- 0:00Welcome to Sober Talk. I'm Dennis and I've lived
- 0:03experience of alcohol. If you or anyone you know is
- 0:06struggling with alcohol, please call Alcoholics Anonymous on
- 0:101300 double 22222 or check out their website on aa.org dot a U
- 0:19I'll just run through the preamble of Alcoholics
- 0:21Anonymous. Alcoholics Anonymous is a
- 0:24fellowship of men and women. We share their experience,
- 0:27strengthen up with each other. They must solve their problems
- 0:31and help others to recover from alcoholism.
- 0:34The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop
- 0:37drinking. There are no Jews of Feast for A
- 0:39membership. We are self supporting through
- 0:41our own contributions. A is not allied with any sect,
- 0:45denomination, politics, organization or institution.
- 0:49Does not wish to engage in any controversy, neither endorses or
- 0:53oppose any causes. Our primary purpose is steer.
- 0:56So many help other Alcoholics achieve sobriety.
- 1:00Good on My name is in Realman alcoholic and it's really good
- 1:06to be able to share me story. I I grew up in a little southern
- 1:21in the West W Australia. And I always, I could say that I
- 1:31had a pretty good childhood. My parents were immigrants from
- 1:41Europe and yeah, me dad, me dad was quite religious so as my mum
- 1:50and I had. Well, I've got an older sister,
- 1:57two older brothers and a younger brother, so I'm sort of in
- 2:01between at school. I just want, you know, sort of
- 2:08do very well at school. I wasn't really interested in
- 2:14being at school. I was more interested in, you
- 2:19know, getting me and. Starting to work as soon as I
- 2:23could really. I was scored fourteen, which was
- 2:28you know pretty common landing. This is back in the early 70s.
- 2:38Turned 14 and 74 we get as a builder so I just write a letter
- 2:45and said that. Henry's got a job.
- 2:49And if you kind of let us find that you got a job, you could
- 2:52leave school at 14. So I think I've turned 14 and
- 2:57then two weeks later, just school.
- 2:59And I can remember that day. I thought that was best, one of
- 3:03the best days of life, leaving school like I was free.
- 3:08But then I started working, you know, so I was only a kid.
- 3:12But. I always, always had this sense
- 3:19of, you know, not not quite fitting in as as much as I want
- 3:25to sit in. And like I said, you know, the
- 3:30parents are very religious and we did the church sing every
- 3:35Sunday and you know, dad would cry before every meal and then
- 3:40like at evening meals. Make sure to do the Bible
- 3:44reading and talk about the reading.
- 3:46And so I had a lot of religious instruction, if you like, and I
- 3:53had a lot of No Fear I suppose or anxiety as a kid and I didn't
- 4:01quite know why or I didn't really question that actually.
- 4:06I just it was just the way it was for me and.
- 4:12You know, so at a very early age I remember I can it must have
- 4:16been in grades and also in primary school and I'm seeing a
- 4:21couple of balls of beer and I brought a ball of beer eating
- 4:26that was like a big deal and that was good fun and stuff.
- 4:29So and I got an older brother of life looked up to him and.
- 4:38He'd sort of he's, he like drinking and stuff as well.
- 4:41And well, there's school. I started, you know, drinking on
- 4:46the weekends and that and getting sick, of course.
- 4:51But a lot the why the alcohol made me feel and that was the
- 4:57whole thing, that it made me feel good.
- 5:00It made me sort of escape that anxiety.
- 5:06And that inbuilt fear and there was this thing where I remember
- 5:13Miguel always used to say you know, like don't be going down
- 5:17the pubs and stuff like that. There was just a lot of fear
- 5:23about real drinking pubs and that and course like I just, I
- 5:29just wanted to be part of that, you know and so.
- 5:36I think I was more of been 15, but it didn't seem that much
- 5:43long after on last school. Then the older brother took me
- 5:49to the pub and they'll send the party with a beer on the bar.
- 5:54And also, wow, this is really, really cool, like, you know?
- 6:00It was that thing of now that you work like a man, you can
- 6:04drink like a man. And I had this sense of like
- 6:08blackouts and I didn't know what a blackout was until, you know,
- 6:14I got to I I many years later. But I did have blackouts for the
- 6:20ability smoked dug as well. That was a big part of our
- 6:26story. So smoke and dug.
- 6:29A drink and then just basically run into mutt.
- 6:34But there was that one saw to me that felt that I just, I wasn't
- 6:41right. And then there was the other
- 6:43sword of me that I just I just sort of couldn't connect with.
- 6:49And it wasn't until years and years later that I got into I,
- 6:53I, and all sort of mating 1. One time, and this guy said that
- 6:59he always felt like he was too bad for the goodies and too good
- 7:07for the baddies. And that's what I felt like.
- 7:11It's OK. I could hang out with the
- 7:13baddies if you like all the people that you know, didn't
- 7:16sort of bother too much about what was going on, mate.
- 7:20They seemed to have this thing where?
- 7:24You know, But you know, for me, I'd get up in the morning after
- 7:32being out and doing stuff and stepping out on the drink, and
- 7:37then the next morning I'd I'd get that guilt kicking in and
- 7:43people that I like hanging out with when I was drinking.
- 7:47I didn't seem to have that, that fear and stuff the next morning.
- 7:52Where? With me, I remember many, many
- 7:55times like I'd wake up before the sun come up and I there was
- 8:02part of me that I just couldn't wait for that sun to come up to
- 8:07find out what what actually happened the night before, what
- 8:11I'd done cause I couldn't remember.
- 8:13I'd be lying there racking my brains trying to work out what
- 8:17happened the night before, and I'd get stuff where I'd get
- 8:22this. Hang a fear, kicking me out so
- 8:25I'd realize I'd go, wow, what did I do or what did I say?
- 8:30And then there was another side of me where I just didn't want
- 8:34the sun to come up and I didn't wanna know what happened the
- 8:38night before. So I was stuck in that crazy
- 8:41dilemma. But you know, I got married
- 8:46later on and I had some kids and.
- 8:50I suppose I was what they call a high functioning alcoholic.
- 8:54So I've always worked and I had that work ethic instilled in me
- 8:59from a very young age. I was that thing, you know, if
- 9:02you don't work you donate. So, you know, I've always worked
- 9:06hard and stuff, so I've always had money, but but but there was
- 9:14that thing and again, you know, what's the stuff that I know
- 9:17now? I only know because, you know,
- 9:22I've been in the room. So I've been in Alcoholics
- 9:24Anonymous for a few while now, and I've learned a lot about
- 9:30myself as an alcoholic. And you know, there was a time
- 9:35there, you know, like I've got married, I had kids, had three
- 9:40beautiful kids, had a beautiful wife.
- 9:43The house, like I had it all. And yet, you know, there was.
- 9:47There was no. Satisfying this.
- 9:51And again, this is what I heard in I I, you know, I heard this
- 9:56someone described as a hole in the soul.
- 9:59And I really, really that that that phrase really resonated
- 10:04with me. That was that you know, I got
- 10:08everything that I thought would fix me on the outside.
- 10:12And then it was what? What next?
- 10:14What next? What next?
- 10:17I didn't describe like this too. It was like someone described.
- 10:22It was like having like having a cold night.
- 10:26And I've got this blanket, this blanket, and it's not quite long
- 10:32enough. So like I'll cover my feet.
- 10:37Like my chest is exposed. I've got a cold chest and I lift
- 10:41the blanket up and I just there was that sense.
- 10:46Of frustration that I had, and I think that's closer to how I
- 10:52could describe how I felt for many, many, many years.
- 10:57A sense of frustration and asked me what I was frustrated about.
- 11:04You know, I couldn't. I couldn't really know it down
- 11:08to one thing. It was many, many things.
- 11:12And so, you know, I left my wife, I left my three beautiful
- 11:16kids, so, you know, I could drink and I didn't know.
- 11:21But that's the reason I did that at the time, You know, I blamed
- 11:26many other things. I'm not blind, other people, you
- 11:29know, from my marriage breakdown.
- 11:31But you know, I've since I've been cyber, I've come to realize
- 11:37that it was. Alcoholism and you know there's
- 11:42a part in the big book that talks about the alcoholic being
- 11:47self-centered and selfish to the very core and that was me
- 11:51through on the three. You know, there's a part in the
- 11:56big book too, describes the alcoholic as like, you know,
- 12:00tornado going through people's lives, you know, breaking hearts
- 12:05and. Panel did all that.
- 12:08You know, there's a thing and I say that Alcoholics and it was
- 12:13just the most expensive clump to get into.
- 12:17And it's not only monetary terms but you know mostly in that to a
- 12:23lot of, you know, people around me, the people that love me the
- 12:27most, I I paid all costs for me to get in the rooms too.
- 12:32But I was so grateful. That I did get in the rooms and
- 12:39you know, Alcoholics Anonymous has has just been an incredibly
- 12:48a learning process to be able to live with me and you know, the
- 12:56alcohol standard, my emotional growth.
- 13:00So I picked up me first. Well, I started, I was seriously
- 13:04treating on the weekends and that and I was about, you know,
- 13:081415 And then so when I finally got sober that the age of 43, I
- 13:21had the emotional makeup of a, you know, maybe a 14 year old.
- 13:29Kid and I thought I was a man because, you know, I provided, I
- 13:36worked hard and I brought home the money and that.
- 13:38But emotionally, you know, I have to say I wasn't there for
- 13:43more kids and I wasn't there for my wife neither, you know, So,
- 13:47but I can only see that after, you know, all coming up for 20
- 13:56years this year. And I'm playing Cyber now and
- 14:00and that's not, you know, thanks to me it's it's thanks to, you
- 14:08know Alcoholics Anonymous and and and I really believe, you
- 14:13know that the program that's a viral 1II is a living program
- 14:20and when I say living program, it's the fellowship that has
- 14:25held me. In good state throughout these
- 14:2920 years that I've been sober, you know, I've been, you know,
- 14:34I've been married in sobriety, been divorced in the sobriety of
- 14:41had houses in sobriety, of lifting tents and sobriety, you
- 14:46know, of had family members die a lost opportunity and I haven't
- 14:55needed to pick up a drink. And that's solely because of,
- 15:02you know, the program, the fellowship, and a high power
- 15:08that I really don't understand, but I really feel now that, you
- 15:16know, I haven't got that insidious sense of frustration
- 15:22going on with me anymore. You know I really feel a sense
- 15:29of well-being about me in a sense of peace that I was
- 15:34chasing the bottom of the bottle throughout when it all time I
- 15:39was drinking. I just wanted to feel OK and and
- 15:44I think it did. It didn't relieve, it didn't
- 15:48relieve me, but what it end up doing it just.
- 15:53Just destroyed anything good in my life and but on the other
- 16:00side of the coin you know I I have you know given leap back so
- 16:11many things people in my life well that you know I'd cause so
- 16:16much trouble for in my path I'd get on with well there.
- 16:21And you know, I've got, I've got resemblance towards anybody
- 16:29anymore because the resentment, you know, just destroys, just
- 16:36destroys. I don't want to have any
- 16:37resentment to anybody or anything anymore.
- 16:41And it is that thing of going through the steps and you know,
- 16:47I have handed my will and my life I don't care of.
- 16:51You know more hell whatever that is call it called call it you
- 16:56know cried outdoors called call it a group of drugs.
- 17:00GID. You know which is you know the
- 17:04the fellowship of the Alcoholics are almost which is carried
- 17:07through and it's it's 20, you know, 24/7 support and it
- 17:17doesn't cost anything to go to meetings.
- 17:20I don't. And the thing that really blew
- 17:22me away when I first started coming into I I was that you
- 17:28know I can shared this story almost fear my story near.
- 17:35And it was that there was that thing of attraction where, you
- 17:40know, they said if you want what we've got and maybe you can do
- 17:45what we've done. And it wasn't when.
- 17:50I was in more drinking. You know many people are rarely
- 17:54on side of me. You gotta stop drinking.
- 17:56You gotta stop drinking. But no one run of these people
- 18:01would show me how to stop because I didn't know where I
- 18:05had for in the 1st place. Only another real alcoholic can
- 18:09understand another alcoholic and his destiny.
- 18:13That thing is. One alcoholic to the other and
- 18:17what I really loved about I I is that and I'll still do is that
- 18:22you know there's not people you know pointless finger at me can
- 18:26you got to do this and you got to do that like I said before
- 18:30you know and I shared this story and I said this is how we did
- 18:34it. And if you want what we got,
- 18:37maybe you can do what we've done it, you know I've tried.
- 18:41I've tried to do that to the best of my ability and it it's
- 18:45not about getting it done perfectly right.
- 18:48It's about drawing in that 12 step it, you know, it's having
- 18:54out of spiritual awakening. We try to carry this message to
- 18:58Alcoholics and practice these principles in all our fears.
- 19:04And when I realized that that's all I've got to do is try and
- 19:11all succeeding because you know, there was a part, a time in my
- 19:18cyber life where you know, I was talking what's the newcomers and
- 19:22that to meetings and stuff and and most of them would go out
- 19:27and drink and we can. And I thought maybe I'm doing
- 19:31something wrong. Maybe I'm doing something wrong?
- 19:33And then, you know, like the someone said to me one night at
- 19:37a meeting, they said, well, what do you mean?
- 19:39I said, well, they're not saying this over.
- 19:41And they said, well, are you God, are ya?
- 19:44And that pulled me back in my place and I realised that I went
- 19:48back and had a look at that true step and it says, you know,
- 19:53tried. And once I once I tried and I'll
- 19:57keep trying, I've succeeded. And that's the beautiful thing
- 20:01about it. And even.
- 20:04You know, you know, I think I haven't picked up a drink since
- 20:09I've been in, but like 10 years before I come in, I reckon I was
- 20:14about in my 30s, so I might have been a bit young, a bit old.
- 20:19I can't remember exactly when I came to one meeting and I
- 20:24didn't. I didn't stay and for me there
- 20:28was definitely a case of, you know, I went back out there and
- 20:33I lost everything and still put off come and come back in and
- 20:40you know, all really believe that support is a gift.
- 20:46But I can lose it. I can lose it if I don't hang on
- 20:50to it. And he'll and he'll hang on to
- 20:53it is that I'll try and be grateful every day for my
- 20:59support. You know I'm I'm like a
- 21:03gratitude just in my mind about the things that I've got and you
- 21:10know I don't dwell I don't while I in all the stuff that's
- 21:16happened in the past or that all my dark past.
- 21:20But again you know it's it's amazing program this amazing
- 21:28fellowship and you know it talks about as an alcoholic my past
- 21:35becomes my greatest assets. My darkest path becomes my
- 21:41greatest asset. And I don't think you know when
- 21:46I first started getting a grips on that concept you know I was
- 21:53just so grateful for that as well.
- 21:56So there's nothing negative finally as an alcoholic in this
- 22:03program, even if you know and God forbid that I had a slip and
- 22:08I'll bastard, you know at least even that process that I'll slip
- 22:13up the stairs. I don't fall down the stairs
- 22:17because what it does, it Orient writes to me that I am an
- 22:21alcoholic and to be an alcoholic and not drink one day at a time
- 22:28that is a miracle. And Oh no, I am a walking
- 22:32miracle. And I truly find that and I've
- 22:37got an amazing sense of purpose in my life and and what primary
- 22:43purpose is to stay sober. If I do that everything else is
- 22:47going to be OK. And it is OK.
- 22:49I'm well looked after. I'm more than OK.
- 22:53All my needs are provided. I want for nothing or get on
- 23:00really well with more, you know, with more kids or get on well
- 23:04with my ex wives, you know, You know, my life is full and I'm
- 23:12very grateful and I'm very grateful that as I would be she
- 23:16and I try more shares, you know, won't be able to help somebody
- 23:22out there that's looking for an answer to give up drinking.
- 23:25So thanks very much. Good on your end.
- 23:27Thanks a lot, Matt. Well said.
