- 0:00Speaker 1: To the Beacon plumbing Hothine we go where we are
- 0:02Speaker 1: pleased and thankful to be joined by Terrence Samuel, busy
- 0:06Speaker 1: receivers coach on the recruiting trail for the University of Kansas,
- 0:09Speaker 1: talking to us from Texas. He's the college position coach
- 0:12Speaker 1: for Seahawks sixth round pick Emmanuel Henderson. Junior coach, Samuel,
- 0:17Speaker 1: thanks for joining us while you're busy. Appreciated. How are you, sir.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I'm doing well and it's pleasure to be on with
- 0:24Speaker 2: you and talking about Emmanuel.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Thank you. The Seahawks told us that they GPS at
- 0:31Speaker 1: Kansas measure Emmanuel Henderson at twenty two point nine miles
- 0:36Speaker 1: an hour, like faster than you can drive through a
- 0:37Speaker 1: school zone in the morning. So we know that part
- 0:40Speaker 1: of him. We know him as a punt gunner, as
- 0:42Speaker 1: a punt returner. There's a job opening in Seattle for that. Well,
- 0:45Speaker 1: we don't know about him as as a wide receiver.
- 0:47Speaker 1: And you were his receivers coach. What can you tell
- 0:51Speaker 1: us about him as a ready for the NFL wide receiver.
- 0:56Speaker 2: Well, he's coming from Alabama and I think that's probably
- 0:58Speaker 2: where the whole thing's got to start. He was trained there.
- 1:03Speaker 2: You know, he was in a room that had some
- 1:05Speaker 2: really really good wide receivers. And you know when you
- 1:08Speaker 2: start in this portal and you're looking for players, generally
- 1:11Speaker 2: you're looking for guys with a lot of a lot
- 1:14Speaker 2: of reps. Well, he didn't have a lot of reps.
- 1:17Speaker 2: So what you saw on film was just a guy
- 1:20Speaker 2: that went with great effort. You know, was technically sound.
- 1:24Speaker 2: You know, he just needed the opportunity. So it was
- 1:28Speaker 2: a bit of a roll of dice, a little bit
- 1:31Speaker 2: to go after. But once you saw what he did
- 1:34Speaker 2: on film and how people raved abou him at Alabama, Uh,
- 1:37Speaker 2: this guy had the ability to make plays at a
- 1:40Speaker 2: high level, catch the ball, run pass dds, and give
- 1:44Speaker 2: us something good to our office that we didn't have.
- 1:46Speaker 2: So it was a no brainer for us. But bottom line,
- 1:49Speaker 2: I mean he has he's been taught to run routes,
- 1:54Speaker 2: create great separation. That's top part of his route. He
- 1:58Speaker 2: was able to you know at the line of screen.
- 2:00Speaker 2: He's just not going to touch him in a phone book.
- 2:02Speaker 2: I mean, he's just that bad. So I said, my
- 2:05Speaker 2: biggest job was just continue his growth conten years understanding
- 2:09Speaker 2: make sure it's football like Q was on part with
- 2:12Speaker 2: what was going to be necessary at the next level,
- 2:14Speaker 2: and he did everything, I mean, and he got himself
- 2:16Speaker 2: drafted behind him.
- 2:18Speaker 1: He's had Manuel Henderson is six pounds. Coach. How did
- 2:22Speaker 1: you use him in Kansas's offense? Was he mainly an
- 2:26Speaker 1: X maybe excise or was he on the line? Was
- 2:29Speaker 1: he in the slot? Do you move him around a lot?
- 2:30Speaker 1: How'd you use him?
- 2:32Speaker 2: That's the key. You got to move guys around, and
- 2:34Speaker 2: you got to move a guy that has speed and ability,
- 2:36Speaker 2: and he's your main target. And you know he was
- 2:39Speaker 2: our main target. We needed to be able to put
- 2:41Speaker 2: him in different spots and get him against linebackers or get
- 2:44Speaker 2: him against safetys and and take advantage of his speed.
- 2:47Speaker 2: So we used him in everything we could. I mean,
- 2:51Speaker 2: even if there was you know, uh well, of course,
- 2:53Speaker 2: you know, with special teams and things of that nature,
- 2:55Speaker 2: but everything we could use it for what we did.
- 2:58Speaker 1: How much did you have to I don't want to
- 3:00Speaker 1: say fight, but because he was such a great special
- 3:03Speaker 1: team stand out on punt punt return, took off turn,
- 3:07Speaker 1: did you have to seed some of his offensive reps
- 3:09Speaker 1: and snaps because of all his special teams prowess?
- 3:13Speaker 2: No, No, that's the one thing about he man. I mean,
- 3:16Speaker 2: he'd rather be taken off of offense to get a
- 3:19Speaker 2: special team's rep, you know, because he knows the importance
- 3:22Speaker 2: and the impact of it. But us, no, he can
- 3:26Speaker 2: run all day. That was never a question. We had
- 3:29Speaker 2: to be smart and just make sure during practice during spring,
- 3:33Speaker 2: during the fall camp, and we didn't overuse him because
- 3:36Speaker 2: you know, you needed him much more important to us
- 3:39Speaker 2: in the back half of the season. So his his
- 3:42Speaker 2: ability his conditioning is really outstanding, and you know, and
- 3:46Speaker 2: then his ability to go make plays in the special teams.
- 3:50Speaker 2: I mean, I haven't had a guy I've coached for
- 3:52Speaker 2: a while, and I haven't had a guy that understood
- 3:55Speaker 2: that that third part of the game like he did
- 3:58Speaker 2: and different in that third out of the game.
- 4:01Speaker 3: Coach, from a coaching perspective, what separates his speed from
- 4:04Speaker 3: other receivers you've coached over the years.
- 4:09Speaker 2: The fact that he's not he he has speed, but
- 4:13Speaker 2: he's willing to be physical. Generally, when you have a
- 4:15Speaker 2: guy that's got some speed, uh in real quickness, then
- 4:19Speaker 2: they shy away from being the physical. And like I said,
- 4:23Speaker 2: I really took my hat to some of the guys
- 4:25Speaker 2: that coached him at Alabama because you know, when I
- 4:28Speaker 2: got him and he started to show him, you know,
- 4:30Speaker 2: other parts of that physical game, that was an easy deal.
- 4:33Speaker 2: I didn't have to start from base one teaching him
- 4:36Speaker 2: how to release. Hey, it was just adding the physical component.
- 4:39Speaker 2: Then he did that just as easily because he wants
- 4:42Speaker 2: to get better. So and that I'm gonna say this
- 4:44Speaker 2: that that's going to be probably the best thing that
- 4:45Speaker 2: you're going to have with in that Seattle is every
- 4:48Speaker 2: week he's going to get better. He's going to find
- 4:50Speaker 2: a way to get better. So he'll find a way
- 4:52Speaker 2: to maximize that speed. And the question about that better guy,
- 4:56Speaker 2: he's one of those guys that adding that physicality to
- 4:59Speaker 2: his component is his releases and things that I make
- 5:01Speaker 2: that took his game to a whole another level.
- 5:04Speaker 3: We also know that he made an impact on special teams.
- 5:07Speaker 3: How important do you think that versatility will be for
- 5:11Speaker 3: him trying to earn his role with the Seahawks at
- 5:14Speaker 3: the next level.
- 5:16Speaker 2: I mean, it's the most important thing. It's what we
- 5:20Speaker 2: talk to you. I mean at the college level. I
- 5:22Speaker 2: mean it is about having wide receivers become excellent in
- 5:27Speaker 2: special teams. Well, I mean I tell all my wide
- 5:30Speaker 2: receivers one and two. Wide receiver one, WHDe receiver two.
- 5:33Speaker 2: You may they may not have to get on special
- 5:36Speaker 2: teams for three, four, five, and six, which is you
- 5:39Speaker 2: better be on special teams, so you better learn to
- 5:41Speaker 2: enjoy it and maximize it. You know, if you're wanted
- 5:44Speaker 2: a better athletes on the team, which most wide receivers are,
- 5:47Speaker 2: then you're going to be expected to be on special teams.
- 5:49Speaker 2: So you need to come to the understanding that I
- 5:52Speaker 2: need to maximize that third of the game.
- 5:54Speaker 1: This is the advice of Terrence Samuel joining us from a
- 5:57Speaker 1: recruiting trip in Texas. He's the receivers coach for the
- 6:00Speaker 1: University of Kansas. On the Beacon Plumbing hotline here in
- 6:02Speaker 1: ninety three point three, KJRFM coach Samiel, you mentioned you've
- 6:06Speaker 1: done this for a day or three. You coached Cody
- 6:09Speaker 1: White at Michigan State, and I understand you also recruited
- 6:12Speaker 1: Ricky White the third to Michigan State before he then
- 6:16Speaker 1: you left for UNLV for a year and he event
- 6:18Speaker 1: going to UNLV after you had departed the Rebel staff.
- 6:22Speaker 1: What can you tell us about Cody White? First of all,
- 6:26Speaker 1: I know his background, but what he was as a
- 6:28Speaker 1: receiver in what you noticed and making an NFL receiver.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Same with Ricky White, who was a special team stand
- 6:34Speaker 1: up much like Henderson at UNLV, but maybe not as
- 6:37Speaker 1: known as for his receiving.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Well, I mean with Cody recruiting him in Detroit, I
- 6:45Speaker 2: mean going to watching some of these basketball games, there
- 6:49Speaker 2: was an aggressive components there that he expressed very well.
- 6:53Speaker 2: And you know he was dominated. Will you see guys
- 6:56Speaker 2: that are just dominated on the basketball court. He was
- 7:01Speaker 2: that way. But he was also intelligent. So that made
- 7:05Speaker 2: it to where I could play him as a true freshman.
- 7:07Speaker 2: He was intelligent, he was aggressive, and he was going
- 7:10Speaker 2: to learn. As his athletic skills continued to grow, he
- 7:13Speaker 2: was good to continue to get better. So he's one
- 7:17Speaker 2: of the smartest guys that I've coached and just one
- 7:21Speaker 2: of the better people on him and Emmanuel just two
- 7:24Speaker 2: of the best people you're going to come around, come around.
- 7:27Speaker 2: And like I said, I mean, Cody had his dad,
- 7:29Speaker 2: you know, Shelby White, you know who's you know, a
- 7:32Speaker 2: player personnel over Pittsburgh Steelers, and so he's been a part.
- 7:35Speaker 2: He grew up with the game, so you knew he
- 7:40Speaker 2: was going to have success at the next level and
- 7:42Speaker 2: special teams wise, he was going back to my best.
- 7:44Speaker 2: So I was blessed to be able to have Tody
- 7:47Speaker 2: and have him played. I just wish he wouldn't have
- 7:49Speaker 2: got injured. A couple of those guys.
- 7:51Speaker 1: And Ricky White, we know him here as a special
- 7:54Speaker 1: teamer so far, but as a wide receiver.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Oh, now, Ricky was. I watched him him and coming
- 8:00Speaker 2: out of Atlanta, I mean, you know, winning the state
- 8:03Speaker 2: championships and thingsville nature being along for that ride. I mean,
- 8:07Speaker 2: he knew he was going to be special. I mean
- 8:09Speaker 2: he just once he put his mind to it, you know,
- 8:12Speaker 2: and he made plays and he made plays, you know.
- 8:15Speaker 2: I mean I got a chance of watching, you know,
- 8:17Speaker 2: his res shirt freshman year when he was a missions
- 8:19Speaker 2: state up watching from from a distance, but he was
- 8:21Speaker 2: still making play. So I knew that guy was going
- 8:25Speaker 2: to be good and have the ability to play at
- 8:27Speaker 2: the next level, just because I mean, everything just kind
- 8:30Speaker 2: of came very easy to him, you know. But he
- 8:33Speaker 2: was still he was aggressive just as well, but it
- 8:35Speaker 2: came easy. I mean, just natural coordination and I coordination
- 8:40Speaker 2: attacking the ball just I mean he's kind of that
- 8:42Speaker 2: point guard type wide receiver, just smooth. So and he
- 8:46Speaker 2: had that in high school and he really made a
- 8:49Speaker 2: lot of people look bad in high school. So I'm
- 8:51Speaker 2: glad to see he's still doing that.
- 8:53Speaker 1: Coach Terrence Samuel, wide receivers coach from Kansas. The two
- 8:57Speaker 1: oh six on our text line is asking about Emmanuel
- 9:01Speaker 1: Henderson Junior's competitive nature. The Seahawks made it a priority
- 9:04Speaker 1: on their draft board to draft guys who would they
- 9:07Speaker 1: believed would not be in awe of coming into a
- 9:10Speaker 1: Super Bowl championship team and would compete in practices with
- 9:14Speaker 1: Super Bowl champions Where does Emanual Henderson Junior fit on
- 9:18Speaker 1: your competitiveness scale?
- 9:21Speaker 2: Okay, so simply, Kert, when you take a gun, Yeah,
- 9:25Speaker 2: you just ran down and third down or whatever, and
- 9:28Speaker 2: you go on fourth down and you're asked to go
- 9:30Speaker 2: down and run and make a tackle of a of
- 9:32Speaker 2: a plumber turner from in college football and make the tackle.
- 9:37Speaker 2: That should show you just how tough you know your
- 9:39Speaker 2: hindustry is. He accepts that challenge. There's not going to
- 9:43Speaker 2: be He believes in his speed, he believes in his
- 9:45Speaker 2: skill set. So you know, and if you kick him off,
- 9:48Speaker 2: he don't come after you. So I don't see him
- 9:51Speaker 2: having any issue with being able to play at a
- 9:54Speaker 2: high level, whether it's the bottom of the NFL or
- 9:58Speaker 2: the top of the Nfl' right to the occasion. And
- 10:01Speaker 2: he'll make it easy for you, you know, as a coach.
- 10:04Speaker 1: So you've been doing this for a long time, sir.
- 10:06Speaker 1: How much pride do you take in Emmanuel Henderson and
- 10:09Speaker 1: Cody White Ricky White, players you've recruited, given them an
- 10:13Speaker 1: opportunity in college football to then become in the NFL.
- 10:16Speaker 1: And and what kind of moment is that for you
- 10:18Speaker 1: when guys like Emmanuel Henderson get drafted.
- 10:23Speaker 2: Everything. I didn't get into this job for the money.
- 10:25Speaker 2: I got to get into this job to coach players
- 10:28Speaker 2: and and get them from point A to point B
- 10:31Speaker 2: with efficient technique, you know, helping me. I mean, the
- 10:35Speaker 2: the drugs, so to speak for me, is seeing a
- 10:40Speaker 2: kid take a concept and master it and mode it
- 10:42Speaker 2: and make it here. When you when you see that,
- 10:45Speaker 2: I mean, that's that's fun, you know. And then they
- 10:47Speaker 2: come back and they tell you how coach that works,
- 10:50Speaker 2: you know, and you just made a DV look bad.
- 10:52Speaker 2: I mean, that's that's a drug that you can't, you know,
- 10:54Speaker 2: you can't get enough of And so the other component
- 10:57Speaker 2: of seeing them matures as individuals and being able to
- 11:01Speaker 2: start them on the Instagram, see their family, you know,
- 11:04Speaker 2: seeing me become the good husbands and you know, good
- 11:07Speaker 2: dads and stuff like that. Those are that's why I
- 11:09Speaker 2: got into this game. So it's it's so thrilling for
- 11:14Speaker 2: me to be able to sit back and see these guys,
- 11:17Speaker 2: you know, all the guys that I've been able to
- 11:18Speaker 2: coach and give them to the league. I like to say,
- 11:20Speaker 2: I helped a lot of guys get some money. But
- 11:23Speaker 2: anybody pay me, you know, I like to I need
- 11:26Speaker 2: a trip to a year for something, you know. But
- 11:29Speaker 2: I mean to say, those those guys are all doing
- 11:31Speaker 2: well and I can't do nothing to be proud of them.
- 11:33Speaker 2: And like I said, I tell them all they say,
- 11:35Speaker 2: the only thing I want from the middle of the
- 11:36Speaker 2: jersey I'm to put up on the wall.
- 11:39Speaker 3: Last thing for me, coach, what kind of development did
- 11:42Speaker 3: you see from Emanuel throughout the season that the Seahawks
- 11:45Speaker 3: may not even recognize yet?
- 11:49Speaker 2: Well, you know, I mean, like I said, we put
- 11:51Speaker 2: a lot on it. I mean, and we expect that
- 11:53Speaker 2: guys to study, have a really good feel for the
- 11:58Speaker 2: game Flan before practice, you know. So what you don't
- 12:01Speaker 2: see is how prepared that guy was, how quickly he
- 12:05Speaker 2: came in to our office and understood it and maximize
- 12:09Speaker 2: it and became a leader. You know. That's a quick
- 12:13Speaker 2: turnaround to ask the guy to come from another system
- 12:17Speaker 2: to come in kick it all up, and then all
- 12:19Speaker 2: of a sudden he's the leader that's impressionable, and so
- 12:24Speaker 2: what he's going to be able to do is there's
- 12:26Speaker 2: nothing about that playbook, the seattle that's going to throw
- 12:29Speaker 2: him off. He'll be able to pick that up and
- 12:31Speaker 2: then use his speed to the best of his ability.
- 12:34Speaker 2: But that's the biggest thing you deal with with the
- 12:36Speaker 2: guys like this. After you get out of the all
- 12:38Speaker 2: being in the NFL, you have speed, you have ability.
- 12:41Speaker 2: You google long and go out there and make a
- 12:44Speaker 2: flu You'll go and be to play pretty quickly.
- 12:48Speaker 1: Terrence, I wanted to ask you. I've always wondered this
- 12:51Speaker 1: the changing landscape of college football. As a position coach,
- 12:55Speaker 1: how involved do you get in having to re recruit
- 12:58Speaker 1: guys that are already on your team to keep them
- 13:00Speaker 1: from leaving in the portal even during a season. And
- 13:03Speaker 1: then how much do you have a say in whom
- 13:06Speaker 1: you get your program gets in the portal or is
- 13:09Speaker 1: that a head coach decision that maybe you don't have anything,
- 13:13Speaker 1: they just hand you the players that are coming in.
- 13:15Speaker 1: Or how much are you involved in the process of
- 13:17Speaker 1: recruiting transfer portal players into your program.
- 13:21Speaker 2: They have to be one hundred percent into it. I
- 13:23Speaker 2: mean it's a group of effort. Don't get me wrong,
- 13:25Speaker 2: but we're not the NFL model yet we have to
- 13:28Speaker 2: be able to, you know, look at the players that
- 13:32Speaker 2: are in the portal as that have interest and then
- 13:34Speaker 2: see if it shiits. I mean, are they selfish? Are
- 13:38Speaker 2: they willing to come in there and learn? Are they
- 13:40Speaker 2: expected to come in here and start? You know, so
- 13:42Speaker 2: you have all those conversations with these players in the
- 13:45Speaker 2: portal and you try to figure out would they say
- 13:47Speaker 2: in your program, Because if you come in and you're
- 13:50Speaker 2: mouth content and you're wasting time getting better and put
- 13:53Speaker 2: yourself on the field, if you come in like you
- 13:55Speaker 2: Manuel Henderson did, he learned, he understood, he brought into
- 14:00Speaker 2: the culture, and he made the most out of his opportunities.
- 14:03Speaker 2: That's what should be happening in the portal But to
- 14:05Speaker 2: answer your question just more readily, I mean, the biggest
- 14:08Speaker 2: state for us is we need to all be on
- 14:10Speaker 2: the same page with what we see in the portal.
- 14:12Speaker 2: We need to or whatever it may be. We need
- 14:14Speaker 2: to recruit them and we need to you know, show
- 14:16Speaker 2: them that we can develop them and then get them
- 14:19Speaker 2: in the program, get them going. The players that we
- 14:21Speaker 2: have on the team that you're trying to keep. Yes,
- 14:25Speaker 2: it doesn't start right after the seasons over as far
- 14:28Speaker 2: as we recruiting them. You have to identify those players
- 14:31Speaker 2: and know that they can help you lay on or
- 14:32Speaker 2: further on in next year or whatever. You start recruting
- 14:36Speaker 2: those guys the year before you know it. It's your
- 14:40Speaker 2: rhythm and it's your chemistry. It's how you treat the players.
- 14:43Speaker 2: It's you know, how they do they feel like they're
- 14:45Speaker 2: getting better? Do they feel like you care about them?
- 14:48Speaker 2: If they feel like they're getting better and they feel
- 14:50Speaker 2: like you care about them, then they'll stand with you.
- 14:53Speaker 2: It's you know, it's when those guys feel like you know,
- 14:55Speaker 2: you're not standing with them, you're not loving them, or
- 14:57Speaker 2: you're not develop them. Yeah, they want to go to
- 15:00Speaker 2: somewhere the place and they would go try to find
- 15:02Speaker 2: some more money.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Coach, I know you're busy. I really appreciate you joining
- 15:06Speaker 1: us while you're on the road recruiting in Texas. And
- 15:08Speaker 1: it sounds like Emmanuel Henderson, ow's your jersey to frame
- 15:10Speaker 1: in your office there in Lawrence.
- 15:13Speaker 2: The better be coming.
- 15:15Speaker 1: Thank you, sir, be well, all the best to the
- 15:17Speaker 1: Jayhawks there
