- 0:05SPEAKER_00: What's up everybody?
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Welcome to another episode of the bottom line on sports.
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: He's Jeremy Pink.
- 0:12SPEAKER_00: I'm Jean-Jacques Taylor, and this is our show about the intersection between sports and money.
- 0:18SPEAKER_00: You know how we get down.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: First, we ask you to subscribe, rate, and review.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: Five stars only.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: And then we start with a number.
- 0:27SPEAKER_03: This week, the number, my friend, is the number this week is$120 million.
- 0:33SPEAKER_03: And that is that is the essentially it's a reserve fund that the New York Yankees have put in place just in case there's a work stoppage next year in Major League Baseball.
- 0:47SPEAKER_03: And the collective bargaining agreement expires on December 1st of this year.
- 0:52SPEAKER_00: And see, this is why you know the the betting odds always lean toward management when it comes to a strike.
- 1:04SPEAKER_03: Who's gonna be able to stick it out longer?
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: The strike is all about ain't nobody getting paid.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:09SPEAKER_00: So who's got the bigger war chest?
- 1:11SPEAKER_00: Who can survive one month, two months, three months, and not getting checks?
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: Uh, whose wives and girlfriends and side chicks can they withstand the pressure that comes from I haven't had a new Birkin bag this month.
- 1:26SPEAKER_00: Who's making my house payment?
- 1:28SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: I want to go on a trip.
- 1:29SPEAKER_00: Well, who can survive that?
- 1:31SPEAKER_00: The players or the owners?
- 1:32SPEAKER_03: Well, especially but a football, especially football where you get game checks and football, they have no chance.
- 1:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they have no chance, right?
- 1:39SPEAKER_03: Base baseball, maybe.
- 1:42SPEAKER_03: But I mean, the sticking point in the collective bargain agreement is gonna be a salary cap.
- 1:46SPEAKER_03: And I don't think the players are gonna let that happen.
- 1:47SPEAKER_03: I think there's uh this would be very typical of Major League Baseball, just as it's starting to gain more popularity, do better in TV, get more collect, you know, get more interest among the younger fan.
- 2:01SPEAKER_03: Bam, it's gonna go is there's gonna be a work stoppage or there's gonna be a problem.
- 2:04SPEAKER_03: And uh so we'll see.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: We'll see.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: Now, the collective bargain agreement expires on December 1st.
- 2:10SPEAKER_03: So, really, they have until probably about March 1st, March 15th, maybe to get something done.
- 2:18SPEAKER_03: But still they're pushing it.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: I think there's gonna be a work stoppage.
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: I don't think there's any doubt about it.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: Um, and it's all gonna come down to a salary cap.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: They can negotiate everything else, is is somewhat negotiable.
- 2:33SPEAKER_00: Um, but in the end, the owners want a cap to save themselves from themselves and to create that as always, and to create that kind of fixed spend expenditures.
- 2:45SPEAKER_00: And the players are like, nah, bruh, we're good.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: We don't need to have a salary cap.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: And the players are gonna point to a team like the Cleveland Guardians, who are like 28th in payroll, but have been to the playoffs four or five years in a row, right?
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: They're gonna point to Tampa Bay, which is always near the bottom of the play of the payroll, and like, look at them, they won the East, they beat the Yankees, right?
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: Uh, they're gonna point, they're even gonna point to the Dodgers and say, Hey, the Dodgers got all this money, but they haven't won every World Series.
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: I think there's been you know seven or eight different champions in the last 10 years.
- 3:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: And once the Dodgers uh acquired uh what's his name?
- 3:27SPEAKER_00: Scoobyl, Scrubble from Detroit.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: They weren't even that good the last uh eight weeks or the last two weeks.
- 3:34SPEAKER_03: I mean, I mean the team that looks like the the team that looks like they can beat the Dodgers this year is the team who's been the best in the second half of the season, which are which are the Padres.
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: And the Padres also are one, maybe the only team in in baseball that does it that isn't scared of the Dodgers either.
- 3:53SPEAKER_03: Um but they also have a huge but they have a huge payroll too.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Now they got a huge payroll.
- 3:58SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, Milwaukee, I don't think, has a huge payroll.
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: And uh they were uh one of the best teams in the uh they have the best record.
- 4:06SPEAKER_00: So when you put all that together, when we're negotiating, you just have to explain to me like, what are you talking about?
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: It's not my fault that the athletics and the royals are a couple of raggedy run franchises and they don't want to spend no money.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: That ain't my problem, right?
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: As a player and as a union, all right.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: There's always gonna be some companies that don't want to do right um and don't want to spend money because they're they're too worried about giving it to the grandkids, so that's not my problem.
- 4:35SPEAKER_00: And so I I don't know how you can sell it to the union or to the players when there's several franchises who are toward the bottom of the payroll who are competing just as well against franchises at the top.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: That's right.
- 4:49SPEAKER_03: And you also look at, you know, I always look at the English Premier League too.
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: It's always or the NBA, there's always usually maybe six or eight teams max that are gonna compete for whatever the championship or the World Series or whatever it is, anyway.
- 5:05SPEAKER_03: And all these leagues are thriving anyway.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: And every once in a while you have a team that kind of breaks through that's Texas Rangers, Texas Rangers, that's unusual.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Um right, but you have a team that cheats like Houston, and they may win a year every now and then.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: And then they may win, they may win a year fairly.
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: So yeah, yeah.
- 5:25SPEAKER_03: Uh and you know, it's is so, but but I do think, do you think you're gonna end up with a you don't think the season will start on time?
- 5:34SPEAKER_03: Do you think it'll be a shortened season?
- 5:36SPEAKER_03: Do you think it will be a shortened spring training?
- 5:38SPEAKER_03: Do you think the whole season will be gone next year?
- 5:40SPEAKER_00: That's a great point.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Um I'm gonna say right now, I think there'll be a shortened season.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Because at the end of the day, you know, somebody it's a game of chicken.
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: At some point, somebody goes, Okay, we don't really want to blow the whole thing.
- 6:00SPEAKER_00: And again, the longer it goes, to me, the less sentiment you get from the public because it becomes do you think people in what is a hurting economy for your regular everyday people, do you really think that they care about billionaires fighting over billions?
- 6:20SPEAKER_03: No.
- 6:21SPEAKER_03: I think if you have a compelling NBA playoff, and uh to a lesser extent, a compelling NHL playoff in April and May, I don't think it's gonna matter.
- 6:32SPEAKER_03: Uh well really don't.
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: No, here's the other thing, bro.
- 6:37SPEAKER_00: We found this out during COVID.
- 6:39SPEAKER_00: People will find things to do, man.
- 6:42SPEAKER_03: Watch it, you watch a Jordan documentary, you know.
- 6:45SPEAKER_03: That's what you do.
- 6:45SPEAKER_00: They will find things to do with their time.
- 6:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: And here's the thing to me: more than ever, people are people are conditioned not to miss you.
- 6:55SPEAKER_00: Like, there was a time where, oh my god, what are we gonna do?
- 6:57SPEAKER_00: There's no baseball.
- 6:58SPEAKER_00: Oh, what how do we spend the summer months?
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: What do we do?
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: Now it's like, hey man, I'm gonna rewatch the wire again.
- 7:05SPEAKER_00: There's a lot of stuff I missed the first time.
- 7:07SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna go watch Breaking Bad.
- 7:09SPEAKER_03: But but all of this.
- 7:11SPEAKER_03: By the way, the wire was only watchable for maybe the first two seasons.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: After that, it was I'm not gonna have this conversation.
- 7:17SPEAKER_03: It was it was it was unwatchable after that, but that's a different story.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: You know, so I think baseball has to be very careful.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: It took a long time to recover from '98.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, from after from the last strike, it took them a long time to recover.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: It did.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: People, it's not even, you know, where is baseball rank now?
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: It's behind this, it's behind football.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: I think it's behind college football, it's behind the NBA.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: It's probably ahead of hockey.
- 7:41SPEAKER_03: I I think in that it's it's probably it's I think it probably goes NFL.
- 7:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you're probably right.
- 7:49SPEAKER_03: Probably college football second, and then uh NBA MLB is it it depends, you know.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: Um, but but NBA is probably ahead of it.
- 7:58SPEAKER_03: I think you're probably right.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and so I think they have to be very careful.
- 8:03SPEAKER_00: You know, plus baseball is at a time where I think it's uh, you know, you've got that three outcome thing, people don't want it's you know, they changed the rules to draw some of the audience back because they were losing so many fans, and I think they figured out a way to make it a little bit interesting.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: Although I gotta tell you, man, to be honest with you, part of it is because the Texas Rangers, they're 500 teams, so it's not like they stomped this year, but they were incredibly boring.
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: Well, the whole American League was just brutal this year.
- 8:34SPEAKER_00: Okay, see, that raises up a point.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: Yeah, like let me see.
- 8:38SPEAKER_00: The Rangers have been bad many, many times over the course of my time in Dallas.
- 8:43SPEAKER_05: Uh-huh.
- 8:44SPEAKER_00: But the Rangers have always had three or four stars.
- 8:48SPEAKER_00: Like, you know, they used to be the traditional Beer League softball team.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: They might win 75 games.
- 8:54SPEAKER_00: What is that, 75 and 87 or whatever?
- 8:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, whatever.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: But they were they were fun.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: They're gonna score a bunch of runs and be exciting, and they're gonna have three or four guys.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: You go, like, hey, I'm not leaving until Palmero's at bat.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: And you never and you never you never knew what Ron Washington was gonna do was great.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: See all that.
- 9:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Well, this year's Ranger team had none of that.
- 9:14SPEAKER_00: They were probably a better team overall, but they didn't have anybody that was appointment watching.
- 9:20SPEAKER_00: So they were boring.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: And to me, that's what baseball is in general.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: They don't have enough stars and enough thing to keep people, so they you can't leave people when you don't have when you're not sure they're coming back.
- 9:32SPEAKER_03: Well, well, what's it what's what I thought was pretty interesting is we're taping this on Wednesday night.
- 9:38SPEAKER_03: And so we're taping this in the middle of the second game of the Yankees Red Sox uh uh wildcard series.
- 9:45SPEAKER_03: But the Astros lost to the White Sox two games to none.
- 9:49SPEAKER_03: They lost the you know, they lost the series already.
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: The first game, which you know, and the games were in Houston.
- 9:54SPEAKER_03: The first game in Houston didn't didn't draw a full stadium, you know?
- 9:59SPEAKER_03: No.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: And okay, it's the playoffs, it's the Astros.
- 10:03SPEAKER_03: The Astros have a you know pretty big following, but the Astros were just like the Rangers this year.
- 10:09SPEAKER_03: They were kind of uneven, a little over 500, and just not they weren't any good.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: They finished not watchable, you know, just not watchable.
- 10:18SPEAKER_03: And and you really had, you know, and then not just because I'm a Yankees, you know, uh in the Yankees market, but you really had like the Red Sox were kind of an interesting story in the American League.
- 10:30SPEAKER_03: The Yankees were just still the Yankees, but um, you know, nobody cares about Tampa Bay.
- 10:36SPEAKER_03: Tampa Bay was the best team.
- 10:37SPEAKER_03: Uh Tampa Tampa Bay's best team.
- 10:39SPEAKER_03: Nobody, nobody cares about them, and they don't hit home runs.
- 10:41SPEAKER_03: And nobody can they're not interesting, yeah.
- 10:43SPEAKER_00: They're not interesting.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: What is what is Tampa's claim to fame right now?
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: They hit a lot of stuff.
- 10:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, right, right.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: I mean, really, that's what they're known for.
- 10:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: And and so so so I think baseball's got to be extremely careful because this may be to your point that you made earlier.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: There could be a work stoppage that uh next year, and outside of a couple of pockets and cities in this country, yeah, nobody might know.
- 11:15SPEAKER_03: And that's the danger that baseball faces right now.
- 11:18SPEAKER_00: Right, that's what they got to be careful of.
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: Uh, you know, outside of St.
- 11:21SPEAKER_00: Louis and New York and uh Chicago south side of Chicago.
- 11:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but even St.
- 11:25SPEAKER_03: Louis didn't draw this year, you know.
- 11:28SPEAKER_00: So they damn sure ain't gonna carry in Texas.
- 11:30SPEAKER_00: Um, they'll find enough things to do that if the uh the Rangers and National aren't here, you know.
- 11:37SPEAKER_03: When does when does high school football season start in uh Texas?
- 11:40SPEAKER_03: Starts at the end of August, right?
- 11:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah, but don't forget we got spring football here.
- 11:44SPEAKER_03: So oh that's right.
- 11:46SPEAKER_03: So you got so you've got so what you've got, you got the NBA playoffs, yeah, you got July, then you got high school football in Texas.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: What you know this that's what I'm saying, man.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: My whole point is baseball has to be very cognizant of where they are.
- 12:00SPEAKER_00: For sure.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: And you want to get a deal done.
- 12:04SPEAKER_00: Uh I don't think they're getting a salary cap.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: I'd be shocked if they get one.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: I can't see, I can't see why the players would ever give them that.
- 12:13SPEAKER_03: They're they're gonna get a a a schino, which is gonna be salary cap and name only.
- 12:19SPEAKER_03: There will be some face-saving thing that the they'll figure out some sort of deal.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: Um, but it won't, it'll be like the opposite of what happened in the NBA.
- 12:30SPEAKER_03: The NBA said it wasn't a salary cap and it was.
- 12:33SPEAKER_03: Here they'll say it is a salary cap, and there'll be enough loopholes or enough you know, conditions or exceptions that it won't be.
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: It won't.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: So what you're saying, and I I could probably get down with that, is at the end of the day, there'll be some kind of soft cap so that if you want to, if you want to find ways, there'll be various ways to circumvent it.
- 12:56SPEAKER_00: You know, like in the NFL, you circumvent it by paying big bonuses, yeah, prorating it, da-da-da-da-da.
- 13:02SPEAKER_03: Th there'll be right, there'll there'll be enough exceptions that the players will agree to it.
- 13:08SPEAKER_03: And it'll be it'll be done in some sort of name only.
- 13:10SPEAKER_03: Now, the danger of that is that you then have what's what will be salary cap creep, and then the next collective bargain agreement.
- 13:17SPEAKER_00: They'll tighten it things.
- 13:18SPEAKER_03: Exactly right.
- 13:19SPEAKER_03: So that that's but that's what I think is gonna happen.
- 13:21SPEAKER_03: There's gonna be some sort of face saving, it won't be called a salary cap.
- 13:26SPEAKER_03: The owners will say it's equivalent to a salary cap, the players will say it's not a salary cap, and there's enough exceptions, and we're still gonna get paid, and they'll figure out some sort of middle ground.
- 13:35SPEAKER_03: The danger, as I as I just said, is that that starts to set this that starts to set the stage for uh tightening of a salary cap down the road.
- 13:45SPEAKER_00: And uh that's why I said I don't think that's why I've just changed my mind already again.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: I don't think they're getting one because once you open up that door, yeah, it may be, you know, because here's the thing you bought the uh Chicago Cubs, you can wait it out, man.
- 14:01SPEAKER_00: Or you bought whatever, whatever team you bought, right?
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: You bought it for the long haul for for the most part.
- 14:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you know, there were there's always some owner that comes in and wants to flip it, but most of them, I want to own a baseball team.
- 14:14SPEAKER_00: So if I own it, oh what's the next collective bargain?
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: Eight years?
- 14:18SPEAKER_00: I can wait eight years to put some.
- 14:22SPEAKER_03: The other thing, too, about the the Yankees, uh the reserve fund is largely contemplated around uh the assumption that they're not going to get revenues from any uh from the stadium.
- 14:31SPEAKER_03: So they're they they've already they've already planned for that piece of to to manage that those whatever those debt and other obligations they have in anticipation of that.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: So they've already just assumed that they're not playing paying uh player salaries during that six months, so or that 12 six, 12 months, or whatever the time frame is.
- 14:51SPEAKER_00: It's gonna be interesting to for me to hear the conversations around it, but bottom line is one, the baseball season is not starting on time, and two, I don't think they're going to get a salary cap put in.
- 15:05SPEAKER_03: Uh but bottom bottom line for me, I think we'll see a shortened season, and I don't think anyone will notice, and I think there'll be some facsimile of a salary cap that won't be particularly meaningful.
- 15:21SPEAKER_00: Um, you sent me a story earlier today, and it was a little Twitter thing, I think.
- 15:27SPEAKER_00: And it shows Dan Lanning in his office talking to somebody, and above his head is a little ticker tape, like on the stock market, with uh former Oregon Ducks and the NFL contracts they had signed.
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: And I thought it was interesting because one, he had that little ticker in his office, but two, it was up to date because uh the Falcon signed some dude I'd never heard of today, so a four-year 64 million dollar deal, and it was on the ticker, uh it was up to date with the latest information, and uh all I could think of was you know what?
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: I've heard of some other teams that do it.
- 16:03SPEAKER_03: Oh, you have?
- 16:04SPEAKER_03: I hadn't seen that before.
- 16:05SPEAKER_03: I hadn't seen that before.
- 16:06SPEAKER_00: I hadn't seen that.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: Other teams do different things right because it's just another way to say, hey, this is why you should come here.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: Um, or you know, when people are in when players are in your office, are you sure you're doing everything you need, Jeremy, to get to the league?
- 16:21SPEAKER_00: Because there's a lot of money out there for you, son.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 16:24SPEAKER_00: Uh, but it starts here in Oregon, right?
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: And so uh, you know, I just find it all interesting because when I was a young reporter trying to decide where I wanted to go in sports, I remember having this conversation distinctly with myself.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: And I said to myself, Self, I really don't want to cover the NFL because NFL is all about money and contracts.
- 16:51SPEAKER_00: I think I want to cover college football.
- 16:53SPEAKER_00: That was my initial thought.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: And so I started off wanting to cover college football because it was pure.
- 16:59SPEAKER_00: You didn't have all those contracts and all the money.
- 17:02SPEAKER_00: Well, it wasn't pure, but it was and now look at college football.
- 17:07SPEAKER_00: You might as well be covering the NFL.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: You got to keep up with NIL money, everything about college football is all about money now.
- 17:13SPEAKER_03: The game is all money, it's all money, yeah.
- 17:16SPEAKER_03: Look at but look at look at Oregon this weekend, and which you know, it's not just because I happen to be at the Oregon USC game this weekend, but the Dante Moore, the Oregon starting quarterback, goes down.
- 17:29SPEAKER_03: Dylan Riola, who's the backup quarterback who was a top recruit and who played at Nebraska for the last two years, he was their backup.
- 17:37SPEAKER_03: He went there and they paid him a lot of money to be a backup.
- 17:41SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 17:42SPEAKER_03: And that's what the NFL does.
- 17:45SPEAKER_03: They'll find a good backup.
- 17:47SPEAKER_03: He went there for two reasons.
- 17:48SPEAKER_03: One, he's getting paid.
- 17:50SPEAKER_03: Two, he wants to learn from you know the Oregon system because Oregon, you know, does well in terms of producing quarterbacks.
- 17:57SPEAKER_03: Um, and three, that's like a smart financial decision for him.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I also think uh, no disrespect, but it's fully intended.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: He wanted to try to play for a championship.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 18:09SPEAKER_00: You can compete for a championship at Oregon whether you win it or not.
- 18:12SPEAKER_00: It's like going to Ohio States, like going to Alabama's, like going to LSU.
- 18:16SPEAKER_00: I mean, you will compete for a championship.
- 18:18SPEAKER_00: You're not gonna do that in Nebraska.
- 18:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 18:21SPEAKER_03: I mean, I guess I guess Oregon is a yeah, I mean, Oregon is a is a playoff team many years.
- 18:27SPEAKER_00: They're gonna get it, you're gonna be in the conversation.
- 18:29SPEAKER_03: You're gonna be in conversation.
- 18:30SPEAKER_03: You're you're not gonna be, you know, you're you're also gonna be in the conversation of why does that team get blown out every year in the playoffs?
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: You know, but that's but you're but you're in the playoffs to be blown out.
- 18:39SPEAKER_03: But you're in the playoffs and people are seeing you, yeah.
- 18:41SPEAKER_03: But I have to say, by the way, that so I watched that game in person.
- 18:46SPEAKER_03: So I saw Dante Moore, uh Jaden Maiava, and uh uh Dylan Royola play.
- 18:53SPEAKER_03: Dylan Royola's the best was the best of those three quarterbacks.
- 18:56SPEAKER_03: It wasn't even close, in my opinion.
- 18:57SPEAKER_00: He had a phenomenal game.
- 18:59SPEAKER_03: Well, he's he's just you know, you know, you've covered a lot of NFL, and you can just tell when it's it's so much different when you watch a game in person than when you watch on television.
- 19:07SPEAKER_03: Like like you'll want I I remember a million years ago watching Magic Johnson play for the first time in person.
- 19:13SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 19:14SPEAKER_03: Going, oh my God.
- 19:17SPEAKER_03: He's like he's so much better than everybody.
- 19:19SPEAKER_03: That I he did it, and certainly he was a great player, and certainly is one of the you know 10 best players of all time.
- 19:25SPEAKER_03: But he was it was like watching you know AAU basketball, and there's like one kid who you know is gonna play in the NBA, and everybody else is you know about as good as I am, you know, and uh um and you could tell.
- 19:37SPEAKER_03: Um, but Dylan Riola was just uh just a phenomenal player who was thrown into the game, calm, great arm.
- 19:47SPEAKER_03: Uh he was great.
- 19:49SPEAKER_03: He was he was much better than the other two quarterbacks that I saw.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Um, and that raises an interesting question.
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: You know, Dante Moore suffers that uh big time hit.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: You could tell immediately he's in a concussion because he's fencing, which is when you got your arm.
- 20:06SPEAKER_03: It was it was scary, it was brutal.
- 20:08SPEAKER_03: We had a line of sight and we could see the ambulance pulling into the tunnel from where we were, right?
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it was like that's how we knew it was like, oh my, and that that ambulance was there quickly.
- 20:20SPEAKER_00: Now, I think he got four and a half million dollars this year, somewhere in that ballpark.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: Um, but the season was not necessarily going well for him, he was playing all right, and so you wonder now, he went back, which is fine, but you know, college football, the these games, these the well, we often say amongst my friends, NFL is a dirty game.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: College football is a dirty game, and so if Ryel would play it as well as he played, you can see a scenario where they go, Hey Dante, just make sure we take enough time to get you get everything right.
- 20:58SPEAKER_00: And you know, it's three or four weeks, and okay, I'm I'm good to play, I'm ready to go, but yeah.
- 21:03SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, you haven't played in five weeks.
- 21:06SPEAKER_05: Right, right, right, right.
- 21:07unknown: Right.
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: Coming here, and then we got Indiana after that.
- 21:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: I mean, you can just see the you can see the potential for sure.
- 21:14SPEAKER_00: And then you go, well, heck, you could have been in the NFL with guaranteed five years, you know, 30 million.
- 21:23SPEAKER_03: So, but but here's the good news about college football.
- 21:25SPEAKER_03: If this was 10 years ago when that happened, he's getting nothing in college.
- 21:30SPEAKER_03: And unless he's unless unless he's playing for the S an SEC team.
- 21:33SPEAKER_03: He's getting nothing in college, right?
- 21:35SPEAKER_03: And um, so that's the that's the that's the good news.
- 21:39SPEAKER_03: At least he's getting paid in college now for this.
- 21:41SPEAKER_03: But I but I do think that that this injury in the if Ryola now Rayola had one good game.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: He may have he was in a really good quarterback, so yeah, he's good.
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: He's he's really good.
- 21:51SPEAKER_03: He'll he'll definitely be a pro quarterback, whether he goes in the first round or the fourth round.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 21:56SPEAKER_03: But um you know, but this'll hurt uh Dante Moore's draft stock, particularly if Oregon plays better with Royola, because Oregon was playing was not playing well.
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: And you could see them, you could see a marked difference when Rayola got in the game.
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: Now that could have been a function of the fact that everybody's rallying around their quarterback got hurt, which I'm sure I'm sure was part of it.
- 22:19SPEAKER_03: But um, but there wasn't a there wasn't sort of that, you know, that sort of collective sigh that you see on some teams like, oh my God, I gotta get Tommy DeVito in the game.
- 22:29SPEAKER_03: You know, there wasn't there wasn't anything like that, you know.
- 22:32SPEAKER_03: And it was the team was like ready to go.
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: And uh uh it's it's it's fascinating, but it does point to what you know, back to the Dan Lanning thing.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: That's why you go to Oregon is to get the money.
- 22:45SPEAKER_03: You know, it's a you know, it's one, it's one of the it's got a huge benefactor in Phil Knight.
- 22:50SPEAKER_03: It's got a you know, a program that it's got great facilities.
- 22:54SPEAKER_03: It's like one of the top, that's probably now one of the top 10 programs in the country.
- 22:57SPEAKER_03: So it's one of the programs you go to.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:00SPEAKER_00: Um, but that's uh it's it's it's just interesting how the game has really changed.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: And uh everything we talk about is uh, you know, it's it's money related, whether it's teams and conferences or the college football playoff or what kind of players you're gonna get.
- 23:18SPEAKER_00: And now the money has gone to the point where rivals, and I believe on three, are charging it's available to you.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: So your son wants to play uh college football, he's not getting a lot of offers.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: You can ask Rivals to write up a report on him.
- 23:36SPEAKER_00: I could have done that for my son, and uh it only cost$499 uh for them to do it.
- 23:43SPEAKER_00: Now I read that man, and I was like, I'm not mad at Rivals Around Three because you can ask people to pay for anything, but fans and parents are so delusional that they believe that that that that would work and that would help your kid.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 24:05SPEAKER_00: And my my initial impression is that may help one in a million kids because if you go to your son's head coach, say, coach, would you give me a real honest assessment of my kid?
- 24:21SPEAKER_00: I'm pretty sure you'll get the same exact thing, but it'd be better than you get it from a write-up from a high school reporter who's given a critique of your kid.
- 24:33SPEAKER_03: Well, and and also, is he gonna give a negative critique when they know people are paying for it?
- 24:40SPEAKER_03: And then, oh, my son did this, you should have your son do this too.
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: So you know it's um it's it's and if you go to a big time school for whatever reason, like my my kid played at one of those Texas football powers, and maybe whatever reason you didn't have access to the head coach, he's too busy.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: You think the defensive or offensive coordinator at your kid couldn't sit down and give you the same scouting report?
- 25:06SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 25:08SPEAKER_00: I want to know do I need to save money for AJ to go to college, or is he gonna be able to get a scholarship?
- 25:15SPEAKER_03: Well, and here's and here's what I'd say to everybody.
- 25:17SPEAKER_03: And I used to, as you know, my kids were playing on the play a lot of uh AAU basketball, and uh, you know, and I would I would look to see how much money some of these parents were spending on their kids, and I would kind of look over and I'd go, you know, here's what I would suggest you do.
- 25:36SPEAKER_03: You know that 500 bucks you're paying for him to do some clinic that you think is gonna do something and it's not?
- 25:43SPEAKER_03: Take that 500 bucks and put it in a 529 college savings plan, you know?
- 25:48SPEAKER_03: And I'd say the same thing for the rivals.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 25:51SPEAKER_03: There's probably a really good reason that no one's looking at your kid because they're probably not that good.
- 25:57SPEAKER_03: So take that 500.
- 25:58SPEAKER_03: If you can come up with 500 bucks, put into a college fund for him.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: And see, that's the key, man.
- 26:04SPEAKER_00: And I tell, you know, I used to have people say, Hey, could you do a story on my kid?
- 26:08SPEAKER_00: He needs the publicity, dah dah da.
- 26:10SPEAKER_00: And I just be like, Can I be honest with you?
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: If your kid can really play, they will find your kid.
- 26:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you'll know, and you'll know about them.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: I mean, they will they will they will if they can play and then you tell them how do you think they find and I'm I'm dating myself.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: How do you think they find Marcus Dupree in Philadelphia, Mississippi?
- 26:33SPEAKER_00: Oh well, of course, of course.
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: How do you think they find these kids?
- 26:36SPEAKER_03: How do you think they find Josh Allen and you know wherever but but seriously, Jacques, if you go back to you and I were the girls' high school basketball reporters for the Columbus Dispatch in about a thousand years ago, the late 80s, yeah, the late the late 80s, right?
- 26:54SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 26:55SPEAKER_03: And um, but we found all the high school great high school girls basketball players, and everybody who we wrote about and everybody who we did stories on were all state players, you know.
- 27:09SPEAKER_03: And you know how we knew?
- 27:11SPEAKER_03: Because the other coaches know you call up a coach and they'd say, How are you feeling about this game?
- 27:16SPEAKER_03: and say, Oh, I'm worried about you know, number 25.
- 27:19SPEAKER_03: You remember, yeah, you remember from Beach, I think she was from Beechcroft, Jay Jones is the name I remember.
- 27:24SPEAKER_03: You remember Jay Jones?
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: Dude.
- 27:26SPEAKER_00: Dude, see, we're gonna take a quick exit ramp.
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: Jay Jones lives in Dallas.
- 27:32SPEAKER_05: You're kidding.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: I didn't know I see Jay about two or three times a year, and she always comes over and gives me a hug, and we talk about the good old days at Beechcroft.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: Now, do you know who she was married to?
- 27:45SPEAKER_03: I have no it's so funny.
- 27:46SPEAKER_03: I haven't thought of the name Jay Jones for a thousand years, you know.
- 27:50SPEAKER_00: Jay Jones was married to Rumrol.
- 27:55SPEAKER_00: No idea.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: Alonzo Speltman.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: Oh, I didn't know that.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: Yes, for several years.
- 28:01SPEAKER_03: Did Jay Jones end up playing in college?
- 28:03SPEAKER_03: I don't remember.
- 28:04SPEAKER_03: She played in LI State.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: Oh, she did.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: I didn't know that.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: I didn't know that.
- 28:07SPEAKER_03: I don't remember.
- 28:08SPEAKER_00: That's where she met Zoe.
- 28:09SPEAKER_00: Oh, of course.
- 28:10SPEAKER_00: And then when they got married, she she was in Dallas.
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: So I bumped into her somewhere as hey.
- 28:17SPEAKER_00: So we're talking.
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: And now she she does uh she like I want to say she does she works in marketing or something for uh one of the sole RB radio stations in Dallas.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: And so I literally I saw her probably about two months ago at an event, and we did what we always do, gave her a hug, chatted up, and um, you know, it's funny because we laugh every time we see each other because it's uh it's so random that we would end up in the same city.
- 28:48SPEAKER_03: But but it's amazing that of all the high school girls, I was gonna name somebody else, you know, and then I said, Oh, Jay Jones, because because I remember the only I had never heard of Jay Jones right until a uh one a college uh high school coach that I know I was talking to him, he said, I said, Listen, I'm going to this game, Beechcroft is playing so and so.
- 29:09SPEAKER_03: I said, Who who am I looking for?
- 29:10SPEAKER_03: Who should I watch for?
- 29:11SPEAKER_03: And he said, and he said, look for whatever number she is.
- 29:15SPEAKER_03: And I looked her up and I watched her play once and I went, Oh my goodness.
- 29:19SPEAKER_03: And then the AP AP voted on all state players in, you know, for Ohio.
- 29:27SPEAKER_03: We didn't, I didn't, we didn't vote because we were not, you know, we were like 12 years old when we were doing this, but um, we didn't vote, but the AP voted, and whoever was the AP reporter at the time, he came over to me and he said, Who who do you who do you think?
- 29:39SPEAKER_03: Tell me who you we and I'm like, you know, this woman named this girl named Jay Jones, she's like one of the better players that I've seen.
- 29:44SPEAKER_03: I I would definitely put her up.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: And he's like, Oh, okay, I'll put her at all state.
- 29:47SPEAKER_03: That was it.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: I just remember that conversation like a a hundred years ago.
- 29:51SPEAKER_03: But Jay Jones would have absolutely no idea who I am, but it's uh uh but it's pretty amazing.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: I hadn't thought about her in in years.
- 29:57SPEAKER_03: I can't believe I picked that name.
- 29:59SPEAKER_03: You know who I was gonna pick was Christy Callahan.
- 30:01SPEAKER_03: Amy Cherubini?
- 30:03SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, but Christy Callahan.
- 30:05SPEAKER_03: Do you remember her?
- 30:05SPEAKER_03: No.
- 30:06SPEAKER_03: Christy Callahan was on Bishop Waterson, and they made that run to the state final, and she was this really little guard who went berserk in the states that one year.
- 30:16SPEAKER_00: Anyway, the only two players I remember are Jay Jones and Amy Cherubini.
- 30:20SPEAKER_03: Amy Cherubini was was a player too, yeah.
- 30:22SPEAKER_03: Anyway, I'm sure.
- 30:23SPEAKER_03: I think she was at Utica.
- 30:25SPEAKER_00: I mean we're going deep in the archive.
- 30:26SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I was gonna say we're gonna go on to YouTube and we're gonna say, when did people stop listening?
- 30:30SPEAKER_03: And we're gonna be able to pinpoint it, you know.
- 30:32SPEAKER_03: As soon as as soon as I said, remember we were at the Columbus Dispatch?
- 30:36SPEAKER_03: And then it would stop, yeah.
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and so if if you know, the the point I want to get at to you is if if you're a parent and you think your kid can play in college, if you really will just go have an honest conversation with the coach, because coaches have seen all sorts of players, and they can tell you, like, and a lot of kids, you know, there's this coach in Dallas, uh, he was at Dallas Carter, and Carter has a really used to have a big time program.
- 31:06SPEAKER_00: They were had a 30 for 30 on them uh from ESPN, and their coach used to say to the team, to parents, tell me if you want your kid to play college football.
- 31:20SPEAKER_00: Yes, I want my kid to play college football.
- 31:23SPEAKER_00: If you want your kid to play college football, I'll find a spot for them.
- 31:28SPEAKER_00: Might be Iowa Westland, might be northeastern Montana State, right?
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: You know, but if you want to play, I'll find a spot for you.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: And what I'm telling you is, and he will tell you, hey, I think my kids can go to Texas.
- 31:43SPEAKER_00: No, Mr.
- 31:44SPEAKER_00: Taylor, your kid's not going to Texas, right?
- 31:48SPEAKER_00: What about Prairie?
- 31:50SPEAKER_00: No, Mr.
- 31:51SPEAKER_00: Taylor, your son's not gonna play division one football at any level.
- 31:55SPEAKER_00: He can play, you know, one double A.
- 31:58SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 31:58SPEAKER_00: Or, hey, Mr.
- 32:00SPEAKER_00: Taylor, your kid really needs to play division two, really nice programs, they'll pay 80% of his education, da, da, da.
- 32:08SPEAKER_00: We'll get him some grants to pay the other 20% of that.
- 32:10SPEAKER_00: But if you the coaches know, and so you don't need to pay a scouting service, you need to talk to the coordinator, talk to the position coach, they'll tell you.
- 32:19SPEAKER_00: And if you're really bold, if you're really bold, you can talk to the other coach in your conference in the offseason.
- 32:27SPEAKER_00: You run into them.
- 32:27SPEAKER_03: They all know, they all know.
- 32:29SPEAKER_00: Ain't no secrets, man.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: They all know.
- 32:31SPEAKER_03: That's what I remember.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: Ain't no secrets.
- 32:33SPEAKER_03: Even as a reporter, all those millions of years ago, I talked to all the coaches, and after a while, you know what happened, and you know what happened.
- 32:40SPEAKER_03: The same names come up.
- 32:41SPEAKER_03: And then what happens is then all the coaches start calling you and saying, Hey, did you see?
- 32:47SPEAKER_03: Did you I just saw somebody.
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: Have you seen that person?
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: And you know that's how it works, you know.
- 32:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so you don't have to spend$500 for a scouting report.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: Uh, and with Huddle and everything else, you can put your tape out there.
- 32:58SPEAKER_00: Coaches are always on the prowl for players, they will find players.
- 33:04SPEAKER_00: You don't need to pay$500 for some uh for some recruiting service with which has an ulterior motive to uh to do it for you.
- 33:12SPEAKER_00: Bottom line for me, put that money in the 529C like I did.
- 33:17SPEAKER_00: Pay for your kids' college.
- 33:18SPEAKER_00: Don't be banking on no no uh company to write a scouting report.
- 33:23SPEAKER_00: Uh you know, don't do it.
- 33:26SPEAKER_03: Bottom line for me, team sports are great for kids, they make a ton of friends, great socializing, they learn to be part of a team, keeps them out of trouble.
- 33:35SPEAKER_03: But I'm telling you right now, your kid's not playing in college, so don't spend the money on it.
- 33:41SPEAKER_00: Uh here's the other thing, and just just a lad on.
- 33:45SPEAKER_00: If your kid is at a school like mine that sent a lot of kids to college, then you can look at how your kid fits in and know.
- 33:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 33:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you'll know.
- 33:57SPEAKER_03: But listen, you'll you you knew the day you went to the first practice, you know.
- 34:02SPEAKER_00: Let me tell you something about this because it's interesting.
- 34:05SPEAKER_00: Uh, because my kid, uh, he got he was a really good player, he got hurt his junior year, and then he, you know, then once you get hurt in a place like DeSoto, which has won two of the last three state chapters.
- 34:17SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're you're you're forgotten.
- 34:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're forgotten.
- 34:19SPEAKER_00: And so he got kind of caught up in the shuffle as a senior.
- 34:22SPEAKER_00: But before then, he was doing really well, but I picked him up from practice, so he me picking him up means he's probably a sophomore, or uh, but it was like a spring thing.
- 34:35SPEAKER_00: And I remember this because we were driving, driving off the lot, and he said, Hey Dad, you see that kid over there?
- 34:41SPEAKER_00: He's a freshman.
- 34:43SPEAKER_00: And I looked at him and I said, Oh, he's playing D1.
- 34:47SPEAKER_00: He said, How do you know?
- 34:48SPEAKER_00: I said, It's about it's about genetics, man.
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah, if that if he's that big as a freshman, then he's going to play division one football.
- 34:57SPEAKER_00: He hit the genetic jackpot, my son.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 35:00SPEAKER_00: Unfortunately, that you did not.
- 35:02SPEAKER_03: And that and that's and that's a that's a way to say so.
- 35:05SPEAKER_03: My my daughter, as you know, played a very high-level basketball.
- 35:08SPEAKER_03: She she she could have played, she could have probably, if she wanted to, played either high D3 or low D1 in college.
- 35:15SPEAKER_03: Right, but very, very small for a basketball player.
- 35:18SPEAKER_03: She was on one of her uh AAU teams, and it was this thing, and there were a bunch of scouts there.
- 35:25SPEAKER_03: Scouts looked at one player on her team, it was the one girl on her team who was six feet tall.
- 35:29SPEAKER_03: Nobody else.
- 35:30SPEAKER_03: And was she the best player on the team?
- 35:32SPEAKER_03: No, she wasn't, but six feet tall, didn't matter, you know, and that's that's the reality.
- 35:37SPEAKER_00: No, no, and for further context, just what you're talking about.
- 35:41SPEAKER_00: My son was on the varsity as a junior.
- 35:44SPEAKER_00: The starting defensive tackles uh on that particular team were Byron Murphy, first round pick of the Seattle Seahawks, and Shamar, I forget Shamar's last name, uh, second round pick of the Chicago Bears.
- 35:58SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: Uh Byron went to Texas, Shamar went to Texas AM.
- 36:02SPEAKER_00: And so what I'm saying is, when you're looking at that kind of high school talent, uh-huh, you know right away.
- 36:08SPEAKER_00: That's why I said, you know, I can figure out where my kid fits in just by how he's competing with that caliber of talent around.
- 36:17SPEAKER_00: Of course, of course.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: And I didn't lie to myself about it.
- 36:19SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you you you know, you know immediately.
- 36:22SPEAKER_03: You know, you know immediately.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: And plus in my particular case, I knew immediately because I knew who the kid's father is.
- 36:28SPEAKER_03: That's why I know in my particular case.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: I had too much too much pride and vanity to go down that road.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: Right, but you know, uh, you know, you know, so Jeremiah Smith scores four touchdowns for Ohio State this year, this week, uh against Illinois.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: And uh put on a magnificent show, had 200 yards receiving.
- 36:51SPEAKER_03: And somebody, somebody neighbor to win the Heisman Trophy now, too.
- 36:57SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 36:58SPEAKER_03: He is he is according to a lot of people.
- 37:00SPEAKER_00: I'm not disputing he's a favorite.
- 37:02SPEAKER_00: I'm talking about realistically, can he?
- 37:05SPEAKER_00: There's none of the now, it's still early in the year, none of the overhyped quarterbacks are playing worth a flip.
- 37:13SPEAKER_00: And so you could get a non-traditional player win the Heisman this year.
- 37:18SPEAKER_00: Like, if we if you were going to the Heisman right now, it would be let's say they had four people going to the Heisman ceremony right now, in my opinion.
- 37:30SPEAKER_00: You'd have Minsa, you'd have Malachi Tony, yeah, you'd have Jeremiah and Kamario Taylor from Mississippi.
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: That's exactly who I was gonna say.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: Exactly the four I was gonna say.
- 37:41SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and so to me, those are four best players in college football as of right now.
- 37:47SPEAKER_00: Now, Minsa will have his date against Notre Dame in November.
- 37:53SPEAKER_00: That's the only tough team he's gonna play until perhaps the ACC championship.
- 37:58SPEAKER_00: So that's for him and Tony.
- 38:00SPEAKER_00: That's that's their game to put up a shut up.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: Uh Jeremiah Smith's gonna have several opportunities to do the thing, and Camario will have several opportunities at SEC to have a Heisman moment.
- 38:12SPEAKER_03: He's he's he's gonna have more of a problem because Mississippi State isn't as visible.
- 38:16SPEAKER_00: Um matter of fact, he just getting invited to the ceremony.
- 38:20SPEAKER_00: He didn't win it this year.
- 38:21SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 38:22SPEAKER_00: But he's just a freshman.
- 38:24SPEAKER_00: He could he can generate so much hype that by the time his junior year rolls around, you know, he could be that guy.
- 38:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think that's I think that's right.
- 38:34SPEAKER_03: I think that you know, Jeremiah Smith, use the word Heisman moment, Jeremiah Smith could have a Heisman moment against Oregon or Indiana in the next uh in the next month and a half for sure.
- 38:48SPEAKER_00: But he's been phenomenal.
- 38:49SPEAKER_00: Uh you know, if he made that catch, that third down catch against uh Jeremiah Smith is so good that I remember the cat the balls he doesn't catch.
- 38:59SPEAKER_05: Right, right.
- 39:00SPEAKER_00: That's how good he is.
- 39:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 39:02SPEAKER_00: And there's something to be said, you know, he is a he is a human, so he is allowed to drop a pass.
- 39:06SPEAKER_00: Of course.
- 39:07SPEAKER_00: Um it's a shame he dropped that one.
- 39:10SPEAKER_00: Uh, but you know, he's he, you know, he had a spectacular game in that day.
- 39:14SPEAKER_00: I think he had those, I think he was well over 100 yards in that game.
- 39:18SPEAKER_03: He he did, you know, and yeah, and so but you were saying about Jeremiah Smith.
- 39:23SPEAKER_00: You sort of you were contemplating you know, so the question that came up from all of this is is he the best player ever at Ohio State?
- 39:31SPEAKER_00: And I go, dude, who somebody was having that debate, and I go, that's classic recency bias.
- 39:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Ohio State's had seven Heisman trophy winners, so R.G.
- 39:41SPEAKER_03: Griffin won back-to-back Heisman trophies.
- 39:43SPEAKER_03: It's hard to it's hard for anybody to be better than him.
- 39:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 39:46SPEAKER_00: It starts with the seven Heisman Trophy winners.
- 39:49SPEAKER_00: But if I think a better conversation is he's the best player in the last 25 years since you know the turn of the century, and you can have that conversation.
- 39:59SPEAKER_00: Um but you know, uh you and I were talking off the show beforehand.
- 40:04SPEAKER_00: I was like, the problem at Ohio State is and we're very fortunate to be uh alums and fans of this program, is Ohio State has at least one great player every year.
- 40:18SPEAKER_00: Most years they have, I would say most years we have three to five great players, right?
- 40:25SPEAKER_00: And so to say that this is the best of the best, I can't I don't really feel comfortable saying that.
- 40:32SPEAKER_00: One is I haven't thought much about it, but um state has so many great players that you forget some of the great players that have come through.
- 40:42SPEAKER_00: Like J.K.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: Dobbins was a great player while he was here.
- 40:47SPEAKER_00: Eddie George was a great player.
- 40:49SPEAKER_00: Keith Byers, the year he ran for 1700 yards, unbelievable was like unstoppable.
- 40:58SPEAKER_03: Plus, he was a lefty when he threw the halfback option, which made him my favorite.
- 41:02SPEAKER_03: Or you know, or players like everybody forgets about him, players like Troy Smith, unbelievable.
- 41:07SPEAKER_03: JT JT Baylor Pace.
- 41:10SPEAKER_03: Orlando Pace, uh Braxton Miller for like a couple of years.
- 41:13SPEAKER_00: Oh my god, Braxton Miller, yeah.
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: Amazing, yeah.
- 41:16SPEAKER_00: So um, so I I could never say, and we're not even gonna talk about all the receivers.
- 41:21SPEAKER_03: Oh you know, it's like you forget that Terry McLaurin played at Ohio State, and he's and Terry McClorrh is a phenomenal receiver who's buried in Washington.
- 41:29SPEAKER_03: Nobody sees him, you know.
- 41:30SPEAKER_03: Chris O'Lobby, you were talking about beforehand, yeah.
- 41:34SPEAKER_00: So he's in the conversation if you're gonna talk about the best players ever played at Ohio State.
- 41:40SPEAKER_00: But there have been so many great players.
- 41:44SPEAKER_00: Uh, and he still got time, you know, he's still got nine more games, ten more games to separate himself from the group.
- 41:50SPEAKER_00: Now he's phenomenal.
- 41:52SPEAKER_00: Uh, and he's been the hype, he's been worth every bit of hype and every bit of money they need.
- 41:58SPEAKER_00: Uh, but I just can't say he's the best.
- 42:01SPEAKER_00: Uh, I'm willing to have a conversation after I do some more research.
- 42:05SPEAKER_00: But again, it starts with the Heisman Trophy winners.
- 42:07SPEAKER_00: Like, you can't even enter the group.
- 42:09SPEAKER_00: It's like a lot of times, and this was especially true in Dallas, when they're trying to get former Cowboys into the Hall of Fame, it's like you got to be in the Ring of Honor in Dallas.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: In order to talk about you trying to get to the Hall of Fame, you ain't even in the Ring of Honor.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, fair.
- 42:27SPEAKER_00: So if we're gonna talk about the greatest that ever played Ohio State, now we give a pass to some linemen because linemen don't win the Heisman.
- 42:35SPEAKER_00: But you damn near got to win the Heisman before we can even have this conversation.
- 42:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but but but then you also can look at, you know, like Chris Spielman, who might have been one of the best college football players I've ever seen.
- 42:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, uh, who was our two-way corner before Chris Gamble?
- 42:52SPEAKER_00: Oh uh two-way player before it became fashionable again.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 42:56SPEAKER_03: Uh it's it's by the way, Travis Hunter had an interception this weekend.
- 43:00SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I saw that.
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 43:01SPEAKER_00: Uh Ryan Shazier might have been considered great when during his time here.
- 43:06SPEAKER_00: You know, um Jeff Lakuda was great.
- 43:08SPEAKER_00: That's why it was a third pick overall.
- 43:10SPEAKER_00: He was just a he was just an NFL bust, but he was great in college.
- 43:13SPEAKER_03: Jim Lachey, many many in our in our year, you know.
- 43:16SPEAKER_03: Uh yeah, it's it's it's remarkable.
- 43:18SPEAKER_03: But but I do think that um I do think that this is one of the years where you're you're right, there isn't a quarterback who has distinguished himself, with the exception of possibly Mensa, but who hasn't distinguished himself enough yet.
- 43:34SPEAKER_03: And Ohio State plays nationally every week, and Jeremiah Smith's a spectacular player.
- 43:39SPEAKER_03: He could have a big, much like Mendoza had the big Heisman moment uh against Penn State, even though the even though the receiver actually had the moment, but you know, but he did have that moment against uh against Penn State last year.
- 43:52SPEAKER_03: You could see that happening, uh Jeremiah Smith against Indiana this year.
- 43:55SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I can see that.
- 43:57SPEAKER_00: Uh bottom line for me, I'm not ready to say uh Jeremiah Smith is the best ever, but I'm gonna put him in the conversation, and he has a damn good chance to win the Heisman Trophy this year.
- 44:09SPEAKER_03: But yeah, but bottom, bottom line for me, uh I I tend to agree.
- 44:15SPEAKER_03: I think I think the Heisman Trophy winner this year probably won't be a quarterback.
- 44:20SPEAKER_03: And if that's the case, I think it'll either be, as you said earlier, Jeremia Smith or the receiver from Miami, Amalachi Tony.
- 44:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 44:29SPEAKER_00: Uh so hey, don't forget to subscribe, rate, review the bottom line on sports.
- 44:34SPEAKER_00: So until we chat again, uh you guys take care.
- 44:36SPEAKER_00: We'll see you next week.
- 44:38SPEAKER_01: All right, we'll see you next week.
