- 0:22SPEAKER_00: One of the best and worst things ever invented was the smartphone.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: It can be the worst thing because of all the distractions lurking on your phone.
- 0:30SPEAKER_00: The notifications, games, email, and social media beckon you every second.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: If smartphones were designed to be addictive, they're doing a pretty good job.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: Yet smartphones are also, in some ways, the best thing because of the convenience.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: This is especially true when it comes to options for getting your writing done faster.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: If you've never tried dictating your content on your smartphone, I think you're really missing out on a fun and easy way to be a lot more productive.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: I often dictate material for this podcast as well as my books and my blog.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: So it kind of works like this.
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: I have a rough outline of what I want to say, and then I go for a walk and I just dictate.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: And whenever you use the speech to text button on your phone, it magically creates text out of what you're speaking.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: And if you take a little bit more time to learn commands like new line or new paragraph, it's even more effective.
- 1:23SPEAKER_00: Now I think that the app that you use for dictation doesn't actually matter that much.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: I usually use the Scrivener app on my phone because it syncs perfectly with the desktop version of the app on my Mac, but you can use the Notes app on your phone, an email app, Evernote, or really any other kind of app where you can input text.
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Now remember this though, dictation usually requires you to clean it up later.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: So the editing on the back end of dictation can take a little bit longer, but I consider the editing to be a second pass on the material, which of course improves it.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: Now, another added benefit is that if you dictate while you're walking, your brain is more energetic because you're moving while you're thinking and talking.
- 2:02SPEAKER_00: So you kind of get a lot of really cool benefits if you dictate your content instead of just sitting down to write it.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: So if you've never tried dictating content for your book or for your blog, I would encourage you to give it a shot.
- 2:16SPEAKER_00: I think you'll enjoy a different way to create material and can also save you a lot of time and produce a better second draft.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Here's today's challenge.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: How could dictation help you save time and improve your writing?
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: Maybe even give it a shot today.
