- 0:28If you would take your Bibles and open them to Luke 22 on this
- 0:33Good Friday service. Welcome everyone watching online
- 0:37and on the radio today. We're grateful you're with us.
- 0:43When Jesus instituted communion, he took the bread you remember,
- 0:47and He tells his disciples to take it and to eat it and to
- 0:52remember that His body is broken for you.
- 0:58And then He took the cup which is His blood shed for you, and
- 1:01He does the same thing. Luke records it this way.
- 1:05And Luke 2219 He took the bread and gave thanks and broke it and
- 1:09gave it to them, saying, this is my body which is given for you.
- 1:14Do this in remembrance of me. Likewise, He also took the cup
- 1:19after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood
- 1:23which is shed for you. Jesus was looking ahead when he
- 1:30said these words and today we look back.
- 1:35It had yet to happen when Jesus spoke these words, but now, 2000
- 1:40years later, we know it happened and Good Friday is the day that
- 1:44reminds us of these moments. Good Friday is often remembered
- 1:51as God's most painful moment, the most painful moment that
- 1:56Jesus ever experienced. And here we are today, together,
- 2:00remembering Jesus and the price that he paid for our salvation,
- 2:06the forgiveness of our sins. Jesus's body was broken.
- 2:13It's a heavy thing to consider. We know that Jesus hung
- 2:17painfully on a Roman cross, but prior to the cross he endured
- 2:25what's known as a Roman scourging or a torturous
- 2:30beading. It's described as being whipped
- 2:36with a short whip with single braided leather, thongs of
- 2:40various links, small iron balls, pieces, sharp pieces of sheep
- 2:46bones were tied at the intervals and the man being ripped, being
- 2:51beaten was stripped of his clothing and his hands were tied
- 2:55to an upright post. His back, his buttocks, his legs
- 3:01were then viciously beaten. The scourging was intended to
- 3:06weaken the victim to a state just short of collapse or even
- 3:13death. And as the Roman soldiers, one
- 3:16on either side, repeatedly struck the victims back with
- 3:19their full force, the iron balls would cut deep, confused
- 3:23contusions into his skin, striking the victim's back.
- 3:29The leather thongs and the sheep bones would cut into the skin
- 3:33and the subcutaneous tissues, and as the flogging and
- 3:37scourging continued, the lacerations would tear into the
- 3:41underlying skeletal muscles. We're describing a beating, but
- 3:46we have to consider that the beating we're describing is what
- 3:50innocent Jesus, God in human flesh, endured for you and for
- 3:55me. There's much talk in the
- 3:58Christian world today among many believers of what we deserve or
- 4:04what we have done or what we have to offer to God.
- 4:07And it's days like this that we have to step back and, and
- 4:10really ask the question with all honesty and all sincerity.
- 4:14What is it exactly that you and I have to offer to God?
- 4:19What is it that we would in any way require God to owe us
- 4:24anything? Often in a scourging there were
- 4:29two that would beat one on either side of the victim.
- 4:32They took turns. It was not uncommon for kidneys
- 4:36in the spleen and other organs to be exposed and to be slashed
- 4:42under the speeding. Almost always a man would die
- 4:46under this, not having to face the cross.
- 4:50A scourging would be the step prior to the cross, and yet
- 4:53Jesus enduring to the end, would then take and pick up his cross
- 4:57and carry under its load, its load upon its be his beat up
- 5:01body. When Jesus was instituting
- 5:05communion, He had this on his mind.
- 5:10He knew this would take place. He understood what he would
- 5:14face. Crucifixion If a man endured the
- 5:20scourging, he would then be crucified.
- 5:24Invented by the Persians, crucifixion was a horrible way
- 5:27to die. They believed, the Persians did,
- 5:31that the earth was sacred, and so the criminal was then lifted
- 5:35up off of the ground so that his death would not defile the
- 5:39earth. Crucifixion, one writer says, is
- 5:43the most terrible and cruel death that a man has ever
- 5:47devised for taking vengeance on his fellow man.
- 5:51Cicero, the philosopher, would say it's the most cruel and most
- 5:55horrible torture. Tacitus, the historian, called
- 6:00it a torture only fit for slaves.
- 6:04While the Persians invented it, the Romans perfected it and
- 6:08throughout history used it more often than anyone else that has
- 6:14been described. Some estimate that they killed
- 6:1730,000 Jews alone by crucifixion.
- 6:21The Romans and it sent a message.
- 6:24Don't mess with Rome. Rome kept it exclusively for
- 6:28rebels, runaway slaves, and the lowest type of criminal.
- 6:34It was such a cruel way to punish that they did not crucify
- 6:40their own citizens. Crucifixion would have involved
- 6:45laying Jesus on his open, lacerated bleeding back upon a
- 6:51rough, splintery piece of wood. The Roman soldiers would then
- 6:57take spikes, five to seven of them, attaching with a long
- 7:01hammer between the two arm bones at the wrist, crushing the
- 7:06median nerve as his hand were outstretched on the crossbeam.
- 7:11It was said that the pain was absolutely unbearable.
- 7:15In fact, it's the pain would be literally beyond what words
- 7:21could describe. They had to invent a new word.
- 7:25Excruciating. This word literally means out of
- 7:30the cross. They created a new word because
- 7:34there was nothing in the language at the time that could
- 7:37describe the intense anguish caused during the crucifixion.
- 7:43A man would die by asphyxiation or cardiac arrest hanging on a
- 7:50cross. Jesus would have been hoisted as
- 7:54the crossbar was attached to the vertical stake, nails driven
- 7:58through his feet. The nerves in his feet would
- 8:01have been crushed. Severed nerves were bad enough,
- 8:05but his arms would have been immediately stretched out,
- 8:09probably about 6 inches in length.
- 8:12Both shoulders would have been dislocated.
- 8:14When Jesus takes the bread and he says take, eat, this is my
- 8:19body. This is what he had in mind, a
- 8:25very torturous, painful way for a person to die.
- 8:28Jesus exchanged his life for yours and for mine.
- 8:34His perfect, sinless offering provided the way of escape for
- 8:37us. The Bible puts it this way in
- 8:41Second Corinthians chapter 5, verse 21.
- 8:44For He made him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might
- 8:50become the righteousness of God in Him.
- 8:54Jesus suffered in silence throughout all his hours of
- 8:58interrogation, torture, and agony.
- 9:02Isaiah would put it this way. He was oppressed and he was
- 9:06afflicted, yet He opened not his mouth.
- 9:10He was led as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before
- 9:13its shearers is silent, so He opened not his mouth.
- 9:18Yet when the weight of humanity sends was poured out upon him,
- 9:23one of His final sayings. One is the final things Jesus
- 9:27says before he dies. He says this at about the 9th
- 9:32hour. Jesus cries out.
- 9:34Eli, Eli. Lama Sabakhthani, That is my
- 9:38God. My God, why have you forsaken
- 9:42me? Forsaken.
- 9:44The word means deserted, abandoned, rejected.
- 9:52The whole scene is shocking to us, these words especially the
- 9:58eternal Son of God, crying out to the Father, hanging on the
- 10:01cross with what little energy he has left.
- 10:07Why have you forsaken me? The words disarm us and cause us
- 10:13to wonder at times. What did he mean?
- 10:16As hard as it is for us as human beings to even fathom what was
- 10:19taking place here, we have to stand back as we do in reserve
- 10:23this time on Friday, as many churches around the world are
- 10:27doing the same thing. We stand on holy ground as we
- 10:32peek into this moment in the life of Jesus.
- 10:37The impact of this moment is so significant, it bears a little
- 10:42bit of time to consider. If we get a better understanding
- 10:46of what Jesus actually went through.
- 10:49It would impact our thinking and melt our hearts and change the
- 10:54way that we live our lives, giving us a greater appreciation
- 10:59for the cross more than a piece of jewelry or a building
- 11:03declaration, decoration or something that we take for
- 11:07granted. When Jesus said, My God, my God,
- 11:11why have you forsaken me? These were not the delusions of
- 11:14a man in pain as some suggest. His faith was not failing him.
- 11:20I believe that as Christ was hanging there at this moment, He
- 11:24was bearing the sins of the world.
- 11:27It's easy to say sins of the world.
- 11:28It's even easy to think about the sins of the world.
- 11:32It's a beautiful statement when Jesus teaches us in John chapter
- 11:353 that God so loved the world that he gave His only begotten
- 11:39Son, that whosoever would believe in him would not perish,
- 11:43but have everlasting life. Beautiful to think about what
- 11:46God has done for the world, but it's even more beautiful when
- 11:50you personalize it and you think about what God has done for you
- 11:56and for me, bearing the sins of my life, not merely the world.
- 12:04He was dying as a substitute for you and for me.
- 12:09He was bearing your sin at that moment, and bearing mine as
- 12:14well. To Him was imputed the guilt of
- 12:19all of our sins, and He was suffering the necessary
- 12:24punishment for those sins on our behalf, satisfying the wrath of
- 12:29God against sinners on our behalf.
- 12:35The essence of that punishment is the outpouring of God's wrath
- 12:39upon sinners. And in some mysterious way that
- 12:43we can never fully understand, during those awful hours on the
- 12:46cross, the Father was pouring out the full measure of His
- 12:50wrath against sin, and the recipient of that wrath was
- 12:54God's own beloved Son. Listen, God was punishing Jesus
- 12:58as if He had personally committed every wicked deed
- 13:04committed by every wicked Sinner, and in so doing He could
- 13:09treat and forgive those redeemed as if they had lived Christ's
- 13:14perfect life of righteousness. There is a great exchange when
- 13:19you and I are born again. We receive the righteousness of
- 13:22Christ as He paid the price for our sins.
- 13:28We know there was a moment at Calvary where the sin of the
- 13:30world was put upon him, and I believe that is the moment.
- 13:35What's so significant about sin? Well, sin separates.
- 13:40Sin produces death. The Bible says both physical
- 13:44death but also spiritual death. Sin is a powerful separator.
- 13:51Sin separates friends from friends, parents from children,
- 13:57marriages, relationships, but more importantly sin separates
- 14:02man from God and even here for a moment the Son from the Father.
- 14:10The Bible says that God cannot look upon sin.
- 14:13Habakkuk chapter one verse 13. The Bible says you are of purer
- 14:17eyes than behold, than to behold evil, and cannot look on
- 14:21wickedness. Why do you look on those who
- 14:23deal treacherously and hold your tongue when the wicked devours a
- 14:28person more righteous than he? Jesus was forsaken by God so
- 14:33that you and I would never have to be again.
- 14:36In Hebrews chapter 13 and verse 5 the Bible says, let your
- 14:40conduct be without covetousness. Be content with such things as
- 14:44you have. For He himself said, I will
- 14:47never leave you or forsake you. Even John records for us these
- 14:53final words that when Jesus had received the sour wine, he said
- 14:58it is finished and it bowing his head, he gave up his spirit.
- 15:06Today is often referred to as Good Friday.
- 15:11It's a little ironic that Jesus would have to endure so much bad
- 15:17in order for us to enjoy so much good.
- 15:21But it's not merely a Good Friday, it's a great Friday
- 15:25because God did such a great thing.
- 15:29Your sins can be forgiven through the broken body in the
- 15:34shed blood of Jesus Christ that God has provided a way for you.
- 15:40Now is not a time to just attend another religious service, go
- 15:46home, or go back to work or carry on your day, but rather
- 15:51now is a time to get serious with God who loves you, to take
- 15:56in all seriousness exactly what this exchange was.
- 16:01You understand now that it's more than responding to an
- 16:05invitation or standing at a service or praying a prayer of
- 16:11confession. As important of all as all those
- 16:14are, the Bible says that we're to confess with our mouth the
- 16:19Lord Jesus and believe in our heart that God raised him from
- 16:22the dead. Very important.
- 16:24The Bible teaches us the seriousness and the the
- 16:28significance of the pain and of sin, and that's unconfessed and
- 16:33unforgiven. It will send a man or woman
- 16:36eternally apart from God. Hell awaits, or even more
- 16:42serious than hell, the lake of fire awaits all those who reject
- 16:47Christ. We have to stand back and
- 16:50consider all that Jesus has done in our lives and apply it, the
- 16:55blood to our own hearts and our own lives.
- 16:57And saying today, Lord, I'm a Sinner, I admit it.
- 17:02I place my trust and my faith in Jesus Christ.
- 17:05I surrender my life with our own lips, believing with our hearts
- 17:10that I believe Jesus, you were beaten for me.
- 17:15I believe that you died on the cross for me, and as we'll see
- 17:21in a few days, for us, it's going to be tomorrow.
- 17:24We're not even going to wait the full 3 days, but we'll be here
- 17:28celebrating the resurrected life of Jesus.
- 17:33That they buried him in a tomb, believing that this issue was
- 17:37solved and settled, but in reality, real life was just
- 17:42beginning. For so many, it's important that
- 17:46you repent of your sin to turn toward Jesus and allow him to
- 17:54fill your life with life. So we do gather very regularly,
- 18:04perhaps even religiously, to consider this day.
- 18:09You happen to be in a church where we consider these things
- 18:12every time we gather. Why?
- 18:15Because the Bible does. The Bible reminds us of the
- 18:19finished work of Jesus Christ. The Bible reminds us and is such
- 18:24a great tool to help us understand who we are and where
- 18:29we are apart from Christ. Of course, on the other side of
- 18:33faith, the Bible also tells us who we are and where we are in
- 18:37Christ. Or even today on this Good
- 18:40Friday, follower of Christ, born again believer, God would remind
- 18:45you in this very truth on this Good Friday, as we consider the
- 18:49beating in the crucifixion, I mean the the the torturous death
- 18:54that Jesus endured for us. We're reminded even today,
- 18:58believer, that you are complete in Christ.
- 19:04The full package is yours by faith in Jesus today.
- 19:09I know often in a church like ours that magnifies what the
- 19:13Bible magnifies. And you know the Bible magnifies
- 19:16the grace of God that all that we enjoy today we don't deserve,
- 19:22we couldn't work for, we couldn't earn.
- 19:26There's nothing in our lives whatever merit the favorable
- 19:29response of God on our behalf. No, we received the grace of God
- 19:34in the mercy of God, in the goodness of God.
- 19:37But it would be easy in a church like ours that emphasizes the
- 19:40grace of God to say, oh, you know, you, you teach cheap
- 19:43grace. That's that's cheap grace.
- 19:47To which I would say today on Good Friday, the grace of God
- 19:50did not come to you cheaply. A great price was paid.
- 19:58And I'm so grateful that Jesus Christ paid the price that you
- 20:02and I could never. Ever in a million kajillion
- 20:05years even offer a small part of what the perfect Son of God
- 20:11offered. So as we leave here today
- 20:15thinking about the death of Christ, we don't end with a
- 20:19song. We don't really even end like we
- 20:22typically do. We just invite you to leave and
- 20:26go back into life like the followers of Christ did at the
- 20:31crucifixion. Some of them ran away, looked
- 20:34from a distance, but when all was said and done and Jesus was
- 20:38buried, they went home and they went back into life pondering
- 20:43the reality, the new reality of her life.
- 20:45They don't have him anymore. And the intent, I believe, of a
- 20:49Friday service like this is to have in your mind a heaviness
- 20:53and a weight. You could even ask for God to
- 20:57give you a little bit of the weight or heaviness that comes
- 21:04to mind when we think of what Jesus did for us.
- 21:08And then we gather again in our future services here to
- 21:12celebrate the resurrection. Because although we although we
- 21:16leave here today with the death of Christ, you can be assured
- 21:22that while today is Good Friday, Sunday's coming and the work of
- 21:27God will be complete. So Father, we come and we
- 21:31recognize and we in some small way, or perhaps for the very
- 21:36first time, the weight of all that you have accomplished.
- 21:39Just as hitting some right now for the first time, they're,
- 21:42they're considering the reality of all that has taken place in
- 21:47their lives that you have done for them that we leave with a
- 21:50sense of awe and respect and honor and worship and
- 21:57appreciation for your broken body and your shed blood in
- 22:03Jesus name, Amen. God bless you.
