- 1:24Speaker 2: critic here at Nashville Movie Dispatch. Mister big shot himself
- 1:28Speaker 2: Brandon vic Brandon. How you doing today, my man?
- 1:32Speaker 3: Not too shabby. I came together so quickly, but thanks
- 1:38Speaker 3: for doing it because I think this will be a
- 1:40Speaker 3: fun one. And Spider Man was in the studio earlier.
- 1:44Speaker 2: He was, Yeah, people can't see the recording, it's just
- 1:48Speaker 2: audio only.
- 1:49Speaker 3: But but you captured it.
- 1:50Speaker 2: I got a photo. I got a photo that I
- 1:52Speaker 2: posted on Twitter. Yeah, I understand. This last couple of
- 1:58Speaker 2: days has been a bit of a whirl. When for
- 2:00Speaker 2: you getting to see Brand New day ahead of its
- 2:05Speaker 2: release this weekend, what was that like?
- 2:08Speaker 4: What was the process like to get to that theater?
- 2:12Speaker 3: To put it in perspective, Marvel in general gave up
- 2:18Speaker 3: on the Nashville market I'd say at least two or
- 2:21Speaker 3: three years ago.
- 2:22Speaker 4: Did you did you ever hear why? Or did they
- 2:24Speaker 4: just like pack?
- 2:25Speaker 3: I think we're just too small. I think that we're
- 2:27Speaker 3: just we're just not that big of a market. So
- 2:29Speaker 3: everything is basically in Atlanta. That's the closest to that's
- 2:34Speaker 3: the closest to us. We were on a roll for
- 2:37Speaker 3: a while.
- 2:38Speaker 2: Did they let you guys know that, hey, there's a screening,
- 2:41Speaker 2: It's just that it's in Atlanta, you know.
- 2:44Speaker 3: I have gotten emails where it's like, hey, you've been invited,
- 2:47Speaker 3: and you're excited, and then you realize it's at some
- 2:49Speaker 3: plaza theater thing that's where that Atlanta Film Festival is.
- 2:53Speaker 3: And you're like, oh, like that it's not in Tennessee.
- 2:57Speaker 3: Uh yeah, And so I just tell you I think
- 3:02Speaker 3: Multiverse of Madness was the last.
- 3:05Speaker 2: One, which I believe was twenty twenty two. If I'm
- 3:09Speaker 2: not mistaken, that's probably right. I can Ever, when was
- 3:13Speaker 2: the Marvels?
- 3:15Speaker 3: Was the Marvels that November?
- 3:18Speaker 2: So Multiverse of Madness was indeed twenty twenty two. The
- 3:24Speaker 2: Marvels was twenty twenty three, ten twenty twenty three.
- 3:31Speaker 3: We may have gotten that one, but honestly, I just
- 3:34Speaker 3: know Multiverse of Madness. So anyway, it's been it's been
- 3:38Speaker 3: a while. The writing was on the wall that once
- 3:41Speaker 3: we kind of assumed we were going to get some
- 3:43Speaker 3: others and we didn't. We were like, oh, so we
- 3:47Speaker 3: get here in Nashville, part of the Music City Film
- 3:50Speaker 3: Creek Association. We get these emails and kind of tell
- 3:54Speaker 3: us what's coming up and if there's anything that's going
- 3:56Speaker 3: to be available or not. And the emails we have
- 3:59Speaker 3: been getting basically said there's no screenings in Nashville for it,
- 4:04Speaker 3: which I no one was surprised, and I think I
- 4:06Speaker 3: even know like a few of my a few of
- 4:11Speaker 3: my associates were had already gotten tickets for like Thursday,
- 4:16Speaker 3: because they just assumed they weren't going to do it.
- 4:19Speaker 3: And so lo and behold Friday afternoon, and I'm talking
- 4:24Speaker 3: like four thirty, five o'clock, five thirty maybe on a
- 4:28Speaker 3: Friday evening. Man, we get an email blast that comes
- 4:32Speaker 3: through that says, hey, you're invited. And it's not in Atlanta,
- 4:37Speaker 3: it's in Nashville. We don't know what theater yet.
- 4:41Speaker 4: Wow, we'll let you know, okay.
- 4:44Speaker 3: And there's the review embargo, there's the social embargo. There's
- 4:48Speaker 3: all these things which are pretty normal and especially for like,
- 4:51Speaker 3: you know, a big movie like this, so it's like cool.
- 4:54Speaker 3: So and obviously then we're going into the weekend. So
- 4:59Speaker 3: I on the Nashville Movie Dispatch chat talking about, well,
- 5:02Speaker 3: maybe do this and do that. And that's kind of
- 5:04Speaker 3: where the podcast thing came from, because so Brand New
- 5:08Speaker 3: Day is almost about five years since No Way Home,
- 5:12Speaker 3: and going back to Sam Raimis and Toby's Spider Man
- 5:18Speaker 3: Next Year is twenty five years since that's come out,
- 5:22Speaker 3: and we've gotten quite a few Spider Man in between.
- 5:26Speaker 3: So that's kind of how this came about, so to
- 5:29Speaker 3: actually go see the movie it it's probably about lunchtime
- 5:34Speaker 3: twelve twelve thirty. I don't know what theater it is,
- 5:37Speaker 3: even though we think it might be at here at
- 5:40Speaker 3: Opry Mills. So we do end up getting that confirmation
- 5:45Speaker 3: and it's like okay, cool, and then our our buddy
- 5:51Speaker 3: Sean that's part of Nationville movie dispatch got my hopes
- 5:55Speaker 3: up because there was a time missing for a screen
- 5:59Speaker 3: X showing.
- 6:00Speaker 4: Now what is screen.
- 6:01Speaker 3: Screen X is where they almost they have screens on
- 6:05Speaker 3: the sides where it's almost like you're watching the movie
- 6:09Speaker 3: and then like let's say Spider Man swinging from buildings
- 6:12Speaker 3: and stuff, you might see the buildings in the city
- 6:14Speaker 3: scapes and it's all like you're being surrounded by it.
- 6:17Speaker 4: Oh wow.
- 6:18Speaker 3: Now, if it's not necessarily filmed for it, it might
- 6:21Speaker 3: just be you know, red and blue colors and there's
- 6:24Speaker 3: nothing actually happening. I've only been to that once and
- 6:27Speaker 3: it was for a screening of Elvis Wow Butler movie. Yeah,
- 6:32Speaker 3: and besides the concert footage, I'm pretty sure it wasn't
- 6:36Speaker 3: even used. I was just so it's really hit or
- 6:40Speaker 3: miss with that. I believed Spider Man probably is awesome
- 6:45Speaker 3: in screen X. If you believe the posters, it says
- 6:48Speaker 3: it was filmed and screen filmed for screen X, but
- 6:52Speaker 3: we didn't get screen X. Let me go ahead and
- 6:54Speaker 3: stop all the excitement. It did not happen. They didn't
- 6:59Speaker 3: have a file for it. So anyway, we watched it
- 7:01Speaker 3: at a in just a regular old theater, which was fine.
- 7:04Speaker 3: We you know, we were, you know, hands to the sky,
- 7:08Speaker 3: just feeling blessed to see it.
- 7:09Speaker 2: I was about to say, they're just you're gonna take
- 7:11Speaker 2: whatever screen they give you and enjoy it. You're right,
- 7:14Speaker 2: enjoy your slot, peasants.
- 7:16Speaker 3: But for the first time ever, we were told so
- 7:21Speaker 3: the review embargo is already lifted, and the social media
- 7:26Speaker 3: embargo was at midnight. Now most of the time you
- 7:31Speaker 3: see that, and that just means you can't share any thoughts,
- 7:33Speaker 3: You can't send anything out until that social embargoes up.
- 7:37Speaker 3: Not that everyone follows it throughout the country, because there's
- 7:40Speaker 3: always assholes, but that's that's the gist. Yeah, But for
- 7:44Speaker 3: the first time we were told we couldn't even put
- 7:48Speaker 3: like that. We were there watching it, like I like
- 7:51Speaker 3: to do that now, watching thing. You could not post
- 7:55Speaker 3: that until midnight. You couldn't even let people know you
- 7:58Speaker 3: were seeing the movie, which I have no idea why,
- 8:02Speaker 3: because I'm like, there are other people posting, like literally
- 8:06Speaker 3: taking pictures of the screen and sending it. Not in Nashville,
- 8:09Speaker 3: but like I had already seen people or I even left.
- 8:13Speaker 3: So anyway, it was so that was crazy. So I
- 8:19Speaker 3: posted I think it was at six thirty or seven
- 8:22Speaker 3: this morning, that I was now watching this at some
- 8:23Speaker 3: point last night and posted it. Anyway, tell me to
- 8:28Speaker 3: make it fun. But yeah, I mean, I'm sure some
- 8:30Speaker 3: people sat up and waited until the clock struck midnight,
- 8:34Speaker 3: but so yeah, it was pretty wild, but it was.
- 8:38Speaker 3: It was fun. It was a real adrenaline rush because
- 8:41Speaker 3: there are a lot of people that were there to
- 8:42Speaker 3: see the Odyssey, of course, and people were like, what
- 8:46Speaker 3: are you going to see? And I'm like, go to hell,
- 8:49Speaker 3: I can't tell you. Don't touch me, don't talk to me.
- 8:52Speaker 3: So I was wearing in that situation, I was wearing
- 8:56Speaker 3: that same Spider Man mask. I didn't want to give
- 8:58Speaker 3: it away, but I didn't want people to think that,
- 9:00Speaker 3: you know, I didn't want to get in trouble.
- 9:03Speaker 2: I'm just thinking, hypothetically, if I were to ask someone
- 9:08Speaker 2: just being friendly at the bar at Aubrey Mills or
- 9:10Speaker 2: something like, hey, what are you here to see tonight?
- 9:14Speaker 2: One of the weirdest possible answers I could get back
- 9:17Speaker 2: would be I can't tell you.
- 9:19Speaker 3: Yeah, I actually can't. I'm not I'm not at liberty
- 9:23Speaker 3: to say so. But you know what, when in doubt,
- 9:26Speaker 3: I just say the invite.
- 9:28Speaker 4: There you go, you go.
- 9:29Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a great movie. Maybe they'll look it up.
- 9:32Speaker 2: That's a good That reminds me of like my wife
- 9:36Speaker 2: is in the music business, and anytime somebody like you
- 9:40Speaker 2: meet at the airport, they ask what you do for
- 9:44Speaker 2: a living, she tells them, oh, I'm a bartender or
- 9:47Speaker 2: something instead, because when people find out that you're in
- 9:51Speaker 2: the music business, they think that you're Everybody wants to
- 9:54Speaker 2: give you their demo.
- 9:55Speaker 4: So yeah, yeah, just remind.
- 9:57Speaker 3: People to give you, like their songbooks, just like the
- 10:00Speaker 3: good old days. Here's here's my.
- 10:01Speaker 2: Tape, yeah exactly. So just there to see the invite,
- 10:05Speaker 2: That's all it was.
- 10:07Speaker 3: What are you here to see? The invite? Yeah, I'm
- 10:09Speaker 3: gonna be saying that in December. What are you here
- 10:11Speaker 3: to see?
- 10:12Speaker 4: Uh?
- 10:12Speaker 3: The invite?
- 10:14Speaker 4: Yeah? Maybe here, but might still have a theatrical run.
- 10:18Speaker 3: By then, God of God bless it. Then it's gonna
- 10:20Speaker 3: win Oscars. About if it is still out in December the.
- 10:25Speaker 4: Next Titanic.
- 10:27Speaker 2: Yeah, oh God, you mentioned something in the the intro there,
- 10:32Speaker 2: And we will get to your thoughts on Spider Man
- 10:34Speaker 2: brand new day later on in the show.
- 10:36Speaker 4: But this kind of moment, that this moment in time, if.
- 10:41Speaker 2: You will, I think is significant for a couple of reasons,
- 10:44Speaker 2: and we'll get into both. For For one, you and
- 10:48Speaker 2: I and I mean we're not the only ones. But
- 10:51Speaker 2: like we've been kind of talking about the Marvel Cinematic
- 10:55Speaker 2: universe for I mean, at this point, it feels like
- 10:58Speaker 2: it's been like four or five years. How they haven't
- 11:02Speaker 2: really been able to get back on track and recapture
- 11:06Speaker 2: the magic of the Infinity saga that kind of kicked
- 11:10Speaker 2: this whole thing off for the first.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Ten years eleven years of its existence.
- 11:15Speaker 2: Ye, And last year was an interesting move by Marvel
- 11:20Speaker 2: to kind of slow down the production calendar, release a
- 11:24Speaker 2: little bit less.
- 11:25Speaker 3: And TV and TV and movies.
- 11:29Speaker 2: Yeah, and I feel like the quality over the last
- 11:33Speaker 2: year specifically has gotten a little bit better, but it
- 11:38Speaker 2: still doesn't seem to have generated the same buzz that
- 11:42Speaker 2: it used to. And I think the New Spider Man
- 11:46Speaker 2: movie with its significance kind of leading into Avengers Doomsday
- 11:50Speaker 2: later this year.
- 11:52Speaker 4: It makes it an important movie, and.
- 11:56Speaker 2: I'm kind of curious to hear your thoughts on it,
- 12:00Speaker 2: as Marvel is now. You know, we talked about the
- 12:03Speaker 2: Fantastic Four movie being a pretty good movie but didn't
- 12:07Speaker 2: really do the numbers at the box office that Marvel
- 12:10Speaker 2: had hoped it would. Is is Spider Man going back
- 12:15Speaker 2: to the to the well so to speak, with this
- 12:18Speaker 2: character enough to really inject a little juice into the
- 12:22Speaker 2: Marvel cinematic universe.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Short answer, Yes, okay, it does. There is a new
- 12:30Speaker 3: kind of energy now that you know, John Watts's trilogy
- 12:35Speaker 3: is over and now they're starting, you know, they're starting
- 12:38Speaker 3: fresh again with oh man, what's his name? Destined Daniel Cretin,
- 12:46Speaker 3: the guy that did shann Chi Yes, and he and
- 12:49Speaker 3: and he did a lot of like he did the
- 12:52Speaker 3: He directed the glass House short term twelve that got
- 12:56Speaker 3: pre Larsen going yes in the marvelse And I think
- 13:00Speaker 3: he directed a few episodes of wonder Man that you liked. Yeah,
- 13:04Speaker 3: I think he did some stuff with that, so I
- 13:07Speaker 3: think it needed a change. I think it's a welcome change,
- 13:10Speaker 3: and I think he does a great job doing it.
- 13:14Speaker 3: You know you're talking about where like I would agree
- 13:16Speaker 3: as far as quality, Like I like Thunderbolts, which I
- 13:19Speaker 3: guess now is the new Avengers and Fantastic Four. But
- 13:23Speaker 3: but but I also kind of liked it because they
- 13:26Speaker 3: were kind of almost like standalone films that sure there's
- 13:29Speaker 3: a thread through them, but like that multiverse shit got
- 13:31Speaker 3: two out of hand, two nuts. And now I saw
- 13:36Speaker 3: where Kevin Figi had said, like there is no Marvel
- 13:39Speaker 3: movie between Doomsday and Secret Wars. It's literally December to December.
- 13:44Speaker 3: There will be no Marvel movies. It's kind that's crazy,
- 13:49Speaker 3: But then it also kind of makes you wonder, like
- 13:53Speaker 3: what what would Doomsday do in order to do Secret Wars?
- 13:59Speaker 3: And then, and I don't know if you saw this,
- 14:01Speaker 3: because they had the big comic Con thing where Ryan
- 14:03Speaker 3: Gosling and David Johnson, Black Panther three and all this
- 14:05Speaker 3: other stuff, but Kevin Faigy basically said that the next
- 14:09Speaker 3: like they're kind of like whatever storylines are gonna be
- 14:11Speaker 3: wrapped up after Secret Wars and then it's gonna be
- 14:14Speaker 3: more of a straightforward story where audiences can easily follow along.
- 14:19Speaker 3: And I just thought that almost sounds insulting to the
- 14:22Speaker 3: audience because I think that's more of a Marvel issue
- 14:25Speaker 3: than it is the people watching it, Like, yeah, maybe
- 14:28Speaker 3: you don't do these sixteen different shows and somehow it's
- 14:31Speaker 3: linked in. And I saw where Tom Hindleston talked about
- 14:34Speaker 3: you should go back and watch Loki season two for Doomsday,
- 14:37Speaker 3: and I thought, I don't want to. I don't want
- 14:39Speaker 3: to go back and watch anything. I want to like this,
- 14:43Speaker 3: Like it's some puzzle that is impossible to put together,
- 14:46Speaker 3: and it's not even worth the time of putting it
- 14:50Speaker 3: together after you see some of these movies. So Doomsday
- 14:54Speaker 3: is its own thing. I'm not even I'm not even
- 14:56Speaker 3: so sure about that. But spider Man Brand New Day,
- 15:00Speaker 3: I think is the first time where I think there's
- 15:03Speaker 3: legit excitement. I think it's a it's a safe bet
- 15:08Speaker 3: m M as well, But I think it also has
- 15:12Speaker 3: the right people. You have Punisher and Hulk in there
- 15:14Speaker 3: to kind of mix it up, along with Sadie Sink,
- 15:17Speaker 3: who they're keeping a mystery on who she plays. If
- 15:21Speaker 3: you want to call it a mystery and then so
- 15:24Speaker 3: there's some things in there, and I think having a
- 15:26Speaker 3: different director take it on, which I Shane ch might
- 15:29Speaker 3: be one of like the last best MCU movies I saw.
- 15:34Speaker 2: I I really think that it is, and I need
- 15:38Speaker 2: a sequel. Yeah, I don't have the uh, I don't
- 15:41Speaker 2: have everything off off the top of.
- 15:43Speaker 4: My head, and I never even I never even saw
- 15:45Speaker 4: the Marvels. I might watch that. It's fine, just to
- 15:50Speaker 4: get back in the spirit.
- 15:52Speaker 3: I kind of feel like Brie Larson, Miss Marvel's kind
- 15:54Speaker 3: of been a bust. But yeah, maybe there's hope. It's
- 15:57Speaker 3: not so much as her casting, but the movies haven't
- 16:02Speaker 3: been that impressive. And then and part of it is
- 16:04Speaker 3: just having people show up. And then it's like, I
- 16:07Speaker 3: don't know, two and a half years later and they're
- 16:10Speaker 3: there again. It's it's it's very confusing. That's why, like
- 16:14Speaker 3: the Doomsday trailer, like show me Chris Evans and Thor
- 16:18Speaker 3: again and I don't know, it doesn't do it and
- 16:20Speaker 3: I guess a German Robert Downey Jr. I don't really care. Well,
- 16:24Speaker 3: I don't care.
- 16:25Speaker 4: Does it feel at all to you? Like Doomsday?
- 16:29Speaker 2: And Secret Wars represents Kevin Feigey and Marvel just trying
- 16:35Speaker 2: to get to the finish line on this this branch of.
- 16:41Speaker 3: I do, and I think that they and I think
- 16:43Speaker 3: that kind of goes to trying to bring back familiar
- 16:45Speaker 3: faces and backing up a buttload of cash just so
- 16:51Speaker 3: that maybe people will get brought back, and like it's
- 16:54Speaker 3: almost like they want you to remind you of the
- 16:56Speaker 3: good old days, but they can't deliver. Like it's all
- 17:00Speaker 3: almost like you can't live off that forever. And I
- 17:02Speaker 3: think Marvel has found that out. You can't live off
- 17:04Speaker 3: of that stuff that has had such a build up
- 17:07Speaker 3: and was and it was a remarkable payoff, but then
- 17:11Speaker 3: it's kind of like, oh, like, did you guys plan this?
- 17:14Speaker 3: And I don't know, I mean, maybe Jonathan Major's came.
- 17:17Speaker 3: I mean, maybe some other stuff screwed, screwed some things
- 17:20Speaker 3: over and I mean you know, I mean, not everything
- 17:23Speaker 3: has gone as planned and it is kind.
- 17:26Speaker 2: Of laid movie yeah, which Jonathan Major's issues, Yeah, yeah.
- 17:32Speaker 3: Which I did. There has been some talk where maybe
- 17:39Speaker 3: Marshall A. Lee was part of the problem, but I
- 17:43Speaker 3: don't know. I can also kind of see like, I mean,
- 17:46Speaker 3: how long do you want him to wait? But then
- 17:48Speaker 3: if he's making all these changes and maybe I'm I
- 17:51Speaker 3: don't know, I don't know, but either way, never came
- 17:55Speaker 3: to fruition, so that's gone, that's been canceled. So now
- 18:00Speaker 3: I do kind of like the idea of I kind
- 18:04Speaker 3: of feel like Black Panther is kind of like the
- 18:09Speaker 3: elite now. I mean, Guardians of the Galaxy's wrapped up.
- 18:13Speaker 3: Robert Unn's general that Ironman stuff is done, and I
- 18:16Speaker 3: mean he was talking about how like it's going to
- 18:18Speaker 3: be Black Panther three is going to be shot on film,
- 18:20Speaker 3: which I don't know if any Marvel movie has ever
- 18:22Speaker 3: been shot on film, but I guess that's what the
- 18:26Speaker 3: power of Coogler can do. So but I just don't
- 18:32Speaker 3: I like the idea of Ryan Gosling, Like I kind
- 18:34Speaker 3: of liked some of what of like them kind of
- 18:38Speaker 3: relying on some famous faces to push whatever story, which
- 18:42Speaker 3: apparently Ryan Gosling is the one who pitched this and
- 18:45Speaker 3: he has been wanting to do it for a while,
- 18:47Speaker 3: so you know, but you're not always going to have
- 18:49Speaker 3: an actor that maybe is actively trying to come up
- 18:52Speaker 3: with stuff, yeah, to bring to life. But but yeah,
- 18:58Speaker 3: I don't know, I just like I said, I just
- 19:00Speaker 3: like it's it's all nostalgia and that's not as fun,
- 19:05Speaker 3: and it's it's not even the casting. But it's like
- 19:08Speaker 3: some of these stories are just kind of like okay, cool,
- 19:11Speaker 3: and then it's done, like you're just done. And so
- 19:15Speaker 3: I don't know. And I know, like fantastic for a
- 19:18Speaker 3: doctor Doom. It can all bring it together, and I'm
- 19:20Speaker 3: sure it will, but I don't know. Man, I think
- 19:25Speaker 3: it's Heyday is past it. I think it's trying to
- 19:28Speaker 3: regain something that is not really possible. And it's not
- 19:34Speaker 3: even so much of whatever story, whatever casting, I don't
- 19:38Speaker 3: even think it matters. I think you everything kind of
- 19:42Speaker 3: wears out. It's welcome eventually. You can't always have success.
- 19:46Speaker 3: You can't always just make billions and billions of dollars.
- 19:49Speaker 3: And I think Marvel almost seemed invincible, but now it's not.
- 19:52Speaker 3: And now I think the craze is kind of calmed
- 19:54Speaker 3: down against like normal people who go outside and do
- 19:57Speaker 3: things and are married. So, uh, I'm excited. I think
- 20:03Speaker 3: people are really gonna enjoy Spider Man. Brand new Home,
- 20:06Speaker 3: brand new, brand new home, that's what I'm calling it,
- 20:10Speaker 3: because I love the Home series, but brand new day
- 20:13Speaker 3: and I'll kind of get into that later, but but
- 20:16Speaker 3: it still leads to uncertainty on this big Avengers thing
- 20:20Speaker 3: and Russo brothers. Who I mean, they haven't done anything
- 20:24Speaker 3: great and I mean I guess since endgame.
- 20:28Speaker 4: Yeah, and that's Uh, They've tried, They've put.
- 20:30Speaker 3: Stuff, they've tried, and they spent a ton of money trying.
- 20:33Speaker 4: They sure have, but it ain't it ain't been good.
- 20:36Speaker 3: So no, no, it hasn't worked out. And how they
- 20:39Speaker 3: got this deal, I guess is again nostalgia hoping they
- 20:43Speaker 3: can in a bottle. Again.
- 20:46Speaker 2: That's kind of where the whole thing feels like a
- 20:49Speaker 2: bit of a cash grab. It's like, critically speaking, you know,
- 20:53Speaker 2: these these films have kind of degraded in quality over
- 20:57Speaker 2: the last few years, uh until I want to be
- 21:01Speaker 2: fair to that proper movies from last year. So it's
- 21:05Speaker 2: almost like getting ahead of the problem all of the
- 21:10Speaker 2: feedback from the multiverse stuff, where you know, like I
- 21:15Speaker 2: go back to like my mother in law sitting down
- 21:18Speaker 2: and trying to watch like Doctor Strange and just being
- 21:20Speaker 2: like I can't keep up with all this, Like yeah,
- 21:23Speaker 2: all these people coming and going, the rules don't seem
- 21:26Speaker 2: to be making sense. I thought this person said, oh,
- 21:30Speaker 2: is John Krasinski's mister fantastic? Now, like all of this stuff,
- 21:34Speaker 2: I get it is kind of fun, but like to
- 21:37Speaker 2: the cat.
- 21:37Speaker 3: Fan service, it's just service and fun ideas that mean
- 21:43Speaker 3: nothing to the story at all.
- 21:45Speaker 2: All all of this stuff, like the Multiverse stuff, doesn't
- 21:49Speaker 2: go over the way that they thought it would, and
- 21:51Speaker 2: then eventually the impact is there's a little bit of
- 21:56Speaker 2: backlash from audiences and it results in on down The
- 22:00Speaker 2: people are tired of it, so they're not going to
- 22:02Speaker 2: see the Marvel movies as much as they were at
- 22:05Speaker 2: the height of the Infinity saga. And they're still making
- 22:08Speaker 2: a ton of money. It's not to say there's failures
- 22:11Speaker 2: or anything, but to that standard they are not meeting.
- 22:15Speaker 4: So the response seems to be.
- 22:17Speaker 2: Like, well, you know, let's go get Robert Downey Junior back,
- 22:21Speaker 2: let's make a splash, and he's going to be Doctor Doom.
- 22:24Speaker 2: The only problem I have with that is that I
- 22:27Speaker 2: just unless they've got our DJ for one of these
- 22:31Speaker 2: like ten movie contracts that they're notorious.
- 22:34Speaker 3: For, I think he's I think it's just for Doomsday
- 22:37Speaker 3: in Secret Wars.
- 22:38Speaker 2: So if that's the case, I think you're just gonna
- 22:41Speaker 2: You're just gonna use Doctor Doom for two movies and
- 22:44Speaker 2: then go on about your business and then we're done.
- 22:46Speaker 2: It kind of sucks because we're not getting to the
- 22:49Speaker 2: heart of this is a really good character that probably
- 22:53Speaker 2: deserves the Thanos level build that we got in the
- 22:56Speaker 2: early days of the MCU, but they couldn't do it
- 22:58Speaker 2: because they needed some powerful enough to take on the Avengers,
- 23:02Speaker 2: but also something splashy enough to get people to go
- 23:05Speaker 2: see those movies, to get people back in theaters.
- 23:08Speaker 4: Yeah, so that they could just get to the finish.
- 23:10Speaker 2: Line on this phase of the MCU, And that, to
- 23:13Speaker 2: me is what's frustrating, because I feel like they're gonna
- 23:16Speaker 2: waste a pretty good character.
- 23:18Speaker 3: Yeah. Oh, I think they just wanted a heavy hitter,
- 23:21Speaker 3: bring somebody that's recognizable to MCU, hot off an oscar
- 23:25Speaker 3: Win and one hundred million dollars, and they think that's
- 23:29Speaker 3: gonna fix it. And I don't. I personally don't think
- 23:31Speaker 3: it will. But I saw where Kevin Figi also after
- 23:34Speaker 3: that Comic Con, was talking about some of the criticisms
- 23:38Speaker 3: of kind of like the build up of Doctor Doom
- 23:41Speaker 3: and then just kind of like boom here and he yeah, well,
- 23:45Speaker 3: and he downplayed us like well, I mean people don't
- 23:47Speaker 3: really remember, like we only showed that nose like three times.
- 23:51Speaker 3: You just sitting on the crown or sitting on the
- 23:53Speaker 3: throne and then this and this, and I'm like, buddy,
- 23:55Speaker 3: don't bullshit us. Like there was talk about it. There
- 23:59Speaker 3: was an infinity Stones or Thanos was always a part
- 24:02Speaker 3: of the conversation, even if you didn't technically show him,
- 24:06Speaker 3: or Josh Brolin wasn't talking. Yeah, like he's like, I
- 24:10Speaker 3: get it, he's mister MCU and has every hat for
- 24:14Speaker 3: every fucking superhero. But don't don't compare Thanos to do
- 24:19Speaker 3: to doctor Doom because they ain't done it. Yeah, that's
- 24:22Speaker 3: just gas that's just gaslighting.
- 24:25Speaker 4: It is.
- 24:26Speaker 2: And but then you think about, okay, well let's set
- 24:30Speaker 2: Doom's day up with a spider Man movie, because I mean,
- 24:34Speaker 2: spider Man is one of those gateway superhero characters if
- 24:38Speaker 2: you will, It's like Superman like Batman, Like, yeah, people
- 24:41Speaker 2: are gonna go see that movie no matter what.
- 24:44Speaker 3: So that character is pretty much safe from yeah people,
- 24:48Speaker 3: just even if people didn't like certain ones, they're always
- 24:52Speaker 3: excited about the next one. I always sad about which
- 24:54Speaker 3: villain is there gonna be a new villain. It's just
- 24:56Speaker 3: one of It's just one of those characters.
- 24:59Speaker 2: So that's where this whole thing I come back to. Man,
- 25:03Speaker 2: it just kind of feels like they are correcting course
- 25:06Speaker 2: and they are just trying to get to the finish
- 25:08Speaker 2: line at these last two Avengers movies.
- 25:11Speaker 4: And yeah, my hope was.
- 25:14Speaker 2: You know, thinking like, okay, well, just because this is
- 25:17Speaker 2: the lead up to Doomsday, hopefully there's enough talent behind
- 25:22Speaker 2: the camera here and there's enough meat on the bone
- 25:26Speaker 2: that this can still be a pretty good movie.
- 25:29Speaker 3: So are you talking about Brand New Day?
- 25:31Speaker 4: Yeah? So that's I will tell you this.
- 25:36Speaker 3: There is nothing. There is nothing in Brand New Day
- 25:43Speaker 3: as far as I'm concerned, that gets you ready for Doomsday.
- 25:48Speaker 3: Besides that you saw a good MCU movie. There's nothing
- 25:52Speaker 3: else in there.
- 25:53Speaker 4: Well maybe that's enough too, and maybe maybe.
- 25:56Speaker 3: Maybe if anything, Tom Holland and his zims and Day
- 26:00Speaker 3: having a hell of a year.
- 26:01Speaker 4: So fair enough.
- 26:03Speaker 2: Well that's good to hear. That makes me feel better
- 26:05Speaker 2: about the commedy.
- 26:06Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, And like I said, we'll get into
- 26:08Speaker 3: it here in a little bit, because I know we'll
- 26:11Speaker 3: do our best. But I can't believe Spider Man will
- 26:13Speaker 3: be twenty five years since the first one that Sam
- 26:17Speaker 3: Raimi did with Toby Well, that was years ago.
- 26:21Speaker 2: The other thing that I wanted to mention that you
- 26:24Speaker 2: said in there in the opening moments of this podcast
- 26:28Speaker 2: is like twenty five years since two thousand and two,
- 26:32Speaker 2: and I I can still remember the excitement of that
- 26:39Speaker 2: first Spider Man movie because I mean, to our generation,
- 26:42Speaker 2: it hadn't been done justice before, and we're sitting there
- 26:45Speaker 2: watching all these Batman movies get made, and then the
- 26:50Speaker 2: X Men movies come out and it's like, Okay, Where's
- 26:54Speaker 2: Where's Spider Man? And then just the joy of it
- 26:59Speaker 2: being one of those films that like, you've got to
- 27:01Speaker 2: go to the theater, you gotta get your popcorn, go
- 27:04Speaker 2: with your friends. It is a cinematic event, and I
- 27:07Speaker 2: still remember being rewarded twenty five years later. I I
- 27:14Speaker 2: don't know that I feel the same about the movie
- 27:17Speaker 2: as I did back then, but I do think that
- 27:20Speaker 2: first Sam Raimi Spider Man holds up pretty well to
- 27:24Speaker 2: the testing.
- 27:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I agree, it's I remember it being a big deal.
- 27:29Speaker 3: It was first, was it May first, May second, something
- 27:34Speaker 3: like that. It was a. I mean beginning that's the
- 27:37Speaker 3: summer blockbuster, and the marketing was out was insane. Yeah,
- 27:43Speaker 3: and I still remember those blue and red gummies you
- 27:46Speaker 3: could buy, and those were you could get those. I
- 27:50Speaker 3: think in marjor April. It wasn't just when the movie
- 27:55Speaker 3: came out. Then they tried again within I think it
- 27:57Speaker 3: was with was it with Hulk the ang Leam? Yeah,
- 28:00Speaker 3: and you have those purple and green ones, but anyway,
- 28:03Speaker 3: they weren't the same, But but it was, it was.
- 28:05Speaker 3: It was such a big deal. And you know, I
- 28:07Speaker 3: have seen it, i'd say at least a few times,
- 28:10Speaker 3: and I I like it. I think it kind of
- 28:16Speaker 3: that that sort of was like it crawled so Tom
- 28:23Speaker 3: Holland could run, you.
- 28:24Speaker 4: Know what I mean, Yeah, for sure.
- 28:26Speaker 3: I mean it set a precedent on like, oh, this
- 28:30Speaker 3: is like the the special effects the CG I and
- 28:35Speaker 3: you know, and Sam Ramy is Sam Ramy, right, and
- 28:39Speaker 3: I and I've talked about Multiverse and Madness where he
- 28:41Speaker 3: kind of dipped into the MCU and I actually liked
- 28:44Speaker 3: it because it still had his personality in it, and
- 28:47Speaker 3: so does and sort of the Spider Man movies. I
- 28:49Speaker 3: think it gets lost by the time you get to
- 28:51Speaker 3: the third one. But yeah, but it but it kind
- 28:54Speaker 3: of plays it up more than what MCU goes for.
- 28:59Speaker 3: So it does seem like it kind of reminds me
- 29:04Speaker 3: the way Batman went when Joel Schumacher took over for
- 29:07Speaker 3: Batman Forever and Batman and Robin. It's very playful, but
- 29:11Speaker 3: it's also it is a lot of fun, and it
- 29:14Speaker 3: was it was groundbreaking in a lot of ways, not
- 29:18Speaker 3: just superhero movies, but the way that you could do
- 29:22Speaker 3: that in that form. Because honestly, if you look at that,
- 29:26Speaker 3: like like you said, like let's just say the X
- 29:28Speaker 3: Men movie, right that was two thousand, there is still
- 29:32Speaker 3: a pretty big gap on just overall entertainment and quality.
- 29:37Speaker 3: When you get to Sam Raimi's Spider Man. I mean,
- 29:40Speaker 3: it was done, it was done damn good for back
- 29:44Speaker 3: then and for you know, the story isn't like, you know,
- 29:48Speaker 3: just astounding it but it's fun and it's the first
- 29:53Speaker 3: time you've really seen him on the big screen. And
- 29:55Speaker 3: the fact that some of that just the web slinging
- 29:58Speaker 3: and stuff, I mean, is it's pretty it's pretty cool.
- 30:01Speaker 3: It's funny that I think they play high school students,
- 30:03Speaker 3: but you know, yeah, that is pre tend to be
- 30:05Speaker 3: a kid. I guess, even with your Tom maguire.
- 30:08Speaker 2: It did sort of become the standard bearer in my
- 30:12Speaker 2: opinion for the superhero movies of that era, which were
- 30:16Speaker 2: they did kind of air on the side of campy
- 30:20Speaker 2: and a little cartoonish, and to me, I think, you know,
- 30:24Speaker 2: it's fine, you called it playful. I think that's a
- 30:26Speaker 2: good word to describe it. It feels kind of like
- 30:30Speaker 2: watching a comic book. You're reading a comic book on
- 30:33Speaker 2: a gigantic screen in a theater, is what those movies
- 30:37Speaker 2: felt like to me. But Spider Man was the one
- 30:40Speaker 2: that kind of, I don't want to say, the attention
- 30:45Speaker 2: to detail just seemed a little more, a little more
- 30:48Speaker 2: prominent in that Spider Man movie, and it seemed to
- 30:52Speaker 2: have a little more heart than some of the other ones.
- 30:54Speaker 2: But when you think about the era of those X
- 30:57Speaker 2: Men movies and then Lee's Hulk and then the Daredevil
- 31:02Speaker 2: movie that came out, we got a couple of Fantastic
- 31:05Speaker 2: Four movies. There were obviously more X Men movies on
- 31:08Speaker 2: down the line. We got a Ghostwriter, a couple of movies,
- 31:12Speaker 2: we got the Thomas Jans Punisher is somewhere in there
- 31:17Speaker 2: as well, and to me kind of feels like what
- 31:21Speaker 2: I think the legacy. I think that Spider Man movie
- 31:26Speaker 2: will have the first one anyway, because I'm kind of
- 31:28Speaker 2: with you, like I haven't watched the second one or
- 31:31Speaker 2: third one in a few years, but I did recently
- 31:34Speaker 2: rewatch them and just kind of felt like, man, these
- 31:38Speaker 2: these kind of these feel a little thin compared to
- 31:42Speaker 2: the first one, but that first Spider Man movie is
- 31:45Speaker 2: kind of the best parts of all of those early
- 31:49Speaker 2: two thousand's era superhero genre films.
- 31:54Speaker 3: I agree. I think a lot of people would push
- 31:56Speaker 3: back because I know a lot of people love Spider
- 31:58Speaker 3: Man two. Yeah, and and and and I understand that,
- 32:03Speaker 3: and I think part of it is sort of like, well,
- 32:07Speaker 3: Spider Man two, I feel like was probably better made. Yeah,
- 32:11Speaker 3: I really liked Alfred Molinas doc oc. I thought that
- 32:14Speaker 3: he's probably one of the best villains that comic book
- 32:18Speaker 3: movies have had. There's some great action set pieces, obviously,
- 32:23Speaker 3: the train is a big one, or the subway like
- 32:26Speaker 3: comic so and I totally get that, but I also
- 32:31Speaker 3: think there's just something about seeing the first one done,
- 32:34Speaker 3: and also you want to have you want to have
- 32:38Speaker 3: a villain you want to have, like a superior villain
- 32:41Speaker 3: right out of the gate. You get Willem Dafoe and
- 32:44Speaker 3: get him as Green Goblin, And so I agree. I
- 32:50Speaker 3: do like Spider Man two and I really enjoyed. It's
- 32:56Speaker 3: rare that a sequel can kind of build on what
- 32:59Speaker 3: the first it's done, especially when it's so successful. But
- 33:02Speaker 3: I really think that story and they kind of found
- 33:06Speaker 3: that perfect villain and it it and again it's it's
- 33:11Speaker 3: an achievement and a lot of these special effects and
- 33:14Speaker 3: things that just weren't done, just hadn't been done before.
- 33:19Speaker 3: Now the third one sloppy, sloppy, that's a doozy.
- 33:24Speaker 4: That's a doozy going on.
- 33:26Speaker 3: First of all, again, Thomas ad and Church of sam Man.
- 33:29Speaker 3: First of all, I love it.
- 33:30Speaker 4: I love anything Thomas A.
- 33:32Speaker 3: Yeah, And I think there's a story. And Sam Raimi
- 33:35Speaker 3: has come out because he he wanted to do a
- 33:37Speaker 3: fourth one anyway, wasn't able to, and people still think
- 33:39Speaker 3: he should be able to.
- 33:40Speaker 2: And I mean, I guess, are you talking about the
- 33:43Speaker 2: one it was supposed to be John Malkovich Vulture.
- 33:47Speaker 3: I don't even know, but I but let me tell
- 33:50Speaker 3: you that's a great casting. First of all, I would
- 33:53Speaker 3: almost still see it even though someone would go on
- 33:56Speaker 3: to play Vulture. And it's been one of my favorite
- 33:58Speaker 3: Spider Man movies ever.
- 33:59Speaker 4: But that I think that rumored cast was insane.
- 34:04Speaker 3: It was John Malkovich as Vulture, but then there's somebody,
- 34:07Speaker 3: wasn't there another one? Another villain.
- 34:10Speaker 2: Ann Hathaway was supposed to be black Cat, which is
- 34:13Speaker 2: kind of funny. Oh okay, And Bruce Campbell was rumored
- 34:17Speaker 2: to be Mysterio.
- 34:19Speaker 3: Oh wow, Okay, that's funny that we would eventually see,
- 34:23Speaker 3: uh see Mysterio done. The only thing I know, and
- 34:29Speaker 3: it was recently said in some interview, but that Sam
- 34:34Speaker 3: Raimi didn't even want to have venom in this movie.
- 34:37Speaker 3: That I think the kind of execs pushed it on them. Yeah,
- 34:42Speaker 3: and I kind of that, you know. I mean, now
- 34:46Speaker 3: looking at it, it makes sense because they they they
- 34:50Speaker 3: did Venom dirty and I didn't even mind Toe for
- 34:53Speaker 3: Grace being venom, but I but I mean, doing all
- 34:57Speaker 3: that in one movie. Yeah, and he's not even like
- 35:01Speaker 3: he's sharing the screen with like Sam like it. It's
- 35:06Speaker 3: very It was just it was a letdown, but it
- 35:09Speaker 3: did give us the Dark Spider Man where he's dancing
- 35:12Speaker 3: on the street.
- 35:13Speaker 4: So where would we be without those?
- 35:15Speaker 3: Where would we be without it? But so I'm not
- 35:18Speaker 3: shocked that he couldn't get his fourth one made after that,
- 35:22Speaker 3: But they also I feel like kind of sabotaged him too,
- 35:25Speaker 3: because I don't think that's quite the story he wanted
- 35:28Speaker 3: he wanted to tell. And I'll be honest, I think
- 35:31Speaker 3: Tom Hardy's Venom movies are fun and he's Tom Hardy
- 35:35Speaker 3: as perfect as Venom. But Venom still hasn't gotten the
- 35:39Speaker 3: right treatment. And I don't know if that means that
- 35:42Speaker 3: like MCU has to do it. I don't know, but
- 35:45Speaker 3: I still think there's a lot with Venom that just
- 35:48Speaker 3: hasn't been done. But Tom Hardy's versions, his little trilogy
- 35:53Speaker 3: was was better than the Tofer Crisis short short attempt
- 36:00Speaker 3: at it.
- 36:01Speaker 4: I'd agree with that.
- 36:03Speaker 2: So years after the Sam Raimi trilogy, we get the
- 36:06Speaker 2: Andrew Garfield reboot. Yeah, I I dug the first one.
- 36:11Speaker 2: The second one with Jamie Fox's Electro not as not
- 36:15Speaker 2: as high on it, but I liked the first one,
- 36:18Speaker 2: and I generally speaking, I liked Andrew Garfield.
- 36:23Speaker 4: A spider Man.
- 36:24Speaker 3: Was that Dane de Hans Green Goblin too. Yes, that
- 36:28Speaker 3: was the second one though, right, yeah, because Lizard is
- 36:34Speaker 3: the first one, and it's played by I think his
- 36:36Speaker 3: name is Reese Efens. He's a very famous British actor.
- 36:39Speaker 3: I think a lot of people would know him from
- 36:40Speaker 3: notting Hill, like right out right.
- 36:42Speaker 4: Off the bat. But so Paul Giamatti's Rhino is something.
- 36:45Speaker 3: Oh yeah, he's at the beginning. Yeah, and he's in
- 36:47Speaker 3: like a Transformer thing. Yeah that's right now. See why
- 36:50Speaker 3: couldn't we have done We could have done more with
- 36:53Speaker 3: Paul and Rhino.
- 36:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 36:55Speaker 3: I I've never really had a pro problem with the
- 37:00Speaker 3: people they cast as Spider Man, but I do think
- 37:04Speaker 3: that his run, which he did too, it's almost just
- 37:08Speaker 3: kind of forgettable. I mean I think it. I think
- 37:11Speaker 3: it tried to. I think it gave them some dignity
- 37:16Speaker 3: by having them involved in No Way Home, but they
- 37:21Speaker 3: really were just they they It's funny because as I
- 37:24Speaker 3: was looking through all these films, it's like some are
- 37:29Speaker 3: either great, some you you like, there's a couple that
- 37:32Speaker 3: you want to forget, and then there's some that are
- 37:34Speaker 3: just forgettable. And I just feel like Garfield kind of
- 37:37Speaker 3: got the shit end of the deal. And I think
- 37:39Speaker 3: his are just forgettable. I just don't think there was
- 37:41Speaker 3: a lot put into it. I think by the time
- 37:45Speaker 3: he got to the second one, it clearly was was
- 37:48Speaker 3: not the same. And no matter what people felt, as
- 37:53Speaker 3: far as like Spider Man three, Sam Ramy's films were
- 37:58Speaker 3: still very much held. I mean it still are in
- 38:01Speaker 3: high regard so that I feel like, without I guess
- 38:06Speaker 3: the MCU and Disney's money, whatever would come next wouldn't
- 38:11Speaker 3: be the same. But it also didn't It wasn't nearly
- 38:15Speaker 3: as impressive as what you had seen years earlier.
- 38:19Speaker 2: I'm just looking. And Spider Man three was released in
- 38:23Speaker 2: two thousand and seven. Andrew Garfield's Amazing Spider Man was
- 38:28Speaker 2: twenty twelve. So you waited five whole years, yeah, spider Man.
- 38:33Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm with you. It's not they.
- 38:35Speaker 3: Waited five years to do brand new day. The fact
- 38:38Speaker 3: that they waited five years to do a whole new
- 38:40Speaker 3: recast in the brand new of the Amazing Spider Man
- 38:44Speaker 3: is I'm sure was a red flag.
- 38:48Speaker 4: Gotta make that money, though. Who is your favorite Spider Man?
- 38:53Speaker 3: I mean it's I mean it's probably Tom Holland, but
- 38:55Speaker 3: Tom Holland has also had the best backing has had
- 38:59Speaker 3: the best casting, so it's really not fair. I mean,
- 39:04Speaker 3: like I said, someone kind of had to break the mold,
- 39:06Speaker 3: and I think Sam and Toby did that. But Tom
- 39:09Speaker 3: Holland has the best of both worlds, honestly. Yeah, and
- 39:14Speaker 3: now with Brand New Day, he's done the most movies.
- 39:19Speaker 4: Yeah this bak.
- 39:21Speaker 3: He is the longest reigning one. So yeah, I feel bad.
- 39:25Speaker 3: I feel bad for old Garfield, but but I think
- 39:28Speaker 3: he kind of there's some redemption in No Way Home.
- 39:31Speaker 4: There were some all of them.
- 39:32Speaker 2: There were some rumors there for a while that each
- 39:35Speaker 2: Toby Maguire and Andrew Garfield would get like an MCU
- 39:39Speaker 2: set standalone film.
- 39:42Speaker 4: I don't think that's happening anymore.
- 39:44Speaker 2: I think that was back when it was like you've
- 39:46Speaker 2: got three Marvel shows and a movie every year.
- 39:48Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, I also don't want to see that, Like
- 39:51Speaker 3: I feel like Toby, you know, they all did their
- 39:53Speaker 3: thing and a lot of and listen, I'm a fan
- 39:56Speaker 3: of No Way Home, but I mean it's a nostalgia overload.
- 40:00Speaker 3: I like that they've worked it in and it's but
- 40:03Speaker 3: a lot of it is cool to either see some
- 40:06Speaker 3: old characters back with the fact that you see Willem
- 40:08Speaker 3: Dafoe and Alfred Molina is awesome. I feel like the
- 40:12Speaker 3: Electro is better. Yeah, Thomas Hayden Church is Sam Man
- 40:17Speaker 3: kind of again, there's some redemption in it. But I
- 40:21Speaker 3: do feel like, no, Wilm, that's all it was. Was
- 40:24Speaker 3: just trying to combine everything that has ever been put
- 40:28Speaker 3: on screen of Spider Man and tried to make it
- 40:30Speaker 3: a story, and it really wasn't a story. So I
- 40:34Speaker 3: totally get Brand New Day being a reset because it
- 40:37Speaker 3: needed to happen, the energy needed to need it to change.
- 40:42Speaker 2: Well, let's talk about Brand New Day then, And obviously
- 40:44Speaker 2: we've got to say no spoilers in this.
- 40:47Speaker 3: No, there won't be any spoilers. But also before we start,
- 40:49Speaker 3: I just want to say, and I don't want people
- 40:51Speaker 3: to think we forgot about it because we're mainly just
- 40:53Speaker 3: talking live action. But the Spider Verse to animated films,
- 40:58Speaker 3: they are fun nominal. If someone asked me the best,
- 41:02Speaker 3: they are probably the best Spider Man movies. But I
- 41:06Speaker 3: also give it that's a huge credit to the beauty
- 41:10Speaker 3: and power of animation. Yeah, but so I don't and
- 41:14Speaker 3: I can't wait till the third one. It might come
- 41:16Speaker 3: out when I'm seventy years old, but it'll be worth
- 41:19Speaker 3: the wait. So but yeah, so for brand New Home,
- 41:22Speaker 3: there's no spoilers. It's gonna be tough to kind of
- 41:24Speaker 3: talk about some some stuff because I just don't want
- 41:30Speaker 3: to give it away. But it also centers around like
- 41:32Speaker 3: it's the biggest piece of the movie. But like we said,
- 41:37Speaker 3: Destin Daniel Cretton did it. I really liked what he
- 41:39Speaker 3: did with it. I really do. I do think a
- 41:42Speaker 3: change needed to happen in the director's chair, and I
- 41:45Speaker 3: think he's the guy. I think he's the perfect guy
- 41:48Speaker 3: to do it. I know Tom Holland has a lot
- 41:50Speaker 3: more input these days. He basically even pushed back the
- 41:54Speaker 3: scheduling so we could do the Odyssey, So he's got
- 41:57Speaker 3: he's got some strings now as far as so let's
- 42:02Speaker 3: go with Let's talk about Tom first. I am this
- 42:09Speaker 3: is probably his best acting of the year.
- 42:12Speaker 4: Really well.
- 42:13Speaker 3: I find he's just I think he's really kind of
- 42:16Speaker 3: grown into his own and I think there there's a
- 42:19Speaker 3: there's definitely a confidence level in this one, and I
- 42:26Speaker 3: think it's because he's also gotten a little bit older
- 42:28Speaker 3: as well. But it shows and it plays really well
- 42:33Speaker 3: with where Spider Man is at this moment because if
- 42:37Speaker 3: for people that don't know, he basically had to make
- 42:39Speaker 3: the sacrifice where nobody remembers that Spider Man exists, but
- 42:44Speaker 3: no one remembers Peter Parker. So he's not friends with
- 42:47Speaker 3: Ned and MJ and christ Banner doesn't know who he is,
- 42:53Speaker 3: like the whole thing, right, Yeah, So, but but the
- 42:58Speaker 3: way he does it, and I obviously he's been so
- 43:03Speaker 3: involved that it's it's it's pretty effortless at this point
- 43:09Speaker 3: of what he's of what he's been able to do.
- 43:12Speaker 3: I think he's I think he's I mean, he's pretty
- 43:15Speaker 3: much just mastered sort of that physicality that's involved. But
- 43:21Speaker 3: this movie really kind of really gets into the psyche
- 43:27Speaker 3: of who he is, trying to find this balance of
- 43:33Speaker 3: Spider Man and Peter Parker and how do you cope
- 43:37Speaker 3: with it? How do you live with it? There's a
- 43:39Speaker 3: new reality that's kind of set in now, and so
- 43:45Speaker 3: he has he has a couple of really stellar emotional scenes,
- 43:50Speaker 3: most of them involve m J and I'm listen, call
- 43:55Speaker 3: me a sap, call me what you want. But when
- 43:57Speaker 3: some of those scenes between Peter and MJ and the
- 44:00Speaker 3: fact that they really are husband and wife. It just
- 44:03Speaker 3: hits harder. I can't help it. It just hits harder.
- 44:07Speaker 2: I don't I don't think anybody's going to fault you
- 44:09Speaker 2: for that. It is anything that can accentuate a story.
- 44:12Speaker 3: Yeah, maybe they got married only because of this movie
- 44:16Speaker 3: coming out, and they'll get divorced next year when after
- 44:18Speaker 3: it's made its billion dollars.
- 44:20Speaker 4: But maybe no.
- 44:21Speaker 3: He I really I was really impressed with him, and
- 44:28Speaker 3: he really gets to show, he gets to show kind
- 44:32Speaker 3: of there's a lot more depth and emotion in this
- 44:36Speaker 3: movie just in general, but obviously a lot of it
- 44:38Speaker 3: is centered around him. And you know, aunt May is gone.
- 44:43Speaker 3: That's that's very that's a very prominent part of this movie. Yeah,
- 44:49Speaker 3: even though you do get to see Marisaitome back as
- 44:52Speaker 3: aunt May, I remember one of the things and it
- 44:58Speaker 3: kind of leads to what it kind of goes into
- 45:00Speaker 3: what I was talking about with the more depth and
- 45:02Speaker 3: emotion that's involved in this one, is there's a there's
- 45:05Speaker 3: a real kind of hike immaturity in Brand New in
- 45:08Speaker 3: Brand New Day Now we haven't really seen before in
- 45:11Speaker 3: in in Holland's Peter Parker, and in Spider Man, and
- 45:16Speaker 3: and Obviously this has been in the in the trailer,
- 45:18Speaker 3: so this is not a spoiler, but you know, his
- 45:20Speaker 3: he you know, his body is going through some going
- 45:23Speaker 3: through some changes. Sure, but but and that's part of
- 45:28Speaker 3: really the story of trying to find that balance in
- 45:30Speaker 3: who you are and getting lost in it like eventually
- 45:34Speaker 3: are you are you Spider Man or are you Peter Parker?
- 45:40Speaker 3: And and it kind of comes down and that's where
- 45:43Speaker 3: there is that along with and I I've found myself
- 45:51Speaker 3: more engaged and more invested in those questions of who
- 45:57Speaker 3: he is and the relationship and friendship with MJ and Ned.
- 46:01Speaker 3: And it does deal with loneliness, It deals with loss
- 46:06Speaker 3: and being vulnerable, and I will say that I really
- 46:14Speaker 3: enjoyed that aspect of it because that's also the a
- 46:21Speaker 3: very significant connection to Sadie Sink's character. Okay, and it
- 46:25Speaker 3: and it plays really well and that in that space
- 46:32Speaker 3: very and what and what they're doing. It's the heart
- 46:38Speaker 3: of it is MJ. Ned and Peter and there's a
- 46:44Speaker 3: whole thing at the beginning where he's kind of it's
- 46:46Speaker 3: almost like life is passing him by, and the and
- 46:48Speaker 3: the whole thing as he lives for is just you know,
- 46:51Speaker 3: fighting crime and how do you how do you cope
- 46:57Speaker 3: with that? How how do you move on? Can you
- 47:01Speaker 3: move on? And you're also talking about just watching the
- 47:04Speaker 3: love of your life walk around and not have any
- 47:07Speaker 3: memories of you, I mean, and that's tough. And and
- 47:09Speaker 3: again that's what really to me is what kind of
- 47:13Speaker 3: hooks you in because I don't really remember there's been
- 47:18Speaker 3: there's been doses of it, but I don't really remember
- 47:21Speaker 3: a Spider Man movie really kind of diving into that
- 47:24Speaker 3: kind of kind of stuff, you know. And again it's heavier,
- 47:28Speaker 3: and it's and like I said, it's more, it's more, Uh,
- 47:32Speaker 3: it's more mature, But I will say it's I loved
- 47:38Speaker 3: that the Holk is in it. I love the I
- 47:41Speaker 3: love the the part he plays in the story. There's
- 47:46Speaker 3: also uh Frank Castle, John Barthol, which I know you're working.
- 47:51Speaker 3: He's a very popular guy right now. He's been in
- 47:53Speaker 3: the Addust year, he's in The Punisher was it one
- 47:56Speaker 3: last kill? I think? And then he's he's also in
- 47:59Speaker 3: the Bear because he did a whole little short with
- 48:02Speaker 3: the brother, yeah or the cousin, the cousin. So that's
- 48:09Speaker 3: a very popular year. And I know you're working on
- 48:10Speaker 3: something about him and so. But their banter is really good.
- 48:14Speaker 3: I want to say, I have not seen a whole
- 48:17Speaker 3: lot of The Punisher. I haven't seen the Marvel show.
- 48:20Speaker 3: I haven't watched One Last Kill. I've seen parts of it.
- 48:23Speaker 3: I really liked his role in this, and I understand
- 48:27Speaker 3: why he's a part of this Peter Parker journey. I
- 48:32Speaker 3: don't know if you know this, but I found out
- 48:35Speaker 3: during this press thing that they are I don't know where,
- 48:41Speaker 3: but they have known each other for a long time,
- 48:45Speaker 3: Tom Holland and John berthol And that they helped each
- 48:48Speaker 3: other with their audition tapes for Spider Man and The Punisher. Really,
- 48:54Speaker 3: I did not know that, and he was like I
- 48:57Speaker 3: Tom Holland was Tom, But I can't believe or both
- 48:59Speaker 3: sitting here today as these characters in the same movie
- 49:04Speaker 3: that is sold. So anyway, there's like I said, there
- 49:11Speaker 3: is a lot too. There's a lot that I really
- 49:16Speaker 3: There's some action, sorry, fantastic. There's quite a few fantastic
- 49:26Speaker 3: action sequences. I didn't really notice any of the m
- 49:29Speaker 3: c U c G I messes with with this, okay,
- 49:35Speaker 3: looked pretty clean. The action sequences where I thought were
- 49:39Speaker 3: really good. There is a there's a fighting sequence with
- 49:43Speaker 3: the whole that's really cool. I really enjoyed that. I'm
- 49:46Speaker 3: not gonna set the scene for anybody, but it's I
- 49:50Speaker 3: like that one. And uh Spider gets involved with a
- 49:53Speaker 3: battle with the hand and that's really uh well done.
- 50:00Speaker 3: And I will say destined Daniel. He there's a lot
- 50:07Speaker 3: of really nice creative camera work going on. Okay, it's
- 50:12Speaker 3: used in the fighting sequences. Sean and I were talking
- 50:15Speaker 3: about it last night briefly. But then there's also just
- 50:18Speaker 3: when he's like swinging through the air and there's a
- 50:20Speaker 3: lot of those kind of aerial shots and he does
- 50:24Speaker 3: it does a nice job capturing capturing a lot of
- 50:26Speaker 3: that that again, it kind of it just kind of
- 50:29Speaker 3: feels more. It's just a different kind of energy to it,
- 50:37Speaker 3: and it's a comp I mean, it's a compliment to that.
- 50:39Speaker 3: But you can tell that there's that it's different and
- 50:43Speaker 3: that we are approaching a new just just kind of
- 50:50Speaker 3: a new era and what and the kind of the
- 50:55Speaker 3: evolving of of Spider Man and the story and what
- 51:02Speaker 3: they might have in store on what. I don't know,
- 51:05Speaker 3: but it feels like it might be like a new trilogy.
- 51:10Speaker 2: Are are you comfortable allowed to say whether or not
- 51:16Speaker 2: people should stay for mid credits and end credit scenes.
- 51:20Speaker 3: Yeah, there is no mid credit scene. There's just one
- 51:23Speaker 3: at the end. And I'll be honest, I'm not quite
- 51:25Speaker 3: sure even what it talks about. Okay, but I think
- 51:30Speaker 3: I do. I think I will just tell you this.
- 51:35Speaker 3: In the movie, there is a thing that is a
- 51:38Speaker 3: Spider Man tracker, and anyway that it is a part
- 51:42Speaker 3: of the end credit that hints at something.
- 51:46Speaker 4: Okay, so stick around the end credits.
- 51:49Speaker 3: Yes, And now I will say the thing that kind
- 51:53Speaker 3: of holds holds this thing back. And this is where
- 51:55Speaker 3: I have to be careful. There is a there's a
- 52:01Speaker 3: villain issue in this movie. It is I'm a little
- 52:08Speaker 3: disappointed because there have been glimpses and these things have
- 52:13Speaker 3: shown up in the trailers. I'm not giving a thing away.
- 52:15Speaker 3: But you see Scorpion, you see Tombstone. There's also another
- 52:19Speaker 3: surprise little villain and it's maybe two seconds long, but
- 52:23Speaker 3: I assume it's Rhino because he's crashing through a wall.
- 52:26Speaker 3: But that's it. I don't know who plays him. I
- 52:28Speaker 3: don't I don't even know if you see his face,
- 52:30Speaker 3: I have no idea, but I will tell you, if
- 52:33Speaker 3: you think that these have anything to do with this
- 52:35Speaker 3: overall story, you were wrong.
- 52:38Speaker 4: Okay, I do not.
- 52:39Speaker 3: As a matter of fact. The thing that they show
- 52:41Speaker 3: in the trailer of Tombstone, that's his scene. So Scorpion
- 52:48Speaker 3: gets the most, but there is a loose there's a
- 52:52Speaker 3: larger looming presence. And I will say, whatever kind of
- 52:59Speaker 3: twists this movie thinks it's doing, I'm gonna I have
- 53:06Speaker 3: a hard time believing that most people, when you go
- 53:09Speaker 3: in and watch it, you don't immediately pick up on it.
- 53:15Speaker 3: I'm not gonna say anything more, but I really did.
- 53:18Speaker 3: I really don't know why it has been so secretive
- 53:24Speaker 3: and and and Marvel and Disney have gone so far
- 53:28Speaker 3: out of their way not to address certain stuff, because honestly,
- 53:33Speaker 3: I really don't think it matters when you're actually watching
- 53:36Speaker 3: the movie. I will I will leave it at that.
- 53:40Speaker 3: I'm I was disappointed because there is no big, like,
- 53:46Speaker 3: kind of cool villain. And I feel like in Batman
- 53:49Speaker 3: and we're talking about in Superman spider Man, that's kind
- 53:52Speaker 3: of what you want, and you don't get that here.
- 53:54Speaker 3: It's all it's all just centered around Sadie's character. And
- 54:00Speaker 3: I honestly don't think that this movie, and listen it's over,
- 54:04Speaker 3: you start to feel its run time towards the end,
- 54:06Speaker 3: this is almost two and a half hours long. I
- 54:08Speaker 3: don't think of I don't think we've mentioned that, but
- 54:11Speaker 3: I really just don't think that it needs to be
- 54:16Speaker 3: that long. But I also wish that it didn't completely
- 54:19Speaker 3: I just wish Sadie Sink's thing didn't totally engulf everything
- 54:23Speaker 3: else that I feel like it kind of takes away
- 54:25Speaker 3: from other things that people have enjoyed in Tom Holland
- 54:28Speaker 3: Spider Man movies. But again, the connection that she has
- 54:35Speaker 3: with Peter I did. I did enjoy, so, I mean
- 54:39Speaker 3: it's meaningful. I just kind of wish it was it
- 54:42Speaker 3: was done a different way and it was paced, and
- 54:46Speaker 3: I wish it was paced differently.
- 54:48Speaker 4: Where did you, oh, go ahead, finish your thoughts?
- 54:50Speaker 3: Well, I was just gonna say, well, but in the end,
- 54:53Speaker 3: I think people will find this satisfying. I did. I
- 54:56Speaker 3: think it's I think it's a very solid Spider Man movie.
- 55:00Speaker 3: Like I said, it has it has Honestly, it's nice
- 55:05Speaker 3: to see where it when it needs that sincerity, it's there.
- 55:12Speaker 3: There are the scenes that do involve it may are
- 55:16Speaker 3: fantastic and their very heartfelt. It also has by the end,
- 55:22Speaker 3: and I think I told you this a day or
- 55:25Speaker 3: two ago. You realize why it's called brand new day
- 55:28Speaker 3: at the end, and I I really was sort of
- 55:35Speaker 3: kind of caught up in just how hopeful it was
- 55:40Speaker 3: and so and also there's a part and Holks in
- 55:44Speaker 3: there and Punisher and like all of their like all
- 55:48Speaker 3: of these like special people also share in this thing
- 55:53Speaker 3: of like of recognizing the pain rather than just like
- 56:00Speaker 3: totally just becoming unhinged and full of rage. Like there's
- 56:03Speaker 3: so many similarities and connections with them that it makes
- 56:07Speaker 3: sense why everyone's there. I just think time. I think
- 56:11Speaker 3: time could be invested in other places and in other ways.
- 56:15Speaker 2: Uh.
- 56:15Speaker 3: But again, I I think a lot of people. Most
- 56:18Speaker 3: people will walk away and say that this is this
- 56:22Speaker 3: is certainly a good Spider Man movie. Is it the
- 56:24Speaker 3: best of all time? No? But I do I do
- 56:29Speaker 3: think it's it's very much. Uh, it was a it
- 56:32Speaker 3: was worth the wait.
- 56:34Speaker 4: Where did you land on it? Star?
- 56:36Speaker 3: Rating wise, I'm given a Vixfix rating of three and
- 56:39Speaker 3: a half out of five. Okay, yeah, and again, I've
- 56:43Speaker 3: seen people four, I've seen people have five. I just think, again,
- 56:47Speaker 3: there's some things that kind of hold it back, but
- 56:50Speaker 3: but I really enjoyed this kind of loneliness and lost connection.
- 56:56Speaker 3: I really like the addition of Punisher and Hulk. I
- 56:58Speaker 3: think it, I think it works really well. But it
- 57:01Speaker 3: is it's Peter MJ and Ned that get that really
- 57:05Speaker 3: kind of have you just I don't know, You're you're
- 57:10Speaker 3: just kind of stuck in that in that like, gosh,
- 57:14Speaker 3: what the sacrifice that was made and look what's happened.
- 57:20Speaker 3: And I don't know, I mean just living without your
- 57:23Speaker 3: the woman you love and your best friend. That's that's
- 57:26Speaker 3: pretty heartbreaking. And they really work with that. So that's
- 57:30Speaker 3: what I was drawn to the most.
- 57:33Speaker 2: Well, I think that's gonna do it for us, Brandon,
- 57:36Speaker 2: unless you have any parting thoughts as we get out
- 57:38Speaker 2: of here today.
- 57:38Speaker 3: No, I don't think I have to tell people to
- 57:40Speaker 3: see this.
- 57:41Speaker 4: I think I think.
- 57:42Speaker 3: That's pretty much. I think that's that's already. I think
