- Jaba: Hello everybody, welcome back to the Scout and the Speculator podcast. Just had my first ever mishap while ⁓ introducing an episode. This is the first time we had to do a second take, not really sure what's going on, but ⁓ we're both feeling pretty sharp because we have some exciting news to share today. it's Monday, ⁓ September 28th. We didn't record yesterday. We've been recording so much it feels a little weird going a day without ⁓ you know, kind of getting anything on the ledger. So we're excited to be back. ⁓ this is one of your two co-hosts, Will Jarvis, also known as Jabba Cards. Hezo is joined by Jeremy Brown of Perfect Game Baseball, more importantly known as JGB underscore cards underscore. And ⁓ this is a episode of Portfolio Pals. This is the second episode of Portfolio Pals, and we've really underscore_underscore_: Yep. Shit. Jaba: Unintentionally we've kind of set ourselves now a ⁓ a high bar that I feel like we're gonna be chasing for a long time. ⁓ this episode is gonna be titled ⁓ Feelin' Super. Jeremy, you wanna tell the folks why we're feeling super? underscore_underscore_: Mm-hmm. Yeah. Because we saw Haley's comet. Is that why? We saw Haley's comet. So I was flying out to Dallas on Friday. I was in the airport and I just ⁓ texted and I'm like, hey, ⁓ the this Talon Haley super's up. It's at twenty five hundred OBO. I thought like I thought we put in an offer at the time, I believe, of fifteen hundred right away. I don't feel bad talking numbers because you can go look and see what we paid for it on card ladder. Jaba: We did. Yeah. It was fifteen. underscore_underscore_: And for full transparency, if you don't have card ladder, use our code. Just kidding, we don't have a code. We paid eighteen hundred for it. ⁓ like it's out there. I don't I don't think you object to that, Jaba. Maybe you do. If you do we can cut this, but Jaba: No. I mean I I think everyone kinda knows. I mean, we're not, you know, huge spenders. I mean, we we spend a a nice bit, but ⁓ I think hopefully people get the sense from us that we're not, you know, peacocking or, you know, blindly throwing money around. I think anyone who kinda knows us knows that this the the kind of gravity of this purchase. I mean, this was I think both of our first superfractor ever. ⁓ underscore_underscore_: No. Correct. ⁓ my first super auto, yes. I do have a non super auto of like Johnny Farmello's fifth year of Bowman. Yeah. But anyway, like Jaba: Farmello. Yeah. but yeah, so th th this was a huge one for us and we're really excited about it. And yeah, like you said, I mean it's public information, it's out there, it's not like it's ⁓ gold where it could have been, card one, two or three. so yeah, we paid we paid eighteen hundred for it. ⁓ again, I think us being able to do this and split cards definitely opens up opportunities. underscore_underscore_: Right. Yep. Quite literally a one of one. Yeah, like I would have looked at that card and said, ⁓ I wish, and then just never got it, you know? Like that would have been the end of like the dream. But and in all honesty, like we went in at fifteen, so we were a thousand under the ask originally, and I'm like, you know what, somebody's just probably gonna bin this at full by the time I even land. Which I I and I don't wanna beat a dead horse. We're not doing this to pump Talon Haley Market, I promise. Jaba: Yeah. Yeah, so I Yeah. underscore_underscore_: But without him having any true color autos pop aside from that one true red, like obviously even if he had a full rainbow, this is his best card. But now we can say we have the best card in a market that really has no autos. Like Jaba: Yeah, and I mean th th this was not like our plan. It's not like 'cause I I mean the first reel we posted on Instagram was about Tal and Haley and we were like, Okay, well we'll buy some blues and golds and underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Jaba: you know, we wanted to balance that fine line of putting our money where our mouth is, but also not being ridiculous and saying, ⁓ okay, well, you know, we can go buy a super. You know, obviously most people can't. And B, you know, we didn't want it to look like a pump and dump. You know, with our portfolio pellets, that's the last thing we want this to look like. Like we don't want it to look like we're saying, you know, buy this guy, buy this guy, then all of a sudden you see us selling a super fractor. Like that's not the plan. but yeah, as you said, I think the most exciting underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Jaba: part of this and it it it's the weirdest thing I've ever seen in Bowman. I I can't recall this happening with a guy. Haley has had fifty seven base sales, one green, two green lava, one gold, one gold shimmer, one orange shimmer, one orange wave, one gold ink, two reds, and a superfractor. I'm not even sure that there is a true gold. ⁓ so underscore_underscore_: So that was listed as true gold, so maybe the algorithm pulled it as true gold, but it was gold shimmer on auction. I w I was watching that so Jaba: Okay, so yeah, so our whole thing is there has not been a true gold, true blue, or true orange to surface yet. There was one true red that we barely missed. And I think that missing that was kind of why we were like, all right, like let's just go for this, because we were kicking ourselves for missing that. We missed it by like ten bucks. ⁓ But yeah, I mean inadvertently we're now nineteen days out from release. underscore_underscore_: Yep. Jaba: And it's not like there's redemptions of these. Like we're not just saying, like, ⁓ there's no, you know, physical redeemed cards. Like there have been zero. There's zero on eBay. ⁓ underscore_underscore_: No. Jaba: Again, I've never seen this in my life. So I I think obviously the super fractor is kind of the pinnacle. And this wasn't like us necessarily being, you know, sharp saying, ⁓ okay, well, there's no true color. There might not be true color. Let's buy the super. That's gonna increase the value more. Like that wasn't really the intention. But at the same time, you know, once we bought it and we were kind of kicking that around, we were like, Okay, well this could actually, you know and obviously, you know, he's not he's not the hottest name, right? underscore_underscore_: No. No. Cult. Jaba: It it's not like he's like a eighty dollar base auto where people are falling all over themselves trying to get him, but he is a guy we believe in. And if it remains the fact that there's no true orange, black, gold, or blues up, ⁓ you have to think that the super becomes more valuable. And I mean, I know in the short term we're not looking to sell it. You know, we're not I mean, if someone came and offered us like three grand, I think we'd probably have a tough time turning it down. But we're also underscore_underscore_: Right. Jaba: you know, not trying to buy it and flip it. ⁓ I think we'll probably send it into PSA. There's a whole debate to be had about grading supers. I think it makes sense just from a encapsulation perspective. but ⁓ yeah. So that was kind of the big add to portfolio pals this week. That was really only underscore_underscore_: No. Yep. Solely to protect it. Yeah. That was kind of it, I think, realistically too. Like the only Jaba: Yeah, 'cause w once that came up we were kinda like, okay, well we're not bidding on other stuff. We're not chasing other stuff until we know the resolution of that because it's obviously a big ⁓ chunk of change and chunk of our ⁓ budget for this. So yeah, we got that. We're thrilled about it. you know, we'll we'll see what happens. It ⁓ it shipped this morning, it's gotta go to authentication, so I'll probably see that thing in two weeks. ⁓ underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Yeah. Jaba: But ⁓ re rest assured it'll be blasted all over everyone's timeline once it's in. ⁓ shifting gears a little bit, kinda staying in the portfolio pals type realm, but ⁓ we wanted to add a segment to it, especially in a week where we only added one card. ⁓ we're just gonna talk about kind of our snipes of the week, our deals of the week. And these are not cards that we split. This is more meant to be underscore_underscore_: Yep. Jaba: I don't want to say all like low end, you know, great deals we got. ⁓ some of them might be, you know, better cards of better players. But we're kind of focusing on, you know, either eBay snipes or cards that we just got ⁓ for a good deal and you know, talking about them, kind of showing how I don't wanna say easy it is to get some of these good deals, but how, you know, they pop up and how we get them. And I think we wanna kinda share our methods or just where we got lucky and tell you how you can Get lucky too. So, Jeremy, I'll let you kick off talking about your snipes. I don't even know what you're gonna talk about. underscore_underscore_: I know you're not. So like I I think the biggest thing for me is all right, we're two heading into three weeks out. Like there aren't gonna be deals to be had anymore. If you told me that, I'd be like, yeah, that makes sense. So market's settling, numbers are numbers, comps are comps, people kind of know what they're doing. Like prices of hobby boxes are have gone up north of, I believe, five fifty now, upwards of six. So, like if you're ripping, you have an idea of what you're looking for, of who you're looking for and what kind of value is of Bowman. ⁓ not necessarily true. one that I bought that you do know about that I felt pretty good with was the ⁓ Ellian Rosario True Gold. ⁓ woke up early in Texas and it was sitting there for 200, buy it now. Which in my head is like, okay, that's like solid. But then Jaba: Yeah. underscore_underscore_: I was following his true blues because I wanted a good card of him. And all the true blue auctions had finished at like 160, 170, 180. You don't see them up for 200 OBO or cheaper than that. So I'm like, ⁓ 200. It's early in the morning, hasn't been sniped yet. Like this feels like a solid one. Like I just went and grabbed that. That was one. ⁓ the seeing if it tracked yet, if it shipped. It says it shipped. Tracking label available, but Jaba: Yeah, and j just to jump in on Elian Rosario, he's one of those rare guys and obviously his base has gone down from day one to today. I think that's likely the case with every single player. Unless there's a guy who started at like four dollars and is seven dollars now, but in the, you know, meaningful category, it's you know, the base and probably the refractors are all gonna go down. But his blues started around one ten, one twenty. And they've kind of shifted up, like you said, to that one sixty, one seventy range. And while I do, you know, firmly kind of hold that belief where true color early on, you know, you're probably gonna pay a little bit of a premium, but you're paying to get, you know, a gradable copy of it. But I mean, you're usually not seeing color go up. I think it goes down way less than bases and refractors will. But underscore_underscore_: Mm-hmm. Jaba: You know, true color usually goes down a little bit and he's kind of the rare case where it's gone up and it's gone up significantly, right? I mean, that's almost like a fifty percent gain and 'cause you had texted me, you were like, ⁓ well, you know, a bunch of underscore_underscore_: It's a big job. Jaba: you know, blues started going at, you know, one twenty, two hundred feels good. And I was kinda like, ⁓ well, you know, go go check out his blues now. You know, you can't find one for under one sixty, one seventy. And that's not like bins at one sixty with best offer. That was like, you know, auctions ending there or, you know, blues at OBO at like two twenty five. So underscore_underscore_: Right. Multiple bids. Huh. Somebody just ⁓ best offered a true blue at eighty dollars. So way to kill the comps there. Jaba: Okay, so this segment's cooked. but Yeah, so I I I think ⁓ long winded way of saying I think that was a ⁓ great buy by you. And I think we rank these by if the other person's jealous. I know I'm jealous of that, so that was a a good ⁓ good buy for you. I think my my kind of best buy here recently I got ⁓ I'm trying to I'm trying to pull it up here. There was an Alimber Santa True Gold that I got for trying underscore_underscore_: Appreciate ya. Jaba: The exact number here just for ⁓ science's sake. ⁓ eighteen dollars and twenty-three cents all in. Now I know what you're saying. I I mean even in our previews, I was saying this guy's probably a reliever. He's a little older, his triple A numbers were horrific. But triple A was a launching pad, he comes up to the majors, and he was really good out of the pen. You know, I'm not saying that this guy's a a world beater. I'm not saying he's like the next Mariano Rivera. But ten games for the Astros, fifteen and a third innings. Only fanned nine, but he gave up two earned runs in that period. The strikeouts were better in the minors, so I think that they're just like a little low in a small sample. But you know, my whole kind of thing was okay, it's a true gold that ships PWE. How often are you going to find that? Not frequently. And it's a guy who's in the major leagues. So, you know, I'm thinking, especially heading into the playoffs where you know the Astros just snuck in at 500. ⁓ you know, if he closes out again. game or something or does anything. I think that's a forty to fifty dollar easy flip. and yeah, I think that was just one where it's like, okay, it's not a sexy option. It's not, you know, gonna make me a billionaire. But, you know, those little wins, I think it's easy to justify when it's a guy in the major leagues, on a playoff team. honestly not sure if he's on the roster. I should probably check that before I make bold proclamations. But ⁓ yeah, you know, that was that another underscore_underscore_: Yep. Okay. Jaba: Another one I had Brendan Jones true blue color match with the Marlins at nineteen ninety nine. Again, I don't think that it was a particularly great deal. I'm sure that that's probably around where they'll wind up trading. But he's a twenty-four year old in triple A. He's right on the precipice. ⁓ seven sixty-two OPS this year, not you know, astounding by any means, but he had forty-eight steals, hit fourteen homers, hits a lot more balls in the air than he does on the ground. You know, it's the profile of a guy who could come up debut and underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Jaba: And, you know, it's one of those where it's like, he's the first guy to homer steal a base and blah blah blah on a Tuesday since, you know, read Jackson in eighteen sixty one. And he's all over Twitter and Instagram and you know, you sell that for fifty, sixty bucks. ⁓ another one where the ceiling's not crazy, but you know, you can see the vision of that really not losing value unless he goes out of baseball. ⁓ so yeah, I'll I'll I'll let you highlight some more exciting ones 'cause those Might be a little boring for people. underscore_underscore_: I was sitting at Starbucks just scrolling in the morning doing my work on the computer and I saw Brandon Clark purple for nineteen ninety-nine buy it now. I'm like, okay. Like, that's what his base autos are doing. So like he's a AFL guy, he's up to 102, 103 from the left side, going into the AFL without much pitching. That kind of felt like even all in at $26.78. That should be a double up, I think, if he does anything like he remotely should in the AFL. Jaba: Yeah. underscore_underscore_: ⁓ bought that Patrick Copen true gold for twenty five dollars with a dollar ship just because you kind of buy buy the org there and like is what it is, right? ⁓ Jaba: Dodger Truple. Yeah. I i if he pitches and doesn't get blown up, you're you're good. underscore_underscore_: Right. And this one says a shipping label was created and tracking number provided, but it hasn't done anything yet. I'd like to see it. ⁓ well you don't know what this is, so shipping label is still created. So we'll wait we'll wait on this one for the next update. We'll surprise ya. Jaba: How many days ago? Is it juicy? underscore_underscore_: Not really. Jaba: I'm gonna do my my failed snipe of the week. Owen Ayers, True Black, popped up. I messaged you ⁓ I think it was late Saturday night. ⁓ true black to ten auto popped up at fifty eight fifty, was pretty clearly meant to be five eighty five. ⁓ bought it, did the you know, little prayer circle hoping it would ship. Did not ship. ⁓ don't really begrudge the seller at all. underscore_underscore_: Yeah. Yeah. Did not I mean you you knew it was happening though too. Like you're like, ⁓ this is getting cancelled and like that you kinda put the timer on like, ⁓ how long will it take? Jaba: Yeah. It Yeah, it was kinda like, you know, shooting free throws in practice where it doesn't count but it felt good to see it get through the net. ⁓ so yeah, that was that was kinda my week. ⁓ I don't know if you had anything else exciting going on or if we can ⁓ leave people there. underscore_underscore_: Can probably leave people there with the signing off note of there still are plenty of deal. There's cards you and I have looked at and been like, ⁓ that like makes sense. Like, but we just didn't pull the trigger on it. Not saying like together, just you or I, neither of us did. ⁓ market is definitely settling quickly. Though it feels like a little more drawn out, 'cause like Angebel still hasn't dipped below a hundred really consistently for a base auto. I'm kind of waiting for that day. Jaba: Yeah. underscore_underscore_: ⁓ Jaba: Yeah, I saw someone say his average was eighty three, but you know, I I you know Yeah, if you can find me one of those I'd ⁓ I'd be all over that. underscore_underscore_: I haven't seen well, they're not on bin then 'cause I don't see anything get posted. I search when I do my search I search only by buy it now so I don't get bogged down. And if you guys do the same or similar, ⁓ just let us know if you're facing the same thing we are now of all the mega boxes cluttering your feed, bum and you football is now cluttering the feed.
