- 0:01Welcome back to Fostering Faith. My name is Tracy
- 0:03and I am going to be your host today for a, I
- 0:07think it's going to be an exciting topic. As
- 0:09I've been walking through Rowan's for the last
- 0:11now several weeks, I hit into First Corinthians
- 0:14over the weekend and I have a verse and it's
- 0:191st Corinthians 1, 27 through 29 in the ESV it
- 0:23says, but God chose what is foolish in the world
- 0:26to shame the wise. God chose what is weak in
- 0:30the world to shame the strong. So that no human
- 0:34being might boast in the presence of God. And
- 0:37so in this episode, we're going to be talking
- 0:39about you don't get to pick who God chooses.
- 0:43what's in your bag. And so, hey everybody, I
- 0:45am Tracy Foster. I am your host for Fostering
- 0:48Faith this episode and we are going to be talking
- 0:51about you don't get to pick who God chooses and
- 0:54what is in your bag. And so let's go ahead and
- 0:56make one thing clear. You don't get to vote on
- 1:01who God calls. You don't get to edit his resume
- 1:05list and you don't get to validate their past
- 1:08or approve their skill set. Why? Because God
- 1:13is sovereign. He chooses the unexpected, the
- 1:17overlooked, the underestimated, and He equips
- 1:20them with whatever is already in their hands
- 1:23or in their bags. And so as we walk through this,
- 1:29Gia is off to another church camp this week down
- 1:32at Access in Tennessee with City Hope Church.
- 1:35And so we know that she is going to come back
- 1:37fully ready and fired up. And she has some already
- 1:40great stories from the last church camp up in
- 1:43C .I .Y. in Michigan to give you guys whenever
- 1:45she gets back. I know that she is full of fire
- 1:47and so excited. What God has in store for her
- 1:51and so as if you are hearing this let's just
- 1:53pray for youth this summer and just pray for
- 1:57revival and clarity and discernment and passion
- 2:00and desire to spread the word and so I I really
- 2:05do feel like God is moving in the youth, especially
- 2:08in our small town and across the nation. You
- 2:11can see that in college campuses and in high
- 2:12schools. And so just take a moment and just pray
- 2:15over the youth in your community, in this nation,
- 2:17in this world, and that God just sets them afire
- 2:22and can use them in such a big way. Because,
- 2:25again, you're never too young to make a difference.
- 2:28And we have to remember that those disciples
- 2:31Are not like old men. They're not like bearded
- 2:34men with canes. I mean they were like in their
- 2:38Teens they were 15 16, you know 20 years old
- 2:41and so we really have to keep in mind that God
- 2:44can use the young they can use the youth and
- 2:47If you are willing he just has to have your yes
- 2:51And so if you're listening to this, you know,
- 2:53have your yes ready for whatever God calls you,
- 2:56which brings us to the story of JL. And so I
- 2:59don't know if I've heard a lot of sermons on
- 3:01JL. My friend Nicole did a sermon. at a woman's
- 3:07conference and was about and it was kind of called
- 3:09what is in your bag and it really reminded me
- 3:12of of jl and so if you'll find her story in judges
- 3:16four and it's a straight -up plot twist that
- 3:18only god could provide um because if you've not
- 3:21read your scripture i mean it literally is the
- 3:24book that has everything in it i mean it has
- 3:27uh seduction it has murder it has um husbands
- 3:31um killing other men it has uh you know just
- 3:36Loves a love story. I mean it just has just wisdom
- 3:40and it literally has everything that you would
- 3:41ever need But if you want to turn to judges for
- 3:44We're gonna go to the Israelite army who was
- 3:48under a prophetess Deborah And I will fun fact
- 3:51it is that Deborah is my mother -in -law's name,
- 3:54but Deborah was the only Woman that was a prophetess
- 3:59and a judge and so They're going against Cessera,
- 4:04a powerful Canaanite commander, and God has already
- 4:07promised a victory, but not through traditional
- 4:10heroes. In fact, in Judges 4 -9, it says that
- 4:13the battle won't end up with the glory for the
- 4:16army's general Barak, but instead, the Lord will
- 4:20deliver Cessera into the hand of a woman. Now
- 4:25enter J .L. Who is she? She's not a warrior.
- 4:30She's not a prophetess. She's not even an Israelite
- 4:34woman in battle gear She is a tent -dwelling
- 4:39wife and What's in her bag and so as? I am a
- 4:46very minimalistic kind of person. I used to have
- 4:49huge bags before Gio was born and I really never
- 4:53really carried anything with him. I just wanted
- 4:55a big purse. Now it's the crossover, but even
- 4:59more that we have tap to pay. I don't even really
- 5:03need a purse. I'm not a lipstick kind of carrying
- 5:06person I'm not gonna give you a band -aid because
- 5:09if it's not like hanging off like spit on it
- 5:12You're gonna be fine. I don't have a ton of stuff
- 5:14you know friends carry huge bags and like have
- 5:18everything in there including a banana and Band
- 5:22-aids and all the medicine and I just I just
- 5:25don't carry that stuff And so after kind of just
- 5:28like, you know, thinking about this podcast,
- 5:30I was like, man, maybe I maybe I need to carry
- 5:32a bigger bag, but I'm just I'm just not going
- 5:35to. And so what is in JL's bag? A hammer and
- 5:39a tent peg. Why? Why would she have this? Because
- 5:43women in her culture were the ones responsible
- 5:45for putting up and taking down tents. She had
- 5:49driven hundreds of pegs and it was her everyday
- 5:52chore. But on this day. God used her everyday
- 5:57skill for kingdom victory Cesar was fleeing the
- 6:01battlefield Coming to JL's tent and why did he
- 6:05choose JL's tent? So there's a backstory on that
- 6:08and it's about her husband having Two faces and
- 6:13being for one team and being for the other team
- 6:15and so he's like, oh let me run into his tent
- 6:17But in that same instance and so she offers him
- 6:21hospitality and so look at that and so she didn't
- 6:24come You know, like, full force, like, I'm gonna
- 6:28kill you. No, she was like, come here. You know,
- 6:31lay down. Covers him up with a blanket, gives
- 6:34him some milk, and then whenever he's sleeping,
- 6:39she drives that tent peg straight through his
- 6:44cranium, straight through his temple. Wait, what?
- 6:49Yeah. That's graph that is in scripture that
- 6:51is in your Bible this is in the book that people
- 6:54are not reading and like all over you know social
- 6:57media is that you know your Bible has dust on
- 7:01it, but yet you have a new iPhone and so hopefully
- 7:03your iPhone has a you version Bible app on there
- 7:05If not, please read it or get the like blueprinted
- 7:08Bible app Any Bible app that is free? Just download
- 7:14it and because these are the stories that are
- 7:16hidden in this love story that God has left us.
- 7:20And so let's be honest. I mean, this message
- 7:22offends our modern Western sensibility. But if
- 7:26you have read through the ancient and near Eastern
- 7:30eyes, God didn't commission under murder. He
- 7:34allowed deliverance through unconventional means.
- 7:37JL wasn't praised because she killed. She was
- 7:41praised because she obeyed and acted. decisively
- 7:44in the moment that God had orchestrated. And
- 7:47so in Judges 5, 24, Deborah sings most blessed
- 7:51of women, B, J, L. She struck Cessera and she
- 7:56crushed his head. And so the Hebrew root word
- 8:01for blessed here is Barak. She also, it is also
- 8:05used for highly favored by God, like Mary and
- 8:10the mother of Jesus. So what does this teach
- 8:13us? God uses What you've done privately and practice
- 8:19privately to bring about his purpose in public
- 8:23his purpose in public Your tent peg moments might
- 8:29just be on their way So what's in your bag? What
- 8:34have you been carrying around that looks ordinary?
- 8:37Maybe it's your job Maybe it's your story your
- 8:42heartbreak, your stubborn consistencies. Maybe
- 8:49it's the way that you care for people when no
- 8:51one else is looking. The way that you talk to
- 8:55teenagers, bake casseroles, or spot someone's
- 8:59loneliness from a mile away. Let me tell you,
- 9:04nothing that you've practiced is wasted in the
- 9:07hands of God. And so, Now that we see how jail
- 9:12was rugged and rural, we have Esther. Esther
- 9:16was royal and refined. But they have this thing
- 9:21in common. Neither of them applied for their
- 9:25calling. God positioned them. Esther was a young
- 9:29Jewish girl taken into the presence King's harem.
- 9:33She wasn't trained in political maneuvering,
- 9:36but she had favor. And that favor, combined with
- 9:40courage, saved a nation. Her cousin, Mordecai,
- 9:45told her, Esther, in Esther 414, and it says,
- 9:49and who knows but that you have come to a royal
- 9:52position for just a time as this. And I spoke
- 9:56on this at a woman's conference called Roar,
- 10:00and I was... given the privilege to do the morning
- 10:03kind of like pep talk to get people excited for
- 10:07the day and what better way to get people excited
- 10:10to know that you have been called for just a
- 10:13time as this and so this phrase such a time as
- 10:17this is Kronos and Kronos is chronological time
- 10:27a tick -tock on the calendar and Kyrios is an
- 10:30appointed time, a divine moment. And so God appointed
- 10:33her Kyrios moment, but he also prepared her for
- 10:38the long before way before that. And so how did
- 10:42he do that? And so you don't get to pick who
- 10:44God chooses, including yourself. But when he
- 10:48chooses you, he will use what's already forming
- 10:52inside of you. JL didn't need a sword. Esser
- 10:57didn't need a title. David didn't need armor.
- 11:01Moses did not need eloquence. And Peter didn't
- 11:05need a clean record. God used what was already
- 11:09in his bag. And so what's in your bag? And so
- 11:15let's list it out. What betrayal have you overcome?
- 11:19That's in your bag. That class that you barely
- 11:22passed but learned resilience from it. It's in
- 11:25there too. The heartache, that addiction that
- 11:29you've broken free from, that thing that you
- 11:32think disqualifies you, it's actually your tent
- 11:37peg. It's a street credit that no one else has
- 11:41but you and so all those things that you've went
- 11:44through, all those fires that had refined you,
- 11:47that's your tent peg. And so this is called redemptive
- 11:52reappropriation. God takes what was meant to
- 11:56harm you and Uses it for his glory. And so as
- 12:01I walk through Romans recently, I was able to
- 12:05do a six -week class through Dallas Seminary
- 12:09on it as well. And so it says think Romans 828
- 12:12God works all things together for good in Hebrew
- 12:16storytelling We have the 10 peg wasn't just a
- 12:20tool. It was a symbol Esther's beauty treatments
- 12:23weren't just a spa days. It was God's backup
- 12:27prep. Your bag isn't just life's leftovers. It's
- 12:33divine arsenal. Then maybe you're thinking, but
- 12:36I'm not JL or Esther. I'm just trying to survive.
- 12:41Perfect. So was Gideon. So was Ruth. And so was
- 12:48Peter when he was fishing all night and catching
- 12:51nothing. Listen, God doesn't call the qualified.
- 12:56He qualifies the called. He's not asking if you're
- 13:01ready. He's asking if you'll say yes. And so
- 13:08how do we do this? Take inventory of your bag.
- 13:12Know what you got. What are your skills? What
- 13:15are your scars? What are your stories that are
- 13:17in there? Pray for discernment. Ask God, where
- 13:24can I drive this tent peg for your kingdom? Where
- 13:28can you use me? And step into your moment like
- 13:34JL, like Esther, like you, like David. Like all
- 13:40those things that you have been practicing in
- 13:42private, all the readings that you've been doing,
- 13:44all the studies that you've been doing, all of
- 13:46the things that, all the mess that you went through,
- 13:49all the addictions, all the bad relationships,
- 13:52all the things that you have learned and Christ
- 13:54has brought you through, those are your moments.
- 13:59Those are the things that God can use if you
- 14:02have a word yes. And so let's end this by You
- 14:10were never meant to compare your calling to someone's
- 14:12else JL didn't have a crown Esther didn't have
- 14:17a hammer and they didn't need each other's weapons
- 14:20They only needed their yes So what's in your
- 14:26bag? hold it up lay it before God and get ready
- 14:32because You're such a time of this maybe closer
- 14:39than you think. And so we hope that this message
- 14:43inspired you. And for Fostering Faith, we want
- 14:46you to share this with a friend who needs to
- 14:48be reminded that their story still matters, that
- 14:51they're called, and to make sure that you subscribe.
- 14:55And don't forget to write something in the comments.
- 15:00You don't get to pick who God chooses, but you
- 15:04get to say yes. When he calls you and we would
- 15:08love to pray for you guys and so dear Heavenly
- 15:10Father Thank you so much for today. Thank you
- 15:12so much for these listeners Thank you that they
- 15:14are going to be searching their bags this week
- 15:16because you have put Something in our bags that
- 15:18only we can use that we are masters at using
- 15:21Thank you that we are going to be used by you
- 15:24because our answer is going to be yes Thank you
- 15:26for our boldness as we step out. Thank you for
- 15:29our calling Thank you that you have made us for
- 15:31just a time as this. Thank you for all that you
- 15:34do for us Jesus name I pray Amen and amen and
- 15:39so until next time keep fostering your faith
- 15:41Even when it doesn't make sense God's not done
- 15:45with your story and have an amazing week guys.
- 15:48We love you
