- 0:45Welcome back to Z boundary Corner podcast with my partner.
- 0:50Brian siglo, I'm Curtis Wilson. Brian, you surprised me a couple
- 0:54minutes ago, big guy. Yeah buddy.
- 0:57I as you all know everybody out there, this is a offensive
- 1:01lineman podcast unofficially. So what better way to kind of,
- 1:08you know, bring that home then to have the Hokies offensive
- 1:12line coach, Joe Rudolph on. Us.
- 1:14And we're not going to hesitate really going, bring him on.
- 1:19Hey coach. How you doing tonight?
- 1:21Doing great Brian. Curtis how you doing?
- 1:23We're doing, we're doing good coach Rudolfo.
- 1:26It's a pleasure to have you. We thought we weren't going to
- 1:29have you this week. We hadn't heard back from
- 1:31Travis, but I mean, it was a, it was an absolute a pleasant
- 1:36surprise. When I clicked on the button
- 1:38about 10 minutes ago, and there's Brian and Coach Rudolph,
- 1:41and I'm like, oh shit. It's gonna trip.
- 1:48How you doing this evening, obviously.
- 1:49I see, Dwayne Brown over your left shoulder.
- 1:52They're shy, man. I'm assuming you're at the
- 1:54merryman still, and no question that that time of year is just
- 1:58kind of grinding. Trying to put everything we can
- 2:01together to be at her. Best, we appreciate you taking
- 2:05out your time tonight to speak with us and to speak here with
- 2:09Hokie nation. And you know what, we'll try to
- 2:11make it short and quick so you can get back to doing what you
- 2:14do. So I let Brian lead off with
- 2:16this one because I'm obviously We big man here playing no line
- 2:19in college. I know this is a treat for you
- 2:21Brian? Absolutely.
- 2:23Absolutely. And let's start there because my
- 2:27offensive line coach in college was actually, Keith goon conlon
- 2:31played at Penn State in the early 90s under Joe.
- 2:34Paw I know you were about the same time frame, they're
- 2:39Wisconsin. What was it like playing during
- 2:42that era? I think it was a had a blast
- 2:46playing the game. I mean I played my first year at
- 2:50linebacker and then I think they well I didn't I don't think they
- 2:54told me that my summer goal was to come back is the biggest
- 2:57linebacker in the Big Ten. So I thought I might be moving
- 3:00positions and I just embraced it and I loved it man, and I love
- 3:06knocking the snot out of linebackers because I wasn't
- 3:09playing anymore. And so it was it was a position.
- 3:13It'd be great on a great offensive line coach Bill
- 3:15Callahan and it's just a great time to play.
- 3:18I played with an awesome group of guys.
- 3:20Still friends to this day and and something about somebody
- 3:24being an offensive lineman and being part of a line.
- 3:27That's pretty special in the pretty special game.
- 3:30Yeah, let's talk about that a little bit as far as the
- 3:31relationship because I know we had we actually had Keith on
- 3:35back during the offseason. Just after coach Pride, been
- 3:41hired by the Hokies before. I think you would come on at
- 3:43that point and he kind of talked about obviously being a Penn
- 3:47State guy. He's a radio guy up there and in
- 3:49Happy Valley now so had a lot of interactions with Coach Frey.
- 3:53What was that relationship and what was kind of the the dynamic
- 3:56that brought you to Blacksburg? Well It was a number of things
- 4:02that kind of just kind of fell into place 11.
- 4:05Being the people people that I knew through recruiting.
- 4:10They would always talk about Coach prying talk about what a
- 4:12great person. He is because recruiting goes
- 4:14both ways sometimes, right? Sometimes sometimes you work
- 4:17your tail off and and young man in family, feels like you're the
- 4:21best place for him and sometimes it's another place and but if
- 4:25they'll tell you how much they respect that person afterwards
- 4:28and then you kind of Get a little glimpse into who they
- 4:31really are, you know, even when circumstances, know maybe follow
- 4:34their way and then just competing against them.
- 4:36I always loved the way. Is this guys competed?
- 4:40I thought they were, I thought they understood that they were
- 4:43sound, I thought they understood not only assignment, but they
- 4:46played together and he played with a competitive mindset and
- 4:49then Blacksburg I came here once when I was coaching a pet and
- 4:53I'll never forget it, it was, it was so loud.
- 4:55You couldn't hear yourself think on the sidelines and it was
- 4:59unlike man. People love it.
- 5:01I mean, they love this place and these kids that were playing in
- 5:04front of them. You could just feel the energy
- 5:06here and, you know, it was always a place that kind of kind
- 5:10of stuck with me and, and just saw has been awesome.
- 5:14They're very grateful for the opportunity to be here, and I'm
- 5:17having a blast. Well, we're grateful.
- 5:19You're here coach, and it's funny.
- 5:21I hear the name Bill Callahan and, and I'm Corley.
- 5:24That's the same Bill Callahan that's been in the NFL the last
- 5:2620 years, right? Yeah, bug.
- 5:30Bill is our offensive line coach, and we're always constant
- 5:32and great. Coach great technician, you
- 5:36know, just just a great guy to go to learn under and you don't
- 5:40know. You not only learned how to play
- 5:42the game but you learn how to become a line, you learned all
- 5:45the steps that it takes. And and that's, that's always
- 5:48stuck with me. Yeah.
- 5:50And it is, it is something, you know, we've heard coach Pride
- 5:53mention, you're talking about the gelling, but let's ask this
- 5:56will schematic here, we're going the old If we ran a primary Zone
- 6:01base skiing and now with yours, this is Brian telling me.
- 6:05So if it's wrong, tell him he's wrong, running a little bit more
- 6:08Gap will bit more power scheme, what are the challenges when you
- 6:11have to make a change like that? And I know you've been doing
- 6:14this for, you know, close to 15 years, is no line coach.
- 6:18What are the challenges in changing?
- 6:19And you went, you went from Wisconsin pit.
- 6:22Back to Wisconsin now here. So, this is the fourth time, you
- 6:25third time, you've done it. What are those challenges?
- 6:29I think there's always challenges when you, when you
- 6:31come in a new, you know, there's there's challenges not only from
- 6:35schematics but there's there's challenges with relationships or
- 6:39Charlotte's challenges with normally relationships.
- 6:41You have with the guys, but the guys have with each other.
- 6:44And I think it's, I think they're just steps that you have
- 6:47to go through and take and, you know, I think in doing it.
- 6:50The one thing you got to be, is you got to be honest and you got
- 6:53to be consistent, you know, like if something's good your most
- 6:57say it's good. If it isn't that you're going to
- 6:59work on it to close the gap, to get it that way.
- 7:01And when I look at schematics because I know that was part of
- 7:04the question, the thing I always look at it, you know, you you
- 7:09watch and you judge each play and you say, okay if we do
- 7:12everything that we need to do, can this truly be successful or
- 7:17not successful and and then you kind of you kind of map out you
- 7:21want to get rid of all those plays that that, you know,
- 7:25you're going to struggle with regardless, if the guys are on
- 7:28Q, you want it, you want to eliminate them in every way,
- 7:31shape or form. How do you do it?
- 7:33Well, maybe it's not the formation.
- 7:35The run that out of maybe it's maybe it doesn't fit your guys,
- 7:39you know? And then that's that's part of
- 7:41what you go through. When you're, when you're coming
- 7:43into that group, you want to, you want to find something, you
- 7:45can really hang your hat on, but yet it's a battle to get there.
- 7:51Yeah, and I think, you know, what you talk about is kind of
- 7:53finding that that bread and butter that you're working with.
- 7:57And I know, you know, you've been Talking about some of the,
- 8:00the line hasn't fully gelled yet and you kind of waiting to see
- 8:03see that happen, you know, and we've seen some uneven results
- 8:07so far. What are the steps that are
- 8:08still needed? You feel to kind of get this
- 8:10where you feel comfortable from a running game perspective?
- 8:15Well it's like it's like you say the running game it's kind of
- 8:18like running game protections. They it's it's 11 guys playing
- 8:25you know and and There are times where you were, you feel like
- 8:30something's may be blocked up great, but maybe the timing from
- 8:33the from the backfill to the line of scrimmage, isn't what
- 8:36you want, then sometimes, boy, all those things are set up and
- 8:40man, you needed that one last fit by by a tight end or a, or a
- 8:45wide receiver. And then you know, sometimes
- 8:48you're like, man, we you know, we got to get our feet across
- 8:51the line of scrimmage is a no lineman in order to give this
- 8:54guy a chance to get the ball down, so we can make his cuts on
- 8:57those sides of the line of scrimmage.
- 8:58So it's really all those things coming together and when those
- 9:02things come together, it's beautiful, its consistency.
- 9:06And that's that's what you fight for it.
- 9:09It's not about what you can do. Well, it's about what you can
- 9:12do, well consistently. And, and that's, that's the
- 9:16grind your in, man. That's, that's a grind day in
- 9:19and day out, week in and week out.
- 9:21And that's the grind we're in the season.
- 9:23So, I do feel like we keep closing the gap on that, but we,
- 9:27it's our A fight right now and it's a colon, like these kids
- 9:31work. I like who they are.
- 9:33I like, who they are, and how they take care of each other off
- 9:37the field. Like they, they care about this
- 9:39place and they care about each other.
- 9:41And then working my tail off to try to help them to be at their
- 9:45best in the moment. And and, you know, I like that
- 9:49about them. I am grateful for working with
- 9:51of my I do. I enjoy him and I think we'll
- 9:54continue to close the gap on those things.
- 9:56All right. I know you can't pee.
- 9:58A favor to you, but of the of your starting five right now.
- 10:03When you first got the campus who was the one that sort of
- 10:06jumped on paper, as you know, that's my leader.
- 10:08That's the guy that's going to hold this group together and
- 10:12help us make those strides and you've got the job.
- 10:16Yeah, it's interesting. You ask that because you know
- 10:19the thing I've probably got told more than anything was.
- 10:22Most of the guys that had done a lot were going to be here
- 10:25anymore and and yet There were a lot of guys that, you know, one
- 10:31way shape or form had experienced, you know, like they
- 10:34had plays a little bit of all and, you know, I was intrigued
- 10:38about Silas, you know, and seeing him and meeting him.
- 10:42And then kind of, you know, thinking like, can we put this
- 10:47all together with him and and then, and then, you know, Johnny
- 10:50Jordan, you know, as a, as a guy that is added benefit multiple
- 10:55places. And, and, you know, his his
- 10:58Don't let these like Chinese to be Johnny.
- 11:01Will turn 32? You do You Know The Enemy?
- 11:07You know, you got Parker and Caden and plays a lot about.
- 11:09So, you know, in, you know, I knew I was going to have some
- 11:12leadership talking to Silas like I could feel that and I knew and
- 11:17I and he just he wanted to be that for the group and and
- 11:21Johnny, you know, he's our Communicator upfront, and the
- 11:24guys trust them and he knows things inside now and he puts
- 11:27any extra work to make sure Sure he does.
- 11:29And, and, you know and you know, I knew I would have some
- 11:33leadership out of those guys and I have Awesome.
- 11:37Awesome. Yeah, and that's kind of the two
- 11:39I think we had kind of keyed in on before the start of the
- 11:42season. So I'm glad that that's kind of
- 11:44how it worked out there and behind the scenes.
- 11:47And you talked about Johnny with communication, I know that
- 11:50Communications such a big and important part of playing
- 11:53offensive line and being able to do those things as a unit.
- 11:57How is that come from so far? A kind of across the board with
- 12:00Johnny, kind of leading the way there.
- 12:03I think it's been, I think it's been pretty darn good.
- 12:05You know it. Hasn't been things where, where
- 12:08you've been off from the standpoint of a sign mobilize, I
- 12:11think, you know, every once in a while, you know, you yet your
- 12:16Technique will show up being off.
- 12:18And how does your Technique show up being off?
- 12:20I, I tell the guys, it starts with her eyes, right?
- 12:23If your eyes, you're in the wrong place, it doesn't matter
- 12:27whether what the rest of you is doing your kind of subject to
- 12:30having problems, so that I discipline is huge.
- 12:34And, you know, sometimes we get the right, Call, we got all that
- 12:37but we let her eyes kind of Wonder and then and then you can
- 12:40create issues not only for you but for for your guy next to
- 12:44you, if your eyes need to be there.
- 12:45But I think the communication from Johnny's been really good.
- 12:49I think the guys get it, sometimes you get a looker too
- 12:52that, you know, you might hope the deal a little bit more
- 12:55confident with, but, but you're learning and, and, and it's not
- 12:59that nobody wants to do it, you just got to keep closing the gap
- 13:03of being doing it in the moment and taking being able to do it.
- 13:07To being able to do it consistently.
- 13:09All right. I'm gonna, I'm gonna go
- 13:10something coach prize said a couple times and I'm sure you're
- 13:12seeing it. When he talks about guys,
- 13:14pressing is that the thing with the eyes is that what you feel?
- 13:18Or is it even, or is it even more where when guys press run
- 13:23Brian's mentioned it to me, when he played there were times he
- 13:25pressed and he'd lose his technique.
- 13:27Is how do you coach the guys to say listen, you gotta trust what
- 13:33you're doing. Trust your eyes, trust your
- 13:35legs. And don't Press it.
- 13:36How tough is that the coach with your first year with the group?
- 13:42Yeah, no, I check. When you say that because those
- 13:45are the exact words I say out of my mouth, a lot of trust in your
- 13:48eyes, but coach cry. You know, the one thing about
- 13:51him is when, when he speaks to that group, I always think he
- 13:56puts his thumb right on the heart of what needs to be said.
- 14:00And, and I've really enjoyed that, you know, it, you know,
- 14:05when someone I mean exactly what you're thinking and you're like,
- 14:09man, that needs to be said right there.
- 14:11And so I know these kids are hanging on every word with that
- 14:15because he's, he's right in the moment with them.
- 14:19When I think you're pressing I think you're playing the game
- 14:23thinking about yourself. You're thinking about, not
- 14:27messing up your thinking about, you know, am I going to do this,
- 14:32right? And when you flip, the script
- 14:34is, when you play the game, The guys around you, when you want
- 14:38to do your job, great because man, this is going to be a great
- 14:42run right here for for Keyshawn, or this is going to be man.
- 14:46If I do this, I'm really going to help Gallo with the combo
- 14:50man. If I come off, you know, and I
- 14:53put my helmet right here, man. This go make them much easier
- 14:56Brock for Jesse. You know, like if each guy plays
- 14:59in a way where you're playing for each other, you're spending
- 15:02a lot less time thinking about yourself.
- 15:04You're not thinking about doing things.
- 15:06Wrong, you thinking about being great for the guys around you.
- 15:10And that's what I try to tell a man.
- 15:13You guys got a great off the field culture, you care about
- 15:15each other so much, bring that off.
- 15:18The fill culture rates in the field.
- 15:20You know what I mean? Don't worry about yourself care
- 15:23about each other more than that and that'll help you stay in the
- 15:26moment and that will help you overcome pressing.
- 15:28That will help you overcome anxiety or being nervous stay in
- 15:32the moment. Let It Go.
- 15:33Execute do it for those guys around you.
- 15:38Love that. Yeah, for sure.
- 15:39And you know, you talked about the veterans in this group,
- 15:41let's flip it a little bit and talk about some of the young
- 15:45guys on that line. We got, you know, Xavier
- 15:48chaplain, that's come in this fall.
- 15:51You know, brilliant Braylon made the position, switch, kind of
- 15:55late in the spring. And then we've had Jack,
- 15:57hollifield holding it down there and of Center and guard, a
- 16:02little bit during the Spring there, as well.
- 16:03When you were banging guys, were banged up a little bit, how how
- 16:07is it? Been with those guys and are we
- 16:10looking at any point to kind of get some of those guys, some
- 16:13extra snaps during the during the games.
- 16:15I do, we saw Braylon a little bit against, I think was UNC in
- 16:22and maybe a game before that as well, but are we?
- 16:25We played him. We played them in one game
- 16:27against West. Virginia Plan was a little bit
- 16:29more in that game. We try to sneak him in as a
- 16:32tight end and thought he would make a difference and some they
- 16:35had some size on their defensive end.
- 16:37And thought he would, he could be a good matchup, didn't get a
- 16:40lot of playing time in that one. We got a little bit.
- 16:43I'd be happy to talk about those guys Braylon for one.
- 16:46I think is got an incredible future.
- 16:49You know, he keeps pressing these right there from the
- 16:52standpoint of, you know, getting them on the field more.
- 16:56And, you know, he's had a few setbacks with with with with
- 17:01injuries that have that have just held him away from making
- 17:05that step, but I think he's going to happen.
- 17:07Some future. He's super 20.
- 17:10I think he's got the ability to play center and guard.
- 17:12He's explosive he's learning, you know, he's learning it on on
- 17:16the Run. They have and just kind of been
- 17:18part of it in Camp but I couldn't be more excited about
- 17:22him. Xavier chaplain, you know, just
- 17:25a mountain of a man. But every day he surprises You
- 17:29by how much he absorbs, how much he understands, he's got a, he's
- 17:34got a kind of a unique kind of Intuitive sense of humor.
- 17:39And man, I think the sky's the limit, you know, he's young,
- 17:43but, but I can't remember traveling the true freshman for,
- 17:49you know, I think maybe one time I think there was a true
- 17:51freshman. I traveled.
- 17:52It was concen so to be traveling Xavier, and Braylon and travel
- 17:58and Johnny Garrett at times travel and Brody Meadows of
- 18:02times. I mean that's that's pretty much
- 18:06been unheard of in. And in my experience.
- 18:09So I'm excited for that. I think I think those guys are
- 18:13worthy of it and I think those guys will push and have the
- 18:16opportunity and a big impact here and I could definitely see
- 18:20Xavier Braylon getting on the field and playing a little bit
- 18:24and and just going in the next year with a little more
- 18:27experience. Awesome to hear that good.
- 18:30Appreciate the little background there on those young guys before
- 18:34we wrap up tonight and let you get back to what you're doing
- 18:36there and merry men, you know, ever since you've come to
- 18:39Blacksburg what's kind of your food spot down there, where
- 18:43what's the spot you hit up? You know, late night like this.
- 18:46You're in the office. Who are you calling to say, grab
- 18:49me some food and bring it in well Coach.
- 18:53Quin is like the Aficionado of all Food Eatery.
- 19:00And he only tell you that he takes great enjoyment in holding
- 19:04that title and he's very much in the moment when he is in any
- 19:07establishment. So he has kind of taken me all
- 19:10over Blacksburg to like a whole bunch of places.
- 19:13I probably never would have gone to myself and it's been awesome
- 19:17man. Like there are some great food
- 19:19and there are some great people in this town.
- 19:20And we've, we've enjoyed a man and, and my family.
- 19:25They are what when we cuz I was here for a little bit before
- 19:29they They got here, they had finished.
- 19:31My boys, finished baseball back in back in Wisconsin, and then
- 19:35they came out right before school started, so, like taking
- 19:38them after that. So, few of the places whether it
- 19:41was, you know, whether it was a greens or lefties or wherever
- 19:45like we McAdoo's like we would be all over and making stops.
- 19:50Oh I like kind of changing it up a little bit and and it's kind
- 19:53of neat showing them around after kind of Sean showed me
- 19:57around a little bit. That's awesome.
- 20:00That's awesome. Yeah I mean we actually we're
- 20:04not Virginia Tech grads. We actually played at him and
- 20:07City division 3 but we spent any time that we could in Blacksburg
- 20:13so we are well versed in the in the food options there.
- 20:18We're up there all the time so it's awesome to hear that you're
- 20:21kind of immersing yourself in that culture as well.
- 20:25It's been good. I've made my Stomps everywhere
- 20:27and back and probably PK's probably gets the most action,
- 20:31I've everything so it's all pretty good.
- 20:34Love it. Good luck.
- 20:35Gotta get the cheetah wings and right gotta get this shit off
- 20:42coach, I want to say a big thank you for jumping on with us.
- 20:46It's been a good time. And I in the insight to kind of
- 20:49what's going on with the offensive line.
- 20:52Specifically, I think it's been good and I think good for the
- 20:54listeners to kind of kind of pick up on so we appreciate your
- 20:58time. Absolutely did my pleasure man.
- 21:01I appreciate you guys. And I know we got a great fan
- 21:05base and they care about this program, they care about these
- 21:08kids and that makes it fun. You know, when you come out in
- 21:12that stadium and you feel that, that's, that's why that's what
- 21:16reinforces all the work you put in.
- 21:18So we're going to grind and we're going to keep grinding,
- 21:20and we're going to get there. Awesome coach.
- 21:24Again, we appreciate you taking the time, we know how busy you
- 21:27are, we look forward. We thank you for coming on the
- 21:30light and we look forward to having you off.
- 21:32Maybe sometime in the offseason and Brian.
- 21:35And you can just sit down there and break down ol tape.
- 21:38And I just sit here, shut up and listen, take care of yourself,
- 21:42coach Rudolph, I'm frustrated. Well that was a surprise.
- 21:53It's always fun to get the the last minute.
- 21:55Thumbs up blast it. Well I'm not texted Brian it.
- 21:59Like what? Six and problems.
- 22:02Like you haven't heard back from Travis and we were like, oh it's
- 22:04okay, it's a busy week. We know these guys are busy in
- 22:07about five minutes. Before we go on.
- 22:09I'm running a little late tonight.
- 22:10I'm jumping in their phone and it was like holy shit.
- 22:14We got him. Well, I was on and I was about
- 22:16to let you know that that We got him and then he was on and I was
- 22:20I was talking to him. Well I was waiting for you to
- 22:22get on so yeah we really appreciate coach taking the time
- 22:28with us. That was that was awesome.
- 22:30Getting some insight into what's going to going on behind the
- 22:33scenes there with the offensive line and you have a little more
- 22:36input from from the staff there since we had you know, Kiante
- 22:40Jenkins on last week. In the player's perspective
- 22:43perspective get a little bit of the coach perspective this week.
- 22:46Absolutely man. And now he No, we've got we got
- 22:50we were 25 minutes. I did the episode.
- 22:51We got a ton more to unload. Yeah, that's right.
- 22:55It is awesome to hear from him and what guy he was.
- 22:59We were shooting the, we shot the breeze about 15 minutes.
- 23:02Before we jump, we literally press the button, literally at
- 23:05the last possible minute for. We could go and for our folks,
- 23:10if any of our hometown folks, in South Boston, less than we were
- 23:12explaining late, mop South Boston's few, a late model stock
- 23:16car racing Sitting On The Backs. Edge on tailgating the bologna
- 23:20burger, balloons Burger in hand. If you see a guy decked out in
- 23:24Virginia Tech gear and he asked for a beer and a bologna burger,
- 23:28it could potentially be Coach Joe Rudolph this summer because
- 23:31we told him it's the perfect time to go down.
- 23:33We pointed in the right direction.
- 23:34We're getting them in the right direction.
- 23:36Yeah, I think he's working that kind of that kind of South Side
- 23:39area. Yeah.
- 23:40With recruited his region. Yeah, there's reto mentioned.
- 23:43He said that was the his region. That is the southernmost point
- 23:46out facts. Yeah.
- 23:48Yeah. He says he said he was checking
- 23:49out the website before he got on he was like you guys are from
- 23:52Halifax County. He's like, yeah, I've been down
- 23:53in that area, you know, recruit? I was like, all right.
- 23:56Well, look, it makes you there. I like that.
- 23:59Yes, sir. All right, Braun.
- 24:00Well, that was awesome because to talk Rudolph but we've got to
- 24:04put a game in the books. We've got to talk about some
- 24:06stuff and we've got a preview some stuff.
- 24:09So, you know, let's let's go into it.
- 24:12Let's talk about the UNC game, you know, Hokies fall 41:10,
- 24:17I'll say this. Opening of the game was good.
- 24:20Those first two drives went pretty well, we stop them.
- 24:23You know, they got a first down, we stop them, we take the
- 24:27opening drive, go down, score three.
- 24:29And then you know, like so many elements of getting things,
- 24:33right? And things being fixed.
- 24:35And, you know, the flaws showed and at the in the postgame press
- 24:39conference in much like coach pry.
- 24:42And now, last week talking with kyanka this week, talking with
- 24:45Coach Rudolph, I'm not here, a lot of sugar coating on things,
- 24:49they're not being there, being honest and Coach Price set at
- 24:53that. You know, we're probably going
- 24:54to start playing freshman because of death in for an
- 24:57evaluation process and I don't think that shocks me or you It
- 25:01doesn't shock me at all, you know, we've kind of flirted with
- 25:05it. I think after West Virginia,
- 25:07some of the discussions we were having last week, you know, is
- 25:10is this the time is this the time?
- 25:12And you know, I think at some point you're going to have to
- 25:15see What the young guys have? If you're noticing, you know,
- 25:20number one, you're obviously having some depth concerns.
- 25:23Number two, if they're still inconsistency, with the play of
- 25:28your veterans, you know, you still want to at that point.
- 25:32If you're getting inconsistent play from your veterans, then,
- 25:35let's see what the young guys can do.
- 25:36See if they give you a little bit more upside.
- 25:38You know, despite probably there being some growing pains with
- 25:41them playing with that process. Absolutely.
- 25:44And that's what we're going to kind of talk about.
- 25:46Here tonight is kind of look at the number of rooms but I'm
- 25:48going to start with the quarterback room and you know,
- 25:51you know Grant Wells. You know, I mean it wasn't a
- 25:56terrible game by any means, but it wasn't the game that you're
- 25:59going to need playing UNC. You know, that's Yeah and the
- 26:07thing I've kind of said things that I've looked at with Wells
- 26:10is that he does enough things, okay?
- 26:14But he still, he still at the point where was leaving yards on
- 26:19the field and you know I get it with some of the deep balls, a
- 26:23deep balls, not the easiest play to make but some of the the more
- 26:28short to intermediate routes either either locking onto your
- 26:31primary for too long and not getting to the secondary.
- 26:33That's open you know, missing guys that are Opening, you know
- 26:37against UNC. He didn't get a lot of help.
- 26:39There is several drops drops. Yeah, and things that, you know,
- 26:43contributed to, you know, the day that Wells would out there.
- 26:48But I'll say this, he's not elevating.
- 26:52The play of the guys around him. Yeah.
- 26:55So you know does that mean it's time to pull a guy?
- 26:59I don't know, I think I'm at the point where I don't know if
- 27:05Wells is the answer for the next three years.
- 27:08Like we thought he might be. Yeah, we're not seeing to
- 27:12progressions the progression, as the season goes along and we'll
- 27:15see if he gets there if he continues down the line.
- 27:18But I think I'd like to see a little bit more Brown against
- 27:22Pitt, just to see what we have. See if the command of the
- 27:26offense is different, see if that kind of gives some other
- 27:29guys that other positions of spark, as we kind of Into the
- 27:34middle part of this season. Yep.
- 27:38What are your thoughts man? Well I'm almost to a point where
- 27:44we talked about playing the younger guys, right?
- 27:46I almost think it needs to be a Cascade of that.
- 27:49I think you've got to try playing some younger guys you
- 27:51know because you're all mentioned chaplain.
- 27:53They really want to get chaplain and Braylon some more time to
- 27:56play and we got rather than one game but that Cascade effect of
- 28:00what if you start, what if the Run game gets a little bit
- 28:03better? What if some of the younger
- 28:07receivers, get a little more rest?
- 28:09Start making bigger plays, you get Malachi Thomas back.
- 28:12Potentially so to me, I think it's like this, this timeframe
- 28:17where in between pit and NC State, Make some other changes.
- 28:22And if I say n c-- State, Grant hasn't changed his level of play
- 28:28Then those last four games. But Jason Brown Blake.
- 28:31Let Lisa Braun Play. It's wasn't going to hurt.
- 28:33We're likely going to be looking for another portal quarterback,
- 28:37which I know is something we probably didn't want to do, but
- 28:40you got to move on and we're going to talk about the Portland
- 28:44a little while here but you know, yeah, we're valuation
- 28:49period, this point where we're trying to see what we have and I
- 28:54think part of that is not just okay, well we're evaluating
- 28:58Grant, we obviously know that but it's hard when Grant
- 29:02struggling to also evaluate some of the other guys You know,
- 29:07potentially Brown might be a stabilizing factor in that.
- 29:10I don't think he, I don't think he has the upside.
- 29:13That grand does not fall. I mean.
- 29:16And I said that in the offseason.
- 29:17Yeah. I mean, we kind of know that
- 29:21there are limitations with putting Brown in there.
- 29:24But would he help us more in? Some of the things we're Grant
- 29:30is deficient right now? That's the question.
- 29:32We don't really have an answer to yet.
- 29:34Could he maximize other? Is on the field and other parts
- 29:38of the offense that help those guys improve.
- 29:41And we don't know until the actually play significant reps,
- 29:44which is going to be interesting to see how it goes with the last
- 29:48seven games. Now, something I'm really glad
- 29:51we had Coast Rudolph on in. This is our second talking
- 29:53point, you know, the offensive line, it wasn't, you know, one
- 29:59hit on all cylinders and you know, coach Rudolph talked about
- 30:03guys, pressing the eyes, you know, if you're dry Rising
- 30:07moving and things like that. You know we're under three of
- 30:10carry against a UNC defense that had not been very good and we
- 30:15talked about we talked about is it time to let the young guys
- 30:22come in and play? And you know he and luckily he
- 30:26kind of said it for us and Brian.
- 30:29Do you think it is time for those two young guys that he's
- 30:31mentioned, you know, bringing more and Xavier Chapman.
- 30:36Is it time to Give them some run, just to see if it can
- 30:40create potentially a spark on the offensive line.
- 30:44I think so it at least in some sort of capacity.
- 30:48I don't know if you necessarily roll them out as the starters
- 30:51and give them the full game, but I think it'll be good to get
- 30:57them in at least for a handful of series each potentially
- 31:02started this week with pit. That'll that'll kind of be a
- 31:04trial by fire which we're going to talk about in a little bit in
- 31:08terms of what they do up front. But you know as we keep moving
- 31:13forward I think it's To be important to, to get those guys.
- 31:18Some, some additional time in the game, especially the, to
- 31:24we've mentioned, Braylon more is a viewer chaplain, especially
- 31:28when a guy like, you know, we've talked about the many struggles
- 31:33that Parker Clements has had in the season and the fact that you
- 31:38know that Xavier Chaplin is going to have to be one of the
- 31:40guys going into next year, you know, those two Actors alone, I
- 31:45think and can be a good justification for getting him
- 31:48out there. Especially, you know, a guy that
- 31:50is, you know, a true freshman. Just just coming into fall Camp.
- 31:54The fact that he's absorbed enough for, he's on that cusp
- 31:57right now. That says a lot about him and
- 31:59what his future is with this team.
- 32:01But you also can't teach what he has and Coach Ford.
- 32:04All said he is a mountain, he's six foot six, he's 340 pounds.
- 32:07He is a, he's a monster, he's a monkey movement and he moved and
- 32:12he can jump. Holy God that Duncan All right,
- 32:16so if you're going forward now you can you can make this the
- 32:20rest of the season. You can say, we're going to try
- 32:22this for four games. What would be your preferred 5?
- 32:25What would you like to see? I think I'd like to see it.
- 32:30Keep silence that left? Give me Braylon Johnny, Caden
- 32:36and then Xavier, right. I think that'll give us the
- 32:40best. Chance that the best combination
- 32:44of talent versus building towards what we're going to look
- 32:47like next year, because we know that both more brothers are
- 32:51going to be in the mix next year.
- 32:53We know the chapel is going to be in the mix next year and then
- 32:57you keep your two veterans that are going to be out of
- 33:00Eligibility at the end of this year.
- 33:02And there is to kind of hold the unit together.
- 33:04Yep. In ones on the left side, with
- 33:06one of the younger guys. And then more, you know, Chapel
- 33:11on the right side with Lesser of the experience that's cattle
- 33:14where you maybe get a little shaky, but I think things have
- 33:18got to change. I think you gotta we were
- 33:20talking about the gelling and all that going on.
- 33:23Eventually one does it come to a point?
- 33:25When, okay things aren't gelling is it just the group's, not
- 33:29going to gel on the field and as much as they care, which is good
- 33:35to hear. You know, I have a feeling that
- 33:38if they didn't care, I don't think we'd heard that come out
- 33:40of Coach results mouth because So there's no reason to say
- 33:44that, so, yeah, so it'll be interesting going forward with
- 33:49the offensive line and with the and he was talking about, it's
- 33:53little things, right? It's these little things that
- 33:57kind of add up and he was talking about pressing and
- 34:00talking about playing playing not to make a mistake, is still,
- 34:05it's never a winning strategy. If you're not playing with that
- 34:08confidence and that it's overthinking.
- 34:12It's so many things that kind of come into play that can hinder
- 34:16you as an offensive lineman and because because you are having
- 34:19to work as a unit and as a group and there's so much of what you
- 34:23do that impacts, what other people are able to do on a given
- 34:27play call. Yeah.
- 34:29And so you know if you don't have all of that working in a
- 34:34full tandem with the right mindset, then there's going to
- 34:38be in consistencies and struggles and that's what we've
- 34:40seen. Exactly.
- 34:42All right, let's flip and talk a little bit about the defensive
- 34:44side of the ball. Couple things there.
- 34:46And we'll wrap up with a few more places that we're seeing.
- 34:50We felt the secondary was the strongest part of this team and
- 34:54Saturday, what we've been hearing all year deaths in
- 34:58issued Epson issue will death against the best passing team.
- 35:02We faced all year reared. Its ugly head and bit Us in the
- 35:05ass in with Dorian strong out and then Jalen strumming out on
- 35:10that first base. Glee our strongest unit against
- 35:14against against the best quarterback and probably some of
- 35:18the best skill position players, not having the two it showed.
- 35:21And it showed quick, in that first half. you know, but but I
- 35:28cannot not having strobing not having strong and, you know, It
- 35:33was the strongest unit against the best quarterback.
- 35:35And it showed that we're not quite there depth wise, but it
- 35:39was good to get get some extra time for DJ.
- 35:45Yeah. For Mansoor for cam, they were
- 35:49able to come in like moment, didn't look for big to Big,
- 35:53especially for Delaney. Delaney, look down.
- 35:55Belonged out there. Yes, you did DJ.
- 35:59You okay? And all three of them.
- 36:03Hold up very well. So I think the future is bright
- 36:05at the position but, you know, damn, along with me, Devon.
- 36:12Yeah, I mean, that's probably your starter well.
- 36:16Yeah, that's probably your starters next year with strong.
- 36:19So yeah, it shows really good and again menasor showed like
- 36:23right out the gate with that tackle for loss and then a
- 36:26couple good coverage plays. Yeah.
- 36:30But when it rears its ugly head against a team of that caliber
- 36:33and the weight reg, man, he's playing right now Drake, make a
- 36:36five-star Realty there is I'd I don't think we did.
- 36:42I don't think we downplay them last week when we previewed in,
- 36:46I mean. But the two things that I can
- 36:48critique him on our Things that don't really impact him that
- 36:52much, especially if you don't get a rush on it.
- 36:55I mean his footwork still needs, you know, some polishing and he
- 36:59needs to not take unnecessary hits that.
- 37:03That's, that's the to critiques this game.
- 37:05Other than that, I mean shoot dude is in his bag right now, he
- 37:14absolutely is. All right, let's flip almost
- 37:16talk about up front again and then about the The depth front
- 37:20kind of hurting because I mean to say when I when we were at 24
- 37:27with less than you know, nine minutes still left in the third
- 37:30quarter. Eventually couple minutes later,
- 37:33the wheels fell off, the depth fell out and the floodgates kind
- 37:38of open to get it to 41, completely out of range and
- 37:42something in coach Prime mention it.
- 37:43I'm called portion of interviews not playing common football you
- 37:47know you're down 14. If you can go out and get a
- 37:50score to open half, right? Is a seven-point game.
- 37:54They've got to press a little bit more.
- 37:56They didn't have to press and once we didn't do anything with
- 37:58the second drive, it was just kind of like all right.
- 38:01We can we can we can take risks. They did they scored 17 in the
- 38:06prophet like that opening drive of the second half.
- 38:10I mean there was some promise there, there was some yeah, some
- 38:14calls I think early that went the way we wanted to and then we
- 38:17kind of got in that That kind of short yardage situation that
- 38:22we've seen some struggles in this year.
- 38:25We weren't able to convert we needed to and but you know
- 38:30flipping it when that happens that puts so much strain on the
- 38:34on the defensive depth. So you know just like in the DB
- 38:37room we saw it along the defensive line.
- 38:41You know, we saw Nelson McCray Pinette I mean they get back out
- 38:47there they're making they're getting You guys in and out of
- 38:51that, that rotation, it's kind of hard to get pressure.
- 38:54And when you got guys banged and you're already struggling to get
- 38:58a little bit of pressure on the guy and he's a guy, you have to
- 39:01get pressure on to really impact, you know, it's just it's
- 39:06a feast back there, he was ashamed.
- 39:07What it kind of picked guys off any was.
- 39:10And and those three guys we've been we've been, we've been
- 39:13happy with this year but again where it shows when you start
- 39:16playing better offenses you. It shows that they're all three
- 39:21young. They're all three.
- 39:23You know, mcrea feels like he's old mccrae's only affect a
- 39:26redshirt freshman, they've only been playing, you know, they all
- 39:30may have 20 games between them. So, in the reality of things,
- 39:35they're still young. I mean, I think it's okay,
- 39:37what's happening? I think them getting rubs
- 39:39against Elite offenses and seeing how quick things are
- 39:43happening in front of them, that take its put on Sunday right
- 39:47Ron. Now here's what we got.
- 39:49Better. This is where we've got to work
- 39:50better. But I think now from defensively
- 39:53because of where we are, is I think we've got a strategically
- 39:56start thinking about letting some of the guys play the four
- 40:00games. Now anybody Pops, I think you
- 40:03burn a red. Sure.
- 40:04I don't care because the more tape and the more play you get
- 40:07with them it's going to help long run like right now Malachi
- 40:10Madison. Malachi has got the body, right?
- 40:14If nothing else, he's going to be difficult.
- 40:17Even even is an experience as he is.
- 40:22I've got three or ten pounds. That's still is difficult for
- 40:26even the most technician and strong offensive lineman to
- 40:29move. Give him his three games.
- 40:31Think about stretch Carol, do they?
- 40:33Give Gunner, Givens, get them and prize mention it, let them
- 40:37play because if you're letting them play at least it's the
- 40:40film, right? Brian?
- 40:41It's the teaching moments. Are you lined up here?
- 40:44You went here, you should have went this one.
- 40:45Look at your footwork and I know that they can learn something
- 40:50from the process. And you might, you know, find a
- 40:52guy that can give you a boost in the short term.
- 40:55Yeah. So, I mean, I'd love to see that
- 40:58happen and it's got to be done strategically because by all
- 41:01means, if, you know, like this weekend against Pitt, something
- 41:04fluky happens, and we're in that game like, yeah, it's going to
- 41:08be tough to put them in in those situations, right?
- 41:11Just meet up to put them in if it's like a.
- 41:13I don't know that I'll make my prediction in about an hour
- 41:16here, but if you know if it's a 2121 game late, It's really
- 41:22tough to go. So we're going to put in for
- 41:23freshmen to play this series. Yeah, but you still trying to
- 41:26win a game. If there's other points in the
- 41:31within the game you can put them in to get that experience, do
- 41:33it. But I think they have to look to
- 41:34these next seven games getting those guys that have reps
- 41:39running back room. I thought we had Malachi coming
- 41:41back. Obviously, he's closer than he's
- 41:44ever been, he's on the depth chart this week, King still
- 41:47solid hit. Nine carries 50, some yard from
- 41:51a couple, good ones. And you continuing to show the
- 41:55good traits, where that I'm right there.
- 41:59Those three have eligibility to come back next year, that all
- 42:02three of them, it would be, it would be king style year,
- 42:04Thomason pricer, Young Bucks, I think.
- 42:08You've already burned Bryce, right?
- 42:10You might as well make it part of the game playing every week.
- 42:14yeah, I mean especially I think with when you get Malachi back
- 42:18at Full Steam, I think that's when you start seeing holsten's
- 42:24carries kind of move further and further down the depth chart.
- 42:30Because they kind of have similar skill sets in terms of
- 42:35being competent, between the tackles big enough to kind of
- 42:39get some first downs, you know about by running people over if
- 42:43they can wear as king and Duke or kind of more little more
- 42:48under sized. Yeah shifting.
- 42:50So yeah. So I think that's the
- 42:53opportunity and I think that's when you start seeing Holston
- 42:55kind of slip down the depth chart a little bit further.
- 42:58We're seeing it. Also in game, I mean, Holston
- 43:01only had two carries all mom. He only had two carries, I
- 43:05couldn't give you a snap number. I know he was out there and some
- 43:08of the passengers situations. He was out there in passing
- 43:10situation because he's a ghost walker.
- 43:12He is, he is So, you know, we'll see how that goes wide receiver
- 43:22tight in room for unjust just as we pop it on the screen here.
- 43:26You know. We'll talk about that kind of
- 43:30blumrich. I mean yeah, we haven't seen him
- 43:32kind of designed into the offense as much as I think.
- 43:36We wanted to see him. He hasn't been the kind of
- 43:40primary guy. The do it all guy that we
- 43:42thought we were going to get when the season started.
- 43:44He's worked in here or there. Given us some some quality snaps
- 43:50but he is absolutely is not working as a primary component
- 43:57of the offense at this point, but somebody that we did finally
- 44:01get to see and look at it out, do it, do it, you know, you're
- 44:05so happy about this Daquan right.
- 44:08Hey Kwon, right, y'all don't know who this guy takes me?
- 44:13I think that first play and it's like, see I've been right?
- 44:17First of all, I don't tape and he did look good.
- 44:20He much like you said, man, sort of Lanie belonged out there
- 44:23Daquan right? And looked like he belongs out
- 44:25there on Saturday against UNC, I mean, 100%.
- 44:31I mean, he had four catches 31 yards, He got in the zones, he
- 44:37beat some guys off the off the ball.
- 44:41And, you know, that's what you want and now they have to make
- 44:45the decision, right? Yeah.
- 44:47Do you go ahead and just say, you know, screw it.
- 44:51What are you burning? Yeah, I mean I think it's going
- 44:57to depend on if we see kind of a similar output this week, if
- 45:00he's, if he's involved in the game plan, if he continues to
- 45:03kind of show that progress if he's helping you, you gotta go
- 45:06ahead and burn it because it's going to help him for next year
- 45:10too, because it's only going to give him some more
- 45:12opportunities. He's taking over that Drake
- 45:15role. He's taking after April next
- 45:17year and probably with a lot more Fanfare than Drake's
- 45:21playing this year. Well, he's probably going to
- 45:23take over. He's going to be doing what
- 45:25Drake's doing and doing some of what Connors doing.
- 45:29So he's going to kind of be a little bit of jack-of-all-trades
- 45:32come next year. So getting him out there where
- 45:35he can kind of do a little bit of this little bit of that, that
- 45:38that's only going to help us going into next year.
- 45:41And if and if he still, if he shows out again, like he did
- 45:44this week, you know, 25 plus yards, you know, three or four
- 45:49receptions. I mean, that's some quality work
- 45:52for a tight end especially one, you know, true freshman.
- 45:56Just just got to camp in the fall.
- 45:59So we'll see if he can make some more ground up.
- 46:02I tell you the thing, I haven't seen a lot of, you know, getting
- 46:08a lot of Buzz out of fall campus Holloway and we haven't really
- 46:10seen him get much Run. Is it time to kind of work him
- 46:14into the receiver rotation? Some of these other guys, maybe
- 46:19and that's the whole thing. I think at the point that you
- 46:21can start taking those risks, it's your two and three, you're
- 46:25not familiar enough for and one you're not trying to you know we
- 46:29there's is there a bowl possibilities out there?
- 46:30Yeah, weird things happen, but it's, you know, again, finding
- 46:35who's going to be that guy, maybe Holloway is the next guy
- 46:39that you see out there get some run.
- 46:41Um, I'm gonna go to linebacker room real quick and I'm going to
- 46:45make this statement. Aunt, I know Dax is a leader,
- 46:48the linebacker group and I know Dax is a big figure in Virginia
- 46:53Tech football since 2000 and really 16 And he's hooked
- 46:58through, you love him for. He plays with passion, he plays
- 47:01with hard, he plays with fire, But sometimes we hold him on the
- 47:06field, just a little bit too long.
- 47:08When the matchup isn't, right? When they started carrying him
- 47:11up the seen numerous times and they beat him, you got it, you
- 47:17got to just cut it off and say, hey, they're taking him out of
- 47:20what he does. Best those intermediate zones
- 47:22and deep zones, that's not his game short.
- 47:25Any time they saw us and cover to, they were picking on decks,
- 47:27they were picking on Dax. And what I'm saying with this
- 47:31linebacker group, we have right now between Jenkins.
- 47:33Walker Lawson McDonald. All these young men that more
- 47:37athletic guys than bags. You've got to go ahead and mix
- 47:41it up and again, I think that's something we saw with Johnson.
- 47:44Last week is, all right, we're at the point now, start mixing
- 47:49find your nickel next year. Yeah, I don't know who the mics
- 47:53going to be next year. I think, I really think just
- 47:57from prai discussing it. I think Brent problems, Jaden
- 48:01Keller to me the mic. And I think Johnson is going to
- 48:06fight him for it. I think that is going to be next
- 48:09spring, roughly eight months from now that do that, right?
- 48:14Yeah, no, no. Seven months from that my months
- 48:18or six months from now spring next year, I think math is hard.
- 48:21Yes, it is hard after having a pounding headache, this
- 48:24afternoon. Yes.
- 48:25Math is very hard, but I think that's going to be a such an
- 48:30intriguing position and I think right now You know, the next
- 48:34couple of weeks not you don't have it's not going to be
- 48:38worried about as much but I think we get to NC State.
- 48:41I think NC State's going to try to take advantage of that acts
- 48:46completely. Yeah.
- 48:47And we'll all say this when we talk about you know taking
- 48:50advantage of that cover two and knowing that Dax has to get kind
- 48:54of that deep deep middle. Not very many quarterbacks at
- 49:01the college level can recognize that make that throw true.
- 49:07So you know this isn't an every week type deal but at the same
- 49:13time we still do have some good quarterbacks on our schedule.
- 49:17Remaining that can take advantage of that.
- 49:21But yeah, I'm with you. I think, I think he like Keller.
- 49:25I think that in terms of next year, taking over for Mike, I
- 49:28think it's between Keller and Johnson.
- 49:30I think Johnson probably has. It seems like has the
- 49:35understanding of the defense down a little bit better, but I
- 49:39think he likes Keller's physical traits better.
- 49:43Yeah. So, I think the combination of
- 49:46to Ken Keller, pick it up where he, where he can call the
- 49:49defense? You can can be that Communicator
- 49:54for the defense that I think that's another big, big piece to
- 49:57watch going through the rest of this year and into the start of
- 50:00next year, but you can mix it right now, right?
- 50:05But you can make it here. You can make.
- 50:06We see that mean we the depth. The depth chart is special.
- 50:09I mean we'll we'll has been a rotating cast of characters the
- 50:14entire season so far in terms of the depth chart you know, we've
- 50:19seen Keller at the top of that. List we've seen Lawson at the
- 50:21top of the list, we've seen. Yeah, I don't at the top of the
- 50:24list, it's kind of been I think they're still kind of figuring
- 50:29out the balance I think sometimes it's still being
- 50:32dictated by opponent. So there's that that aspect as
- 50:37well. So yep, as we get further along,
- 50:41we'll see if any guy emerges at that position and obviously, you
- 50:48know, depending on the eligibility.
- 50:50He still got Tisdale in there as well that could be a factor.
- 50:56I don't think at this point that we're going to get that resolved
- 51:00this season but he'll know we're not a discussion potentially
- 51:03next year. So yeah.
- 51:05That's going to be an interesting room to watch.
- 51:09All right, so we're gonna put that to bed and we're kind of
- 51:13putting to bed you and see at what that right there because
- 51:17the next two things, we're going to talk about even though some
- 51:20of its On UNC. It's a little bit more towards
- 51:23looking to the Future and trying to have people calling them.
- 51:28A lot of chatter about Boeing's not cut for this.
- 51:33This scheme isn't good. Etc, etc, etc.
- 51:36Brian. I know you saw it.
- 51:37We had a chat about it and Brian decided just to look at some
- 51:41extra tape other than what he's seeing during watching the game
- 51:44live Brian's a junkie on football.
- 51:47Y'all, y'all don't understand. Us to the point.
- 51:53Well we're all sports Joan. You that probably listen to this
- 51:56prize. Now going 50/50 stack in front
- 51:58of him. There in the man cave and as he
- 52:00said can watch football, we can keep the family happy.
- 52:03So I know you're doing a lot more breakdowns.
- 52:05But let's talk about the scheme because I know there were times
- 52:09again you got frustrated on Saturday where there was he had
- 52:12scheme somebody wide open and we did middle.
- 52:16Yeah. And kind of the thing that like
- 52:19kind of putting a big bone it. I don't think we're under
- 52:22playing relative to our talent but we also aren't doing a good
- 52:26job of maximizing the scheme relative to that Talent right
- 52:30now. So there's yards kind of all
- 52:32over the field that we're missing.
- 52:34Whether it's Executioner, by the quarterback, drop bowls, you
- 52:41know, missing a block, not quite getting to a block, you know,
- 52:44something that turns a, you know, 88-yard gain into a 1 or 2
- 52:50yard game because somebody didn't quite get to their spot.
- 52:53Somebody took a bad angle body, let somebody across their face.
- 52:58I mean, there's just these little things and I know I get
- 53:01that. Some people are frustrated with
- 53:03the calls and the scheme, I like the scheme, the scheme.
- 53:06Is good, the front, the where I have a frustration in.
- 53:08This is mostly looking at Bowens relative inexperience, as a
- 53:15power five. Play caller, not changing in
- 53:19rotating Personnel, sooner often enough and I'd like to see some
- 53:26development or refinement to kind of bridge the gap with
- 53:30these shortcomings week-to-week. The things that he is struggling
- 53:36with the The most is is those adjustments and then not having
- 53:41kind of an extra wrinkle or a big new wrinkle week-to-week
- 53:46that kind of throws off the opposing defense something that
- 53:50they don't have tape on yet. You know, that, that's the kind
- 53:53of things that I think is where he's not quite not quite hit his
- 53:59stride yet in some of that, especially with the latter might
- 54:01just be, we're not doing enough of our bread-and-butter stuff
- 54:05good yet. That I'm not trying to throw
- 54:07more at them week to week. Yeah, so it's so it's again
- 54:13that's why I wanted Brian to speak to it again.
- 54:17I still like the scheme. I still think he's scheming
- 54:21people open. I think from what you told me.
- 54:23There were people open, we're just not getting there and it's
- 54:26kind of goes back to Grand and again, another knock on Grant.
- 54:28We're not trying to bury the guy here, but Brian you said it, you
- 54:33said it since week one, he locks onto that first receiver.
- 54:36When a lot of times it's the second read.
- 54:39It's getting open that if you got off of that guy quicker,
- 54:44there's a guy Wide Open Door and not a relatively easy throw, but
- 54:48they throw you can complete and get your quick.
- 54:52Yeah. And like I said, you know he
- 54:53needs to get some help from his receivers.
- 54:55There was a lot of drop balls. I know it was a little bit of a
- 54:58slick situation out there from time to time but well Misty yeah
- 55:02you know you got to grab those the other team did not struggle
- 55:06with with drops the way we did. So absolutely there's only so
- 55:10much. You can blame on the conditions
- 55:12there. So you got you got to help your
- 55:14quarterback out. If it's your quarterback as to
- 55:16understand and work within the framework of the scheme and get
- 55:20through those Scenes where he can get the ball to the guy that
- 55:24is coming, open in the offense. And I know another thing we
- 55:29talked about this a lot on the sidelines on the on the
- 55:32timeline, someone was saying, you know, check with me, they
- 55:39hate the check with me. And I kept saying right back to
- 55:44him if we can get into a rhythm and we can go Tempo.
- 55:47You're going to see less check with me but we can't right now
- 55:51we're not we're not dictating to the defense and we're not
- 55:54dictating to the defense then scheme matters more and so
- 55:59you're going to see a lot more check with me so we get in the
- 56:01best possible situation for that down in distance.
- 56:05There we go. All right for we jump over to
- 56:08pit we're going to take a look at a few kind of college
- 56:10football news. Oops.
- 56:12Obviously one that probably caught this fan bases.
- 56:15I more than anybody speaking of Robbie comfortable.
- 56:19We're talking about Joe, Robbie kind of kind of going back to my
- 56:22point there. Rebecca Sutter.
- 56:25Can't get the bread and butter. Right?
- 56:26Why? I had a wrinkle, there you go.
- 56:29Alright. But loan using notes, big one.
- 56:31That called. Every Hokies fans eyes was
- 56:34Devon. Ford no longer with Penn State
- 56:36team sounds like he is preserving his Red shirt and
- 56:41essentially will enter the portal.
- 56:42We are on now that the 45-day portal timeline, I mean, I'm
- 56:49pretty sure Brent Pride probably had a hand in recruiting Because
- 56:51he was up in Northern Virginia. So as far as you know, let's
- 56:55make the running back room bigger.
- 56:57Let's make the running back room, bigger.
- 57:02I mean, you know, I have no big problem with With us pursuing
- 57:09that because we need Frontline Talent across the board.
- 57:14I mean, there's not a position group.
- 57:17We're more than a handful of starters where you feel are.
- 57:24Absolutely absolutely locked in rock-solid couldn't be pressed
- 57:29by anybody else that you can get in the portal.
- 57:32So I think that's where you mean, you got to explore your
- 57:34options running back is probably not a need position but we could
- 57:39definitely upgrade the position I think and create more depth.
- 57:43Are I mean, you look at a team like, like pit that we're about
- 57:47to talk about. Out that, you know, they only
- 57:49got two healthy right now, but they've got essentially, three
- 57:53starting caliber running backs. Yep.
- 57:56And so, I mean, we and we've had that in our past, you know,
- 58:00looking back in at 2009 and 2010.
- 58:04So I mean, we understand, we understand the the ability to
- 58:10run three NFL caliber running backs out there.
- 58:14Yeah, it's And well we didn't ever run them correctly out
- 58:19there. Don't get me into that.
- 58:21When you have Evan Williams and somehow, we did not manage to
- 58:26have like a top 15 offense with three NFL running backs,
- 58:29multiple NFL wide receivers and if L quarterback, you want to
- 58:33get it. Let's go into 2009 episode 2010
- 58:36and get me, fired up. All right, we'll keep moving.
- 58:40We gotta roll here. All right, call the real out of
- 58:42Colorado, I don't think that's a shocker.
- 58:44I mean, literally, the worst team in P5.
- 58:46Both sides of the All know shot there but the shock one came
- 58:50Sunday night Paul Chris out at Wisconsin, Paul Chris basically
- 58:58I mean he's had it's not been a great start to this season, the
- 59:01guy's been there, six years. He's went to three BCS Bowls.
- 59:06He went 13 and 11 year. He won, you know, double-digit
- 59:10games four times, his too bad game, his too bad seasons were
- 59:14eight and nine. I'm I'm in one of those.
- 59:20One of those is worse. Year was the covid ear.
- 59:23There she I don't count the covid you, okay.
- 59:25I don't count that. You look at everything.
- 59:27On the thing around, I mean back in 2001.
- 59:31The 2013 20 they went 13 in one. The only loss was to Ohio State
- 59:38They lost of them by 6. And if it's one of these things
- 59:43where you if Wisconsin fired him, well, he can't get us over
- 59:46the top. There's not many people to get
- 59:49you over the top but now you're taking the guy who could
- 59:51potentially get you in a few years into the playoff run every
- 59:55year and you're firing him and I'm not knocking Jim Leonard.
- 59:59Jim Learners a hell of a defensive coordinator.
- 1:00:02But I mean if we need a special assistant to the head coach next
- 1:00:06year I'm hoping Joe there's a relationship there that we could
- 1:00:13fall still good man. Let's hope maybe you know we
- 1:00:17still need some death on the offensive line for next year
- 1:00:19too. So we'll see if any of those
- 1:00:21guys. Maybe they didn't take kindly to
- 1:00:24it. Let's hope that offensive
- 1:00:25lineman. Did take kindly to Fire and Paul
- 1:00:27crisp up. Yeah.
- 1:00:31Yeah. I'll be fine with that.
- 1:00:33I'll be fine with it. One last piece of news here in
- 1:00:38this is sort of hits close to us.
- 1:00:45This guy played at UVA, is name is Tyrone.
- 1:00:47Davis, if you're where we from Halifax County Virginia.
- 1:00:53Tyrone Davis has one of the three Sports guides that came
- 1:00:57through our high school. Tyrone went to UVA, he broke
- 1:01:01Herman, Moore is record. And I know these UVA guy and
- 1:01:04some people like what the hell you talking about this guy?
- 1:01:06He's from our hometown in was probably the greatest football
- 1:01:09player that ever came through. That he played seven years in
- 1:01:11the league. Any passed away today.
- 1:01:17And, you know, for us, he was just a little bit like we were
- 1:01:23forward. Five years old, he was playing
- 1:01:25before our team won state championship, but I wanted to
- 1:01:29mention it because again, there's a big three that came
- 1:01:33through Halifax. Tyrone was one, he played
- 1:01:35multiple years in the NFL, he was a D1 college stud.
- 1:01:40Terry Davis. Who it felt like played forever
- 1:01:44in the NBA in Germany and when I read it passed away, it kind of
- 1:01:49broke my heart a little bit and I know Brian you played more
- 1:01:53organized football and I know he was around back then and it's
- 1:01:56one of those things man. Yeah, I mean you know you always
- 1:02:00have those Hometown Heroes that you kind of looked up to and
- 1:02:03respected and you know he was kind of He was that era that
- 1:02:09ushered in the, you know, the best team that Halifax County
- 1:02:14has ever had, he was kind of, he was the Dwight Vic of that
- 1:02:17situation. He kind of laid the groundwork
- 1:02:19and then you know, you reach that height in 1999 so he wasn't
- 1:02:26like that for us and he was there when Fred Palmore was the
- 1:02:31head coach. And then, you know, there was
- 1:02:35there were some gains there. and, you know, I look back and
- 1:02:41like I said, he was one of the guys that we were kind of We
- 1:02:47point to say, okay, well they came from here, you know, when
- 1:02:51you're from Halifax County, small school relative to a lot
- 1:02:55of the teams that we were playing at the time and
- 1:02:58definitely one of the more rural schools in those districts.
- 1:03:04You know, you kind of look to guys like that and say, hey if
- 1:03:07he can make it out, if he can do those big things, you know,
- 1:03:09maybe I can too. So really sad, really, really,
- 1:03:14really, really That situation, but prayers, and thoughts to his
- 1:03:20family and to the community. Absolutely.
- 1:03:25All right, before we get into Know, The Enemy pit.
- 1:03:27We're going to take a quick pause from our digital Partners
- 1:03:31so now we move on to pit and we go too.
- 1:03:36Well, Heinz Field. It's also me Heinz Field.
- 1:03:39I don't care what the new name Max for sure Stadium Hans and we
- 1:03:44take a look at At the Pitt Panthers coming off.
- 1:03:48A loss to Georgia Tech, which I didn't.
- 1:03:51I know that game was only a cc Network.
- 1:03:53I'm here, in the cave. Saturday night, we're watching a
- 1:03:55movie, I got games going on, and I got somebody texting me, like,
- 1:04:00my cousin from South Carolina. Text me like, he'll spit doing
- 1:04:03Georgia Tech. And I was, like, what the hell
- 1:04:05do you mean? I look down, and it's like,
- 1:04:07they're winning is like, what the hell?
- 1:04:10Yep, I agree with that, Robbie 100%.
- 1:04:12All right, so we're going to look at them.
- 1:04:14I'm going to start. Let's talk.
- 1:04:15Kieron slow is the quarterback. He is a USC transfer to pit when
- 1:04:24he came out in 2019. He was a three star quarterback,
- 1:04:30go to USC. If you don't recall, he did take
- 1:04:33over the starting job from another guy.
- 1:04:34We saw this year, JT Daniels, where he had a really good 2019
- 1:04:38season where he threw for 30 touchdowns nine interceptions so
- 1:04:41far this season been kind of steady Eddie right at 1,000
- 1:04:44yards, five five TVs to pics. What are we seeing on slovis
- 1:04:52right now? Because this was a kind of a big
- 1:04:53pickup for them on a in the transfer portal this year,
- 1:04:57Braun. Yeah, you know, we're seeing
- 1:05:00some similar things that we saw from him in 2020.
- 1:05:05Sorry, 2021 with the was slovis there.
- 1:05:08He's a pro ready in terms of his accuracy and pocket awareness,
- 1:05:13really good at reading defenses and pretty regularly.
- 1:05:16He gets through those progressions, functional
- 1:05:19athleticism, in terms of escaping the pocket, but he
- 1:05:22typically only scrambles the kind of by time to pass or get
- 1:05:25rid of the football. He's not trying to scramble for
- 1:05:27first downs. Like we saw Drake may do last
- 1:05:30week, he has functional arm strength but so you can make all
- 1:05:36the throws but he's not a guy that's going to press it down.
- 1:05:38Feel consistently and he will occasionally lock onto his
- 1:05:42primary read when he's pressured consistent.
- 1:05:45So we can get some pressure on him.
- 1:05:46We can potentially get into situations where he's making
- 1:05:50some bad choices with the football.
- 1:05:52How did he look against the blitz?
- 1:05:54Because I think that's the way you're going to.
- 1:05:55Probably I think we're going to probably have to live and die by
- 1:05:58That the rest of the season? Yeah.
- 1:06:01And I think the way they operate, they are not an air a,
- 1:06:05they're not an RPO. There's some elements that they
- 1:06:07have in their offense but they're more, they're more
- 1:06:10multiple, they're more pro-style.
- 1:06:12We're going to have opportunities if we can slow
- 1:06:14their running game down, where we can get after him and cause
- 1:06:18him some problems. All right, so good deal there
- 1:06:22again. Slow, this is a good
- 1:06:23quarterback. I'm not gonna knock him at that
- 1:06:25whatsoever, but as someone he's not what Kenny Pickett was in
- 1:06:30his 18th year, which you know, now, Kate biggest transition to
- 1:06:34the league, Kenny had a great Sunday, Brian, a no balls of his
- 1:06:39hit the ground. Yeah.
- 1:06:41Fortunately, through her to the other team.
- 1:06:44Yeah, it's one of those. One of those weird games where
- 1:06:48You know you complete everything just you know some of them
- 1:06:51didn't go the right way for you. Yeah.
- 1:06:54All right, let's take a look. Now we're going to look at two
- 1:06:56of their running guys because the first guy we're going to
- 1:06:58talk about here. Israel, Abaddon.
- 1:07:01The conda has been banged up recently, so not sure if we're
- 1:07:05going to see him before. I wanted to take a look at both
- 1:07:08because obviously, we don't talk about one.
- 1:07:11The guy will still show up Israel for Star Prospect when he
- 1:07:17came out in 20 from Brooklyn, New York Abraham, Lincoln High
- 1:07:21School. The number one player, in the
- 1:07:23state of New York and top 200 player on 24/7 and you know so
- 1:07:29far in his career you know, solid numbers you know just
- 1:07:34under 250 attempts right over twelve hundred fifty yards since
- 1:07:392020 had a solid season last year.
- 1:07:43We're going to talk about a second one but let's talk about
- 1:07:45Israel up front. What's he bringing to the Table
- 1:07:49as far as it goes with their running back room.
- 1:07:51Yeah, it is. He's an experienced back with
- 1:07:54really good speed. He's really excellent at hitting
- 1:07:57the home, run when he gets to that second level, great, second
- 1:08:01level Vision, I'd give him only an average grade at the first
- 1:08:06level. He's you'll get in there, but if
- 1:08:10you can stop him at the first level, you're going to kind of
- 1:08:12keep him in check. But if he gets to that second
- 1:08:14level he is a big big Factor. He's not really a threat.
- 1:08:18The receiving game Beyond check Downs.
- 1:08:20They don't do a whole lot with him.
- 1:08:21In the screen game, they don't send him on those wheels or
- 1:08:25anything like that very consistently occasionally, he'll
- 1:08:28flare out, he'll catch something like that, but primarily, he's
- 1:08:31going to be a check down threat in the passing game.
- 1:08:35But again, his big abilities that home run home, run threat,
- 1:08:39when he gets the second and third level the defense.
- 1:08:43And I know we were talking about when we chatted this week.
- 1:08:46You were saying the guy. You feel like it's the best of
- 1:08:49the guy that's currently out in Rodney ham and Junior, but when
- 1:08:52his he got banged up, they brought in Vincent Davis, who's
- 1:08:56getting some more run, a 3 star out of Cardinal, Gibbons High
- 1:09:00School in Fort Lauderdale Florida and the 2019 class.
- 1:09:05What are they showing with Davis?
- 1:09:06Kind of a smaller back at 58 about 175 pounds.
- 1:09:10What's he doing for the pit offense?
- 1:09:12If he's going to be the primary guy, Saturday afternoon, Yeah,
- 1:09:15he's a little bit more steady Eddie in terms of his production
- 1:09:18whereas is he's definitely more of a boom and bust tight back.
- 1:09:21If he's not breaking a big one, usually it's a modest gain.
- 1:09:26Davis could kind of hit off those, you know, 8 to 15 yarders
- 1:09:30a little more consistently and that's mainly because he's more
- 1:09:33of a threat on the edge than he is between the tackles.
- 1:09:36So when he gets, when he gets to the edge, he's getting some
- 1:09:39consistent garbage there and he's kind of a good change of
- 1:09:43back, change of pace. But into what, what is he does?
- 1:09:47Well, and gives a little bit of extra wiggle at the line of
- 1:09:50scrimmage and they do use him a little bit more in the passing
- 1:09:54game than they do ab Anaconda. So you can look for that as
- 1:09:59well. And his role definitely
- 1:10:00increased when when riding Hammond went down and I think
- 1:10:03Hammonds probably the most balanced of the three, he's he's
- 1:10:09really good at kind of getting those those hard yards but he
- 1:10:15Also a guy that when he gets the second level, he can hurt you
- 1:10:18for it for a big run. Yeah.
- 1:10:20And Vincent Davis, the last two games which was against Rhode
- 1:10:25Island and obviously the loss against Georgia Tech.
- 1:10:28You know, 22 carries 131 yards on the ground with a touchdown.
- 1:10:32You mentioned the receiving threat Brian six, receptions 48
- 1:10:35yards. So obviously it's kind of weird
- 1:10:40to look at those two games but what they were doing is kind of
- 1:10:43balancing and everything. So he does have that Potential
- 1:10:46Threat. I hope he's the guy versus Izzy
- 1:10:52this week or there may be trying to get Izzy back because the one
- 1:10:57thing I don't think we can the team and our team, in general
- 1:11:01can't hold. Is someone breaking a big one?
- 1:11:03For a touchdown? We saw how much that hurt
- 1:11:05against you and see when they hit, what the the tide in seam
- 1:11:08route and some of the other deeper place.
- 1:11:10So a team that we can keep in front of us, Please we can come
- 1:11:14in front of us, is gonna definitely be big now, talking
- 1:11:17about keeping in front of you, one guy we do need to worry
- 1:11:21about in the outside is Jared Wayne six-foot-three 210-pound.
- 1:11:27He is a big bodied wide receiver so far this year, nineteen
- 1:11:31receptions 354 yards averaging right at 19 perception and when
- 1:11:37he came out Clearwater Florida a very low three star.
- 1:11:41So Something we talked about give put the credit they develop
- 1:11:46guys, they developed guys into being good Collegiate players
- 1:11:49and believe it or not. Primary recruiter remember this
- 1:11:53name? Kevin Sherman, old wide receiver
- 1:11:57coach what are you seeing with him on tape in this?
- 1:12:01He the guy that heat on will lock on.
- 1:12:05Sometimes he is the guy that he will like on often uses him as
- 1:12:12their primary. Receiving threat a and kind of
- 1:12:15as a safety blanket. So he is their primary target,
- 1:12:20mostly it intermediate-range threat a lot of stuff in that 15
- 1:12:25to 25 yard range for him will usually have at least, at least
- 1:12:31125 yard, plus catch a game. So, he will have an occasional
- 1:12:38deep ball. That goes his way that can burn
- 1:12:42us in one play. But he's more of a stick.
- 1:12:45Mover and a mister, real reliable for slovis.
- 1:12:49He's the guy that he's going to look for to kind of move the
- 1:12:52sticks that they're in those third and long and medium
- 1:12:57situations. All right, another name to keep
- 1:13:00an eye on is be kannada, mum failed in the rod receiver room.
- 1:13:05He is leading the team interception as he put a really
- 1:13:08good to put probably his second best game together against
- 1:13:11Georgia Tech. You know, did you see month?
- 1:13:16L don't take this. He is either slot guy.
- 1:13:17Or is he there? Why They move him around but he
- 1:13:22primarily Works underneath. He's a lot of the short stuff,
- 1:13:26okay, makes sense average in right at 10:10 of pop.
- 1:13:29So makes sense. They're all right.
- 1:13:32Ron, you've kind of mentioned it already.
- 1:13:33Let's hear a little bit about Their Own Line in this offensive
- 1:13:36scheme. Yeah.
- 1:13:38It's a multiple pro-style attack, a lot more balance this
- 1:13:43year and then we've seen with Whipple now that we got cignetti
- 1:13:48they're calling the offense They?
- 1:13:54They run the ball a whole lot more than I think we're used to
- 1:13:57from a, from a pit attack. They are more tight in heavy
- 1:14:01than we've seen recently although they don't use them a
- 1:14:04ton As Weapons. There, they're definitely in
- 1:14:06there for blocking they'll use a fullback, they got a heavy
- 1:14:09package with a bringing an extra offensive lineman so they really
- 1:14:13are kind of a little bit more old school in terms of how they
- 1:14:18like to attack a defense and they've got a veteran line that
- 1:14:22can be dominant. Times.
- 1:14:25But they can also be confused and overwhelmed the pressure.
- 1:14:28So I think that's probably how we're going to attack them is
- 1:14:30try to get them kind of off their game by run blitzes and
- 1:14:35bringing some pressure on those long down and distances.
- 1:14:40Yeah. Absolutely.
- 1:14:41They are running a lot more than they had in the past.
- 1:14:45You know, last year they were pretty balanced team this year.
- 1:14:48They're 60/40 against the run so but I think that's who know DZ
- 1:14:53is As though, I think if he sees that he doesn't quite have the
- 1:14:56talent, he'll play his brand of Defense, which you know, we're
- 1:14:59about to talk about here and sort of the cars where they fall
- 1:15:03and that's, that's it's been in the past and we've been the
- 1:15:08beneficiary, that's why they lose some games.
- 1:15:09Sometimes he does get into a conservative shell, but let's
- 1:15:13talk about the defense. And let's talk about kind of the
- 1:15:16man in the middle guy. We talked about, I feel like
- 1:15:18multiple times since we've started this podcast, so, how
- 1:15:22long has he been here? Cerveza, Dennis the six-foot-one
- 1:15:29230-pound linebacker, 2019 Class A to store out of the state of
- 1:15:35New York. They've definitely developed
- 1:15:37into a very solid Collegiate linebacker and what's the tape
- 1:15:43looking like with him run? Yeah, I mean we've seen service
- 1:15:48a dentist now for a while, he does a really good job attacking
- 1:15:52the Gap. He's used heavily in the Blitz
- 1:15:55game. They'll send him up the middle
- 1:15:57to send him off the edge. With some lines.
- 1:15:58Stunts does a good job of using his hands to shed blockers and
- 1:16:03is great in Pursuit. He can get picked on and
- 1:16:07coverage though. Especially when he's in the zone
- 1:16:09he looks really really hesitant. A lot of times when he's in zone
- 1:16:13coverage, when he's able to get a kind of more single In man
- 1:16:17coverage he does a little bit better.
- 1:16:18He does have that athleticism but he looks a little lost in
- 1:16:22zone from time to time. And with that being said, you
- 1:16:26know, he can get influence with some misdirection, some window
- 1:16:29dressing and things like that, that'll get him out of position.
- 1:16:34All right. Yeah.
- 1:16:35Now as far as it goes, he is, you know, one of their better
- 1:16:39tacklers, you know, the guys already got 38 tackles and, you
- 1:16:44know, five games for tackles for Lost some sacks.
- 1:16:48What are those sacks of those sacks coverage sex, or are they
- 1:16:51using them on a blitz? You already see?
- 1:16:54Yeah. They just want to blend pretty
- 1:16:55pretty regularly. Yeah.
- 1:16:57Sorry, I'm telling you all. My head is murdering me right
- 1:17:00now. All right, let's flip over next
- 1:17:04guy. You want to talk about as a guy
- 1:17:06at the back end. And that's effort Khalid, the
- 1:17:11the five foot eleven 195-pound defensive back out of Cypress,
- 1:17:14Texas. A three-star when he came out in
- 1:17:182018, and so far this year, you know, 18 tackles couple
- 1:17:25interceptions to fumble, recoveries five pass breakups.
- 1:17:31They using them a lot in zone brown, or they kind of mix and
- 1:17:33matching with him. Mix-and-match he's really good
- 1:17:37at man coverage though in you know when they're bringing those
- 1:17:41prep, those pressures, a lot of times you will get locked up in
- 1:17:44man coverage usually on the tight end.
- 1:17:47Sorry on the slot opposite, the tight end and he's really good
- 1:17:50at diagnosing and attacking the short stuff behind the line of
- 1:17:55scrimmage. Passing game things like that.
- 1:17:57He'll get in there, get the tackle for loss, not afraid to
- 1:18:02bring a little Lumber. But just like Dennis, he can be
- 1:18:07influence with the play-action, the RPO, the misdirection, when
- 1:18:12he's in zone coverage. So that that's an area where we
- 1:18:14might be able to take advantage when they're not bringing
- 1:18:16pressure. All right, let's go to the
- 1:18:21defensive line. There's one guy that kind of
- 1:18:23caught your, I was expecting to see you put two defensive
- 1:18:27lineman on your run down when you send it over to me.
- 1:18:30But you only put one collage of can't see.
- 1:18:33The 6-foot 275 pound defensive lineman out of Northwestern High
- 1:18:39School in Miami, Florida. A three-star when he came out in
- 1:18:422019 so far this year, 19 tackles seven and a half
- 1:18:47percent. Lost three sacks.
- 1:18:51Where is he? Promised he playing Brian.
- 1:18:53And what is he bringing to the table?
- 1:18:56Yeah, he's primarily the the to eye on this four-man front.
- 1:19:00He brings an elite combination of strength and athleticism
- 1:19:05graded penetrating at the snap sheds, blockers.
- 1:19:08Well, in the Run game has a really great motor as a pass
- 1:19:12rusher, but he does rely a lot on his physical tools when
- 1:19:16rushing the passer. So if you can slow his initial
- 1:19:20Birds, he doesn't really have a secondary move other than just,
- 1:19:24you know, keeping going and eventually trying to work his
- 1:19:27way to the quarterbacks, you know, that's an area where, if
- 1:19:31we can get a, get a good punch, keep our feet moving in front of
- 1:19:34the in front of him. We can potentially slow him down
- 1:19:37a little bit. But you know, I really like what
- 1:19:43he brings to the table. He's going to be a handful for
- 1:19:45sure. Who do you primarily see match?
- 1:19:48That puts him Saturday on our lawn.
- 1:19:51I mean it's going to be a lot of that interior there man is going
- 1:19:55to be Jessie, Jonny and Caden, okay?
- 1:20:01Usually I mean it's going to depend on the strength like I
- 1:20:07said, he's using that to eye rolls, so he'll be Beyond
- 1:20:12Johnny's played a good deal with all those those gaps games where
- 1:20:16he's blocking back against the to.
- 1:20:20I all right. Awesome.
- 1:20:22Let's flip back, let's go back to the secondary for one more
- 1:20:25player. You wanted to talk about and
- 1:20:27that's Brandon Hill, a five foot, eleven hundred ninety five
- 1:20:30pound defensive back another Florida kit, 3 star out of Kiva
- 1:20:36high school and a polka. Florida, 2019 class so far this
- 1:20:42year, we're taking a look at him and we, you know, 32 tackles
- 1:20:49Only one past deflection brine. I am assuming he's the strong
- 1:20:53safety yet. Strong safety.
- 1:20:56Actually the fastest player on the team.
- 1:20:58Okay. Sub for for Speed they got him
- 1:21:04routinely matched up against the tight end or the outside slot
- 1:21:08slot guy in man coverage, really great in Pursuit.
- 1:21:13He covers a lot of ground really quickly he does I will sometimes
- 1:21:18when he's accounted for by a blocker so he doesn't do a good
- 1:21:22job of getting off of blocks very well, especially when it's
- 1:21:25coming from a tight end or a lineman.
- 1:21:29And and he also can be influence with that.
- 1:21:32With that play action, there are P of the misdirection stuff.
- 1:21:36They primarily use him in the Run game and they also will use
- 1:21:41them a lot in the zone. And man, so they mix and match
- 1:21:45them a lot. Again.
- 1:21:46Everybody on this team is going to I have to have to have some,
- 1:21:50some degree of man coverage in their belt because of how much
- 1:21:52pressure they bring. All right, that makes sense.
- 1:21:56Now, when you talk about saying he's covering her, he does well
- 1:21:59covering the tight end and retaining matched up.
- 1:22:02Is it one of those things where he's maybe more playing a shadow
- 1:22:05and just using that athleticism to, they're going to make the
- 1:22:08catch, but when they make the catch, I'm going to turn the
- 1:22:10Jets on get there and get them down.
- 1:22:14Yeah, I mean he does a good job of kind of like I said, closing
- 1:22:17that Gap. He doesn't really do a whole lot
- 1:22:20of Smashing of the Titans. It's usually not in zone.
- 1:22:23It's usually in this man coverage is and he does a good
- 1:22:26job of staying on his man and closing the Gap.
- 1:22:29So you might get the completion, but you're not going to get a
- 1:22:33lot of those yards after the catch.
- 1:22:35Got it. All right.
- 1:22:36Let's do a quick. High level view of the scheme
- 1:22:38here with a patent are doozies. 425 Yeah, I mean, it's attacking
- 1:22:44425. We've seen it for years now.
- 1:22:47It's very familiar to Hokies. You know, they'll be bringing
- 1:22:53pressure consistently especially if we don't establish a run
- 1:22:56game, if they feel like they can tee off on us and make Grant
- 1:23:00Wells have to make a play, that's what they're going to do.
- 1:23:03And they probably will. Yeah, so they pursue really well
- 1:23:08as a unit in the running game and they flow to the point of
- 1:23:11attack very quickly. So, you got to be getting to
- 1:23:15your spot, staying on your blocks because they will flow to
- 1:23:19the ball and create some Havoc there.
- 1:23:22But as I said with the individual players as a team
- 1:23:25defense, they can also be susceptible to play action RPO
- 1:23:28and misdirection. So I imagine that we're going to
- 1:23:31probably have some of that in our pocket this week and since
- 1:23:36they bring pressure a lot they're running a lot of man.
- 1:23:38So we're going to eventually have to have to get some where
- 1:23:41we beat them. 20 yards plus down the field to keep them.
- 1:23:46Honest. Absolutely.
- 1:23:49And they're especially susceptible to that if you know
- 1:23:51the pressure doesn't get home a free order to be sure up front.
- 1:23:55Give Grant a good pocket. That's only going to make it
- 1:23:58harder on the back end for them to hold up in that man coverage.
- 1:24:00Yeah. All right.
- 1:24:01So let's flip it over to know the enemy and the Hokies keys.
- 1:24:04And I think Brian, that's one of the first things we look at,
- 1:24:06right? It's how do we take on the
- 1:24:09pressure? And not only how we take on the
- 1:24:12pressure up front. But can Tyler Bowen, where
- 1:24:15you've seen them scheme, some guys open, can he find the soft
- 1:24:18spots getting find where they're coming from and can grant Wells
- 1:24:22get there? How key is that going to be?
- 1:24:25Because if you tell me, you know, overall pass Pros been
- 1:24:27solid, not spectacular, but very solid, but if we're able to slow
- 1:24:32them up, when they bring the pressure, Is I mean, is this the
- 1:24:37game where Grant Wells is, got to take that step where it
- 1:24:39listen, there's going to be voided areas.
- 1:24:42You've got to know where their boarding, and you've got to get
- 1:24:44it there because we have the opportunity to break Place.
- 1:24:48Yeah. And some of this is going to be
- 1:24:50about understanding, you know, where the where the man coverage
- 1:24:55is and where the mismatch in man coverage is and being able to
- 1:24:59diagnose that before the snap that way.
- 1:25:02If if you know, That you got a mismatch somewhere in, further
- 1:25:09down your progression, you know, you can come off of your primary
- 1:25:13if it's not there, right out the gate and know that you probably
- 1:25:16have a mismatch on your secondary read.
- 1:25:19So, that's that's what you he's gonna have to work on
- 1:25:21identifying this week and that might help him take advantage of
- 1:25:24some of the Yards that we've been leaving out on the field.
- 1:25:27All right, I think another key this week, Brian, and we saw you
- 1:25:31get cleaned up again is penalties.
- 1:25:34You know, the UNC game. I think it was 34 22 and one was
- 1:25:40very early with Silas with the false start but it was overall,
- 1:25:45we played a very clean game and I think to have any In you.
- 1:25:51And then, you know we look at Pitt hits on the bottom side
- 1:25:54with us, right? Yeah. 84th in the country,
- 1:25:59averaging over 60 yards per game on the penalty.
- 1:26:01So if we can do what we did last week and they are there normal
- 1:26:06cells, maybe we can gain a few advantages in the middle of his
- 1:26:10apartment. Yeah, I think if we continue to
- 1:26:13clean things up but also play better, right?
- 1:26:18I think ya can ratchet up our play but still keep it clean.
- 1:26:22The think that's important because I think, you know, our
- 1:26:25defense has played two good games where they were penalized
- 1:26:28a lot. Yeah, we need to have the, the
- 1:26:31good without the bad. Yeah.
- 1:26:34If we can do that, I think we've got something that we can work
- 1:26:36with in this game. Now I'm going to say a point
- 1:26:39goes back to our first show, Kiki, those taken deep shot.
- 1:26:42We know that patent are doozies. Defensive backs are handsy, they
- 1:26:48like to grab. They like the pool.
- 1:26:49So I think you're thinking about take some deep shots, it falls
- 1:26:53right into that, get some penalties on them.
- 1:26:56Give them frustrated, the all remember, 2016.
- 1:26:59And what an enjoyable treat that was that night.
- 1:27:03As they could not stop a fade or down bill passed.
- 1:27:05And they had like nine penalties and he lost his mind and I think
- 1:27:09it's I think it's something else that we're Caleb.
- 1:27:12Actually in, you know, maybe look at Jalen Jones as we saw
- 1:27:16him seen him. Go up.
- 1:27:17Maybe Daquan, right? Say screw it, go down the
- 1:27:21sidelines and just throw it up. We know they get handsy.
- 1:27:24If it looks bad enough, we may be able to take advantage of
- 1:27:28their aggressiveness. I came to take advantage of
- 1:27:30ours, make a throw that gives your guy a chance to get it, but
- 1:27:36isn't going to be a pic if they don't 100%.
- 1:27:41All right, something I'm gonna kind of call out the defense
- 1:27:44for. We've got a for some turnovers
- 1:27:47we have to the games, we have forced turnovers in think about
- 1:27:51the PC game, that early turnover, set the momentum.
- 1:27:55We are 115 in the country and forcing turnovers.
- 1:27:59We only had 4 for the year. And in his aggressive as we've
- 1:28:04been, we know this default fence need short Fields, so any sort
- 1:28:11of thing like that. And it's, and it's sort of crazy
- 1:28:14because, you know, we saw the West Virginia game with the
- 1:28:17forced turnover Midfield. We did nothing with and then
- 1:28:19obviously the DC gain we ended up scoring but Is it one of
- 1:28:23those things is this the week where those prying the defense
- 1:28:28say listen, we got to take risks.
- 1:28:31We've got to take some high-risk to forced turnover.
- 1:28:33So if you think you see a ball that's going to be thrown
- 1:28:37jumping? Because right now it's sort of
- 1:28:41we're not Death By A Thousand Cuts because the cuts are bigger
- 1:28:46but that's the way we're losing games, right?
- 1:28:50Yeah, but I think you still want you want to still play Within
- 1:28:52the scheme of the defense, okay. So I think you want to, you
- 1:28:57know, I think prior might dial up some more consistent pressure
- 1:29:01this week because he's going to have the opportunity to, I think
- 1:29:06if we can do anything to slow down their running game, then
- 1:29:10we've got some opportunities to get them in bed down and
- 1:29:13distances and they're not as deadly as the last two teams.
- 1:29:19We play. In moving the sticks.
- 1:29:21Yeah, with that type of game with the quick passing game,
- 1:29:26some of their things. Take a little bit more time to
- 1:29:28develop just the nature of the offense, there will be some more
- 1:29:32opportunities to get after the quarterback.
- 1:29:35I think this week than we've seen the last two weeks.
- 1:29:38So I think you see the blitzes get dialed up a lot more
- 1:29:41frequently and hopefully that can you know, whether it's, you
- 1:29:45know forcing a fumble in the back field, whether it's getting
- 1:29:49an interception And hopefully, that'll, you know, we can come
- 1:29:52home with least two in our belt this week.
- 1:29:55Absolutely. Last part of hokey Keys again.
- 1:29:58I think seeing them on the depth chart seen him warm up last
- 1:30:00week. I think it's a potential return
- 1:30:03of Malachi Thomas park, because the offense need something, they
- 1:30:06need something to look forward to.
- 1:30:08And I think having a guy like malachite guy who's consistent
- 1:30:12come back on the field in regardless of how many plays it
- 1:30:16is, I don't know how they're going to get him back in.
- 1:30:18I don't know how He is as far as his conditioning us.
- 1:30:23But you often see that sometimes right?
- 1:30:26One guy that well like that people feel good that can make
- 1:30:29plays comes back. All of a sudden, everybody feels
- 1:30:32better. Everybody focus is a little bit
- 1:30:34more. Everybody done presses much and
- 1:30:36the next thing you know the three yard run is going eight.
- 1:30:40The 8-yard runs going 28, you're hitting a big play downfield.
- 1:30:44So I mean, maybe I'm just looking at my room glasses but I
- 1:30:48think I'm coming back. Regardless on the field will be
- 1:30:51a little spark to this team if this is the weekend, which I
- 1:30:54hope it. It'll help.
- 1:30:56And like I said, I think it's one of those little things where
- 1:30:59you know, things he can give you is, you know, now one or two,
- 1:31:03your game becomes a 5 or 6 yard gain Now, you're not behind the
- 1:31:08sticks. Now, you're able to do a little
- 1:31:10bit more with your offense, the way you want to more
- 1:31:13consistently. So I don't think, I don't think
- 1:31:16it's going to be a big boost, but I think it'll be it'll help
- 1:31:19you in a little ways. They might add up to Big ways.
- 1:31:22Right? So we'll see, you know, a lot of
- 1:31:27this is going to depend on his, his conditioning level.
- 1:31:30Is he going to be more of a, at least this week, just a 325
- 1:31:34series type type. Or is it going to be something
- 1:31:38where, you know, we go ahead and give him kind of to second man.
- 1:31:44Carries week one. Yeah, we'll see.
- 1:31:47But if I'm hoping, he's able to go and at least give us a little
- 1:31:50something this week, abso-freakin'-lutely.
- 1:31:52All right. Brian.
- 1:31:53Well it's time. Let's get our game predictions
- 1:31:55in here. You let last week.
- 1:31:57I'll leave this week. I'm still not feeling great
- 1:32:02about the team of still, it's still tough for me to put a win
- 1:32:06on the books until we see some fundamental changes and things
- 1:32:12going in the right direction. Do I think?
- 1:32:15This is a better ballad was last week.
- 1:32:18Yeah, even though it coming off a loss of Georgia Tech that it's
- 1:32:22inexplicable, I think the familiarity with pit from Brent
- 1:32:28Pride playing four times a You know, folks on the staff playing
- 1:32:32pick the last few years, I think it's going to be a better game
- 1:32:35than last week. I can't, I can't put us taking
- 1:32:39the win. I think we lose somewhere, like,
- 1:32:413220. I think it's a 10-point game.
- 1:32:44I think it's a fight, and it's a fight all the way.
- 1:32:48I just think they get a little bit of a head in the, you know,
- 1:32:52the early third quarter, where they keep us at bay where again,
- 1:32:55we don't have that capability to make a couple of big plays.
- 1:33:00What? Bout you.
- 1:33:01I'm in the similar area I've got us going 27:16 as the final, I
- 1:33:10think we do a little bit better. It read the ball.
- 1:33:12Consistently to get it into the scoring range, but I think we
- 1:33:16still struggle to kind of get it over the goal line.
- 1:33:19Like we like we've been struggling recently.
- 1:33:20I think we get it in the scoring area but we come away with three
- 1:33:23a little bit more often than we than we want to.
- 1:33:27But we put together a few more drives that get us some points
- 1:33:29this week. We've seen the last few weeks.
- 1:33:31So I think it's going to be, like I said, 27:16 pit does just
- 1:33:38enough off fensively against our defense to kind of put them over
- 1:33:42the top there at the end. Yeah and we're hoping we're
- 1:33:44wrong completely wrong. Always what I hope is before the
- 1:33:48end of it. All right for on big screeners
- 1:33:52great great call last week on the Ole Miss game got.
- 1:33:57I'm not sure if you went to like FanDuel or something in late.
- 1:34:00Deadly. I'm laying money line, and I'm
- 1:34:02laying this. I wish I would have, man, you
- 1:34:05nailed it. I would have been sweating.
- 1:34:06The whole way though, I would even would have whole damn way.
- 1:34:09What had been sweating? The whole my game last week I
- 1:34:13was 11, that turnover deep is what got?
- 1:34:16It's a 10-point game. Probably should have been a
- 1:34:18seven right into number four, a push.
- 1:34:20But it is what it is. What's your big screen this
- 1:34:23week? Obviously, this weekend is going
- 1:34:25to be a beautiful weekend. To not sit inside.
- 1:34:28So which one are you kind of saying?
- 1:34:30Well, go out and do things here. I'm going to go ahead and throw
- 1:34:36that that Kansas TCU on my big screen this week, buddy.
- 1:34:40All right. That's, that's an intriguing
- 1:34:43matchup because you got TCU Sunny Dykes has them rolling
- 1:34:49early. Absolutely rolling offensively.
- 1:34:53You know, then you got Kansas that that's really kind of
- 1:34:56turned and turned it around after some real bad years for
- 1:35:01them. So, you know, we'll see if
- 1:35:04Kansas has the ability to take that next step and beat a team
- 1:35:09that has put some good football out there in recent years.
- 1:35:12So I like that matchup. It's a little bit of a different
- 1:35:17look. I think so usually, don't see
- 1:35:19TCU in Kansas in a in a prime prime matchup game.
- 1:35:23So now you don't have known her going to be a high noon.
- 1:35:26Our game day is going to be there and now it's like only
- 1:35:30five division are five power, five schools that have never
- 1:35:34gotten. The visit UVA is included in one
- 1:35:37of those hands. It's Kansas not set off.
- 1:35:42I like that game. I'm probably not going to see
- 1:35:44any of that game due to sports, but I'm waiting until the
- 1:35:49evening. And there's a lot of rank
- 1:35:51matchups this week. I mean, you got that game,
- 1:35:53you've got Tennessee LSU, as there's a noon game.
- 1:35:57You've got UT Utah UCLA. You got Auburn Georgia.
- 1:36:01Oldest rivalry in the Deep South, but, you know,
- 1:36:07essentially a holy would be why, you know, the name.
- 1:36:09But I've got my hides going around.
- 1:36:12And I want to know, if USC's a real deal.
- 1:36:15And I think they're going to get a challenge this week with Wazoo
- 1:36:18coming into town to the Coliseum. 7:30, so I will be
- 1:36:21able to watch it. That's also something that
- 1:36:24determines if I big screening if I can be Brother double vision
- 1:36:27to watch it. And that line right now is 13
- 1:36:33points. Why zoos lost one game where
- 1:36:39Oregon scored 29 Points in 14 minutes and 50 seconds.
- 1:36:44They should be five a note because Oregon pull one out of
- 1:36:48the errors on that one. I'm but I think this is a real
- 1:36:53test for u.s. you have AB you have a balanced Washington State
- 1:36:55team. I mean their defense with the
- 1:36:58exception of that quarter has played very well they want in a
- 1:37:00tough environment so that's the one I'm going to be watching.
- 1:37:07Who do you think in your game? You go in Kansas, you think, TC,
- 1:37:10you texted? I feel like TCU has the the
- 1:37:17better end of the talent although I feel like Kansas has
- 1:37:22just been playing with with a little extra spark.
- 1:37:25So I've been leaning back and forth.
- 1:37:30You know, the the frogs are, are the favorite here by six points.
- 1:37:37I'm going to go what I did last week, I'm going to take Kansas
- 1:37:41in the points. But I think TCU wins out, right?
- 1:37:45All right, all right. Popcorn game, we're in the 30s
- 1:37:51or 40s. Oh yeah.
- 1:37:52Oh yeah. Whatever we're over is hammer it
- 1:37:56a seven and a half in my game. I'm going to take you to see the
- 1:38:01lines 13. I don't think they can cover
- 1:38:03that but I do think USC does get it done.
- 1:38:08As much as I liked was doing. They kind of had a that one
- 1:38:11sucky loss. I think I think USC is you know
- 1:38:16going to get it done. But it's going to be a lot
- 1:38:19closer than 13 points. In my opinion.
- 1:38:22Brian has anything broken in the last little while here?
