- 0:00Speaker 1: Hi, Katie. You're back. Hi, guys.
- 0:01Speaker 2: I am back. Tell people what Lost Lands is.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Lost Lands is my annual music festival. It's been going
- 0:07Speaker 1: on for nine years. Life-size dinosaurs, heavy bass, and dubstep
- 0:10Speaker 1: created by my favorite DJ in the world named Excision.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Where is it?
- 0:14Speaker 1: It's out in a tiny little town called Thornville, Ohio.
- 0:19Speaker 1: thousand people or so.
- 0:20Speaker 2: No, you've gone to every one of these.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Every single show. Every single one.
- 0:23Speaker 2: How many years is it again?
- 0:25Speaker 1: This is what this was its ninth year. So it's
- 0:27Speaker 1: going to be careful. They do swear. Just a heads up.
- 0:32Speaker 1: This is the ninth year. Next year is the 10th
- 0:34Speaker 1: year I've been going. It started in 2017. I was
- 0:38Speaker 1: an intern back in the day and it was, you know,
- 0:40Speaker 1: I left a week after I did had my knee injury,
- 0:44Speaker 1: came back and they were like, we need to do
- 0:45Speaker 1: an MRI. And that's what I found out. I needed surgery.
- 0:48Speaker 1: They asked if I had done anything, and I said no. Anyways,
- 0:50Speaker 1: ninth year, super fun. I love it. I normally do
- 0:53Speaker 1: RV camping, but we were saving money, so we did
- 0:56Speaker 1: just normal camping. This was my camping setup. If you
- 0:59Speaker 1: go to x96. com forward slash live. That's a pretty nice
- 1:02Speaker 1: setup you got there. It was a great setup, and
- 1:05Speaker 1: it held up. I will tell you that. It held
- 1:07Speaker 1: up for how much rain we got. That is main stage,
- 1:10Speaker 1: and that's my crew that I went with. We had
- 1:13Speaker 1: a blast. That was the crater stage. It was super cool.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Lots of lasers. That tower itself, when I saw it
- 1:20Speaker 1: during the day, I counted how many lasers were on
- 1:22Speaker 1: the tower. And then I went looking for the border
- 1:24Speaker 1: of where it stops the lasers. There was not one.
- 1:28Speaker 1: It was insane. Unfortunately, that got cut off as a T-Rex.
- 1:32Speaker 1: That's me and my Dilophosaurus. I take a picture with
- 1:34Speaker 1: it every single year. I have nine photos with it,
- 1:36Speaker 1: not going to lie. So those are all a bunch
- 1:38Speaker 1: of different dinosaurs you see.
- 1:40Speaker 2: What are they made out of?
- 1:42Speaker 1: Foam, mainly. They're really good foam, kind of like you
- 1:46Speaker 1: see at haunted houses and stuff like that.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Yeah, they're sculptures.
- 1:49Speaker 1: And that is DJ's visualizer tech, who I have run
- 1:53Speaker 1: into multiple different times in different places, and he actually
- 1:57Speaker 1: remembers us now. The drones were amazing, super fun, super cool.
- 2:00Speaker 2: Drone spelling out lost ones?
- 2:02Speaker 1: Drone spelling out lost ones.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Can you slow this down?
- 2:05Speaker 1: It's an automatic thing, but I wish I could slow
- 2:07Speaker 1: it down. So lots of lasers, lots of things. And
- 2:10Speaker 1: the Mosasaur. To top it all off, so beautiful.
- 2:13Speaker 2: How many people go to Lost Lands?
- 2:16Speaker 1: Last year, I believe it was about 65,000. It's definitely
- 2:20Speaker 1: gotten bigger, more crowded, so I think there was close
- 2:22Speaker 1: to 75,000 people this year. It's massive. It started with
- 2:26Speaker 1: a very small 25,000 people setup. It was very small.
- 2:30Speaker 1: Two stages, that's it. And it has grown to about
- 2:34Speaker 1: six different stages. And Excision has done a lot of
- 2:37Speaker 1: work on the grounds, including building a tunnel under the freeway.
- 2:40Speaker 1: because we used to have to shut the freeway down
- 2:42Speaker 1: to cross it.
- 2:43Speaker 2: Oh, okay. Do I remember you showed us some video
- 2:47Speaker 2: from one year. There were, like, dinosaurs walking around. There
- 2:51Speaker 2: were people in these dinosaurs.
- 2:52Speaker 1: So, yeah, Excision owns at least two different of those
- 2:56Speaker 1: raptor outfits, the very extravagant ones that sit over, and
- 2:59Speaker 1: then you walk, and you're, like, strapped into the legs.
- 3:02Speaker 1: And they'll walk through the crowd. It's super fun. It's
- 3:04Speaker 1: really cool. I've gotten a couple of photos with them
- 3:07Speaker 1: years ago. But mentioning the crater stage, this is what
- 3:11Speaker 1: it looks like. Dawson's got another video for you. This
- 3:14Speaker 1: is what it would look like when you weren't at
- 3:17Speaker 1: the stage.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Right there.
- 3:19Speaker 1: So people driving on the freeway could see this from
- 3:22Speaker 1: about 30 miles away. It was absolutely insane. But it
- 3:28Speaker 1: downpoured on us two different nights.
- 3:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:31Speaker 1: One of the first nights we were there, it happened
- 3:32Speaker 1: about 2 a.m. I was so scared. Well, that's the
- 3:35Speaker 1: perfect time. I was so scared things were going to collapse.
- 3:37Speaker 2: So when does the entertainment sort of start?
- 3:40Speaker 1: So there are early entries. So we did Tuesday early entry,
- 3:43Speaker 1: which is the first day you can enter into the
- 3:45Speaker 1: grounds and then set up your camping. Music does start
- 3:47Speaker 1: on Wednesday, but mainly what became an annual tradition is
- 3:51Speaker 1: called the pre-party back-to-back, which is about 40 different DJs
- 3:56Speaker 1: that just go back-to-back and switch on stage.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I guess what I'm asking, too, is how late in
- 4:02Speaker 2: the night.
- 4:02Speaker 1: Do these shows go? Friday through Sunday, it goes until
- 4:06Speaker 1: 3 a.m. So the last artist is on at 2 a.m.
- 4:09Speaker 1: And unfortunately, the last night where the two last artists
- 4:12Speaker 1: I was hoping to see got rained out because... It
- 4:15Speaker 1: got flooded. It turned into mudlands. I mean, my boots
- 4:17Speaker 1: are still absolutely covered in mud. But it was a blast.
- 4:22Speaker 1: My boots held up. None of my crew fell in
- 4:24Speaker 1: any of the mud. We all survived it. Nobody ended
- 4:27Speaker 1: up in the medical tent?
- 4:28Speaker 2: No. Your tent didn't go down?
- 4:29Speaker 1: No sprained ankles, you guys. Oh, good. No sprained ankles.
- 4:32Speaker 1: That was a tradition for like four years.
- 4:34Speaker 2: Um, so didn't you used to rent a motor home?
- 4:37Speaker 1: Yeah. So normally we would rent a, an RV and
- 4:39Speaker 1: we would go and we'd do RV camping with hookups.
- 4:41Speaker 1: Cause it was kind of our best bet this year.
- 4:43Speaker 1: We had not the whole crew went, which was kind
- 4:46Speaker 1: of heartbreaking, but I did still get a chance to
- 4:48Speaker 1: FaceTime them during the show, which was really cool. Um,
- 4:51Speaker 1: so we just did GA camping and, and just did
- 4:54Speaker 1: a beautiful setup with our own grill and the tents
- 4:57Speaker 1: and everything. And it was great. Made me realize I
- 4:59Speaker 1: want to get a cot, not a blow up bed. Yeah,
- 5:02Speaker 1: because those are uncomfortable.
- 5:03Speaker 2: But and pots are pretty lightweight. Yeah. Easy to pack.
- 5:07Speaker 1: Well, also, they don't get wet on the bottom if
- 5:09Speaker 1: anything kind of trickles into your tent. So but we
- 5:13Speaker 1: had a blast. I go every single year. I'm hoping
- 5:15Speaker 1: 10 years going to be really extravagant. But it's it
- 5:20Speaker 1: is my favorite place. It's we call it dubstep Disneyland.
- 5:24Speaker 1: A lot of the time, most of us do. And
- 5:27Speaker 1: it has one of the best feelings and atmospheres at
- 5:31Speaker 1: any festival I've ever been to. You've made a lot
- 5:33Speaker 1: of friends there.
- 5:34Speaker 2: I have.
- 5:34Speaker 1: I actually even... Kerry Bailey went, our old intern. He went.
- 5:39Speaker 1: We ran into each other that time. He was there
- 5:42Speaker 1: this year? Two years ago. Two years ago he was
- 5:44Speaker 1: there and we ran into each other. We sent you
- 5:46Speaker 1: a photo because we thought it would be funny. But it's...
- 5:50Speaker 1: I love going to... It's my passion to maybe... be
- 5:53Speaker 1: up there on that stage someday if I ever get
- 5:55Speaker 1: good enough at making my own music, but also maybe
- 5:58Speaker 1: interviewing the DJs and stuff. I did just start my
- 6:01Speaker 1: own EDM show, so that would be really fun to
- 6:03Speaker 1: feature there. My favorite set was a DJ named Liquid Stranger.
- 6:09Speaker 1: Liquid Stranger. Yes, he is from a different country that
- 6:13Speaker 1: I can't think of right now, but he is out
- 6:16Speaker 1: of Sweden. I think he's from Sweden is what it is.
- 6:18Speaker 1: But he is an absolute sweetheart, and he makes some
- 6:20Speaker 1: really fun wubby music. What's that?
- 6:23Speaker 2: Wait, what music? Wubby.
- 6:25Speaker 1: So it's weird and wonky and not necessarily heavy headbanging,
- 6:31Speaker 1: but more just like.
- 6:32Speaker 2: So I don't know a lot. I know almost nothing
- 6:35Speaker 2: about this kind of music. Is it, there's not really
- 6:38Speaker 2: a lot of lyrics or vocals.
- 6:40Speaker 1: A lot of the time there's not a lot of
- 6:41Speaker 1: vocals you get. There are a fair amount of songs
- 6:44Speaker 1: that do have locals or even just like little tracks
- 6:46Speaker 1: of things. Um, but mainly it's just a lot of
- 6:49Speaker 1: melodic stuff.
- 6:50Speaker 2: And is it usually just one guy on stage?
- 6:53Speaker 1: So there are some DJ duo groups like Zed's dead.
- 6:56Speaker 1: You got slander who I got to see this weekend. Um,
- 6:59Speaker 1: So there are or there's a mix of DJs that
- 7:02Speaker 1: kind of create a second different persona. And so they
- 7:05Speaker 1: do something together and their own solo stuff.
- 7:08Speaker 2: And you were there how many days?
- 7:09Speaker 1: I was there from Tuesday through Monday, so almost an
- 7:13Speaker 1: entire week, six days.
- 7:14Speaker 2: I don't know. It sounds like hell to me.
- 7:16Speaker 1: I saw the Chainsmokers. They were our special guests this year.
- 7:19Speaker 1: Never thought I'd see them in my life. It was
- 7:20Speaker 1: strange to see them at Lost Lands. Where can people
- 7:23Speaker 1: see this video and stuff? Go to my social medias,
- 7:26Speaker 1: my Facebook or my Instagram, Captain underscore Katie, C-A-P-T underscore Katie,
- 7:30Speaker 1: and you can check it all there. Also, go follow
- 7:32Speaker 1: my EDM show, Elevated Evenings, on Facebook and Instagram, and
- 7:35Speaker 1: you can see everything else there that's going on. It's exciting,
- 7:39Speaker 1: and I can't wait for next year. It's already being planned.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Not even going to lie.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Thank you very much.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Welcome back.
- 7:43Speaker 2: Katie, for short, Katie, our producer, I'm glad you had
- 7:47Speaker 2: a good time and you were safe and sound.
- 7:49Speaker 1: I was.
- 7:50Speaker 2: And it rejuvenates your soul.
- 7:51Speaker 1: It does. It really, like, it may seem like it
- 7:53Speaker 1: takes me out because it's so much work. I'm up
- 7:56Speaker 1: for nearly 20 hours, but, like, it really is just
- 7:59Speaker 1: my big release of the year. So thanks, guys.
- 8:01Speaker 2: Thank you very much.
