- 0:06All right, hello and welcome to "Hangin' Out with
- 0:08Bob," a podcast hosted by me, Bob Edholm. Thanks
- 0:14for joining and let's get started. "Hangin' Out
- 0:19with Bob" is a podcast where guests tell us their
- 0:21stories, where they grew up, what they're doing
- 0:23now, which shows they stream, which books they
- 0:26read, which teams they cheer for, and yada, yada,
- 0:29yada. And the more laughs we can have telling
- 0:31stories and hanging out together, the better.
- 0:35That said, let me introduce my two guests today.
- 0:40Maybe I should call this episode "All in the Family,"
- 0:42because these two guys just happen to be my brothers,
- 0:45Dave Edholm and Tom Edholm. Same last name,
- 0:52same parents. And all three of us are Boomers.
- 0:54Boomers with Millennials for kids and Generation
- 0:57Alphas for grandkids. Thanks for being here,
- 0:59guys. Appreciate it. Can't think of a better
- 1:01way to begin my broadcast than with my two brothers
- 1:03as guests. So for the next few minutes, we're
- 1:05just going to be telling each other a little
- 1:07bit about ourselves. I'll go first, and I promise
- 1:10none of us will go for more than two minutes.
- 1:16So let us know if we're getting long in the tooth.
- 1:19Again, my name is Bob Edholm. I'm a Boomer.
- 1:23Like I said, I turned 71 in April. Whoa. I live
- 1:26in Columbia Heights, Minnesota, which is also
- 1:27where my brothers and I grew up, I was born
- 1:30in Minneapolis, but then when we were nine years
- 1:32old, we moved up to Columbia Heights, and that's
- 1:34where I ended up going to school and you know
- 1:37went to a Highland Elementary and then Columbia
- 1:39Junior High School and then Columbia Heights
- 1:41Senior High School and then afterward we went
- 1:44to college, went to Anoka-Ramsey for a couple
- 1:46years, and then we also went to the University
- 1:49of Minnesota where I graduated with a degree
- 1:51in journalism. I worked on a newspaper for three
- 1:55years after college and then I came back to the
- 1:57Twin Cities and got a job in communications and
- 2:01public relations for about 16 years and then
- 2:04stayed in insurance at that company as Prudential
- 2:06for 24 years total. I started over a few times
- 2:12in different jobs and then I got a job with the
- 2:15Voya Financial Insurance Company. I was there
- 2:16for almost 10 years and I was there till just
- 2:18this past April. My job was eliminated. So right
- 2:23now, I'm just getting into the podcast thing
- 2:26that was recommended by a few people to try that.
- 2:29And if I can find work as a proofreader, I'll
- 2:31do that as well. But I'm enjoying retirement,
- 2:33so to speak, and doing a lot of reading and streaming
- 2:37and spending time with my daughter and son -in
- 2:40-law and granddaughter and my brothers. Okay,
- 2:46Dave, you can go next. And we've got a quick
- 2:49joke for you. What do you call a monk with a
- 2:51podcast? An "air friar." Thank you very much. Go
- 2:58ahead, Dave. And with that, anyway, so I'm Dave.
- 3:03Yeah, Bob and Tom are my brothers from the Heights,
- 3:06from northeast Minneapolis. Actually, that's
- 3:09where I lived my first seven years. Yeah, fond
- 3:13memories of growing up when I did. Obviously
- 3:16I'm a boomer as well. I taught for 42 years.
- 3:21Have a family, have lots of kids. Still very
- 3:25busy with them. Still actually sub -teaching
- 3:28on occasion and currently just staying real busy
- 3:33with like remodeled stuff and so forth. Yeah,
- 3:36what you've been working on this year? Just...
- 3:38Kind of, I'm doing a bathroom, doing a whole
- 3:43bunch of landscaping. So, but obviously I don't
- 3:48recover like I used to, so the projects are taking
- 3:51considerably longer. But yeah, looking forward
- 3:54to doing this and talking about some of the old
- 3:56days growing up in Heights. Good for now? Okay,
- 4:03good. And Tom, here's another bad joke. Why don't
- 4:06boomers like to use AC or DC? They hate anything that
- 4:09is current. Wrong one. Okay. All right, and Tom,
- 4:22you take it away. You get you get two minutes,
- 4:24two-minute warning with no timeouts. Well, I'm
- 4:26Tom, and I'm the younger and better-looking of
- 4:29the three brothers. But yeah, same background,
- 4:33same schools and everything. As my brothers mentioned
- 4:37before, I grew up in the Heights until I was
- 4:41about 22 or 24, actually. And then I moved out
- 4:45to the northwest subarbs and have been there ever since.
- 4:48I spent 38 years in the heating and air conditioning
- 4:51business. This is a contract versus a contractor
- 4:58the last 15 years as on the sales side, distribution
- 5:02sales after I got too beat up to do the work
- 5:04anymore. I have, as Bob mentioned, I have some
- 5:09kids in their 30s and a bunch of grandkids and...
- 5:14Just still do a lot of work around the house
- 5:17and we do a lot more traveling now. Love Florida
- 5:22and we've been all over the place the last few
- 5:25years so we enjoy doing that and look forward
- 5:28to doing more. I still have a few years left
- 5:30before I retire. But we're empty nesters now.
- 5:35We've always had dogs and we... we started taking
- 5:41in rescue dogs a few years ago. So we're we enjoy
- 5:44that. That's the challenge, obviously, but but
- 5:46yeah, have a good time with that. And yeah, looking
- 5:49forward to looking forward to talking about the
- 5:51old hood. We just drove through it on the way
- 5:57here, actually. So just to clarify time, did
- 5:59you indicate which suburb you're in? No, I didn't.
- 6:02Okay. I'm in the northwest suburb. No, I'm up
- 6:05in the Anoka area. Okay. Okay. And then Dave's
- 6:07also in there. Andover and Ramsey. Okay, again,
- 6:12the name of this podcast is "Hangin' Out with
- 6:14Bob." I'm your host, Bob Edholm. And my two guests
- 6:16are my brothers, Dave and Tom Edholm. And now
- 6:22that you've heard a little bit about us, the
- 6:24three of us, we're all going to talk a little
- 6:27bit about the house where we grew up in in Columbia
- 6:29Heights. It was on a street called Chatham Road.
- 6:34Just arbitrarily, Tom, I'm gonna ask you first.
- 6:36Just kind of tell us about the house as you remember
- 6:38it, on Chatham. Well, a lot of fine memories
- 6:41of that place. It was a small house, but I, you
- 6:46know, I... still marvel at the fact that the
- 6:49three of us shared a bedroom that was about eight
- 6:52by 10. It was just a your typical late 50s rambler
- 6:58track home detached garage. Yep. We had an unfinished
- 7:02basement for years and years. And like I said,
- 7:06it's flooded every time it rains. So there wasn't
- 7:11much we could do with that. But yeah, it was
- 7:14it was small. One thing I do miss about it is
- 7:19the house I have now, I mow about an acre and
- 7:22that lawn I could mow in about three and a half
- 7:25minutes. You know, it's just a postage stamp
- 7:27compared to what I've had my whole adult life.
- 7:31But no, it was awesome. The only thing that was
- 7:35funnier than the three of us sharing that bedroom
- 7:37was the fact that we'd all eat around all five
- 7:39of us a kitchen table and even a smaller area.
- 7:44Yeah, it was it was crazy. You know, different
- 7:47times now. And it was nice having a neighbor
- 7:50literally eight feet from you on each side. You
- 7:52know, you hear their arguments and stuff. Yeah,
- 7:59a lot of fun memories in that house, obviously.
- 8:03Spent most of my life there, right? For 20 years
- 8:06of my life, I stayed in that house. Right, you
- 8:08never did live in Minneapolis. Dave and I, we
- 8:10were northeast to when we were little boys. I
- 8:13was nine and Dave was seven when we moved up
- 8:15the Heights. Yeah, you did everything in the
- 8:17Heights. You even got married in the Heights.
- 8:19Yeah, well, my wife's from the Heights, so. Okay,
- 8:27go ahead, Dave. One thing I remember about that
- 8:30house, you know, I was just talking to some people
- 8:32from Heights who I golfed with this last week,
- 8:35but I thought this was always pretty funny. None
- 8:37of us had air conditioning. And at least I think
- 8:45my parents may have gotten air conditioning when
- 8:47I was like 20. And when I would go over there,
- 8:54I thought it just felt great. So we were talking
- 8:59about the fact that if there was a heat wave,
- 9:04what would end up happening usually is that you
- 9:07wouldn't sleep for like three nights, even as
- 9:10a kid. And you'd be like just super exhausted.
- 9:14You'd wake up and just sweat like a pig. And
- 9:22so you'd go about three or four nights without
- 9:24sleeping but then about the fifth night you'd
- 9:26be so exhausted and kind of used to it that you'd
- 9:29actually fall asleep but by that time the heat
- 9:31wave had actually broken so it started to get
- 9:34cooler again. The other thing that I'll never
- 9:36forget about that house is that we lived on Chatham
- 9:39and there was a time when there wasn't a stop
- 9:42sign on Chatham. They put a stop sign on Golf
- 9:45Place in Chatham which is I want to say probably
- 9:48about a couple hundred yards, maybe an eighth
- 9:51of a mile from Fairway Drive. And what would
- 9:54happen, because you'd have to have the windows
- 9:56open in the summertime, what would always happen
- 9:59is that guys who were older than us who had hot
- 10:03rods would take a right on Fairway and they would
- 10:07literally drag race. Going on Chatham Road and
- 10:15I mean you absolutely could hear it It was impossible
- 10:18not to because all the windows in the house were
- 10:20open but and then eventually they ended up putting
- 10:23the stops on I think that that Helped it cut
- 10:26yet it cut down considerably on the number of
- 10:30drag races But I can't imagine what would have
- 10:32happened to those cars when they would have been
- 10:33going up that hill after Golf Place, because
- 10:41there was a slight incline, it wouldn't surprise
- 10:43me if some of those cars probably got air, because
- 10:46they would really wind it up. I'll share a couple
- 10:52things about the house, too. Actually, this is
- 10:55before you were born, Tom, just before you were
- 10:57born, but that house did not have a garage. It
- 10:59had a gravel driveway, and it was just a three
- 11:03-bedroom rambler. I remember I think it was painted
- 11:06green with, you know, white trim. Shakes. Yeah,
- 11:10shakes. Yeah, shakes. Yeah. And yeah, obviously
- 11:12no air conditioning until I was like 21 or so
- 11:17before I put that in the base in the house, which
- 11:19was great. But I can remember. Do you remember
- 11:21we had no fences? You were talking about the
- 11:26no fence. Right, and we could burn trash. Yes.
- 11:30And I can remember, I remember one time, I don't
- 11:32know if it happened more than once, but I remember
- 11:34one time where, you know, I can remember dad
- 11:36telling us never to put aerosol cans in the,
- 11:39you know, like a right guard deodorant, spray
- 11:41deodorant. I remember I accidentally emptied
- 11:44out the trash and put it in, it was burning.
- 11:46And I go, dad, I think, uh, There's an aerosol
- 11:48can in there. He took that really well. And he
- 11:51says, get away from that trash burner. And we
- 11:54were by the house. And about 10 minutes after
- 11:57the fire was going on, I was sitting here to
- 11:58boom. And then it did pop. It wasn't going to
- 12:02tear. Did we throw a cherry bomb in there? No,
- 12:05I think that there were some people behind us
- 12:08that had cherry bombs. And we thought it'd be
- 12:11kind of cool to see what would happen. And I
- 12:14think we put the lid on after we threw the cherry.
- 12:17bomb in and it soon ignited and I don't know
- 12:19if it blew the lid off but it was it was created
- 12:22quite a ruckus. Oh, that's funny. But I remember
- 12:28that house and I remember it was, it was, it
- 12:30was, Chatham Road was a busy street in our neighborhood
- 12:32or in Columbia Heights because a lot of times
- 12:34kids that would drive to high school would go
- 12:36up Chatham Road. It was kind of a main drag.
- 12:38I got a lot of traffic, so a lot of people would
- 12:41end up going by our house that we knew from school
- 12:43or whatever. Well, it was a shortcut for people
- 12:47to get to Apache, too. Oh, yeah. Apache Plaza
- 12:49was a shopping mall not far from my house. It
- 12:51was very, very popular. Exactly. And Silver Lake.
- 12:57Okay, well, I'm going to go on to the next topic
- 13:04now guys. We talked about the house we grew up
- 13:06in, but let's just leave the house in the yard
- 13:09for a little bit and just talk about our neighborhood
- 13:12where we actually live, that part of Columbia
- 13:14Heights. I was going to start with the fact that
- 13:17our whole neighborhood there, you know, for blocks
- 13:20and blocks, was once a golf course. It was called
- 13:25Hilltop Golf Course. It was gone before any of
- 13:27us were born. I think it was there till about
- 13:30the mid -40s. But it was an 18 -hole golf course,
- 13:32and it had 18 holes. And I've shared with my
- 13:36brothers just some maps of the course, hand -drawn
- 13:39maps. It kind of shows how the course is laid
- 13:42out. And it went as far west as almost like where
- 13:45the high school was, and up to kind of the neighborhood
- 13:49known as Innsbruck, all the way to Stinson Boulevard,
- 13:52where the seminary. was in it so it took up a
- 13:54lot of area and I've often wondered but what
- 13:56how cool that would have been if you could somehow
- 13:58walk those 18 holes right you know I've heard
- 14:01it said that our house we were kind of at the
- 14:03bottom of Chatham Road or level part that was
- 14:07like a green to a hole or something you know
- 14:09the first hole it was it was it was close to
- 14:13the clubhouse but that was it was a It was right
- 14:16down the fairway or a hole where we were. So,
- 14:20do you guys have any other? Well, speaking of
- 14:22the clubhouse, the clubhouse was actually on
- 14:2445th. Yes. In Chatham. Yes, still there. And
- 14:27several families that we knew, at least a couple
- 14:30of families that we knew fairly well, because
- 14:32the Philippi's lived there for a time. Yep.
- 14:35And the Lahti's lived there for quite a while
- 14:39as well. So, that was actually the old clubhouse,
- 14:43right? It would be the... northeast corner of
- 14:4645th and Chatham. I don't believe our dad ever
- 14:52played that course either because I know he played
- 14:54like Columbia and Gross I think when he was growing
- 14:56up but I would have just loved to talk to somebody
- 14:58that I remember. Doug Latawiec told us his dad,
- 15:02Chet, who was a golfer really enjoyed golfing.
- 15:05I think he caddied or played that course. Fore!
- 15:10Well, anything you have to remember, like that
- 15:11course has been gone for like eighty years. Yeah.
- 15:14I mean, so anybody that had played it would be,
- 15:17you know, a hundred or more now, so there's no...
- 15:19There was a developer who developed all the land.
- 15:22Wasn't his name Jessup? He was the guy that built
- 15:24our house. Yeah, there was about 10 or 11 houses
- 15:27on our street. I think he built, well, the floor
- 15:30plan, I think, was the same for half the houses
- 15:33on the block. Well, all the ramblers had essentially
- 15:35the same layout. There were a couple of one and
- 15:37a half stories, weren't there? Yeah, and those
- 15:39were built earlier. Grant's house was, I think,
- 15:47one of them. Yeah, right. Ours was, I think,
- 15:50the first one, or at least at that end. And then
- 15:53the second or third house from the corner also
- 15:56had that same, they all had that same look to
- 15:58it. Yeah, they were identical. But let's talk
- 16:03about some other memories that you guys can think
- 16:04of. I mean, there was that park. Yeah. It was
- 16:07a huge part of growing up there. That's where
- 16:14everybody hung out. It was a great place to take
- 16:17your bike and jumps and wipe out. And you didn't
- 16:22have far to go home crying after that. But remember
- 16:27the baseball games down there? Sandlot baseball?
- 16:32It's disappeared. It doesn't exist anymore. I
- 16:34don't see anybody using it. There was no hockey
- 16:36rink, but in the winter you get the skaters.
- 16:41It would be packed. Do you guys remember that
- 16:50it would be east of Hilltop Park? So that would
- 16:54be Upland Crest. But one of the families, it
- 16:58was a very steep hill. I mean, really steep and
- 17:01they had they tried to grow lawns on that hill,
- 17:04but there was a I remember one time we were up
- 17:06there playing baseball and there was a guy who
- 17:09had his lawnmower on a rope. And he was like
- 17:15he was gently letting the lawnmower down down
- 17:19down the rope and then he pull it back up. But.
- 17:25Anyway, yeah, just to give you some indication,
- 17:28the other thing that I remember is that there
- 17:30was a path where there wasn't, there weren't
- 17:33any homes, and that path ran from up on that
- 17:38little hill on Chatham all the way up to the
- 17:41water tower. That was obviously some kind of
- 17:43a water main. Well they had pipes, there were
- 17:45these giant pipes. They had these gigantic pipes,
- 17:48and that was the place where I swear that...
- 17:51John Ellison probably saved my life there because
- 17:54we'd get these pipes that weighed like several
- 17:57tons and because it was hilly you could you could
- 18:00push them down a hill and I thought it was I
- 18:03thought it would be kind of fun to just kind
- 18:05of jump jump on the pipe as it was rolling and
- 18:08luckily he grabbed me by the belt because I think
- 18:11if I would have gone over that pipe I just would
- 18:13have been crushed but anyway but yeah and then
- 18:18over where Roddy's lived that was an opening
- 18:21there, but that went all the way to the water
- 18:24tower, which was the coolest water tower ever,
- 18:27because you could bang rocks off of it. The old
- 18:29one. It almost sounded like bullets. It did,
- 18:33yes. The rock would hit it. And you knew you
- 18:40could really throw it. throw a ball far if you
- 18:43could throw a rock on top of that water tower.
- 18:46I couldn't tell you what year I could finally
- 18:48do that, but that was always the goal. Do you
- 18:52remember that hill, speaking of that hill? I
- 18:54can remember for a couple of winters, at least
- 18:56when the skating rink was open, they turned it
- 18:59into kind of almost like a ski track. They got
- 19:02the snow to harden and guys would go up on their
- 19:05skates up that hill and then to ski down the
- 19:08hill on their skates. And I remember one time
- 19:11our Uncle Joe did that. I don't remember that.
- 19:13He came skating with us up at the rink. Yeah.
- 19:16And then he went over with all the teenagers
- 19:18and they were going down the hill. You know,
- 19:20if I did, I'd always wipe out or something. because
- 19:23it was one of those things where it was kind
- 19:24of a daredevil thing. Yes, yeah. The other thing
- 19:27that you can't forget about that skating rink
- 19:29is that first of all, the bullies. I mean, there
- 19:33were bullies like everywhere and it was absolutely
- 19:36commonplace to just get your head just stuffed
- 19:39into a snowbank for no apparent reason at all,
- 19:43but you just kind of shook it off and that's
- 19:47just kind of what you did. And the other thing
- 19:48too is that there were a lot of kids that were
- 19:50smoking when they were about eight. Oh yeah.
- 19:52If you weren't playing pull away, you were smoking
- 19:55until Clayton came out and chewed you away. And
- 19:59then while he was out shooting you away, you
- 20:01go and steal candy out of his little office there.
- 20:05I can still smell that. Tom Moore soda. Yeah, they
- 20:09had the old pop machines. And then it was before
- 20:13our time, even before we even moved up there.
- 20:15But I remember mom telling us that our grandpa
- 20:18was one of those warming house guys. Right. He
- 20:20was yelling at the kids all the time. But this
- 20:22was like in the 50s or, you know. and there was
- 20:25some dude named Ambrose who had a very strong
- 20:28either northeast or Polish accent and he kept
- 20:31he'd always tell people to close the door closed
- 20:34the door yeah because if he kept it open he was
- 20:37he had a chair right by that door and it's freezing
- 20:39out you know it's like close zero and he'd be
- 20:42wondering about that so yeah good memories oh
- 20:44and one last place i'm going to bring up and
- 20:46and Tom he probably spent that time there too
- 20:48because it was still open was the area we called
- 20:51the "Tabletop" right across the street from over
- 20:53the water tower It was great for toboggans. It
- 20:56was great. And then in the summertime, it was
- 20:59taken over by motorcycles. I mean, there were
- 21:08just guys that were going up that hill because
- 21:10it was laid out perfectly. It was very steep.
- 21:13It's like a plateau on top that you could take
- 21:14these steep hills up and it got a lot of use.
- 21:17So the "Tabletop," I just remember calling it.
- 21:20Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Good memories. Okay. Again,
- 21:23the name of this podcast is "Hangin' Out with
- 21:24Bob." I'm your host, Bob Edholm. And I'm with
- 21:26my two guests and my brothers, Dave and Tom Edholm
- 21:28And the last topic I want to bring up,
- 21:35um, I think it's be kind of fun. Well, we're
- 21:37all Boomers. Um, Dave and I are pretty close
- 21:41in age. I'm 71 and Dave will be 70 in November.
- 21:44Whoa. Uh, but Tom was, he's a, he's a younger,
- 21:47he's a BABY Baby Boomer. He was born in 62.
- 21:50Whoa. So there's nine and a half years between
- 21:52him and I. So we might have different favorite
- 21:54memories of growing up, or favorite things, I
- 21:57guess. What I wanted to ask, and we don't have
- 21:59to go in order, we can just bring up stuff like
- 22:01favorite places to hang out, favorite teams,
- 22:05favorite bands, favorite TV shows, radio stations,
- 22:09the kinds of things that we remember while we
- 22:11were growing up. I think you might have mentioned
- 22:14already, Dave, or Tom did, Apache Plaza was a
- 22:17real popular place for kids. It was in an area
- 22:20where you had kids from Heights, Northeast Minneapolis,
- 22:24St. Anthony, New Brighton, so you'd see a lot
- 22:26of kids there on weekends. It was a good place
- 22:28to go and see people and you could just, you
- 22:30know, walk around and try to stay out of trouble,
- 22:32I guess. It was always fun to have special events
- 22:35there like trailers, you know, you could hitch
- 22:38your cars and people would go in there and sit
- 22:40down inside those trailers and people would kick
- 22:42you out until you get lost and have special events.
- 22:45But that's one place I thought of, Apache was
- 22:48a great place. There weren't places in Heights
- 22:51that I remember specifically hanging out until
- 22:53I got older. Like, McDonald's was fun, but I
- 22:57didn't really drive until I was in high school.
- 22:59So it's not, you just, I needed to walk there
- 23:00and hang out, but. And Chatham Road, cause we
- 23:03ended up going to Columbia. It seemed like, I
- 23:05don't know, you know, we lived a long distance
- 23:08from any place on, like, Central, you know, which
- 23:11was obviously. I think a lot of kids hung out
- 23:14at places on Central, but we were a long distance
- 23:16from there. Apache was probably even closer.
- 23:21Yep. Yeah, Apache and Silver Lake Beach, obviously,
- 23:24was, at least when I was growing up, was real
- 23:26popular. I think the beach got more, you know,
- 23:28the beach wasn't always open when we were kids.
- 23:31I don't think it became a beach till I was like
- 23:33about a freshman in high school in 1968 or something.
- 23:37It wasn't, but once the public beach was there, then
- 23:39it got pretty popular. How about, what do you
- 23:41remember for TV shows. What were the shows you
- 23:44remember growing up looking forward to? Because
- 23:46we didn't have cable. We couldn't stream shows.
- 23:49We had to watch them when they were on or we
- 23:51didn't see them. What were things that must see?
- 23:53What popped into my mind immediately was at lunch.
- 23:57"Lunch with Casey" and then "Felix the Cat." That
- 24:02was playing when we lived on Chatham. Wasn't
- 24:07there a "Hercules" cartoon? I think there was.
- 24:11"Davey and Goliath." What were some of the cartoons,
- 24:15Tom? "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids." That was
- 24:19a little later. I mean, I obviously remember
- 24:23"Looney Tunes," obviously it was very popular.
- 24:27What I remember, I was pretty young. I don't
- 24:29even know if I was in school yet, but the "Mel
- 24:32Jass Matinee." Oh, sure, after Casey. After Casey
- 24:35Jones. I think it was always on. with the folks,
- 24:39but I also remember seeing "Star Trek" when I first
- 24:44came into syndication. It was on every day at
- 24:47five o 'clock. I watched that before dinner.
- 24:49Yes, I do remember that. 68-ish or something.
- 24:54something like that. And still watch that occasionally.
- 25:01Today you know yeah it's uh it's still all over
- 25:04the place which is we watch it every night when
- 25:06you think about it you know yeah um and then
- 25:09the variety shows "Smothers Brothers" and "Sonny
- 25:12and Cher" and stuff like that laughter remember
- 25:14laughing all the bands all the bands would come
- 25:16on it's all of it the beat is that's how i got
- 25:19into music yeah "Batman" was huge because
- 25:23every, you know, there weren't choices. So every,
- 25:26I swear every kid in your class watched "Batman."
- 25:30So you all had a point of reference. You'd all
- 25:33discuss the latest "Batman" episode. Sure. And
- 25:36also growing up, one of my, one of the things
- 25:38I remember most would be going to sleep and the
- 25:40old man was always up late, you know, and you
- 25:44know, you'd just be dozing off and tonight you
- 25:46would start. Yes. Yep, our dad was a bit of an
- 25:52insomniac. He didn't sleep much, but yeah, that
- 25:58was also obviously big back in the day. I remember
- 26:00watching "I Spy" with him too. That was like a
- 26:04late night drama or whatever. I remember watching
- 26:07that with dad. The one TV memory that I have
- 26:11of that house is very real to me. I was absent
- 26:15the day that John F. Kennedy got shot. Oh, I
- 26:17didn't know that. I was literally watching. Because
- 26:20I was laying on the couch I was watching as the
- 26:22world turns with mom when Walter Cronkite actually
- 26:25broke in and that was yeah, that's I mean that's
- 26:29always I remember that day just vividly and then
- 26:32we watched TV for like four days. Yeah, Tom your
- 26:36birthday was just a couple days before that.
- 26:39I remember seeing Bobby Kennedy's stuff on TV.
- 26:44I was actually in school at Highland. We got
- 26:46sent home. I remember they played the Each room
- 26:50had a speaker above the teacher's desk and they
- 26:52just put in like CCO radio or CBS News. And I
- 26:56remember the look on my teacher's face when they
- 26:58talked about Kennedy being assassinated. It was
- 27:02something, it was something. Definitely. This
- 27:06might depend on our age difference too, but what
- 27:09was your favorite radio station, Tom, when you
- 27:11were listening? Oh boy, probably KDWB back in
- 27:14the day. We didn't have FM early at all. What
- 27:17was KQ? like when you were a teenager? I remember
- 27:20listening to it occasionally, but not as much
- 27:25as, you know, KDWB. That and WDGY,
- 27:31I think, was a rock star back then, too. KQ
- 27:35was KQRS. don't remember that but um and
- 27:39then KSTP had some Top 40 for a while and right
- 27:42there were three or four I think top 40s days
- 27:44and it was all am yes i mean fm was slowly coming
- 27:48into but you know car radios only had yeah so
- 27:51that's one thing i remember too growing up a
- 27:53lot was the on as far as radio goes was uh Dad
- 27:58always had the Twins. Oh, sure. Oh, yeah. Yeah.
- 28:02Yeah. No TV. Well, they would. They did televise
- 28:08more games. But yeah, I remember the radio. WCCO
- 28:13had virtually every team that we would follow.
- 28:15The Gophers. Yes. Football and basketball. I
- 28:19don't know if hockey was on WCCO. I don't remember
- 28:21that. Right. But football and basketball for
- 28:23sure. And the Twins and the Vikings and. Yep.
- 28:26Yep. Stars. We didn't have NBA growing up. It
- 28:31didn't come till much later. Well, but I do remember
- 28:35watching the Lakers and the Celtics a lot. ABC
- 28:40would show Sunday games. That was different back
- 28:47then. And then Tommy, well, Tommy would remember,
- 28:50we didn't even have a color TV until like the
- 28:54maybe 72 or 73. That's how we got by. And our
- 29:00TVs didn't have remotes. Boomers can remember
- 29:05this, but I can remember, you know, you have
- 29:06to get up and turn and click it to a certain
- 29:08channel and hit, you had to worry about antennas.
- 29:11You know, your reception wasn't always good.
- 29:13The picture would suck and you just. We had not
- 29:15an uncle, Aunt Barbara and Uncle Dan had color
- 29:18TV. Yeah. And I remember it was I remember watching
- 29:21a hockey game and I thought it was really cool
- 29:24to see this. But as I recall, it was like everything
- 29:27was kind of washed out. The color wasn't real.
- 29:29It wasn't high def. It wasn't exactly high def,
- 29:32but it was still. You didn't know any better.
- 29:34It was still really, really cool to see. Well,
- 29:36that was dad's rationale. He said that they still
- 29:38haven't really perfected the color to the tube
- 29:40yet, so I'm not going to spend money on it. Yeah.
- 29:42That was his story. He stuck to it until the
- 29:44early 70s. So, yep. But yeah, it was. Bob, I
- 29:49remember you would sneak. Did you have a transistor
- 29:52radio? Oh, sure sneak that into the bedroom and
- 29:56I remember hearing "Mr. Tambourine Man" by the
- 29:59Byrds. Yeah thinking that was the coolest thing
- 30:01ever I was probably in about fourth grade fifth
- 30:04grade or something. So we're about the size of
- 30:06a cell phone now, maybe a little thicker. Yeah,
- 30:10but about same dimensions and you had to have
- 30:13batteries in their batteries and it was strictly
- 30:15AM no FM stations You could hear your Top
- 30:1840 stuff. So right Uh, yes. Well, the transistor
- 30:23radio is, um, you know, I had that paper route
- 30:26for years, you know, so it was about 10, but,
- 30:29um, you know, Star Tribune bags, they would have
- 30:31a pouch in the front for your collection. Yes,
- 30:35collect. It was the perfect size for, I collect
- 30:38210 or whatever it was, you know, for a month
- 30:41of paper. But, um, it was perfect size for a
- 30:44transistor radio. So when I go do my paper audit
- 30:47four in the morning, you know, I'd have it. In
- 30:50fact, I had that radio going and left on my paper
- 30:54out at, I don't know what it was, five in the
- 30:55morning or something like that and turned it
- 30:58on and that was the break of news was that Elvis
- 31:03died. Oh, wow. I remember. Wow. It's just weird.
- 31:06So that would have been 77. So that was towards
- 31:10the end of my career. I was like 14 then, so
- 31:12I was getting ready to wash dishes somewhere
- 31:14or something. So that was the end of my paper
- 31:16on career. I'll never forget that. And that same
- 31:20radio, a few years later, still listening to
- 31:24that stinkin' transistor radio was when Lenin
- 31:28got shot. While I was 80. I think I graduated
- 31:34to a better radio after that. vividly remember
- 31:37those two stories coming over. That's interesting.
- 31:40I just thinking about that. Do you think anybody
- 31:41still has a transistor radio from that era? You
- 31:45know, if you're a collector, maybe you do. You
- 31:46probably find one on eBay. And two, would they
- 31:48even work? Yeah. I mean, you can put a battery
- 31:51in it, but I would think they would. Those parts
- 31:53would still work. Sure. Car radio still work.
- 31:57As before. Yeah. Long before digital, so. Yes.
- 32:01Oh, crazy, crazy. Okay, again, the name of this
- 32:04podcast is "Hangin' Out with Bob." I'm your host,
- 32:06Bob Edholm, and my two guests are my brothers,
- 32:08Dave and Tom Edholm. This is fun, guys. It's
- 32:15fun to reminisce. It's always fun to do this.
- 32:17And I thought, you know, if I'm going to start
- 32:18doing podcasts, I couldn't think of two other
- 32:21guys I'd rather have with me the first time.
- 32:23So I appreciate your being with me today. So
- 32:25thanks for coming by. It's fun. Again, the name
- 32:28of this podcast is "Hangin' Out with Bob." I think
- 32:31everybody has a story to tell. And I believe
- 32:33most people like to tell stories and talk about
- 32:35the things that they like to do and the things
- 32:37that interest them. And when you ask people the
- 32:40right questions, you're going to learn a lot
- 32:41of things about them. So I've got a lot of people
- 32:44in mind that I like to have on my podcast as
- 32:46future guests. So people that family, friends.
- 32:50people that I grew up with, people I worked with,
- 32:53people I've drunk beer with. It'd be fun just
- 32:55to connect with some of those people. And I think
- 32:57they're already aware that I'm going to be getting
- 32:58in touch with them. But again, to listeners out
- 33:00there, thank you for hanging with us. I'm Bob
- 33:03Edholm. And thanks for listening. And we hope
- 33:06to have you back for the next episode we have.
- 33:12Take care.
