- 0:02Speaker 1: Disney gays are different from Disney Channel gaze. We are
- 0:05Speaker 1: not a monolith, clarifying that that's really important. I'm not
- 0:10Speaker 1: out here with Mickey Mouse's ears. No, no, no, I'm
- 0:13Speaker 1: trying to.
- 0:14Speaker 2: You keep them, you keep, but you keep them things
- 0:16Speaker 2: out here. You have a pair you just for ic
- 0:22Speaker 2: She's sheen. I'm me, no me, not my name?
- 0:28Speaker 1: Yo?
- 0:30Speaker 3: What is your childe?
- 0:34Speaker 1: I am a cook.
- 0:37Speaker 3: Your life's going down.
- 0:39Speaker 4: The floor like.
- 0:41Speaker 1: Round.
- 0:51Speaker 2: Welcome to Like a Virgin, the show where we give
- 0:53Speaker 2: yesterday's pop culture today's takes. I'mro's DomU Frand and I
- 0:59Speaker 2: Believe were both still coming down from the incredible high
- 1:04Speaker 2: of the Caroline polchech ethel Caine Show this weekend, also
- 1:09Speaker 2: known as Motherfest.
- 1:11Speaker 3: Okay, wait, can we talk about the fact that it
- 1:15Speaker 3: is annoying that people kept shouting, screaming mother and Caroline Politecks.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Screaming mother, screaming Diva, scream just screaming things. I mean
- 1:26Speaker 2: I did at one point on the scream we Love
- 1:28Speaker 2: you Mima during the Ethyl Cane set, But I, you know,
- 1:32Speaker 2: leashed myself.
- 1:33Speaker 3: Were you sitting by myself or were you with the group?
- 1:36Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 1:36Speaker 2: No, I was sitting by myself because I didn't buy
- 1:39Speaker 2: a ticket until Friday night because we were we were
- 1:42Speaker 2: at a party Friday night, and I had like vaguely
- 1:47Speaker 2: known that Caroline was playing and then, but I didn't
- 1:52Speaker 2: know that Ethel was opening for her. And so as
- 1:55Speaker 2: soon as I heard that, I was like, well, I
- 1:57Speaker 2: can't miss that combo. So I just uber on my
- 2:00Speaker 2: way home. I just bought a ticket and got a
- 2:03Speaker 2: really good seat and it was amazing. Also, you know,
- 2:09Speaker 2: I'm sure you experienced some of this obviously. That show
- 2:13Speaker 2: is very much like our demographic in terms of listeners.
- 2:16Speaker 2: And there were many rosebuds there Hi, which was very
- 2:21Speaker 2: which was really nice.
- 2:22Speaker 3: I definitely talked to a virgin or two. It is
- 2:24Speaker 3: our demographic in fact, Like we can definitely write this
- 2:27Speaker 3: off for work for sure.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Oh good idea. I should have. I should have just
- 2:32Speaker 2: charged it to the business.
- 2:33Speaker 3: Not that not our business card. You can write it
- 2:35Speaker 3: off on your own taxes, sweetie. Unless I got because
- 2:40Speaker 3: I was a plus one to our friend Anya to
- 2:43Speaker 3: this to this concert, and I, much like you, Ethel
- 2:47Speaker 3: was the thing that pushed me over the edge. So
- 2:49Speaker 3: I don't I'm not as much of a Caroline stan
- 2:52Speaker 3: as the the average girl, average girl being you and
- 2:57Speaker 3: our listeners.
- 2:58Speaker 2: Oh I'm the average girl. Yeah, okay, I'll take it. Yeah,
- 3:02Speaker 2: girl next door just kidding, Caroline Politic is not a
- 3:04Speaker 2: girl next door. The girl next door to like a cemetery, ye,
- 3:09Speaker 2: like a whorehouse.
- 3:12Speaker 3: She's a girl next door to like an alien planet.
- 3:15Speaker 2: The girl next door to like like a chemical plant
- 3:18Speaker 2: that exploded and like mutated everyone with radioactive and yeah,
- 3:22Speaker 2: now everything is sunset colored and she and you can
- 3:25Speaker 2: only speak through like improvisational dance moves like and and vocalize. Yeah,
- 3:33Speaker 2: that was amazing, incredible, you know, I like so as
- 3:39Speaker 2: I was saying, like ethel was what tipped you over
- 3:41Speaker 2: the edge wanting to go to the show, and I
- 3:44Speaker 2: her set really was spellbinding and like took us to church,
- 3:48Speaker 2: and I was so into it, and you know Caroline,
- 3:51Speaker 2: I felt like, obviously I love Caroline, I love her music.
- 3:54Speaker 2: I mean, Desire I Want to Turn Into You is
- 3:56Speaker 2: my favorite album of the year so far. But I
- 3:59Speaker 2: went into the show feeling like she was like a
- 4:01Speaker 2: bonus for me. And then as soon as her set started,
- 4:04Speaker 2: I realized how excited I was to see her, and
- 4:08Speaker 2: like the energy was amazing. It was so fun, Like
- 4:12Speaker 2: I was dancing. I didn't realize how much I wanted
- 4:16Speaker 2: to hear those songs live and be in a huge
- 4:19Speaker 2: space where everyone was singing along to them. It was
- 4:23Speaker 2: so fun, one thousand percent same Like I Caroline was
- 4:27Speaker 2: my bonus, and right when she got there, I was like, oh,
- 4:32Speaker 2: like it gave me so much more appreciation for who
- 4:35Speaker 2: she is as an artist, as truly as an artist.
- 4:39Speaker 3: And you know, I don't, I don't. I don't want
- 4:42Speaker 3: to compare Caroline Pelchick because they're extremely different lanes. But
- 4:45Speaker 3: like I did say this on our Patreon with Hunter Harris,
- 4:48Speaker 3: which everybody should listen to this week, But I knew
- 4:51Speaker 3: Ethelkane did not have has like virtually no stage presence.
- 4:55Speaker 3: It's a joke she's made before. She's talked about how
- 4:57Speaker 3: you know she's still like getting her groove on the stage.
- 5:00Speaker 3: She's like still kind of like meek and quiet and
- 5:03Speaker 3: like just kind of like wanders around and whisper and
- 5:06Speaker 3: whispers sometimes. And but she Ethel was vocally perfect. Like
- 5:11Speaker 3: I was really nervous for the vocals because so much
- 5:14Speaker 3: of her song, like her songs really rely on auto tune.
- 5:19Speaker 3: And the autotune quality is part of what I love
- 5:21Speaker 3: about her music. I think the autotune sounds so cool,
- 5:24Speaker 3: so I was like, what is she actually going to
- 5:26Speaker 3: sound like? And she was crystal clear.
- 5:29Speaker 2: When I could hear her.
- 5:29Speaker 3: That is so by the time Caroline came on, it
- 5:33Speaker 3: was such a tonal difference, like like.
- 5:35Speaker 2: The energy shifted immediately running really filled up the room.
- 5:39Speaker 3: Production value, the set was gorge like simple, effective.
- 5:43Speaker 2: Like visuals were amazing. She just had really great command
- 5:49Speaker 2: of the audience. Yes, obviously you know. Ethel's set was
- 5:54Speaker 2: very emotional. I wept during sun Bleached Flies, but then
- 6:00Speaker 2: Airlines was emotional in this different way. It was like
- 6:03Speaker 2: sexy and visceral. And it also like when she dedicated
- 6:09Speaker 2: I Believe to Sophie, like I cried during that song
- 6:12Speaker 2: and it was and Billions when everyone was like swaying
- 6:18Speaker 2: their hands was so great. And her encore when she
- 6:21Speaker 2: closed with door like that was magical. It was just
- 6:27Speaker 2: such a great, great show, like a perfect lineup of artists,
- 6:34Speaker 2: the gayest you know, like non binary Telfour, Baddy crowd,
- 6:40Speaker 2: but like with a slight like country Girls make do Lean.
- 6:46Speaker 2: There was like, yeah, there were we Anya and I
- 6:49Speaker 2: got dinner before like around the corner, and we kept
- 6:52Speaker 2: seeing like you know, girls in like platform docs with
- 6:56Speaker 2: dark roots and like smoky I makeup, and I was like,
- 7:00Speaker 2: I know where they're going.
- 7:01Speaker 3: Okay, don't get it twisted. I definitely had a little
- 7:04Speaker 3: bit of smoke on my eyes as well. Billions was
- 7:08Speaker 3: definitely my favorite part of the show. I did not
- 7:12Speaker 3: like Billions when it was released. I have not revisited.
- 7:14Speaker 2: Really, yes, it's so good.
- 7:16Speaker 3: I was wrong. I was wrong. I don't know why
- 7:18Speaker 3: I was underwhelmed. I didn't under I think I mostly
- 7:20Speaker 3: just didn't understand the song. I didn't get it. And
- 7:23Speaker 3: something that I love about Caroline and why I'm now
- 7:27Speaker 3: like a few cars up on the Caroline train, Like
- 7:30Speaker 3: it's almost as if like because her songs are such
- 7:33Speaker 3: a landscape, they're like such a sonic like tapestry that
- 7:38Speaker 3: is so specific and so like of an artist that
- 7:41Speaker 3: cannot be replicated, Like no one can really do what
- 7:45Speaker 3: Caroline does, and she is so singular save like a
- 7:49Speaker 3: few different comparisons to people like I don't know Kate Bush,
- 7:54Speaker 3: what Joe Well. What I was gonna like, what I
- 7:56Speaker 3: was gonna say is there are some artists who seeing
- 8:00Speaker 3: them live like makes you understand them in a different
- 8:03Speaker 3: way or like activate something about them for you and
- 8:07Speaker 3: for me, the first time I ever saw Florence the
- 8:09Speaker 3: Machine live, that happened, and I think Caroline has a
- 8:13Speaker 3: very similar energy about her where you you listen to
- 8:18Speaker 3: the songs and you love them and you're like, Okay,
- 8:20Speaker 3: well you know, I'm of course I'm enjoying the experience
- 8:24Speaker 3: of this in my headphones, but I doubt it would
- 8:26Speaker 3: be the same live. And I think Caroline did a
- 8:29Speaker 3: really great job of bringing those songs to life in
- 8:31Speaker 3: a way that was as good or somewhat better than
- 8:34Speaker 3: they sound on her records. Yeah, yeah, I one hundred
- 8:38Speaker 3: percent agree, and like sorry, I'm like, this is like,
- 8:43Speaker 3: this is just to make you mad. Florence I have
- 8:46Speaker 3: the notes a lot of the time, I and Caroline can't.
- 8:52Speaker 2: No.
- 8:52Speaker 3: I mean, the thing about Florence is that she is
- 8:54Speaker 3: chronically flat and the flat I mean she has seen
- 8:57Speaker 3: off key on the record, but that is like part
- 9:01Speaker 3: of the a pee. I think that's like part of
- 9:03Speaker 3: the thing that people like about Florence. They like this,
- 9:05Speaker 3: like the I don't know, sometimes she hits the note
- 9:08Speaker 3: flat Caroline as clear as a bell, and and I
- 9:12Speaker 3: and with Billions specifically, that was like one of those
- 9:14Speaker 3: moments where I was like, you are such a talented vocalist, and.
- 9:20Speaker 2: The Ocean of Tears really was that moment for me.
- 9:23Speaker 3: And in the with Billions, I want to I don't
- 9:25Speaker 3: remember what happened during Oceans you should. I want I
- 9:27Speaker 3: want to hear more about that. But I with with Billions,
- 9:30Speaker 3: it was like I was like, it's almost as if
- 9:33Speaker 3: I saw the song like I didn't. I couldn't actually
- 9:36Speaker 3: figure out the song in its audio form, like I
- 9:39Speaker 3: needed to see how Caroline felt the colors she sees
- 9:43Speaker 3: during this song, the end, the when she when she
- 9:46Speaker 3: made everyone raise their hands and waved just as you said,
- 9:48Speaker 3: Like I had never thought about this kind of like
- 9:52Speaker 3: vocal reprise, kind of cult leader thing that happens in
- 9:56Speaker 3: the bridge of that song. The bridge a perfect, perfect
- 9:59Speaker 3: bridge in that song. It is like I needed to
- 10:03Speaker 3: she It's almost as if she was showing us the
- 10:05Speaker 3: language of her music in that performance and in others.
- 10:10Speaker 2: Yeah, she really brought both of her albums to life
- 10:16Speaker 2: in a spectacular way and merged them really perfectly together.
- 10:20Speaker 2: Like I loved in the second verse of fly to
- 10:25Speaker 2: You how because that song has features on it and
- 10:30Speaker 2: obviously like neither Grimes nor Dida were there. Instead of
- 10:33Speaker 2: singing the second verse, she like added in one of
- 10:37Speaker 2: the verses from a song off of Pang. I can't
- 10:39Speaker 2: remember what it was now, but it was a great moment,
- 10:42Speaker 2: and I loved hearing so many of the songs from Pang.
- 10:44Speaker 2: One of my favorite moments of the show is during
- 10:46Speaker 2: Caroline Shut Up, when the audience was like singing, and
- 10:50Speaker 2: I tell myself, ka, ruh line shut up. That was
- 10:54Speaker 2: so great.
- 10:55Speaker 3: I didn't think she was gonna sing that song, and
- 10:57Speaker 3: that's my favorite Caroline song.
- 10:59Speaker 2: I was.
- 11:00Speaker 3: I'm so happy it's It's definitely like my number one.
- 11:02Speaker 3: I will return to that song forever forever.
- 11:06Speaker 2: Also being able to chant to sing back in the city,
- 11:10Speaker 2: I'm just another girl in a sweater with everyone is
- 11:14Speaker 2: so great.
- 11:15Speaker 3: What else were you up to this weekend?
- 11:17Speaker 4: Rose?
- 11:17Speaker 3: I know you and I saw each other at Laurel's
- 11:20Speaker 3: Goodbye BBQ Laurel Charleston, who will be in an upcoming
- 11:23Speaker 3: episode not to spoil.
- 11:25Speaker 2: Yes, very exciting. Other than that, I kept it pretty
- 11:29Speaker 2: chill over the weekend. I mean you know, it was
- 11:31Speaker 2: raining all day Friday. I started reading a new book.
- 11:34Speaker 2: I'm reading it the Stephen King novel Now, which is
- 11:38Speaker 2: incredibly long. I felt like I read so much on Sunday,
- 11:42Speaker 2: but got through basically just the prologue. And watched Succession
- 11:49Speaker 2: last night obviously at Virgins. As Frand mentioned before, we
- 11:53Speaker 2: did a Succession episode with Hunter Harris on our patren
- 12:00Speaker 2: So go to patreon dot com slash like a Virgin
- 12:02Speaker 2: so you can listen to that. It was very good.
- 12:05Speaker 2: But yeah, I started. I started it because I finally
- 12:08Speaker 2: finished Fingersmith this week, which I mentioned for The Virgins
- 12:13Speaker 2: a couple of months ago that that was going to
- 12:14Speaker 2: be the next book in Rose's Book Corner and then
- 12:18Speaker 2: Ros's Book Club, and then it just sort of it
- 12:21Speaker 2: took me a really long time to read it, but
- 12:23Speaker 2: once I finally got going, I powered through it so
- 12:27Speaker 2: quickly last week and it was incredible. It is like
- 12:32Speaker 2: has edged its way into maybe like my top ten
- 12:35Speaker 2: books of all time. Oh so goodh And then the
- 12:41Speaker 2: night that I finished the day the day that I
- 12:43Speaker 2: finished it, I watched The Handmaiden, which is a film
- 12:47Speaker 2: that is based on Fingersmith.
- 12:50Speaker 3: One of my favorite queer films of all time.
- 12:52Speaker 2: And I also started watching the BBC mini series adaptation
- 12:57Speaker 2: of Fingersmith. So in an upcoming episode of the Patreon
- 13:01Speaker 2: we will do Rose's book Corner. We will talk about
- 13:04Speaker 2: I will talk about Fingersmith and Fran You will watch
- 13:08Speaker 2: The Handmaiden so that you can be part of the
- 13:10Speaker 2: conversation and I can give you some some tea on
- 13:13Speaker 2: the differences in the adaptation. I've watched The Handmaiden so
- 13:17Speaker 2: many times I'm wondering, Oh really, yes, I'm wondering.
- 13:19Speaker 3: I've rewatched and rewatched that movie. I adore it. I
- 13:25Speaker 3: might actually start the BBC series because I've never watched that,
- 13:28Speaker 3: and maybe that'll give me a little color.
- 13:30Speaker 2: It's good. It's it's i think only watchable on YouTube.
- 13:33Speaker 2: It's not amazing quality, but it's great. Sally Hawkins is
- 13:39Speaker 2: in it, Emelda Staunton is in it. Charles Dance from
- 13:46Speaker 2: Game of Thrones is in it. I want to keep
- 13:49Speaker 2: watching it. It seems to be very faithful to the book,
- 13:52Speaker 2: whereas The Handmaiden is not. But yes, if you want
- 13:56Speaker 2: a better understanding of the story of the novel than
- 14:00Speaker 2: totally watch it. It's a three part mini series. I
- 14:02Speaker 2: think each of the parts is.
- 14:04Speaker 3: Like an hour and a half, okay, and maybe I'll
- 14:06Speaker 3: watch part one. Okay. So for the virgins who are
- 14:09Speaker 3: maybe a little more averse to picking up a lengthy
- 14:13Speaker 3: historical piece of fiction, what are some things to inspire
- 14:19Speaker 3: the virgins to really get through this book?
- 14:22Speaker 2: Is there a turning point? Is there something that you
- 14:24Speaker 2: hold out for? So about midway through the novel, there
- 14:27Speaker 2: is an insane twist which you will kind of know
- 14:31Speaker 2: from watching the movie, but it's much more shocking in
- 14:35Speaker 2: the book. So that really did it for me. And
- 14:38Speaker 2: then also the relationship between the two main characters. And
- 14:43Speaker 2: I will say, you know, one of the things I
- 14:45Speaker 2: really like about it is Sarah Waters writes a lot
- 14:48Speaker 2: about identity. My favorite book, Tipping the Velvet, which is
- 14:51Speaker 2: her first novel, is very much about identity, but it's
- 14:55Speaker 2: much more about gender because it's the novel is about
- 14:59Speaker 2: cross dressing, and this one, the identity is much more
- 15:02Speaker 2: about like doppelgangers, which are I think such an interesting
- 15:06Speaker 2: thing to play with in queer fiction because like so
- 15:09Speaker 2: many queer people have experienced, like fucking someone who looks
- 15:12Speaker 2: like them. It's like when you're attracted to people with
- 15:14Speaker 2: the same gender, like that's something that you're going to
- 15:16Speaker 2: come into contact with a lot. And also it's very
- 15:20Speaker 2: the novel's very Dickensian. It's like I said this on
- 15:24Speaker 2: my Instagram, It's like if Charles Dickens a pussy, like
- 15:27Speaker 2: that's what Fingersmith would be. So you know it is.
- 15:33Speaker 2: It is slow at the start, but it really revs
- 15:36Speaker 2: up and it's incredibly twisted and sexy and perverted and sad,
- 15:43Speaker 2: and the end is like it was just like a
- 15:47Speaker 2: race to the ending for me. But I also never
- 15:50Speaker 2: wanted it to end. So I really highly recommend it Diarne.
- 15:56Speaker 3: I probably won't be reading it, but I will be
- 15:59Speaker 3: helping you on the Patreon. So virgins get into Rose's
- 16:02Speaker 3: book corner. Let's make this happen.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Yes. Another recommendation I have that I know virgins would
- 16:08Speaker 2: enjoy and is very in line with the things we've
- 16:11Speaker 2: been talking about this episode, specifically, ethel Caine is I
- 16:14Speaker 2: saw this film last week, The Starling Girl, which I
- 16:20Speaker 2: think you would enjoy, Fran, even though it is like
- 16:24Speaker 2: a small and kind of quiet film. It's with Eliza Scolin,
- 16:28Speaker 2: who was Did you watch Sharp Objects?
- 16:32Speaker 4: Uh? No?
- 16:32Speaker 2: I didn't.
- 16:33Speaker 3: It was it was too much Amy Adams, like thinking
- 16:37Speaker 3: and smoking inside a car.
- 16:39Speaker 2: But that's one of the most amazing things about it.
- 16:42Speaker 2: So Eliza Scollin plays Amy Adams's sister in Sharp Objects
- 16:47Speaker 2: and she also was Beth in the in Greta Growig's
- 16:51Speaker 2: Little Women. And this movie is about this girl who
- 16:57Speaker 2: is part of a you know, like small fundamentalist Christian
- 17:00Speaker 2: community in I want to say, like Mississippi or something,
- 17:05Speaker 2: and she's there is a youth pastor who is young
- 17:11Speaker 2: and extremely hot, and they begin a relationship. He's married,
- 17:16Speaker 2: she's a teenager, and it's about her, you know, like
- 17:21Speaker 2: like her sexual awakening. And it's very Ethel Kane core,
- 17:28Speaker 2: Like I literally was expecting a thoroughfare needle drop at
- 17:31Speaker 2: the end. And I think Ethel even posted the trailer
- 17:34Speaker 2: and was like, this movie was specifically made for me. Okay,
- 17:39Speaker 2: it's really lovely. The performances are amazing, really great tension,
- 17:46Speaker 2: just like a wonderfully made, sad, startling film that doesn't
- 17:57Speaker 2: like try too hard to go look how bad religion
- 18:02Speaker 2: is it just like very and I'm sure this is
- 18:05Speaker 2: something that I mean might be triggering for you as
- 18:08Speaker 2: someone who you know, like grew up with a religious family,
- 18:10Speaker 2: but like also might be interesting because of that. It
- 18:13Speaker 2: like it doesn't I don't think it tries to like
- 18:16Speaker 2: pass judgment on that community. It just tries to like
- 18:20Speaker 2: really to paint a very like realistic portrait of what
- 18:26Speaker 2: that life is like.
- 18:27Speaker 3: I mean, yeah, I one thing I'm I'm gonna do
- 18:31Speaker 3: is relive my trauma voluntarily, So I will do it
- 18:35Speaker 3: every time. Unlike a lot of queeries, I'm just like
- 18:37Speaker 3: yesarss oh give it to me. Yeah, so I will
- 18:41Speaker 3: one hundred percent watch it. I did a little Google
- 18:43Speaker 3: and it said things people also searched were virgin suicides
- 18:49Speaker 3: and American beauty.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Would you agree, yes, yes, those are definitely comps.
- 18:55Speaker 4: You know.
- 18:55Speaker 2: It's like a coming of age story and like very
- 19:03Speaker 2: pretty cinematography, good music, just like a really great film experience.
- 19:10Speaker 2: I really enjoyed.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Okay, can't wait for a little recap starling girls girling.
- 19:15Speaker 2: Also, you just listened to Kylie Minogue's new song on
- 19:20Speaker 2: my first thoughts.
- 19:23Speaker 3: I didn't know that there was a song attached to
- 19:25Speaker 3: the meme. It's like, actually, kind.
- 19:27Speaker 2: Of you thought people were just saying for no reason.
- 19:30Speaker 3: Yes, I also thought I thought it was a reference
- 19:32Speaker 3: to something old. I thought I had heard it before.
- 19:34Speaker 3: I also, unfortunately sorry, thought of Netflix because of put
- 19:40Speaker 3: like that.
- 19:41Speaker 2: But that's that's to doom, to.
- 19:43Speaker 3: Doom, right to doom. Anyways, I I thought it was
- 19:48Speaker 3: Actually it kind of slaps. I mean it's I love
- 19:51Speaker 3: summer bops that are like kind of anti intellectual, like
- 19:56Speaker 3: like oh absolutely yeah, Like I love a chorus that
- 20:00Speaker 3: just is a little earworm that means nothing like I
- 20:03Speaker 3: think that's yes pop music at its finest, And so
- 20:08Speaker 3: I did. I only I only listened to it literally
- 20:11Speaker 3: seconds before we hit record, so I haven't been able
- 20:14Speaker 3: to digest. But I mean, what do you do you have?
- 20:16Speaker 3: Like you also do you agree?
- 20:18Speaker 2: Yeah? I think it's super sexy and fun, something for
- 20:22Speaker 2: the something for the summertime, for the girls. You know,
- 20:26Speaker 2: it's like gay, it's gay, cat nip, it's you know,
- 20:29Speaker 2: I'm not a huge Kylie girly, Like I know the
- 20:34Speaker 2: hits and I like her and that, like I don't know,
- 20:39Speaker 2: maybe it was like the brit Awards performance where she
- 20:41Speaker 2: like comes out of the CD player as iconic, but
- 20:44Speaker 2: I'm not super literate on her discography and I actually
- 20:47Speaker 2: think a Kylie Minogue episode would be amazing to have
- 20:51Speaker 2: someone who's really knowledgeable come in and like teach us
- 20:54Speaker 2: a little bit about her. I wasn't super tuned into
- 20:58Speaker 2: her last album Disco, which it wasn't it, And like,
- 21:02Speaker 2: it's so unfortunate that, like for a pop star who
- 21:07Speaker 2: should have been like at the who should have been
- 21:09Speaker 2: like the figurehead of that disco moment in pop music,
- 21:12Speaker 2: she actually felt very like behind the trend. And so
- 21:16Speaker 2: I'm happy that she came back with this sort of
- 21:19Speaker 2: like sexy like pop electroclash, like sort of like gold frappy,
- 21:25Speaker 2: stupid summertime pop song. I think it's fab I like
- 21:29Speaker 2: that she it's this song feels like it's not trying
- 21:33Speaker 2: as hard, Like it makes more sense. I think when
- 21:37Speaker 2: she released her last album, it had come like so
- 21:41Speaker 2: far after the like kind of disco zance that the
- 21:45Speaker 2: pop girlies were doing, and Kylie's doing something that is
- 21:48Speaker 2: like it's not like disco inspired, it's not disco referential.
- 21:52Speaker 2: It's like tried and true disco, but in that like
- 21:56Speaker 2: sometimes it sounds a little generic, which is kind of
- 22:00Speaker 2: how I was feeling about the new Jesse Ware album
- 22:02Speaker 2: as well.
- 22:03Speaker 3: That we discussed it's like it's air Oh my god. Wait,
- 22:07Speaker 3: remember how last week I said that jesse Ware, the
- 22:10Speaker 3: New jesse Ware album was like giving Lizzo a little bit.
- 22:13Speaker 3: I do you remember, You're so mad?
- 22:16Speaker 2: I don't remember, like out, Yeah, I think I ejected
- 22:20Speaker 2: it from my brain because I hated you for it.
- 22:22Speaker 3: Yeah, I maybe because I listened to the New jesse
- 22:25Speaker 3: Ware and I was like, there's something about it that's
- 22:27Speaker 3: giving this like kind of Lizzo rob It's airing on
- 22:30Speaker 3: Lizzo Robin Thick territory. And I feel so validated because
- 22:34Speaker 3: I was listening to the New York Times podcast that
- 22:37Speaker 3: earlier this week, and the guy I can't remember his name,
- 22:40Speaker 3: he's like really really smart but also deeply polarizing. He
- 22:43Speaker 3: also said it was giving Lizzo and I was like, damn, I'm.
- 22:47Speaker 2: Smart, interesting, I'm so someone. I saw on Twitter yesterday
- 22:51Speaker 2: that Katie Perry said that she wants Lizzo to join
- 22:54Speaker 2: the American Idol Judges, and like, can they get someone
- 22:58Speaker 2: who can sing?
- 23:02Speaker 3: Lizo can sing, She's just can't sing live. Lizzo can sing.
- 23:08Speaker 3: Lizzo is an amazing, amazing artist. She just really joy
- 23:13Speaker 3: based and can't hit the notes a lot of the
- 23:15Speaker 3: time during the contract, so she's a bad artist. Okay, Well,
- 23:18Speaker 3: Katy Perry can't really hit the notes either.
- 23:20Speaker 2: So Katy Perry is an incredible entertainer and literally slayed
- 23:25Speaker 2: Firework at the King's Coronation singing your song that is
- 23:30Speaker 2: about the fourth of July, which is fire Psycha.
- 23:33Speaker 3: Her inaugural, her inaugural and when I say inaugural, I
- 23:36Speaker 3: mean like presidential inaugural, not not inaugural. Inaugural performance of
- 23:41Speaker 3: Firework was probably the best live performance she's ever given
- 23:45Speaker 3: in her life. So that I can I can admit,
- 23:49Speaker 3: and I also can admit that Katy Perry is an
- 23:51Speaker 3: amazing entertainer. But so is Lisso. Like like, Lisso is
- 23:55Speaker 3: not even close to the level of iconography that like
- 23:58Speaker 3: Katie is at. I totally agree. But since we've pit
- 24:02Speaker 3: them to get against each other, which we have, I
- 24:05Speaker 3: have to say I think Lizzo is more virtuosic, memorable.
- 24:10Speaker 3: I would rather go to a Liso show. Well, I
- 24:13Speaker 3: don't know if that's true.
- 24:14Speaker 2: Actually, there is not one single there's not one single
- 24:18Speaker 2: Lizzo song that Katie Perry could not like out out
- 24:24Speaker 2: sell well that's because Katie is really good at selling anything,
- 24:28Speaker 2: literally anything. She can sell the Sims, she can sell pop,
- 24:31Speaker 2: purposeful pop, she can sell. God, we were talking about
- 24:35Speaker 2: Katie's SIMS covers on Friday Night Lizzo. I will say,
- 24:40Speaker 2: I like her tiktoks where she eats vegan food.
- 24:43Speaker 3: That's I hate that tiktoks where she eats vegan food.
- 24:46Speaker 2: Hey, that's literally her only creative output that I actually,
- 24:50Speaker 2: Oh God, I just I'm so disappointed with how Lisso
- 24:54Speaker 2: has ended up.
- 24:54Speaker 3: I don't think that she's making good music. I think
- 24:57Speaker 3: she's just chasing pops. And there's nothing wrong with pop
- 25:02Speaker 3: stardom or chasing pop stardom. You just can't empty. Yeah,
- 25:05Speaker 3: you can't forget about the arrt. It feels ten twenty
- 25:08Speaker 3: thousand percent empty, where someone like Katie is actually doing
- 25:12Speaker 3: something that's maybe a little more ownable. Like she she's
- 25:16Speaker 3: a little less. She obviously needs to be successful. She's
- 25:19Speaker 3: always going to chase chase money and chase pop stardom.
- 25:22Speaker 3: But she's giving us like, you know, poop, like the
- 25:24Speaker 3: little poop in the toilet on stage dancing or whatever
- 25:27Speaker 3: like that is undeniably singular and I miss when Lizo
- 25:32Speaker 3: used to be like that, because she did used to
- 25:34Speaker 3: be that girl like Lizzo has always been someone who
- 25:37Speaker 3: is weird, different, not doing it like the other girls
- 25:40Speaker 3: are doing it, And now she is doing it like
- 25:42Speaker 3: the other girls are doing it, and I think that's boring.
- 25:45Speaker 2: I think all her music is dog shit, except for
- 25:47Speaker 2: that one song that she made with Missy Elliott. Yeah wait, okay.
- 25:50Speaker 2: Something that I almost did this weekend that I actually
- 25:53Speaker 2: think we were talking about on Friday night with Peyton
- 25:55Speaker 2: and Hilton is that I kind of want to get
- 25:59Speaker 2: into play Zelda because everyone's talking about it, and I
- 26:04Speaker 2: almost bought a Nintendo Switch and Zelda this weekend.
- 26:07Speaker 3: My grandma sent me a two hundred and fifty dollars check.
- 26:12Speaker 3: I don't know the last time that my grandmother mailed
- 26:16Speaker 3: me a track. It has been a while since we spoke.
- 26:18Speaker 3: I don't know if she heard that I was having
- 26:19Speaker 3: money issue, but I the way, I immediately thought about
- 26:26Speaker 3: using that to buy a Nintendo Switch so that I
- 26:28Speaker 3: could play well because.
- 26:29Speaker 2: That's the exact price of a Nintendo Switch light and
- 26:32Speaker 2: a Zelda game.
- 26:32Speaker 3: Yes, oh no, I mean, oh yeah. Switch light is
- 26:36Speaker 3: when I need to change your books. That's crazy.
- 26:38Speaker 4: So the thing?
- 26:39Speaker 3: Can you plug a switch light into your TV?
- 26:41Speaker 2: No?
- 26:42Speaker 3: Okay, so I need that. So I would have to
- 26:44Speaker 3: get the actual switch which is.
- 26:47Speaker 2: Just which is like one hundred and fifty dollars.
- 26:49Speaker 3: For back when I had Netflix money, Like girl, that
- 26:52Speaker 3: that that that video game, it would have been. It
- 26:54Speaker 3: would have been my house already, babe. But like I'm
- 26:58Speaker 3: I I honestly, the money is the core issue for me.
- 27:04Speaker 3: But I do feel like I still really want to
- 27:06Speaker 3: buy it, and I also really want to buy the prequel,
- 27:09Speaker 3: The Wind of the Willow and The Sounds of the
- 27:12Speaker 3: Pussy or whatever the yeah, the.
- 27:18Speaker 4: Wind of the Yeah.
- 27:20Speaker 2: Anyways, So so I like, I don't know why I
- 27:23Speaker 2: decided that I wanted to play it, But you're not
- 27:26Speaker 2: neither of not a game person. I really am not one. No,
- 27:33Speaker 2: I have to I have to have my own I'm
- 27:35Speaker 2: not a game person, And I tried. I went on
- 27:42Speaker 2: TikTok and was looking up videos of gameplay to see
- 27:46Speaker 2: if it was something I was interested in, and I
- 27:48Speaker 2: was really convinced I was. And then I was watching
- 27:51Speaker 2: these videos, I was like, this looks so fucking boring.
- 27:54Speaker 3: So I will say from what I know about you,
- 27:57Speaker 3: rose you if you do not must through what is
- 28:01Speaker 3: an extremely And this is just what gamers have told me,
- 28:04Speaker 3: because I've been asking a lot of people about the game,
- 28:06Speaker 3: about whether I should buy, about what I should buy first,
- 28:08Speaker 3: et cetera. If it's hard to learn from what I
- 28:11Speaker 3: understand and from what I know about you, you would
- 28:14Speaker 3: have a very difficult time muscling through like the kind
- 28:17Speaker 3: of first like five to fifteen hours of gameplay, because
- 28:20Speaker 3: five to fifteen, yes, because the first the first well,
- 28:24Speaker 3: the first three hours are something of a tutorial, I believe,
- 28:28Speaker 3: where you're understanding how all of like kind of I
- 28:31Speaker 3: was about to say, luke links, links, like like abilities,
- 28:36Speaker 3: like all the different like you know, tricks and stuff
- 28:38Speaker 3: like that. This is me trying to do gamers speak,
- 28:42Speaker 3: you know, all the little tricks and stuff. But yeah, no,
- 28:46Speaker 3: I honestly don't think I think you'll have a hard
- 28:49Speaker 3: time unless you get to the point where you're like, oh,
- 28:52Speaker 3: now I understand the game, because it is a game
- 28:55Speaker 3: that you kind of you have a bit of an
- 28:57Speaker 3: aha moment you're like, oh now I understand how this works.
- 29:01Speaker 3: But it's pretty difficult to master what it is to
- 29:06Speaker 3: get link going so take that into consideration. Yeah, I
- 29:11Speaker 3: think I think I think it's going to be it's
- 29:15Speaker 3: a no from I think it's a no for me. Dog,
- 29:17Speaker 3: I think that time would be better suited to me
- 29:21Speaker 3: reading books and.
- 29:22Speaker 2: Working on my novel.
- 29:24Speaker 4: Yeah. Not.
- 29:26Speaker 2: And I don't need to like spend three hundred bucks
- 29:31Speaker 2: to realize that I'm not a game person.
- 29:34Speaker 4: Virgins.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Not to spoil anything for you, but it is a
- 29:38Speaker 3: really good time to be subscribed to the Patreon right now.
- 29:42Speaker 3: Like if you were to just subscribe for the summer,
- 29:45Speaker 3: if you were too well, we don't recommend that you
- 29:46Speaker 3: should be subscribing one hundred percent all the time, but
- 29:49Speaker 3: if you were to hop in now, it's not too late.
- 29:51Speaker 3: If you were to follow us at like a virgin
- 29:53Speaker 3: for twenty sixty nine right now, you may be privy
- 29:57Speaker 3: to some extra special news and some things coming up.
- 30:01Speaker 3: Please please please engage with us, because look, I.
- 30:05Speaker 2: Hate to say it, Pride is around the corner, not
- 30:07Speaker 2: that any of us is, like, you know, booking Pride.
- 30:09Speaker 2: I mean I booked one Pride gig, but like the
- 30:11Speaker 2: Pride gigs are not coming through this year because you know,
- 30:13Speaker 2: every company is like homophobic. Now, love that for them.
- 30:16Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 30:18Speaker 2: You know who's not homophobic is our guest today. That's
- 30:22Speaker 2: probably because he's gay. Don't need to clock his teeth.
- 30:25Speaker 2: But we have Gay Brigado on the podcast today. He
- 30:30Speaker 2: is a writer, former co worker of mine, one of
- 30:35Speaker 2: the girls, and he is here to talk all about
- 30:38Speaker 2: Disney Channel d COM's Disney Channel Original movies. For those
- 30:42Speaker 2: who aren't up to date on the lingo, so you know,
- 30:46Speaker 2: grab your wand make those little like mouse ears zidas lapita.
- 30:54Speaker 1: Think.
- 31:18Speaker 3: I had a list of DCOM summarized to me by
- 31:21Speaker 3: our dear friend Ashley Lukachevsky. And let me tell you,
- 31:24Speaker 3: the log lines for some of these are crazy. I
- 31:29Speaker 3: literally don't know how they exist as like fully realized movies.
- 31:32Speaker 2: Can you break down for us what the acronym d
- 31:35Speaker 2: COM stands.
- 31:36Speaker 1: For Disney Channel Original Movie? For those that are uninformed,
- 31:40Speaker 1: that would be me.
- 31:41Speaker 4: I'm the uninformed one. Guilty Istar.
- 31:43Speaker 1: Did you not have Halo growing up? No, which I understand.
- 31:46Speaker 1: You know, I think there was a class access issue
- 31:48Speaker 1: with Disney Channel growing up.
- 31:50Speaker 3: Oh yeah, and you would think I would, because you know,
- 31:53Speaker 3: Disney has Latinas in their pocket.
- 31:56Speaker 4: Like if there's one thing that a Latin family is.
- 31:59Speaker 3: Gonna do it's watch dcons, but we were not a
- 32:02Speaker 3: cable household.
- 32:04Speaker 2: I want to share my first the first memory I
- 32:10Speaker 2: have of watching Disney Channel. So there was one year,
- 32:14Speaker 2: the year that That's So Raven premiered. They premiered it
- 32:18Speaker 2: at midnight on New Year's Day, and there was like
- 32:20Speaker 2: a whole lead up to it, and I watched Disney
- 32:24Speaker 2: Channel all that night waiting for That's So Raven and
- 32:28Speaker 2: then the world changed forever.
- 32:30Speaker 1: And then they dropped four episodes at night.
- 32:32Speaker 2: I don't know about that, but it's possible.
- 32:35Speaker 1: I feel like I feel like one of the episodes
- 32:37Speaker 1: was the party, the birthday party with the snake or
- 32:39Speaker 1: something like that.
- 32:43Speaker 2: Sure, there was always like that. Any Disney Channel sitcom episode,
- 32:48Speaker 2: it's like, okay, name like a place or an event,
- 32:51Speaker 2: a weird animal, something traumatic that could happen to a teenager.
- 32:56Speaker 2: And then maybe what's the fourth thing?
- 33:00Speaker 3: Gender swap, some sort of gender swaps, Yeah, sort of like.
- 33:04Speaker 2: A weird saying like jinkies or.
- 33:06Speaker 3: Yeah, a technology kind of based like snapho. I mean, yeah,
- 33:12Speaker 3: this I as someone who like grew as as y'all,
- 33:16Speaker 3: y'all grew up with d cooms, Right was the I
- 33:19Speaker 3: like just want to know when you're experiencing them in
- 33:21Speaker 3: real time? Were these like like eventized? What were like
- 33:26Speaker 3: Disney Channel original movies, Like were they gaggy? Like did
- 33:30Speaker 3: they drop? And everyone was like, oh my fucking ud,
- 33:32Speaker 3: Like yeah, what was it? What was the experience of that?
- 33:34Speaker 1: It was like bigger than like a supreme drop, honestly,
- 33:37Speaker 1: because it was like they would lead up being like
- 33:40Speaker 1: the Ultimate Christmas Gift dropping on December twelfth or whatever,
- 33:43Speaker 1: and you would wait like weeks for it to fally
- 33:45Speaker 1: come out on that f Friday and it would play
- 33:46Speaker 1: it all weekend and then so yeah, it was definitely
- 33:50Speaker 1: I feel like bring back linear, you know. I like
- 33:53Speaker 1: loved like the anticipation for a movie to come out.
- 33:56Speaker 1: I remember I think the Thirteenth Year was coming out,
- 34:00Speaker 1: which is many gay boys young gay awakening because it's
- 34:04Speaker 1: the the Mermaid movie.
- 34:07Speaker 2: Oh with the Merman, Yeah, exactly.
- 34:09Speaker 1: Murman representation.
- 34:10Speaker 4: What is it called again?
- 34:11Speaker 1: I heard about this the thirteenth Year.
- 34:13Speaker 2: The thirteenth Year.
- 34:14Speaker 1: Yeah, So the concept is that there's this boy, he's
- 34:17Speaker 1: a really good swimmer. Then it turns out it's revealed
- 34:21Speaker 1: to them that his mom is actually a mermaid and
- 34:24Speaker 1: he was like like given to this adopted family, and
- 34:27Speaker 1: in his thirteenth year he starts getting all these mermaid qualities,
- 34:31Speaker 1: like whenever suches water, like he's like his scales come
- 34:33Speaker 1: out and stuff. Oh no that yeah, it's like it's
- 34:37Speaker 1: like the Splash reboot starring Channing Tatum that's allegedly happening.
- 34:41Speaker 4: It's it's more like that.
- 34:42Speaker 3: What was the the like fish Call Me by Your Name.
- 34:46Speaker 2: Luca Luca, which I never watched all the way through.
- 34:49Speaker 1: I was thinking of HTWOL the Australian series.
- 34:52Speaker 2: I never watched that.
- 34:54Speaker 1: Well, I think that's where like the TikTok audio. Oh no, Clay,
- 34:57Speaker 1: yeah it is. No, you're your history, your now, your now,
- 35:01Speaker 1: your mermaid history.
- 35:02Speaker 2: Okay.
- 35:02Speaker 1: So the the the dcom boy that I had a
- 35:05Speaker 1: crush on was the boy in Luck of the Irish Oh,
- 35:08Speaker 1: Ryan Merriman, who turned into a Leprica.
- 35:11Speaker 3: Yeah, what's little I remember hearing about this. He's very
- 35:14Speaker 3: small on the cover of the movie.
- 35:17Speaker 1: Well also he's small and he's a basketball player.
- 35:20Speaker 3: That is the one thing that I appreciate about these
- 35:24Speaker 3: these movies and D comms is that like I you
- 35:28Speaker 3: you understand the movie immediately when you look at the
- 35:30Speaker 3: at the picture with the okay, so with the Thirteenth Year,
- 35:34Speaker 3: does he so does he eventually grow a mermaid tale.
- 35:36Speaker 1: Or No, I don't think he does, cause he's only
- 35:39Speaker 1: half mermaid, okays something like that.
- 35:41Speaker 3: Something that I loved about the cover of the Thirteenth
- 35:44Speaker 3: Year was that he didn't have one mermaid tale. He
- 35:47Speaker 3: had two fish mermaid legs because he's a man murmaid.
- 35:51Speaker 2: Oh so he can't have a tail, yeah.
- 35:53Speaker 3: A tale because that would be too much, but like
- 35:55Speaker 3: the two fish legs look worse. I was like, this
- 35:59Speaker 3: is and also like on the swimming level, like I
- 36:01Speaker 3: don't know how you're gonna get what you need to
- 36:02Speaker 3: get done. But okayluck of the Irish Crush leverricn Man.
- 36:07Speaker 1: Yeah, well okay back to the question. But the drop.
- 36:10Speaker 1: I remember the Thirteenthyear was coming out and I was like, oh,
- 36:13Speaker 1: like from all the commercials, he's so cute blah blah blah,
- 36:15Speaker 1: like in my closet itself. And we were at my
- 36:19Speaker 1: mom's friend's house on like a Friday, and I told her,
- 36:23Speaker 1: I was like, we have to be home by this movie.
- 36:24Speaker 1: We have we just like we can't miss it, and
- 36:27Speaker 1: of course like we like are there too late? And
- 36:29Speaker 1: then I like I have to just like watch it
- 36:31Speaker 1: here then Mom, so it's like we have to like
- 36:33Speaker 1: now wait another hour and a half for me to
- 36:34Speaker 1: finish this movie here, which I think my mom was
- 36:36Speaker 1: finally because she was still hanging out with her friend,
- 36:38Speaker 1: but like I was in the living room being like
- 36:40Speaker 1: pregay watching this Mermaid Boy swim an experience.
- 36:44Speaker 2: I think all of us can relate to. Those d
- 36:47Speaker 2: coms had some incredible star power. I think Lindsay Lohan
- 36:51Speaker 2: was in one.
- 36:51Speaker 1: Get a Clue, Get a Clue, The Spy One Yeah,
- 36:54Speaker 1: with Brenda Song, Branda Song, and Bug Hall who played
- 36:58Speaker 1: Alfalfa in the litchool movie.
- 37:01Speaker 2: I don't remember him.
- 37:04Speaker 4: Get a Clue.
- 37:05Speaker 3: She was just like getting clues right, she was solving mystery.
- 37:08Speaker 2: It was sort of like the smart kind of well.
- 37:11Speaker 1: I think her like one of her teachers went missing
- 37:14Speaker 1: and they were like, what happened to her? And I
- 37:16Speaker 1: think they got it. They got a bunch of clues
- 37:19Speaker 1: to figure out.
- 37:21Speaker 2: So the title really is incredibly descriptive. There was also
- 37:26Speaker 2: Cadet Kelly, The Lesbian Awakening for many.
- 37:30Speaker 3: Well, a lesbian, you know, military industrial a pro military
- 37:35Speaker 3: propaganda lesbian.
- 37:38Speaker 4: Cipher.
- 37:38Speaker 1: Yeah, I do you know that the queer girl. The
- 37:41Speaker 1: sapphics do love the tension between Hillary Duff and content
- 37:44Speaker 1: creator Christy.
- 37:45Speaker 2: Carl Christi Krals and Ramana. Okay, so she had so
- 37:49Speaker 2: for virgins who don't know Christy Carlson. Romana had a
- 37:52Speaker 2: bit of a revival during the pandemic when she started
- 37:56Speaker 2: uploading these really insane YouTube videos where she was just
- 37:59Speaker 2: like walking in a forest somewhere talking to someone who
- 38:03Speaker 2: is probably like walking backwards holding a camera.
- 38:06Speaker 3: I have no idea who business.
- 38:08Speaker 1: She was on ran from even Stevens.
- 38:11Speaker 2: Yeah, she was the older sister Stevens. She was also
- 38:14Speaker 2: the voice of Kim Possible. And her videos have titles
- 38:17Speaker 2: like I Survived nine to eleven and then like or
- 38:21Speaker 2: like my nine to eleven story.
- 38:23Speaker 4: Oh but did she survive?
- 38:26Speaker 2: She was, I believe in New York City on nine
- 38:29Speaker 2: to eleven. But she was, but she wasn't in the tower.
- 38:31Speaker 4: Yes.
- 38:32Speaker 1: Well, and then when I was at teen Vogue, I
- 38:35Speaker 1: published an essay from her talking about like why she
- 38:38Speaker 1: like kind of like left Disney Channel and like all
- 38:39Speaker 1: her like struggles and I remember like the intro was
- 38:42Speaker 1: that she had gotten like scammed like thousands of dollars
- 38:46Speaker 1: by like someone who does like crystal work or something,
- 38:49Speaker 1: which I'm like, if you're looking for answers, I guess
- 38:51Speaker 1: like you know you are a mark. But I am
- 38:53Speaker 1: glad that she's now monetizing her YouTube.
- 38:55Speaker 2: Yeah, she did tell a story about that on on
- 38:58Speaker 2: on her YouTube channel about how she lost all her
- 39:01Speaker 2: Disney Channel money and she was kind of the I
- 39:04Speaker 2: would say that she, Raven and Hillary Duff were the
- 39:08Speaker 2: queens of Disney Channel at that time.
- 39:12Speaker 1: For that era.
- 39:12Speaker 3: Definitely, do we think that like she uh has graduated
- 39:18Speaker 3: with the same success as a Hillary Duff or a Raven?
- 39:21Speaker 3: So is she like so is that just like always
- 39:24Speaker 3: like a like assault and like a salty taste in
- 39:27Speaker 3: her mouth or something like? Is that or do you
- 39:29Speaker 3: think that she doesn't care?
- 39:31Speaker 2: I'm sure she cares.
- 39:32Speaker 3: Did So what's the plot of Kelly. I've literally heard
- 39:36Speaker 3: this movie talked about so much and I actually don't know.
- 39:38Speaker 1: So Hillary Duff is like a little like she is
- 39:40Speaker 1: in trouble, right, So.
- 39:43Speaker 4: The thing is that she's in trouble.
- 39:45Speaker 2: She's very I mean, she's maybe like super materialistic. She
- 39:48Speaker 2: like gets bad grades.
- 39:49Speaker 1: I don't know, Yeah, because there's that that video of
- 39:51Speaker 1: heard about her friend. You know what I'm talking about. No,
- 40:00Speaker 1: I'm shet. Yeah, she's like a military materialistics so her
- 40:03Speaker 1: parents send her to like military school where Ren Stevens
- 40:08Speaker 1: whips her into shape.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Yeah, and a bunch of millennial lesbians were born.
- 40:15Speaker 3: Yes, Gabe, Dare we ask what your favorite Disney Channel
- 40:19Speaker 3: original was?
- 40:21Speaker 1: I do? I think it's like so hard because there's
- 40:23Speaker 1: so many legendary Wise Children smart House obviously, but smart
- 40:27Speaker 1: House is scary.
- 40:29Speaker 2: Is scary, It was scary.
- 40:30Speaker 4: I've seen the end of it.
- 40:31Speaker 1: I do think that Xenon is my like FACEE says, yeah,
- 40:37Speaker 1: it's that's a good thing. That's like it's like I
- 40:38Speaker 1: think everyone's favorite, but like I think the only like
- 40:42Speaker 1: the only like Astik would be like my other my
- 40:44Speaker 1: like under the Radar fave is probably the ultimate Christmas gift?
- 40:51Speaker 2: What's that?
- 40:52Speaker 1: It's where Brenda Song and her friend the Girl from
- 40:54Speaker 1: Flight twenty nine down discover that Santa Claus has a
- 40:59Speaker 1: tool that could prevent climate change?
- 41:01Speaker 2: What?
- 41:02Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 41:02Speaker 1: Have you never seen it? Also, like Brenna's song is
- 41:04Speaker 1: like baby and I think it was like whoever first
- 41:06Speaker 1: big Disney Channel movies. So her and her best friend
- 41:09Speaker 1: they're in southern California and then they fine. Santa Claus
- 41:13Speaker 1: is like workshop and he has this device that can
- 41:15Speaker 1: control weather, and so they steal it and they make
- 41:18Speaker 1: it snow in California and so it like budges up
- 41:22Speaker 1: everything and then an evil weatherman tries to steal it
- 41:25Speaker 1: from these two two Like preteen, it is.
- 41:28Speaker 2: Kind of coming back to me now a lot. Wow,
- 41:31Speaker 2: that's incredible. I think my favorite d com is Halloween Town,
- 41:36Speaker 2: as basic as that is, or maybe maybe no, it's
- 41:40Speaker 2: it's the original, not Halloween Town too.
- 41:42Speaker 1: Calibars Revenge and then there are three with Sarah Paxton.
- 41:46Speaker 2: Yeah, because that that girl got booted past and now
- 41:50Speaker 2: her whole thing is like she's the girl from Halloween
- 41:54Speaker 2: Town and she married.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Married Calbary Calibar. That's Calibar's Revenge. That is I wonder
- 42:01Speaker 1: what is going on.
- 42:02Speaker 3: It's actually so like so many different names where its
- 42:05Speaker 3: phrases that can only be known with you know, knowing
- 42:08Speaker 3: Disney Channel original movie.
- 42:10Speaker 2: Do you think they do role play when they have sex?
- 42:14Speaker 1: But like from other dcons, So who's Calibar.
- 42:16Speaker 4: Who's Calibar?
- 42:18Speaker 1: Okay, this Halloween Town is the grandchildren of w Reynolds
- 42:25Speaker 1: find out that there are families from Halloween Town, a
- 42:27Speaker 1: magical place where Halloween every single.
- 42:29Speaker 2: Day, which is where I want to live.
- 42:31Speaker 1: Yeah, and then so they go to Halloween Town. But
- 42:34Speaker 1: then there's this evil plot by someone who's turning the
- 42:39Speaker 1: the people of Halloween Town into like statues or something. Yeah,
- 42:43Speaker 1: something like that. I remember that scene really scared me
- 42:45Speaker 1: as a kid, actually, and his name is Calibar.
- 42:48Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 42:49Speaker 1: But then in a second movie, Calibar's Revenge, it's his son,
- 42:53Speaker 1: and then the evil has leaked its way into the
- 42:56Speaker 1: real world. And the only way they realize that they
- 42:59Speaker 1: can versus spells by saying that backwards.
- 43:03Speaker 2: Which is which would be really hard to do kind
- 43:06Speaker 2: of on the fly.
- 43:07Speaker 3: Yeah, sure, but you know it's how spells work. Everybody
- 43:10Speaker 3: knows that.
- 43:11Speaker 1: So anyways, so these two Disney Channel movie stars ended
- 43:16Speaker 1: up reconnecting a year later and noo, they're married.
- 43:19Speaker 3: Wait, so was Halloween Town among like the the kind
- 43:22Speaker 3: of like decoms that everybody loved I think the Golden Era.
- 43:26Speaker 3: To me, it sounds like it's just one of the
- 43:28Speaker 3: ones that stick out, and so in my mind, I
- 43:29Speaker 3: was like, it must be like top ten or something
- 43:31Speaker 3: like they're tough five like, but there's so many like I.
- 43:34Speaker 2: Think Halloween Town probably has the longevity because it's holiday based,
- 43:41Speaker 2: it's seasonal, you can watch it every year at the
- 43:44Speaker 2: same time, and there's the nostalgia of it all. I
- 43:47Speaker 2: don't know, what do you think are the crown jewels
- 43:49Speaker 2: of dcoms.
- 43:51Speaker 1: I think definitely Xenoen, Halloween Town, Connect, Kelly I'm Cheetah Girl.
- 44:00Speaker 3: Oh I fell asleep to that movie as a trauma response.
- 44:06Speaker 1: Adrian Bilin would not be happy to hear that, neither
- 44:09Speaker 1: with Keeye Williams. For younger generation, they love Lemonade Mouth
- 44:13Speaker 1: starring Haley Kyoko, Bridgite Medler.
- 44:15Speaker 2: Kaylee Hyoko started out as the Disney Channel.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Curly Hailey Kyoko.
- 44:19Speaker 2: Hailey Kyoko. I thought you said, Kaylee, Kaylee, you were
- 44:23Speaker 2: a coconut Coca nut a Coca pa. Hailey Keyoko started
- 44:28Speaker 2: as a Disney Channel Curly Yeah.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Lesbian and Jesus yes, and she has a very lesbian haircut. Great, yeah,
- 44:36Speaker 1: what other I mean? There's obviously even Stevens. A lot
- 44:39Speaker 1: of like the the like the big Disney Channel shows
- 44:42Speaker 1: also had their own like original movies like im Possible
- 44:45Speaker 1: had a d com and.
- 44:48Speaker 2: Some of them had actual theatrical films, like the Lizzie
- 44:51Speaker 2: McGuire movie.
- 44:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I think she was the only one that got
- 44:54Speaker 1: that though.
- 44:54Speaker 2: Ye, well, because Lucy McGuire was the moment Lucy maguire
- 44:58Speaker 2: kind of took over culture for a second for sure,
- 45:01Speaker 2: for sure. Harry Christmas Lizzy McGuire, as Aaron Carter once said,
- 45:04Speaker 2: rest in peace.
- 45:05Speaker 1: Did you grow watching Lizzy McGuire at all?
- 45:07Speaker 3: You know, Lizzie McGuire was available on Saturdays in my
- 45:10Speaker 3: household what they called it? What was I think growing
- 45:13Speaker 3: up it was called one Saturday Morning or whatever, where
- 45:15Speaker 3: like we got the cable shows for like one one morning.
- 45:19Speaker 3: So yeah, I guess I did kind of grow up
- 45:22Speaker 3: with with Hillary Duff as someone like in the culture,
- 45:24Speaker 3: Lizzy McGuire was someone that I wanted to be. But
- 45:26Speaker 3: I didn't watch the show regularly, so I only knew
- 45:29Speaker 3: so much about it, Like when Miranda has an eating
- 45:31Speaker 3: disorder for one episode and then it just goes away
- 45:34Speaker 3: and it's fine.
- 45:34Speaker 1: Oh yeah, because she faints from almost like dancing too much.
- 45:38Speaker 4: Yeah, why ask.
- 45:39Speaker 1: Because one of my like favorite sort of like seeing
- 45:41Speaker 1: with Latino culture growing up was they go on a
- 45:44Speaker 1: Mexican game show McGuire because Miranda's cousin is like, oh,
- 45:49Speaker 1: we can win all this money. I know Spanish, We're good,
- 45:53Speaker 1: And then they go on and he gets eliminated. No,
- 45:55Speaker 1: he doesn't get limited. He gets like like trapcarted or
- 45:58Speaker 1: something and has to be put in a cage. So
- 46:00Speaker 1: it's as three of them left to their own devices,
- 46:03Speaker 1: not knowing. Not knowing Spanish was honestly a core memory
- 46:10Speaker 1: for me to grow.
- 46:11Speaker 3: The kind of plot place, the plot twist and developments
- 46:15Speaker 3: of these movies feels absolutely insane to watch, like as
- 46:19Speaker 3: an adult. I again have really not watched.
- 46:22Speaker 2: That many Disney Channel original.
- 46:24Speaker 3: Movies, but I did watch the Lizzie McGuire movie last
- 46:28Speaker 3: year with Ash, our friend Ash, and do all of
- 46:33Speaker 3: the movies like completely like like fabricate and flip in
- 46:38Speaker 3: plot like immediately, and it's like the stupidest thing you've
- 46:41Speaker 3: ever heard, Like it makes no actual like physical sense
- 46:44Speaker 3: like what they're doing.
- 46:45Speaker 1: I mean, I would argue that Smart House actually reflects
- 46:47Speaker 1: today's I think Smart House was incredible time. Yeah yeah, yeah,
- 46:53Speaker 1: I feel like for my first, like my first full
- 46:55Speaker 1: time writing job. Somewhere I wrote about how like Disney
- 46:58Speaker 1: Channel or some movie like like predicted the future of technology,
- 47:02Speaker 1: which smart house Xenon living on a space station. Elon
- 47:07Speaker 1: Musk wants what Xenon has say.
- 47:10Speaker 3: That Xenon's hair is like how the girlies are doing
- 47:14Speaker 3: it now, Like it's full like early aughtscore like blonde tips.
- 47:18Speaker 1: Oh yeah, and Protozoa.
- 47:20Speaker 4: Yeah that's what I meant.
- 47:21Speaker 1: Yeah, Protozoa also favorite tip. One of my little tidbits
- 47:26Speaker 1: about the Xenon movies I love is that in the
- 47:29Speaker 1: original movie, her best friend has played with they Raven Simonie.
- 47:32Speaker 1: In the second movie they replaced her with shady A Simmons,
- 47:34Speaker 1: as if we're not going to recognize that this is
- 47:36Speaker 1: a different black girl. And in the third movie they
- 47:39Speaker 1: bring back Raven Simonie. Kay yeahs And they just no
- 47:43Speaker 1: questions asked.
- 47:44Speaker 3: Wait, I wasn't Raven already? He was she already huge
- 47:48Speaker 3: by the first.
- 47:48Speaker 2: Xenon movie or no, I think the first Zenon movie
- 47:51Speaker 2: is before.
- 47:52Speaker 4: That's so Raven it was, and it's so crazy to.
- 47:56Speaker 3: Think about replacing someone like Raven. Yeah, that's embarrassing for them.
- 48:01Speaker 1: But no, but Shady Simon's iconic because she is in
- 48:03Speaker 1: the color of friendship.
- 48:05Speaker 4: Wait, I've heard about the color of friendship. I haven't.
- 48:09Speaker 4: Oh my god.
- 48:10Speaker 3: Okay, Gabe, that's when I think, Okay, the most talk
- 48:14Speaker 3: about Prescian and inter racial.
- 48:16Speaker 4: Uh you know.
- 48:17Speaker 1: I think the premise is a white girl from South
- 48:19Speaker 1: Africa comes and stays with a black family in the States,
- 48:23Speaker 1: and then she realizes there's like the color.
- 48:28Speaker 2: Well she's like, have you guys heard of apartheid?
- 48:31Speaker 3: Well, from what I understand, this is what ashe told me,
- 48:34Speaker 3: is that like the white family is like kind of bringing.
- 48:37Speaker 4: This exchange student.
- 48:38Speaker 3: I think it's thinking it's going to be a black
- 48:39Speaker 3: student from South Africa, and then she comes and then
- 48:42Speaker 3: she's like, I'm white.
- 48:43Speaker 2: And then her.
- 48:44Speaker 3: Dad is like, she's like a bad person, right, Like
- 48:47Speaker 3: the white girl is actually a bad person here. Her
- 48:49Speaker 3: dad is like an apartheid cop or something.
- 48:51Speaker 1: I don't remember the details, cause that sounds right right, I'm.
- 48:55Speaker 4: Sure that was it. It was probably that her dad
- 48:57Speaker 4: was an apartheid cop.
- 48:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:58Speaker 1: Also, for the listeners that know Shady Simons work strange,
- 49:02Speaker 1: He's up like Colsey High very familiar.
- 49:04Speaker 2: No, no way, that's that's a.
- 49:05Speaker 1: Whole other that was. It was on Discovery Kids, and
- 49:08Speaker 1: it was.
- 49:09Speaker 4: It was on Discovery.
- 49:11Speaker 1: It was low key. I guess it was kind of
- 49:12Speaker 1: was a rip off of Buffy because it was a
- 49:14Speaker 1: boarding school on top of a black hole and so strange.
- 49:17Speaker 2: That is a Buffy rip off. Well there's other there's
- 49:20Speaker 2: another Buffy Disney Channel connection because Miranda from Lizzy McGuire
- 49:24Speaker 2: Lalaine was in season seven of Buffy as one of
- 49:27Speaker 2: the potential Slayers who spoiler alert hunk herself.
- 49:31Speaker 1: Yes, and then the first comes back and it's like
- 49:33Speaker 1: playing with them.
- 49:35Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 49:35Speaker 1: Just the the universe is just so is so complicated.
- 49:40Speaker 2: It is. So I watched Disney Channel, like, you know,
- 50:05Speaker 2: cause I'm like a firm millennial and so I watched
- 50:10Speaker 2: I guess what would be like the Golden Age, the
- 50:12Speaker 2: early years of Disney Channel. So I was watching when
- 50:15Speaker 2: That's So Raven was on Lindsay maguire, that kind of stuff,
- 50:18Speaker 2: and even then I was maybe like a smidge old
- 50:22Speaker 2: for it. So I missed the whole second generation where
- 50:26Speaker 2: Arianna was on it.
- 50:29Speaker 1: Who oh no, she was on the Nickelodeon jo for me,
- 50:34Speaker 1: trying to correct.
- 50:36Speaker 4: Who whoa whoa game Space y'all should have seen.
- 50:40Speaker 2: It was like, who oh, I forgot what show is that?
- 50:43Speaker 1: She was on Victorious and then got her own spin
- 50:46Speaker 1: off with Jeanett mccurty, Right, Jeanet mccurty of I'm Glad
- 50:50Speaker 1: my mother died Sammy Cap Wait, so we were were
- 50:54Speaker 1: the nick was Nickelodeon and Disney always at odds. I
- 50:57Speaker 1: don't know they were at odds, but it was there
- 50:59Speaker 1: was almost like never any crossed over, like it was
- 51:02Speaker 1: unheard of to be able to dip into both ponds.
- 51:05Speaker 1: It was like DC and Marvel dead ass well actually is.
- 51:09Speaker 3: No, See there's been crossover with DC at Marble. I
- 51:12Speaker 3: guess with like X Men stuff.
- 51:15Speaker 2: No, x Men, yeah, x Men's Marvel. It was twentieth
- 51:19Speaker 2: century Fox. But no, it's Marvel. Oh I thought it was.
- 51:21Speaker 3: Indeed, I thought it was momentarily in the DC universe.
- 51:24Speaker 1: No, we're here to educate, you.
- 51:27Speaker 3: Know, Well, I don't know anything about Marvel D.
- 51:29Speaker 1: I think the second gen was like Hannah Montana right, okay, hand.
- 51:33Speaker 2: Because Hannah Montana was my I have younger sisters who
- 51:37Speaker 2: were twenty and they used to watch Hannah Montana.
- 51:40Speaker 1: Like Hannah Montana where there's a Bailey place with Selena gomet.
- 51:42Speaker 2: Okay, yeah, I missed on. Are we team Selena here? Oh?
- 51:45Speaker 1: Absolutely me Latina Rena. I'm and so. I also have
- 51:52Speaker 1: a younger sister, and I remember just every morning to
- 51:55Speaker 1: get like for her to like get ready, my mom
- 51:57Speaker 1: would have to play the Hannah Montana like see so
- 52:01Speaker 1: like I like was like a teenager boy, like like
- 52:03Speaker 1: pretending to like not enjoy hearing the best of both
- 52:07Speaker 1: worlds every single morning.
- 52:08Speaker 2: God, let me say, let me say that see you
- 52:11Speaker 2: again went triple platinum in my home?
- 52:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah, bops, bops.
- 52:15Speaker 4: Bob's my best friend.
- 52:16Speaker 2: Leslie said, Oh, she's just being Miley.
- 52:18Speaker 1: Well, and you are, like Dolly pardon stands as everyone is,
- 52:21Speaker 1: especially the two of you. And I mean she is
- 52:23Speaker 1: on hand Montana.
- 52:25Speaker 2: Yes, she's famously Miley's godmother.
- 52:27Speaker 3: Well. I think also that that moment in Dolly's life
- 52:30Speaker 3: was like a kind of reinvigoration of her career because
- 52:33Speaker 3: I don't remember where where I read this, but before Miley,
- 52:39Speaker 3: rather before being on like Miley's show and being her godmother.
- 52:42Speaker 2: Uh.
- 52:43Speaker 3: The majority of Dolly's demographic was like over the age
- 52:47Speaker 3: of fifty, and when she got on Hannah Montana and
- 52:51Speaker 3: like had this kind of like new pivot in her life.
- 52:55Speaker 3: The other her demographic became majority under fifty.
- 52:58Speaker 1: We love I love us Churchy Queen.
- 53:00Speaker 2: You know Billy Ray Cyrus would suck.
- 53:04Speaker 1: No, but a dad wasn't the mailely place I would.
- 53:06Speaker 2: I think, I don't know what he looks like.
- 53:09Speaker 1: On the record.
- 53:10Speaker 4: Are we going to talk about the most fuckable.
- 53:12Speaker 2: Dad the delves of Disney Channel?
- 53:15Speaker 1: Like rewinding now, I'm like, oh, the dads are hot.
- 53:18Speaker 2: The dad from Lisay McGuire is kind of hot in
- 53:21Speaker 2: a nerdy way. There was there were these kids that
- 53:28Speaker 2: I used to babysit for and their mom looked exactly
- 53:32Speaker 2: like the mom from Lisa McGuire, and it's always tripped me.
- 53:34Speaker 2: The fuck that's a really specific look. Yeah, and I
- 53:36Speaker 2: once had a sex droom about her as a teenager,
- 53:40Speaker 2: which is that I should have known then that I
- 53:42Speaker 2: was bisexual ahead of your time.
- 53:43Speaker 1: Well, I'm speaking of MILFs. Raven Simoney and Alex Vanderpoolt
- 53:47Speaker 1: are back on Disney Channel as Mom's on Raven's Home. Yes,
- 53:51Speaker 1: but do you know that Raven did you see that
- 53:53Speaker 1: TikTok that was making the rounds where Raven said that
- 53:55Speaker 1: she specifically asked for Raven not to be a Lesbie
- 54:00Speaker 1: being in the sequel show, like she didn't want her
- 54:05Speaker 1: and Chelsea to get together. So I thought she I
- 54:08Speaker 1: thought Raven was kind of trolling people.
- 54:10Speaker 2: Really, I don't know.
- 54:11Speaker 4: I don't think so that sounds like Raven to me.
- 54:13Speaker 2: Yeah, because she was. She was like Raven the person
- 54:17Speaker 2: and Raven the character are different people whoa I think
- 54:21Speaker 2: she has some.
- 54:21Speaker 4: Internal as homophobias.
- 54:23Speaker 1: Well, and speaking of Raven, it was a big moment
- 54:25Speaker 1: for me when as Marie from America's Next Top Model
- 54:29Speaker 1: British Invasion cycle, she was dating Raven Semonier. Oh you
- 54:33Speaker 1: guys don't remember.
- 54:34Speaker 4: No, I don't know this. I've never seen the British.
- 54:37Speaker 1: So the queer woman who was actually a front runner
- 54:39Speaker 1: of her cycle. But then she didn't want to use
- 54:42Speaker 1: butt pads during the booty Tooch's video challenge. I think
- 54:47Speaker 1: she low he got eliminated because of that, and then
- 54:50Speaker 1: it was it broke.
- 54:51Speaker 2: I support that.
- 54:52Speaker 3: Wait, everyone had to use butt pads. They were required
- 54:54Speaker 3: to use butt pads.
- 54:55Speaker 1: When Tyro was teaching about botototoaching, So there was Smith
- 54:59Speaker 1: and then.
- 55:00Speaker 3: Teaching was the second wave of Tyra's second wave feminism.
- 55:03Speaker 1: Yeah yeah, yeah, I'm she made them like pad their
- 55:07Speaker 1: but I mean maybe it.
- 55:10Speaker 2: Was it was it was the pro BBL. Tyra Banks
- 55:20Speaker 2: invented BL.
- 55:22Speaker 1: I'm but on Raven's home. So they aren't gay together,
- 55:26Speaker 1: but they live in Chicago.
- 55:30Speaker 2: Could be Also, it's wild.
- 55:32Speaker 1: Because in the in the new series, Raven has two
- 55:36Speaker 1: twin children and only one of them has visions. It's
- 55:38Speaker 1: a recessive it's.
- 55:40Speaker 3: A recessive gam If they lived in Chicago, they definitely
- 55:44Speaker 3: lived in Andersonville.
- 55:45Speaker 4: Let's say that.
- 55:46Speaker 1: I think they are off the red line, so they
- 55:48Speaker 1: probably are near Andersonville.
- 55:49Speaker 4: Okay, great, great.
- 55:51Speaker 1: What's that restaurant called with the with the Swedish meetball.
- 55:54Speaker 4: And I wish I knew? Oh my god.
- 55:58Speaker 1: It's wild because ra Chelsea's husband, the father of her child,
- 56:04Speaker 1: is in jail because he embezzled her money that she
- 56:08Speaker 1: got off of creating a mop that was like a lightsaber.
- 56:14Speaker 1: That is the most Disney Channel ass plot, except for
- 56:17Speaker 1: the prison part. That is, usually they don't they don't
- 56:20Speaker 1: go there, Oh really they don't. That seems like something
- 56:23Speaker 1: that they would employ all the time, because like, I
- 56:25Speaker 1: think something that's in a lot of like Disney IP
- 56:28Speaker 1: especially like d coms is that the parent is missing
- 56:31Speaker 1: for whatever reason, and so there, I don't know, I
- 56:34Speaker 1: figure they would just always put the Well, Raven's mom
- 56:36Speaker 1: does disappear like halfway through the original series, remember.
- 56:39Speaker 2: No, I didn't watch all the way through.
- 56:41Speaker 1: And everyone was like, what happened to her?
- 56:43Speaker 4: So she was in jail?
- 56:44Speaker 1: Well no, I think she like went to go do
- 56:45Speaker 1: a grad program in London or same thing like that.
- 56:49Speaker 1: Did you ever want to eat the Chill Girl was
- 56:51Speaker 1: the child Girl that was Raven's father's restaurant, Yeah, totally. Yeah,
- 56:56Speaker 1: I want to see like a menu at the Chill
- 56:57Speaker 1: Girl Child Girl pop up?
- 56:59Speaker 4: Yeah, Chill Wings.
- 57:02Speaker 2: Do things they serve Nicki minaj Wings, But the Childreners.
- 57:10Speaker 3: Is there, like I kind of want to, like we've
- 57:12Speaker 3: been like jumping all around. Is there like one that
- 57:15Speaker 3: you could deep dive on, like or one that you
- 57:18Speaker 3: just like would talk about forever?
- 57:20Speaker 2: Is it? Is it zeno On?
- 57:21Speaker 4: Is it one of the first ones you mentioned or another.
- 57:23Speaker 1: One in terms of movies, probably Xenon. I'm I just
- 57:28Speaker 1: I love it because, like the idea of literally her
- 57:33Speaker 1: being grounded. It's the smartest thing I ever heard. She
- 57:38Speaker 1: gets she gets in trouble on a space station because
- 57:40Speaker 1: she goes for a space walk, and then so her
- 57:42Speaker 1: parents decide to ground her, Okay, send her to live
- 57:46Speaker 1: with her her on Earth.
- 57:48Speaker 4: Oh that is funny. Wow, that's clever.
- 57:50Speaker 1: And then she gets bullied for being from Spain.
- 57:56Speaker 3: So did everyone have a crush on Protozoa because I
- 57:59Speaker 3: feel like that. I don't know, I don't remember how
- 58:01Speaker 3: it came up or why. But I posted something on
- 58:05Speaker 3: Instagram and I think I had blonde hair something. Everyone
- 58:07Speaker 3: was like, you look like Protozoa and I was like, well,
- 58:10Speaker 3: I don't know about that. But also everyone was saying
- 58:12Speaker 3: that that he was like a huge crush.
- 58:15Speaker 1: He was like the hairy styles.
- 58:19Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 58:19Speaker 1: Well, because so the whole and the whole thing is
- 58:22Speaker 1: that Protozoa is going to be the first pop star
- 58:24Speaker 1: to perform in space on a on a space station.
- 58:27Speaker 1: That xs from.
- 58:29Speaker 2: When she was gonna go to space, which which is yeah.
- 58:34Speaker 1: Looking back on it was that maybe a like Lance
- 58:36Speaker 1: bas like wink wink.
- 58:38Speaker 4: Yeah, maybe the tips for sure, I mean.
- 58:41Speaker 1: Yeah, And then also I sing that song as a
- 58:43Speaker 1: fucking bob zoom totally my heart go boom boom.
- 58:48Speaker 2: There was there's some good music that came out of
- 58:51Speaker 2: you know, the Disney Channel universe.
- 58:53Speaker 1: Oh underrated when actually thinking of do you remember pixel Perfect?
- 58:57Speaker 2: What's pixel perfect?
- 58:58Speaker 1: So pixel Perfect is underrated? With the song are Bobs?
- 59:01Speaker 1: So the premise is Ricky omen a fill the future fame.
- 59:06Speaker 1: He decides to so his like best friend is in
- 59:09Speaker 1: this band. It's kind of a flop because they like
- 59:11Speaker 1: love like moody ballads. The essentially like the boy genius
- 59:14Speaker 1: of the Disney Channel and he's like, okay, how do
- 59:18Speaker 1: we like spice it up? So he creates a hologram
- 59:21Speaker 1: using like all these images of different girls to be
- 59:24Speaker 1: like this pop star and she debuts at like the
- 59:30Speaker 1: School Talent Show and everyone's oh I.
- 59:32Speaker 2: Do remember this?
- 59:34Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 59:34Speaker 2: Speaking of music though, there always used to be those
- 59:37Speaker 2: moments where they had, like when they were re releasing
- 59:40Speaker 2: like the line King on VHS, they would have all
- 59:43Speaker 2: the Disney Channel stars sing a cover of Circle of
- 59:46Speaker 2: Life or something.
- 59:47Speaker 1: The Disney Channel Circle of Stars?
- 59:49Speaker 4: Is that what they.
- 59:52Speaker 1: So that was like Disney Channel's like music arm. So
- 59:56Speaker 1: they would get all these like Buzzy Disney Channel people
- 59:59Speaker 1: to come in sing songs. So for I was gonna say,
- 1:00:03Speaker 1: for Lord, I wish it was they had they had
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: Circle and then it would just be Raven bars like.
- 1:00:12Speaker 2: And it would play like during the commercials between episodes
- 1:00:16Speaker 2: of That's Raven. And they also use them for other
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: things like I was reminded recently of the weird Post
- 1:00:24Speaker 2: nine to eleven p s as that they had them
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: make where it was like the Disney Channel stars talking
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: about terrorism and like basically like promoting like American nationalism.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: Was there songs involved? No, Okay, it was just them
- 1:00:38Speaker 2: talk like having serious conversations about terrorism.
- 1:00:42Speaker 1: Because then they had like Ta Tamara for One of.
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: Those speaking of was Twitches Disney or Nickelodeon Channel, Disney Channel. Okay,
- 1:00:49Speaker 2: Twitches is kind of iconic.
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: Iconic and also what's her face? One of the their
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: their like advisors was Jocelyn from Shit's Creek.
- 1:00:58Speaker 3: Oh. I watched a lot of Twitches and some of
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: Twitch's what's twitches to call it?
- 1:01:04Speaker 4: Yeah, twitches to t oh, which is just do it wow?
- 1:01:09Speaker 2: Their mine went there.
- 1:01:11Speaker 3: I watched a lot of them during a very long
- 1:01:14Speaker 3: manicure where my manicure has just had it on.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: That actually a Pamberham No, it wasn't.
- 1:01:19Speaker 4: Pamper Down's Unford was here in New York.
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: It was based off.
- 1:01:24Speaker 2: It was based on a book. Read the book?
- 1:01:26Speaker 1: How are the books not good?
- 1:01:49Speaker 3: I'm trying to imagine like what Disney's like musical arm
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: like would look like, and I it just sounds like
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: hollow and sad, like I'm imagining like Miley like shackle
- 1:01:57Speaker 3: to a radiator.
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: Yeah, well, because a lot of the girls they like
- 1:02:00Speaker 2: tried to put like if they were popular on Disney Channel,
- 1:02:05Speaker 2: they would try to give them a music career, like
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: that's what happened with Hillary Duff.
- 1:02:08Speaker 3: I also watched the opening sequence of Camp Rock and
- 1:02:12Speaker 3: now I know, wow, I've never I've obviously never seen either,
- 1:02:18Speaker 3: but like that was was that Demi's first movie?
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: That was like Demie's intro, So it's preparing for this.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: I actually was watching clips. Are you are you all
- 1:02:23Speaker 1: familiar with the Disney Channel games?
- 1:02:25Speaker 2: No, it was like it's not like the Hunger Games.
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: It was yeah, it was like that meets Survivor meets
- 1:02:30Speaker 1: Disney Channels. So they put them on team. It was
- 1:02:32Speaker 1: like the Olympics. And they had all these Disney Channel
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: stars and then so Sabrina Bryant from Cheetah Girls, she
- 1:02:39Speaker 1: has all these like old vlogs that you can like
- 1:02:42Speaker 1: watch and it's like really the only bts like footage
- 1:02:45Speaker 1: of the games, and Demi's like Demi's like in the bathroom,
- 1:02:49Speaker 1: like getting ready with them, and seas like here's Demi,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: like like new to the channel, and it's like did
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: you hear that? They're like showing camp Rock to press
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: and it's like Sabrina's clearly a little bit older and
- 1:02:59Speaker 1: like understands but presses and like all the other girls
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: like what is going on anyways? And then so on
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: the digital games they also meet, although Jonahs brothers Bee
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: on different teams.
- 1:03:10Speaker 2: Smart Yeah, yeah, so Jonahs brothers, that whole era, Jonah's brothers,
- 1:03:14Speaker 2: Hannah Montana, Wizards of Waverley Place, Sweet Life of Zach
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: and Cody. It's like just when I kind of moved
- 1:03:22Speaker 2: on to more adult entertainment, not not in the poor anyway,
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: it sounded like it, but didn't They all like crossovers
- 1:03:31Speaker 2: were a big thing between the shows.
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: Yeah, so there's the that's so Sweet Life of Hannah Montana,
- 1:03:37Speaker 1: No and so it is that's a raven Sweet Life
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: Hannah Montana crossover, and it's essentially it was trying them
- 1:03:42Speaker 1: trying to redirect like attention to like new shows. So
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: that was when Hannah Montana's first season I think, and
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: so you know, that's a Raven was already really established.
- 1:03:50Speaker 1: Sweet Life was like getting big already. And then so
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: they were trying to get people to watch Hannah Montana
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: and yeah there was and so they did, and so
- 1:03:59Speaker 1: they and then there was one with Wizards Way Place,
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: sweet Life on Deck and Hannah Montana again as.
- 1:04:05Speaker 2: Well, what's sweet Life on Deck?
- 1:04:07Speaker 3: Is it that on on a ship?
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: Yes? So after that the Sweet Life of Zack and
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: Cody concluded. They then booted as Tidal and the mom are.
- 1:04:23Speaker 4: Their careers, their careers and livelihood.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: I'm doing one of those tiktoks.
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: They really died.
- 1:04:32Speaker 2: This morning, Like this is how I tell you.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: They relocate them onto a cruise ship and that was
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: w Ryan's first big gig.
- 1:04:42Speaker 2: She's the girlfriend the meme who's like, oh, the one
- 1:04:45Speaker 2: that's like that Swinser hair, and then she's looking at
- 1:04:48Speaker 2: the guy from My Lotus.
- 1:04:49Speaker 1: Yeah, well me and Rose know him as the guy
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: with the Magician. Yes, yes, we do.
- 1:04:53Speaker 2: Oh he was a magician. He was on The Magicians.
- 1:04:56Speaker 2: Also a main character on Magicians or no, he was
- 1:04:59Speaker 2: a side character. He was kind of kind of a
- 1:05:00Speaker 2: running joke that he was lame.
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:05:04Speaker 2: Also, High School Musical was a dcon.
- 1:05:07Speaker 1: Originally and and did a theatrical release.
- 1:05:09Speaker 2: Yeah, and gave us Vanessa Hudgens my queen.
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: Well they you know, Diddy Channel loves a racially ambiguous
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: Filpino woman.
- 1:05:17Speaker 4: Disney Channel loves a racially ambiguous anything.
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: Hudgens.
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: Yeah, and gender ambiguo ambiguous.
- 1:05:28Speaker 4: Honestly, I mean, right.
- 1:05:31Speaker 2: Do you think Olivia Rio is gender ambiguous? Is that
- 1:05:35Speaker 2: her next era?
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: Honestly? I mean no, I think she's learned from.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: That's what Driver Lessons is actually about her changing gender
- 1:05:44Speaker 1: mark change to an ex. I'm like, as much as
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: I like idolized all those all them, I'm like, it
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: definitely seems like it was like a cursed Chalice.
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: You know, definitely are any of the DCM stars like
- 1:05:58Speaker 3: good people now? Hillary Duff seems stable and happy.
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: Love Younger, Oh.
- 1:06:03Speaker 2: My god, I watched an episode of Younger last night
- 1:06:05Speaker 2: because my best friend's watching it with his boyfriend, and
- 1:06:07Speaker 2: I went over to his apartment and we watched an
- 1:06:09Speaker 2: episode episode. The episode really go to the Hampton's book
- 1:06:11Speaker 2: fair and Liza kisses Charles and Josh sees it and
- 1:06:16Speaker 2: he was about to ask her to marry him.
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: Yeah, name CHARLINI Young Younger basically is like a Disney
- 1:06:22Speaker 1: Channel show for adults. Yeah, it's Lizzie McGuire ended up
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: working publishing.
- 1:06:27Speaker 2: Yes, yeah, yeah, we need to do an episode of
- 1:06:30Speaker 2: On Younger. No, Younger was incredibly important to me, I've heard.
- 1:06:34Speaker 1: Also, I block out the fact that Matthew Morrison's on
- 1:06:37Speaker 1: it and his whole bit is that he has a
- 1:06:38Speaker 1: huge car and.
- 1:06:40Speaker 2: Focks a goat. Yeah no he doesn't. He sucks a goat,
- 1:06:43Speaker 2: a literal goat. Yeah.
- 1:06:45Speaker 1: On Younger, Why.
- 1:06:47Speaker 2: Because mister Shue jump scare. That's wild. Well you've never
- 1:06:53Speaker 2: like you've never fucked a farm animal?
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: Yeah, sure, no, totally normal thing, back to like well adjusted,
- 1:06:59Speaker 1: didn't you? Bridget Medler, who I think was a little
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: bit past our time, But she was in Lemonade now
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: and then.
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: She was in Beyonce's Lemonade.
- 1:07:08Speaker 1: She plays the bad She is now just finished. I
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: think a grad program, My Master program. I t oh,
- 1:07:14Speaker 1: good for her, and not the tire Banks version, you know,
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: like an.
- 1:07:18Speaker 4: Actual real.
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: Anybody else like Disney Stars nowadays.
- 1:07:23Speaker 1: Well I did just do you see that clip of
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: Cody Sprouse.
- 1:07:26Speaker 2: Codyrose on call her Daddy's smoke and a capri like
- 1:07:33Speaker 2: like truly very weird person who it needs to go?
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: I'm a Riverdale stand so unfortunately I love Cole Sprouse.
- 1:07:44Speaker 1: I love Brenda song very important to me. She now
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: has a baby with Miccolay Culkin.
- 1:07:50Speaker 4: Oh wait she does.
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: They've been together for a while and now I didn't
- 1:07:54Speaker 1: know that.
- 1:07:54Speaker 3: Wow power couple.
- 1:07:56Speaker 4: Yeah what I mean Brenda?
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: Justice for Brenda. I feel like she disappeared and she
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: never I mean she's doing stuff now, correct.
- 1:08:02Speaker 2: You profiled her, filed her?
- 1:08:04Speaker 1: Yeah, and then it was tied to Dolphe that Hulu
- 1:08:08Speaker 1: show that was with her and Cat Dennings Shane Mitchell.
- 1:08:14Speaker 2: But I like that one girl from it. Yeah, I
- 1:08:17Speaker 2: follow her on TikTok.
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: Did you see when he and Miranda Cosgrove got dinner together?
- 1:08:22Speaker 2: No channel?
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: But yeah, I think I think also Brenda is excited
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: to be a mom, and this seems like on social
- 1:08:33Speaker 1: and stuff. But great.
- 1:08:35Speaker 2: If you could star in any Disney Channel show or
- 1:08:38Speaker 2: original movie, which would it be mm.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: Hmm, like as a child or like the Hot Dolf
- 1:08:45Speaker 1: as the Dolf. Okay, I would love to be back
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: on like let's see, I'm trying to think which ones
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: were shot on location?
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: Now live somewhere in airless lightless like vacuu.
- 1:08:59Speaker 2: Zineon you get to shoot in space.
- 1:09:02Speaker 1: It actually would be fun to be on Raven. I think, yeah,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: like to have a child that has visions, you know,
- 1:09:08Speaker 1: and to be a small business owner. I would love that.
- 1:09:10Speaker 4: What would your what would your role be?
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: I would be I. I would open up, I would
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: be the hot deal if I think hopefully and or
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: maybe I don't even know. I mean, I feel like
- 1:09:21Speaker 1: we're still in the age group of being cast as
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: sibling the brother on That's on Hannah Montana. I was
- 1:09:27Speaker 1: like thirty shout out, oh.
- 1:09:28Speaker 3: Yeah, age, I'm sibling bookable.
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: Honestly, maybe I would be on the Sweet Life so
- 1:09:34Speaker 1: then I can like go do like hotel reviews at
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: like fancy hotels that aren't the Tipton Oh I love that.
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: And also Ashley Ashley Simpson Ashley Tisdall's cover of kiss
- 1:09:44Speaker 1: the girl from the Little Mermaid DVD release slaps No,
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: actually tis little so talented, she deserves fabulous, fabulous.
- 1:09:52Speaker 2: We need to put some respect on Ashley Tisdall's name.
