Latest / Drawn of History / Matt Rife on When Crowd Work Goes Wrong(M4A_128K)
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: You got kind of pinned with being the crowd work.
- 0:04Speaker 1: Your crowd work started to kind of take clips and
- 0:07Speaker 1: make it so that a lot of people were doing
- 0:09Speaker 1: crowd work. Do you feel like that's kind of a
- 0:10Speaker 1: true statement?
- 0:11Speaker 2: Yeah, I would say so. I mean, I definitely wasn't
- 0:13Speaker 2: the first one to do it. Schultz was a big
- 0:16Speaker 2: inspiration for me doing that. His crowd work's fucking... He's
- 0:20Speaker 2: amazing at that.
- 0:20Speaker 3: He's so good at it.
- 0:21Speaker 2: He was doing this thing that even made me want
- 0:23Speaker 2: to start doing any of my YouTube specials where he
- 0:25Speaker 2: was doing like a new minute every single week that
- 0:27Speaker 2: you would post a new clip every single, that's 52
- 0:29Speaker 2: minutes of material throughout, throughout the year. Uh, it was genius.
- 0:32Speaker 2: And he was sprinkled crowd working with that as well. And, um,
- 0:35Speaker 2: I was just like, Holy shit. I see the importance
- 0:37Speaker 2: of content in this, in the standup market, which I
- 0:40Speaker 2: don't think anybody had really been paying attention to. Like,
- 0:43Speaker 2: You put out specials, but that's what once every year,
- 0:45Speaker 2: maybe once every two years.
- 0:46Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 0:47Speaker 2: But we weren't like comedians weren't being in people's faces
- 0:50Speaker 2: all day. Like you weren't prominent on a platform and
- 0:53Speaker 2: people kind of couldn't avoid you, which I think is.
- 0:56Speaker 2: you know, prominent for the algorithm.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Well, especially if you don't have, if you're not, if
- 1:00Speaker 1: you don't have a regular podcast, like with podcasting you
- 1:02Speaker 1: do because you just have clips, right?
- 1:03Speaker 3: Of course.
- 1:04Speaker 1: But if not, yeah, it's hard to find like what
- 1:06Speaker 1: is that thing without doing a sketch or like planning
- 1:09Speaker 1: this big thing.
- 1:10Speaker 2: And that's why I like doing the bit of crowd
- 1:12Speaker 2: work that I do in my show because like it's
- 1:14Speaker 2: new and refreshing, right? Like it's, I'm not doing the
- 1:16Speaker 2: same stories and jokes night after night after night that
- 1:18Speaker 2: you have to deliver like it's your first time ever
- 1:20Speaker 2: saying it. Like this is something so new and spontaneous
- 1:23Speaker 2: that I can post online. It's not burning any of
- 1:25Speaker 2: my material.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, I saw the one where you saw one
- 1:28Speaker 1: of your teachers. Was that one of yours?
- 1:30Speaker 3: My teacher? Did you have a teacher that came? No,
- 1:32Speaker 3: I think that was Trevor Wallace. Oh, that was Trevor Wallace.
- 1:34Speaker 3: I think his teacher came. Sorry, dude. It's okay. It's fine.
- 1:38Speaker 3: Wrap this up? Yeah. I'm fucking with you, man. I
- 1:41Speaker 3: was like, yeah, we can. I'm just kidding, man. That's okay, dude. Sorry, damn.
- 1:46Speaker 3: Fucking Trevor, dude. No, I'm not going anywhere, man.
- 1:48Speaker 1: Trevor impersonated you, though, I think. It felt like he
- 1:51Speaker 1: was trying to steal your shit. No, no.
- 1:54Speaker 3: I'm just joking. I'm just fucking joking with Trevor. He
- 1:56Speaker 3: would never do that. He's the nicest guy. I love it.
- 2:00Speaker 3: He's very, very nice. I don't know if there's... He
- 2:02Speaker 3: is so nice, dude.
- 2:05Speaker 1: But did it ever feel like then you had to
- 2:08Speaker 1: be the crowd work? Like you had to do that? Yeah,
- 2:11Speaker 1: there's a little bit of that.
- 2:12Speaker 2: I talked to Adam Ray about this recently, too, because
- 2:14Speaker 2: he's gotten so prominent with his characters that he does,
- 2:16Speaker 2: with Dr. Phil and Biden and everything.
- 2:18Speaker 3: We stepped into that and it's unbelievable. Genius, by the way.
- 2:21Speaker 3: It's such a specific lane that nobody else has been doing. Nobody.
- 2:25Speaker 2: I asked him, I was like, do you find people
- 2:26Speaker 2: coming to your show and just wanting the characters? And
- 2:29Speaker 2: he was like, all the time. Like sometimes I'll be
- 2:32Speaker 2: in the middle of a story and somebody will be like,
- 2:33Speaker 2: do crowd work. And I'm like, I'm going to fucking
- 2:35Speaker 2: get to it if I feel like it.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:37Speaker 3: It's not, that's not all this is. Like I'm a
- 2:40Speaker 3: goddamn jukebox.
- 2:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:41Speaker 3: It's crazy, man. But I mean, I do it because
- 2:43Speaker 3: I enjoy it, you know?
- 2:45Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 2:45Speaker 3: That's like when I was in like, when I was
- 2:47Speaker 3: like doing those wiener pills, it's like, get an erection.
- 2:50Speaker 3: And you're like, I'm trying, man. Give me a few minutes.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Let me warm them up a little bit. Yeah, dude.
- 2:57Speaker 1: Let me nibble off a freaking chunk of my roommate's
- 3:00Speaker 1: wiener pill. At an angle so he won't notice it's missing,
- 3:04Speaker 1: you freak. There are only freaking five milligrams.
- 3:08Speaker 3: Tablets. Do you ever, when you're touring, do you ever
- 3:10Speaker 3: do any crowd work at all? I do some of
- 3:13Speaker 3: it more often now, and I really like it. It's
- 3:15Speaker 3: just fun.
- 3:16Speaker 2: It's just something silly and spontaneous. It gets a bad
- 3:19Speaker 2: rap for people being like, oh, you're just doing it
- 3:21Speaker 2: because you don't have the material. That's such a hack
- 3:24Speaker 2: response to have to it. By what means does that
- 3:27Speaker 2: mean that?
- 3:28Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, like we were shooting this thing in Lexington
- 3:31Speaker 1: a few weeks ago and somebody yelled out, AIDS, right
- 3:34Speaker 1: in the middle of the show.
- 3:35Speaker 3: And it was just like, it was a woman too. Jesus.
- 3:38Speaker 3: And usually AIDS is more of a guy's thing or whatever.
- 3:43Speaker 3: And what are you going to not acknowledge it? I know, dude.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I was like, oh, that's how bad things have gotten.
- 3:47Speaker 1: It's like people are just yelling AIDS out.
- 3:50Speaker 2: Dude, that's the other hard thing as well is like
- 3:52Speaker 2: venue wise now, the smaller venue I do, the more
- 3:55Speaker 2: people yell out because they want to be the person
- 3:57Speaker 2: that like gets talked to.
- 3:58Speaker 3: Like they want to be the next clip. I'm like,
- 4:00Speaker 3: it doesn't work like that.
- 4:01Speaker 2: It's usually the least assuming person you talk to is
- 4:03Speaker 2: probably like you're going to get the best shit out
- 4:04Speaker 2: of it. It's not like the pick me person in
- 4:07Speaker 2: the back.
- 4:07Speaker 3: That's true, dude. It's always like that.
- 4:09Speaker 2: A comedy club is like so intimate. We're all kind
- 4:11Speaker 2: of feel like we're hanging out that in like a
- 4:12Speaker 2: living room to where it's nobody really wants to be
- 4:14Speaker 2: like the dickhead to interrupts. Like that's kind of perfect.
- 4:17Speaker 2: And an arena is so big that like you, I
- 4:19Speaker 2: think they assume they, you can't hear them. So they're
- 4:21Speaker 2: not going to waste yelling out. But like anywhere in
- 4:23Speaker 2: the middle ground, like a theater, people are like, I
- 4:25Speaker 2: know he'll fucking hear me. Yeah.
- 4:27Speaker 3: We yell some wild shit.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Yeah, dude. I think it's like there is this weird
- 4:33Speaker 1: thing where you yell because you kind of want to
- 4:34Speaker 1: be heard, but you do not want to be called on.
- 4:36Speaker 1: There's some of that energy, too, for some people.
- 4:38Speaker 3: Oh, of course. Like you want to be a part
- 4:39Speaker 3: of it, but you don't want to be a part
- 4:41Speaker 3: of it. Oh, I love the purse.
- 4:41Speaker 2: I love like the like the wife brought her husband
- 4:44Speaker 2: and the husband didn't want to sit up front.
- 4:45Speaker 3: He's like, well, what if he talks to me? And
- 4:47Speaker 3: the wife's like, it's not all about you, Ron. You
- 4:49Speaker 3: know what I mean?
- 4:49Speaker 2: And then you end up talking to that guy. He's like,
- 4:51Speaker 2: this is my fucking worst nightmare. The wife's loving it.
- 4:53Speaker 2: I love that dynamic.
- 4:55Speaker 1: Has it ever backfired? Take me on one that backfired.
- 4:58Speaker 1: Have there been one that backfired? Because when you open
- 5:00Speaker 1: it up to the crowd, that's another thing. Suddenly 40 people,
- 5:04Speaker 1: they want to offer a suggestion.
- 5:06Speaker 2: It's very hard to direct a room full of people
- 5:09Speaker 2: who are like, okay, now it's my turn. That does
- 5:12Speaker 2: happen quite often. Usually I'm pretty good at shutting it
- 5:14Speaker 2: down and everybody can kind of be cordial, but it happens.
- 5:17Speaker 2: But you also get duds, you know what I mean?
- 5:20Speaker 2: You interview people. You know what it's like to talk
- 5:22Speaker 2: to somebody who you can't hold a conversation with. So,
- 5:24Speaker 2: I mean, that happens all the time. I'm not going
- 5:26Speaker 2: to post that clip, obviously. So, yeah, it's not magic
- 5:28Speaker 2: every time. But when you do get it, it's such
- 5:30Speaker 2: a fun feeling to have that moment right then, right
- 5:33Speaker 2: there with people.
- 5:34Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, one time there was a guy and he
- 5:36Speaker 1: had a wife or girlfriend, whoever it was, had the craziest, like, tits, right?
- 5:45Speaker 3: I love you couldn't think of tits, okay?
- 5:48Speaker 1: And they were so crazy, I couldn't even... It was
- 5:52Speaker 1: hard to categorize them. They were so insane.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Onomatopoeias. Yeah, he's just boom.
- 5:56Speaker 2: Uh-huh.
- 5:57Speaker 3: Bang, you know? Just like some real, just onomatopoeias on him.
- 6:02Speaker 1: Okay, okay.
- 6:02Speaker 3: Just like some damn fucking, just some milk tonsils, you know?
- 6:06Speaker 3: Just some.
- 6:07Speaker 1: Like L5S, none. Like you have no cartilage left from
- 6:10Speaker 1: holding those up. They were just, yeah, they were, you
- 6:13Speaker 1: could just feel like one of, you could feel one
- 6:17Speaker 1: of her vertebrae having trouble.
- 6:19Speaker 3: God damn. Yeah, you couldn't feel it, dude. Them Hindenburgs. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:25Speaker 3: She had them damn blimps and front blimps. Front blimps.
- 6:29Speaker 3: So anyway, dude, but they were crazy as fucking tits.
- 6:31Speaker 1: And she, you, and... The guy's like, I said, oh,
- 6:35Speaker 1: what do you do? He's like, you know, I stock
- 6:37Speaker 1: vending machines, you know? And I was like, and what
- 6:39Speaker 1: do you guys put in them? And he's like, muscle milk,
- 6:41Speaker 1: you know?
- 6:42Speaker 3: God damn.
- 6:43Speaker 1: And he says muscle milk, but then you see where
- 6:45Speaker 1: you think he's getting the milk from. His wife's just
- 6:47Speaker 1: sitting there all quiet with the craziest tits, like acting
- 6:51Speaker 1: like she doesn't have crazy tits or whatever.
- 6:53Speaker 2: Oh, of course.
- 6:53Speaker 1: And she was wearing a little bitty hat. You ever
- 6:55Speaker 1: see somebody who like pins a hat on their hair
- 6:57Speaker 1: and acts like it's a real hat?
- 6:58Speaker 3: It's like a brooch. Yeah, of course. Yeah, it's a
- 7:01Speaker 3: fucking brooch. Yeah. It's a little, it's like Toy Story ass. Like, bitch,
- 7:06Speaker 3: what are we talking about? And did you address them?
- 7:08Speaker 3: Did you address the titties?
- 7:09Speaker 1: Yeah, I said, well, where are you guys getting the
- 7:11Speaker 1: milk from, right? And that was just, and dude, there
- 7:15Speaker 1: was nothing else through the rest of the night that
- 7:17Speaker 1: was like, there's just something about that thing that's in
- 7:21Speaker 1: the moment.
- 7:22Speaker 3: And it was just simple. There was nothing I really
- 7:24Speaker 3: had to do.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Of course.
- 7:25Speaker 3: Sometimes it just presents itself. Bro, I was in Philly.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Yeah, this was in Philly, and there's a guy sitting
- 7:32Speaker 2: front row. He's got these slack pants on and just
- 7:36Speaker 2: had the most amount of dick sitting in the front
- 7:40Speaker 2: of his pants.
- 7:41Speaker 3: Like a conglomerate? Yeah, man.
- 7:43Speaker 1: Like a seven-dick pileup right in his own pants?
- 7:45Speaker 3: He melted eight or nine dicks on his dick. Oh, wow.
- 7:49Speaker 3: It was so prominent.
- 7:50Speaker 2: It stopped me in the middle of a story, and
- 7:52Speaker 2: I was like, I took the camera off the cameraman's shoulder,
- 7:55Speaker 2: zoomed in on it, it looked like he shit the
- 7:58Speaker 2: front of his pants.
- 7:58Speaker 3: It was so much dick. It honestly ruined my night.
- 8:03Speaker 3: I was upset. I was insecure for the next 45 minutes. Yeah, dude. Oh,
- 8:06Speaker 3: when somebody shows up with that stepdad cock or whatever.
- 8:08Speaker 3: Stepdad cock is such a real thing.
- 8:10Speaker 2: As somebody who had a stepdad, it's such a real thing.
- 8:12Speaker 2: I was so mad I wasn't his for a few years, man.
- 8:16Speaker 3: I would have been afraid to come out of that thing, though.
- 8:19Speaker 1: That stepdad cock, dude, you can't. That's why he doesn't
- 8:22Speaker 1: have any kids, bro. A kid wouldn't make it out
- 8:24Speaker 1: of that thing, brother. This is it right here. Biggest
- 8:27Speaker 1: dick ever. Is this a video of it?
- 8:29Speaker 3: Uh, it's probably a video, yeah.
- 8:32Speaker 2: And put your fucking dick away.
- 8:34Speaker 3: Put your dick away. I know. Cameraman, don't zoom in.
- 8:38Speaker 3: You don't have to. I can fucking see it, dude.
- 8:41Speaker 3: He's smuggling.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Unbelievable.
- 8:44Speaker 3: Cameraman just like wouldn't get the shot of it. And
- 8:46Speaker 3: I was like, hold on. Why wouldn't he?
- 8:48Speaker 2: Sometimes they're like three inches away from somebody's face.
- 8:52Speaker 3: And I'm like, get out of there. You have a zoom.
- 8:55Speaker 2: Hold on.
- 8:55Speaker 3: It's tangled up in his dick. Hold on a second.
- 8:57Speaker 3: Hold on. Look at this fucking thing. You're moving the camera. Wow.
- 9:02Speaker 3: Look at that thing, man. Big bro got that front
- 9:05Speaker 3: yard doll, bro. Remember an alien when it's coming out
- 9:07Speaker 3: of her fucking stomach?
- 9:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:08Speaker 3: That's what it looks like. Wow.
- 9:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 9:12Speaker 2: Dude.
- 9:12Speaker 3: That's a lot, man. Turtleneck dick is just a different confidence.
- 9:16Speaker 3: And he's wearing a turtleneck, too?
- 9:17Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 9:18Speaker 1: No.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Yeah, man.
- 9:19Speaker 3: He knows what's up. That's insane. That's Christmas dick. If
- 9:24Speaker 3: you weren't a turtleneck. A holiday hog. Tight pants, brother. Yeah,
- 9:29Speaker 3: he knew. That's not comfortable. There's no way. Oh, no.
- 9:33Speaker 3: That's all tight, brother. I'm so glad my dick isn't
- 9:36Speaker 3: that big. Yeah. So glad about it. Yeah. Same, same.
- 9:41Speaker 2: But, yeah, man, you get some weird stuff like that.
- 9:46Speaker 3: You know what's so funny?
- 9:47Speaker 2: If you look at mom, Christina from Iowa is on
- 9:49Speaker 2: the top thing. She's actually more prominent than my own
- 9:52Speaker 2: mom in.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Most of these.
- 9:54Speaker 2: Really?
- 9:54Speaker 3: That's her right in the middle? Christina? Top right corner,
- 9:57Speaker 3: the blonde hair. And who was that? Your ex?
- 9:59Speaker 2: No. no, no, no. That was, God, arguably probably the
- 10:03Speaker 2: most famous crowd work thing was she's like this really
- 10:06Speaker 2: hot mom, actually grandma, who lives in Iowa. And I
- 10:09Speaker 2: met her on stage. She gave me like these cookies
- 10:11Speaker 2: and this like really sexual shirt and everything. And bro,
- 10:14Speaker 2: I was like 10 minutes into the show when this happened.
- 10:16Speaker 2: I did like an hour and 20 minutes just talking
- 10:18Speaker 2: to her. crazy crazy good time the entire time like
- 10:22Speaker 2: we were great chemistry great banter the crowd was fucking
- 10:25Speaker 2: loving it but at the time you can only post
- 10:27Speaker 2: a 10 minute clip online on like instagram and stuff
- 10:30Speaker 2: so i had to edit it all down to that
- 10:31Speaker 2: like the whole show was that which never happens by
- 10:34Speaker 2: the way like that sounds like i didn't have material
- 10:36Speaker 2: ready for the show but like it was just such
- 10:38Speaker 2: a really cool in the moment thing and what stupid
- 10:40Speaker 2: it's got over like i'm sure collectively over a couple
- 10:44Speaker 2: hundred million views dang.
- 10:45Speaker 3: Yeah really yeah it's awesome no way awesome Dude, that's
- 10:50Speaker 3: the best. Where in Iowa was that at? Des Moines,
- 10:52Speaker 3: the funny bone there.
- 10:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 10:54Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 10:55Speaker 3: I mean, sometimes crowd work is different every time. That's
- 10:58Speaker 3: the fun.
- 10:58Speaker 2: You don't know if you're going to talk to a
- 11:00Speaker 2: super hot mom or biggest dick you've ever seen or
- 11:03Speaker 2: somebody all crumpled up in the corner.
- 11:05Speaker 3: You don't know. Yeah, it is kind of great. Oh,
- 11:06Speaker 3: there she is right there.
- 11:07Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, it is great, dude. With crowd work, there's
- 11:10Speaker 1: something really special about it.
- 11:12Speaker 3: It's just real and in the moment, you know?
- 11:14Speaker 1: How do you get the, how do you get, your
- 11:17Speaker 1: cameraman now is you have a special cameraman who's like.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Sitting right there.
- 11:22Speaker 2: Kyle. He gets all of it.
- 11:23Speaker 3: You do it all, Kyle? Mm-hmm.
- 11:24Speaker 2: What the heck?
- 11:25Speaker 3: He does all the crowd work stuff. Oh my gosh.
- 11:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 11:27Speaker 3: Then we do a little collaborative editing system together. Yeah,
- 11:31Speaker 3: he shoots all of it.
- 11:32Speaker 2: This was, man, the comedy clubs, that feels like a
- 11:34Speaker 2: lifetime ago. This is probably three and a half years ago, maybe,
- 11:37Speaker 2: something like that.
- 11:38Speaker 3: Wow. Maybe. That feels like a different lifetime ago.
