- 1:37Speaker 6: We always do me.
- 1:42Speaker 1: Hello, everyone, Welcome to Crime Watch Daily. I'm Chris Hansen.
- 1:46Speaker 1: We start with the story of a two year old
- 1:48Speaker 1: boy named Sky. He vanished after his mom says she
- 1:51Speaker 1: left him for more than an hour in the backseat of.
- 1:54Speaker 6: A car our.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Jason Mattera has the story.
- 1:57Speaker 7: Yeah, Chris, this case has really haunted the tight knit
- 1:59Speaker 7: city of police here. Tell me that they've spent more
- 2:02Speaker 7: than fourteen thousand hours and more than two million.
- 2:05Speaker 9: Dollars trying to find little Sky.
- 2:07Speaker 7: Julia, why is this mother running for my questions?
- 2:11Speaker 6: Jayson Mate with Crimewatch Daily.
- 2:13Speaker 7: What does she have to hide?
- 2:15Speaker 6: Why won't you cooperate with the investigation, Julia?
- 2:18Speaker 7: Shouldn't she want to help in any way possible to
- 2:21Speaker 7: find her missing son? Come on, Julia, and maybe the
- 2:24Speaker 7: most pressing question, why is she calling the cops on
- 2:28Speaker 7: me when the cops are dying to talk to her?
- 2:31Speaker 7: You call the cops, but yet you don't want to
- 2:33Speaker 7: cooperate with the police. It all starts with a loving
- 2:40Speaker 7: two year old.
- 2:41Speaker 5: He was like a boy boy love to jump on
- 2:45Speaker 5: me when he was older, and.
- 2:47Speaker 7: His dad, Solomon says, it's his big brown eyes that
- 2:51Speaker 7: can melt any harm.
- 2:52Speaker 5: He was just just pure love.
- 3:00Speaker 7: Happened to Sky Metalwaala on a chilly November day in
- 3:03Speaker 7: Washington State is now a mystery that has investigators scratching
- 3:07Speaker 7: their heads and has everyone else pointing fingers.
- 3:12Speaker 10: Our community wants justice if something really happened to Sky.
- 3:17Speaker 7: Sky's father, born in Pakistan, met his wife, Julia Burryakova,
- 3:21Speaker 7: out of all places, a gas station.
- 3:24Speaker 9: What attracted you to Julia her looks?
- 3:27Speaker 5: Of course, she's beyond beautiful.
- 3:31Speaker 7: Julia a teenager at the time who was born in
- 3:33Speaker 7: the Ukraine, and Solomon hid it off immediately. He said,
- 3:37Speaker 7: she was the love of your life.
- 3:39Speaker 5: She was very giving. She also was very supportive.
- 3:43Speaker 7: The two quickly married and had a daughter named Miley,
- 3:47Speaker 7: but Solomon started to notice some strange things about his
- 3:50Speaker 7: new wife. She would obsessively clean the house three to
- 3:53Speaker 7: four hours a day, seven days a week.
- 3:56Speaker 5: Okay, this is cannot be normal, but that I didn't
- 4:01Speaker 5: really understand the until you.
- 4:03Speaker 7: Know now, and as a mother, Solomon says, Juliet was
- 4:07Speaker 7: really starting to struggle.
- 4:09Speaker 5: Only thing Julia had to do was get up in
- 4:11Speaker 5: the morning, get money, dress and take her to daycare.
- 4:15Speaker 5: And that's it, you know. But she couldn't do it.
- 4:19Speaker 7: After Sky was born, Solomon knew his wife needed help,
- 4:23Speaker 7: especially after he heard these chilling words from his young daughter.
- 4:27Speaker 5: Miley started to say I want to kill myself. Because
- 4:30Speaker 5: Julie was saying it so much when she was around Miley.
- 4:36Speaker 9: I must have been completely disturbing to you.
- 4:37Speaker 5: Yes, it was.
- 4:39Speaker 7: Then, according to court documents, Solomon received a terrifying text
- 4:42Speaker 7: from his wife that said, in part quote, I cannot
- 4:45Speaker 7: live another day. I am dead on the inside anyway,
- 4:48Speaker 7: and have been dead for a long time. Juliet was
- 4:51Speaker 7: immediately committed to a hospital. Months later, after changing medication,
- 4:56Speaker 7: she seemed to be turning things around.
- 4:58Speaker 9: Kriife was good. That's good.
- 5:00Speaker 5: I've just got way good.
- 5:04Speaker 7: But that didn't last long. Julia's tortured ritual of cleaning
- 5:08Speaker 7: the house got even worse. Now she was up to
- 5:11Speaker 7: six hours a day and she even forced the family
- 5:14Speaker 7: to eat outside.
- 5:16Speaker 4: It was just.
- 5:18Speaker 5: Very, very bad.
- 5:20Speaker 7: Solomon says he had no other choice but to divorce
- 5:23Speaker 7: Julia and take custody of the kids, but Juliet wasn't
- 5:27Speaker 7: going to let that happen without a fight.
- 5:30Speaker 10: Julia and her husband were in the middle of a
- 5:32Speaker 10: bitter custody battle.
- 5:33Speaker 7: David Rose, host of Washington's Most Wanted, covered every brutal blow.
- 5:38Speaker 10: We're going back and forth on who would have custody
- 5:41Speaker 10: of Sky and his sister. Both of them had protection
- 5:44Speaker 10: orders against each other, and the kids were caught right
- 5:46Speaker 10: in the middle of this.
- 5:48Speaker 7: Juliet told the court that Solomon was not telling the
- 5:50Speaker 7: truth about her mental illness and obsessive cleaning, and then
- 5:54Speaker 7: she lobbed some very ugly accusations toward him.
- 5:58Speaker 9: After the separation, Juliet and said that you had abused
- 6:01Speaker 9: the children.
- 6:02Speaker 5: When she told me that, I go, what are you
- 6:05Speaker 5: talking about?
- 6:06Speaker 7: In court documents, she also claimed Solomon beat both children
- 6:10Speaker 7: and her with the wooden spoon, a detail backed up
- 6:13Speaker 7: by an independent witness. Most disturbing of all, she even
- 6:16Speaker 7: claimed Solomon sexually.
- 6:18Speaker 9: Abused his daughter.
- 6:19Speaker 5: Why would she say that?
- 6:21Speaker 7: A CPS investigation found that claim to be unfounded, and
- 6:24Speaker 7: Solomon vehemently denies any and all abuse allegations. He even
- 6:29Speaker 7: took a lot of detective test and passed. Still, the
- 6:33Speaker 7: judge awarded full custody. To his wife, what.
- 6:36Speaker 9: Would I like to have your kids taken from you?
- 6:39Speaker 5: I mean, you just killed my whole family.
- 6:42Speaker 7: Because of the nature of the allegations, Solomon would go
- 6:45Speaker 7: a full year without seeing Sky or Miley. Then Juliet
- 6:49Speaker 7: finally gives in and sets up a time.
- 6:52Speaker 5: I was gonna see them.
- 6:53Speaker 7: That wins in, sadly that reunion would never happen. Just
- 6:57Speaker 7: days after their new agreement, Sky suddenly disappears in the
- 7:01Speaker 7: most unbelievable way.
- 7:03Speaker 10: His mom said that Sky was sick that morning, so
- 7:06Speaker 10: she was going to take him to the doctor in Bellevue.
- 7:09Speaker 10: On the way to the doctor, Julia claims that the
- 7:12Speaker 10: vehicle had some kind of car trouble, ran out of gas,
- 7:15Speaker 10: or just wouldn't run.
- 7:17Speaker 7: Julie tells police she grabs her four year old daughter,
- 7:19Speaker 7: Miley and walks a mile to the nearest gas station
- 7:22Speaker 7: for help.
- 7:23Speaker 9: But what about two year old Sky?
- 7:25Speaker 10: Well, the strange thing is she left that little boy
- 7:28Speaker 10: in the car seat in the back by himself. She
- 7:31Speaker 10: goes to the gas station, she doesn't get gas, She
- 7:35Speaker 10: calls a friend to come get her. They go back
- 7:38Speaker 10: to the car and Sky is gone.
- 7:41Speaker 7: What parent would leave their child in the car and
- 7:43Speaker 7: walk a mile to the gas station. Lieutenant Dave de
- 7:47Speaker 7: vaut is one of the lead detectives in Sky's disappearance,
- 7:50Speaker 7: and the.
- 7:50Speaker 9: Child was reportedly sick. Right, exactly does that make sense
- 7:54Speaker 9: to you? No, it does not.
- 7:56Speaker 7: Something Bellevue Chief of Police Steve Milette has a hard
- 7:59Speaker 7: time under standing as well. You're a father, if your
- 8:04Speaker 7: child doesn't feeling well, do you just leave him abandoned
- 8:07Speaker 7: on the side of the road and then walk to
- 8:10Speaker 7: a gas station.
- 8:11Speaker 9: It's a great question. It's a great question.
- 8:16Speaker 7: What's going through your mind when the police officers say
- 8:19Speaker 7: that Sky has gone missing?
- 8:22Speaker 5: I think you're in a shock, so your brain doesn't think.
- 8:28Speaker 7: Bellevue police would launch a massive search for Sky, but
- 8:31Speaker 7: it didn't take long for investigators to find cracks in
- 8:35Speaker 7: Julia's story.
- 8:36Speaker 11: We started recognizing that there was some inconsistencies that caused
- 8:40Speaker 11: us to step back and reevaluate whether or not this
- 8:44Speaker 11: was something that involved foul play. Ms Berakova had reported
- 8:48Speaker 11: that the vehicle had mechanical problems turned out to be
- 8:52Speaker 11: not true. It had plenty of gas in the tank.
- 8:56Speaker 7: So there was gas on the car and nothing mechanically
- 8:58Speaker 7: wrong with it.
- 8:59Speaker 12: Correct.
- 9:00Speaker 9: That's exactly the opposite of what Julia said.
- 9:02Speaker 12: Correct.
- 9:04Speaker 7: So how would Julia explain that? Well, investigators would never
- 9:08Speaker 7: get a chance to ask her.
- 9:10Speaker 12: She was brought down to the station where we were
- 9:12Speaker 12: going to do some follow up discussions. Her attorney came
- 9:16Speaker 12: in and that was the end of our contact with.
- 9:19Speaker 7: A little boy missing, a mother not talking, a father
- 9:23Speaker 7: desperately searching for answers.
- 9:26Speaker 6: Do you believe her?
- 9:26Speaker 5: Hello?
- 9:27Speaker 9: What part of her story does it bring true?
- 9:30Speaker 5: All of it.
- 9:32Speaker 9: Coming up?
- 9:33Speaker 7: What really happened to little Sky? Was it a real
- 9:36Speaker 7: life version of his mom's favorite television show, Law and
- 9:39Speaker 7: Order SVU?
- 9:40Speaker 10: There are a lot of people in this community that
- 9:42Speaker 10: believe that Sky was never in that car in the
- 9:45Speaker 10: first place.
- 9:46Speaker 7: And I go knocking on the door of the one
- 9:48Speaker 7: person who holds the key to this mystery, Julia Buryakhova.
- 9:53Speaker 6: Why won't you cooper away the investigation? Julia?
- 9:57Speaker 8: Did you ever know that you were a registered sexistieity?
- 9:59Speaker 1: Do you have a chance now to look into that camera?
- 10:01Speaker 1: Did you have anything to do with Since disappear, the
- 10:04Speaker 1: Crime Watch Daily has never been afraid to get in
- 10:06Speaker 1: your face and ask the tough questions. Today, our Jason
- 10:10Speaker 1: Mattera is on the keys of a missing little boy.
- 10:12Speaker 1: For some reason, his mother has been ignoring the police,
- 10:16Speaker 1: but you can't ignore us.
- 10:20Speaker 7: How does a happy, go lucky two year old boy
- 10:22Speaker 7: simply vanish off the earth?
- 10:24Speaker 5: My son, it's not here and I don't know where
- 10:28Speaker 5: he is.
- 10:30Speaker 10: Did the little boy get kidnapped? Those kind of things
- 10:32Speaker 10: just don't happen in that community.
- 10:34Speaker 7: David Rose, host of Washington's Most Wanted, has covered the
- 10:37Speaker 7: disappearance of Sky Metawhila from day one.
- 10:41Speaker 10: People are frustrated and they wonder how could somebody do
- 10:44Speaker 10: something to a little boy like this, or how could
- 10:46Speaker 10: a little boy just vanish?
- 10:48Speaker 7: Making things even more troubling, the mounting evidence that foul
- 10:51Speaker 7: play may have been involved, and the one person who
- 10:54Speaker 7: could help solve this case isn't talking.
- 10:57Speaker 12: Julia holds the key to this case, and we beg
- 11:01Speaker 12: her to come forward and talk to us.
- 11:02Speaker 7: Julie is Skuy's mother, who claimed Sky was sick the
- 11:05Speaker 7: day of his disappearance and as she drove him and
- 11:08Speaker 7: his four year old sister to the hospital. She reportedly
- 11:11Speaker 7: had car trouble. Julia told police had her car ran
- 11:14Speaker 7: out of gas at this intersection, so she decided to
- 11:17Speaker 7: leave her two year old son in the car alone
- 11:20Speaker 7: and walked to the nearest gas station, which is about
- 11:22Speaker 7: a mile away. When she returned to the car more
- 11:25Speaker 7: than an hour later, Sky was gone.
- 11:29Speaker 10: Why would she walk a mile with her daughter in
- 11:32Speaker 10: the cold of a November morning to a gas station
- 11:36Speaker 10: doesn't make.
- 11:36Speaker 7: Sense, investigators agree. In fact, a long list of troubling
- 11:40Speaker 7: facts started to surface. First, officers said the car had
- 11:44Speaker 7: nothing wrong with it.
- 11:46Speaker 11: It had plenty of gas in the tank. In fact,
- 11:48Speaker 11: we drove the vehicle, and we drove it for a
- 11:50Speaker 11: long period of time.
- 11:52Speaker 7: Fact number two, She and her ex husband, Solomon were
- 11:55Speaker 7: in the middle of a nuclear sized divorce war, Julia
- 11:58Speaker 7: leveln claims of child abuse, and Solomon maintaining she suffered
- 12:02Speaker 7: from severe mental illness.
- 12:04Speaker 5: We've had, you know, conversations about okay, you need to
- 12:08Speaker 5: go get help, and her response was, you know, I'm fine.
- 12:13Speaker 7: Fact number three, this wasn't the first time little Sky
- 12:16Speaker 7: would be left in a car. Two years earlier, Julia
- 12:19Speaker 7: and Solomon were both sided by police after locking the
- 12:22Speaker 7: little boy in a car while they went shopping inside
- 12:25Speaker 7: a target for fifty five minutes. You're clearly remorseful for
- 12:29Speaker 7: leaving Sky in the car in two thousand and nine,
- 12:33Speaker 7: you just said it was dawn inexcusable.
- 12:36Speaker 5: Right.
- 12:38Speaker 7: And lastly, fact number four, perhaps the strangest of all.
- 12:41Speaker 7: The night before Sky went missing, on Order SVU aired
- 12:45Speaker 7: an episode where a mother tried covering up the death
- 12:48Speaker 7: of her child by claiming the kid was abducted from
- 12:51Speaker 7: a parked car. The show is reportedly Julia's favorite program.
- 12:57Speaker 10: I think it's very possible that little Sky was ever
- 13:00Speaker 10: in the vehicle that day, and that Julia made up
- 13:03Speaker 10: the entire story to cover up something horrible.
- 13:06Speaker 7: Solomon hadn't seen either of his kids in more than
- 13:08Speaker 7: a year because of their ugly divorce, and he believes
- 13:12Speaker 7: Sky was never in that car. So when was the
- 13:14Speaker 7: last time that somebody outside of Julia's family saw Sky?
- 13:19Speaker 5: It was six months before the day he went missing.
- 13:26Speaker 9: Do you have any theories about what happened to Sky?
- 13:29Speaker 5: At this point, I am thinking somehow she sold him
- 13:34Speaker 5: to who. We would love to know that with a.
- 13:37Speaker 7: Way, there's been some chatter that maybe Julia smuggled Sky
- 13:42Speaker 7: out of the country, that he maybe's in Ukraine.
- 13:46Speaker 12: I will say that that has been followed up on
- 13:50Speaker 12: and that we have closed that loop.
- 13:54Speaker 7: It has now been nearly five years since Sky went missing.
- 13:58Speaker 7: Julia has lost custody of their door. Miley, Does Julia
- 14:01Speaker 7: hold the key to unlocking the mystery of Sky's does it?
- 14:05Speaker 9: My God, Yes, she does.
- 14:07Speaker 6: She does.
- 14:08Speaker 11: She's the only person we haven't been able to talk to.
- 14:12Speaker 11: And again I'm begging you, please come forward and talk
- 14:15Speaker 11: to us.
- 14:16Speaker 7: Police are now calling Julia a person of interest in
- 14:19Speaker 7: the case. And the only thing Julia has said since
- 14:22Speaker 7: Guy's disappearance came back in twenty eleven in several angry
- 14:25Speaker 7: emails to ABC News correspondent Neil Karlinski, in which she stated, quote,
- 14:31Speaker 7: my former husband is a sadistic Muslim Pakistani. No one
- 14:34Speaker 7: has any idea. This is all too difficult. What about
- 14:38Speaker 7: what Sky's father, Solomon? Has he been cooperative with the investigation?
- 14:43Speaker 12: Very cooperative?
- 14:44Speaker 11: I have four children, and all I can tell you
- 14:47Speaker 11: I know what my response would be. But that being said,
- 14:51Speaker 11: I don't know why she will not come forward.
- 14:53Speaker 7: Well, since Julia won't go and talk to the police.
- 14:56Speaker 7: We decided to go to her.
- 14:57Speaker 9: Julia's heading to the trunk of her car.
- 14:59Speaker 7: Julia Jason Mattera with Crime Watching Daily.
- 15:04Speaker 6: Why won't you cooperate with the police.
- 15:07Speaker 7: Why won't you cooperate with the police with the investigation
- 15:09Speaker 7: for Sky? We're doing a story on Sky's disappearance. Are
- 15:13Speaker 7: you trying to hide something? Why won't you cooperate with
- 15:15Speaker 7: the investigation? Julia, Sky was your son. It's been now
- 15:21Speaker 7: almost six years. You won't talk to cops. She calls
- 15:25Speaker 7: the cops on us. It's odd that a mom doesn't
- 15:27Speaker 7: want to talk about their missing son. You call the cops,
- 15:32Speaker 7: but yet you don't want to cooperate with the police.
- 15:35Speaker 7: They want the police help now. But when it comes
- 15:38Speaker 7: to Sky's disappearance, not so much. You think Julia may
- 15:44Speaker 7: have seen too much of you and Sky and then
- 15:47Speaker 7: taking it out on him.
- 15:52Speaker 5: I don't want to want to think that. That would
- 15:55Speaker 5: be horrible.
- 15:57Speaker 9: Do you believe your son is still alive?
- 16:00Speaker 5: I'm gonna believe that he is because no one can
- 16:06Speaker 5: prove me he's done.
- 16:08Speaker 7: As for police, they have released new pictures of Julie
- 16:11Speaker 7: at the gas station from the day of Sky's reported disappearance,
- 16:14Speaker 7: hoping to get new eats as well as this new
- 16:17Speaker 7: age progression photo of what the two year old would
- 16:20Speaker 7: look like today. And to say this case is a
- 16:23Speaker 7: personal one for investigators would be an understatement.
- 16:28Speaker 11: Look at this little boy, Look at him. He's two
- 16:31Speaker 11: years old. He could be your son, It could be
- 16:34Speaker 11: my son. I commend you in this program for bringing
- 16:39Speaker 11: this case forward and keeping it alive.
- 16:42Speaker 9: What would finding Sky mean to you? Personally?
- 16:46Speaker 11: Get on my knees and just thank God that we
- 16:49Speaker 11: were able to find him. And I get on my
- 16:51Speaker 11: knees and I pray that he's alive.
- 16:54Speaker 7: Until that day. Chief Steve Milet makes us this promise.
- 16:59Speaker 11: This picture will stay on my desk for as long
- 17:02Speaker 11: as I'm Chief and beyond, and we're going to keep
- 17:04Speaker 11: on searching and following every lead until we bring him
- 17:07Speaker 11: home and return him to his family.
- 17:12Speaker 7: And to do that they need an interview with Julia Barryakova. However,
- 17:15Speaker 7: she's had quite the past twelve months. She gave bert
- 17:18Speaker 7: to a new baby boy, but she was declared an
- 17:21Speaker 7: unfit parent by Child Protective Services. We saw the baby
- 17:24Speaker 7: though still with her. As for the father, his name
- 17:27Speaker 7: is Alan Morgan and he's a convicted felon. They both
- 17:30Speaker 7: have court orders not to see each other.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Coming up the Chicago tanning salon owner police call a serial.
- 17:38Speaker 7: Rapist Mark Mark Winner.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Our Elizabeth Smart is chasing him down and talking to
- 17:45Speaker 2: one of his victims in question what I was wearing, what.
- 17:48Speaker 5: I was doing.
- 17:50Speaker 2: Then a celebration turns to horror as a gunman ripped
- 17:54Speaker 2: through a high school house party to get revenge on
- 17:57Speaker 2: his ex girlfriend for people ranging on.
- 17:59Speaker 4: The ground like Bendred Dead.
- 18:01Speaker 2: The clues he dropped on social media moments before the attack.
- 18:06Speaker 1: That's coming up all right now to a story that
- 18:10Speaker 1: will send chills up the spine of any woman who's
- 18:13Speaker 1: ever been to a tanning salon. And to cover it
- 18:15Speaker 1: for us, we sent in the ultimate victim's advocate, our
- 18:19Speaker 1: own Elizabeth Smart. She joins me now high Elisbeth Chris.
- 18:22Speaker 13: It was one of the most popular tanning salons in Chicago,
- 18:26Speaker 13: but police say the owner was using it to prey
- 18:29Speaker 13: on employees and customers.
- 18:33Speaker 8: He is the man who has several women in the
- 18:35Speaker 8: Chicago area screaming rape Mark Winner free on the streets.
- 18:44Speaker 8: Crime Watch Daily is there after his most recent status
- 18:47Speaker 8: hearing winners facing charges on four vicious rapes over six years.
- 18:52Speaker 8: He's pled not guilty to all counts, most of them
- 18:55Speaker 8: allegedly perpetrated on customers and employees of his now shut
- 18:59Speaker 8: down to salons.
- 19:01Speaker 3: I literally became a person nobody recognized. I wasn't me anymore.
- 19:08Speaker 8: She is Leslie Barton, a former career political consultant and
- 19:12Speaker 8: the first woman to step forward an accuse Winner of
- 19:16Speaker 8: raping her on top of a tanning bed in his salon.
- 19:20Speaker 3: It nearly completely and utterly destroyed, destroyed me.
- 19:25Speaker 8: Crime Watch Daily Special correspondent Elizabeth Smart knows better than
- 19:30Speaker 8: anyone what it is like to be a survivor of
- 19:33Speaker 8: violent sexual abuse at age fourteen, kidnapped, raped and tortured
- 19:38Speaker 8: over nine months while police searched for her. Today, she
- 19:42Speaker 8: is a champion.
- 19:43Speaker 5: You're shaking. It's okay.
- 19:45Speaker 8: No one can hurt you now for victims of sexual
- 19:48Speaker 8: abuse in their fight for justice.
- 19:52Speaker 5: Sorry, okay.
- 20:03Speaker 8: Leslie is sharing her nightmare for the first time on
- 20:06Speaker 8: national television and only with Elizabeth.
- 20:09Speaker 4: Did he say anything to you when you were saying no, men, no,
- 20:13Speaker 4: and I don't want this.
- 20:14Speaker 3: He just ignored it completely, did not acknowledge it. I
- 20:21Speaker 3: didn't exist.
- 20:25Speaker 8: Leslie Barton says her nightmare began it one of Mark
- 20:28Speaker 8: Winner's tanning salons on Chicago's North Shore.
- 20:33Speaker 3: It's a different name now, it's still tanning salon. It
- 20:38Speaker 3: was called the Tanning Oasis.
- 20:40Speaker 4: Is it hard for you to be back?
- 20:43Speaker 5: It's not easy, She says.
- 20:45Speaker 8: She asked Winter if a friend could use her membership
- 20:48Speaker 8: for one day at the salon.
- 20:50Speaker 3: He turned and looked at me and he's like, now
- 20:52Speaker 3: you can't, and he's screaming at the top of his sons.
- 20:56Speaker 8: Later that evening, she says, she visits a neighborhood bar
- 20:59Speaker 8: with a friend.
- 21:00Speaker 3: And I was at this you know, cheers type place
- 21:03Speaker 3: near my house that everyone really does know your name.
- 21:06Speaker 8: And she's surprised to see a neighbor sitting there with
- 21:10Speaker 8: Mark Winner.
- 21:11Speaker 3: I said, you screamed at me as a customer in
- 21:14Speaker 3: your tanning salon. I said, you really need to get
- 21:18Speaker 3: that anger under control. And then he started it very angry.
- 21:24Speaker 3: Yeah really, and I just I walked away.
- 21:27Speaker 8: When who should appear moments later but Mark Winner with
- 21:31Speaker 8: a peace offering in his hand.
- 21:34Speaker 3: He shows up with a drink and he said, you
- 21:38Speaker 3: know what you're right. I'm so sorry.
- 21:41Speaker 8: And then, in what Leslie will forever remember as the
- 21:45Speaker 8: biggest mistake in her life, she says, she took the
- 21:48Speaker 8: offered drink from Winter and I.
- 21:50Speaker 3: Drink maybe half of it, and I sat and talked
- 21:54Speaker 3: to them for a while. It was already pretty late
- 21:57Speaker 3: and I was really getting like kind of tired.
- 22:02Speaker 4: So you're a phil I'm pretty sure then that he
- 22:05Speaker 4: had drugged your drink.
- 22:07Speaker 3: Pretty sure. I can never prove it. I mean I
- 22:11Speaker 3: never felt like this. It was this fog, this strange fog.
- 22:18Speaker 5: She says.
- 22:18Speaker 8: Winner then offered to take her out for food.
- 22:21Speaker 3: And I'm like, no, I don't think so He's like,
- 22:24Speaker 3: come on, I know your neighbor. You go to my
- 22:27Speaker 3: tanning flon.
- 22:29Speaker 8: She agrees to go, and then says Mark Winner pulls
- 22:33Speaker 8: the car up to a stop, not at a restaurant,
- 22:36Speaker 8: but at his tanning salon.
- 22:39Speaker 3: I'm like, where are we? He has me walk in first.
- 22:42Speaker 3: He's behind me, and so my back's to him, and
- 22:45Speaker 3: I hear the turn of the lock.
- 22:47Speaker 4: So he's locked you in with him.
- 22:50Speaker 3: And at that moment, my whole body cringed. I mean
- 22:54Speaker 3: everything in me just went, it just stopped I lose
- 22:59Speaker 3: time again, and when I woke up, I'm standing inside
- 23:03Speaker 3: one of the tanning rooms and I turn around and
- 23:08Speaker 3: I see him, and he's standing in the doorway, blocking
- 23:11Speaker 3: my way out.
- 23:13Speaker 8: Leslie says she tried to force her way past him,
- 23:16Speaker 8: but that's when Mark Winner made his move.
- 23:19Speaker 3: And he lifted me up and slammed me down on
- 23:22Speaker 3: the tanning bed and he's strangling me.
- 23:26Speaker 4: What was going through your mind when he grabbed your neck?
- 23:29Speaker 3: And I'm thinking, this isn't happening, This can't be happening.
- 23:33Speaker 3: He's going to kill me. I'm certain of it. He's
- 23:35Speaker 3: gonna kill me, and he just squeezes tighter and tighter
- 23:39Speaker 3: around my neck. I wanted to live. I wanted to live.
- 23:44Speaker 3: I somehow gurgled out, you stop stop, I'll stop fighting,
- 23:53Speaker 3: and then he got back on me and he raped me.
- 24:01Speaker 3: I just no longer existed in that moment. I was gone.
- 24:06Speaker 8: Next, Leslie Barton faces the gut wrenching decision speak out
- 24:14Speaker 8: or stay silent.
- 24:15Speaker 3: In my identity, my self worth? It was just taken
- 24:21Speaker 3: an instant.
- 24:22Speaker 8: Mark Winner and Elizabeth goes on the hunt for Mark Winner.
- 24:30Speaker 1: We're back with more on the case of the tanning
- 24:32Speaker 1: salon owner accused of sexually assaulting employees and customers. To
- 24:36Speaker 1: the horror of those alleged victims, that suspect remains out
- 24:39Speaker 1: on the streets while he awaits trial. Let's head back
- 24:42Speaker 1: to Chicago, where our Elizabeth Smart tried to get his
- 24:45Speaker 1: side of the story.
- 24:49Speaker 8: It's the morning after the most terrific night of Leslie
- 24:52Speaker 8: Barton's life.
- 24:54Speaker 3: I had no idea why. It was so absolutely terrified
- 24:57Speaker 3: of everything. I just severe post man extrass And.
- 25:01Speaker 8: She's sharing her nightmare of being raped for the first
- 25:05Speaker 8: time on national television with our Elizabeth Smart.
- 25:09Speaker 3: What happened after the attack, I couldn't sparely speak, and
- 25:13Speaker 3: my neck is killing me.
- 25:16Speaker 8: Her physical scars pale compared to the emotional trauma.
- 25:20Speaker 3: And look in the mirror and then there's like fingerprints
- 25:24Speaker 3: of bruises all around my neck everywhere. When the shadow
- 25:28Speaker 3: would go past the window, I jump. And then the
- 25:32Speaker 3: next day I said to my friend, I said, many flashbacks.
- 25:37Speaker 3: I'm starting to get my memory back. I said, I
- 25:40Speaker 3: think I was ripped.
- 25:43Speaker 8: Leslie claims she was raped on a tanning bed in
- 25:46Speaker 8: a tanning salon and says, this is the man who
- 25:49Speaker 8: attacked her Mark Winner. Crime Watch Daily has learned Winter
- 25:53Speaker 8: once managed and later owned the salon. Leslie shares with
- 25:58Speaker 8: Elizabeth the tortures so many rape victims endure to tell
- 26:03Speaker 8: or to keep quiet.
- 26:05Speaker 3: If I tell anybody, I'll never work in my profession again.
- 26:09Speaker 3: I knew where this could go. But then also the
- 26:12Speaker 3: thought of if I don't tell someone, he's gonna do
- 26:16Speaker 3: this to someone else.
- 26:18Speaker 4: Not only that, but it would destroy you from the
- 26:21Speaker 4: inside out.
- 26:22Speaker 3: Yes, it would.
- 26:24Speaker 4: As a rape survivor myself, I will never forget the
- 26:29Speaker 4: feelings of filth and just total loss of value in myself.
- 26:35Speaker 4: The feeling of filth is so overwhelming. And six days
- 26:43Speaker 4: was how long you waited before you reported to the police.
- 26:46Speaker 4: That's not long at all.
- 26:49Speaker 3: Still, even then it was a little shaky. I actually,
- 26:51Speaker 3: male friend of mine called the police and they called me,
- 26:54Speaker 3: and then I went in.
- 26:56Speaker 8: To Leslie's great relief. Police head over to the Tan
- 27:00Speaker 8: salon and Mark Winner is arrested on suspicion of criminal
- 27:04Speaker 8: sexual assault. But Leslie gets a shocked a few days
- 27:07Speaker 8: later when she sits down for a talk with the
- 27:10Speaker 8: felony reviewer on the case.
- 27:12Speaker 3: He asked me, why didn't you run to the nearest house.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Why didn't you break open the door? Why didn't you
- 27:19Speaker 3: do this? Why didn't you do that? So the felony
- 27:22Speaker 3: reviewer who decided he would not charge him with criminal
- 27:25Speaker 3: sexual assault.
- 27:26Speaker 4: How did you feel when you found out he was
- 27:28Speaker 4: just being charged with battery?
- 27:31Speaker 7: Enraged?
- 27:33Speaker 3: To be honest, the justice system failed me so miserably.
- 27:41Speaker 8: A disappointed Leslie is present for every hearing. When Winner
- 27:45Speaker 8: appears before a judge, he.
- 27:47Speaker 3: Would yell at me as he walked out of the
- 27:50Speaker 3: cart room. She's a liar and he had absolutely zero remorse.
- 27:56Speaker 9: What was it like seeing him again?
- 27:59Speaker 3: I was grateful to have my mom by my side
- 28:03Speaker 3: the whole time. She was just terrified of how her
- 28:05Speaker 3: daughter was going to get hurt, but she was there
- 28:09Speaker 3: every moment by my side.
- 28:12Speaker 8: Then the shocking news mark Winner will get probation and
- 28:16Speaker 8: not serve another day behind bars. That makes Leslie feel
- 28:20Speaker 8: violated all over again.
- 28:22Speaker 3: They come to me and tell me that they want
- 28:24Speaker 3: to only go for two years probation and he's willing
- 28:29Speaker 3: to plead guilty on my wait two years. She gets
- 28:34Speaker 3: his freedom entirely. And the craziest part about it, though,
- 28:37Speaker 3: is at the end when he left, angry in rage
- 28:42Speaker 3: that he had put you know, they pleaded guilty to
- 28:44Speaker 3: bout her a.
- 28:46Speaker 8: Leslie is crushed, telling Elizabeth she's terrified he'll go on
- 28:50Speaker 8: to rape other women. Now at least four other women
- 28:53Speaker 8: are claiming Winner did the same thing to them after
- 28:56Speaker 8: walking free.
- 28:58Speaker 3: I couldn't stop him. Even though granded the system failed me,
- 29:02Speaker 3: I still couldn't stop him. And since I couldn't stop him,
- 29:07Speaker 3: these other women, unfortunately are right.
- 29:11Speaker 8: Mark Winner's criminal record reportedly includes convictions for duy, driving
- 29:16Speaker 8: with a revoked license, theft, and possession of cocaine. One
- 29:21Speaker 8: witness reportedly told investigators that he and Winter would cruise
- 29:26Speaker 8: the streets late nights looking for intoxicated women and lure
- 29:30Speaker 8: them into the car with quote free tans, drugs and alcohol.
- 29:35Speaker 3: Mark Winner and the Mark Winners out there. They get
- 29:38Speaker 3: emboldened when they get off with a slap on the wrist, basically,
- 29:45Speaker 3: oh yeah, I can go out and do that again.
- 29:49Speaker 8: His current charges of four violent sexual assaults ranged between
- 29:53Speaker 8: two thousand and nine and twenty fifteen, and that includes
- 29:57Speaker 8: the kidnapping of one woman he allegedly brought to his
- 30:00Speaker 8: mother's home and raped at Nice point, and now Leslie
- 30:06Speaker 8: says insult is again added to injury to see Mark
- 30:09Speaker 8: Winner walk free again after posting bond on his four
- 30:13Speaker 8: pending rape charges.
- 30:15Speaker 3: He changed my life forever, But you know, I hate
- 30:24Speaker 3: saying that because that means he still has control and
- 30:26Speaker 3: power over me, and he doesn't.
- 30:29Speaker 4: Brian Mitchell changed my life forever, but that doesn't mean
- 30:32Speaker 4: he has power controlling exactly.
- 30:36Speaker 8: Elizabeth decided to track down Mark Winner at his Chicago home.
- 30:43Speaker 3: Hello, Hello, Mark, Mark Winner.
- 30:47Speaker 1: Nobody answered.
- 30:48Speaker 13: This is his gate right here, and it's locked up
- 30:50Speaker 13: pretty tight, and you can see right here. He's got
- 30:53Speaker 13: a security camp. So if he's at home, then he
- 30:56Speaker 13: can probably see us, and he doesn't want to talk
- 30:58Speaker 13: to us. And this is also his garage right here
- 31:01Speaker 13: that we've been watching all morning and we haven't.
- 31:02Speaker 6: Seen him leave the house Mark Mark Winner.
- 31:07Speaker 3: I'm Elizabeth.
- 31:08Speaker 6: I'm here with Crime Watch. I'd like to ask you
- 31:09Speaker 6: a few questions.
- 31:11Speaker 8: He may be free, but he's keeping a very low
- 31:14Speaker 8: profile these days. We figure the last person he wants
- 31:18Speaker 8: to see is our Elizabeth Smart.
- 31:22Speaker 13: So we still think he is inside, just not willing
- 31:24Speaker 13: to speak to us.
- 31:25Speaker 8: Winner's attorneys send Crime Watch Daily this statement. We prefer
- 31:29Speaker 8: to try these cases in the courtroom at that time.
- 31:32Speaker 8: We believe people will see these charges are without merit.
- 31:38Speaker 8: We did get a good look at Winner the day
- 31:40Speaker 8: he posted bond to get out of jail. He wears
- 31:43Speaker 8: an ankle monitor and is under a seven pm curfew,
- 31:47Speaker 8: but he was too busy running away to answer any questions.
- 31:53Speaker 8: But count on it he will return soon to the
- 31:56Speaker 8: halls of justice to answer some deadly serious questions before
- 32:00Speaker 8: a judge.
- 32:01Speaker 4: So I'm so grateful that you are sharing your story.
- 32:04Speaker 4: Do you find it at all cathartic or do you
- 32:06Speaker 4: just feel it's just kind of hard and kind of painful.
- 32:10Speaker 3: And not only on camera. I'm saying my name, I'm
- 32:14Speaker 3: saying his name. I'm letting my face be seen. I'm
- 32:18Speaker 3: not letting my voice be distorted. Because the reality is
- 32:22Speaker 3: is that we shouldn't have to hide.
- 32:25Speaker 5: They should
