Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Inside Scoop On NASCAR Charter Drama

- 0:00Hi everybody, Rick Mast here on the Rick Mast Show on the Kenny
- 0:03Wallace show platform. I want to talk to you today a
- 0:07little bit about this charter deal, okay?
- 0:09The NASCAR charter deal I spent, we went to Land of Motor
- 0:13Speedway Sunday and I spent the, the morning in the garage area
- 0:16trying to talk to some folks and figure out, try to figure out
- 0:19what was going on. And then when when that ended,
- 0:21we went up the grandstands, watch the race.
- 0:23I had my children with me, went to the grandstands, watch the
- 0:25race. We're going to do it.
- 0:27We're going to do another video on that because that's
- 0:29important. We need to talk about that.
- 0:31But anyhow, when I left the garage area, I felt like I had a
- 0:34pretty good understanding of what, what's kind of been going
- 0:36on and what's happening and what the deal is.
- 0:39So then I read a report some some reporter put out a a story
- 0:46and they were talking about how the owners were forced by NASCAR
- 0:50to sign this agreement. And they went on just bad mouth
- 0:54and NASCAR bad mouth and how it was done, put the owners in the
- 0:58bad spot, blah, blah, blah. Typical negative journalism
- 1:01about our sport that I always gripe about.
- 1:03And I remember thinking, now you talk to either different people
- 1:07that I talk to, or the people lied to me, or they lied to you,
- 1:11or you tried to make a story out of a generalization, or somebody
- 1:15may have said something, I don't know.
- 1:17But I do know this. I don't get lied to those folks
- 1:20that I talked to in the garage area, guys, they don't lie to
- 1:23me. All right.
- 1:24So anyhow, but regardless of all that, the two takeaways, I had
- 1:28two takeaways when I, when I left that garage area #1 the big
- 1:32thing was a sign of relief. These guys were just so relieved
- 1:37that this was over. And you got to remember, they've
- 1:39been fighting this thing for two years.
- 1:40They've been fighting it and NASCAR's been fighting it.
- 1:43That's number one. Number two was the general
- 1:46feeling that when you're negotiating, 2 or more parties
- 1:49are negotiating some kind of deal, business deal,
- 1:50relationship, whatever it might be.
- 1:52When it's over, neither side gets 100% of what they want.
- 1:56And I mean, I've been in those my whole life negotiating deals.
- 1:59Hardly ever do you have one side that gets 100% of what they
- 2:03want, right. And that's that's kind of where
- 2:04this fell in line. I mean, the teams didn't get
- 2:08100% of everything they thought they wanted or needed.
- 2:12NASCAR didn't get 100% of everything they wanted or needed
- 2:15or thought. OK.
- 2:17So to me, it's just a typical, typical business deal that I
- 2:21relationship a thing that just, you know, they come down to, you
- 2:25know, this is the best. This is all this side's going to
- 2:27give. This is all this side's going to
- 2:29give. Here's where we are sign the
- 2:30deal or or don't happen, right? And that's kind of what
- 2:33happened. So the owners that I talked to,
- 2:36it was just just just such a sigh of relief, right?
- 2:40Been going through this for two years.
- 2:42You know, they can get on to the business of racing now, they can
- 2:45get on the business of planning what they're going to do.
- 2:47You know, you got sponsorship, you got all this stuff that that
- 2:50revolves around this and this charter deal, man, it's a big
- 2:53deal. I mean, it's a big ass deal.
- 2:55You know, it really goes back to talk about it, how the
- 2:57beginnings back in the 90s when our sport was so popular, you
- 3:01know, I mean, the sponsors in those days, man, because they're
- 3:04so popular, we weren't beating them off at the door.
- 3:06But if you, if you had any kind of PR abilities about your team
- 3:11at all and and your reputable team, you were, you could get a
- 3:14sponsor. I mean, it was not easy, but it
- 3:16wasn't hard like it is now. I mean, you could get sponsors.
- 3:19And what happened was become so popular.
- 3:21We had 43 teams each week racing each week, right?
- 3:24Starting races, you had 43 for the most part.
- 3:28A lot of times there, I remember we had 434445 fully funded good
- 3:33race teams. OK.
- 3:35And what happened, we started sending some of these race teams
- 3:39home because they didn't make the race.
- 3:40I mean, we're talking like a Fortune 500 company sponsor that
- 3:44missed the race, right? And that's bad.
- 3:46That's not a good deal, man. You want these sponsors in these
- 3:49races. So that that's kind of what
- 3:51started the provisional thing where we start.
- 3:53We had a couple provisionals, then we added more provisionals,
- 3:56then we had the champion provisional, OK.
- 3:59That was kind of the prelude to the charter system and the
- 4:03charter system came along and that was one of its goals to do
- 4:06that. I think I heard Dale Junior say
- 4:07that that was that was the goal and the doubts morphed into
- 4:10being this franchise thing. Well, that was one of the goals,
- 4:13but one of the other goals of the franchise was to give owners
- 4:17value for their race, race team if they got out of the sport.
- 4:20I mean, every race team owner that ever was in our sport when
- 4:23he got out from you know, from that key coffer guy in the 50s
- 4:29right up through Junior Johnson, but more all these guys when
- 4:32they got out, the value of their team was whatever that welder
- 4:36and cutting torch and sheet metal equipment would bring out
- 4:38a yard sale or a fire sale, OK, That's the value of their team.
- 4:42So the charter thing, one of the Part 1 of the deals with the
- 4:45charter was in hopes that it would give value to that team
- 4:49owner, OK, So if he if he wanted or needed or wanted to leave the
- 4:53sport, he could sell his charter and have some blue.
- 4:56So we call it blue sky value or value more than just a fire sale
- 5:00equipment sale would be. And, and really over the years,
- 5:04this thing has has morphed into thinking it's a franchise thing
- 5:08and it's not a franchise thing, man.
- 5:09We're not the MLB, we're not NFL.
- 5:12Our, our system, our entity's different.
- 5:14Our, our business model is not like any of the other
- 5:16professional sports. This, this is not a franchise
- 5:18situation. You know, we're still
- 5:20independent contractors, everybody's independent
- 5:22contractor. So, you know, the new TV deal
- 5:26and that that's kind of how this all got up to where we're at
- 5:28now, right? So the new TV deal comes along
- 5:31and everybody's wanting a bigger piece of that pie.
- 5:33I mean, the teams are wanting a bigger piece of the pie and some
- 5:36other things. And you know, for two years
- 5:38they've been negotiating. They waited on the TV deal to
- 5:40get signed. That was a big thing.
- 5:42We got to get the TV deal signed.
- 5:43All right, we got that signed. Now we can get serious about our
- 5:46negotiations. Well, they did.
- 5:48And it it got to the point where it's very obvious NASCAR wasn't
- 5:52going to give any more. They said, here's what we're
- 5:54going to do, right? And the team owners said, you
- 5:56know, well, this is this is all we can give.
- 5:59So when when you get to those deals in these situations,
- 6:04that's when everybody has to step down and think, all right,
- 6:06what's the best? What's the best?
- 6:08What's the best deal for me? What, what, what, what do I need
- 6:11to do? Do I need to sign this deal or I
- 6:14do I need to walk away? All right, all the guys that I
- 6:18talked to wanted this thing done.
- 6:21They wanted it over with. They were tired of dealing with
- 6:23it. They were tired of taking up so
- 6:25much of the time, so much of the efforts, so many on questions or
- 6:29questions unanswered about what what are we going to do going
- 6:31forth by race team? What, you know, this charter
- 6:33deal is just signed. It's not signed.
- 6:35We're going to have charters, not going to have starters.
- 6:37I mean, have I got to have a different sponsor?
- 6:39Has my structure got to be different?
- 6:40You know, all these things that go through these owners minds or
- 6:43deals, right about whether this charter thing is going to happen
- 6:46or not or what what, what's it going to look like?
- 6:50All got put to bid. It all got put to bid.
- 6:51It's all arrested with the exception of of 2323 X 23.
- 6:58Michael Jordan did the Hamlin team in front row.
- 7:02Obviously they they feel stronger that they want.
- 7:06And that's the other thing too. Nobody would come off the hip
- 7:08about what more concessions they want and back up a little bit.
- 7:12Nobody, the people I talked to, nobody talked about any specific
- 7:15things with me. All right?
- 7:17Like specifically, we didn't get this or we wanted that and we
- 7:20got that. But here's what's going on.
- 7:22So when we talk about Michael Jordan, Denny Hamlin's team in
- 7:27front row, then again, nobody would give specifics about it.
- 7:32And to be honest with you, I know a couple of the guys talked
- 7:35to me about it. They didn't even know what the
- 7:37specifics were. They kind of thought maybe they
- 7:38might know, but they didn't. They weren't 100% sure exactly
- 7:41what those teams were, were holding out for.
- 7:45OK. And you know, that's, that's
- 7:47fine because they, they got their own deal.
- 7:49Now moving forward, what's going to happen?
- 7:51Hell, I don't know. You know, I, I, it's hard for me
- 7:53to believe that, gosh, that team won't be here next year or front
- 7:58row for that motors for that matter.
- 7:59It's that I just kind of find that unfathomable, but that they
- 8:03wouldn't be part of our sport. This thing will get worked out.
- 8:06The other part of it is, you know, if, if, if they do come
- 8:09off the hip of something a little bit more generous that if
- 8:13NASCAR does do that, then you know, that'll, that'll go
- 8:16through all the teams, I'm sure. But you got to understand, man,
- 8:19NASCAR, NASCAR is a dictatorship.
- 8:22They always have been. You know it, it's been that way
- 8:24since the beginning. And, and you go into it knowing
- 8:26that and it's a very viable successful dictatorship, right?
- 8:32And one of the reasons that it's been successful, in my opinion,
- 8:35is that it's a dictatorship. It always has been.
- 8:39And I think that's one of the reasons that this thing exploded
- 8:42the way it did through the 80s and 90s, the decisions that were
- 8:46made with Mr. France and Mr. France junior.
- 8:48And now everybody that's in charge of it now, you know it,
- 8:52it's, it's their game. We all, when you come into this
- 8:54sport as an owner or driver, whatever, you know the deal,
- 8:57right? You know, you know the business.
- 8:59If you're coming in as a as a driver, of course, you know all
- 9:02that. But if you come in as a, as a
- 9:03owner, you, you know the structure, you know the business
- 9:06structure of this sport, you know what it is.
- 9:08You know, you, you should know if you've got any scruples at
- 9:11all or any smarts, you should know what you're facing, what
- 9:14your battles are going to be, the financial part of it, what
- 9:17that's going to entail and what it's going to mean.
- 9:20And you know, when you get here and you do that right then, you
- 9:24know, I don't know how you're going to think you're going to
- 9:28change that when the people have been here for 30 years as
- 9:30owners, 20 years, integral part of our, of our sport.
- 9:36Would they agree to this thing? You know, I'm not sure how that
- 9:40plays with with the guys that don't sound.
- 9:42I'm not criticizing 23. I'm not criticizing those guys.
- 9:46I'm just telling you facts of of kind of how this sport is and
- 9:50the way it is. And, and, and you know, you
- 9:53sometimes, man, you got to swallow your pie to just, you
- 9:56know, go with the best, move your best foot forward and and
- 9:59and go with it. But you know, for I guess my
- 10:03point, here's what I'm trying to say, guy.
- 10:04Here's what all that means. You don't bully NASCAR.
- 10:06You just don't do it. You you don't bully it out.
- 10:09I remember Denny said on his podcast a while back, you know,
- 10:11they talked about, you know, we've all heard his drivers and
- 10:15all this sport was here. If you causing a problem, you go
- 10:17to NASCAR, they'll tell you this sport was here before you got
- 10:20here. It'll be here when you're gone.
- 10:22Now, if you want to be here and enjoy it while you're here,
- 10:24fine. If not, you go on.
- 10:26Right. And it it's always been that
- 10:28way. And Denny was talking about, you
- 10:29know, I'm not sure that that holds as much weight as it used
- 10:32to. OK, Well, I'm not sure that
- 10:34Denny's right correct on that. I'm, I'm not sure about that
- 10:37one, but you know, NASCAR is never been bullied, OK?
- 10:42You're not going to bully them. You're not going to bully them
- 10:44today, right? I mean, that that's just, it's
- 10:47ingrained in a man. It's just the way they operate.
- 10:49They've been so super successful with the way this thing has been
- 10:53run for all these years. Yeah.
- 10:55And I know we're in a new era and it's just 2024 and all that,
- 10:58but the basic design of this sport and the basic philosophy
- 11:02of of this sport and what got it towards that and what needs to
- 11:06be going forward, You know, you're, you're not going to, I
- 11:09don't think you're going to change NASCAR's thinking in
- 11:13that. And they have evolved.
- 11:14They've evolved big time. I can tell you the truth.
- 11:16They've done a lot of things that really surprised me.
- 11:18I didn't think they would ever do just, you know, but it's all
- 11:21about the betterment of the sport and, and, and they, you
- 11:24know, they stick to their guns, you know, they, they stick to
- 11:27it. I mean, a lot of times I've seen
- 11:28this with other other owners over the years, man, the other
- 11:31owners will have have valid points.
- 11:32And I'm thinking, man, they're exactly right.
- 11:34And NASCAR bucks them right And they don't go along and it turns
- 11:37out, well, I'll be damned. NASCAR was right about that, you
- 11:40know, you know, I've just seen it.
- 11:42So it happened so many times. I'm you know that.
- 11:46But anyhow, I wanted just to tell you for fact, facts, facts,
- 11:51actual facts, what these owners are thinking, number one, it's
- 11:55over with. It's relief.
- 11:57My deal's signed, I don't have to worry about that crap no more
- 12:00#2 I didn't get everything I wanted, but it's good enough for
- 12:03me to survive and thrive and keep on going, OK?
- 12:07That's all you. That's all you really need to
- 12:08know about this charter deal. You know, whatever happens with
- 12:11Jordan Hamlin's team in front row, you know, whatever happens,
- 12:14they'll get it worked out one way or the other and we'll go on
- 12:16down the road and race next week.
- 12:17So anyhow, just wanted to pass that along to you guys.
- 12:20I felt like y'all deserve to know you know exactly how most
- 12:24of these guys feel. Toodaloo, goodbye.
