- 1:55Speaker 1: Ole Miss football. Heath Hinton on Southern Miss, their head
- 1:58Speaker 1: football coach. Their fans are taking it as controversial. I
- 2:02Speaker 1: don't take it as controversial. We'll get into that. as
- 2:06Speaker 1: we'll talk a little Southern Miss football. Babe, how many
- 2:08Speaker 1: minutes today did we walk?
- 2:10Speaker 4: Well, man, I was feeling so much better than yesterday today.
- 2:14Speaker 4: I had some stomach troubles yesterday. I got out there.
- 2:17Speaker 1: I was going. I was moving.
- 2:19Speaker 4: And then that's when you and me started exchanging messages about,
- 2:24Speaker 4: you know, what we were talking about, local quote-unquote media
- 2:29Speaker 4: and how– Oh, yeah. quote-unquote media is really just super
- 2:33Speaker 4: fans these days and i got all worked up and
- 2:36Speaker 4: i was like i'm gonna go in here i'm gonna
- 2:38Speaker 4: go back to work i could not even continue out
- 2:42Speaker 4: there i was so disgusted by the conversations we were having.
- 2:46Speaker 1: Well i didn't mean to throw your work uh your your.
- 2:48Speaker 4: Walk you did at work off you messed it all
- 2:51Speaker 4: up we'll.
- 2:52Speaker 1: Have to make it up to you but hey it's
- 2:53Speaker 1: probably good you have to catch up on some things
- 2:55Speaker 1: and let your blood pressure come down.
- 2:57Speaker 4: Yeah, actually, I had some real work to do, which
- 3:00Speaker 4: is probably more important, I guess.
- 3:03Speaker 1: So it worked. Yeah, at least today, on a Tuesday. Hey,
- 3:06Speaker 1: CFB teams' chances of making the college football playoff, according
- 3:10Speaker 1: to ESPN, their predictor poll, Texas at 90%. I don't
- 3:15Speaker 1: know that Texas is a 90% shoo-in to the college
- 3:20Speaker 1: football playoff. This is a team, and let's look at
- 3:23Speaker 1: Texas' schedule. the rest of the way. Actually, I can
- 3:29Speaker 1: go over here and do it like this. Because Texas
- 3:31Speaker 1: has not looked great. I mean, yes, the Ohio State
- 3:35Speaker 1: game sticks out because of the comeback and what they
- 3:39Speaker 1: were able to do in that moment in the comeback.
- 3:42Speaker 1: But Texas looked very lethargic against Tennessee. And yeah, they won.
- 3:45Speaker 1: That's the thing. You've got to look at both sides
- 3:47Speaker 1: of the coin. Played very average to poor in some spots,
- 3:50Speaker 1: and they still won. So Texas with a 90% chance.
- 3:54Speaker 1: They have a bye week this week. They'll play Oklahoma.
- 3:57Speaker 1: in the Red River shootout on the 10th. And normally
- 4:00Speaker 1: you can kind of do the whole throw the records
- 4:03Speaker 1: out thing. If Oklahoma can't find offense, I don't know
- 4:05Speaker 1: that you're throwing anything out there. They should beat Oklahoma.
- 4:08Speaker 1: Florida's a team that will come to Austin. And, you know,
- 4:13Speaker 1: the way Florida plays, Florida beat them last year. That's
- 4:15Speaker 1: a game that's a 50-50 game. They'll host Ole Miss.
- 4:18Speaker 1: I don't think Ole Miss will have a chance. I
- 4:20Speaker 1: think Mississippi State's going to have a chance out there,
- 4:22Speaker 1: if they can stay healthy. They play at Missouri, at LSU, Arkansas,
- 4:26Speaker 1: and at Texas A & M. And to think that
- 4:28Speaker 1: this team could go unscathed, they're going to get dinged
- 4:31Speaker 1: at some point. They may get dinged twice. Notre Dame
- 4:34Speaker 1: an 85% chance to make the college football playoff, according
- 4:36Speaker 1: to ESPN's playoff predictor poll. And the Irish, I mean,
- 4:40Speaker 1: unless something happens, they will 1,000% be in the playoff. Again,
- 4:45Speaker 1: their schedule is very, very manageable. If we go look
- 4:51Speaker 1: at Notre Dame coming up this week, the Irish play
- 4:55Speaker 1: at North Carolina. They've had no problem. I mean, they
- 4:58Speaker 1: have beaten everybody easily. Wisconsin, Rice, Michigan State at Purdue,
- 5:02Speaker 1: last past week 49-10. At North Carolina, Stanford, at BYU,
- 5:07Speaker 1: that can give them some problems. Navy could give them,
- 5:10Speaker 1: you know, half a game. But the Miami game on
- 5:13Speaker 1: November 7th, that's the big one. Boston College, SMU could
- 5:16Speaker 1: give them some problems, and then at Syracuse. So Notre
- 5:18Speaker 1: Dame is going to be in the playoff. I think
- 5:20Speaker 1: we can lock them in on the 29th of September.
- 5:24Speaker 1: to be in the playoff. Georgia's going to be in
- 5:25Speaker 1: the playoff, 84% chance to be in the playoff. Georgia
- 5:29Speaker 1: has had no problems so far with their schedule, and
- 5:33Speaker 1: Georgia hasn't played the type of schedule that some of
- 5:36Speaker 1: these teams have had, but Georgia has dominated the field.
- 5:40Speaker 1: They're averaging 55 a game, and you look back at
- 5:44Speaker 1: last year, they were averaging 32 a game. They're averaging
- 5:47Speaker 1: 22 points a game more than they averaged last year.
- 5:51Speaker 1: And two years prior, they were averaging 32 points per game. 2023,
- 5:55Speaker 1: they averaged 40 points per game. In 2022, they averaged 41. So,
- 5:59Speaker 1: you know, when you get to the Kirby Smart heyday,
- 6:02Speaker 1: when Georgia was winning a couple national championships in there,
- 6:05Speaker 1: they were averaging 40 points. They were averaging 55. They're
- 6:08Speaker 1: only giving up 13. And when you look back at
- 6:11Speaker 1: some of these defenses where they won national championships, they
- 6:13Speaker 1: were averaging in the 13s and 14s, 10s. So this
- 6:18Speaker 1: team is on track at least through one month to
- 6:20Speaker 1: be that type of team. They'll play Vanderbilt on Saturday.
- 6:24Speaker 1: They'll turn around and go to Alabama on the 10th.
- 6:27Speaker 1: They'll host Auburn. They'll play Florida on the cocktail party.
- 6:30Speaker 1: They'll go to Ole Miss. They'll play Missouri at South Carolina,
- 6:32Speaker 1: Georgia Tech. And, you know, there may be a loss
- 6:34Speaker 1: in there for Georgia, maybe at Alabama, maybe at Ole Miss,
- 6:38Speaker 1: maybe Florida. I don't think Missouri or South Carolina or
- 6:41Speaker 1: Georgia Tech. I think there's some sleepwalking probably there. Alabama,
- 6:46Speaker 1: 73% chance to make the college football playoff. A month
- 6:49Speaker 1: into the season. Alabama looks like they will return to
- 6:53Speaker 1: the playoff. You know, we'll see what happens Saturday. Saturday, obviously,
- 6:57Speaker 1: a big game for Mississippi State and Alabama, and we'll
- 7:00Speaker 1: continue to cover that. You know, Kalen DeBoer's been there
- 7:04Speaker 1: two years, and this is by far the best offense
- 7:08Speaker 1: that they've had, 48 a game. They're giving up 20, though.
- 7:11Speaker 1: Their defense is a little questionable at times. They'll play
- 7:14Speaker 1: at Mississippi State, host Georgia. They'll go to Tennessee. So
- 7:17Speaker 1: they've got three really tough weeks. And then, you know,
- 7:19Speaker 1: Texas A & M is a team that has kind
- 7:21Speaker 1: of fallen off the cliff a little bit. But when
- 7:23Speaker 1: you get Texas A & M on the back end
- 7:25Speaker 1: of those four, that could get a little dicey on
- 7:28Speaker 1: the 24th of October. They'll go to LSU. They'll play
- 7:31Speaker 1: at Vanderbilt, Chattanooga, and then Auburn. So there are some
- 7:34Speaker 1: landmines for Alabama on this schedule. And it starts this
- 7:37Speaker 1: weekend in Starkville. Indiana, a 69% chance to make the
- 7:42Speaker 1: college football playoff. They have not played anybody in this
- 7:46Speaker 1: past weekend. They were very lackluster. Now, they're averaging 44
- 7:50Speaker 1: a game and giving up just 10 a game. They
- 7:53Speaker 1: squeaked by Northwestern 29-23. They'll play at Rutgers and at Nebraska,
- 7:59Speaker 1: which you would think, Rutgers game, you can cash that check. Nebraska,
- 8:03Speaker 1: you should be able to cash that one. Ohio State
- 8:06Speaker 1: at home, that's going to be. They play Ohio State
- 8:07Speaker 1: and then at Michigan back-to-back before going to play Minnesota
- 8:10Speaker 1: and then USC at Washington. So there will be some
- 8:13Speaker 1: tests for Indiana and Kirk Cignetti down the stretch. that
- 8:17Speaker 1: could put them in a little bit of a pickle.
- 8:19Speaker 1: Ohio State, 68% chance they should be in the playoff.
- 8:23Speaker 1: You look at some others. Utah at 49%. Florida at 49%.
- 8:27Speaker 1: Texas Tech, 48%. Oregon, 41%. They kind of got a
- 8:31Speaker 1: bump after beating USC and beating them mightily. LSU was
- 8:35Speaker 1: still a 40% chance. Boise, also BYU at 30% chance.
- 8:40Speaker 1: James Madison, 28% chance. But if Boise makes it, then
- 8:43Speaker 1: they're not. um surely to god the cfp is not
- 8:46Speaker 1: going to give two group of five teams another opportunity
- 8:49Speaker 1: like they did last year nebraska and mississippi state at
- 8:52Speaker 1: 25 pittsburgh 23 along with iowa and tennessee at 22
- 8:57Speaker 1: so just a little bit on the playoff predictor poll
- 8:58Speaker 1: this week again this is a fluid deal it moves
- 9:02Speaker 1: uh you know weekly with with what happens so uh
- 9:05Speaker 1: something there the uh senate is uh Fist pumping in D.C.
- 9:11Speaker 1: They're excited. They got it passed through the Protect College
- 9:14Speaker 1: Sports Act through the Senate. Now, that's just the first hurdle.
- 9:16Speaker 1: They got to pass the House, and that's probably not
- 9:17Speaker 1: going to happen. There's all kinds of people coming out
- 9:22Speaker 1: against this thing, from other political leaders to the NAACP
- 9:28Speaker 1: to this other group to this players' union. I mean,
- 9:31Speaker 1: it's got a lot of people against it, and rightfully so.
- 9:33Speaker 1: There's a lot that is wrong with this bill. Stuart
- 9:36Speaker 1: Mandel says the Senate is currently– Yesterday, voting on last-minute
- 9:40Speaker 1: Protect the College Sports Act, Senator Rand Paul proposed giving
- 9:44Speaker 1: the NCAA full antitrust immunity that would allow it to
- 9:49Speaker 1: go back to pure amateurism with unpaid athletes. He says,
- 9:53Speaker 1: as of this tweet, it's at one yay in 87 days.
- 9:56Speaker 1: That's never going to happen. So, see, I mean, you
- 9:57Speaker 1: get dumb stuff like this. is where you get a
- 10:00Speaker 1: senator that puts out, well, let's just go back to
- 10:03Speaker 1: pure amateurism. Well, it never was pure amateurism to begin with.
- 10:07Speaker 1: That was all a facade. We are brought to you
- 10:09Speaker 1: by Mississippi Blood Services. I want to remind you of
- 10:12Speaker 1: the Kendra Scott giveaway. You still got a day to
- 10:15Speaker 1: do that. So, you know, a lot of other stuff

- 10:22Speaker 1: of course, msblood.com, you can learn more today. Please give
- 10:25Speaker 1: blood platelets and more. We'll have Jake Thompson coming up
- 10:27Speaker 1: in 20 minutes. It is Tuesday. Back in a bit.
- 10:29Speaker 2: Hey, it's Beau Bounds, and if you're talking innovation, you're
- 10:32Speaker 2: talking Mississippi State. The Bagley College of Engineering is leading
- 10:35Speaker 2: the way with the first bachelor's in artificial intelligence in
- 10:38Speaker 2: the SEC, plus new master's degrees in AI and a
- 10:41Speaker 2: booming cybersecurity program. Their students are earning national scholarships, gaining
- 10:46Speaker 2: real-world experience through the ID Lab, and landing jobs fast
- 10:49Speaker 2: with a 94% placement rate after graduation. If you want
- 10:53Speaker 2: to design the future, do it at Mississippi State. Learn
- 10:56Speaker 2: more at bagley.msstate. One of the last pure pleasures I
- 11:05Speaker 2: have left in my life. Yeah, maybe you ought to
- 11:07Speaker 2: get a life first, okay?
- 11:08Speaker 1: On ESPN 105.9 The Zone and online at thezone1059.
- 11:10Speaker 2: Com.
- 11:30Speaker 1: A little technical difficulty there. Sorry about that. We're going
- 11:33Speaker 1: to try to make this work here. We were talking
- 11:34Speaker 1: a little bit about Ole Miss, and we'll talk to
- 11:36Speaker 1: Jake Thompson coming up here in the next segment about
- 11:38Speaker 1: everything going on with Ole Miss with the bye week. And,
- 11:41Speaker 1: you know, you get one-handed to you like they did.
- 11:44Speaker 1: I mean, Florida handed them, you know, on the backside
- 11:46Speaker 1: just a little bit there, a little pop or two,
- 11:48Speaker 1: and you get taken to the woodshed, 52-28. You got
- 11:51Speaker 1: a week to kind of reset. And, you know, we
- 11:53Speaker 1: talked about Ole Miss. Last week was the week that
- 11:57Speaker 1: I had been saying I wanted to see how Ole
- 11:59Speaker 1: Miss played. It wasn't the LSU game. I felt like
- 12:01Speaker 1: they were going to play good against LSU. And, look,
- 12:03Speaker 1: I don't pretend to think that necessarily Ole Miss just
- 12:06Speaker 1: had their head in the clouds or they didn't take
- 12:09Speaker 1: Florida serious. I just think, you know, when you look
- 12:11Speaker 1: at Florida, that's a tough place to go play, and
- 12:14Speaker 1: that's a good football team. Now, how good is Florida?
- 12:17Speaker 1: We'll see down the stretch, but Ole Miss will get
- 12:18Speaker 1: back into action next week at Vanderbilt and then host Missouri.
- 12:22Speaker 1: Alston Simmons, you know, went to Mississippi State this past week.
- 12:25Speaker 1: He'll make his second tour back into the state of
- 12:27Speaker 1: Mississippi and take on Ole Miss. And then they go
- 12:29Speaker 1: to Texas. And, look, again, the way Texas is played,
- 12:32Speaker 1: that is a game that Ole Miss can be in
- 12:34Speaker 1: out in Austin to host Auburn. So, you know, if
- 12:37Speaker 1: Ole Miss, and they do, wants playoff aspirations, they need
- 12:41Speaker 1: to reel off at least the next two. You know,
- 12:44Speaker 1: if they lost to Texas and then beat Auburn, Oklahoma
- 12:49Speaker 1: on the road, and Wofford, and we'll table Mississippi State,
- 12:53Speaker 1: you know, they need to have at least just, you know,
- 12:55Speaker 1: two losses there. going into that Egg Bowl. And that's
- 12:58Speaker 1: going to be very tough to do, which means you've
- 13:00Speaker 1: got a little room for error, one either at Texas
- 13:02Speaker 1: or one against Georgia at home. So we'll see with
- 13:06Speaker 1: the Ole Miss Rebels. We will get into this college
- 13:07Speaker 1: football playoff 24-team expansion talk. We'll continue this week in
- 13:11Speaker 1: meetings in Chicago. Momentum is building for a 24-team field
- 13:15Speaker 1: with the ACC, Big 12, and Notre Dame supporting it
- 13:19Speaker 1: and the SEC at least open to it. So we
- 13:22Speaker 1: will– Get on to that here in a little bit. Also,
- 13:28Speaker 1: this is kind of a weird story coming out of Auburn.
- 13:31Speaker 1: Sources have provided more details on Auburn on On3 on
- 13:36Speaker 1: events leading to the arrest of former Auburn football staffer
- 13:38Speaker 1: David Jenrith, including how sensitive recruiting evaluations were distributed to
- 13:45Speaker 1: other schools. So we'll get into this. Basically, a staffer
- 13:48Speaker 1: that was there. Got let go. He took a bunch
- 13:51Speaker 1: of sensitive information and passed it on to 11 rivals
- 13:55Speaker 1: of Auburn. And if you saw a picture of this guy,
- 13:57Speaker 1: it came out today. I think Outkick put it out.
- 14:00Speaker 1: I'm not trying to be funny. He looks almost like
- 14:02Speaker 1: a Unabomber. I mean, the guy looks really weird. Very,
- 14:05Speaker 1: very weird. That's neither here nor there. Florida's John Summerall
- 14:09Speaker 1: refers to Tuesday as, quote, bloody Tuesday and his game day.
- 14:14Speaker 1: He says, quote, we got a great indoor practice facility
- 14:16Speaker 1: here on Tuesdays. We don't use it. We don't use it.
- 14:19Speaker 1: We don't even enter the dang door of the indoor.
- 14:22Speaker 1: I don't want anything going or anyone in the indoor
- 14:26Speaker 1: on Tuesday. We're going to be outside. I hope it's hot.
- 14:30Speaker 1: Tuesdays have to be physical and violent, and you've got
- 14:32Speaker 1: to strain. There's that word. We haven't heard that in
- 14:34Speaker 1: a long time. And you don't know how to play
- 14:40Speaker 1: a certain way on Saturday. I commend some of these coaches,
- 14:45Speaker 1: and not all of them do it. that have a
- 14:47Speaker 1: day that they dedicate to full physicality and practice week.
- 14:52Speaker 1: So many teams now, and I get it, they don't hit.
- 14:57Speaker 1: They just kind of hit. They're not physical at all
- 15:00Speaker 1: during the week. And again, if you wonder why tackling
- 15:05Speaker 1: is so bad in some games, even down to the
- 15:08Speaker 1: high school level, and it gets a little better as
- 15:10Speaker 1: the season goes on because guys are getting more, especially
- 15:12Speaker 1: early in the year. If you see Teams in high
- 15:15Speaker 1: school and college and the tackling is not good. Well,
- 15:17Speaker 1: they're not doing any of it. I mean, they're kind
- 15:19Speaker 1: of doing it, but they're not being physical in practice.
- 15:21Speaker 1: And I get it. You want to keep your team healthy.
- 15:24Speaker 1: You're trying to keep the physical contact to a minimum.
- 15:28Speaker 1: But somewhere along the way, we lost the whole train
- 15:31Speaker 1: of thought that football is a physical sport. It is
- 15:34Speaker 1: a physical, violent sport. And you have to practice it
- 15:37Speaker 1: at some times as such. So I commend John Summerall
- 15:41Speaker 1: for this, as he calls it, Bloody Tuesday. Meaning, hey,
- 15:44Speaker 1: this is our day that we're going to be outside.
- 15:47Speaker 1: We're not going inside. No indoor practice facility. You're going
- 15:50Speaker 1: to go outside. I hope it's hot. I hope it's nasty.
- 15:53Speaker 1: And we're going to get a little violent today. And,
- 15:56Speaker 1: you know, you have to mimic what goes on on
- 15:58Speaker 1: a game day. You have to at some point. You
- 16:01Speaker 1: can't just be, hey, we're going to lock up and
- 16:03Speaker 1: let go. We're not taking people to the ground. And
- 16:05Speaker 1: I get it. You don't want to take people to
- 16:06Speaker 1: the ground every day because of injuries and, you know,
- 16:09Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. But you have to have a
- 16:10Speaker 1: day in the middle of the week, um, The NFL's
- 16:13Speaker 1: kind of gotten away from this. Now, they will do
- 16:15Speaker 1: some of this, but I commend John Summerall for this. Also,
- 16:19Speaker 1: the New York Giants have released Beaver's favorite ride receiver,
- 16:22Speaker 1: Odell Beckham Jr. So that was a short stint that
- 16:26Speaker 1: he had with the New York football Giants. We are
- 16:29Speaker 1: brought to you by our friends at Corbin Greer Construction.
- 16:31Speaker 1: Call them today, 662-792-4201. That's 662-792-4201. Let them help you
- 16:38Speaker 1: with architectural shingles, metal roofing, TPO rubber solutions, commercial builds,
- 16:42Speaker 1: and more. Let them help you today with hardy siding,
- 16:45Speaker 1: interior and exterior painting, everything you need from a new
- 16:48Speaker 1: build all the way to a remodel. 662-792-4201. Jake Thompson
- 16:53Speaker 1: will join us. We'll talk Ole Miss football when we're
- 16:55Speaker 1: coming back in a bit.
- 16:58Speaker 5: I love days like these at the pool, but my
- 17:00Speaker 5: moderate to severe plaque psoriasis can sometimes take me out
- 17:03Speaker 5: of the moment. I'm ready to make a splash with

- 17:20Speaker 5: even 100% plaque-free. People also saw significant improvement in psoriasis
- 17:25Speaker 5: symptoms of pain, redness, itching, and burning.
- 17:27Speaker 6: Don't use if allergic to Skyrizzy. Serious allergic reactions, increased infections,

- 18:52Speaker 1: that conversation with you. Jake Thompson, you can find him
- 18:54Speaker 1: on X, a part of the Oxford Eagle. He is
- 18:56Speaker 1: on your radio talking Ole Miss. They're on a bye
- 18:58Speaker 1: week this week. Jake, welcome here, brother. How are you doing?
- 19:01Speaker 3: I'm doing good. Thanks for having me on.
- 19:03Speaker 1: Jake, let's talk a little bit about what we saw
- 19:06Speaker 1: this past weekend. And then, of course, moving forward, you've
- 19:08Speaker 1: got to put this one to bed. I'm sure Ole
- 19:09Speaker 1: Miss has. You know, they just could never out-chase Florida.
- 19:13Speaker 1: Down 10-0 in the first. They put six on the board.
- 19:17Speaker 1: It was 17-6 at the half. Outscored Florida by a
- 19:19Speaker 1: point in the third, and then it just got away
- 19:21Speaker 1: from Ole Miss. Just kind of your high points and
- 19:24Speaker 1: what you saw. I mean, obviously, when you look at
- 19:26Speaker 1: Jaden Ball, 142 yards and three touchdowns. Also, Duke Clark,
- 19:29Speaker 1: 126 yards and, you know, 315. two total rushing yards.
- 19:34Speaker 1: That was kind of the story for Florida. But your
- 19:36Speaker 1: thoughts on the game as a whole?
- 19:39Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, there weren't a lot of high points
- 19:41Speaker 3: outside of, I guess, Trinidad Chambliss, you know, putting on
- 19:45Speaker 3: that Superman cape. And really the sole reason they got
- 19:48Speaker 3: the 28 points they got on Saturday, you know, it's
- 19:51Speaker 3: just that 10 spot they gave Florida in the first
- 19:54Speaker 3: six minutes was really kind of what set the tone
- 19:57Speaker 3: for most of the game. They got it back to
- 20:00Speaker 3: within three when they kind of rallied in that third quarter.
- 20:03Speaker 3: And then they started trading touchdowns for a minute. to
- 20:06Speaker 3: kind of keep it at a 10 point to then
- 20:07Speaker 3: late in the third. And then that, and that whole
- 20:09Speaker 3: fourth quarter, it just got away from, from Ole Miss
- 20:12Speaker 3: and the defensively. I mean, there's a lot of glaring
- 20:15Speaker 3: concerns or issues from run defense to just pure tackling
- 20:19Speaker 3: inability and a lot of things. And also special teams
- 20:22Speaker 3: really kind of made everybody a little concerned, especially Lucas Carnero,
- 20:26Speaker 3: who's usually not, not hitting, kicking touchbacks could barely get
- 20:30Speaker 3: it to the goal line on some of his kickoffs. And,
- 20:33Speaker 3: Pete said he noticed that he wasn't really getting the
- 20:36Speaker 3: ball like he normally did post-game, but didn't hint that
- 20:39Speaker 3: anything was bothering Lucas. I guess, obviously, we'll see how
- 20:42Speaker 3: he handles kickoffs next Saturday in Nashville against Vanderbilt. But, yeah,
- 20:46Speaker 3: I mean, there was a lot of issues. And, of course,
- 20:48Speaker 3: you sit there and go, was this the game where
- 20:50Speaker 3: they just got punched in the mouth and they needed
- 20:52Speaker 3: it now after coming off that LSU game? And Florida's good,
- 20:56Speaker 3: but Ole Miss can also still be good. Or is
- 20:59Speaker 3: it this is the defense Pete's got for the rest
- 21:01Speaker 3: of the season and then more questions will come from
- 21:04Speaker 3: that obviously with how the rest of these eight games go.
- 21:07Speaker 3: But it's a lot of kind of hand-wringing and a
- 21:10Speaker 3: little nervousness right now up here after how everybody felt
- 21:13Speaker 3: this time a week ago coming off the LSU win.
- 21:15Speaker 3: It's just kind of how that life is in the SEC.
- 21:17Speaker 3: It can change in a week.
- 21:20Speaker 1: Jake Thompson talking Ole Miss football. Tuesday edition of the program,
- 21:22Speaker 1: get him on X at Jake Thompson, Oxford Eagle. And,
- 21:27Speaker 1: of course, you can also get him at the Oxford Eagle. So, Jake,
- 21:29Speaker 1: the defense, that's where I want to go next is,
- 21:31Speaker 1: And we just won't know, you know, until we see
- 21:34Speaker 1: a few more ballgames. And you look at Ole Miss and,
- 21:38Speaker 1: you know, rushing yards per game. I mean, they're giving
- 21:40Speaker 1: up 4.64. A lot of that's, you know, out of
- 21:43Speaker 1: that Florida game. But then you go back last year,
- 21:45Speaker 1: they gave up right at 4.2. The year before that,
- 21:47Speaker 1: you know, Paul Tree 2.29. I mean, that was a
- 21:49Speaker 1: stingy defense in 2024. Is it a schematic thing? Is
- 21:54Speaker 1: it a personnel thing? Or is it still something to
- 21:56Speaker 1: be determined?
- 21:57Speaker 3: Yeah, that'd be to be determined, but I think we're
- 22:00Speaker 3: getting close to obviously maybe another game or so, especially
- 22:02Speaker 3: if Andy somehow has a decent day against that defense
- 22:05Speaker 3: next weekend. Is it personnel? Is it not as good
- 22:09Speaker 3: of a defense on paper as everybody kind of thought
- 22:11Speaker 3: and said all summer and through fall camp? Were there
- 22:14Speaker 3: some worry of comparing it to that defense from two
- 22:17Speaker 3: years ago? And it could be that good again. And
- 22:19Speaker 3: obviously a quarter of the way through the season, it's
- 22:21Speaker 3: anything but in a lot of different categories. But, yeah,
- 22:26Speaker 3: I know that you feel good about the guys that
- 22:27Speaker 3: are brought in, but is it also a question of
- 22:30Speaker 3: does Pete need to delegate responsibilities even more than he
- 22:33Speaker 3: already has? I mean, is it tough being the head
- 22:35Speaker 3: coach and also the play caller on defense? Now, I
- 22:38Speaker 3: don't think it's fair to say it yet, but, I mean,
- 22:40Speaker 3: that's kind of one of those questions that will come
- 22:42Speaker 3: if defense continues to be the biggest Achilles heel to
- 22:45Speaker 3: this team and keeping them from where people thought they
- 22:48Speaker 3: would be able to go come the postseason.
- 22:51Speaker 1: What about, you know, Keyron Lacey? I mean, you obviously
- 22:54Speaker 1: got a week off. You get a chance to get
- 22:56Speaker 1: guys healthy. Ole Miss returns to action on the 10th.
- 22:58Speaker 1: We'll talk to you next week. They'll go to Vanderbilt
- 23:00Speaker 1: and then return home against Missouri. So you got two
- 23:03Speaker 1: ballgames that you feel, you know, you've got, you know,
- 23:05Speaker 1: should be a favorite in both of those ballgames before
- 23:07Speaker 1: you have to go on the road to Texas. And
- 23:09Speaker 1: we'll get to Texas down the road. They've got problems
- 23:11Speaker 1: of their own, I think. But as far as health
- 23:14Speaker 1: of the team, getting Lacey back and getting ready, you know,
- 23:17Speaker 1: as you got a break here.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I think, obviously, he made the trip.
- 23:21Speaker 3: He was on the sideline, and it just didn't feel
- 23:23Speaker 3: comfortable giving him a go. You know, Lindsey did well
- 23:27Speaker 3: at times. We saw Makai Fraser a couple times, but,
- 23:29Speaker 3: you know, Pete alluded last week that he's banged up
- 23:32Speaker 3: coming off of the, you know, either the Charlotte or
- 23:35Speaker 3: the LSU game when something happened with him. So he's
- 23:37Speaker 3: not full strength, so you're down two guys. Obviously, you're
- 23:40Speaker 3: down the most important piece in Lacey and what he
- 23:43Speaker 3: can add and help change that offense and not put
- 23:45Speaker 3: everything on Trinidad.
- 23:47Speaker 2: So.
- 23:48Speaker 3: You know, he didn't play. That was one game off.
- 23:50Speaker 3: Gets to buy a week. And realistically, probably three weeks
- 23:54Speaker 3: of him doing light work because they didn't really do
- 23:56Speaker 3: much with him in practice leading up to the game
- 23:58Speaker 3: against Florida either. So you hope that that's enough for
- 24:00Speaker 3: him to get over what they, you know, shoulder-wise what
- 24:03Speaker 3: they felt from MRIs and x-rays was not as bad
- 24:06Speaker 3: as they feared and I guess doesn't need any kind
- 24:08Speaker 3: of procedure or surgery done and just rest. But they
- 24:11Speaker 3: need him back desperately in whatever form that can be. But,
- 24:14Speaker 3: you know, that's kind of been the problem. They even,
- 24:15Speaker 3: you know, going back to last year and the Fiesta
- 24:18Speaker 3: Bowl is apparently the injury proneness of Keiwan Lacey. Now,
- 24:21Speaker 3: of course, they've been hard hits. It's not he's barely
- 24:24Speaker 3: getting hit and being hurt, but he is taking hard shots.
- 24:27Speaker 3: And they need him to probably tone that back because
- 24:29Speaker 3: they need him on that field more than not, obviously.
- 24:32Speaker 3: And so getting him back for Vandy. And then Mizzou,
- 24:35Speaker 3: as you said, probably two teams that are winnable. They're
- 24:37Speaker 3: not easy teams, but they're the easiest teams they could
- 24:40Speaker 3: get coming off this game this past week.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Another thing, too, last year, and it's just some of
- 24:48Speaker 1: the metrics that I look at, Ole Miss was plus
- 24:50Speaker 1: one in turnover margin. They're minus four in turnover margin,
- 24:54Speaker 1: which obviously most people, if you don't know what that is,
- 24:57Speaker 1: they're giving up the ball more than they're taking the
- 24:59Speaker 1: ball away. Talk a little bit about some of the
- 25:02Speaker 1: intricacies here that you want to see Ole Miss changed.
- 25:05Speaker 1: I mean, obviously, you want to take the ball away
- 25:06Speaker 1: more than you give it up. And, you know, you
- 25:08Speaker 1: want to play a little bit better defense. But just
- 25:10Speaker 1: some other places where you think the iron needs to
- 25:12Speaker 1: be sharpened before they head to Nashville.
- 25:15Speaker 3: Yeah, I think just, you know, first and foremost, tackling.
- 25:18Speaker 3: They've just got to learn how to tackle. I haven't
- 25:20Speaker 3: seen guys get– end up, you know, on skates or
- 25:23Speaker 3: their ankles broken this much in a long time on that,
- 25:26Speaker 3: you know, on the defensive line. A lot of that
- 25:28Speaker 3: is going against a running back like Jaden Vaughn and
- 25:31Speaker 3: what he can do to you. But it's been noticeable
- 25:34Speaker 3: against Louisville, Charlotte, and LSU too. So, I mean, tackling
- 25:37Speaker 3: has got to be fixed. Trinidad, I mean, he's got
- 25:40Speaker 3: a couple interceptions. That last one, you know, the one
- 25:43Speaker 3: at the end of the game because Florida was just
- 25:45Speaker 3: him trying to make something out of anything. And then
- 25:48Speaker 3: the one against LSU, it was, you know, they did
- 25:51Speaker 3: jailbreak and he just kind of bailed out and threw
- 25:53Speaker 3: it to kind of save himself. And it just happened
- 25:55Speaker 3: to not hit the ground and was caught by an
- 25:57Speaker 3: LSU defender. But, yeah, no, takeaway is, you know, that's
- 26:00Speaker 3: Pete's bread and butter, you know, especially being a defensive
- 26:02Speaker 3: guy is winning that battle, and they haven't. Now, the
- 26:07Speaker 3: only way you can kind of win that battle is
- 26:08Speaker 3: forcing fumbles or getting to the ball, you know, in
- 26:11Speaker 3: the secondary and getting interception. But in terms of forcing fumbles,
- 26:14Speaker 3: that means you've got to be actually trying to tackle
- 26:16Speaker 3: a guy and making contact with him, and they're just
- 26:18Speaker 3: struggling with that. So I think it's going to be
- 26:20Speaker 3: a big week of back-to-basics. I wouldn't be shocked if
- 26:22Speaker 3: it's a lot of back-to-basics next week mixed in with
- 26:25Speaker 3: whatever Andy prep they have, too, because I feel like
- 26:28Speaker 3: that's what kind of Coach Pete is. We're just going
- 26:30Speaker 3: to have to take it back to football 101 in
- 26:32Speaker 3: a lot of different ways.
- 26:34Speaker 1: It's interesting for you to bring up tackling. We were
- 26:37Speaker 1: talking in the first or second segment today. John Summerall,
- 26:41Speaker 1: head football coach at Florida, was speaking about his week,
- 26:44Speaker 1: and he calls Tuesday Bloody Tuesday. to where he says, hey,
- 26:47Speaker 1: we don't go into the practice facility. We go outside
- 26:50Speaker 1: on the field. We don't even let the guys go indoor.
- 26:53Speaker 1: And we want it to be hot. We want it
- 26:55Speaker 1: to be physical. We want it to be nasty. And
- 26:56Speaker 1: I'm not saying Ole Miss doesn't do this. But I
- 26:58Speaker 1: know this. I know that– and you know this too.
- 27:00Speaker 1: From high school to college in the NFL, we've seen
- 27:04Speaker 1: a digression of sorts in tackling. And it's not just
- 27:08Speaker 1: Ole Miss specific. I mean, go to a high school
- 27:10Speaker 1: football game on Friday night and you'll probably see some
- 27:12Speaker 1: poor tackling where you go– Teams just don't get physical,
- 27:16Speaker 1: and I get it. You know, it's kind of that,
- 27:18Speaker 1: you know, where do you find that middle ground? I mean,
- 27:21Speaker 1: you don't want to take people to the ground every
- 27:23Speaker 1: day in practice because of injury, but I still think
- 27:26Speaker 1: there has to be some accountability and some physicality, and
- 27:29Speaker 1: John Summerall was talking about this, or you're not going
- 27:32Speaker 1: to be able to do it on Saturday.
- 27:34Speaker 3: Yeah, you know, I think that's kind of been a
- 27:36Speaker 3: knock for Ole Miss overall. for a while now is
- 27:38Speaker 3: we've kind of been hinted at or seen lack of
- 27:41Speaker 3: tackling in fall camp, preseason when we go, or even
- 27:44Speaker 3: in the spring. Now, the spring, you can probably get
- 27:47Speaker 3: away with it because you're sitting there saying, well, I'm
- 27:48Speaker 3: not playing a meaningful game for six more months from
- 27:51Speaker 3: now or five more months from now. But in the fall,
- 27:54Speaker 3: that has been a question that's been asked of whoever's
- 27:56Speaker 3: the head coach, Kiffin, Pete, Matt Luke, you name it.
- 28:00Speaker 3: It's been a thing where at Ole Miss, at least
- 28:02Speaker 3: from what we're watching here personally, it has been a
- 28:05Speaker 3: we'd rather keep the guy's bubble wrapped and go through
- 28:09Speaker 3: the motions and maybe ramp it up once or twice
- 28:11Speaker 3: in fall camp but then i think you're seeing where
- 28:13Speaker 3: they're just not going through a day in day out
- 28:16Speaker 3: and then they're just giving the effort that they've been
- 28:19Speaker 3: giving in fall camp now that's not me calling them
- 28:20Speaker 3: out that's just me saying that's the muscle memory for
- 28:23Speaker 3: lack of a better way to say it i think
- 28:24Speaker 3: there needs to be some kind of like you said
- 28:27Speaker 3: middle ground of going back to those old ways of
- 28:29Speaker 3: just tackling taking guys down in the practice field and
- 28:32Speaker 3: being physical again. It's one thing to say be physical
- 28:35Speaker 3: on Saturday when you're talking to them Tuesday and Wednesday,
- 28:38Speaker 3: but I think they need to actually be physical Tuesday, Wednesday,
- 28:41Speaker 3: and whatever other days to do it on Saturday. I
- 28:44Speaker 3: think it's kind of just that simple.
- 28:48Speaker 1: Make sure to get him on X, and you can
- 28:50Speaker 1: find him at JakeThompsonOE, a part of the Oxford Eagle,
- 28:53Speaker 1: covering Ole Miss and the SEC. Jake, appreciate your time.

- 30:40Speaker 1: like this weekend. Honestly, if we get the kind of
- 30:42Speaker 1: rain that we're supposed to get coming up this weekend,
- 30:45Speaker 1: whether that's, say, in some models, 3 inches, and look,
- 30:48Speaker 1: if you're going, I know Mississippi State and Alabama, that's
- 30:50Speaker 1: a big, big deal in Starville. That could be a
- 30:53Speaker 1: wet deal, and it could be a wet deal around
- 30:55Speaker 1: the SEC this weekend. Contact them today. Taylor, SuddenService.com, 601-922-4444. Hey,
- 31:02Speaker 1: how about these stats that may kind of blow your mind?
- 31:04Speaker 1: At least they blew my mind. Now, they don't say
- 31:06Speaker 1: a whole lot because I'm low on the information totem
- 31:08Speaker 1: pole anyway. But for those of you that are down
- 31:11Speaker 1: here with me, after 58 games at USC, that's the Trojans,
- 31:17Speaker 1: Lincoln Riley is 39-19. That's 58 games, 39 wins and
- 31:24Speaker 1: 19 losses after the loss to Oregon this past weekend.
- 31:28Speaker 1: Clay Helton, who was at USC, who is now at
- 31:32Speaker 1: Georgia Southern, or he's somewhere in one of those Sunbelt
- 31:36Speaker 1: schools in Georgia, was 39-19. He has the exact same
- 31:42Speaker 1: record as Clay Hilton. And they're paying him boo-coodles of money.
- 31:47Speaker 1: On the flip side of that, this one will really
- 31:51Speaker 1: get you. After 32 games at Alabama, Kalen DeBoer is 24-8.
- 31:57Speaker 1: The first 32 games at Alabama, Nick Saban was 24-8.
- 32:02Speaker 1: So at the exact same time in his career, Kalen
- 32:06Speaker 1: DeBoer is where Nick Saban was. Now, The difference is
- 32:10Speaker 1: Nick Saban took over a program at Alabama under Mike
- 32:14Speaker 1: Shula that was kind of floundering in the wilderness in
- 32:18Speaker 1: the SEC. Kalen DeBoer did not take that kind of
- 32:20Speaker 1: team over. So just some interesting nuggets there, and it's
- 32:23Speaker 1: weird how parallels kind of merge. Lincoln Riley, Clay Helton,
- 32:28Speaker 1: 39-19 after 58 games. Kalen DeBoer, Nick Saban, 24-8 after
- 32:33Speaker 1: 32 games at Alabama. All right, we're going to get
- 32:35Speaker 1: to this piece probably next segment. A former Auburn staffer.
- 32:39Speaker 1: has been arrested on charges of theft of trade secrets
- 32:42Speaker 1: and computer tampering. Quote, an anonymous Don Julio email was
- 32:47Speaker 1: sent to roughly 11 schools with 12 attachments. 10 contained
- 32:52Speaker 1: Auburn recruiting evaluations and notes on the 2027 to 2029
- 32:56Speaker 1: prospects for Auburn with several schools forwarding the material back
- 33:02Speaker 1: to Auburn. So the staffer, for whatever reason, had an
- 33:06Speaker 1: ax to grind with the the University of Auburn, may
- 33:10Speaker 1: have lost his job. Again, haven't read the piece. I
- 33:13Speaker 1: don't know if those details are in this piece, courtesy
- 33:15Speaker 1: of On3. com. But this staffer decides to send this material
- 33:22Speaker 1: out to 11 different schools on recruiting profiles and recruiting
- 33:26Speaker 1: strategy and all the stuff that Auburn's doing, not just
- 33:29Speaker 1: this year, 2027 to 2029. Because remember, these teams build
- 33:33Speaker 1: out recruiting profiles on a couple years in advance. That's
- 33:38Speaker 1: why you see a lot of guys, especially if they're
- 33:40Speaker 1: in the camp circuit and they're ninth graders, tenth graders,
- 33:44Speaker 1: and they're starting to get these offers. Well, that's the
- 33:47Speaker 1: strategy for two, three years down the road for those teams. So, hey, look,
- 33:50Speaker 1: we're going to go ahead and build our profile out
- 33:52Speaker 1: of quarterbacks that we're looking at, running backs we're looking at, linemen, corners, safeties,
- 33:58Speaker 1: whatever we're looking at, linebackers. But kudos to these schools.
- 34:03Speaker 1: They sent it back to Auburn. They could have capped it,
- 34:06Speaker 1: and they may have. Some probably did. But they went
- 34:08Speaker 1: and said, no, no, hey, guys, y'all have got a
- 34:11Speaker 1: rogue former employee over there. So this is a very
- 34:13Speaker 1: interesting story we'll get into. Also, now that basketball is here,
- 34:19Speaker 1: believe it or not, it is here because teams are
- 34:21Speaker 1: on the hardwood practicing. Now, we don't really turn into
- 34:23Speaker 1: basketball until the SEC slate or the conference slate because
- 34:26Speaker 1: football is front and center. You're starting to see now
- 34:29Speaker 1: the guys trying to come back to basketball because it
- 34:32Speaker 1: is that time. Florida guard Denzel Williams. Aberdeen has been
- 34:36Speaker 1: granted a temporary injunction against the NCAA and Aberdeen is
- 34:40Speaker 1: now eligible for a fifth season. So he's an intricate
- 34:43Speaker 1: part to that Florida basketball team last year. He's going
- 34:45Speaker 1: to get that fifth year. You're going to start seeing
- 34:47Speaker 1: these stories populate. And Nick Saban being questioned this week
- 34:52Speaker 1: on NIL because he is front and center on this
- 34:54Speaker 1: deal going on in D.C. And he's kind of a
- 34:57Speaker 1: face man. He's not kind of. He is one of
- 34:59Speaker 1: the face men for this Protect the College Sports Act
- 35:02Speaker 1: and wanting to trim this and trim that. Nick Saban
- 35:06Speaker 1: says NIL wasn't the reason for retirement. Remember, a lot
- 35:09Speaker 1: of people have had that theory that Saban retired because
- 35:14Speaker 1: NIL happened and the transfer portal happened. Nick Saban says, quote,
- 35:18Speaker 1: that's not why I got out of coaching. We had
- 35:20Speaker 1: three years of this. You know, my last three years,
- 35:23Speaker 1: I coached in the NFL, so I was used to
- 35:25Speaker 1: managing the salary cap and that type of thing. Saban added,
- 35:28Speaker 1: the one thing I didn't want to do is ride
- 35:31Speaker 1: the program down. And once you get to a certain age,
- 35:34Speaker 1: people start using that against you in recruiting and your
- 35:37Speaker 1: ability to attract the kind of players that you want
- 35:39Speaker 1: to attract. Now, I think it probably lays somewhere in
- 35:43Speaker 1: the middle for Nick Saban. I think he's telling half-truths
- 35:47Speaker 1: here because I don't think Nick Saban was of the age,
- 35:51Speaker 1: nor do I even think he's that. I know he
- 35:53Speaker 1: would be on that upper side of maybe even the
- 35:55Speaker 1: oldest coach in college football. But Nick Saban still looks
- 35:58Speaker 1: the part, talks the part, moves the part. that he
- 36:01Speaker 1: could have still done this. So maybe it was some
- 36:04Speaker 1: of that, but I do think part of it was
- 36:07Speaker 1: the NIL. And he would never say that publicly. He
- 36:09Speaker 1: would just never say that publicly. 601-885-3776. If you want
- 36:14Speaker 1: to shoot us a text, and you can always call us, 601-897-1059.
- 36:16Speaker 1: Excuse me. Still fighting a little bit of this head cold,
- 36:23Speaker 1: but we're going to make it through it as we
- 36:25Speaker 1: are on the mend. All right, after the conference admitted
- 36:29Speaker 1: Tennessee's late onside kick recovery against Texas was incorrectly officiated,
- 36:35Speaker 1: the next round it said they looked back at seven
- 36:38Speaker 1: notable instances in 2020 where the SEC later acknowledged its
- 36:41Speaker 1: officials got something wrong. Touchdowns, possessions, we may go through
- 36:45Speaker 1: some of that. And then also South Carolina is the
- 36:49Speaker 1: favorite against Kentucky via polymarket. 57% of the money is
- 36:52Speaker 1: coming in on South Carolina, 43% coming in on Kentucky.
- 36:56Speaker 1: But remember this. Kentucky has owned South Carolina over the
- 37:00Speaker 1: last several years. As a matter of fact, if we
- 37:03Speaker 1: go look at this real quick, and I'll pull this
- 37:05Speaker 1: up during the break, and we'll take a look at this.
- 37:09Speaker 1: Be careful on these popularity markets like Polymarket and Cousy
- 37:17Speaker 1: because I enjoy reading them like a lot of you do.
- 37:19Speaker 1: You've got to look at the trends and the numbers,
- 37:22Speaker 1: and we'll get into that and more. We're brought to
- 37:24Speaker 1: you by our friends at Ranco Transmission, 1460 Old Brandon
