- 1:34This one's called the Pixie Picker Pickle Case. Ladies and gentlemen, we
- 1:42take you now behind the scenes of a police headquarters in a great American city.
- 1:47We're under the cold, glaring lights with us before us, the innocent,
- 1:51the vagrant, the thief, the murderery. This is the lineup.
- 2:23Hi, Matt's got himself a job. Boys pulled in fifty two suspects today,
- 2:30and thirteen more came in from the other divisions. Good as these girls
- 2:32up front, Talbert girls on the left. There, Ash was bringing in
- 2:37the surf Phoenie girl and Barbara Pattins over on the side. Oh yeah,
- 2:40I see you. Well, I'll tell him I have to sit with the
- 2:43Talbot girl. You take Steason, I'll take care of Pattons. Okay,
- 2:46let's see a litter bit. Oh Barbara, Hello, luten heasy caught him?
- 2:53Oh, we don't know. I hoping. Feeling all right now?
- 2:57Oh? I feel fine, real fine? Eat hurt me much? Really,
- 3:00that's good? Tell me. Yeah. You know those other girls Broom
- 3:06just from their pictures in the paper. When you first came in, I
- 3:08thought you were going to sit with one of them instead of me. Those
- 3:13men with them are only sergeants, aren't They only sergeants not a full lieutenant.
- 3:20While the audience room, may I have your attention to thank you.
- 3:24My name is Greb, Sergeant Matt Grebb. I'll explain the line up to
- 3:28you. Each of the suspects you will see will be number. I'll call
- 3:31off a number, their name and charge. If you have any questions or
- 3:36identifications, please remember the number as signed of the prisoner. As I call
- 3:38his name at the end of each line. When I asked for questions or
- 3:43identifications, call out the number if you're sure or not too sure on the
- 3:47suspect. Having held the opposers have took your name, will assist you.
- 3:52They're seated among you. Please big top with your questions or identifications. When
- 3:57the presiders lead here, they are sent to the watch room and dressed back
- 4:00into their jail clothes. It makes it quite difficult to bring them back after
- 4:03they leave here. The questions I asked these suspects familiar to get an actual
- 4:08tone of voice, so do not pay too much attention to the answers.
- 4:10And as they often line, bring on the line, all right, boys,
- 4:15keep it moving right overhead of the end of the stage. Come on
- 4:18all the way overboard. That's right. If that would be looking figure or
- 4:25somethink. When I call your names, step out to the circle. When
- 4:28I ask the questions, talk up so the people in the back of the
- 4:30room can hear you. All right. Number one, William Green vacuancy other
- 4:38people when you live, William, Come on, talk up William, talk
- 4:41up us along with the back of the room. No play. Why to
- 4:45sleep last night in a park? Conferral boulevard? What do you do?
- 4:48What you work? I get along? Do you ever think of getting a
- 4:51steady job? William? Where the world coming to an n nay day?
- 4:57Now? I should spend my free time working on I'm stupid job. Lots
- 5:01of people in the same world with you. They all were Gummidge, all
- 5:04of Gummidge. I'm playing it smart. You were in the county jail ten
- 5:09months this past year, eight months the year before. Yeah, you're playing
- 5:15it smart, all right, okay, step back Number two Theodore Swan two
- 5:20ninety feelings to registered. I just got in town. I'm not going to
- 5:25register. B just got in town. You were in town long enough to
- 5:28get south step? What do you want a guy to do? Come right
- 5:30down here fast, think it till everybody just got out of a click.
- 5:33That's what the loss says you have to do. Why didn't you do it?
- 5:36Oh? It's busy? Where do you live? Eight ninety third hook
- 5:40streak any weapons? No? Well, What about the knife? What knight
- 5:46the want in the property room? Oh that they use it from my fingernails?
- 5:50A knife with an eight inch spring blade. Oh yeah, I got
- 5:54a long fingernails that nice, just about three inches too long to be legal.
- 6:00I suppose my finger there too long too. We'll look into it.
- 6:04Number three, Gilbert Farrell fifth where Gilbert forty five fifty session. I have
- 6:12a frontless street. I watch that. I'll tell a poper house room.
- 6:16What sort of a bit motel and cord? How I'm the six months maybe
- 6:23seven? What do you do for a living? I'm looking for a job.
- 6:27What kind of a job. Well, yeah, there's something in our
- 6:29gym or maybe trying boxes or something. Is that your profession? Yeah,
- 6:33I know I know something about it. That's why you hang around the twelfth
- 6:36Street gym. Yeah. Yeah, that's why any harmon hair there is if
- 6:41you happen to walk off with four sets of boxing gloves. Oh, I
- 6:43a doid thing like I don't have to doi. Oh you have a sauce.
- 6:48It didn't come even though you aren't waging? Was sure I get calm
- 6:53compensession? You mean unemployment compensation? Yeah, you're the greatest thing. I
- 6:57ever dinast cut rigg. It's amount of time to run act take a bowl
- 7:00looking into job, all right, slide down the end of the money number
- 7:04four. Man, Oh how about Benny? You know Barbara Patton? Man?
- 7:26Oh sure, hello, Susan. Well, I'm sorry you couldn't identify
- 7:30one of those men. I might take Barbara down and show the mug file.
- 7:33Maybe she can spot him there. Okay, I shouldn't quine out the
- 7:36other girls there too. You still feel all right, Barbara? And not
- 7:41time? Oh fine, Lieutenant honesty. Okay, man, I'll be with
- 7:44Captain Marlow. You want me right, let's go, Barbo hope, I'll
- 7:47see you later, Lieutenant you will nine? Oh? Man? All right?
- 7:58Bill ran through sixty five to night. Nothing really experience. Yeah.
- 8:05I think any of these four girls would recognize him if they did see him.
- 8:09It's hard to say. He's quickness, always late at night. None
- 8:13of them saw his face, just as back and only for a second descriptions,
- 8:18don't jim. He was tall, he was meeting, he was heavy,
- 8:20he was slender. Well, I'll have the boys keep holling them,
- 8:22and we can't pass up any possibility. Majestic kid, the manager called me
- 8:26again a little while ago, and I've still got three men in and around
- 8:30the theater every ninth his help looks okay. None of them get off before
- 8:35twelve thirty. And these jobs have all happened between ten thirty and twelve.
- 8:37Each of these girls went to a late movie at the Majestic Theater or all.
- 8:43After the show, they came out, waited for a bus or street
- 8:46car, and someone passed them on the street and jabbed them with an ice
- 8:48pick. Well, lucky, none of them have been seriously injured. You
- 8:52know, Luck can't hold out. He's gonna hurt someone bad. One of
- 8:54these bands. We've got to get him being complaints are poling up by the
- 8:58hour. I want you to drop everything else. You're a work now.
- 9:01Same goes from Matt Asher and Quinet Murphy. Anybody else should be okay.
- 9:05I want plainclothesman covering that entire area. And there's many auxiliary cards as we
- 9:09can spare. Maybe if we put the heat on, he'll hang up his
- 9:13ice pick for the season. You know, Bill, I don't think this
- 9:16bird cares one way or another what we do. Yeah, I'm afraid you're
- 9:20right, all right, Ben, would you Matt come on in. I
- 9:43think you both met doctor Rock one time or another. Doctor Sudden Graham,
- 9:46Can I see you again? Doctor same mayor sugeant, Sergeant quin Oh,
- 9:50I remember you on that book salesman thing. Sergeant. That's right, Captain
- 9:54Waldo can't get down for this, So grab some chairs, boys, make
- 9:56yourselves comfortable. Well, we've picked up over three hundred suspects in these ice
- 10:05picks stabbings, no identifications. We haven't had any luck in the mug files
- 10:11much more. I don't think we're gonna have anyone. So doctor Rock's here
- 10:15to give us some of his ideas. I hope I can do you some
- 10:18good, Lieutenant, Okay, sure, go ahead. Two questions here,
- 10:22gentlemen. What kind of man would have cost a young girl on a crowded
- 10:26street jabber with an ice pick, then flee and the other why would he
- 10:31do it? Well, we know it isn't for money. The girls haven't
- 10:35been robbed, and they aren't attack cases. No, no, And there's
- 10:39only one other conclusion about him. He's pathological and overt sattists. I've gone
- 10:46over the complaint reports, and I've interviewed all the girls. Well, these
- 10:48kids have been mighty lucky. None of them have been struck in a vital
- 10:52place, the fleshy part of the arm or leg a thigh in one case.
- 10:56The Catholic legtims have been at the same age between nineteen and twenty three.
- 11:01If you think this has a bearing on it, no, yes,
- 11:03yes, very much so. I doubt if he'd attack an older woman.
- 11:09There are indications that he might select his victims beforehand in some manner or another,
- 11:13and actually talk with him and know something about them, you mean,
- 11:16long enough so they'd appeal to him in this way. Well, that's about
- 11:20it. Another point, he always operates under the cover of darkness on a
- 11:24crowded street. Lieutenant Guthrie has suggested we look for a man who's working hours
- 11:28fit into the schedule. I agree with him. Maybe he works someplace where
- 11:33he meets his girls. Well, it couldn't be in their neighborhoods. They
- 11:35live in different parts of the city, so it must be where he works
- 11:39or hangs out. Who could be Now, I have here some other points
- 11:46that you can think over. I believe your suspect will be agile, possibly
- 11:50indicating he's young. He may be a frustrated artist or sculptor, or a
- 11:54medical student. His taste will probably be esthetic. He'll be the first to
- 12:00tell you he doesn't belong where he is, that he's meant for something much
- 12:03better. Any questions, But do you think he'd admit these things doctor,
- 12:07if we get him, Well, that depends entirely on his particular personality makeup.
- 12:11He might. On the other hand, he might claim an hysterical fugue
- 12:16and remember nothing about his actions at the time of commission. Any more questions.
- 12:22Okay, doctor, that's about it. Well, when you get him,
- 12:26we've got a place all reserved for him at the County Hospital eighty seven
- 12:45a four fifteen at nine to nine eighty nine of five eighteen at the corner
- 12:50Madison and coldback and has some sign only get the smoke to come out and
- 12:58rings at two eleven and an all night mark at fourteenth Sheridan Molly still with
- 13:05a cold five said one there now half the night last night couldn't breathe.
- 13:11I think I'm coming down to it's always away the two eleven eight. I
- 13:15was gonna ask for work about pridan life, its sounds, smelling, carve,
- 13:18its thirty f everything else is by eight five Franks probably right, dark
- 13:24blue or black late model Chepherds. Take it around here. Three E five
- 13:28Francs Park looks pretty in the daytime. There's a guy a lot of running
- 13:31space at night. Occupants unknown. All units, Area AH ad W sixteenth
- 13:41and Curtis Ambulance is on the well. That's one street of Yeah, that's
- 13:45area ahe ad W sixteenth Curtis. Let them ahead, Yeah, by the
- 13:50bus stop. Asher's on. Yeah, Hello, got another one. His
- 14:01name is Virginia Blanket. You call in the whole area's coming, all right,
- 14:05let's take a look. All right, call on all your people.
- 14:11I wasn't doing any we know, we know it's gonna be all right.
- 14:16Why would he do that to me? Any of you people would see anything?
- 14:24Because it hurt pretty bad. Virginia, I'm not so bad. I
- 14:28mean I didn't even know what happened for a minute or two, and then
- 14:31I heard that. Did you see him? Did you get a good look
- 14:35at him? I didn't see anybody? Why did he do what? You?
- 14:43Alright, doc man, let's have a look. What's the matter is
- 14:52that? I still please? And hear me? Then what are you going
- 14:58to do? We don't anything serious to hip too? Yeah? Oh,
- 15:03No, wasn't it so bad? Wasn't no? Alright, where are you
- 15:09taking me? What about my mother? Are you gonna tell my mother?
- 15:16I wasn't supposed to go to the shouldn d No, No, it'll be
- 15:18all right, little ladies. All right, we'll take care of you and
- 15:22keep that in down. Or when can we come and talk to a time?
- 15:28Maybe tomorrow afternoon the next day, that's the sist. Yeah, she's
- 15:33the first one who's holding up. Oh great, a touch to a spinal
- 15:37cord bend this kid man never walk again. Got any plans this Saturday night,

- 16:22same CBS radio stations. What gersons say that still in surgery? A matter
- 16:47came over told us Virginia want to Charleston contest last Yeah, do they have
- 16:53any money? Just what Virginia makes working in the dime store. There's an
- 16:59army doctor work with Gerson. Maybe the two of them can straight and uh
- 17:03pick up anybody? Hi, witness sodloney. You two want to get some
- 17:07coffee before you meet him? How about you? Man? No? No,
- 17:11now he's in your office. Ben the Crockett swim him the names Edmund
- 17:15Patrick sells papers at sixteenth from California, Hims Patcheck. My name is Guthrie.
- 17:22This is Sergeant Graham. Glad to know you. Mister Patcheck. Would
- 17:26you mind telling Lieutenant Guthrie and Sergeant Grab what you told me? Sure?
- 17:29Why? I understand you saw the whole thing pays what this man's been going
- 17:33around doing against the will of God. Sudden he is against the law.
- 17:37What did you see, mister Patcheck? I was selling my papers and praying
- 17:41tonight when it happened. Girl was very pretty. When I saw her come
- 17:47over towards you, I stop. I prayed for that girl's body in first
- 17:51hole, and I prayed now that mister Patrick. Could you tell us exactly
- 17:56what you saw? Did he crossed from in back of me? If a
- 17:59girl came towards me. He went toward her, tall, big husky fellow
- 18:02was the image of a god with the devil all around him. He passed
- 18:07her quickie works close. He passed through, and there's always hand go out
- 18:11and there was a pick in it. It come down quick, oh quickie.
- 18:15Worse. The girl I was praying for kept walking for made me another
- 18:18ten feet. Then she screamed and fell, and I prayed for her.
- 18:22I prayed for her. Can you describe the man's face, mister Patcheck?
- 18:26I saw it. He didn't run away when it happened, He turned away
- 18:29to hurt of all? When there's always face? What kind of a face
- 18:33is it? Dark light? A stash flap podgivil's face? You mean he
- 18:38walks steers with you? Do any better, quay? After you came around
- 18:44about then this man, well, at least he's sure. He saw that's
- 18:48something seriously and keeping I prayed for him. He's face fine, he wanted,
- 18:56yes, where is it, mister Patcheck? Him across from the theater
- 19:00in a white jacket, white white, the color of evil? Why where
- 19:06I go from a soup? A bus boy in a white jacket? Which
- 19:10one? Yeah, gaylords cafeteria be closed? This time of night. Huh,
- 19:15Any new fellows got a smoke for me? I'm Jim Gaylard looking for
- 19:37me. Yes, I'm Lieutenant Guthrie. This Sergeant Graham. How do you
- 19:41do? And we can talk better than my office to tennant? Okay,
- 19:44a Matt better stay down here, keep an eye on patching right this way,
- 19:48Lieutenant. When you call me this morning, I could hardly believe it,
- 19:52Lieutenant. We aren't certain of anything yet, mister Gaylord, but as
- 19:56the best lady we've had so far in these cases, I'll stay terribles.
- 20:00What kind of a man would do it? Kind of a mint? And
- 20:03let's assume he's a pretty sick man, mister game On, and his actions
- 20:07are prompted by stimulus that you and I have never known. Hard to look
- 20:11at it that way, but you're a police officer. I suppose you'll have
- 20:15to I suppose I have to help have to go. Thanks. I have
- 20:19all the information you asked, all right here here we are all and all.
- 20:26We have thirty bus boys, some work full time and some only four
- 20:30hour ships. Could you break that down? Well, we open at six
- 20:33in the morning, crew of twelve come on at that time and they all
- 20:37stay until three in the afternoon here alright, the next crew comes on at
- 20:41eleven and they go off too. How many on that shirt? Twelve?
- 20:45That means doing the heavy lunch? Are we have twenty four men on the
- 20:48floor clearing up? And when does the next shift come on? Four o'clock?
- 20:52Six men working from pot to ten. That's when we close. Our
- 20:56evening business is small. People prefer the cocktail lounge. Can I see that?
- 21:00Liszt to play? Of course? Do you know any of these men,
- 21:03mister Galen? I know who they are and I recognize their faces.
- 21:07Well, do you know anything about them? I can't cop to their lieutenant,
- 21:11I really don't. Some of our kids in school, some of them
- 21:14hold other part time jobs A buss boys a bus boy around here, and
- 21:17we have a pretty fast turnover. Will anyone quit in the last week or
- 21:21two? No, I haven't lost the boy for two months now, keeping
- 21:22my fingers crossed. Well, if you don't mind, I'd like to have
- 21:26these names and addresses for a couple of hours. You can keep it attendant.
- 21:29I have to thanks anything else I can do not right now? Thanks
- 21:33her? Well, maybe there is Our witness is sitting downstairs having a bowl
- 21:37of soup right now. He'll probably be here most of the day. He
- 21:41may try to eat everything inside. I've noticed that old man before. I'm
- 21:47glad to see him getting a good week for a chase. Well, give
- 21:49me the building. I'll pick up the tab Lieutenant. I'm as anxious for
- 21:52you to get your man as anybody. Okay, my men will be in
- 21:56the waiting room, downstairs and at all doors. You run across anything you
- 22:00think might help. I'd appreciate it. If you go directly to Van I
- 22:03will, of course. I'd have a daughter myself, just nineteen, and
- 22:07I've read about that book child Less Night, terrible thing about it, something
- 22:11like that happened to Mary Jane. I I don't know what i'd do now,
- 22:15and you have a pretty good good idea. How bad we want to
- 22:18get this man? Or one thing more? Do you use ice picks here
- 22:22all the time for chipping ice? Or where do you keep them? Mister
- 22:26Gaylor? Why every boss boy carries his own man? Hi the second ship?
- 22:52Come on here? Yeah, pant checks are not doing so well.
- 22:56Nothing of it. Nothing. All those lists you got from Gaylor, no
- 23:00records on any of them. I should talk to all the girls again.
- 23:03They all had something to eat here before they went to the movie. That
- 23:06helps. I was beginning to worry about PATCHA. You think maybe he told
- 23:11us a story to get something to eat or a warm place to pray.
- 23:15What about bringing the girls down here to look things over? No, that's
- 23:17wait, none of them really so much about his back. Pat check saw
- 23:23his face and no, he's still on a bet spen. Hi, Hi,
- 23:27man, let me a relief. Oh, I'm glad. How do
- 23:32people stand it in a cafeteria for eight hours every day to be the novis
- 23:37someone? Let's get out of here, Ben, you find a quiet place
- 23:40and have some lunch. Okay, hey, wait a minute, I checked
- 23:42spot of somebody. What. Oh, no, sure he has hooking him.
- 23:48He's standing up. I've been watching him for three hours, Ben,
- 23:51he does that every time they put something new on the menu. You're sure,
- 24:12mister Gaylor, And I'm positive this is the last crew and every one
- 24:17of them's here today. Man, they're all out on the floor bed.
- 24:19What do you think. Well, he's had time to look at all of
- 24:22them. I've been hoping that he was wrong about it. Being one of
- 24:26my employees. He's always stuck me as a very confused old man. Hi
- 24:30man, Hi, anything from downtown roundns and some of the men working in
- 24:34a shift. Ryan's from McAlister, Oklahoma. Then here a couple of months
- 24:38told his landlady plans on going to university next semester. Medical school, didn't
- 24:42say. Steele's twenty four, married, a couple of kids. Lives in
- 24:47Arvada as a filling station job. When he isn't here, he's trying to
- 24:49buy a house, serving nothing, lives in the boarding house, works with
- 24:53whites. Charger's over to the gym talking to people, you know what about
- 24:57the others, And I'm ready for a phone call. Okay, look,
- 25:02tell him to keep on that anatomy angle. I think it's the best,
- 25:04right, come on, man, anything more, Lieutenant, No, we'll
- 25:07call you if anything comes up, mister game on, all right? If
- 25:10you have my number? Hi Yah? Who care? Mayn't we sit down?
- 25:18No? Well it's three thirty, mister Patcheck. You've been here all
- 25:27day along. True, I got to get to my praperson. My frain
- 25:30to way behind with all this commotion to date, and we're all way behind,
- 25:37mister Patcheck. Yeah, we didn't ask you to come here just to
- 25:38way. Wait a minute, Hi, I remember why I'm here. Well,
- 25:42mister Patcheck, you've seen all of the men who work here, Yes,
- 25:47strong men, most of them some week and doomed. You look them
- 25:52over carefully. We've been hoping you'd recognize one of them. You'll remember what
- 25:59you told us last night about the man you know in the white jacket.
- 26:03Well, mister Patcheck, I'll pray for him. Well, have you seen
- 26:07the man we're looking for today? It must have if he worked here.
- 26:12You don't remember him? Now? Is that him? It's a hard thing
- 26:18you ask of me. You find one fish and all these fishes, Are
- 26:22you sure that's him? Would you know the things I know? The face?
- 26:26Lieutenant? Well, ever since the face appeared, I've been wondering how
- 26:30to say this thing to you, Lieutenant go three. You mean, the
- 26:33man's here now in this place? What will happen to him? Will he
- 26:38be punished? You'll be examined. I can't say what will happen after that?
- 26:42Tell us who he is, mister Patcheck? Should I? You told
- 26:45us yourself he's acted against God's will and the law of nature. I think
- 26:49you shouldn't. Should I? If you believe what you say about the violation
- 26:55of these laws, mister patcheck one man on the balcony, that's just appreciate.
- 27:03I saw with the pointed steel which one is he by the water glasses?
- 27:07That's Ryan Ray. Ryan worked here a couple of months. I did
- 27:11right, I did right. I didn't kill myself doing this. That should
- 27:17come through. Yeah, take care of him. A man's up there.
- 27:22There's something witness. Yeah, Ryan, Huh, I'd like to talk to
- 27:30your son. Huh. What about we're police officers. Police officers. Yeah,
- 27:37you have a coat. I want you to come downtown with us.
- 27:40Well, why should I haven't done anything. You've been identified as the man
- 27:45who's been using an ice pick on several women in town. Oh I read
- 27:49about that. Well, why why would I do a thing like that?
- 27:53Don't you know? No, No, I don't. I don't know.
- 27:57Well, we're talking over downtown. Wait a minit. I don't have to
- 28:03go down. Give me the pick, Gray, don't come near me,
- 28:08Ben sure. A revolver is a much better weapon than a nice pick.
- 28:14Ray, I'll use it if I have to. Right here, Well,
- 28:23it is a better weapon the right wrist. Okay, come on, don't
- 28:33you have to have some proof to take me into custody. We just said
- 28:37we had a witness one of those girls saw my face. No, just
- 28:41someone who prays for you. The lineup or before you passed the innocent,

- 30:27on his round table holds Court Dan coverly speaking and remember you enjoy Grand Central
- 30:47Station every Saturday in the daytime hours on the CBS Radio network. Welcome Back
- 31:48definitely a very chilling episode. The scene with the girl who had been stamped
- 31:57was very dramatic and I thought, very powerfully done. All right, well,
- 32:04I we turned to some listener comments and feedback and we had a question
- 32:10over on Facebook and was regarding Ed Begley. Thelma says, I noticed that
- 32:17in the show the line of one of the people in the show is Ed
- 32:21Begley is his son Ed Begley Junior. The actor in indeed his son is
- 32:29Ed Begley Junior. Ed Begley Senior was probably the role of most associated with
- 32:36was the role of the bigoted juror number ten in Twelve Angry Men. But
- 32:42he had a very rich career as a longtime character actor. And then we
- 32:47have a review from the iTunes store Ashton MC eight eight riots regarding the app.
- 32:53I love the app. I wish it had a little better variety in
- 32:58shows. Some of my favorites aret on here. Richard Diamonds, Sam Spade,
- 33:00Philip Marlow, but overall a great app. I use it on my
- 33:05iPhone and iPad. Well, uh, Philip Marlow is coming in forty six
- 33:12weeks, maybe a little bit of a forty four but uh yeah, yes,
- 33:22I do think some folks have I guess, in the words of Jimmy
- 33:30Duranty, gotten under a misapprehension, the not knowing that you know, this
- 33:38is a podcast that goes through the app and so you know, we can
- 33:45only go so many shows at a time, and the longer shows like the
- 33:50ones he listed definitely present a challenge. But we've all got them on our
- 33:55big last of Great of detective shows up big last on Great to Tell Actors
- 34:00dot net. So Lord William and the Quick don't rise. We'll get to
- 34:05him in due time. All right, Well, that will actually do it
- 34:08for this week. We will be back on Monday with yours truly, Johnny
