Transcript
- 0:00It's bonus time. Here we go.
- 0:02This month in February of 2025, we are doing a podcast about
- 0:06podcast. We want to introduce you to
- 0:08other track and field themed podcasts that are out there that
- 0:11might be great for your listening pleasure.
- 0:14So all month we're introducing a new podcast each and every day,
- 0:17showing you who they are, what they are, how they are, why they
- 0:20got started and even their favorite episodes and most
- 0:23popular. And hopefully this adds to your
- 0:26podcast listening library. So here we go.
- 0:28Let's get started with today's podcast about podcast.
- 0:32All right, let's get into today's podcast to introduce you
- 0:36to. So why don't we start with, why
- 0:37don't you introduce yourself, kind of give a 30,000 foot level
- 0:40of like what your relationship to our great sport is and of
- 0:43course, give us the name of the podcast that we're talking about
- 0:45today. Absolutely.
- 0:47My name is JT Ayres and I'm a coach.
- 0:49I'm a track and field fanatic. I coach track and field to the
- 0:53high school level and the podcast that I get to host is on
- 0:57track and field. It's pretty easy to say and
- 0:59pretty easy to get to do. I love doing it.
- 1:03I love my very next question for you.
- 1:04So what is the significance of the name?
- 1:06How do we come up with the name of the On Track and Field
- 1:08podcast? Well, it's the company that pays
- 1:11me to do the podcast, so it's pretty easy.
- 1:13On track and field. Years ago, they came to me and
- 1:18they said, hey, we want to do a podcast.
- 1:20We're and the CEO of the company's name, C Steve
- 1:23Ringgold, He's a coach in the Northern California area.
- 1:26I live in Southern California and we've kind of met briefly at
- 1:30track meets like every coach does.
- 1:32And he asked me if I'd be interested.
- 1:34And I told him, no, there's no way everyone gets to do a
- 1:37podcast. I don't want to do a podcast.
- 1:39And it was right around the time of COVID.
- 1:41He said, well, I bought this company and I just want to make
- 1:45the company more about not just track and field equipment.
- 1:50I want to do education, I want to be out there.
- 1:53I want publicity and I want people to know this is a good
- 1:55place to do business. And I was like, oh, well, I've
- 1:58never heard of you, I'm not a customer of you, so let's talk.
- 2:01And we basically kind of came to the conclusion that I already do
- 2:06this. I go and I just try to find the
- 2:09great minds of track and field because I'm not smart enough to
- 2:12know these things. I didn't was not an Olympian and
- 2:15I well read, but yet the best way to be, I don't know, maybe
- 2:21knowledgeable about the things that you don't know is you go
- 2:24find good mentors. And I've been a direct recipient
- 2:27of some of the great minds of track and field and they have
- 2:30liked me enough to share some of their stuff and my athletes
- 2:33benefit from it. So I'm going to do this anyways.
- 2:35I might as well do it for this company, dude podcast and we're
- 2:38all at home during COVID. So let's just do this and then
- 2:41100 and gosh, I think we're on 40 episodes later.
- 2:46It's been such a joy. So long winded answer to your
- 2:49question. Yeah, I on trackandfield.com,
- 2:54they asked me to do this, the only sponsor and I get to do it
- 2:56with them and for them. And glad to say I'm a customer
- 3:00through and through now. Absolutely, man, love them love
- 3:03they're great partners of ours here at Gil Athletics.
- 3:04So definitely love what they're doing.
- 3:06Love what Steve Ringgold does. Talk to us about describe the
- 3:09style. Is this a a solo podcast?
- 3:12Are you an interview style? Talk to us about kind of the
- 3:13style that you go for with the show.
- 3:15Well. One of the great benefits of the
- 3:18podcast is that Steve Ringgold is the voice of 100 or so
- 3:22syndicate radio shows across the country.
- 3:25That is his actual job besides owning on track and field and
- 3:29relay, batons.com and all these other things.
- 3:33He is a serial entrepreneur. But the thing about Steve is
- 3:35that Steve said, hey, we did a lot of research, especially when
- 3:38radio and except for Joe Rogan, people do not really listen all
- 3:44the way through to a podcast. We want to make this at least,
- 3:48you know, edible enough where people will start and finish and
- 3:52not stop the the podcast mid through.
- 3:54So let's make it 18 to 20 minutes.
- 3:56That's what the research shows. I was like, OK, that seems easy
- 3:58enough. Well, Mike, you do a podcast, it
- 4:01is very difficult to either stop someone talking or want to be
- 4:05done talking to these amazing, incredible people.
- 4:08So but we do keep it around 18 to 20 minutes.
- 4:11Sometimes if it's, especially if it's live, we'll go an hour.
- 4:14But those are different circumstances.
- 4:16The podcast is just me hosting it it we've had some incredible
- 4:22athletes, coaches, biomechanist, nutritionist.
- 4:25So anybody that allows us to listen to the sport and it make
- 4:31us better. You could be an athlete, you
- 4:32could be a coach, you could be a fan.
- 4:33It's for you. So interview style, You you you
- 4:37work on interviews for your show.
- 4:39That's the main style. Yep, their interviews.
- 4:42I host and I ask questions and I would say this their
- 4:46conversations because I'm a track coach and I understand
- 4:48it's not the LA Times or USA TODAY asking, you know,
- 4:52question, answer, question, answer.
- 4:53This is just me having conversations at a high, high
- 4:57level, but also sometimes at a low level just to allow our
- 5:00audience to gauge all of it and all of it be, I don't know,
- 5:04valuable. Awesome.
- 5:05You've already talked about when it started and why the
- 5:08motivation behind it. So let's talk about, you know,
- 5:10in business and you know, Steve Ringgold has this as well.
- 5:13You know, we sell to a lot of different people, you know,
- 5:15parents have bought stuff from us, construction companies,
- 5:18things like that. But our ideal customer, like who
- 5:20we think about when we're designing products, marketing,
- 5:23etcetera is the high school and college track coach.
- 5:26The same thing for the podcast, you have an ideal listener
- 5:29profile. A lot of people might partake in
- 5:32the show, but you are targeting you're talking to 1 certain type
- 5:35of person out there. Who is it for the On Track and
- 5:38Field podcast? The great question, it's for the
- 5:41track and field community. You can be a casual fan, you
- 5:45could be an athlete, you can be a coach, or you can be another
- 5:50Olympian. The idea of the podcast is to
- 5:53give you something that you're going to walk away with and it's
- 5:56going to be valuable and meaningful right away.
- 5:58Here's an example. Years ago, and I know every
- 6:01track coach has done something similar to this, I walked up to
- 6:03my hurdlers and I was like, hey, hey, who's your favorite
- 6:06hurdler? They could not name one.
- 6:08I was like, who has the world record?
- 6:10They could not name them. It's like this is a problem.
- 6:12If I'm going to coach a sport and my athletes are going to
- 6:15fall in love with this thing, which you and I both are in love
- 6:19with this sport, greatest sport in the world.
- 6:22I thought maybe this podcast can be a place where people can have
- 6:25the opportunity to gain a greater knowledge or
- 6:28understanding about who these people are.
- 6:30So now my athletes have an opportunity and the parents have
- 6:34an opportunity to learn things from coaches, learn things from
- 6:37Olympians. We've had Noah Lyles in the
- 6:39podcast, I think five times, right, Benjamin?
- 6:42Twice. I've had a whole group of
- 6:46coaches that continue to come on.
- 6:47We talked everything from nutrition and sleep to the
- 6:52proper way to lift and apply force to the ground with your
- 6:54foot distance running. It's one of those things where I
- 6:59can then grab this huge list of different podcasts, interviews,
- 7:0518 to 20 minutes at a time and just give it out to people.
- 7:08And my athletes benefit from it. And I know that.
- 7:11But I also know because other coaches grab me all the time and
- 7:14say, man, you've really helped my culture.
- 7:16You've really helped reinforce the things that I'm saying.
- 7:19And now I get to hear, you know, Michelle Freeman, the relays
- 7:22coach of the USA TODAY or USA Track and Field.
- 7:25And then I can hear her say that therefore it's better for my
- 7:28athletes. My athletes are listening to it.
- 7:30So within the last year, we've really seen an increase in, I
- 7:34would say, younger audience members.
- 7:38And that's been really, really cool.
- 7:40And that's not just my own children listening to it,
- 7:42because I know they don't. Love it.
- 7:45Yeah, they hear that voice enough, right?
- 7:48Absolutely. What has been your favorite
- 7:50episode? And more than likely these two
- 7:53is kind of a part A Part B are not the same.
- 7:55What has maybe been the most popular, you know, as far as
- 7:58most listened to. So what's been your most
- 7:59favorite episode or episodes? It's hard to have the choose one
- 8:02of your children, right? All these 100 plus are your
- 8:05children. What's been your favorite and
- 8:06maybe what's been the most popular?
- 8:09That's one of the hardest questions I think you ever could
- 8:11ask. And because if I asked you the
- 8:12same thing, you would say, oh, that's a tough one.
- 8:15So here, let me answer with this.
- 8:18Sometimes the most engaging, fun, worthwhile conversations I
- 8:22have may not also be the most popular.
- 8:25And sometimes the ones I thought, man, I don't think I
- 8:27did a good job. I'm not sure my really helped my
- 8:29guests get out what they wanted to say or was most meaningful
- 8:33and I'm completely wrong and that they happen to have the
- 8:36most downloads. So here's some examples.
- 8:38If I write the word shin splint on any podcast and I've done it
- 8:42three times with three different people, those things blow up.
- 8:46I, it's, it's astronomical how much the shin splint is a
- 8:51universal problem. And yet people really, really
- 8:54want some sound advice. That also means they're sharing
- 8:57it. So they're sharing these things.
- 8:59The Olympians actually do not get a lot of clicks.
- 9:04I hate to say that on air, but they just don't.
- 9:08I do think because the coaches aren't necessarily interested in
- 9:12in in Olympian's point of view, they are more interested in
- 9:15someone that has maybe a PhD, you know, or someone that is has
- 9:20a greater understanding that can help them in the immediate now
- 9:22with their team. So my favorite one, I just was
- 9:26in Las Vegas with a Entertainment Group and all the
- 9:31different people that they, I would say manage, They put me in
- 9:35a suite and I had my podcast. And Steve was right next to me
- 9:39with the sound engineer right next to him.
- 9:41And we were on a couch with two microphones.
- 9:43And Rye Benjamin sat down and we've known each other
- 9:46previously. And I just say, hey, man, let's
- 9:49just get into it. I asked him out the four by
- 9:51four. And for 33 minutes, he walked me
- 9:54through every single moment of that race.
- 9:59Dude, the guy only ran for 43.1 seconds, but yet he walked me
- 10:02through every single moment of that.
- 10:04I was captivated. I was just a kid in a candy
- 10:08store just watching one of my favorite athletes talk about one
- 10:12of the most amazing things that I saw on TV that summer while he
- 10:16was in Paris doing the Olympics, winning a gold medal.
- 10:19And then he walked me through the net.
- 10:20You know, the race of the hurdle race and how he did it and how
- 10:23he overcame things. And Mike, I cannot tell you
- 10:26about how joyful it was. And you know what, if I didn't
- 10:30even do a, the podcast just gave me a reason to sit in that seat.
- 10:33I don't even care if I'm getting paid.
- 10:34I don't care if people clicked. I was sitting there listening to
- 10:37one of the greatest conversation stories I've ever heard in my
- 10:40life. And I'll have that the rest of
- 10:42my life. It was, it was amazing.
- 10:44That's an that's an awesome experience that that really is
- 10:46cool. I love that for you.
- 10:48You know, we certainly have some fans of your podcast that have
- 10:52been with you since episode 1 and have listened to 100 and
- 10:54plus episodes. But more likely for most
- 10:58podcasts, you know, people come in and out of our shows, right?
- 11:01They they find a topic like shouldn't split.
- 11:03So they're going to listen to those.
- 11:03And maybe they don't want to listen to the Olympians or
- 11:05whatnot. But you have been that behind
- 11:07the mic on 100 plus of them and seen a lot of the stuff that
- 11:10goes behind the scenes that you have to do to actually produce
- 11:12and create a podcast. What have you learned over these
- 11:15past several years from doing the podcast?
- 11:18Not necessarily like a coach taught you a new relay thing,
- 11:21but like the the whole kit and kaboodle What what made me have
- 11:24you? Have you grown as the host?
- 11:27My wife is one of the most amazing people in the world and
- 11:31she'll listen to the podcast and give me feedback and I'll take
- 11:34that feedback. I've also listened to myself on
- 11:36the podcast and I try to do it every episode and that is one of
- 11:39the most excruciating, hardest things you would ever do.
- 11:43I hate hearing my weird raspy voice.
- 11:46But yet the one thing that I've learned setting the guest up to
- 11:50get their best out of them. And I think a good coach would
- 11:53do that for any athlete. So I almost feel like a coach
- 11:55during these 1820 minute podcast episodes where I'm helping the
- 12:00guest without them knowing it, get the best out of them.
- 12:03And that means asking a question that's engaging, it's worth
- 12:07their while, It's something they never even maybe answered before
- 12:10because I want the listener to have to hear something from this
- 12:14person. And I'm trying to draw out that
- 12:16passion and that energy and then excitement out of them.
- 12:19So I think asking questions without explaining myself too
- 12:23much. And I've learned that maybe
- 12:26sometimes preparation, which I always do, doesn't really help.
- 12:30Sometimes understanding the person and then asking questions
- 12:34just because you in the moment, but because you know this
- 12:37person, you've done the research necessarily not sitting down and
- 12:40having a list of questions, which I've actually kind of got
- 12:43away from. Yeah, I love that.
- 12:45That's great, great growth. And it's certainly, you can hear
- 12:49that and see that in your style through Episode 1 from 2:50 to
- 12:52100 to 150. You definitely have grown and
- 12:55become a really, really good interview.
- 12:56Really, really proud of you for that.
- 12:58All right, last two questions here.
- 13:00Where can we find the podcast? Are you exclusive to any certain
- 13:03podcast app? Are you on YouTube?
- 13:05Where can we find the podcast? We're on every single podcast
- 13:08platform, you know, and whenever I try to throw things out there,
- 13:11it's on Spotify or Apple. Those shouldn't be the top two.
- 13:15We are not on YouTube. One of the things that the the
- 13:19guests have really loved is not being on camera.
- 13:22I mean, I was Carl Lewis was in his kitchen while his wife was
- 13:25doing dishes behind him. And I, I think I had a couple of
- 13:29guests that were literally like no makeup, completely sweaty,
- 13:33gross hair, disheveled, and they were like on their phones.
- 13:36Like I'm so glad I'm not in film right now.
- 13:38I'm like, yeah, yeah, it's okay. So we're not on YouTube.
- 13:41I think one day that'd be nice to get on there on
- 13:44trackandfield.com is the website where you want to go to to for
- 13:49the actual, the actual company and you will not regret it.
- 13:53I mean, my wife is a runner. She's not a coach, but she goes
- 13:56there and gets all her marathon running shoes.
- 13:58So it's for the average person, but also for everybody else,
- 14:01especially track coaches. And they sell a lot of Gill,
- 14:04which I have also purchased as a track coach.
- 14:07So thank you for my pole vault landing system.
- 14:09Thank you, brother. Thank you.
- 14:10So with with all that said, I think you know, you can just
- 14:13Google it. I mean it's so easy to find on
- 14:15track and field is just the name of it and it's easy to find.
- 14:19Yep. You know, we know that the
- 14:21average podcast listener listens to between 7:00 and 10:00,
- 14:24different podcast shows out there.
- 14:27Assuming this is an assumption since you're a podcast host that
- 14:29you maybe listen to podcast yourself, what's your favorite
- 14:32podcast that's not track related?
- 14:36Now you're asking about my Spotify rap.
- 14:39Yeah, when I, when I look at my Spotify rap, the RE Watchables,
- 14:44that's my favorite one. And then all the rest of them
- 14:47have nothing to do with track and field.
- 14:49They have everything to do with just being dumb funny.
- 14:53I really like my brother. My brother and me.
- 14:55Those three dudes are so funny. ANYWAYS, yeah, I do a lot of
- 15:00audio books as well as podcasts, and I've gone away with music,
- 15:04which I have. But it's funny when I have those
- 15:06workouts now, maybe because I'm older, the workouts are now not
- 15:09heavy metal in your face screaming music.
- 15:12It's now more a sermon, you know, by Tim Keller, or it's an
- 15:16audio book, or it's going to be something like a podcast that
- 15:20has nothing to do with anything. It's just fun and it's noise in
- 15:23the background. Yeah, I love that very much.
- 15:25All right, listener, so here you see we're at the end of our show
- 15:28here. So here's my challenge to you.
- 15:30Press pause on today's podcast and go in the same app there.
- 15:33You're what you're listening to right now and just search on
- 15:35track and field podcast. I bet you could even search JT
- 15:38airs and that will pop it up. But go, here's the way I kind of
- 15:41like to explore a new podcast 1 is go to their latest show
- 15:44that'll kind of give you what their latest flavor and style
- 15:47and format kind of is. But then you heard some of his
- 15:49favorites and most popular ones out there.
- 15:51Go check out, go back to the back library and check those
- 15:54out. And so you can see kind of the
- 15:55highlights of what they've done here over the past several years
- 15:59with the on track and field podcast.
- 16:00And then hit that subscribe button because then you'll be
- 16:02automatically notified and download when they have their
- 16:04next episode that comes up. And it's going to be highly
- 16:07worth it. I hope this show piques your
- 16:09interest. I hope it explores and opens up
- 16:11your mind with some track field stuff and it's the right thing
- 16:13to add to your library. So JT, thank you so much for
- 16:16being here today. And guys, thank you for being
- 16:17here and press and play.
