- 0:31Victoria Weakly.
- 0:32We're talking ups.
- 0:34I see what you got.
- 0:35Videos of your Weakly in the Weakly and the Weakly.
- 0:37What, not, not, not, not...
- 0:39Just get there, I'll be right back.
- 0:41Whoa, they haven't asked.
- 0:44No, the Weakly and the Weakly and my God.
- 0:47It was a fun time.
- 0:49I have blisters.
- 0:50Like my, I've used like a whole packet of band-oats this morning honestly.
- 0:53But that's a sign of a good night.
- 0:56Is the, is the wedding going to be in Woman's Day or will I just say who's it was?
- 1:00No.
- 1:01We're not allowed to say who's it was.
- 1:02No, it's not going to be in.
- 1:03Oh, okay.
- 1:04So, Sam, would we say New Zealand famous?
- 1:06Kind of.
- 1:07One of the most famous sportsmen in New Zealand.
- 1:09Yeah.
- 1:10So we're not allowed to say who's it was, but it was.
- 1:12Very fun.
- 1:13Very, it looked amazing.
- 1:15I also went to a wedding in the Weakly and there was 17 bridesmaids.
- 1:1917.
- 1:21Wow.
- 1:22I know.
- 1:23God, that's a posse.
- 1:26Like when they were walking down the aisle, they had to go in twos.
- 1:29Because there's so many of them.
- 1:30Were there 17 groomsmen?
- 1:31No, there's only four.
- 1:32I don't think I'd even have 17 friends.
- 1:34Neither.
- 1:35Neither.
- 1:36See, hey, I just met you on Saturday night.
- 1:38But do you want to be my brother?
- 1:40No, she was genuinely, really good friends of their own,
- 1:43which I thought was quite amazing.
- 1:45But also, very expensive situation.
- 1:47Surely you would be like, sort your own dresses, sort your own makeup.
- 1:51Which I actually think is, personally, the way to go anyway.
- 1:56No.
- 1:57I think if I was asking you to be my bridesmaids,
- 2:00and then asking you to buy your own dress and shoes,
- 2:02and you know, it's like you're doing me a favor by coming to my event.
- 2:07Therefore, I should pay for that.
- 2:09Yeah, that's my view.
- 2:11Therefore, I will be having zero bridesmaids.
- 2:14Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:15The budget, unfortunately, does not fit.
- 2:17I say that now, and then once I get married, I'm like,
- 2:19no, no, no, you can all buy your own.
- 2:22My best friend asked me to be her bridesmaid, and I cried.
- 2:24I was so happy.
- 2:25Awesome.
- 2:26And then two weeks later, she told me she wasn't having bridesmaids.
- 2:29I was like, so sad.
- 2:31And you turned to the wedding, and there is bridesmaids,
- 2:33and you're like, shit.
- 2:35No, but I had a bit of a mayor at the wedding.
- 2:37What happened?
- 2:39I was, I had a few drinks.
- 2:41Yep, you.
- 2:42And for me, it was margarita.
- 2:44Oh, it was great.
- 2:45Great selection.
- 2:46It was fun.
- 2:47I don't believe I'm going to say this on the phone.
- 2:48I'm like, racking my brain to think what could have...
- 2:50I'm kind of sad.
- 2:51Can I guess?
- 2:52Did you wear your pants?
- 2:57Close?
- 2:58No.
- 2:59Did you do a spontaneous speech?
- 3:02No, that wouldn't be fun.
- 3:04No, I...
- 3:06I saw my phone, and I was...
- 3:08I already loved this.
- 3:10I don't even know.
- 3:11I was kind of seeing someone, and he loves overseas.
- 3:15He was coming back.
- 3:16And I...
- 3:17You seemed to know.
- 3:20No.
- 3:21I mean, that could have been very possible.
- 3:23No.
- 3:24I was in a wedding.
- 3:25I thought I'd go to the toilet again.
- 3:27No, I've seen him a message saying, miss you.
- 3:30Can't wait to see you.
- 3:32And soon after the family, what's happened to you?
- 3:36Hey, that could have been so much worse.
- 3:39I know.
- 3:40But it was a fuck.
- 3:41It was a very big eye.
- 3:42It was like, wow, make sure you know who you're texting.
- 3:45If you said, can't wait to have sex with you.
- 3:48I know.
- 3:49It could have been so.
- 3:50You could have said so.
- 3:51It was sexy.
- 3:52Oh, I know.
- 3:53And I...
- 3:54Did anyone see it?
- 3:55Did anyone see it?
- 3:56Realized straightaway.
- 3:57And deleted it straightaway.
- 3:59And you know how it shows deleted message.
- 4:01But I was like, I don't care.
- 4:03Anyway, and then my mom texted me and goes,
- 4:05Too late!
- 4:06I saw it!
- 4:07It's like...
- 4:08Classic, I think.
- 4:09I know.
- 4:10Anyway, I was just like,
- 4:11Oh, and then it was like going around the party,
- 4:13going around the wedding.
- 4:14Oh, I got back.
- 4:15I heard that you texted me once.
- 4:17Anyway.
- 4:18Anyway.
- 4:19How did you do that?
- 4:20I know.
- 4:21I know.
- 4:22Well, surely it says family WhatsApp in the group.
- 4:23Yeah, it says family.
- 4:24Yep.
- 4:25But they both hit the top of WhatsApp anyways.
- 4:26They had a few drinks.
- 4:27They had a few drinks.
- 4:28You know, so...
- 4:29Yes.
- 4:30So...
- 4:31So...
- 4:32That was...
- 4:33It sold me up pretty quickly.
- 4:35Oh.
- 4:36Stock, stock, stock.
- 4:37Yeah.
- 4:38The ESMP 500 is up 1.3%.
- 4:41And the NASDAQ was up 1.5%.
- 4:44But for February, so we've just finished the month...
- 4:46We've finished the month last week.
- 4:48And the stock market, the US stock market,
- 4:50so the ESMP 500 was down 3%.
- 4:52So we had a really good January,
- 4:54not so good February.
- 4:56But that is the nature of investing.
- 4:59Yes.
- 5:00And the Aussie market was pretty much flat.
- 5:02So it was New Zealand.
- 5:03So, yeah, pretty ho-hum.
- 5:05But in the US, we've been talking about
- 5:08how companies have been reporting over the last month.
- 5:11So I guess, kind of, it's really good to look at, you know,
- 5:14what do those companies that collectively
- 5:16mean for the economy for the stock market?
- 5:18And so...
- 5:19Oh, I like this.
- 5:20Overall, pretty underwhelming.
- 5:22Like a lot of companies missing expectations,
- 5:24which isn't good.
- 5:25So that means that, you know, analysts in the market
- 5:27are thinking it's going to be really good.
- 5:29And they come in, you know, slightly below.
- 5:31Yeah.
- 5:32So we had some pretty disappointing results.
- 5:35Like, if you think, remember, Apple
- 5:37was one, Alphabet.
- 5:38So Google was another.
- 5:40And...
- 5:41But we also had some really good ones.
- 5:43So we had a lot of the energy companies, which, you know...
- 5:46Like a clean energy.
- 5:47Or like dirty energy.
- 5:49Or gross.
- 5:50And that's because of the oil price doing well.
- 5:54You're right there.
- 5:55Yeah, I'm just putting some cute clips
- 5:57and then I got a very beautiful thing.
- 5:59Sorry.
- 6:00How cute are they though?
- 6:03Really cute.
- 6:04Sorry.
- 6:06That's a story of a life.
- 6:08So this is like that, right?
- 6:11But yes.
- 6:12So if we looked at all the companies...
- 6:15So if we look at all the companies as a whole,
- 6:20then corporate profits or corporate earnings in the US
- 6:24are expected to fall about 5% this year.
- 6:26So that's not that good.
- 6:28It's also not that bad.
- 6:29No, it's not that bad.
- 6:30No.
- 6:31But this is the first time that earnings are expected to decline
- 6:35since 2020, and that's when we had COVID.
- 6:37So we've had a really, really strong rebound since COVID
- 6:40and now things are starting to kind of go...
- 6:43Yeah, yeah.
- 6:44It's coming back on that theme of energy companies doing really well.
- 6:47It's kind of one of something I wanted to touch on
- 6:49was just around the oil price.
- 6:51So we always talk about stocks.
- 6:52But, you know, there are commodities like oil,
- 6:55which are really, really important as well.
- 6:57And we've all come out of COVID and lockdowns and everything.
- 7:01Well, most of the world has, but China has kind of been a little bit...
- 7:04Has kind of been a lagger and...
- 7:06Are they still in lockdown?
- 7:07So they're coming out of lockdown now.
- 7:08So over the last couple of months,
- 7:10they've been coming out of lockdown.
- 7:12So they've been in lockdown for three years,
- 7:14and in China, it's strict lockdown.
- 7:16Like, very, very strict stuff.
- 7:18They must have been some serious climbs in mental health
- 7:22as you and me, and...
- 7:24Like, that is just so full of.
- 7:26Yeah.
- 7:27And they...
- 7:28I felt four or five months was bad enough.
- 7:30Can you imagine three years?
- 7:32And, you know, the children, they haven't been to school.
- 7:34And like, all that, like, it would just be...
- 7:36Yeah, it's going to be quite interesting and scary
- 7:39as to what the repercussions of that will be.
- 7:42But, one of the repercussions of them now reopening
- 7:45is that they're now driving cars,
- 7:48they're now flying, they're traveling.
- 7:50And so that all means they're demanding a lot of oil.
- 7:54And being one of the biggest...
- 7:56They're the second largest consumer of oil, I know.
- 7:59And the US is the first.
- 8:01I want you to guess how many barrels a day
- 8:04do you reckon the US consumes of oil?
- 8:07How much isn't a barrel, like vaguely?
- 8:10Ah, okay, right.
- 8:12So scientific.
- 8:14Thank you.
- 8:15Just be a hugging the ear.
- 8:16Like, oh, about this.
- 8:18Um...
- 8:19No.
- 8:20I don't know, like 100...
- 8:21100,000?
- 8:2419 million barrels a day.
- 8:2819 million a day?
- 8:30I know.
- 8:31Oh, wow.
- 8:32There's so much.
- 8:33Wow, how are we even...
- 8:35How is the world even sustained?
- 8:36In China's like 15 million a day.
- 8:38Ah, really?
- 8:39I mean, how much the whole world consumes a day?
- 8:41Yeah.
- 8:42Shit, that's a lot.
- 8:43But, that's like crazy.
- 8:45And so, when you've got China coming back online
- 8:47and wanting an increasing demand for oil,
- 8:49then that leads to, you know, an increasing demand.
- 8:53But we've also had the shortage of supply
- 8:55because, you know, when people weren't flying during COVID,
- 8:58a lot of those oil production companies shut down production,
- 9:01because they were like, well, there's no one to sell it to,
- 9:04so let's cut production.
- 9:05And that doesn't just come back online quickly, you know.
- 9:08If you're thinking you're drilling, finding oil,
- 9:10you've got to take time.
- 9:11So, we've got this limited supply,
- 9:13heaps of demand,
- 9:14and that's just going to lead to global oil prices going bananas.
- 9:18So, is this where a lot of short term investors
- 9:22would look to invest in oil companies?
- 9:25Yeah.
- 9:26And that's why the energy companies did super, super well
- 9:29when they reported their results this month.
- 9:31So, they, you know, if you remember Chevron, BP,
- 9:34like they're all making, you know, record, record profits.
- 9:37And it's because of these,
- 9:39this really high oil price.
- 9:41And we also spoke about in the curve weekly,
- 9:43BP had a target to cut their carbon emissions by 40% by 2030.
- 9:49And they've now changed that to a 25% reduction.
- 9:53So, they've...
- 9:54Yeah.
- 9:55And it's all because of this.
- 9:56They're like, well, we've got to keep producing oil
- 9:58because the world needs it.
- 9:59And it's like, come on guys, like, yeah.
- 10:02What would they do, though?
- 10:03What is the alternative?
- 10:04Renewables.
- 10:05Yeah.
- 10:06Or you can buy off-sets so you can buy carbon credits.
- 10:10So, they should be doing that.
- 10:11They should be doing it.
- 10:12I think the...
- 10:13Well, carbon...
- 10:14My opinion is carbon credits are kind of not a cheating way,
- 10:17but it's kind of...
- 10:18It's an easy way.
- 10:19You're just buying the ability to produce more carbon emissions, really.
- 10:23Whereas what you should be doing is looking at your business
- 10:25and being like, hey, how can we actually reduce our emissions
- 10:29overall, not just be like three minus three equals zero?
- 10:34It's like, how do we reduce the three?
- 10:35Do you know what I mean?
- 10:36Yeah.
- 10:37Yeah.
- 10:38But this all leads to inflation.
- 10:41You've got high oil prices.
- 10:44You've got high petrol prices.
- 10:45It's all leads to inflation.
- 10:46So, yay!
- 10:48Oh, shit.
- 10:50Shit.
- 10:51So, that inflation of 67%.
- 10:54Is that what New Zealand's currently at?
- 10:56New Zealand is...
- 10:58New Zealand, the US.
- 10:59Yeah, they're all around 67%, which is great fun.
- 11:02So, do we think that that's going to get higher again now that...
- 11:05Well, it's just people were saying, oh, look, this is just, you know, a transition.
- 11:09And inflation, well, we just bet there's levels because of COVID.
- 11:11It's all going to come back.
- 11:13Sorry, back.
- 11:14Because we're going to come back to more normal levels of that two to three percent.
- 11:17But when you have things like this saying, oil's going back up to over $100 and it's at, you know, $70, $80 now,
- 11:25that just is all like, oh, so we're not going to see inflation come back for a while.
- 11:30You know, it's all these extra things keep happening, which makes it feel like inflation is going to stay higher for longer.
- 11:37Well, no, I think I need to pay rise.
- 11:39Yeah.
- 11:40Shit, that's so...
- 11:44That sucks.
- 11:45Yeah.
- 11:46I think the reason it's the most deflating is it feels as though all of the things that are doing harm to the world or people.
- 11:53So, whether it be layoffs or...
- 11:55Like, when people are being laid off and losing their job, it's good for inflation.
- 11:59Yeah.
- 12:00And then when oil prices are high, which is shit for the planet, it's also bad for inflation.
- 12:04Like, it just feels like we're getting smacked on the face with an older fish.
- 12:08Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:09We're trying to...
- 12:10You know, it's just like, you know, you will look one way and there's a slap.
- 12:13You look the other and there's a slap.
- 12:15You're like, I just want to get away from the fish.
- 12:18Yeah.
- 12:19Just take your smelly fish somewhere else.
- 12:20Yeah.
- 12:21Yeah.
- 12:22One day.
- 12:23Optimism.
- 12:24And we just start faking the curfew.
- 12:25Click and you just bring some on positive news.
- 12:27Break some joys.
- 12:28Yeah.
- 12:29Is there any positive news?
- 12:30Oh!
- 12:31I will try and find more positive news in the next time.
- 12:35No, it's not that I want you to fake it.
- 12:37I'm more just like, on its depressing, isn't it?
- 12:39Yeah.
- 12:40Well, inflation is real and it's whatever it feels.
- 12:44So, it's good to kind of talk about, you know, the mechanics behind it.
- 12:47And, you know, understand that.
- 12:48Rather people are sitting there going, why is it not going down?
- 12:50Why is it not going down?
- 12:51It's like, we all these other kind of things in play that are leading to it staying high, unfortunately.
- 12:57And we also had Starbucks last week.
- 12:59So, Starbucks employees about nearly 300,000 people in the US, like...
- 13:05Just in America.
- 13:06Yeah, just in America.
- 13:08And they had a new CEO start in April last year.
- 13:11And we've actually sent this with quite a few companies now
- 13:14that they're putting rules in place that you have to be in the office three times a week, for example,
- 13:19to try and reverse this working from home stuff.
- 13:22And Amazon did it.
- 13:24And now Starbucks has come out and said that they want their stuff to be back in.
- 13:28And this is sorry, this is their head office stuff.
- 13:30Oh, okay.
- 13:31Yeah, yeah.
- 13:32How do I make coffee?
- 13:33I love the usual day.
- 13:34Yeah, yeah.
- 13:36Oh, I was the same whenever I read the headline.
- 13:38I was like, what?
- 13:39Yeah.
- 13:40But anyway, so they were saying there's nothing in the back in the office three days a week.
- 13:45And there's kind of been a bit of a backlash.
- 13:47People saying, no, we think we should be able to work when we want.
- 13:51And it's interesting, because I think we're going to see a lot more of this.
- 13:56Companies saying, you know, for productivity and creativity.
- 13:59And we sort with Disney as well.
- 14:01You know, it's better to have people back in the office together working together.
- 14:04And then a lot of people are saying, well, no, I like the flexibility.
- 14:08I work better from home.
- 14:09And so it's really interesting to see where we land.
- 14:11Whether it is three days a week or whether it's not.
- 14:14But just as a general.
- 14:16Yeah, just as a, like when we were talking the other day,
- 14:19it was like, why is the five day working week and five day working week?
- 14:22You know, why is it five days work two days off?
- 14:25I know.
- 14:26Like who decided that?
- 14:27And in your email, the Curve Weekly last week,
- 14:30or maybe it was the week before, one of the things you spoke about was that trial they did in London
- 14:34around companies trying a four day working week and three day weekend
- 14:39and the productivity and the what staff were putting out was exactly the same.
- 14:44And I mean,
- 14:45I do do a lot of, like, super interesting around.
- 14:48And this is quite a big thing, because culture at offices and at companies can permeate, you know,
- 14:56into other parts of the business.
- 14:58So if you've got a bad culture, Starbucks share prices up 4% yet today.
- 15:02And the market's up 6%.
- 15:04So it's actually underperformed.
- 15:05Right.
- 15:06Can I just say for anyone that doesn't understand that, basically,
- 15:09the entire stock market.
- 15:11And we're talking about SMB standards.
- 15:13Yeah.
- 15:14The American Stock Exchange with the main one is up, like as a year is up 6%.
- 15:19So any company that's up less than that is technically down.
- 15:23Well, it's under here.
- 15:24It's underperforming because it should be, that's the kind of the average.
- 15:27I guess it's performing below average.
- 15:29So something's happened or something's not right.
- 15:32And so that's what this is saying.
- 15:34People are like, oh, is this going to create a lot of, you know, cultural issues
- 15:37or people going to leave or is this going to be even just a distraction,
- 15:41you know, in terms of people just not giving on with their work
- 15:44because they're, you know, fighting on this and, yeah, just kind of disgruntled.
- 15:49Yeah.
- 15:50We will see.
- 15:51And I would just like to make a metaphorical toast.
- 15:55I don't have anything, not even a glass of water.
- 15:58But Tavik is now officially going to be full time in the curve.
- 16:02With you.
- 16:03So if you know on that, God, that's a terrible sounding clapper.
- 16:07Sounds like it.
- 16:08Sex.
- 16:09Yeah.
- 16:10Sorry.
- 16:11But congratulations.
- 16:12Very exciting.
- 16:13Good morning.
- 16:14Sorry.
- 16:15Oh my God.
- 16:16Sorry.
- 16:17Okay.
- 16:18How was your weekend?
- 16:19Real boring.
- 16:20Like as in nothing to meet nothing to report.
- 16:23Sorry.
- 16:24I saw someone.
