Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Craig Way alongside the producer Cameron Parker. Earlier in the program,
- 0:05Speaker 1: we visited with Andrew Monico, play by play voice of
- 0:09Speaker 1: the Texas A and m Maggie's I was in the
- 0:10Speaker 1: two o'clock hour. In the three o'clock hour, Greg Tepper,
- 0:13Speaker 1: managing enter Todave Campbell's Texas Football Magazine, talked to college
- 0:16Speaker 1: football and in high school football. If you missed any
- 0:19Speaker 1: of that, you can go to our podcast page at
- 0:21Speaker 1: AM thirteen under the Zone dot com.
- 0:22Speaker 2: You can do that.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Coming up, we'll hear from some long worn basketball players
- 0:28Speaker 1: and also some more from Vic Shaffer, Texas women's head coach.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Again.
- 0:33Speaker 1: They're playing in Southwest Florida, the Gulf Coast Showcase. That's
- 0:38Speaker 1: down in Estero, Florida, which is basically Fort Myers is
- 0:41Speaker 1: where it is. Texas played in and won that event
- 0:45Speaker 1: I think twenty eighteen. I went down there six years ago.
- 0:48Speaker 1: They won that event down there. I'll tell you this,
- 0:52Speaker 1: this is how I know it's twenty eighteen.
- 0:53Speaker 2: Cam.
- 0:55Speaker 1: They had a freshman on that team. Texas did red
- 0:58Speaker 1: shirting because of injury. You know who that freshman was.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Hit me with it, Sedona Prince. That's right from Liberty
- 1:07Speaker 1: Hill broke a leg. She ended up transferring Oregon and
- 1:10Speaker 1: now she's playing at TCU and playing well by the
- 1:13Speaker 1: way she and Haley van Lyth, who has been all
- 1:16Speaker 1: around in terms of her transfer. You know, it was
- 1:19Speaker 1: on that louisvill team.
- 1:20Speaker 3: They have a lot of college basketball now, but it
- 1:22Speaker 3: feels like is their entire starting five transfers.
- 1:25Speaker 2: They've got a lot.
- 1:26Speaker 1: The guy that came in has brought in a lot
- 1:28Speaker 1: of transfers, and their rank seventeenth in the country off
- 1:32Speaker 1: of that. College football notes. I don't know if you
- 1:36Speaker 1: heard it. Mac Brown was fired today by North Carolina.
- 1:40Speaker 1: The university announced he'll not return next season, and that
- 1:45Speaker 1: was one day after he declared his intentions to return.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Does that sound familiar to people?
- 1:50Speaker 3: Sounds like Mac?
- 1:51Speaker 2: Does that sound like twenty thirteen around here?
- 1:54Speaker 1: But it was Bubba Cunningham, the ad who informed back
- 1:57Speaker 1: of the decision. He will coach the team in the
- 2:01Speaker 1: regular season finale against North Carolina State on Saturday, but
- 2:07Speaker 1: a decision has not yet been made about whether he
- 2:09Speaker 1: will coach the Tar Hills in the bowl game. I
- 2:11Speaker 1: remember that's what he did here. He was not discharged
- 2:19Speaker 1: after the bowl game or before the final game of
- 2:24Speaker 1: the regular season against Baylor, which if Texas had won
- 2:26Speaker 1: that game, they would have won the Big Twelve, but
- 2:29Speaker 1: they didn't. And then he had mentioned at the banquet
- 2:33Speaker 1: he was going to be back, and then he wasn't
- 2:34Speaker 1: back as the athletic director Steve.
- 2:39Speaker 2: Patterson let him go.
- 2:40Speaker 1: And then then but he was allowed to coach their
- 2:45Speaker 1: final game, which was that Alamo Bowl lost to Oregon.
- 2:48Speaker 1: So he's going to coach the game against INNCIS State.
- 2:53Speaker 1: He doesn't, It's not yet known if he'll coach them
- 2:57Speaker 1: in the bowl game. His quote was, while this was
- 2:59Speaker 1: not the perfect time and way in which I imagine
- 3:01Speaker 1: going out, no time will ever be the perfect time.
- 3:04Speaker 2: I've spent sixteen seasons.
- 3:05Speaker 1: At North Carolina and will always cherish the memories and
- 3:09Speaker 1: relationships Sally and I have built while serving as head coach.
- 3:11Speaker 2: We had a chance to coach.
- 3:12Speaker 1: And men or some great young men, and we'll miss
- 3:14Speaker 1: have any opportunity to do that in the future. Moving forward,
- 3:17Speaker 1: my total focus is on helping these players and coaches
- 3:20Speaker 1: prepare for Saturday's game against NC State and give them
- 3:23Speaker 1: the best chance to win. We want to send these
- 3:25Speaker 1: seniors out right, and I hope our fans will show
- 3:29Speaker 1: up Saturday do the same. If you're wondering about Max
- 3:32Speaker 1: all time record one hundred and thirteen wins, seventy eight
- 3:35Speaker 1: losses and one time one thirteen to seventy eight, one
- 3:38Speaker 1: nine wins short of Nick Saban, by.
- 3:40Speaker 3: The way, so with him being out of college football
- 3:43Speaker 3: at twenty twenty five, and of course there could be
- 3:46Speaker 3: some coaches hired. The only coaches, the only active coaches
- 3:50Speaker 3: with a national championship, are going to be what Kirby's
- 3:54Speaker 3: smart and who else? It'll be Kirby And that's it,
- 4:01Speaker 3: because right, just Kirby the only one? Or was is
- 4:04Speaker 3: there another one?
- 4:05Speaker 2: I'm missing? I'm thinking thinking about this.
- 4:08Speaker 3: Because obviously Saban's retired. Oar Ball is in the NFL.
- 4:12Speaker 1: Yeah, gene Chiswick is not a head coach anymore, not
- 4:17Speaker 1: a head coach.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Jimbo obviously not a head coach, right, Mac Brown not
- 4:21Speaker 3: coaching anymore? Yeah after this next season? Yeah, oh Dabbo
- 4:27Speaker 3: so too. Yeah, there's two coaches. Yeah, isn't that crazy
- 4:29Speaker 3: to think about?
- 4:30Speaker 2: I know.
- 4:32Speaker 1: What and what it can do to you? What the
- 4:36Speaker 1: what the what the job certainly can do to you?
- 4:42Speaker 1: A couple of other things. Uh some other college football notes.
- 4:50Speaker 1: I mentioned Dian Sanders being upset about Travis Hunter not
- 4:52Speaker 1: being a Thorip Award finalist.
- 4:54Speaker 3: By the way, I'm just saying it right now in
- 4:56Speaker 3: the record h November twenty six, four or five pm
- 4:59Speaker 3: Central time, Deion Sanders in shore. Sanders will be with
- 5:03Speaker 3: the Oakland I'm sorry, the Las Vegas Raiders.
- 5:05Speaker 2: Ye, that'll happen. That seems to be a growing But
- 5:11Speaker 2: get this. Uh.
- 5:12Speaker 1: He did say that he expects Shadoor Sanders and Travis
- 5:16Speaker 1: Hunter both to play in a bowl game because, uh,
- 5:22Speaker 1: you know, it was hitting at the possibility they could
- 5:24Speaker 1: skip this recent trend of setting out a bowl game
- 5:27Speaker 1: to protect against the possibility of injury. He was asked
- 5:30Speaker 1: if Friday's game at home against Oklahoma State could be
- 5:34Speaker 1: the final time they suit up for Colorado because they
- 5:37Speaker 1: only have the slightest of mathematical chances to get into
- 5:40Speaker 1: the Bigtorald Championship game.
- 5:42Speaker 2: Is probably not gonna happen.
- 5:43Speaker 1: He said, no, it's not the last time you're going
- 5:45Speaker 1: to see them in a Buff's uniform. These two and
- 5:48Speaker 1: all the rest of the seniors have done a wonderful
- 5:49Speaker 1: job of getting us to where we are instilling so
- 5:52Speaker 1: much expectation in our fan base and expectation in ourselves.
- 5:56Speaker 1: So we're going to fight and try to go out
- 5:57Speaker 1: there and kick some butt in this thing on the
- 5:59Speaker 1: right note, and we are going to a bowl game
- 6:02Speaker 1: in this thing on the right note, because our fans
- 6:04Speaker 1: deserve the absolute best.
- 6:06Speaker 2: Love that so love him. Yeah, So.
- 6:11Speaker 1: That's that's where he stands. That'll be interesting if Travis
- 6:13Speaker 1: Hunter says, yeah, I don't think so, or if you know,
- 6:16Speaker 1: worst case scenario to get injured in that game. Yes, right,
- 6:20Speaker 1: I think Travis Hunter. You know, I'm seeing a lot
- 6:22Speaker 1: of mock drafts.
- 6:23Speaker 3: Could be the number one overall pick in should or
- 6:27Speaker 3: probably gonna be a first round draft pick. Now. Of course,
- 6:29Speaker 3: if his dad does end up taking a head coaching
- 6:32Speaker 3: spot in the NFL next season, what happens with them?
- 6:36Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 6:36Speaker 3: I wonder will teams be afraid to draft him? I'll
- 6:39Speaker 3: h Brownie James, you know, because there because it could
- 6:43Speaker 3: be like Eli Manning right where he only where did
- 6:46Speaker 3: he refuse to go to?
- 6:48Speaker 1: He was not going to go to San Diegos, right,
- 6:51Speaker 1: the Chargers and they got Drew Brees, correct, Yep, Yep,
- 6:54Speaker 1: that's how that works.
- 6:55Speaker 2: If that'll happen with should possibly.
- 6:58Speaker 1: If he can stay, was it, Adam Shefter saying, I
- 7:00Speaker 1: don't know if he's powerful enough Deon to be able
- 7:03Speaker 1: to steer him to the Raiders because deals would have
- 7:06Speaker 1: to be made, They would have to trade up possibly
- 7:09Speaker 1: in order to make this thing really and truly happen.
- 7:12Speaker 1: There's one other college football thing wanted to get to.
- 7:14Speaker 1: We were talking about this, you know, the playoffs, and
- 7:17Speaker 1: we're going to find out tonight. The updated playoff ranking standings,
- 7:23Speaker 1: the long ORNs are expected to still be number three
- 7:25Speaker 1: in the standings, which would make the number two in
- 7:28Speaker 1: the playoff because one in two in the rankings would
- 7:31Speaker 1: be Oregon in Ohio State. And of course, as we know,
- 7:33Speaker 1: only one of those teams can represent the Big Ten
- 7:36Speaker 1: Conference in terms as the conference champion drawing a first
- 7:40Speaker 1: round by and if one of those two defeats the
- 7:46Speaker 1: other in the Big Ten Championship, they're probably going to
- 7:48Speaker 1: be the one seed. Texas could be the two seed
- 7:51Speaker 1: if it wins out, if it wins Saturday Night College Station,
- 7:54Speaker 1: then wins in Atlanta against Georgia, they could be the
- 7:58Speaker 1: two seed. Other projections have Georgia going in is the
- 8:01Speaker 1: two seed, but you know, be the two seed, but
- 8:04Speaker 1: they'll probably be ranked third again tonight. So the number
- 8:10Speaker 1: of SEC teams projected, depending on which projection you're looking at,
- 8:16Speaker 1: the number of SEC teams projected to make the college
- 8:18Speaker 1: football playoffs right now is down from five to three
- 8:24Speaker 1: because of Ole Miss and Alabama's losses and Texas A
- 8:27Speaker 1: and M's loss and all that sort of thing.
- 8:29Speaker 2: So there's that.
- 8:31Speaker 1: Then there is the projection of what could happen with
- 8:35Speaker 1: the Big Ten, with the Indiana taking a hit and
- 8:37Speaker 1: going down but not completely out of the standings, and
- 8:41Speaker 1: what could happen with SMU and Miami and the ACC
- 8:44Speaker 1: and the very real possibility that the Big Twelve champion
- 8:48Speaker 1: could wind up not getting a buye being rated lower
- 8:53Speaker 1: than Boise State, and that boys, he would draw that well,
- 8:58Speaker 1: that was all on the mine of Kansas State head
- 9:01Speaker 1: coach Chris Kleman at his news conference today when he
- 9:05Speaker 1: feels the fault with the Big Twelve lies in the
- 9:08Speaker 1: practice of playing nine conference games instead of eight conference games.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Other teams can leave lose in other leagues, and it's
- 9:17Speaker 4: that league's really good. We lose in this league in
- 9:19Speaker 4: this league stinks, and I don't understand that as a conference,
- 9:24Speaker 4: we need to get together and figure some things out.
- 9:26Speaker 4: Because for a bunch of teams to be nine and
- 9:29Speaker 4: three and us not get any of those things in
- 9:32Speaker 4: the College Football Playoff, then we've got to cancel one
- 9:34Speaker 4: of these games.
- 9:35Speaker 2: I don't care what people say.
- 9:37Speaker 4: We then go to eight games in league play, or
- 9:40Speaker 4: stay with nine but play an FCS or play a
- 9:44Speaker 4: group of five, and I'd say, wow, that would hurt you.
- 9:47Speaker 4: I don't care you say what you want. Ten and
- 9:49Speaker 4: two looks better than nine and three. And we're going
- 9:52Speaker 4: to visit at this year's conference meetings. And because we
- 9:57Speaker 4: have to do things to benefit our league for the
- 10:00Speaker 4: twelve team playoff, not to just benefit our league in general,
- 10:03Speaker 4: and we need to be able to get two and
- 10:07Speaker 4: three teams in the Big Twelve or in the twelve
- 10:10Speaker 4: team playoff. The carnage that you're seeing is going to
- 10:13Speaker 4: allow for one most likely.
- 10:16Speaker 1: So there it is not happy with it. And saying
- 10:19Speaker 1: that the nine games played in conference plays the problem,
- 10:24Speaker 1: I don't know that that's the whole problem. The problem
- 10:28Speaker 1: for the Big Twelve is that too many teams who
- 10:32Speaker 1: are good teams ranked in the CFP rankings, but not
- 10:38Speaker 1: high enough other than BYU as they were a couple
- 10:42Speaker 1: of weeks ago, not ranked high enough to sustain a
- 10:46Speaker 1: loss or two as what we've seen like with Georgia.
- 10:51Speaker 1: So and here's Texas with one loss and probably in
- 10:54Speaker 1: the three slot right now.
- 10:55Speaker 2: But it's those other ones.
- 10:56Speaker 1: And that's his main beef is by playing games, there's
- 11:01Speaker 1: more cannibalizing going.
- 11:03Speaker 3: On, and right now with the SEC, you play eight games,
- 11:07Speaker 3: eight conference games, and there's been a lot of discussion
- 11:09Speaker 3: and discourse. You know, we've heard sarcast about it, We've
- 11:12Speaker 3: heard CDC asked about it, we've heard Greg Sanky asked
- 11:14Speaker 3: about it. Would the SEC consider going to a nine
- 11:18Speaker 3: game schedule? And there's kind of been likeh you know,
- 11:21Speaker 3: we got to see. And I think this is why
- 11:23Speaker 3: the SEC has waited because even next year, Craig in
- 11:25Speaker 3: twenty twenty five, I believe it's still an eight game
- 11:27Speaker 3: conference schedule. It is, and so I think they want
- 11:29Speaker 3: to see, first off, there's a playoff expan possibly to
- 11:33Speaker 3: sixteen sixteen teams and even more, and also what happens
- 11:37Speaker 3: if these schools beat up on each other like we're
- 11:39Speaker 3: seeing last week with Auburn beating A and M and
- 11:41Speaker 3: Alabama losing the Oklahoma and Ole mis loosing, are we
- 11:44Speaker 3: losing more playoff teams because the SCC they won as
- 11:47Speaker 3: many playoff teams as possible in a nine game schedule.
- 11:51Speaker 3: As Chris Cleman talks about hurts.
- 11:53Speaker 2: That yep, it does.
- 11:55Speaker 1: And I think you're right and that they're going to
- 11:57Speaker 1: they're playing a wait and see game with regard to
- 11:59Speaker 1: whether there's a expansion of the playoffs. The expansion will come.
- 12:02Speaker 1: It is inevitable. The genie is out of the bottle.
- 12:04Speaker 1: It's going to happen. And by the way, I'm for it.
- 12:06Speaker 1: I think it's good. I mean, look at look at
- 12:08Speaker 1: the conversation and excitement about the twelve team. It'll be
- 12:13Speaker 1: even more with the sixteen.
- 12:14Speaker 2: It just will. I'm still I still like eight teams.
- 12:19Speaker 1: You know what I would like here? Here My way
- 12:21Speaker 1: of looking at it is different than say how the
- 12:23Speaker 1: SEC or other college football people look at it. Here's
- 12:26Speaker 1: the way I'd like it. There are eleven eleven Division
- 12:33Speaker 1: one fps conferences. Give every one of those conference champions
- 12:38Speaker 1: a birth, not a buye a birth. You can rank them.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Give every one of those eleven Division one FPS conference champion,
- 12:46Speaker 1: the back the Sunbell Conference USA American. Yeah, give Mount West,
- 12:52Speaker 1: give them all those five plus the other ones there
- 12:56Speaker 1: are eleven, Go ahead and give them that those births
- 13:00Speaker 1: and then have five at larges. The next five rank
- 13:04Speaker 1: and you can rank it outever you want. However, you
- 13:06Speaker 1: have your committee do the ranking. But don't give automatic bids.
- 13:10Speaker 1: I mean, don't give buys. You have sixteen team things,
- 13:12Speaker 1: you don't have buys, and then you just rank them
- 13:15Speaker 1: and you go from there, and don't don't let automout
- 13:20Speaker 1: conference champions slot in at the top. You just rank it.
- 13:24Speaker 1: But every conference gets in. And for those who would say,
- 13:27Speaker 1: well what good would that do you, I mean, you know,
- 13:29Speaker 1: you have somebody playing a Sun Belt team that probably
- 13:31Speaker 1: slaughter or whatever as supposed to buy whatever, play a game.
- 13:35Speaker 1: Let the whole the totality of the first round be
- 13:38Speaker 1: on the campus sites of the top eight seeds, and
- 13:42Speaker 1: then after that then you go into your bowl thing
- 13:45Speaker 1: with your remaining eight teams like they're planning to do
- 13:47Speaker 1: this year.
- 13:48Speaker 2: Just my thought.
- 13:49Speaker 1: All right, we're going to talk some basketball coming up
- 13:51Speaker 1: on sports Radio AM thirteen under the Zone.
