- 1:12Tom Jackobs: So let's dive in.
- 1:13Tom Jackobs: Joy, welcome to the show.
- 1:14Joy Musacchio: Oh, thank you so much, my honor.
- 1:16Joy Musacchio: Thank you.
- 1:17Tom Jackobs: I'm, really excited to talk to you today, especially because, of the essential oils that you do, which are a lot different than what most people think on essential oils, especially when it's the big, multi-level marketing type of, oil companies out there.
- 1:34Tom Jackobs: And I, I love what you're doing and I can't wait to share that with the rest of the audience here.
- 1:39Tom Jackobs: But of course, the first thing that I always ask is, what's your definition of a heart-led business?
- 1:45Joy Musacchio: Oh, let's see.
- 1:46Joy Musacchio: That's a great question.
- 1:47Joy Musacchio: So, okay, so I'm from Sedona and, well, originally New York, but I'm from Sedona now, so I won't get too woo-woo because I don't really, I believe in half woo.
- 1:56Joy Musacchio: Woo-woo is not great, but okay.
- 1:58Joy Musacchio: So for me, a heart-led business is, it's a, it's not just a business run with love, it's a business run from coherence.
- 2:05Joy Musacchio: So to me, the heart isn't just an emotional place, and love isn't just being nice to people, it's integration.
- 2:13Joy Musacchio: So, instinct, intellect, intuition, meet and agree at the center of it.
- 2:19Joy Musacchio: And I think that a heart-led business is a business where decisions are made from alignment rather than fear and way rather than greed.
- 2:28Joy Musacchio: So, pretty much it asks, is this integrity?
- 2:32Joy Musacchio: Is this clean?
- 2:32Joy Musacchio: Does this strengthen the field or does it distort it?
- 2:35Joy Musacchio: And love for me in this context isn't soft, this intelligent, discerning, and also willing to say heart-led business understands that everything requires frequency, products, pricing, marketing, leadership, even how we pour, how we ship.
- 2:52Joy Musacchio: So if we're careless, rushed.
- 2:54Joy Musacchio: Trying to cut corners, which I never do or disconnected.
- 2:58Joy Musacchio: The energy shows up, it really does.
- 2:59Joy Musacchio: It shows up in the work, it shows up in the oils.
- 3:01Joy Musacchio: So I think anybody that has a business, it's a, a stewardship and for me, the stewardship of plant intelligence, people's trust, my own nervous system, of the land growers, distillers, and the unseen.
- 3:18Joy Musacchio: So it's not about being nice, it's about being congruent.
- 3:21Joy Musacchio: And congruent creates safety.
- 3:23Joy Musacchio: Safety creates healing.
- 3:25Joy Musacchio: Healing creates empowerment.
- 3:27Tom Jackobs: I love that.
- 3:28Tom Jackobs: That is, that's one of the better, definitions that I've, that I've heard in over 140 episodes.
- 3:35Tom Jackobs: It's just very, the, the alignment piece, the coherence, it totally makes sense.
- 3:40Tom Jackobs: So thank you for sharing that.
- 3:41Joy Musacchio: Thank You.
- 3:44Tom Jackobs: That's great.
- 3:44Tom Jackobs: So tell us about your journey, getting into the oil business.
- 3:49Joy Musacchio: Okay.
- 3:50Joy Musacchio: So that it's a good, twisty story.
- 3:52Joy Musacchio: So back in the day, I taught school in New York.
- 3:56Joy Musacchio: I taught fifth grade, and then I moved to Florida for, eight years.
- 4:01Joy Musacchio: And then I ended up in Sedona.
- 4:04Joy Musacchio: And so when I moved to Sedona, I started a massage business and I used essential oils in the massage business.
- 4:12Joy Musacchio: And I had also spent eight years in a mystery school.
- 4:15Joy Musacchio: I had the energetic stuff and the, all of that chakras, the aura, the this, the that, and the oils.
- 4:22Joy Musacchio: And I was working with a local company and they for a couple years, and the integrity just didn't match.
- 4:31Joy Musacchio: So I'd never planned to start an aromatics business.
- 4:36Joy Musacchio: I mean, at all.
- 4:37Joy Musacchio: I wanted to find some oils for my customers, my massage clients, and, so I started emailing distillers.
- 4:45Joy Musacchio: And I did.
- 4:46Joy Musacchio: So I emailed distillers in Nepal and in Australia, and I said, you know, can I, I'd like to buy a kilo, which is about a quart of essential oil.
- 4:54Joy Musacchio: And they're like, oh, of course.
- 4:55Joy Musacchio: And before you knew it, they, I had 168 kilos of all different essential oils from all over the world, in my house.
- 5:04Joy Musacchio: And I said, oh.
- 5:05Joy Musacchio: I said, I think I'm supposed to be doing something more than just buying them for my massage business.
- 5:12Joy Musacchio: And that's really how Still Point was born.
- 5:15Joy Musacchio: And so I think the business found me, but the really neat part about it is the Sublayer, and that is in 2009 when I started the business, the economy was collapsing, right?
- 5:26Joy Musacchio: The banks were failing the.
- 5:28Joy Musacchio: Chicken Little was saying the sky was falling and it was the least rational time to, to start a business.
- 5:34Joy Musacchio: And, but it felt right to me.
- 5:37Joy Musacchio: So I funded it by selling, the jewelry my mother had left me, when she passed away.
- 5:42Joy Musacchio: And that is a next sub layer because, my mom had been pregnant nine times.
- 5:47Joy Musacchio: I'm the 10th kid, and all the babies before me either miscarried or were born, lived one day and then passed away.
- 5:55Joy Musacchio: So, selling her jewelry was, it was the last piece of her that I had.
- 6:00Joy Musacchio: I talked to her and she did not talk back to me and I sold it and I started the business.
- 6:06Tom Jackobs: What an amazing story and journey.
- 6:09Tom Jackobs: And I wanna dive into one, piece of that really stuck out to me.
- 6:13Tom Jackobs: You know, going from a service business into a product business, that's a huge shift in terms of just complexity, in terms of the business style, you know, a product business is so much more complex, I believe than, you know, a service business.
- 6:29Tom Jackobs: So how, how did that education happen?
- 6:33Tom Jackobs: Like that's amazing that you were able to do that and are thriving with the, the product business now.
- 6:38Joy Musacchio: You're right.
- 6:38Joy Musacchio: I mean it is.
- 6:39Joy Musacchio: 'cause you know, when you teach school, you get your 30 kids every year and the 60 parents that come with them, and they're your people for the year, you know, and so it's a close system.
- 6:50Joy Musacchio: Sometimes it's a great year, sometimes not so much, but yeah.
- 6:54Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 6:55Joy Musacchio: But you're working one-on-one with people, so it's contained.
- 6:58Joy Musacchio: And I don't think I was prepared for the internet product thing, you know, because it, it took a while before I realized that well, not everybody thinks the way I think, and not everybody treats people, the way that we treat people.
- 7:14Joy Musacchio: And I think it was after a year in, I said, oh, I said, this is like, I have a storefront on every single corner that I sell to.
- 7:24Joy Musacchio: You know, so if it's New York and New Yorkers, I'm great with,'cause I'm a New Yorker, you know?
- 7:28Joy Musacchio: But different parts of the country is very different.
- 7:31Joy Musacchio: It was a learning curve.
- 7:32Joy Musacchio: It was you're right.
- 7:32Tom Jackobs: Was it like trial by fire or did you get some help, to kinda navigate the business landscape?
- 7:38Joy Musacchio: Trial by fire.
- 7:40Joy Musacchio: Yep.
- 7:40Joy Musacchio: Just kept plugging along.
- 7:42Joy Musacchio: Do you know that?
- 7:42Joy Musacchio: The thing is that it's, my business is, I call it a, it reminds me of Sedona.
- 7:47Joy Musacchio: 'cause Sedona is a small town, but big city in a lot of ways with the restaurants and the art and stuff.
- 7:53Joy Musacchio: And my business is small business, but people looking on the website think it's huge business, you know?
- 8:00Joy Musacchio: People will call and they'll say, I don't know when my stuff is shipping from your warehouse.
- 8:07Joy Musacchio: Like, I don't have a warehouse.
- 8:08Joy Musacchio: We do everything.
- 8:09Joy Musacchio: It's old mom and pop, you know, so it, it usually I'm standing on a part of the floor that's squeaking in my shop and I'm looking around and I'm saying warehouse.
- 8:18Joy Musacchio: So, yeah.
- 8:20Tom Jackobs: Yes.
- 8:21Tom Jackobs: Warehouse.
- 8:21Tom Jackobs: Did you mean garage.
- 8:25Tom Jackobs: That's awesome.
- 8:26Tom Jackobs: So what do you believe makes your business heart-led?
- 8:31Joy Musacchio: Oh, good question.
- 8:33Joy Musacchio: So I believe that, it's the way that I feel about the oils, the way that I feel about people and the way I feel about humanity.
- 8:40Joy Musacchio: And sometimes humanity I'm not so crazy about, but I love humanity.
- 8:44Joy Musacchio: I love them anyway, you know?
- 8:46Joy Musacchio: I wanna make money.
- 8:47Joy Musacchio: I mean, we need money to live.
- 8:49Joy Musacchio: You know, I tell people if I win lotto.
- 8:51Joy Musacchio: Oils will be free to everybody I like and I'm gonna double the price.
- 8:55Joy Musacchio: And I'm joking.
- 8:56Joy Musacchio: I love people, you know, and, and it's the real deal like that.
- 9:00Joy Musacchio: So, there's nothing fake.
- 9:02Joy Musacchio: I don't feel that the oils are products.
- 9:05Joy Musacchio: I feel that they're living, living beings.
- 9:07Joy Musacchio: Not that they talk to me, but they're, they're the lifeblood of the plant, their medicine.
- 9:12Joy Musacchio: And nothing's pre-poured.
- 9:13Joy Musacchio: Nothing is pre-poured.
- 9:15Joy Musacchio: Everything is done in the moment with intention and a bit of ceremony.
- 9:19Tom Jackobs: Okay, so when, when you get an order, you're preparing everything specifically for that order.
- 9:25Joy Musacchio: Yes.
- 9:25Joy Musacchio: Yeah.
- 9:26Joy Musacchio: So we get an order, we print it out, we read it and, write a note.
- 9:30Joy Musacchio: So it would be like, you know, dear Tom, thank you so much for your order.
- 9:32Joy Musacchio: I really hope that you enjoy the lavender.
- 9:35Joy Musacchio: Much love, Joy.
- 9:37Joy Musacchio: And then we pour it, hand pour it, and then we hand label it.
- 9:41Joy Musacchio: And, then I'm usually the one that's packing, and so then we pack, pack and ship.
- 9:47Tom Jackobs: Wow.
- 9:47Tom Jackobs: Awesome.
- 9:48Tom Jackobs: That's a labor of love, right?
- 9:50Tom Jackobs: Because I'm sure there's machines out there that can do some of that for you.
- 9:55Tom Jackobs: Why, why the choice, the intentional choice of doing it this way?
- 10:00Joy Musacchio: Because a lot of the times when, you could see the list of oils, someone orders, you kind of could tell what they're ordering for.
- 10:07Joy Musacchio: You know, if it's a cold, a flu, or this or that.
- 10:09Joy Musacchio: That's one thing.
- 10:10Joy Musacchio: The other thing is, is that I'm a big believer in, intention, like, like I could make a dish of pasta and so could my friend, and if they're an asshole and being in that mood, and I'm not, the mine is going to come out.
- 10:25Joy Musacchio: It's going, there's gonna be a subs, an underneath substance to it, you know, I know this sounds so hokey, but truly, you know, so I, so this is a quick story.
- 10:33Joy Musacchio: So when we get the oils, I get the oils in and we, I detox them energetically, so to speak, which might be a little out there for some people, but then I play music for them and then we decant, we do a ceremony.
- 10:48Joy Musacchio: We thank the oil and light a candle, put on some music, and then I decant into amber bottles that we, that we pour from.
- 10:56Joy Musacchio: And so anyway, a friend of mine who had another company, in another state, I was ordering from Thailand.
- 11:01Joy Musacchio: And so I called her up and I said, do you need anything from Thailand?
- 11:05Joy Musacchio: She said, yes, I need finger root.
- 11:07Joy Musacchio: And I said, okay.
- 11:08Joy Musacchio: So I was ordering finger root too.
- 11:10Joy Musacchio: And for those of your people, well, nobody knows what finger root is.
- 11:14Joy Musacchio: It smells the way it sounds, right?
- 11:17Joy Musacchio: It smells like, finger root, it's not bad, but you wouldn't say like, hit me with another shot of finger root for, for a perfume, right?
- 11:25Joy Musacchio: So anyway, I got five kilos, and I divided it up.
- 11:29Joy Musacchio: I poured two and a half and I sent my friend the other, and then I met her at a conference about a year later.
- 11:36Joy Musacchio: And she came over and she smelled the finger root.
- 11:38Joy Musacchio: And she said, this finger root, you got new finger root.
- 11:40Joy Musacchio: This is lovely.
- 11:41Joy Musacchio: And I said, this is the same finger root that I gave you.
- 11:44Joy Musacchio: I said, this is not a big seller, you know?
- 11:46Joy Musacchio: And she said, but your smells softer.
- 11:48Joy Musacchio: There's a different quality to it.
- 11:50Joy Musacchio: And I said, okay.
- 11:52Joy Musacchio: I guess I proved the invisible to myself with the love and the attitude towards something.
- 11:58Joy Musacchio: 'cause my friend is wonderful, but she looks at the oils, their, their products, and she's a supplier.
- 12:05Joy Musacchio: And I'm not, I'm a treshold.
- 12:07Tom Jackobs: Nice.
- 12:08Tom Jackobs: I love that story.
- 12:09Tom Jackobs: That, yeah, that, would prove it to me that, you know, the, the care and handling and the extra that you do with it just preserves the, the fragrance probably a lot better.
- 12:19Tom Jackobs: So let's shift gears just a little bit and talk about the business side.
- 12:24Tom Jackobs: You know, going from being a teacher and then being a massage therapist and then going into, this business, it sounds like you had to be a self learner in terms of everything that takes to be a business owner and to have a product-based business.
- 12:40Tom Jackobs: So what was that journey like for you in terms of getting that education or figuring it out on your own and, and then balancing that business, which is always so dry, right?
- 12:53Tom Jackobs: It's not, people don't think that the business side has a lot of love to it.
- 12:57Tom Jackobs: I think it does.
- 12:58Tom Jackobs: But how do you balance that with the more, energetic and, and the love and care that, that you do for the other part of the business.
- 13:06Joy Musacchio: Yeah, that was, that was a bit of a learning curve, you know.
- 13:09Joy Musacchio: Well from sourcing the, not sourcing the oils, but the bottles and the caps and the labels, and then the insurance and shipping.
- 13:18Joy Musacchio: And it was, and realizing that, there's a lot more that goes into pricing something than just what you pay for it, you know?
- 13:26Joy Musacchio: And, and it was, curve.
- 13:27Joy Musacchio: I underpriced for a long, long time.
- 13:29Joy Musacchio: I think for many reasons.
- 13:31Joy Musacchio: I didn't have experience, but I also wanted the oils to reach people that they needed to reach, you know, and it took a year or two and stuff before I realized, okay, this is a business.
- 13:43Joy Musacchio: I mean, this is also a business not just this passion.
- 13:47Joy Musacchio: And, so I read a couple of books like the Blue Ocean Strategy, you know, it's a couple of business books and I kind of dialed myself in.
- 13:57Joy Musacchio: I don't know if I answered your question.
- 13:59Tom Jackobs: What did that feel like going like.
- 14:01Tom Jackobs: Having to learn the business side for being, kinda in the softer fields if, if I could say it that way.
- 14:09Tom Jackobs: You know, business, you know, black and white numbers, you know, zeros and ones.
- 14:13Tom Jackobs: So what was that like for you to make that transition and realize, I have to know this business if I wanna serve more people?
- 14:22Joy Musacchio: Oh, that was a hard truth.
- 14:23Joy Musacchio: You're right.
- 14:24Joy Musacchio: The softer side for sure.
- 14:25Joy Musacchio: And also, I mean, I'm Italian and I was a teacher and I was like the only kid.
- 14:32Joy Musacchio: So there's the and, and I'm a Libra and all of that stuff.
- 14:35Joy Musacchio: I'm, I'm a nice person.
- 14:36Joy Musacchio: I'm real generous.
- 14:37Joy Musacchio: I'll give you the shirt off of my back.
- 14:38Joy Musacchio: So to actually say, no, no, this is a business and actually I not deserve, it's the wrong word, but, it actually, there, there's an exchange happening here, a fair exchange, you know, for,
- 14:51Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 14:51Joy Musacchio: Product and that took a while.
- 14:52Joy Musacchio: And, and finally I think I came to the point that if I didn't value, and this is gonna sound so like hokey, but if I didn't value what I was selling, if I didn't value what I was offering, then nobody else would too.
- 15:04Joy Musacchio: That was a switch.
- 15:06Joy Musacchio: And I always ask myself a question before I put a new class up or a new product up or anything.
- 15:11Joy Musacchio: I ask myself, would I buy this?
- 15:13Joy Musacchio: And if the answer is no.
- 15:15Joy Musacchio: Then I think I price it differently.
- 15:17Tom Jackobs: Oh, interesting.
- 15:18Joy Musacchio: I hate being ripped off.
- 15:19Joy Musacchio: And I, and I refuse to rip anybody off.
- 15:21Joy Musacchio: But then sometimes when you have that fear or bias, you go way the other way.
- 15:27Joy Musacchio: You know that you're like, oh, I'll pay you to take my stuff.
- 15:30Joy Musacchio: Like, well, I'm not gonna make any money.
- 15:33Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 15:34Tom Jackobs: Well, I'm, I'm sure there were points in, in the business where at that point where you had to make a decision of, do I raise the rates?
- 15:42Tom Jackobs: Do I do something different?
- 15:45Tom Jackobs: Because, you know, money's going out faster than it's coming in and you know when, when you come down to those, those issues, it's hard to kind of keep that heart-led piece into it, but I know a lot of people still keep that heart-led and, and balance it.
- 16:02Tom Jackobs: How about for you?
- 16:03Tom Jackobs: Was, was there a balancing act when times got tough and how did you approach that?
- 16:09Joy Musacchio: So that would be kind of like right now because with, with the change of administration and so forth and so on, now we have these tariffs and essential oils.
- 16:21Joy Musacchio: Were never tariffed.
- 16:22Joy Musacchio: So, I had to order, I, I ordered these oils, white, ginger, lily, and, I order carrot seed, white ginger lily, Spikenard and vetiver from India.
- 16:31Joy Musacchio: And I worked with this one distiller.
- 16:33Joy Musacchio: And the oils are exquisite and white ginger lily is a pricey one.
- 16:38Joy Musacchio: So where you could buy, let's say lemon, you pay a hundred dollars for a quart or so, white ginger lily is 3,200 bucks for a quart.
- 16:46Joy Musacchio: So it's,
- 16:47Tom Jackobs: Oh my gosh.
- 16:48Joy Musacchio: It's an expensive, it's like an expensive oil and it's beautiful.
- 16:52Joy Musacchio: So I put off as long as I could, ordering from the guy, and then I ordered from him and I did this consciously.
- 17:00Joy Musacchio: And everyone was saying, look, somewhere else, because the tax from for India was 52%.
- 17:06Joy Musacchio: So my order was a$5,700 order of oils, and then I got tariff 3,100 bucks.
- 17:15Tom Jackobs: Wow.
- 17:15Joy Musacchio: And I absorbed it though.
- 17:16Joy Musacchio: I absorbed that, this time.
- 17:18Joy Musacchio: And I will as long as I can.
- 17:20Joy Musacchio: I'm hoping that things will roll.
- 17:21Joy Musacchio: I'm hoping roll back a little.
- 17:24Joy Musacchio: 'cause it's not sustainable and it isn't fair, you know?
- 17:27Joy Musacchio: So with that, I try and, I'll never cut corners.
- 17:30Joy Musacchio: Like I won't carry the oil.
- 17:32Joy Musacchio: I won't carry the oil if I can't get the one I want instead of getting some crap, you know?
- 17:39Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 17:39Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 17:40Joy Musacchio: And, and luckily I was able
- 17:41Tom Jackobs: to
- 17:42Joy Musacchio: absorb it.
- 17:43Tom Jackobs: Yeah, yeah, for sure.
- 17:45Tom Jackobs: Then that, that brings up another good question, when those things happen where you are looking for a oil, but it's just not available.
- 17:55Tom Jackobs: You could go somewhere else and get it, but you know, the quality is not that great at the other place.
- 17:59Tom Jackobs: Like how do you kinda, what's, what's your kind of mindset or your, your flow, your decision making process to say, no, I'm going to stick with what I believe is right and I'm just, I'm gonna go without because there's no other good option.
- 18:17Joy Musacchio: Yeah.
- 18:17Joy Musacchio: And, so, and you know, the, the good thing about, well the lucky thing about oils is, or at least my business, I have like 400 essential oils, right?
- 18:26Joy Musacchio: So there, there's, it's a, it's a big library of oils and hydrosols.
- 18:31Joy Musacchio: I just can't justify selling something that like, if you want it for a candle, you know, or make cleaning products, go, go, go buy, go, go, go.
- 18:41Joy Musacchio: There's so many places.
- 18:42Joy Musacchio: But if you want oils to use medicinally or to do deep inner work, you know, to, and I think.
- 18:48Joy Musacchio: I honestly think everyone should be doing deep inner work now because it's such an interesting time to be on the planet.
- 18:54Joy Musacchio: I can't justify going against not what I want, but what's right, you know?
- 19:01Joy Musacchio: Right, right for me, and so, and oftentimes if I can't find an oil, or a hydrosol, then I'll distill it myself.
- 19:09Joy Musacchio: I'll get the plant material and I'll distill it and not, not the essential oil, but the hydrosol, which is the water part of the oil.
- 19:16Tom Jackobs: Okay.
- 19:17Tom Jackobs: Getting some kisses there from your dog.
- 19:19Tom Jackobs: That's awesome.
- 19:20Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 19:22Tom Jackobs: Cool.
- 19:22Tom Jackobs: Yeah.
- 19:22Tom Jackobs: Those gotta be really tough decisions to make sometimes, especially if you have customers that are wanting a certain oil and you're just like, sorry, like, I can't find something good enough for you.
- 19:34Tom Jackobs: How do customers typically respond?
- 19:36Joy Musacchio: Oh, that's different ways.
- 19:38Joy Musacchio: Some, some are, rude.
- 19:41Joy Musacchio: Not rude, but some are like, well, I don't understand that.
- 19:44Joy Musacchio: You know, that kind of thing.
