- 0:09Brandan: Welcome to the Sea Hawkers Podcast.
- 0:12I'm your host, Brandan Schulze, and tonight I am joined by my good buddy, Phil
- 0:17Lydick, as we are recapping and reacting to episode five, the finale of Hard
- 0:24Knocks for our 2026 Seahawks pre-season.
- 0:28Phil?
- 0:29Phil: Yes.
- 0:30I enjoyed it a lot.
- 0:31Maybe my favorite.
- 0:32Ooh… I think my, the last one was the least enjoyable for me.
- 0:36I tend to not cry on sadness, just-… I get bummed a little bit.
- 0:41Uh-huh.
- 0:41There was some, there was some happiness in this one, got me crying a little bit.
- 0:44You know, there, there, it was a, it was a blessed episode overall.
- 0:48I think we got- Yeah… and we got some insight we'll get to as well.
- 0:50There's some insight and some blessed moments.
- 0:53Brandan: Well, I think the, the big thing that everyone was looking forward to
- 0:57maybe the most intriguing aspect of it, was going to be the, the cut down from
- 1:03the 90-man roster to the 53-man roster, or the 70-man, Yeah… roster
- 1:09if you include the ready squad.
- 1:11Yeah.
- 1:11And, a- and so that was, going into it, I- I've seen how, some
- 1:18teams handle it based on past seasons, and so h- how our Seahawks would show
- 1:24out in that part of it was probably what I was most interested in in
- 1:29this episode, and I, I walked away a little bit disappointed, Phil- Oh
- 1:34because I- Way disappointed… I was disappointed because there were a couple
- 1:39guys who didn't make the team and then didn't end up on the practice squad
- 1:44because they went to other teams- Oh
- 1:47Phil: yeah
- 1:47… Brandan: that I, I, I was hoping to, to just get a little bit
- 1:51more, and we didn't get anything.
- 1:54Phil: You got a little something from Uso, though, toward the end.
- 1:56Like, his happiness to make the ready squad, you could tell.
- 1:59He was pleased that he was climbing his way up.
- 2:02I, I don't think- Yeah… he was sure he was gonna get
- 2:03that offer that they gave him
- 2:06Brandan: Marlin85 in chat saying, "I like the Diggs part.
- 2:09Now I get why he didn't make the 53."
- 2:12Yeah.
- 2:12Yeah, we, we got a little bit of insight there.
- 2:14We've got Ryan911, our live executive producer, with a 49.99
- 2:21Super Chat.
- 2:22Hey.
- 2:22That whole series was an awesome appetizer to finish the off-season.
- 2:27Now bring on game one.
- 2:29Phil: Yes.
- 2:29Brandan: Yes.
- 2:30we, we can't wait for game one, and, y- you talked about this being
- 2:35one of your favorite episodes, Phil.
- 2:37Besides maybe the, the musical introduction, and I saw Lisa in the
- 2:42chat talking about how, y- I need that coordinated song, from
- 2:46the first bit to bump in my car.
- 2:48Yeah.
- 2:49That, that part was excellent.
- 2:50Did that play into why this was your favorite episode?
- 2:53Phil: Okay.
- 2:53So I was watching on my iPad, the large one, and I used my spatial audio
- 2:59noise-canceling AirPods, and it was amazing the way they bumped that sound
- 3:03together and some of the coach phrases echoing in there, and then the diff-
- 3:07just the different sounds of camp that they sort of turned into a musical.
- 3:14I know, I know Clinton's away doing music himself right now, but
- 3:17we got to enjoy some good music with that, as well as the pumpkins
- 3:21in and out of a, of the game.
- 3:23we got some Dolly.
- 3:24That made me tear up just a little bit.
- 3:25The Dolly was good.
- 3:26W-
- 3:26Brandan: when you talk about getting teared up, Phil- Yes… I, I
- 3:28think that was the, the emotion, the bit that got me, was the
- 3:32boarding the airplane and the- 9 to
- 3:33Phil: 5
- 3:34Brandan: the Dolly Parton, 9 to 5 song in the background.
- 3:38Phil: And then Soundgarden Dusty.
- 3:39Gotta go back to a Seattle song at the end there.
- 3:41Yeah.
- 3:42Brandan: I, I didn't…
- 3:43I, I liked the, so while we're critiquing the musical portion of
- 3:48this, I, I like the s- Smashing Pumpkins going into the game.
- 3:55I, I didn't like it coming out of the game- Oh
- 3:57'cause it, I, I…
- 3:58It just-
- 3:58Phil: Wasted a chance for another song, didn't it?
- 4:00Brandan: It, well, not so much that.
- 4:02It just- I don't think the, the emotions of that song fit
- 4:06with- Oh… There wasn't a
- 4:08Phil: rat in a cage at that point
- 4:09Brandan: yeah… yeah, right.
- 4:10That's, that's just, it felt off to me.
- 4:12Phil: I was feeling like you on a lot of the other episodes, where I'm
- 4:15like, "They coulda done this better."
- 4:17Like, they end, they, they didn't hit Given to Fly at the peak point
- 4:20of the song by having us do something awesome in the air, like a JSN
- 4:25catch or, you know, there's a few…
- 4:26I've been having production issues, so I feel where you're coming from with this
- 4:29Brandan, where I've been a little bit
- 4:31Brandan: picky on- It's, it's very nitpicky though.
- 4:32Yes.
- 4:32I, I feel it, it was great overall because, it, if we
- 4:38had only had preseason games- to get us through this preseason.
- 4:44Ugh.
- 4:44I, it w- it would've been totally different.
- 4:46So this- Yes… We're blessed… this was a little bit
- 4:49more entertaining, I think, to have this along with the preseason.
- 4:54we got Brian Kennicott in chat when John's reaction to Cody not
- 4:58being aggressive and high pointing the ball, that matched my frustration.
- 5:02You know, Co- Go get it, Cody.
- 5:04Go get it Go get it, Cody.
- 5:06And then he ends up not making the roster, but we don't even really get to see…
- 5:10I mean, that was the, the one bit of Cody, that I, I think that
- 5:15that's all we got through this.
- 5:17Yeah.
- 5:17And I, I thought it was interesting because the, the way that this kicked off
- 5:20Phil, w- we had Uso Seumalo to start and I thought it was similar to the Jake Bobo
- 5:27bit, setting us up to be a little bit more emotional in a, in a sad way, right?
- 5:32But they did.
- 5:32Because him not making the 53.
- 5:34Yeah.
- 5:34And, you know, it, because he was, they were asking him, "What do
- 5:38you need to do to make the team?"
- 5:40Yeah.
- 5:40And, you know, him trying to work through that answer and, Marlon85 saying
- 5:46the, hot, Hard Knocks didn't expect Uso and Foster making the team.
- 5:51I, I think that it maybe changed their approach though of how they
- 5:58they considered making the team based on how John Schneider and, and Mike
- 6:03McDonald consider making the team because at the end, yeah, it started
- 6:07out with Uso, i- i- setting you up maybe for some disappointment- Yeah
- 6:11but at the end it was hyping him up like, "Hey, you, you know, you're part of this."
- 6:15Yeah.
- 6:15"And yeah, you're not on the 53, but you're part of the 70."
- 6:18Phil: And they didn't even, you're not on the 53.
- 6:19It's like he made it.
- 6:21He made it to the next step.
- 6:22The, it was, they did show some guys maybe we'll get you back.
- 6:25They had some of those sad-ish conversations we like- And
- 6:28Brandan: the only one I saw was the one running back, Oh
- 6:31that they had
- 6:32Phil: in the office And he was real positive.
- 6:33Yeah.
- 6:33Brandan: Yeah.
- 6:34Phil: There was some other guys.
- 6:35There's a few other guys.
- 6:36One guy was really bummed.
- 6:37It was, I think it was our rookie receiver maybe.
- 6:41Brandan: Oh yeah, Ricky White.
- 6:42y- He w- wasn't it Ricky White- No, no… that, he, 'cause he was talking
- 6:47about how he wanted to be here in Seattle?
- 6:49Phil: Yeah, no he, and I think he plans to come back.
- 6:52It was
- 6:53' Brandan: Cause he made the-… maybe someone-… the fif- or he made
- 6:54the- Yeah… the greatest squad
- 6:54… Phil: maybe someone in chat.
- 6:56It's that-
- 6:56Brandan: Okay
- 6:57… Phil: 84, right?
- 6:58No, 8-.
- 6:59Brandan: Hmm.
- 7:00Henderson?
- 7:01Phil: Was it Henderson?
- 7:03I think it was 80- Wasn't Henderson 84?
- 7:03He was sitting there and how you feeling?
- 7:04Oh man, he was, he was pretty down knowing he was bringing the playbook in.
- 7:08Yeah.
- 7:09And I think, and then Uso you're right, when they said the, they either
- 7:12were asking him specifically what do you gotta do to earn a roster spot?
- 7:16And he's going through all that- And then you're thinking they're gonna
- 7:19show just a bummed out moment, 'cause we all know he's missed the 53.
- 7:23But it was like he was so relieved.
- 7:25'Cause I think for him, he knew making the 53 wasn't really where…
- 7:30I think he was self enough, aware enough to know that's not where he was at.
- 7:34Yeah.
- 7:34Him getting on the 70, that was his accomplishment.
- 7:38And, I know that as a coach when we have different teams and who gets varsity
- 7:42and who gets JV and how all that goes, and people are kind of slotting themselves
- 7:46where they're on the border, and just kind of the body language, "I made it to what
- 7:50my goal was, to what I had a chance at."
- 7:52And there was just a feeling of relief, I think, for Moso, Uso, that it's not over.
- 7:56His journey continues.
- 7:58Brandan: Yeah.
- 7:59Yeah, so that was cool.
- 8:00we got to see the, them ha- br- bringing in a TikTok influencer
- 8:05to make some fried chicken.
- 8:07We got to see- Yeah… Dino's pub.
- 8:08How hungry were you after watching the fried chicken bit?
- 8:11Phil: Well, I had dinner right before.
- 8:13Okay.
- 8:13And I didn't know if it was gluten-free, so I didn't know if
- 8:15it was gonna make me sick-… even though it would be very tasty.
- 8:18But I'm guessing it was tasty, but thankfully I'd, I'd just
- 8:21eaten right before I watched it.
- 8:23Brandan: Yeah.
- 8:24If, if Derek Hall, isn't a- any indication that the
- 8:28that was some good chicken.
- 8:29Phil: Okay.
- 8:29Here's something that I had for you, Brandan.
- 8:31Brandan: Yeah.
- 8:32Phil: This is the fifth episode.
- 8:34Did you get the feeling on this one that the players are kind of looking
- 8:39for the camera a little bit more by now?
- 8:40They're kind of comfortable and used to it?
- 8:42I had a little bit of a we're-watching-The-Office
- 8:45moment here and there.
- 8:46Even the setting with the three, with John and his two other- guys
- 8:52from the GM room talking about the players, "These are good guys."
- 8:55And it's almost like- Oh, yeah… it's almost like the c- camera is
- 8:57the fourth person at the table.
- 8:59They're talking to each other, and they're looking over at the camera, and
- 9:02there was some of those FaceTime moments.
- 9:04I, I felt like people were playing to it just a little bit more a-
- 9:08as we, as the season went along.
- 9:10Brandan: Yeah, I could see that a little bit.
- 9:12Yeah, I think that was John Schneider with m- I think it was Mo Kelly-
- 9:16Yeah… and Ivan, oh, I don't have Ivan's last name on the tip of my tongue.
- 9:21But, because that was going to be, I think, the group.
- 9:24'Cause y- you saw a little bit how they did it where Mo Kelly was in a
- 9:28room with a guy, kind of telling him about what the team wanted from him
- 9:31and then they would go in and, you know, talk to the coach, and then maybe
- 9:35they would end up with John Schneider.
- 9:37It didn't take you through all of them, but you, you saw, like
- 9:39different little components of guys meeting with, different portions.
- 9:44And it, and it looked to me like they would cycle through and
- 9:48you know, have, have the meeting of what's happening, and then
- 9:51you go into the meeting to kind of, yeah, close it out.
- 9:55And I'm laughing because the snail in, in Chad saying Ivan Drago.
- 9:59No, I- But, but I don't think, I don't think that's Ivan's last name.
- 10:03Not the, not the Russian from Rocky, from Rocky IV.
- 10:08Phil: And then I saw, and as far as some things about the season, I
- 10:11saw Price with the-- They were doing ones versus ones, and then Coach
- 10:14Mike called up, "Now for the twos," and the twos went against the twos.
- 10:16Yeah.
- 10:17I saw Price over and over in there with the ones, so I've got kind of- Ooh
- 10:21good confidence.
- 10:22E- especially Price ended up on my fantasy team, which I'm
- 10:24sure everybody cares about.
- 10:25But-… I think a fantasy tip out there is Price is playing with the ones.
- 10:30I think he's gonna be, getting quite a few touches.
- 10:33Brandan: Yeah.
- 10:34Well, and the fact that they ended up protecting him and not putting him out
- 10:37there in any of the preseason games, it, it does feel like an indication.
- 10:42o- the other takeaway that I had in my notes, though, from the bar
- 10:47with Mo Kelly and John Schneider was the, the comment of no jerks this year.
- 10:52Phil: Oh, yeah.
- 10:53Right?
- 10:54This year.
- 10:55I wonder who the last year jerk was.
- 10:57Brandan: Yeah.
- 10:58Phil: I, I, I, I don't know.
- 11:00But I, I- Was Cooper Kupp kind of a subtle co-star to some of this whole season?
- 11:05And then he's even, like, leading a room, and he's even the guy on the sideline
- 11:09during the game who's cracking back at Coach Mike on, like, disagreeing with him
- 11:15and putting him in place a little bit.
- 11:16He, he's kind of, got a lot of confidence in what he's allowed to
- 11:21be a part of and say at this point.
- 11:23Brandan: Yeah.
- 11:24It's, it's been interesting to watch the way that they've
- 11:28they've gotten him involved.
- 11:29It's also…
- 11:30E- every time I see his, his, wardrobe- Sure, yeah… I'm
- 11:35always, amazed that a person would, wear a shirt that way.
- 11:41Phil: I think he just wants everybody to know how sleek and fit he is, I guess.
- 11:43I…
- 11:44It, it, it hearkens back to, like, the '80s.
- 11:46Like, when I was a little boy in the '80s, the teenagers, the big
- 11:50guys wore those all the time.
- 11:51Yeah.
- 11:52Like, I'd go try to hang on the basketball court with the older guys.
- 11:54They're all wearing those shirts, and I'm like, "I couldn't
- 11:57possibly wear that thing."
- 11:58I-
- 11:58Brandan: it's not enough to wear, like, one of those, what are they called?
- 12:01A, A-neck, T-shirts.
- 12:05No, it has to be…
- 12:06Like, there, there has to be armpit goes completely down almost to the waist.
- 12:10Phil: It's like white men can't jump, and they're, you know.
- 12:12Brandan: Yes.
- 12:14Very white men can't jump.
- 12:16Yeah.
- 12:16Wow.
- 12:17n- next up, we, we got to hear some of the Nick Emmanwori progress, so.
- 12:21Phil: Yes.
- 12:22That was another reveal, and it wasn't totally positive.
- 12:26Right, Brandan?
- 12:29Brandan: It, it wasn't real… Well, 'cause I don't know.
- 12:32You, you got some positivity.
- 12:35I felt like in the past couple days we've gotten some more positivity- Yeah
- 12:38… just based on the feeling where out where Nick Emmanwori is in his recovery.
- 12:45And I guess you have to remember too that this goes back before
- 12:50maybe some of those parts, so him talking about some of the soreness
- 12:55that he's trying to deal with and-
- 12:57Phil: And Mike's like, "Soreness is good, right?"
- 12:59Right.
- 13:00He's, like, hoping, wish casting.
- 13:02You get the feeling just how important he is to Mike, and
- 13:05they really want him to be ready.
- 13:07But from Nick, it sounds pretty day to day.
- 13:10Like, he's uncertain.
- 13:11He wants to be where everybody wants him to be, but he really is uncertain, right?
- 13:17Brandan: It seems that way.
- 13:18Phil: Yeah.
- 13:19Brandan: And but they also, they, they did the thing of showing where
- 13:25he was at the beginning of- Yeah
- 13:29Hard Knocks.
- 13:29He was in an, in a cast and riding around on a scooter, and here he is at-
- 13:36Phil: Yeah
- 13:36… Brandan: just a few weeks later out there running full speed and
- 13:41talking about how, you know, he's close but, but maybe not quite ready.
- 13:46And-
- 13:46Phil: Mm-hmm… with- I wouldn't disagree.
- 13:48He's come a long way.
- 13:49I'm just-
- 13:50Brandan: Right.
- 13:50And so with 10 days left, I, I mean, I'm not holding out hope, Phil.
- 13:55Phil: You're, you're not holding out hope, or you're not-
- 13:57Brandan: Or I am holding out hope.
- 13:59Phil: Yeah.
- 13:59I'm not
- 13:59Brandan: I'm
- 13:59Phil: not-
- 13:59Brandan: You're, you're
- 13:59Phil: not discounting the chance.
- 14:01Yeah.
- 14:01You're saying there's a chance.
- 14:02Brandan: I'm, I'm thinking there's a chance because he
- 14:06the dude has come a long way.
- 14:07And- Right… Mike wants him to be out there.
- 14:10It sounds like he wants to be out there, but also it does show you too that- Mike
- 14:17doesn't seem like a guy who, despite how much he does want him out there, he
- 14:23he's not a coach who's pushing him to be out there unless he truly is ready.
- 14:28Phil: I think that's true.
- 14:29I think Mike might be a little more willing than Pete, but I'm not sure.
- 14:32I, I feel like Mike s- wants him to believe in feeling better and
- 14:36so, Mike doesn't tell us as much, obviously, a- as Pete.
- 14:41We kinda got the sense for Pete, you know, if it was legit or not.
- 14:44But-
- 14:45Brandan: Mm-hmm
- 14:45… Phil: Mike keeps it to himself some.
- 14:48But I do, I got the feeling like he's been different times saying
- 14:52"We really need him to play.
- 14:53We're hoping he can play."
- 14:54And even like I think he wants Emmanwori to believe that he can play.
- 14:58So yeah, I don't think he's gonna endanger him, but maybe his concern is
- 15:03that Nick won't know when he's ready or, Nick will be too careful.
- 15:07So I got that s- I got that side of it a little bit maybe when he's
- 15:11like, "Oh, soreness is a good thing.
- 15:12I've got leg soreness.
- 15:13You got that soreness," right?
- 15:16Brandan: Well, that's, i- that's probably just that athlete mentality, right?
- 15:20Trying to, put him in that space.
- 15:22But, one other question I came away with, Phil, watching this episode, is
- 15:29Jake Peetz our offensive coordinator?
- 15:32Phil: okay, so I like Jake Peetz in this one.
- 15:34He's pretty classy.
- 15:35Yeah.
- 15:35Brandan: He was a big part of it.
- 15:36Any time they focused on the offense it was Jake Peetz.
- 15:39Phil: Yeah.
- 15:39I'm almost convinced, I'm almost convinced that our offensive coordinator has either
- 15:44by himself or the team just been protected 'cause maybe everything that he's doing
- 15:49everything Fleury's doing is top secret.
- 15:51Like, you only get to see him sitting there, so he's designing the, the
- 15:55game and maybe his concern is, "I'll slip up and give something away
- 15:58that's a tip-off," and that's like the one thing that they can't allow.
- 16:03Or he's just like, "I wanna get used to the team.
- 16:05I wanna get used to knowing the guys.
- 16:07I don't need that distraction.
- 16:08Can you please keep that away?"
- 16:10And they're like, "Okay, we're putting him off the table."
- 16:12I didn't see Jake Peetz calling plays, but I love the stuff he was- No
- 16:16Brandan: but he was working with Milroe.
- 16:17Phil: Yeah.
- 16:18Brandan: Talking about facing the Chiefs once and- Yeah… working
- 16:22through that part leading into the game.
- 16:23You saw him on the sidelines with Milroe after after Jalen blows up and is-
- 16:30Phil: Yeah
- 16:30Brandan: that was good
- 16:31getting frustrated during the game.
- 16:33Phil: That was good.
- 16:34I could relate to that a little bit.
- 16:35I got…
- 16:35I'm, that was a little Geno-ish, how he just went off and Peetz had
- 16:39to go over and say, "Yeah, okay.
- 16:40They needed to see you mad.
- 16:41That kind of makes sense, but now…"
- 16:43He's giving him some leader tips.
- 16:45"Now you gotta, you know, bring it down."
- 16:47And he's…
- 16:48I, I like that.
- 16:49I, I liked a lot about Peetz.
- 16:50It wasn't play calling to me, but it was- No… real quarterback coaching.
- 16:54It was real mentality coaching.
- 16:56Kind of reminding the quarterback that you're the leader on the field, so you're
- 17:00gonna set the attitude as to how the team is gonna go into the next play.
- 17:05You can't just lose it when it's time to get back out there.
- 17:09Right there, that was okay.
- 17:10Everybody take this serious.
- 17:12When you're out there, though, you need to have the right
- 17:14kind of mentality as a leader.
- 17:15I like that.
- 17:16Brandan: Yeah.
- 17:16My, my main point is when it came to offense- Yeah… the guy who we've seen
- 17:20have the most camera time, that looked the most offensive coordinator-ish, has
- 17:25been Peetz because, the other guys have been in, within their own rooms.
- 17:29Receiver coach.
- 17:30You know, the running back room- Yeah… receiver room.
- 17:31but, but we actually got sideline time with the offense, and it, it was only
- 17:36with Peetz, not with, Brian Fleury, who is our true offensive coordinator.
- 17:41Whistle Jacket in chat, Lisa, saying, "If there is one regret for me, I would
- 17:45have loved to see more Adin Durty."
- 17:46I agree.
- 17:46I, I think that would've been good too.
- 17:48But I was also worried, Lisa, that when we got to see Adin Durty early
- 17:53on in, I, I think it was episode one or two, I was like, "Oh, no, no, no.
- 17:57I've seen enough."
- 17:58"I don't want other people to see this too, and then poach
- 18:01him from us come next season."
- 18:02Phil: Yes, 'cause that's kind of where they're gonna get their ideas of
- 18:05they're just looking for anything of who to look for when they get sick of
- 18:08their coach halfway through the season.
- 18:09So his name would come in, especially with his cool accent and- Uh-huh… yes
- 18:14you can tell he's worthy of respect.
- 18:15One more important thing about, Jalen Milroe.
- 18:18Did you notice the table where he was, there was a ceramic item on the table.
- 18:23Did you happen to notice that, Brandan, when he was eating?
- 18:26Brandan: Ceramic item on the table.
- 18:28No.
- 18:28Well, last episode I remember Drew Lock had, like, a, a poop emoji coffee cup.
- 18:34Yes.
- 18:34Phil: It was a poo emoji in the middle of the table.
- 18:36What was, what was up with the poo emoji?
- 18:38Does anybody know?
- 18:40Brandan: I think it was Drew Lock's coffee cup.
- 18:42Oh.
- 18:42Unless it's Milroe's, because I, I…
- 18:44Well, I couldn't tell because last week's show it stood out to me, and, and it
- 18:50was kind of in between Lock and Milroe.
- 18:54And I don't know, I, maybe I just assumed that because of Lock's personality that it
- 18:58was- Yeah… it was probably Drew Lock's.
- 18:59Phil: Well, it, nobody was drinking coffee this time.
- 19:01It was in the middle.
- 19:02I was wondering what it was.
- 19:03Oh, okay.
- 19:03I thought maybe it had, like, sugar in it or, like-…
- 19:06'cause I didn't see a coffee cup.
- 19:08it's a very- Interesting… important thing to me.
- 19:10Yeah.
- 19:10I've never seen a ceramic poo emoji.
- 19:15Brandan: Marlon85 in chat, "Did anyone sign Dejon Love?"
- 19:17I think he's been assigned to the, California Penal League based on the
- 19:23orange jumpsuit that, I saw, Marlon.
- 19:26But, yeah, it, one guy that we saw that was with the Seahawks, Trevon Diggs.
- 19:33Phil: Yeah.
- 19:33Brandan: And he was rocking the short shorts at practice.
- 19:37D Hall not happy- Yeah… with Diggs stepping on his turf.
- 19:41Phil: D Hall, D Hall seems to play to the cam a little bit
- 19:43and I'm not really sure that I…
- 19:45I think some of his teammates follow his humor.
- 19:47I'm trying to get it a little bit, but at first I'm like, "That's kinda rude
- 19:51to do to a p- to, do to a brand new pro bowler that's just joined the team."
- 19:55But I think he assumed that, Trey got it, or he's just really very
- 19:59territorial about being the guy with the one-and-a-half inch, shorts.
- 20:03And they did stand out again.
- 20:04Like, from the back I'm like, "That's a little bit much, dude.
- 20:07That's a little bit much."
- 20:08It, it looks worse on him, I think, than it did on Diggs who's a little more thin.
- 20:14Brandan: I, I, I didn't wanna go there as far as critiquing, where
- 20:19how the, how the shorts looked.
- 20:20It was more so that, D Hall felt like it was his turf- Yeah… as
- 20:25as being the short shorts guy.
- 20:26Phil: Yeah.
- 20:27I, I don't…
- 20:28And Diggs didn't care what D Hall said.
- 20:30What's the I don't care where you went to school?
- 20:32Brandan: Oh, that was, 'cause D Hall was talking with Diggs about
- 20:37he was from Auburn- Auburn, yeah
- 20:39and, he was Alabama.
- 20:40Phil: That's
- 20:41Brandan: right.
- 20:41And, yeah- They talked about Auburn… they were, so they were going back and
- 20:43forth a little about being SEC guys.
- 20:45Phil: And then Diggs I think gave us a little bit of
- 20:47a tip and hi- in his honesty.
- 20:49They were asking him when he'd be ready, and he said it'd be a couple
- 20:52weeks, and I think, I think he meant it.
- 20:55And- Yeah… it's kinda cool that they let us in to hear that.
- 20:58So I imagine we could anticipate him getting out there and, battling
- 21:03for some snaps maybe right away.
- 21:05Brandan: Yeah, and that's what Marlon said early on in the show too is that
- 21:08that it was that moment that made you, at least it helped you understand why
- 21:13a guy like Diggs who goes out, gets an interception, and you're thinking
- 21:17"Well, this guy should be on the 53.
- 21:19He shouldn't be h- having to wait and go to the practice squad."
- 21:22But it, it was that moment there that kind of let you in and, and you saw
- 21:28yeah, that, that made a lot more sense then that he wasn't quite ready and
- 21:33they were gonna use that opportunity.
- 21:35Might playbook him.
- 21:35Yeah.
- 21:35Yeah.
- 21:35With, with the playbook.
- 21:37yeah.
- 21:38And some of the conditioning aspects of it too, getting him ready for
- 21:43the start of the season Go Hawks to Sly Maverick in the chat.
- 21:48MyCoolVideos8719, D-Hall's shorts kept getting
- 21:53shorter as the show progressed.
- 21:54Thankfully it's only five weeks.
- 21:57Phil: There
- 21:57Brandan: was nothing left to- And Daisy Dukes, in a few more weeks
- 22:01Phil: I felt like Daisy Dukes may- Daisy Duke maybe showed less and, but
- 22:05maybe John Sneid- Schneider was gonna…
- 22:07We got our own John Schneider.
- 22:08He was gonna come out there and hang out with, Daisy Duke D-Hall, but
- 22:13Brandan: it's getting gross.
- 22:13Well, speaking of John Schneider, we got to see some of the
- 22:15ownership change behind the scenes.
- 22:18Yeah.
- 22:18Not, not a ton, but we got to see Schneider and Coach Mike
- 22:22watching it live on the iPad as, we got shots of the- Yeah
- 22:25owners meeting.
- 22:26I, I thought maybe, maybe we'd get a little bit more of that.
- 22:30Phil: I th- he's like, "We'll keep it simple and, we'll
- 22:32just go win another Super Bowl."
- 22:33The first time I saw it, I think it was on X earlier today and I thought- Yeah
- 22:36… John's like, "Yeah, we like this."
- 22:38But I think Jo- this time I watched it and I got it better.
- 22:41John's looking at Mike like, "Oh, simple.
- 22:43Yeah, we'll just win another Super Bowl."
- 22:45Hey, let's just, let's just go win another Super Bowl.
- 22:45It only took me, it only took me like 12 years to do this thing again
- 22:52Brandan: I thought that was a, a, yeah, a, at least a
- 22:54fun moment between those guys.
- 22:56TheCharlieTheUnicorn in chat, "Did they show Foster key moments?"
- 23:00Yeah, we got to see, got to see him getting hyped up by Coach
- 23:04Mike during the, showing some of the film from the Titans game.
- 23:08We got to see a few moments of Foster through the Chiefs game and then you
- 23:14got the really cool moment of Montorie Foster out on the dock at the- Yeah
- 23:19… VMAC hanging out by the water- Yeah
- 23:21calling his mom and dad not knowing whether or not they
- 23:24would pick up the phone.
- 23:25'cause apparently they were waiting until the final ring to answer
- 23:29the phone but, then you got that conversation which that conversation
- 23:33really was set up by a lot of the social media that they put out ahead
- 23:38of the, ahead of the episode even.
- 23:40That was, that was the moment that I think they were using to really
- 23:44tease this- Mm… season finale.
- 23:47Phil: And the other episodes leading in.
- 23:48Like, we kinda got to know the parents, we kinda got to know him.
- 23:51I was waiting for Sitting on the Dock of the Bay to play in the
- 23:54background as, he's there, as you said, talking to his mom and dad.
- 23:59He starts talking to his dad.
- 24:00I literally, I, I hate to admit this, I was actually tearing up and I didn't
- 24:04even know that I was gonna care that much.
- 24:06Those positive things that you can share with important people that obviously
- 24:10you're not just playing to the camera that have obviously helped you and, and given
- 24:14you the strength that you needed through some encouraging words and it happened.
- 24:18Like, they already knew it happened 'cause they're like, "Congratulations," when they
- 24:22answered so it was just waiting for the call to share in it but him saying that to
- 24:26his dad and, and that was, that was heavy.
- 24:29Like, that was pulling the juice out of my eyes for sure.
- 24:34Brandan: Marlin in chat saying, "Why would he join the
- 24:36practice squad when there are teams that would sign him to the 53?"
- 24:39And I think Marlin's talking about Trevon Diggs here.
- 24:42And I think that really goes to that communication piece between John
- 24:47Schneider, the head coach, the player.
- 24:50y- there, there may very well be other teams who would sign him to the 53.
- 24:56The, the thing is when you're a veteran and, and have so many years in the
- 24:59league, you can choose where you wanna go.
- 25:01So if- Yeah… if Diggs feels like, "This is the place where I feel that I
- 25:06can, have the best opportunity moving forward, being with a Super Bowl team
- 25:10being on a, a defense like Coach Mike.
- 25:13Yeah, I, I might end up playing for, you know, more of a veteran
- 25:16minimum contract this year."
- 25:18But if I see this as i- we've seen guys go to, you know, like
- 25:23a Baltimore Ravens defense- Yeah
- 25:25and, have a great season as a veteran to where then the next year
- 25:30they, they get a pretty significant pay bump because they, they showed
- 25:33up, they had the performance.
- 25:35And for a guy like Diggs, that could be the type of play for him to where
- 25:40he sees- Mm-hmm… "Yeah, I, I could be on a 53 on another team."
- 25:43Yeah.
- 25:43"But to be in this defense, to have those type of opportunities to
- 25:48where you see maybe on the depth chart, maybe there's a, a, a way you see a
- 25:54significant amount of playing time, like the opportunity is there," and, that
- 26:00could be where the, that appeal is, Phil.
- 26:02Phil: Those are some good thoughts, and this is a great
- 26:04question, and I'm just gonna say the uncomfortable thing right now, Brandan.
- 26:07John and Mike have told him there's a potential opening, 'cause
- 26:12John's been scrambling, looking everywhere, trying to find a corner.
- 26:16Th- that's been quite clear.
- 26:18If he gets that third corner spot, that's up to 70%-ish of the snaps.
- 26:23It's not a nothing role.
- 26:25It's as, it's a bigger role than a D line, than a rotational D
- 26:28line as far as number of snaps.
- 26:30It's not like he won't get picks if he gets that third cornerback.
- 26:33And also, he knows he's not ready to play right now.
- 26:36He's looked at this team.
- 26:37He can see himself.
- 26:38He's, he's a self-aware guy that understands.
- 26:41Every conversation I've seen with him about not being ready last
- 26:44year, about how ready he is right now, this guy's a very self-aware.
- 26:48He knows what he can, what he can't do.
- 26:50He sees a role for here, and he thinks he has a legit shot to be
- 26:54a true difference maker here, and as all the things you just said.
- 26:57If he pulls off what he sees himself being able to pull off, he will get paid
- 27:01well, and he'll have a lot of fun here.
- 27:03Why would he go elsewhere when he can see himself as a fit?
- 27:09Brandan: Another cool moment that I had in my notes, you had, Big Cat Leonard
- 27:14Williams getting his, extension.
- 27:17Yeah.
- 27:17And the, the cool moment with him and Julian Love sitting on the bench
- 27:23talking about how much time the, th- these two guys- Yeah… have really
- 27:26worked together over the years.
- 27:27How, how by the end of it, with Love having two years left on his deal
- 27:32with, Leo getting a, a three-year extension, and, and Love saying
- 27:38how that they, "Maybe we need to buy a boat together or an ice cream truck."
- 27:42Yeah.
- 27:42Phil: That was funny.
- 27:43I think they were trying to be natural there, Ben.
- 27:45And I think they're like, "Okay, we got the, well, we got the
- 27:48Hard Knocks camera right here.
- 27:50We've been used to it.
- 27:51We're trying to talk in a friendly moment.
- 27:53What are some things we can say and kind of include them?"
- 27:55But it was, it was good.
- 27:57They did the best they could, and I enjoyed it.
- 27:59But I…
- 28:00You couldn't help s- have D Hall has to come run over and go, "Oh
- 28:04there's my favorite camera again.
- 28:05I'm gonna get involved in this, in this story."
- 28:07But you gotta love those guys.
- 28:08I mean, even in their awkwardness of trying to not play to the camera but
- 28:14be who they were, these are good dudes.
- 28:17I, I, I…
- 28:18Julian Love, Ernest, Julian Love, Ernest Jones, but especially Leo
- 28:23Williams and, and Love, these leaders in just the way they handle themselves
- 28:28they really care about each other.
- 28:30They're not self-important.
- 28:31They're really not.
- 28:32They're having a great time, and they're inviting us in to enjoy their fun life.
- 28:37how can you not cheer for that and be happy for them?
- 28:40Brandan: And how can you not be amazed by Love's ability to dribble
- 28:44a football like a basketball- That's also true… behind his legs?
- 28:47Phil: Yeah, I'm just talking…
- 28:49I was, I was fascinated by that as well.
- 28:51I'm like, "Can that be done on turf, dribbling back and forth the football?"
- 28:59Brandan: Marlin85 in chat, "Feels like we missed out on the coaches
- 29:02going over the roster, but I like Mike showing great leadership."
- 29:06Yeah, I, I would've liked to see a little bit-
- 29:09Phil: That
- 29:10Brandan: wasn't gonna happen… they coulda made an entire episode just
- 29:13out of going over the roster and having those conversations and, yeah
- 29:18the, a big part of that, 'cause-
- 29:21Phil: Some of that honesty just can't hap- if you're talking about the coaches
- 29:24discussing who's gonna make it or not, I don't know that they could have that
- 29:28much honesty in front of everyone, right?
- 29:30Brandan: No, but I, I can understand wanting to hear a little bit more
- 29:35of if you can sanitize it in some way- Mm-hmm… and talk, really
- 29:40break down, you know, where those…
- 29:43Kinda like how we do on the show, right?
- 29:44That, that, you know that those conversations must happen about how guys
- 29:48are right on the bubble of the- Yeah
- 29:5053 and the practice squad or, you know, even, like I said, I go back to the
- 29:56Cody White thing, how a guy like Cody White that had spent so many years
- 30:01with the franchise and here was this opportunity with Jake Bobo going down
- 30:06to probably be, you know, possibly be that- Yeah… wide receiver five.
- 30:09And then Montorie Foster comes along, takes that, that number five spot.
- 30:15And sure, I, I suppose they were thinking, "Well, Cody White's been around.
- 30:18It, it…
- 30:19we'll, we'll have this spot open for him on the practice squad," and then…
- 30:23or ready squad.
- 30:24A- and then-
- 30:25Phil: Kubiak says no
- 30:25… Brandan: and then Kubiak says, "Hey, we want you to come down here," and
- 30:28it, and it wasn't even come down here and be on the 53 on- Yeah, that's-
- 30:32on a Raiders roster which you look at the six wide receivers
- 30:36that they kept and you go, "What?
- 30:37You couldn't have had Cody White th- as one of those six?"
- 30:41Yeah, I don't understand that.
- 30:41I don't understand that.
- 30:42But I'm sure Cody looked at that and said, "I, I can- I'll be there… I- I'll
- 30:45start on the practice squad, but I won't be on the practice squad in Las Veg."
- 30:51Phil: Yeah.
- 30:51And unfortunately they kept the…
- 30:55Am I still on?
- 30:55Can you hear me?
- 30:56Brandan: Oh, yeah.
- 30:56I got you.
- 30:57Phil: Yeah, it froze out for a second.
- 30:58I wasn't sure.
- 30:59And fortunately they kept all the Horton stuff out, but I get the
- 31:03feeling just by how they handled some of the rostering that we're
- 31:06expecting to see Horton really soon.
- 31:09Brandan: Yeah.
- 31:10It's…
- 31:12I, I h- hopefully game one.
- 31:14But, we didn't get much from Coach Mike when he said
- 31:17out for a time either, so
- 31:19Phil: If not, I mean, Foster gets open.
- 31:21I, I think he can legit…
- 31:22Foster can go out there and play in NF- Yeah… get some NFL snaps as a receiver.
- 31:26He gets open like Baldwin got open.
- 31:28Like, if you get open you can make a difference in the NFL
- 31:32Brandan: The Charlie the Unicorn asks, "Which coach during Hard
- 31:35Knocks made the biggest impression?"
- 31:37Running back coach?
- 31:38Cooper Cupp.
- 31:41I, I, Thomas Hammock is the running back coach, and, or F-bomb
- 31:46Hammock as, as you may know him.
- 31:48yeah, th- there was… I really like the wide receivers coach.
- 31:52But yeah, Coach Cupp.
- 31:54That's probably the right answer.
- 31:56Phil: Pete's, Pete's was pretty good on th- this episode, I give it to Pete.
- 32:00Overall, yeah, it's the wide receiver coach has been good throughout.
- 32:03What did they say?
- 32:04Oh.
- 32:05Brandan: Oh, Montez gets open.
- 32:07Phil: Yeah.
- 32:08Brandan: And I think that that was one of the things, even highlighting
- 32:12it through some of the shots, his route running ability- Yes… I
- 32:15I think is really what made his, earned him a spot on this roster.
- 32:19Phil: I mean, Baldwin was undrafted, and you just always got open.
- 32:22Well, that guy's gotta make the team, you know?
- 32:24If he… And, and Sherman would say he's just the hardest guy to, to keep a handle
- 32:29on 'cause he's shifty off the line, and we watched him do it over and over.
- 32:33And when a guy gets open, that's such a powerful skill, and Foster
- 32:38is a unique guy in that way.
- 32:40So I, I think he might make a difference sooner than later if he gets an opening.
- 32:45Brandan: Marlin85 in chat saying, "Why go, pick Busso over
- 32:49Eastern, a late draft pick?"
- 32:51well, both guys ended up making- Yeah… the 70-man roster.
- 32:55They both did.
- 32:55Yep.
- 32:55So I don't know.
- 32:56I, and I think whether or not, Marlin's talking about, you know, why
- 33:02show, highlight and feature one- Oh
- 33:04over the other, then it would be, personality-
- 33:08Phil: Yeah
- 33:09… Brandan: related
- 33:10Phil: I think.
- 33:10The show just found him endearing.
- 33:11They just, they felt like he was a fun guy to interview throughout.
- 33:14Yeah.
- 33:14And he's a gentle soul that was easy to cheer for.
- 33:18Brandan: Yeah.
- 33:19And, yeah, so I, I was…
- 33:21And it really worked out to him winning the talent show, then him making it at
- 33:26the end, and him getting coached up by the D-line coach in the, he kind of
- 33:31had that one-on-one moment at the end, where they're talking about what he can be
- 33:35as a, a lineman and, and so yeah, getting to see his journey through all of that.
- 33:41and, and I think that's just kind of what they tend to do with
- 33:44Hard Knocks is feature some of those- Yeah… down the roster type guys
- 33:48who have the types of personalities that you really can root for.
- 33:52Phil: Oh, and the, you didn't mention, Brad, but early on in the
- 33:54show, Mike was talking about how this was like the roughest week of
- 33:57the off-season or of camp of summer, and he was hoping to see- Yeah, last
- 34:01Brandan: week was the first week things didn't go our way.
- 34:04Phil: Yeah.
- 34:05So everything was just coming up roses, and then all that happened.
- 34:09Then Aaron Donald gets signed.
- 34:10No, I was kidding.
- 34:11But, there, there was a few things that took place, and with losing Bobo
- 34:16obviously was crushing, and, all the things that he does and how much he means
- 34:20to everybody, obviously that was painful.
- 34:23The game, yeah, was kind of painful.
- 34:25And then you're going into this game, and they're setting it up.
- 34:28They did show probably the most footage of any game this time
- 34:31but Mike was still hating it.
- 34:32He's like, "This is the worst game I've ever seen, like, ever."
- 34:36At any level.
- 34:37At
- 34:38Phil: any level.
- 34:39Yeah.
- 34:40I didn't think- See, that was
- 34:41Brandan: where Cup pushed back.
- 34:42He's like, "Well, at any level?"
- 34:45Phil: I didn't think that when I watched it, but it, I mean
- 34:48the second half maybe he was right and, and then they kicked it.
- 34:51Well
- 34:51Brandan: the first half.
- 34:51I, it, that was a commentary-
- 34:53Phil: Yeah
- 34:54… Brandan: through the montage of the first half, and then you saw them
- 34:57come out in the second half, and then that was the, the touchdown drive
- 35:01that you got to see from Milroe.
- 35:03Phil: Yeah.
- 35:03Brandan: I, it was- And the
- 35:04Phil: guy that is gonna, the guy that
- 35:05Brandan: is gonna get a- It was interesting they didn't
- 35:06feature the missed kicks film.
- 35:08Yes.
- 35:08I thought about that for you.
- 35:10Phil: That's what I'm saying.
- 35:10And the guy that is getting paid a lot and actually is going to matter, unfortunately
- 35:15he's gonna matter a ton during the season, they showed nothing of that.
- 35:19They're complaining about the game, but the worst thing, like a, the most
- 35:22ominous thing about the game is that we have to count on this guy who's
- 35:26struggling right now, who better get it fixed or we're actually in trouble.
- 35:31Nothing else that happened in that game really matters except for that
- 35:36Brandan: Do you think though that there wasn't any footage there to show?
- 35:40Because that's how- Oh, there was
- 35:42Phil: footage
- 35:43… Brandan: how, but I mean in terms of reacting to the missed kicks.
- 35:46Phil: Yes.
- 35:47Milroe went down and the guy messed up the catch, and he's upset with him
- 35:52like dropping F-bombs and going off.
- 35:54Sure.
- 35:55They show that.
- 35:56Well
- 35:56Phil: but- But then Milroe leads the team down to win the
- 35:58game and the kicker misses it.
- 36:00You get no body language on the sideline.
- 36:02You get no Milroe.
- 36:03You get no nothing.
- 36:04You, you don't even see whether the kick happened.
- 36:07Somebody, like John Schneider, said, "We're not showing that."
- 36:11Right?
- 36:11I think it- It had to be
- 36:12… Brandan: yeah.
- 36:12there, there had to be something, right?
- 36:15Yeah.
- 36:15Mychal video saying, "Don't want the kicker distracted."
- 36:18Phil: Yeah.
- 36:18Brandan: Charlie the Unicorn, "Don't tell me you want Moody to kick."
- 36:21Phil: Yeah, I, I'm not saying what the solution is.
- 36:24I'm saying that needs to get fixed, and I'm hoping it's Myers figures it out.
- 36:28This is supposed to be even-year Myers, right?
- 36:30Brandan: Yeah.
- 36:31Well, it's even-year regular season Myers, and-
- 36:34Phil: Okay
- 36:34… Brandan: you know.
- 36:35We're not there yet.
- 36:36That's
- 36:37Phil: that's all we need.
- 36:37That's all.
- 36:38Brandan: the Snail saying, "I can't wait for the season to start and the
- 36:41Rams to fall flat on their stupid faces."
- 36:44The Snail, "I can't wait for the season to start and for us to kick the
- 36:47Patriots' butt in back to back games."
- 36:50Phil: Yes.
- 36:50Yeah.
- 36:50Let's keep the winning streak going, and part of it will be
- 36:53back to back against the Pats.
- 36:55And, and just could keep it going all the way, just, just
- 37:00keep the winning streak going.
- 37:01But it starts one game at a time, right?
- 37:03And, and I definitely heard a lot of, best foot forward stuff this
- 37:07week, so maybe- Yeah… maybe we'll put our best foot forward by winning
- 37:10week one if we have to use something that people say over and over.
- 37:14Brandan: Then, I suppose we should probably give our critiques
- 37:19of the final bits of this episode.
- 37:23And
- 37:24Phil: Okay
- 37:24… Brandan: what did you like, what didn't you like when it came to them focusing
- 37:28on Coach Mike at the end of, of the episode, and a little bit of focus on
- 37:33Sam Darnold at the end of the episode?
- 37:37Phil: Well, they kind of finished up hyping up Coach Mike in a way
- 37:40that I thought was reasonable, and most every time- What kind of head
- 37:44Brandan: coach is this?
- 37:45Phil: Yes.
- 37:45Brandan: He's the winning kind.
- 37:47Phil: Yeah.
- 37:48Maybe that was corny.
- 37:49But every time they put Mike on there he couldn't help but just look good.
- 37:54But thankfully nobody can have him.
- 37:56We have him signed, so I'm not worried about that.
- 37:58So I guess I'm glad that Coach Mike gets just a constant…
- 38:02He's like the star and hero of Hard Knocks because he's not going
- 38:06anywhere, and so that's awesome.
- 38:08what were you talking about with, Sam at the
- 38:12Brandan: end?
- 38:12Closing with Sam Darnold running, like, to the end of the practice
- 38:15field and then running back.
- 38:16That just, that seemed like a weird- It was
- 38:19Phil: unremarkable.
- 38:20Yeah
- 38:20Brandan: It seemed like a weird way to go and to close out.
- 38:22I thought it was weird, too.
- 38:22Like, with all the, with all the cool footage that they had- I know
- 38:25at the start, it's like, "Oh, well, here's, here's Sam running a lap.
- 38:29The end."
- 38:30Phil: Yeah.
- 38:31I thought that wasn't very remarkable and it was not a
- 38:35great ending to a cool season.
- 38:37I have to agree with you there.
- 38:38Brandan: Yeah.
- 38:39Phil: And I thought when it came to humor, this one probably had the least.
- 38:42Like, D.
- 38:42Hall tried.
- 38:43Why are we not getting more Spoon?
- 38:45he should have been the star of this season.
- 38:48Yeah.
- 38:48Every time they show him I enjoy myself, and they just…
- 38:51Again, I was, I was a little bit bummed when they showed him for a second.
- 38:55I'm like, man, he should be on here so much more.
- 38:58Just he's fun.
- 38:59Everything he does is fun.
- 39:01Brandan: Right?
- 39:02Ryan in chat, "Heard Sam looks faster this year."
- 39:05Phil: Oh.
- 39:05Brandan: Yeah, that…
- 39:06It was just him jogging.
- 39:08Sam.
- 39:08And Clinton saying Sam was running it forward.
- 39:10Maybe a stretch
- 39:12Phil: I, I don't…
- 39:13You're right.
- 39:13I, I forgot about that.
- 39:14Maybe this wasn't the best episode.
- 39:16I thought it was the best episode until you just talked about
- 39:17Brandan: it.
- 39:18It was a good episode.
- 39:18I, I f- I feel like I'm closing on a downer by, by focusing on one of the
- 39:23bad parts because they're- What was your
- 39:24Phil: favorite, your favorite thing this episode, and then for the
- 39:27whole season, your two favorites?
- 39:29Brandan: From this episode, I, I love behind-the-scenes stuff.
- 39:33Okay.
- 39:33And so getting the behind-the-scenes view of their, of how they travel
- 39:40the, the airplane that they travel in.
- 39:43Okay.
- 39:43Somebody asked in chat, "Is that a new airplane?"
- 39:45I, I think it is new based on, how they used to travel three, four years
- 39:53ago because they ended up, I think they got marked down in terms of player report
- 39:58card of, of how they travel and, and there not being enough space for the players.
- 40:03And you could definitely see on that jet that there was plenty of space
- 40:07for guys to lay out and stretch.
- 40:09So y- you could tell where, the big guys and, and maybe the guys with the
- 40:13bigger contracts got to hang out, versus the guys who are more the rookies.
- 40:18But there's still, there, there was plenty of space back there.
- 40:21And like I said, with the Dolly Parton Nine to Five- Yeah… tribute
- 40:24in the background, that, that part of the episode- That was
- 40:26great… th- that did it for me.
- 40:28Phil: Okay.
- 40:29Our, my favorite we already covered was Foster with his parents.
- 40:32Sure.
- 40:32That was awesome 'cause it moved me.
- 40:34My favorite that we did not cover, my, my…
- 40:38Just escaped my mind.
- 40:39No, my, my favorite that, that we did not cover was when Mike was starting
- 40:44in and I'm like, "Boa constrictor?"
- 40:48How are we like a boa constrictor?
- 40:50Because I like to teach my players on defense in soccer
- 40:53to be like a rattlesnake.
- 40:54We're-
- 40:55Brandan: Hmm
- 40:55… Phil: we're ready, but we're not gonna strike until they get too close.
- 40:59A rattlesnake doesn't go until you're too close.
- 41:01'Cause if you go early, then you're, you're nothing.
- 41:04You're toast.
- 41:05A boa constrictor is kinda slow, but then I loved how he
- 41:09began unlayering what he meant.
- 41:11We just keep tightening the pressure.
- 41:14We apply- Yeah… pressure, more and more pressure, and then they're
- 41:16squeezed to death basically.
- 41:18Yeah.
- 41:18And so- Until the scales-
- 41:20Brandan: That was a-… tip in our favor.
- 41:21Phil: Yes.
- 41:22So I like that.
- 41:23A- and I, I'm gonna be watching for that this season, the boa constrictor.
- 41:26How about for the whole season, Brandan, your favorite moment, five episodes?
- 41:31Brandan: Oh.
- 41:32Oh, favorite moment in five episodes.
- 41:34I, I think, it, it's more of a theme overall.
- 41:38The, the, the…
- 41:41I like soundtracks.
- 41:42Yeah.
- 41:42And so the fact that they worked in a lot of those Seattle soundtracks-
- 41:47Mm-hmm… whether it was Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Jimi Hendrix, all, having
- 41:52all of those, you know, Seattle area soundtracks that, that were
- 41:57recognizable as part of the, part of the city, part of the culture.
- 42:02Oh, yeah.
- 42:03And, and the shots of the VMAC.
- 42:05Like, you- Yeah… wondered who the star of this was gonna be.
- 42:08I think overall the star was just how picturesque the- VMAC… VMAC area is.
- 42:13Phil: You might be right.
- 42:14Yeah, the overarching theme of the VMAC being beautiful, the camera
- 42:17work with the sprinklers, you know?
- 42:20a lot of that was pretty good.
- 42:22Yep.
- 42:22Brandan: th- before we get to yours, WD Ford in chat asks how many
- 42:26doors does Brandan have in his house?
- 42:28'cause it's kind of funny 'cause I have, I have two doors behind me.
- 42:32So behind the scenes, this is, this is actually a mudroom, and so the one of
- 42:38the doors is to the garage- Oh… and one of the doors is to the house.
- 42:41And so, when- That makes sense… I used to have an office, in my house
- 42:47because I do a lot of work from home.
- 42:49Yeah.
- 42:50And, and then the, all my girls grew up, and they wanted their own separate
- 42:54rooms, and so I made a little, office nook for myself in the mudroom.
- 42:59Phil: That's fantastic.
- 43:00Hey, WD Ford, guess what?
- 43:03Brandan has as many doors in this room as he has A's in his name.
- 43:06There's two A's in Brandan.
- 43:08You gotta know that, if you're watching the Seahawks Podcast
- 43:10by now- Oh, there you go… or if this is your first time
- 43:12Brandan: dialing- That's name critique.
- 43:13Phil: Yes.
- 43:15Brandan: Okay, so, your favorite, from all the episodes, Phil.
- 43:18Phil: Oh, that's tough.
- 43:19That's pretty tough.
- 43:21Brandan: Yeah.
- 43:21You had time to think about it while I was giving my answer though, so I- You bought
- 43:23Phil: me all this time.
- 43:24I should've known you
- 43:25Brandan: were- I bought you all this time to answer
- 43:27… Phil: I should've known you were coming back to it.
- 43:30Yeah, I mean, far as overarching theme, the star you said was the VMac.
- 43:35I still think the star is Mike.
- 43:37I already liked him.
- 43:38He's the guy I wanted us to hire, and we hired him, and he was far beyond
- 43:42what I ever might have hoped for.
- 43:44We did better than I might have hoped for last season, and I knew
- 43:47Mike was a lot to do with it.
- 43:48I am more confident than ever after watching him, how he
- 43:51handles all these things.
- 43:53His humility, Mike's incredible brilliance, and yet it's all filtered
- 43:59through just actual, real, natural humility- It just goes through everywhere.
- 44:06All the leaders are the same.
- 44:07Cup's that way.
- 44:08Leo's that way.
- 44:09I mean, it just, it- Sam is that way.
- 44:12The, the way in which they all s- are trying to get sharper and do their
- 44:17best, and they're not self-impressed but they're self-aware, and they're, they
- 44:22know who each other are because they're willing to know who they are and their
- 44:26place in it, and they can challenge each other honestly because they're not
- 44:30putting on airs, that stands out, and that's a takeaway that I'll never lose.
- 44:35Just watching the man Mike and how he goes about his business has affected
- 44:39us, I think, and for that, the, the time spent watching it is valuable.
- 44:45Brandan: Absolutely.
- 44:46And, Whistle Jacket in chat saying, "Favorite moment, definitely
- 44:49D Law making fun of the hot pants."
- 44:51What are we doing?
- 44:52Phil: Yeah.
- 44:53That was the funniest part.
- 44:54Yeah.
- 44:55Yeah.
- 44:56Brandan: Charlie the unicorn, JS walking on the treadmill all the time
- 44:59talking to employees, phone calls, nuts.
- 45:01yeah, it's all of the behind-the-scenes stuff that you get
- 45:05to see, but really I, I think you pointed it out, Phil, the, the pi-
- 45:09the behind-the-scenes stuff of Coach Mike and seeing a- and really getting
- 45:14a sense of what he's all about is something that, for one, we're on board.
- 45:22You just won us a Super Bowl anyway.
- 45:23Yeah.
- 45:24Phil: Sure.
- 45:24Brandan: But to then see a, a lot of the reasoning of, oh
- 45:30this is, this is the reason why.
- 45:31Yeah.
- 45:32It's because our coach is like this.
- 45:35Yeah.
- 45:35And he, the way that he interacts with all of the…
- 45:39It, it, this is what culture is all about and how a coaching staff and
- 45:45a general manager, how you can build culture through, you know, key people.
- 45:50You get, you get to see the sense of that.
- 45:53Phil: I think it goes with Dolly, like Dolly just passed.
- 45:55Everybody who ever met her, they felt like healing and kindness.
- 45:58I, I've been around her a little bit when, I was a bellman a long time
- 46:02ago, and there's all these diva stars, and so many of them are total jerks.
- 46:06She literally, if she knew you were around her, she made you feel better
- 46:10just by how she handled herself and treated you with so much value.
- 46:14Like, if you just knew you were valued.
- 46:17Mike in a manly way, in a, in, rather than the lovely feminine way, in a
- 46:23manly, still tough-guy way shows that.
- 46:27Like, everybody has value, and he's trying to help you become all that
- 46:31you can be, and that's just how he is.
- 46:33That's how he breathes.
- 46:34That's how he exists.
- 46:36Brandan: Yeah.
- 46:37So, really cool to finish off that series, Phil.
- 46:41And now we are just days away from taking on the New England Patriots.
- 46:47We got shows coming up.
- 46:48we're gonna be talking to Mookie Alexander later this week.
- 46:51Cool.
- 46:51I know they have some, some cool stuff going on over at SB Nation that
- 46:55we're gonna talk to Mookie about.
- 46:57I'm gonna have, planning to have Michael-Shawn Dugar on the
- 47:01show, who was a reporter for The Athletic, reported on the Seahawks.
- 47:04He's no longer reporting with the Seahawks, but he just
- 47:07came out with a, a new book.
- 47:08Mm.
- 47:0912 is 1, and so I'm gonna talk to, to Mike about his new book.
- 47:13We have a, our season expectations show coming up, me
- 47:17Adam Emmett, episode 505.
- 47:19Phil: Nice.
- 47:20Brandan: we're gonna be doing that, and then, Phil, we'll have a What If
- 47:23preview maybe coming up Monday next week.
- 47:27Is that the plan?
- 47:28Phil: That's the plan.
- 47:29Try to guess the, theme here, and it's a new guy.
- 47:32Brandan: Try and guess the theme, which is Phil looking for ideas for a theme.
- 47:36Phil: I have an idea for a theme.
- 47:37It has to do with a new, very important person that is on the Seahawks.
- 47:42Brandan: Ooh, a very important person.
- 47:45All right, Blue Bets.
- 47:46let's see.
- 47:47W- if we have a…
- 47:50If we do that Monday, we have a very full week, Marlon.
- 47:53I, i- if, if we
- 47:56Brandan: can- 'Cause- As a g- and our season starts early, like, several-
- 47:59Brandan: Our season starts early.
- 48:00We, we may not have, And you're
- 48:02Phil: traveling.
- 48:03Brandan: Yeah, we're traveling, and we're gonna be meeting up with the flock at
- 48:0713 Coins on Tuesday ahead of the game.
- 48:11So while we would normally record that show on, the day before the game, that
- 48:17day's gonna be awfully full for us, so we, we may have to- Just go to a card shop in
- 48:20Phil: Seattle and- Yeah… put together your
- 48:22blue show, whatever that is.
- 48:24Brandan: We'll, we'll have to see.
- 48:25Yeah.
- 48:25Collectible.
- 48:25If, if we can, if we can fit that in Tuesday night, so that way you could
- 48:30have it in your podcast feed Wednesday morning before the, before the actual
- 48:34game, maybe that's- Do a Wednesday morning
- 48:36maybe that's how we get it done.
- 48:38Clinton's saying, "We can do Blue Bets live- Wednesday
- 48:40morning… Wednesday morning.
- 48:41Let's go."
- 48:42Phil: Go find yourself a collectible shop, which I know
- 48:44Brandan and Clinton would love to enjoy-… and just sit down and, and
- 48:47carry out your, your Blue Bets show.
- 48:49Brandan: Oh, we got an Airbnb.
- 48:51We'll, we'll be doing great, so yeah.
- 48:52We'll, we'll, we'll find a way.
- 48:54We'll, we'll record some content while we're out there.
- 48:56It…
- 48:57Really appreciate everybody tuning in, but yeah, we got, we got a lot going on.
- 49:01Really wanna thank Ryan911 who came in with the 49.99.
- 49:06Awesome, man.
- 49:07And, continuing to be our Live Executive Producer, and thanks
- 49:11to everybody who joined us live for the finale of Hard Knocks.
- 49:17And I think with that, Phil- And with
- 49:18Phil: that, with that, Brandan-
- 49:20Brandan: There's only one thing left to say
- 49:22… Phil: go Hawks.
- 49:23Brandan: Go Hawks.
