- 0:22SPEAKER_00: For most people, running a marathon is a pretty big deal.
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: The distance of 26.2 miles is a long way for one person to run in a single shot.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: So how do people actually pull it off?
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: What's the process for actually completing a marathon?
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Well, let's start with the obvious.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: If you break down a marathon into smaller sections, you come up with a certain number of miles, 26.2 of them to be exact.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: And then you can break down those into half miles or quarter miles or even smaller distances if you want to.
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: But what is the simplest singular motion that causes a runner to complete a marathon?
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: That motion is a single stride.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: And for the average person, a single stride is between 2.1 and 2.5 feet.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: So it takes the average runner somewhere between 55,000 and 63,000 strides to complete a marathon.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: It sounds like a lot, doesn't it?
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: Well, maybe so, but now you have a specific number that you can get your head around if you're training for a marathon.
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Now, interestingly, the number of words in an average nonfiction book is around 50,000 words or so.
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: So you can think of writing a book almost like running a marathon.
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: Every word is a stride.
- 1:37SPEAKER_00: So how does a runner complete a marathon and how does a writer complete a book?
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: Well, the answer is you keep moving no matter what.
- 1:44SPEAKER_00: The screenwriter and producer Brian Koppelman said, resilience is a writer's best friend.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Train like a marathon runner.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: Move a little further each day despite the pain.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: You know, there's no special trick to writing a book or running a marathon.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: It's all about training, persistence, and action.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: Put one word after another and keep moving until you reach the finish line.
- 2:07SPEAKER_00: Here's today's question.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: In your book project or other writing-related work, are you committed to keeping on moving until you reach the finish line?
