- 0:00Speaker 1: We're all in the iHeart Music Lounge live. This crowd
- 0:06Speaker 1: over here has got to get with it.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Let's go. Get it up. That's better. That's better. That's better.
- 0:15Speaker 2: That's better, though. They were dead, though. They were dead
- 0:17Speaker 2: over there. I don't know.
- 0:18Speaker 1: These guys are usually pretty loud and obnoxious, but not tonight. Well,
- 0:23Speaker 1: thank you and welcome to our first UConn Men's Basketball
- 0:26Speaker 1: Coaches Show of the season. I'm Mike Crispino with Dan Hurley.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I believe Andrea's coming in here sometime, supposedly, to make
- 0:34Speaker 1: an appearance. We might get her on the show. I
- 0:36Speaker 1: don't know.
- 0:37Speaker 2: Maybe. I don't know about that. You don't know about that?
- 0:40Speaker 2: Keep her.
- 0:42Speaker 1: We are going to cover a bunch of stuff here
- 0:44Speaker 1: in the next several minutes, including, you know, we're going
- 0:47Speaker 1: to get to know the Huskies. We've got some new guys,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and you're going to help me with some pronunciations because.
- 0:52Speaker 2: Don't ask me their last name. Machovsky.
- 0:56Speaker 1: I had to start saying that because the guy got
- 0:58Speaker 1: nine points in that game.
- 0:59Speaker 3: I'm still struggling to call him Nils because it's spelled Nils.
- 1:06Speaker 1: You're thinking Nils Lofgren, but it's not. It's Nils Giffey.
- 1:09Speaker 2: Yeah, it's like Nils, but the way it's spelled is
- 1:12Speaker 2: like Nils. All right, we're going to go through the roster.
- 1:18Speaker 2: So I just give him a nickname. Oh, yeah? What
- 1:20Speaker 2: is his? He's a pirate. He's a pirate. He looks
- 1:22Speaker 2: like a pirate. We had some good.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Ones lately over the last few years. Joey California was
- 1:27Speaker 1: one of your best, I thought.
- 1:29Speaker 3: I mean, he made a lot of money. They sold
- 1:32Speaker 3: a lot of merch, right? Joey California, and that was
- 1:36Speaker 3: all me.
- 1:36Speaker 2: You almost forgot his name. You almost forgot what his
- 1:38Speaker 2: real name was. I did. Well, it was Calcaterra. Yes,
- 1:41Speaker 2: that's correct. I mean, that's a tough one. When you're
- 1:43Speaker 2: screaming at somebody, it's hard to get that.
- 1:45Speaker 1: Well, you must know some Italians from back in Jersey.
- 1:47Speaker 2: Come on. Oh, a lot. Bayonne. It loaded with them.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Bayonne Italians, Jersey City Italians. It loaded with them.
- 1:53Speaker 1: Shut up. So we're going to talk about the schedule,
- 1:55Speaker 1: the Big East Conference, how I spent my summer vacation,
- 1:58Speaker 1: because I saw some photos of vacationing from the coach,
- 2:02Speaker 1: which doesn't happen very often. We're going to talk about transfers,
- 2:06Speaker 1: Europe to the Americas, what's going on there, the legislation.
- 2:10Speaker 1: All that stuff's going to be covered in the UConn
- 2:12Speaker 1: Men's Basketball Coaches Show. But I've got to start these
- 2:15Speaker 1: first shows with what happened. In Indianapolis, because it was
- 2:20Speaker 1: such a great run for the Huskies. And we got
- 2:23Speaker 1: within one minute of beating Michigan. And no one said
- 2:27Speaker 1: that could be done. I mean, you know, the so-called
- 2:29Speaker 1: talking heads, experts. Michigan's beating everybody by 15, 20, 30.
- 2:34Speaker 2: And we're right there to the final minute.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I mean, you've won them. Now you had to lose one.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Can you describe the difference emotionally, what that's about?
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I mean, it's just a lot.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Tougher you know like you're um you know you're gutted
- 2:51Speaker 3: over it but you're proud too of of uh just
- 2:55Speaker 3: how hard the team fought because we had to come
- 2:56Speaker 3: back from some like really demoralizing losses throughout the year
- 3:00Speaker 3: i mean we had a great non-conference but then we
- 3:03Speaker 3: had the the creighton home game was a real brutal
- 3:07Speaker 3: one the marquette road at the end of the regular
- 3:11Speaker 3: season to not win the regular season the no show
- 3:14Speaker 3: in the big east tournament championship game where we just
- 3:16Speaker 3: were Just dreadful. And then, you know, and then Silas
- 3:21Speaker 3: is hurt. And you're going into that opening weekend. You
- 3:23Speaker 3: know Furman's, like, dangerous. And then you're playing, like, UCLA.
- 3:28Speaker 3: And you know the draw is a monster, you know. Like,
- 3:30Speaker 3: the draw is, like, you know, UCLA. You get through Furman, UCLA.
- 3:34Speaker 3: And then, like, Michigan State. And then, like, Duke, St.
- 3:38Speaker 2: John's.
- 3:39Speaker 3: And then, so it's, like, heavy. But, yeah, I mean,
- 3:43Speaker 3: the game itself, you know, we felt good about the
- 3:46Speaker 3: Illinois matchup. because we played them earlier. And then, you know,
- 3:50Speaker 3: but the Michigan, just our strength was really.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Tarras' domination.
- 3:57Speaker 3: You know, like literally if we could have played any
- 3:59Speaker 3: other team in that spot, I think we would have
- 4:01Speaker 3: won it. But they just had that front court, the
- 4:04Speaker 3: size that was tough on Tarras. You know, we played
- 4:08Speaker 3: the type of game under the terms that we wanted
- 4:11Speaker 3: to play it, in terms of the pace, low possessions,
- 4:14Speaker 3: you know, We kind of, like, dragged them into our
- 4:16Speaker 3: type of game. You know, we didn't make quite enough shots. And,
- 4:22Speaker 3: you know, and then again, it was just a bad
- 4:24Speaker 3: matchup for, you know, the guy that dominated the tournament
- 4:28Speaker 3: for us in Terrace. Just, you know, the 7-3 guy, Johnson,
- 4:34Speaker 3: I mean, and Yaxel. I mean, they had three, like,
- 4:38Speaker 3: top 12 picks, three, four, and five. So they were
- 4:41Speaker 3: worthy champions, and... I think it was painful when I
- 4:45Speaker 3: went back and watched the games in the summer because
- 4:48Speaker 3: there were these windows and these plays that you're trying
- 4:53Speaker 3: to instill in your current team. How one possession, you're
- 4:58Speaker 3: up five with the ball with an open three. You
- 5:01Speaker 3: miss it, they go down, score a three-point play. Every
- 5:07Speaker 3: possession is so important. You're trying to instill it to
- 5:10Speaker 3: your current team because you know how The championship game
- 5:14Speaker 3: could have played out differently if a possession here or
- 5:17Speaker 3: there went differently.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I still think of that one offensive
- 5:22Speaker 1: rebound they got going over our backs. No call, no whistle,
- 5:27Speaker 1: and the ball goes in. And the one I actually
- 5:30Speaker 1: talked to Solo about this the other day, he had
- 5:33Speaker 1: that bank shot. I think in the final minute, if
- 5:35Speaker 1: that goes in, I think we get it to one
- 5:38Speaker 1: or something. I mean, it didn't go in.
- 5:39Speaker 2: This guy's trying... What do people say? They say, trigger?
- 5:43Speaker 2: He's trying to trigger me right now. I got to
- 5:46Speaker 2: get it out, man. With the reps or whatever. With
- 5:48Speaker 2: the reps.
- 5:49Speaker 3: I mean.
- 5:49Speaker 1: But I mean, think about that's how close the whole
- 5:51Speaker 1: thing was.
- 5:52Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 5:53Speaker 3: I mean, that's where the best thing is always to
- 5:57Speaker 3: have like a team that's like a dominant team.
- 6:00Speaker 2: Yeah, right.
- 6:00Speaker 3: You know, so that like you're able to play with
- 6:02Speaker 3: a cushion. You know, you... Watching them, it was... you know, we,
- 6:07Speaker 3: we knew that if we played them, you know, we
- 6:09Speaker 3: played them 10 times, we, you know, it'd be hard
- 6:12Speaker 3: for us to win, um, you know, more than a
- 6:14Speaker 3: couple of those games, but that's what makes March Madness
- 6:17Speaker 3: so unique and such an awesome sporting event is like,
- 6:20Speaker 3: you know, it's just, it's just one game for all
- 6:22Speaker 3: the marbles. It's why it's so hard to win it.
- 6:24Speaker 3: And it's so hard to advance in it. But, um, yeah,
- 6:28Speaker 3: I mean, we gave ourselves a shot and, uh, You know,
- 6:31Speaker 3: it was a lot of emotion in the room.
- 6:34Speaker 2: I mean, like you think about what people had on
- 6:35Speaker 2: the line there.
- 6:37Speaker 3: I mean, Caravan, what he had on the line. I mean,
- 6:39Speaker 3: just three national championship titles. I mean, stuff that hadn't
- 6:43Speaker 3: been done since Bill Walton.
- 6:46Speaker 2: Forever. Kareem.
- 6:49Speaker 1: And they had a team of men. We're going to
- 6:51Speaker 1: get off this in a second. I know it's triggering you.
- 6:54Speaker 2: They had a team of men. Come on.
- 6:55Speaker 1: They had all those transfer guys. Yaxel Landenborg. Did you
- 6:59Speaker 1: see what he did with Doncic the other night? He
- 7:01Speaker 1: got in his face. He started in his first game
- 7:04Speaker 1: in the NBA. He was acting like, I had a
- 7:06Speaker 1: lot of respect for Luka Doncic, but then I played
- 7:09Speaker 1: against him.
- 7:09Speaker 2: I got no respect for him. That's why they win.
- 7:11Speaker 2: That's why they won.
- 7:12Speaker 3: I mean, personalities are important in this whole, in sports, obviously,
- 7:18Speaker 3: in general. You've got to have people that, that just
- 7:21Speaker 3: walk into the arena believing in themselves and have that
- 7:25Speaker 3: kind of a little bit.
- 7:30Speaker 2: Of a jerk. You're getting into these big moments.
- 7:34Speaker 3: You've got to have some level of confidence about you
- 7:37Speaker 3: that you think you're unbeatable.
- 7:39Speaker 1: Yeah, a chip on the shoulder is a good thing.
- 7:40Speaker 1: All right, back with the coach, Dan Hurley with us.
