- 0:39SPEAKER_05: Welcome in, everybody, to the Talk and Tech Podcast.
- 0:42SPEAKER_05: I'm your host, Steven Rodriguez.
- 0:43SPEAKER_05: My co-host, Tristan McGonagall, is here.
- 0:45SPEAKER_05: Tristan, what's up, buddy?
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: That took about three takes, by the way, treasured listeners, for him to get out.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: Just one.
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: I am doing good.
- 0:55SPEAKER_01: Not as good as you, man.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Tossing back some uh all stats.
- 0:58SPEAKER_05: So yeah, that's my one that I've had this evening.
- 1:02SPEAKER_05: Really, really throwing him back on a Sunday.
- 1:04SPEAKER_01: Steven is cranked up for this episode.
- 1:06SPEAKER_01: Um but dude, it's it's so good to be back behind the mic.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: Now that we're done with the uh player analysis of the Tex Tech Red Raiders, now we got an episode of just uh really eye testing and gut feelings, and there's gonna be a ton wrong when we look back at the end of the season.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: But this I think these episodes of like overview of a schedule are some of the most fun ones because it's all just prejecture, you know, like no, no one no one can even say you're you're absolutely correct or wrong.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Um, except I will be telling you you're absolutely incorrect and wrong, just because you will be.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: But yeah, it's good to be it's good to be back on the mic, man.
- 1:45SPEAKER_01: How you doing?
- 1:46SPEAKER_05: I am good.
- 1:46SPEAKER_05: I am at the point in the off season where I just need games to happen.
- 1:51SPEAKER_05: I've listened to all the previews, I've listened to enough of the podcasts and enough of everybody talking about what they think is going to happen, and I'd rather just watch stuff on the field.
- 2:02SPEAKER_01: So you want to add to that?
- 2:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well, we have to you have to do a prediction spot.
- 2:08SPEAKER_05: You have it's just that point in the year where football is now what three weeks away for Texas Tech, two weeks away for all of college football.
- 2:15SPEAKER_05: So, you know, we gotta do this.
- 2:17SPEAKER_01: I've told you in the Treasure listeners, I actually kind of love offseason content just because of how like kind of how dumb it is just and how imaginative it is.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Um But can we can we start with the first topic that everyone is talking about?
- 2:31SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 2:32SPEAKER_01: Steven, I'm not gonna lie to you, dude.
- 2:34SPEAKER_01: The Big 12 logo thing is awful.
- 2:37SPEAKER_01: It's i i it of all the ways they could have done it, they decided to do the worst possible option of applying this sponsorship.
- 2:46SPEAKER_05: You're talking about the monster deal.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 2:48SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 2:49SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 2:49SPEAKER_05: It's better.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: What did I say?
- 2:51SPEAKER_05: You just said the Big 12 logo.
- 2:53SPEAKER_05: Oh apologies.
- 2:55SPEAKER_05: No, yeah, the monster deal is brutal.
- 2:57SPEAKER_05: It's it was brutal from the start.
- 2:59SPEAKER_05: Um you know, see it's disappointing from a take it back to just the financial aspect of this is really a bad look for the Big 12 at this point.
- 3:11SPEAKER_05: I know that each individual school still has the opportunity to do their own jerseys sponsorship, I get it.
- 3:18SPEAKER_05: But to have a conference-wide deal only equate to about 1.5-ish million for each every school, and then you see Ohio State and Wisconsin and all these other schools get, you know, double figure million dollar deals for their jersey patch sponsor.
- 3:36SPEAKER_05: It's just a horrible look for the Big 12.
- 3:38SPEAKER_05: So from that perspective, it already puts us bad, and then they decided to just put the worst graphic design around this on courts on jerseys, and now it's starting to come out.
- 3:48SPEAKER_05: I think Kansas and West Virginia, some of the behind-the-scenes stuff has popped up, and uh yeah, the logo looks bad.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: It just really seems like it was a really badly designed deal.
- 3:58SPEAKER_01: Like the way they pinched this, I don't I feel like Monster is the one that made out like bandits with everything they they did marketing-wise to the teams.
- 4:06SPEAKER_01: Because you know when you first hear this news, you first hear like everyone's gonna get a million and a half dollars.
- 4:12SPEAKER_01: And at first you hear it's gonna be Monster Energy presents the Big 12, whatever, or however it is the Big 12 Monster Energy Conference.
- 4:19SPEAKER_01: That doesn't bother me.
- 4:21SPEAKER_01: Like that that is not super uncommon with sports leagues to be sponsored by a a major sponsor.
- 4:27SPEAKER_01: Um, so I was like, okay, so whenever I turn on the TV, it's just gonna say Big 12 Monster Energy Conference, big deal.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: I don't really care.
- 4:34SPEAKER_01: You know, you get it the extra jingle, and then you hear that they have the rights to a patch and the field logos as well.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: And you're like, uh, okay.
- 4:44SPEAKER_01: So you're only getting a million and a half for that?
- 4:47SPEAKER_01: That seems a little low.
- 4:49SPEAKER_01: And then you see the actual designs, and you're like, did they just decide to do the absolute lamest thing possible for this?
- 4:57SPEAKER_01: Because, I mean, A, as all of y'all seen, it's just a rectangle with a black backdrop like you would make in Microsoft Paint, and then you have the three green claws, and then it's just the white and black Big 12 logo.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: It's not even the cool team logo anymore, where you'd have the team colors mixed into it.
- 5:15SPEAKER_01: No, they have that, they have that now.
- 5:17SPEAKER_05: They're sure yeah, the the 12 is going to be team-specific colorway.
- 5:22SPEAKER_05: Like they're doing that on the Houston court, they showed it on the on the Kansas and the West Virginia jerseys.
- 5:27SPEAKER_05: They showed a version of the Big 12.
- 5:29SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 5:30SPEAKER_01: When I was looking at the Kansas jerseys, I it looked like it was the white and the black.
- 5:34SPEAKER_01: Just that.
- 5:35SPEAKER_05: I've I've seen on the Yeah, I've seen No, and I don't think I I think the Big 12 logo is going to be team-specific colorway, but the monster logo is always going to be green.
- 5:46SPEAKER_01: I I I just cannot fathom why the idea wasn't just integrate the monster logo into the Big 12 logo.
- 5:56SPEAKER_01: Like, you know, people have made all sorts of quick renderings, you know, on their uh and post it on social media of just having like the claws match the team colors behind the Big 12 logo, and it actually looks pretty cool.
- 6:05SPEAKER_01: And you wouldn't, whatever you see, like you wouldn't be that upset about it.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: Be like, okay, I mean, if you're getting an extra million a dollar, half million and a half dollars for that, like you can't be that mad about it.
- 6:13SPEAKER_01: It's it's an energy drink, so it's not like it's a super lame thing.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: It's not like it's like a tax funding group.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: No, I mean like a they'll do your tax like a rocket mortgage or whatever, something boring like that.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: It's it's just you know, it's like okay, something young, something related to the zone, um, with how uh with how influential they are in sports, period.
- 6:31SPEAKER_01: But then you see the actual thing, it's like that's gross.
- 6:35SPEAKER_01: That's that that sucks.
- 6:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and so you know, there's a thought, and and I actually I work in this in my day job to an extent.
- 6:44SPEAKER_05: I've actually helped with some Big 12 partnership stuff for a couple brands in the past and everything, and so I kind of have a little bit of knowledge when it comes to this.
- 6:52SPEAKER_05: Everybody, when the when the deal came out and the number that Monster is paying the Big 12 to do this, everybody says it's low.
- 6:59SPEAKER_05: Everybody says that it's it's not a big enough financial number for all these schools to be making to be not only sponsor, you know, monster energy Big 12 conference, but also, like you mentioned, having stuff on the court, having stuff on the jerseys, having stuff basically everywhere that monster, I mean, they sponsored the whole Big 12 Media Day deal.
- 7:20SPEAKER_05: They're gonna have probably a big influence at the Big 12 championship games and all that kind of stuff.
- 7:24SPEAKER_05: I mean, to for$1.5 million a school, this deal is nothing.
- 7:28SPEAKER_05: Like you're getting nothing for this.
- 7:30SPEAKER_05: It's it's a ridiculously low offer from Monster that the Big 12 took.
- 7:35SPEAKER_05: Now, I do want to give Brett Yormark a little bit of grace here.
- 7:39SPEAKER_05: This was the first one.
- 7:41SPEAKER_05: No other conference did a conference-wide deal like this before.
- 7:45SPEAKER_05: So you're kind of when on the when these negotiations happen, a lot of this happens based off of previous deals.
- 7:52SPEAKER_05: When you're starting something brand new, yeah, I can understand you being lowballed quite a bit because you don't really know the market yet.
- 7:58SPEAKER_05: There is no market.
- 7:59SPEAKER_05: This is the first time the jersey patches were allowed going into uh you know college sports teams and everything.
- 8:06SPEAKER_05: But um, for everything that they got, I mean the Big 12 should these teams should be fuming after putting this freaking logo on their field and on their jerseys and make it look horrible and not get that much money from him.
- 8:18SPEAKER_01: That was that was gonna be my point.
- 8:20SPEAKER_01: Is like, yeah, the the grace to lend, if you want to say the word grace, maybe frustration, you want to lend to it to your mark, is how well how much was it just him being really excited to seem cutting edge and ahead of the pack?
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: You know, like I feel like he's obsessed with trying to make the Big 12, the different conference, which you have to.
- 8:38SPEAKER_01: I mean, I totally get that.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: Like, we have to find ways to stand out differently than just straight up on the field product.
- 8:45SPEAKER_01: So I totally get it.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: So um, but it's again, it's just I I think we're just gonna be running around in circles talking about how frustrating it is with that low number.
- 8:53SPEAKER_01: Um, but again, I mean, I guess you could also say it's it's that's a that's a nice jingle in the in the bank for what's more or less a small ask at the end of the day.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: You know, it's not like not much is changing.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: It's just it's gonna make the branding of the Big 12 seem kind of weird for a bit.
- 9:07SPEAKER_01: Um, do we know how long it was?
- 9:08SPEAKER_01: I forgot to double check that.
- 9:10SPEAKER_05: I don't know.
- 9:10SPEAKER_05: I don't know the years that they put on it.
- 9:12SPEAKER_05: I uh it's probably something like a two, three-year deal.
- 9:14SPEAKER_05: Uh, I imagine they're they usually, when it comes to something like this and a brand new, you know, something that nobody's explored yet, they usually do shorter term deals just in case uh, you know, you see the market blow up like they've seen so far.
- 9:26SPEAKER_05: Um there's there's one more point about monster like our we were talking to our buddies about this earlier, and Monster I and this might be an overall question about how brands operate with their logo and and their copyright and everything that goes into it.
- 9:45SPEAKER_05: Brands are so scared to customize their logos now and to change their base logo, and it I feel like it wasn't always that way.
- 9:53SPEAKER_05: Like, I feel like going back to the 90s and the 2000s, like brands got pretty weird when it came to like mixing their actual you know rights and their copy copy marks and everything like that, like putting them in different cool ways, like trying to be innovative and intuitive.
- 10:09SPEAKER_05: But now it's like you don't mess with this.
- 10:12SPEAKER_05: And Texas Tech is a lot like this too with the double T.
- 10:14SPEAKER_05: Like they do not they do not let you mess with the double T.
- 10:18SPEAKER_05: Like even their own, as you know, the club sports and everything within, like kind of affiliated with Texas Tech University.
- 10:25SPEAKER_05: If you as soon as you change that double T, it's like bad news for the brands.
- 10:31SPEAKER_01: I think that's I think that's a really good point.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: And it it's really silly too.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: I mean, I think you can understand, like, yes, I understand that the green claw M is iconic for Monster.
- 10:41SPEAKER_01: You see that and you understand what the brand is, and it's just frustrating because you'd be like, you could have kept that in like the main Big 12 branding.
- 10:48SPEAKER_01: Like if you could you could have had like you know, you could have integrated the logo with the Big 12 logo, and then whenever whenever it's like presenting the the Big 12 conference presented by Monster Energy, you can have the green and black, you know, instead of something else.
- 11:00SPEAKER_01: But with the teams, you already have countless cans who have the cool different versions of the M.
- 11:06SPEAKER_01: So the the the M Claw.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: Like, I don't I just I don't understand why there couldn't have been a fun uh marketing blend, let the marketing teams work together to develop really cool merch that I'm sure even the fans would want to get behind.
- 11:19SPEAKER_01: I bet there's there's some fans out there that would legitimately buy the merch of the this the school colors blended with the monster stuff, you know, without with how enter into energy drinks some folks are out there.
- 11:29SPEAKER_01: Um so it's it's it it is just baffling.
- 11:33SPEAKER_01: It just it seems like like you kind of said straight up, it's just uncool.
- 11:36SPEAKER_01: Like here you are this cool energy drink brand associated with youth, sports, and energy, and you go like so plain and safe with it, it's just disappointing.
- 11:45SPEAKER_05: I just I just imagine these meetings, like the like Brett Yormark popping on a call with CEO of Monster or whatever marketing, and them looking at this design that one of their creative teams made and being like, Yeah, that's good.
- 11:59SPEAKER_05: Like, no, like who looks at that logo that's on the field currently at Texas Tech and says, Yeah, that's a that's a good look.
- 12:05SPEAKER_05: We like that.
- 12:06SPEAKER_05: No, nobody likes it.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: It's I but I was like, Yeah, you're right.
- 12:09SPEAKER_01: We got to we have to preserve not only the monster logo, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: The Big 12 logo too.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: We can't have the mingle.
- 12:16SPEAKER_01: Like, that's just it's so lame.
- 12:18SPEAKER_01: And I hope that like, even though it's probably a multi-year contract, but I do hope there's room for adjustments whenever it comes to say designs and maybe even monetary rewards.
- 12:28SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's it's just we're probably spending too much time on this, but it it's just it's silly, it's ugly, and I think it's just what's gonna happen is you're gonna see the big 12 in the monster logo with the big 12 patch, and then you're gonna see it mixed in with other businesses that are sponsoring these teams.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: They're gonna start looking like NASCAR suits now, you know, or uh or your uh European soccer teams.
- 12:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I hope it doesn't come to that.
- 12:52SPEAKER_05: The if they just put a patch on the jersey, that's fine.
- 12:54SPEAKER_05: They started doing that in the NBA a couple years ago, and it's everything's been fine with it.
- 12:58SPEAKER_05: Like nobody really sees a difference just because there's a corporate logo on the top left of the basketball jersey, not a big deal.
- 13:04SPEAKER_05: I can live with that.
- 13:05SPEAKER_05: When you start putting on the field and you start calling it the monster energy Big 12, it's like, okay, this is a little much.
- 13:10SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, let's move on.
- 13:12SPEAKER_05: Uh in conclusion, it looks like shit.
- 13:15SPEAKER_05: Um what we're really here to talk about today are season predictions going through the schedule that the Texas Tech Red Raiders face in 2026.
- 13:26SPEAKER_05: Um, we're gonna kind of tier some of the other Big 12 teams on on who we think are gonna be contenders, who we think is gonna be bottom of the barrel, and then give you a few kind of final predictions uh as we as we move closer and closer to the season.
- 13:39SPEAKER_01: So do you want to do you want to start with our Big 12 power rankings or do you want to like go down text list first?
- 13:43SPEAKER_05: Uh let's uh let's do some power rankings.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: All right, so you want to start from the bottom or the top?
- 13:50SPEAKER_05: Uh let's go, let's start from the top because I think we're gonna have a I think we're gonna have a similar tier one.
- 13:55SPEAKER_05: And I think everybody mostly has similar tier ones when it comes to like you know who's actually a contender in this conference, who we think is going to 100% like well, we I'm sure we broke it out differently, but how I broke it out was my tier one, I basically put disappointing season if they aren't in the Big 12 championship.
- 14:13SPEAKER_05: And I have two teams in that category, Texas Tech and BYU.
- 14:17SPEAKER_05: Those are the two teams that I have in my tier one of the Big 12, which is truly both of these fan bases are going to be disappointed if they are not in the Big 12 championship.
- 14:27SPEAKER_05: And honestly, if you get to a point where it's like two losses in conference, it's a bad season for you because of the expectations.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: No, absolutely.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: And I and I think with the with how their seasons both went last year, not only are you both vying for a shot at the Big 12 championship once again, you got you you built up a lot of goodwill for the playoff committee as well.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: So you're you're really the the conference's best chance to get two teams into the playoff, um, especially since we don't see each other during the season.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: And so if you both you say go undefeated in conference, um the the the committee shouldn't take the championship loss too hard on either team.
- 15:04SPEAKER_01: And you should you shouldn't have two Big 12 teams into the playoff.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: Um so you also have that to think about as well.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: Um, but I'm I'm dude, that there was never gonna be any other way.
- 15:12SPEAKER_01: I was thinking about making a cheeky joke saying it's your Kansas Jayhawks number one, baby, but it's it's absolutely gonna be um tech is it's it's the clear number one.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: And I I feel like even putting tech in the same tier as BYU might not even represent reality either.
- 15:26SPEAKER_01: I don't know if that's necessarily arrogance to say, but I do think talent-wise, pound for pound, at pretty much every single position, tech just simply outclasses pretty much every team in the Big 12 at the moment, at least on paper, at least from stat sheets we see, intangibles.
- 15:43SPEAKER_01: It really seems like TechStech is a clear cut above.
- 15:45SPEAKER_01: But if you're gonna put anybody in there with them, I think it's BYU.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: Um especially with all that returning production they're bringing back, you know, especially uh, you know, the the headman with uh Bachmeyer back there.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: And of course, you know, they retain Kalani Sataki, which was awesome.
- 15:57SPEAKER_01: I was really happy for them uh fending off Penn State.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: Um, so it's it's it's great to have a another towering machine out there in the Rocky Mountains that are veering from us from the plains.
- 16:08SPEAKER_01: So I think we're gonna we're probably gonna see uh a Cooper Red Raider matchup in the Arlington again.
- 16:13SPEAKER_05: So to be clear though, your tier one is just Texas Tech.
- 16:16SPEAKER_05: I really do the Red Raiders above everybody else in their own tier of their own.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:21SPEAKER_01: Yes, because I I think you can make the argument that BYU has people nipping at their heels closer than we do.
- 16:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, I don't think that's a bad take at all.
- 16:28SPEAKER_05: I I I am putting tech and BYU in that tier one category because I do think BYU, like what you said with the returning production, with how good that that team really I think they are going to be this year.
- 16:40SPEAKER_05: Um I I put them right there with Texas Tech in you're you're awfully disappointed if you don't have a spot in the Big 12 championship this year.
- 16:48SPEAKER_05: And uh also, like you mentioned, them not playing each other is a uh is a good opportunity, you know, for both teams.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the Big 12.
- 16:55SPEAKER_01: Um, we need some clear-cut winners.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: And it's to be clear though, I think Texas Tech missing the championship is a way bigger coup than BYU missing it.
- 17:05SPEAKER_05: I gotcha.
- 17:06SPEAKER_05: I gotcha.
- 17:06SPEAKER_05: That's fair.
- 17:07SPEAKER_05: So who else is in your BYU tier of tier two?
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: So I think BYU is at the top of this pile, and I would say it goes um I'm gonna be played, I'm gonna be conservative and say there's two other teams with them.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: And I think people are gonna be really shocked by the teams I place into this bucket.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: I'm really high on the Houston Cougars.
- 17:28SPEAKER_01: I think that's gonna be one competent team, man.
- 17:30SPEAKER_01: I think they're not gonna do anything poorly, and I think they're gonna be on top of everything else otherwise.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: They may not be truly exceptional like a Texas Tech, but I think that they are gonna be so dang well coached and competent and everything that they're just gonna be able to beat you because they're they're they're just so solid.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: Um so I think U of H is my number three, and here's kind of a shocker.
- 17:53SPEAKER_01: I think number four in this mix is actually the Arizona Wildcats.
- 17:58SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: I think the Arizona Wildcats are a bit of a dark horse for me, whenever it comes to how gosh darn good they're gonna be.
- 18:05SPEAKER_01: Um, because I really think they're gonna be the team that really pops and surprises.
- 18:09SPEAKER_01: Like people the U of H having a great year would be surprising, like you know, just just just for them to build that momentum.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: But I think Arizona really leaping up and bypassing a lot of teams people have above them, gener uh generally speaking, right now, would really surprise a lot of people.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: But I mean they have their quarterback, dude.
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Um, and I think the their their coaches actually putting together a solid season.
- 18:27SPEAKER_01: They were they're really counted it out these past two years.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: They've outperformed their expectations.
- 18:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so I I agree with you on on those two being in my my second tier was basically uh it would not surprise me to see them in the Big 12 championship.
- 18:41SPEAKER_05: So if I if I see, and I have four teams in this tier.
- 18:44SPEAKER_05: I have Houston, I have TCU, I have Arizona, and Arizona State.
- 18:48SPEAKER_05: Um, really Houston to everything that you said, Willie Fritz is a hell of a coach.
- 18:52SPEAKER_05: Um, they're doing a great job over there.
- 18:54SPEAKER_05: They did some work in the transfer portal, especially on that line play.
- 18:57SPEAKER_05: Um, they still have some really skilled um guys of receiver.
- 19:01SPEAKER_05: Um they're bringing in uh, I believe Makkay, do, do, do, do, do uh Makai Hughes uh back at running back, the Oregon transfers.
- 19:10SPEAKER_05: So they're gonna be solid, and they're bringing back Wegman at quarterback.
- 19:13SPEAKER_05: So having that continuity, having that leadership from him, um, I it would not surprise me at all to see Houston there.
- 19:18SPEAKER_05: Um Arizona, very similar.
- 19:20SPEAKER_05: Brent Brennan surprised.
- 19:21SPEAKER_05: I think he was the most underrated, good job last year.
- 19:25SPEAKER_05: I mean, they won nine games at Arizona.
- 19:28SPEAKER_05: I mean, Arizona was expected to be bottom tier of the Big 12 last year, and I think he surprised everybody.
- 19:33SPEAKER_05: Definitely had a good end of the year, and he has Noah Fafita coming back at quarterback.
- 19:37SPEAKER_05: Um, I think uh Arizona's definitely gonna be a strong opponent.
- 19:40SPEAKER_05: I do have TCU in here because I think um interesting.
- 19:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I just think they're solid.
- 19:45SPEAKER_05: I mean, they had a nine-win season last year.
- 19:47SPEAKER_05: They were far from bad.
- 19:48SPEAKER_05: Um, the schedule's not great for them, but it's also I I just for some reason I believe in TCU.
- 19:55SPEAKER_05: Uh I I know Sonny Dykes hasn't quite met the same expectation as when he made it to the uh the national championship games a few years ago, but um I really see TCU being a strong contender here in the Big 12.
- 20:06SPEAKER_05: And then I just really believe in Kenny Dillingham at Arizona State.
- 20:09SPEAKER_05: Like I know they had I know they had a lot of turnover.
- 20:12SPEAKER_05: I know they lost Jordan Tyson, Sam Levitt.
- 20:14SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, they're they're two seasons now without Cam Scattaboo, but I just believe in Kenny Dillingham on building that culture and and bringing in guys to replace him.
- 20:22SPEAKER_05: They still got some good transfers to come in.
- 20:25SPEAKER_05: Um and I would have all four of those teams kind of in my tier two, right below the tech BYU.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: That's gonna be a heck of a desert showdown.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: Uh Arizona, Arizona State this year.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: That's probably one of the best games of the conference this year.
- 20:38SPEAKER_01: Um so you know, if so that's your tier two.
- 20:41SPEAKER_01: Your tier two is a little bigger than mine.
- 20:42SPEAKER_01: I just went with three teams.
- 20:44SPEAKER_01: Well, it sounded like you put four or five in there.
- 20:46SPEAKER_05: I was I was four in tier two, two and tier one.
- 20:50SPEAKER_05: Um and we could keep going, I can keep going down my tiers if you want to.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: So uh yeah, let's let's go ahead and go to tier three.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: Can I can I actually just pop in for a quick second?
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: I just I just want to say my tier three at the top of the pile.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: I have TCU.
- 21:03SPEAKER_01: I barely I barely nudged them down below uh Arizona in my power rankings.
- 21:07SPEAKER_01: Um I just I just think U of H and Arizona got too much have more gas than tank than TCU will, especially like you said with TCU's schedule.
- 21:16SPEAKER_01: They may be just as good, but I you may not see it reflected in the record.
- 21:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 21:20SPEAKER_05: No, I think that's a fair point.
- 21:22SPEAKER_05: Um so moving down the list for me is my tier three, and I have four total tiers here, by the way.
- 21:29SPEAKER_05: So so tier three has four schools in it as well, and these are my dark horses for potential could have a really good season, or I could see them like really having a poor season and just like uh you know, bottom of the barrel, Big 12.
- 21:44SPEAKER_05: But um I have Utah, I have Oklahoma State, I have Kansas State, and I have Baylor here in this uh tier three for dark horses.
- 21:54SPEAKER_05: Um Utah, I I just don't know where to put them.
- 21:57SPEAKER_05: They're they have turnover at every Everywhere coaching staff, quarterback, line.
- 22:03SPEAKER_05: I mean, everywhere they have new players.
- 22:05SPEAKER_05: It's it's like a completely brand new team with a brand new coach.
- 22:08SPEAKER_05: And I know that worked out last time for Utah.
- 22:11SPEAKER_05: I just don't know how it's going to translate this time around.
- 22:14SPEAKER_05: Now with Kyle Whittingham no longer there and Morgan Scally taking over.
- 22:17SPEAKER_05: Um, Oklahoma State's very similar.
- 22:19SPEAKER_05: New brand new coach brought in a lot of skilled positions from the uh from the North Texas team last year.
- 22:24SPEAKER_05: Drew Mestermaker is a dude and gonna be one of the best quarterbacks in the Big 12.
- 22:28SPEAKER_05: I don't know about their defense.
- 22:30SPEAKER_05: I think their defense might be completely terrible.
- 22:32SPEAKER_05: Like we might be seeing a 2015 Texas Tech in this Oklahoma State team where it's high-powered offense, but you can't stop a soul on defense.
- 22:41SPEAKER_05: Um, I have Kansas State here as well, just uh Avery Johnson potential, Colin Klein, new coach.
- 22:48SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, a lot of potential here.
- 22:51SPEAKER_05: Young, new hip could be more high powered than they were last year.
- 22:55SPEAKER_05: Uh, I think they were really, you know, falling behind on the times with with Chris Kleiman and and Matt Wells as your offensive coordinator.
- 23:02SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, not a good look.
- 23:04SPEAKER_05: And then for some reason, I can't quit Baylor.
- 23:06SPEAKER_05: I can't just completely say that Baylor's gonna be terrible.
- 23:09SPEAKER_05: I I do it every year, even though they're usually disappointing under Dave Aranda.
- 23:14SPEAKER_05: I don't know if it's DJ Lagway coming over and me still being kind of high on DJ Lagway.
- 23:20SPEAKER_05: Um, but I I don't know.
- 23:21SPEAKER_05: I have Baylor here because I think they could be pretty good.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: You know, that's I'll go ahead and and my my my group looks similar.
- 23:28SPEAKER_01: And that's kind of funny thing about doing these these power rankings is you know, everyone no one knows what's gonna happen.
- 23:34SPEAKER_01: So we're just kind of going off of what the general consensus are and just eye testing.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: So my five teams here, I already really already gave you TCU, and then below them I have Utah at six.
- 23:44SPEAKER_01: So in in uh in this tier three here.
- 23:47SPEAKER_01: Um I just with Utah, they're gonna be good, but I just I I expect some growing pains.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: You don't just lose Whittingham and nothing nothing changes, you know.
- 23:56SPEAKER_01: Like you it's just you don't take one of the greatest coaches of the modern era and not take some sort of step back, in my opinion.
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: So I I think you're gonna start seeing some growing pains.
- 24:06SPEAKER_01: I think they're gonna win plenty of games.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Um, but I I don't see them going any higher than six there.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: Seven, I have Arizona State.
- 24:13SPEAKER_01: Um it's you know, like you like you, dude.
- 24:15SPEAKER_01: Uh Dillingham is is the man.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: Like he's obviously I think he's everybody's favorite Big 12 coach.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Um, and he's he's gonna figure it out, but he's got a lot of heartburn to get through, dude.
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: Like that C Lot, his team got gutted, and it's just we'll see, we'll see if he's capable of pulling it out of the mud there.
- 24:31SPEAKER_01: Um nine I got OSU.
- 24:34SPEAKER_01: OSU is one that you see people get pretty excited about.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: Um and I'm not I'm not I I get it.
- 24:42SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's it's it's fun to see this high-powered classic Big 12 minded guy head to Stillwater.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: But again, I think there's gonna be some growing pains.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: I don't think you just copy and paste North Texas into Oklahoma State and have high success in the Big 12.
- 24:57SPEAKER_01: I'm not saying that North Texas was not a good team, but I don't know if you can go day in and day out in the Big 12 and expect to um succeed at a very high level.
- 25:07SPEAKER_01: I think you can go middling, but I don't think you can go much higher than perhaps the 500 zone.
- 25:12SPEAKER_01: I skipped K-State on accident.
- 25:14SPEAKER_01: Number eight, I have K-State.
- 25:16SPEAKER_01: And I think the continuity of having a lot of the same faces on offense are just gonna help him there.
- 25:21SPEAKER_01: Um, because otherwise I think he'd be a lot lower for me if he if he didn't, if he wasn't entering a a team that uh he's probably he was more or less able to keep together with duct tape due to his connection to the school too and to this team specifically.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: Um and 10, I'm with you.
- 25:38SPEAKER_01: I I I have Baylor at 10.
- 25:40SPEAKER_01: I think that Aranda is gonna be pulling some back against the wall sort of situation and just really trying to will his team over the hump.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: I I'm not gonna say it's enough to save his job, but I think I don't think it's gonna be ugly and embarrassing by any means.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: I think it's gonna be an awkward departure of like uh yeah, we really don't want to fire you, but it's like we don't have much of a choice at this point.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: Where it's not it's you know what I mean say, you know what I'm saying?
- 26:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, I I get it.
- 26:08SPEAKER_05: It's Baylor is Baylor is a uh is an enigma for me this year.
- 26:13SPEAKER_05: I don't I don't quite understand what's happening.
- 26:15SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, Dave Viranda, if it hadn't been for the AD turnover last year, probably wouldn't be there this year, and they'd probably be looking at a different coach.
- 26:23SPEAKER_05: So, you know, it seems like it's the fourth year in a row that he's fighting for his job and has just somehow managed to continue on as the head coach over there.
- 26:31SPEAKER_05: Um, I do like DJ Lagway.
- 26:33SPEAKER_05: I I don't know if it's just like this weird uh you know bias that I have going into last year because a lot of people thought he was going to be one of the better quarterbacks in the SEC last year and did not work out.
- 26:43SPEAKER_05: Obviously, Florida was a complete disaster last year.
- 26:46SPEAKER_05: Lagway had a lot to do with that, but I think really when you don't have the leadership, how good are you going to be?
- 26:52SPEAKER_05: And obviously, you saw Florida made a change over there.
- 26:54SPEAKER_05: So um I still don't think they have much of a defense.
- 26:57SPEAKER_05: I still don't think they have much of an offensive line.
- 27:00SPEAKER_05: Um, they have some decent skill positions, but Baylor's like, if they win that Auburn game at the beginning of the year, that could be like a defining moment for them, and they could like carry that momentum on into the Big 12, and I could potentially see them being like a dark horse, like like maybe a nine-10-win team, potentially.
- 27:18SPEAKER_05: Like, I just don't know what them.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: And that's a super winnable game.
- 27:21SPEAKER_01: I'm not gonna say they're they they become a dark horse if they beat Auburn because uh isn't Auburn in do uh importing a year one coach this year?
- 27:28SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but they're okay, they're good.
- 27:30SPEAKER_05: They're like Auburn's gonna be.
- 27:31SPEAKER_05: I'm sure they're fine.
- 27:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm sure, I'm sure they're they're solid, but uh, it's just like you're you have this veteran head coach at Baylor.
- 27:39SPEAKER_01: I mean, he they should have won the game last year against Auburn, but Baylor just decided to be God knows what last year.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: And so um I I I I think they can win that game.
- 27:49SPEAKER_01: And if they do win that game, I think it's a good sign that you can expect them to go bowling, but I don't know, I don't know if it necessarily means they're gonna be like really popping up.
- 27:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so I mean uh we're we're on a similar track here.
- 28:01SPEAKER_05: Um my tier four is the remaining six, um, which is I put will be the bottom six in some order.
- 28:08SPEAKER_05: I don't know what order that is, but it's going to be these are going to be the bottom six teams that you see at the end of the year, in my humble opinion.
- 28:15SPEAKER_05: And that is West Virginia, UCF, Colorado, Cincinnati, Kansas, and Iowa State.
- 28:21SPEAKER_05: Um, we can go one by one here.
- 28:23SPEAKER_05: We start with West Virginia.
- 28:25SPEAKER_05: Um, Rich Rod, year two.
- 28:28SPEAKER_05: I thought about putting them in the Dark Horse category.
- 28:30SPEAKER_05: They're like the one that's on the line.
- 28:33SPEAKER_05: And it's not, there's no real analysis behind it.
- 28:36SPEAKER_05: Like, I don't really believe in Scotty Fox Jr.
- 28:38SPEAKER_05: being the starting quarterback.
- 28:39SPEAKER_05: I don't really believe in any of their skill position guys, but they have to be better than what they were last year, right?
- 28:45SPEAKER_05: Like last year was bad.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: With this group, dude, I think we have the same teams.
- 28:50SPEAKER_01: Uh our our power rankings ended up being more similar than I expected them to be.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: Um, I have West Virginia at 11 as well.
- 28:55SPEAKER_01: I had them on that cusp.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: I was thinking that they might have been like in the same zone as OSU and Baylor, honestly, which they probably are, more or less.
- 29:03SPEAKER_01: Um, the tiers aren't like true stratified systems.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: So it's with with West Virginia, you're right.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: The year two in Rich Rod, it's just that guy has just got such a rebuild going on there, man, that it's I think it's gonna you're gonna need year three or four to see if it this this uh redo experiment's actually gonna work.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: So uh I'm I'm with you.
- 29:24SPEAKER_01: I they're they're they're so they're they're a mystery, but they're a mystery in a bad way.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: Like they're not really a mystery in like how gosh darn good they're gonna be.
- 29:31SPEAKER_01: It's more like, do they go bowling?
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: Are they good enough to do that this year kind of thing?
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: It's it's it's more that than are they gonna like fly out of nowhere and be like this West Virginia of old.
- 29:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean the good news is for them they play Kansas, they play Cincinnati, they play Iowa State, you know, they play Oklahoma State.
- 29:49SPEAKER_05: So they have chances.
- 29:52SPEAKER_05: They have chances to really, you know, get a couple good dubs out there.
- 29:55SPEAKER_05: They do play Virginia, who was decent last year.
- 29:59SPEAKER_05: I mean, I think they were top of the ACC.
- 30:01SPEAKER_05: Um they were they were in the championship game, but lost to Duke.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: Um that was a weird championship game.
- 30:09SPEAKER_05: The 2025 ACC was it was and then he had Miami sneak in and go all the way to the national championship.
- 30:15SPEAKER_05: It was a crazy conference, but um, I think they have a potential for like six to eight potentially wins.
- 30:23SPEAKER_05: Um I I don't know if if something goes right for them, they do have to play Houston, they do have to go to Utah, they have to go to Lubbock, they have to go to Fort Worth.
- 30:32SPEAKER_05: So they still have some some toughies on the schedule here.
- 30:35SPEAKER_05: So um yeah, I think I think they're in the right place for us.
- 30:38SPEAKER_05: So keep going down on your list since I already we know the remainder.
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: I think it's gonna be a bit of a split.
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: I at 12 in the same in the same sort of vote as West Virginia, and I'm sure a lot of people will disagree, is Colorado for me.
- 30:51SPEAKER_01: Like what you have what year three or is this year three or four for Dion with the buffs?
- 30:56SPEAKER_05: I think it's four, four or five.
- 30:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think you're right, because they had a year in the bit in the pack.
- 31:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh with Dion.
- 31:02SPEAKER_01: So that should give you a bit of a bump over some uh, you know, in pr in theory, I suppose, but it hasn't they've only been going down and down.
- 31:11SPEAKER_01: So I don't know, man.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: I maybe I'm just the uh a a simple sheep who's just like s gives some credence to the Dion hype and the sexiness of the Colorado Buffalo program, um, that they're just gonna find some store of star power that's enough to will them to possibly bowl bowl eligible.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: So I just I just personally don't think they're the absolute bottom.
- 31:35SPEAKER_01: I don't think they're I don't think they're Iowa State.
- 31:36SPEAKER_01: Spoiler is most what I'm saying.
- 31:39SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 31:39SPEAKER_05: Uh I have Colorado further down.
- 31:42SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, I don't I don't believe in this team at all.
- 31:46SPEAKER_05: Uh I don't their schedule's not great at the beginning of the year.
- 31:49SPEAKER_05: They play, I think Georgia Tech, Baylor, and um another like a Northwestern, which doesn't like scream at you as like a difficult schedule, but it's still like games that I could absolutely see them dropping.
- 32:02SPEAKER_01: They can lose against all of those.
- 32:03SPEAKER_05: They could lose all of them and just be completely bad.
- 32:06SPEAKER_05: So I don't believe in their quarterback.
- 32:08SPEAKER_05: I don't believe in their guys that they brought in.
- 32:11SPEAKER_05: They lost Jordan Seton in the uh transfer portal.
- 32:13SPEAKER_05: They lost the guy at Arizona State, the receiver that his name is escaping me right now.
- 32:18SPEAKER_05: Um and I I I don't believe in Colorado.
- 32:20SPEAKER_05: And I think Dion is just he's struggling with his own health.
- 32:24SPEAKER_05: You know, it seems like he's doing better.
- 32:27SPEAKER_05: It seems like he's doing better in that aspect, but um, I mean he's he definitely had a tumultuous 2025 with all of his health concerns and everything that went into that.
- 32:35SPEAKER_05: So um, yeah, I just don't see it for Colorado.
- 32:38SPEAKER_05: I think they're gonna probably be a bottom bottom three in the Big 12, I would say.
- 32:42SPEAKER_01: I think I think Colorado's tied to Dion for a long time, too.
- 32:45SPEAKER_01: Like, especially especially with the health stuff.
- 32:47SPEAKER_01: Like, what are you gonna do?
- 32:48SPEAKER_01: Fire the sick guy?
- 32:49SPEAKER_06: You know, it's it's it's like come on.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: So he brought that school more attention than they have had in decades anyway.
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: So I I don't I don't think I don't think he's gonna worse soon.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: So if you you want me to just go ahead and hit 13 for you?
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: So I got since I got Cincinnati and 13.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: Um, I think this is Satterfield's last year, uh, with with the Bearcats.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: I think this is gonna be, I mean, it's like kind of like Baylor, I or Dave Verand is also gonna be fired.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: I don't necessarily think it's gonna be ugly.
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: I don't think it's gonna be like, holy crap, this what a what a what a stealing pile of uh uh Cincinnati chili over there.
- 33:23SPEAKER_01: But I I think I I I just I don't see it, dude.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: There's nothing that screams from them from this program of Admi that says we're gonna do something.
- 33:33SPEAKER_01: Like it just to me just seems like a dead program rolling through the season at the moment.
- 33:37SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, I think it's a classic situation of your coaches just waiting to get axed um you know going into this year, and and obviously the loss of Brendan Soresby is a big deal for them.
- 33:47SPEAKER_05: Um no matter what way they want to twist it, uh he was a damn good quarterback.
- 33:51SPEAKER_05: And yeah, he gambled, and yeah, yada yada yada, but he was he's a good quarterback for them the last couple of years, and honestly, the only reason they won the amount of games that they won were because they had Brendan Sorsby there.
- 34:02SPEAKER_05: So um yeah, I don't see them replacing him very easily, and uh I just do not see the Bearcats having it having a good season.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: Nope.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: And at 14, I got the Kansas Jayhawks of Lawrence.
- 34:14SPEAKER_01: Um so this one's gonna be this one's gonna be tasty.
- 34:18SPEAKER_01: I think Kansas is gonna suck, dude.
- 34:20SPEAKER_01: I think they're gonna I think they're gonna be old school Kansas, like maybe three or four wins.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: You know, with the with the loss of their uh veterans veterans on on offense.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: I I just I don't see them being able to put together enough points to get across most anyone in the in this conference.
- 34:39SPEAKER_01: And I don't know what their out of conference looks like, but dude, I think Kansas is toast, and it's gonna be pretty nice to see uh uh uh Leopold just with all this egg all over his face after a crappy season.
- 34:50SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, you know, they lost uh they lost 10-year starter Jalen Daniels, finally gone, uh no longer in Lawrence, Kansas.
- 35:00SPEAKER_05: They did get the uh the running back Dylan Edwards from Kansas State last year, who was kind of a head case.
- 35:05SPEAKER_05: Uh, I think you would you would talk to some Kansas State fans and they would not be thrilled.
- 35:09SPEAKER_05: Definitely a talented kid, but not somebody who uh I think he was more worried about losing his eligibility than he was actually playing on the field after a poor start at Kansas State last year.
- 35:17SPEAKER_05: And um, you know, now he's in Lawrence, uh just across the way.
- 35:22SPEAKER_05: Um so I yeah, I don't see it for Kansas this year.
- 35:25SPEAKER_05: I I do think Lyopold's still a pretty good coach, uh, even though I I also share my my dislike for him um and all the crap that he pulled in Lubbock last year.
- 35:34SPEAKER_05: But um yeah, I I don't see it for for their team talent-wise.
- 35:38SPEAKER_05: I think they are going to revert to I I think it's just gonna get worse and worse for them, honestly.
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: I think I think we're gonna see the the decline of Lyopold.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: Like what he did at first was was obviously very impressive to make Kansas a competent football team.
- 35:52SPEAKER_01: Um, but I think I think that the the train has run out of steam here with with with him, and uh they're probably gonna be shopping around fairly soon, I think.
- 36:01SPEAKER_01: Um at 15, I've got the UCF Knights.
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: Um I maybe they're not 15, but I'll they're always gonna be your 15.
- 36:11SPEAKER_01: They're always gonna be my 15 because honestly hurt.
- 36:14SPEAKER_05: Tristan is a is a known hater of the UCF Knights.
- 36:17SPEAKER_01: I the having UCF in my conference just feels so Bush league, dude, in so many ways.
- 36:24SPEAKER_01: It frustrates me.
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: Um have you seen their stadium, dude?
- 36:28SPEAKER_05: Like I've seen the bounce houses.
- 36:30SPEAKER_01: That is a P6 state.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: I mean a P4 stadium, dude.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: G6.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: And it's I know well, yeah, of course it is a G6 stadium through and through, but I mean, but it's just like it's it's it's a scaffolding, it's a directional school.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: Like it's just there's there's a lot I have a lot of problems with it.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: Um including the including the the the crap that our fans like to talk.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Um so I just I I I don't I don't think this confrost redo is gonna work.
- 37:00SPEAKER_01: I think I think they could they might enjoy some years where they win six, seven games and they're excited to be back in the middle of the pack, if potentially kind of thing.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: But I I just don't see this this rocket getting off the ground, man.
- 37:14SPEAKER_01: I th I I think UCF is lab being lazy and completely uninspired by going back to Scott Ross, and they're gonna see that reflected on the football field.
- 37:24SPEAKER_05: I thought about putting UCF in my dark horse tier.
- 37:28SPEAKER_05: Um, I don't think they're gonna be the second to last place team in the con.
- 37:31SPEAKER_05: I think they're actually gonna get better this year from what they were last year.
- 37:36SPEAKER_05: Um, I think that defense is solid.
- 37:39SPEAKER_05: I I know, I know you don't like UCF.
- 37:41SPEAKER_05: You really, you really dislike UCF.
- 37:43SPEAKER_05: Uh I I think UCF's gonna be okay.
- 37:46SPEAKER_05: Uh, and I think they're gonna provide maybe a couple scares for some teams next year um in year two of Scott Frost.
- 37:53SPEAKER_05: Um, I don't love Scott Frost, but I do think that he did he does a pretty good job and knows that place pretty well at this point.
- 38:00SPEAKER_05: Um, and they brought in some some interesting transfers.
- 38:03SPEAKER_05: So I would put them more in the West Virginia side of this than the team that we're about to talk about next, the Iowa State Cyclones, which I think we both believe are gonna be the worst team in the conference.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: 100%, dude.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: I was uh I feel bad for Iowa State.
- 38:16SPEAKER_01: Um and but honestly, this in many ways, Iowa State was lucky they had Matt Campbell as long as they did.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: Um there was really no reason for him to be there that long, other than him just believing that program that he built himself.
- 38:32SPEAKER_01: Iowa State had never been as good as they were, ever, in their entire history.
- 38:38SPEAKER_01: Uh except for under uh Matt Campbell there.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: So it's it's really disappointing to see him go to Penn State.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: I think he's gonna rocket at Penn State.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: Um and but unfortunately he left behind a smoldering ruin of a football team.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: And apparently they're not gonna return a single starter on the team at all.
- 38:56SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they all went to Penn State.
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: Dude, honestly, I this might be one of the worst teams in FBS this year.
- 39:03SPEAKER_01: And it's really no fault of the coach uh that's coming in.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: I'm sure, I'm sure he's a fine guy, but Iowa State's got a lot of problems to work through.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: Um they're they're historically one of the worst programs in FBS.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: And you gotta keep you gotta ride the momentum of Campbell somehow.
- 39:22SPEAKER_01: You gotta find a way you can to to hop on that uh runaway train as best as you can before you slip so easily back into mediocrity at absolute best.
- 39:33SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 39:33SPEAKER_01: And I don't know what their NIL situation is, um, but I imagine it's not quite competitive compared to the top of the Big 12.
- 39:40SPEAKER_01: So it's I think our Cyclone friends are gonna be in for a dark period.
- 39:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, I think Iowa State does face a lot more challenges than a lot of other um schools in this conference right now.
- 39:54SPEAKER_05: Uh, and that's not to mention that they just lost their nine, whatever, eight or nine-year head coach that was at the mantle for so long.
- 40:02SPEAKER_05: What really sucks about that is that Penn State completely fell into Matt Campbell.
- 40:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and they shaded.
- 40:07SPEAKER_05: They struck out, they struck out on like four other guys before they wanted Matt Campbell, and all of a sudden, and it's it's okay.
- 40:14SPEAKER_05: You're still Penn State, and you can still go get the guy that was just at Iowa State for so long uh because you're in the Big Ten and because you're a high profile program or whatever.
- 40:22SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, I do feel bad for him.
- 40:24SPEAKER_05: I do like Jimmy Rogers, the new hire.
- 40:27SPEAKER_05: Um, he spent one year at Wazoo last year, did okay, did pretty good.
- 40:31SPEAKER_05: I dealt with a lot of injuries over there, um, and and they had uh you know kind of an up and down season, but that was his first year at that program, and now he's going back-to-back first year teams uh here with Iowa State.
- 40:43SPEAKER_05: And it's just the sheer amount of talent that they lost uh versus talent that they brought in from the transfer portal, which was basically their whole team.
- 40:51SPEAKER_05: So yeah, it's gonna take a couple years for Iowa State to get back.
- 40:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I don't I wouldn't say that it's going to be a long, long process potentially for them to get back uh to come to at least you know somewhat of a contender in the Big 12.
- 41:05SPEAKER_05: Um, but we'll just have to see.
- 41:06SPEAKER_05: I I I you know it was so late in the coaching cycle, it was so late in in the offseason that they had to just kind of revamp everything.
- 41:15SPEAKER_05: And uh, you know, Jamie Pollard's on the way out as well, their AD.
- 41:18SPEAKER_05: Um they they yeah, he this is his last year.
- 41:21SPEAKER_05: I think he announced it a week or so back, but uh he should have gone a while ago.
- 41:25SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean he's one of those old school guys who was still trying to hang on to the pre-NIL era, and I I think it's it's finally caught up to him over there.
- 41:32SPEAKER_04: He's said a lot of dumb things, yeah.
- 41:34SPEAKER_05: He yeah, he said a lot of stuff about Texas Tech 2 specifically that probably pissed off a lot of Red Raider fans.
- 41:40SPEAKER_05: But um, yeah, no, I I think Iowa State we might be seeing a 2025 Oklahoma State type of season out of them, potentially.
- 41:48SPEAKER_01: Wa wazoo to Iowa State, buddy likes a challenge.
- 41:52SPEAKER_01: He does he doesn't want an easy program.
- 41:56SPEAKER_05: It's definitely, I mean, it's definitely a step up, you know.
- 41:58SPEAKER_01: It's no app 1000% a step up.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's probably in every single way.
- 42:03SPEAKER_05: I hope he does well.
- 42:04SPEAKER_05: I'm looking at Iowa State's schedule.
- 42:06SPEAKER_05: They have to go to Iowa.
- 42:07SPEAKER_05: Uh, they play Utah in the first Big 12 game, then they play at BYU, at Arizona, Oklahoma State, at Baylor.
- 42:16SPEAKER_05: So, you know, it's not it's actually not the most difficult schedule, especially in the back end.
- 42:20SPEAKER_05: So maybe you could see them potentially squeezing out a couple wins at the end of the year.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: Uh I was about to say, I I I feel like, you know, the nice thing here is being being picked last is A, everyone's probably overlooking you.
- 42:33SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 42:33SPEAKER_01: You're not gonna get everybody's best.
- 42:36SPEAKER_01: Um, and B, you're a first year coach.
- 42:39SPEAKER_01: You're not some guy trying to save his job or something like that.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: You you you get to kind of bring in this new energy, this new era of hope.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: So I think you can potentially start laying some traps and maybe uh beating somebody out of absolutely no business doing so because he caught somebody sleeping.
- 42:56SPEAKER_01: So I I think there's absolute potential there.
- 42:59SPEAKER_05: Very nice.
- 43:00SPEAKER_05: Well, that's our tiers.
- 43:01SPEAKER_05: Uh the Big 12 will be interesting, and we will surely get some of this wrong uh going into the season.
- 43:07SPEAKER_05: Like uh who knows?
- 43:08SPEAKER_05: Oklahoma State could just be outrageous in year one and get a spot in the Big 12 conference championship.
- 43:15SPEAKER_05: We don't know.
- 43:15SPEAKER_01: I would say could pull in Arizona State and win it.
- 43:18SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 43:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was crazy.
- 43:20SPEAKER_01: What was it?
- 43:21SPEAKER_05: Three two years ago that Arizona State pulled that off, won the whole thing.
- 43:24SPEAKER_05: Crazy.
- 43:25SPEAKER_05: All right, man.
- 43:26SPEAKER_05: Let's talk about Texas Tech.
- 43:28SPEAKER_05: Because this is a Texas Tech podcast.
- 43:31SPEAKER_05: Uh we we enjoy it.
- 43:32SPEAKER_05: We are alumni.
- 43:33SPEAKER_05: Uh we're going to be watching these games, and uh, we'll just do a little quick run through the schedule, maybe give some predictions on how we think these are gonna shake out and uh and go from there.
- 43:44SPEAKER_01: I will say we didn't always really enjoy it.
- 43:49SPEAKER_05: No.
- 43:50SPEAKER_05: No, there were in fact, I'd say the majority of the time we haven't enjoyed it.
- 43:54SPEAKER_05: Uh but we enjoy it now, and that's what we can focus on.
- 43:58SPEAKER_05: We like it a whole lot now.
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: So things are good, vibes are high.
- 44:02SPEAKER_05: Game one, three weeks away.
- 44:04SPEAKER_01: Can it can I uh can I can I'll stage go ahead.
- 44:07SPEAKER_01: Can I please I I I have this expert three sentences here.
- 44:12SPEAKER_01: Go ahead.
- 44:14SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: So initial thoughts.
- 44:17SPEAKER_01: The schedule is not quite as easy as it's being made out to be in uh with with with common discourse.
- 44:22SPEAKER_01: And we're gonna unveil that as we proceed through our games here.
- 44:27SPEAKER_01: But I I think that narrative, A, comes from people already want to discount Texas Tech.
- 44:33SPEAKER_01: I think that there's gonna be a lot of people just wanting to undercut any accomplishment the Red Raiders have.
- 44:37SPEAKER_01: Because we're we are kind of the new bad boy on the block that people just want to, we're we're a villain that people like to hate right now.
- 44:42SPEAKER_01: Um, and B, I really think that most of that stems from any logical hate on our schedules mostly stems from the out of conference.
- 44:50SPEAKER_01: Because really, whenever we talk about the our the Big 12 games we play, if you want to if you went off our power rankings, it's not an easy, easy schedule at all.
- 45:00SPEAKER_01: So, like, and but what really stands out, what you're gonna see break with how we got lucky here, we really did, was our toughest games are indeed at home.
- 45:08SPEAKER_01: So that's we're gonna we're gonna definitely have to dig into that whenever we start talking.
- 45:11SPEAKER_01: Um, but I I really think that people are completely overblowing the quote unquote ease of our schedule.
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: What about you?
- 45:18SPEAKER_01: Any initial thoughts before we dive in?
- 45:20SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, I I would agree on the Big 12 part of that schedule.
- 45:24SPEAKER_05: Um, this was obviously it became a talking point when Sark basically called out tech at the beginning of the year and was like uh and was like, hey, you know, we don't play an easy schedule like some of these other contenders um that are being talked about as national title or CFP or whatever.
- 45:40SPEAKER_05: And uh yeah, we don't have the same schedule as a lot of the SEC teams.
- 45:44SPEAKER_05: Um, but the Big 12 schedule itself is pretty difficult.
- 45:47SPEAKER_05: I mean, just from the tiers that we went down, we play all four of those tier two teams that I had in mind.
- 45:52SPEAKER_05: You know, the Houston, TCU, Arizona, Arizona State, we play all of them.
- 45:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we don't play BYU, which is expected to be kind of the number two in the Big 12, potentially even the number one to some people.
- 46:02SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, we avoid Utah, which is usually a good thing.
- 46:06SPEAKER_05: We don't know with Utah this year what they're gonna be.
- 46:09SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, and then um you you don't get the opportunity to play some of the really bad teams.
- 46:16SPEAKER_05: You know, you don't get UCF, you don't get Kansas, you don't get Iowa State.
- 46:19SPEAKER_05: So you don't get any of them, you know, you don't get, but you do get Cincinnati, you know, you do get Colorado, you do get West Virginia.
- 46:25SPEAKER_05: So um when when you're talking about like because I think there was something that came out about tech having the weakest strength of schedule of the power four teams.
- 46:34SPEAKER_05: And yeah, I I mean you also have to account for that Texas Tech doesn't have to play Texas Tech, you know, as a part of the Big 12, you know, they don't have to and and avoiding BYU definitely helps that narrative of of you know contenders having the weaker schedule.
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: So yeah, it's a it's important to remember that this is all preseason as well.
- 46:54SPEAKER_01: Like we could go into the season and every team we play was actually awesome.
- 46:58SPEAKER_05: Oh, absolutely.
- 47:00SPEAKER_01: It could break that way.
- 47:01SPEAKER_01: So it's just again, I I think most of it is is like political.
- 47:06SPEAKER_01: Like they're trying their best to discount Texas Tech for you know, A, just to you know hurt the competition, but B, it's all everything in this sport comes down to playoff spots at this point.
- 47:16SPEAKER_01: So they're just trying to lay down some groundwork.
- 47:18SPEAKER_01: Hey, if tech loses a game, they better not be in the playoffs kind of thing, you know.
- 47:21SPEAKER_01: So it's just gonna just be played out that way.
- 47:23SPEAKER_01: So we get we gotta be weary.
- 47:24SPEAKER_01: And so, spoiler alert, I think that Texas Tech really wants to go undefeated this year, and I think they absolutely can.
- 47:33SPEAKER_01: I I think I might I think we're gonna go 12-0 whenever I look at the schedule, but the rational part of me thinks we're gonna drop a game.
- 47:40SPEAKER_01: But I I don't I don't want I I'm sure you uh you actually have us losing a game in our breakdown here, in our our our quick overview here, so you can save it for that if you want.
- 47:49SPEAKER_05: You think you know me?
- 47:51SPEAKER_05: Um no, I think the last thing I just want to say about preseason predictions, you want to date your preseason predictions, you want to maybe take them out for a nice drink.
- 48:00SPEAKER_05: You don't want to marry your preseason predictions.
- 48:02SPEAKER_05: Too often people get married to what they think is going to happen and what the narratives that they institute throughout the the three, four months that we do not have this sport in our lives.
- 48:11SPEAKER_05: So, you know, we we're over here stirring in our brains, oh, this is going to be the case.
- 48:16SPEAKER_05: I feel so strongly about how good BYU, how good, how terrible UCF is gonna be, you know.
- 48:22SPEAKER_05: But until we actually see football played, that's when you have to completely just be open to switching up what we just talked about.
- 48:28SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 48:29SPEAKER_01: People don't want to be wrong, they don't like to be wrong.
- 48:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, these are fun, but you don't get married to your preseason um expectations and and predictions.
- 48:36SPEAKER_05: So uh moving down the schedule, game one, three weeks away, beautiful Lubbock, Texas on September.
- 48:45SPEAKER_05: West Texas showdown, the rematch from a few years back against the Abilene Christian Wildcats, who Texas Tech seven and three all-time record against the Abilene Christian Wildcats.
- 48:58SPEAKER_05: I wish that was better.
- 49:00SPEAKER_01: Um has to be from like the early 20s.
- 49:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, when it comes to the all-time stuff, you never really know, but uh, but yeah, seven and three all-time versus the Abilene Christian Wildcats.
- 49:11SPEAKER_05: Um, ACU last year, nine and five, good season, seven and one in conference.
- 49:16SPEAKER_01: They went they went to the playoffs.
- 49:17SPEAKER_05: They had a good day to good year, ACU.
- 49:20SPEAKER_05: Um, head coach Keith Patterson, OC Graham Harrell.
- 49:24SPEAKER_05: You're familiar with both of these guys uh in different capacities.
- 49:28SPEAKER_05: Um you know, they we're gonna win.
- 49:31SPEAKER_05: Texas Tech's gonna win.
- 49:33SPEAKER_01: Hey, so does this time much the nightmare last time, bro?
- 49:36SPEAKER_01: The big part of the nightmare was like their entire team was was tech transfers.
- 49:41SPEAKER_01: So they played it with like that jaded saltiness of a rejected girl, uh rejected boyfriend kind of thing.
- 49:48SPEAKER_01: So do do we have that same problem, do you know?
- 49:51SPEAKER_05: They have three former Red Raiders on their team.
- 49:54SPEAKER_01: So not not extreme.
- 49:56SPEAKER_05: No, but Jaden York, who was a tight end for you for a year, he was like a third string guy, didn't really play.
- 50:01SPEAKER_05: Caden Car, who never got on the field, was an offensive lineman, and uh Isaiah Crawford, who was actually a four-star commit from post, who you were pretty excited to get, but I think ultimately just never broke the mold here uh at Texas Tech, and so decided to transfer this past offseason to ACU.
- 50:16SPEAKER_01: Um, a soft swap for ACU.
- 50:19SPEAKER_01: I feel like ACU is kind of like the AFCS Texas Tech.
- 50:23SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean I don't have any and I like Keith Patterson.
- 50:25SPEAKER_05: You know, we love Graham Harrell over here in Lubbock, Texas.
- 50:29SPEAKER_01: So But we are going to annihilate them.
- 50:31SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 50:32SPEAKER_01: It's not gonna be the same game.
- 50:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah, when we when we get into the actual preview, we'll talk about it more.
- 50:37SPEAKER_05: But uh apparently they had a quarterback that was slated to be the starter for them leave this fall.
- 50:41SPEAKER_05: Uh I don't know for if he'd decide to transfer, just not play football anymore.
- 50:45SPEAKER_05: I don't I don't really know, but they're gonna be starting a sophomore at quarterback uh at ACU, and uh, you know, they have to go into Lubbock.
- 50:53SPEAKER_05: And uh as much as people don't want to believe this or want to like you know crack up because we played a tight game with them a couple years ago, this is not the same Texas tech.
- 51:01SPEAKER_05: It's just not, even from two years ago.
- 51:03SPEAKER_05: Like you're you're a much different program.
- 51:06SPEAKER_05: You've actually accomplished you know the things that you've said that you're going to accomplish, which is win the Big 12 and make the college football playoff.
- 51:14SPEAKER_05: Um, now you're hoping for bigger and better things, but this is not the same Texas tech that has a chance to even play a tight with an ACU.
- 51:20SPEAKER_01: And you're not playing the mythical Maverick McGiver either.
- 51:26SPEAKER_05: He does in fact exist.
- 51:29SPEAKER_01: He showed us he does exist.
- 51:31SPEAKER_05: Good for him.
- 51:32SPEAKER_05: Good for him.
- 51:33SPEAKER_05: That that dude that dude did the darn thing.
- 51:36SPEAKER_01: So you you made me write up prediction scores for these dang games.
- 51:41SPEAKER_01: Do it, don't you?
- 51:42SPEAKER_01: No, I want to hear the Rodriguez bowl of Texas Tech versus Abilene Christian.
- 51:47SPEAKER_05: I have 56 to 7 Texas Tech.
- 51:50SPEAKER_01: I have 17 to 56.
- 51:52SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay.
- 51:52SPEAKER_05: You got them scored, you got them scored some points.
- 51:54SPEAKER_05: You got them scored some points.
- 51:55SPEAKER_01: I do.
- 51:56SPEAKER_01: I I I think A, they're gonna get some points at garbage time, but B, it's the first game.
- 52:01SPEAKER_01: You know, it you you're gonna they're gonna they're gonna get stuff they wouldn't like it in the 10th game of the season.
- 52:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I think that's fair.
- 52:08SPEAKER_05: Uh I I put 56 to 7 because I just don't see a way that AC scores on this defense.
- 52:15SPEAKER_05: And um yeah, and I think that's where they get their one touchdown is maybe in the fourth quarter.
- 52:19SPEAKER_05: Uh moving on to unless did you have any more to say about AC?
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: I've got nothing else thought.
- 52:26SPEAKER_05: Moving on.
- 52:27SPEAKER_05: Uh September 12th.
- 52:30SPEAKER_05: You go on the road to Corvallis, Oregon, where you are 2-0 all time versus the Oregon State Beavers.
- 52:39SPEAKER_02: 100.
- 52:40SPEAKER_05: Oregon State last year, you played them and you annihilated them.
- 52:44SPEAKER_05: You won 45-14 in Lubbock, Texas in 2025.
- 52:48SPEAKER_05: Oregon State in 2025 was 2-10.
- 52:51SPEAKER_05: Uh and one and one in the Pac-12, one and one, 500 in their conference matchups in the two games that they played against Washington State.
- 52:59SPEAKER_05: Um Oregon State's not good.
- 53:04SPEAKER_05: Uh there, they have a new head coach, Jamarcus Shepherd.
- 53:07SPEAKER_05: Uh, this is this man's first time being a collegiate head coach.
- 53:10SPEAKER_05: He's been uh associate head coach, positional coach at some high-level universities.
- 53:15SPEAKER_05: Was it Alabama last year?
- 53:17SPEAKER_05: Um I I think just they're returning Malik Murphy.
- 53:21SPEAKER_05: He he's you know an experienced quarterback.
- 53:23SPEAKER_05: Was it Texas for a time, was it Duke, was at Oregon State last year?
- 53:26SPEAKER_05: Um, had a had a bad game against uh against the Texas Tech Red Raiders in 2025.
- 53:33SPEAKER_05: The one thing I'll point out here about Oregon State is Houston last year, a good Houston team, 10-3 Houston, went two Corvallis in the non-conference and only won by three.
- 53:45SPEAKER_05: It was 27-24.
- 53:46SPEAKER_05: It was a really scary tight game for the Houston Cougars.
- 53:51SPEAKER_05: And that's the only part of this that worries me is that we're going on the road.
- 53:55SPEAKER_05: And it's going moving two time zones early on in the season.
- 53:59SPEAKER_05: You don't quite know who you are yet, and you're going to a power level opponent, you know, quote unquote, um in Oregon State, who I think is expected to be pretty bad again, but still, we've seen bad teams end up giving us some scares in the past.
- 54:17SPEAKER_05: So I think it's kind of the internal trigger that I have from being a Texas Tech fan of just like looking at this game and saying, oh, could be scary when ultimately I think we're just gonna kill them.
- 54:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I I this this game will not be close.
- 54:32SPEAKER_01: Um, I will say, first off, can I just mention that the Oregon State Beavers is an awesome brand?
- 54:38SPEAKER_05: Perfect.
- 54:39SPEAKER_05: It's perfect for that for that city, it's perfect for Oregon, it's great.
- 54:43SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 54:44SPEAKER_01: But B, you know, I I I totally get the the scare of like what they gave Houston last year, and apparently they play Houston again this year.
- 54:51SPEAKER_01: Um and my I guess another hang up is is like you are gonna be the best game on their schedule at home.
- 55:01SPEAKER_01: Like they're if their fans are gonna show out to anything, especially at the beginning of the year, that will be the game.
- 55:06SPEAKER_01: Um I don't know how invested those fans are gonna be at that point, but it's you know, you're you're gonna be hosting what maybe a probably a top 15 team at least.
- 55:15SPEAKER_01: So, you know, it that's something to get excited for and you get for the team to get fired up to play.
- 55:20SPEAKER_01: So I I do that does draw some concern, especially in the second game on the road, very far away.
- 55:26SPEAKER_01: Um, but uh I just I think we're gonna kill them.
- 55:31SPEAKER_01: I think I I I have us winning 42 to 12.
- 55:34SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 55:35SPEAKER_05: Uh I have us, I think our offense is gonna sputter a little bit just from being on the road and it being early.
- 55:40SPEAKER_05: Um, I have us 35-14, so still doing you know, pretty good work, but definitely not scoring as much as you would like to against what this team is uh is expected to be.
- 55:51SPEAKER_05: So I have 35-14 Texas Tech winning this one.
- 55:53SPEAKER_05: So we're both at 2-0 to start off the year.
- 55:56SPEAKER_05: Uh, I think we're all pretty happy and expected to be 2-0 going into week three, which is the first test and might be your biggest test all season long.
- 56:07SPEAKER_05: Very similar to Utah last year, where your first Big 12 game was kind of like, oh, okay, I guess we're in it now.
- 56:14SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, you go play your cupcakes and then all of a sudden it's boom, let's do this.
- 56:18SPEAKER_05: Um, University of Houston on a Friday night, you and I will be in attendance for this one on the 18th of September.
- 56:26SPEAKER_05: Houston, right now, interesting.
- 56:28SPEAKER_05: Uh, 17 and 18 all time.
- 56:31SPEAKER_05: So they have a one-win uh advantage over you as a university all-time in this in the sport of football.
- 56:39SPEAKER_05: So you're looking to tie the overall record all-timer against the Houston Cougars.
- 56:44SPEAKER_05: Um Houston last year, 10-3, like we mentioned, six and three in conference um in 2025.
- 56:50SPEAKER_05: Uh, lost last year to Texas Tech in Lubbock.
- 56:54SPEAKER_05: No, I'm sorry.
- 56:54SPEAKER_05: It was in Houston, um, 35 to 11.
- 56:57SPEAKER_05: So got beat pretty good.
- 56:59SPEAKER_05: Uh, not the best offensive showing from the Red Raiders, but definitely the defense showed out.
- 57:03SPEAKER_05: Um, Connor Wigman did get hurt in that game, and they did have to go to their backup for a bit.
- 57:08SPEAKER_05: Um, but overall, you just dominated the Cougars last year um early on in the season.
- 57:13SPEAKER_05: But yeah, I mean, I I I like this Houston team.
- 57:16SPEAKER_05: We just talked about them.
- 57:16SPEAKER_05: I think they're gonna be top of the Big 12, definitely a contender here, and this game, it does scare you.
- 57:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, it's it's funny, you know, it's the it's like dead even they have a slight advantage over us.
- 57:28SPEAKER_01: Houston had some killer teams in the Southwest Conference back in the day, um, with some big names.
- 57:32SPEAKER_01: Um, and dude, tip of that, 10 and 3.
- 57:36SPEAKER_01: What an awesome year.
- 57:39SPEAKER_01: And that's the what only year two or three at the power four level.
- 57:42SPEAKER_05: You know, yeah, well, that was two year two of Willie Fritz, and they were already 10 and 3.
- 57:47SPEAKER_01: Houston was such a no-brainer whenever you're you were expanding with G6 teams.
- 57:52SPEAKER_01: So it's it's they're they're obviously kicking uh clicking as they should.
- 57:56SPEAKER_01: Um this is gonna be a really tough one, dude.
- 57:59SPEAKER_01: Um I if you're going to give us an L, especially if you're gonna try to find an L at home, this is the one.
- 58:05SPEAKER_01: I I obviously whenever you're trying to find uh a loss on the schedule for a really good team that's expected to possibly go undefeated, you're probably looking at the away games.
- 58:14SPEAKER_01: But Houston might just be that good that this might be the only trap, not even a trap, this might be the only challenge that is capable of taking you down.
- 58:24SPEAKER_01: So with that said, I think that TechStech does win, but I think the home crowd will wills them to the win.
- 58:32SPEAKER_01: I think it's gonna be a 21 to 24 slug fest.
- 58:37SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 58:38SPEAKER_05: I I like that take.
- 58:40SPEAKER_05: Uh Houston definitely has a solid defense going in.
- 58:43SPEAKER_05: I think it's their stronger side of the ball if you're just talking offense defense for Houston.
- 58:47SPEAKER_05: Um I think Texas Tech is going to be very motivated to win this game.
- 58:52SPEAKER_05: Um I I don't I don't know for sure, but it seems like when Joey's been talking about, you know, all the stuff that Texas Tech has received, all the hate, all the pushback, all of that from from Big 12 teams and other teams and uh the national college football landscape as a whole.
- 59:08SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, he's mentioned his buddies in the Big 12, the coaching buddies.
- 59:12SPEAKER_05: Uh Dillingham, Sataki, you know, he's he's good buds with Dion and Rich Rod.
- 59:17SPEAKER_05: He knows those guys pretty well.
- 59:18SPEAKER_05: And they they obviously, Eric Morris, they voiced their support for Joey during that time.
- 59:23SPEAKER_05: I think Willie Fritz is a notable guy uh that he left out of those conversations because I think he's a very old school type of feel, and he's also coaching in the state of Texas.
- 59:33SPEAKER_05: It's very similar to a Sonny Dykes, you know, where he's probably not gonna, you know, be buddy buddy with Joey Maguire because he wants to beat him.
- 59:40SPEAKER_05: And I think Joey might have taken that and might use that as any sort of motivation um here for Texas Tech.
- 59:47SPEAKER_05: And also it just having the natural motivation of it being your first Big 12 game of the season, and you know, you're trying to set the precedent against Houston, who's being hyped up as a pretty good team.
- 59:56SPEAKER_05: So um I have no worries actually about this game in terms of what I think is going to actually happen.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_05: I'm not denying that Houston's a good team.
- 1:00:05SPEAKER_05: I'm not denying that they're very talented and they are one of the tougher opponents on your schedule.
- 1:00:10SPEAKER_05: I think Texas Tech's gonna be extremely motivated to win this one, and I think they win 34 to 20 in the world.
- 1:00:15SPEAKER_05: Oh nice.
- 1:00:16SPEAKER_01: Heck yeah.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_01: And something to be noted here is this is gonna be a ranked matchup.
- 1:00:21SPEAKER_01: Like, unless Houston just completely embarrasses themselves in the preseason, this will be a ranked matchup.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_01: So this will be a big deal.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_01: This will be on national television.
- 1:00:29SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, so speaking of Houston, you go to the real Houston in in week four on the 26th of September, two and oh all time versus the Sam Houston State Bearcats.
- 1:00:46SPEAKER_05: Uh 2 and 10 last year, uh, one and seven in their bad, dude.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_05: They were bad, bad.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_04: They were like they were so bad.
- 1:00:56SPEAKER_05: Sam Houston State, like I uh you know, family.
- 1:00:59SPEAKER_05: I've had family that's gone to Sam Houston State, and uh I remember talking to them about the jump when they made the jump to FBS, and they were so upset.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_05: They were so upset when they made the jump.
- 1:01:10SPEAKER_05: They were like, we're an FCS like power, we're doing awesome in the FCS.
- 1:01:16SPEAKER_05: And now we're moving up, and we don't have the resources to compete in this new higher level of competition, and it's not gonna be good.
- 1:01:23SPEAKER_05: And guess what?
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_05: It hasn't been good for Sam Houston State, and uh I feel bad for him.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_05: Uh, this is a I have us winning 63-2-3.
- 1:01:33SPEAKER_03: Holy crap!
- 1:01:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I have us riding off, riding off after uh uh pretty high after the Houston win and uh just going in and killing Sam Houston State the next day.
- 1:01:42SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, dude.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_01: That's that's hilarious.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_01: You know, it all those all those points about Sam Houston are so valid.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_01: Um in expect you you you don't even have to look any further than just seeing their stadium.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like that is um that's not enough, but it's a high school field.
- 1:01:56SPEAKER_01: It's a high school field.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 1:01:58SPEAKER_05: And they're doing some rentos, they're doing rentos, they're getting, you know.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I I hate whenever fans say, oh, it's a high school stadium, and they're talking about like a 60,000 capacity stadium, you know.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_01: But no, you see Sam Houston States, it is it is a high school stadium.
- 1:02:14SPEAKER_01: And there's nothing wrong with that, with with the level of they were at with FCS.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_01: You know, you don't necessarily need all the bells and whistles at that level.
- 1:02:21SPEAKER_01: Um, but it's just crazy.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_01: But you you get it.
- 1:02:24SPEAKER_01: Like there's there's gonna be just such a cutoff coming in this sport that they're just trying to scrape into any sort of relevance in the game they can.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_01: I understand.
- 1:02:34SPEAKER_01: Tarlatons doing the same thing.
- 1:02:36SPEAKER_01: Um what you got?
- 1:02:38SPEAKER_05: Score prediction.
- 1:02:39SPEAKER_05: Score predictions.
- 1:02:40SPEAKER_01: I mine is a lot different from yours.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_01: I have them putting up 17 in garbage time um to and us putting up 47 on them.
- 1:02:49unknown: Okay.
- 1:02:50SPEAKER_01: I think I think we're gonna pull Will and the starting offense out at like half.
- 1:02:53SPEAKER_01: Like they're gonna just go straight up, and then we're just gonna like kind of play around with the backups and do you over in the first quarter.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_01: And that's a good take.
- 1:03:03SPEAKER_05: That's a good take.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_05: I think the same music state game is gonna be very similar to what Pine Bluff was last year or what uh Kent State.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_05: I know it's not Pine Bluff.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_05: I know they're not that bad, but I think the results can be very similar in just an absolute, I think, for this head coach.
- 1:03:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and I think I think even when you put in your backups uh and you put in uh potentially Chubb or uh or the Tulsa King, um, I I think you can still kill them.
- 1:03:30SPEAKER_05: Kirky franchise.
- 1:03:32SPEAKER_01: I don't want you to think that my score prediction is like gonna show a different game than this one.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_01: It's gonna be it's gonna be a bloodbath.
- 1:03:38SPEAKER_01: It's just we're gonna stop scoring, basically.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we're just gonna cruise, cruise in the second half.
- 1:03:43SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I get you.
- 1:03:44SPEAKER_05: Um moving on to week five, first game of October.
- 1:03:47SPEAKER_05: Interesting, um, interesting matchup against the Buffs in Boulder.
- 1:03:52SPEAKER_05: Uh, much like Houston, they have a one-game advantage in the all-time series.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_05: They are uh six and five.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_05: Colorado is over over the Red Raiders.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_05: So you're looking at the Big 12.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_05: Yes, you're you're looking to tie up the all-time series with the Buffaloes in this one.
- 1:04:06SPEAKER_05: Um, last year, three and nine, one and eight in the Big 12.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_05: Uh, not a good year from Colorado.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_05: We already mentioned it.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_05: Um, the one thing I'll say about this, I have it on good authority that if Colorado is okay at the beginning of the year, and they win maybe two out of three of the Northwestern Georgia Tech Baylor games before the Texas Tech one, I think you could see a certain pregame show going to Boulder that week, um, which could add some extra motivation in a bad way for Texas Tech here.
- 1:04:43SPEAKER_05: Um, and I could, you know, potentially I I I what I'll say, I will understand it if there are Red Raider fans that look at this game and it scares them.
- 1:04:55SPEAKER_05: I understand it.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_05: Personally, I still think we're gonna route them, but I can see you looking at this game on the schedule and being like, it kind of freaks me out.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_01: So something to remember about all these away games is at this point you might be top ten.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_01: So these places are gonna be rockin'.
- 1:05:17SPEAKER_01: And there's a good chance that you're at night, so you can be on national television and all that.
- 1:05:22SPEAKER_01: Um so I'm with you, dude.
- 1:05:24SPEAKER_01: I think each one of our road trips is gonna be facing crowds that Texas Tech has never experienced before.
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_01: As like being because the the crowd's gonna be there to see you lose.
- 1:05:35SPEAKER_01: You know, like they're they're they're they're there to push their team over you rather than them cheering on a good team that's just a raucous crowd.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_01: Um, so it's gonna be different for Texas Attack going to all these places this year, unlike we anything we've ever experienced, probably truly.
- 1:05:50SPEAKER_01: So I think it's gonna be a close issue game.
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_01: I think Texas Tech is gonna win thirty eight to twenty four.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_01: So I think it's gonna be multiple scores.
- 1:06:00SPEAKER_01: But I don't think Tex fans are ever going to be super comfortable the entire game.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_05: I'm going to contradict myself a little bit from what I just said.
- 1:06:08SPEAKER_05: When you're talking about getting a certain pregame show coming to your game and uh, you know, the hype, maybe a night game, maybe you know, stuff keeps building.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_05: This year, Joey Maguire is going to eat that shit up.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_05: In any way that he can use to motivate his team, he is going to use.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_05: And we've seen it from last year.
- 1:06:30SPEAKER_05: Literally any random podcast that doubts him, he will clip that and show it to the team.
- 1:06:37SPEAKER_05: He will do that.
- 1:06:38SPEAKER_05: And when people start talking about, oh, they have to go to Boulder and it's a night game, and you never know, and Colorado, maybe a little better than you expected.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_05: Maybe we could see an upset here.
- 1:06:47SPEAKER_05: I think Joey McGuire gets the fellas going.
- 1:06:50SPEAKER_05: I think it's 42-17 Texas Tech.
- 1:06:53SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love that, dude.
- 1:06:55SPEAKER_01: You are you're you're saying you're just laxing.
- 1:06:57SPEAKER_01: We're busting out the paddle and spanking some butts, dude.
- 1:07:00SPEAKER_05: I think we're going hard in this uh at the beginning of the season here.
- 1:07:03SPEAKER_05: I think Joey's on one.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_05: I think he this offseason really upset him uh with how much pushback that tech got from from Soresby, from everything.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, absolutely, dude.
- 1:07:15SPEAKER_01: So you ready to move on to Arizona State?
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_05: We will move on, but before Arizona State, you have a bye week.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_05: This is your bye week.
- 1:07:21SPEAKER_05: Uh, it's at the beginning of the year uh after week five.
- 1:07:24SPEAKER_05: So, you know, you go your first five games and then you kind of have to play out your one, two, three, four, five, six, seven last seven games of the year with no bye weeks, no breaks, and it's all Big 12 teams.
- 1:07:35SPEAKER_05: So this is where your schedule gets a little more difficult, just in terms of, you know, you're halfway through the season, guys are you know starting to get beat up a little bit, and uh, you know, maybe you're playing with some without some of your best players, you know.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_05: It it just depends how the season goes for you.
- 1:07:50SPEAKER_05: But um on the 17th of October, you host Arizona State, who right now, all-time record, completely tied three and three.
- 1:08:01SPEAKER_05: I'm so I'm surprised.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_05: You've only played this school six times.
- 1:08:04SPEAKER_05: So weird, dude.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:08:05SPEAKER_01: We used to share the border conference with them.
- 1:08:08SPEAKER_05: Well, the crazy thing is you played Arizona 30-something times, like 32, 33 times.
- 1:08:14SPEAKER_05: Arizona State, you've only played six times in your in your history.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_05: Last year, of course, the one loss on your Big 12 schedule was uh was Arizona State and Tempe, a 26-22 win um over the Red Raiders.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_05: They were eight and five last year, six and three in conference.
- 1:08:30SPEAKER_05: Um this is a good team.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_05: The the Arizona State game will always scare me.
- 1:08:35SPEAKER_05: I don't, I think, no matter what, just because I believe in Dillingham that much, um this will be an exciting one.
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_05: I think this will be your first real close game of the year.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:08:45SPEAKER_01: I I would have assumed I would assume it's it's it's Houston.
- 1:08:48SPEAKER_01: Um, but you know, it's interesting, like you said, like how we played them so little.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_01: I think in the border conference dates, I think it was just like a scheduling format where you always saw Arizona, not Arizona State.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_01: Um, so I'm with you, dude.
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_01: I this has been the game that decides who's gonna win the Big 12 these past two years.
- 1:09:03SPEAKER_01: Don't think that's gonna be the case this year, except for us winning the game and inevitably winning the Big 12 championship.
- 1:09:09SPEAKER_01: Um but it's uh I I I do think that this will be a closest closest closest game um just because of what that was a tough to get out there.
- 1:09:22SPEAKER_05: Three times you didn't you didn't get it on any of the three times.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_01: I didn't get through.
- 1:09:24SPEAKER_01: I'm just I'm just abandoning it, dude.
- 1:09:26SPEAKER_01: We gotta gotta move on.
- 1:09:27SPEAKER_05: We'll move on.
- 1:09:30SPEAKER_01: But um I I'm with you.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_01: I for whatever reason, these have been some games.
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_01: So I I don't expect it to be any different this year.
- 1:09:38SPEAKER_01: I expect this game to be a two-score difference, but it's gonna be 28-14 Texas Tech.
- 1:09:45SPEAKER_05: I have 24 to 14 Texas Tech.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_05: Um, so still beating them by multiple multiple scores, but um, you know, definitely a little uh a little too close for a game in Lubbock, Texas, I think is we're gonna come out of this one like okay, we can we can be beat a little bit.
- 1:10:02SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, you'll you'll hopefully clean up some flaws after what we think is going to happen in this one.
- 1:10:07SPEAKER_05: Still getting a dub, by the way, but um at this point, you are looking at one, two, three, four, five, six and oh Texas Tech after the Arizona State game.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_05: We're both in agreement on that.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_05: Um moving on to the next week.
- 1:10:22SPEAKER_05: I don't think that trend is going to change with uh the Brendan Soresby Bowl.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_05: Um 10-24, the 24th of October.
- 1:10:30SPEAKER_05: You are visiting Cincinnati, Ohio, where you are 1-0 all time versus the Cincinnati Bearcats.
- 1:10:37SPEAKER_05: You played them once in your history, and it was the inaugural game, yeah.
- 1:10:41SPEAKER_05: The couple years ago where Cincinnati came to Lubbock and uh took us down to the wire and it took a game-winning field goal.
- 1:10:47SPEAKER_05: Uh, and that that was my introduction to Brendan Soresby.
- 1:10:51SPEAKER_05: That was like this guy is actually a damn good quarterback.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_05: And listeners know they know if they've been listening since then, they know that I've been a I've been a Soresby guy, and that's why this offseason was just so it was, you know, we talk about how bad it was on the tech organization and Joey McGuire.
- 1:11:08SPEAKER_05: It was horrible on me, okay?
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_05: Personally, your narrative stuff, my narrative was crushed due to gambling, and um, I think we should probably just ban all gambling ever uh because of this.
- 1:11:20SPEAKER_05: So um, but besides the point, Cincinnati, seven and six last year, five and four in the Big 12 uh in 2025.
- 1:11:28SPEAKER_05: Um, this game would have been much more interesting if Brendan Sorsby was on the team.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it would have.
- 1:11:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, this would have been more motivation for them to bring their A game.
- 1:11:39SPEAKER_05: Uh, I I still think Cincinnati does not like Texas Tech.
- 1:11:42SPEAKER_05: Uh, I still think that the students are still going to show out for this game, and it is going to be a raucous environment.
- 1:11:48SPEAKER_05: I do think, uh, but also you're dealing with Texas Tech, who we both believe are going to be 6-0 at this point and a top 10 team in the country.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_05: So every away fan base is going to show up for that game.
- 1:11:59SPEAKER_05: Um, but I despite all that, I have uh I have the Red Raiders uh pretty much handling the Bearcats uh 35 to 7.
- 1:12:08SPEAKER_01: Am I allowed to be adjusting scores as I've gone to cheating?
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_05: Hey dude, you do what you know the the great thing about having a podcast is you could do whatever the hell you want.
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_01: You know, it's the the issue here was I wasn't giving us enough routes.
- 1:12:23SPEAKER_01: Like I was giving I was making everything way too close.
- 1:12:26SPEAKER_01: I was like, that's not fun.
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we're looking at a paper here, dude.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_05: I can I can make us you can do whatever the hell you want, man.
- 1:12:33SPEAKER_05: It's your world.
- 1:12:34SPEAKER_01: But I honestly I do I do think my change is a little more logical.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_01: Um I I can't treat every single road game like it's gonna be a tough one because that's just not how the sport works.
- 1:12:45SPEAKER_01: There is blowouts all the time.
- 1:12:47SPEAKER_01: Um, so I'm gonna go 40 to 22 in this game.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_01: Text tech red raiders.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_05: There you go.
- 1:12:53SPEAKER_05: So you haven't put it up 22 though.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:12:56SPEAKER_05: I mean, you know, that's not I have them, I have them 35 to 7.
- 1:12:59SPEAKER_05: So I have them just being absolutely demolished on the defensive side of the ball and not getting anything going.
- 1:13:05SPEAKER_05: Their quarterback play, I think, is going to be just terrible this year.
- 1:13:09SPEAKER_05: Uh, we might be seeing a coach list in interim at this point.
- 1:13:13SPEAKER_05: Well, that's true.
- 1:13:14SPEAKER_01: If it is, then change the scores to like 80 to 2.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_05: They got that safety though.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_05: They got that safety.
- 1:13:21SPEAKER_05: They got that safety, though.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_05: They can always hang their head on that.
- 1:13:24SPEAKER_05: So uh we're looking at 7-0 Texas Tech right now from both of us, and it's only scaring me a lot that we're both predicting 7-0 Texas Tech.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_05: It will always happen.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_01: I've already spoiled very much what I've what I've done.
- 1:13:37SPEAKER_01: And for most, it's actually rational.
- 1:13:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_05: Halloween weekend, we move on back to Lubbock, Texas, hosting what we both think is going to be a pretty decent team in the Arizona Wildcats.
- 1:13:51SPEAKER_05: Um, 27-2-5 all time over the Arizona Wildcats.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_05: So you have quite the overwhelming win advantage.
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_01: We spanked that ass.
- 1:14:01SPEAKER_05: We spanked that ass in the border days.
- 1:14:03SPEAKER_05: In the border days, we absolutely own this team, and uh, we are 1-0 since they have joined the Big 12 conference in a very exciting game in Tucson on our last matchup where J-Rodd uh did his signature punch out fumble of uh Tetaroa McMillan, and uh we ended up winning that game at uh I believe we were staying up until like 2 a.m.
- 1:14:23SPEAKER_05: to watch that one because it was like a 10 p.m.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_05: like like central time kickoff or whatever.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_05: It was crazy.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_05: Um Arizona last year, as we mentioned, pretty good season, 9-4, 6-3 in the Big 12.
- 1:14:36SPEAKER_05: Um, I had this being tight.
- 1:14:38SPEAKER_05: I think this is gonna be a tight game.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_05: Uh, and and I know it's in Lubbock.
- 1:14:42SPEAKER_05: I know we have a home field advantage.
- 1:14:43SPEAKER_05: I know we we rocked it last year in our home field on in when game when teams came to Lubbock, it was not good for them last year.
- 1:14:51SPEAKER_05: Uh, this year I think will be a little bit different in that we are going to get some scares at home, and I do think this is going to be one of those.
- 1:14:59SPEAKER_05: I do not have them beating us, but I have a very, very tight Cincinnati-esque of 2024.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_05: Brendan Soresby coming into town, and you win on maybe not a last-minute field goal, but you win by a field goal.
- 1:15:13SPEAKER_05: I think this is gonna be a high scoring affair.
- 1:15:15SPEAKER_05: 44-41 Texas Tech.
- 1:15:17SPEAKER_01: Okay, so yeah, something really similar.
- 1:15:19SPEAKER_01: Um, you know what's funny?
- 1:15:20SPEAKER_01: Whenever I think about all the games of Arizona, you don't want one the one that pops in my head.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_05: What's that?
- 1:15:25SPEAKER_01: The Kevin Sumlin Matt Wells game.
- 1:15:27SPEAKER_05: Oh, dude.
- 1:15:28SPEAKER_05: Do not that I the the the J Rod punching the ball out kind of a helped erase that memory from me, but now you've brought it back and you've made me re-upset.
- 1:15:39SPEAKER_01: That game was so bad, dude.
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_05: I was I remember that game.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_05: I no, it was the year before COVID.
- 1:15:46SPEAKER_05: I remember that game very deeply because I was working the college football tour.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_05: It was the same week as the Red River game, and that's where we were that weekend was at the state fair.
- 1:15:58SPEAKER_05: Um, and I rushed back to my hotel from the state fair to go watch us blow it to Arizona in a game that I was so upset about.
- 1:16:12SPEAKER_05: I mean, I was I there there have been a few games where we've been just absolute disasters after and won't talk to anybody and uh are just sad sacks.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_05: That was one of them.
- 1:16:24SPEAKER_05: I didn't want to talk to anybody.
- 1:16:25SPEAKER_05: I was like, there's no way because that was that was bad Arizona.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_01: Arizona was bad.
- 1:16:30SPEAKER_01: I think Kevin got like fired that year.
- 1:16:32SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, it was it was bad.
- 1:16:34SPEAKER_01: It was a bad, I think it was like their quarterback just literally just walked up the field every single time.
- 1:16:40SPEAKER_05: Yeah, he couldn't he couldn't throw the ball.
- 1:16:42SPEAKER_05: Their quarterback could not throw the ball for his life, but he just ran all over us.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 1:16:46SPEAKER_05: And it was yeah, it was gross.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_01: Anyway.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_01: Anyway.
- 1:16:51SPEAKER_01: This is gonna be a tight one, dude.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_01: I have us winning 34 to 30 in this in this matchup against the Wildcats from the desert.
- 1:16:59unknown: Yep.
- 1:16:59SPEAKER_01: I think they're gonna be really good.
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_01: I think it's being a ranked matchup.
- 1:17:02SPEAKER_05: We had the same idea.
- 1:17:03SPEAKER_05: Uh Noah Fafita, you know, you don't want returning quarterbacks coming in, skilled quarterback.
- 1:17:07SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, we'll see how the rest of that team is this year, but I think they'll give us a scare in Lubbock, but we'll still pull out the dub.
- 1:17:14SPEAKER_05: So at this point, what are we?
- 1:17:15SPEAKER_05: 8-0?
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_01: 8-0.
- 1:17:18SPEAKER_01: Uh yes.
- 1:17:19SPEAKER_05: Um eight-o, you get a little bit of a break here at the beginning of uh November.
- 1:17:25SPEAKER_05: November 7th, you stay in Lubbock.
- 1:17:28SPEAKER_05: So don't have to travel anywhere.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_05: You have two straight home games.
- 1:17:31SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be nice.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_05: Uh, against the West Virginia Mountaineers, where your Texas Tech Red Raiders hold an eight to seven all-time lead in the series over the West Virginia Mountaineers.
- 1:17:43SPEAKER_05: Um, West Virginia four and eight last year, two and seven in the Big 12.
- 1:17:48SPEAKER_05: Uh, last year, 49-0.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_05: You beat the uh the Mountaineers in the in the final game of the regular season.
- 1:17:56SPEAKER_05: Um just a uh in Morgantown.
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_05: I mean, you got a feel for those fans that went to that game.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_05: 49-0.
- 1:18:05SPEAKER_01: In your own place is brutal, dude.
- 1:18:07SPEAKER_05: And yeah, and I mean I know it's the end of the year, and and they were playing with players hurt.
- 1:18:11SPEAKER_05: I think their quarterback was hurt at the end of the year and they had to play a backup, but good night.
- 1:18:16SPEAKER_05: 49-0.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_05: That's brutal.
- 1:18:18SPEAKER_05: Um, I think it's it's not gonna be quite as bad this year, but I do think you are going to route them.
- 1:18:24SPEAKER_05: Uh, I have 56-17 uh Texas Tech beating West Virginia.
- 1:18:28SPEAKER_01: I have something similar.
- 1:18:29SPEAKER_01: Um, I have the what's gonna be your biggest win score differential-wise of the year, because I think at this point you're you are humming.
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_01: And you are just demoralizing teams at this point if they're just that much worse than you.
- 1:18:43SPEAKER_01: 66 to 10.
- 1:18:44SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:18:45SPEAKER_05: Yeah, you got you got some some high-powered offense.
- 1:18:47SPEAKER_05: You got Will Hammond slinging that thing.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he's like having the game of his life.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_01: I think that's a good take.
- 1:18:55SPEAKER_01: I I don't know what it's what's what it's been with us against West Virginia, but we just like exercise demons on them right now, dude.
- 1:19:02SPEAKER_01: The these past few years, it's been cruel.
- 1:19:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah, we uh we have no we have no worries with the with the Mountaineers.
- 1:19:09SPEAKER_05: Uh and I don't know, things could change again, year two, and maybe we're seeing a different sort of West Virginia team than we saw last year.
- 1:19:16SPEAKER_05: Um, but I I don't think they're that much better um than they were in 2025.
- 1:19:21SPEAKER_01: So hey, they can only go up score-wise.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_05: So yeah, that's true.
- 1:19:25SPEAKER_05: You can't, you know, you can't get worse than zero.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_05: Um the 14th of November.
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_05: You travel to Stillwater, Oklahoma, where right now, a little surprising to me, 25 and 24.
- 1:19:42SPEAKER_05: A lot of these series, a lot of these all-time series with these teams that we play this year are like one-game differences.
- 1:19:47SPEAKER_05: It's crazy.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_01: Oklahoma State Gundy like ripping off 14 straight against.
- 1:19:52SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah.
- 1:19:52SPEAKER_05: No, we we did very good prior to that like stretch where I think they went like 12-0 or 14-0 or something like that against us for a while there.
- 1:20:01SPEAKER_05: But um Texas Tech leads the all-time series 25-24.
- 1:20:06SPEAKER_05: Um, Oklahoma State, everybody knows, 1-11 last year, 0-9 in the Big 12.
- 1:20:12SPEAKER_05: They have not won a Big 12 game in two years.
- 1:20:14SPEAKER_05: Uh, they went two straight years.
- 1:20:17SPEAKER_05: 0-9 in the in the Big 12 in conference play.
- 1:20:20SPEAKER_05: Um, they were bad.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_05: Uh they were bad.
- 1:20:24SPEAKER_05: Uh, they lost 42-0 to Texas Tech last year.
- 1:20:27SPEAKER_05: Um, that was kind of that was just mean.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_05: That was a tough game to watch because they were the Gundy was already gone at that point, and it was just like Oklahoma State uh in Lubbock is brutal.
- 1:20:38SPEAKER_05: Um I think this is going to be a drastic difference from what you saw in 2025 in the Oklahoma State matchup.
- 1:20:46SPEAKER_05: Um this is this is my loss on the schedule.
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_06: What?
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_05: This is my loss on the schedule.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_05: Well, you have to go to Stillwater against Eric Morris, who knows you, who runs a very high-powered offense against Drew Mestermaker, which I think is going to be the best quarterback in the Big 12, if not one of the top three.
- 1:21:05SPEAKER_05: I'll take you.
- 1:21:06SPEAKER_05: I I think they have the offense and they give you enough defense.
- 1:21:12SPEAKER_05: Um, and you and they scare you in in still water.
- 1:21:16SPEAKER_05: This is this is the game I have us losing 42-35.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 1:21:20SPEAKER_01: Interesting choice to uh pick the team that hasn't won a Big 12 game in two years to be the one that I'm not saying it's a popular opinion.
- 1:21:30SPEAKER_05: I'm saying it's my opinion.
- 1:21:32SPEAKER_01: It's doing the right thing isn't always easy.
- 1:21:35SPEAKER_01: I don't I understand.
- 1:21:38SPEAKER_01: Honestly, dude, it's funny you say that because like I thought about it, like, is Oklahoma State the the trap game?
- 1:21:45SPEAKER_01: But everyone's saying it's the trap not not everybody, but people are like really kind of pointing to like is Oklahoma State gonna be spooky?
- 1:21:51SPEAKER_01: You know, and I get it.
- 1:21:53SPEAKER_01: I'm just not bought in on year one.
- 1:21:55SPEAKER_01: And I think I think Eric's gonna be like really motivated to win this game, you know, it's like this is alma mater, so yeah, there's something kind of something to prove there.
- 1:22:02SPEAKER_01: Um, but if I was gonna pick one that the game that you're gonna drop, I I was leaning more towards Waco uh at the end of the year.
- 1:22:11SPEAKER_01: Um spoiler, I don't, but I think you're gonna win this game 42 to 29.
- 1:22:16SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_05: I so it's weird because I don't think Oklahoma State's gonna be a phenomenal team.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_05: Like I don't think they're gonna be uh like a a 10-win team or something out of the gate, but I do think that they sneak one on you here in Stillwater, and you're going into so your last two games of the season that we'll get into here are rivalry games.
- 1:22:36SPEAKER_05: You're playing Baylor, you're playing TCU.
- 1:22:38SPEAKER_05: I mean, they're in-state rivals that you care deeply about that uh, you know, a lot of the the recent games have gone either way.
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_05: Um I think you may be still rivalry, yeah.
- 1:22:48SPEAKER_05: I think they are too, but not to the same, yeah, not to the same level.
- 1:22:52SPEAKER_05: So um I think there's potential here that you are looking ahead to playing your two rivals back to back um in the in the new Big 12 in the state of Texas.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_05: Um and I think you you slip up here in still water.
- 1:23:06SPEAKER_01: I I I it's it I don't think it's crazy.
- 1:23:08SPEAKER_01: I think it's I think it's a pretty smart pick because like like you said, I I kind of like the point that you made that you're not you're not necessarily losing the team to the team that's in the top third of the the conference.
- 1:23:17SPEAKER_01: You're losing to the team that's scaring people in the name that got lucky on you, kind of thing.
- 1:23:21SPEAKER_01: So I I totally get it, especially at the end of the year, you might be too high on your own supply, maybe after blowing the doors off of West Virginia, um, kind of thing.
- 1:23:28SPEAKER_01: So I I get it.
- 1:23:29SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 1:23:30SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and uh I hope I'm wrong.
- 1:23:32SPEAKER_05: Um moving on to the 21st of November, you travel to Waco, Texas, where unfortunately you are 40 and 42 all time against Baylor, which is ridiculous.
- 1:23:45SPEAKER_05: You should absolutely have that series.
- 1:23:47SPEAKER_05: But we as we know, Baylor had some good years there.
- 1:23:49SPEAKER_01: Um there's a certain thing that happened for a long time.
- 1:23:53SPEAKER_05: Yeah, there might have been some stuff happening in departments, yeah.
- 1:23:57SPEAKER_05: Incompetence on one side, illegal stuff on the other side.
- 1:24:01SPEAKER_05: Um five and seven last year, the Baylor Bears, three and six in conference in 2025.
- 1:24:08SPEAKER_05: Like we already mentioned, they are an enigma.
- 1:24:10SPEAKER_05: We don't know what Baylor's going to do.
- 1:24:12SPEAKER_05: We never know what Baylor's going to do.
- 1:24:14SPEAKER_05: Um, especially a Dave Aranda Baylor.
- 1:24:17SPEAKER_05: Um, I have us exercising some demons after a unexpected loss in Stillwater, and I have us going to Waco and uh winning 55 to 10.
- 1:24:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the the the Baylor 55 to 10, that's that's very tasty.
- 1:24:32SPEAKER_01: The Baylor game is weird.
- 1:24:33SPEAKER_01: We could be playing in a randoless team at this point, too.
- 1:24:36SPEAKER_01: Especially with that score, there's a good chance you are.
- 1:24:39SPEAKER_01: Um the baylor, the baylor team is weird because it's like, are they going to just come out of nowhere and you know slap Joey in the face, former employer, or are they just gonna die?
- 1:24:55SPEAKER_01: Those are your options.
- 1:24:56SPEAKER_01: Like it's yeah, they're either gonna they're either gonna upset you or you're the they're just gonna die.
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_01: So I I lean towards them dying.
- 1:25:03SPEAKER_01: I don't think it's gonna be I guess you know, I didn't even consider that Aranda could be gone at that point whenever I made this.
- 1:25:10SPEAKER_01: Um, I just I I I was like trying to find like if there's gonna be an L.
- 1:25:13SPEAKER_01: I was like, if I was gonna point to anything, in my brain, it was either Houston or Baylor.
- 1:25:18SPEAKER_01: So with this, I'm gonna I have us winning 27 to 13.
- 1:25:22SPEAKER_01: So nothing like crazy, but you went on the road and got it done, kind of thing.
- 1:25:26SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah, I can definitely see like a close game happening with this one of just like you're just squeezing out a dub and just when the fourth quarter comes around, you're just like, let's let the clock go.
- 1:25:35SPEAKER_05: Come on.
- 1:25:35SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
- 1:25:36SPEAKER_05: The clock keeps rolling.
- 1:25:37SPEAKER_05: But um, no, I had to kind of stay on par with my predictions.
- 1:25:40SPEAKER_05: And um, you know, if if we do drop a game in Stillwater, I think that next game, or really if we drop any game, that next game that we come out, I think we're gonna be just the most motivated we could ever be.
- 1:25:51SPEAKER_05: Um, and just go destroy that next team.
- 1:25:53SPEAKER_05: So I have that here with us beating Baylor.
- 1:25:55SPEAKER_05: So uh right now I have us at 10-1.
- 1:25:58SPEAKER_05: You have us at 11-0 going into the final game of the regular season, which is a Thursday night Thanksgiving matchup against another in-state rival, the TCU Hornfrogs.
- 1:26:11SPEAKER_05: Don't love it.
- 1:26:12SPEAKER_05: We're 33 and 31 all time over the TCU Hornfrogs.
- 1:26:16SPEAKER_05: Um, TCU last year 9-4, 5-4 in the Big 12.
- 1:26:21SPEAKER_05: Um this game's spooky.
- 1:26:24SPEAKER_05: It's spooky.
- 1:26:25SPEAKER_01: It's spooky.
- 1:26:26SPEAKER_05: I don't I I love that it's in Lubbock, Texas.
- 1:26:28SPEAKER_05: I love I I know I love it.
- 1:26:31SPEAKER_05: I I'd so much rather you come off of a Saturday game against Baylor, you get to be at home that whole week, and it's a short week.
- 1:26:39SPEAKER_05: You're playing on Thursday after you've just played on that past Saturday, you'd so much rather be at home for that type of a game.
- 1:26:47SPEAKER_05: And uh yeah, I I I I think no matter what, this one's probably gonna be tighter than what you want it to be.
- 1:26:54SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 100%.
- 1:26:55SPEAKER_01: I I just normally whenever you think about the Thanksgiving game at Ludwig, you know, the the students have gone home kind of thing, so you don't necessarily have the same Jones or pardon me, Galaxy Stadium.
- 1:27:06SPEAKER_01: Um, but I think the good news is again, you we we're we could be very likely be talking about a top 10 Texas Tech team.
- 1:27:14SPEAKER_01: And I don't think there's any chance you're not selling out a top 10 Texas Tech game against an in-state rival.
- 1:27:20SPEAKER_01: So I I I think that you're still gonna have all the seats uh with butts in it.
- 1:27:24SPEAKER_01: Um but I'm with you, dude.
- 1:27:26SPEAKER_01: This game is scary.
- 1:27:27SPEAKER_01: I I haven't really looked at it too hard.
- 1:27:28SPEAKER_01: I guess it probably because it was at the end of the schedule, you don't really look at it too hard.
- 1:27:33SPEAKER_01: Um, but I do have us winning this game and completing a historic 12-0 season for the first time.
- 1:27:41SPEAKER_01: I I'm assuming, I mean, I don't know if the numbers in front of me, I'm assuming that'd be the first time in Texas history ever go undefeated in season.
- 1:27:47SPEAKER_01: So I think it's a gritty game.
- 1:27:50SPEAKER_01: I think it's a chippy game.
- 1:27:52SPEAKER_01: I think there's gonna be pushing.
- 1:27:53SPEAKER_01: I think there's gonna be brawls.
- 1:27:55SPEAKER_01: I think that it's gonna be ugly.
- 1:27:57SPEAKER_01: Um I think you're gonna win an ugly game twice.
- 1:28:00SPEAKER_01: 29 to 18.
- 1:28:01SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:28:02SPEAKER_05: I like that.
- 1:28:03SPEAKER_05: I like that score.
- 1:28:04SPEAKER_05: I went a little higher.
- 1:28:05SPEAKER_05: I think it's going to be high powered.
- 1:28:06SPEAKER_05: I think it's going to be score after score after score.
- 1:28:09SPEAKER_05: And I think it's going to be 4135 Texas Tech coming out with the victory here.
- 1:28:14SPEAKER_05: But I do agree with you.
- 1:28:15SPEAKER_05: I think it's going to get chippy.
- 1:28:16SPEAKER_05: I think they're going to be mad.
- 1:28:18SPEAKER_05: I think TCU uh is I think the rivalry is going to really show in this one.
- 1:28:23SPEAKER_05: But but I think when you're looking at this game and you're seeing what where it is in the season, last game of the regular season, Texas Tech at this point, we're thinking about playoffs.
- 1:28:32SPEAKER_05: We're thinking about, you know, can we clinch a spot in the Big 12 championship if we haven't already clinched?
- 1:28:38SPEAKER_05: You know, I think is is where your head's at.
- 1:28:40SPEAKER_05: And I think that's where you get the more motivated Texas Tech.
- 1:28:43SPEAKER_05: As we saw last year, you know, we had kind of it wrapped up in a in a in the bag.
- 1:28:48SPEAKER_05: You know, like we had a spot in the Big 12 Championship.
- 1:28:51SPEAKER_05: We just need to go and beat, you know, West Virginia.
- 1:28:53SPEAKER_05: We just need to go and beat Oklahoma State.
- 1:28:55SPEAKER_05: We can just go and beat them.
- 1:28:57SPEAKER_05: We murdered them.
- 1:28:58SPEAKER_05: We crushed them.
- 1:29:00SPEAKER_05: Like there, there's a different level of motivation when you see the finish line.
- 1:29:04SPEAKER_05: And I think we're gonna that's what we're gonna see here for TCU is we're gonna pull out a victory.
- 1:29:12SPEAKER_05: I do think it's gonna be tight, but I think that Texas Tech is is gonna see that motivation in the fourth quarter and and just pull out a game-winning play or uh something to really put you over the top.
- 1:29:22SPEAKER_01: The the clinching is a good point, but something else to consider along with the clinch, I want to see how many times we could say clinch.
- 1:29:30SPEAKER_01: Um remember, every game is a resume builder.
- 1:29:34SPEAKER_01: So you do have to keep playing with the playoffs in mind.
- 1:29:38SPEAKER_05: Especially for the Big 12.
- 1:29:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so you you you kind of have to obliterate your your conference mates.
- 1:29:45SPEAKER_01: It's ugly, but it's just kind of what you have to do to boost that resume.
- 1:29:49SPEAKER_01: So I I hope that they keep playing that hard with that in mind.
- 1:29:53SPEAKER_01: I don't think that's gonna be capable in this game, unless TCU is far worse than we expect.
- 1:29:58SPEAKER_01: Um, but there's a high potential that this is a ranked matchup.
- 1:30:02SPEAKER_01: So it's it's uh I think it's gonna be ugly and punchy.
- 1:30:07SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:30:08SPEAKER_05: I I don't love the short turn here.
- 1:30:10SPEAKER_05: Um I don't love going to play Baylor and Waco and then uh and then you gotta turn around and on Thanksgiving on a holiday, you gotta go play another in-state rival.
- 1:30:19SPEAKER_05: So I think this is this is definitely a tricky game and and one that I would not doubt if somebody predicted that Texas Tech would lose this one.
- 1:30:26SPEAKER_05: Um I have them winning though.
- 1:30:28SPEAKER_05: So final count for the regular season.
- 1:30:32SPEAKER_05: You have an undefeated 12-0 Texas Tech Red Raider football team.
- 1:30:37SPEAKER_05: I have an 11-1 Texas Tech Red Raider football team with my only loss coming at Oklahoma State and Stillwater.
- 1:30:45SPEAKER_05: My next question would be because both of these mean that you are in the Big 12 championship, most likely.
- 1:30:50SPEAKER_05: I mean, unless you get a weird third team who's somehow in the running for only one conference loss or something like that.
- 1:30:56SPEAKER_05: Um, who do you have the Texas Tech Red Raiders playing in Arlington?
- 1:31:02SPEAKER_01: Super boring, but it's hard not to say BYU.
- 1:31:06SPEAKER_01: Because I'm trying to, it's not necessarily just because BYU is awesome and they're probably gonna be awesome.
- 1:31:10SPEAKER_01: Um it's it's you don't see them.
- 1:31:13SPEAKER_01: You know, I'm I'm trying to think of the teams that you don't run into during the year because I'm counting on beating that team, which is a knock against their uh record to go to the to the to the championship game.
- 1:31:24SPEAKER_01: So if I'm looking at the teams that aren't on our side, you know, BYU's the only one I can pick of like the Utah, the Kansas States, and so on, that makes the most sense of being there.
- 1:31:35SPEAKER_05: Yep.
- 1:31:36SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and the yeah, and that's one.
- 1:31:38SPEAKER_05: I think BYU's schedule is super interesting.
- 1:31:40SPEAKER_05: They have that Notre Dame game kind of thrown in there in the middle of the season.
- 1:31:44SPEAKER_05: Awesome matchup.
- 1:31:45SPEAKER_05: Awesome matchup, glad they're playing them.
- 1:31:47SPEAKER_05: But I think that could be, you know, Notre Dame, I think is going to be really good this year.
- 1:31:50SPEAKER_05: So um, you know, that'll be a tough one, definitely.
- 1:31:53SPEAKER_01: But as far as huge feather in the Big 12 like resume building cap.
- 1:31:57SPEAKER_05: Oh, absolutely.
- 1:31:58SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's it's on par like Arizona State plays AM in the non-compass.
- 1:32:01SPEAKER_01: I'll be like big as well, but not by Notre Dame, but I get what you're saying.
- 1:32:04SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean it's it there's there's some huge ones for the Big 12 to kind of shift the narrative a little bit.
- 1:32:09SPEAKER_05: Um, and that's one of them, the BYU Notre Dame.
- 1:32:12SPEAKER_05: But you look at BYU's schedule, they play Arizona at home, they're at TCU, Iowa State at home, Notre Dame at home, at UCF, uh Arizona State at home, at Utah for the uh the Holy War, Baylor at home, at Kansas, Cincinnati.
- 1:32:30SPEAKER_05: Like their schedule is fine.
- 1:32:32SPEAKER_05: You know, outside like Notre Dame's a tough one.
- 1:32:33SPEAKER_05: I'll give them that.
- 1:32:34SPEAKER_06: It's all be hard.
- 1:32:35SPEAKER_05: You know, at Utah, at TCU, they definitely have some tough ones thrown in there.
- 1:32:39SPEAKER_05: But overall, though, like BYU has a chance, has an absolutely a good chance to go undefeated throughout the regular season.
- 1:32:46SPEAKER_05: Uh, I also have them in the Big 12 championship for a rematch.
- 1:32:49SPEAKER_05: Um, I know it's the boring answer.
- 1:32:51SPEAKER_05: It's the answer that probably a lot of people have.
- 1:32:53SPEAKER_05: Um, but it I think it's fair.
- 1:32:55SPEAKER_01: And it's the best case scenario for the Big 12 to have two undefeated teams show down, especially the two top teams from last year and coming into this into the year with probably the highest ranking immediately.
- 1:33:06SPEAKER_01: Like that's that is amazing for the Big 12.
- 1:33:09SPEAKER_01: It'd be so good to see both of those teams go into the playoff.
- 1:33:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no doubt.
- 1:33:13SPEAKER_05: Um would this would you would you have Texas Tech winning the Big Twelve Championship?
- 1:33:20SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:33:20SPEAKER_05: I would.
- 1:33:21SPEAKER_01: I I think we're gonna repeat.
- 1:33:22SPEAKER_01: I think we're gonna we're about to kind of see ourselves going a bit of like a Clemson-esque tear or Oregon tear kind of thing, where you're just they're just really gonna just start ripping off some some success, and it's gonna be hard to catch them because these these things snowball.
- 1:33:36SPEAKER_01: And so as you as you perform better, you get better players, you get better attention, and you just winning solves everything, and that includes winning more.
- 1:33:46SPEAKER_05: So, yeah.
- 1:33:47SPEAKER_05: As uh as one of Joey's quips this offseason of what he's constantly repeated on different radio shows and interviews and press conferences and all that, he continues to bring up repeating as Big 12 champions, and that there's only been two other teams that have done it in OU and Baylor tied for one.
- 1:34:04SPEAKER_05: He's brought that up multiple times.
- 1:34:06SPEAKER_05: That is top of mind for him.
- 1:34:08SPEAKER_05: If we get in that Big 12 championship, we are not losing the Big 12 championship, uh, in my in my opinion.
- 1:34:15SPEAKER_01: I I I think it's I that I think that's a that's a great point, and also something to consider.
- 1:34:19SPEAKER_01: Texas TechStech is not exactly a conference dominator, like historically, not even close.
- 1:34:26SPEAKER_01: So this still means so much to the fans.
- 1:34:29SPEAKER_01: I still care deeply about winning the Big 12 championship.
- 1:34:32SPEAKER_01: I am not even close to the point of like, oh well, you know, what what does it mean for the playoff implications?
- 1:34:39SPEAKER_01: You know, like what do I really want to play that game?
- 1:34:41SPEAKER_01: Was losing, risking losing.
- 1:34:43SPEAKER_01: No, I want that trophy.
- 1:34:44SPEAKER_01: I want I want to line the cases, the cases with those trophies.
- 1:34:47SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, me too.
- 1:34:48SPEAKER_05: I I I care deeply.
- 1:34:50SPEAKER_05: The the crowd obviously cared really deeply last year.
- 1:34:53SPEAKER_05: It was the uh you know, highest or most people at any conference championship game ever for college football.
- 1:34:59SPEAKER_05: So Red Raiders uh care, and we're gonna care even though we've already won one now.
- 1:35:04SPEAKER_01: So do BYU Cougars, though.
- 1:35:06SPEAKER_01: Like those fans care immensely as well.
- 1:35:07SPEAKER_01: So I mean they that they're definitely part of the reason why that was the sell-out crowd.
- 1:35:11SPEAKER_01: Like the B12 couldn't have asked for the two biggest fan bases in the area to go and do that, you know.
- 1:35:17SPEAKER_05: For sure.
- 1:35:18SPEAKER_05: Um and BYU is gonna have some motivation.
- 1:35:20SPEAKER_05: I mean, obviously, they got trounched twice against Texas Tech last year.
- 1:35:25SPEAKER_05: So uh they'll be looking to get some revenge there.
- 1:35:27SPEAKER_05: But um, with you having a 12-0, now 13-0 Texas Tech after winning the Big 12 championship for the second straight year, that is clearly a top four seed in the college football playoff, clearly a buy.
- 1:35:39SPEAKER_05: Um, you know, we did it, we had a top four seed and we had a loss last year.
- 1:35:43SPEAKER_01: So I don't even want the buy.
- 1:35:45SPEAKER_05: I know this is the thing, and maybe I curated this.
- 1:35:50SPEAKER_05: Getting that loss to Oklahoma State puts a bad uh what people would perceive as a bad loss on your schedule.
- 1:35:57SPEAKER_05: Because if you look at a seven-win Oklahoma State team at the end of the year and you say, Oh, you lost to that team, it's almost looking at like what Texas did last year losing to Florida, and it's like, ugh, that's a that's not a good loss for you.
- 1:36:08SPEAKER_05: And so I think that kind of gives the committee a little bit of uh and they put us down to like a five or a six seed.
- 1:36:16SPEAKER_01: Did I did did I just sorry to interrupt, did I did I miss the um the adjustment?
- 1:36:22SPEAKER_01: Is it not still the top four conference champions get the bye?
- 1:36:25SPEAKER_05: I don't think so.
- 1:36:26SPEAKER_01: Okay, they should they they shifted just flat.
- 1:36:29SPEAKER_05: They didn't do that last year.
- 1:36:30SPEAKER_01: They didn't?
- 1:36:30SPEAKER_05: No, we have Indiana Indiana, Indiana and Ohio State were a top four seed.
- 1:36:35SPEAKER_01: Oh, okay.
- 1:36:36SPEAKER_01: My bad.
- 1:36:36SPEAKER_01: Apologies.
- 1:36:40SPEAKER_05: So I just think, and I want this, honestly.
- 1:36:43SPEAKER_05: I want a five or a six seed.
- 1:36:45SPEAKER_05: I I want that.
- 1:36:46SPEAKER_05: I want to play the first playoff game in Lubbock, Texas.
- 1:36:49SPEAKER_05: I want to not have three weeks off between games.
- 1:36:53SPEAKER_05: I want to I want to have a chance in the playoff.
- 1:36:58SPEAKER_05: And I think that three-week break that they freaking give you really kills any sort of momentum that you just had.
- 1:37:04SPEAKER_05: And you saw it in the Oregon game with us, you saw it in a lot of games.
- 1:37:07SPEAKER_05: Really, Indiana was the only one who had managed to avoid it, and that's in two, three years of the playoff at this point.
- 1:37:14SPEAKER_05: All of those top four seeds have struggled in that first playoff game because of so much time off.
- 1:37:19SPEAKER_05: So this is more me like hoping for the best case scenario for Texas Tech, which I think is a five or a six seed in the college football playoff, hosting that first game against uh probably a a James Madison-esque or a two-lane-esque sort of team of the of the G five.
- 1:37:37SPEAKER_05: And um, and I think that helps you.
- 1:37:39SPEAKER_01: You're you're you're correct.
- 1:37:41SPEAKER_01: Like that is the ideal outcome, but the problem is I'm I'm gonna want to go undefeated.
- 1:37:46SPEAKER_01: I'm never gonna be like lose this game.
- 1:37:48SPEAKER_01: No, you know what I mean.
- 1:37:49SPEAKER_01: And you never you never go in with that attitude, but it'll be a nice, it'll be a nice cope.
- 1:37:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:37:54SPEAKER_01: Like, and I don't mean that in a rude way either.
- 1:37:56SPEAKER_01: Like it will be it'll be a nice like rebound as a fan, being like, oh, we lost the game.
- 1:38:02SPEAKER_01: It's the end of the year.
- 1:38:03SPEAKER_01: The good news is things are still looking okay.
- 1:38:05SPEAKER_01: Well we if anything, now we get to host the game.
- 1:38:09SPEAKER_01: And I like how your point of like, of course, you do get that that that long break.
- 1:38:13SPEAKER_01: It seems nice to get your players healthy and get that practice in, but showing time and time again to be a problem.
- 1:38:18SPEAKER_01: But also, dude, just how damn fun is it to host a playoff game in your stadium?
- 1:38:24SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 1:38:25SPEAKER_01: Just talk about what a boost it is to Lovick, you know, and to Texas Tech and all that.
- 1:38:30SPEAKER_01: Like, that's so much fun to give to let your students have that, have another home game.
- 1:38:34SPEAKER_01: Like, that's so sick.
- 1:38:36SPEAKER_01: So I I feel like everyone's just sick and tired of the the neutral site buys, you know.
- 1:38:41SPEAKER_05: So yeah, yeah.
- 1:38:42SPEAKER_05: And so we shall see what happens.
- 1:38:44SPEAKER_05: You obviously have us at sorry, Dylan.
- 1:38:48SPEAKER_01: No, I'll just I was gonna say, like, you know what, give us the buy, but stop this dumb bowl game that's like what a a not even a six it's a near six bowl.
- 1:38:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it's like the so yeah, they're all bull game from the quarterfinal on, it's all like the the old bowl games.
- 1:39:05SPEAKER_01: It's like save save it for the semis, you know, save the bowl games for the semis.
- 1:39:09SPEAKER_01: So let let the let the team that has the bye get the advantage of hosting, you know.
- 1:39:14SPEAKER_05: Yeah, their NCAA is all they're jacked up in many ways.
- 1:39:18SPEAKER_05: Uh, but one is their relationships with the bulls right now and why they keep why they keep trying to keep this thing going.
- 1:39:25SPEAKER_05: Um, but yeah, man, that's uh to end it to cap it off.
- 1:39:30SPEAKER_05: You have us at 13-0 going into the college football playoff.
- 1:39:33SPEAKER_05: We're not gonna predict anything past that right now because we're just hoping that we make it.
- 1:39:37SPEAKER_05: Um I have us at, I guess, 12-1 going into the college football playoff.
- 1:39:44SPEAKER_05: Both of us have us winning the Big 12 championship and uh another darn good season as a Red Raider fan and uh continuing the momentum from last year.
- 1:39:52SPEAKER_05: So exciting time to be a Red Raider fan.
- 1:39:54SPEAKER_05: Um, obviously, preseason, we're all hyped up and we're all ready to go.
- 1:39:58SPEAKER_05: Um, and we just hope it translates.
- 1:40:00SPEAKER_01: Dude, it doesn't suck right now, man.
- 1:40:02SPEAKER_01: It's it's it's so fun to talk about these games with the idea of knowing that you are likely just better than all these teams you are playing.
- 1:40:10SPEAKER_01: It's it's not like before where we're just like trying to figure out, well, we're gonna lose games.
- 1:40:14SPEAKER_01: What games are those?
- 1:40:15SPEAKER_01: You know, so now it's just like now it's truly a question if you are gonna lose.
- 1:40:18SPEAKER_01: It's not a it's not a fact.
- 1:40:19SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it is really it is it is nice to stay humble.
- 1:40:23SPEAKER_05: Pretty cool.
- 1:40:23SPEAKER_05: And and I was thinking about it earlier today on on just staying humble of how Clemson, Penn State, all these teams that were expected to be awesome last year, like top five preseason, looking into, you know, uh predicting them to go to the college football playoff, and their fan bases were talking about, oh, what's the seating gonna look like in the college football playoff?
- 1:40:44SPEAKER_05: And then they just ended up being terrible.
- 1:40:46SPEAKER_05: Uh, I mean, coach fired, horrible circumstances, players get hurt, you know, all sorts of stuff happens.
- 1:40:52SPEAKER_05: These are just predictions.
- 1:40:53SPEAKER_05: These are just this is not really going off of anything that we've seen yet because we have not seen this team play.
- 1:40:59SPEAKER_05: So um I think it humbles me a little bit to just keep that in mind of hey, maybe this season, you know, and maybe stuff does go wrong this year.
- 1:41:08SPEAKER_05: Maybe not everything is sunshine and roses after one good season, but I do think with the talent on this team, the conference that we are in, the schedule that we have, there's a lot of opportunity for us to have another great, great year.
- 1:41:21SPEAKER_01: I think it's really grounded way to look at it.
- 1:41:23SPEAKER_01: And the way I'm staying, um uh what what word did you use?
- 1:41:28SPEAKER_01: Humble is we are still so new to this.
- 1:41:31SPEAKER_01: I do not want to sit here and talk like we're freaking Nick Sabins, Alabama.
- 1:41:36SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 1:41:37SPEAKER_01: Like it's this is not a dynasty, this is not a true party crasher quite yet.
- 1:41:42SPEAKER_01: Like it's it's it's heading that way.
- 1:41:44SPEAKER_01: And we're allowed to be excited about it and talk trash to the teams we're about to play.
- 1:41:48SPEAKER_01: But I I'm just I'm not letting myself get a big head about being a tech fan.
- 1:41:52SPEAKER_01: Well, we're sure we're awesome, but we just do not have the hardware to truly back it up yet.
- 1:41:57SPEAKER_05: Yeah, so that that will hopefully come in a few years, and then we can reassess this conversation.
- 1:42:02SPEAKER_05: But um, all right, buddy.
- 1:42:04SPEAKER_05: This was a long pod.
- 1:42:05SPEAKER_05: This is a good podcast really long, dude.
- 1:42:07SPEAKER_05: But a long pod, fun pod.
- 1:42:09SPEAKER_05: Uh, this is why we do it once a week and not multiple times a week.
- 1:42:12SPEAKER_05: Um Do you have anything else before we get to Song of the Week?
- 1:42:15SPEAKER_01: No, I don't do it, dude.
- 1:42:16unknown: All right.
- 1:42:17SPEAKER_01: 12-0, baby.
- 1:42:18SPEAKER_05: Give me your song of the week.
- 1:42:20SPEAKER_01: Steven.
- 1:42:22SPEAKER_01: Some songs are earworms.
- 1:42:25SPEAKER_01: They crawl into your brain, and they will not leave if you hear it in public at the grocery store or restaurant, and they have the generic pop playlist on, and it just gets in there.
- 1:42:34SPEAKER_01: Many of you will know this from Barstool Fame, but this is Eddie Grant's Electric Avenue.
- 1:42:53SPEAKER_04: We gonna run it down to Electric Avenue.
- 1:42:58SPEAKER_01: Like, everyone has to bop.
- 1:43:00SPEAKER_04: And then we'll take it higher.
- 1:43:05SPEAKER_01: Beautiful song of the week, but I had to do it.
- 1:43:07SPEAKER_01: Like, because I heard it at a restaurant today and couldn't not get it out of my brain.
- 1:43:10SPEAKER_05: I know.
- 1:43:10SPEAKER_05: You sent in the group text.
- 1:43:12SPEAKER_05: I knew it was gonna be your song of the week.
- 1:43:13SPEAKER_05: Um great song, great song.
- 1:43:16SPEAKER_05: What am I gonna say?
- 1:43:17SPEAKER_05: That's not a great song.
- 1:43:18SPEAKER_05: It's a great song, it's a it's a bop, it's an absolute bop.
- 1:43:21SPEAKER_05: Good song of the week.
- 1:43:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, my song of the week is uh not quite the same level of fame that Eddie Grant is, but I chose a small name artist, Alan Jackson, um, for my song of the week.
- 1:43:34SPEAKER_01: Not quite Eddie Grant's, Mr.
- 1:43:36SPEAKER_01: Alan Jackson is.
- 1:43:37SPEAKER_05: He's still striving to be there.
- 1:43:39SPEAKER_05: Maybe one day.
- 1:43:40SPEAKER_05: Maybe one day for for old AJ.
- 1:43:42SPEAKER_05: But uh no, my song of the week is Chasing That Neon Rainbow by Alan Jackson.
- 1:43:48SPEAKER_05: Uh, just a just a nice fun bop uh from from the old timer, but I it it has something to do with the theme of what we're talking about here.
- 1:43:57SPEAKER_05: You know, we're still chasing stuff.
- 1:43:58SPEAKER_05: We're not this is very similar to what we just talked about.
- 1:44:01SPEAKER_05: We have not, we're not Alabama, we are not, you know, Ohio State.
- 1:44:08SPEAKER_05: We are just because we won one conference championship game and we had a great season and we're looking to have another good season does not mean that we are there yet.
- 1:44:16SPEAKER_05: So we're still chasing stuff, and I think this team is still very motivated to chase stuff.
- 1:44:22SPEAKER_05: Uh, this coaching staff, everybody is still motivated.
- 1:44:24SPEAKER_05: They're not like, oh yeah, we're top dog, we're good.
- 1:44:27SPEAKER_05: No, they're still chasing that stuff, and that's why my song of the week is chasing that neon rainbow, Alan Jackson.
- 1:44:37SPEAKER_02: Living that on top green.
- 1:44:46SPEAKER_01: I mean, you can never go wrong choosing some AJ, but I will say, Steven, that he is still chasing to get a grand.
- 1:44:51SPEAKER_01: I've never seen AJ on any reggae top 20 chart ever.
- 1:44:55SPEAKER_01: Um I sat on top of that sort of thing.
- 1:44:57SPEAKER_05: So I know, I know.
