- 0:14Speaker 2: This is the Best of Stugatz & Company live on
- 0:17Speaker 2: Fox Sports Radio.
- 0:20Speaker 3: Taylor, put it on the poll, please. That's Stugatz798x.
- 0:23Speaker 1: Do you have to pull the plug on the fireworks
- 0:25Speaker 1: show if you lose at home as a 30-point favorite?
- 0:30Speaker 1: Rutgers last night loses at home to UMass. UMass got
- 0:35Speaker 1: paid over a million dollars for that game. Rutgers had
- 0:38Speaker 1: a firework show planned, scheduled after the game because, of course,
- 0:43Speaker 1: they thought they were going to win. They were favored
- 0:44Speaker 1: by 30 points over UMass. They lose the game and
- 0:48Speaker 1: still go forward with a firework show.
- 0:50Speaker 3: I mean.
- 0:52Speaker 5: See, if that's me and I'm taking my kid, I'm
- 0:54Speaker 5: not selling him on going to see Rutgers football. I'm like, hey,
- 0:57Speaker 5: do you want to go see some fireworks? But we
- 0:59Speaker 5: just have to watch this football game beforehand. So I
- 1:02Speaker 5: don't think you cancel the fireworks. I think that's why
- 1:05Speaker 5: everybody was there.
- 1:06Speaker 1: So the fireworks are the main attraction is what you're
- 1:08Speaker 1: saying for some.
- 1:09Speaker 3: Yes, for some. Yes.
- 1:10Speaker 5: Rutgers-UMass game was the warm-up act.
- 1:12Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:14Speaker 4: My two biggest observations from yesterday's games. Yes. I've never
- 1:20Speaker 4: been more sure that Deion Sanders is going to be
- 1:22Speaker 4: the next Florida State coach. We're just trending towards that direction.
- 1:26Speaker 4: It was impressive how good Colorado looked in the trenches,
- 1:29Speaker 4: where Georgia Tech is normally a team that prides themselves
- 1:32Speaker 4: in that. And for the most part, Colorado was the
- 1:35Speaker 4: ones pushing them around. Like Georgia Tech scored their one
- 1:38Speaker 4: touchdown off a kick return. And then the other option
- 1:41Speaker 4: from Rutgers-UMass... We have never needed promotion and relegation more
- 1:47Speaker 4: in college football because there is no reason why Rutgers
- 1:51Speaker 4: should be playing Big Ten football.
- 1:54Speaker 3: UMass should. Yeah, Pop Watson. Pop Watson.
- 1:58Speaker 4: Pop Watson transfers in from Virginia Tech, and that's kind
- 2:00Speaker 4: of what I love about the transfer portal, where a
- 2:02Speaker 4: team like UMass... spends years without beating an FBS opponent,
- 2:07Speaker 4: and then all of a sudden they have access to
- 2:09Speaker 4: a quarterback from Virginia Tech, Pop Watson, who he was
- 2:12Speaker 4: okay at Virginia Tech. He was nothing special. But against Rutgers,
- 2:16Speaker 4: you don't really need him to be special. You just
- 2:18Speaker 4: need him to be a competent quarterback.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Right.
- 2:20Speaker 1: So let's just be clear on what it is you're saying.
- 2:22Speaker 1: Rutgers does not deserve to be in the Big 20?
- 2:25Speaker 4: Correct.
- 2:25Speaker 2: Okay.
- 2:26Speaker 3: Go ahead, Mike.
- 2:29Speaker 5: He looked at the UMass roster and went, I'm going
- 2:31Speaker 5: there and I'm going to be their Superman.
- 2:37Speaker 3: By the way, is it Brent Key? Is that the
- 2:39Speaker 3: head coach at Georgia Tech? Is that his name?
- 2:41Speaker 4: Yeah, he'll be there for eternity.
- 2:42Speaker 3: Willie?
- 2:43Speaker 1: I mean, because he has a strut that I'm not
- 2:46Speaker 1: certain has been earned. I mean, he struts around like
- 2:49Speaker 1: a coach, like he's the best coach in America.
- 2:51Speaker 3: I love him.
- 2:52Speaker 1: He looks like a football coach. But I'm not certain
- 2:54Speaker 1: he has earned the right to strut around the way
- 2:58Speaker 1: that he does. And I am not certain that he
- 3:00Speaker 1: has earned the right for Taylor to say that he'll
- 3:02Speaker 1: be at Georgia Tech forever.
- 3:03Speaker 3: I mean... I think he lost his chance.
- 3:06Speaker 5: I think if he was going to leave Georgia Tech
- 3:08Speaker 5: last offseason with all those job openings and he was
- 3:12Speaker 5: one of the sexy names getting thrown out, the fact
- 3:15Speaker 5: that he didn't and then comes out and loses to
- 3:17Speaker 5: Colorado at home, you might have missed.
- 3:19Speaker 3: Your window there, buddy.
- 3:21Speaker 4: He's a Georgia Tech alum, and Georgia Tech is a
- 3:24Speaker 4: program in the ACC. They don't have national title expectations.
- 3:28Speaker 4: They don't have double-digit win expectations. This isn't the time
- 3:31Speaker 4: when Georgia Tech was running the triple option and dominating
- 3:34Speaker 4: the college football world. If Georgia Tech wins seven, eight
- 3:39Speaker 4: games a year and they're good for one upset every season,
- 3:43Speaker 4: Brent Key's got a job for life there.
- 3:45Speaker 3: Perhaps. Put that on the poll. You wait around for football.
- 3:51Speaker 3: I mean, you just wait and you wait and you wait.
- 3:54Speaker 1: And then finally you get Georgia Tech.
- 3:56Speaker 3: You get Colorado. It's on a Thursday night. You're sitting there.
- 3:59Speaker 3: You're watching the game with your daughter.
- 4:00Speaker 1: And she turns to you at some point in the
- 4:02Speaker 1: third quarter and says, Dad, this is really boring.
- 4:07Speaker 3: And you have no answer. Hard to disagree.
- 4:11Speaker 4: This is what I hate, though, because, yes, the game
- 4:13Speaker 4: was boring. Yes, I might have fallen asleep for parts
- 4:16Speaker 4: of the game. But then you wake up and you're saying, wait.
- 4:21Speaker 4: This game is still within striking distance. This score hasn't
- 4:23Speaker 4: changed since the last time my eyes were open. And
- 4:27Speaker 4: then they're lining up for the kick. Captain's their kicker.
- 4:30Speaker 4: They just need a... Field goal to win the game.
- 4:34Speaker 4: This is going to be his third walk-off field goal
- 4:36Speaker 4: at Georgia Tech. And we get a Colorado block field
- 4:40Speaker 4: goal to.
- 4:40Speaker 3: End the game. Put it on the polls. Should the
- 4:43Speaker 3: kicker ever be your captain?
- 4:45Speaker 4: It's a bad sign for.
- 4:46Speaker 3: Our team, yeah.
- 4:46Speaker 5: No, that's a bad look.
- 4:49Speaker 3: I mean, you're looking for leadership in the kicker's room.
- 4:52Speaker 4: Unless you got, like, a grammatica out there. That's the
- 4:57Speaker 4: only exception I'll make for a kicker being a captain.
- 4:59Speaker 3: Right. Bear is going to join us here in a
- 5:02Speaker 3: few minutes.
- 5:02Speaker 1: He'll get us ready for a college football week one
- 5:05Speaker 1: here with his picks, the NFL as well. Field Yates
- 5:07Speaker 1: is going to join us. Gino Toretta is going to
- 5:10Speaker 1: join us as well in.
- 5:11Speaker 3: Hour number two.
- 5:12Speaker 1: How do you guys feel about Labor Day weekend? Sad weekend?
- 5:15Speaker 1: Fun weekend?
- 5:16Speaker 3: A little bit of both?
- 5:18Speaker 1: Because for me, it's the end of the summer, and
- 5:21Speaker 1: that makes me sad. Most people sad. But it's also
- 5:24Speaker 1: the start of football season.
- 5:25Speaker 3: It's a bittersweet holiday weekend, is it not?
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yes.
- 5:29Speaker 5: Yeah, I wouldn't put it up there with Memorial Day
- 5:32Speaker 5: weekend or July 4th weekend, but the fact that It means, okay,
- 5:36Speaker 5: we're getting to football now.
- 5:38Speaker 3: It's here.
- 5:39Speaker 2: I'm in.
- 5:40Speaker 5: I'm in.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I think it's about where you're at in life. For you,
- 5:42Speaker 1: kids back to school, you get football. You don't care
- 5:45Speaker 1: about the summer. You hate the beach. You hate the sand.
- 5:47Speaker 1: You hate the sun.
- 5:50Speaker 3: I hate everything. Except football. But football. What a weekend
- 5:55Speaker 3: for you.
- 5:56Speaker 4: Getting to Labor Day weekend is a win for me
- 5:58Speaker 4: just because you're getting to college football. You're getting to
- 6:02Speaker 4: the NFL. And then, Stu, we're in South Florida. We're
- 6:06Speaker 4: saying goodbye to weather that's like 110 degrees and saying
- 6:09Speaker 4: hello to weather that's like 85 degrees. That's a win
- 6:12Speaker 4: for us.
- 6:13Speaker 3: It won't be 85 down here for another five months.
- 6:18Speaker 5: Just in time for it to go back to 110.
- 6:21Speaker 3: Taylor, are you making a trip this weekend? Where are
- 6:23Speaker 3: you going this weekend?
- 6:24Speaker 4: I'm considering doing a drive to Baton Rouge, but it's
- 6:28Speaker 4: like a 12-hour drive.
- 6:29Speaker 3: Wow.
- 6:30Speaker 4: The tickets are reasonable. The drive is the unreasonable part.
- 6:33Speaker 3: It's hard to get to.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Up on a bird.
- 6:35Speaker 3: No, it's very hard to get to from here, I think, yeah.
- 6:38Speaker 4: And you would have to fly to New Orleans and
- 6:40Speaker 4: then rent a car and drive from New Orleans to
- 6:43Speaker 4: Baton Rouge. And at this point, Mikey, I've missed the
- 6:46Speaker 4: window where flights were in my budget.
- 6:49Speaker 3: Not a bad drive. 12 hours.
- 6:52Speaker 4: That's just 12 hours of me listening to a lot
- 6:55Speaker 4: of sports podcasts, really.
- 6:56Speaker 3: Yes.
- 6:56Speaker 1: You turned down a free trip to Dublin, Ireland to
- 6:59Speaker 1: see North Carolina play, and that was on a bird.
- 7:03Speaker 1: But you are willing to drive to Baton Rouge to
- 7:05Speaker 1: see LSU and Clemson, huh?
- 7:07Speaker 4: I hate international football. It's the same game every year.
- 7:11Speaker 4: It's terrible football. I don't care if it's my alma mater.
- 7:14Speaker 4: I would rather go see football in SEC country and
- 7:17Speaker 4: be rubbing elbows with the folks in Baton Rouge.
- 7:20Speaker 3: Go Tigers!
- 7:20Speaker 1: I figured no one loves international football more than you.
- 7:23Speaker 3: You're 1-0 playing international football.
- 7:27Speaker 4: People are going to retire that way too.

- 8:02Speaker 3: We'll update the polls here in just a second.
- 8:04Speaker 1: Mikey A., what's your Saturday going to look like? We're
- 8:06Speaker 1: headed into Labor Day weekend, a full slate of college football.
- 8:09Speaker 1: College game day is on the air. I mean, the
- 8:12Speaker 1: big noon kickoff is on. It is all happening. What
- 8:16Speaker 1: is Mikey A. 's Saturday going to look like?
- 8:18Speaker 5: I'm going to have both college game day and big
- 8:21Speaker 5: noon kickoff on on the two TVs in the morning.
- 8:24Speaker 5: I'll probably take a little bit of a break in
- 8:26Speaker 5: the midday and then it's just going to it's just
- 8:30Speaker 5: going to be nonstop college football.
- 8:31Speaker 3: Yeah, it's a.
- 8:32Speaker 1: Special day right up until midnight because I maintain that
- 8:35Speaker 1: the college football season does not start until Hawaii has
- 8:38Speaker 1: a home game at midnight Eastern and they do this weekend.
- 8:41Speaker 1: They are taking on Dan Mullen and his Elvis impersonator
- 8:45Speaker 1: and the UNLV running rebels.
- 8:47Speaker 3: That is a beauty.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Because if you're up a lot of money, you double down,
- 8:51Speaker 1: you take Hawaii. If you're down a lot of money,
- 8:53Speaker 1: you double down, you take Hawaii. But you always take Hawaii.
- 8:56Speaker 1: Put it on the poll, Taylor. Do you always take Hawaii?
- 8:59Speaker 4: Small spread in that one. I think it's three.
- 9:02Speaker 3: I think it's four, actually. Wow. Yeah, yeah. I think
- 9:05Speaker 3: Hawaii's getting four. Getting four points at home. It's a gift.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Let's update the polls here uh we wrap up the
- 9:12Speaker 1: week uh every week uh by updating the polls here
- 9:16Speaker 1: actually got 790 on x uh taylor what do you have.
- 9:19Speaker 4: For us when you think of elvis which city do
- 9:22Speaker 4: you think.
- 9:22Speaker 1: Of memphis easy it's wrong the two choices i don't
- 9:26Speaker 1: care what the polls were.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Memphis and las vegas 66 of the audience.
- 9:33Speaker 5: Memphis yes 66% of the audience is wrong.
- 9:40Speaker 4: Big one here.
- 9:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 9:42Speaker 4: Did Carolina win or did TCU lose?
- 9:45Speaker 3: You know what? I've been thinking about this all week.
- 9:48Speaker 2: I have.
- 9:50Speaker 3: And I think Carolina went out and won that football game.
- 9:52Speaker 3: I do.
- 9:52Speaker 4: 87% of the audience said yes.
- 9:56Speaker 2: All right.
- 10:01Speaker 3: Really? That's what I voted. Congratulations, Taylor, on a bye week.
- 10:06Speaker 3: How about that?
- 10:07Speaker 4: We might have lost a bye week, though, if you
- 10:09Speaker 4: saw the reports that came out yesterday.
- 10:11Speaker 3: What? Lombardi?
- 10:13Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:14Speaker 3: What happened? You didn't lose the bye week. You just
- 10:16Speaker 3: lost the GM.
- 10:16Speaker 4: There was a defensive coordinator. There's sex. There's drugs.
- 10:21Speaker 3: Oh, Jesus. Not good. Not good.
- 10:27Speaker 1: Didn't I say earlier this week that what Pablo Torre
- 10:31Speaker 1: is about to find out is that Bill Belichick always
- 10:34Speaker 1: has the last laugh?
- 10:36Speaker 4: Speaking of that poll, does Bill Belichick always have the
- 10:38Speaker 4: last laugh despite never laughing?
- 10:40Speaker 2: Yes.
- 10:41Speaker 4: 75% of the audience said yes.
- 10:43Speaker 2: All right.
- 10:44Speaker 3: There you go.
- 10:45Speaker 4: This is a big one from Stu. Does Stanford have
- 10:49Speaker 4: all the ingredients to be a great college football program
- 10:51Speaker 4: except for the players?
- 10:52Speaker 3: Yep, it'll be on display tonight, full display.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I mean, beautiful stadium, great crowd, beautiful area of the country,
- 10:58Speaker 1: just no players.
- 10:59Speaker 4: Every time you mention Stanford football, you mention Andrew Lux there,
- 11:03Speaker 4: like he's getting under center.
- 11:06Speaker 3: Listen, who knows? He finds the right judge. He might be.
- 11:08Speaker 3: He could now. He could now.
- 11:10Speaker 4: 76% of the audience says yes, Stanford does have all
- 11:15Speaker 4: the ingredients.
- 11:16Speaker 3: I would say Carolina as well. They would be in
- 11:18Speaker 3: that conversation.
- 11:20Speaker 1: As the school that has all the ingredients except the players,
- 11:23Speaker 1: Carolina would certainly be.
- 11:24Speaker 3: There, right?
- 11:25Speaker 4: It's like the Sleeping Giants conversation because Northwestern probably checks
- 11:28Speaker 4: a lot of those boxes too, like Major City.
- 11:31Speaker 3: No doubt.
- 11:31Speaker 4: The donors.
- 11:32Speaker 1: Yes, I told Mikey earlier during Studio Gots, Northwestern, one
- 11:35Speaker 1: of my picks.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Spoiler alert.
- 11:37Speaker 1: That Northwestern, a sneaky good team coming out of the
- 11:40Speaker 1: Big Ten this year.
- 11:40Speaker 3: How about that?
- 11:42Speaker 4: Would you want a Harvard quarterback to be your quarterback?
- 11:44Speaker 3: Hell no. My doctor, maybe.
- 11:51Speaker 4: 70% of the audience said no.
- 11:53Speaker 3: Right.
- 11:53Speaker 5: Crazy.
- 11:55Speaker 4: Big one here for Mel Kuyper. Are you done with
- 11:58Speaker 4: the sun?
- 12:01Speaker 1: Mel Kuyper said to us this week, we love him.
- 12:03Speaker 1: He's on the Mount Rushmore of guests here. that he
- 12:05Speaker 1: is done with the sun. I responded, yeah, but the
- 12:08Speaker 1: sun looks good on you, man. Mel looked good. He
- 12:10Speaker 1: looked refreshed.
- 12:11Speaker 3: What were the results here?
- 12:13Speaker 4: 62% of the audience said yes, they're done with the sun.
- 12:16Speaker 3: I can't stand it.
- 12:17Speaker 2: Be sure to catch live editions of Stu Gatz and
- 12:20Speaker 2: Company live weekdays at 3 p.m. Eastern, 12 p.m. Pacific.
- 12:26Speaker 4: Did Jeter have enough room to pull up before diving
- 12:29Speaker 4: into the stands?
- 12:30Speaker 3: Yes, this is courtesy of Bob Ryan. Big for Bob Ryan.
- 12:32Speaker 3: In his Twitter feed, he just.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Started blasting out random thoughts 22 hours apart about Derek
- 12:38Speaker 1: Jeter's catch where he leapt.
- 12:40Speaker 3: Into the stands.
- 12:40Speaker 4: 71% of the audience said, yep, Jeter, a little bit theatric.
- 12:47Speaker 3: Big win for Bob.
- 12:49Speaker 4: This one is courtesy of Charles Huff, the Memphis coach
- 12:53Speaker 4: who joined us this week.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Yes, we're supposed to go there. Call play.
- 12:56Speaker 4: Does everyone love an ice cream truck?
- 13:03Speaker 3: Who doesn't?
- 13:05Speaker 4: I mean, come on. 18% of the audience, because 82%
- 13:07Speaker 4: of the audience said yes.
- 13:08Speaker 3: Yeah, so 18. I mean, get a life.
- 13:10Speaker 4: A couple more here. If you had $ 3. 9 billion, would
- 13:14Speaker 4: you spend it on the Angels?
- 13:16Speaker 3: I wouldn't.
- 13:16Speaker 4: 85% of the audience said no.
- 13:27Speaker 1: But why am I presenting it as if all you
- 13:30Speaker 1: had was $ 3. 9 billion and that's it? Because if you
- 13:34Speaker 1: have $ 3. 9 billion, it stands to reason you have a
- 13:36Speaker 1: lot more.
- 13:38Speaker 2: Anyway.
- 13:39Speaker 4: This one might be the record this week. Do we
- 13:41Speaker 4: all know Stu Gatz is never going back to a gym?
- 13:49Speaker 3: Why are you laughing so hard, Taylor?
- 13:51Speaker 4: Because we all know it. Well, I agreed with it. 97%
- 13:55Speaker 4: of the audience said yes.
- 13:58Speaker 1: The 3% out there still thinks that these feet and
- 14:02Speaker 1: these eyes might see you, Jim, again.
- 14:05Speaker 4: Two more here.
- 14:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 14:06Speaker 4: Do people call Elon University the Harvard of the South?
- 14:09Speaker 3: No one does that. You said it yesterday. It was ridiculous.
- 14:14Speaker 3: It's a good school. Elon's a good school. It's a
- 14:17Speaker 3: nice private school. It's beautiful. I know someone who's gone there.
- 14:21Speaker 3: It's a great place. It is not Harvard.
- 14:23Speaker 4: 79% of the audience said, nope, nobody calls it that.
- 14:27Speaker 2: I do.
- 14:29Speaker 3: Put this on the poll.
- 14:29Speaker 1: Would you take an Elon quarterback as a transfer or
- 14:32Speaker 1: a Harvard quarterback as a transfer?
- 14:35Speaker 4: Last one here. And this is a big one.
- 14:36Speaker 2: Yes.
- 14:37Speaker 4: Should hot seat coaches have to coach from a coffin?
- 14:40Speaker 4: And if they lose, we put the final nail in it.
- 14:45Speaker 4: One of our best ideas yet.
- 14:48Speaker 3: A coffin game.
- 14:50Speaker 4: 86% of the audience said yes. Sign us up for
- 14:53Speaker 4: those games.
- 14:54Speaker 3: Those are the polls. All right, everyone, have a great
- 14:57Speaker 3: Labor Day weekend. Enjoy the college football.
