Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Bob Hancox: Asthma and Respiratory Foundation Medical Director on new research revealing 1 in 5 Kiwis impacted by respiratory disease
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: One million New Zealanders are suffering from respiratory disease. That's
- 0:03Speaker 1: far worse than previously thought. This is according to a
- 0:06Speaker 1: new report from the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation, which found
- 0:09Speaker 1: one in five Kiwis are affected. Previously twenty twenty one,
- 0:13Speaker 1: that was one in seven. Bob Hancocks as the Asthma
- 0:16Speaker 1: and Richesty Foundation Medical Director, Professor. He's with us this morning.
- 0:20Speaker 1: Good morning, good morning.
- 0:22Speaker 2: How are you good?
- 0:22Speaker 1: Thank you Bob. How did we get something really wrong
- 0:25Speaker 1: here or how did why the big difference?
- 0:29Speaker 2: I think we've just got better data now and as
- 0:32Speaker 2: these reports have been done in updated several times each time,
- 0:36Speaker 2: we have better data and we we get a more
- 0:40Speaker 2: accurate idea of just how many people are suffering from
- 0:43Speaker 2: respiratory disease. So I think that's why.
- 0:46Speaker 1: The difference one in five. How do we compare to
- 0:49Speaker 1: other similar countries.
- 0:52Speaker 2: That's a good question. We haven't done a direct comparison.
- 0:55Speaker 2: I suspect we're not. We would be in the leading
- 0:58Speaker 2: the pact, but may not be much further ahead compared
- 1:03Speaker 2: to countries that like Australia and Britain and other places
- 1:06Speaker 2: that we might compare ourselves to because they have major
- 1:09Speaker 2: problems with respiratory disease as well. But at least with
- 1:12Speaker 2: this report, which was like an excellent report from Lucy
- 1:15Speaker 2: Tafa Barnard and James Zang, at least with this report,
- 1:18Speaker 2: we've got a better handle on how much of a
- 1:21Speaker 2: problem we have out there, and you know we're going
- 1:24Speaker 2: to do anything about it. That's really really important.
- 1:27Speaker 1: What diseases are we talking about, sma and things like.
- 1:30Speaker 2: That, Well, the report mostly covers asthma, COPD, and other
- 1:35Speaker 2: disease of the airways called bronchi extocyst, which people may
- 1:38Speaker 2: or may not have heard of, but the big two
- 1:40Speaker 2: are asthma and COPD. It also looked at pneumonia in
- 1:44Speaker 2: children and as well, because that's also of concern. But
- 1:51Speaker 2: there is some good news in here. The good news
- 1:55Speaker 2: is that with the work of a number of health
- 1:59Speaker 2: professionals around New Zealand and the Foundation, we have managed
- 2:02Speaker 2: to improve some of those statistics. So we haven't reduced
- 2:08Speaker 2: a number of people with asthma, but we've certainly made
- 2:10Speaker 2: a big dent in the number of people who have
- 2:13Speaker 2: severe enough asthma that they need to come to hospital.
- 2:15Speaker 2: So the Foundation set a target a few years ago,
- 2:19Speaker 2: trying to get a twenty five percent reduction in hospitalizations
- 2:24Speaker 2: by twenty twenty five. And we've already hit that tiger
- 2:26Speaker 2: for asthma, and we've already hit that tiger for COPD.
- 2:30Speaker 2: So there is good news in here as well as
- 2:32Speaker 2: a wake up called just how many people are suffering
- 2:35Speaker 2: from respiratory disease?
- 2:36Speaker 1: All right, interesting stuff, Bob, thank you very much for
- 2:38Speaker 1: your time. We really appreciate it. Bob Hancock's Asthma and
- 2:40Speaker 1: Respiratory Foundation medical director professor telling us there that yes,
- 2:45Speaker 1: things have gotten worse because we are perhaps accounting for
- 2:48Speaker 1: them better. One and five, not one and seven of
- 2:51Speaker 1: us suffer from a respiratory disease, but we are managing
- 2:56Speaker 1: to stay out of hospital. Well more of us managing
- 2:59Speaker 1: this stay out of hospital with those conditions.
