- 0:06Hello, what's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:10Well, it's Mudblood and beer. Sweet Jesus.
- 0:14Welcome to What's your least Favorite scary Movie?
- 0:16The podcast where we talk about the good, the bad, the ugly and
- 0:19the absurd in all of our. Favorite and least favorite
- 0:21scary movie Because we believe every horror movie rightfully
- 0:24has its fan base. Even if we don't.
- 0:26Always get it? My name is Travis.
- 0:27My name's Jesse. And welcome back, everybody.
- 0:30We are digging deep into The Cave today.
- 0:35Yeah, that's right. Because we're going caving.
- 0:37We're going down under. We are.
- 0:40Yeah. Spelunking how?
- 0:41Often do we get to use the word spelunking on this podcast?
- 0:44Not often enough, I say. That's true.
- 0:46I think that's that's the first for this podcast.
- 0:49You guys are experiencing a very first.
- 0:51We're talking about the descent today, everybody.
- 0:53Yay. This has been a long time coming
- 0:56on the show. We've, you know, we've had a lot
- 0:58of people request this one, so we figured, damn it, let's do
- 1:01it. Yeah, it it didn't help that we
- 1:03also recently watched Fall, which feels almost like a
- 1:06spiritual sequel to this movie in a lot of ways.
- 1:09Up and set it down. Yeah, yeah.
- 1:11Well, then, down again. Then down, you know but same as
- 1:16this movie, down but then up. And then down.
- 1:19Again, we go all the directions. So yeah, we're going to be
- 1:23talking about that. But before we do, do we have any
- 1:26announcements? We have a couple of
- 1:28announcements. First is that by this point,
- 1:31budget tier patrons, you should have had your vote in for the
- 1:34September movie that should be posted and you should have
- 1:37gotten it voted because it's almost September.
- 1:40And also, your bonus episode should be out as long as nothing
- 1:44changes between when we record this and when we record that we
- 1:47are playing a game where we see how good our memories are about
- 1:53our own show. Yeah.
- 1:54So that that we're, we're looking forward to it.
- 1:58Exploring episodes of the past in a way.
- 2:01In a way. Yeah, that's a good time.
- 2:03So be on the lookout for that. And also this week we are guests
- 2:06on another podcast, Attack of the Killer Objects.
- 2:09If you just didn't get enough of listening to us talk about
- 2:12Child's Play Two last month, have No Fear.
- 2:15That is what we're discussing on Attack of the Killer Objects, so
- 2:18we'll be sure to put a link to that in our show notes right
- 2:21below, so check that out if you wanna go listen to that.
- 2:25Yeah, it's a good time. Fun times.
- 2:26Yes. All right.
- 2:28I think that's it for announcements.
- 2:29I do think that's it for announcements.
- 2:31So I have our poll results, OK. And last week we discussed
- 2:38Child's Play 3. There you go.
- 2:39Yeah, yeah. Yeah, we did a different child's
- 2:41play. Yeah, so much child's play.
- 2:42Yeah, and we talked about over the top characters and that.
- 2:47So we wanted to know who was the most over the top character in
- 2:51Child's Play Three. And it's between Sergeant
- 2:54Botnick, who was the Barber and Chucky.
- 2:57So Instagram, 83% voted for Botnick.
- 3:01Wow, 17 Chucky and Twitter, 70% Botnick and 30 for Chucky.
- 3:06OK so yeah I mean I I agree. I think he is a more cartoonish
- 3:12character than the killer doll. Maybe that's what inspires
- 3:15Chucky going forward. Like he hears that guy say,
- 3:17presto, you bald. And he's like, you know what?
- 3:20Damn, I need my own thing. Yeah, don't fuck with the Chuck.
- 3:23OK, there. There we go.
- 3:25It works. Yeah, it needs to be workshop a
- 3:27little. Bit we'll, we'll get there.
- 3:30Yeah, Yeah. I was trying to think of the
- 3:32word where they you have focus group, we'll focus group.
- 3:38Yeah, we'll focus groups. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:40And that's probably what he does.
- 3:42Like, Yeah, it's like a legion of good guy does.
- 3:44Like before he kills people, he's like, now listen, what
- 3:47would you rather hear me? Saying yeah, it doesn't pull,
- 3:50just like us. Yeah, exactly.
- 3:52Exactly. OK, that's it.
- 3:54Yeah. So let's talk about the descent.
- 3:58All right, so The Descent originally released March 11th,
- 4:022005 at the Brussels International Fantastic Film
- 4:07Fest. Yeah, putting it all right out
- 4:10there. It's at wide release.
- 4:12Was August 4th, 2006. My birthday?
- 4:16Yeah. Happy birthday to Travis on my
- 4:1914th birthday. Yeah.
- 4:20Yeah. I didn't watch it then.
- 4:23Oh OK, well I still happy birthday to 14 year.
- 4:26Old Yeah, I, I did. I watched it like a year or two
- 4:28after that. So yeah, I, I got there.
- 4:31We watched it this year, though, on Prime.
- 4:34And if you want to watch it right now, it's available August
- 4:39of 2024 on Prime, Hoopla, or Phoebe.
- 4:43OK, those are words. I suppose, yeah.
- 4:48What's that? Hoopla.
- 4:49Hoopla is a streaming service. Like in the US.
- 4:55Yeah, I think so. I think it's like related to
- 4:56your library. That's Canopy.
- 4:58But I think also Hoopla does the same thing.
- 5:00OK. Yeah, Dude, we're in the age of
- 5:03streaming services. You don't question them.
- 5:05Now. We were talking with some
- 5:07friends last week and we discovered that there is a Kung
- 5:09Fu streaming service called Hiya.
- 5:10Hiya. Yeah, love that.
- 5:13I do too. Yeah.
- 5:14So hoopla. Yeah, OK.
- 5:16Fair enough. You can rent it on Amazon,
- 5:18Apple, YouTube, or Fandango at home, though, if you choose to
- 5:21do so. Written by Neil Marshall.
- 5:25Also directed by Neil Marshall, music by David Julian and
- 5:29special effects makeup by Paul Hyatt.
- 5:32OK. Cast we have Seanan McDonald who
- 5:36plays Sarah, Natalie Mendoza as Juno, Alex Reed as Beth, Saskia
- 5:41Mulder as Rebecca, Miana burning as or Burning as Sam, Nora Jane,
- 5:48Noon as Holly, Oliver Milburn as Paul, and Molly Kale as Jessica.
- 5:55OK, time for our favorite game on the show.
- 5:58Budget all budgeted. I feel like generally I I tend
- 6:05to lean towards single location movies being more on the bug Ted
- 6:09side because that is one of the great things about a single
- 6:13location is that they tend to be cheaper to film.
- 6:15I wouldn't call a single location.
- 6:18I mean, yes, a cave is large, but it's still a single cave.
- 6:22Yeah, but it's like calling a highway single location.
- 6:27Like if we're doing like Texas Chainsaw Massacre Three or The
- 6:30Hitcher. Yeah, they're on the same Rd.
- 6:33Is that single location? No, they're traveling, they're
- 6:36going around, they're moving. OK.
- 6:38But there's a lot more movement on a highway versus in a cave.
- 6:42They go. They go places, they do.
- 6:45I'm still seeing bug Ted. That's still my answer.
- 6:48OK, I mean it's correct. OK.
- 6:51Yeah, the bug I feel like. You were trying to trick me.
- 6:54I'm not trying to trick you, I'm just I'm debating whether or not
- 6:57this is a single location horror movie.
- 6:59I disagree. Single location I think is more
- 7:02specific to like a single room, like a very confined space.
- 7:06So then I saw two. What's that?
- 7:09That would be single location. But they're not in a single
- 7:11room. They're in a single building.
- 7:13It's a very confined space, the. Building has a tunnel attached
- 7:16underneath it and they escape to it at the end.
- 7:19That's how they get to the bathroom.
- 7:20OK, fine. It's not single location then.
- 7:22Are you happy? No, I want you to broaden your
- 7:25definition. Nope.
- 7:28All right, so the budget for this movie was three and a half
- 7:31million pounds. This is you tell me.
- 7:37I I started to say dollars, but pounds is more correct.
- 7:40This is auk horror film opening box office, $8.9 million.
- 7:45I'm using dollars now because that was the currency and
- 7:49worldwide gross was 57 million. OK IMDb score 7.2.
- 7:54Nice. Yeah, it's really good.
- 7:57All right, so I have a theme for 2005 and the theme don't give me
- 8:03anonymous look. That's the thing for the show,
- 8:06always. I know I just you said 2005.
- 8:09Well, this is a weird thing. Apparently that was happening in
- 8:11this era. OK, And it's what the fuck was
- 8:14everybody's obsession with caves?
- 8:17OK, I didn't even know there were enough movies to make a
- 8:20theme out of that. I was hoping and then God, did I
- 8:24find them. There's there's three more right
- 8:26here, so the first one is called The Cave.
- 8:29OK, that sounds like it's definitely about a cave.
- 8:32Yeah, it sure is that Released August 26th, 2005.
- 8:37Budget of $30 million. Worldwide gross 33 million IMDb
- 8:445.1. And I actually did pull synopses
- 8:49for these movies just to like share the caveness of it all.
- 8:54So The Cave is bloodthirsty creatures away a pack of divers
- 8:59who become trapped in an honor water cave network.
- 9:01OK, sound familiar? Basically this.
- 9:03Yeah. Sound familiar?
- 9:05OK, this must have been like a collective fear that was
- 9:08happening in this time. What happened in 2005
- 9:12culturally? Well, I guess it probably would
- 9:13have been 2004. Yeah, I don't know.
- 9:15Culturally, that made people afraid of caves.
- 9:17It's a great question. So the next film is the cavern,
- 9:21so The Cave, but you just put RN at the end of it.
- 9:26The synopsis for this and then Asian Desert.
- 9:31A team of explorers learn of a newly discovered cave system and
- 9:34set out to explore it. However, as soon as they begin
- 9:37to descend, it becomes clear that this was a secret that
- 9:39should have been or should have remained below the surface.
- 9:42Sound familiar? Oh.
- 9:44My God. OK.
- 9:46So that released October 30th, 2005 a $150,000 budget that
- 9:52don't have the worldwide gross. IMDb 2.80.
- 9:57That's bad, yeah. That's bad.
- 9:59Makes me very curious. You know, I love me some low
- 10:03budget, low rated movies right there.
- 10:06OK. And the final one is called, It
- 10:11Waits. OK, so nothing with cave or
- 10:14cavern in it. No.
- 10:16So the synopsis Terrorist strikes a young woman and her
- 10:19boyfriend when archaeology students unwittingly unleash a
- 10:22demon from a cave. OK, so this is that's more of
- 10:26the mummy. Yeah, but look at the poster
- 10:29that looks very similar to our boys in this.
- 10:33It sure does. It sure does.
- 10:35So yeah, that and apparently that one's on Tubi so we could
- 10:39watch that too. But that Released October 13th,
- 10:422005, $1.2 million budget, no worldwide gross.
- 10:47IMDb. 4 out of 10. OK.
- 10:50Isn't that weird though? Like I I I was very amazed that
- 10:56I was able to find. I mean essentially these are 4
- 10:59movies that all released this year that have the same theme.
- 11:02OK so I just I googled real quick Cave deaths 2004.
- 11:06Oh, OK. In 2004, there were several cave
- 11:09deaths, including three teenagers who died from carbon
- 11:11monoxide poisoning while exploring the Wabasha St. caves
- 11:14in St. Paul, MN, on April 29th.
- 11:18Yeah. So I guess that that's the
- 11:21thing. When did the party the nutty?
- 11:25Party Cave. Incident have.
- 11:27What's it called? It's not nutty party.
- 11:28Is it party? It's party.
- 11:32It's something like that. Party cave.
- 11:35Yeah, it's a party. It is nutty party.
- 11:37Nutty Party Cave. Oh my God.
- 11:39That happened in 2009. OK, so.
- 11:47They did not learn their lessons.
- 11:48Yeah, that was that was life imitating art.
- 11:50Yeah, the. Other way around for those who
- 11:52are unaware of that incident, like look it up.
- 11:55It's terrifying. It is terrifying.
- 11:57If this movie made you feel claustrophobic, reading about an
- 12:01actual incident will make you feel very.
- 12:02Claustrophobic. Yeah as well.
- 12:04It's one of the most upsetting stories that I've ever read or
- 12:08heard or seen visually. They they've made diagrams of
- 12:11like what essentially happened in that cave.
- 12:13And yeah, so look that up. Do yourself a favor, or don't if
- 12:17you don't want to be freaked out.
- 12:19Yeah, I just got goosebumps talking about it.
- 12:22OK, so tag lines. OK, the one on the poster scream
- 12:26your last breath. It's uninspired if you ask.
- 12:30Me, yeah. It's see they should have went
- 12:33with this next one. I like this.
- 12:35The scariest movie in Earth. Yeah, I like that.
- 12:40That's pretty good. That's.
- 12:41That's cute. All right.
- 12:43Claustrophobia, disorientation, hallucination, fear.
- 12:49OK. Yeah, I mean, that's kind of my
- 12:52thoughts on that too. I don't even think that there's
- 12:54any hallucination that goes on. They think it's hallucination.
- 12:58Sarah also has nightmares. Depending on which ending you go
- 13:03with, it could be hallucination. That's OK, yeah, also fair.
- 13:07Face your deepest fear. And deepest.
- 13:12Afraid of the dark you will be. Yes, I am.
- 13:15I already am. We're good, Yeah.
- 13:17It's fine, All right? Those are the tag lines.
- 13:19I don't think that they're anything too special, but, you
- 13:22know, like, this movie kind of sells itself.
- 13:23Yeah, pretty much. You don't need, like, a baller
- 13:26tag line to really get people interested in this.
- 13:29Yeah. Cave scary.
- 13:30Cave scary. Cave scary.
- 13:31That's our tag line. Cave scary.
- 13:36OK, so let's do some fun facts. All right?
- 13:40So originally they were gonna have this be a cast of male and
- 13:44female characters, but Marshall's business partner at
- 13:47the time realized that horror movies rarely had all female
- 13:50casts, so they wanted to just go ahead and do all female casts
- 13:54for this. I appreciate.
- 13:56Marshall actually consulted his female friends for this movie to
- 14:01not make his characters cliched or have cliche dialogue.
- 14:05Also appreciate. So they took inspiration from
- 14:09Texas Chancellor Massacre, The Thing and Deliverance on how to
- 14:13build tension in their movies. OK, they critiqued most American
- 14:17Horror films of this era. So they not the era of those
- 14:21movies, but of the 2000s spots. I also tend to critique movies
- 14:26of this era. They their problem was that
- 14:30those movies tend to take the tension and they dial it up to
- 14:3311 immediately and then the movie suffers because it can't
- 14:37keep up for the rest of the duration of the film.
- 14:39Yes. So they wanted to slowly build
- 14:42things and then once, as he described that once things get
- 14:47as bad as they can be in The Cave, he is like, let's make it
- 14:52worse. And that's funny enough, I was
- 14:56listening to skirt notes this week and they were talking about
- 15:00conflict. And basically like, you have to
- 15:02have like ongoing conflict to have a story, and you have to
- 15:05keep upping the stakes. And so if you start off at 11,
- 15:10where do you go from there? Yeah, exactly.
- 15:12Yeah. I mean, you, you can try to
- 15:14maintain that 11, but that's really tough to do.
- 15:17Yeah, yeah. You got to, like, slowly,
- 15:19gradually build your way up to it.
- 15:22So they had a maze of caves actually designed by Simon
- 15:25Bowles, who had 21 cave sets constructed.
- 15:30Yeah. The creatures are called
- 15:32crawlers. I was wondering if there was an
- 15:34official name for them. And they have a back story too
- 15:38that they created for them. So these guys are Cavemen who
- 15:42stayed underground, so they experienced an entirely
- 15:47different evolution from the rest of humanity.
- 15:49I. Appreciate that because when
- 15:51they say like, oh, they evolved to adapt underground and like,
- 15:54that's great. But I was sitting there in my
- 15:56head thinking like evolution takes hundreds of thousands to
- 16:00millions of years to really make this much of a difference.
- 16:03So I love that that canonically that's true for them.
- 16:07Love it. Yeah.
- 16:07And then they like kind of lay the groundwork there by putting
- 16:11cave paintings inside the caves too, which is kind of cool,
- 16:14Which is, it's kind of weird when you first think about it
- 16:16because it's like blind, but maybe not originally.
- 16:21OK. Yeah, like evolution made them
- 16:24blind, but like the ones that could see made markings.
- 16:27Like this is how we get out of here.
- 16:29That makes sense. That makes sense.
- 16:31However, I would say over that duration of time, would these
- 16:38caves not have changed? Because that would have been
- 16:42enough time for caves to completely change.
- 16:45Yes. And that's, I think that's part
- 16:49of the reason it was kept more simplistic like entrance on two
- 16:53sides. That's true, but they have
- 16:55markings. Juno finds markings of like how
- 16:58they are like. This way leads to exit.
- 17:00They also never actually get to the exit, so.
- 17:03They don't, no, But they had markings there.
- 17:05Yeah, they had markings, but you know, they were kind of betting
- 17:08on on something that might not actually pan out.
- 17:12So those because the crawler design was actually hidden from
- 17:16the cast until they filmed their scenes with it.
- 17:18That way they can get natural reactions from the cast I.
- 17:21Love it when they do. That.
- 17:22I like that too. It's always effective.
- 17:23It's yeah, it is very effective. The US version, as we have
- 17:28talked about in the past, has a different ending to the British
- 17:33version, the original version. So for us in the US, the movie
- 17:37ends with Sarah making it out of the case system.
- 17:41She makes it back to her vehicle and she sees the ghost of Juno.
- 17:44And then she screams. We see her eyes, but then it
- 17:47cuts to black immediately. But if you let the movie keep
- 17:51going, like the British version does, you see that Sarah has
- 17:55been in The Cave all along. She never got out.
- 17:57She's staying like she's dead. Yeah.
- 18:00Basically she's. Having another nightmare type
- 18:03thing and the reason? They made that change is because
- 18:05apparently American audiences hated how hopeless it felt with
- 18:09that ending, so they changed it. So they actually learned of The
- 18:16Cave, the film that was coming out the same year at the same
- 18:20time. It was a competing film.
- 18:21They had basically like a like, yeah.
- 18:24So originally this movie was slated to release around
- 18:28November 2005 up to around February 2006, but they learned
- 18:34that The Cave had began filming 6 months before them.
- 18:39So they fast track their production and they ended up
- 18:43finishing it by February 2005, which I think that's really
- 18:47interesting considering they had less of a budget.
- 18:50The Cave as a reminder, had a budget of $30 million.
- 18:53This movie had three and a half million and they had to fast
- 18:57track their whole thing and then they ended up becoming the more
- 19:00successful movie. This is wild.
- 19:01Because an indie film like, either they tend to be shot in
- 19:05the course of like a week or over several many months.
- 19:09Yeah. Because of because of budget
- 19:11constraints. Yeah, exactly.
- 19:12You either knock it all out at once or you have to do it in
- 19:14bits and pieces. Yep.
- 19:15So they ended up working for them.
- 19:17But, you know, some people work better in those restrictions.
- 19:20I think when they, like, have that, like, timeline that they
- 19:24have to have it done. So the marketing campaign for
- 19:28this movie took a hit. They had to readjust everything
- 19:31because of the July 2005 London bombings.
- 19:35And what happened was one of the buses that exploded actually had
- 19:40the poster of this movie on it. And the poster had in its text
- 19:45outright terror. Bold and brilliant, which was
- 19:49not a good look at the time. So they recalled all of their
- 19:54posters. And then they decided to refocus
- 19:58the campaign on the women standing together and fighting
- 20:01back because they felt like that was a more is a better message
- 20:07for what they needed at that time, like fighting back against
- 20:10terror. And they outright just took
- 20:12terror away from all of their marketing after that because
- 20:14they just did not even want that to be featured there anymore.
- 20:18So yeah, those are the fun facts that I had for this movie.
- 20:22OK, so let's get into our discussion.
- 20:25Good, bad, ugly and absurd. Jesse, kick it off for us.
- 20:28What did you like about this? Oh man.
- 20:31There's a lot that I like about this.
- 20:34They've got, you know, like what you were talking about in the
- 20:37Fun Facts. The fact that it's an all female
- 20:38cast and they don't feel like a big heap of cliches is really
- 20:42nice and something that like, you don't get to see a ton.
- 20:46And it was just it, it felt like a believable group of women,
- 20:51some of whom are friends and have some who have stronger
- 20:55friendships. And then we've also got like the
- 20:57obligatory sister pair because I feel like that tends to happen.
- 21:01Like, yeah, it, it just felt, it felt very real.
- 21:05And the the tension does like honestly, I I don't even need
- 21:10the dwellers in this movie. That's how I feel too.
- 21:13Lost in a. Cave is terrifying on its own.
- 21:16I'm sold. I'm sold on the premise alone
- 21:17that by the time the dwellers come around, I'm like, I don't
- 21:19need this. Like let's just keep being in a
- 21:21cave. I'm scared enough.
- 21:23It's fine. That's usually.
- 21:24How I feel too, like anytime like I go, we go for like a long
- 21:28periods of watching this movie and not watching it.
- 21:30Yeah, and every time, like I in between in that break, I always
- 21:34think I don't need The Cave people.
- 21:37I just need them to be having difficulties in a cave that is
- 21:42unmapped, unexplored. That right there alone is
- 21:45perfect for a horror movie. I remember.
- 21:47Once we had some friends over and we just had the TV on in the
- 21:49background and this came up and it was like right as they were
- 21:51about to leave. But our friends are like hikers
- 21:54and rock climbers and they just got sucked in and we're all
- 21:58like, this is. To be fair, it was.
- 21:59Terrifying. It was just one of them that
- 22:02kept getting pulled back because the other one was trying to walk
- 22:04out the door and the other one just kept standing at the door.
- 22:07The mimic of their. Relationship generally, anyway.
- 22:09Yeah, it is. Yeah.
- 22:11But yeah, and it it captures you because it's so tense.
- 22:14It's so. Tense.
- 22:16I also, I really appreciate the depiction of Sarah's grief in
- 22:20this movie. It also feels very, very real in
- 22:23a very relatable kind of way. Yeah.
- 22:27You know, the nightmares that she has, the way she panics when
- 22:30she is caught. And it's like because when
- 22:34you're still in the throes of that very heavy grief, like
- 22:37stuff that would normally be stressful or scary, it it's like
- 22:43the grief is like a parasite and it kind of like gloms on to that
- 22:47feeling and wants to like feed off of it and it makes
- 22:50everything worse. So I just thought it was just, I
- 22:54appreciate that this movie tried really hard to be real in, in
- 22:59the way it's characters are are written.
- 23:02It's grounded. All things considered, yeah, all
- 23:04things. Well, and I was going to say
- 23:06aside from the dwellers, but the fact that they like made them
- 23:08canonically like hundreds of thousands of millions of years
- 23:12old like they. The we'll talk about that here
- 23:19in the next part. All right.
- 23:21Do you have any other goods? That's, I mean, that's really
- 23:24it's, I just think it's an incredibly well done movie.
- 23:28Yeah. OK.
- 23:29Yeah, I agree with you about the tension.
- 23:30I think that they handle that really well.
- 23:32I mean, it's such a great premise of going caving because
- 23:36like, I mean, unless you are the splonking type, I don't know,
- 23:40like maybe those people get freaked out by that too, but
- 23:43that's part of the thrill for them.
- 23:44But like, for me, I'm never gonna touch it, so getting to
- 23:48experience it second hand with this is really engaging for me.
- 23:54And they did a great job designing those sets because it
- 23:58feels like you're actually in a cave with them.
- 24:00I was. Very nervous for the actors
- 24:03during the climbing scenes. And I'm like, oh God, don't
- 24:06fall. Yeah.
- 24:07It's so well done. They did like the set design and
- 24:11everything is just fantastic with this movie and the way they
- 24:13play. With lighting, yeah.
- 24:16And that even becomes a thing like it's like they knew they
- 24:18did their research about how caving.
- 24:21And I see The thing is, it could be complete bullshit.
- 24:24I don't know anything about caving.
- 24:25But when they were talking about phosphor lights that are false
- 24:28lights that happen in caves, that's kind of fucking scary
- 24:32that you could be fixated on this false light the entire
- 24:35time. And then you climb up to it and
- 24:37then it's just a a shiny rock. You know that that sucks.
- 24:42So I'll give this movie credit for not only being since in that
- 24:48situation, but they did find a really good way to make it to
- 24:54ramp up the stakes. Even though the stakes are high
- 24:57to be they they managed to take it up a notch.
- 25:00Like they introduced two things. They introduced The Cave
- 25:04dwellers, the crawlers, and they also introduced the whole thing
- 25:08of Juno killing Beth accidentally and then Beth
- 25:14passing it on to Sarah. So she's like spreading like
- 25:18Juno is a killer now, even though we know that's not the
- 25:20case. But it created this whole other
- 25:23tension between them. And then it's like it added a
- 25:26new threat. Yeah.
- 25:27And it just like it kept doing that over and over again.
- 25:31And it just was so well handled it.
- 25:33They did a great job with this. So yeah, this movie.
- 25:35Definitely takes the concept of like, what else can go wrong?
- 25:38And I was like, well, actually here, if you.
- 25:40Yeah, here we. Go yeah.
- 25:41And it just, it kept up like there's nothing.
- 25:45You don't get bored with this. It just say goes the entire way.
- 25:49It's just Oh my, and the opening even like that kill with the
- 25:53husband and the daughter. It catches you off guard.
- 25:57I mean, everything is just so normal up until that point.
- 26:00I mean kind of, but and then when Sarah.
- 26:02Wakes up in the hospital and she's running down the hallway
- 26:04and the lights are going and you're like, OK, this is a
- 26:06nightmare, but it is. But it isn't because then she
- 26:09falls into Beth's arms and we're like, no, this is very real.
- 26:12And it puts you in the character's head space where
- 26:14she's like, no, this is just a bad dream.
- 26:16Surely I'm about to wake up and then.
- 26:19It's it. It gets dark from the beginning.
- 26:21Like they let you know you're not in for a feel good movie.
- 26:25Yeah, you're gonna have a bad time with us.
- 26:27Here we are. Sexca bomb and we are here to
- 26:30talk about death and get sad and stuff.
- 26:31Exactly. So some of the bad what?
- 26:35What did you not think was well done with this?
- 26:39I what did I not like I you. Want me to start?
- 26:45I'm just I'm. Thinking, OK, give me a second.
- 26:47Just give me, just give me a minute.
- 26:50OK? I again, I'm just gonna say it
- 26:53like I don't feel like I necessarily needed the crawlers,
- 26:57OK? Hey.
- 26:58That's I think they work in the movie, but I also think that
- 27:04it's like this becomes a monster movie when before it was, yeah.
- 27:09No, I it was doing just. Fine on its own, I absolutely.
- 27:12Agree with that and I don't like it's not a bad thing.
- 27:16It's just like because they still make it good, but it's
- 27:20just like this wasn't needed. You threw in this extra.
- 27:24You made it unrealistic. Everything about the movie
- 27:28beforehand was so real, so grounded.
- 27:31And it like it did all of the like we love movies like this.
- 27:34Think about like Frozen, where we've talked about like all of
- 27:36these right circumstances happened that put them trapped
- 27:40in this life or death situation. And we have the same thing going
- 27:43on here because they talk about all the safety precautions
- 27:45you're supposed to take as spelunkers.
- 27:49And you know, they've got the flight plan, they've got all
- 27:52their rope bags. And then we see them go in
- 27:54there. They're all unsure, but Juno's
- 27:56like, no, no, no, I mapped this out last week.
- 27:59And then they go in there and then there's the the rock fall
- 28:04and they're trapped. And then that's when they find
- 28:06out, oh, hey, the people that have our flight plan, they have
- 28:09the wrong one. They don't know we're down here.
- 28:11And this is all setting it up perfectly as is.
- 28:14And then Holly goes running to try and find a way out, falls
- 28:17down that hole, fucks her leg. And then it's like, man, now we
- 28:21have to deal with this. Like there was plenty going on.
- 28:23We didn't need the last 30 minutes to be about monsters,
- 28:26no. And that, like, again, I I just
- 28:30want to reiterate that I don't think it hurts the movie because
- 28:33I still think the movie is strong with those characters.
- 28:36But it it just, it really didn't need to be.
- 28:40You could have even just had to be her being suspicious of Juno.
- 28:45Yeah, like accidentally, like she gets spooked and
- 28:47accidentally kills Beth stolen. Like it kind of sews doubt and
- 28:54like a yeah, worry or whatever, like a suspicion in the friend
- 28:58group there. So they're all like, OK, she's a
- 29:01killer and then, you know, she's not.
- 29:02But then it just kind of creates that dynamic, yeah.
- 29:05Absolutely. OK.
- 29:07So my bad is, you know, also with The Cave boilers.
- 29:12But like it's it's just like a weird thing, but like they are
- 29:18blind. They can't see.
- 29:20They evolved within The Cave system, but they still leave.
- 29:26Yes. And they go out and they hunt.
- 29:27So they should be known. Yeah.
- 29:30I mean, not like I know that there are species and stuff like
- 29:33that that remain hidden, but if they are this out there and like
- 29:38actively hunting like this is fucking Appalachian Mountains.
- 29:40People like this is where we're from.
- 29:43People go out there and hunt there like they go out there
- 29:46early mornings, like all the fucking time.
- 29:48It's all day. It's a huge.
- 29:49Thing around here, yeah. So I would imagine, and it could
- 29:53be like a mythical creature type deal where people like, I swear
- 29:56to God, I saw this like fucking guy.
- 29:57He's a crawling. He was a crawler.
- 29:59Yeah, you know people. Will be like, that's just a
- 30:01cheap of copper bro. Yeah, like.
- 30:04It's it's gonna eat goats. You're fine.
- 30:05Yeah, you're fine. Don't worry about it, man, but
- 30:07you know like it like when you start thinking about it, it kind
- 30:10of falls apart again. No, that mean it that goes into
- 30:13like whoa, you made the movie a little bit more out there by
- 30:16introducing this thing like you took away the ground in this of
- 30:20it and now it's becoming a monster movie.
- 30:22So listen. You.
- 30:23Have to deal with that now. Unexplored.
- 30:24Caves are absolutely, positively a thing because they're
- 30:27underground. You know what I mean?
- 30:29Yeah, that's that's very much a real thing.
- 30:31But the monsters that come out to the surface to hunt?
- 30:36Not that we know of. How do we how do they know if
- 30:39they're hunting at night? They can't tell.
- 30:43Yeah, right. Yeah, There's like, just for
- 30:46real though. Like it's just, yeah.
- 30:48OK, So Glee. Oh, let's talk about Juno being
- 30:55the worst friend. Yeah, I mean, Juno is straight
- 30:58up the ugly in this movie. She she like she at the
- 31:03beginning. You can even tell like they have
- 31:05that like that dynamic there. You can tell Sarah's getting a
- 31:09little suspicious. Yeah, cuz.
- 31:10Paul is a little bit too delicate with Juno and she's
- 31:15trying to even ask in the car. Then when Sarah wakes up in the
- 31:19hospital and best comforting her, Juno's just kind of crying
- 31:22in the background and we find out later that she basically
- 31:24pieced out before even the funeral.
- 31:26Which I I get it, people handle grief and stuff like that
- 31:30weirdly and differently, but but that?
- 31:32Was you were already? In Scotland, and it seemed like
- 31:35she was planning to be there for longer, that sounded like.
- 31:38Originally. Before the deaths, everybody.
- 31:41Else in the friend group was still there for Sarah and Juno
- 31:44just left on her own. She just like, ghosted the
- 31:47entire thing. Yes.
- 31:48Yeah. So it just there, there's it.
- 31:52She's just and then she takes them to she doesn't follow like
- 31:56the most basic of this type, like of the safety guidelines
- 32:01that you do in this type of situation where you make sure
- 32:05people know where you're going. If people don't know where you
- 32:10are, they're not going to know where to look when they realize
- 32:12you're missing. I mean not only that.
- 32:14It's just shitty to take your friends and lie to them like
- 32:17we're going to this very touristy.
- 32:20We're going to this touristy cave destiny, everybody's like,
- 32:22OK, this is going to be a breeze.
- 32:24Oh no, we're going to a place where we nobody has ever been
- 32:27and it's completely unmapped and I don't even know if there's an
- 32:30accident on the other end and especially.
- 32:31Sam, it's implied that she hasn't really done this much.
- 32:35Like, she's maybe done it once with her sister, but they're,
- 32:37like, explaining all of these, like, safety things to her.
- 32:40Yeah. So it just, it's really a shitty
- 32:43way to treat your friends. And the way she keeps saying
- 32:46that it's for Sarah and Sarah's like, I don't feel like it
- 32:48actually is. This is like.
- 32:50A thing that they have done in the past.
- 32:52That's right. They've definitely done cave
- 32:53dives together. So let me ask you, because I
- 32:57feel like this is kind of like as a parent, unresponsible but
- 33:00like or irresponsible, but like you have a kid and you like do
- 33:04shit like that like I feel like once you have a kid, you maybe
- 33:07like put things like that aside. That's so dangerous, man.
- 33:12I. Think.
- 33:14You have to think about other people at that point.
- 33:16The thing though. Is that it seems like Sarah
- 33:19generally tries to do the things that she knows are within her
- 33:22skill level. You know, they do that like
- 33:24white water rafting, like rivers and areas.
- 33:27Those are graded same as like the caves where they said this
- 33:29is a level 2. Like those things, those types
- 33:31of things when they are known, they're mapped out like they're
- 33:34graded so you know what your level is.
- 33:36It's so dangerous, though. It is still dangerous.
- 33:38But like plenty of things are dangerous because in the end,
- 33:41what killed her husband and her child?
- 33:43It was a car wreck, you know, and I don't think that again,
- 33:48like you said, we're not parents.
- 33:50I don't think that you need to necessarily give up something
- 33:53that is a huge part of your identity and makes you happy if
- 33:58if it doesn't seem like it's inherently more dangerous than
- 34:00anything else in your life at plenty of people white water
- 34:03raft, you know what I mean? Plenty of people go go cave
- 34:06exploring and it seemed like they were trying to stay in the
- 34:09generally like safer theories of them I suppose.
- 34:12I just generally whenever I think of those people, I think
- 34:16of people who don't have like people that rely on them Well,
- 34:19and it's. Really it's Juno and Holly that
- 34:21keep talking about the like we need to up the stakes.
- 34:24It's not worth it if it's not dangerous.
- 34:27And it seems like they haven't moved on from that mentality
- 34:31where other people are like we still want to be like that was
- 34:34their safe and have fun. That was their shared.
- 34:36Mentality even before, but was. It because I get the impression
- 34:40that Juno generally only hasn't always been a great friend.
- 34:43You know what I mean? I could see her being like, no,
- 34:45that's what we all always agreed on and people are like, well,
- 34:47not to the extent that you take it.
- 34:49Juno. Well, she outright.
- 34:50Said it though, and it's not like she didn't disagree with it
- 34:53when she said she's like, yeah, I know that we used to do that.
- 34:55That used to be our credo for like, you know, but.
- 34:59I, I just, you know, I don't think you have to completely
- 35:02stop doing stuff like that. It seemed like she was doing it
- 35:04in in a way that she could still do it, but was still being like
- 35:07relatively safe. Fair enough, all.
- 35:09Right, so. So.
- 35:11Absurd, then. Oh my God, I had it ready and
- 35:15I've just completely forgotten it.
- 35:16Oh, OK. So it just says Appalachian
- 35:20Mountain, Appalachian Mountains, USA, and we're like, well, that
- 35:23could be a huge chunk of the eastern part of the United
- 35:28States. So I was trying to figure it
- 35:29out. The rental car first in flight,
- 35:32North Carolina, that's where we're at.
- 35:34That's great. Then later at the end of the
- 35:36movie when she drives away, those same license plates are
- 35:40suddenly Montana plates. I think it's a.
- 35:43Different one. They had two.
- 35:45Vehicles I feel like. Both the vehicles were North
- 35:48Carolina plates before though. I don't know.
- 35:50I didn't. Pay too much attention but I The
- 35:52only defense I can have for that is rental cars.
- 35:55They have different license plates from all over the United
- 35:57States. I.
- 35:58Suppose yeah, but I don't agree with that, OK.
- 36:03Well, I mean, absurd moments, like, God, I don't fucking know.
- 36:08Like the fact that they have like old cave paintings down
- 36:12there and like, it looks like they were still doing it, like
- 36:15recreationally too, you know what I mean?
- 36:17Like they were like, here's art. This is our art leaving.
- 36:21Yeah, here's this. I drew the mountain and that's
- 36:23like, that's probably the most like that's like they're Mona
- 36:27Lisa down there. Like this is like, do you think?
- 36:30One of the crawlers wrote Adam sucks Dicks, cocks, cocks.
- 36:36Dicks, I always get it. Mixed up always.
- 36:40How embarrassed. Are you?
- 36:41Dude, you just embarrassed yourself in front of everybody,
- 36:45Rob. Cordray is never going to want
- 36:47to talk to me now as if he. Ever wanted to?
- 36:49I'm kidding. OK.
- 36:53All right. So let's rate it out of 10/8
- 36:56point. 758.7. Five, I thought, really good
- 37:00rating. That is, I.
- 37:02Just thought that we were going to go up there man, like you
- 37:05can. Go up there.
- 37:06You don't have to do the same rating as me.
- 37:08I'm not going to. I'm just.
- 37:10I can be shocked. It's.
- 37:12Really shocking I can. Be caught off guard by your
- 37:14rating. That's.
- 37:16Where am I rating nine and a? Half 9 1/2.
- 37:18OK, OK. Really.
- 37:20Probably if you took away The Cave dwellers it would maybe
- 37:22make it its own. I don't hate The Cave blowers
- 37:26but like they just weren't necessary.
- 37:28It felt like the. Movie didn't believe in itself
- 37:31enough. That's I mean, honestly, that's
- 37:34how it comes across to me. Like they're like, OK, we need
- 37:36to up the stakes. That was I'm scared we're not
- 37:38going to be able to build that the caving parts.
- 37:40The caving parts were more upsetting to me than anything
- 37:43else in this movie if we just kept having her get stuck over
- 37:46and over again like I really honestly Talia was.
- 37:50On a roll last night and we had to keep pausing the movie
- 37:52because of her. And I was a little bit relieved
- 37:54because it kept giving me like a break.
- 37:56Yeah. So maybe.
- 37:57She's doing for you then our starting.
- 37:59Average is 9.125. Great.
- 38:01That's a really good one. It's a good start.
- 38:03It's a good start. Okay, all right.
- 38:06So it starts off with some white water rafting, which is
- 38:08something I've always wanted to do, but I've always been
- 38:10terrified to do. Oh really?
- 38:12Yes, absolutely. It does seem fun.
- 38:15But it also dangerous. Yeah, yeah.
- 38:17So they're doing it. They're having fun.
- 38:20We see Paul and Jesse, that's Sarah's husband and child,
- 38:23standing on the bank watching, cheering her on.
- 38:26They get close to the bank, playfully pushed Juno in the
- 38:29water, and she uses this as an excuse like, oh, Paul and so wet
- 38:33and cold. Can you help?
- 38:35Yeah. And then you can see Sarah's
- 38:37clocking it from across the way, like, oh, he's being a little
- 38:41weird, Yeah. This is a little bit too
- 38:44intimate for my tapes. And she even asks him about it
- 38:48as they're driving back to the hotel.
- 38:49She's like, it seems like you've been really distant.
- 38:51He's like, what are you talking about?
- 38:53It's like he. Inched over a little bit away
- 38:55from her, too. And she said that like, what do
- 38:57you mean? Yeah.
- 39:00And then he, like, he's looking at her distracted, accidentally
- 39:03veers into an oncoming car. And there's like pipes on top of
- 39:06the car, they just slide off and impel him and the child,
- 39:09unfortunately. Yep.
- 39:11And got to the. Hospital and Sarah's having a
- 39:15nightmare. Lights just keep turning off as
- 39:17she's running through the hallway and it's like a never
- 39:19ending hallway. Jesse.
- 39:20And she's screaming for her and crying.
- 39:22And then she sees Beth and Beth confirms that neither of them
- 39:26made it. Yep.
- 39:28So one year later, we're at the Appalachian Mountains, USA.
- 39:32Fast, yeah. Beth and Sarah are driving to
- 39:36Chattooga National Park. I don't.
- 39:38I didn't look it up. I don't know if that's a real
- 39:40place or not. Let me take.
- 39:42A look because it sounds vaguely familiar.
- 39:46Chattooga County in Georgia. Chattooga National Park that is.
- 39:53In South Carolina. They also have the Chattahoochee
- 39:59way down Yonder at the Chattahoochee so.
- 40:01This kind of puts your whole license plate gate Chattooga
- 40:06River trail. South Carolina.
- 40:08So we. We got North Carolina plates and
- 40:10Montana plates in South Carolina.
- 40:12Yeah, Yeah. So.
- 40:14I guess that's that's where we're at.
- 40:15Oh, National Forest in North Carolina.
- 40:17Chattooga, Wild and Scenic River.
- 40:19OK, never mind. We're back in North Carolina,
- 40:20and that's from the US. Forest Service so so.
- 40:23You know, it's for real. Yeah, the government.
- 40:25Has never lied to anybody. Ever.
- 40:26Never. Especially about parks, no.
- 40:29Or recreation? No.
- 40:32So they. Arrive at a cabin, they're
- 40:34greeted by Juno and she introduces them to the rest of
- 40:36the crew, including Holly, who is a new member of the crew.
- 40:40She's Juno's protege, yeah. Holly seems young and reckless.
- 40:48That's how she comes across. Yeah, she's.
- 40:50Pretty brash with like, everything, yeah.
- 40:52And we've got the two sisters, Becca and Sam, so.
- 40:58And Sam is a medical student. Yeah, her big sister's very
- 41:02happy and proud of her. And my sweet, so they're all
- 41:06just they're having fun. They're talking, they're talking
- 41:10about the Borum Caverns. And Holly's disappointing
- 41:13because she says it's for tourists and it's like Holly,
- 41:16you can do an extreme cave dive some other time.
- 41:18This is a big group adventure and it's meant to be light
- 41:20hearted and fun. I mean, it's like.
- 41:21You get the impression this is the first time they've all hung
- 41:24out together in a long time. Like, if you're going to ease
- 41:26your way back into it, do something beginner friendly, you
- 41:29know what I mean? Yeah.
- 41:29Work your way up. Yes.
- 41:31Exactly. So it's the next.
- 41:33Morning, they all party too hard.
- 41:34The night before, they're all except for Juno, who's so
- 41:37obnoxiously, like, out jogging in the morning, she's like doing
- 41:41yoga poses, like flexing in front of everybody.
- 41:43Like, this is how great I am. She does a heel stretch.
- 41:45And the dancer in me, it was very horrified because of that
- 41:48flexed ass foot. It just ruins the whole look of
- 41:51the pose. She in a dancer.
- 41:53She's a climber. The toe, yeah.
- 41:56So they all head out, they're heading towards The Cave sites.
- 42:00It's like a. They take their group photo
- 42:02first. Oh yeah, they take.
- 42:04A Yeah, yeah. Group photo.
- 42:05They're hiking along. They're driving.
- 42:08I think Sarah's driving. She's getting like, really?
- 42:10Reckless with her. Driving.
- 42:12She's like, oh, let's go off roading and everybody's getting
- 42:14uncomfortable, Yeah. And so they get there and people
- 42:18are like, do you know, are you, Are you sure we're going the
- 42:21right way? I know this feels wrong.
- 42:22She goes, yeah, no, no, no. I mapped this out last week so
- 42:25that way I could submit the flight plan.
- 42:27Yeah, so they, as they're walking like they've parked,
- 42:31they're now hiking towards the entrance, they stumble across a
- 42:34deer. I wore a moose or something.
- 42:36It was a. Moose.
- 42:37Yeah, it's. Dead.
- 42:38It's decomposing and I now realize that this is apparently
- 42:42probably where when the creatures attacked and, you
- 42:45know, ate it. So they continue on and they
- 42:50arrive at the entrance and this should have been a sign that
- 42:52this was not a beginner level touristy.
- 42:55Yeah, this is a hole in the ground.
- 42:57It's just a giant. Hole and you got to just grapple
- 43:00and like repel down, repel in. Yeah.
- 43:02And so they're doing it, Holly, just like she superhero jumps
- 43:06from the top to the bottom. And Junior was like Holly, Yeah.
- 43:10Yeah, she's like the last one down or no Sarah's, But either
- 43:12way she comes in way too high. And I thought that was a
- 43:15terrible shot because they like, they definitely did like CG.
- 43:19Yeah, they took like a JPG of her and they, like, blew it up.
- 43:23Yeah. The the repelling was not the
- 43:25greatest. There's also like a scene later
- 43:27with Bats that feels very CG, which like, I get it, you can't
- 43:32put the actors around Bats. Bats killed Cujo.
- 43:34So like, we need to be cool with it, but you can.
- 43:37Not have them, you know, repel a super fast sound.
- 43:41I would. Love to cuddle a non rabbit bat.
- 43:44Well, so cute, we can try and arrange that sometime.
- 43:47I'm holding you. To it, OK.
- 43:50All right, so they're now in there, and they start exploring
- 43:54The Cave. They begin to crawl through.
- 43:56It's not too bad yet. They're just having to, like,
- 43:58hunker down. Yeah, we see.
- 43:59They've got flares. Oh, and they.
- 44:02Find a bloody handprint, yeah. Immediately at the.
- 44:05Entrance. Yeah, I thought that this.
- 44:07Well, they don't know yet that this is meant to be unexplored,
- 44:09but they should have like, gotten Juno's attention.
- 44:12Yeah, you know, they see they're using flare lights to look
- 44:16around and then they take a little little lunch break and
- 44:19Holly's doing some filming, so. Juno takes this opportunity to
- 44:23apologize to Sarah for just disappearing after the accident.
- 44:27Sarah doesn't really want to talk about it.
- 44:29They can kind of gather. So she's like, all right, I'm
- 44:31going to get up and walk around and then I'll find a get lost
- 44:34in. The Cave system.
- 44:35I don't really want to talk to you, Juno.
- 44:37Yeah, So she's confused by the route.
- 44:40She's like, this doesn't match any of the things I read in the
- 44:42book. And Juno's like, well, you can't
- 44:45trust books. They leave too much to
- 44:47interpretation. Just kind of like, waves it off
- 44:49like that. And that's not a good sign.
- 44:54They go through a passage that's like, super, super narrow.
- 44:58And I get, I struggle to breathe watching this.
- 45:02It's so it's the worst. Part of the movie, the best
- 45:05part, but like the most uncomfortable part.
- 45:06So Holly kicks it off. She makes it all the way
- 45:09through, so they think, OK, it's all good to go.
- 45:12So they're all going one at a time.
- 45:13Sarah's the last one to go and. She's got the rope bag.
- 45:17Yeah, she's got. The rope bag with her.
- 45:18So she gets stuck because of the rope bag.
- 45:21Yes, and. She starts to have a panic
- 45:23attack and Beth comes in and she helps her out and it's a really
- 45:26good friend moment that seems like a really good friend.
- 45:29How did Beth? Manage to turn around I think
- 45:32she. Had gotten out of the past
- 45:34passage and, like, turned herself around to go up in
- 45:37there. Gotcha.
- 45:37Yeah. When she realized that Sarah was
- 45:39stuck. And so she gets her to calm
- 45:42down, tells her her favorite joke.
- 45:44And they, you know, have a laugh.
- 45:46And then the rocks start to shift.
- 45:48And it's a different kind of panic, but it's a survival
- 45:51instinct kind of panic for Sarah.
- 45:53And she was like, but the rope bag.
- 45:54And Beth says fuck the rope bag. You just need to get through
- 45:57right now. You're more important than the
- 45:59rope bag. Could they not have just like
- 46:01left the rope bag, crawl back, reach through and just grab the
- 46:05rope bag separately and crawl backwards?
- 46:07I. Honestly, I don't know what the
- 46:09situation was with the rope bag. I don't, I don't know why it
- 46:12couldn't have been pushed through ahead of her.
- 46:14Or like tie a rope to the rope bag and pull it through like
- 46:18afterwards. Like they're just carrying.
- 46:21They're just dumb. Man, like we should be cave
- 46:23divers. We've got this shit, so they get
- 46:25through. There's a lot of dust because a
- 46:28lot of rocks have fallen. And dusty old bones full of
- 46:31green dust. The earth is new here.
- 46:34Yeah. And The Cave.
- 46:35Is like caved in now. So they're, they're trapped in
- 46:37there and they're like. OK, well, let's just pull out
- 46:39the book and find another way out.
- 46:41And Juno kind of has a moment and bring the book.
- 46:45Yeah, about. That and.
- 46:48And Becca has figured this out. And she goes, oh, that's because
- 46:51we're not in Borum Caves, are we?
- 46:54Which is really unfortunate because I made sure that I filed
- 46:58the flight plan you gave me for Borum Caves.
- 47:01And Juno's like, this is undiscovered.
- 47:03And I wanted us to be the one to discover it.
- 47:05Sarah. I wanted to name it after you.
- 47:07And she's like or. Maybe you, you know, she's like,
- 47:10oh, she probably would have like how how do you think that
- 47:13conversation went on? God, we should probably name it
- 47:15after like one of us, right? Like, you know, who's the person
- 47:17that like started this idea? Oh, was it me?
- 47:20Oh whoa, doesn't Juno sound? Like a really good name for your
- 47:22cave too? Cave, Juno.
- 47:23Yeah. Juno Cave.
- 47:24Yeah, yeah. Yeah.
- 47:27It's called Nutty Putty. Nutty buddy is that?
- 47:33Is that the snack that you bring to eat while you're there too
- 47:35complicated? Let's make a Juno.
- 47:39Yeah. God, that would be an insuffer.
- 47:41I wish we had an opportunity to see that, but we didn't.
- 47:47OK, so they decide they're going to start looking for ways out
- 47:51and they're using a Zippo lighter to see a breeze
- 47:54basically. So what their plan is?
- 47:57No, we haven't. Gotten there yet?
- 47:58They have to like they have. They haven't climbed the gap
- 48:01yet. That happens first.
- 48:03Because they they couldn't have done that with Holly with an
- 48:06injured leg. I want to be honest.
- 48:07I saw my note that said start looking for a way out and I
- 48:09jumped ahead. You did.
- 48:11I didn't read the rest of my note.
- 48:12They. Push forward and they find a gap
- 48:16and they're like, oh shit, we got to make it over there.
- 48:18They only have three of the clamps left and they don't have
- 48:21the rope system anymore because they had to pull like leave it
- 48:23back there. Yeah.
- 48:24So Beth is like, or not Beth Becca is like, all right, I'll
- 48:28do it. Don't worry about it.
- 48:29I've got 3 clamps. I can make it.
- 48:31So she starts doing. She uses two of the clamps, and
- 48:34then when she's about to use her third one, she notices.
- 48:37Wait a minute, there is something already.
- 48:39There, Yeah, so she just. Takes her hook, hooks it on
- 48:42there and then she uses the other one as the 4th one to make
- 48:45it across you can see. The moment in her eyes where
- 48:47she's like, we need to talk about this, but now it's not the
- 48:50moment. Yeah, exactly.
- 48:50I just wait for everybody to get across first so they all make
- 48:54it. One of them, I think it's Juno.
- 48:56She ends up taking the rope with her.
- 48:58She's the last one and she's like, we need to preserve the
- 49:02equipment that we have. So she's like taking the clamps
- 49:04off as she goes across. She's pulling that rope along
- 49:07with her. And when she gets to the last
- 49:09one, the old one like, starts to kind of like wiggle out of the
- 49:13rock and she falls. The other women grab the rope as
- 49:17she's falling, but they get really, Becca gets really bad
- 49:20rope burn on her hands. Yeah, it's.
- 49:21Oh God, you feel that? See this?
- 49:24This shit right here was so good already.
- 49:28But man, yeah. So they pull her back up and now
- 49:32this is where they find the breeze with the Yeah.
- 49:37And they're saying that like there was equipment there and
- 49:40somebody was like, oh, well that's a good sign then 'cause
- 49:42that means other people have seen it and they're like, well,
- 49:43this type hasn't been used in over 100 years.
- 49:47So probably not a good sign, actually.
- 49:50Which damn man? That's insane that like, they
- 49:53had that type of equipment 100 years ago.
- 49:55Were people seriously doing that type of climbing back then?
- 49:58I mean, I guess so, I guess. Yeah, I don't know.
- 50:01So this is where they find The Cave paintings.
- 50:03They see this Immaculate painting of a mountain.
- 50:06It is actually. Is really beautiful, like
- 50:09there's a nice fade to the painting they've gotten.
- 50:11They've gotten to Jesse. They it looks like the Mona.
- 50:14Lisa, they've got. Buffaloes.
- 50:16And like a little arrow, you are here.
- 50:19It's just a little Buffalo. It's just fun.
- 50:20It's like this is where our food is.
- 50:21This is where we are. This is this is my world.
- 50:24Yeah. Like this is what it's nice here
- 50:27dude. I'm really proud of my home.
- 50:28So I made a painting of my home if our cats.
- 50:30Could do paintings, this is the stuff that they would paint.
- 50:33Like, this is my house. This is where I'm at right now,
- 50:35and this is where my food is. Exactly.
- 50:40All right. So Juno takes out the lighter,
- 50:43and she finds that there's a draft down in The Cave system.
- 50:46Yes. So Holly gets super excited, and
- 50:48she goes chasing after what they think is a way out, except
- 50:53everybody else is trying to warn her.
- 50:54She's like, Holly, calm down. Yeah, you're getting way too
- 50:58ahead of yourself. But she's not listening.
- 50:59No, she sees a light. So she thinks that she's found
- 51:03her way out. Juno's like that's.
- 51:04Not daylight. And I'm like, I need to hear
- 51:06more about this. Don't worry, we'll hear more
- 51:07about it in a bit. Yeah.
- 51:09And she goes goes climbing for it and she is not taking any
- 51:13kind of fucking precautions at all and falls into a hole.
- 51:17And you remember a couple weeks ago when we talked about they
- 51:19live and Rowdy Roddy Piper goes down like a hill and then
- 51:23another hill and then another hill.
- 51:24And then he's like, I'm fine. Yep, this.
- 51:26But she's not fine. Yeah, this.
- 51:28But like, for real though, yeah, it's so funny that it was the
- 51:31one that's like, oh, we need to be taking all kinds of like
- 51:33extreme. No, she.
- 51:35Wasn't the one saying that Holly was?
- 51:37No, she wasn't. She's the one that was like
- 51:39going too fast in the line and saying that everything needs to
- 51:42be more dangerous. It was Becca.
- 51:43It was Becca telling You're not. Hearing me, I'm saying she was
- 51:47the one wanting to do the more extreme dives.
- 51:49Yeah, that was Holly. Yeah, you said.
- 51:52That she was the one wanting to take more precautions, no.
- 51:57I was saying she was the one that wanted to do the more
- 51:59extreme shit you. Definitely, said the word
- 52:02precaution. I'm pausing and.
- 52:03Replaying hold on, this is going to be for everybody, all right,
- 52:06So we just re listen to it and Travis is right, he said
- 52:10extreme. Precautions, he said.
- 52:12Extreme. And then she cut him off.
- 52:15That's what happened. She didn't let him finish his
- 52:18thoughts. So whatever she's down there,
- 52:23she's her. She has bone poking out of her
- 52:26skin, now compound. Fracture, yeah.
- 52:28Oh God, it's so upsetting. And they?
- 52:31The rest of them climb down there, they move her out of
- 52:34water and Sam, because she's a pre doctor, is splinting her leg
- 52:39and she's like I gotta put the bone back in first.
- 52:41She was splinted. I like.
- 52:43This she's like, you're gonna hate me and she's like, I
- 52:44fucking hate you. And she's like, I know.
- 52:47I I no, that's very real though. I remember I called my physical
- 52:52therapist a sadist at multiple times throughout my physical
- 52:55therapy appointments. But hey, I can walk again, so
- 52:57it's one of. Those moments where you're like,
- 52:58I know that this is going to suck and I know I'm going to
- 53:00hate it, but like, I know this is my only real option or else
- 53:03I'm going to die, Yeah. So yeah, while this is
- 53:06happening, Sarah is wandering and she sees something and she's
- 53:11trying to figure out what it is. But Junior brings her back to
- 53:14the group and she's like, I don't believe that you actually
- 53:16saw anything. Hey guys, listen to this stupid
- 53:18thing Sarah said. Isn't she just hallucinating?
- 53:21Yeah, she also found. Like an old helmet down there
- 53:23too, that she was like checking out.
- 53:24And more cave paintings, more art.
- 53:26Yeah, yeah. And the.
- 53:27Group is like, listen, we just need to prioritize getting Holly
- 53:30out. That's where we need to be
- 53:32focusing. So somehow they managed to get
- 53:34her. Far.
- 53:36Far. I don't know.
- 53:37So I'm not really sure how far, but they make a good distance.
- 53:41Like, yeah, they don't have to do any crawling, thankfully,
- 53:43yeah. And Juno explains that the light
- 53:46was actually phosphorus in the rock, and it's not real
- 53:49daylight. They're far too far underground.
- 53:51That's so fucking scary. I I that just having that be a
- 53:55thing if you're cave diving and like, oh, Fosfite, Oh my God,
- 53:58yeah, that would be paranoid. And then they come to this like
- 54:02cavern and they use the infrared on Holly's camera to look around
- 54:06and they are just like, it's a boneyard and not in like the
- 54:10colloquial like this is how we refer to a graveyard.
- 54:14It is bones on bones on bones on bones.
- 54:18And also, while they're doing that, they're looking around and
- 54:22the creature is right. Oh my God.
- 54:23This is a This is a good jump scare.
- 54:26I still maintain that the movie really didn't need these
- 54:28creatures, but it was they there were two very effective jump
- 54:31scares with them and this is one of them.
- 54:33It's. Strange it behaves strangely
- 54:36considering what we find out about the waiter because it's
- 54:39there over top of one of them and then like they all scream
- 54:42and it runs away like normally it would have attacked.
- 54:45Yeah. And so they're like, OK, cool,
- 54:47we need to pick up and leave. But as they're trying to leave,
- 54:49they're attacked. And then the group ends up being
- 54:51split up. Yeah, like.
- 54:54Straight up goes for Holly first, yeah, Bites her neck and
- 54:57she is just bleeding out, yeah. Juno is like trying to keep them
- 55:02away from her body. Beth is calling out to Sarah,
- 55:06who has fallen in a little stream.
- 55:08Yeah, she like fell. And hit her head.
- 55:09So she knocked herself out, Yeah.
- 55:11And as. Sarah is looking around like
- 55:13Juno is in a different part, and she's fighting off all of these
- 55:16different creatures. And in the moment she has
- 55:18momentum and she swings her pickaxe around and it gets Beth
- 55:21through the neck. Yeah, well, she.
- 55:23She was a badass. She is a badass in this movie.
- 55:25She fucking killed. She like grapples with this
- 55:28fucking thing and then ends up getting the pick and killing it.
- 55:31But then he accidentally kills Beth in the process.
- 55:33Yeah, Which I. I.
- 55:36Understand Beth being upset about it, but I think Beth
- 55:39should understand that like everything happening there, it's
- 55:43totally dark. Like that's a reasonable
- 55:46reaction I think. The main problem that they're
- 55:49all having is that Juno just walked away and let her die.
- 55:55She left her there. That's.
- 55:57True. And alive.
- 55:59You were right, yeah. She that's that's the.
- 56:00Thing because when after Sarah has seen Beth and Mercy killed
- 56:05her and she confronts, you know, she goes so you saw Beth, you
- 56:08saw her die. Oh yeah.
- 56:10And. She told him like, Oh yeah, the
- 56:11crawler's got her. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:13So she, like, fully lies about it.
- 56:15She'd like, it's the it's the lack of remorse and the lack of,
- 56:18like, respect for her friend. That's true.
- 56:21Yeah. Like she was defending Holly's
- 56:22dead body from the dwellers but couldn't even like do a thing to
- 56:28say Beth after putting an an axe through her throat.
- 56:31Those are protege. Protege Super.
- 56:32She meets Beth. Yeah.
- 56:36I guess I wasn't her best friend.
- 56:38Oh my God. Jesse, well done.
- 56:43Thank you. OK so they like Sarah sticks
- 56:50around, Sam and Rebecca are like moving forward on their own,
- 56:54they have like their own little way and they have encounters
- 56:57with the well monster and the monster attacks him but Juno
- 57:02appears and saves him by killing it.
- 57:05Meanwhile, Sarah has gone back and found Holly's body which
- 57:09they are now eating. Holly.
- 57:11She has to stay still to not alert them.
- 57:14So she's just having to sit there watching them eat it and
- 57:18she's. Got she's got Holly's camera
- 57:19still and so she can see like there's both human and animal
- 57:22remains down there and like she sees a bunch of like human
- 57:24skeletons. At one point, Becca and Sam are
- 57:27going through this little passage.
- 57:28And this is where the other really effective jump scare is
- 57:31because like, it's, it's a tight, it's like an like a 90°
- 57:36or more than a 90° angle that they have to go around.
- 57:39Yeah. So Becca goes around first,
- 57:40checks that it's clear, comes back, has Sam go first, Sam gets
- 57:44through all fine. Then Becca comes through and
- 57:46she's attacked and that you jumped.
- 57:47Really hard. There you went.
- 57:50I jumped too, I'm not gonna lie. But I didn't go back.
- 57:54That was the part where Juno saves them, by the way.
- 57:56Yes, yeah. And then they start shouting,
- 57:59looking through Sarah, and they're like, Oh my God, Juno,
- 58:01shut the fuck up. These things hunt by sound.
- 58:03I know. Yeah.
- 58:04Sarah. Gets to Holly's body and she
- 58:08takes this canister she has and takes a bandage from her leg as
- 58:12well as the axe handle, and she uses it to make a torch, which
- 58:16is really effective. Yeah, really smart.
- 58:19And then she yells. And then.
- 58:21They hear her yelling. Right now, Sarah's dead.
- 58:24Juno says that she saw Marks for a way out and she's like, we
- 58:30won't, I'm not leaving without Sarah.
- 58:31We've got to go get her. So Sarah finds Beth alive, but
- 58:36you know, only for a little bit longer.
- 58:38And she's like, listen, Juno did this.
- 58:41Do not trust her. Also please kill me.
- 58:43Also, take this. This is the thing that Paul gave
- 58:48Juno, which how did Beth get this?
- 58:50Yeah, did. She like is that a?
- 58:52Deleted scene I feel. Like there has to because I
- 58:55don't feel like Beth would have kept that secret from Sarah.
- 58:59No and. Continued to encourage the
- 59:01friendship between them if she knew that Juno was having an
- 59:03affair with Paul I. This isn't explained.
- 59:06It was like, how did she get that?
- 59:08It's it's very strange because I.
- 59:10Know she. We know that Juno was wearing
- 59:12that necklace, right? Yeah, and we know that Paul's
- 59:15motto is love every day, and then Juno has the love every day
- 59:18engraved on it. And so I wonder if Beth made
- 59:21that inference. But also at the same time, like
- 59:23that's not like really an individual.
- 59:25So again. Yeah.
- 59:28Live, laugh, love. Yeah.
- 59:29It's like, Oh my God, So deep. Yeah.
- 59:32Yeah. So I just, I, I don't know, I I
- 59:36wonder if there are we had seen somewhere that we need to see.
- 59:38Yeah, it's. Possible, but either way, Sarah
- 59:41got the message and she's bury her by then.
- 59:46Beth is like yeah, she's a killer so you know, watch out
- 59:49for her. One of the others, but also.
- 59:52Kill me. Yeah, please.
- 59:53Yeah, you know, put me out. Yeah.
- 59:55And Sarah's like, I can't do that.
- 59:56And that's like, I don't want to die from those crawlers and I am
- 1:00:00bleeding out anyway. It's a mercy kill.
- 1:00:02Man, Yeah, yeah, I get it in this situation.
- 1:00:05All right, So she doesn't. And then she is attacked so she
- 1:00:11runs and she ends up falling into a puddle of blood, which is
- 1:00:14the death metal cover band for Puddle of mud.
- 1:00:18Yeah, and this is like a female one because it finds like that
- 1:00:22was it's mate that cuz it goes over there and finds the body
- 1:00:26and it's like, Oh my God, you killed my husband.
- 1:00:28Yeah. So she's chasing Sarah now and
- 1:00:31they're fighting in the blood pool.
- 1:00:32Yeah. And she?
- 1:00:33Ends up she reaches a horn that's like on the shore and she
- 1:00:36uses it to stab the the creature and then she ends up killing
- 1:00:41another and screams. She screams.
- 1:00:45Oh, and this is where they all. Hear her and they're like ah,
- 1:00:47serious dead. Yeah, yeah, it was a victory.
- 1:00:49Scream everybody. So Juno goes to.
- 1:00:51Search and Sam panics and runs, so Becca has to follow her.
- 1:00:57Juno sees the creatures and she decides she's going to run a
- 1:01:00little bit more than what she was doing before Sam gets to the
- 1:01:04gap and she decides she's going to start climbing her way back.
- 1:01:08And as she does it, one of the crawlers is up there on the
- 1:01:10wall, kind of like a lizard, and it attacks her.
- 1:01:15And Juno and Becca are like trying to call her back, like
- 1:01:19trying to get her back. They're like, you don't have
- 1:01:21enough rope anyway, you've got to come back.
- 1:01:23And then the creature's attacking her and she stabs it,
- 1:01:25but it's too late because the creature has like like torn open
- 1:01:29her throat. It's only.
- 1:01:30That like it was a dead end that way.
- 1:01:32That was where it caved. That was like it was useless to
- 1:01:35go that way. Yeah, this was.
- 1:01:36Very much like a panic moment, yeah, but.
- 1:01:38Yeah, they ended up like it gets her, and then on her way down
- 1:01:43she gets it. So they all die.
- 1:01:45Yeah. And then another creature comes
- 1:01:47out and attacks Becca, pulls her down, and she's dead.
- 1:01:52She's just dead. She's just dragged.
- 1:01:53Away and Juno. Follows in to just see what's
- 1:01:56going on. Juno.
- 1:01:58Falls in the water and she finishes off one of the monsters
- 1:02:02down there that so like, I guess like down there, like in the
- 1:02:06gap, it was actually water, yeah.
- 1:02:08So she. Falls down in there and the one
- 1:02:10that Sam had stabbed what isn't dead, it attacks her and she
- 1:02:15finishes it off in the water and then.
- 1:02:16Sarah is there and she grabs Juno and she asks her about
- 1:02:20Becca and Beth. Yeah, and this is where she
- 1:02:24lies. She's like, Oh yeah, they got,
- 1:02:26they got Beth. They got.
- 1:02:27Everybody. Yeah.
- 1:02:28They're just, they're awesome. You saw her die.
- 1:02:29Yeah. And then they go looking for a
- 1:02:32way out and we have what I call the monster Royal Rumble, cuz
- 1:02:35it's just like one opponent comes out, another opponent
- 1:02:38comes in, Rumble in the. Tunnel, yeah.
- 1:02:42So they end up surviving. This was a really awesome, like,
- 1:02:44choreographed fight scene. Again, I'm not a person who,
- 1:02:47like super loves a ton of fight scenes, but this was really well
- 1:02:50choreographed and beautiful to watch.
- 1:02:51Yeah, they did a. Good job.
- 1:02:52I'm super impressed with their ability to fight these things.
- 1:02:55Like they they become badass for a moment like it's skilled
- 1:02:58fighters. Like I wonder if they took like
- 1:03:00MMA they seem like the type that would have done some like casual
- 1:03:02MMA I. Think they would do Krav Maga?
- 1:03:06Or whatever one is that the one that Steven Seagal does?
- 1:03:11You just do. Do the chop.
- 1:03:13There we go. Yeah.
- 1:03:15I mean, it's essentially what happens here.
- 1:03:16They just, like, fuck them up. So until they see that there's
- 1:03:21too many of them and. They have like a moment.
- 1:03:25The monsters respect that. They need to have their final
- 1:03:27moment here, and Sarah picks up the pickaxe and she kind of
- 1:03:31shifts her hand a little bit and the necklace falls and Juno just
- 1:03:36knows, just gives her a. Look a look, it's like I know, I
- 1:03:39know what happened and. Sarah, this is fucking cold.
- 1:03:44Yeah, she this is the opposite of a mercy kill.
- 1:03:48She takes that pickaxe and kneecaps Juno.
- 1:03:53Yeah, God. Damn man, she just pickaxes her
- 1:03:56fucking leg and then she can't walk anymore.
- 1:03:58She's immobile and she's. Immediately overwhelmed by the
- 1:04:00creatures as Sarah leaves and Sarah's running through it, she
- 1:04:05tries to climb her way out and ends up falling.
- 1:04:08She wakes up in the water, and she sees a light, and she climbs
- 1:04:11up a pile of bone and she gets out of the earth, and she can't
- 1:04:16believe it. And she goes running for the
- 1:04:19car. And because they'd left the keys
- 1:04:20and the visor, she's able to get in there and drive away.
- 1:04:23And as she gets to the highway, she pulls over and takes a
- 1:04:28moment to sob. A truck honks its horn at her,
- 1:04:32drives very, very close. And she's like, OK, it's OK,
- 1:04:36it's OK. And she turns around and Dunju
- 1:04:38nose in her car. It's a ghost and then you see
- 1:04:41her, she's screaming, does an. Up close, cut to her face, Yeah,
- 1:04:45which if you were watching the UK version, then pulls back away
- 1:04:50and we see she never actually made it out of the case.
- 1:04:52Yep, she. Died down there, but in this in
- 1:04:55this version, she's alive, yeah. And she just sees ghosts.
- 1:04:58Now and also. Leaves them open to do a sequel,
- 1:05:01which they did end up doing. We've never seen it, but I know
- 1:05:04that they like, yeah. I've not.
- 1:05:06Seen it. OK, this is maybe.
- 1:05:08We should just like us talking. About the car last night, yeah.
- 1:05:11You're right. Yeah.
- 1:05:13OK, So, yeah, that's how it ends.
- 1:05:15So what are you gonna rate it now?
- 1:05:18I'm gonna. I'm gonna bump it up to 9.25,
- 1:05:22OK? Cool.
- 1:05:23Yeah, I'm gonna keep mine 9.5 Got it.
- 1:05:27This is just one of the rare super effective movies that just
- 1:05:30got Yes, I can recommend this to anybody, but there's not a
- 1:05:35single person that I don't think this movie will have an impact
- 1:05:37on. Yes, it's not.
- 1:05:38One of those where I'm like, I don't know if this is the right
- 1:05:42kind of movie for, like, everybody.
- 1:05:44There's gonna be something scary for everybody.
- 1:05:46Exactly. Yeah, it just like it gets those
- 1:05:49like animalistic fears that we have, like, you know, oh God, it
- 1:05:54touches. On all of those primal
- 1:05:55instincts, yeah. Well, it's so effective, so
- 1:05:58cool. What about Talia?
- 1:06:01What did she rate this thing? Oh man.
- 1:06:03So Talia, as I talked about kind of towards the beginning of
- 1:06:06this, she was incredibly active during this movie.
- 1:06:10She immediately pulled out Ralphie.
- 1:06:13And Ralphie is her loudest squeaky toy.
- 1:06:15It sounds like, you know, the little things at birthday
- 1:06:19parties and New Year's it. It sounds like that, except she
- 1:06:22can squeak it over and. Over again.
- 1:06:25And Travis is like, I don't, she's so happy and I don't want
- 1:06:29to take it away from her. And he, like, kind of offered a
- 1:06:31gentle trade and she accepted the gentle trade.
- 1:06:35But then she, you know, was just kind of lying there pouting.
- 1:06:39And then she needed to go out at 19 minutes and 12 seconds, and
- 1:06:44then she needed to. Stop and play.
- 1:06:46I had to do the game where I put my hand underneath her chin so
- 1:06:49she can't grab it. Yeah.
- 1:06:51And then I thought maybe she was a cave dweller because she
- 1:06:55needed to go out again at One O 5.
- 1:06:57She was like, I can't watch all of my people die.
- 1:07:00Yeah. So Talia was like on one, I
- 1:07:03think she thinks this is a really effective movie.
- 1:07:05She was very afraid. And she was like, why would you
- 1:07:08go in the Earth instead of just eating the earth?
- 1:07:11You know what? She's got a great point, so I
- 1:07:14think. Talia.
- 1:07:15I think Talia gives us the perfect ten.
- 1:07:16I think so too. I think it really affected her,
- 1:07:19I think Zoe. I know this isn't going to be
- 1:07:22like the most creative one, it's the only.
- 1:07:25Logical one? Yeah, the the.
- 1:07:26Dwellers. Yeah, and my reasoning for this,
- 1:07:30though, is because of the dead moose.
- 1:07:32And she's got her toy mooses that she hunts around the house.
- 1:07:35We. When we were watching it last
- 1:07:37night, you made a great point. Whenever they're down there and
- 1:07:40they don't know that they're there and they're crawling on
- 1:07:42Sarah's head like, Oh my God, it's exactly like Zoe in the
- 1:07:45mornings. She.
- 1:07:47Like, and I don't think she does things to try and wake us up,
- 1:07:51don't get me wrong, but there are times where it feels like
- 1:07:53she's just trying to get comfortable on the bed and
- 1:07:56doesn't understand that stepping on our face doesn't feel good.
- 1:08:00Yeah. So yeah, Dweller all the way.
- 1:08:04It's yeah. 100% yes. All right, Who did you relate
- 1:08:10to? I'm going to say Sam because
- 1:08:14I've got an older sister and this is very much like the vibe
- 1:08:17in college because she'd be like come hang out with me and my
- 1:08:19friends. And I always felt like the baby
- 1:08:21of the group because I was that they were all very like
- 1:08:23welcoming. And it was always like a nice
- 1:08:25fun time. Except for the one time I got
- 1:08:27kicked out of Madison Garden because it became 9:00 and they
- 1:08:32don't allow you inside if you're under 21 after 9.
- 1:08:36So but yeah, I, I definitely related to that.
- 1:08:39And also my sister and I are obsessed with each other.
- 1:08:42So their their vibes. OK, I felt it.
- 1:08:47Who did I relate to? I think I related to Beth
- 1:08:52because I liked her as a good support friend.
- 1:08:56Yeah, if somebody killed me, I would be like that person
- 1:08:59fucking did it. They fucked me over.
- 1:09:01Kill them. Avenge me.
- 1:09:04Yeah. I don't care if it was.
- 1:09:05An accident. You killed them for me and they
- 1:09:09cheated, Yeah. Also, she sucks.
- 1:09:12Yeah. Yeah, I'm just burning bridges
- 1:09:16on my way out. Yeah.
- 1:09:17I'm going down and I'm taking everybody with me, creating all.
- 1:09:20Kinds of chaos, Yeah. OK, cool.
- 1:09:24We didn't really say a change, but we've kind of already made a
- 1:09:26known throughout the episode. Just so like, if there's one
- 1:09:30change, like just, you know, you don't have to do The Cave
- 1:09:32flowers. They're fine.
- 1:09:33Yeah, but you don't have to, like, take it away.
- 1:09:35I want to see what that movie's like.
- 1:09:37Yeah. Yeah, I want to see the cuz it
- 1:09:40like we said, cave scary, cave scary, cave scary.
- 1:09:43Cave scary. That is our tagline, I think,
- 1:09:45yeah. Cave.
- 1:09:45Scary cave. Scary all right so you don't
- 1:09:50know the sequel so how would you want this to actually unfold
- 1:09:54after this so let's stick with the ending that we got or we can
- 1:09:59go with The Cave so choose your own adventure here we have a
- 1:10:01fork in the road I. Wanna go with the original
- 1:10:04version where she's she's in. The game in The Cave, OK.
- 1:10:07So I like to imagine because they've filed this flight plan
- 1:10:14and they haven't returned. So, you know, a rescue mission
- 1:10:17has started. Families have been notified, but
- 1:10:20they can't find anybody. Like they're nowhere along the
- 1:10:23tracks and maybe somebody close to them.
- 1:10:28Maybe it's like a cuz we, we didn't even talk about the watch
- 1:10:31that Sam's boyfriend gave. Oh yeah.
- 1:10:33I was like making sound, you know, maybe he like had a brief
- 1:10:39run in with Juno at some point and I was like, I just don't
- 1:10:42trust this lady. So maybe he was like secretly
- 1:10:44following along behind or something.
- 1:10:47I've got. One, So you know how we were
- 1:10:50debating about these vehicles, What if one of them is a rental
- 1:10:54and they're tagged? Oh, so they're like.
- 1:10:57These fucking assholes didn't return the rental.
- 1:11:00Let's go collect it. That's a lot.
- 1:11:01Better than my idea. OK.
- 1:11:03Yeah. So.
- 1:11:05They do that, they notice that, and then a rescue team is sent
- 1:11:09to rescue her. Sarah has learned to navigate
- 1:11:13the caves. She feeds off of the scraps that
- 1:11:18they bring down there, so whenever they move along, she
- 1:11:21goes over there and just eats what little she can.
- 1:11:23And she's going to. Have a moment where the first
- 1:11:25rescue person she sees, she does like a Juno.
- 1:11:28So we get like a full circle in her story.
- 1:11:30Yeah, a little bit. She does an accidental Juno
- 1:11:33accidentally kills. Them.
- 1:11:34Yeah, yeah. Except maybe he's not dead and
- 1:11:37she stays behind to try and help him.
- 1:11:39Yeah, she like. Yeah, I'm not that type of
- 1:11:41person. Yeah.
- 1:11:43So yeah, I mean, let's just see how it goes from there, OK?
- 1:11:46It's a rescue mission type too. Yeah.
- 1:11:48Yeah, OK. Cool, cool.
- 1:11:51We already talked about tagline. Yeah, tagline.
- 1:11:54So, temporary reviews. OK, all right.
- 1:11:56What? You got for me so.
- 1:11:59I found us a IMDb review and you knew.
- 1:12:02That we're both very fond of this movie, so I'm assuming it's
- 1:12:05a less positive review. Yeah, I.
- 1:12:07Wanted to find the critic review but I couldn't find any good
- 1:12:10critic reviews because we haven't done one in a long time
- 1:12:12on the show but I went with one from March of 2007.
- 1:12:16OK it's a 3 out of 10. It's titled Rapid Descent.
- 1:12:22After being told again and again I should watch this movie
- 1:12:24because it's so creepy and gory and will scare me rigid tonight,
- 1:12:29I watched it. The scent is right.
- 1:12:31Indeed. It started well.
- 1:12:32The whole cave. Such potholing plot could have
- 1:12:35been great until the monsters came along.
- 1:12:38They instantly reminded me of Voldemort from Harry Potter.
- 1:12:42Scary to kids maybe. To me they simply looked like
- 1:12:45daylight starved humans with bad not menacing teeth and made
- 1:12:49sounds like a cat in pain. From that point on it got
- 1:12:52steadily worse, less and less impressive.
- 1:12:54It didn't make me even nearly jump once, and the only thing I
- 1:12:58found creepy was the fact they were deep in a cave.
- 1:13:00Had the main plot unfolded with them fighting among each other
- 1:13:03and the battle of friendship tested then it would have held
- 1:13:06its own, but as it is it sucked. As for the gore, yes, lots of
- 1:13:11blood, but rapid camera panning and shutter speed settings put
- 1:13:13paid to any real gore. I put it no more glory than the
- 1:13:18original Friday the 13th, which was a much better movie.
- 1:13:21I give it two thumbs down. I only wish I had more thumbs.
- 1:13:24OK, so I think we can both say that we agree that the monsters
- 1:13:29aren't needed. Yeah.
- 1:13:31And you know, two more thumbs, two thumbs down.
- 1:13:35He only wanted one more thumb because he's a three.
- 1:13:40Sorry. No, Yeah.
- 1:13:41Like, I mean, I, I mean, I get it.
- 1:13:44I and I can totally see how that will take some people out of the
- 1:13:47movie. They'll not become fans of it
- 1:13:49because of that change. Well, and it's one.
- 1:13:51Of those things that like, they really built it up as this one
- 1:13:55type of movie, you know, it's the friendships being tested.
- 1:13:59They're already under great strain.
- 1:14:00And then they're underground as well.
- 1:14:03And things just keep going wrong.
- 1:14:05And it's, it feels very much like, you know, in X where they
- 1:14:10make the joke about Psycho, how it becomes a completely
- 1:14:13different movie halfway through. And it's kind of like what this
- 1:14:16movie does. Like it's like, OK, well, you
- 1:14:18followed this whole dramatic storyline, but now monsters.
- 1:14:22Yeah. And that's one of those things
- 1:14:25that you can either like accept or it completely throws you off.
- 1:14:28And I was willing to accept it. I don't need it though.
- 1:14:31And I can get how that would throw a person off if they've
- 1:14:34gotten really invested in wanting to see the resolution
- 1:14:38between friends that isn't done in by like is supernatural
- 1:14:43creature. Yeah, that's why I went.
- 1:14:44With this review, because I feel like that's a legit thing, I can
- 1:14:47totally see people being turned off from this movie because of
- 1:14:49that. And they even acknowledged how
- 1:14:51great the other parts of the movie were.
- 1:14:53Yeah. So.
- 1:14:53Yeah. All right, So let's take it over
- 1:14:56to listeners. Let's see what you guys have to
- 1:14:58say. So let's start off on Instagram
- 1:15:01with our buddy Michael E Howard, who says in 2007 a friend of
- 1:15:06mine told me I had to watch this new DVD called The Descent.
- 1:15:09He gave it to me under the stipulation that I watch it in
- 1:15:12the dark. I am so glad.
- 1:15:15How would he? Know.
- 1:15:17How would he know? Michael?
- 1:15:18You don't have to cave into that kind of pressure.
- 1:15:20See what I did there? Goddamnit I'm so glad you did.
- 1:15:25This movie terrified me and still does to this day.
- 1:15:27The claustrophobia, the creatures, the darkness and pure
- 1:15:30terror of being trapped in an unknown system of caves makes
- 1:15:33this movie a top notch horror movie.
- 1:15:35This cast is believable, especially Sean McDonald in the
- 1:15:38role of Sarah. I do have to go with the
- 1:15:40original ending, but The American does set up for a
- 1:15:44sequel that isn't actually bad. 10 out of 10 for me.
- 1:15:47Nice. Really well.
- 1:15:48Done, man. Yeah, you know, and that's true.
- 1:15:50Like if if you're going to do a sequel that does at least set it
- 1:15:53up for it in a different. I mean, we have an idea.
- 1:15:56But you know, I'm curious to know how this actually goes like
- 1:15:59sequel wise, the real thing. I need to watch it.
- 1:16:02I feel like we should do. I'm curious.
- 1:16:06Yeah, well. But the lights off sounds
- 1:16:08awesome too. That that's a great way to 1st
- 1:16:10experience this movie. And that's just, that's a wise
- 1:16:12decision. You got a good friend there.
- 1:16:15The good news is we have lots of additional lighting around the
- 1:16:17room. That's true, yeah.
- 1:16:20All right, Next up we have Marnie who says a 2000s horror
- 1:16:25gym. And you know what?
- 1:16:27That's true. Actually this is probably like,
- 1:16:28I know people hate on the odds for horror, but I don't think
- 1:16:31anybody can really this say. It was different from the other
- 1:16:35movies at the time. Yeah, exactly.
- 1:16:37It does stand out, yeah. I mean, cuz yeah, the 2000s were
- 1:16:41I feel like it has a distinct feel, but this doesn't have that
- 1:16:45feel to it. Yeah, Yeah, It's really nice.
- 1:16:47All right, next we have Ward Zombie on Twitter.
- 1:16:51Who says I love this movie. The cost in The Cave with
- 1:16:54monsters is my favorite theme for horror.
- 1:16:56This one was great. Well, 2000.
- 1:16:58Five must have been amazing. Yeah, dude.
- 1:17:01I got you three other movies lined up right there.
- 1:17:03Go check them out buddy. One of them for sure on Tubby.
- 1:17:07This one was great. Good mixed casts of characters,
- 1:17:10nothing gets too over explained. Well paced.
- 1:17:12Overall very good. Recommended highly.
- 1:17:15OK. Yeah, I, I mean, I agree It is,
- 1:17:17it is very well paced. Yeah, I mean.
- 1:17:20It's an amazing setting too. The Half Price Horror podcast
- 1:17:23says it's the scariest movie you can possibly imagine, even
- 1:17:26before the inbred cannibal monsters show up.
- 1:17:29A perfect film, although it's important to watch the UK
- 1:17:31edition to get the full picture. I agree.
- 1:17:34I just thought of a. Different sequel this but like
- 1:17:38another group of cave divers but it's also a cabin in the woods
- 1:17:41tie in when he said inbred cannibal killers.
- 1:17:46That would be good. Yeah, I could see that.
- 1:17:50All right. Final reviews from our buddy
- 1:17:54Chad. OK, I was gonna.
- 1:17:55Say, I know I saw him send it in before, yes.
- 1:17:57So Chad says the Descent will keep you on edge and rack your
- 1:18:01nerves from the opening scene until the very last shot.
- 1:18:04Claustrophobic, an entirely female led the nimble direction
- 1:18:07by Neil Marshall is something he has not.
- 1:18:11He has not eclipsed before it or since.
- 1:18:14Also brilliant in The Cave as symbolism for the journey
- 1:18:17through the female anatomy, starting with lungs then to the
- 1:18:20stomach. The bloody pit with white dudes,
- 1:18:24white dude monsters that want to kill is not subtle, but I love
- 1:18:28Chad. Can I just gently point out that
- 1:18:31lungs and stomach are not unique to the female anatomy?
- 1:18:37I, I, I get it. I get what he's saying, but I
- 1:18:42love it. 10 out of 10 for me. Never needed a sequel, all
- 1:18:46right? But.
- 1:18:48I'm curious about the sequel now.
- 1:18:50Yeah. It's one of those things that I
- 1:18:52feel like I need to see it just to see what they did with it.
- 1:18:54I feel like I. Watched it, but I can't remember
- 1:18:57anything. So maybe I didn't watch it.
- 1:18:58I don't know. But that wasn't, you know,
- 1:19:00that's, that's an interesting review.
- 1:19:02I would have never even thought of that.
- 1:19:04I wonder if that was intentional.
- 1:19:05I wouldn't have thought. Of any sapphic imagery with
- 1:19:07this, but I generally tend to stay away from the.
- 1:19:11From the. Genitalia related metaphors in
- 1:19:14most movies. What if?
- 1:19:15In The Cave, The Cave paintings, the mountain had boobs.
- 1:19:19That's what the Buffaloes are, Yeah.
- 1:19:23That's why they got one on each side.
- 1:19:24Forgive me. People I can't see this is what
- 1:19:26boobs I think might be this is what my boobs.
- 1:19:29Feel like buffaloes. OK, cool.
- 1:19:34That's it for our reviews. Yeah.
- 1:19:35So that is it for this week's episode with everybody and
- 1:19:38that's. Actually, it for August, and I
