Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: CBD.
- 0:00Speaker 2: A lot of people say snake oil type claims it's
- 0:03Speaker 2: a cure all, etc. It's a tool in the toolbox
- 0:06Speaker 2: that can complement your wellness routines. It is not going
- 0:10Speaker 2: to be the silver bullet, the hard push, the cure,
- 0:14Speaker 2: all one and done. And I also hate solutions that
- 0:18Speaker 2: aggressively overbalance because if you're seeing symptoms arise, typically it's
- 0:24Speaker 2: from small changes that can create compounding effects over time.
- 0:43Speaker 3: Hey everyone, Emily a body here bringing you another installment
- 0:46Speaker 3: of Hurdle moment from Hurdle on today's show. I am
- 0:50Speaker 3: chatting to you all about CBD.
- 0:53Speaker 4: That's right.
- 0:53Speaker 3: I am answering your big CBD questions with the help
- 0:58Speaker 3: of Max Pulling, the director of Innovation at Beam.
- 1:02Speaker 4: Now. I know Beam may.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Sound familiar to you, and that is because Beam is
- 1:07Speaker 3: a long time sponsor of the show and a partner
- 1:11Speaker 3: of mine. But I knew I had to go to
- 1:14Speaker 3: the experts to get the details on what we needed
- 1:18Speaker 3: to know. Here is what I know going into this conversation.
- 1:22Speaker 4: A couple of things. Actually, I know a few things.
- 1:24Speaker 3: The first thing that I know is that at this point,
- 1:27Speaker 3: according to a twenty nineteen Gallup poll, sixty four percent
- 1:31Speaker 3: of Americans are familiar with CBD and or CBD products.
- 1:36Speaker 3: According to twenty nineteen research from Consumer Reports and estimated
- 1:40Speaker 3: sixty four million Americans, sixty four million have tried CBD
- 1:46Speaker 3: in the last twenty four months.
- 1:49Speaker 4: Of those who use.
- 1:50Speaker 3: CBD, twenty two percent said it helped them supplement or
- 1:54Speaker 3: replace prescriptions or over the counter options.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Here's my take on CBD.
- 2:00Speaker 3: I was hesitant on the whole shebang because I didn't
- 2:03Speaker 3: like that I didn't exactly know what I was putting
- 2:05Speaker 3: into my body. Thankfully, Max helps to shed a lot
- 2:08Speaker 3: of light on exactly what CBD is, the different ways
- 2:12Speaker 3: that we can use CBD, and the potential benefits that
- 2:15Speaker 3: it can have. He's also really transparent on the fact
- 2:18Speaker 3: that there is a lot of research to be done,
- 2:20Speaker 3: and we talk about why that is. Why isn't there
- 2:23Speaker 3: more research on CBD when it is such a thriving industry.
- 2:27Speaker 3: I actually found statistics online that in twenty nineteen, the
- 2:30Speaker 3: consumer sales of CBD products was eight hundred and forty
- 2:35Speaker 3: five million dollars. In twenty twenty one, it is projected
- 2:40Speaker 3: to go up to one point six billion.
- 2:45Speaker 4: I know, it's insane, so it's important that we learn
- 2:48Speaker 4: about it.
- 2:48Speaker 3: I'm grateful to Max for all of his helpful intel,
- 2:51Speaker 3: of course, because Beam is a partner. If you are
- 2:54Speaker 3: interested in getting in on the CBD game after listening
- 2:58Speaker 3: to this episode, I have a discount for you. Head
- 3:00Speaker 3: on over to BEAMTLC dot com. That's e E A
- 3:03Speaker 3: m TLC dot com and use the code Hurdle at
- 3:06Speaker 3: checkout for at least fifteen percent off. And I say
- 3:09Speaker 3: it like that because if you go for a subscription,
- 3:12Speaker 3: which is already twenty percent off, then you can get
- 3:15Speaker 3: up to a thirty five percent discount. My personal favorites
- 3:19Speaker 3: the Beam Dream powder. It tastes like a delicious cinnamon
- 3:23Speaker 3: hot chocolate. It helps me sleep better, a great combination
- 3:26Speaker 3: of their nano CBDBSHI, lcnin, magnesium, melatonin, so much good
- 3:30Speaker 3: stuff in there. And also, I love, love love their
- 3:33Speaker 3: focus capsules which help me just get in my groove
- 3:37Speaker 3: during the workday.
- 3:39Speaker 4: Like I said, I learned a lot in this episode.
- 3:41Speaker 4: You got to stick with it.
- 3:42Speaker 3: I know that there are some big words here. Props
- 3:45Speaker 3: to Max for knowing how to pronounce all of them.
- 3:48Speaker 3: A lot of great info to help us make more
- 3:50Speaker 3: informed decisions.
- 3:52Speaker 4: Going forward.
- 3:53Speaker 3: Shout out to the Hurdle book Club if you are
- 3:55Speaker 3: listening to this on release day, we are meeting tonight
- 3:58Speaker 3: on April twenty first, Really looking forward to that. The
- 4:01Speaker 3: link to register if you haven't done so yet is
- 4:03Speaker 3: in at the show notes. Also, make sure you're following
- 4:05Speaker 3: along with Hurdle on social media. I have been getting
- 4:09Speaker 3: after that at Hurdle Podcast, Instagram, game, and I would
- 4:13Speaker 3: love for you to double tap to message to DM
- 4:17Speaker 3: to repost all the things. It's the best. I love
- 4:20Speaker 3: interacting with you guys. My gratitude is off the charts
- 4:24Speaker 3: with that. Let's get to hurdling today. I am sitting
- 4:34Speaker 3: down with Max Pulling. He is the director of Innovation
- 4:38Speaker 3: at Beam. How are you doing today?
- 4:39Speaker 4: Max?
- 4:40Speaker 1: I'm doing great. How are you today?
- 4:42Speaker 3: I'm doing great as well. So I was excited to
- 4:45Speaker 3: bring you on here today because it just felt like
- 4:47Speaker 3: a natural way to get into a lot of the
- 4:49Speaker 3: questions that I had surrounding CBD. So I think, first
- 4:53Speaker 3: and foremost, I mentioned you're the director of Innovation at Beam,
- 4:56Speaker 3: So why don't you talk to us a little bit
- 4:57Speaker 3: about what that actually entails.
- 5:00Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a really fun title, and I take it
- 5:02Speaker 2: pretty seriously from its core in that my goal is
- 5:05Speaker 2: to innovate products for Beam to keep moving in the
- 5:08Speaker 2: forefront of.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Health and wellness.
- 5:11Speaker 2: That We've started with a strong focus in cannabinoids and
- 5:14Speaker 2: CBD what we call broad spectrum hemp oil, and we've
- 5:17Speaker 2: moved on to some very intriguing complementary stack products that
- 5:22Speaker 2: are designed towards our four functional pillars. With that, I'm
- 5:25Speaker 2: in charge of not only developing and formulating these supplement
- 5:29Speaker 2: stacks and ingredients, but also working with our consumers to
- 5:33Speaker 2: make sure that their core pain points are answered properly,
- 5:37Speaker 2: that the products are formatted in a high productive, deliverable
- 5:43Speaker 2: something that's easy, convenient, natural, you don't feel like you're
- 5:46Speaker 2: just forcing this into your day and your habit. I
- 5:50Speaker 2: also work on all of our procurement, our packaging, our purchasing,
- 5:53Speaker 2: and our operations logistics. So I've got a background in
- 5:57Speaker 2: cannabinoid products that actually came from a personal journey of
- 6:00Speaker 2: my own health and wellness goals with my wife and
- 6:03Speaker 2: my own venture across the last seven to eight years,
- 6:06Speaker 2: and it led me to the doorstep with Beam, and
- 6:09Speaker 2: over the last eighteen months, I think this has been
- 6:12Speaker 2: the best opportunity I could find for myself to have
- 6:14Speaker 2: an impact on overall health and wellness journeys for other
- 6:18Speaker 2: people as well well.
- 6:19Speaker 3: I mean, you can't hint at that and then not
- 6:21Speaker 3: like shed a little bit of light about how CBD
- 6:24Speaker 3: has helped you personally. So let's chat on that for
- 6:27Speaker 3: a second before we just dive into some of the basics.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Sure, So, about twoenty twelve, my wife and I were
- 6:34Speaker 2: living in Costa Mesa, and unfortunately, she was starting to
- 6:38Speaker 2: exhibit symptoms of degenerative disc disease. And this is an
- 6:41Speaker 2: hereditary kind of spine degeneration of the disks in between
- 6:45Speaker 2: your vertebrae, and it was affecting her L five and
- 6:47Speaker 2: S one, which is kind of right at the pivot
- 6:49Speaker 2: of your lower back. And with that it became so
- 6:52Speaker 2: debilitating that she slowly progressed to unemployment until eventually unemployment
- 6:58Speaker 2: ran out due to health and day disability. And from
- 7:01Speaker 2: there we had this real issue of her low quality
- 7:05Speaker 2: of life pain management pharmaceuticals.
- 7:09Speaker 1: Just overall, the.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Woman I married was no longer able to enjoy life
- 7:13Speaker 2: at the quality she wanted to, and it became the
- 7:16Speaker 2: most important thing for me in my life. So I
- 7:19Speaker 2: was fortunate to be in a position in my career
- 7:21Speaker 2: where I could walk away. We sold our house, we
- 7:25Speaker 2: sold everything we owned that didn't fit in an RV,
- 7:28Speaker 2: and we ended up traveling to western coast from Tijuana
- 7:31Speaker 2: to British Columbia. I retired quote unquote for six months
- 7:35Speaker 2: and I had the ability to do so, and we
- 7:38Speaker 2: just kind of vagabond wanderlusted up and down the coast
- 7:41Speaker 2: for the summer twenty fifteen, and that's when we really
- 7:45Speaker 2: started focusing on using CBD and cannabinoid therapies to reduce
- 7:50Speaker 2: dependency on pharmacological type supplements, whether that's opioids, neural transmitted inhibitors,
- 7:58Speaker 2: like all sorts of other things that my wife was.
- 8:01Speaker 2: We found a ton of side effects, a ton of
- 8:03Speaker 2: other issues with it, and at twenty five, twenty six
- 8:07Speaker 2: years old, back surgery was not something that we were
- 8:09Speaker 2: wanting to consider. My father's had three back surgeries, her
- 8:13Speaker 2: father's had three or four various back surgeries on his head, next, shoulders, etc.
- 8:18Speaker 2: And it was not something that at that point in
- 8:21Speaker 2: your life you want to live another seventy five years with.
- 8:25Speaker 1: So we look to what.
- 8:27Speaker 2: Homeopathy type solutions were available, including acupuncture and mind of
- 8:31Speaker 2: fulness and all sorts of other things. But CBD really
- 8:35Speaker 2: seemed to provide a rounded, overall effect for my wife's
- 8:40Speaker 2: health that other pharmaceuticals could not bring to her. She
- 8:46Speaker 2: saw a lot of reduction of overall like I call
- 8:48Speaker 2: it pain volume, things of that nature. But these are
- 8:51Speaker 2: her inodotal experiences. I'm not a medical doctor. I can't
- 8:55Speaker 2: give medical advice. It's also her personal journey. I'm just
- 8:59Speaker 2: kind of her health guide or facilitator, if you will.
- 9:03Speaker 2: But that sparked me into really learning and educating myself
- 9:06Speaker 2: through like hemp and cannabinoid production. And when we finally
- 9:11Speaker 2: ended up in Fort Collins, Colorado, I took a job
- 9:14Speaker 2: at a rather large cannabis dispensary as a marketing manager.
- 9:18Speaker 2: And I had already been doing marketing and a lot
- 9:20Speaker 2: of it and development and things of that nature, and
- 9:23Speaker 2: it led me into the cannabis market in where I
- 9:26Speaker 2: became quickly a like inside industry knowledge based expert because
- 9:31Speaker 2: I worked at a very large retail establishment and I
- 9:34Speaker 2: made a lot of consumer education product choices, and then
- 9:37Speaker 2: I disseminated that information out to my teams held internal trainings.
- 9:41Speaker 2: Wanted to make sure the quality of service that we
- 9:43Speaker 2: provided at that facility.
- 9:45Speaker 1: Gave you more knowledge than I don't know.
- 9:47Speaker 2: Man, it's green smoke it, you know, that type of thing,
- 9:50Speaker 2: and really using other cannabinoids besides THHC to provide health
- 9:56Speaker 2: and wellness results that were otherwise difficult to achieve with
- 10:01Speaker 2: other options.
- 10:03Speaker 3: For you versus your wife, you said a reduction in
- 10:07Speaker 3: the pain volume as you as you termed it. With
- 10:11Speaker 3: your personal use of CBD, what have you experienced For me?
- 10:16Speaker 2: I find that it really helps me with my morning
- 10:19Speaker 2: and stress and mood regulation. I'm a very high output
- 10:23Speaker 2: type person. I always want to be at one hundred
- 10:27Speaker 2: and five percent, and for me, that can lead to
- 10:29Speaker 2: my brain doesn't shut off. I have that constant weight
- 10:33Speaker 2: in my shoulders.
- 10:33Speaker 1: I call it my.
- 10:34Speaker 2: Shoulder earrings that I like to wear, and so with that,
- 10:39Speaker 2: I feel that CBD in my regimen really helps me
- 10:42Speaker 2: reduce and control some of that. I also found that
- 10:45Speaker 2: once I moved out of Southern California, I have a
- 10:47Speaker 2: social anxiety that I was unaware of. I simply thought
- 10:50Speaker 2: that the high density living and urban population type living
- 10:54Speaker 2: stuff was the norm, and that's just how you feel
- 10:57Speaker 2: when you go out in society, and for os is
- 11:00Speaker 2: a smaller metropolitan area, and so I really was able
- 11:03Speaker 2: to step away from that. Now I can see that
- 11:05Speaker 2: even just a costco run for me, little dip of
- 11:08Speaker 2: CBD probably helps me on the way through the checkout line.
- 11:12Speaker 4: Oh I love this.
- 11:13Speaker 3: Maybe I should advise my father for his regular costco
- 11:16Speaker 3: trips to also indulge in some CBD.
- 11:20Speaker 2: You know, it's something that helps me. I don't think
- 11:23Speaker 2: it's a solution, cure all anything of that nature. That's
- 11:26Speaker 2: one of the big things that I hate about our
- 11:28Speaker 2: industry is that it's been treated like such a snake
- 11:31Speaker 2: oil commodity, and it's been so sensationalized by the media
- 11:35Speaker 2: for headlines that, oh, CBD cured, blah blah blah. There's
- 11:39Speaker 2: still a ton of medical research coming out here, and
- 11:42Speaker 2: you don't need CBD infused into your bed sheets.
- 11:45Speaker 4: I hear you, I hear you.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Okay, So let's break it down like literally, starting from
- 11:50Speaker 3: the very beginning here. So when someone says to you,
- 11:53Speaker 3: what is CBD, what do you tell them?
- 11:55Speaker 2: CBD is one molecule extracted from the plant or the
- 12:01Speaker 2: cannabis plant period.
- 12:03Speaker 4: That's a period.
- 12:04Speaker 2: Now, if we want to get really overarching total. CBD
- 12:09Speaker 2: is a cannabinoid, right, it stands for cannabi dial. Cannabi
- 12:13Speaker 2: dial A lot of people will say is a non psychoactive,
- 12:16Speaker 2: but that's not true. It still interacts with neurotransmitters in
- 12:19Speaker 2: your brain, so it has psychoactivity. However, it's not intoxicated,
- 12:24Speaker 2: so you're not going to feel any mental altered state
- 12:27Speaker 2: when you imbibe something like CBD. What's really neat about
- 12:31Speaker 2: it is that CBD can kind of well call that
- 12:34Speaker 2: just a placeholder for non intoxicating cannabinoids, but it interacts
- 12:39Speaker 2: with your endocannabinoid system. And this was only discovered as
- 12:42Speaker 2: late as the nineties. But you have an internal system
- 12:46Speaker 2: in your body that is regulated by cannabinoids or endocannabinoids
- 12:50Speaker 2: from inside your body. Specifically, this is typically anatomide.
- 12:54Speaker 1: Or two AG. There's also two other endocannabinoids.
- 12:57Speaker 2: But point being, we have about four regulatory nabinoids in
- 13:00Speaker 2: our body. Phido cannabinoids come from outside the body. That's
- 13:05Speaker 2: endo is inside. Fido's outside. We have CBD, THHC, CBC, CBG,
- 13:11Speaker 2: there's a million different ones. It's actually about one hundred
- 13:13Speaker 2: and forty that we know. But there's basically the big five,
- 13:17Speaker 2: and that's CBD, THHC. Then we get into what we
- 13:21Speaker 2: call minors CBC, CBG CBN. Broad spectrum and full spectrum
- 13:26Speaker 2: oils is kind of where this gets tricky, and then
- 13:28Speaker 2: there's isolates. Full spectrum oils are going to include everything
- 13:32Speaker 2: extracted out of a plant.
- 13:34Speaker 1: Broad spectrum are going.
- 13:35Speaker 2: To have a little slice of that removed, typically the THHC.
- 13:39Speaker 2: The other big difference is like hemp and marijuana, they're
- 13:43Speaker 2: both cannabis, but one has been bred so that the
- 13:47Speaker 2: genetics produce CBD instead of THHC for the resin gland.
- 13:53Speaker 3: And you'll notice that, I know, for example, Beam advertises
- 13:58Speaker 3: their CBD as THHC free CBD. I think that that
- 14:02Speaker 3: can be a main point for people when it comes
- 14:06Speaker 3: to their hesitancy on CBD because they don't fully understand
- 14:10Speaker 3: what it even is that they're truly taking in. So
- 14:13Speaker 3: talk to me about, you know, the difference between something
- 14:16Speaker 3: that may be marketed as a THHC free CBD versus
- 14:20Speaker 3: you know, the whole, the whole shebang.
- 14:22Speaker 2: Sure, so it's really rare for a plant, a cannabis
- 14:26Speaker 2: plant to grow zero THHC. There's this process called cannabinoid synthase,
- 14:31Speaker 2: and essentially a plant takes up all these amino acids
- 14:33Speaker 2: and then it produces this cannabinoid, and that cannabinoid sits
- 14:37Speaker 2: on a capiti stock, and that stock looks like a
- 14:39Speaker 2: little arm holding an apple. And what that does is
- 14:43Speaker 2: it's sticky resin. It's trying to collect mail pollen and
- 14:45Speaker 2: produce flowers and receed, and the next generation goes over
- 14:48Speaker 2: and over and over. We want to collect that little
- 14:51Speaker 2: bit of oil because it interacts with our endo cannabinoid system,
- 14:55Speaker 2: and so to get it to THHC free, we have
- 14:57Speaker 2: to extract all that material, which typically occurs through CO
- 15:01Speaker 2: two super critical extraction. That's a whole other science talk
- 15:05Speaker 2: we can get into that. But then that oil comes
- 15:07Speaker 2: through and we do a process called multi column fra
- 15:11Speaker 2: ash chromatography, and that allows us to specifically target THCHC
- 15:16Speaker 2: down to like five parts per million or less. And
- 15:20Speaker 2: what that does is remove that cannabinoid so that we
- 15:24Speaker 2: don't have it in our full spectrum. But we have
- 15:27Speaker 2: a broad spectrum, and that means that we don't just
- 15:30Speaker 2: cut out TCHC and everything else and only want CBD,
- 15:34Speaker 2: because it's like having a band with only a guitar player.
- 15:38Speaker 2: You need drums, vocals, bass, the whole thing to have
- 15:42Speaker 2: a rounded sound and a full what they're calling entourage
- 15:46Speaker 2: effect or synergy effect in multiple cannabinoids terpenes, et cetera
- 15:51Speaker 2: interacting with your body. And that's that's how we go
- 15:54Speaker 2: about like pulling out THHC. We don't want it for
- 15:57Speaker 2: our athletes for WATA ADA compliance all that type of stuf.
- 16:01Speaker 2: And then also the benefit comes to other people that
- 16:04Speaker 2: can't have THHC in their system, whether it be employment reasons,
- 16:08Speaker 2: personal choice, or concern over intoxication, etc.
- 16:12Speaker 1: Etc.
- 16:13Speaker 3: You mentioned the word benefits, which is the next question
- 16:15Speaker 3: that I want to ask you about. Obviously, we talked
- 16:17Speaker 3: about how CBD positively impacted your wife in both you
- 16:21Speaker 3: and of course I'm sure many of the athletes that
- 16:24Speaker 3: you just reference that work with BEAM. When we talk
- 16:26Speaker 3: about benefits that can come hand in hand with CBD,
- 16:29Speaker 3: what are we talking about here.
- 16:31Speaker 2: I mean a lot of the research is still out there,
- 16:34Speaker 2: and as far as the USDA FDA are concerned, there's
- 16:37Speaker 2: no direct benefits from CBD.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Now, what we can.
- 16:41Speaker 2: Talk about are the actionary pathways of which we see
- 16:44Speaker 2: interaction of the human endocannabinoid system and other regulatory pathways.
- 16:49Speaker 2: So one of them that's really interesting is positive allosteric
- 16:54Speaker 2: GABA modulation. Casual rolls off the tongue. Essentially, that means
- 16:59Speaker 2: that you have these GABBA receptors, which is another neurotransmitter
- 17:03Speaker 2: in your brain, and CBD can help widen those receptors
- 17:07Speaker 2: to allow for more uptake.
- 17:09Speaker 1: Right.
- 17:10Speaker 2: Similarly, CBD is showing results as an a dentosine reuptake inhibitor.
- 17:16Speaker 2: A dentosine is a chemical shown as a neurotransmitter in
- 17:19Speaker 2: the brain that has a functionary interaction with the anxiety pathway.
- 17:23Speaker 2: Now does that mean CBD xyz we make the transgressive property. No,
- 17:30Speaker 2: right now, there are no claim benefits for CB. I'm
- 17:33Speaker 2: very tight about that. This is why we have other
- 17:36Speaker 2: complementary ingredients though. So if we know that CBD could
- 17:40Speaker 2: help positively modulate gabba. Gabba has some roles in sleep,
- 17:46Speaker 2: we pair that with melatonin, magnesium, elthienine, a reischie mushroom extraft.
- 17:51Speaker 2: This is the complementary stack for dream. It creates such
- 17:55Speaker 2: a wonderful sleep product. There's some other systems like your
- 17:58Speaker 2: digestive system, your immune systems, all sorts of different cells
- 18:02Speaker 2: in your body are shown to have endocannabinoid receptors on them,
- 18:06Speaker 2: the CB one and CB two receptor. I talked about
- 18:09Speaker 2: exactly what that role is, exactly what it does. The
- 18:12Speaker 2: science is too young, the studies aren't there, the legislative
- 18:16Speaker 2: ability to conduct those studies isn't quite there yet on
- 18:21Speaker 2: a lot of this.
- 18:22Speaker 3: Right, And that's I mean, because CBD and THHD so
- 18:25Speaker 3: closely correlated, a lot of government funding won't go toward
- 18:28Speaker 3: research that has to do with that.
- 18:30Speaker 4: Is that correct?
- 18:31Speaker 2: Yeah, A lot of it is because of its Schedule
- 18:33Speaker 2: one narcotics designation as a marijuana extract or cannabis product. Now,
- 18:40Speaker 2: there are some of the Farm Bill regulations that allow
- 18:43Speaker 2: in state programs for hemp production, et cetera. We saw
- 18:47Speaker 2: a big jump in twenty eighteen with some federal legalization there.
- 18:51Speaker 2: There's still a lot of great area the USDA FDA
- 18:55Speaker 2: need to make rulings on how these products are regulated.
- 18:58Speaker 2: There's no mandatory qualifications for testing all these types of
- 19:03Speaker 2: issues that still exist in a young market. As we
- 19:07Speaker 2: see more legislation come in, more ability to research these
- 19:11Speaker 2: would come through. Because the ethics and legality of researching
- 19:14Speaker 2: a scheduled one narcotic like Heroin, aren't really allowing you
- 19:19Speaker 2: to do a test to see if Heroin helps with pay.
- 19:28Speaker 3: Taking a break from today's episode to give some love
- 19:32Speaker 3: to my sponsor at Gooder.
- 19:34Speaker 4: Who doesn't love cute sunglasses?
- 19:36Speaker 3: That's a rhetorical question, because everybody loves cute sunglasses, and
- 19:40Speaker 3: now this is a time of year when it is
- 19:43Speaker 3: appropriate to get on your sunglass game. The good news
- 19:47Speaker 3: is that Gooder good R has got you covered with
- 19:50Speaker 3: their no balance, no scratch, polarized styles starting at just
- 19:55Speaker 3: twenty five dollars. Seriously, I am a huge fan of
- 20:01Speaker 3: their blackout mock g's that are perfect for everything from
- 20:04Speaker 3: god sprinting around the track, which I did yesterday along
- 20:07Speaker 3: the East River, to wearing difrun errands and shop and go.
- 20:10Speaker 4: To brunch and just look cute.
- 20:12Speaker 3: But just because I'm a black sunglass human doesn't mean
- 20:16Speaker 3: that you have to be. In fact, if you are
- 20:18Speaker 3: a fan of color, then you are in the right hands.
- 20:21Speaker 3: They have styles in every shade, a fit for every person.
- 20:26Speaker 3: Of course, Gooder has an awesome offer for you. Head
- 20:29Speaker 3: on over to Gooder dot com. Slash Hurdle. That's goodr
- 20:33Speaker 3: dot com slash hurdle and use the promo code Hurdle
- 20:37Speaker 3: twenty twenty one to get ten.
- 20:39Speaker 4: Dollars off at checkout.
- 20:41Speaker 3: Amazing discount here again, that is Gooder dot com slash
- 20:45Speaker 3: hurdle use code hurdle twenty twenty one to get ten
- 20:48Speaker 3: dollars off at checkout. I think what's all so interesting
- 21:00Speaker 3: here and appreciated at least by me, is this transparency.
- 21:05Speaker 3: And I know one of the questions that came in
- 21:07Speaker 3: before was talking about ingesting CBD versus topical CBD. So
- 21:13Speaker 3: talk to me about kind of how that differentiates what
- 21:16Speaker 3: your maybe your experience could be.
- 21:18Speaker 1: Yeah. Absolutely.
- 21:19Speaker 2: I mean topical CBD feels really safe because we don't
- 21:22Speaker 2: put it in our body. We've put it on our body.
- 21:25Speaker 2: It's typically a localized application. The thing about topical CBD
- 21:30Speaker 2: is that your skin's really really good at keeping things
- 21:33Speaker 2: out of your body, like that's what it's designed to do. Also,
- 21:37Speaker 2: CBD is oil based, and your skin is mostly water
- 21:42Speaker 2: and oil and water oil floats, so it's really difficult
- 21:46Speaker 2: to really get any sort of topical CBD application below
- 21:50Speaker 2: literally a skin deep level. And so we call it
- 21:53Speaker 2: topical versus transdermal, which would be something that's been made
- 21:57Speaker 2: to actually penetrate your skin and intro your bloodstream, like
- 22:00Speaker 2: a transdermal patch or something of that nature. So applying topically,
- 22:06Speaker 2: it's great for surface level applications. I have kind of
- 22:10Speaker 2: a slip doing some shake and bake teaching some kids
- 22:15Speaker 2: how to play lacrosse, and I twist it up a
- 22:18Speaker 2: little bit of soft tissue underneath my right patella, and
- 22:21Speaker 2: I find if I don't keep good form during running
- 22:23Speaker 2: or cycling, I can get a little irritation on the
- 22:26Speaker 2: inside of my knee. It's great to apply for me CBD.
- 22:30Speaker 2: Topically it kind of helps with some of the soreness, etc.
- 22:33Speaker 2: I also find it it pushes other parts of my
- 22:36Speaker 2: ritual or wellness routine in that I'm massaging that area,
- 22:40Speaker 2: I'm taking the time to stretch. It is a tool
- 22:43Speaker 2: in my toolbox, right and I'm a big proponent of this.
- 22:47Speaker 1: It's like CBD.
- 22:49Speaker 2: A lot of people say snake oil type claims it's
- 22:51Speaker 2: a cure all, et cetera. It's a tool in the
- 22:53Speaker 2: toolbox that can complement your wellness routines. It is not
- 22:58Speaker 2: going to be the silver bullet, the hard push the
- 23:02Speaker 2: cure all one and done. And I also hate solutions
- 23:06Speaker 2: that aggressively overbalance because if you're seeing symptoms arise, typically
- 23:12Speaker 2: it's from small changes that can create compounding effects over time.
- 23:17Speaker 2: So when we talk about a topical application, it's great,
- 23:21Speaker 2: but it's great in a routine if you're looking to
- 23:24Speaker 2: really target some things internally. Ingesting CBD can help your
- 23:29Speaker 2: endocanibinoid system regulate where it needs cannabinoids.
- 23:34Speaker 3: CBD is a part of a routine. I mean, that's
- 23:36Speaker 3: kind of how we view all of health and wellness, right.
- 23:39Speaker 3: It's like you can't run your body into the ground
- 23:41Speaker 3: and not prioritize recovery or nutrition. Just like if you're
- 23:45Speaker 3: only thinking about your nutrition, well, that might help you
- 23:48Speaker 3: feel great, but it's still important for you to move
- 23:50Speaker 3: around every once in a while. So you really want
- 23:52Speaker 3: to think holistically when it comes to your overall wellness routine.
- 23:57Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying.
- 23:58Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely, And it's been the biggest change for me
- 24:01Speaker 2: as I've grown into my thirties is readjusting my relationship
- 24:06Speaker 2: with fitness, wellness, health as my relationship with movement and
- 24:11Speaker 2: well being over what's on the scale. How do I
- 24:15Speaker 2: physically appear and look in the mirror, etc. If I
- 24:18Speaker 2: can crush whatever I'm doing and feel good while I'm
- 24:21Speaker 2: doing it, that is how I feel healthy and.
- 24:24Speaker 4: Well for sure.
- 24:25Speaker 3: Another question coming in from the hurdle community here, I
- 24:28Speaker 3: see that some CBDs can be super pricey and other
- 24:31Speaker 3: ones not so much. Is there anything specific that I
- 24:34Speaker 3: should look into when it comes to buying my CBD
- 24:38Speaker 3: so that I know that I'm buying something that's safe.
- 24:41Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 24:42Speaker 2: Absolutely, there's no regulation currently mandated by any government body,
- 24:46Speaker 2: some state bodies on small things, but you need to
- 24:50Speaker 2: make sure that there's third party laboratory testing on all
- 24:52Speaker 2: of your hemp or kannabinoid products. Hemp is really good
- 24:57Speaker 2: at being a bioaccumulator. This means that it can grab
- 25:01Speaker 2: almost any heavy metal, pesticides, all sorts of things like
- 25:04Speaker 2: that out of soil and put it in the finished material.
- 25:08Speaker 2: And when we're extracting cannabinoids from hemp, we're extracting everything
- 25:12Speaker 2: and concentrating it, and so we're taking all of that
- 25:15Speaker 2: and smushing it down into a little tiny funnel keeping
- 25:17Speaker 2: all that essence. And typically if there's pesticides, heavy metal residues,
- 25:22Speaker 2: et cetera, you're going to concentrate that too, so you
- 25:25Speaker 2: want to look for third party tests that make sure
- 25:27Speaker 2: that you're covering some of those toxins. And then additionally,
- 25:31Speaker 2: your cannabinoid test should look like there's strong results on it.
- 25:36Speaker 2: And what I mean by that is if it claims
- 25:39Speaker 2: to have a spectrum of cannabinoids but only shows a
- 25:42Speaker 2: big old, single bargraph in one column, that's not a spectrum.
- 25:47Speaker 2: That is an outlier, and then maybe some tiny little stuff.
- 25:51Speaker 2: You want to see at least one percent two percent
- 25:55Speaker 2: of other minor cannabinoids in your spectrums when you look
- 25:59Speaker 2: across a product. Additionally, you don't want to see a
- 26:02Speaker 2: product that is like dark and black and taste like
- 26:06Speaker 2: wheat grass and really strong hemp earth flavors, because it
- 26:10Speaker 2: typically means it's low refined. And when we extract hemp,
- 26:15Speaker 2: we take all this biomass, we put it in a
- 26:17Speaker 2: big old pressurized tube. We blast CO two through it
- 26:20Speaker 2: and out comes this big old paste. But it's full
- 26:22Speaker 2: of like the Omega three and omega six fatty acids
- 26:25Speaker 2: that are all up in hemp seeds and hemp milk
- 26:27Speaker 2: and everything like that. So we have to separate those
- 26:30Speaker 2: and when we do. You can just have this like
- 26:32Speaker 2: dark black crude oil and bottle that up and call
- 26:35Speaker 2: it a tincture, or you can actually refine it, distill it,
- 26:39Speaker 2: and then we do that chromatography to remove THHC and
- 26:43Speaker 2: we're left with a product that is beautifully golden at
- 26:47Speaker 2: room temperature. It becomes a crystalline product because it's so
- 26:50Speaker 2: pure that the cannabinoids actually bind together and we create.
- 26:53Speaker 1: Like rock candy.
- 26:55Speaker 2: And so you want to be looking at a lot
- 26:56Speaker 2: of these marks of quality. It shouldn't smell like a
- 27:00Speaker 2: total hemp field. It should have third party laboratory testing,
- 27:05Speaker 2: you should have a spectrum of cannabinoids, and you should
- 27:09Speaker 2: be looking for heavy metal and pesticide results.
- 27:13Speaker 3: And then another question that came in from the hurdle
- 27:15Speaker 3: community asking about building up a tolerance. Can you build
- 27:18Speaker 3: a tolerance up for CBDs that you might have to
- 27:22Speaker 3: start taking more and is that something that could be
- 27:24Speaker 3: of concern.
- 27:26Speaker 2: Yeah, the human body is really good at adapting to
- 27:29Speaker 2: adverse situations over time. As you put more cannabinoids into
- 27:34Speaker 2: your body, you will get less response over time through
- 27:37Speaker 2: your ECS or a no cannabinoid system. Now that doesn't
- 27:41Speaker 2: always mean you won't get the same results. Because there's
- 27:44Speaker 2: some theories that cannabinoid deficiency can be kind of overcome,
- 27:48Speaker 2: rebalanced and set into like a maintenance serving. There's also
- 27:53Speaker 2: going to be symptomatic use cases where you may see that, oh,
- 27:57Speaker 2: I've got a trigger, and thus I want to take
- 27:59Speaker 2: an additional serving something of that nature over time. Yes,
- 28:04Speaker 2: but CBD doesn't have again, like very specific, directly noticeable
- 28:09Speaker 2: results on an acute short timeline. It has more results
- 28:14Speaker 2: like my allergy medicine, where I take it over time
- 28:17Speaker 2: and I progressively get better results, and then I find
- 28:20Speaker 2: a maintenance serving that I tend to stick at and
- 28:23Speaker 2: continue through.
- 28:26Speaker 4: It's very much like adaptogens.
- 28:27Speaker 3: And I know that makes sense because a lot of
- 28:30Speaker 3: the things that are in your quote unquote stacks happen
- 28:33Speaker 3: to be adaptagens as well. Serving size really important thing
- 28:37Speaker 3: to touch on before I let you go here today.
- 28:40Speaker 3: When it comes to someone who may just be reaching
- 28:43Speaker 3: for what could be the most common way to take CBD,
- 28:46Speaker 3: which I would say would be through an oil or
- 28:48Speaker 3: a tincture, what would you say is a good amount
- 28:53Speaker 3: to start off with?
- 28:55Speaker 2: You know a lot of people start with our five
- 28:57Speaker 2: hundred milligram serving size it's a thirty bottle, so it
- 29:00Speaker 2: has thirty servings.
- 29:02Speaker 1: One millilter is a serving.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Five hundred milligram seems to be attractive to new people
- 29:06Speaker 2: because it gives them a good entry price point. But
- 29:10Speaker 2: I also find that to get effective servings, most people
- 29:13Speaker 2: have to take up to two milliliters to really see
- 29:16Speaker 2: that result, and they want to start low and slow,
- 29:18Speaker 2: so they take one, they move up, they move up
- 29:22Speaker 2: until they get their effect. I find my friends and
- 29:25Speaker 2: families start with about one thousand bottle, and that is
- 29:29Speaker 2: a sixteen milligram serving size. It is something that's really
- 29:34Speaker 2: unique about the end of cannabinoid system that it's not
- 29:38Speaker 2: tied to your height, weight, sex, ethnicity, or anything for
- 29:43Speaker 2: your tolerance or responsiveness. And you can have five hundred
- 29:46Speaker 2: pound eight foot tall men and twelve pound people respond
- 29:53Speaker 2: on totally different parts of this spectrum curve. So always
- 29:57Speaker 2: start low and slow ten fifteen milligram servings increase from there.
- 30:04Speaker 2: See where you're comfortable with use it until you get results.
- 30:08Speaker 3: Are there any other myths that you would like to
- 30:11Speaker 3: dispel about CBD use before I let you go?
- 30:16Speaker 1: Yeah, you don't need CBD in everything. I mean like it.
- 30:19Speaker 2: It can be a moisturizer, it can be antimicrobial. It
- 30:23Speaker 2: shouldn't be a hand sanitizer like that. There's a lot
- 30:27Speaker 2: of products that are on the market that take something
- 30:30Speaker 2: that's already a product and then just throw CBD in
- 30:32Speaker 2: it for the effect for the branding for the z
- 30:35Speaker 2: the zaz On, the Jazz. Yeah, and it's buzzy and
- 30:40Speaker 2: that's great. But hand sanitizer is effective because it has
- 30:44Speaker 2: over seventy to ninety percent ice prople alcohol in it
- 30:47Speaker 2: or ethanol. That's what's antimicrobial. The CBD oil has no
- 30:53Speaker 2: effect in comparison to how much the ethanol is sanitizing. Similarly,
- 30:59Speaker 2: like a CBD tooth paste, you don't need CBD in
- 31:01Speaker 2: your toothpaste. It's not in your mouth even that long
- 31:04Speaker 2: to really absorb. Right. It's not doing a great job
- 31:08Speaker 2: at being an anti micro yes, will it?
- 31:10Speaker 1: Most oils are.
- 31:12Speaker 2: You don't see molds growing in olive oil, right, But
- 31:15Speaker 2: I also don't infuse my bed sheets with olive oil
- 31:19Speaker 2: because that would be silly and a sticky mess.
- 31:22Speaker 1: So when you come to.
- 31:24Speaker 2: A CBD product, think to yourself, like one quality is
- 31:29Speaker 2: this equality brand? Does it represent itself as a quality brand,
- 31:32Speaker 2: and then two, does this make claims that seem outlandish?
- 31:37Speaker 1: Three?
- 31:39Speaker 2: Is CBD really necessary to make this a better product?
- 31:44Speaker 2: If it didn't have it would otherwise function.
- 31:48Speaker 1: And typically we see.
- 31:50Speaker 2: Any product that answers yes to those is going to
- 31:54Speaker 2: burn out in the next six to eight months.
- 31:56Speaker 1: People will stop buying it. Like in there was one.
- 32:00Speaker 2: CBD exercise clothes that I thought was quite funny because
- 32:03Speaker 2: once you wash them, I'm not sure how the CBD
- 32:06Speaker 2: would stick around.
- 32:09Speaker 3: We are unsure about these things. Oh man, Well, I
- 32:12Speaker 3: really appreciate all of your insight into this. I think
- 32:15Speaker 3: that again, CBD can definitely come off a little complicated feeling,
- 32:22Speaker 3: but it's really helpful when people like you can come
- 32:25Speaker 3: into the mix and help break it down in a
- 32:27Speaker 3: way that might take a second, but it's definitely easier
- 32:31Speaker 3: to understand. Max Pulling, Director of Innovation at Beam, Thanks
- 32:36Speaker 3: so much for talking to us today. How do the
- 32:38Speaker 3: hurdlers keep up with you? How do they follow along
