Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Simon Marks: FSN Correspondent on the report that Former Democrat Robert F Kennedy Jr. will endorse Donald Trump
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Karmala Harris will formally accept the Democratic nomination for president today.
- 0:04Speaker 1: This is at the DNC in Chicago. It comes as
- 0:07Speaker 1: Robert F. Kennedy, who's that independent third candidate, is expected
- 0:11Speaker 1: to drop out of the race today and endorse Donald Trump.
- 0:15Speaker 1: Simon marx Is if it sends correspondent at the DNC
- 0:18Speaker 1: in Chicago. Simon, thanks for being with us this morning.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Great to have you back on the show.
- 0:24Speaker 2: Good to be back, Ryan Simon.
- 0:26Speaker 1: It's start with the DNC. What are we expecting from
- 0:29Speaker 1: Karmala today?
- 0:32Speaker 2: Well, I think, you know, the most important political speech
- 0:35Speaker 2: of her life. I mean, that's often a cliche, but
- 0:37Speaker 2: it certainly isn't on this occasion. Kamala Harris has to
- 0:41Speaker 2: capitalize on the incredible sense of electricity and desire in
- 0:48Speaker 2: the room for this convention to end on a high.
- 0:52Speaker 2: It has moved from the Obamas speaking a couple of
- 0:55Speaker 2: nights ago to her running mate Tim Walls captivating the
- 0:59Speaker 2: audience last night with that speech that very much portrayed
- 1:03Speaker 2: himself as a high school football coach who was now
- 1:06Speaker 2: coaching Democrats in preparing for the fourth quarter of the game.
- 1:11Speaker 2: He wanted them to go out and fight for every
- 1:13Speaker 2: single inch and every single yard. And so now it's
- 1:16Speaker 2: Kamala Harris's turn to introduce herself in detail to those
- 1:20Speaker 2: Americans who have not followed her career even as vice
- 1:24Speaker 2: president with a tremendous degree of regularity, but also to
- 1:30Speaker 2: inspire Democrats to get out and work, as Barack Obama
- 1:34Speaker 2: put it, like they've never worked before, in order to
- 1:37Speaker 2: try and eke out a win over Donald Trump. I
- 1:40Speaker 2: think this is going to be a speech that is
- 1:43Speaker 2: very big on large inspirational promises and perhaps not quite
- 1:50Speaker 2: as thick in terms of policy prescriptions. This convention really
- 1:56Speaker 2: has been all about one central theme and to average
- 2:03Speaker 2: Americans than Donald Trump and JD Events, and so far
- 2:07Speaker 2: in that regard it's worked.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Robert F. Kennedy expected to pull out of the race
- 2:12Speaker 1: today and endorse Trump. Does that change the result? Do
- 2:16Speaker 1: you think?
- 2:17Speaker 2: Well, it has the potential to have an impact. There's
- 2:19Speaker 2: no question about that. I mean, it's often been debated
- 2:22Speaker 2: ever since Robert F. Kennedy got into this race, first
- 2:26Speaker 2: as a Democrat, of course, challenging Joe Biden, then deciding
- 2:29Speaker 2: he was getting nowhere in that regard and so he
- 2:32Speaker 2: became an independent. It's often been debated where the most
- 2:36Speaker 2: of his supporters, and he's getting you know, between eight
- 2:39Speaker 2: and ten percent in the polls, are likely Trump voters
- 2:43Speaker 2: or likely Biden voters. Now, I think most analysts think
- 2:47Speaker 2: that given some of Robert F. Kennedy's positions, he draws
- 2:50Speaker 2: more support away from Donald Trump than he does from
- 2:53Speaker 2: Joe Biden. So an endorsement of Donald Trump will certainly
- 2:57Speaker 2: help him at a time when Kamala Hara is hoping
- 3:00Speaker 2: to leave Chicago with a huge bounce in the opinion
- 3:03Speaker 2: polls that she can then try to maintain and perhaps
- 3:06Speaker 2: even extend. It's something that Donald Fum desperately needs at
- 3:11Speaker 2: the end of a week that obviously has been all
- 3:14Speaker 2: about Kamala Harris because that's the nature of a convention
- 3:17Speaker 2: that is a four day made for TV spectacular. Whether
- 3:22Speaker 2: it appreciably changes the outcome of this election is just
- 3:25Speaker 2: too early to know. You know, this is still a
- 3:27Speaker 2: fifty to fifty country, so it could make a big difference.
- 3:31Speaker 2: But we need to factor in what kind of impact
- 3:33Speaker 2: Kamala Harrison, Tim Wa Walls have had this week here,
- 3:36Speaker 2: and we still don't know that because obviously the convention
- 3:39Speaker 2: is still underway.
- 3:40Speaker 1: Yeah, and we'll hear from Kamala Harris today, Simon, thank
- 3:42Speaker 1: you for that, Simon Marx. If it's in correspondent at
- 3:44Speaker 1: the DNC in a Chicago for us for more from
- 3:49Speaker 1: news Talks, it'd be listen live on air or online.
