- 0:00SPEAKER_11: From the peaks of the smokies to the banks of the Mississippi.
- 0:06SPEAKER_11: This is your hall for the University of Tennessee.
- 0:26SPEAKER_11: Inside access, behind the scenes.
- 0:29SPEAKER_11: From Rocky Top, direct from the coaches.
- 0:32SPEAKER_11: Insight from the players.
- 0:34SPEAKER_11: The inside draft.
- 0:36SPEAKER_11: Mike Keith starts now.
- 0:41SPEAKER_08: Welcome to the Mike Keith Show delivered by Uber Eats, and we're just diving right in.
- 0:46SPEAKER_08: Just diving right in with football at Edwin Spillman, number 13 for your Tennessee volunteers, a graduate of Lipscomb Academy in Nashville.
- 0:56SPEAKER_08: The Mustangs.
- 0:57SPEAKER_08: Yes, sir.
- 0:58SPEAKER_08: You are a Mustang?
- 0:59SPEAKER_08: Yes, sir.
- 1:00SPEAKER_08: They were our rivals.
- 1:02SPEAKER_08: Were they?
- 1:02SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:02SPEAKER_08: What school did you go to?
- 1:03SPEAKER_08: BGA.
- 1:04SPEAKER_08: BGA?
- 1:05SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 1:06SPEAKER_08: Oh, here we go.
- 1:07SPEAKER_08: They're good.
- 1:07SPEAKER_08: They're a good program.
- 1:08SPEAKER_08: So this is going to get off on the complete wrong foot.
- 1:11SPEAKER_08: No.
- 1:12SPEAKER_08: Love my Middle Tennessee guys on the team, and you guys are continuing to make a big impact.
- 1:18SPEAKER_08: I'm watching you play and you show up at big moments in this defense.
- 1:23SPEAKER_08: A couple weeks ago, you got a sack and your tackles for loss.
- 1:27SPEAKER_08: And is is that the kind of design is that when you're part of whatever package it is at linebacker, you get a chance to go blow things up?
- 1:36SPEAKER_14: Um, yeah, yes, sir.
- 1:38SPEAKER_14: Um being at a point attack is something that I love and value.
- 1:42SPEAKER_14: So whenever I do get my opportunity, I just go and make the most of it.
- 1:47SPEAKER_08: Are you technically the backup at all three of the linebacker spots too?
- 1:52SPEAKER_08: Yes, sir.
- 1:53SPEAKER_08: So you're a starter and yet you have to know every spot.
- 1:56SPEAKER_14: Yes, sir.
- 1:57SPEAKER_08: How hard is that?
- 1:58SPEAKER_14: Um, it's been, it's yeah, it's definitely a challenge, but it's been it's been good though.
- 2:03SPEAKER_08: Coach Knowles has tried to lift you up in that way because he believes that you can handle it.
- 2:08SPEAKER_08: Yes, sir.
- 2:09SPEAKER_08: How did he sort of put it to you that he was going to ask you to take on this incredibly challenging role?
- 2:16SPEAKER_14: Um, it was about spring.
- 2:19SPEAKER_14: Um, after we finished spring this this uh spring, um I just went up to his office and asked him just my evaluation of the spring and um how they see things moving forward.
- 2:31SPEAKER_14: Um, and then he kind of just uh told me the plan moving forward and um with my skill set and the things that I'm able to do, um, I'm able to do and play multiple positions.
- 2:42SPEAKER_14: So um, yeah, that's exactly what I do.
- 2:45SPEAKER_08: Is it confusing at times?
- 2:48SPEAKER_08: Um, yeah, it can be a little bit at a lot more study than you had to do before.
- 2:53SPEAKER_14: Yeah, exactly.
- 2:54SPEAKER_08: Just that.
- 2:55SPEAKER_14: Um, whole lot more film studies, um, playbook.
- 2:59SPEAKER_14: Um, yeah, just getting the playbook more.
- 3:02SPEAKER_08: What do you like about it most?
- 3:04SPEAKER_14: Um, really just you can be on the field at any any position, anytime.
- 3:08SPEAKER_14: Um, you can go out there and make plays.
- 3:10SPEAKER_14: Um, that's what I do.
- 3:12SPEAKER_14: And um, yeah, so it's just available and you can go and make plays at any position you want to just blowing stuff up.
- 3:18SPEAKER_14: Yes, sir.
- 3:19SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 3:20SPEAKER_08: So has there been a point?
- 3:21SPEAKER_08: I don't want you to say anybody's name, but has there been a point that you've looked at the opposing quarterback and he has seen what you're lined up, not just you, but the front on defense and everything, and he's just kind of going.
- 3:33SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 3:34SPEAKER_14: Um, that's happened plenty of times this season.
- 3:36SPEAKER_14: Already.
- 3:37SPEAKER_14: Yes, sir.
- 3:37SPEAKER_14: But they're just that the guy's just like, I they just they don't they don't understand what they're they're looking at or what they're seeing until the ball is snapped, and then at that point it's too late.
- 3:47SPEAKER_14: So um coach Knowles and Coach Eachus and Coach Dex, they they do a great job of showing pictures and fronts and then switching it up right at the snap.
- 3:57SPEAKER_14: So it's it's been awesome.
- 3:59SPEAKER_08: The other guys, having Ariane Carter back, um, getting to know Campbell the way you have, obviously, knowing T Lander the way you do.
- 4:09SPEAKER_08: What is it about Amari and Jeremiah and Ariane that make them so special as a group and the four of you such an outstanding group?
- 4:18SPEAKER_14: Um, I feel like everybody just brings uh different abilities and different personalities to the table.
- 4:26SPEAKER_14: Um and everybody just comes in every day and works for Tennessee and gives their all for Tennessee.
- 4:32SPEAKER_14: So um I think that's just how we go and execute and we go and make plays for each other.
- 4:38SPEAKER_14: Is Carter like a big brother?
- 4:40SPEAKER_14: Um, I would say um all those guys I look up to, and um, yeah, I'm very appreciative of all of them.
- 4:46SPEAKER_08: What does Amari Campbell do better?
- 4:49SPEAKER_08: Because we don't know him as well.
- 4:50SPEAKER_08: He just transferred in from Penn State.
- 4:52SPEAKER_08: What does he do well that is really helping make the defense go?
- 4:56SPEAKER_14: Um, he just brings so much knowledge.
- 4:58SPEAKER_14: Um, I mean, he's been with Coach Knowles for almost two or three years now.
- 5:03SPEAKER_14: Um, he understands the system and he's a very smart player too.
- 5:08SPEAKER_14: So um, yeah, that's what he brings.
- 5:10SPEAKER_08: Where do you want to see this defense get better the second half of the season?
- 5:15SPEAKER_14: Um I would just say uh just cleaning up the little things, whether it's tackling um for the linebackers, um, just finishing up on whether it's our gap fits, uh finishing up on tackles, um, and then just clearing things up in the back end.
- 5:31SPEAKER_14: And yeah.
- 5:32SPEAKER_08: Set football to the side for just a second.
- 5:34SPEAKER_08: What all's going on with Edmund Spillman right now?
- 5:37SPEAKER_14: Um, right now, currently just school and then um football, obviously, and then um yeah, that's mostly.
- 5:45SPEAKER_14: Okay, so you know that makes sense.
- 5:47SPEAKER_14: School, what are you majoring in?
- 5:48SPEAKER_14: Um in sports management.
- 5:50SPEAKER_08: Sports management, it's a great major here.
- 5:52SPEAKER_08: You know, it's one of the first programs in the country.
- 5:56SPEAKER_08: Dr.
- 5:56SPEAKER_08: Buck Jones founded it here in the late 80s.
- 5:59SPEAKER_08: It was one of the first we were one of the first schools in the country that had sports management, which is why it's such a great degree here.
- 6:06SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 6:06SPEAKER_08: What do you want to do in sports outside of go to the NFL?
- 6:09SPEAKER_14: I know that, but um, I was thinking about coaching.
- 6:12SPEAKER_14: Really?
- 6:12SPEAKER_14: Um, yeah, yeah, getting into coaching and um just being like to others and sharing my knowledge of the game through that too.
- 6:20SPEAKER_08: Do you think a big part of that is because of the types of coaches that you had at Lipscomb and and what a difference they made in your journey?
- 6:29SPEAKER_14: Yes, sir.
- 6:29SPEAKER_14: Um, I've had the opportunity to have tons of great coaches um just in the short time um that I've been playing really.
- 6:37SPEAKER_14: But um, yeah, all those guys have made a tremendous impact on me as a man and as a player, too.
- 6:44SPEAKER_08: I think the best thing that came out of Saturday's win at Arkansas is when Coach Heipel came in and mentioned that William Inge, your position coach, yeah, had improved enough that he was going to be able to get home.
- 6:56SPEAKER_08: Uh can you describe that journey for your group and going through that with a guy who means so much to you?
- 7:05SPEAKER_14: Um, yeah, it's definitely um it's definitely been tough um on uh all the guys and definitely on Miss Inge and Um Kiara and Ray.
- 7:18SPEAKER_14: Um but this definitely just shows you how big God is truly and how much of a blessing it is um just to wake up every single day and um be you and be who you are.
- 7:30SPEAKER_14: Um I feel like uh people sometimes take it um just for granted, um, just that they're waking up and um just seeing what Coach Ange has gone through and how God has come through and delivered um just shows you how truly big of a God he is.
- 7:47SPEAKER_08: And how big Coach Ange is because man, what a battler.
- 7:51SPEAKER_08: Everything he preached to you guys, he's done through this fight to get because I mean this is medically miraculous.
- 8:02SPEAKER_14: Yeah, yeah, 100%.
- 8:03SPEAKER_14: Um yeah, Coach Ange is a strong, very strong man, uh very strong-minded man, um, leads from example, and um yeah, it's truly been a blessing that um God has helped him uh throughout this whole journey.
- 8:17SPEAKER_08: Tennessee, Alabama, what does it mean to Edwin Spillman?
- 8:22SPEAKER_14: Um it means a lot.
- 8:23SPEAKER_14: It means a whole lot to me.
- 8:25SPEAKER_14: Um, obviously being from Tennessee um and being here for three years now and seeing just how the rival is and all the um excitement and um the traditions that goes into it.
- 8:37SPEAKER_14: Um it means a lot to our team and our program, and um, we're very excited uh for this weekend and to go and perform.
- 8:44SPEAKER_08: What do you think about the fact that you're gonna be in your orange and they're gonna be in their crimson Saturday afternoon?
- 8:51SPEAKER_14: Um, those are the two the two colors right there everybody gets excited to watch in October.
- 8:56SPEAKER_14: So um, yeah, we're just we're just excited really.
- 9:00SPEAKER_08: What is your kneeling moment so far in your career?
- 9:05SPEAKER_14: I'll probably say third downs um Oklahoma when I got the sack.
- 9:12SPEAKER_14: Um and the crowd went crazy.
- 9:15SPEAKER_14: That was probably one of my favorite kneeling moments.
- 9:18SPEAKER_14: Um and then Auburn too.
- 9:20SPEAKER_14: Um really just any third down in kneeling.
- 9:24SPEAKER_14: Um, yeah, that place gets shaken.
- 9:26SPEAKER_08: Especially when you hit the quarterback.
- 9:28SPEAKER_14: Exactly.
- 9:28SPEAKER_14: When you get home.
- 9:29SPEAKER_08: That's fantastic.
- 9:30SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 9:31SPEAKER_08: Um also pilot.
- 9:33SPEAKER_08: Okay, let's say you're gonna go to the basketball exhibition at Food City Center, Tennessee, Xavier Thursday night, 7 o'clock.
- 9:43SPEAKER_08: So you're gonna get some snacks at Pilot.
- 9:45SPEAKER_08: What is Edwin Spillman getting?
- 9:47SPEAKER_14: Um, I gotta give me some trolley uh gummy snacks.
- 9:53SPEAKER_14: Um, and then I'll probably go with a blue powder.
- 9:57SPEAKER_14: Um just keep it chill with that.
- 9:59SPEAKER_08: Nice.
- 9:59SPEAKER_14: Yes, sir.
- 10:00SPEAKER_08: No chocolate.
- 10:01SPEAKER_14: No chocolate, no chocolate.
- 10:03SPEAKER_08: Is that because it's not allowed?
- 10:05SPEAKER_14: Um, yeah, I wouldn't I wouldn't think Dio would like that too well, but yeah.
- 10:10SPEAKER_08: But if if he didn't know, what candy bar would you get?
- 10:15SPEAKER_14: Candy bar?
- 10:19SPEAKER_14: I'd probably have to go either Snickers or um Milky Way.
- 10:24SPEAKER_08: Milky Way.
- 10:25SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 10:25SPEAKER_14: Underrated Milky Way.
- 10:26SPEAKER_14: Yeah.
- 10:26SPEAKER_14: Yeah, sir.
- 10:27SPEAKER_08: Pilot takes care of this guy and takes care of the Vols, the official travel partner of the University of Tennessee's athletic programs.
- 10:34SPEAKER_08: Thank you again.

- 12:20SPEAKER_19: It was a normal day going to the game with my son, but this time it felt like a sledgehammer hit my chest.
- 12:27SPEAKER_19: The UT medical team knew exactly what they needed to do, and just kept me calm throughout the process.
- 12:33SPEAKER_19: It was probably the most serious heart attack that you could have.
- 12:37SPEAKER_19: The team took care of me, worked quickly, efficiently, and I did catch the end of the game.

- 14:50SPEAKER_08: So I'm getting ready for Tennessee Basketball Exhibition Against Xavier, Thursday night Food City Center, 7 o'clock tip.
- 14:57SPEAKER_08: You can hear it on the ball network at 6:30.
- 15:00SPEAKER_08: And so I'm going through the numbers, and Tennessee's got a zero.
- 15:04SPEAKER_08: They have a one, two, a three, they have a four, and then it skips to six.
- 15:10SPEAKER_08: There is no five.
- 15:12SPEAKER_08: That's because five's sitting right here.
- 15:15SPEAKER_08: Chris Lofton, the University of Tennessee Athletics Hall of Famer, who's number five is retired and will be back this year to join me on the ball radio network for Tennessee Hoops.
- 15:29SPEAKER_08: And boy, it has been a fascinating offseason.
- 15:33SPEAKER_06: Yes, it has.
- 15:34SPEAKER_06: Just how college basketball works these days is so different when I play, so it's exciting.
- 15:38SPEAKER_06: You get new players almost every year, new philosophies, and so much unknown, you know, which I love.
- 15:45SPEAKER_08: Let's talk about last year's team.
- 15:47SPEAKER_08: So they built around Nate A Matt.
- 15:50SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 15:51SPEAKER_08: And they had Jacoby Gillespie, who was the point guard and a scorer.
- 15:56SPEAKER_08: And so the offense was really built around those two players.
- 16:00SPEAKER_08: As you look at this team, who's the offense built around?
- 16:04SPEAKER_08: Or is it built around any one player or two players?
- 16:08SPEAKER_06: I think, honestly, there's so many different weapons, and that's what Coach Barnes wanted.
- 16:13SPEAKER_06: We wanted more than, you know, last year was Nate and Jacoby.
- 16:16SPEAKER_06: Now we got options.
- 16:17SPEAKER_06: And, you know, it's going to be fun to watch with all the new guys, the newcomers, and because each of them can score in different ways.
- 16:24SPEAKER_06: And I'm excited to see it.
- 16:26SPEAKER_08: When you see a guy like Tyler Lundblade shoot, being the shooter that you were, and I know you've watched him a little bit.
- 16:34SPEAKER_08: What do you think watching somebody like him go from like 30 feet away as consistently as he's able to do?
- 16:41SPEAKER_06: That tells me he puts in a lot of work and he's he's real confident in his shot.
- 16:48SPEAKER_06: And what I love, I remember seeing him work out in the summer and just always in the gym.
- 16:53SPEAKER_06: And that gets my eye, especially for you know, for newcomers, and you know, because you gotta love it.
- 16:58SPEAKER_06: You know, Coach Barnes is a coach where you have to love the game to be here, and because you're gonna be in that gym, and that let me know first when I first saw him that he's ready for this.
- 17:12SPEAKER_08: He's already preseason, first team, all SEC.
- 17:15SPEAKER_08: In Chris Lofton's mind, what makes Juke Harris that guy?
- 17:20SPEAKER_06: Just he can score the ball in different ways, you know.
- 17:23SPEAKER_06: And he's six six, uh six sixes.
- 17:27SPEAKER_06: So, I mean, he can shoot over a lot of guys.
- 17:29SPEAKER_06: And he, you know, he can he can get to the rim and he just makes plays and he's a big shot maker.
- 17:34SPEAKER_08: He is a big shot maker, and he can rebound and and he'll play some defense too.
- 17:38SPEAKER_08: I'm interested in the backcourt in Day Day Ames and Terrence Hill, because I wonder who's the point guard and who's the off guard.
- 17:47SPEAKER_08: Now, if you talk with them, they say, Well, I'm a point guard and I'm an off guard.
- 17:52SPEAKER_08: Both they say that.
- 17:53SPEAKER_08: So one trip down, one guy's running the point, and another trip down, the other guy's running the point.
- 18:00SPEAKER_08: How does that work?
- 18:01SPEAKER_06: I think whoever has the ball, you know, that combo guard is real important these days in in basketball.
- 18:07SPEAKER_06: You know, it's positionless basketball.
- 18:09SPEAKER_06: You know, you have to do multiple things now.
- 18:11SPEAKER_06: You know, a lot of great teams have that.
- 18:12SPEAKER_06: And with Dayday and Terrence, I think that's what they're going to be.
- 18:15SPEAKER_06: You know, like you said, one possession, they might have the ball bringing up starting the offense, the next Mike Terrence.
- 18:20SPEAKER_06: You just never know.
- 18:21SPEAKER_06: And I think that gives the offense different looks.
- 18:25SPEAKER_06: You know, the defense can't just key on one person like last year with Jacoby with the ball.
- 18:30SPEAKER_06: So now you got two people that can bring it up, and then you know, you got Harrelson that can bring it up too.
- 18:35SPEAKER_06: Well, let's talk about Harrelson.
- 18:36SPEAKER_08: Because he's 6'8, and it it feels like he almost plays that point forward, that European style.
- 18:43SPEAKER_08: And I mean, you've certainly seen it yourself from your own basketball experience.
- 18:47SPEAKER_08: Who is he as a player transferring from Notre Dame?
- 18:49SPEAKER_06: Great player.
- 18:50SPEAKER_06: The few practices I watched this summer, he was in the mid-post catching it, facing up, shooting, um, like starting the offense, and you know, kind of like a Draymond Greenish for the Warriors, just bringing it up, starting the offense, and he just so many does so many different things, and just a dynamic player who's gonna help us a lot.
- 19:06SPEAKER_08: Do you think Rick Barnes has ever had a style of the team that he's gonna put out there this year in terms of how they're going to operate?
- 19:16SPEAKER_06: Not that I remember a Tennessee.
- 19:18SPEAKER_06: I don't remember a team like that made like this.
- 19:21SPEAKER_06: And you know, I think that's something they they talked about in the offseason.
- 19:24SPEAKER_06: You know, I talked to some of the season coaches, and that's something they really wanted to do this year, bring in a lot of guards that could score and let's go from there.
- 19:34SPEAKER_06: Okay, you were a scorer.
- 19:35SPEAKER_08: You like to shoot.
- 19:36SPEAKER_08: Of course.
- 19:37SPEAKER_08: Is it is it hard in these because everybody we've talked about so far can score.
- 19:43SPEAKER_06: Is that hard with the theory of there's only one basketball?
- 19:46SPEAKER_06: It depends who you are.
- 19:47SPEAKER_06: I think Coach Barnes and his staff is going to preach to him like, you know, everybody and I get 20 points a night, but your eight are gonna be important.
- 19:55SPEAKER_06: Your seven is gonna be important.
- 19:57SPEAKER_06: And you know, when you have all those different options, uh you're a better team.
- 20:01SPEAKER_06: You know, I like like in Europe, the best teams, guys average five, six guys average like nine or ten points.
- 20:08SPEAKER_06: And that's what makes them so good because any even night, somebody can give you twenty, somebody can give you thirty.
- 20:12SPEAKER_06: You just don't know.
- 20:13SPEAKER_06: You gotta be ready.
- 20:14SPEAKER_06: Who rebounds for this team?
- 20:16SPEAKER_06: Oh it's gonna be a collective.
- 20:19SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 20:20SPEAKER_06: Yeah, I think it's gonna be a collective of everybody.
- 20:22SPEAKER_06: Like when you have those, when you have those guards, they're gonna be shooting.
- 20:24SPEAKER_06: There's gonna be a lot of long rebounds, and long rebounds goes to guards a lot of times.
- 20:28SPEAKER_06: So I think there's gonna be a lot of guards with five or six rebounds a night.
- 20:32SPEAKER_08: But there are some questions about the post.
- 20:34SPEAKER_08: Yes, not meaning to demean the post players who've been brought in, but there's not the Felix Akpara type in this group.
- 20:41SPEAKER_08: I mean, Dwayne Brown is probably the most physical of the group, and it's great to have him back, but he's he's six eight.
- 20:49SPEAKER_08: I mean, he's not the the rim protector that Akpara was.
- 20:52SPEAKER_06: Right.
- 20:52SPEAKER_06: And that's the question mark.
- 20:53SPEAKER_06: You know, I've talked to NBA Scouts, and that's what they say.
- 20:55SPEAKER_06: They're worried about the post, but I believe in our guys.
- 20:58SPEAKER_06: I believe that we'll make it work, you know, we'll get it done because I know Coach Barnes and his staff always figures it out.
- 21:04SPEAKER_06: All right, so Florida picked to win the league.
- 21:06SPEAKER_06: Did you have any problem with that?
- 21:07SPEAKER_06: I don't.
- 21:08SPEAKER_06: They they had everybody coming back, so I understand.
- 21:11SPEAKER_06: You know, they got their main core coming back, so they're they're gonna be good as always.
- 21:15SPEAKER_06: Tennessee picked fourth.
- 21:17SPEAKER_08: In terms of just like a I mean, you'd like to say Tennessee picked first because you love Tennessee.
- 21:21SPEAKER_08: I get it.
- 21:22SPEAKER_08: But in terms of prognostications, did you think that was fair?
- 21:26SPEAKER_08: I think so.
- 21:27SPEAKER_06: Just a lot of, I mean, what was it?
- 21:29SPEAKER_06: How many newcomers?
- 21:30SPEAKER_06: 10 newcomers.
- 21:32SPEAKER_06: So it's a lot of question marks.
- 21:34SPEAKER_06: So it's I understand top four, but honestly, Mike, who cares about preseason?
- 21:39SPEAKER_06: You know, like we gotta roll the ball out.
- 21:41SPEAKER_06: Like, so I'm not really big on the preseason stuff.
- 21:44SPEAKER_06: You know, I'll let's see when it when it gets down to it.
- 21:47SPEAKER_06: Well, and and that's right.
- 21:48SPEAKER_08: But I I thought as I as I reviewed that and looked at who was above 'em, I thought, you know, that's probably fair.
- 21:53SPEAKER_08: Yeah, yeah, I agree.
- 21:54SPEAKER_08: In terms of how many questions they have and things like this.
- 21:59SPEAKER_08: All right.
- 21:59SPEAKER_08: So Xavier, first exhibition game.
- 22:03SPEAKER_08: What is Rick Barnes and the staff?
- 22:06SPEAKER_08: What are they really looking for in the first exhibition?
- 22:09SPEAKER_06: It's one of those where you've been practicing all summer.
- 22:12SPEAKER_06: Let's see what it looks like against real, real, real in a real game.
- 22:16SPEAKER_06: And you know, the rotations, the lineups, you know, stuff you're going to tweak and see, like which lineups are the best.
- 22:22SPEAKER_06: Because, you know, exhibitions are for those.
- 22:24SPEAKER_06: Of course you want to win, but also you want to see who plays well together, what lineups you can use, possibly down the road, etc.
- 22:31SPEAKER_08: Do you look for small things that and we were talking before we came on that some of the football players play better on Saturdays than they do on the practice field.
- 22:40SPEAKER_08: That's natural.
- 22:41SPEAKER_08: Is that something you're looking for in exhibition games?
- 22:44SPEAKER_08: You say, oh, wait a minute.
- 22:46SPEAKER_08: When the lights come on, this guy's a little better at this than we had any idea.
- 22:51SPEAKER_06: Absolutely, because that's that's real.
- 22:52SPEAKER_06: That's real.
- 22:53SPEAKER_06: You know, I know guys that might not be the best practice players.
- 22:56SPEAKER_06: When those lights come out, something clicks, something's different, and they're in their turn, they're turned up, they're ready to go.
- 23:02SPEAKER_06: And I'm sure that's what we'll see today.
- 23:04SPEAKER_06: Somebody that maybe, you know, maybe fighting for a rotation spot, not there, but exhibition just takes the game to a whole nother level.
- 23:10SPEAKER_08: Okay, I'm gonna throw out a player that I'm really interested to watch in the two exhibition games, and I'll give you a second to think of yours.
- 23:17SPEAKER_08: Mine's Troy Henderson.
- 23:19SPEAKER_08: I thought Troy showed a lot of promise last year, and then he had the shoulder injury, and he played with a lot of pain.
- 23:25SPEAKER_08: He tried to go, he finally had to have the shoulder surgery.
- 23:29SPEAKER_08: He feels great.
- 23:30SPEAKER_08: I think you're starting to see him really shoot the basketball, and he could be an important factor on this team not being talked about because he knows how Barnes wants defense played.
- 23:41SPEAKER_08: He can shoot and score, he's a very confident player, and he can fit in.
- 23:46SPEAKER_08: They've trained him to be able to fit in at the point and at the wing.
- 23:50SPEAKER_08: So who is Chris Lofton's guy that you're most interested to watch in the two exhibitions?
- 23:56SPEAKER_08: I'm gonna say Dwayne Brown.
- 23:57SPEAKER_08: Dwayne Brown?
- 23:58SPEAKER_06: Yes, just because last year he's so much he's shown so much promise as a freshman.
- 24:03SPEAKER_06: And you know, I watched him practice this year, and he's uh been in the weight room, he's gotten a lot better, and I'm looking for him to take that leap, you know, as one of those leaders and guys that has a great year.
- 24:13SPEAKER_08: He had a little bit of the freshman wall down the stretch.
- 24:16SPEAKER_08: It seemed like he his production went down as the season went on.
- 24:20SPEAKER_08: So seeing him now, especially as one of the leaders of this basketball team, I think you can tell he took that freshman experience and said, Oh, here's what I've got to do.
- 24:29SPEAKER_06: Absolutely.
- 24:30SPEAKER_06: And you know, it's a learning experience because we all go through those tough times, and you know, Dwayne's one of those guys where I know he likes to work, and uh he's gonna be ready, he's gonna be ready this year, and uh I think his opportunity is gonna be bigger for sure.
- 24:43SPEAKER_06: You know who else will be ready?
- 24:44SPEAKER_06: Chris Lofton.
- 24:46SPEAKER_08: It's good to see you.
- 24:47SPEAKER_08: Again, there's a zero, there's a one, there's a two, there's a three, there's a four.
- 24:53SPEAKER_08: There's no five.
- 24:55SPEAKER_08: Because it's up in the rafters.
- 24:57SPEAKER_08: When we come back, can't wait for Alexi Cowan to have a great conversation with Chelsea Sutton of the Lady Ball volleyball team.
- 25:05SPEAKER_08: You know, they're red hot.
- 25:06SPEAKER_06: Yes, they are.
- 25:07SPEAKER_08: Have you seen the crowds they're drawing to?
- 25:08SPEAKER_08: Yes, I have.
- 25:09SPEAKER_08: It's great.
- 25:10SPEAKER_08: That's gonna be a wonderful conversation.
- 25:12SPEAKER_08: That's next on the Mike Keith show delivered by Uber Eats.
- 25:16SPEAKER_11: This is your home for coaches and players.
- 25:19SPEAKER_10: One-on-one from Rocky Top.
- 25:22SPEAKER_10: This is your Ball Network.
- 25:29SPEAKER_08: From football and basketball, we turn to volleyball, where the Lady Balls have been red hot.
- 25:36SPEAKER_08: Alexi Cowan is standing by with one of the team standouts.
- 25:41SPEAKER_03: Thanks, Mike.
- 25:42SPEAKER_03: I'm here with Lady Ball Volleyball, superstar Chelsea Sutton.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: She's a junior here, coming off two sweeps this weekend.
- 25:50SPEAKER_03: You had a great weekend.
- 25:52SPEAKER_03: Eight kills, four blocks on Sunday against LSU.
- 25:55SPEAKER_03: Now, first off, you're from Pontevedra Beach.
- 25:58SPEAKER_03: Ponte Vidra Beach.
- 25:59SPEAKER_03: What?
- 26:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, say that again.
- 26:01SPEAKER_02: Ponte Vidra Beach.
- 26:01SPEAKER_03: Ponte Vidra.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 26:03SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: The big thing I was worried about, was your family affected by the hurricane at all?
- 26:08SPEAKER_02: No, we were not.
- 26:09SPEAKER_02: Uh, I think it actually just missed us.
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: Just some typical Florida rain.
- 26:13SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 26:14SPEAKER_02: Well, that's good.
- 26:15SPEAKER_02: I was worried.
- 26:16SPEAKER_03: You lead the team in blocks this year and last year.
- 26:20SPEAKER_03: A boss.
- 26:21SPEAKER_03: You've been a huge asset to the Lady Balls the past three years.
- 26:24SPEAKER_03: But what initially even brought you here to Tennessee?
- 26:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, definitely the coaches.
- 26:30SPEAKER_02: Um, and then just this like University of Tennessee, all the things that they provide for the athletes, and then my coach's mission of what they wanted, where they wanted to take the team.
- 26:39SPEAKER_02: Um, and then the girls themselves, like, no matter how who is on the team, like it always feels like a family.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: So that's been really special about this program.
- 26:46SPEAKER_03: It must be a family to you because you've been here all three years of college.
- 26:50SPEAKER_03: What's junior year been like so far?
- 26:53SPEAKER_02: It's been really fun.
- 26:54SPEAKER_02: Um, definitely learning a lot of new things.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: Um, I've been able to kind of like, I don't want to say a full leadership role, but like definitely being able to take on a bit more of that perspective um with some of our younger freshmen.
- 27:06SPEAKER_02: So it's been really nice.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: Well, something is going well.
- 27:10SPEAKER_03: I mean, three sweeps against Auburn, all miss.
- 27:14SPEAKER_03: LSU, what do you think has been working so well from a leadership perspective?
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: I think definitely just our team, dynamic and chemistry.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: You know, we have some really strong just people on our team, Caroline Kerr, Jalen Stout, Kennedy Rogers, um Chelsea Sunday.
- 27:29SPEAKER_02: Um, but you know, um, just when all of us, I feel like we all kind of like show up in our own way in different moments, and we always are able to like kind of like pick up for each other, and that makes it like a really well-rounded balance.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 27:43SPEAKER_03: Now, you're number 16.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: Is there a reason behind that?
- 27:47SPEAKER_02: I was actually just talking about this the other day.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: Um, I've never really been too concerned with my jersey.
- 27:53SPEAKER_02: I don't even remember.
- 27:54SPEAKER_02: What was I in high school?
- 27:55SPEAKER_02: I don't even remember.
- 27:57SPEAKER_02: Like 14 maybe.
- 27:58SPEAKER_02: I think that was taken.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: Um, but my mom was really big when I got here.
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: She was pushing for me to get 16 because of Peyton Manning.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: I figured out.
- 28:06SPEAKER_03: I wondered if it had a resemblance.
- 28:08SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 28:09SPEAKER_03: Now, behind the athlete, you were still a student.
- 28:12SPEAKER_03: You have changed over to sport management.
- 28:14SPEAKER_03: What do you love about sport management?
- 28:17SPEAKER_02: Just honestly being always in like the world of sports.
- 28:19SPEAKER_02: I always like knew from a very young age.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: I've could I've played sports like a walk, really, I feel like.
- 28:25SPEAKER_02: Um, and just being able to be like fully immersed and learning so much on the back end about like more administrative stuff and um facility management, event management, just everything has been really cool.
- 28:36SPEAKER_03: Now you have a really good group of girls around you, some beasts.
- 28:40SPEAKER_03: What's your favorite part about this specific group of ladyballs?
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: I think honestly, how much fire I think we bring on the court.
- 28:49SPEAKER_02: I mean, seriously, I was watching like some replays from last night and just like all like the yelling, like we all like that bent over screen.
- 28:55SPEAKER_02: And it's not just like one person who does it, like everyone like does it.
- 28:58SPEAKER_02: It's just the amount of like competitiveness, like fire we bring, and even in practice, it's awesome.
- 29:04SPEAKER_02: Oh, it's awesome to watch.
- 29:05SPEAKER_03: I mean, I'm sitting back there like But you have a great stretch of SEC matchups still to come, not even halfway through the season yet.
- 29:15SPEAKER_03: What do you hope to see in this team as you all keep going?
- 29:18SPEAKER_02: Just for us to like continue to kind of like find our groove, and I'm excited for us to just like go on and play more road matches.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: I feel like we have a lot of fun on the road.
- 29:27SPEAKER_02: Um, and it kind of brings out more of that like competitive side that we have because like we have like an everyone against us mentality.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: So it's just really nice when we all come together like that.
- 29:37SPEAKER_03: Okay, now for people that don't know you as well and they're just getting to know about Chelsea Sutton, I've got some rapid fires.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: Alright.
- 29:46SPEAKER_03: Are you ready?
- 29:47SPEAKER_02: I am ready.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: In the Halloween spirit, what's your favorite Halloween costume that you've ever had?
- 29:55SPEAKER_02: I don't know why this is like the first one that comes to my head.
- 29:58SPEAKER_02: The very first Halloween I got to pick my own costume.
- 30:00SPEAKER_02: I wanted to be a blue crayon.
- 30:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 30:03SPEAKER_02: So I was a blue crayon.
- 30:04SPEAKER_02: I think I was like the first one I ever like got to pick that like our parents and if I have a twin sister, so they would always make us do like a duo.
- 30:11SPEAKER_02: Was she like red crayon?
- 30:12SPEAKER_02: No mom even, I think she was a vampire.
- 30:14SPEAKER_02: Okay, so she went.
- 30:15SPEAKER_03: Okay, yeah.
- 30:16SPEAKER_03: That's when we broke off of the twin costume.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 30:19SPEAKER_03: Your favorite Tennessee sport to watch besides volleyball.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: There's a few.
- 30:27SPEAKER_02: Honestly, women's basketball is really fun.
- 30:29SPEAKER_02: I went to the Yukon game last year and that was just super fun.
- 30:32SPEAKER_02: It is a good matchup.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: Any pregame rituals that you do?
- 30:36SPEAKER_02: Um, birthday cake, cake pop from Starbucks.
- 30:40SPEAKER_02: Those are the best.
- 30:41SPEAKER_02: Um, I usually have it a coffee or an awani.
- 30:45SPEAKER_02: And I have like a certain like few songs that I always play.
- 30:49SPEAKER_02: Favorite Halloween candy?
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: Oh, my new favorite one is the Jolly Rancher gummies.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: Those are good.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: I go through bags of those.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: Those are really good.
- 30:59SPEAKER_02: Three things you cannot live without.
- 31:02SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 31:02SPEAKER_02: I'll say my Bible, probably my twin sister.
- 31:08SPEAKER_02: Um and music.
- 31:13SPEAKER_03: The twin sister's in the building right now, so she's probably feeling really special.
- 31:17SPEAKER_03: I would have said it if you weren't here too.
- 31:21SPEAKER_03: Is there one thing on your bucket list that you want to get done before you're through with college?
- 31:27SPEAKER_03: I think.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: I want to take another trip somewhere with some of my teammates.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: Uh, we did that this winter.
- 31:35SPEAKER_02: We went to the Dominican Republic.
- 31:37SPEAKER_02: That was really fun.
- 31:38SPEAKER_02: And now I want to go to like, I want to go somewhere in Europe again.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: Like maybe I would go back to Italy.
- 31:46SPEAKER_02: Or we were talking about Spain.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: Spain would be really pretty.
- 31:49SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 31:50SPEAKER_03: Speaking of kind of like things you've done before, is there a favorite memory that you have so far at UT?
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 31:58SPEAKER_02: This is like really I'm thinking of Halloween stuff right now.
- 32:01SPEAKER_02: Um It's the season.
- 32:02SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah.
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: Just the season.
- 32:03SPEAKER_02: It is the season.
- 32:04SPEAKER_02: Or our assistant coach Gavin, he really likes to, you know, get in spirit and scare all of us.
- 32:09SPEAKER_02: I get scared really easily.
- 32:11SPEAKER_02: So there was one time we were leaving out of our film room and all the lights in the gym were off, and then they started playing like Halloween music on the speakers.
- 32:19SPEAKER_02: He comes out of the dark in like a Halloween mask, and it's on our film cameras.
- 32:24SPEAKER_02: I start sprinting towards the film room to get back inside.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: So I was scared, but it's like a really good memory.
- 32:30SPEAKER_03: But now you're on guard for this year.
- 32:32SPEAKER_03: If it happens again, all the freshmen first.
- 32:35SPEAKER_03: I was like, yeah, no, y'all go ahead.
- 32:37SPEAKER_03: I know how this goes.
- 32:38SPEAKER_03: I love it.
- 32:39SPEAKER_03: Well, you can catch Chelsea and the Ladyballs this Friday.
- 32:43SPEAKER_03: They're on the road against Arkansas.
- 32:45SPEAKER_03: Are y'all gonna make it back in time for the big Alabama game?
- 32:48SPEAKER_03: Probably not.
- 32:49SPEAKER_03: Probably not.
- 32:49SPEAKER_02: No, you've got from the bigger things to do.
- 32:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 32:53SPEAKER_03: Gotta beat those razorbacks.
- 32:54SPEAKER_03: That was Chelsea Sutton, and you can catch her all season long on Tennessee Volleyball.
- 32:59SPEAKER_03: More of the Mike Keith show coming up next.
- 33:01SPEAKER_16: You're one-on-one with Mike Keith, sponsored by Food City, the official supermarket of the Tennessee Volunteers.

- 33:38SPEAKER_07: It moves.
- 33:39SPEAKER_07: In the work that starts before sunrise, in the businesses that keep Tennessee running, and in the people building what comes next.
- 33:48SPEAKER_07: That's the power of natural gas.
- 33:50SPEAKER_07: Reliable, efficient, powering the businesses our communities depend on for a cleaner energy future.
- 33:57SPEAKER_07: Because progress isn't something we wait for, it's something we build.

- 34:16SPEAKER_16: Great companies aren't either.
- 34:18SPEAKER_12: Like the Vols, coaches and players need to learn to handle the pressure, including the pressure of success.
- 34:25SPEAKER_08: We invest in the next generation.
- 34:27SPEAKER_09: We invest in our community.
- 34:28SPEAKER_08: And most importantly, we invest in our employees.
- 34:32SPEAKER_00: Want to change the world?
- 34:33SPEAKER_00: Change it one roof at a time.
- 34:38SPEAKER_11: The balls.
- 34:43SPEAKER_08: Bring on the back of the ball nation.
- 34:48SPEAKER_08: And let the capability of the Ford F-150 bring the rest.
- 35:24SPEAKER_04: Got a lot going on?
- 35:25SPEAKER_04: Let the professional stoppers do the work for you.
- 35:28SPEAKER_04: Just set a pickup time and your groceries will be ready.
- 35:31SPEAKER_04: Try curvedside pickup at Food City today.
- 35:34SPEAKER_21: Sorry, we need to go too.
- 35:39SPEAKER_07: Let's be real for a second.
- 35:41SPEAKER_21: Vaping isn't harmless.
- 35:43SPEAKER_21: Most vapes contain nicotine, and nicotine can lead to addiction, especially while your brain is still developing.
- 35:49SPEAKER_21: And once you're hooked, it's not easy to just stop whenever.
- 35:53SPEAKER_21: You've got goals.
- 35:54SPEAKER_21: Sports, school, friends.
- 35:57SPEAKER_21: A future you're building right now.
- 35:59SPEAKER_21: Don't let a trend decide that for you.
- 36:01SPEAKER_21: Protect your potential.
- 36:03SPEAKER_21: Be TN strong.
- 36:06SPEAKER_04: In Big Orange Country, we live for big moments, but we know there are surprises along the way.

- 37:16SPEAKER_08: An encore presentation of my wide-ranging discussion with University of Tennessee Chancellor Dondi Plow.
- 37:26SPEAKER_08: Campaign underway.
- 37:42SPEAKER_08: But still, to finish that out, this is the push.
- 37:46SPEAKER_08: That's right.
- 37:47SPEAKER_08: Why that number why now?
- 37:49SPEAKER_17: So, first of all, that's the way this business works, advancement.
- 37:52SPEAKER_17: They never announce a number until they feel really good and confident they're gonna get there.
- 37:58SPEAKER_17: If you look at the number, it has to do with the things we're trying to achieve and what's achievable for us.
- 38:04SPEAKER_17: And I'll tell you, if you look at the momentum in our fundraising over the last three years, it's unbelievable.
- 38:10SPEAKER_17: Two years ago, we broke a record of 300 million, never raised that in a single year ever, historically.
- 38:16SPEAKER_17: Last year we broke 400, and this year 580 million.
- 38:20SPEAKER_17: So we're on a roll people are seeing what's happening at Tennessee and they want to be part of it.
- 38:25SPEAKER_08: Why is this university on such a roll that there is that sort of enthusiasm that you could have that kind of goal and feel like it's very attainable?
- 38:35SPEAKER_17: You know, success is contagious, and everyone wants to be part of a winner.
- 38:41SPEAKER_17: Like you want to be part of something that's winning.
- 38:45SPEAKER_17: And we're winning at so many things.
- 38:48SPEAKER_17: And you take something like I can go to any state in the United States, show up with my orange on, and someone will come up to me and say, My daughter's desperately trying to get into the University of Tennessee.
- 39:00SPEAKER_17: Does she have a chance?
- 39:01SPEAKER_17: My grandson applied there.
- 39:03SPEAKER_17: Five of his friends from his school in Northern Virginia want to come there.
- 39:06SPEAKER_17: We're we're recruiting out of Memphis like we've never recruited.
- 39:11SPEAKER_17: We're uh kind of a thing.
- 39:14SPEAKER_17: Uh in the world of enrollment and college admissions.
- 39:20SPEAKER_17: We are a university that's growing.
- 39:22SPEAKER_17: We're a state whose demographic is going to keep we're gonna have a slight decline.
- 39:27SPEAKER_17: States around us are seriously.
- 39:29SPEAKER_17: In 2041, that's the number they're using.
- 39:32SPEAKER_17: This state's age group, that demographic will have grown by 16%.
- 39:37SPEAKER_17: Everyone around us is either in low single digits or negative.
- 39:46SPEAKER_17: But we're we're sort of on fire right now.
- 39:48SPEAKER_17: And I think people see what's happening.
- 39:51SPEAKER_17: I I say this all the time.
- 39:52SPEAKER_17: People ask me, why do you care about athletics so much?
- 39:55SPEAKER_17: Forty over 40 million people viewed us in some supporting event on TV last year.
- 40:02SPEAKER_17: Look at that.
- 40:05SPEAKER_17: And there's a recent article that was out.
- 40:07SPEAKER_17: I can't remember what I think it might have been USA today, one of the big newspapers about another one about the movement.
- 40:14SPEAKER_17: Parents want a student experience.
- 40:17SPEAKER_17: They want an academic program, they want a major that leads to a job, but they want an experience for their for their children.
- 40:24SPEAKER_17: They want to come somewhere that has big athletics, they want to come somewhere where my kids can grow up and engage and belong and healthy things.
- 40:32SPEAKER_17: If you think about it, we we now have this tradition called Tennessee Saturday night, which is the first Saturday night they ever hear before classes right.
- 40:40SPEAKER_17: We had 10,000 kids in the 10,000 kids playing the most wholesome games and throwing access and something you know one another, getting to know one another.
- 41:02SPEAKER_17: Is that really not true?
- 41:04SPEAKER_08: That's Chancellor Dondi Ploughman.
- 41:07SPEAKER_08: The big interview on the Mike Keith Show this Friday.
- 41:11SPEAKER_08: We continue with more of this edition of the Mike Keith Show right after this.
- 41:16SPEAKER_11: Getting you ready for the game, the Mike Keith Show, delivered by Uber Eats.
- 41:21SPEAKER_10: This is your Vol Network.
- 41:28SPEAKER_08: First Horizon Bank presents Andy Asks.
- 41:33SPEAKER_08: Your opportunity to ask your questions through the Vol Network text line through the Vol Networks, Andy Brock.
- 41:41SPEAKER_08: Welcome, Andy.
- 41:42SPEAKER_08: It's great to be here, as always.
- 41:43SPEAKER_08: Let's repeat the VOL Network text line number 865-657-1278.
- 41:50SPEAKER_08: Just text in your questions and Andy will ask.
- 41:55SPEAKER_13: Last week, Tanya from Nashville was watching the game.
- 41:58SPEAKER_13: She noticed obviously Deshaun Bishop played great again.
- 42:01SPEAKER_13: Again.
- 42:02SPEAKER_13: But she loves seeing Desan Brahm and what he was able to do, some explosive plays, and obviously the touchdown run.
- 42:07SPEAKER_13: Is uh he's going to be more involved in the offense?
- 42:10SPEAKER_13: He has been involved, but obviously put a lot of people on notice on Saturday.
- 42:14SPEAKER_13: How more Desan Brahm will we see going forward?
- 42:17SPEAKER_13: I think a lot.
- 42:18SPEAKER_08: I I think Desan Brahm has given himself a chance, Andy, because he's become such a good blocker.
- 42:24SPEAKER_08: And then all of a sudden, you can play the inline tight end, you can pay play that H back.
- 42:31SPEAKER_08: He can certainly play wide receiver at times because he is such a good athlete and can really run.
- 42:38SPEAKER_08: So all of a sudden you've taken the quote unquote big wide receiver tight end, and now he's a real tight end, but he can also play in all of the spots that he could before.
- 42:51SPEAKER_08: I I think you're gonna see a lot of design brain the rest of the year.
- 42:54SPEAKER_08: Okay, Byron from Morristown.
- 42:55SPEAKER_08: Byron from Morristown.
- 42:57SPEAKER_13: Noticing uh that our roster has some incredible talent from the end state.
- 43:02SPEAKER_13: Speak to he wants to speak to the talent of uh what Tennessee high school football has right now to be able to produce the talent that we're seeing on the field.
- 43:11SPEAKER_13: Because when was the last time that center from Tennessee, quarterback from Tennessee, running back from Tennessee, Nick Moore, George McIntyre, Deshaun Bishop?
- 43:19SPEAKER_08: Uh John Fisher was a good center from Milan, he played with Andy Kelly from Dayton.
- 43:24SPEAKER_08: I don't know that there was a Tennessee tailback uh in the mix with those guys.
- 43:30SPEAKER_08: You have to probably go back to Tom Johnson and uh Jim Maxwell and Kurt Watson in 1971.
- 43:37SPEAKER_08: Wow.
- 43:37SPEAKER_08: But I mean if you looked at at one point out there, you had Jesse Perry from Murphy's Borough, Nick Moore from Talbot, you had um Rodarius Jackson from Memphis, you had um George McIntyre from Franklin, and then you had Deshaun Bishop from Knoxville.
- 44:00SPEAKER_08: Or Dewan Morris, who is probably claimed by Chattanooga and Murphy's borough, kind of made you proud.
- 44:07SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 44:08SPEAKER_08: And Tennessee has historically had to recruit regionally and nationally.
- 44:13SPEAKER_08: That started with General Nealan.
- 44:15SPEAKER_08: A lot of people think he won with all Tennessee boys.
- 44:19SPEAKER_08: He absolutely did not.
- 44:21SPEAKER_08: He went regionally and got players and then went nationally and got players because he had all of his army connections and guys sent him players.
- 44:30SPEAKER_08: And then as he grew the program, he sent coaches out to coach high school in different places who had played for him and they would send him players.
- 44:41SPEAKER_08: So it's always been the case.
- 44:42SPEAKER_08: The state's hard to recruit because the population is very spread out.
- 44:48SPEAKER_08: And there just been pockets that have been really, really top level produced top level players, and then occasionally the small places would produce a player.
- 44:58SPEAKER_13: So Daniel from Seymour.
- 44:59SPEAKER_13: Daniel from Seymour.
- 45:00SPEAKER_13: Halfway, just about halfway through the season, it feels like at this point.
- 45:03SPEAKER_13: Or halfway through.
- 45:04SPEAKER_13: He said, Mike, he syncs up the TV every Saturday with the Fall Radio Network.
- 45:08SPEAKER_13: That's nice.
- 45:08SPEAKER_13: That's awesome.
- 45:09SPEAKER_13: Just so we can listen to you and Swain.
- 45:11SPEAKER_13: Thank you.
- 45:12SPEAKER_13: Loves your energy and passion calling the games.
- 45:14SPEAKER_13: Is there something or someone that has inspired your play-by-play style or something that you know inspires you every time you step in the booth that you want to emulate in some way?
- 45:24SPEAKER_13: I know you want to be unique and have that always.
- 45:27SPEAKER_08: I don't think that, you know, uh it's no secret that I grew up with John Ward and I grew up in the business with John Ward, but I've taken a lot of things from different people because I just really like broadcasting.
- 45:38SPEAKER_08: And I think you just come to a point where you decide what's important to call in a game and how you call it.
- 45:47SPEAKER_08: Um I like to stay real focused on what's happening on the field.
- 45:53SPEAKER_08: I like to talk about the personnel switches.
- 45:55SPEAKER_08: I like to let people know who's on the field in certain instances.
- 46:00SPEAKER_08: Um I see my job as kind of being a PA announcer on the radio and to let my color commentator do more of the breakdown.
- 46:10SPEAKER_08: And I think Jason Swain has just been fantastic.
- 46:15SPEAKER_08: I've been blown away by Jason Swain, and I've been blown away by Bill Mayo taking Jason Swain's place in the number two analyst chair.
- 46:24SPEAKER_08: I so love the pregame show that Brunt Hubs, Jason Swain, and Bill Mayo do because man, it is serious ball.
- 46:32SPEAKER_08: It's like this Saturday, you need to tune in at one Eastern, 12 Central and listen to that because on Saturday, I want ball.
- 46:41SPEAKER_08: I like the stories through the week.
- 46:43SPEAKER_08: I like all the color and the pageantry, but man, get me to Saturday.
- 46:47SPEAKER_08: I need to know how Tennessee is going to beat Alabama.
- 46:50SPEAKER_08: And that's what they're talking about on that show.
- 46:53SPEAKER_08: So I try to put that in the hands of the people who really know it.
- 46:57SPEAKER_13: He wants to know also how do you keep your vocal cords in shape, especially when saying the SAT call as many times as we have this year.
- 47:04SPEAKER_13: It's been good.
- 47:04SPEAKER_13: It's been a lot, but it's good.
- 47:05SPEAKER_13: That's what you want to do.
- 47:13SPEAKER_13: But is there like anything that you do to maybe rest throughout the week, especially when you have this many games in a week?
- 47:18SPEAKER_08: Yeah, you just don't.
- 47:19SPEAKER_08: I mean, and we got basketball starting to overlay too.
- 47:22SPEAKER_08: So I mean, you just, you know, you just rest it.
- 47:25SPEAKER_08: You drink a lot of water, you drink a lot of hot tea.
- 47:28SPEAKER_08: Um, there's some things you don't eat because they mess with your vocal cords.
- 47:35SPEAKER_08: Speaking of hoops.
- 47:36SPEAKER_08: Yes.
- 47:36SPEAKER_13: Basketball's back.
- 47:37SPEAKER_13: Basketball's back tomorrow.
- 47:39SPEAKER_13: Basketball's back.
- 47:40SPEAKER_13: Fun exhibition with Xavier and then Duke next week.
- 47:42SPEAKER_13: Cameron indoor.
- 47:43SPEAKER_13: Going to Duke.
- 47:44SPEAKER_13: What is the most exciting aspect about hoops being back and it being Alabama Saturday and then Duke on Tuesday?
- 47:52SPEAKER_13: How how cool is that to do two fantastic opponents?
- 47:55SPEAKER_08: I can't describe it.
- 47:57SPEAKER_08: I can't describe how excited I am for the weekend.
- 48:00SPEAKER_08: I mean, you're you're honored to call Tennessee Alabama.
- 48:05SPEAKER_08: You're just honored.
- 48:06SPEAKER_08: I mean, that that is what that game is all about.
- 48:10SPEAKER_08: It's there's a specialness.
- 48:12SPEAKER_08: You have to respect what they are and what they've done.
- 48:15SPEAKER_08: You have to tip your hat.
- 48:17SPEAKER_08: I mean, the same way you have to respect Kentuckian basketball, you could say you don't.
- 48:22SPEAKER_08: You know, you can be one of those people, well, I hate so and so.
- 48:25SPEAKER_08: It's like, okay, well, that's fine, but you still have to respect what they do.
- 48:29SPEAKER_08: And understanding that they know who you are and they respect you too, whether they want to or not, is part of it.
- 48:38SPEAKER_08: And if you win this football game, you have done something significant because a lot of Tennessee fans base their memories of a certain football season on did we beat Alabama?
- 48:53SPEAKER_08: The 1982 team only won six games, lost to Vanderbilt, six, five, and one.
- 48:59SPEAKER_08: But they beat Alabama.
- 49:01SPEAKER_08: They broke the 12-game, the 12-year streak against Alabama.
- 49:06SPEAKER_08: Is that year a success?
- 49:08SPEAKER_08: I think if you were there in 1982, you would say it was.
- 49:11SPEAKER_08: It's just that kind of game.
- 49:13SPEAKER_08: And then getting to go call a game at Cameron, a hallowed hall in basketball terms, fantastic.
- 49:23SPEAKER_08: I mean, when you walk in those venues and you understand who's been there, and you get to call a game.
- 49:30SPEAKER_08: You know, just attending a game at those places is special, but you get to call a game in these places and you understand these voices who've been there, and you you just think to yourself, wow, how lucky am I?
- 49:42SPEAKER_08: And I get how fortunate we are, and I think you try to live up to that with how you prepare and how you're how you're ready for all of it.
- 49:51SPEAKER_13: I think everyone's gonna have a moment like that on Saturday.
- 49:53SPEAKER_13: Sure, for sure.
- 49:55SPEAKER_13: Absolutely.
- 49:55SPEAKER_08: Seeing the jerseys that way and the colors.
- 49:57SPEAKER_08: You know, but here I'm like you in this way.
- 50:00SPEAKER_08: I've never seen it.
- 50:01SPEAKER_13: Yeah.
- 50:02SPEAKER_13: It's new for a lot of people.
- 50:03SPEAKER_08: It's new.
- 50:03SPEAKER_08: I mean, it's new, it's 56 years.
- 50:05SPEAKER_13: Yeah.
- 50:06SPEAKER_08: And so I I'm looking forward to the first time the two the kickers run out.
- 50:10SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 50:10SPEAKER_08: The first kickoff.
- 50:11SPEAKER_08: Yeah, but I'm talking about just warm-ups.
- 50:13SPEAKER_13: Oh, yeah.
- 50:14SPEAKER_08: And just seeing the there's, you know, crimson on this side, and there's orange on this side, and it's a it's a throwback to some some good games and a good era, and it's it's why we love college football.
- 50:26SPEAKER_08: And I think you have to appreciate every Saturday in that way.
- 50:29SPEAKER_13: Got one more.
- 50:29SPEAKER_13: All right.
- 50:30SPEAKER_13: Uh, speaking on the game on Saturday, you speaking.
- 50:32SPEAKER_13: Already mentioned some of the excitements around the game and the atmosphere.
- 50:34SPEAKER_13: Is there anything from like a broadcast standpoint you're excited about for Saturday?
- 50:38SPEAKER_13: Anything extra?
- 50:39SPEAKER_13: There's so much with this game.
- 50:40SPEAKER_13: What's what's something that you don't want people to miss about this Tennessee Alabama game that we haven't spoken about yet?
- 50:47SPEAKER_08: I just here here's what I think about this.
- 50:51SPEAKER_08: There was a guy in 1982 named Mike Terry.
- 50:56SPEAKER_08: Mike Terry was an undersized outside linebacker from Atlanta.
- 51:02SPEAKER_08: And at the end of the game, Tennessee was not great on defense.
- 51:07SPEAKER_08: Didn't have a lot of players, had some players hurt.
- 51:10SPEAKER_08: At the end of the game, Walter Lewis throws into the end zone, and the ball is batted up in the air, and Mike Terry intercepts it.
- 51:19SPEAKER_08: You know Mike Terry's name for the rest of your life because he brought in the interception that sealed a win over Alabama.
- 51:32SPEAKER_08: Chuck Coleman, Johnny Jones, Hendon Hooker, uh, you know, Hyatt.
- 51:38SPEAKER_08: I I mean you've got to be.
- 51:40SPEAKER_08: Will Brooks from Will Brooks two years ago, yeah.
- 51:42SPEAKER_08: Yeah, Will Brooks will always Chase McGrath.
- 51:44SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 51:45SPEAKER_08: I I mean somebody gets to write their name in a book for the rest of their life because of this game.
- 51:54SPEAKER_08: Yep.
- 51:54SPEAKER_08: Andy asks, brought to you by First Horizon Bank, official bank of the balls.
- 52:01SPEAKER_08: And they got the jersey patch really sharp.
- 52:03SPEAKER_08: Yeah.
- 52:03SPEAKER_08: Looks good.
- 52:04SPEAKER_08: Looks good.
- 52:05SPEAKER_08: We get to see it uh this weekend as Tennessee takes on Alabama.
- 52:09SPEAKER_08: For Andy Brock and our Fine Ball Network staff, I'm Mike Keith.
- 52:12SPEAKER_08: Thanks for watching, and we'll see you next time.
- 52:17SPEAKER_11: All the week long to the latest from the Tennessee campus, Mike Keith Go online, delivered by Uber East, WT Sports WWE Network.
