- 0:00Vox Liturgica: The propers of the day according to the Roman Missal before 1955. The thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost, August 23 in the year of our Lord 2026.
- 0:22Of this Sunday, Dom Gaspar Lefevre writes the following. The collect which prays for an increase of faith, hope, and charity, re echoes the teaching of the Apostle in the Epistle and that of the Master in the Gospel. The Jews wanted to impose the Mosaic Law on Christians.
- 0:47Saint Paul shows that it is not the law which gives holiness to souls since before the law Abraham, father of the Jewish people was sanctified by his faith in Jesus. All those therefore Jews or Pagans who enter into the church and put their faith in the merits of the Passion of Christ will be saved. Our divine Savior indeed heals all the lepers Jews or Samaritans who have recourse to him. Arise, said Jesus to the latter. Thy faith hath made thee whole.
- 1:35It is he who through his church gives back health to the souls of those whether Jews or Gentiles who come to him. By faith we put in Jesus all our hope as we say in the offertory for he is our refuge as we proclaim in the Alleluia verse and in the collect and the post communion we ask for the virtue of charity which makes us love the divine law and makes us practice it. We honor on this day a saint to whom the Blessed Virgin appeared to announce to him that he was to enter the order of Servites whose object is to honor the sorrows through which she attained the glory we have rejoiced in during the past eight days. Born at Florence of the illustrious family of Benizzi, Saint Philip gave signs from the cradle of his future holiness. The Order of the Servants of the Virgin Mary called Servites had been instituted fifteen years before.
- 2:50The little convent was not far from the town. There, while hearing mass on the Thursday in Easter week, Saint Philip was struck by the words of the epistle addressed by the Holy Ghost to Philip the deacon. As he bore that name, he applied to himself the scriptural text and feeling himself invited by the Holy Ghost to enter that order, he left everything to purchase the imperishable treasure of heaven. Entering as a lay brother he was later on ordained a priest and became general of the Servites. The Cardinals assembled at Viterbo wished to elect him Pope but out of humility he refused the honor and hid himself in the mountains.
- 3:49There he flourished like the palm tree and grew like the cedar of Libanus. God then called him to evangelize Italy, France, and Germany. On his return he was confirmed in his office for life. He tried to calm the animosity which existed between the Guelphs, partisans of the Pope, and the Ghibellines, partisans of the Emperor, and ran serious danger to which the epistle alludes. He was seized by a burning fever on Assumption Day and died at Todi in the year of our Lord 1285 on the day of the octave contemplating the image of the Savior stretched on the cross.
- 4:43Let us ask God to grant us the humility of Saint Philip that despising as he did the riches of the world we may always seek the riches of heaven. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost. Amen. Introit. Bethink thee, Lord, of thy covenant.
- 5:16Wilt thou leave us quite forgotten, souls unbefriended but for thee? Bestir thyself, O Lord, to vindicate thy own cause, and do not neglect the plea of thy suppliants. O God, why hast thou altogether abandoned us? Sheep of thy own pasturing, must we feel the fires of thy vengeance? Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be, through all ages of ages.
- 6:00Bethink thee, Lord, of thy covenant. Wilt thou leave us quite forgotten, souls unbefriended but for thee? Bestir thyself, O Lord, to vindicate thy own cause, and do not neglect the plea of thy suppliants. The Collect, let us pray. Almighty everlasting God, grant us increase of faith, hope, and charity, and fit us to obtain what thou dost promise by making us love what thou commandest.
- 6:44A commemoration of Saint Philip Benizzi. O God, who through blessed Philip thy confessor hast afforded us a distinguished example of humility grant unto thy servants to despise after his example the prosperity of the world, and ever to seek after heavenly things through our Lord Jesus Christ thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. A lesson from the letter of Saint Paul the Apostle to the Galatians. Brethren, the promises you know of were made to Abraham and his offspring.
- 7:39It does not, by the way, say to thy descendants as if it meant a number of people. It says to thy offspring in the singular, meaning Christ. And this is my contention. The law coming into being four hundred and thirty years afterwards cannot unmake the disposition which God made so long ago and cancel the promise. If our inheritance depends on observing the law then it is not the inheritance secured to us by promise.
- 8:19That was promised to Abraham as a free gift. What then is the purpose of the law? It was brought in to make room for transgression while we waited for the coming of that posterity to whom the promise had been made. Its terms were dictated by angels acting through a spokesman. A spokesman represents more than one, and there's only one God.
- 8:51Is the law an infringement then of God's promises? That is not to be thought of. Doubtless, if a law had been given that was capable of imparting life to us, it would have been for the law to bring us justification. But, in fact, scripture represents us as all under the bondage of sin. It was faith in Jesus Christ that was to impart the promised blessing to all those who believe in him.
- 9:28The gradual, bethink thee, Lord, of thy covenant, wilt thou leave us quite forgotten, souls unbefriended but for thee. Bestir thyself, Lord, to vindicate thy own cause. Do not forget the taunts hurled at thy servants. Alleluia. Alleluia.
- 9:54Lord, thou has been our refuge from generation unto generation. Alleluia. A continuation of the Holy Gospel according to Luke. At this time Jesus was on his way to Jerusalem and was passing between Samaria and Galilee and as he was going into a village 10 men that were lepers came towards him. They stood far off crying aloud.
- 10:33Jesus, master, have pity on us. He met them with the words, go and show yourselves to the priests. And thereupon as they went they were made clean. One of them finding that he was cured came back praising God aloud and threw himself at Jesus' feet with his face to the ground to thank him. And this was a Samaritan.
- 11:10Jesus answered, Were not all 10 made clean and the other nine where are they? Not one has come back to give God the praise except this stranger. And he said to him, arise and go on thy way. Thy faith has brought thee recovery. The offertory.
- 11:41Lord, my trust in thee is not shaken. Still I cry, thou art my God. My fate is in thy hands. The secret. Look favorably, Lord, upon thy people and upon thy people's gifts.
- 12:04Let this offering move thy compassion, persuading thee to grant us pardon and an answer to our prayers. A commemoration of Saint Philip Benizzi. Grant us, we beseech thee Almighty God, that the offering of our humility may be pleasing to Thee in honor of Thee Saints and purify us alike in body and soul through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. The Preface of the Most Holy Trinity.
- 12:55Just it is and fitting, right and for our salvation, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks unto thee, O Holy Lord, Father Almighty, everlasting God, who together with thine only begotten Son and the Holy Ghost art one God, one Lord, not in the oneness of a single person, but in the trinity of one substance. For what we believe by thy revelation of thy glory, the same do we believe of thy son, the same of the Holy Ghost without difference or separation so that in confessing the true and eternal Godhead distinction in persons, unity in essence, and equality in majesty may be adored in praise of which the angels and archangels, the cherubim also and Seraphim day by day exalt without end with one voice saying, holy, holy, holy, Lord God of hosts. The heavens and the earth are full of thy glory. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
- 14:23Hosanna in the highest. The communion. Lord, thou hast given us bread from heaven, all contentment, all sweetness to the taste. The post communion. Let us pray.
- 14:47We who have partaken of the heavenly sacrament pray Lord that we may draw ever nearer to our eternal ransom. A commemoration of Saint Philip Benizzi. We beseech the Almighty God that we who have received heavenly food may through the intercession of blessed Philip, thy confessor, be protected by it from all harm, through our Lord Jesus Christ, thy son, who liveth and reigneth with thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God through all ages of ages. Amen. In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy ghost.
- 15:41Amen. Thanks be to God. Saint Philip Benizzi, pray for us.
