- 0:57Hello, and welcome back to the Arise Women of God podcast.
- 1:00I'm your host, Tamara K.
- 1:01Anderson, and I'm so thrilled to have the wonderful Wendy Christiansen joining me today as we tackle this heavy question.
- 1:09Is depression spiritual warfare?
- 1:12And the reason I'm glad Wendy is here is because she has over 30 years of experience as a licensed clinical social worker, and she happens to be an amazing mom and fellow warrior of light.
- 1:26And today, we're breaking down three critical pillars.
- 1:29First, the exacerbation effect, how the adversary exploits our genetics and physical exhaustion.
- 1:38Second, the mother's front line, my personal story of combining clinical medicine with spiritual warfare.
- 1:46And third, the King Saul principle, how to use light to break up the spirit of heaviness.
- 1:53But let's begin by answering this big question about depression and spiritual warfare directly.
- 1:59As a clinical professional, Wendy sees this kind of interaction every single day.
- 2:05Let's listen to her explain how the enemy targets us when our physical bodies are compromised.
- 2:11Depression can be many different things.
- 2:14It can be a genetic tendency that is actually, you know, if you've got it in your family line, it can carry through your genes.
- 2:21So it absolutely can be a genetic thing.
- 2:23There are different types, many different types of depression.
- 2:26Some of those like, for example, bipolar, you, you really do need to get some treatment for some medication combined with some therapy.
- 2:35But can depression also be spiritual warfare?
- 2:38Absolutely it can.
- 2:41It can be Satan attacking.
- 2:43Satan likes to take something that's already there and exacerbate it and make it worse.
- 2:48And he absolutely does that with depression.
- 2:51I've seen it with new moms and postpartum depression.
- 2:53He's going to attack them when they're exhausted and tired and so overwhelmed.
- 2:57But such an important time, right, for this brand new baby and bringing this new little spirit into the world.
- 3:03He will attack them with that depression.
- 3:06And so sometimes it's kind of hard to know the difference.
- 3:10I would just pretty much guarantee that even if it's a genetic depression, he's also probably working on you and attacking it and making it worse.
- 3:18That's.
- 3:19That's kind of the way he works, is he'll take whatever we're dealing with and he'll make it worse.
- 3:23So it's important, I think, to notice when I'm feeling really overwhelmed, I'm feeling exhausted, I'm feeling tired, and especially if you're feeling not like yourself, that's probably the thing I hear the most.
- 3:36That kind of indicates to me, oh, somebody, they're being attacked by Satan.
- 3:41When they come in, somebody in my office will sit down and say, hey, I'm just not feeling myself.
- 3:46I feel exhausted.
- 3:47And depression does that anyways.
- 3:50But then you're feeling maybe more moody than you usually are or feeling really off and not your typical self.
- 3:58Your moods, not only are they like a little kid roller coaster, they're like a massive adult roller coaster.
- 4:04Right.
- 4:04With your moods.
- 4:06Absolutely.
- 4:07He's exacerbating it, so I would just count on it.
- 4:10And there's nothing wrong with just casting out Satan when you're dealing with depression, because depression is hard and difficult and it's heavy.
- 4:18And I.
- 4:20I don't think that the God, that God really wants us to be depressed, but he knows it's a side effect, it's a consequence, it's a result of living here.
- 4:28There's just so many beautiful things that you can do as far as treating depression.
- 4:33But I would also, in the back of my mind, be getting rid of Satan because, you know, he's exacerbating it.
- 4:40And you can just easily say, I have my clients just say, in the name of Jesus Christ, I command the spirit of depression to leave.
- 4:47I cast it out and I cast it away from me, Especially if you're having a hard day.
- 4:51I completely agree with what Wendy just shared, and I want to speak directly to the mom who's in the trenches right now.
- 4:58I have a couple of siblings and children who have battled deep depression.
- 5:04And I have learned that while depression may absolutely be a chemical imbalance, as loved ones, we are also helping them wage a fierce battle against the adversary.
- 5:17Getting my children on the right medication was a game changer for each of them.
- 5:22But medicine alone did not solve the spiritual battle.
- 5:27There were so many times when I sat there right beside them, helping them counter the negative swirling voices in their heads with absolute truth of their identity.
- 5:38You are a child of God.
- 5:39You have worth and value.
- 5:41There is hope and there is healing ahead.
- 5:44I taught them how to cast out the adversary in the name of Jesus Christ and bring in light.
- 5:52And when I physically couldn't be in the room with them because perhaps they were away or up at school, I taught them to call on ministering angels in their hardest moments.
- 6:03Just like an angel came and ministered to Jesus Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane in his hardest moment.
- 6:10This battle is real because every soul is precious in the eyes of God.
- 6:16But my friends, there is a dangerous myth in Christian culture that if you just read your Bible enough and pray fervently with all your soul, that depression will magically vanish.
- 6:28Let's listen to Wende shatter this myth and explain exactly how to combine physical habits with spiritual eviction.
- 6:38Another thing I hear a lot too is people will say, well, if you just read your scriptures every day, if you just pray every day, you, your depression will go away.
- 6:47No, you need to treat it.
- 6:49You need to make sure.
- 6:51I'm looking at it through a lens of am I physically doing what I need to?
- 6:55Am I getting sleep?
- 6:57Is my sleep effective?
- 6:59Because if you're not getting sleep, that will add to depression.
- 7:01Is my nutrition good?
- 7:03If you're not eating well, that will give you brain fog and that will also make it difficult and even hydrating.
- 7:08Well.
- 7:09Exercise is actually one of the number one things for depression.
- 7:12Like you need to be able to do these things that are important, taking care of that mental health and that mental well being.
- 7:18Along with getting rid of the spiritual warfare, prayer and scriptures can give you more light.
- 7:26They can boost and help add to the light that your body is craving and needing.
- 7:32When you're dealing with depression, they don't take it away, but they can definitely battle it.
- 7:37They're tools in the battle against depression to give you more light as well as completely casting it out and casting it away from you.
- 7:46I love how Wendy phrased that prayer and scriptures don't instantly cure the chemical imbalance, but they add the light your body is craving.
- 7:57We see this exact combination of spiritual heaviness and the need for light.
- 8:01In the Old Testament, King Saul was plagued by a chronic oppressive spirit of heaviness and distressing thoughts that left him completely paralyzed.
- 8:13Human logic couldn't fix it, so his servants brought in young David to play the harp.
- 8:19The beautiful music and praise broke the heaviness and darkness in Saul's mind, bringing him immediate emotional and spiritual relief.
- 8:31If your home feels heavy, you can change that same frequency.
- 8:36Play worship music, speak truth, stand on the promises found in Isaiah, chapter 61, verse 3, where God indeed promises to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit
- 8:55of heaviness.
- 8:56So, my friend, you do not have to keep wearing that garment of heaviness that the enemy is trying to lash upon you.
- 9:04If you're ready to trade that spirit of heaviness and actively defend your family's mental and spiritual health, Wendy and I have a powerful tool that we would love to give you.
