- 0:02Speaker 1: Stephen Nesbitt is here. You can catch all of his
- 0:04Speaker 1: articles in The Athletic and give him a follow at
- 0:06Speaker 1: Stephen Jay and has bit on Twitter.
- 0:08Speaker 2: Stephen, good to see you. Hows everything good guys?
- 0:11Speaker 3: How you guys doing.
- 0:12Speaker 2: We're good, We're good.
- 0:13Speaker 1: Let's start with the column you put together with Chad
- 0:15Speaker 1: Jennings on contender schedules. The rest of the way we
- 0:18Speaker 1: obsess over schedules for these last few weeks. We do
- 0:21Speaker 1: it all the time. I get to read the schedules out,
- 0:23Speaker 1: what do you think? What did you write about?
- 0:26Speaker 4: Yeah, this is an exercise we started last year where
- 0:28Speaker 4: I find, as a fan growing up, like you're very
- 0:31Speaker 4: aware of your team's schedule and it matters deeply to
- 0:33Speaker 4: you when you get into the stretch run. And yet
- 0:36Speaker 4: it's pretty hard to keep track of what everybody's schedule live,
- 0:38Speaker 4: and so we tried to limit it to the teams
- 0:41Speaker 4: that have a realistic shot of the postseason. And this
- 0:45Speaker 4: was looking at the next two weeks. We'll do it
- 0:47Speaker 4: again in two more weeks and have the last two
- 0:49Speaker 4: weeks of the regular season and sort of a bite
- 0:51Speaker 4: sized way to look ahead and say, Okay, we're trailing
- 0:53Speaker 4: this team. By two games in the standings, but our
- 0:56Speaker 4: schedule looks a lot easier coming up. Let's take advantage
- 0:58Speaker 4: of this stretch and then maybe they'll have a hard
- 1:01Speaker 4: time moving forward. It's a good way to see that. Okay,
- 1:03Speaker 4: the Padres have a super easy schedule the rest of
- 1:05Speaker 4: the way, The Dodgers have an easy schedule. The Yankees
- 1:07Speaker 4: are gonna go through it right now, and then it
- 1:08Speaker 4: gets easy after that that.
- 1:10Speaker 3: The Tigers have a little.
- 1:11Speaker 4: Bit of a couple of tough series of the Mets
- 1:14Speaker 4: and Yankees coming up. So I find it as a
- 1:16Speaker 4: fun way to in sort of the dog days of
- 1:19Speaker 4: August and September, look ahead a little bit and consider
- 1:22Speaker 4: what we have coming up next.
- 1:24Speaker 5: Okay, So then I'll ask, can anybody outside the playoffs
- 1:27Speaker 5: use their schedule to their advantage to make a run
- 1:29Speaker 5: and get in the Rangers, the Royals, or someone having
- 1:35Speaker 5: a tough schedule like maybe the Mariners having a tough
- 1:38Speaker 5: schedule or the Mets having a tough schedule to make
- 1:41Speaker 5: a run and get back into this thing.
- 1:43Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:43Speaker 4: The playoff picture, unfortunately, is like pretty sewn up at
- 1:47Speaker 4: this point. I think the Rangers have a shot, and
- 1:49Speaker 4: that's probably it. I don't think the Guardians. I don't
- 1:52Speaker 4: think the Royals are probably gonna gonna make the run.
- 1:56Speaker 4: You know, the Mariners are certainly susceptible, and so if
- 1:58Speaker 4: we look at who they have coming up this live,
- 2:01Speaker 4: they got a tough road, right the Rays, Braves, Cardinals, Angels.
- 2:05Speaker 4: I'm sorry, they have a good road. It's to the
- 2:07Speaker 4: wrong color here. The Mayor's a very friendly schedule the
- 2:09Speaker 4: next two weeks and one of the more friendly schedules
- 2:12Speaker 4: the rest of the way.
- 2:14Speaker 3: And if you look at the.
- 2:15Speaker 4: Rangers, they have Diamondbacks, Astros, good team, Brewers really good team,
- 2:20Speaker 4: Mets good team, and so that's a much tougher next
- 2:23Speaker 4: two weeks. I think we're seeing the twelve teams that
- 2:26Speaker 4: are going to get in. At this point, the National
- 2:28Speaker 4: League get not really a contest. I think the closest
- 2:31Speaker 4: team is the Reds, and there are maybe four back
- 2:33Speaker 4: of the Mets at this point. So I think we
- 2:35Speaker 4: have our playoff field essentially set. But we've been fool before,
- 2:38Speaker 4: even last year with the way the Mets and Tigers
- 2:41Speaker 4: closed things.
- 2:41Speaker 3: Out thanks thanks to Scott.
- 2:43Speaker 5: Scott thinks the White Sox are getting in this year
- 2:45Speaker 5: because amis scheduled So thanks for because I asked this
- 2:48Speaker 5: question earlier on Twitter, so Scott. Scott said the White
- 2:50Speaker 5: Sox were in possibly because their schedule lightens up.
- 2:53Speaker 3: So I don't know, I don't know. I thank you, Steven.
- 2:56Speaker 1: With banana ball, they're in.
- 2:59Speaker 2: You can eighty nine games in one game, and don't
- 3:03Speaker 2: say that.
- 3:03Speaker 5: Because banana ball is legit. Banana ball is legit. All right,
- 3:06Speaker 5: I'm gonna switch topics here a little bit. As a
- 3:08Speaker 5: left handed hitter, you talked about Roman Anthony and how
- 3:12Speaker 5: they let him hit off lefties except for the first
- 3:14Speaker 5: game of his career where they pinch hit for him
- 3:15Speaker 5: against the lefty. Since then, they've let him hit. He's learned,
- 3:18Speaker 5: he's doing better. I know his numbers aren't as great. Listen,
- 3:20Speaker 5: no lefty is ever gonna hit as good against lefties
- 3:23Speaker 5: as they do against right He's no. There might be
- 3:26Speaker 5: a guy, okay, I know overall, okay, just because you
- 3:29Speaker 5: don't see him as much, it's a tougher matchup, all
- 3:31Speaker 5: that stuff, right, But what have the Red Sox learned
- 3:34Speaker 5: by letting him do this? And why aren't other teams
- 3:36Speaker 5: doing this? Like the Orioles with Jackson Holiday, they were
- 3:39Speaker 5: like I can't hit lefties right, and then all these
- 3:41Speaker 5: other teams like, oh, automatically, it's like platoon, platoon, platoon.
- 3:44Speaker 3: So what are the Red Sox showing the rest of
- 3:46Speaker 3: the league.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I think this is a I think a very
- 3:50Speaker 4: unfortunate trend since I started covering baseball in twenty fourteen
- 3:53Speaker 4: twenty fifteen is the prevalence of the platoon. No one
- 3:58Speaker 4: likes to see it. The players certainly don't like to see.
- 4:00Speaker 4: They fear it when they come up. They don't want
- 4:01Speaker 4: to turn into a platoon guy. And especially left handed
- 4:04Speaker 4: hitters are so susceptiblely getting pulled out, even if the
- 4:07Speaker 4: manager calls it a rest day, it's effectively the same thing.
- 4:09Speaker 4: You're shieldium from a left handed pitcher, often the very
- 4:11Speaker 4: best ones in the league, and you're hoping that one
- 4:14Speaker 4: of these guys that's a right hander who just excels
- 4:16Speaker 4: against opposite handed pitching. You know, your Rob Ruth Sneinder
- 4:19Speaker 4: is your Miguel Andrew Hars can come in off the
- 4:22Speaker 4: bench and spell that lefty. And I think it's extremely unfortunate.
- 4:26Speaker 4: I think you guys would have something to say about
- 4:27Speaker 4: this as well, but as well, but I understand what
- 4:30Speaker 4: the numbers say. I also understand, having just written about this,
- 4:34Speaker 4: how good left handed pitching is right now. This is
- 4:37Speaker 4: the best we've seen it compared to right handed pitching.
- 4:39Speaker 4: The lefty era across the league is three point eight,
- 4:43Speaker 4: the right era is four point three to one. It's
- 4:46Speaker 4: not particularly close.
- 4:47Speaker 3: Right now.
- 4:47Speaker 4: This is the largest golf we've ever seen in the
- 4:49Speaker 4: era era, which is going back to nineteen thirteen when
- 4:52Speaker 4: became an official stat And so lefty pitching is so
- 4:55Speaker 4: good right now, and left on left is as hard
- 4:57Speaker 4: as ever been. But the other thing we wrote about
- 5:00Speaker 4: in that story a couple of weeks back is right
- 5:02Speaker 4: on left ain't good either. The platoon split is basically
- 5:04Speaker 4: vanished for right handed hitters. Alex Bregman had good thoughts
- 5:08Speaker 4: on that they're getting pitched differently, and guys have more pitches,
- 5:11Speaker 4: they're throwing harder from the left side, they're willing to
- 5:13Speaker 4: go to different areas come inside on the right handed hitter.
- 5:16Speaker 4: So listen, if there's ever you know a time you're
- 5:18Speaker 4: going to give left handed batters a chance to actually
- 5:21Speaker 4: face both hands, I think it's right now. Let them
- 5:23Speaker 4: show they can do something, because if you are not
- 5:26Speaker 4: going to let them face that lefty. The one time
- 5:28Speaker 4: you face a lefty'll, you know, this week a left
- 5:31Speaker 4: handed starter. Good luck when you get to the postseason
- 5:34Speaker 4: and need Roman Anthony to face, you know, Tanner Scott
- 5:37Speaker 4: or one of these Yankees left handed starters. You need
- 5:40Speaker 4: these guys to have experience facing top level left handeds.
- 5:44Speaker 4: They're not facing them on the miners. And so that
- 5:46Speaker 4: was what this story came out of, was a conversation
- 5:48Speaker 4: I had with Roman Anthony, who I thought was so
- 5:51Speaker 4: smart on this topic, so thoughtful on it, where he said,
- 5:53Speaker 4: you know, the miners. My breakout year in twenty twenty three,
- 5:57Speaker 4: he won Red Sox Minor League Hitter of the Year.
- 6:01Speaker 4: And yet he did it batting I think like two
- 6:03Speaker 4: fifteen or so against lefties. He's like, my numbers like
- 6:06Speaker 4: hit it. They obscured the fact that I couldn't hit lefties.
- 6:09Speaker 4: And so I spent that whole offseason facing lefty pro
- 6:12Speaker 4: hitters down in South Florida where he's from, facing every
- 6:15Speaker 4: sort of angle pitching machine, the traject like everything that
- 6:18Speaker 4: was at his disposal. He went after it to try
- 6:21Speaker 4: to get better against lefties because he hadn't faced like
- 6:23Speaker 4: any of us. He didn't face any as a kid
- 6:25Speaker 4: and has been great against lefties ever since. And so
- 6:27Speaker 4: when he came up, the Red Sox were thinking they
- 6:29Speaker 4: would probably use him part time against lefties. And he
- 6:33Speaker 4: had some awful starts right he struck up four times
- 6:37Speaker 4: against Christopher Sanchez in a complete game for the Phillies lefty.
- 6:40Speaker 4: But then they gave him another chance against Franber Valdez
- 6:43Speaker 4: and some of these other lefties from the like Chicago
- 6:46Speaker 4: and the Cubs and some other teams like that, and
- 6:48Speaker 4: he's he's paid it off to paid off that opportunity
- 6:51Speaker 4: where he's got a nine hundred oh ps against righty's.
- 6:55Speaker 4: He's crushing righties. It's the reason he is in just
- 6:57Speaker 4: part of a season. Is in the Rookie of the
- 6:59Speaker 4: Year conversation. But he's also more than holding his own
- 7:01Speaker 4: against lefties. He's got like a one to twenty oh
- 7:03Speaker 4: ps plus. This guy can hit. He can hit for average, certainly,
- 7:07Speaker 4: and he's showing a little bit of power too against lefties.
- 7:10Speaker 4: The one thing that stands out there is velocity is
- 7:13Speaker 4: not a problem, but his eye just seems to be
- 7:15Speaker 4: more naturally geared toward facing right handed pitching. Where his
- 7:19Speaker 4: you know he has walked to strike out. Rachel is
- 7:21Speaker 4: much much worse. He's striking a lot against lefties. But listen,
- 7:24Speaker 4: I'd rather him go through these bumps as a twenty
- 7:26Speaker 4: one year old and throughout the course of his career
- 7:29Speaker 4: not getting platooned than just assume at twenty one years old,
- 7:33Speaker 4: platoon him now and hopefully he figures it out down
- 7:35Speaker 4: the road. No, let him figure out now. If you
- 7:37Speaker 4: can't do it in October, okay, you know, you make
- 7:39Speaker 4: a call then, but in August and September, give the
- 7:42Speaker 4: kid a chance.
- 7:44Speaker 6: But obviously, Roman Anthony is an elite prospect. Are we
- 7:49Speaker 6: going to even base on all the numbers that you
- 7:51Speaker 6: just said? Are we going to go away from this
- 7:54Speaker 6: because the game, I mean, are we going to continue
- 7:56Speaker 6: to get even worse platoon splits here because of how
- 8:00Speaker 6: cheap teams are. ROMEI Gonzalez will always cost way less,
- 8:03Speaker 6: and I know it's not a comparable position will always
- 8:06Speaker 6: cost way less. Rob Refschneider will always cost way less,
- 8:10Speaker 6: just on the Red Sox team. Both those guys have
- 8:13Speaker 6: a higher success, higher ops against lefties. So because teams
- 8:19Speaker 6: are going for the cheap, we're gonna go and get
- 8:21Speaker 6: somebody cheap and we're just not gonna need to play
- 8:24Speaker 6: those guys against lefties. Or does there have to be
- 8:27Speaker 6: almost like a whole MLB shift for this to change.
- 8:33Speaker 4: I think there's gotta be a larger shift than certainly
- 8:35Speaker 4: just Roman Anthony figuring things out right. Like, look at
- 8:37Speaker 4: all the top prospects we'd get, like a Jackson Holliday
- 8:39Speaker 4: to the major and they just don't hit the way
- 8:41Speaker 4: you thought they were going to the way they projected to.
- 8:44Speaker 4: Given their hit tool and all the production they had
- 8:45Speaker 4: of the miners and their prospect status, it is so
- 8:49Speaker 4: much easier to say, hey, Andrew har is out there,
- 8:52Speaker 4: we can pay five hundred thousand dollars to take on
- 8:54Speaker 4: the rest of his contract, and we have a guy
- 8:55Speaker 4: we feel comfortable in a corner of field, spot or
- 8:57Speaker 4: first base or DH and you can hit lefties. So
- 9:01Speaker 4: I think there are enough of those guys out there
- 9:03Speaker 4: that we will continue to see this platooning happen. I
- 9:06Speaker 4: am not at all forecasting the end of platooning. I'm saying,
- 9:08Speaker 4: in maybe smaller samples, the truly great left handed hitters there,
- 9:14Speaker 4: we're seeing it, you know, a sort of pivot point
- 9:17Speaker 4: I think in the game where maybe we've maybe we've
- 9:20Speaker 4: gone a little bit too far with how unwilling we
- 9:23Speaker 4: are to let them go through hard times against lefties,
- 9:26Speaker 4: and there needs to be a moment where you say, Okay,
- 9:29Speaker 4: we're gonna let him. We're gonna take a month here,
- 9:30Speaker 4: We're gonna let him face every left he we get
- 9:32Speaker 4: thrown in there. We'll rest him some other day and
- 9:35Speaker 4: we'll accept the numbers probably are not in our favor.
- 9:37Speaker 4: But in the long term, we need a Roman Anthony
- 9:39Speaker 4: or a Jackson Holiday to be able to hit left
- 9:41Speaker 4: handed pitching, and so you know, we can platoon part
- 9:44Speaker 4: of our lineup.
- 9:45Speaker 3: He's not in that part anymore.
- 9:47Speaker 4: We are going to have him be an everyday regular,
- 9:48Speaker 4: a left or right handed pitching starter, And so I
- 9:52Speaker 4: would I would hope we are headed in that direction
- 9:55Speaker 4: where at least we're a little more opportunistic with who
- 9:57Speaker 4: gets platooned rather than just sort of naturally assuming, hey,
- 10:00Speaker 4: everybody on the bench, all the ready's on the bench,
- 10:01Speaker 4: we're going to shuffle you into the lineup just because
- 10:04Speaker 4: that's you know, that's what you do against the left
- 10:07Speaker 4: handed pitcher.
- 10:09Speaker 1: FTFAM designer clothes can be expensive, but we want our
- 10:13Speaker 1: clothes to look good, we want to feel good. We
- 10:15Speaker 1: want them to be affordable and krats. If you tell
- 10:17Speaker 1: me that I can wear a T shirt that looks
- 10:20Speaker 1: like it's tailored but it's not actually tailored and it
- 10:22Speaker 1: just comes that way, then sign me up for True Classic.
- 10:26Speaker 6: Have to you gotta sign up for it because these
- 10:28Speaker 6: shirts are soft, they're thin, they're durable, and they're very versatile.
- 10:34Speaker 6: You can wear them to the gym, you can wear
- 10:36Speaker 6: them out to a nice dinner. Let's get after it
- 10:39Speaker 6: because these shirts are the real deal.
- 10:41Speaker 2: They are.
- 10:42Speaker 3: Check it out.
- 10:42Speaker 1: I've got one of the Performance ones. It's a nice
- 10:44Speaker 1: blue fits well. I can go to the gym, I
- 10:48Speaker 1: can go out, I can do ft in a shirt
- 10:50Speaker 1: like this. Ft fam, there's a reason why True Classic
- 10:54Speaker 1: has sold over twenty five million shirts to more than
- 10:56Speaker 1: five million customers, and they are racking up over two hundred.
- 10:59Speaker 2: Thousand five star reviews. See for yourself with our exclusive.
- 11:03Speaker 1: Link at True Classic dot com slash foul to say
- 11:05Speaker 1: that's True Classic dot com slash f oul All right.
- 11:10Speaker 6: AJ hates power rankings, so I want you to give
- 11:12Speaker 6: your power rankings for the six expansion cities and the
- 11:20Speaker 6: realignment of how those cities could affect realignment in Major
- 11:25Speaker 6: League Baseball.
- 11:26Speaker 3: Okay, I'll go with the six that I just named.
- 11:28Speaker 3: Is that okay? In my recent story?
- 11:30Speaker 4: Okay, So the six that I had I had in
- 11:32Speaker 4: the east, Orlando, Raleigh, Nashville, and in the West.
- 11:36Speaker 3: I had thank you, thank you.
- 11:38Speaker 4: It's easier West, I had Salt Lake City, Portland, and Austin.
- 11:43Speaker 4: And so if I'm power ranking them, I'm thinking it's
- 11:46Speaker 4: gonna be one from the East, one from the west.
- 11:47Speaker 3: But I'll just do it all as one.
- 11:49Speaker 4: Austin I think is last on my tier, mostly because
- 11:52Speaker 4: they don't have sort of terribly organized effort. There is
- 11:55Speaker 4: starting it, but it's sort of it's a couple of
- 11:57Speaker 4: entrepreneurs who are starting the effort. It's not like it's
- 11:59Speaker 4: a huge corporation. It's not like it's in set Lake
- 12:01Speaker 4: City they have all the money that they're like, hey,
- 12:03Speaker 4: we're starting the effort. No, it's a couple like guys
- 12:05Speaker 4: with a dream. And so Austin sure has a lot
- 12:08Speaker 4: of things in his favor, but not the organization so far. Orlando,
- 12:12Speaker 4: I don't think baseball is crazy about another team in Orlando,
- 12:15Speaker 4: they could get relocated. I suppose if the Rays end
- 12:17Speaker 4: up as they get sold deciding they don't want to
- 12:20Speaker 4: get that ballpark or can't get that ballpark in Tampa
- 12:22Speaker 4: or Saint Pete, so I put them there. So I
- 12:27Speaker 4: have left Nashville, Raleigh, Salt Lake City, and Portland, who
- 12:30Speaker 4: it's close for all those, so actually ridden them separately
- 12:32Speaker 4: because it doesn't make sense to do them together. I
- 12:34Speaker 4: think if Portland is less likely than Salt Lake City.
- 12:37Speaker 4: Salt Lake City has every piece, as I wrote in
- 12:39Speaker 4: that piece, like it's it's as turnkey as you're gonna
- 12:42Speaker 4: get for an expansion franchise. They have a stadium site
- 12:44Speaker 4: that's already shovel ready or getting very very close to it.
- 12:47Speaker 4: They have all the money in the Miller family that's
- 12:49Speaker 4: willing to bankroll this. They have bipartisans support everyone locally
- 12:54Speaker 4: or so many people in local politics and state politics
- 12:58Speaker 4: over there in Utah want this to happen. That's really
- 13:01Speaker 4: big part of this that doesn't get talked about as much.
- 13:03Speaker 3: They have public.
- 13:04Speaker 4: Funding for half the ball parker or so Portland I
- 13:08Speaker 4: think is close behind. I think they just don't quite
- 13:10Speaker 4: have all of those things. They don't have the keystone
- 13:12Speaker 4: investor there, and so I think Baseball MANJ League baseball
- 13:15Speaker 4: would work both places, but I think Salt Lake City
- 13:18Speaker 4: has to be considered the front runner at this point,
- 13:20Speaker 4: and in the East. I think that was maybe what
- 13:23Speaker 4: surprised people most from the reporting I did was that
- 13:26Speaker 4: Raleigh seems to be a much more realistic option than
- 13:29Speaker 4: they believed. And as I wrote, the reason they're realistic
- 13:33Speaker 4: is they have the money lined up. Tom Dundan, who
- 13:36Speaker 4: owns the Carolina Hurricanes and also just was part of
- 13:40Speaker 4: a group that's buying the Portland Trailblazers right now, he
- 13:44Speaker 4: wants to make it happen and bring baseball to North Carolina.
- 13:47Speaker 4: There is also support from in local politics and so
- 13:50Speaker 4: in some of the ways that Nashville has not been
- 13:52Speaker 4: so public, baseball players would love to have it in Nashville. Generally,
- 13:55Speaker 4: that's the city that wins running away when we ask
- 13:57Speaker 4: players in various polls about where they would like to
- 14:00Speaker 4: see an expansion franchise, Nashville is it. But they don't
- 14:03Speaker 4: have the money yet quite yet. They don't have public
- 14:06Speaker 4: funding quite yet, they don't have a stadium site quite yet,
- 14:09Speaker 4: so that all can still come together before baseball goes
- 14:12Speaker 4: public and ask for bids to come in.
- 14:14Speaker 3: But at this very.
- 14:14Speaker 4: Stage, I would pick Nashville because I think there's still
- 14:17Speaker 4: a lot of momentum there, but they have a lot
- 14:19Speaker 4: to figure out, which makes Raleigh a pretty intriguing number
- 14:22Speaker 4: two option in the same way that Portland's pretty intriguing
- 14:24Speaker 4: behind Salt Lake City.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Steven, before that, you wrote about your realignment plan. And
- 14:30Speaker 1: I know it's been a minute now that this has
- 14:32Speaker 1: been a topic of conversation, but it has been a
- 14:34Speaker 1: hot topic of conversation. So instead of asking you for
- 14:38Speaker 1: your whole plan, which we went over in a segment
- 14:40Speaker 1: on our show, how has it received?
- 14:42Speaker 2: What kind of feedback did you get?
- 14:44Speaker 1: And if you could go back and rewrite anything, would
- 14:47Speaker 1: you No.
- 14:49Speaker 4: I wouldn't change anything, and not because I'm unwilling to
- 14:52Speaker 4: do it. I just think it really worked. It really
- 14:54Speaker 4: made the map make more sense, and the feedback was
- 14:57Speaker 4: overwhelmingly positive. So Ken Rosenthal was texting that day with
- 15:01Speaker 4: just text he was getting from people around the league.
- 15:03Speaker 4: I said like, Hey, can we get your guys plan
- 15:06Speaker 4: to be the plan, which is I'm not taking that
- 15:09Speaker 4: much credit because Jason Stark literally wrote this exact same
- 15:11Speaker 4: thirty team alignment thirty two team alignment in twenty eighteen.
- 15:15Speaker 3: I didn't realize until after.
- 15:16Speaker 4: I've finished mine, So it's not like I'm the first
- 15:19Speaker 4: one to say any of this, But it's well received
- 15:21Speaker 4: because I took the NFL model and they re aligned
- 15:24Speaker 4: in two thousand and two the Broaden in Houston, Texans.
- 15:27Speaker 4: They were able to re align in a way where
- 15:29Speaker 4: so you know a handful of teams got pulled into
- 15:31Speaker 4: the new South divisions, but other than that, they didn't
- 15:34Speaker 4: really rock the boat that much. He didn't cause that
- 15:37Speaker 4: many ripples and waves. You know, one team here changed conferences,
- 15:42Speaker 4: a team here changed divisions. But really it was like,
- 15:44Speaker 4: how do we take the existing structure, take out those
- 15:47Speaker 4: teams that are going to head to the South divisions,
- 15:49Speaker 4: and try to make the map just like more common sense.
- 15:52Speaker 4: And there's some things that happened that don't make sense.
- 15:54Speaker 4: The Indianapolis Colts are in the South and the Miami
- 15:57Speaker 4: Dolphins are not. That type of thing will happen because
- 15:59Speaker 4: the Dolphin and said we don't want to go. So
- 16:01Speaker 4: baseball could have that very thing happen as well. But
- 16:03Speaker 4: right now, I said what's the easiest way we can
- 16:06Speaker 4: We can put the map together and try to limit
- 16:09Speaker 4: how many teams we have crossing the leagues, and you
- 16:12Speaker 4: come away with an option like, okay, that like that
- 16:15Speaker 4: that cluster of teams is together. We're keeping almost everybody
- 16:18Speaker 4: in the same leagues. I was switching, just the Rays
- 16:20Speaker 4: and the Rockies switching leagues. And I think people realizeeing that, like, oh,
- 16:25Speaker 4: realignment doesn't have to be earth shattering, it doesn't have.
- 16:28Speaker 3: To completely.
- 16:31Speaker 4: Turn over what I thought the leagues looked like. I
- 16:33Speaker 4: don't have to learn all that much new stuff. Where
- 16:36Speaker 4: the the alternative, as I'm sure you talked about the
- 16:39Speaker 4: other days alternatives, you rip up the American National League
- 16:41Speaker 4: and you say, we're just going geographically.
- 16:43Speaker 3: We're like the NBA.
- 16:44Speaker 4: We want the four or five teams closest to each
- 16:46Speaker 4: other to be in the same division, or the eight
- 16:48Speaker 4: teams close to each other be in the same division,
- 16:51Speaker 4: and you just split basically at the Mississippi. I personally
- 16:56Speaker 4: don't think that's the way they're going to go because
- 16:57Speaker 4: the American National Leagues are so established and there's so
- 17:00Speaker 4: there's so much history there. Baseball loves its history. It's
- 17:03Speaker 4: sacred in so many ways that would the owners really
- 17:06Speaker 4: vote just to you know, the example that the commissioner
- 17:10Speaker 4: gave when he was in the Little League Classical, it
- 17:11Speaker 4: was like, oh, that ten pm game in the playoffs,
- 17:13Speaker 4: we get like West Coast team and an East Coast
- 17:15Speaker 4: team and nobody's happy. It's like, would you really blow
- 17:18Speaker 4: up the American National leagues because of that.
- 17:19Speaker 3: Ten pm game?
- 17:20Speaker 4: I don't know exactly how much money is on that one,
- 17:22Speaker 4: but that would surprise me if that was the number
- 17:24Speaker 4: one motivating factor. And so I think they keep the
- 17:28Speaker 4: American National Leagues. And that was my proposal, was to
- 17:31Speaker 4: do that and make as few changes as possible, and
- 17:34Speaker 4: I think it really works.
- 17:36Speaker 2: Okay, well, good stuff.
- 17:37Speaker 1: Yeah, we will get into it more in the offseason too, Steven, thanks.
- 17:41Speaker 2: For stopping by. Man really appreciate the insight.
- 17:43Speaker 1: Everyone check out all the articles that he's been working
- 17:45Speaker 1: on in the Athletic Appreciate you.
- 17:49Speaker 3: Thanks guys.
- 17:51Speaker 2: Mark, what's up?
- 17:54Speaker 7: What's up? Scott? How are we doing?
- 17:56Speaker 3: Got lost his ear? So I want to know why
- 17:57Speaker 3: your Diraftneckmark, That's what I want to know.
- 18:00Speaker 8: So I know it's hard to believe, but I was
- 18:01Speaker 8: about fifty pounds lighter when I was in college when
- 18:03Speaker 8: I got started, and my neck looked a little bit
- 18:07Speaker 8: longer and thinner based on how much less weight I had.
- 18:11Speaker 8: I'm at a healthy spot right now. But before it
- 18:13Speaker 8: was kind of goofy looking.
- 18:14Speaker 2: You were fifty pounds lighter.
- 18:17Speaker 8: Yeah, no, fifty pounds lighter. It was kind of crazy
- 18:19Speaker 8: to think about.
- 18:21Speaker 2: Wow, what did you do?
- 18:23Speaker 3: Did you, Jim?
- 18:24Speaker 2: Did you go on the Aerocrat's diet plan? No?
- 18:28Speaker 8: Honestly, like just being healthier, I think not being in
- 18:32Speaker 8: college and eating the dorm food and you know, having
- 18:35Speaker 8: some late night activities.
- 18:36Speaker 7: I think it was. It was one of those situations.
- 18:39Speaker 2: There you go, all right, well you look good. How
- 18:41Speaker 2: do you feel right now?
- 18:43Speaker 1: As one of the hosts of Mets up about this
- 18:46Speaker 1: Mets team, like what is the current pulse of where
- 18:48Speaker 1: you're at? As of course, you know, the team heading
- 18:51Speaker 1: into the season had the highest of expectations. They carried
- 18:54Speaker 1: that for a while, they had the lulls, and now
- 18:56Speaker 1: with the youngsters coming up, are you back? Want to
- 19:00Speaker 1: say on the bandwagon, you watch every pitch, but where
- 19:02Speaker 1: are you at?
- 19:03Speaker 8: I go back and forth every single day with this team.
- 19:06Speaker 8: I can watch the games one day and be so
- 19:08Speaker 8: back in and then like a Mets fan, watch them
- 19:10Speaker 8: play one bad game or one bad series like they
- 19:13Speaker 8: did against the Marlins and think, well, I don't really
- 19:15Speaker 8: know how much noise we can make.
- 19:16Speaker 7: I don't know.
- 19:16Speaker 8: It's it's a bizarre team in that the young guys
- 19:19Speaker 8: being called up has made me really excited.
- 19:20Speaker 7: With Tong and McLean, I think they.
- 19:22Speaker 8: Were a little bit of a youthful spark that this
- 19:24Speaker 8: team needed, brought some energy, and they're some of the
- 19:26Speaker 8: best pitchers on this team right now. The offense is
- 19:29Speaker 8: finally clicking, but the pitching is really scaring me. With
- 19:32Speaker 8: Manaiah and Codei and even Peterson struggling a little bit,
- 19:35Speaker 8: those guys just simply need to better be better if
- 19:37Speaker 8: we want any chance at all at making her run.
- 19:40Speaker 6: All right, well, then let's I mean, let's dive into it.
- 19:44Speaker 6: I mean, you start with the most recent where Carlsmandoza said,
- 19:49Speaker 6: we're not really sure where we're going with Senga, Like,
- 19:52Speaker 6: do you believe that the route is blow up the rotation.
- 19:57Speaker 6: Have everybody go for a month of try and say,
- 20:01Speaker 6: whoever does the best in the next month is our guys?
- 20:04Speaker 6: Do we trust. Do we trust anything besides David Peterson
- 20:08Speaker 6: and the rookies. You gotta start start with Sega. Do
- 20:11Speaker 6: you agree with Carlos Mendoza?
- 20:13Speaker 8: I do, Actually, I think right now, with what we've
- 20:15Speaker 8: seen from Sanga, it's pretty tough to rely on him
- 20:18Speaker 8: to be a game two, game three starter in the playoffs,
- 20:21Speaker 8: and we know that he's had some up and downs
- 20:24Speaker 8: with injuries. He's had a bit of a weird couple
- 20:26Speaker 8: seasons with the Mets with you know, missing time. But
- 20:28Speaker 8: at this moment, right now, with how funky and kind
- 20:32Speaker 8: of hyper specific, code I seems to feel within tune
- 20:35Speaker 8: to his body. He's talked about it after the game.
- 20:37Speaker 8: He's like, I'm working extra hard to make sure my
- 20:39Speaker 8: body's working right. It doesn't seem like everything is going
- 20:42Speaker 8: properly for code I Senga this year, and if he's
- 20:45Speaker 8: not one of the three best pitchers, especially because the
- 20:47Speaker 8: Mets look like they're gonna be playing in the wild
- 20:49Speaker 8: Card Series no matter what, I don't think you can
- 20:51Speaker 8: confidently throw him out there in a game that has
- 20:54Speaker 8: so much importance until he shows you something. And luckily,
- 20:56Speaker 8: the Mets do still have a month left and we
- 20:59Speaker 8: have a little bit of a cushion. We still have
- 21:00Speaker 8: the Reds, you know, at the end of the week here,
- 21:02Speaker 8: which could change things. But if CODEI steps up, I
- 21:05Speaker 8: have no problem putting him back in that you know,
- 21:08Speaker 8: game two, game three role, But at this exact moment,
- 21:11Speaker 8: I don't really trust him to get big outs in
- 21:13Speaker 8: the series right now.
- 21:15Speaker 3: Well, the Mets trusting him last year against the Phillies.
- 21:17Speaker 3: They ran him out there and pitched all year.
- 21:19Speaker 7: Yeah, no, I don't choice.
- 21:22Speaker 5: Now did you ever think that the big bad Mets,
- 21:26Speaker 5: with their seven hundred million dollar payroll, we need to
- 21:28Speaker 5: rookies to step in and save them. They were supposed to,
- 21:30Speaker 5: you know, Frankie mont Toss and this guy and that
- 21:33Speaker 5: guy and all these people they signed, and then it's
- 21:35Speaker 5: McLean and Tang and I came up and to save him.
- 21:39Speaker 8: Listen, I'd still rather have the seven hundred million dollar
- 21:41Speaker 8: payroll and still make the playoffs than have that disappointing
- 21:43Speaker 8: season like the Braves did this year and look.
- 21:45Speaker 7: So horrible, like at least we're still there. So it's
- 21:48Speaker 7: one of those things where it's like.
- 21:49Speaker 5: I'm a White Sox fan, Mark, Okay, So let's just
- 21:51Speaker 5: say there's no disappointment.
- 21:52Speaker 3: They're having a way better than they did last year.
- 21:55Speaker 8: Actually they've got some home players Coles to Montgomery, but no, seriously,
- 21:58Speaker 8: like the uh. I didn't expect the young guys to
- 22:01Speaker 8: have this much importance, and I don't particularly like it.
- 22:04Speaker 8: I'm glad that McLean has stepped up and shown that
- 22:06Speaker 8: he's able to pitch in big moments and be one
- 22:09Speaker 8: of our better pitchers. And I'm glad that we saw
- 22:11Speaker 8: Tom come up and he looked pretty good against the Marlins,
- 22:14Speaker 8: the only win we got against him in that series somehow,
- 22:16Speaker 8: but I wish that the pitching was a little bit better.
- 22:20Speaker 8: Just the fact that Manaia and Sanga, like you mentioned,
- 22:22Speaker 8: being the guys that are supposed to be the frontline starters,
- 22:25Speaker 8: and even looking at Mantas who was supposed to be
- 22:27Speaker 8: a big part of this rotation, the fact that we've
- 22:28Speaker 8: gotten almost nothing out of them. And I'm code I
- 22:32Speaker 8: a little bit more than Manaya, but the fact that
- 22:34Speaker 8: right now we're kind of getting nothing out of them
- 22:35Speaker 8: is terrifying as a Mets fan, something I do not
- 22:38Speaker 8: feel comfortable with at all.
- 22:41Speaker 1: Okay, KP, this is your first arena club experience. We're
- 22:43Speaker 1: gonna open a slab pack together. So first off, we're
- 22:46Speaker 1: gonna buy one of those twenty five dollars slab packs
- 22:48Speaker 1: and we get to see what is in the pack.
- 22:51Speaker 2: There.
- 22:51Speaker 1: It is the Grail, which is the best card in
- 22:53Speaker 1: the pack and worth the most. There are some other
- 22:56Speaker 1: cards that we're chasing, and you can see the entire
- 22:58Speaker 1: lineup so that you know what you're in the running for.
- 23:01Speaker 1: There's the Yamamoto signed card. Now let's open up our
- 23:05Speaker 1: pack and see how we do. We have ourselves a
- 23:10Speaker 1: really cool graphic and then a show Heyo Tani fifty
- 23:16Speaker 1: to fifty card from last year. What do you want
- 23:18Speaker 1: to do? Should we sell it right back to them
- 23:20Speaker 1: for sixteen or should.
- 23:21Speaker 2: We keep it?
- 23:23Speaker 3: You should give it to me, I'll.
- 23:24Speaker 1: Keep good answer, fine, I will give it to you.
- 23:27Speaker 1: Since the Blue Jays didn't getto Tani, you can get
- 23:30Speaker 1: this fifty to fifty card instead and use the code
- 23:32Speaker 1: foul foul to get yourself twenty percent off your first
- 23:35Speaker 1: slab pack or card purchase. Yes, you get to keep
- 23:38Speaker 1: that card if you want it. They send it to
- 23:39Speaker 1: you foul at Arena club dot com.
- 23:42Speaker 2: Slash foul.
- 23:43Speaker 3: Set it out there.
- 23:44Speaker 6: You brought up the game game three starter for the
- 23:47Speaker 6: playoffs today, nothing changes. Everybody just kind of middles their
- 23:52Speaker 6: way through. Soto has one hundred RBIs in the month
- 23:55Speaker 6: of September and the Mets make the playoffs. Tell me
- 23:58Speaker 6: your game one, two, and three star.
- 24:00Speaker 8: I think right now it's got to be Peterson game one.
- 24:03Speaker 8: I think game two would be Noel McLain, and then
- 24:05Speaker 8: I think you just go all hands on deck, like,
- 24:07Speaker 8: can we get one time around the order from Sean Andya?
- 24:10Speaker 8: Can we go Jonah Tonk one time around the order?
- 24:12Speaker 3: Like?
- 24:13Speaker 8: We do have the option because of how the playoff
- 24:15Speaker 8: format is, where if we were to get to a
- 24:17Speaker 8: game three, everybody has to be available, and the way
- 24:20Speaker 8: that managers handle the postseason typically they do go kind
- 24:24Speaker 8: of a little bit crazy, and if you start to
- 24:26Speaker 8: struggle at all, you come out of the game. The
- 24:28Speaker 8: Mets will have a lot of arms. If Peterson McClain
- 24:30Speaker 8: continue to do what they can do, obviously you know
- 24:33Speaker 8: you're gonna use some bullpen two in those games. Things
- 24:35Speaker 8: would change, But game three I would be leaning crazy enough.
- 24:38Speaker 8: I think Tong based on what we've seen right now,
- 24:40Speaker 8: I feel more confident with him than I do Mania
- 24:42Speaker 8: or Sanger right now.
- 24:44Speaker 3: Okay, so essentially you're looking for about eighteen innings in
- 24:49Speaker 3: three games from your bullpen, and we haven't even brought
- 24:52Speaker 3: up your bullpen.
- 24:54Speaker 8: Well we you know's That's another scary thing that's going
- 24:57Speaker 8: on here, is that a lot of the guys that
- 24:58Speaker 8: we brought in, specifically Ryan Helsley, have been just really
- 25:02Speaker 8: struggling to get any sort outs, especially in big moments.
- 25:05Speaker 8: Tyler Rodgers been good, but he is still giving up runs,
- 25:07Speaker 8: whether it's donky hits or bloops or anything like that,
- 25:10Speaker 8: still runs that are scoring. Like there just hasn't been
- 25:12Speaker 8: anybody that can get consistent out in this bullpen that's
- 25:15Speaker 8: not named Edwin Diazer Brooks Raley.
- 25:17Speaker 2: Right now, all right, let's move to SODO.
- 25:22Speaker 1: Thirty six home runs, had a career high six RBIs
- 25:26Speaker 1: in that big win over the Tigers yesterday.
- 25:29Speaker 2: He's a stolen base machine these days.
- 25:31Speaker 1: That number is already a career high from him at
- 25:34Speaker 1: what is it twenty six, and even for the Homers
- 25:37Speaker 1: it's a tougher park day at Homers in and he's
- 25:40Speaker 1: at thirty six. His career high was last year at
- 25:42Speaker 1: forty one. When you look at his first season as
- 25:46Speaker 1: a New York Met How would you sum up his
- 25:48Speaker 1: performance and contributions to the team. Should Mets fans be thrilled?
- 25:53Speaker 7: Mets fans should be thrilled.
- 25:54Speaker 8: I think he's never going to be able to live
- 25:56Speaker 8: up to the seven hundred million dollar contract.
- 25:58Speaker 7: It's impossible as a baseball player show Heo.
- 26:00Speaker 8: Tani, who can literally pitch and hit and do things
- 26:02Speaker 8: that we've never seen before. But for Soto, offensively, he
- 26:06Speaker 8: is basically the same guy that he's always been. He's
- 26:08Speaker 8: having one of his best seasons offensively. If you look
- 26:10Speaker 8: at all the numbers around baseball, he's top six I
- 26:14Speaker 8: think in WRC plus in terms of run production, even
- 26:17Speaker 8: if you're looking at war for a guy who's horrible
- 26:19Speaker 8: and right field defensively, he's still top fifteen in the league.
- 26:22Speaker 8: And what he's been able to do this past month
- 26:24Speaker 8: and going into September now really helping carrying this offense
- 26:28Speaker 8: is exactly what we paid him for. He's on pace
- 26:31Speaker 8: to maybe even have a forty one hundred and thirty
- 26:33Speaker 8: sole in base season. Like we don't see that kind
- 26:35Speaker 8: of stuff from players very often. I think Bonds and
- 26:38Speaker 8: Griffy are the only guys to have those kind of numbers. So, yeah,
- 26:41Speaker 8: Wan Soto has been one of the most valuable players
- 26:43Speaker 8: I think in baseball this year. If you take him
- 26:45Speaker 8: off the Mets, this team doesn't even sniff the playoffs
- 26:47Speaker 8: at all.
- 26:49Speaker 6: Who's next? Who's the next guy? Who's the next most
- 26:52Speaker 6: valuable because I don't think I think it's a distant
- 26:54Speaker 6: second place. But who do you feel like is the
- 26:57Speaker 6: second most valuable player in this offense? And that's indispensable
- 27:02Speaker 6: the stretch run here.
- 27:03Speaker 8: Yeah, offensively, I think it's Peter Alonzo, as much as
- 27:06Speaker 8: I think Lindor is probably a more valuable player overall,
- 27:09Speaker 8: I think offensively, Pete Alonzo is the next most valuable guy.
- 27:12Speaker 8: Just I mean, even the numbers he's putting up this
- 27:14Speaker 8: year still really good, A top twenty offensive player in
- 27:17Speaker 8: the league. The powers incredible as it always is, one
- 27:20Speaker 8: of the best home run hitters in the game. And
- 27:21Speaker 8: when he's not chasing, which he goes through spouts where
- 27:24Speaker 8: he does chase a lot and he looks to hit
- 27:27Speaker 8: the ball the other way a little bit too often.
- 27:28Speaker 8: When Pete's on, he's a tough out, a tough at bat,
- 27:32Speaker 8: and with Soto in front, of him and Lindor in
- 27:33Speaker 8: front of him. There's always guys on base, which is
- 27:36Speaker 8: what you love to see.
- 27:36Speaker 2: If you're Pete Alonzo, Mark good stuff man. Great to
- 27:41Speaker 2: have you on.
- 27:41Speaker 3: Oh no, no, no, no, we ain't done with him yet.
- 27:44Speaker 3: We ain't done with him yet.
- 27:45Speaker 2: I said final call, final.
- 27:47Speaker 3: You didn't say final call.
- 27:48Speaker 5: You said next And I didn't get the answer because
- 27:50Speaker 5: you said, whoa, whoa, Let's let him go. You got
- 27:52Speaker 5: a helmet behind you. Okay, we know you love the Cocks.
- 27:56Speaker 5: Buzz is Lenora's Sellers a real Heisman candidate? Because I
- 28:02Speaker 5: watch your game against Virginia Tech. I mean, eh, And
- 28:06Speaker 5: are you sold on Shane Beemer?
- 28:09Speaker 7: Oh? I love I love Beamer. I love Beamer. Of
- 28:11Speaker 7: course I have to love Beemer.
- 28:13Speaker 8: You don't understand. I got to South Carolina twenty fourteen.
- 28:17Speaker 8: From that moment on, they were horrendous. They never even
- 28:20Speaker 8: came close to being good again. So this is the
- 28:22Speaker 8: first time in over ten years that they've like sniffed
- 28:25Speaker 8: really being a good prominent college football team. Big reason
- 28:28Speaker 8: Beemer in a big reason is because Leonora Sellers, who
- 28:30Speaker 8: I do think is a legitimate Heisman candidate. I don't
- 28:32Speaker 8: think they wanted to show their hand too much against
- 28:34Speaker 8: Virginia Tech. They ran that deep ball to Nick Harbor
- 28:37Speaker 8: late in the game, easy touchdown.
- 28:38Speaker 7: That's all we need to see.
- 28:40Speaker 3: Wow, good.
- 28:43Speaker 2: I can't say anything.
- 28:45Speaker 5: You really you literally can compete for the SEC this year.
- 28:48Speaker 5: I mean Alabama look like dog poo.
- 28:51Speaker 7: That helps. That helps a lot.
- 28:52Speaker 5: Do you think Georgia, Tennessee, the rest of them, LSU, Florida,
- 28:57Speaker 5: do you think they're better and can get to the
- 28:59Speaker 5: SEC championship game.
- 29:01Speaker 8: I think we have a chance. I don't think we're
- 29:02Speaker 8: the best team in the SEC. But when you look
- 29:04Speaker 8: at like the most impactful players offensively and defensively, I
