- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello everybody, and welcome to another edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Jim Hayes with Kyle Gibson, who is with his family
- 0:14Speaker 1: and his wife is driving, So we will title this
- 0:17Speaker 1: episode driving Miss Kylie. Is that a good one? Kyle?
- 0:22Speaker 1: Is that okay?
- 0:24Speaker 2: That'll work? That'll work. We got we got a big
- 0:27Speaker 2: tent scenario going back here, so that you know they're
- 0:31Speaker 2: they want their privacy while we're driving. So we've already
- 0:35Speaker 2: had our lunch, So delaying the recording here allowed us
- 0:38Speaker 2: to have our lunch, and we'll just see how many
- 0:42Speaker 2: car arguments we have in the middle of this episode.
- 0:47Speaker 2: So if my camera goes black and I'm muted all
- 0:50Speaker 2: of a sudden, that's.
- 0:51Speaker 1: Why I like it. Well, I appreciate you've been with us.
- 0:55Speaker 1: Car's playing two in Sinci today and now won four
- 0:59Speaker 1: straight series ever since the trade deadline, two games over
- 1:03Speaker 1: five hundred. I gotta say, though, who was it? One
- 1:07Speaker 1: of the card The relievers said that they sense it was.
- 1:10Speaker 1: Stanett said they sense before the deadline that the team,
- 1:16Speaker 1: because there's so many young guys that hadn't been through this,
- 1:19Speaker 1: might have been a little distracted by it. And he
- 1:22Speaker 1: said he felt the energy return once they got through
- 1:24Speaker 1: the deadline, and a couple of guys were like, that's
- 1:27Speaker 1: not true, that's not true, but they are playing better
- 1:30Speaker 1: baseball since the deadline. Do you think there could be
- 1:33Speaker 1: anything to that, Kyle.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Gibson, I think there can be something to it, whether
- 1:39Speaker 2: it is you know, full on distracted or even if
- 1:44Speaker 2: it is waiting to see what the plan is gonna be,
- 1:48Speaker 2: and then you at least have a clear vision going
- 1:51Speaker 2: forward of who's on the team, who's not on the team,
- 1:55Speaker 2: and there's no waiting to see what happens, all right,
- 1:58Speaker 2: So that can really kind of help out as well.
- 2:02Speaker 2: Now why other guys on a minute, nobody wants to
- 2:04Speaker 2: admit that, you know, outside factors have the ability to
- 2:07Speaker 2: distract you and take your attention away. But I think
- 2:14Speaker 2: knowing the direction of the team for the next two
- 2:17Speaker 2: months can be a really helpful thing to kind of
- 2:20Speaker 2: clear heads and let them know what directions they're I liked.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Her and they did. Add Joshua Bias. Finally, and his
- 2:31Speaker 1: very first major league game, not one, not two, three homers.
- 2:37Speaker 1: He didn't just carve out a little piece of history, right,
- 2:41Speaker 1: He took a stone, a tablet, and he chiseled out
- 2:45Speaker 1: a whole chapter in baseball history. We're waiting to see
- 2:48Speaker 1: this guy. He was a monster at Triple A, thirty
- 2:51Speaker 1: plus homers. He comes up. Every Cardinal fan wants to
- 2:55Speaker 1: see what this guy is and kab boom. Just your
- 2:59Speaker 1: thoughts on that.
- 3:01Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I understand that Cardinals fans, you know,
- 3:04Speaker 2: probably wanted him there out of spring training. You know,
- 3:07Speaker 2: I think we heard some talk about why as bias
- 3:10Speaker 2: not up here. I think the other thing that probably
- 3:12Speaker 2: slowed him up a little bit was new Bar played
- 3:16Speaker 2: a very good defensive outfield, and he also hit the
- 3:20Speaker 2: ball pretty well when he was back in the lineup
- 3:22Speaker 2: from his injury. So I think you had to give
- 3:25Speaker 2: Newt a chance to play, and to give him a
- 3:28Speaker 2: chance to show that he's healthy and show what he
- 3:31Speaker 2: can do. And then once you got to August first,
- 3:35Speaker 2: you know, every player has a number of games and
- 3:38Speaker 2: at bats that takes away rookie status and you know,
- 3:42Speaker 2: and ads not only service time, but just other factors
- 3:45Speaker 2: to it. Once you get to August first, it's kind
- 3:49Speaker 2: of like waiting the first seventeen days of the season
- 3:52Speaker 2: to make sure a guy is a Super two instead
- 3:54Speaker 2: of getting a full year of service, so everybody knew
- 3:58Speaker 2: I think probably July fifteenth through July first, that he
- 4:01Speaker 2: was ready to come up. He had twenty five homers
- 4:03Speaker 2: at the time, so I don't think there's a question there.
- 4:06Speaker 2: Timing of this ended up being just what the offense needed,
- 4:11Speaker 2: being a little shot in the arm going into Chicago
- 4:14Speaker 2: and then went three out of four and now they're
- 4:16Speaker 2: going to another hitter's ballpark. And Kyle Schwarber always used
- 4:20Speaker 2: to say, make sure you don't leave Cincinnati without a homer.
- 4:23Speaker 2: So let's see a Bias can get one or two
- 4:24Speaker 2: while he's there too.
- 4:27Speaker 1: He hit a fastball, a change up, and a slider.
- 4:30Speaker 1: Now the I think the book on him is he's
- 4:34Speaker 1: gonna see all breaking pitches. Well, guess what, he hit
- 4:38Speaker 1: some of those right. And look the next day he
- 4:41Speaker 1: took an o for I get that. But to have
- 4:44Speaker 1: that kind of pressure, those kind of expectations and then
- 4:48Speaker 1: to deliver in the way he did, really impress.
- 4:51Speaker 2: It very impressive. You know, anytime you do something that's
- 4:56Speaker 2: never been done in the game, I think that's pretty crazy,
- 5:00Speaker 2: and when it's on your first day in the game,
- 5:04Speaker 2: even more oppressive and even crazier. So I think that
- 5:07Speaker 2: is definitely a cool stat as well or a cool
- 5:10Speaker 2: fun fact that he did it on three different pitches.
- 5:13Speaker 2: I think it's something that he is going to have
- 5:15Speaker 2: to really pay attention to how guys are pitching him.
- 5:20Speaker 2: I don't know much about him. He could be a
- 5:22Speaker 2: very The Cardinals could be developing more cerebral hitters that
- 5:28Speaker 2: have a really good idea of the plan and a
- 5:30Speaker 2: really good idea of not only their strengths, but preparing
- 5:33Speaker 2: them for pitchers. And if that's the case, then we're
- 5:36Speaker 2: going to see more young guys come up ready to
- 5:38Speaker 2: hit and ready to make those adjustments.
- 5:43Speaker 1: You know, there's an emotional side to every kid's first
- 5:46Speaker 1: crack at the big leagues. But for Bias, you know,
- 5:50Speaker 1: close with his pop. He promised his pop before his
- 5:52Speaker 1: dad died, I will get to the big leagues for you.
- 5:56Speaker 1: He had thirty family members on the field with him.
- 5:59Speaker 1: Would you see stuff like that? It makes you love
- 6:02Speaker 1: baseball even more because there are so many stories about
- 6:06Speaker 1: overcoming obstacles and getting to where you worked your entire
- 6:12Speaker 1: life to get to where you wanted to be.
- 6:17Speaker 2: Well, I didn't realize he had thirty people there. That's
- 6:21Speaker 2: really that's pretty special. I was really fortunate in twenty thirteen,
- 6:26Speaker 2: the team gave me They called me up four days
- 6:29Speaker 2: before my start, so I knew I was starting in Minnesota,
- 6:34Speaker 2: I knew when it was going to be and I
- 6:36Speaker 2: don't know, I'd have to go back and think about
- 6:38Speaker 2: how many people were there. But it was really cool
- 6:41Speaker 2: because a lot of people were able to make that
- 6:43Speaker 2: drive from Indiana or Saint Louis, and I had a
- 6:46Speaker 2: lot of friends and family there, and it was more
- 6:48Speaker 2: than I even realized. I was able to say hello
- 6:50Speaker 2: to high school teammates when I was walking out to
- 6:53Speaker 2: pitch right. So for Bias to have that many people there,
- 6:57Speaker 2: it seems like maybe the Cardinals gave him a little
- 6:59Speaker 2: bit of heads up. Maybe he had, you know, a
- 7:02Speaker 2: day or two to to kind of prepare for that.
- 7:06Speaker 2: But that makes it even more special to have that
- 7:09Speaker 2: many people there watching you do something for the first
- 7:12Speaker 2: time and do it with so much success. Adding to
- 7:15Speaker 2: the fact that you know, his dad's no longer with him,
- 7:18Speaker 2: you know, I thought it was a pretty cool story
- 7:21Speaker 2: that he started talking about, you know, the almost the
- 7:24Speaker 2: whole game. He had this bee that wasn't leaving him alone. Uh,
- 7:27Speaker 2: and you know it kind of it just reminded him
- 7:29Speaker 2: constantly that, you know what, even though Dad's not here, Uh,
- 7:33Speaker 2: you know, it's just a reminder that he's watching and
- 7:36Speaker 2: he's with him in spirits. So a really cool part
- 7:39Speaker 2: to that story, and I'm pretty happy for Kim.
- 7:41Speaker 1: It's really cool. Right. Let's say you're a veteran pitcher
- 7:45Speaker 1: and you're facing a young player making his big league debut,
- 7:49Speaker 1: and you know that this guy is a home run hitter.
- 7:54Speaker 1: You don't want to be part of that story. You
- 7:56Speaker 1: don't want to be part of history. How how do
- 7:59Speaker 1: you attack a young hitter like that, knowing the tools
- 8:02Speaker 1: that he has.
- 8:04Speaker 2: I'm really trying. I'm trying to rack my brain when
- 8:06Speaker 2: I saw you know what we were gonna talk about today.
- 8:08Speaker 2: I can't remember. If I can't off anybody's first home run.
- 8:12Speaker 2: I know I give up a couple of first tits.
- 8:13Speaker 2: I think I might have given up Dancy Swanson first hit.
- 8:17Speaker 2: So I was a part of that a little bit.
- 8:18Speaker 2: But when you're facing hitters for the first time, I
- 8:25Speaker 2: think the advantage does go to the picture because at
- 8:27Speaker 2: least we can see some video on how they swing.
- 8:30Speaker 2: In the minor leagues, and you can tell a lot
- 8:33Speaker 2: from a guy how he swings at certain pitches, maybe
- 8:37Speaker 2: how you want to attack the hitter with your strengths,
- 8:41Speaker 2: and when it's somebody that has, you know, the notable
- 8:45Speaker 2: power that bias has, you're you know, I know I
- 8:49Speaker 2: heard Boyd talk about how you know he's gonna attack hitters.
- 8:51Speaker 2: You know, no matter what, you're still trying to find
- 8:54Speaker 2: those areas where he doesn't have the sluck. You're still
- 8:57Speaker 2: still trying to make sure you can avoid those parts
- 9:01Speaker 2: of the swing. So but at the end of the day,
- 9:04Speaker 2: when when you go back and forth and you're coming
- 9:07Speaker 2: up with a plan your playing, it's still your strengths
- 9:10Speaker 2: and then you kind of see off of a couple
- 9:13Speaker 2: of swings against your stuff what you can do from there.
- 9:16Speaker 1: All right, we're gonna take a break here. You're watching
- 9:18Speaker 1: Cardinal Territory on the Foul Territory Network.
- 9:23Speaker 3: Hey, for those of you that are on your phone,
- 9:25Speaker 3: it's very often or even if you don't use it much,
- 9:28Speaker 3: you should check out your wireless bill and make sure
- 9:30Speaker 3: that it is treating you well. It's summertime. You're feeling good, right,
- 9:34Speaker 3: aj but are you spending too much on your wireless
- 9:37Speaker 3: bill and should mint mobile get involved.
- 9:39Speaker 4: Some of them has two college aged kids, Scott. They're
- 9:42Speaker 4: always on their phone, whether it's they're checking their Snap,
- 9:44Speaker 4: they're checking their DMS, they're checking their Twitter. I need
- 9:48Speaker 4: fifteen dollars a month because I need unlimited quality coverage
- 9:51Speaker 4: that mint mobile provides.
- 9:52Speaker 3: They get that new wireless plan for just fifteen bucks
- 9:55Speaker 3: a month. Go to mintmobile dot com slash territory. That's
- 9:58Speaker 3: mintmobile dot com slash territory. You cut your wireless bill
- 10:01Speaker 3: to fifteen dollars a month at mintmobile dot com slash territory.
- 10:04Speaker 3: That's it. No catch upfront payment of forty five dollars
- 10:06Speaker 3: for three months, ninety dollars for six months, or one
- 10:08Speaker 3: hundred eighty dollars for twelve month. Plan required fifteen dollars
- 10:11Speaker 3: per month, equivalent taxes and fees extra initial plan term
- 10:14Speaker 3: only greater than fifty gigabytes may slow when network is busy.
- 10:16Speaker 3: Includes up to twenty gigabyte hotspot capable device required, availability,
- 10:20Speaker 3: speed and coverage barriers cementmobile dot com.
- 10:22Speaker 1: So the Cardinals in Cincinnati, they are at Great American Ballpark,
- 10:26Speaker 1: which is a band box balls tend to fly out
- 10:29Speaker 1: of there. Hopefully the Cardinals can pick up a bunch
- 10:32Speaker 1: of wins because the Reds have a terrible, terrible bullpen,
- 10:37Speaker 1: so hopefully they can get into the Reds bullpen. But
- 10:40Speaker 1: Kyle gives them. When you're pitching in a place maybe
- 10:43Speaker 1: it's rigly with the wins going crazy, you don't know,
- 10:46Speaker 1: or a place like Cincy where balls fly, do you
- 10:49Speaker 1: change your approach or do you have to stick to
- 10:53Speaker 1: what got you to the big leagues and gave you success.
- 10:57Speaker 2: Yeah. I was fortunate ta able to to be able
- 11:00Speaker 2: to stick to my approach for the most part. You know,
- 11:02Speaker 2: I lived at the bottom of the zone and and
- 11:05Speaker 2: you know, really for the most part, try to keep
- 11:08Speaker 2: did an okay job for the most part my career,
- 11:10Speaker 2: keeping the ball in the ballpark. So that's that was
- 11:12Speaker 2: kind of the goal is one. You don't want to
- 11:15Speaker 2: give away free passes in Cincinnati because there are gonna
- 11:18Speaker 2: be home runs hit, you know, unless both teams go
- 11:21Speaker 2: cold or the pitchers just lights out, So you don't
- 11:23Speaker 2: wanna you don't want to give away free passes and
- 11:25Speaker 2: make the solo a two run homer. And I think
- 11:29Speaker 2: it's it's just a little bit more important to find
- 11:32Speaker 2: for me was where is this guy's exit velo hotspots?
- 11:38Speaker 2: Where where can I get the ground balls? Where does he,
- 11:42Speaker 2: you know, really struggle to hit the ball hard, And
- 11:47Speaker 2: then I can kind of attack those spots and and
- 11:50Speaker 2: take away some of the chances where he gets the
- 11:53Speaker 2: barrel to it in a one arm flick out the
- 11:55Speaker 2: right field. So it's it's uh. I enjoy pitching there though,
- 12:00Speaker 2: about an hour and forty five minutes from my hometown,
- 12:02Speaker 2: so I always had friends and family there, and I
- 12:05Speaker 2: had a couple of decent starts there. So but I
- 12:09Speaker 2: got betten by the Grand American Ballpark hober every now,
- 12:12Speaker 2: and I know.
- 12:15Speaker 1: It's rough, all right. So I want to ask you
- 12:17Speaker 1: about the Cardinals starting rotation because they'll be put up
- 12:21Speaker 1: against it in Cincinnata. Every picture is and that's been
- 12:25Speaker 1: really good. And if you look at what the Cardinals
- 12:27Speaker 1: are doing, yeah, they've had offensive explosions. Bias was great,
- 12:31Speaker 1: Walker and Burley are on a binge, no question about it.
- 12:35Speaker 1: But Dobbins was solid the other day. Lady has given
- 12:40Speaker 1: up more than two runs and nine straight starts. Polante
- 12:43Speaker 1: has become a legitimate front of the rotation guy Magrievous
- 12:48Speaker 1: holding up well despite the innings starting to pile up
- 12:51Speaker 1: for him. How good has this rotation been and does
- 12:54Speaker 1: it make you think, well, going forward, the Cardinals are
- 12:58Speaker 1: developing in house what they need to get him to
- 13:00Speaker 1: the next level.
- 13:02Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, it's it's definitely encouraging. It's encouraging that
- 13:07Speaker 2: it's quite a few young guys that are going to
- 13:09Speaker 2: be there for the next few years as well. And
- 13:11Speaker 2: it's not just guys who are in you know, five
- 13:14Speaker 2: six years of team control and and now they're gonna
- 13:17Speaker 2: be free agents. So that's exciting. In the month of August,
- 13:22Speaker 2: or excuse me, the month of July, I think it
- 13:26Speaker 2: was in the minor leagues, he went six or seven
- 13:28Speaker 2: innies in all four starts and didn't give up more
- 13:30Speaker 2: than two runs. So, and he was doing it with
- 13:34Speaker 2: swinging miss and not very many hits. So I think,
- 13:38Speaker 2: you know, he's throwing the ball really well, and he
- 13:41Speaker 2: has to be feeling good about his stuff. So I
- 13:42Speaker 2: think it's a good time for him to come in
- 13:44Speaker 2: the rotation, you know, in Cincinnati. If he can use
- 13:47Speaker 2: that swinging miss stuff and you know, limit walks, I
- 13:50Speaker 2: think he'll have hopefully a good outing today against this
- 13:54Speaker 2: left handed lineup as well. I know they've got some
- 13:56Speaker 2: switch hitters too, but you know, I just think it
- 14:00Speaker 2: hopefully matches up well for him in the starting rotation.
- 14:03Speaker 1: In this series, Quinn looked good and is you know,
- 14:06Speaker 1: one major league out and and if you look at
- 14:09Speaker 1: his numbers in the minors, like you said, he's coming
- 14:11Speaker 1: on the walks seem to be still something that he's
- 14:14Speaker 1: gonna battle, right, And I don't know as a as
- 14:17Speaker 1: a guy who's going already's building a resume as a
- 14:20Speaker 1: professional baseball player, I know how you how you do that?
- 14:22Speaker 1: How do you fix a guy who because obviously he's
- 14:25Speaker 1: got swing of his stuff, so he's probably going for chases,
- 14:28Speaker 1: but how do you how do you try to limit that? Uh?
- 14:33Speaker 2: I think the last three teams I was with the Cardinals,
- 14:37Speaker 2: you know, fitting in this group, throwing strike one was
- 14:41Speaker 2: just a premium and and it was I know that
- 14:45Speaker 2: sounds very elementary, but it's it's to the point where
- 14:49Speaker 2: they're like, guys, we are seventeenth in first pitch strikes
- 14:53Speaker 2: over the last two weeks. We have to be better,
- 14:55Speaker 2: right it is? We want to be top five in
- 14:57Speaker 2: first pitch strikes and that's gonna lead to being top
- 15:01Speaker 2: five in the least amount of walks, right, So I
- 15:04Speaker 2: think it will just be some conversations with Dusty and
- 15:08Speaker 2: as he sees his stuff play in the big leagues,
- 15:10Speaker 2: and quite frankly, he's gonna see more hitters that have
- 15:12Speaker 2: a better approach in the big leagues. And I actually
- 15:15Speaker 2: think that helps a young pitcher.
- 15:18Speaker 1: Would you are with the family and you pack up
- 15:21Speaker 1: the family trucksure for a road trip, what snacks do
- 15:24Speaker 1: you get? I'm just curious snacks here.
- 15:29Speaker 2: Let's see, Well, we stopped we were leaving right at
- 15:33Speaker 2: lunch time, so we stopped at a Hancock County favorite
- 15:40Speaker 2: Frosty Boy. That's what we got. Chicken tenders and burgers
- 15:43Speaker 2: for lunch. The snack bag. Snack bags include some apple
- 15:49Speaker 2: sauce packs. We got fruits and veggies in the cooler.
- 15:53Speaker 2: Our kids love sweet peppers, so we got sweet pepper slices.
- 15:57Speaker 2: We got oranges. Yeah, so we got a good little
- 16:01Speaker 2: snackback going. But my wife handles. Elizabeth handles all that
- 16:05Speaker 2: she's studying nutrition and fitness in college house her major,
- 16:09Speaker 2: and she sets the kids up for hopefully some healthy
- 16:13Speaker 2: snacks on the roads.
- 16:13Speaker 1: Here, nice, do me a favor. We're going to head
- 16:16Speaker 1: to our final break. While we're doing that, thank Elizabeth
- 16:19Speaker 1: for driving. You're watching Cardinal Territory on the Foul Territory Network.

- 17:25Speaker 1: I don't know what the Cardinals plans, you know now
- 17:28Speaker 1: going forward, but you might see a guy come up.
- 17:31Speaker 1: I would like to see Nolan Gorman. I don't know
- 17:34Speaker 1: about you, uh Blaze. Jordan's done a pretty good job
- 17:37Speaker 1: at third, but you get a right he lefty in there.
- 17:40Speaker 1: I would I don't know what benefit there is with
- 17:44Speaker 1: Gorman and the miners, you know, and he's not he's
- 17:47Speaker 1: hitting below two hundred. A lot of homers. Bring him up,
- 17:50Speaker 1: see what he can do. That's what i'd like to see.
- 17:52Speaker 1: What would you like to see?
- 17:55Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I think that's I think that's a
- 17:57Speaker 2: good idea. I think he's some that has a lot
- 18:02Speaker 2: of MLB experience as well. His defense at there has
- 18:05Speaker 2: been pretty good as well. I still think you want
- 18:09Speaker 2: to make decisions obviously for the future in mind, and
- 18:11Speaker 2: it has to be some of defense as well in
- 18:13Speaker 2: mine because I think the pitching staff in general a
- 18:17Speaker 2: good defense is also helping these guys, So I think
- 18:21Speaker 2: you don't want to lose that, and I think Gorman
- 18:24Speaker 2: can do both of those things for you, and now
- 18:25Speaker 2: I think you have a really good idea of what
- 18:29Speaker 2: his status with the team going forward looks like. You know,
- 18:34Speaker 2: he's gonna be somebody that you have to make a
- 18:36Speaker 2: decision on here, probably this offseason, because you're gonna need
- 18:40Speaker 2: forty man spots and uh, you know, at some point
- 18:44Speaker 2: you're gonna hopefully add guys to the major league roster too,
- 18:47Speaker 2: So it could be interesting. But I think I think
- 18:52Speaker 2: him coming up and getting another chance to see if
- 18:54Speaker 2: the adjustments he's making are helping is important.
- 18:58Speaker 1: Another guy, Victor Scott, the second quietly offensive, numbers a
- 19:02Speaker 1: little better at Memphis. I saw he made a great
- 19:05Speaker 1: catch at the wall, Robin a home run the other day. Look,
- 19:08Speaker 1: these are guys I think fans want to see. And
- 19:10Speaker 1: with Gorman, I believe that there's some other team out
- 19:14Speaker 1: there in major League Baseball, maybe not at the major
- 19:16Speaker 1: league level, we'll be interested with a guy who's got
- 19:19Speaker 1: a power resume because teams are always looking for that.
- 19:22Speaker 1: I hope it all works out. Kyle. Thank you to
- 19:25Speaker 1: your wife, Elizabeth and your kids for bearing with us
- 19:28Speaker 1: on this. I'm glad to see that you have healthy snacks,
- 19:31Speaker 1: and that's gonna do it for this edition of Cardinal Territory.
- 19:35Speaker 1: We'll see you for the next edition, and hopefully that
- 19:37Speaker 1: one won't suck.
