermanski on left, Snyder in center, Ferullo on right.
- 23:05Jorgensen third, Reese short, Robinson second, Hodges first, Campanella catching.
- 23:10Newcomb pitching.
- 23:14Now the 1-0 delivery on its way, and Tommy Henryk takes outside for ball two.
- 23:19Two balls, no strikes.
- 23:20Frank Corsetti is coaching at third base for New York, and Bill Dickey at first.
- 23:27Gene Hermanski is way over in the left center, and Tommy Henryk is adept at placing balls in the left field.
- 23:36But of course they may figure that Newcomb is too fast for Tommy to do that on.
- 23:39In comes the pitch, Henryk swings and smacks it right out to short, Reese grabs it,
- 23:43blows on over to Hodges in time, and they're two away.
- 23:47It was a hard ground ball, a couple of swift hops to Peewee, took one step to his left, up with it easily, over to Hodges, two down.
- 23:54Now the batter is Yogi Berra.
- 24:00Berra, left-hand hitter, played in the 1947 World Series, had a 1.58 batting average, had one home run.
- 24:10That was a pinch hit homer at Ebbets Field.
- 24:13In close to the plate, he stands deep in the batter's box, throws that bat down to the end of the handle.
- 24:17Don Newcomb throws, fastball golf foul on the ground down the first base line, strike one.
- 24:25No score, last half of the first inning.
- 24:29Two teams that came in a hurry to finish with sensational finishing drives,
- 24:36and today they're sort of feeling one another out in the early moments and getting the feel of the World Series.
- 24:42Now the one strike pitch on its way to Berra.
- 24:45It takes a change up its outside for ball one, one and one.
- 24:51Joe DiMaggio is on deck in the batter's circle, swinging a couple of bats around.
- 24:56Two men out, nobody on. No score, last half of the first inning.
- 25:01Don Newcomb's one-one pitch on its way. Swung on to high pop-up, out back of short, Reese dips on the grass and short left a couple of steps under the ball,
- 25:08makes the catch and the inning is over.
- 25:11No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left on, and the score at the end of the first inning of the 1949 World Series is nothing and nothing.
- 25:22Red, I believe in 1947, the first game or two of the World Series started out comparatively slow,
- 25:28and then it really began to pick up in tempo, didn't it?
- 25:30Yes, it did, Mel. Once it got going, it just took everything with it.
- 25:34Almost took us with it, too.
- 25:36The first inning showed the dominance of the pitches, but for the fact that Lindell came in when he should have been going back on Jorgensen's double,
- 25:44it could have been played as to an easy fly ball, would have had three up and three down.
- 25:49So I see Reynolds is out there getting all set. You'll hear you, Mel.
- 25:54And coming up for the Brooklyn Dodgers will be Gene Hermanski, Carl Ferrellow, and Gil Hodges.
- 26:01Gene, the left-hand hitter, hailing from over Jersey Way, a boy that resembles an appearance that is facially the late Lou Gehry.
- 26:13He's built somewhat along Lou's lines, Lou's a little stockier, I think, overall.
- 26:19Gene hits the long ball. On the season, Hermanski had a batting average with the Dodgers of 299.
- 26:26He appeared in 87 games as Bert Schotten alternated his outfielders to get the most out of them at the proper time.
- 26:38So Gene steps in, Allie Reynolds from Oklahoma City, all set to go.
- 26:44You've got Lindell on left, DiMaggio in center, Mapeson right, Johnson third to Zudow short, Coleman second, Henrik first, Barry catching, and Reynolds pitching.
- 26:55John Stock coaching at third, Jake Cutler at first for Brooklyn. Top of the second inning, no score, Reynolds into the windup, in comes the pitch,
- 27:01Hermanski takes just outside for a ball, one ball, no strikes.
- 27:06Big gap in the outfields and left center, Lindell looking for Hermanski to slice.
- 27:11DiMaggio's not too far off a straightaway center line, but a step or so toward right center.
- 27:15Now the pitch, Hermanski takes strike call fastball, pump through there above the knees, and the count now is evened up at one and one.
- 27:23Generally speaking, in a World Series, it being the best four out of seven, they call it a short series, pitching is the big key.
- 27:31Now the one-one delivery, high and outside, ball two, two and one.
- 27:38Reynolds indicated a curve, but came in with a fastball, it was high and outside.
- 27:45Two balls, one strike on Hermanski, Gene with a slightly open stance, bend slightly at the knees, deep in the batter's box, fairly close to the plate,
- 27:52pitch swung on, Luke Fowle back to third, going to go out of play, and the ball goes into the upper deck along the left field line.
- 27:59So you've got a 2-2 count on Hermanski.
- 28:04Six umpires, we like to mention their names as frequently as possible because sometimes they are the forgotten men and they do a tremendous job.
- 28:13Cal Hubbard at the plate, and the American League, Beans Riddle of the National League at first, Art Pastorello of the American League at second,
- 28:19Lou Jordan of the National League at third. Now the 2-2 pitch on its way, Hermanski takes inside, almost went for a sweeping curve that broke in on him,
- 28:28and it's a full count on Hermanski. George Bauer of the National League is umpiring down the left field line, and Ed Hurley of the American League down the right field line.
- 28:37It would be their job to watch balls that are hit into the stands and close to the foul poles.
- 28:44Now the payoff pitch to Hermanski is low, ball four, and he's on.
- 28:50So the Dodgers get the lead man on in the top of the second inning, a base on balls, first given up by Reynolds to Gene Hermanski.
- 28:59And here's Carl Ferrello, who in the late stages of the Dodgers pennant fight was hitting that ball at a murderous clip.
- 29:09Carl wound up the season hitting at 322, and Red I imagine he was hitting pretty close to 450 down the stretch, wasn't he?
- 29:18The last two months of the season. Carl Batson right-handed, playing his ball game with a groin injury, well taped up, right hand here to the stretch,
- 29:28a look over it first, here's the pitch, and it's low outside, almost into the dirt.
- 29:33Yogi had to go to his knees and to his right to keep that from skipping by. One ball, no strikes.
- 29:39Been a lot of talk, of course, about the possibility of the Dodgers running on Barra, as they did in 1947.
- 29:47Bill Johnson's in close at third in the event of the bunt near the line.
- 29:50Rizzuto in halfway at short, two strides or three to the left of the bag.
- 29:54Here's your pitch, and it's low, ball two.
- 29:57Now Jerry Coleman trots in from second base, calls time to talk to Reynolds.
- 30:03Alley missing that plate now and getting himself in a little trouble.
- 30:07He worked hard on Hermanski and finally lost him.
- 30:13Now he's got a 2-0 count on Perillo, and you've got Gil Hodges on deck.
- 30:18Coleman is shading second, just a little bit more than first.
- 30:22Henrik holding it first against Hermanski, the stretch by Reynolds, the 2-0 pitch, strike called.
- 30:29Fast ball over there, just above the knees, it's a 2-1 count.
- 30:33The outfield for Perillo is toward right and center and right,
- 30:37with Lindell looking for Carl to hit the left but not to pull too sharply.
- 30:41All the room in the world in left center and just off the straightaway center line.
- 30:46Two balls, one strike, nobody out. Gene Hermanski on first base.
- 30:49Now Henrik's not holding against him, it's just in behind him a step.
- 30:52The stretch by Reynolds, here's your pitch, and it's low, ball three.
- 30:563-1 count on Perillo.
- 31:03Always the bugaboo of any manager is the base on balls.
- 31:113-1 count on Perillo.
- 31:15Reynolds checks with Barra, getting his sign.
- 31:20Now he's ready.
- 31:22Hermanski with the lead, the stretch, there he goes, the pitch swung on, hit foul down the right field line into the lower stands, strike two.
- 31:30So Hermanski has to come back to first.
- 31:34He stops Ira to exchange her word of two with Phil Rizzuto, their neighbors around Newark, around the Newark area.
- 31:44Baseball players are wonderful people, they battle one another tooth and nail, but in an idle moment of game they'll swap small talk.
- 31:55All right, you've got a full count on Perillo, three and two.
- 31:59Nobody out, top of the second inning, no scores yet.
- 32:01Carl digs in, backcocked up off his right shoulder, in close to the plate, slightly open stance, the stretch.
- 32:06There goes Hermanski, the pitch is taken high outside, ball four.
- 32:09He slowed up on Perillo, but didn't get the ball over.
- 32:14Walks to Hermanski and Perillo, they've got the Dodgers in business in the top of the second inning, nobody out, and Billy Johnson goes over to talk to Reynolds, and there's a signal for action in the Yankee bullpen.
- 32:34Gil Hodges, right-hand hitter, steps in.
- 32:41Hits 286 on the year, including 23 home runs and drove in 114 runs for the Dodgers.
- 32:50Reynolds ready, the runner's on first and second, the Yankees looking for the bunt, the pitch is inside for the ball.
- 32:57Yogi Barrett claims that the ball hit the bat of Hodges, but Cal Hubbard says no, it's a ball.
- 33:04Fred Sanford is starting to throw in the Yankee bullpen.
- 33:08Gil Hodges squared away to bunt, that pitch was way in on him, he had to jump to get away from it.
- 33:14Henrik's in close at first, Johnson in close at third, Johnson will try to anchor at third if he can, but if the ball is pushed that way, he'll have to leave the bag.
- 33:21Hermanski moves off second, Perillo off first, the stretch by Reynolds.
- 33:24Here comes Henrik, the pitch is bunnied and it's fouled off to the right of the plate.
- 33:28It's a beautiful bunt, but it's squirted foul, spun foul off to the right, and it's a 1-1 count.
- 33:35Tommy Henrik is charging the plate, Billy Johnson is trying to anchor, Reynolds attempting to protect the third baseline.
- 33:42And Barrett, of course, moving with the ball, with Coleman breaking toward first and Rizzuto second.
- 33:49One ball, one strike, you've got Roy Campanella on deck, and Newcomb to follow him, and incidentally Newcomb is a pretty good hitter for a pitcher,
- 33:58so that you can anticipate the possibilities.
- 34:02Top of the second inning, no scores yet, Hermanski off second, Perillo off first, here's the pitch, Hodges, bunt sanded is fouled off to the right for strike two, 1-2.
- 34:21Now Gil Hodges will have to be swinging away unless Bert Schotton would order a third strike bunt, which isn't likely if you allow us to speculate for a moment, although it does happen.
- 34:31It could happen now.
- 34:36One ball, two strikes, Billy Johnson backs up at third, near the line, Rizzuto off to the left of second base about five strides in a couple of steps.
- 34:45Jerry Coleman two strides to the right of second.
- 34:50Reynolds ready, here's the pitch, and Hodges swings and hits one back to Reynolds, Reynolds fires to Coleman for one, Coleman back to Henrik, a double play.
- 35:07And the third on the play went Gene Hermanski.
- 35:19Gil Hodges hit to the box, Reynolds grabbed it through to Coleman, high, Coleman leap, grabbed it, came down on the bag and fired to Henrik to double up Hodges after they had gotten Perillo at second and Hermanski went to third on the play.
- 35:33The batter now is Roy Campanella, Casey Stengel was just out the mound to talk to Allie Reynolds.
- 35:39Roy Campanella hitting a 287, right hand hitter, squares away, the outfield plays him almost straight away, slightly toward left, here's the pitch, inside, around the letters, ball one, one ball, no strikes.
- 35:53No scores yet, top of the second inning.
- 36:02Allie checks with Barra, Hermanski on third.
- 36:05Reynolds delivers, Campanella swings and hits a fly ball out into right field, Cliff Maipes is gathering himself under it, and he makes the catch for the out.
- 36:15No runs, no hits, no errors, and one man left on.
- 36:22Well, as Cliff Maipes gathered that ball in to end the inning, it reminds me that one of baseball's greatest outfielders is Dom DiMaggio of the Boston Red Sox, and he's parked at my elbow right at the moment.
- 36:36Dom, anybody who grows whiskers like yours should know a thing or two about razor blades.
- 36:42How do you rate Gillette blue blades?
- 36:44They're tops with me. I never use any other kind.
- 36:48Easy shaving?
- 36:49You said it, and long lasting too.
- 36:52How about the Gillette dispenser, like it?
- 36:54It's a real convenience, saves a lot of fuss.
- 36:57Now men, see if Dom DiMaggio isn't right.
- 37:00Buy Gillette blue blades, 10 or 20, in the handy Gillette dispenser for the price of the blades alone.
- 37:06Remember, it zips them out unwrapped and makes blade changing a cinch.
- 37:11Look sharp, feel sharp, be sharp, use Gillette blue blades, with the sharpest edges ever honed.
- 37:20Dom, while you and I were chatting, a friend of yours just walked up to home plate and got a hand.
- 37:25Yes, I see him down there.
- 37:27Who is he?
- 37:28Big Joe, the jolder.
- 37:30He's a pretty good outfielder himself, isn't he, Dom?
- 37:35Yes, he is, Mel, one of the best of all time.
- 37:37Thanks a lot, Dom DiMaggio, and congratulations on a wonderful season.
- 37:42And now as we come into the last half of the second inning here at the Yankee Stadium, no score.
- 37:46Joe DiMaggio leads off, right hand hitter, hit.346 on the season in 76 games in which he appeared after missing the first 65 because of his now celebrated injured heel.
- 37:58Don Ucombe starts to work, the big right-hander, round comes the right arm, in comes the pitch, and it's outside, ball one.
- 38:05One ball, no strikes.
- 38:08DiMaggio has been in seven World Series, this is his eighth, and he has a lifetime World Series batting average of 290, 21 RBI's.
- 38:19Ucombe throws, DiMaggio takes right in there for a call strike.
- 38:24Ucombe, a great big fella, sort of untangles himself, and he goes into that windup, and he fires away.
- 38:32A one-on-one count on Joe, Spidey Jorgensen deep at third near the line, reached very deep, not too far over into the gap.
- 38:39Here's the pitch, swung on, drill foul down the right field line, out of play, the ball hitting the upper deck and bouncing downstairs, and it's a one-two count on Joe.
- 38:48Johnny Lindell is on deck with Billy Johnson to follow.
- 38:53Nothing and nothing, last half of the second.
- 38:59Gene Hermanski has just put on his sunglasses, the sun begins to peep out again here at Yankee Stadium.
- 39:07The wind is blowing in a mild fashion at the moment toward the left a bit, and also toward right just a bit.
- 39:15It's a variable wind, but not too strong right now.
- 39:18Here's your pitch, and DiMaggio swings and misses, strike three, try to hold up, it couldn't.
- 39:28It was a high inside fastball that DiMaggio started to go for, he tried to hold up, but he went around.
- 39:33Big Cal Hubbard went up with the right hand, and it's strike three.
- 39:37Here's Johnny Lindell, who with one mighty swipe of his bat on Saturday, enabled the Yankees to stay alive in the American League pennant race,
- 39:47since it tied the Yankees with the Red Sox, broke a 4-4 tie in that particular ball game,
- 39:53and made it possible for the Yankees to go into Sunday with a chance to win the pennant, which they did.
- 40:01Don Ucom goes to work on the right hand hitter, and the pitch is right in there for a call strike, right over the inside corner, belt high.
- 40:08Ucom looks sharp.
- 40:12I feel playing Lindell to pull.
- 40:14Carl Frillo is looking for John to hit over toward the right center a bit.
- 40:19Frillo's over in front of the Yankee bullpen.
- 40:22Now the delivery. Change up his swing arm, lined out to left field for a base hit.
- 40:26The ball is taken by Hermanski on two or three hops, clips his leg in to second, cut off by Reese, and Lindell is on with a single to left field.
- 40:35He changed up on Lindell, and Johnny immediately spiked the line in the left for the single, and the first Yankee hit of the game.
- 40:46Now Billy Johnson steps in.
- 40:50Lindell had been in two previous series, 43 and 47.
- 40:54Billy Johnson also in the 43 and 47 World Series.
- 40:58Johnson right hand batter.
- 41:02Billy hit 251 on the season.
- 41:05Below his par, the delivery, right in there for a call strike.
- 41:13Outfield well spread out for Johnson.
- 41:16He can pull, he'll slice, and he can hit a long ball.
- 41:21Jorgensen halfway back at third, a couple feet off the line. Reese in a couple steps, it's short.
- 41:25Five strides to the left of second. Here's the pitch.
- 41:28Swung on, a ground ball hit foul down the third baseline. Frank Corsetti coaching third grand set.
- 41:32And the two strike count on Billy.
- 41:34Cliff Mapes is on deck.
- 41:37Crowd sitting back rather quiet.
- 41:40Waiting for the big explosion that generally will take place in a tight ball game.
- 41:45And of course they're ready to yell at the first opportunity either of these teams gives them.
- 41:52A two strike count on Billy.
- 41:55Lindell moves off first, one away. Here's your pitch.
- 41:58Swung on in this, strike three.
- 42:00Went down, swing on the fastball.
- 42:03That Newcomb's got a quick one. He's really alive with it, isn't he Red?
- 42:08Well, Mel, he struck out 149 and only came up after the season was a month old. You can figure that for yourself.
- 42:15Here's Cliff Mapes stepping in.
- 42:17Who on the season hit 243.
- 42:20Played great defensive ball for the Yankees. Got a tremendous arm.
- 42:26They play him to pull sharply in center and right.
- 42:29And now Berkshot is moving Gene Hermansky way over to left center.
- 42:32Newcomb's delivery, he's swung on and foul back. Strike one.
- 42:36Mapes is another of the Yankee left hand hitters who on occasion will line that ball down the left field line.
- 42:43And they're giving him plenty of that sector at the moment.
- 42:48Great deal, Ira, depends on the way a man is pitched as to where he's going to hit the ball.
- 42:52And the boys in the field generally know everything being equal where he might hit it in the general direction if he hits the pitch.
- 42:59Newcomb throws. Mapes takes inside around the knees. Ball one, one and one.
- 43:04Peabody's deep and short over towards second. About two strides to the left of second base.
- 43:09Spidey Jorgensen halfway back, ten feet off third baseline.
- 43:12Gil Hodges just in behind Lindell with two down.
- 43:14And Jackie Robinson at a point about halfway between first and second bases.
- 43:18No scores yet, two away. Here's your delivery. Swung on and missed. Strike two.
- 43:24Newcomb just overpowering Mapes as he did DiMaggio and Johnson.
- 43:29And as a matter of fact, he might have done the same to Lindell. He's slowed up on John.
- 43:34And John opportunity to capitalize on the change of pace from that line drive to left.
- 43:43A one-two count on Mapes. Two down, no score. Last half of the second inning.
- 43:48Dodgers and Yankees at Yankee Stadium. It's the World Series.
- 43:53Newcomb throws. Mapes swings and misses. Strike three and he strikes out the side.
- 43:58He blazes in there. No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left on.
- 44:03And a hand for Newcomb as he leaves the mound.
- 44:06Check that. One man left on base. No runs, no hits, no errors, one left on.
- 44:12Three strikeouts for Newcomb, all in the top half of the second inning.
- 44:17Let me double-checking your totals. No runs, one hit, no errors, one left on.
- 44:25And thus the score at the end of two innings, nothing and nothing.
- 44:30The Dodgers, no runs, one hit, no errors, two left on.
- 44:35The Yankees, no runs, one hit, no errors, and one man left on.
- 44:40Now before we move into the top half of the third inning as the Dodgers come to bat,
- 44:44we pause for station identification. This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 44:51WOR and WOR-FM, your World Series stations in New York.
- 44:59This is Mel Allen with Red Barber bringing you the 1949 World Series from Yankee Stadium,
- 45:05another in Gillette's Cavalcade of Sports broadcast.
- 45:09The year-round they bring you the outstanding bowl games, fights, the World Series, the All-Star game,
- 45:16and we hope that you're going to enjoy to the hilt the 1949 Fall Classic.
- 45:23And now as we go to the top of the third inning, Don Newcomb steps in a hitting position.
- 45:27He's a left-hand hitter and a good hitter for a pitcher.
- 45:31We watched him hit one in that All-Star game.
- 45:33Ted Williams made a sensational catch on a Robbie from an extra-base hit.
- 45:37Reynolds throws in there for a called strike.
- 45:44Outfield playing Newcomb to, well, they're playing him almost straight away.
- 45:49DiMaggio straight away in center.
- 45:51Lindell not too close to the left field line, and Napes not too close to the right field line.
- 45:55The left field and right field are in toward DiMaggio straight away.
- 45:58The pitch is swung on. A boundary hit out toward short.
- 46:00Rizzuto charges it up with it, throws over to Henrik in time, and there's one away.
- 46:04Newcomb grounds out. Rizzuto to Henrik.
- 46:07One away for the Dodgers in the top of the third inning.
- 46:10And now we go to the top of the order again for the brilliant shortstop and captain of the Dodgers, Peewee Reeves.
- 46:18A nickname that, in a sense, is a misnomer, isn't it, Red? Because Reeves certainly is no Peewee.
- 46:24Now, he got the name when he was a Marlboro shooting champion back at Louisville playing Peewees.
- 46:30I used to shoot Marlboro.
- 46:32Went very good. I never won a championship, Ed.
- 46:37Reeves grounded out to Henrik in the first inning. Right-hand hitter.
- 46:40Reynolds throws. Fastball in there for a call strike.
- 46:43Nothing and nothing.
- 46:46Top half of the third. One out. Nobody on.
- 46:49Bill Johnson in close at third in the event. Reeves drops a bunt down, which Peewee can do on occasion.
- 46:55Quick getting away from that plate.
- 46:57Reynolds sidearms him. Pitch is bunted right down toward third. Johnson charges up with it.
- 47:01Fires over to Henrik and it's in time for the out.
- 47:14I don't think Peewee was reading our minds, but he did drop one down there beautifully.
- 47:20And Reynolds came very close to messing up the play. Johnson finally hollered him off.
- 47:25Reynolds was moving away from the play at first toward the third baseline while Johnson was moving in.
- 47:31And Billy with that rifle arm fired Peewee out.
- 47:34Here's Spider Jorgensen swing. Sends a grass cutter out to second.
- 47:37Coleman scoops it up, throws over to Henrik and the inning is over.
- 47:44So the third baseman, second baseman shortstop each had an opportunity that inning.
- 47:48No runs, no hits, no errors. Nobody left on.
- 47:52And the score at the end of two and a half innings remains the Dodgers nothing, the Yankees nothing.
- 47:59As Dom DiMaggio, famous outfielder of the Boston Red Sox, told you,
- 48:03Gillette blue blades are tops for shaving yeas and the economy as well.
- 48:08That's because they have the cleanest, most beautifully finished edges ever produced.
- 48:13Those edges also are hard nut cut glass. So they shave and shave and shave.
- 48:19They never break down prematurely like ordinary blades that scrape and pull.
- 48:24Now I know you'll find the modern Gillette dispenser just as handy as Dom DiMaggio does.
- 48:29You see it zips the blades out on rep ready for use, saving you time, fuss and bother.
- 48:35Ask for Gillette blue blades and the modern Gillette dispenser.
- 48:39They come factory sharp and stay that way until used.
- 48:43You get 20 blades, 40 shaving edges for 98 cents, 10 blades for 49 cents.
- 48:50Remember, look sharp, feel sharp, be sharp.
- 48:55Use Gillette blue blades for the sharpest edges ever honed.
- 49:01Last half of the third inning at Yankee Stadium, no score.
- 49:06Jerry Coleman, the number eight hitter in the Yankee batting order,
- 49:09who will lead off and will come Allie Reynolds and the top of the order, Bill Rizzuto.
- 49:14Coleman, a right hand hitter, playing in his first World Series.
- 49:17A Yankee rookie this year who played sensational second base defensively and pretty good clutch hitter.
- 49:22It was his hit in the eighth inning, but the bases loaded that iced the pennant for the Yankees against the Red Sox on Sunday.
- 49:28Newcomb throws, the pitcher swung on foul off to the right of the plate,
- 49:31into the upper deck and a World Series souvenir for someone who also will wind up with a swollen hand for a couple of days.
- 49:38One strike to count.
- 49:43I could hear that ball hit that meat hand, couldn't you, Rizz?
- 49:47One strike to count on Jerry Coleman.
- 49:52Jerry hit 275 on the season.
- 49:55San Francisco boy, the pitch curve ball is just outside ball one, one and one.
- 50:01Coleman acts exactly as his mannerisms are almost a faithful reproduction of Frank Crissetti's.
- 50:12And yet, the one did not know the other.
- 50:15At a time in the formative stage when you develop those little mannerisms, you do have playing ball.
- 50:22The one and one delivery, swung on hit foul down the first base line, a liner, strike two.
- 50:27One and two to count, the ball skipped up into the stands, into the boxes, and the usual scramble for a World Series souvenir.
- 50:35Another thing, Crissetti and Coleman both come from San Francisco, and for a long while even Jerry's own teammates thought that he patterned himself deliberately after Crissetti.
- 50:45The way he'd move his shoulders, the way he handled the ball, the way he got it away in a hurry.
- 50:49It turned out it was strictly coincidental.
- 50:54One and two to count on Coleman, last to third inning, nothing and nothing.
- 50:59Big Don Newcomb starts to work.
- 51:01Around comes the right arm, in comes the pitch, and it's over that outside corner for call, strike three.
- 51:06Man, I mean he cut loose a fast ball. It looked like an aspirin tablet coming up there.
- 51:13And that is the fourth strikeout for Newcomb, and four out of the last five batters.
- 51:20Up comes Ali Reynolds.
- 51:25Reynolds hitting a 221.
- 51:28If Newcomb continues at this pace, we're going to those World Series record books, Red.
- 51:37Newcomb's first pitch to the right hand batter. Reynolds swings and fouls it off behind the plate, strike one.
- 51:46Newcomb must be pretty quick because they're not looking for Reynolds to pull him.
- 51:50The outfield is shading toward right on Reynolds.
- 51:55Ali can swing the bat pretty well for Fitcher.
- 51:59Jorgensen's hanging around in close at third near the line, reese over towards second.
- 52:05Here's Newcomb's delivery. Reynolds swings and sends a fly ball down the left field line, and he did pull him,
- 52:10and Hermanski can't get it, and the ball is by him, and Reynolds is going to go for two.
- 52:14Sometimes they'll throw a beautiful throw, but Reynolds goes in standing up for the double.
- 52:17The ball gets by Robinson, but Gil Hodges is backing up.
- 52:28Ali Reynolds caught him over-shifting for him, as they didn't figure Ali could pull Don, but he did.
- 52:35It was an ordinary fly ball that Hermanski could have put in his hip pocket had he been playing Reynolds to pull,
- 52:41but he was way over in the left center and couldn't catch up to it.
- 52:44So that's the Yankees' second hit of the ball game.
- 52:48Three in the game. The Dodgers have had one, and up is Phil Rizzuto, who fouled out in the first inning to Campanella.
- 52:54The pitch is swung on, fouled back to the screen, strike one.
- 52:58Last half of the third inning. One out, and Reynolds on second base.
- 53:07Outfield for Phil. Almost right away, Sniders has to step over into left center.
- 53:14Spider Jorgensen hanging around in close at third. Now he backs up a step. Not too deep.
- 53:19Don Ucomm stretches, pitches. Phil takes just off the outside corner, and the count is evened up at one and one.
- 53:26And so the crowd now has begun to warm a little bit to the situation, with the runner in scoring position.
- 53:33One ball, one strike, one out. Most score. Last of the third inning.
- 53:37Ucomm has his sign from Campanella. He's ready to work. Here's his pitch.
- 53:40And it is swung on. A little pop-up hit back to first. There's Robinson going out on the grass in short right.
- 53:45Makes the catch, and Reynolds holds at second base.
- 53:48Rizzuto lifts a pop-up back to first, which Jackie Robinson needs over to guess.
- 53:52And now Tommy Henrik is coming to bat with two down.
- 53:57Tommy was tossed out by Peewee Reese in the first inning.
- 54:03Yogi Berra moving up into the batter's circle with his shin guard still on with two down.
- 54:09He will not bat in this inning unless Henrik keeps the Yankee hopes alive.
- 54:13It's a nothing-nothing ball game. Last of the third.
- 54:18The Dodgers have had a runner as far as third. Hermanski in the second inning.
- 54:25Reynolds is the furthest a Yankee has been. On second base.
- 54:29Lindell single, but didn't get any further than that in the second inning.
- 54:34Ucomm with the stretch. Reynolds with a short lead. Here's your pitch. Henrik takes inside for the ball.
- 54:40Roy Campanella, very agile back of that plate, moves his feet around beautifully.
- 54:45As soon as he catches that ball, he's got that arm cocked and ready to fire.
- 54:48In the event a throw is necessary to any base.
- 54:52Nobody is darting around trying to hold Reynolds close because he hasn't had too big a lead.
- 54:56Two down. Stretch by Ucomm. Here's your pitch. Henrik swings and pops it up into the air.
- 55:02Short third. Jorgensen getting out of the ball.
- 55:04And then Reese takes him off and says he's got it and does, makes the catch for the out.
- 55:10No runs for the Yankees. One hit. No errors for Brooklyn.
- 55:15And one man left on for New York.
- 55:18I might add that at this time of year at Yankee Stadium when the sun is out brightly,
- 55:24particularly a little bit later on the ball game, the sun field, which is left field, is a murderous one.
- 55:30And also those who might be playing in center, if they're not accustomed to the situation here at Yankee Stadium,
- 55:38might find it difficult as Pete Reesor did in 1947.
- 55:41The sun is in behind home plate and it's a triple deck stadium.
- 55:46So a ball comes up out of home plate as it gets as high as the stadium, which is pretty high,
- 55:52and it has the stadium as a background.
- 55:54Then suddenly as it gets higher than the stadium, it's right into that sun and in a hurry.
- 55:59And so frequently it can give the outfielders trouble, even those who play against it all season long.
- 56:06Now at the end of three innings, the score, nothing and nothing.
- 56:11The Dodgers, no runs. One hit. No errors. Two left on.
- 56:15The Yankees, no runs. Two hits. No errors. And two men left on base.
- 56:21Don, while you and I were chatting, a friend of yours just walked up the home plate and got a hand.
- 56:26Yes, I see him down there. Who is he? Big Joe, the joker.
- 56:32He's a pretty good outfielder himself, isn't he, Don?
- 56:36Yes, he is, Mel. One of the best of all time.
- 56:38Thanks a lot, Don DeMaggio, and congratulations on a wonderful season.
- 56:43And now as we come into the last half of the second inning here at the Yankee Stadium, no score.
- 56:47Joe DeMaggio leads off. Right-hand hitter.
- 56:51Hit.346 on the season and 76 games in which he appeared after missing the first 65
- 56:56because of his now celebrated injured heel.
- 56:59Don Ucom starts to work, the big right-hander.
- 57:01Around comes the right arm. In comes the pitch, and it's outside. Ball one.
- 57:06One ball, no strikes.
- 57:08DeMaggio has been in seven World Series. This is his eighth.
- 57:12And he has a lifetime World Series batting average of 290, 21 RBIs.
- 57:19Ucom throws. DeMaggio takes right in there for a call strike.
- 57:24Ucom, a great big fella, sort of untangles himself, and he goes into that windup and he fires away.
- 57:33A one-on-one count on Joe. Spotted Jorgensen deep at third near the line.
- 57:37Reached very deep, not too far over into the gap. Here's the pitch.
- 57:40Swung on, drill foul down the right fielder line, out of play.
- 57:43The ball hitting the upper deck and bouncing downstairs, and it's a one-two count on Joe.
- 57:48Johnny Lindell is on deck with Billy Johnson to follow.
- 57:53Nothing and nothing. Last half of the second.
- 57:56Gene Hermanski has just put on his sunglasses.
- 58:03The sun begins to peep out again here at Yankee Stadium.
- 58:06The wind is blowing in a mild fashion at the moment toward the left a bit and also toward right just a bit.
- 58:15The variable wind, but not too strong right now.
- 58:18Here's your pitch. And DeMaggio swings and misses. Strike three. He tried to hold up, but couldn't.
- 58:23It was a high inside fastball that DeMaggio started to go for.
- 58:32He tried to hold up, but he went around.
- 58:34Big Cal Hubbard went up for the right hand and it's strike three.
- 58:38Here's Johnny Lindell, who with one mighty swipe of his bat on Saturday,
- 58:43enabled the Yankees to stay alive in the American League pennant race since it tied the Yankees with the Red Sox,
- 58:50broke a 4-4 tie in that particular ball game, and made it possible for the Yankees to go into Sunday
- 58:56with a chance to win the pennant, which they did.
- 59:01Don Newcomb goes to work on the right hand hitter.
- 59:04And the pitch is right in there for a call strike right over the inside corner, belt high.
- 59:09Newcomb looks sharp.
- 59:13I feel playing Lindell to pull.
- 59:15Carl Frillo is looking for John to hit over toward the right center a bit.
- 59:19Frillo's over in front of the Yankee bullpen.
- 59:23Now the delivery. Change up his swing arm, lined out the left field for a base hit.
- 59:27The ball is taken by Hermanski on two or three hops, clips his leg into second, cut off by Reese,
- 59:32and Lindell is on with a single to left field.
- 59:36He changed up on Lindell, and Johnny immediately spiked the liner in the left for the single.
- 59:44And the first Yankee hit of the game.
- 59:47Now Billy Johnson steps in.
- 59:50Lindell had been in two previous series, 43 and 47.
- 59:54Billy Johnson also in the 43 and 47 World Series.
- 59:58Johnson the right hand batter.
- 1:00:02Billy hits.251 on the season.
- 1:00:05Below his par, the delivery, right in there for a call strike.
- 1:00:13Outfield well spread out for Johnson.
- 1:00:16He can pull, he can slice, and he can hit a long ball.
- 1:00:21Jorgensen halfway back at third, a couple feet off the line.
- 1:00:24Reese in a couple steps at short, five strides to the left of second.
- 1:00:27Here's the pitch. Swung on, a ground ball hit foul down the third baseline.
- 1:00:30Frank Crisetti coaching third grand set.
- 1:00:33And the two strike count on Billy.
- 1:00:35Cliff Mapes is on deck.
- 1:00:38Crowd sitting back rather quiet.
- 1:00:41Waiting for the big explosion that generally will take place in a tight ball game.
- 1:00:45And of course they're ready to yell at the first opportunity either of these teams gives them.
- 1:00:52A two strike count on Billy.
- 1:00:55Lindell moves off first, one away.
- 1:00:57Here's your pitch. Swung on and missed. Strike three.
- 1:01:00Went down, swing on the fastball.
- 1:01:03That Newcombe's got a quick one. He's really alive with it, isn't he Red?
- 1:01:08Well, Mel, he struck out 149 and only came up after the season was a month old. You figure that for yourself.
- 1:01:15Here's Cliff Mapes stepping in, who on the season hit 243.
- 1:01:20Played great defensive ball for the Yankees. Got a tremendous arm.
- 1:01:26They play him to pull sharply in center and right.
- 1:01:29And now Berkshot is moving Gene Hermansky way over to left center.
- 1:01:32Newcombe's delivery, swung on and foul back. Strike one.
- 1:01:36Mapes is another of the Yankee left hand hitters who on occasion will line that ball down the left field line.
- 1:01:43And they're giving him plenty of that sector at the moment.
- 1:01:48Great deal, Howard, depends on the way a man is pitched as to where he's going to hit the ball.
- 1:01:52And the boys in the field generally know everything being equal where he might hit it in the general direction if he hits the pitch.
- 1:02:00Newcombe throws. Mapes takes inside around the knees. Ball one, one and one.
- 1:02:04Peabody's deep at short, over towards second. He's about two strides to the left of second base.
- 1:02:09By the Jorgensen, halfway back, ten feet off third baseline.
- 1:02:12Gil Hodges just in behind Lindell with two down.
- 1:02:15And Jackie Robinson at a point about halfway between first and second bases.
- 1:02:18No scores yet, two away. Here's your delivery. Swung on and missed. Strike two.
- 1:02:24Newcombe just overpowering, mates, as he did DiMaggio and Johnson.
- 1:02:29And as a matter of fact, he might have done the same to Lindell.
- 1:02:32He's slowed up on John. And John Tundey did capitalize on the change of pace with that line drive to left.
- 1:02:44A one-two count on mates. Two down, no score. Last half of the second inning.
- 1:02:48Dodgers and Yankees at Yankee Stadium. It's the World Series.
- 1:02:54Newcombe throws. Mates swings and misses. Strike three and he strikes out the side.
- 1:02:58He blazes in there. No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left on.
- 1:03:03And a hand for Newcombe as he leaves the mound.
- 1:03:06Check that. One man left on base. No runs, no hits, no errors, one left on.
- 1:03:12Three strikeouts for Newcombe, all in the top half of the second inning.
- 1:03:17Let me double-checking your totals. No runs, one hit, no errors, one left on.
- 1:03:25And thus the score at the end of two innings, nothing and nothing.
- 1:03:30The Dodgers, no runs, one hit, no errors, two left on.
- 1:03:35The Yankees, no runs, one hit, no errors, and one man left on.
- 1:03:40Now before we move into the top half of the third inning as the Dodgers come to bat, we pause for station identification.
- 1:03:48This is the Mutual Broadcasting System.
- 1:03:51WOR and WORFM, your World Series stations in New York.
- 1:03:57This is Mel Allen with Red Barber, bringing you the 1949 World Series from Yankee Stadium,
- 1:04:06another in Gillette's Cavalcade of Sports broadcast.
- 1:04:10The year-round, they bring you the outstanding bowl games, fights, the World Series, the All-Star game,
- 1:04:17and we hope that you're going to enjoy to the hilt the 1949 ball classic.
- 1:04:24And now as we go to the top of the third inning, Don Newcombe steps in a hitting position.
- 1:04:28He's a left-hand hitter and a good hitter for a pitcher.
- 1:04:32We watched him hit one on that All-Star game, but Ted Williams made a sensational catch on the Robbie from an extra-base hit.
- 1:04:37Reynolds throws in there for a called strike.
- 1:04:45Outfield playing Newcombe to, well, they're playing him almost straight away.
- 1:04:49DiMaggio straight away in center.
- 1:04:51Lindell not too close to the left fiel line, and Napes not too close to the right fiel line.
- 1:04:56The left fiel and right fiel are in toward DiMaggio straight away.
- 1:04:58The pitch is swung on. A boundary hit out toward short.
- 1:05:00Rizzuto charges it up with it, throws over to Henrik in time, and there's one away.
- 1:05:04Newcombe grounds out. Rizzuto to Henrik.
- 1:05:07One away for the Dodgers in the top of the third inning.
- 1:05:10And now we go to the top of the order again for the brilliant shortstop and captain of the Dodgers, Peewee Reeves.
- 1:05:18A nickname that, in a sense, is a misnomer, isn't it, Red? Because Reeves certainly is no Peewee.
- 1:05:24Now, he got the name when he was a Marlboro shooting champion back at Louisville playing Peewees.
- 1:05:30I used to shoot Marlboro.
- 1:05:33Went very good. I never won a championship, Ed.
- 1:05:37Reeves grounded out to Henrik in the first inning. Right hand hitter.
- 1:05:40Reynolds throws. Fastball in there for a call strike.
- 1:05:44Nothing and nothing.
- 1:05:46Top half of the third. One out. Nobody on.
- 1:05:49Bill Johnson in close at third. In the event, Reeves drops a bunt down, which Peewee can do on occasion.
- 1:05:55Quick getting away from that plate.
- 1:05:57Reynolds sidearms him. Pitch is bunted right down toward third. Johnson charges up with it.
- 1:06:01Fires over to Henrik and it's in time for the out.
- 1:06:14I don't think Peewee was reading our minds, but he did drop one down there beautifully.
- 1:06:21And Reynolds came very close to messing up the play. Johnson finally hollered him off.
- 1:06:25Reynolds was moving away from the play, from the play at first toward the third baseline while Johnson was moving in.
- 1:06:31And Billy with that rifle arm fired Peewee out.
- 1:06:34Here's Spider Jorgensen swing. Sends a grass cutter out to second.
- 1:06:37Coleman scoops it up, throws over to Henrik and the inning is over.
- 1:06:44So the third baseman, second baseman shortstop each had an opportunity that inning.
- 1:06:48No runs, no hits, no errors. Nobody left on.
- 1:06:52And the score at the end of two and a half innings remains the Dodgers nothing, the Yankees nothing.
- 1:06:59As Dom DiMaggio, famous outfielder of the Boston Red Sox, told you,
- 1:07:03Gillette blue blades are tops for shaving ease and economy as well.
- 1:07:08That's because they have the keenest, most beautifully finished edges ever produced.
- 1:07:13Those edges also are hard nuts cut glass. So they shave and shave and shave.
- 1:07:19Never break down prematurely like ordinary blades that scrape and pull.
- 1:07:24Now I know you'll find the modern Gillette dispenser just as handy as Dom DiMaggio does.
- 1:07:30You see it zips the blades out unwrapped, ready for use, saving you time, fuss and bother.
- 1:07:36Ask for Gillette blue blades and the modern Gillette dispenser.
- 1:07:40They come factory sharp and stay that way until used.
- 1:07:44You get 20 blades, 40 shaving edges for 98 cents, 10 blades for 49 cents.
- 1:07:51Remember, look sharp, feel sharp, be sharp.
- 1:07:56Use Gillette blue blades for the sharpest edges ever honed.
- 1:08:02Last half of the third inning at Yankee Stadium, no score.
- 1:08:07Jerry Coleman, the number eight hitter in the Yankee batting order,
- 1:08:10who will lead off and will come Ali Reynolds and the top of the order, Phil Rizzuto.
- 1:08:14Coleman, a right hand hitter, playing in his first World Series.
- 1:08:18A Yankee rookie this year who played sensational second base defensively and pretty good clutch hitter.
- 1:08:23It was his hit and he ate thinning, but the bases loaded that iced the pennant for the Yankees against the Red Sox on Sunday.
- 1:08:29Newcomb throws, the pitcher swung on foul off to the right of the plate,
- 1:08:32into the upper deck and a World Series souvenir for someone who also will wind up with a swollen hand for a couple of days.
- 1:08:39One strike to count.
- 1:08:44I could hear that ball hit that meat hand, couldn't you, Ria?
- 1:08:48One strike to count on Jerry Coleman.
- 1:08:53Jerry hit 275 on the season.
- 1:08:56San Francisco boy, the pitch curve ball is just outside, ball one, one and one.
- 1:09:02Coleman acts exactly as his mannerisms are almost a faithful reproduction of Frank Crissetti's.
- 1:09:12And yet, the one did not know the other.
- 1:09:15At a time in the formative stage when you develop those little mannerisms, you do have playing ball.
- 1:09:22The one-one delivery, slung on, hit foul down the first base line, a liner, strike two.
- 1:09:27One and two to count, the ball skipped up into the stands, into the boxes.
- 1:09:31And the usual scramble for a World Series souvenir.
- 1:09:35Another thing, Crissetti and Coleman both come from San Francisco,
- 1:09:39and for a long while even Jerry's own teammates thought that he'd patterned himself deliberately after Crissetti.
- 1:09:45The way he'd move his shoulders, the way he handled the ball, the way he got it away in a hurry.
- 1:09:50It turned out it was strictly coincidental.
- 1:09:54One and two to count on Coleman.
- 1:09:57Last of the third inning, nothing and nothing.
- 1:09:59Big Don Newcomb starts to work.
- 1:10:01Around comes the right arm, in comes the pitch, and it's over that outside corner for Carl strike three.
- 1:10:07Man, I mean he cut loose a fast ball.
- 1:10:09It looked like an aspirin tablet coming up there.
- 1:10:13And that is the fourth strikeout for Newcomb, and four out of the last five batters.
- 1:10:21Up comes Allie Reynolds.
- 1:10:26Allie Reynolds sitting at 221.
- 1:10:29If Newcomb continues at this pace, we'll be going to those World Series record books read.
- 1:10:38Newcomb's first pitch to the right hand batter.
- 1:10:40Reynolds swings and piles it off behind the plate.
- 1:10:42Strike one.
- 1:10:47Newcomb must be pretty quick because they're not looking for Reynolds to pull him.
- 1:10:51The outfield is shading toward right on Reynolds.
- 1:10:55Allie can swing the bat pretty well for pitcher.
- 1:10:59Jorgensen's hanging around in close at third near the line.
- 1:11:03Reese over towards second.
- 1:11:05Here's Newcomb's delivery.
- 1:11:07Reynolds swings and sends a fly ball down the left field line, and he did pull him.
- 1:11:10And Hermanski keeps getting it, and the ball is by him, and Reynolds is going to go for two.
- 1:11:14Here comes a throw, a beautiful throw, but Reynolds goes in standing up for the double.
- 1:11:17The ball gets by Robinson, but Gil Hodges is hanging up.
- 1:11:28Allie Reynolds caught him over-shifting for him, as they didn't figure Allie could pull Don.
- 1:11:34But he did.
- 1:11:35It was an ordinary fly ball that Hermanski could have put in his hip pocket had he been playing Reynolds to pull,
- 1:11:41but it was way over in the left center and couldn't catch up to it.
- 1:11:45So that's the Yankees' second hit of the ball game.
- 1:11:49Three in the game.
- 1:11:50The Dodgers have had one, and up is Phil Rizzuto, who fouled out in the first inning to Campanella.
- 1:11:54The pitch is swung on, fouled back to the screen, strike one.
- 1:11:58Last half of the third inning.
- 1:12:00One out, and Reynolds on second base.
- 1:12:07Outfield for Phil.
- 1:12:09Almost right away, Snyder just a step over into left center.
- 1:12:14Spyder Jorgensen hanging around him close at third.
- 1:12:17Now he backs up a step, not too deep.
- 1:12:19Don Ucomm stretches, pitches.
- 1:12:21Phil takes just off the outside corner, and the count is evened up at one and one.
- 1:12:26And so the crowd now has begun to warm a little bit to the situation.
- 1:12:31With the runner in scoring position.
- 1:12:33One ball, one strike, one out.
- 1:12:35No score. Last of the third inning.
- 1:12:37Ucomm has his sign from Campanella.
- 1:12:39He's ready to work.
- 1:12:40Here's his pitch, and it is swung on.
- 1:12:41A little pop-up hit back off first.
- 1:12:43There's Robinson going out on the grass and short right makes the catch,
- 1:12:46and Reynolds holds at second base.
- 1:12:48The Zudolips say pop-up back to first, which Jackie Robinson needs over to guess.
- 1:12:52And now Tommy Henrik is coming to bat with two down.
- 1:12:58Tommy was tossed out by Peewee Reese in the first inning.
- 1:13:03Yogi Berra moving up into the batter's circle with his shin guard still on with two down.
- 1:13:10He will not bat in this inning unless Henrik keeps the Yankee hopes alive.
- 1:13:14It's a nothing-nothing ball game.
- 1:13:15Last of the third.
- 1:13:18The Dodgers have had a runner as far as third.
- 1:13:21Hermanski in the second inning.
- 1:13:25Reynolds is the furthest the Yankee has been.
- 1:13:28He's on second base.
- 1:13:30Lindell single, but didn't get any further than that in the second inning.
- 1:13:34Ucomm with the stretch.
- 1:13:35Reynolds with the short lead.
- 1:13:37Here's your pitch.
- 1:13:38Takes inside for the ball.
- 1:13:40Roy Campanella, very agile back of that plate, moves his feet around beautifully.
- 1:13:45As soon as he catches that ball, he's got that arm cocked and ready to fire
- 1:13:48in the event a throw is necessary at any base.
- 1:13:52Nobody is darting around trying to hold Reynolds close because he hasn't had too big a lead.
- 1:13:57Two down.
- 1:13:58Stretch by Ucomm.
- 1:13:59Here's your pitch.
- 1:14:00Henrik swings and pops it up into the air.
- 1:14:02Toward third.
- 1:14:03Jorgensen getting out of the ball.
- 1:14:04And Henry sneaks him off and says he's got it and does, makes the catch for the out.
- 1:14:11No runs for the Yankees.
- 1:14:12One hit.
- 1:14:14No errors for Brooklyn.
- 1:14:16And one man left on for New York.
- 1:14:18I might add that at this time of year at Yankee Stadium when the sun is out brightly,
- 1:14:25particularly a little bit later on the ball game, the sun field, which is left field, is a murderous one.
- 1:14:30And also those who might be playing in center, if they're not accustomed to the situation
- 1:14:37here at Yankee Stadium, might find it difficult as Pete Reeser did in 1947.
- 1:14:41The sun is in behind home plate and it's a triple deck stadium.
- 1:14:47So a ball comes up out of home plate as it gets as high as the stadium, which is pretty high,
- 1:14:52and it has the stadium as a background.
- 1:14:54Then suddenly as it gets higher than the stadium, it's right into that sun and in a hurry.
- 1:14:59And so frequently it can give the out feelers trouble, even those who play against it all season long.
- 1:15:06Now at the end of three innings, the score, nothing and nothing.
- 1:15:11The Dodgers, no runs, one hit.
- 1:15:13No errors, two left on.
- 1:15:15The Yankees, no runs, two hits.
- 1:15:18No errors and two men left on base.
- 1:15:30This is Mal Allen with Red Barber, bringing you the 1949 World Series from Yankee Stadium
- 1:15:36with the best wishes and compliments of the makers of the Gillette Safety Racer Company.
- 1:15:40And we're ready now to move into the top half of the fifth inning of a scoreless ball game.
- 1:15:45It's Carl Ferrello leading off for the Dodgers.
- 1:15:49Gil Hodges and Roy Campanello to follow.
- 1:15:51Allie Reynolds pitching for New York.
- 1:15:54Ferrello walked in the second inning.
- 1:15:55Right hand batter.
- 1:15:56Reynolds into the windup.
- 1:15:57In comes the pitch.
- 1:15:58Swung on.
- 1:15:59A ground ball hit out towards second.
- 1:16:00Coleman gets it, goes through his legs and a right field for Nera.
- 1:16:03And Ferrello is on.
- 1:16:13Carl Ferrello hit a ground ball.
- 1:16:15An easy chance that Jerry Coleman allowed to go right through his legs into right field.
- 1:16:21Mapes backed up, fired to second.
- 1:16:23Ferrello holds it first.
- 1:16:24It's the first arrow of the ball game.
- 1:16:28And in this type of game, where two teams are battling it out tooth and nail on even
- 1:16:33terms, it takes the breaks to determine the ultimate winner.
- 1:16:37Perhaps that's it.
- 1:16:39Only time will tell.
- 1:16:40Meantime, here's Gil Hodges who bounced into a double play in the second inning.
- 1:16:44Right hand hitter.
- 1:16:45Reynolds pitches.
- 1:16:46Hodges swings and misses.
- 1:16:48Strike one.
- 1:16:52The Sun is playing hide and seek.
- 1:16:54And right now, it is hiding.
- 1:16:59They play Hodges full in center left.
- 1:17:01Mapes looking for him to slash to right.
- 1:17:03Johnson in close at third.
- 1:17:04Rizzuto moves in halfway at short.
- 1:17:06Three strikes to the left of the bag.
- 1:17:07Coleman in halfway almost.
- 1:17:09Three strikes to the right of the bag.
- 1:17:10The pitch is bonnie down toward third.
- 1:17:12There's Johnson up with the ball.
- 1:17:13Fires to Henrik in time.
- 1:17:15Rizzuto races over to cover third as Ferrello had taken his turn and third base was left uncovered.
- 1:17:20But when Phil raced over, Ferrello held up.
- 1:17:23So Hodges sacrifices.
- 1:17:25Ferrello to second is out.
- 1:17:27Johnson to Henrik.
- 1:17:30And Bert Schotton is playing it very close to the vest.
- 1:17:34Evidently feeling that as these two pitches thus far have performed, conceivably, one run could win it.
- 1:17:43Roy Campanella, right-hand hitter, steps up.
- 1:17:47And on the other hand, Bert might feel, well, here's the break.
- 1:17:50I'd like to try and capitalize on it as quickly as I might possibly can.
- 1:17:55Campanella applied to right field in the second inning.
- 1:17:57Right-hand hitter stockily built.
- 1:17:58Fell in close to the plate.
- 1:18:00Jack cocked off his right shoulder, the pitch right in there for a call strike.
- 1:18:04One out, a runner in scoring position.
- 1:18:07Nothing, nothing ball game.
- 1:18:09Top of the fifth inning.
- 1:18:13Outfield around toward left.
- 1:18:18This is a big man for Reynolds.
- 1:18:22Campanella bent at the knees, awaits the pitch.
- 1:18:23Here it is.
- 1:18:24Swung on, grounded foul.
- 1:18:26Off to the left of the plate.
- 1:18:28An inside pitch that Roy went for, hoping to pull sharply inside the bag, but he pulled it too much and he went foul off of the left of the Dodger dugout,
- 1:18:35which is located between third base and home plate.
- 1:18:40The Yankee dugout, located, of course, between home plate and first base.
- 1:18:45Two strike count on Roy.
- 1:18:48Nothing, nothing.
- 1:18:49Top half of the fifth inning.
- 1:18:57Rennels gets his sign from Barah, has the stretch.
- 1:19:03Brello moves off second.
- 1:19:05Here's the pitch.
- 1:19:06Campanella takes high and inside.
- 1:19:08Ball one, one and two.
- 1:19:13Clouds are creeping up overhead now.
- 1:19:15Ominous looking one.
- 1:19:19Bit of a haze over the field.
- 1:19:22Just a slight one.
- 1:19:25Rennels taking his time.
- 1:19:27Campanella, who stands deep in the batter's box, in close to the plate, with his right foot as his left foot, or forward foot, pulled slightly away.
- 1:19:34All right, here's your pitch.
- 1:19:36Curve is outside.
- 1:19:37Ball two, two, two.
- 1:19:39You've got Cal Hubbard calling balls and strikes of the American League.
- 1:19:41Beans are ridden.
- 1:19:43Of the National League umpiring at first base, Art Pastralla of the American League at second, and Lou Jordan of the National League at third, with your foul-line umpires.
- 1:19:50Ed Hurley of the American League in right, and George Barlow of the National League in left.
- 1:19:55Outfield toward left, four.
- 1:19:57Campanella, Johnson deep at third near the line.
- 1:19:59Rizzuto over toward second.
- 1:20:00Lot of room between third and short.
- 1:20:01Here's your pitch.
- 1:20:02Campanella takes high.
- 1:20:03Ball three, three and two.
- 1:20:04Very high.
- 1:20:05Full count now.
- 1:20:06Three and two.
- 1:20:08Jerry Coleman moves in from second base to the edge of the infield grass and hollers to Rennels.
- 1:20:15It was Jerry, of course, who got Rennels into this situation by allowing Perillo's routine bounder to go through his legs into right field for the first air of the ball game.
- 1:20:26Three balls, two strikes, and now Rennels has either got to come in there with the pitch or put the runner on it first.
- 1:20:32Of course, he makes it too good.
- 1:20:33Mr. Campanella can blast it somewhere.
- 1:20:38Rennels shakes off the sign, then takes a little too much time, and Campanella steps out on him very quickly.
- 1:20:45Little pitching tricks.
- 1:20:47All of them used to try to get a batter a little bit on edge, a little more on edge than he already is.
- 1:20:53Full count.
- 1:20:54Three and two.
- 1:20:55The stretch.
- 1:20:56Perillo moves off second.
- 1:20:57In comes the pitch.
- 1:20:58Campanella takes high and inside.
- 1:20:59He walks, and they're runners on first and second, one out.
- 1:21:02And Don Newcomb coming to bat.
- 1:21:07An error and a walk.
- 1:21:10With a sacrifice in between.
- 1:21:13Have put two Dodgers on, first and second, one away.
- 1:21:17Newcomb is tossed out by Rizzuto in the third inning.
- 1:21:24If those of you like to figure baseball close, configure that Campanella's walk was, of course, the direct result of the error made by Coleman.
- 1:21:32And the sacrifice that moved Perillo, who was safe on the air, to second because he had to work very carefully on Campanella
- 1:21:38for fear that he might get the base hit that would drive in the run and break the tie.
- 1:21:41Newcomb, powerful left-hand hitter, up, takes the pitch in there for a called strike.
- 1:21:45When I say he's powerful, he is that.
- 1:21:47Red, they tell me in the celebration at the, in the clubhouse in Philadelphia on Sunday that he picked up a couple of the Dodgers and held them at arm's length.
- 1:21:57Is that true?
- 1:21:58Well, I think he had managed a shot in both arms, Mel.
- 1:22:02Perillo moves off second. Campanella off first, the pitch. Newcomb takes high and outside, change up.
- 1:22:08And the count is one and one.
- 1:22:10And now here's Jake Pitler starting in toward the plate.
- 1:22:13I thought he was going to talk to Newcomb, but it was a glove.
- 1:22:17Newcomb's glove that he had dropped just outside the third baseline.
- 1:22:20Too close to the line in Milton Stock, I should have said.
- 1:22:23Just simply tossed a little further away.
- 1:22:26One ball, one strike, one out. Don Newcomb, the batter.
- 1:22:30Carl Perillo is on second base. Roy Campanella on first.
- 1:22:34And one away, scoreless ballgame, top of the fifth. On deck is Peewee Reese, the stretch by Reynolds.
- 1:22:40Here's the pitch. Newcomb takes a curve that's just outside.
- 1:22:43Ball two, two and one.
- 1:22:45Very close, but not there, says Cal Hubbard.
- 1:22:54Bill Johnson's in close at third, about five feet off third baseline.
- 1:22:57Rizzuto in three, four steps.
- 1:22:59And three strikes to the left of second. Jerry Coleman, four strikes to the right.
- 1:23:03Here's your pitch. Newcomb swings and he misses. Strike two. He tried to hold up at a fastball.
- 1:23:08It might or might not have been just above the shoulders.
- 1:23:14In other words, it might or might not have been called a ball. It was very close.
- 1:23:20It's a 2-2 count on Newcomb.
- 1:23:25Nothing, nothing to score. Top of the fifth inning.
- 1:23:31Reynolds getting ready. Perillo on second. Campanella on first lead. Here's the pitch.
- 1:23:36Fastball swung on him. Missed. Strike three. He fired a fast one by Newcomb.
- 1:23:41And there's two downs.
- 1:23:43Coming up to bat, one of your great ball players of the day and a great guy when the chips are down.
- 1:23:53Peewee Reese, grounded out through Henrik in the first inning.
- 1:23:57Bunny Dunn was tossed out by Billy Johnson in the third inning.
- 1:24:04That's only the second strikeout for Reynolds, who has walked three.
- 1:24:14And Peewee steps in. Bat's on right-handed. Perillo on second. Campanella on first. Two down.
- 1:24:20Fifth inning, no score. Reynolds ready.
- 1:24:23Here's the pitch. Reese swings and turns a boundary to Johnson.
- 1:24:26Grant's a two-hop. Steps on third for the force-out on Perillo and Reynolds pitches out of the jam.
- 1:24:35No runs, no hits. One error and two men left on.
- 1:24:41And the score at the end of four and a half innings, nothing and nothing.
- 1:24:48To soften your whiskers thoroughly for slick-looking, comfortable shaves and destroy infectious germs at the same time,
- 1:24:54use Gillette shaving cream, lather or brushless, containing K-34.
- 1:24:59This amazing facial antiseptic gives valuable protection against unsightly skin conditions caused by dangerous bacteria.
- 1:25:06K-34 does what no amount of scrubbing with ordinary soap and water can accomplish.
- 1:25:11It actually destroys up to 99 percent of all bacteria on the skin and beneath its outer layers.
- 1:25:17What's more, the bacteria count stays down. The protection lasts.
- 1:25:21Oh yes, and another thing. You'll find that Gillette shaving creams are exceptionally fast-acting beard softeners
- 1:25:27and mighty kinds of sensitive skin.
- 1:25:30So folks, enjoy the valuable protection of K-34 and get smoother, easier shaves as well.
- 1:25:37Use Gillette shaving cream, lather or brushless.
- 1:25:41And now, ladies and gentlemen, with a great deal of pleasure,
- 1:25:45I introduce to you my coworker on this broadcast of the World Series,
- 1:25:51a fellow who has established a reputation in sports broadcasting second to none
- 1:25:56and who has been broadcasting World Series since 1935, so he really knows what it's all about, the old redhead, Red Barber.
- 1:26:03Thank you, Mayor. Newcomb makes his first pitch last at the fifth inning, a curve ball over for a called strike
- 1:26:07to Billy Johnson, stocky right hand hitting third base into the anchors.
- 1:26:10Very kind words, Mayor, and I might say that there have been three fellows pitching so far.
- 1:26:14Newcomb, Reynolds and you. Nice to be with you.
- 1:26:17Nice to be back with Jimmy Britt, who's doing the television for Gillette.
- 1:26:22Here is Newcomb pitching a curve on the outside for a called second strike.
- 1:26:26He's quickly gone ahead of Johnson. He struck him out the second inning.
- 1:26:31Also for our Gillette broadcast, Rini Canazares is back on the job.
- 1:26:36Of course, I don't know what he's saying because he's doing it in Spanish.
- 1:26:40These broadcasts go all over the world. Hotfield deep, shaded toward left, Johnson,
- 1:26:46a powerful hitter when he hits one, crouches, swings and misses on the curve on the outside, a sharp curve,
- 1:26:51and on three pitches he's retired for the second time on strikes.
- 1:26:54Five strikeouts for Newcomb.
- 1:26:57The story so far today is simply power pitching. Newcomb and Reynolds,
- 1:27:03they are both hard ball pitchers with sharp curves. They throw their curve balls hard.
- 1:27:08They only let up once in a while. They don't monkey with such stuff as knuckle balls or screw balls.
- 1:27:13They are orthodox pitchers and both of them strong and both of them willing, and both of them ready.
- 1:27:19Now Cliff Maipes, the tall left-hand hitting rookie right fielder, leaning in, swings and nubs one foul,
- 1:27:26back of first base on the ground. Bill Dickey, familiar figure at Yankee Stadium, scoops up the ball, throws it out.
- 1:27:33For the Brooklyn Carbohydro, the game stands no score. Newcomb on the mound, Campanella,
- 1:27:39this is battery mate, back at the plate, Hodges at first, Robinson at second, Reese at short, and Johnny Jorgensen at third.
- 1:27:45The outfield is Hermanski on left, the inside of field is now to the right field, Ferrello.
- 1:27:49The defense is toward right, especially in the outfield. Maipes swings as a foul in the third base stands, not a play.
- 1:27:55No balls, two strikes.
- 1:27:58Quite a scramble as that ball comes out of the upper deck, down below in the lower boxes.
- 1:28:07I noticed something here at Yankee Stadium today I've never seen in the World Series before.
- 1:28:11The Yankees, who of course have the great championship record and the great World Series record,
- 1:28:15have gone back into their archives and have pulled out all their World Championship and their League Championship banners
- 1:28:23and they have them all around the stadium and it's an impressive scene.
- 1:28:27The next pitcher is a fastball low outside to Maipes, right-hand pitcher, Don Newcomb, who pitches with a very easy move.
- 1:28:35He's a big man. There are two big men right down there that played umpire Cal Hubbard, who is even bigger.
- 1:28:42And these are two big men who move very gracefully. They can move just as quickly as the smaller fellows.
- 1:28:49Newcomb ready to pitch one and two does. Maipes swings it and hits the foul down on the ground.
- 1:28:53It bounces up dead and Maipes himself grabs it, hands it to Campanella.
- 1:28:57It's examined routinely by umpire Hubbard and the ball left in play.
- 1:29:03One man out, nobody on, last of the fifth inning. The pitching has predominated.
- 1:29:08The Dodgers have had more scoring opportunities.
- 1:29:12The Yankees have had one man get off.
- 1:29:14Brookton had quite a few. One and two pitch, low inside the ball too.
- 1:29:18The Dodgers have had, the Yankees have had two men, two men on.
- 1:29:24The Dodgers have had five. One hit, three walks, and a narrow.
- 1:29:31The Yankees two, the Dodgers five. Brookton's had men twice reach second base with one out.
- 1:29:36One man reach second base, nobody out.
- 1:29:38Two-two pitch to Maipes, swung on and missed by three.
- 1:29:40Fastball on the knees when the outside strikes him out for the second time.
- 1:29:45Six strikeouts for Newcomb.
- 1:29:48And Jerry Coleman who looked at a called third strike in the third inning.
- 1:29:55He works well upon the handle of that bat.
- 1:29:57He chokes his bat far more than any other player in the series.
- 1:30:00He's a slender hitter.
- 1:30:03Likes to punch that ball and it's obvious by the way he swings.
- 1:30:06That favorite target of his is to take a shot at right field.
- 1:30:12He realizes he does not have the physical strength to overpower the ball,
- 1:30:16so he tries to play his game according to his own physique of timing the ball.
- 1:30:21Fastball through there, called strike.
- 1:30:23Big Hubbard throws that right ham of his high in the air.
- 1:30:26Strike one.
- 1:30:29Campanella, stocky, and a very steady target back at the plate.
- 1:30:35Settles down now to give the sign.
- 1:30:37When Roy comes up after giving the sign, he gives the pitcher four points.
- 1:30:40His two knees and his catcher's mitt, which is not held back at the plate,
- 1:30:44but to one side and his right hand to the other.
- 1:30:46Newcomb pitches a curve low outside, one and one.
- 1:30:49One ball, one strike.
- 1:30:52Neither Mel nor I have made very much conversation with you this afternoon
- 1:30:56about the crowd because just everybody's here at the stadium will hold.
- 1:31:00Everybody knew that.
- 1:31:01That was going to scramble for seats.
- 1:31:04It was rather quiet because there just weren't any.
- 1:31:11One ball, one strike.
- 1:31:12There's a foul ball off.
- 1:31:15See, at the stadium, season seat holders will hold boxes all season long.
- 1:31:21They have their boxes for the World Series,
- 1:31:23plus the option of purchasing the same number of seats again in the reserve role.
- 1:31:28And, of course, when you realize the baseball requirements that have to be met
- 1:31:32for all the major league teams and the two league offices and the commissioner's office,
- 1:31:37well, that means that seat situation,
- 1:31:40especially where you have the season ticket holders on it, moves pretty routinely.
- 1:31:49One ball, two strikes, two men out, no score, nobody on, last to the fifth.
- 1:31:53Newcomb's pitch low outside.
- 1:31:55Coleman just did check himself in time.
- 1:32:01The crowd has not had occasion for a real good bellow outside of their salute to DiMaggio
- 1:32:06when he stepped in to be the first hitter in the last of the second inning.
- 1:32:09There is no background.
- 1:32:11In back of center field, as the rule, there's a canvas screen.
- 1:32:14And in the regular season, they have the screen up,
- 1:32:16and therefore there are no bleacher rights sitting out there in dead center field.
- 1:32:20But now for the World Series, the bleachers are completely jammed, no screen.
- 1:32:24Newcomb steps to the back of the mound, takes a hanker, mops his face.
- 1:32:29It's a shirt sleeve afternoon, especially out in the bleachers.
- 1:32:36After rain early this morning, the day became muggy,
- 1:32:39and right now it is hot and humid, especially for this time of the year.
- 1:32:44And the sun comes and the sun goes.
- 1:32:46Right now the sun is out brightly, especially for the left and center fielders.
- 1:32:49They're in sun.
- 1:32:50Newcomb pitches again due to strike three, swinging a sharp curve ball.
- 1:32:54Couldn't even set himself to swing hard at seven strikeouts for Big Newcomb.
- 1:32:59So he has struck out now Johnson twice, Maked twice, and Coleman twice at six.
- 1:33:07His seventh is an adieu.
- 1:33:10That's the second time he has struck out the side.
- 1:33:13So at the end of five innings, we'll check out totals.
- 1:33:16No runs, one hit, and no errors for the Dodgers.
- 1:33:19No runs, two hits, and one error for the Yankees.
- 1:33:22Reynolds, a strong arm right-hander, who has not been as,
- 1:33:26should we say, as brilliantly as impressive as far as strikeouts are concerned as Newcomb,
- 1:33:30but in the business that counts, he has been very impressive.
- 1:33:34He has seen to it that there has been no scoring.
- 1:33:40No scoring at all, and that's what the payoff on in this business,
- 1:33:43The matter of runs.
- 1:33:47Thirty cents.
- 1:33:51Reynolds has had to pitch out of three serious threats.
- 1:33:54In the first inning, there was a slight misjudgment on a ball drilled into left center field by Jorgensen,
- 1:33:59The misjudgment on the part of left fielder Lindell,
- 1:34:02and so there was Johnny Jorgensen here at the bell that went out at second base.
- 1:34:06Reynolds pitched out of that.
- 1:34:08In the second inning, he walked the first two,
- 1:34:10which is always an unsettling thing for a pitcher at most any time,
- 1:34:13and then he saw that Hodges did not sacrifice the ball on him,
- 1:34:18got him to hit into a double floor, in which he himself started it.
- 1:34:21In the fifth inning, as Mel told you, the error by Coleman might have been unsettling,
- 1:34:26then came the sacrifice, they walked the Campanella,
- 1:34:29but he struck out Newcomb, got Reese on the force.
- 1:34:32So, here we go, into the sixth inning, no score.
- 1:34:37Johnny Jorgensen has Brooklyn's one hit.
- 1:34:40Left hand batter, only weighs about 150 pounds.
- 1:34:43He'll weigh less than any player in the World Series.
- 1:34:46Right field toward right, right hand to Reynolds pitches,
- 1:34:49an overhand curve that's good for a call strike.
- 1:34:52Reynolds on the mound and better with the two on back of the plate.
- 1:34:55Tammy Henrik at first base, Jerry Coleman at second.
- 1:34:58The shortstop is Phil Rizzuto on the third base in Billy Johnson.
- 1:35:01Lindell in left field, the great DiMaggio is in center.
- 1:35:04Right field, Clif Mates.
- 1:35:07Pitch, fastball swung on, driven to right field corner.
- 1:35:10It is just fouled, into the stand, just fouled.
- 1:35:15No question about it, three umpires right on the line.
- 1:35:18That ball stands right at that point,
- 1:35:20I know the home plate in the other part of Yankee Stadium, 296 feet.
- 1:35:24That ball went foul by about a yard.
- 1:35:26But it's a very tough angle for an umpire to have to rule,
- 1:35:29especially if he's back to the plate.
- 1:35:31Not quite as tough as he's at first,
- 1:35:33but it's no problem at all if an umpire is in the right field corner.
- 1:35:36And that is where umpire Hurley was.
- 1:35:40So you have right on the line all three of them,
- 1:35:42Hobbit back to the plate, Reardon at first, and Hurley in the right field corner.
- 1:35:46Our commissioner channel is innovation.
- 1:35:48Taking the older umpires and putting them in the foul corners
- 1:35:51is a wonderful efficiency asset.
- 1:35:53Jorgensen takes a high inside fastball.
- 1:35:55The crowd roared simply because Berra had to reach up to pull it down.
- 1:36:01One ball, a few strikes.
- 1:36:05Jorgensen first up in the sixth inning, no score.
- 1:36:09Gillette, very privileged to bring you these broadcasts of these great events.
- 1:36:14This is the 11th straight World Series for Gillette.
- 1:36:17Fastball low outside.
- 1:36:19Ball two, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:36:24Jorgensen steps out, hits the soles of his shoes,
- 1:36:28to the heavy end of the bat, knocking a little play out.
- 1:36:34Jorgensen chokes that stick about an inch.
- 1:36:36An open stance, right hand to Reynolds pitches.
- 1:36:38Five, four, ball three.
- 1:36:40Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:36:43Meldon Start coaching in third.
- 1:36:45Jake Pitlett first.
- 1:36:48Jorgensen, who is hitting second on the batting card,
- 1:36:51is leading off here in the sixth inning.
- 1:36:52Snyder on deck, then Robinson.
- 1:36:57Tough ball game.
- 1:36:58Big crowd just waiting for something to break.
- 1:37:00Three, two, pitch.
- 1:37:01Ball four.
- 1:37:02Joe Jorgensen closes the bat away.
- 1:37:05And this is base on balls number four given up by Reynolds.
- 1:37:08Ducum has not walked any one.
- 1:37:10So Jorgensen opens up the inning.
- 1:37:12And the Dodgers have now begun their fourth scoring thrust.
- 1:37:17But the first three were negated by Reynolds,
- 1:37:20who has pitched very stoutly in the clutches.
- 1:37:25Duke Snyder, who is off for two, who had to count his way,
- 1:37:29three, one in the first inning, and then swung prodigiously at two fastballs,
- 1:37:33as Mel pointed out to you,
- 1:37:36sets to bump and takes a curve that is in under the shoulders on the outside.
- 1:37:39All strikes.
- 1:37:41Snyder drew back from that thinking that he wouldn't be in the strike zone,
- 1:37:43but the curve ball of Reynolds, which is a good one,
- 1:37:45ducked down and in there and got it.
- 1:37:50Nobody out, no score.
- 1:37:53Henrik holding first base tightly.
- 1:37:55Reynolds has to come to his set position now with a man on it first behind him.
- 1:37:58He's a right-hand pitcher.
- 1:38:01Nobody throwing in the anky-both end.
- 1:38:03Fred Sanford was up in the second inning.
- 1:38:06Now they walk the first two men.
- 1:38:11Night of crotchers, the pitch is swung on and missed.
- 1:38:13Strike two with a curve ball that seemed to be under the waistline and over.
- 1:38:22Nothing in two.
- 1:38:26Reynolds is a very solid fellow, big through the chest, shoulders, and hips.
- 1:38:37In field, upper step, outfield, over shifted into right.
- 1:38:41The pitch, Snyder, the left-hand hitter to pull, swings and misses.
- 1:38:43Strike three.
- 1:38:49That for Reynolds gives him three strikeouts, and we have 10 strikeouts so far.
- 1:38:53Newcomb has struck out seven.
- 1:38:55So it continues to be so far pitching, hand power pitching.
- 1:38:59In other words, these two fellows are not finessing anybody.
- 1:39:01They're just throwing it past him.
- 1:39:03Fast ball and curve.
- 1:39:07Newcomb hasn't fooled with a change of face since Lindell singled off of it in the second inning.
- 1:39:11And Reynolds has only thrown one real change of face, and that was high outside for a ball.
- 1:39:16Jackie Robinson to win the batting title, beating Stan Musial out by three points.
- 1:39:220-2 today, right-hand hitter.
- 1:39:25Takes a curve that is low, too low, all-1.
- 1:39:30Robinson in the first inning, a fly ball to Mapes and Wrightfield.
- 1:39:33And in the fourth inning, he was thrown out, third baseman Johnson to first baseman Tommy Henry.
- 1:39:37Henry continues holding first base against Jorgensen.
- 1:39:40Jorgensen is not too much of a running threat as far as the steal is concerned.
- 1:39:44He only stole one base in the punter campaign, and that was the last day of the season.
- 1:39:48Throw to first, not in time.
- 1:39:50Jorgensen thought the throw would be closer than it was and dove back in with his hands.
- 1:39:58Robinson, holes that club down by the end.
- 1:40:01Real put on the back line of the box, slightly open stance, bend at the knees.
- 1:40:05The pitch, too low, and it is ball two.
- 1:40:09Reynolds has a lot up off of his fast ball, which has a tennis at his sink.
- 1:40:15And that is what he threw just now to Jack.
- 1:40:20A pitcher such as Reynolds, a pitcher such as Newcomb, is easy for a broadcaster to read.
- 1:40:25He is tough for a hitter, of course. The hitter is only 60 feet away.
- 1:40:30But now, when Eddie Lofat pitches, it is going to be something to see what he is throwing all the time.
- 1:40:34He throws everything. Now goes Jorgensen, Robinson swings and fouls it off on a hit-and-run play.
- 1:40:38Foul ball in the lost end behind first.
- 1:40:42And that was a fast ball that Reynolds had thrown in there on Jack's hands.
- 1:40:46Practically had it passed it. All right, two balls, one strike.
- 1:40:50The sun is now out steadily. The skies are clear. They are blue and white up above.
- 1:40:55Two innings ago, they were getting pretty leaden, pretty threatening.
- 1:40:59The weather forecast for the day as well as for tomorrow on the second.
- 1:41:04It is the best way we can read it.
- 1:41:06It is a lot of two-bit words, where as is, if as is.
- 1:41:09Throw to first, not in time.
- 1:41:11Henrik had to lean off the bag to a second base, pull it in.
- 1:41:18Two balls, one strike.
- 1:41:22Robbie waiting at the plate.
- 1:41:24The plate hit-and-run on the last pitch. We will see what they do now.
- 1:41:27Jorgensen holds. The pitch is thrown and foul back.
- 1:41:30Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:41:32The Dodgers are not running, but Robinson is up there hitting as he pleases.
- 1:41:36And of course, he is up there probably hitting as he pleases now.
- 1:41:39They should decide to play hit-and-run.
- 1:41:43Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:41:46One away.
- 1:41:48Reynolds decides to soon pitch another baseball, and that is agreeable.
- 1:41:52We will play it on Parkale Hubbard, who makes the exchange.
- 1:41:56Now Alley turns his back on the plate, bends off the rubber, rubbing up the ball.
- 1:42:08Center fielder of the Magyar is bearded over toward left center.
- 1:42:11Left and right fielder straight away on Robinson.
- 1:42:14In field is up a couple of steps hoping for the DP.
- 1:42:17The Yankees have their games only double fly.
- 1:42:19Got that in the second inning, it took Reynolds out of a hole.
- 1:42:22They're 2-2 pitch. Curve inside of the knees, and Jack took it. All three.
- 1:42:27Now the Dodgers may elect to run.
- 1:42:313-2. Yogi Berra, I noticed in the papers, says that he's got a secret weapon now.
- 1:42:41He defies the Dodgers' run on him this year as they did two years ago.
- 1:42:45Of course, one thing, Berra has had two more years experience, and this year he's had a chance to have some very fine catching points given to him by Bill Dickey.
- 1:42:54Now let's see. The 3-2 pitch, Jorgensen goes. Robinson swings, goes above the left center. The Magyar's got to go a long way.
- 1:43:01He's going, and he makes the dab of it. And deep cuts on the field.
- 1:43:04Jorgensen, who at round the second, is on his way back. The first relay from Rizzuto is not in time.
- 1:43:20That is the one hard-hipped ball that has performed the game. Robinson drove on a long way to that set of field, but it's 457 feet to the barrier out there,
- 1:43:31and the Magyar, one of the great outfielders of all time, very gracefully, just turned and went and got it.
- 1:43:36It was hit a long way, but Joe can go a long way, and one of the reasons for his greatness is he makes it look easy.
- 1:43:43Jorgensen had already gotten on the third base out at second, and yet got back to first ahead of a good relay by Rizzuto.
- 1:43:50That tells you how far the ball was hit to the left center. So DiMaggio comes up with the first real outfield catch.
- 1:43:55It's the first time that an outfielder has been severely challenged. So Robinson hits one, and DiMaggio says, that's just another out.
- 1:44:04Okay, two go on, and the batter is Gene Hermanski. 0-1. Base one ball is in second inning.
- 1:44:09Fly ball to right field. In the fourth, takes a ball, strike at the knees, and it is nothing in one.
- 1:44:14No ball, one strike. The infield, with the exception of third base, is completely in shadow.
- 1:44:20Part of shortstop is in shadow. All the right field is in shadow. Center field and left field are in sun.
- 1:44:28Left field is the sun garden here at the stadium, not right field.
- 1:44:32Hermanski swings and doesn't get it. Went up to, sort of like a slider or a hard curve, maybe a lead-up curve in by the hands.
- 1:44:43Double-halls, two strikes. When Reynolds gets men on, then he shows you something. It's been the pattern so far today.
- 1:44:55Jorgensen walks, open the sixth inning, and he's still layup. It was quite a catch by DiMaggio.
- 1:45:03Reynolds steps off first base.
- 1:45:11Show you the tension that's in this game on every pitch. When Reynolds stepped off the mound, DiMaggio made a complete circle in center.
- 1:45:17Throw, turner missed her ball. So, that was a thing that turned off. A fourth strike out.
- 1:45:25And at the end of five and a half innings, the score is still Brooklyn nothing and New York nothing.
- 1:45:36If you asked Sid Gordon, the famous third baseman of the New York Giants, who by the way is right here with me,
- 1:45:42he'd tell you that the Gillette Super Speed Razor is a honey. Am I right, Sid?
- 1:45:47That's right, Red. It's the sweetest shaving razor I ever used and the most convenient.
- 1:45:53But Sid, what do you like best about it?
- 1:45:55Everything. It never jams or clogs. You change blades quickly and it's no trouble to clean.
- 1:46:02Ever used a Gillette Razor before?
- 1:46:04Yes, and every other kind too, but never one like this.
- 1:46:08Man, the Gillette Super Speed Razor is the easiest shaving and handiest razor you can imagine.
- 1:46:14Yes, and listen to this. You get it in a handsome, serviceable styrene travel case with a 10 blade Gillette dispenser.
- 1:46:21A big dollar, 75 value for only a dollar. Ask for the new Gillette Super Speed Razor set at any convenience store.
- 1:46:33Well, Sid, while we've got you here, what about this pitching? Would you like to be hitting against it?
- 1:46:38Well, I'd certainly like to be playing in this ball game, but I'll say one thing, for both pitchers, they've really got it today.
- 1:46:45Newcomen's as fast as I've ever seen them while I was hitting against them.
- 1:46:50Of course, I've never hit against Reynolds and he certainly looks like he's got real good stuff today.
- 1:46:55Looks like it's going to be the team that gets the first break who's going to win this ball game.
- 1:47:00Thanks a lot, Sid. Now let's see about the last of the sixth inning.
- 1:47:03First up for the Yankees is pitcher Reynolds who has a two base hit to his credit, right hand batter.
- 1:47:07Months up to a third base and fouls it off. He was running to try and add another base hit to the kitty.
- 1:47:13So Reynolds, who is a dominant figure, he and Newcomen so far are completely overshadowing the rest of the story.
- 1:47:20Reynolds, who is Mel Allen, told you in the third inning, with the defense pulled or backed into right field,
- 1:47:26pulled one in the left field corner, a fly ball that was in there for two bases.
- 1:47:30And he is the only Yankee who has reached second base safely.
- 1:47:33And he is the last one to get on. Newcomen's retired everybody since that double with one out in the third inning.
- 1:47:38Right hand hitter, Don Rez back, fouls it, clung on, hits sharply.
- 1:47:42Two between third and fourth base hit to Rez.
- 1:47:45That's a five single through between third base and third base and a shortstop race.
- 1:47:57So three hits for the Yankees, out which pitcher Reynolds has gotten the last two.
- 1:48:05So the Yankee offense has been Lindell with a single with one out in the second inning, Reynolds a double with one out in the third,
- 1:48:11and now Reynolds a single opening up matters here in the last of the sixth inning.
- 1:48:16So a race comes over from short.
- 1:48:17The high just can go from first.
- 1:48:19They talk to Big Newcomen on the mound for the moment.
- 1:48:21Dodgers of course have to drink their defense now ready for the punt in one of the most powerful punters in the game.
- 1:48:27Phil Rizzuto, the little leadoff man, is now up.
- 1:48:32Going soon in close from third.
- 1:48:33Here's the pitch, and it's a pitch out.
- 1:48:35Throw down the first base and Reynolds is back.
- 1:48:37Robinson, the second baseman, came in to take the throw.
- 1:48:41That's a play that the Dodgers use upon occasion.
- 1:48:43Reynolds just did get back dicky at the first base.
- 1:48:45Coach goes over and says, now listen, Ali, I'm going to put a rope on you.
- 1:48:51That's a play that has been used all through the years in which there's an obvious punt situation.
- 1:48:56The pitcher pitches out to the right hand hitter, and the first baseman as the decoy runs up toward the plate.
- 1:49:02And the second baseman tries to sneak in first.
- 1:49:04Pitch in there for a call strike, one ball, one strike.
- 1:49:09One and one.
- 1:49:12I do this up close.
- 1:49:14There's something to Newcomb.
- 1:49:17We'll know in a moment what managed to case this thing.
- 1:49:20He's got up his sleeve.
- 1:49:25Throw, munted, foul.
- 1:49:27And Rizzuto, who is not only an excellent punter, but he covers up until the last split second that he's going to punt.
- 1:49:35Because he doesn't run his right hand out along the bowl of the bat and then drop the bat on the ball.
- 1:49:41He punts with merely a flick of the wrist so he can wait until the pitcher's practically on top of him,
- 1:49:46which is not calculated to make third baseman sleep too soundly.
- 1:49:51Anyhow, he punted that one.
- 1:49:53So the infield now most double play depth, one ball, two strikes.
- 1:49:58The penalty is rather high for bunting foul with two strikes on you.
- 1:50:01Rizzuto struck out.
- 1:50:02Throw, curve on the outside, four ball, two.
- 1:50:05No score.
- 1:50:06And the Yankees hoping to exploit the second base hit of Randall's now into something here in the last half, the sixth inning.
- 1:50:17I just hold him first, shorten the lead of the runner.
- 1:50:20The 2-2 pitch, thrown on, hit down the third, jogs up with a throw to second to Robinson.
- 1:50:24The throw on the first base is not in time at first.
- 1:50:28First play at second, and Randall really went in there with a rolling slide that would do credit to any ball player or any football player.
- 1:50:37Randall's in that ball game there.
- 1:50:38He goes back into the Yankee bench, which is on the first base side of things.
- 1:50:42He's all covered with dirt.
- 1:50:44He stayed in there hard.
- 1:50:45He made Robinson get off second base, and Randall broke up the double play.
- 1:50:49In other words, he did not allow Robinson to set and pivot at second.
- 1:50:54He made him get off the bag and then throw.
- 1:50:57And Rizzuto, who's fast, beat the relay.
- 1:51:00Short to fourth play at second, on Randall.
- 1:51:03Third base from Johnson, second base from Robinson, and the batter now is Tommy Henry, who is off for two.
- 1:51:08The 10 hit on the dangerous one.
- 1:51:12Now big newcomer, ready?
- 1:51:14Henry swings a five-ball deep into the left center field.
- 1:51:16Slider's got a long way to go.
- 1:51:18He's under it.
- 1:51:19He's got it.
- 1:51:21So we have two center fielders who can really go get him.
- 1:51:25DiMaggio and this young fellow, Smada, finishing out his first full year in the major.
- 1:51:31So Henry hit one, but it is out number two.
- 1:51:35So that sort of evened up things.
- 1:51:37Robinson belted one into DiMaggio, went and took it in the upper part of the sixth inning.
- 1:51:45Very dangerous batter, Yogi Berra.
- 1:51:50He really took his favorite ball player to heart when he was a kid down in St. Louis.
- 1:51:55His heart went out to Joe Medwick back in that era.
- 1:51:59And Medwick, of course, admittedly and still is probably the best bad ball hitter baseball ever saw.
- 1:52:04Well, Berra is heir apparent to that crowd.
- 1:52:07In other words, he's dangerous because he will hit a pitcher trying to waste on him even.
- 1:52:11And pitchers say, well, how do you pitch to a fellow like that?
- 1:52:18Pursuit off first, left to go.
- 1:52:20He's the Yankees leading base dealer.
- 1:52:21The pitch to Berra swung on and bowled back.
- 1:52:24Strike one.
- 1:52:28Over all in one strike.
- 1:52:29No score.
- 1:52:30Two men out.
- 1:52:39Big Newcomb for the first time being duly deliberate.
- 1:52:45He'd been pitching steadily without wasting any time between deliveries.
- 1:52:48Works as a pitch out, but Rizzuto wasn't going.
- 1:52:53Campanello back at the plate had called for a pitch out, and with Berra, that meant the ball to be delivered on the third base side.
- 1:53:00But little Phil was staying home.
- 1:53:03Hodges holding first base against him.
- 1:53:05The umpire is beans ridden.
- 1:53:08One ball, one strike.
- 1:53:10Two men on.
- 1:53:11Throw.
- 1:53:12Pass ball high outside.
- 1:53:13Throw down to first.
- 1:53:14Not in time again.
- 1:53:19Two men on.
- 1:53:20What Campanello is doing, the lingo of the trade, he's trying to help his pitcher.
- 1:53:26He throws to first.
- 1:53:27Not only is when the catcher does everything, he's trying to pick a man off, but he's trying to cut down his lead.
- 1:53:32Give the pitcher a little bit more leeway out there on the mound.
- 1:53:38Throw to first, not in time, Rizzuto back.
- 1:53:41Newcomb is not only young in years, but he's young in organized baseball, and he's finishing his rookie year.
- 1:53:49He's not the most polished pitcher in the world.
- 1:53:51Throws to first, and Rizzuto has to dive back.
- 1:53:56Two balls, one strike.
- 1:53:58Our little Phil has got that home white Yankee uniform all must up, Ian Reynolds.
- 1:54:05The Dodgers are wearing slate gray, bluish-tinged road suits.
- 1:54:10In fact, Brooklyn's uniform is brand new.
- 1:54:12They never had them on until they put them on for the day.
- 1:54:15And Mel tells me the Yankees have got brand new suits too.
- 1:54:17Well, everything for the big day.
- 1:54:19The 2-1 pitchers, Udohol strike two swinging to the curve at the plate.
- 1:54:25Those wrists of Verro's are really impressive.
- 1:54:29He too waits until that pitch is practically on top of him, and then lets go.
- 1:54:34Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:54:41Outfield very much toward right.
- 1:54:43Yogi pulls in that direction, no score.
- 1:54:47Two-two pitch, there's a high foul ball up and back right behind us.
- 1:54:55Still two and two.
- 1:54:58You survive baseball, as we can brought up the third and parcal Hubbard.
- 1:55:03It was a very impressive and a thoughtful gesture that at the invitation of Commissioner A.B. Chandler,
- 1:55:10that the nine-year-old kid Bruce Howard, who has gotten over infantile paralysis,
- 1:55:15which hit him in July of this summer, was the guest of commission throughout the first ball.
- 1:55:20Throw the first, not in time.
- 1:55:23And it was a thing which Mayor O'Dwyer, who usually throws out the first ball,
- 1:55:28that is the mayor does, is very happy to step aside for the juncture to do.
- 1:55:31Two-two pitch, swung and missed, great foul ball on the outside, ball strikes out.
- 1:55:36So Newcomb has to fidget a little bit, but he pitches right along, records his eighth strike out.
- 1:55:43And at the end of six innings, we'll check our totals.
- 1:55:47No runs, one hit. That was the first inning double by Jorgensen and no errors for the Dodgers.
- 1:55:53For the Yankees, no runs, three hits, two of them by Reynolds.
- 1:55:56And for New York, one error.
- 1:56:00Now we'll pause ten seconds for station identification.
- 1:56:03This is the Mutual Broadcasting System.
- 1:56:07WOR and WORFM, your World Series stations in New York.
- 1:56:15Here we are at Yankee Stadium, moving into the seventh inning,
- 1:56:22and everything is getting bigger and bigger and tenser and tenser and more and more important.
- 1:56:27Reynolds and Newcomb are the two key figures until somebody else moves in.
- 1:56:34Mel, take this microphone over for a second, speaking about tension.
- 1:56:40How about it here Saturday and Sunday when the Yankees came through with a Red Sox?
- 1:56:45Well, you had tension at the very highest peak, Red.
- 1:56:48You spoke about that, and just as much, of course, as you may have had it with the Dodgers
- 1:56:54and their magnificent drive to the pennant.
- 1:56:56But here on last Saturday, the Yankees were faced with this tremendous obstacle,
- 1:57:02one game behind of having to win the last two games of the year against their contender, the Red Sox,
- 1:57:09admittedly one of the greatest teams in baseball, in order to win it.
- 1:57:13And then they did, and it carried on into Sunday and then, of course, on every pitch, the pennant rolled.
- 1:57:19So you can imagine, well, the crowd, packed as they are here today, were roaring on every pitch.
- 1:57:26That explains it.
- 1:57:27Well, I know it was something.
- 1:57:29It seems that the mad joke gets out of a sick bed just in time to play the Red Sox, and it hurts them the most.
- 1:57:34Now we go on to the seventh inning, and Pirello first up for Brooklyn.
- 1:57:38He's gotten on both times, a walk and an hour.
- 1:57:41He cannot run very fast because of the groin injury.
- 1:57:44He swings, and there's a pop fly that second baseman Coleman is under.
- 1:57:47No first baseman, Henry, goes over and makes the grab.
- 1:57:50Coleman signals he'd take it, but Henry, who has the bigger mitt, playing first base, moved in, took it.
- 1:57:55So Pirello is now 0 for 2.
- 1:57:58First time, he has not been on.
- 1:58:02One up, one away, seventh inning, no score.
- 1:58:07Gil Hodges, 0 for 1, hit into the double play in the second inning and butted in the fifth.
- 1:58:12Takes a curve on the outside, called strike.
- 1:58:15Hodges, a big strapping right-hand batter.
- 1:58:18In case you folks are wondering about the strikeouts, Howard Emke, you remember,
- 1:58:25in the World Series of 29, the Athletics against the Cubs struck out 13.
- 1:58:30Pitch outside, 4 ball 1.
- 1:58:33So the pitcher who has turned in the most strikeouts in a World Series game was Emke with his 13.
- 1:58:40Don Newcomb struck out 8.
- 1:58:46A little early to be going for such salient statistics,
- 1:58:49but we thought it would answer a question if you happen to have it in your mind.
- 1:58:55Hodges, who stepped out of the box, steps in again, no score, one gone, seventh inning, game one.
- 1:59:03Hodges swings and misses at a hard-thrown curve ball.
- 1:59:05He missed it off the end of the bat.
- 1:59:09This curve renders when he really throws it hard.
- 1:59:12It doesn't break so wide as it breaks sharply.
- 1:59:17Fittler cups his hands. He's the first base coach.
- 1:59:20Holler something up to Hodges.
- 1:59:22Yankee outfield is at a very respectful depth,
- 1:59:27pulls slightly into left.
- 1:59:31Second baseman Coleman is a step over closer to second than from his normal straightaway spot.
- 1:59:38Fersudder, a step over toward third. It's short.
- 1:59:40Here's the pitch.
- 1:59:41Side on fastball and goes back to the stands.
- 1:59:43That was a lacrosse-fire attempt.
- 1:59:45It's the first time that Reynolds has stepped toward third and fired that ball
- 1:59:48to the outside of the plate on the right hand hitter.
- 1:59:52Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:59:54The breeze has picked up somewhat and is blowing straight out to right field.
- 2:00:04Not a strong wind, but it's a factor.
- 2:00:11Two-two pitch, fastball just missing outside.
- 2:00:14Reynolds not too pleased. He's really been counting on that one.
- 2:00:18Now three and two.
- 2:00:23Infield is Henrik at first.
- 2:00:25Coleman at second.
- 2:00:27A short risotto and a third, Johnson.
- 2:00:29Casey Stengel has really had to make some quick changes all through the year.
- 2:00:33Three-two pitch, strike three called, fastball on the outside.
- 2:00:36That's from the five-strike out for Reynolds who's coming along in that strike out department.
- 2:00:45Well, Campanella, the strong, stocky right-hand hitting catcher, was a long ball threat.
- 2:00:56Campanella, for one, drive ball to right field in the second inning based on balls in the fifth.
- 2:01:02They pitched him very carefully rather than give him anything too fat to hit at.
- 2:01:05Finally wound up walking.
- 2:01:09Curve ball, all over, too low. Ball what?
- 2:01:15One ball, no strikes.
- 2:01:19These two pitches have just simply kept this crowd very quiet.
- 2:01:24Throw, fastball low, ball two.
- 2:01:28Campanella looking to third base coach Milton Stock to see how manager Bert Schotten wants this situation
- 2:01:34taken care of or attempted, we might say.
- 2:01:41Two and all.
- 2:01:45Two-nothing pitches, swung on and missed.
- 2:01:48That was that hard curve ball thrown right off the hands.
- 2:01:50That's a beautiful pitch when it's placed just where it was then.
- 2:01:55Two balls, one strike.
- 2:01:58Two gone. Bases clear here in the seventh.
- 2:02:04Reynolds works, just misses outside and he now is in the hole three and one.
- 2:02:13No matter how good a hitter a pitcher is, the opposing pitcher always likes to have the opposing pitcher first up for the next inning.
- 2:02:21So nationally, Reynolds is going to be pitching in here trying to snuff out Campanella so the new goal will be first up in the eighth.
- 2:02:33Three-one pitch, swung on, curve ball, fouled off.
- 2:02:37Full count, three and two.
- 2:02:40Both pitches have worked very hard.
- 2:02:42Both of them are strong and both of them are capable of doing a lot of work in a series if it should go six or seven games.
- 2:02:48The bullpens have been quiet. There's only been one flurry of action.
- 2:02:51Fred Sanford, his male, told you, was up from the second inning and on it through briefly.
- 2:02:54Double play broke the back of that Brooklyn thread after two walks were given up by Reynolds.
- 2:02:59Joe Page, of course, who lives down there in the back of right center field, he hasn't gotten up yet.
- 2:03:04They save him for the meat on the table in the late innings.
- 2:03:09Brooklyn bullpens had three pitchers in it and they haven't stirred.
- 2:03:12Three-two pitch, cost by three, a fastball on the outside.
- 2:03:17And Campanella takes the classroom on the outside as does the same fake for Hodgley ahead of him.
- 2:03:23And that's six strikeouts for Reynolds.
- 2:03:26Joe, nothing, of course, in the top of the seventh inning.
- 2:03:30And we're really having some pitching. This ballgames a squeaker.
- 2:03:34The score is Brooklyn nothing and New York nothing.
- 2:03:38Well, you just heard Sid Gordon, famous third baseman of the New York Giants, say that he's never used a shaving instrument that's a match for the modern Gillette superspeed racer.
- 2:03:46Yes, and I'm sure that you'll put in with every word when you get yours.
- 2:03:51The Gillette superspeed racer changes blades instantly, shaves like a feather, and rinses clean and agitated.
- 2:03:58This racer can't jam, can't clog, and there's nothing to take apart or put together.
- 2:04:04Twist, it opens. Zip, it's loaded.
- 2:04:07Twist again, and you're ready to enjoy the slickest, most refreshing shaves ever.
- 2:04:12For real shaving ease and convenience, buy the new Gillette superspeed racer set at any convenience store.
- 2:04:19Believe me, it's a beauty and a bargain.
- 2:04:22You get the racer plus a 10 blade Gillette dispenser and the handsome serviceable styrene travel case, a whale of $1.75 value for only $1.
- 2:04:35Well, here's the big fella that actually came out of the hospital just 52 times in the year when the Yankees had to have it, each time facing the Red Soxers for it.
- 2:04:48Came back after the heel injury, big surgery at Boston, and the Yankees swept three games.
- 2:04:54Then he came back after being vetted with pneumonia, a virus infection, just in time for the Yankees to sweep the two that got them where they are today at the stadium for the Dodgers.
- 2:05:04DiMaggio, right hand batter, big Newcomb, right hand to pitches, fastball high and side up against the hands for ball one.
- 2:05:11DiMaggio was the first of Newcomb's eight strikeout victims, struck out the second inning.
- 2:05:16Hopped up to second base of the fourth, so he's 0 for 2.
- 2:05:20Outfield deep, round toward left, Newcomb's throw, swung on and fouled off.
- 2:05:24There was a curve ball in there, one and one, one ball, one strike.
- 2:05:30No score.
- 2:05:34Apparently there is nothing in 1945 as far as the big sticks are concerned.
- 2:05:38It's going to be easy.
- 2:05:40The attendance were tough.
- 2:05:41This ball game is tough.
- 2:05:43I guess this is the prevailing pattern of the year.
- 2:05:48One and one pitch, curve ball high and inside for ball two.
- 2:05:52Two and one.
- 2:05:53Two balls, one strike.
- 2:05:55Very anxious to get the attendance figures whenever they are announced on the press box.
- 2:06:00We'll have them up here in the radio sector and we'll certainly pass them on to you.
- 2:06:07Two balls, one strike.
- 2:06:10Newcomb delivers, Joe swings, fouls with all.
- 2:06:14DiMaggio looks as slender as when he first began to play professional ball.
- 2:06:20He wasn't too heavy.
- 2:06:22In fact, he was drawn very fine when he had his recent sickness and he lost 11 or 12 pounds.
- 2:06:30In fact, it's very hard to get Joe to even admit that he lost any weight.
- 2:06:33He didn't like to talk that way, but he has.
- 2:06:36His uniform is sort of draped on him a little bit.
- 2:06:39All right, two and two.
- 2:06:41Big Newcomb.
- 2:06:43Kick, throws.
- 2:06:44There's a high, high putt fly right in the middle of the infield.
- 2:06:47Robinson coming over, Reese coming over, and it's Robinson for the catch.
- 2:06:51Peeley was running in there.
- 2:06:52Apparently, the captain and take charge guy of the infield had designated who was going to catch it.
- 2:06:56That ball was right back at pitcher's mound.
- 2:06:58That could have been a grand scramble, as it was.
- 2:07:01It's a simple putt fly to second base from Robinson.
- 2:07:05DiMaggio is off with three in that in itself as a story.
- 2:07:10Johnny Lindell, who hit a change-up ball, second inning for the Yankees single.
- 2:07:19Reynolds is taking care of the next two hits.
- 2:07:21We only had four hits aggregate in the ball game.
- 2:07:23Jorgensen got a double in the first inning when Lindell came in just a little when he should have been going back.
- 2:07:31Some pitching.
- 2:07:34Played on fire Hubbard, wants to examine the baseball.
- 2:07:38Finds it's all right, hands it back to catch it, camp with Ella, fires it out to the mound.
- 2:07:43Big Lindell stepping in.
- 2:07:48I feel around toward left.
- 2:07:54Infield swung toward third.
- 2:07:56Newcomb's pitch, sharp curve over.
- 2:08:00It must have been a tough sight for Joe McArthur to see Lindell hit that home run Saturday afternoon,
- 2:08:05because it was McArthur during the Warriors who converted Lindell from just a so-so pitcher to an outfielder.
- 2:08:15Newcomb delivers fastball on the outside.
- 2:08:18One ball, one strike.
- 2:08:28Campanella, who handled an unsaid in Brooklyn pitching staff all year, very well, sets down back of the plate.
- 2:08:36There's a curveball low outside missing by just a tick.
- 2:08:39Two balls, one strike.
- 2:08:44Two and one, one gone, last to the seventh, no score.
- 2:08:49A crowd watchfully waiting.
- 2:08:58Two-one pitch, over.
- 2:09:00There was a slider which Newcomb called a hard curveball.
- 2:09:04Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:09:07Don has two types of curve, the one which does not break very much but explodes very quickly.
- 2:09:12It's a hard curve.
- 2:09:14A lot of pitches call it a slider.
- 2:09:15And then the other one is just orthodox big sweeping curve.
- 2:09:23To Indu.
- 2:09:26Lindell, who swings from the heels.
- 2:09:29The two-two pitch, curve on the outside for Paul Stake three.
- 2:09:34That gives Newcomb nine.
- 2:09:36Now check him out to be sure we haven't made a mistake on him,
- 2:09:40because he's beginning to pick up a lot of strikeouts.
- 2:09:48Now we have Billy Johnson, who is 0 for 2 in both of them strikeouts.
- 2:09:52And the consensus on the addition of Newcomb's K, that's the scoring symbol for a strikeout, nine.
- 2:10:01Two men gone, last half of the seventh.
- 2:10:06This ball game is no place for small boys.
- 2:10:10Don works, fastball strong on, hit down to deep third.
- 2:10:13Jorgensen up to throw over to first.
- 2:10:15End time, and that's all for Johnson.
- 2:10:17So for the Yankees, who got on one, two, three in the last half of the seventh inning.
- 2:10:23So let's see.
- 2:10:26The Yankees, in giving up 21 outs, have only had 24 batters.
- 2:10:30That shows you how tight that is.
- 2:10:32The men that got on for the Yankees stayed on.
- 2:10:37The Dodgers have only had one more man hit.
- 2:10:46So things are really just as they stand when you say that it's no score.
- 2:10:51That's what it is.
- 2:10:52And you talk about pitching being dominant.
- 2:10:55Well, the pitching has been dominant.
- 2:10:57They haven't been hitting, they haven't been running.
- 2:10:59The fielders have not had too many difficult chances.
- 2:11:02So Reynolds gets set now for the severe test to the eighth inning because the
- 2:11:07screws set stronger and bite deeper as you come down to the eighth and end of the
- 2:11:12ninth.
- 2:11:13And we'll take a 10-second pause for station identification.
- 2:11:18This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 2:11:22WOR and WOR FM, your World Series stations in New York.
- 2:11:30The applause that you hear here at Yankee Stadium greets pitcher Don Newcomb as he
- 2:11:35walks up to be the first batter for Brooklyn in the eighth inning.
- 2:11:46Newcomb, left-hand hitter, 4'2, against Reynolds.
- 2:11:50He grounded out short to first in the third inning and struck out in the fifth.
- 2:11:59I feel the step toward right.
- 2:12:00Newcomb leans in, Reynolds pitches, curve ball low inside.
- 2:12:04Reynolds knew, I guess he knew from Sunday night on that he was going to be the
- 2:12:07starting pitcher.
- 2:12:08Newcomb did not know until the players meeting before batting practice today that he
- 2:12:12was to be the pitcher.
- 2:12:14He figured it could be he or it could be Preetu Rao.
- 2:12:20Throw, swung on and missed, fastball and Don took a ruffle, one and one.
- 2:12:30Jerry Coleman talking away down second base.
- 2:12:36Jake Pippler that's out of hollow, coaching it first.
- 2:12:41Start right-hander, Reynolds delivers, fastball over there.
- 2:12:44Hand high on the outside, one and two.
- 2:12:47Reynolds and Vara handling the battery assignment for New York.
- 2:12:52Henrik was always picking play out of his spikes of his shoes down at first.
- 2:12:56Coleman, the rookie at second, resumed all.
- 2:12:59A veteran and still not too old at short and Willie Johnson, same category at third.
- 2:13:04Pitch, curve ball over, cost strike to Newcomb Newcomb.
- 2:13:07He just turned and started walking away.
- 2:13:11Strikeout number seven for Reynolds.
- 2:13:19This is the third straight Dodger to go down on strikes by Reynolds.
- 2:13:22All call strike three.
- 2:13:24Two right-hand hitters with curves on the outside.
- 2:13:26Newcomb left-hand batter, curve breaking in on the outside.
- 2:13:32So you can see that the pitches have had the hitters at their mercy so far.
- 2:13:35The batter is Reese, here in the eighth getting one out.
- 2:13:37Fastball through there, call strike, nothing in one.
- 2:13:41No balls, one strike, two veteran managers.
- 2:13:46Casey Stengel, Burt Schotten.
- 2:13:51Pitch, TV takes low, there's a sinker.
- 2:13:54One ball, one strike.
- 2:14:02One and one, that's the ball and strikeout, no score.
- 2:14:09Would you let safety raise the company?
- 2:14:12Mighty pleased to be sending you the big broadcast.
- 2:14:14There's a line drive back to the middle for a base hit.
- 2:14:16So Kiwi comes up with a solid single, which is Brooklyn's second base hit.
- 2:14:21This is the first hit since Jorgensen with one out got the double in the first inning.
- 2:14:25So Reese singles right through the middle.
- 2:14:30Two for Brooklyn and Jorgensen, who is one for two, stepping in.
- 2:14:38Reese at first, Kripler, his first base coach, goes over and talks to them for the moment.
- 2:14:44Now Henry comes on, takes the bag.
- 2:14:47Infield, he's gone up in double play depth.
- 2:14:53Johnson's in a little closer third.
- 2:14:57Throw to first, not in time, Reese back.
- 2:15:01Kiwi is a very alert, a very intelligent runner,
- 2:15:05but he's been bothered with a groin injury and he cannot run at top speed.
- 2:15:10The Dodgers did not have him trying to steal in September.
- 2:15:13Throw to first, Reese gets back.
- 2:15:15He goes out and takes a full lead.
- 2:15:19Reese, Rizzuto, Robinson, they all go way off first base.
- 2:15:25That's one reason the pitchers have to pick at them so much.
- 2:15:29Reynolds, set, checks first.
- 2:15:31Pitcher's a fastball outside.
- 2:15:33Ball one, one ball, no strikes.
- 2:15:35Jorgensen doubled the left center field when Lindell veered in instead of veering immediately back.
- 2:15:40They say this is a tough ballpark here at the stadium, even when you play in it all year long.
- 2:15:48Then Jorgensen grounded out second, first and third and walked in the sixth.
- 2:15:53Outfield toward right, left hand hitter, Reese off first.
- 2:15:57Reynolds works.
- 2:15:58There's a foul ball back on the screen directly behind Hall.
- 2:16:02It was a fastball coming in there.
- 2:16:05Reynolds is not wishing to get behind two and all.
- 2:16:07One ball, one strike.
- 2:16:12Madden Distangle has perfect confidence in Reynolds.
- 2:16:16He has not fallen to his bullpen and the Yankee bullpen contingent is sitting there at the rail fence out there in right center field.
- 2:16:22The paid attendance, 66,224.
- 2:16:2766,124.
- 2:16:29Why should I say paid? You can't get any unless you do pay.
- 2:16:32The attendance is 66,224.
- 2:16:35One ball, one strike.
- 2:16:37Two Jorgensen, no score.
- 2:16:38Reese at first, one out, eighth inning.
- 2:16:40There goes Reese.
- 2:16:41Jorgensen takes.
- 2:16:42There's a throw from Baller down to second.
- 2:16:43It's not in time and Reese flies in.
- 2:16:45The throw was very high.
- 2:16:47Guzzillo had to jump up to pull it out.
- 2:16:49So there were the outstretched hands of Tonsurello of the American League and Peeley was in by a wide margin.
- 2:16:56They did run him.
- 2:16:57Reese is getting up a little slowly.
- 2:17:01When ballplayers play with an injury and run like that for steel, that tells you all you want to know about it.
- 2:17:06That's the sort of player that Reese is.
- 2:17:08DiMaggio has shown it this year.
- 2:17:13Those are the telltale things that separate the men from the boys.
- 2:17:20So Peeley steals.
- 2:17:22Jorgensen cut.
- 2:17:23That was a hit and run play.
- 2:17:24But of course, anytime on a hit and run play, the run and all is at the bottom.
- 2:17:27They swing and miss.
- 2:17:29And now Casey Stengel steps to the front of his dugout and he's trying to get his defense set now the way he wants it.
- 2:17:37He has.
- 2:17:38So Jorgensen is up there one and two.
- 2:17:41Stengel moved Lindell Owen Moore into left center.
- 2:17:44Strike three swinging.
- 2:17:45High curve ball to Reynolds takes care of Jorgensen.
- 2:17:53So Jorgensen strikes out.
- 2:17:55Reese, who has the series now, only steel, is at second.
- 2:18:02That's seven, eight strikeouts for Reynolds.
- 2:18:06And nine for Newcomb, 17 strikeouts.
- 2:18:14Tomorrow's ball game will be here at the stadium, you know, just as this one is.
- 2:18:18And game time will be the same as this one.
- 2:18:20One o'clock Eastern Standard Time.
- 2:18:22And Gillette ad time is 1245 Eastern Standard Time tomorrow.
- 2:18:27Now here is Duke Snyder up.
- 2:18:28Two gone.
- 2:18:29Reese at second.
- 2:18:30No score.
- 2:18:31There's a ground foul outside first base.
- 2:18:33The ball dies before it gets there.
- 2:18:36Yankee bat boy retrieves it, throws it out.
- 2:18:40No balls, one strike.
- 2:18:42Two away.
- 2:18:46This ball game is approaching the breaking point.
- 2:18:50Both pitches have been most heroic, most efficient.
- 2:18:55Each has had the difference when he's had to have it.
- 2:18:58Reynolds has been in more trouble because of four bases on balls.
- 2:19:05Newcomb hasn't walked anybody.
- 2:19:08Snyder, 0 for 3 and two strikeouts, takes a high inside fastball, one and one.
- 2:19:12One ball, one strike.
- 2:19:14You know, scouting of teams is not relegated just to football alone.
- 2:19:19Both of these baseball teams have been very well scouted.
- 2:19:24The Yankees by the Dodgers and the Dodgers by the Yankees.
- 2:19:30And a lot of this effective pitching may be directly attributable to the sharp rise of the scouts in the last few weeks
- 2:19:37and how they have instructed and managed to shorten and stangle to have various hitters' pits too.
- 2:19:49One ball, one strike.
- 2:19:53Reynolds delivers high outside for ball two.
- 2:20:06Two on one, two gone.
- 2:20:10Race leading down on second.
- 2:20:16And a run doesn't look very big to either one of these teams, does it?
- 2:20:22Two on pitches, a curve over the outside for a call of second strike.
- 2:20:27Now you can get the suspense of the crowd.
- 2:20:29Here they are, roaring on each pitch.
- 2:20:34There's a little curve ball over the outside, two and two.
- 2:20:44Snyder, trim figure, slenderish.
- 2:20:49Great body turn, hip pivot.
- 2:20:51That's where he gets his power from.
- 2:20:56Two to pitch, slow run in this.
- 2:20:58Don't fall in there.
- 2:20:59That's three and Reynolds turned it loose.
- 2:21:01And he's now a four-luck.
- 2:21:03The Houston eights has nine strikeouts.
- 2:21:12Stars have gone the last half of the eighth inning.
- 2:21:14The score is, Brooklyn nothing and New York nothing.
- 2:21:20But I tell you, he's hit three home runs per game five times in his career.
- 2:21:25Well, you know his name is Johnny Myers of the Yankees.
- 2:21:28In Johnny's experience, no other razor blade compares with the Gillette Blue Blade in any respect.
- 2:21:34From your own experience, you know that the sharper and smoother finished a blade is, the quicker and easier it shaves.
- 2:21:41So get Gillette Blue Blades, five for a quarter.
- 2:21:45They are so sharp and so smoothly finished that they give the slickest, most refreshing shaves imaginable.
- 2:21:51Now for extra convenience at no extra cost, buy Gillette Blue Blades in the modern Gillette Dispenser that zips them out unwrapped.
- 2:21:59You get 20 blades, 40 shaving edges for 98 cents, 10 blades for 49 cents.
- 2:22:06Look sharp, feel sharp, be sharp. Use Gillette Blue Blades with the sharpest edges ever home.
- 2:22:20Well, here we are.
- 2:22:22Seven and a half innings disposed out. Eighteen struck out hitters.
- 2:22:27And that tells you the big story.
- 2:22:29So we move on to the last of the eighths. No score.
- 2:22:32The first up for the Yankees is the rookie right fielder, Cliff Mapes.
- 2:22:36Had a great year last year out of Kansas City. Left hand batter.
- 2:22:41He struck out both times. He's been up against Newcomb. Now Newcomb, bending to his past, delivers.
- 2:22:46Fast ball high outside, ball one. Mapes ran up on the ball as though he would try and pull a bunt.
- 2:22:51Beat it out for a base hit. Outfield, he swung into right.
- 2:22:56Play him to pull.
- 2:22:58Campanella down to give the sign to big umpire, Cal Hubbard. Back of the cross position of the receiver.
- 2:23:03Right hander throws. Curve in there for a call strike.
- 2:23:09One and one.
- 2:23:13Hubbard's so big when he calls a strike he looks like the Statue of Liberty holding that torch up there.
- 2:23:20Of course, I would say he's dressed a little differently.
- 2:23:26One and one. Pitch. Bunted. Missed. Strike two.
- 2:23:31Mapes tried to bunt. An inside slider. By the hands. One ball, two strikes.
- 2:23:38Boy, this is really getting tough.
- 2:23:43Of course, you never know until the ball game is over the answer to a tough game.
- 2:23:48The answer to a tough problem. Tough whiskers. One word, Gillette. You know that all the time.
- 2:23:54One ball, two strikes.
- 2:23:56Throw. Throw in. Missed. Strike three. The ball was tipped.
- 2:23:59And Campanella held it and made it.
- 2:24:01Swirl around. Swished out bat. You could see that he was sore about it.
- 2:24:06Ten strikeouts for Newport. Nineteen in the game and the Yankee bullpen is now going.
- 2:24:11Right hander, Fred Sandford, and left hander, Joe Page, are throwing.
- 2:24:16Which indicates that manager Stingold might want to pitch it for Reynolds if he saw he had reason to do so during the last of the eighth.
- 2:24:23But let's let the results write the story as it takes place.
- 2:24:28Jerick Coleman works well up on the handle of that bat.
- 2:24:32Slendritch, rookies, second baseman, right hand hitter. Struck out twice. Takes a fast ball high inside.
- 2:24:37One and one. One out. No score.
- 2:24:42As dark as it is this afternoon, you realize the wisdom of starting these games at one o'clock.
- 2:24:47Tomorrow's game will be at one just as though this one. That gives you all the time that you can get.
- 2:24:52Today's game, of course, according to the New York State law, will be two o'clock. All the others will be one o'clock.
- 2:24:57And of course, air time. Best wishes you left fifteen minutes earlier.
- 2:25:01Big Newcomb, frumped once, twice, throws. Fast ball's one on zero down the next little corner. She's in there for a base hit.
- 2:25:07Roller has to play the ball on the count. And there is Coleman on his way to second. He's in there for a double.
- 2:25:12A solid line-side double. He hit an outside fast ball sharply.
- 2:25:24Now the Yankees come up with a very solid pressure in the last of the eighth inning.
- 2:25:30And Reynolds is coming on to hit for himself. So as one man's gone, Coleman lashes out
- 2:25:37and lines one into the right field corner for a solid double. And there is Coach Clyde Soukforth, who goes out to the mound
- 2:25:43for Manager Bert Schotton to talk to pitchers when they are embattled.
- 2:25:47Souk is going out to the mound to talk to Big Newcomb right now.
- 2:25:51Reynolds has a double and a single for the two times he's been up. One man gone. It is no score.
- 2:25:57And the Yankees now have a real serious threat in the last of the eighth inning.
- 2:26:02Soukforth going back into the bench. He's cared for whatever message Manager Schotton wanted sent out there.
- 2:26:09Manager Schotton, like Connie Mack of the Athletics, manages in street clothes.
- 2:26:14Therefore under baseball law, he cannot step out on the playing field in the game.
- 2:26:17He can't go on that field unless you're in the baseball suit or the umpire's blues.
- 2:26:22All right pitcher. Reynolds is up. Two for two. Right hander Newcomb delivers.
- 2:26:27Curve ball on the outside for a called strike. Reynolds, the right hand hitter.
- 2:26:32The Brooklyn bullpen is of course now sprung into activity.
- 2:26:40Attender Joe Hatton is down. Neon right handers Banner and Erskine.
- 2:26:46Yankee bullpen stops working. Reynolds up there hitting. Swings at a curve. Doesn't get it.
- 2:26:50And the outside. It's fake too. No balls. Two strikes.
- 2:26:56One man gone.
- 2:27:03Every pitch. Heavily weighted.
- 2:27:08They have big potentials out here riding now. No score.
- 2:27:12Sun breaks out again. Plenty of light. Pitch fastball low outside.
- 2:27:17Reynolds refused to chase it. He can't put another down to his right to hold it up one and two.
- 2:27:21Coleman who can run. Leading down off second and is constantly repeating to Frankie Presetti the fact that one man is out.
- 2:27:30That's very important. That means the ball's hit ahead of him. He stays at second base.
- 2:27:35One and two pitch. Outside a curve ball for a ball two. And Caffinola had to really go down to his right to keep that ball from getting loose.
- 2:27:43So it's a great crowd of 66,224. And they're all looking off. Up there on the edge of their seats.
- 2:27:52Like to see Commissioner Channels on the edge of his seat leaning on the rail in front of his box.
- 2:27:58Boy this is something worth really looking at with both eyes.
- 2:28:04So Newcomb getting ready to take dead aim. Reynolds leaning in. The two two pitch.
- 2:28:10Sky Tree curve on the outside. That just got it.
- 2:28:14So Reynolds turns and walks away. It's the first time that he's been turned back from the plate.
- 2:28:18Eleven strikeouts for Don Newcomb. Twenty strikeouts in the ball game.
- 2:28:25Why aren't there any runs? Twenty strikeouts. That's good enough.
- 2:28:33And now a great little money player, Phil Rizzuto up there.
- 2:28:43Coleman, second base. He's ready to go. He's repeating now. It's your third base coach, Crisetti.
- 2:28:49That is with a wig wagging his fingers too high, which means you're on or anything.
- 2:28:53No score. Newcomb throws. Curves for one. It's a high fly ball in the center.
- 2:28:57Newcomb's in a step. He's going back two steps. He's under it. He waits. He has it. That's all for the eighth inning threat.
- 2:29:11Well that is a very good threat that went past the boards in the eighth inning.
- 2:29:15So here we come into the ninth inning. I'd say the ball game is even up.
- 2:29:20Each team had a fine threat in the eighth inning. As Reese reached second base, if you'll recall,
- 2:29:25with one out in the eighth, a single and a steal. Yankees had a man in the eighth inning.
- 2:29:30Coleman got there with one out. He's two bagger and never got past it.
- 2:29:34So it continues to be the two.
- 2:29:37Fans, to enjoy a world of shaving satisfaction for almost a song,
- 2:29:42buy the famous Gillette Tac razor and five easy shaving Gillette blue blades for only 49 cents.
- 2:29:49The Gillette Tac sets up whiskers as a barber does.
- 2:29:52Smooths your skin ahead of the shaving edge and skims off the stubble with light gentle strokes.
- 2:29:58Believe me, you get shaves at all shaves and save money too.
- 2:30:05Well I notice you're digging down in that red book. I know you're looking for aggregate strikeouts.
- 2:30:09That is most strikeouts by everybody in a World Series game. Is there anything noted on that?
- 2:30:14We've been checking. As a matter of fact, our record book doesn't list it,
- 2:30:17but we went checking with some of the veteran scribes and they went back into other records.
- 2:30:21And in 1944, 22 strikeouts by the two teams in one ball game.
- 2:30:26That was the Cardinals-Browns World Series. We'll give you the pictures a little bit later.
- 2:30:31All right, we've got 20 strikeouts in this one at the end of eighth.
- 2:30:34Now Robinson, his first step in the ninth inning. He's off the three.
- 2:30:38Last time up, hit the ball hard and a maggio of me and a fine galloping catch in deep left center.
- 2:30:42Jack takes a curve, over for a call strike.
- 2:30:50No balls, one strike.
- 2:30:58The strikeouts that Mel was referring to were 10 by Galehouse and 12 by Mort Cooper.
- 2:31:03Now Robinson hits the ground ball down towards short.
- 2:31:05Result of a charger, throws to first and Jack is out by a wide margin, about four steps.
- 2:31:09So one up and one gone, top of sixth inning.
- 2:31:12So 22 strikeouts back in the All-St. Louis World Series.
- 2:31:1710 by Galehouse and 12 by Mort Cooper.
- 2:31:21We've had 20 so far today.
- 2:31:26One gone, top of the ninth.
- 2:31:28But we're not citing that that is the record of aggregate strikeouts.
- 2:31:31We just haven't been able to put our finger on anything any closer than that.
- 2:31:35Gene Harmanski, 0 for 2, swings and there's a high pop fly.
- 2:31:38Short step for Sudor, getting under it, under it, and makes the grab.
- 2:31:42On the inside grass, it's on a short two-maner retired.
- 2:31:45Top of the ninth, there's Randall's continuous pitching.
- 2:31:50And Carl Forello, who is 0 for 2, face on ball, got on with an error, then popped it to first, stepping in.
- 2:31:57Two gone, top of the ninth.
- 2:32:00Barrow settles down to give the sign.
- 2:32:02Short step into Forello and Forello grins.
- 2:32:07I feel back in the right, they're not playing Carl to pull.
- 2:32:11He doesn't pull too much to the left of the roll and with this one injury, which prevents his full pivot, they don't think to pull at all.
- 2:32:17There's a foul ball out of play.
- 2:32:19Nothing in one, no balls, one strike.
- 2:32:30Nothing in one, two down, no score, ninth inning.
- 2:32:37Crowd is watching and waiting, something to watch and much to be waited for.
- 2:32:44Right hander Randall's pitches, a curve low and away, one ball, one strike.
- 2:32:48Barrow just batted the ball down, picks it up, throws it out to the mound.
- 2:32:57One and one.
- 2:33:00Forello chokes that stick just about half an inch.
- 2:33:06Randall's pumped once, deals overhand, fastball good on the outside above the knees, first ball, second strike.
- 2:33:13One and two.
- 2:33:20This is the great game that Randall has pitched in his entire career.
- 2:33:30Right hander pumping, dealing sidearm, curve ball, missing low outside.
- 2:33:35Two and two, two balls, two strikes.
- 2:33:37He leaned toward third when he cut that one loose.
- 2:33:43Two and two, top of the ninth.
- 2:33:46Brooklyn, the visiting ball club here at Yankee Stadium, had bats.
- 2:33:49Nobody has a run.
- 2:33:52Only one man has reached third base safely.
- 2:33:54He reached it in the second inning for the Dodgers with two out.
- 2:33:57Two to pitch, swung on foul into the stands, back of first base, top foul ball.
- 2:34:04Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:34:11Randall is very calmly rubbing up the new ball, standing at the back of the mound.
- 2:34:21Big crowd is so quiet that you can hear the piping shrill voices of the infielders as they holler encouragement to the pitcher.
- 2:34:30Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:34:36Randall takes a sign, pumps once, delivers, curve ball, back on the screen.
- 2:34:41It's still two and two.
- 2:34:43Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:34:47Two gone.
- 2:34:53Anybody that was asking for a battle today really got it.
- 2:35:04Apparently nothing is going to come easy to a winner this year in baseball.
- 2:35:12Two to pitch, swung on as a high fly ball into short right center field.
- 2:35:16Right fielder Maples coming in under it.
- 2:35:19He has it, so that's all for Trello who just keeps right on,
- 2:35:24lifting up short right field, picks up his glove, and we get ready to go into the last half of the ninth inning.
- 2:35:32Last of the ninth inning.
- 2:35:34Nobody has any runs.
- 2:35:36That's Big Newcomb, groping out to the mound.
- 2:35:40Well, Brother Allen, come over here now to the microphone and have you been seeing this thing?
- 2:35:48I tell you, I've just been sitting here really amazed at two great pitchers,
- 2:35:53given perhaps two of the best performances of their careers.
- 2:35:58The one, comparatively brief, Don Newcomb, who has come like a meteor this year,
- 2:36:04and Allie Reynolds, a veteran, who actually might have gone through the first nine innings with a one hitter,
- 2:36:12who might have had a no hitter going through the eighth inning when Reese singled because, as you mentioned,
- 2:36:18and as I mentioned earlier, Johnny Lindell overran Jorgensen's drive, which he might have caught.
- 2:36:24And Big Don Newcomb, who has been almost as stingy with his base hit, certainly when he meant anything,
- 2:36:30and who has been striking them out right and left and firing and firing and firing.
- 2:36:34And it's just been a tremendous ball game all the way.
- 2:36:38And this is what I call baseball as the people have loved it through the years.
- 2:36:44Well, this is a very fit ball game for a World Series.
- 2:36:48In other words, the two big teams, and here's the big game and the two big pitchers, and here we go.
- 2:36:53All right, Tommy Henrik, first step last of the ninth.
- 2:36:55We followed by Barra and then by DiMaggio.
- 2:36:57So the Yankees have their big hitters now in the line.
- 2:37:00Newcomb on the mound, the outfield deep toward right.
- 2:37:03Henrik, 0 for 3, left hand batter.
- 2:37:05Takes a curve that is outside for a ball one.
- 2:37:12Henrik swings from the end.
- 2:37:16Right side of the infield, it's full depth.
- 2:37:18Hodges the first base and steps over toward the line.
- 2:37:20Newcomb's pitch has his curve down across the shins for ball two.
- 2:37:25Two balls, no strikes.
- 2:37:28Two and all.
- 2:37:34Newcomb looking into the dirt.
- 2:37:37He has a rather odd idiosyncrasy on the mound and he's pumping with 35 in a second.
- 2:37:42Two-nothing pitchers, hung on.
- 2:37:44Drilled out toward right field, going way back.
- 2:37:46That's the ball game, a home run for Tommy Henrik.
- 2:37:50There's Henrik now between first and second.
- 2:37:52Bill Dickie, the first base, almost jumped on his back and realized that's a tender back and he better not.
- 2:37:57Henrik's coming in the third.
- 2:37:58He is cutting his home run home.
- 2:38:01Look at him grin.
- 2:38:02All he can think is a slice of watermelon.
- 2:38:04Wow.
- 2:38:06All reliable.
- 2:38:07Hit one.
- 2:38:08That's all.
- 2:38:19Well, they call him all reliable and they're not joking.
- 2:38:22He hit a two-nothing pitch.
- 2:38:25Wow.
- 2:38:26Way back up there in the straightaway right field stand.
- 2:38:29So Henrik, who hit a home run in the eighth inning Sunday to guarantee the Yankees a cushion to work on against the Red Sox to get into the World Series,
- 2:38:38now gives the Yankees a one-game cushion with a very dramatic home run with the startling suddenness of a pistol shot.
- 2:38:47The denouement, the climax, was reached.
- 2:38:51So the Dodgers walk off the field, expected to start for the exits, and the Yankees did a wild war dance as they went off.
- 2:38:58And Henrik, I don't believe he ever enjoyed running a home run any more than he ran now.
- 2:39:03So that's that.
- 2:39:05And now we're going to switch over to Mel and have him give you a recapitulation on the ball game.
- 2:39:11Pitchers and that's Reynolds walking out to the mound.
- 2:39:13Well, Mel, how about Henrik?
- 2:39:15You've seen him do that many times, haven't you?
- 2:39:17I've seen Henrik do that all this year.
- 2:39:19As a matter of fact, he hit a home run opening day this year to win a ball game for the Yankees.
- 2:39:27He hit a home run on the closing day to clinch it.
- 2:39:30And he hits a home run on the opening day of the 1949 World Series to win the first game of it.
- 2:39:37He is one of your old pros who's been around a long while, and that was his fourth World Series home run.
- 2:39:47And I don't think that there's ever been a home run in his entire life that he has ever enjoyed more than that one.
- 2:39:55Sixty-six thousand, two hundred and twenty-four people sitting there and with the suddenness of a bullet out of a cannon,
- 2:40:03as Red described it so aptly and precisely for you, the ball game was over.
- 2:40:08And here I think that the entire assemblage here, including Red, including myself, were expecting an extra inning ball game.
- 2:40:18We just began to feel that perhaps it was going to go on and on and on.
- 2:40:22You didn't know when the breaking point would come, and then it came just suddenly.
- 2:40:26And that's the way it happens when you get down to that last inning or you get into that sudden death period,
- 2:40:31and the home team, the last of the ninth, of course, is in that situation, and boom, there it was.
- 2:40:36It was a tough break for a gallant guy, Don Newcomb, who came back with just two days' rest.
- 2:40:43Red has seen him pitch many times this year.
- 2:40:46I had the pleasure of watching him shut out the New York Giants on a night game,
- 2:40:50and his fastball was blazing.
- 2:40:52And to me, he pitched a tremendous game today, even a better one, as he struck out one Yankee after another
- 2:40:59and wound up with a total of 11 strikeouts, two short, of Howard Emke's single game record of 13,
- 2:41:05as we told you set back in 1928, 1929 on October the 8th when he pitched against the Cubs for the Philadelphia Athletics.
- 2:41:15Allie Reynolds came along with nine strikeouts, and though Reynolds was in more frequent trouble than was Newcomb
- 2:41:21because of more wildness, Reynolds, having walked some poor men while Don Newcomb did not walk a man
- 2:41:28and has an opportunity, perhaps, if you like your statistics, to join Kyle Mays, a Yankee pitcher many years ago,
- 2:41:36who in 1921 did not allow any bases on balls in a single-world series of 26 consecutive innings of pitching
- 2:41:45that went through three ball games. So Newcomb went through one without allowing a base on balls.
- 2:41:50Reynolds, on the other hand, allowed four, and as a result was in frequent trouble here and there, and went to many 3-2 counts.
- 2:41:57Newcomb rarely ever went to a 3-2 count comparatively, as he had his control down a real sharp.
- 2:42:04An error by Jerry Coleman allowed Reynolds to be in trouble, and although this is, again, repetition,
- 2:42:13it's merely from the standpoint of reporting, Johnny Jorgensen's first inning double was a ball that all observers will tell you
- 2:42:20should have been caught in the normal course of events. That's part of the game that it wasn't,
- 2:42:24but we're merely indicating the type of game that Reynolds pitched that as far as his pitching was concerned,
- 2:42:29he should have had a no-hitter going into the eighth inning. P. Ree Reese's single was one that there was no question about at all.
- 2:42:36A clean base at all the way, and Reynolds wound up pitching a two-hit ball game.
- 2:42:43And if you want to decide on the basis of hits, the Yankees had five, the Dodgers two, and therefore the Yankees deserved to win.
- 2:42:52You can do it that way, but of course that's not a good way of looking at it.
- 2:42:55You had two tremendous pitching performances today, and when you go on like that, it was just as the game Sunday between the Yankees and the Red Sox.
- 2:43:05One of those two teams had to lose, one had to win the pennant. Somebody had to win it.
- 2:43:10It couldn't go on forever, and that's the way this game was today.
- 2:43:13It was a brilliantly played game all the way through, and it was just one of the finest World Series games that I can ever recall seeing in many a year.
- 2:43:24So your total showed the Yankees one run, five hits, one error, and four men left on base, while the Brooklyn Dodgers were blank with two hits, did not make an error, and had six men left on base.
- 2:43:41And now fans make a date to be with us by way of radio tomorrow for the second game of the series, and we'll have fun.
- 2:43:47Tuning time will be 12.45 Eastern Standard Time, the same as today.
- 2:43:54So our hats are off to the Brooklyn Dodgers, to the New York Yankees, and to Allie Reynolds of Oklahoma City, who pitched a brilliant two-hitter,
- 2:44:05and with the help of Tommy Henrich, bested Don Newcomb and the Dodgers in an equally brilliantly pitched game, one to nothing.
- 2:44:12So until tomorrow, smooth sailing, smooth shaving, and good afternoon from your host, the Gillette Safety Racer Company, Red Barber, and yours truly, Mel Allen.
- 2:44:23We wish to thank the makers of Philip Morris Cigarettes and Alka-Seltzer, co-sponsors of Queen for a Day, for delaying their broadcast time today in order that we might bring you the World Series.
- 2:44:33Queen for a Day follows station identification.
- 2:44:36We also wish to thank the makers of La Rosa Macaroni Spaghetti and Egg Noodles, sponsors of the La Rosa Hollywood Theatre of Stars, for relinquishing their broadcast time today.
- 2:44:45This is the Mutual Broadcasting System.
- 2:44:48This is the shaving instrument that's a match for the modern Gillette Super Speed Racer.

- 2:44:56The Gillette Super Speed Racer changes blades instantly, shaves like a feather, and wrenches clean and agitated.
- 2:45:04This razor can't jam, can't clog, and there's nothing to take apart or put together.
- 2:45:09Twist, it opens. Zip, it's loaded.
- 2:45:12Twist again, and you're ready to enjoy the slickest, most refreshing shaves ever.
- 2:45:18For real shaving ease and convenience, buy the new Gillette Super Speed Racer set at any convenience store.
- 2:45:25Believe me, it's a beauty and a bargain.
- 2:45:28You got the razor plus a 10 blade Gillette dispenser and a handsome serviceable styrene travel case, a whale of a $1.75 value, for only a dollar.
- 2:45:41Well, here's the big fella that actually came out of the hospital just 52 times in the year when the Yankees had to have it, each time facing the Red Sox's foot.
- 2:45:53Came back after the heel injury, big series at Boston, and the Yankees swept three games.
- 2:45:59Then he came back after being bedded with pneumonia, a virus infection, just in time for the Yankees to sweep the two that got them where they are today at the stadium for the Dodgers.
- 2:46:09DiMaggio, right hand batter, big Newcomb, right-hander pitches, fastball high and side up against the hands from all one.
- 2:46:16DiMaggio was the first of Newcomb's eight strikeout victims, struck out the second inning, upped up to second base of the fourth, so he's 0-2.
- 2:46:25Out to a deep round toward left, Newcomb's throw, swung on and fouled off.
- 2:46:29There was a curveball in there, one and one, one ball, one strike.
- 2:46:35No score.
- 2:46:39Apparently there is nothing in 1945 as far as the big stakes are concerned.
- 2:46:43It's going to be easy.
- 2:46:45The defendants were tough.
- 2:46:47This ball game is tough.
- 2:46:49I guess this is the prevailing pattern of the year.
- 2:46:53One and one pitch, curveball high and inside for a ball two, two and one.
- 2:46:58Two balls, one strike.
- 2:47:00They're very anxious to get the attendance figures whenever they are announced.
- 2:47:04The press box will have them appear in the radio section, and we'll certainly pass them on to you.
- 2:47:12Two balls, one strike.
- 2:47:15Newcomb delivers, Joe swings, fouls with all.
- 2:47:19DiMaggio looks as slender as when he first began to play professional ball.
- 2:47:25He wasn't too heavy.
- 2:47:27In fact, he was drawn very fine when he had his recent sickness, and he lost 11 to 12 pounds.
- 2:47:35In fact, it's very hard to get Jody even to admit that he lost any weight.
- 2:47:38He didn't like to talk that way.
- 2:47:40But he has. His uniform is sort of draped on him a little bit.
- 2:47:44All right, two and two.
- 2:47:46Big Newcomb.
- 2:47:48Kicks, throws.
- 2:47:49There's a high, high pop fly right in the middle of the infield.
- 2:47:52Robinson coming over, Reese coming over, and it's Robinson for the catch.
- 2:47:56Peely was running in there.
- 2:47:57Apparently, the captain then takes charge of the guy at the infield to designate who was going to catch it.
- 2:48:01That ball was right back at pitcher's mound.
- 2:48:03That could have been a grand scramble, as it was.
- 2:48:06It's a simple pop fly to second place for Robinson.
- 2:48:10But the Madjoes off with three in that in itself is a story.
- 2:48:15Johnny Lindell, who hit a change-up ball, second inning for the Yankees single.
- 2:48:24Reynolds has taken care of the next two hits.
- 2:48:26He only had four hits to aggregate in the ball game.
- 2:48:28Jorgensen got a double in the first inning when Lindell came in just a little when he should have been going back.
- 2:48:35Some pitching.
- 2:48:40Played on fire Hubbard wants to examine the baseball.
- 2:48:44Finds it's all right, hands it back to catcher Campo Dello, fires it out to the mound.
- 2:48:48Big Lindell stepping in.
- 2:48:53I feel around toward left.
- 2:48:59Infield swung toward third.
- 2:49:01You can pitch sharp curve over.
- 2:49:05It must have been a tough sight for Joe McArthur to see Lindell hit that home run Saturday afternoon,
- 2:49:10because it was McArthur during the Warriors who converted Lindell from just a so-so pitcher to an outfielder.
- 2:49:20Newcomb delivers fastball on the outside. One ball, one strike.
- 2:49:33Campo Dello, who handled an uninsured in Brooklyn pitching staff all year, very well, sets down back of the plate.
- 2:49:41There's a curve ball low outside missing by just a tick. Two balls, one strike.
- 2:49:49Two and one, one gone, last to the seventh, no score.
- 2:49:54A crowd watchfully waiting.
- 2:50:03Two-one pitch over. There was a slider which Newcomb called a hard curve ball.
- 2:50:09Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:50:12One has two types of curve, the one which does not break very much but explodes very quickly. It's a hard curve.
- 2:50:19A lot of pitches called the slider. And then the other one is just orthodox big sweeping curve.
- 2:50:28Two and two.
- 2:50:32Lindell, who swings from the heels. The two-two pitch.
- 2:50:36Curve on the outside for four strikes three.
- 2:50:39That gives Newcomb nine. Now check him out to be sure we haven't made a mistake on him because he's beginning to pick up a lot of strikeouts.
- 2:50:53Now we have Billy Johnson who is 0 for 2 on both of them strikeouts.
- 2:50:57And the consensus on the addition of Newcomb's K's, that's the scoring symbol for a strikeout, nine.
- 2:51:07Two men gone. Last half of the seventh.
- 2:51:12This ball game is no place for small boys.
- 2:51:16Don works. Fastball swung on, hit down to deep third. Jorgensen up to throw over to first.
- 2:51:21End time and that's off to Johnson.
- 2:51:23It's off to the Yankees who go down one, two, three in the last half of the seventh inning.
- 2:51:29So let's see.
- 2:51:32The Yankees in giving up 21 outs have only had 24 batters. That shows you how tight that is.
- 2:51:38The men that got on for the Yankees stayed on.
- 2:51:43The Dodgers have only had one more man hit.
- 2:51:51So things are really just as they stand when you say that it's no score.
- 2:51:56That's what it is.
- 2:51:58And you talk about pitching being dominant.
- 2:52:01The pitching has been dominant. They haven't been hitting, they haven't been running.
- 2:52:05The fielders have not had too many difficult chances.
- 2:52:08So Reynolds gets set now for the severe test to the eighth inning because the screws set stronger and bite deeper.
- 2:52:16And you come down to the eighth and end of the ninth.
- 2:52:19And we'll take a ten second pause for station identification.
- 2:52:24This is the mutual broadcasting system.
- 2:52:28WOR and WOR FM, your World Series stations in New York.
- 2:52:36The applause that you hear here at Yankee Stadium greets pitcher Don Newcomb as he walks up to be the first batter for Brooklyn in the eighth inning.
- 2:52:51Newcomb left hand hitter.
- 2:52:54All for two against Reynolds. He grounded out short to first in the third inning and struck out in the fifth.
- 2:53:04I feel the step toward right. Newcomb leans in. Reynolds pitches. Curveball low inside.
- 2:53:09Reynolds knew, I guess he knew from Sunday night on that he was going to be the starting pitcher.
- 2:53:14Newcomb did not know until the players meeting before batting practice today that he was to be the pitcher.
- 2:53:20He figured it could be he or it could be Pooch or Rolfe.
- 2:53:25Throw, throw on and miss. Fastball and Don took a ruffle. One and one.
- 2:53:35Jerry Coleman talking away down second base.
- 2:53:41Jake Kutler that side of hollow coaching it first.
- 2:53:46Start right hand to Reynolds delivers. Fastball all over there. Hand high on the outside. One and two.
- 2:53:52Reynolds and Vara handling the battery assignment for New York.
- 2:53:57Henrik was always picking play out of his spikes of his shoes down at first.
- 2:54:02Coleman the rookie at second. Rizzuto veteran and still not too old at short.
- 2:54:07And for the Johnsons same category at third. Pitch. Curveball over. Call strike three. Newcomb knew it.
- 2:54:13Vara started walking away.
- 2:54:17Strike out number seven for Reynolds.
- 2:54:24This is the third strike Dodger to go down on strikes by Reynolds. All call strike three.
- 2:54:30Two right hand hitters with curves on the outside. Newcomb left hand batter curve breaking in on the outside.
- 2:54:38So you can see that the pitchers have had the hitters at their mercy so far.
- 2:54:41So here in the eighth inning one out. Fastball through there. Call strike. Nothing in one.
- 2:54:46No balls. One strike. Two veteran managers.
- 2:54:51Casey Stengel, Bert Schotten.
- 2:54:56Pitch. He takes low. Here's a sinker. One ball. One strike.
- 2:55:07One and one. That's the ball and strike out. No score.
- 2:55:14Would you let safety raise the company?
- 2:55:17Might be pleased to be sending you the big broadcast. There's a line drive back to the middle for a base hit.
- 2:55:21So Kiwi comes up with a solid single which is Brooklyn's second base hit.
- 2:55:26This is the first hit since Jorgensen with one out got the double in the first inning.
- 2:55:31So Rizz single's right through the middle.
- 2:55:35Number two for Brooklyn and Jorgensen through is one for two stepping in.
- 2:55:43Reese at first.
- 2:55:45Klippler, the first base coach, goes over and talks to them for the moment.
- 2:55:49Now Henry comes on, takes the bag.
- 2:55:52Infield is going up in double play depth.
- 2:55:58Johnson's in a little closer third.
- 2:56:02Throw to first, not in time, Reese back.
- 2:56:06Steele is a very alert, a very intelligent runner.
- 2:56:10But he's been bothered with a groin injury and he cannot run at top speed.
- 2:56:15The Dodgers did not have him trying to steal in September.
- 2:56:18Throw to first, Reese gets back. He goes out and takes a full lead.
- 2:56:24Reese, Rizzuto, Robinson, they all go way off first base.
- 2:56:30That's one reason the pitchers have to pick at them so much.
- 2:56:34Reynolds set, checks first.
- 2:56:36Pitchers are fastball outside. All one, one ball, no strikes.
- 2:56:40Jorgensen doubled the left center field when Lindell bearded in instead of during immediately back.
- 2:56:45They say this is a tough ballpark here at the stadium even when you play in it all year long.
- 2:56:53Then Jorgensen grounded that second, first and the third and walked in the sixth.
- 2:56:58Outfield toward right, left hand hitter.
- 2:57:01Reese off first. Reynolds works.
- 2:57:03There's a foul ball back on the screen directly behind Hall.
- 2:57:07With a fastball coming in there, Reynolds is not wishing to get behind two and all.
- 2:57:12One ball, one strike.
- 2:57:17Madden Distangle has perfect confidence in Reynolds.
- 2:57:21He has not fallen to his bullpen and the Yankee bullpen contingent is sitting there at the rail fence out there in right center field.
- 2:57:27The paid attendance, 66,224.
- 2:57:34I should say paid, you can't get any unless you do pay.
- 2:57:37The attendance is 66,224.
- 2:57:41One ball, one strike. Two Jorgensen, no score. Reese at first, one out. Eight inning.
- 2:57:45There goes Reese, joins and takes. There's a throw from Bauer down to second.
- 2:57:48It's not in time and Reese slides in.
- 2:57:51The throw was very high. Grizillo had to jump up to pull it out.
- 2:57:55Throw there with the outstretched hand of Mark Consarello of the American League and Peewee was in by a wide margin.
- 2:58:02They did run him. Reese is getting up a little slowly.
- 2:58:06When ballplayers play with an injury and run like that for steel, that tells you all you want to know about it.
- 2:58:12That's the sort of player that Reese is. The Maggio has shown it this year.
- 2:58:18Those are the telltale things that separate the men from the boys.
- 2:58:25So Peewee steals. Jorgensen cut. That was a hit and run play.
- 2:58:29But of course, any time on a hit and run play, the run and all is at the bottom.
- 2:58:32They swing and miss.
- 2:58:34And now Casey Stengel steps to the front of his dugout and he's trying to get his defense set now the way he wants it.
- 2:58:42He has. So Jorgensen is up there one and two.
- 2:58:46Stengel moved Lindell O'Neal more into left center. Strike three swinging.
- 2:58:51High curve ball to Reynolds takes care of Jorgensen.
- 2:58:58So Jorgensen strikes out. Reese, who has the series now only steel, is at second.
- 2:59:07That's seven, eight strikeouts for Reynolds.
- 2:59:11Eight for Reynolds and nine for Newcomb. Seventeen strikeouts.
- 2:59:20Tomorrow's ball game will be here at the stadium, you know, just as this one is.
- 2:59:24And game time will be the same as this one. One o'clock Eastern Standard Time.
- 2:59:28And Gillette air time is 1245 Eastern Standard Time tomorrow.
- 2:59:33Now here is Duke Snyder up. Two gone. Reese at second. No score.
- 2:59:36There's a ground foul outside first base. The ball dies before it gets there.
- 2:59:41Yankee bat boy retrieves it, throws it out.
- 2:59:45No balls, one strike. Two away.
- 2:59:51This ball game is approaching the breaking point.
- 2:59:56Both pitches have been most heroic, most efficient.
- 3:00:01Each has had the difference when he's had to have it.
- 3:00:04The Yankees has been in more trouble because of four bases on balls.
- 3:00:11Newcomb hasn't walked anybody.
- 3:00:14Snyder, 0-3 and two strikeouts, takes a high and side fast ball, one and one.
- 3:00:18One ball, one strike.
- 3:00:20You know, scouting of teams is not relegated just to football alone.
- 3:00:25Both of these baseball teams have been very well scouted.
- 3:00:29The Yankees by the Dodgers and the Dodgers by the Yankees.
- 3:00:35And a lot of this effective pitching may be directly attributable to the sharp eyes of the scouts in the last two weeks
- 3:00:42and how they have constructed and managed to shut and then stangle to have various hitters pitch to.
- 3:00:54One ball, one strike.
- 3:00:58Reynolds delivers high outside for ball two.
- 3:01:11Two and one, two gone.
- 3:01:15Reese leading down on second.
- 3:01:21Man, a run doesn't look very big to either one of these teams, does it?
- 3:01:27Two on pitches, a curve over the outside for a call second strike.
- 3:01:32Now you can get the suspense of the crowd.
- 3:01:34Here they are, roaring on each pitch.
- 3:01:39I was a little curve ball over the outside, two and two.
- 3:01:49Snyder, trim figure, slenderish.
- 3:01:54Great body turn, hip pivot, where he gets his power from.
- 3:02:01Two to pitch, slow on in this, back ball in there for three and the run is turned it loose.
- 3:02:06And he's now a four.
- 3:02:08The Houston eights has nine strikeouts.
- 3:02:17So as we go on to the last half of the eighth inning, the score is,
- 3:02:20what for nothing and New York nothing.
- 3:02:25But I tell you, he's hit three home runs per game five times in his career.
- 3:02:30Well, you know his name is Johnny Myers of the Yankees.
- 3:02:33In Johnny's experience, no other razor blade compares with the Gillette blue blade in any respect.
- 3:02:39From your own experience, you know that the sharper and smoother finished a blade is,
- 3:02:44The quicker and easier it shaves.
- 3:02:46So get Gillette blue blades, five for a quarter.
- 3:02:50They are so sharp and so smoothly finished that they give the slickest, most refreshing shaves imaginable.
- 3:02:56Now for extra convenience at no extra cost,
- 3:02:59buy Gillette blue blades in the modern Gillette dispenser that zips them out on raft.
- 3:03:04You get 20 blades, 40 shaving edges for 98 cents, 10 blades for 49 cents.
- 3:03:11Look sharp, feel sharp, be sharp. Use Gillette blue blades with the sharpest edges ever home.
- 3:03:26Well, here we are.
- 3:03:28Seven and a half innings disposed of. Eight teams struck out hitters.
- 3:03:32And that tells you the big story.
- 3:03:34So we move on to the last of the eighths. No score.
- 3:03:37The first up to the Yankees is the rookie right fielder, Cliff Mapes.
- 3:03:42Had a great year last year out of Kansas City.
- 3:03:44That's hand batter.
- 3:03:46He struck out both times. He's been up against Newcomb.
- 3:03:49Now Newcomb bending to his past delivers.
- 3:03:52Fast ball high outside, ball one.
- 3:03:54Mapes ran up on the ball as though he would try and pull a bunt.
- 3:03:56Beat it out for a base hit.
- 3:03:58Outfield is swung into right.
- 3:04:01Play him to call.
- 3:04:03Cappinella down to give the sign to big umpire, Cal Hubbard, back of the cross position of the receiver.
- 3:04:08The right hander throws.
- 3:04:10Curve in there for a call strike.
- 3:04:14One and one.
- 3:04:18Hubbard so big when he called a strike he looked like the Statue of Liberty holding that torch up there.
- 3:04:26Of course, I would say he's dressed a little differently.
- 3:04:32One and one fits. Bunted. Missed. Strike two.
- 3:04:36Mapes tried to bunt.
- 3:04:38An inside slider.
- 3:04:39By the hands, one ball, two strikes.
- 3:04:43Boy, this is really getting tough.
- 3:04:48Of course, you never know until the ball game is over the answer to a tough game.
- 3:04:53The answer is to a tough problem, tough whiskers.
- 3:04:56One word, Gillette. You know that all the time.
- 3:04:59One ball, two strikes.
- 3:05:01Throw.
- 3:05:02Throw in.
- 3:05:03In this strike three, the ball was tipped and Cappinella held it and it swirled around.
- 3:05:08Swish that bat. You could see that he was strong about it.
- 3:05:11Ten strikeouts for Newport.
- 3:05:13Nineteen in the game and the Yankee ball friend is now going.
- 3:05:16Right hander Fred Sanford and left hander Joe Page are throwing.
- 3:05:21Which indicates that manager Stingle might want to pitch it for Reynolds if he saw he had reason to do so during the last of the eighth.
- 3:05:28But let's let results write the story as it takes place.
- 3:05:33Jerick Coleman works well up on the handle of that bat.
- 3:05:37Slendrish, rookies, second baseman right hand hitter struck out twice.
- 3:05:40Takes a fast ball high inside.
- 3:05:43One and one.
- 3:05:44One out.
- 3:05:45No score.
- 3:05:47As dark as it is this afternoon, you realize the wisdom of starting these games at one o'clock.
- 3:05:52Tomorrow's game will be at one just as though this one.
- 3:05:54That gives you all the time that you can get.
- 3:05:57Sunday's game of course according to the New York State law will be two o'clock.
- 3:06:00All the others will be one o'clock.
- 3:06:02And of course air time.
- 3:06:04Best blistered Gillette fifteen minutes earlier.
- 3:06:06Big Newcomb, plunked once, twice, throws.
- 3:06:08Fast ball's swung on.
- 3:06:09Drill down the right.
- 3:06:10She's in there for a base hit.
- 3:06:12Roller has to play the ball on the count.
- 3:06:14And there is Coleman on his way to second.
- 3:06:15He's in there for a double.
- 3:06:17A solid line drive double.
- 3:06:19He hit an outside fast ball sharply.
- 3:06:29Now the Yankees come up with a very solid pressure in the last of the eighth inning.
- 3:06:35And Reynolds is coming on to hit for himself.
- 3:06:38So with one man gone, Coleman lashes out and lines one into the right field corner for a solid double.
- 3:06:45And there is Coach Clyde Soukforth who goes out to the mound for Manager Bert Scharton to talk to pitchers when they are in battle.
- 3:06:52Souk is going out to the mound to talk to Big Newcomb right now.
- 3:06:56Reynolds has a double and a single for the two times he's been up.
- 3:07:00One man gone.
- 3:07:02It is no score.
- 3:07:03And the Yankees now have a real serious threat in the last of the eighth inning.
- 3:07:07Soukforth going back into the bench.
- 3:07:11He's carried whatever message Manager Scharton wanted sent out there.
- 3:07:14Manager Scharton, like Connie Mack of the Athletics, manages in street clothes.
- 3:07:19Therefore, under baseball law, he cannot step out on the playing field in the game.
- 3:07:23He can't go on that field unless you're in the baseball suit or the umpire's blues.
- 3:07:27All right pitcher, Reynolds is up.
- 3:07:30Two for two.
- 3:07:31Right hander Newcomb delivers.
- 3:07:33Curve ball on the outside for a called strike.
- 3:07:35Reynolds right hand hitter.
- 3:07:38The Brooklyn bullpen is of course now sprung into activity.
- 3:07:46Attender Joe Hatton is down there and right handers Banner and Erskine.
- 3:07:52Yankee bullpen stops working.
- 3:07:53Reynolds up there hitting.
- 3:07:54Swings at a curve, doesn't get it.
- 3:07:56And the outside, it's fake too.
- 3:07:59No balls, two strikes.
- 3:08:01One man gone.
- 3:08:08Every pitch, heavily weighted.
- 3:08:13There's big potentials out here riding now.
- 3:08:15No score.
- 3:08:17Sun breaks out again.
- 3:08:19Plenty of light pitch.
- 3:08:20Pass ball low outside.
- 3:08:22Reynolds refused to chase it.
- 3:08:23He had another down to his right to hold it up one and two.
- 3:08:26Coleman who can run.
- 3:08:28Leading down off second and is constantly repeating to Frankie Crissetti the fact that one man is out.
- 3:08:36That's very important.
- 3:08:37That means the ball is hit ahead of him.
- 3:08:38He stays at second base.
- 3:08:40One and two pitch.
- 3:08:41Outside a curve ball for a ball two.
- 3:08:43And Captain Miller had to really go down to his right to keep that ball from getting loose.
- 3:08:48So it's a great crowd of 66,224.
- 3:08:52And they're all looking on up there on the edge of their seats.
- 3:08:57Like to see Commissioner Channels on the edge of his seat leaning on the rail in front of his box.
- 3:09:03Boy, this is something worth really looking at with both eyes.
- 3:09:09So Newcomb getting ready to take dead aim.
- 3:09:12Reynolds leaning in.
- 3:09:13The two-two pitch.
- 3:09:15Strike three.
- 3:09:16Curve on the outside.
- 3:09:17That's just got it.
- 3:09:19So Reynolds turns and walks away at the first time.
- 3:09:22But he's been turned back from the plate.
- 3:09:23Eleven strikeouts for Don Newcomb.
- 3:09:26Twenty strikeouts in the ball game.
- 3:09:30Why aren't there any runs?
- 3:09:31Twenty strikeouts.
- 3:09:33That's good enough.
- 3:09:38And now a great little money player, Phil Rizzuto up there.
- 3:09:48Coleman.
- 3:09:49Second base.
- 3:09:50He's ready to go.
- 3:09:51He's repeating now.
- 3:09:52It's a third base coach, Grazetti.
- 3:09:54That is with the wig wagging his fingers too hard, which means you're on or anything.
- 3:09:58No score.
- 3:09:59Newcomb throws.
- 3:10:00Curve swung on.
- 3:10:01There's a high fly ball in the center.
- 3:10:02Slatter comes in a step.
- 3:10:03He's going back two steps.
- 3:10:04He's under it.
- 3:10:05He waits.
- 3:10:06He has it.
- 3:10:07That's all for the eighth inning threat.
- 3:10:16Well, that is a very good threat that went past the boards in the eighth inning.
- 3:10:20So here we come into the ninth inning.
- 3:10:23I'd say the ball game is even up.
- 3:10:26Each team had a fine threat in the eighth inning, as Rizz reached second base, if you'll recall,
- 3:10:31with one out in the eighth, a single and a steal.
- 3:10:33The Yankees had a man in the eighth inning.
- 3:10:35Coleman got there with one out.
- 3:10:37He's two bagger and never got passed.
- 3:10:39So it continues to be the two.
- 3:10:43Fans, to enjoy a world of shaving satisfaction for almost a song,
- 3:10:48fire the famous Gillette Tech razor and fire the easy shaving Gillette Blue Blades for only 49 cents.
- 3:10:54The Gillette Tech sets up whiskers as a barber does,
- 3:10:57smooths your skin ahead of the shaving edge,
- 3:11:00and skims off the stubble with light gentle strokes.
- 3:11:03Believe me, you get shaves that are shaves and save money too.
- 3:11:10Well, I notice you're digging down in that red book.
- 3:11:12I know you're looking for aggregate strikeouts.
- 3:11:14That is, most strikeouts by everybody in a World Series game.
- 3:11:17Is there anything noted on that?
- 3:11:19We've been checking. As a matter of fact, our record book doesn't list it,
- 3:11:22but we went checking with some of the veteran scribes,
- 3:11:25and they went back into other records.
- 3:11:27And in 1944, 22 strikeouts by the two teams in one ball game.
- 3:11:32That was the Cardinals-Browns World Series.
- 3:11:34We'll give you the pictures a little bit later.
- 3:11:36All right, we've got 20 strikeouts missing at the end of eighth.
- 3:11:39Now Robinson, his first step in the ninth inning.
- 3:11:42He's off the three.
- 3:11:44Last time up, hit the ball hard in the maggio, made a fine galloping catch in deep left center.
- 3:11:48Jack ticks a curve, over for a called strike.
- 3:11:57No balls, one strike.
- 3:12:04The strikeouts that Mel was referring to were 10 by Galehouse and 12 by Mort Cooper.
- 3:12:08Now Robinson hits the ground ball down towards short.
- 3:12:10The Brazil charger throws to first, and Jack is out by a wide margin, about four steps.
- 3:12:14So one up and one gone, top of sixth inning.
- 3:12:18So 22 strikeouts back in the All-St. Louis World Series.
- 3:12:23Ten by Galehouse and 12 by Mort Cooper.
- 3:12:27We've had 20 so far today.
- 3:12:32One gone, top of the ninth.
- 3:12:34But we're not citing that that is the record of aggregate strikeouts.
- 3:12:37We just haven't been able to put our finger on anything any closer than that.
- 3:12:40Gene Hermanski, 0 for 2, swings and there's a high pop fly.
- 3:12:44Short step resuto, getting under it, under it, and makes the grab.
- 3:12:48On the inside grass, he's got a short two-man retired.
- 3:12:51Top of the ninth, there's Randall's continuous pitching.
- 3:12:56And Carl Forello, who is 0 for 2, face on ball, got on with an error, then popped it to first, stepping in.
- 3:13:02Two gone, top of the ninth.
- 3:13:06So he settles down to give the sign.
- 3:13:08Says step into Forello and Forello grins.
- 3:13:13I feel back at the right, they're not playing Carl to pull.
- 3:13:16He doesn't pull too much toward left as the roll.
- 3:13:19And with this scorn injury, which prevents his full pivot, they don't think to pull at all.
- 3:13:22There's a foul ball out of play.
- 3:13:24Nothing in one, no balls, one strike.
- 3:13:36Nothing in one, two down, no score, ninth inning.
- 3:13:43Crowd is watching and waiting.
- 3:13:46Something to watch and much to be waited for.
- 3:13:49Right hand there, Randall's pitches a curve low and away.
- 3:13:52One ball, one strike.
- 3:13:54Burr just batted the ball down, picks it up, throws it out to the mound.
- 3:14:02One and one.
- 3:14:06Forello, choke sets take just about half an inch.
- 3:14:11Randall's pumped once, deals overhand, fastball good on the outside of over the knees for a call, second strike.
- 3:14:18One and two.
- 3:14:25This is the great game that Randall's has pitched in his entire career.
- 3:14:35Right hander pumping, dealing sidearm curveball, missing low outside.
- 3:14:40Two and two, two balls, two strikes.
- 3:14:42He leaned toward third when he cut that one loose.
- 3:14:48Two and two, top of the ninth.
- 3:14:51Brooklyn, the visiting ball club here at Yankee Stadium, had bat.
- 3:14:54Nobody has a run.
- 3:14:57Only one man has reached third base safely.
- 3:14:59He reached it in the second inning for the Dodgers with two out.
- 3:15:02Two to pitch, swung on, fouled into the stands, back of first base, top foul ball.
- 3:15:09Two balls, two strikes.
- 3:15:16Randall's very calmly rubbing up the new ball, standing at the back of the mound.
- 3:15:27Big crowd is so quiet that you can hear the piping, shrill voices of the infielders as they holler encouragement to the pitcher.
- 3:15:35Randall's takes the ball, feet spread.
- 3:15:42Randall's takes the sign, pumps once, delivers, curveball back on the screen.
- 3:15:46It's still two and two.
- 3:15:48Two balls, two strikes.
- 3:15:52Two gone.
- 3:15:59The guy that was asking for a battle today really got it.
- 3:16:10Apparently nothing is going to come easier to a winner this year in baseball.
- 3:16:17Two to pitch, swung on as a high fly ball into short right center field.
- 3:16:21Right fielder Mape's coming in under it.
- 3:16:24He has it, so that's all for Brello who just keeps right on limping out toward that field, picks up his guard.
- 3:16:32And we get ready to go into the last half of the ninth inning.
- 3:16:37Last of the ninth inning.
- 3:16:39Nobody has any run.
- 3:16:41Ed Bigmulcombe, sloping out to the mound.
- 3:16:45Well, Brother Allen, come over here now to the microphone and have you been seeing this thing?
- 3:16:53I tell you, I've just been sitting here real amazed at two great pitchers, given perhaps two of the best performances of their careers.
- 3:17:03The one, comparatively brief, Don Newcomb, who has come like a meteor this year, and Allie Reynolds, a veteran,
- 3:17:11who actually might have gone through the first nine innings with a one hitter,
- 3:17:17who might have had a no hitter going to the eighth inning when re-singled because, as you mentioned, and as I mentioned earlier,
- 3:17:25Johnny Lindell overran Jorgensen's drive, which he might have caught.
- 3:17:29And Big Don Newcomb, who has been almost as stingy with his base hit, certainly when he meant anything,
- 3:17:35and who has been striking them out right and left and firing and firing and firing.
- 3:17:39And it's just been a tremendous ball game all the way.
- 3:17:43And this is what I call baseball as the people have loved it through the years.
- 3:17:49Well, this is a very fit ball game for a World Series.
- 3:17:53In other words, the two big teams, and here's the big game and the two big pitches, and here we go.
- 3:17:58All right, Tommy Henrik, first step, last of the ninth.
- 3:18:00We follow for Barra and then by DiMaggio.
- 3:18:02So the Yankees have their big hitters now in the line.
- 3:18:05Newcomb on the mound, the outfield deep toward right.
- 3:18:08Henrik off for three, left hand batter.
- 3:18:10Takes a curve that is outside for a ball one.
- 3:18:17Henrik swings in the end.
- 3:18:21Right side of the infield, it's full depth.
- 3:18:23Hodges the first base and steps over toward the line.
- 3:18:25Newcomb's pitch has this curve down across the shins for ball two.
- 3:18:30Two balls, no strikes.
- 3:18:33Two and all.
- 3:18:39Newcomb looking into the dirt.
- 3:18:42He has a rather odd idiosyncrasy on the mound and he's pumping with 35 in a second.
- 3:18:47Two-nothing pitch is hung on.
- 3:18:49Drilled out toward right field, going way back.
- 3:18:51That's the ball game, a home run for Tommy Henrik.
- 3:18:55There's Henrik now between first and second.
- 3:18:57Bill Dickey, the first base, puts almost just on his back and then realized that's a tender back and he better not.
- 3:19:02Henrik's coming in the third.
- 3:19:03He is cutting his home run home.
- 3:19:06Look at him grim.
- 3:19:07Big as a slice of watermelon.
- 3:19:09Wow.
- 3:19:11All reliable.
- 3:19:12Hit one.
- 3:19:13That's all.
- 3:19:24Well, they call him all reliable and they're not joking.
- 3:19:27He hit a two-nothing pitch.
- 3:19:30Wow.
- 3:19:31Way back up there in the straightaway right field stand.
- 3:19:34So Henrik, who hit a home run in the eighth inning Sunday to guarantee the Yankees a cushion to work on against the Red Sox to get into the World Series,
- 3:19:43now gives the Yankees a one-game cushion with a very dramatic home run with a startling suddenness of a pistol shot.
- 3:19:52The denouement, the climax, was reached.
- 3:19:56So the Dodgers walk off the field, expected to start for the exits, and the Yankees did a wild war dance as they went off.
- 3:20:03And Henrik, I don't believe he ever enjoyed running a home run any more than he ran nothing.
- 3:20:08So that's that.
- 3:20:11And now we're going to switch over to Mel and have him give you a recapitulation on the ballgame.
- 3:20:16Pitching as Reynolds walking out to the mound.
- 3:20:19Well, Mel, how about Henrik?
- 3:20:21You've seen him do that many times, haven't you?
- 3:20:23I've seen Henrik do that all this year.
- 3:20:25As a matter of fact, he hit a home run opening day this year to win a ballgame for the Yankees.
- 3:20:32He hit a home run on the closing day to clinch it.
- 3:20:36And he hits a home run on the opening day of the 1949 World Series to win the first game of it.
- 3:20:43He is one of your old pros who's been around a long while.
- 3:20:48And that was his fourth World Series home run.
- 3:20:53And I don't think that there's ever been a home run of his entire life that he has ever enjoyed more than that one.
- 3:21:01Sixty-six thousand two hundred and twenty-four people sitting there and with the suddenness of a bullet out of a cannon,
- 3:21:08as Red described it so aptly, and precisely for you, the ballgame was over.
- 3:21:13And here I think that the entire assemblage here, including Red, including myself, were expecting an extra inning ballgame.
- 3:21:23You just began to feel that perhaps it was going to go on and on and on.
- 3:21:27You didn't know when the breaking point would come, and then it came just suddenly.
- 3:21:31And that's the way it happens when you get down to that last inning or you get into that sudden death period,
- 3:21:37and the home team, the last of the night, of course, is in that situation, and boom, there it was.
- 3:21:42It was a tough break for our gallant guy, Don Newcomb, who came back with just two days' rest.
- 3:21:49Red has seen him pitch many times this year.
- 3:21:51I had the pleasure of watching him shut out the New York Giants on a night game,
- 3:21:55and his fastball was blazing.
- 3:21:58But to me, he pitched a tremendous game today, even a better one, as he struck out one Yankee after another
- 3:22:04and wound up with a total of 11 strikeouts, two short, of Howard Emke's single-game record of 13,
- 3:22:11as we told you set back in 1928, 1929 on October the 8th, when he pitched against the Cubs for the Philadelphia Athletics.
- 3:22:21Allie Reynolds came along with nine strikeouts, and though Reynolds was in more frequent trouble than was Newcomb
- 3:22:27because of more wildness, Reynolds, having walked some four men while Don Newcomb did not walk a man,
- 3:22:34and has an opportunity, perhaps, if you like your statistics, to join Kyle Mays, a Yankee pitcher many years ago,
- 3:22:42who in 1921 did not allow any bases on balls in a single-world series of 26 consecutive innings of pitching
- 3:22:51that went through three ball games. So Newcomb went through one without allowing a base on balls.
- 3:22:56Reynolds, on the other hand, allowed four, and as a result was in frequent trouble here and there, and went to many 3-2 counts.
- 3:23:02Newcomb rarely ever went through a 3-2 count comparatively, as he had his control down a real sharp.
- 3:23:10An arrow by Jerry Coleman allowed Reynolds to be in trouble, and although this is, again, repetition,
- 3:23:18it's merely from the standpoint of reporting, Johnny Jorgensen's first-inning double was a ball that all observers will tell you
- 3:23:26should have been caught in the normal course of event. That's part of the game that it wasn't,
- 3:23:29but we're merely indicating the type of game that Reynolds pitched that as far as his pitching was concerned,
- 3:23:35he should have had an 0-hitter going into the eighth inning. P. Ree Reese's single was one that there was no question about at all.
- 3:23:41A clean base hit all the way, and Reynolds wound up pitching a two-hit ball game.
- 3:23:48And if you want to decide on the basis of hits, the Yankees had five, the Dodgers two, and therefore the Yankees deserved to win.
- 3:23:58You can do it that way, but of course that's not a good way of looking at it.
- 3:24:01You had two tremendous pitching performances today, and when you go on like that, it was just as the game Sunday between the Yanks and the Red Sox.
- 3:24:11One of those two teams had to lose, one had to win the pennant. Somebody had to win it.
- 3:24:16It couldn't go on forever, and that's the way this game was today.
- 3:24:19It was a brilliantly played game all the way through, and it was just one of the finest World Series games that I can ever recall seeing in many a year.
- 3:24:30So your total showed the Yankees one run, five hits, one error, and four men left on base, while the Brooklyn Dodgers were blanked with two hits, did not make an error, and had six men left on base.
- 3:24:46And now fans make a date to be with us by way of radio tomorrow for the second game of the series, and we'll have fun.
- 3:24:52Tuning time will be 12.45 Eastern Standard Time, the same as today.
- 3:24:59So our hats are off to the Brooklyn Dodgers, to the New York Yankees, and to Allie Reynolds of Oklahoma City, who pitched a brilliant two-hitter,
- 3:25:10and with the help of Tommy Henrich, bested Don Newcomb and the Dodgers in an equally brilliantly pitched game, one to nothing.
- 3:25:17So until tomorrow, smooth sailing, smooth shaving, and good afternoon from your host, the Gillette Safety Racer Company, Red Barber, and yours truly, Mel Allen.
- 3:25:28We wish to thank the makers of Philip Morris Cigarettes and Alka Seltzer, co-sponsors of Queen for a Day, for delaying their broadcast time today, in order that we might bring you the World Series.
- 3:25:38Queen for a Day follows station identification. We also wish to thank the makers of La Rosa Macaroni, Spaghetti, and Egg Noodles, sponsors of La Rosa Hollywood Theatre of Stars, for relinquishing their broadcast time today.
