- 0:12Hey. Welcome to Lavender Mind. I'm your host

- 0:29Today's episode is all about gratitude,
- 0:32and
- 0:33I
- 0:34did some research from Jim Quick. He's the
- 0:37author of, the limitless book. If you've never
- 0:40read that book. It's a really great book.
- 0:42It's on how to... He does a lot
- 0:43of research and reading faster, and he had
- 0:46a brain injury, and he has lots of
- 0:49habits
- 0:50to make yourself limitless and...
- 0:53It's all about great habits. But today, I
- 0:55wanna talk about gratitude and how not only
- 0:58does it help us to feel better and
- 1:01have more optimism, which who doesn't want more
- 1:03of that.
- 1:04It also helps
- 1:06improve frame function, and that's what I wanna
- 1:08take a little dive in today because I
- 1:11think it... You know, it's 1 thing when
- 1:13you know, like, oh, it's good to write
- 1:15the 3 things you're grateful for. Like, we
- 1:17hear that a lot and have a gratitude
- 1:19journal. You know, sometimes that can go in
- 1:211 ear and out the other. But today's
- 1:24episode really brings it home because it is
- 1:27all about the research that's been done on
- 1:30what actually happens in our brain. There's so
- 1:33much science
- 1:34around the way that our brains change
- 1:37when we practice Gratitude
- 1:39daily. And so I wanna jump in that
- 1:41today. Not only are we able to achieve
- 1:45more through gratitude and the way that it
- 1:48affects our brain. We have peace of mind.
- 1:50Helps us to feel better because of brain
- 1:53health, and the science around the gratitude
- 1:56is just amazing. And what we
- 2:00appreciate grows, and this is a way to
- 2:02practice ways to apply gratitude in your life.
- 2:05I have some tips that I'm gonna put
- 2:07at the end on how to apply this
- 2:10in your daily life. There are changes in
- 2:12the molecular
- 2:14structure of our brain. Our brains release
- 2:17dopamine and serotonin
- 2:19is transmitted,
- 2:20which is responsible for our motions. It makes
- 2:24us feel good and enhances
- 2:26our mood and helps us to be happier
- 2:29from the inside, and we have control over
- 2:32this regulation and this state of mind these
- 2:35emotions through practicing
- 2:38gratitude.
- 2:39Again, this is all studies that come from
- 2:42Jim Qui research and
- 2:45research that he follows
- 2:47about brain health and gratitude.
- 2:50It shows that just writing 3 things a
- 2:52day
- 2:53whatever you're grateful for can not only enhance
- 2:57your optimism, but also
- 2:59the quality of your life, but not just
- 3:01feeling good, but enhancing your brain function. I'm
- 3:04gonna list a few things that it affects.
- 3:06It's
- 3:07amazing what just a little bit of gratitude
- 3:10can do. And then we'll get into the
- 3:12tips of how to just incorporate this in
- 3:14your life every day. And not only helps
- 3:16us, but it helps everyone around us because
- 3:19it changes
- 3:20the way that we show up. So the
- 3:23first thing is that it's affected by gratitude
- 3:27is our decision making skills.
- 3:29It activates the prefrontal
- 3:31cortex.
- 3:32That is where decision making is held in
- 3:36the brain, and it enhances
- 3:38our decisions, which I know I can always
- 3:42use help with that because
- 3:44years ago, I could not even get a
- 3:46cup of coffee it would take me, like,
- 3:4720 minutes. And, like, I don't know, picking
- 3:49a pair of socks on Amazon can take
- 3:5145 minutes if you don't have good decision
- 3:54making skills, which because there are a lot
- 3:56of options in our amazing lives.
- 3:58You can go down the rabbit hole of
- 4:00Amazon quickly or any type of online shopping
- 4:03for sure. I try to steer clear. The
- 4:05second thing is that studies show that simply
- 4:09jot things down
- 4:10before you go to bed can help you
- 4:12sleep better. This actually reduces
- 4:15worry and rum illumination
- 4:17that keeps us up at night, so it
- 4:20is a healthy way to
- 4:22sleep better by thinking of things that you're
- 4:24grateful for before you go to bed. It
- 4:27helps self esteem. It improves
- 4:29and helps us not to have jealousy over
- 4:32other people rewire our brain to know that
- 4:35what we have
- 4:36helps us to focus on that and feel
- 4:38better and feel more grateful. When you start
- 4:40feeling more grateful,
- 4:42it just allows for a greater life because
- 4:45your brain is trained. It's like a muscle
- 4:47like anything else, once you start to think
- 4:50this way. These gracious grateful thoughts come easier.
- 4:54They flow better, and there's truly
- 4:57brain health there, those muscles in your brain
- 5:00are developed more. So when we start incorporating
- 5:02gratitude in our morning and our evening routine
- 5:05as a simple
- 5:06thing like a gratitude journal. It could be
- 5:09a dedicated book to keep you saying thank
- 5:11you to someone. You can also thank people
- 5:14in your day. You could keep notes in
- 5:16your phone. A physical book is always nice
- 5:19because you can go back and look at
- 5:20it and also the notes in your phone.
- 5:22You can do it mentally if you don't
- 5:24wanna have a physical book.
- 5:26I do recommend a physical book if you
- 5:28can, because then if you're having a really
- 5:30crummy day, you can just open that up
- 5:32and flip through and see all the things
- 5:34that are amazing in your life. The science
- 5:36behind all this. I said, it's a muscle.
- 5:38The more we use it, the easier it
- 5:41is and more naturally, it becomes. It just
- 5:43becomes who you are. It's not something that
- 5:45you have to think about. It's just the
- 5:47way your brain will begin to function if
- 5:49you practice it, and it helps us to
- 5:52be more resilient because
- 5:54powerful, mental health makes us more resilient. The
- 5:58science
- 5:59behind gratitude is that dopamine is dumped in
- 6:02the brain when we express gratitude at these
- 6:05neurotransmitters
- 6:06associated with satisfaction.
- 6:08So just doing these exercises lights up that
- 6:11area in our brain, and it allows those
- 6:14pathways to become stronger. The hypothalamus is associated
- 6:18with a higher amount of gray matter in
- 6:21the right inferior temporal g.
- 6:24Its gratitude is also the key to emotional
- 6:28regulation. It impacts the limbic system, which impacts
- 6:31our emotional experiences.
- 6:32Of empathy and self compassion,
- 6:35appreciation for things. It helps
- 6:38stress and anxiety,
- 6:40it mitigate depression. Gratitude has lasting effects on
- 6:43the brain. So once you start to do
- 6:45this, it's not something that goes away, it
- 6:47lasts, the brain could be trained to use
- 6:50gratitude, and so it is little by little
- 6:53built up and has lasting
- 6:55effects, and we're trained to be more sensitive
- 6:58to using g gratitude in the future. It's
- 7:01like it shines a little light on the
- 7:03particular
- 7:04activating system. We filter
- 7:06our information by using gratitude.
- 7:09Gratitude is inserted. It's good to ask yourself,
- 7:12What are you grateful for in the morning
- 7:14and in the app.
- 7:16Waking up as a gift and being able
- 7:18to move as a gift, the Mayo clinic
- 7:21has noted that stress and fear can suppress
- 7:24our immune system and that the more
- 7:28susceptible we can become to disease
- 7:30if we are not as grateful. And it's
- 7:33also noted that it helps reduce chronic pain,
- 7:38because when you refrain
- 7:39things in your mind, you're not as focused
- 7:41on the pain, and I can account to
- 7:43that firsthand for sure with,
- 7:45my experience of A when I was younger.
- 7:48That's kinda 1 of the reasons
- 7:50doing all this. Is 1 of the things
- 7:51that I really noticed
- 7:53throughout my life. So it it reduces health
- 7:55challenges,
- 7:56And
- 7:57again, overall happiness, it makes us happier and
- 8:00have improved
- 8:02relationships, and it helps us not focus on
- 8:04what we don't have, but what we can
- 8:05can troll, which is pretty awesome. So I'm
- 8:08gonna leave
- 8:10with some tips. I'm gonna go out with
- 8:12a few tips of how we can incorporate
- 8:14this in our lives
- 8:16again, it's free, super easy to do, and
- 8:19you can start building those muscles in your
- 8:21brain right now, like, right after this podcast.
- 8:24I encourage that. The first 1 is to
- 8:27schedule gratitude
- 8:29to start your day off, reflect on what
- 8:31you're grateful for. I always say before your
- 8:34Toot c's hit the floor, think of some
- 8:36things that you're grateful for.
- 8:38And, you know, why wait to do this?
- 8:40Because You never know and this can really
- 8:42affect your life in such an amazing way.
- 8:44Don't put it off,
- 8:46and it doesn't take time to do it.
- 8:49So The second thing is to review your
- 8:52day
- 8:52before bed, think about and reflect on something
- 8:56cool that happened during your day, maybe somebody
- 8:59opened your door. It doesn't have to be
- 9:00anything big. Maybe you had an amazing dinner.
- 9:03My husband went fishing, and we had some
- 9:05delicious fish last night. I so good with
- 9:07some mango salsa, yummy.
- 9:09So I was grateful for that dinner. I
- 9:11was thinking about that before I went to
- 9:13bed. Anything little.
- 9:16Just any type of reflection of your day
- 9:18before you go to bed. And this... Like
- 9:20I said, studies are showing that the... These
- 9:23type of thought can help you go to
- 9:25bed and help with rum nation
- 9:27because it sets your mind in a different
- 9:30pathway.
- 9:30And who are you grateful for? I know
- 9:33we can be grateful for our friends, colleagues,
- 9:36kids.
- 9:36It's really important to tell people that we're
- 9:39grateful for them. The third thing is nature.
- 9:42The beauty of outside can foster gratitude for
- 9:45life. You know, if you live near a
- 9:46beach, how lucky your you. You can look
- 9:48at that water every day and just be
- 9:50thankful full for the creation of it, but
- 9:52you don't have to live near Beach,
- 9:54even if you have a park or a
- 9:56window which is some beautiful green grass out
- 9:58side or snow, whatever you have at this
- 10:01time of year. This always resets our perspective.
- 10:04It's just like a little reset button. I've
- 10:06joked about taking the trash out because it
- 10:08gets me outside and I love nature, so
- 10:11any excuse to be outside, cutting the grass
- 10:14any any anytime to be out in nature,
- 10:16it can really press that reset button and
- 10:19help us to have some gratitude. The fourth
- 10:21thing is giving and kindness
- 10:23It's always nice. We never know what other
- 10:25people are going through and just an act
- 10:27kindness every single day, really boosts
- 10:31dopamine by helping someone else. We're also helping
- 10:34our own brain health. It just feels really
- 10:36good to help others. It's always fun to
- 10:38buy somebody's these coffee behind you or just
- 10:40open a door or if it doesn't scare
- 10:43an old lady, helper her, you know, bag
- 10:45up her stuff, what whatever you can do
- 10:47to help others.
- 10:49And help them have some gratitude in their
- 10:51day. The fifth thing is, you know, just
- 10:54remembering that it's the little things. You know,
- 10:56life really is all about the little things
- 10:59that we're grateful for and really soaking life
- 11:02up, really experiencing the little things like a
- 11:05hug, our beds, water, our legs, if we
- 11:08have them sharing with someone that you love,
- 11:11which you're thankful for. He can always just
- 11:13have a little sentence of texting someone or
- 11:16telling someone.
- 11:17I love how you blank or you are
- 11:20the best blank. So those are some ideas
- 11:23in this of gratitude. Thank you for being
- 11:25here here to make a difference since someone's
- 11:28life today, and I hope that you can
- 11:30spread some gratitude. This is a great thing
- 11:32to spread. It's like the butterfly effect. So
- 11:35let's start a trend and
- 11:38together, lettuce us plant some seeds of resilience,
- 11:41and joy, have an amazing day.
