- 0:33SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much for having me.
- 0:34SPEAKER_02: I'm very excited.
- 0:36SPEAKER_01: How are you today?
- 0:38SPEAKER_02: I'm fine.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: You know.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: Every day is a beautiful new hellscape, but all in all, it's okay.
- 0:45SPEAKER_02: How are you doing?
- 0:47SPEAKER_01: I'm also fine.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Again, like like you say, every day is a beautiful new hellscape.
- 0:53SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 0:54SPEAKER_02: Could be worse, could be better, you know.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: But you're you're at the start of your day.
- 0:59SPEAKER_01: I'm at the end of my day.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's true.
- 1:02SPEAKER_02: That's very true.
- 1:03SPEAKER_02: I keep forgetting how much I lived in New York for so long that still in my mind I'm like, oh, we're only a couple hours apart.
- 1:09SPEAKER_02: But yeah, now I am in LA.
- 1:10SPEAKER_02: So I'm at the start of my day.
- 1:12SPEAKER_02: I gotta go.
- 1:13SPEAKER_02: I just had a smoothie.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: I moved to LA in the summer of 2019.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: Oh, so it's recent.
- 1:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I was in LA for like six months before quarantine started approximately.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: Um so yeah, pretty recent.
- 1:30SPEAKER_02: And I was in New York for like nine years.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: So I was in New York for a while, but I just couldn't do it anymore.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: Oh no, I would have just missed you there.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: Like six months.
- 1:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I had just left, but I just couldn't, I couldn't do it anymore.
- 1:48SPEAKER_02: I had to go.
- 1:50SPEAKER_02: I had to go.
- 1:52SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's a shame.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: But I I I miss New York.
- 1:56SPEAKER_02: It's it's nice, it's an incredible place to visit.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: I'll say that.
- 2:00SPEAKER_02: It's a great place to visit.
- 2:03SPEAKER_02: Um, but as someone who um was not rich, it was just, you know, tiresome.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: I didn't I lived in a five-floor walk-up in deep Brooklyn that I was paying a lot of money for with a roommate, didn't even have laundry in the building.
- 2:22SPEAKER_01: You know, like that blows my mind about America, like most of most of America not having laundry in the building.
- 2:28SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 2:29SPEAKER_02: I mean, especially in New York.
- 2:30SPEAKER_02: It's so interesting.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: You mean like, you know, no air conditioning, which I grew up, I'm originally from New Orleans, and then I grew up in Florida.
- 2:39SPEAKER_02: So I'm used to it being hot, but I grew up in a very prominent air conditioning culture, which I feel I feel great shame about because it's not good for the environment, but I am used to being, you know, ice cold every moment of every day.
- 2:52SPEAKER_02: And in New York, that just wasn't an option.
- 2:56SPEAKER_02: But I I love LA.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: It's great.
- 2:57SPEAKER_02: My parents live out here now, so it's nice to be closer to closer to family, and then also like all my friends moved out here just kind of one by one, and I was thinking about it, and they just kept making their way, and then I was like, Well, it's a lot of people suddenly like just suddenly decided they were gonna move to LA, like right in the last couple of years, isn't it?
- 3:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's what I noticed.
- 3:19SPEAKER_02: I feel like every few years there's like a huge influx of people, and then there will be like two years where that not that many people move, and then a big influx of people because I had been planning, I mean, I went to college in New York, and every year after college, I was like, I'm gonna move to LA next year.
- 3:34SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna move to LA next year.
- 3:36SPEAKER_02: But then, you know, I started touring with UCB, and then I started teaching at NYU, and I was like, Oh, okay, I'll stay, I'll stay, I'll stay.
- 3:43SPEAKER_02: But then it just got where things were kind of like stale, and I had gone through a big breakup, and then my best friend got a job in LA, so she moved out to LA, and I was like, everything feels like it's finally kind of like pointing in that direction to go to LA.
- 3:59SPEAKER_02: Like, now's the time.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: So I did, and it's been great.
- 4:04SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 4:05SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, it's awesome, it's really nice, which I love.
- 4:10SPEAKER_02: Well, for the first six months and then yeah, honestly, but even in quarantine, it's like been a space.
- 4:18SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like I have a lot more space here.
- 4:21SPEAKER_02: I have a dog, I live across the street from a park.
- 4:26SPEAKER_02: Um, it feels nice, and it also feels nice to be able to, um, I'm obviously not quarantined with my family, so I don't get near them, but my mom is a COVID nurse and my dad is high risk, so they they live separately um right now, but I and have been since the beginning of COVID because my dad has really bad asthma, but I've been able to, you know, like go to the grocery store for them and drop stuff off.
- 4:50SPEAKER_02: And like over the holidays, I made a big like multi-course meal that I like individually packaged and then delivered to them and stuff like that.
- 4:59SPEAKER_02: So it feels nice to be able to like help out them a little bit because they're nice.
- 5:03SPEAKER_02: I like them.
- 5:04SPEAKER_02: They've done you know done a lot for me.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: They're nice.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: It's nice to you know feel like yeah, yeah, I can contribute in some way.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:13SPEAKER_01: And that's the other thing, though.
- 5:14SPEAKER_01: You're a big foodie as well, aren't you?
- 5:16SPEAKER_02: I am, yeah.
- 5:17SPEAKER_02: I really um I really love food and eating.
- 5:21SPEAKER_02: I would say it's my biggest, my biggest passion, my biggest interest.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: I love cooking.
- 5:26SPEAKER_02: Um, I have a lot of strong food opinions.
- 5:31SPEAKER_01: Well, that's the the first thing that I found.
- 5:33SPEAKER_01: Well, the first instance I've like found of you is is through uh your obviously through your podcast, your like show.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 5:41SPEAKER_01: I don't know what you call it.
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: What do you call it even?
- 5:42SPEAKER_01: Is it a podcast?
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Is it a show?
- 5:44SPEAKER_02: Well, we use too many words to describe it.
- 5:46SPEAKER_02: We refer to it as a live stream YouTube talk show, is what we call it.
- 5:54SPEAKER_02: But it is a podcast, like in so many words of it.
- 5:59SPEAKER_01: Do you place it anywhere else other than YouTube, or is it just all through YouTube?
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: Oh, we don't because we're lazy, but we are moving towards potentially doing it somewhere else, hopefully, for this new season coming up.
- 6:14SPEAKER_02: Um, after what we're currently working on, we have some fun things in the works.
- 6:19SPEAKER_01: So I'm excited because I really enjoy it as well.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much.
- 6:23SPEAKER_02: I appreciate it.
- 6:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's called Talk Chef, and it's just Reka Shankar and I watching all of Top Chef and talking about it because that's what we were already doing, and um yeah, it's been cool.
- 6:38SPEAKER_02: We've it really has been the best because we've gotten to meet a lot of Top Chef contestants, yeah.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: Um, which feels cool for me and Reka, because now I'm like the other day I like posted a comedy video on my Instagram, and season two winner Elon Hall was like, This is so funny.
- 6:52SPEAKER_02: I was like, okay, we're friends now.
- 6:54SPEAKER_02: This man is my friend.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm now at the point where so the first two seasons are on Netflix uh for us in the UK.
- 7:03SPEAKER_01: The rest of them are not.
- 7:04SPEAKER_01: So I'm at now, I'm now at the point where I'm like, I don't know what's going on.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: You're watching blind.
- 7:08SPEAKER_02: Do you do y'all not have Hulu?
- 7:10SPEAKER_01: No, we don't have Hulu.
- 7:13SPEAKER_00: Wow.
- 7:14SPEAKER_02: That's so I I forget about that.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: We don't have HBO Max, we don't have Hulu, we don't have um what's the other ones?
- 7:23SPEAKER_01: No, those are the big ones that we don't have.
- 7:25SPEAKER_02: What are y'all watching over there?
- 7:27SPEAKER_01: We have Netflix and Amazon and Disney Plus.
- 7:30SPEAKER_02: So like the Oh Disney Plus, okay.
- 7:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 7:34SPEAKER_02: That's so sad.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: So a lot of stuff does go to those, but like occasionally we'll get like big things that don't go to them.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: Like we don't have um I was saying to this uh to Reker the other day, actually, we don't have um we don't have uh what is it, Frasier or Cheers anymore.
- 7:49SPEAKER_02: That must have been hard for Reka to hear.
- 7:51SPEAKER_02: She loves Frasier.
- 7:53SPEAKER_02: Um That's sad.
- 7:54SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I grew up watching a lot of Cheers.
- 7:56SPEAKER_02: That is Yeah, that's so weird.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: And so I guess you don't get any of the big HBO mini-series.
- 8:01SPEAKER_01: You don't get we talk we kind of do.
- 8:04SPEAKER_01: So but we have Sky over here, which is like our cable network, and like we get we get stuff put on there, so we can we can get like box sets off of there occasionally, but okay, okay, okay.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: Wow, that's owned by the both owned by Rupert Murdoch, so whatever he owns, then yeah.
- 8:18SPEAKER_02: Incredible.
- 8:19SPEAKER_02: What's not owned by Rupert Murdoch?
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 8:22SPEAKER_02: An incredible man.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: Um transitioning.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: This might not be owned by Rupert Murdoch, this movie.
- 8:30SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: Batman and Robin.
- 8:34SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 8:36SPEAKER_02: I did.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: I did.
- 8:37SPEAKER_02: I love this movie.
- 8:39SPEAKER_02: And everyone who doesn't love this movie is wrong.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's 99% of people, I'd say.
- 8:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well including George Clooney.
- 8:48SPEAKER_02: George Clooney doesn't know what's what.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: Listen, rich people live on a different planet than we do, and I'm not interested in their opinions.
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: I'll say it.
- 8:59SPEAKER_02: I'm not interested in what they think.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: I don't need to hear what George Clooney thinks.
- 9:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:03SPEAKER_01: What's your history with this movie then?
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: Like you you kind of like said something to me in an email that I'm interested to hear about late later, so Okay.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: Um I want to hear about that later, but yeah.
- 9:14SPEAKER_02: Oh no, well, okay, well, if I bring it up now, or I can't pump the brakes up.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, you can bring it up now if it if it's like if it fits into your fits into your history of it.
- 9:24SPEAKER_02: Yes, I mean the biggest part of this movie for me is that this movie as a child did make me deeply, deeply horny.
- 9:30SPEAKER_02: And um that I I mean that is my biggest connection to this movie because so I okay, this is a little history about me.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: My mom is six feet tall.
- 9:41SPEAKER_02: I am five, I'm five eight, which is I guess like not that tall for women in general, but I hit probably five seven, maybe in like the first or second grade.
- 9:54SPEAKER_02: What?
- 9:56SPEAKER_02: So I was huge.
- 9:58SPEAKER_02: I was huge, like Hodor from Game of Thrones compared to all the other children, and I was bigger than most of my teachers and like the people that worked at the school.
- 10:09SPEAKER_02: Like it was scary, it wasn't good.
- 10:10SPEAKER_02: I was kind of like a Godzilla-esque figure in my elementary school.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: And then you just stopped growing.
- 10:16SPEAKER_02: And then I just kind of stopped.
- 10:17SPEAKER_02: I just I mean, I grew a little bit over time, but I like really shot up.
- 10:21SPEAKER_02: And I was always I was the tallest person.
- 10:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, pretty much until like fifth or sixth grade when other people started getting taller, but I had a crazy gross spurt and I was like a lot bigger than everyone else.
- 10:32SPEAKER_02: So I identify as being psychotically tall.
- 10:37SPEAKER_02: Like in my mind, when I see a WMBA player, I'm like, you and me both, girlfriend.
- 10:44SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm like, you and I are both six foot seven.
- 10:47SPEAKER_02: I am not now.
- 10:48SPEAKER_02: I stopped growing, so I am not that tall.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: I mean, people are like, oh yeah, I guess you're tall, but it's not wild.
- 10:54SPEAKER_02: Tell me, it's like not that tall.
- 10:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's like it's like taller than average, but you wouldn't look at me and be like, damn, like I, you know, you wouldn't really notice it.
- 11:05SPEAKER_02: And I have such bad posture that a lot of people don't even realize I'm 5'8.
- 11:09SPEAKER_02: So anyway, I was huge and my mom was really tall.
- 11:13SPEAKER_02: And I felt like I had never really seen another woman be tall.
- 11:21SPEAKER_02: And I saw Uma Thurman, and I was like, that woman is a giant.
- 11:27SPEAKER_02: And I was like, mom, is that woman as tall as she appears to be in this movie?
- 11:35SPEAKER_02: My mom was like, Yes, Uma Thurman is very tall.
- 11:37SPEAKER_02: I think Uma Thurman is taller than me.
- 11:40SPEAKER_02: And I was like, wow, I'm obsessed with that.
- 11:44SPEAKER_02: So I loved that.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: I loved that she was tall, and she's so hot in this movie.
- 11:52SPEAKER_02: She is so sexy in this movie.
- 11:54SPEAKER_02: This movie is so erotic.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: Everything from the lighting to the costuming, I think this movie is kind of like iconically homoerotic for a lot of people in terms of Batman and Robin.
- 12:08SPEAKER_02: But I also think this movie feels kind of lesbianic to me as well.
- 12:15SPEAKER_02: But I that's also me projecting a lot of my own, a lot of my own stuff onto it.
- 12:19SPEAKER_02: But I see it.
- 12:20SPEAKER_02: I see it.
- 12:22SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think she was just like so, so, so sexy.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: And the movie was very fun.
- 12:28SPEAKER_02: Um, I like I I I I would say in movies in general, I place funness uh quite high in my enjoyment of a movie.
- 12:40SPEAKER_02: And I find movies that, you know, I I don't think this is a necessarily a hot take, especially anymore.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: But like I most of my favorite movies are very camp.
- 12:52SPEAKER_02: I like a lot of cult classics.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: I'm like a big John Waters fan.
- 12:56SPEAKER_02: I like a lot of early Tim Burton.
- 12:58SPEAKER_02: I like high stylized kind of things, and things like Revolutionary Road don't do a lot for me.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: You know, like a Oh, I thought you were gonna say Revolutionary Road is a is a movie that's a good thing.
- 13:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, a high classic.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: No, no, no, absolutely not, absolutely not.
- 13:15SPEAKER_02: That would be unhenge.
- 13:16SPEAKER_02: Um, a movie like that where I saw it and I was like, oh yeah, this is like a beautiful one, the acting is good, but like it's deeply, deeply, deeply uninteresting.
- 13:23SPEAKER_02: And it's not fun at all.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: I'm also a big fan of horror, and I think something that I love so much about horror is that even if something, even a bad horror movie, nine out of ten times, is fun.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I completely agree with you there.
- 13:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so that's really big for me.
- 13:41SPEAKER_02: So I think that this, yeah, I think this movie is like a lot of fun.
- 13:45SPEAKER_02: I don't think it takes itself too seriously.
- 13:47SPEAKER_02: I do think there are some great acting moments coming from Arnold Schwarzenegger.
- 13:51SPEAKER_02: I think the costuming is fun.
- 13:54SPEAKER_02: I think this movie made me gay.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: That's that's the take.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: That's my that's my yeah, this movie made me gay.
- 14:03SPEAKER_02: I um yeah, I'm in love with Uma Thurman.
- 14:07SPEAKER_02: I'm in love with Uma Thurman.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: So one one thing you mentioned that uh I found really interesting was that you said she's so uh tall in this.
- 14:14SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 14:15SPEAKER_01: And you found you noticed her how tall.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: I didn't notice that.
- 14:18SPEAKER_01: And then I was reading the trivia on it, and it said something about her being 5'11, and I was like, Wait, is she?
- 14:25SPEAKER_01: I've never noticed her being that tall.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: And then Yeah.
- 14:29SPEAKER_01: I did not I especially didn't notice it in this where she's next to Arnold Schwarzenegger and uh George Clooney, who's not I wouldn't say he's like the tallest person, but she's kind of like level height with him.
- 14:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's really, really tall.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: I I've honestly doesn't feel taller than 5'11.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's very tall.
- 14:48SPEAKER_02: Well that's because for a lot of people's wearing heels for a yeah.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: Sure, sure, sure.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: For a lot of movies, they put men on Apple boxes for shooting.
- 14:58SPEAKER_02: So you don't notice that they're shorter than women, which I think is fucked up.
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: It's the Tom Cruise thing, isn't it?
- 15:05SPEAKER_02: I think it's bad.
- 15:06SPEAKER_02: Just let a man be short.
- 15:08SPEAKER_02: Like, what is the matter?
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: As a short man, I do not care.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much.
- 15:13SPEAKER_02: It's not constructive for either one of us, right?
- 15:15SPEAKER_02: Like, as a self-identified tall woman, it makes me feel self-identified.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: You know what's funny?
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: We're the same height.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: And I'm going as a short man.
- 15:23SPEAKER_02: Yes, I'm exactly, but that's what I'm saying.
- 15:25SPEAKER_02: It's like it's so warped.
- 15:27SPEAKER_02: It's like men who are shorter than like six feet tall are like I'm I'm worthless or whatever, because society is like, oh, men are big, and then all women are supposed to be small.
- 15:37SPEAKER_02: So if you're not a small woman, then you feel worthless.
- 15:39SPEAKER_02: It's just not good.
- 15:40SPEAKER_02: We need to like just like just be our short king, Daniel Craig.
- 15:45SPEAKER_02: Like, that's okay.
- 15:47SPEAKER_01: Is he tiny?
- 15:48SPEAKER_02: Yes, I didn't know that before he was told.
- 15:51SPEAKER_02: I'll tell you.
- 15:52SPEAKER_02: No, I think he's small too.
- 15:54SPEAKER_01: The only one that I ever see embrace it is uh Daniel Radcliffe, actually.
- 15:58SPEAKER_02: Yeah, we love.
- 16:00SPEAKER_02: Daniel Craig.
- 16:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's little.
- 16:03SPEAKER_02: Daniel Craig is 5'10.
- 16:05SPEAKER_02: But once again, let me say this.
- 16:07SPEAKER_02: All of these are lies, right?
- 16:09SPEAKER_02: Like, Daniel Craig is not 5'10.
- 16:11SPEAKER_02: If he's 6'1, he's probably 5'8.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: Tom Cruise says 5'7, and there's no way he's 5'7.
- 16:20SPEAKER_02: Absolutely not.
- 16:21SPEAKER_02: Absolutely not.
- 16:22SPEAKER_02: Tom Cruise is probably 5'5.
- 16:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:28SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 16:29SPEAKER_01: I'm like, all of these people.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: Every person in Hollywood is shorter than they say.
- 16:36SPEAKER_02: All men.
- 16:37SPEAKER_02: But see, I would argue that I would say I think Uma Thurman, according to Google, Uma Thurman is six feet tall.
- 16:42SPEAKER_02: I would say she might even be taller than that, and they're sizing her down.
- 16:48SPEAKER_02: Because I do that for auditions.
- 16:50SPEAKER_02: I size myself down a little bit.
- 16:52SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 16:53SPEAKER_02: Unless they're like, we're looking for a big tall girl.
- 16:56SPEAKER_02: Then I say, Oh, I'm a big tall girl.
- 16:58SPEAKER_02: But in general, I'll say, I'm five seven.
- 17:01SPEAKER_02: I'm not five seven.
- 17:03SPEAKER_02: I just give myself a little small.
- 17:05SPEAKER_02: And then I slouch, I say, I'm small.
- 17:08SPEAKER_02: I'm just a tiny, tiny girl.
- 17:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they want you to be so tiny.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: And I love that.
- 17:12SPEAKER_02: I have a weird, I have a weird resentment towards like people who are really small.
- 17:17SPEAKER_02: And I do, I feel a lot of jealousy because I remember being on the playground as a child.
- 17:22SPEAKER_02: We're really kind of breaking into my like childhood trauma, but I remember being on the playground as a child, and like I have such a distinct memory of like, I don't know if you did this as a as a boy or in the UK, but we would play house, and it would be like everyone on the playground is like a different thing.
- 17:42SPEAKER_02: And I was always they wouldn't let me be part of the family because I was too big and looked too much like an adult.
- 17:50SPEAKER_02: So I had to be the mailman.
- 17:52SPEAKER_02: I was always the mailman.
- 17:55SPEAKER_02: And that fucked with them, right?
- 17:59SPEAKER_02: All the little tiny girls were cute and they were like, because they didn't want me to even be related.
- 18:03SPEAKER_02: They're like, you're not related to us, and you can't stay for too long.
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: You're the mailman.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: You can come in, drop unreported information off and leave.
- 18:11SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they're like, man, you're too big, you seem too old, you gotta get out of here.
- 18:15SPEAKER_02: Um, but I was so jealous of all the little girls, but like the tiny ones, you know, people would people would be like, well, you're the baby, and like pick, you know, the girls in fifth grade would like pick them up and like hold them, be like, you're so cute.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: And all the teachers would always be like, oh, like Jen is so cute, she's so little.
- 18:29SPEAKER_02: And they're like, Jordan looks like a big squid from the ocean.
- 18:33SPEAKER_02: I just felt so so sad.
- 18:36SPEAKER_02: I really did felt feel so wild at that time.
- 18:41SPEAKER_02: But yeah, I think seeing Uma Thurman, I was like, wow, look how hot she is.
- 18:44SPEAKER_02: And she's also she also takes up a lot of space.
- 18:48SPEAKER_02: And that felt very cool to me.
- 18:52SPEAKER_02: But she's very hot.
- 18:55SPEAKER_01: This is yeah, this is probably the hottest movie for her.
- 19:02SPEAKER_02: I would agree.
- 19:04SPEAKER_02: I would probably agree.
- 19:06SPEAKER_02: Minus some of the some of the fight scenes in Kill Bill are pretty hot.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: But she's very hot, and she's hot.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: Oh no, go on, go on.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: I was gonna say she's hot as the scientist before the transformation, and then we have the transformation, and she's even hotter.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: My my thing is I've never really been into her, so that's why I'm like, eh.
- 19:28SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 19:29SPEAKER_02: So interesting.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: Okay, so then who's your celebrity crush?
- 19:32SPEAKER_02: Just so I know.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: I have no idea.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: You don't know.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: I don't have a celebrity, I don't think I have like one celebrity crush.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: I don't think.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: That I can tell you.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: Okay, but who who was like important to you as a child, maybe?
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: As a child.
- 19:47SPEAKER_02: Who formed your sexuality at a young age?
- 19:49SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: Um.
- 19:54SPEAKER_01: Oh my god, who did?
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna have to.
- 20:00SPEAKER_02: Has it gotten happened yet?
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: No.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: And you've not seen a celebrity yet that was that's attractive to you, you've yet to find one.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: No, I'm just trying to think.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: I don't think I ever had like one specific person, that's why.
- 20:13SPEAKER_02: Wow, that's so interesting.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: I've got to have a think about that.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: It will come to me.
- 20:17SPEAKER_01: It will come to me in the middle of us talking.
- 20:19SPEAKER_02: Please, please just shout it out if it does.
- 20:20SPEAKER_02: But I do have to bring up one other thing is that you know, I'm talking a lot about Uma Thurman, but I also don't want to credit Alicia Silverstone.
- 20:26SPEAKER_02: I don't want to discredit her.
- 20:27SPEAKER_02: She's also very hot in this movie.
- 20:28SPEAKER_02: Everyone's very hot.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: In a very different way.
- 20:31SPEAKER_02: In a very different way, absolutely.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 20:33SPEAKER_01: But very different demographic.
- 20:35SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm a little freaked.
- 20:37SPEAKER_02: So Uma Thurman is more she's evil.
- 20:40SPEAKER_02: She's, you know, she's not obsessed with her grandfather.
- 20:43SPEAKER_02: Um, and I like that.
- 20:44SPEAKER_02: And Alicia Silverstone is a little too goody two shoes for me.
- 20:48SPEAKER_01: It's the goody two shoes like breaking the rules.
- 20:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I don't like that.
- 20:52SPEAKER_02: I need I like a little spice, you know?
- 20:55SPEAKER_02: Uma thurman is she wears that big gorilla costume at one point.
- 20:59SPEAKER_01: Oh, that is so ridiculous.
- 21:01SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: I watched it again and I kind of forgot about that part, and as I'm watching it, I'm like, wow, this is so hot.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Okay, so we have to get into this now.
- 21:10SPEAKER_01: Because you said you were saying that that reminded me, you said when you were watching it, you were telling me before we started about how you watched it recently.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: And I think you have to watch it.
- 21:20SPEAKER_01: I did, I watched it.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: Yes, I watched it like a week and a half ago because I I've started this thing during quarantine where I'll do dinner and a movie nights, and I have a whole Google doc of them where I'll pick a movie and then I'll plan a very elaborate themed meal to go with the movie.
- 21:35SPEAKER_02: And then my roommate and I will watch it and eat the meal.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: So I decided to do Batman and Robin because my roommate had never seen it and I hadn't seen it in a couple of years.
- 21:45SPEAKER_02: And I made um billionaire bat burgers with poison ivy herb fries.
- 21:53SPEAKER_02: So they were like impossible burgers with fancy cheese and caramelized onions and a black garlic.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Garlic aioli for the burgers.
- 22:02SPEAKER_02: And then I made like oven-fried potato wedges with a garlic, oil, parsley, cilantro kind of herb mixture.
- 22:16SPEAKER_02: And that was our dinner, and we watched the movie, and it was great.
- 22:20SPEAKER_01: What did your roommate think of it?
- 22:23SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think it he thought it was very silly, but also, I mean, he's also gay, so I think he enjoyed how homoerotic it was from the other side.
- 22:31SPEAKER_02: So I think that I think that was nice.
- 22:34SPEAKER_02: I also think that we both appreciated.
- 22:37SPEAKER_02: I hate CGI in general.
- 22:42SPEAKER_02: I'm really not a big fan.
- 22:44SPEAKER_02: And I think that this movie is from a time when we weren't doing everything in CGI yet.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: That is one great thing about it.
- 22:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's so fun.
- 22:52SPEAKER_02: And there's like one fight scene where it's like they're on like roller skates.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: Oh no, Ice uh ice skates?
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: Ice skates, yeah.
- 23:03SPEAKER_02: Yeah, which is like so fun.
- 23:05SPEAKER_02: And they're, you know, they're on like little like bikes and weird stuff.
- 23:08SPEAKER_02: I'm like, oh, that's so that's so fun.
- 23:10SPEAKER_02: It's all just like makeup and stunt, which I really, really love.
- 23:15SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so I think that felt very fun to me.
- 23:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it happened when I was watching Hook recently, where I was like, I love I love it when they like actually design the sets properly and they use them and they do the stunts on them, and it's all realistic.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: And there's like one C one bit of CGI in the whole movie, and it would be so happy to be.
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, yeah.
- 23:35SPEAKER_02: They're using little trampolines and things like that.
- 23:38SPEAKER_02: I I love that, and I love fight choreography.
- 23:42SPEAKER_02: Um, any movie that has like really good fight choreography, I'm I'm sold.
- 23:46SPEAKER_02: But so many movies now, especially movies geared at a younger audience or that have appeal to a younger audience, which I guess Batman and Robin kind of does or is supposed to.
- 23:58SPEAKER_02: I'm not really actually sure who this movie was targeted at, other than that's another thing.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: Who is this target audience?
- 24:04SPEAKER_01: A young homosexual.
- 24:05SPEAKER_01: Um, but well, it's made by Joel Schumacher, so okay.
- 24:10SPEAKER_02: Um it's like, you know, it's it's just it feels fun.
- 24:15SPEAKER_02: And nowadays there's so much CGI, I don't like it.
- 24:18SPEAKER_02: So I think this felt very, very fun.
- 24:21SPEAKER_02: Um, and even just the fact that like poison ivy becomes poison ivy because we push over a shelf with stuff on it on top of her with the venom on it, and we're not even really sure how she ingests it.
- 24:36SPEAKER_02: It's just like a shelf falls on her and now she's extra sexy.
- 24:40SPEAKER_02: And that that felt fun to me.
- 24:44SPEAKER_02: I just it feels like a fun reality that I can just kind of accept.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, like what are you what are your feelings on the other Batmans then?
- 24:53SPEAKER_01: But if because this is very different, uh other than the 60s Batman, this is very different to the rest of them, I feel like.
- 25:01SPEAKER_02: Well, I think this is one of the few Batman movies that does feel more female-centric to me, which I think is really nice.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: It feels more balanced to me.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: I mean, in terms of like, you know, the Christopher Nolan Batmans, I like those two.
- 25:17SPEAKER_02: Don't get me wrong.
- 25:18SPEAKER_02: I'm not an idiot.
- 25:19SPEAKER_02: I went opening weekend and saw them in theaters like everybody else did, and really enjoyed them.
- 25:25SPEAKER_02: But they're not fun, you know, and I'm I'm I don't care about Christian Bale at all.
- 25:35SPEAKER_02: And I think we're so oh, we're so infatuated these days with kind of like a dark take on X thing.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 25:46SPEAKER_02: But I I don't I don't know.
- 25:50SPEAKER_02: Um they they're just they're good action movies.
- 25:53SPEAKER_01: Um but they're not Batman and Robin.
- 25:57SPEAKER_02: They're not Batman and Robin, I'll tell you that much.
- 25:59SPEAKER_02: I if you if you like the Christopher Nolan Batman movies more than Batman and Robin, I would argue that you like style more than substance.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: And I think a lot of people would say it's the other way around.
- 26:15SPEAKER_01: I think it's the other way around.
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: But I would argue that because I think so much of the Christopher Nolan Batman movies, it is just kind of like you're in the world and it's dark and it's gritty, and that's the whole thing, and okay, cool, but you're not having fun.
- 26:36SPEAKER_02: You're not you're not where's the substance?
- 26:40SPEAKER_02: But in the character, you're not enjoying the characters.
- 26:44SPEAKER_02: What character you do you enjoy from the Christopher Nolan Batman movies?
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Um, I like Okay, yeah.
- 26:56SPEAKER_02: You know, oh you like Heath Ledger as the Joker, okay, because you know he had a good performance as well.
- 27:04SPEAKER_01: He's the one character in that he's the one character in that movie that I do enjoy.
- 27:07SPEAKER_01: And then maybe in the I don't know, maybe Scarecrow and I don't even like Bane, to be honest.
- 27:14SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think I only like Bane because I like Tom Hardy.
- 27:18SPEAKER_02: That's you know what I mean?
- 27:19SPEAKER_02: Like I'm watching it and I'm like, oh, that's Tom Hardy.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: He's doing a good job.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: He, you know, oh good.
- 27:25SPEAKER_02: And that's how I feel about a lot of movies now.
- 27:27SPEAKER_02: It reminds me of when I saw Alan Cummings do a one-man Macbeth on Broadway.
- 27:32SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 27:33SPEAKER_02: Where the whole time I was watching it, I was just like, wow, you're doing a lot of work.
- 27:38SPEAKER_02: That's so hard that you did all this work.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: Look at you memorizing all these lines and doing all this work.
- 27:46SPEAKER_02: Was I enjoying it?
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: No.
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: And I am not particularly interested in just watching something to be like, oh, the work that was put into this was impressive.
- 27:59SPEAKER_02: I think there's merit there, but I don't necessarily think that it's as enjoyable.
- 28:04SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:05SPEAKER_02: And I think we've kind of lost that fun.
- 28:09SPEAKER_02: That fun.
- 28:10SPEAKER_02: We don't have a lot of like big movies that feel camp to me anymore, which I think is sick.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: We don't at all.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: We don't at all.
- 28:16SPEAKER_01: I was thinking about that recently.
- 28:17SPEAKER_01: I was trying to think of any of them, and I can't honestly.
- 28:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think the biggest one, I think I I don't even know if I would call this camp, honestly, but I'm infatuated with the movie Ma starring Octavia Spencer.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: I've heard so many things and I've never seen it.
- 28:31SPEAKER_02: I'm infatuated with it, and I think it's incredible, and I think you should give it a watch and then talk to me.
- 28:37SPEAKER_01: I wouldn't even call that a big movie.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: That was just like a wasn't that just like a low budget.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: Yes, it certainly wasn't a thriller.
- 28:44SPEAKER_02: But when I think of something that comes out, and I guess that is like horror, like when I think of something now that does feel like campy or silly in an enjoyable way that's not like a children's movie or whatever, I think a lot of it is leans more towards horror.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: That's I think that's the only way they can do it now, because it's because they I think horror tends to lean cheaper as well.
- 29:05SPEAKER_01: So that's why they can do it.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: But uh yeah, so for anyone who hasn't seen this, it's Batman and Robin.
- 29:13SPEAKER_01: We all know Batman.
- 29:15SPEAKER_01: It's so the base the we all know what Batman is.
- 29:19SPEAKER_01: Um the premise of this one is that the character Mr.
- 29:22SPEAKER_01: Freeze has come in and he's trying to steal some diamonds to like save because he wants to save um his dying wife who is like who is encased in some water that's saving her, keeping her going.
- 29:39SPEAKER_01: Mr.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: Freeze he fell into a a vat of something and like became frozen almost, and he got these frozen powers.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: And then on the uh other side of that there is this poison ivy woman who is uh has also become bad through venom that's taken over her body at the s at the hands of a scientist who she was working with.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: And this other scientist created Bane as well, who is in this movie is very different to the other Bane.
- 30:09SPEAKER_01: It's just like he says nothing, he's a giant wrestler type of character and he just destroys I love it.
- 30:18SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 30:19SPEAKER_02: He's just her henchman.
- 30:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah, he has no lines.
- 30:24SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 30:27SPEAKER_01: And he is awesome.
- 30:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's just really strong and he doesn't say anything, and I think that's great.
- 30:33SPEAKER_02: I think that's awesome.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: I also think Mr.
- 30:35SPEAKER_02: Freeze, I love.
- 30:39SPEAKER_01: I love No, I hate.
- 30:42SPEAKER_01: I hate Mr.
- 30:43SPEAKER_01: Freeze.
- 30:43SPEAKER_02: Why?
- 30:44SPEAKER_01: Because he only speaks in pun.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: He only speaks in pun.
- 30:48SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 30:49SPEAKER_01: No, I love that.
- 30:50SPEAKER_02: That's high style.
- 30:51SPEAKER_02: Because they're not good.
- 30:52SPEAKER_01: They're not good.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: That's high-stylized camp for me.
- 30:54SPEAKER_02: I like puns.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 30:55SPEAKER_02: Those are not good puns.
- 30:57SPEAKER_02: A whole group.
- 30:58SPEAKER_02: Oh, I just love it.
- 30:59SPEAKER_02: He has a whole group of henchmen that sing a theme song for him.
- 31:04SPEAKER_02: They sing a theme song.
- 31:06SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 31:07SPEAKER_02: And all of them are exactly, and all of his henchmen are cartoonishly cold, which I also think is very funny.
- 31:15SPEAKER_02: They're all like violently shivering, wearing little coats, having like icicles hanging off their eyebrows.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: Except for one, Vivica Fox.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: Vivica A.
- 31:25SPEAKER_02: Fox, his sexy girlfriend that he is not interested in.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: Her, she, I will say, I do think that the not the worst part of the movie is Vivica A.
- 31:33SPEAKER_02: Fox, but I'm like, she was wildly underutilized in a way that feels unjust.
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it feels unjust and problematic to me.
- 31:42SPEAKER_02: And I'm just like, first of all, the costuming on her character is impeccable.
- 31:48SPEAKER_02: She is also unbelievably sexy.
- 31:51SPEAKER_02: She's incredible.
- 31:52SPEAKER_02: And she's a very talented actor.
- 31:54SPEAKER_02: So I'm like, why do we not use her more?
- 31:57SPEAKER_02: I also think she's used solely as a plot device, or not even a plot device, but just to instill that like even a sexy woman can't trick trick him into not loving his essentially dead wife.
- 32:14SPEAKER_02: And I don't, I don't need that.
- 32:16SPEAKER_02: I'm like, if we're gonna put a woman in the movie, let's let her be a character and not just kind of a device to highlight something about another character.
- 32:27SPEAKER_02: I think that feels bad to me.
- 32:29SPEAKER_02: So I think that is the the biggest part of the movie that I struggle with.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: Because I'm like, we could have definitely seen more of her.
- 32:37SPEAKER_02: Or not had her.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: Just not had her.
- 32:40SPEAKER_01: She doesn't need to be in it.
- 32:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there's no point.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: And it's also like, who is she?
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: What is she doing?
- 32:44SPEAKER_02: She's not she's clearly not his girlfriend, but she like lives there.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 32:48SPEAKER_02: It's very confusing.
- 32:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 32:50SPEAKER_01: It's very strange.
- 32:52SPEAKER_01: I don't know what her I don't know what they were doing with her in it, other than maybe like it's maybe it's just to give the the whole thing of like, oh, he's so focused on this one thing, which is to save his actual wife.
- 33:05SPEAKER_01: But you don't need another woman to do that.
- 33:07SPEAKER_02: Absolutely not.
- 33:08SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I believed that he was dedicated to his wife when I saw that his wife was encased in her nightgown.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: That's all you need to know.
- 33:15SPEAKER_02: In a big tub of water.
- 33:17SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm I buy it.
- 33:18SPEAKER_02: I don't need.
- 33:20SPEAKER_02: I'm not thinking, like, well, but what if he was faced with sexual temptation?
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't care.
- 33:25SPEAKER_02: I don't need it.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: Just let it go.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: Mr.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: Freeze is such an insane character, though.
- 33:32SPEAKER_01: Like that it's first of all, like, why did they choose him out of the the entire history of the Batman comics?
- 33:41SPEAKER_01: They went with Mr.
- 33:42SPEAKER_01: Freeze.
- 33:43SPEAKER_02: So I want to turn that to you and say, why not?
- 33:49SPEAKER_01: Because he is such a nothing character.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: Okay, but it's it's him.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: Poison Ivy is a better character than he is.
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm not gonna argue that with you, but he's so they really do something fun with him in this movie.
- 34:07SPEAKER_02: And his once again, his costuming is incredible.
- 34:11SPEAKER_02: He runs on diamonds.
- 34:14SPEAKER_02: Like, I'm like, yes, this is this is this feels fun to me.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: I like it.
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: He's so fun.
- 34:19SPEAKER_02: And I think Arnold Schwarzenegger was a really fun choice.
- 34:23SPEAKER_02: I don't he's such a fun choice.
- 34:25SPEAKER_01: The explanation they give for why he runs on diamonds is so funny as well.
- 34:28SPEAKER_01: Like they say, like, oh, he runs on diamonds, which are being kept together by being they're using lasers on those, which on the diamonds, which then in turn freeze him.
- 34:41SPEAKER_02: And hey, as you may be I don't know if that makes sense.
- 34:44SPEAKER_02: I'm not a scientist.
- 34:46SPEAKER_02: I know I'm not a scientist.
- 34:48SPEAKER_02: I don't need I don't need you know, and and that could be true, and I'll be like I don't know anything about diamonds, I'll buy it, and I'll tell you, so many other movies are out here doing BS stuff with science that I am certainly, you know, if I have to see one more shark movie where a shark hunts a person, a thing that sharks don't do, and no one's gonna say anything about that, I'm gonna give Batman and Robin a pass.
- 35:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: I've okay.
- 35:22SPEAKER_01: I'm fine giving Batman and Robin a pass for like ridiculous science.
- 35:25SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm fine for it, everything.
- 35:28SPEAKER_01: I just think it's not well written.
- 35:34SPEAKER_01: I think and the shocking thing is it's a Kiva Goldsman who is a very good writer.
- 35:41SPEAKER_02: And yeah, but it's fun.
- 35:44SPEAKER_02: People want to have fun.
- 35:45SPEAKER_02: It feels like and you're not watching it for the dialogue.
- 35:50SPEAKER_02: You know, it's uh no it's a problem.
- 35:53SPEAKER_01: That's where I disagree.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: You are watching it for the dialogue because Batman, any comic book movie, you are watching it for the dialogue as well.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: It needs good dialogue.
- 36:02SPEAKER_02: Listen, what I'll say is I am not a diehard comic book fan, like growing up, so I understand people having stronger opinions about this than I do because it is something that they are tied to from childhood or whatever.
- 36:14SPEAKER_02: Like, I understand that we are in different places because of that.
- 36:17SPEAKER_02: I think, first of all, this movie is a masterclass in costume.
- 36:24SPEAKER_02: I think the costume is incredible, and I think it is so fun.
- 36:31SPEAKER_02: I also think it's a masterclass in lighting.
- 36:34SPEAKER_02: I think the lighting design for this movie is spectacular.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: I have no issue with those.
- 36:40SPEAKER_02: Okay, so we're working in the right direction.
- 36:42SPEAKER_02: I think the ambiance is incredible.
- 36:45SPEAKER_02: I think that what the actors do with the dialogue, incredible.
- 36:51SPEAKER_02: I love it.
- 36:52SPEAKER_02: My biggest dialogue-based issue with the movie is Alicia Silverstone's interaction with Alfred.
- 37:03SPEAKER_02: Anyone said I'm like, this is with any yeah, but I'm like, her relationship with her grandfather is weird.
- 37:10SPEAKER_02: The way they speak to each other is weird.
- 37:12SPEAKER_02: I don't like that.
- 37:13SPEAKER_02: That feels weird to me.
- 37:16SPEAKER_02: Um, so I don't like that.
- 37:18SPEAKER_01: And I'm not even grandfather, uncle.
- 37:20SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 37:21SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah, whatever he is.
- 37:23SPEAKER_02: That's all weird.
- 37:24SPEAKER_02: I don't like that.
- 37:24SPEAKER_02: It feels weird to me.
- 37:26SPEAKER_02: Um his plot line is weird to me.
- 37:31SPEAKER_01: I don't need any unnecessary.
- 37:33SPEAKER_02: Very much so.
- 37:34SPEAKER_02: Like he's sick, okay.
- 37:36SPEAKER_02: Like, I just what?
- 37:37SPEAKER_01: Um He's the only one that's returning as well from the other ones.
- 37:41SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 37:42SPEAKER_01: Which I I didn't remember.
- 37:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, very confusing.
- 37:46SPEAKER_02: So I guess they felt like they had to give him a little extra something.
- 37:51SPEAKER_02: But yeah, not really sure why that was necessary.
- 37:55SPEAKER_02: But I I think the way that Uma Thurman delivers her dialogue is incredible.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: Every so over the top.
- 38:04SPEAKER_01: I love it.
- 38:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, every word that comes out of her mouth makes me feel horny and sleepy.
- 38:11SPEAKER_02: Like it's, you know what I mean?
- 38:12SPEAKER_02: Like everything that she says.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: She's done her job.
- 38:15SPEAKER_01: That's what she's there to do.
- 38:16SPEAKER_02: That's what I want from acting.
- 38:18SPEAKER_02: I think that it's just like every line she says, I feel fully encompassed.
- 38:22SPEAKER_02: I feel like I'm succumbing to her poison.
- 38:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 38:26SPEAKER_02: Which I love.
- 38:28SPEAKER_02: And I don't care about anything else, honestly.
- 38:30SPEAKER_02: And I think I think Arnold Schwarzenegger's fun too.
- 38:33SPEAKER_02: I honestly forget this movie should be called Poison Ivy and Mr.
- 38:37SPEAKER_02: Freeze, because I forget about the rest of the characters.
- 38:39SPEAKER_02: I honestly don't think about George Pliny at all.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: I don't think about Batman.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: I don't, I definitely don't think about Robin and Batgirl.
- 38:46SPEAKER_01: I do not care about any of them.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: Not at all.
- 38:49SPEAKER_01: I'd much rather watch a I would much rather watch the other two.
- 38:52SPEAKER_01: You're right.
- 38:52SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 38:53SPEAKER_02: So, but what I will say is I like how prominently they were featured.
- 38:57SPEAKER_02: I think a lot of movies, that's one thing I feel about the Christopher Nolan movies.
- 39:00SPEAKER_02: I'm like, we're spending a lot of time with Batman, who ultimately is like very boring to me.
- 39:05SPEAKER_02: I don't care about Yeah, there's only so much you can do with him.
- 39:07SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and it's like I just don't care about him.
- 39:09SPEAKER_02: I know a lot of people thought that George Clooney was a bad Batman.
- 39:12SPEAKER_02: I'm like, why?
- 39:14SPEAKER_02: He's like hot and seems nice.
- 39:16SPEAKER_02: Like, let us have a hot, nice Batman.
- 39:18SPEAKER_01: Like, why does it because it's because he wasn't sad.
- 39:22SPEAKER_02: And I don't like that.
- 39:24SPEAKER_02: I don't need a billionaire man.
- 39:25SPEAKER_01: That's the that's Batman.
- 39:27SPEAKER_02: I don't need to know about a billionaire man who's sad.
- 39:29SPEAKER_02: That's not interesting.
- 39:30SPEAKER_02: I don't care.
- 39:31SPEAKER_02: I don't care.
- 39:34SPEAKER_02: I also think that, you know, when you see now we're we're so infatuated with someone's process and someone's behavior.
- 39:43SPEAKER_02: And by someone I mean only men.
- 39:45SPEAKER_02: Um and I just don't care.
- 39:47SPEAKER_02: I don't care that that um Christian Bale like does X, Y, and Z to get in the headspace of Batman.
- 39:55SPEAKER_02: That is so uninteresting to me.
- 39:57SPEAKER_02: I want to see George Clooney come on set, be nice to all the people that work in catering, and then just be a normal person in Batman.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: That doesn't mean that you mean it's not good to yell at the at the uh the extras because they're in your way.
- 40:15SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 40:16SPEAKER_02: Yes, I'm just not, I'm so uninterested in that.
- 40:18SPEAKER_02: And I find that a lot of movies that people really like have a lot of that around it.
- 40:22SPEAKER_02: I don't care that Leonardo DiCaprio ate a liver during the Revenant.
- 40:27SPEAKER_02: That's not acting.
- 40:28SPEAKER_02: I don't care that Daniel Day Lewis goes and lives in a cabin for six months and doesn't talk to his family so he can play another older man.
- 40:39SPEAKER_02: Like that is not impressive to me.
- 40:40SPEAKER_02: I'm like, okay, you are.
- 40:42SPEAKER_02: But then acting is not impressive to me.
- 40:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 40:44SPEAKER_02: I'm like, maybe you are bad at acting, actually.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: If you cannot do it happen, then there's not, yeah.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: If you have to become that person, yeah.
- 40:52SPEAKER_01: That's not gonna be.
- 40:53SPEAKER_02: I'm like, that just doesn't interest me at all.
- 40:56SPEAKER_02: So that I think something where I'm just like, seems like everybody just came on set, had a good time, costuming was fun, and the the energy feels fun.
- 41:09SPEAKER_02: That feels positive to me, and I like that.
- 41:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 41:12SPEAKER_01: One thing I found funny was that I saw that it said Arnold Schwarzenegger, he only it said he only worked six weeks on this.
- 41:19SPEAKER_01: And I was like, what do you mean only?
- 41:21SPEAKER_01: That's still a long time to be working on this.
- 41:24SPEAKER_01: That's not a short time.
- 41:25SPEAKER_02: Absolutely not.
- 41:26SPEAKER_02: No, the way that we've gotten about acting is so unbelievably masturbatory and like sick.
- 41:31SPEAKER_02: As someone who like went to acting school and is an actor, like I'm just like, it it is so uh wild to me.
- 41:39SPEAKER_02: It's like let someone just have fun.
- 41:41SPEAKER_02: Like, let him go on set and like wear a funny costume that where he's made of ice and just like have fun.
- 41:47SPEAKER_02: Like, what is so what is so wrong with that?
- 41:49SPEAKER_02: Why are we so infatuated with like personal torture being tied to professional work?
- 41:56SPEAKER_02: I know it feels ridiculous, stupid to me.
- 42:00SPEAKER_02: And I think this movie being so fun.
- 42:03SPEAKER_02: I don't know, I feel like now I need to look up.
- 42:05SPEAKER_02: I'm like, did these people have fun on set?
- 42:06SPEAKER_02: If they didn't, I'm gonna die.
- 42:09SPEAKER_01: If he didn't, do you know what guess take a guess how much he made for it?
- 42:13SPEAKER_02: Oh my gosh.
- 42:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, I have I'm so bad at this.
- 42:16SPEAKER_02: A million dollars?
- 42:18SPEAKER_01: Arnold Schwarzenegger made 25 million for this.
- 42:22SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 42:23SPEAKER_02: That's wild.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, of course he did it.
- 42:27SPEAKER_02: That's wild.
- 42:28SPEAKER_02: Of course he made this.
- 42:29SPEAKER_01: That's sick, but I mean he is the first credited person as well.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: So go ahead.
- 42:36SPEAKER_02: Well, because this was I mean, he was he the most famous person in this movie if he was a good one.
- 42:40SPEAKER_01: He's credited above Clooney.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: He's credited above Batman.
- 42:46SPEAKER_02: Wasn't he more famous than George Clooney?
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: Of course.
- 42:49SPEAKER_02: It's so hard to know.
- 42:50SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 42:51SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 42:53SPEAKER_01: The thing is, Clooney was AR famous at this point.
- 42:56SPEAKER_02: That's TV famous.
- 42:57SPEAKER_02: That's different than movies.
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was not the same.
- 43:01SPEAKER_01: He'd done that and then he'd done like a couple of small movies.
- 43:05unknown: Yeah.
- 43:08SPEAKER_02: I know.
- 43:08SPEAKER_02: So I'm like, I get it.
- 43:09SPEAKER_02: Like, good, honestly, good for Arnold Schwarzenegger.
- 43:12SPEAKER_02: I just don't understand.
- 43:14SPEAKER_02: I think it's fun.
- 43:15SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 43:16SPEAKER_02: I'm like looking now because I'm like, I want to know how many other people got paid for this movie.
- 43:21SPEAKER_01: I always find it so funny.
- 43:22SPEAKER_01: Clooney probably got like five.
- 43:27SPEAKER_02: The budget was$160 million.
- 43:31SPEAKER_02: And I love that.
- 43:33SPEAKER_01: It makes sense when you see it.
- 43:35SPEAKER_02: Arnold Schwarzenegger made$25 million plus a percentage of merchandising.
- 43:40SPEAKER_02: George Clooney got 10 million.
- 43:43SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 43:45SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 43:46SPEAKER_02: I mean, people, it's the it's titled on like so many websites as like the infamous$160 million flop.
- 43:53SPEAKER_02: I'm like, why was this movie such a flop?
- 43:55SPEAKER_01: People like like I saw it in theaters.
- 43:58SPEAKER_02: I'm jealous.
- 43:59SPEAKER_02: I wish I had.
- 44:00SPEAKER_02: Seen it in theaters.
- 44:01SPEAKER_01: So I remember I remember because it was like me and my family all went out, and we were all gonna go see a movie, and everyone was gonna go see Jurassic Park 2.
- 44:15SPEAKER_01: And I was like, no, I really want to see Batman and Robin.
- 44:18SPEAKER_01: And so my dad had to take me to see Batman and Robin while the rest of my family went to see Jurassic Park 2.
- 44:25SPEAKER_02: Listen, you got your own kind of experience and that Bashall.
- 44:31SPEAKER_01: I have no idea why that was like the one that I wanted to see, though.
- 44:36SPEAKER_01: Out of the two of them.
- 44:37SPEAKER_02: Because it is good!
- 44:39SPEAKER_01: But I don't know why I was so insistent.
- 44:41SPEAKER_01: Why was I so insistent?
- 44:42SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, I have Batman and Robin.
- 44:45SPEAKER_02: Oh, because it's a good I was a little eight-year-old boy.
- 44:49SPEAKER_02: That sounds awesome.
- 44:51SPEAKER_02: I would have been friends with you.
- 44:53SPEAKER_01: I think, oh, it's just I'm also You could have taken me as my mom.
- 44:58SPEAKER_02: I should have yeah, I should have taken you.
- 45:00SPEAKER_02: Wait, how old do you think I am?
- 45:02SPEAKER_01: No, because you were so tall.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: Oh, well, that's true.
- 45:05SPEAKER_02: I was like, wait, I don't think I'm that much older than you.
- 45:07SPEAKER_01: Um You're younger than me.
- 45:09SPEAKER_02: Okay, there we go.
- 45:10SPEAKER_02: Thank you for saying that.
- 45:12SPEAKER_02: Um yeah, apparently there was supposed to be another one of these movies.
- 45:19unknown: Yeah.
- 45:20SPEAKER_02: One of the songs won a Grammy.
- 45:23SPEAKER_01: Which song?
- 45:24SPEAKER_01: Because I don't remember any songs in this.
- 45:27SPEAKER_02: It was called Oh no.
- 45:35SPEAKER_02: Oh wait, no, this maybe it's not that.
- 45:37SPEAKER_02: There's one R.
- 45:38SPEAKER_02: Kelly song, but I don't think it's that.
- 45:39SPEAKER_02: That's what I thought it was for a second.
- 45:41SPEAKER_02: Um, okay, it's Smashing Pumpkins.
- 45:43SPEAKER_01: There's a Smashing Pumpkins song called that's probably the one over the credits.
- 45:46SPEAKER_02: It's called The End is the Beginning is the End.
- 45:51SPEAKER_01: That won a Grammy.
- 45:53SPEAKER_02: And it won a Grammy.
- 45:55SPEAKER_01: Well, there is the one from Batman Forever, which is the one before this, which is uh Kiss from Emrose.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: And nothing's gonna beat that.
- 46:03SPEAKER_02: I don't like I don't like that.
- 46:05SPEAKER_02: I this movie is perfect.
- 46:07SPEAKER_02: I'm looking at an article now, and it's just like Joel Schumacher has apologized for this movie.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: And oh, he shouldn't apologize.
- 46:14SPEAKER_02: And this was Empire magazine's worst movie ever.
- 46:17SPEAKER_02: I'm like, excuse me.
- 46:20SPEAKER_02: There are so I'm just tired of movies like The Master being hailed as a good movie and this movie being hailed as a not good movie.
- 46:37SPEAKER_02: I'll say it.
- 46:38SPEAKER_02: I'll be brave and I'll say it.
- 46:40SPEAKER_01: You'll be brave.
- 46:41SPEAKER_01: That is a very brave statement.
- 46:43SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
- 46:44SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry that I am not impressed by Joaquin Phoenix humping the sand and being a freak of Zoid.
- 46:53SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
- 46:55SPEAKER_02: I'm sorry.
- 46:56SPEAKER_02: I'm sure Paul Thomas Anderson listens to this podcast and also, yeah, he's my number one fan.
- 47:04SPEAKER_02: I don't like his work.
- 47:05SPEAKER_02: No, no, you didn't.
- 47:06SPEAKER_02: I lost a fan, okay?
- 47:07SPEAKER_02: I lost a fan.
- 47:08SPEAKER_02: You didn't.
- 47:09SPEAKER_02: This isn't a this isn't your fault.
- 47:10SPEAKER_02: This is me, you know?
- 47:11SPEAKER_02: And I want to be clear that none of my thoughts are are representative of you or this podcast.
- 47:18SPEAKER_02: Um it's on me, but I don't I don't like Paul Thomas Anderson, and I do like 1997's Batman and Robin.
- 47:28SPEAKER_01: But you don't like 1998's Boogie Nights?
- 47:33SPEAKER_02: No.
- 47:33SPEAKER_02: I mean, well, yeah, okay, I like Boogie Nights fine.
- 47:36SPEAKER_02: I think it's my favorite Paul Thomas Anderson thing.
- 47:38SPEAKER_01: But in general, I'm just like I love Paul but Tom I love Boogie Nights, but I I'm not a huge Paul Thomas Anderson fan.
- 47:45SPEAKER_02: But it's just like I don't want I just wanna I wanna watch a fun movie.
- 47:50SPEAKER_01: I know, I know.
- 47:51SPEAKER_02: Um let's have fun, let's enjoy life.
- 47:53SPEAKER_02: I don't want to watch another movie about a bad man.
- 47:56SPEAKER_02: I wanna watch a movie about a sexy bad woman.
- 48:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:03SPEAKER_01: And by the way, about 10 minutes ago I did think of my my formative crush.
- 48:07SPEAKER_02: Paul Thomas Anderson?
- 48:09SPEAKER_01: No.
- 48:09SPEAKER_01: Oh Jennifer Love Hewitt.
- 48:11SPEAKER_02: Oh, okay, that's a good one.
- 48:14SPEAKER_01: That's a good one.
- 48:15SPEAKER_01: I was like, when can I bring it up?
- 48:17SPEAKER_01: It doesn't really fit in with anything.
- 48:20SPEAKER_02: Um no, that's a good one.
- 48:21SPEAKER_02: I I like, I think, you know, a little underrated.
- 48:23SPEAKER_02: Are you currently watching the show 911?
- 48:25SPEAKER_02: She's the.
- 48:26SPEAKER_01: No, I just found out about it.
- 48:28SPEAKER_01: I saw a TikTok video about it.
- 48:30SPEAKER_02: It's the most bonker show I've ever seen, but I do watch it.
- 48:34SPEAKER_01: Did you did wait, did you also see the TikTok video about it that was just talking about how ridiculous it is?
- 48:39SPEAKER_02: I didn't, but I should watch it because I love TikTok and I know I like the show 911.
- 48:45SPEAKER_01: You were also killing it on TikTok.
- 48:47SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much.
- 48:48SPEAKER_02: That's so nice of you.
- 48:50SPEAKER_02: I um things that are dumb seem to do well on TikTok.
- 48:54SPEAKER_02: And that as we're all learning through this podcast, I think that's kind of my MO.
- 48:58SPEAKER_02: I like things that are silly and fun and dumb.
- 49:00SPEAKER_01: I haven't cracked it yet, but I'm also like too lazy with it.
- 49:04SPEAKER_02: It is, yeah, it's annoying.
- 49:07SPEAKER_02: Also, everything is like if you're not posting two to three times a day, I'm like, do people not have a job?
- 49:13SPEAKER_02: Like when No.
- 49:14SPEAKER_01: Well, I don't, but yeah.
- 49:16SPEAKER_02: Posting two to three times a day, that is that's wild.
- 49:23SPEAKER_01: I just don't have the energy to put into it.
- 49:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I don't think you should.
- 49:28SPEAKER_02: I do ultimately think it's toxic, but but you know, it's dumb and it's and it's fun.
- 49:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 49:37SPEAKER_02: I also think I like your videos.
- 49:39SPEAKER_01: Your videos are so much.
- 49:39SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much.
- 49:40SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much.
- 49:41SPEAKER_02: I think too thinking about anything that is kind of like, you know, relating back to Batman and Robin, I do think in general I like anything that's a little bit of an of an underdog.
- 49:49SPEAKER_02: I think uh anything that people who think that they are high critics of a thing, I don't like that.
- 49:58SPEAKER_02: And I like that are um enjoyable uh, for example, like, you know, um I love um del taco, which is a a chain.
- 50:13SPEAKER_02: And a lot of people don't like delta for many reasons because they're like, it's not authentic Mexican food.
- 50:19SPEAKER_02: I'm like, absolutely not, of course it's not.
- 50:20SPEAKER_02: And then some people are like, well, it's not as good as Taco Bell.
- 50:23SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, you have been brainwashed by society to believe that, by big market.
- 50:27SPEAKER_01: But is Taco Bell even good?
- 50:29SPEAKER_02: No, and that's the thing.
- 50:31SPEAKER_02: And what I would argue is I do think Del Taco is good, and every time I've ever been to a Del Taco, the people that work there are the nicest people I've ever met.
- 50:39SPEAKER_02: And I've never had a bad meal from Del Taco.
- 50:43SPEAKER_02: It's very affordable, it's been there for me when I need it, and I think that's nice, but you know, same thing with pizza.
- 50:49SPEAKER_02: I lived in New York, but you know, occasionally you get a little pizza from Domino's because all you have is five dollars and you can't afford a$25 wood fire pizza.
- 51:02SPEAKER_01: I hate how cheap pizza is in America because Domino's here would cost you so for your$5 pizza, we it would cost like near near on$30 here.
- 51:14SPEAKER_02: $30?
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 51:16SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 51:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, it's different.
- 51:18SPEAKER_02: But people would always be like, how do you eat bad pizza?
- 51:21SPEAKER_02: And I'm like, it doesn't have to, one doesn't have to be bad and one doesn't have to be good, is my point.
- 51:25SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 51:26SPEAKER_02: There doesn't need to be, it's like, let things be what they are.
- 51:29SPEAKER_02: And Batman and Robin, I think people want to make a big deal about it being bad.
- 51:35SPEAKER_02: And it's like that is irrelevant.
- 51:39SPEAKER_02: Did you enjoy it?
- 51:41SPEAKER_01: That's the thing.
- 51:42SPEAKER_01: If you were enjoying it, is it bad if you're enjoying it?
- 51:46SPEAKER_02: No, and I think a lot of people don't want to enjoy things that don't receive critical acclaim.
- 51:54SPEAKER_02: And I think people will pretend to like things that do receive critical acclaim just to pretend to like them.
- 52:02SPEAKER_02: And especially, you know, I'm gonna relate everything back to food because that's my main thing, but especially in food, every almost every fine-dining restaurant I have been to that gets a lot of hype is fine.
- 52:15SPEAKER_02: And every truck I've ever eaten from is delicious.
- 52:20SPEAKER_01: That's the best food I've had.
- 52:22SPEAKER_01: It's from a truck.
- 52:23SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so it's like it everything doesn't need to be this is the best or this is the worst, or that's bad, or this is good.
- 52:30SPEAKER_02: It's like just enjoy it and appreciate it for what it is.
- 52:33SPEAKER_02: And enjoy Batman and Robin for something that feels fun, has incredible costume and lighting and mood, wonderful ambiance, the mise on sen, you know, enjoy that.
- 52:48SPEAKER_01: The misan of Batman and Robin is such a funny.
- 52:50SPEAKER_01: Enjoy that.
- 52:51SPEAKER_01: It's such a funny thought.
- 52:53SPEAKER_02: Well, I don't even know how else to describe it because what is Mise on Sen if not the way fog machines are used in the film Batman and Robin?
- 53:03SPEAKER_01: Very, very good point.
- 53:04SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 53:05SPEAKER_01: They're great in it.
- 53:06SPEAKER_01: They're great in it.
- 53:07SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 53:08SPEAKER_02: Just enjoy those things.
- 53:09SPEAKER_02: Enjoy Batman and Robin as an incredible LGBTQ plus film across the board, you know, showing us lesbians and homosexuals and all of it together, you know?
- 53:23SPEAKER_02: It it it let it be what it is and appreciate it for that, instead of just writing it off as being bad.
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 53:32SPEAKER_01: Great, great point.
- 53:34SPEAKER_01: Thank you.
- 53:35SPEAKER_01: I just want to talk about how um the opening shot is Batman's butt.
- 53:42SPEAKER_02: And if that's not gay, I don't know what is.
- 53:43SPEAKER_02: And that's what I'm saying.
- 53:44SPEAKER_02: Are any of the characters in this movie explicitly gay?
- 53:50SPEAKER_02: No.
- 53:50SPEAKER_02: No, not to our knowledge, but they're also not explicitly straight, right?
- 53:56SPEAKER_02: A lot of these characters are not explicitly straight.
- 53:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, even for example, Robin, we know Robin is attracted to Alicia Silverstone, but that doesn't mean he's straight, right?
- 54:05SPEAKER_02: So I think there's a lot of room.
- 54:07SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of kind of fun sexual ambiance.
- 54:11SPEAKER_02: And I I once again, a poison ivy is gay, right?
- 54:15SPEAKER_02: Like they're I they're they don't say that.
- 54:17SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 54:18SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 54:18SPEAKER_02: Everything she does is in like a purple hue.
- 54:22SPEAKER_02: That's an iconically gay color, right?
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: Um coming from a gay director as well, there's no way he didn't know what he was doing there.
- 54:31SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much.
- 54:32SPEAKER_02: Now, there's a lot of butt stuff, there's a lot of even like there's a lot of weird like nipple stuff, like when she's in that monkey costume.
- 54:39SPEAKER_02: There's a lot of stuff that ought to meat to kind of sink your teeth into when you when you think about it.
- 54:47SPEAKER_02: And I will say that if I'm supposed to look at all these movies that are like, I don't, like, I don't know, if someone can be like, oh, Dumbledore's gay, I'm like, okay, then everyone in this movie is gay, right?
- 55:00SPEAKER_02: Like, if I'm supposed to accept that, I'm I also want you to accept this.
- 55:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 55:08SPEAKER_01: I'll accept that.
- 55:10SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 55:12SPEAKER_01: And uh, yeah, so let's talk about some parts of the movie then as well.
- 55:17SPEAKER_01: We haven't really we've discussed like the overall stuff around it, but we haven't really discussed little parts about it.
- 55:23SPEAKER_01: So like it's yeah, we've talked about Poison Ivor, we've talked uh for a lot, we've kind of talked about Mr.
- 55:30SPEAKER_01: Freeze.
- 55:32SPEAKER_01: Mr.
- 55:32SPEAKER_01: Freeze is just like he He talks in only puns, only one-liner puns.
- 55:41SPEAKER_01: Um played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, who you know, like we know him for his one-liners anyway, so he is like that's why they got him in this.
- 55:49SPEAKER_01: Um I gotta I'm there is one person I read was like another choice another casting choice for Mr.
- 55:57SPEAKER_01: Freeze.
- 55:58SPEAKER_01: Um I can't I've got to find it now because it's ridiculous.
- 56:02SPEAKER_01: Uh I'm probably building it up too much, but it was so it was oh god, there's so much trivia on this movie.
- 56:13SPEAKER_02: I know that David DeCovney was considered for Batman.
- 56:17SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 56:18SPEAKER_01: That's uh that's probably what I'm thinking of.
- 56:20SPEAKER_02: David DeCovney was considered for Batman, and for Poison Ivy, they looked at Sharon Stone and Demi Moore.
- 56:30SPEAKER_02: Oh, Anthony Hopkins.
- 56:32SPEAKER_01: What?
- 56:33SPEAKER_01: Yes, sorry.
- 56:33SPEAKER_01: Wait, what did you find?
- 56:35SPEAKER_01: Hopkins for who Hulk Hogan.
- 56:37SPEAKER_02: Mr.
- 56:37SPEAKER_02: Freeze.
- 56:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 56:38SPEAKER_02: Oh, Hulk Hogan.
- 56:40SPEAKER_02: I mean, Hulk Hogan's bad now, and I know that now, so I don't want that now.
- 56:44SPEAKER_02: But at the time, I also understand that line of thought.
- 56:47SPEAKER_01: I get it, but he would have been so much worse.
- 56:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, absolutely, because Arnold Schwarzenegger is a decent actor and Hulk.
- 56:55SPEAKER_02: But he's the third choice.
- 56:55SPEAKER_01: He was the third choice.
- 56:56SPEAKER_01: So who do wait?
- 56:57SPEAKER_01: Did you say Anthony Hopkins was second choice?
- 57:00SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 57:02SPEAKER_01: That is wild.
- 57:05SPEAKER_02: But I think it's interesting because I think it makes sense they chose Arnold Schwarzenegger because it felt like it felt like they kind of looked at options, right?
- 57:11SPEAKER_02: They were like, do we go with like a highbrow actor like Anthony Hopkins, or do we go with kind of a cartoonish parody of a person, Hulk Hogan?
- 57:21SPEAKER_02: And I think they took those things and put them together, and you get Arnold Schwarzenegger.
- 57:25SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 57:26SPEAKER_01: Well, I think he was always the first choice anyway.
- 57:29SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 57:30SPEAKER_01: But like he he one of his opening things, he's like, the whole thing about him is he can't get hot, but he stands there smoking a cigar.
- 57:40SPEAKER_01: Uh-huh.
- 57:41SPEAKER_01: That's funny.
- 57:42SPEAKER_02: It's that's funny.
- 57:44SPEAKER_01: What is going on?
- 57:45SPEAKER_02: That's so funny.
- 57:50SPEAKER_02: He smokes a cigar.
- 57:51SPEAKER_02: That's so funny, and the way he smokes a cigar, it's so funny.
- 57:55SPEAKER_01: It is, but oh, this movie has no logic.
- 57:59SPEAKER_01: There's no logic to this movie whatsoever.
- 58:02SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 58:04SPEAKER_02: I just I get what you're saying, because I struggle with logic in movies a lot of being like there is no line, there's no like through line of thought.
- 58:13SPEAKER_02: It seems like the people that like wrote this movie like did not speak to each other, so there's there's no world building that makes sense.
- 58:20SPEAKER_02: But I don't think that's true of this movie.
- 58:25SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 58:25SPEAKER_02: Smoking a cigar doesn't make you hot necessarily.
- 58:30SPEAKER_02: It's inhaling smoke.
- 58:34SPEAKER_02: But the is the smoke hot?
- 58:35SPEAKER_02: I don't know what happens to smoke once it goes in your body.
- 58:38SPEAKER_02: Once again, I can't say it enough.
- 58:39SPEAKER_02: I'm not a scientist.
- 58:41SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 58:42SPEAKER_01: But also, like the one other one other thing about this movie was it was supposed so the movie before this, um Batman Returns not Batman Returns, Batman Forever.
- 58:52SPEAKER_01: That was supposed to be Batman and Robin.
- 58:55SPEAKER_01: And Robin was supposed to be played by Marlon Wayans, and then he got dropped from here.
- 59:01SPEAKER_02: I would have loved that.
- 59:03SPEAKER_02: I think that would be a lot better.
- 59:06SPEAKER_01: I want to see that movie.
- 59:07SPEAKER_01: But then so the story from that and the story from this got reversed.
- 59:12SPEAKER_02: That's so interesting.
- 59:14SPEAKER_02: I did not know that.
- 59:16SPEAKER_02: I would have liked it with Marlon Wayans.
- 59:18SPEAKER_02: I love him.
- 59:20SPEAKER_01: That would have been such an interesting movie as well.
- 59:22SPEAKER_01: He wasn't big at the time.
- 59:24SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think that would have been so fun.
- 59:26SPEAKER_02: Why not?
- 59:28SPEAKER_01: I don't know.
- 59:28SPEAKER_01: But but they're also both Joel Schumacher movies.
- 59:32SPEAKER_01: But they're also they feel very different.
- 59:36SPEAKER_01: This is so much more this is more camp than that.
- 59:38SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 59:40SPEAKER_01: And it's very interesting to see that.
- 59:42SPEAKER_01: Um so the other character I want to talk about is well foot Robin is such a non-entity, we can just like I don't care about him whatsoever.
- 59:51SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he's forgettable, absolutely.
- 59:54SPEAKER_01: Chris O'Donnell killed his career.
- 59:57SPEAKER_01: Yes, um, but the other character, Alicia Silverstone, as Batgirl, as they call her, or Barbara, um Alfred's niece.
- 1:00:09SPEAKER_01: She shows up, she's like in a schoolgirl outfit.
- 1:00:13SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_02: How old is she supposed to be?
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_01: Unclear, but she's gone to they say she's gone to Oxbridge, so like she's gonna be in her like at least 18 then.
- 1:00:25SPEAKER_02: So she's in college.
- 1:00:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's but she's like a dropout, isn't she?
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_02: I guess.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she racing.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_02: I think they say she got kicked out for racing motorcycles?
- 1:00:36SPEAKER_01: For racing motor.
- 1:00:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:00:39SPEAKER_01: That's the other thing.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_01: It's like she's half she's half like that they don't know her tone.
- 1:00:44SPEAKER_01: They don't know whether to go with like she's this good girl, innocent girl, or she's like actually a badass.
- 1:00:53SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 1:00:54SPEAKER_02: I mean, they did little to no character development on her whatsoever whatsoever, and her i it doesn't yeah, she doesn't she doesn't make sense, and that's unfortunate.
- 1:01:07SPEAKER_02: I think there was a lot of room where she could have they could have done a lot more with her.
- 1:01:12SPEAKER_02: But when you really think about it, there are so many characters in this movie.
- 1:01:20SPEAKER_02: Like there's two villains.
- 1:01:24SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a problem, and that's a thing that Spider-Man 3 didn't learn.
- 1:01:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:01:28SPEAKER_02: There's Batman and Robin, then there's two villains, then we got Alfred, who we already know.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, then we have Batgirl.
- 1:01:38SPEAKER_02: It's just two.
- 1:01:39SPEAKER_02: So so I feel like we kind of get a glossing over of almost everyone.
- 1:01:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_02: But I do feel like they spent the most time with the villains, and that doesn't bother me.
- 1:01:48SPEAKER_01: No, I agree.
- 1:01:49SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, so what I think the problem is, is that they had it's the introduction of so many characters.
- 1:01:55SPEAKER_01: So they introduce so first of all, we have to get on board with a new Batman.
- 1:02:01SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 1:02:02SPEAKER_02: I'm fine.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_01: We can do that.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:03SPEAKER_01: That's fine.
- 1:02:04SPEAKER_01: Robin, new character.
- 1:02:07SPEAKER_01: Don't know, we don't know.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_01: We know Robin, but we don't know the backstory for Robin here.
- 1:02:12SPEAKER_00: Sure.
- 1:02:15SPEAKER_01: Waste the character.
- 1:02:16SPEAKER_01: Don't need him in it.
- 1:02:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:02:18SPEAKER_01: Batgirl, don't need her in it.
- 1:02:20SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 1:02:22SPEAKER_01: Keep the two villains, get rid of the bat, get rid of Robin, get rid of Batgirl.
- 1:02:25SPEAKER_02: Agreed.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_01: Better movie.
- 1:02:27SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 1:02:28SPEAKER_02: I I agree.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_02: I, you know, there was supposed to be a sequel of this movie.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:33SPEAKER_02: So I will give it the benefit of the doubt and say maybe they were already planning the sequel.
- 1:02:37SPEAKER_02: And I I don't think that's a good film strategy to be like we'll plan on there being a sequel and then we'll do the work in the sequel or whatever.
- 1:02:45SPEAKER_02: Like, that's not good.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:02:46SPEAKER_02: But I'll, you know, I'll cut them a little sack and say maybe they were hoping to do more with Batman and or excuse me, Robin and Batgirl in the sequel.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_01: I think they were counting on merchandise.
- 1:02:58SPEAKER_02: Oh, well, absolutely.
- 1:03:00SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 1:03:01SPEAKER_01: I think Batgirl is merchandise.
- 1:03:04SPEAKER_02: 100%.
- 1:03:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I didn't I I didn't need her.
- 1:03:09SPEAKER_01: I think it's pandering.
- 1:03:11SPEAKER_02: Sure.
- 1:03:13SPEAKER_02: But is this the only movie that's ever pandered?
- 1:03:16SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:03:17SPEAKER_02: No.
- 1:03:18SPEAKER_01: I'm just saying I think Batgirl is pandering.
- 1:03:20SPEAKER_02: No, I I agree.
- 1:03:21SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think it's all I think any comic book movie is pandering.
- 1:03:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:03:29SPEAKER_02: If you think that this is pandering, but if you don't think the Marvel cinematic universe Oh, that scene.
- 1:03:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a good thing.
- 1:03:37SPEAKER_01: You know the scene I'm talking about.
- 1:03:40SPEAKER_02: It's all just for merchandise.
- 1:03:42SPEAKER_02: So but once again, I'm like, why is that movie?
- 1:03:45SPEAKER_02: I don't think that this movie is worse than some of the Marvel movies.
- 1:03:53SPEAKER_01: It's better than Thor 2.
- 1:03:55SPEAKER_02: Oh, I think it's better than Thor 2.
- 1:03:56SPEAKER_02: I think it's better than Ant-Man 2.
- 1:03:58SPEAKER_02: I think it's better than the first Avengers movie.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_01: I think it's Oh, that's sorry.
- 1:04:05SPEAKER_01: I think it's I might give I might give you Avengers 2.
- 1:04:10SPEAKER_02: I think I liked Avengers 2 more.
- 1:04:13SPEAKER_02: But also they all they've all become conflated in my mind because they're just you know they're just one big thing.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_02: But I think that this movie is better than a lot of those movies.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_02: Ant-Man 2 was bad.
- 1:04:26SPEAKER_01: I liked Ant Man 2, but I get I get that.
- 1:04:29SPEAKER_02: Ant-Man 2.
- 1:04:30SPEAKER_01: I like it as a standalone.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_01: I don't like it as like within the universe.
- 1:04:35SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_02: I feel the opposite.
- 1:04:37SPEAKER_02: I'm like, okay, I get why someone would buy into this if they're already into the universe, but like as a standalone movie, like this is bad.
- 1:04:42SPEAKER_02: And I just think that yeah, a lot a lot of those movies, they're all just for merchandise.
- 1:04:49SPEAKER_02: And I think it, you know, it is what it is.
- 1:04:51SPEAKER_02: But once again, this movie getting penalized for that when there are so many movies that are.
- 1:04:56SPEAKER_01: I'm not penalizing the movie.
- 1:04:57SPEAKER_01: I'm penalizing.
- 1:04:58SPEAKER_02: You're coming for my movie.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_01: And I'm coming for your movie, I'm sorry.
- 1:05:02SPEAKER_02: I need to defend it.
- 1:05:03SPEAKER_01: I brought you on here to defend it, so.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_01: And you're doing you're doing a good job.
- 1:05:07SPEAKER_01: You're bringing you're bringing you are bringing me around on it.
- 1:05:09SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much.
- 1:05:10SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much.
- 1:05:12SPEAKER_01: Um there there is one line though.
- 1:05:14SPEAKER_01: Like, they the one thing I was talking about with the pandering is that they have when Poison Ivy and Batgirl get into the fight, uh Batgirl says to Poison Ivy, chicks like you give women a bad name.
- 1:05:30SPEAKER_01: And I disagree.
- 1:05:32SPEAKER_02: I disagree too.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_02: But I think that all the dialogue in that scene does feel like um lesbian porn, right?
- 1:05:38SPEAKER_02: A lot of that is like, what are you even like what it's just like it's just sexy, and it does we're not even there for the dialogue.
- 1:05:44SPEAKER_02: And it's like, you know, it's it's all like who cares?
- 1:05:48SPEAKER_02: They're fighting and it's hot.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_02: And I think that's is that your favorite scene?
- 1:05:54SPEAKER_02: No, my favorite scene is when Poison Ivy first comes to life is poison ivy.
- 1:05:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that is a great scene.
- 1:05:59SPEAKER_02: Because you're not I've seen it and it has to be.
- 1:06:04SPEAKER_02: Oh my god.
- 1:06:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it feels crazy.
- 1:06:06SPEAKER_02: But and the funny is like chicks give women chicks like you give women a bad name.
- 1:06:11SPEAKER_02: I'm like, well, what else is she gonna say?
- 1:06:13SPEAKER_02: Like what she's gonna say something interesting.
- 1:06:17SPEAKER_02: I don't care.
- 1:06:18SPEAKER_02: Like what this is not a moment for, in my opinion, for thought-provoking dialogue.
- 1:06:26SPEAKER_02: And if that was forced into this moment, I think that would feel equally bad.
- 1:06:31SPEAKER_02: I think a movie that's not that's not interest, not not interesting, but a movie that we want to treat everything now like it is intellectual.
- 1:06:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:06:45SPEAKER_02: And I think that's unnecessary, and I think a lot of times that's fabricated.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:06:49SPEAKER_02: Something can just be fun and silly and enjoyable.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_02: And it's like, that's how I feel about that dialogue.
- 1:06:56SPEAKER_02: I'm like, yeah, it's like a fight, you know.
- 1:06:58SPEAKER_02: It reminds me of like the original Scooby-Doo cartoon.
- 1:07:02SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:07:04SPEAKER_02: When you watch that, you're not like, this dialogue is so fun.
- 1:07:10SPEAKER_01: We don't have that anymore, though.
- 1:07:11SPEAKER_01: I think we had it in the 60s, we had it in the 90s.
- 1:07:13SPEAKER_01: I think we're do we're due like another round of it again.
- 1:07:17SPEAKER_02: I hope so.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_02: I like it.
- 1:07:18SPEAKER_02: I think it's I think it's fun.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_02: And I think it it produces this kind of like when you don't have it, it produces such a level of like pseudo-intellectualism where it's just like we're pretending like everything is smart when it's not.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_02: And I think so so much of things are we've now I don't know, built our whole society around these things of like being smart.
- 1:07:44SPEAKER_02: You know, I saw a TikTok, which is the smartest way to start a sentence.
- 1:07:48SPEAKER_02: I saw TikTok about how people were people being praised as children for being smart.
- 1:07:54SPEAKER_02: So you think that that is something inherently ingrained in who you are.
- 1:07:59SPEAKER_02: So if you don't understand something immediately or learn something quickly, it makes you doubt your whole sense of self because you're like, well, I'm smart, I should be getting this, instead of putting more emphasis on like learning, like things can be learned or whatever.
- 1:08:13SPEAKER_02: So I think we put so much emphasis on being smart or being, you know, whatever.
- 1:08:19SPEAKER_02: It's like, no, it doesn't, not everything has to be smart, and smartness can be learned, and smartness can come in many different forms.
- 1:08:27SPEAKER_02: Something, you know, I think once again, I think there's a lot of why is the master smart?
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_02: I'll bring us back to one of my least favorite movies.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_02: What what about the master is smart?
- 1:08:40SPEAKER_01: I have never seen it.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_02: Good.
- 1:08:43SPEAKER_02: I'll say it.
- 1:08:44SPEAKER_02: And people, you know, maybe people listen to this podcast and they'll come for me, but I'm like, okay, we're using like No, I don't think they will because I I I think anyone that listens to this podcast agrees with you.
- 1:08:53SPEAKER_02: Oh my god, okay.
- 1:08:54SPEAKER_01: I think that's the point of the that's the point of this podcast.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_01: Oh, thank God.
- 1:08:57SPEAKER_01: Okay, I agree with you.
- 1:08:59SPEAKER_02: I'm praying for that because when I look, I'm like, okay, the master has like highbrow actors that are acting in realism.
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_02: Yeah, the dialogue is realism, the setting is realism.
- 1:09:10SPEAKER_02: Okay, all that's fine.
- 1:09:12SPEAKER_02: You it is what it is, but also there's something about uh doing something that's not realism that's also very cool and impressive and different, yeah, and fun and and has merit in its own way, and it's not easy either.
- 1:09:31SPEAKER_01: Like it seems like it would be easy.
- 1:09:33SPEAKER_01: It's not easy to do this sort of thing.
- 1:09:35SPEAKER_01: It's it's a lot funny.
- 1:09:36SPEAKER_02: And I think, yeah, and I think doing something where it's like, you know, yeah, you might have to actively try to not laugh at yourself because you know it's silly.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_02: And to me, that's also like, you know, yeah, you're really having to like double down and commit to a character that you might not have as much backstory or as much uh relatability to this character as someone who's acting in something that is just like full-on realism, has a full-on backstory and fleshed out character.
- 1:10:04SPEAKER_02: I think that can be just as hard.
- 1:10:06SPEAKER_02: Like one note that I got in acting school that I thought was really interesting is that you know, if you're auditioning for a Will a Will Smith movie where you'll you're brought on to be the pilot, that your line is like, we're going down, and you say it to Will Smith.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_02: If you come in and you're like, here's my backstory, and I have two children and these are their names and blah, blah, it's like that's too much.
- 1:10:26SPEAKER_02: You're doing too much, and you're not gonna book that role.
- 1:10:28SPEAKER_02: But if you're not doing what's necessary for that specific role, you're there because Will Smith is the star of the movie, and all you need to do is be a pilot.
- 1:10:40SPEAKER_02: And I thought that that was so interesting because it's like, yeah, if you're bringing what you think of as like, like, I think like Juilliard level acting for a lot of people is like delivering a Hamlet soliloquy.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_02: And it's like, it is if you're doing Hamlet and you're playing Hamlet, but also maybe sometimes you're doing a kid's TV show that is requesting other things of you, or you're doing a silly m movie.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_02: You know, if you look at like stuff that John Waters has made where they're all friends and they're making stuff that is so outrageous, it's like that takes a whole nother level of commitment.
- 1:11:21SPEAKER_01: It's a it is a commitment.
- 1:11:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so I think you'll enjoy this.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_01: I got I I found a quote from Uma Thurman.
- 1:11:30SPEAKER_01: Not quite, but like a thing I think she said about this movie.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_01: She said it's I would love to hear it.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_01: Uma Thurman felt the campy and farcial farcical tone fit the film, enjoyed the creative license she was given in regards to her character, and credits it as less of a curricula and more of her first experience of a high-budget blockbuster.
- 1:11:49SPEAKER_01: She doesn't see it as bad.
- 1:11:51SPEAKER_02: That's awesome! That's so awesome.
- 1:11:53SPEAKER_02: And I feel that way about so many movies.
- 1:11:55SPEAKER_02: Like, I know like Susan Sarandon has said a lot of bad stuff about like Rocky Horror Picture Show and that not being like but I think at the time she was like, I want to be doing more like high-level Oscar-winning stuff.
- 1:12:10SPEAKER_02: And as we've seen time and time again, that's what people are striving for.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_02: The Oscars are bad.
- 1:12:14SPEAKER_02: The Oscars are bad, the bad idiots, right?
- 1:12:18SPEAKER_02: Like, we know that.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_02: We see that time and time again.
- 1:12:20SPEAKER_02: The Golden Globes are bad idiots, but we're still striving for that.
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_02: Instead of like, yeah, to hear like kind of an unconventionally attractive woman be like, I was given a lot of creative license in this film, that's awesome to me.
- 1:12:38SPEAKER_02: I I love that.
- 1:12:40SPEAKER_01: And I think it's better than like slating the movie because uh Yeah, I don't know.
- 1:12:46SPEAKER_01: Like George Clooney just goes, oh, he only talks badly about it.
- 1:12:50SPEAKER_01: He only talks badly about it.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_01: And he goes, he'll go around and like refund.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_01: If someone says to him, I've seen I've seen it, he will his joke is to like give them their money back.
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_02: Why?
- 1:13:01SPEAKER_02: He's done a bunch of bad stuff.
- 1:13:04SPEAKER_02: This is done a bunch of bad stuff.
- 1:13:06SPEAKER_01: This is better than like a load of things he's done.
- 1:13:10SPEAKER_02: Yes, this is more fun than I'm going to his to his IMDB page and I'm seeing what else he's doing.
- 1:13:17SPEAKER_01: This is definitely more fun than things he's done.
- 1:13:19SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_02: I just I'm yeah, sorry, George Clooney is in an uh an extended S Nespresso commercial.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_01: Like Yeah, that's what I'm looking at as well.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_02: I don't think he's been in more than one Nespresso short film.
- 1:13:39SPEAKER_01: One, two, three, four, five.
- 1:13:41SPEAKER_01: I've got six.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_02: Many, many, many, many.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_02: So I'm like, I really am not interested, sir.
- 1:13:47SPEAKER_02: I'm not really interested in that, you know, or I just think people, yeah, there's so much emphasis put on like being critically acclaimed, and people really mess up.
- 1:13:58SPEAKER_02: Like, I know Joseph Gordon Levitt was like really embarrassed about 10 things I hate about you for a really long time until it started, yeah, because he wanted to be doing more like high brow.
- 1:14:09SPEAKER_01: Oh, come on.
- 1:14:10SPEAKER_02: High brow stuff that was once.
- 1:14:12SPEAKER_01: You can do both.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_02: You can do both.
- 1:14:15SPEAKER_02: And also, like, why is one better than the other?
- 1:14:17SPEAKER_02: Like, what about 10 Things I Hate About You is Low Brow?
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_02: It's a great movie.
- 1:14:21SPEAKER_02: But now, now that it's gotten more of like, you know, people are so infatuated with it and it's done so well, uh, now he he likes it.
- 1:14:28SPEAKER_02: So I think, you know, actors have a lot of pressure put on themselves in that way, which I don't necessarily blame them for.
- 1:14:35SPEAKER_02: But, you know, I'm like, yeah, George Clooney, you were on ER.
- 1:14:40SPEAKER_02: Like, you've been in all these Nespresso commercials.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_01: You, you know Well, this was known as a this movie was known as a career killer, except for for George Clooney, who like supposedly made it out of it fine.
- 1:14:54SPEAKER_02: Um, Chris O'Donnell.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_01: Chris O Chris O'Donnell.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_02: Uma Thurman's.
- 1:15:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:15:02SPEAKER_01: Well, Alicia Steverstein kind of like didn't have a huge career after this.
- 1:15:06SPEAKER_02: But I also think she's taken a shift, right?
- 1:15:08SPEAKER_02: Like, she's very into like wellness and being vegan and her children, like, which I think is fine and great.
- 1:15:14SPEAKER_02: I think if something being a cr a a career killer, I mean, yeah, Uma Thurman has had so much uh uh success.
- 1:15:22SPEAKER_01: She's done loads.
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_02: She's an icon.
- 1:15:24SPEAKER_01: I mean, Kill Bill wasn't that much later than like that much on from this, and then from and after Kill Bill, she's just like yeah, she's fine.
- 1:15:33SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she's done incredible.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_02: I'm looking at everything she's done after this, and it's yeah, I mean, what I I don't know.
- 1:15:44SPEAKER_02: I just don't have the beef with this movie.
- 1:15:47SPEAKER_01: And also Chris O'Donnell has been in like uh what is it, NCIS or one of those shows.
- 1:15:52SPEAKER_01: NCIS LA.
- 1:15:53SPEAKER_01: He's been in in it since 2009.
- 1:15:56SPEAKER_02: That's awesome!
- 1:15:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 271 episodes.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_01: He's like, he's fine.
- 1:16:01SPEAKER_02: Yeah, like they're all fine.
- 1:16:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and once you're gonna be able to do it is fine.
- 1:16:06SPEAKER_02: I I think people get upset because they're like, oh, well, I'm not gonna win an Oscar.
- 1:16:10SPEAKER_02: And it's like, well, who cares?
- 1:16:11SPEAKER_02: I understand that having an Oscar can get you more money in films movies.
- 1:16:15SPEAKER_02: I understand all of the practical things about it, but I also think we need to start taking away the power of these award shows that are bad and sexist and racist and don't give awards to anyone that falls outside of a very specific binary, you know.
- 1:16:34SPEAKER_02: It's I we need to take away the power from those things.
- 1:16:38SPEAKER_02: And I I think it starts with the fans, but it's like, yeah, Chris O'Donnell has been in a ton of TV shows.
- 1:16:45SPEAKER_02: Yeah, which is great.
- 1:16:48SPEAKER_02: He was on the practice, he was on Grey's Anatomy.
- 1:16:52SPEAKER_01: Fine.
- 1:16:53SPEAKER_02: He was on NCIS.
- 1:16:56SPEAKER_01: Okay, he didn't have this like movie star career, but who cares?
- 1:17:00SPEAKER_01: Like, you're fine.
- 1:17:01SPEAKER_01: You want to do like you can still do that.
- 1:17:04SPEAKER_02: It doesn't it doesn't matter.
- 1:17:09SPEAKER_02: And Uma Thurman's worked a ton.
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_00: I'm just Uma Thurman just asked.
- 1:17:14SPEAKER_02: Uma therman has two Yeah, and she has two movies coming out that are soon.
- 1:17:20SPEAKER_02: You know, it's like uh good for her, let her live, uh let all these people, you know, all these people are absolutely all these people are still rich.
- 1:17:29SPEAKER_02: I'll say that much.
- 1:17:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:17:32SPEAKER_01: You get 271 episodes of a show in syndication, you are rich.
- 1:17:38SPEAKER_02: Yeah, none of these people are not okay.
- 1:17:40SPEAKER_02: So to call it a career killer, I think, is absolutely unhidden.
- 1:17:44SPEAKER_01: Um, so alright, so let's move on to the final segment then, and you're gonna you are gonna have some interesting ones, I feel like, for this.
- 1:17:52SPEAKER_01: Do you have a movie that is the reverse of this?
- 1:17:55SPEAKER_01: Sorry?
- 1:17:57SPEAKER_01: What are you saying?
- 1:17:58SPEAKER_02: Oh, I just I just said I can't wait.
- 1:18:00SPEAKER_01: Oh, I thought you said I doubt it.
- 1:18:02SPEAKER_02: Oh, no, no, no.
- 1:18:04SPEAKER_01: No, um, okay, so do you have a movie that's the reverse of this, which is the um is critically acclaimed and well loved by people that you think is bad?
- 1:18:16SPEAKER_02: Absolutely.
- 1:18:16SPEAKER_02: I mean, I've kind of popped off about this throughout the episode.
- 1:18:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_02: But I do.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_02: I I don't like Paul Thomas Anderson.
- 1:18:23SPEAKER_02: I think sure there are some, you know, yeah, like punch up glove is enjoyable, Boogie Knights is enjoyable, but all in all, the hype all of that gets is really unappealing.
- 1:18:33SPEAKER_00: It's very film pro, isn't it?
- 1:18:36SPEAKER_02: Oh, absolutely.
- 1:18:37SPEAKER_02: I mean, I remember in college when I went and saw The Master with all my friends in film on 35mm or whatever they were playing it on at this fancy movie theater because we're like$30.
- 1:18:51SPEAKER_02: I fell asleep.
- 1:18:52SPEAKER_02: I was just, and I I think a lot of critically acclaimed movies ultimately are like about bad men, which just like does not appeal to me.
- 1:19:01SPEAKER_02: So I don't like the math.
- 1:19:03SPEAKER_02: I don't like Paul Thomas Anderson, I don't like Noah Bomback, anything by them I'm really not a fan of.
- 1:19:10SPEAKER_02: Um uh I don't really like anything by Sophia Coppola.
- 1:19:15SPEAKER_02: I think her work is very, very boring and very aesthetic, which once again, I'm like, there is a place for that.
- 1:19:21SPEAKER_02: I think if you just want to make ambient movies that are essentially paintings, yeah, great.
- 1:19:29SPEAKER_02: Do I find that her movies are boring and incredibly white?
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:19:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's one issue I have with them.
- 1:19:36SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that is unappealing to me.
- 1:19:40SPEAKER_02: Um, so yeah, The Master, Marie Antoinette, Inherent Vice.
- 1:19:46SPEAKER_02: Oh, you know what?
- 1:19:47SPEAKER_02: This is actually a good one that people might not expect.
- 1:19:49SPEAKER_02: All the other ones kind of make sense for me.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_02: But you know what I really don't like that everyone else liked?
- 1:19:54SPEAKER_01: What's that?
- 1:19:55SPEAKER_02: It follows.
- 1:19:57SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:19:58SPEAKER_02: Which I think is a shame.
- 1:19:59SPEAKER_01: Because it's a nice horror movie.
- 1:20:01SPEAKER_02: It's it's a it's a uh aesthetically pleasing horror movie that is female driven.
- 1:20:05SPEAKER_02: So I think a lot of people felt like a lot of people felt like I should like it.
- 1:20:09SPEAKER_02: What a crazy statement.
- 1:20:10SPEAKER_02: I think if someone that's not true at all.
- 1:20:13SPEAKER_02: But I think if someone heard, what is Jordan thinking?
- 1:20:16SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 1:20:17SPEAKER_02: People are clamoring to know my thoughts.
- 1:20:19SPEAKER_02: Um, but when when my friends or people that I'm talking to movies about find out that I didn't like it follows, that really surprises them.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_01: It is surprising, yeah.
- 1:20:27SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 1:20:27SPEAKER_02: And what I will say is something we talked about earlier.
- 1:20:31SPEAKER_02: I found that logically the movie had almost no through line, and there were so many holes in the plot line, in the consistency of how the quote-unquote monsters work, all of that to me just lacked an incredible amount of sense that I felt like could have pretty easily been built into the film.
- 1:20:58SPEAKER_02: And the fact that they didn't take the time with that felt frustrating to me.
- 1:21:02SPEAKER_02: So It Follows is a critically acclaimed film.
- 1:21:04SPEAKER_02: And and once again, if people were like, oh, I just like this because it's it's stylized and it's fun.
- 1:21:10SPEAKER_02: I think it is styled beautifully.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_02: I think it has some fun moments, I think the acting is fine.
- 1:21:15SPEAKER_02: But in terms of the hype that it gets, I still get a lot of hype.
- 1:21:19SPEAKER_02: Oh, I especially compared to other It's on every list.
- 1:21:22SPEAKER_02: Every list everybody loves it, and I I really that's a tough nut to crack for me.
- 1:21:27SPEAKER_02: I really, really don't.
- 1:21:29SPEAKER_02: I think the concept is so interesting, but I don't understand the hype around the movie itself.
- 1:21:36SPEAKER_01: Cool.
- 1:21:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:21:37SPEAKER_01: I I enjoy the movie, but I don't, yeah, I I think it's overrated.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 1:21:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:21:43SPEAKER_01: Uh okay, cool.
- 1:21:45SPEAKER_01: Do you have any um final thoughts on um Batman and Robin that you that we've forgotten to talk about?
- 1:21:50SPEAKER_02: I think it's a nearly perfect movie.
- 1:21:52SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 1:21:53SPEAKER_01: That is such a strong statement.
- 1:21:54SPEAKER_02: And if you don't like the movie, you're homophobic.
- 1:21:56SPEAKER_02: That's what I'll say.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_02: That's what I want all of you to take away from this.
- 1:21:59SPEAKER_02: It's a nearly perfect movie if you don't like it, you're homophobic.
- 1:22:01SPEAKER_02: Um that's what I'll no, I uh my big my big takeaway, hopefully, from this, and something I've been sitting with a lot of my feelings about film is let's be okay having fun with entertainment.
- 1:22:18SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_01: That's why I wanted to make this podcast because I want for people to come on and talk about movies they enjoy that people might not necessarily enjoy.
- 1:22:27SPEAKER_02: I love that.
- 1:22:28SPEAKER_02: I hope someone re-watches Batman and Robin with a new lens after this movie.
- 1:22:32SPEAKER_02: If you do, please reach out to me on Instagram or Twitter or whatever.
- 1:22:35SPEAKER_02: I'd love to talk to you about it.
- 1:22:37SPEAKER_01: Please go make a Batman and Robin TikTok video.
- 1:22:40SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 1:22:42SPEAKER_01: Okay, cool.
- 1:22:43SPEAKER_01: So uh how can we find you online?
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_01: And do you have anything you want to promote at the moment?
- 1:22:47SPEAKER_02: The big thing that I want to promote is I have a Top Chef talk show that is every yes, thank you so much.
- 1:22:54SPEAKER_02: It's every Tuesday live on YouTube.
- 1:22:57SPEAKER_02: It is with my co-host and good friend Reka Schonker and former guest.
- 1:23:01SPEAKER_02: Yes, former guest, and and great person, very funny.
- 1:23:05SPEAKER_02: And we watch episodes of Top Chef and talk about them with guests who have been different comedians, top chef contestants and winners, food bloggers, chefs.
- 1:23:14SPEAKER_02: We've got all different types of people, and we do it to raise money for different food-based charities.
- 1:23:20SPEAKER_02: So you can check that out.
- 1:23:21SPEAKER_02: And then I am across all platforms: Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, whatever, at J-O-R-D-A-N, M-Y-R-1-C-K.
- 1:23:31SPEAKER_02: So my name with a one instead of an I in the last name to be a little unnecessarily confusing.
- 1:23:37SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 1:23:38SPEAKER_01: Well, thank you so much for coming on, Jordan.
- 1:23:39SPEAKER_02: Thank you so much for having me.
- 1:23:40SPEAKER_02: This was an absolute blast.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_01: It's been great.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_01: You actually like kind of changed my mind on Batman and Robbie like.
- 1:23:46SPEAKER_02: Yes! Oh, I love that.
- 1:23:47SPEAKER_02: I absolutely love that.
- 1:23:50SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:23:50SPEAKER_01: Well, I'll speak to you soon.
- 1:23:52SPEAKER_02: Yes, thank you.
- 1:23:54SPEAKER_01: That's the end of the podcast.
- 1:23:55SPEAKER_01: If you enjoyed it, please leave us a review and not a liking sub and making more episodes.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_01: And I'll see you next week for more movies.
