- 1:00Rick, good to have you back.
- 1:01Great to see you, my friend.
- 1:02It's been a while. I'm glad to be here.
- 1:04And by the way, you're here
- 1:05on a really interesting and auspicious day for the bond markets
- 1:09as we're sitting here.
- 1:10The 30-year Treasury yield is at 19 year highs.
- 1:142007 was the last time we saw these
- 1:18levels of 5.32, 5.31
- 1:20Just before we get started,
- 1:21because this will probably lead us into the rest of our chat.
- 1:24What do you attribute this extreme rise in yields
- 1:28in the long end of the curve?
- 1:29So I it be better off like the people,
- 1:31the equity people get to come in and say it's all time
- 1:33highs and record highs
- 1:33like it's like the cheapest time in the bond market.
- 1:35So let's say I know a couple things that have been,
- 1:38that have been happening.
- 1:39And I, you know, listen,
- 1:40I think there are a bunch of
- 1:41people
- 1:42who put stories to what's happening
- 1:44that I don't think are 100% true.
- 1:46One, I actually think if you think about when the fed met last,
- 1:49employment has actually been sluggish.
- 1:51Inflation has actually moderated.
- 1:54So I don't really think this is
- 1:55gosh, Fed's going to be hiking hiking dynamic at play.
- 2:00I do think there's something that is significant though.
- 2:02And that is the the fact the amount of financing that's coming to
- 2:06the market is pretty impressive.
- 2:07So you've got Treasury issuance, you've got a fiscal dynamic
- 2:10that's quite real, and then you've got this immense amount of
- 2:14AI data center supply that's coming on the market all at once.
- 2:18And by the way, when rates move higher
- 2:19you get mortgage rate extension.
- 2:21And so all those things
- 2:22have led to just more supply to the market.
- 2:24So I think it's a supply demand dynamic.
- 2:26We also historically
- 2:28you had much greater contribution from other parts of the world
- 2:31who were buying our treasuries, China, Japan, Brazil,
- 2:35other parts of the world.
- 2:36And quite frankly,
- 2:36they're funding their own domestic and and and or buying gold.
- 2:40And so you have you don't have the buyer base isn't as extensive.
- 2:43People have pulled back saying,
- 2:45gosh, I'm going to wait a little bit.
- 2:47Treasuries don't do for me
- 2:48what they used to do for me in terms of,
- 2:49gosh, they're a great hedge against equities.
- 2:51Particular
- 2:52if inflation's higher means equities
- 2:53get hurt the same time that bonds do.
- 2:54So listen I think it's primarily a supply.
- 2:58But I listen
- 2:59I think people have also gotten a sense
- 3:00for gosh long and interest rates.
- 3:02What do how do they fit my portfolio today.
- 3:05And you don't have the buyer base you had before.
- 3:07It's interesting because, you know,
- 3:08we're obviously talking a lot about artificial intelligence,
- 3:10and I want to get into that with you in a little bit
- 3:12on the debt issuance side, because corporate debt,
- 3:15it's really getting fueled a lot by what's going on AI side.
- 3:18But I want to keep with the rates,
- 3:20you know,
- 3:20because we just as you mentioned,
- 3:21Warsh had a meeting a couple of weeks ago.
- 3:23He talked about periods of watchful thinking.
- 3:26When they talk about why are you going to raise rates now?
- 3:28The market thinks he's
- 3:29they're going to raise rates for the end of the year.
- 3:30CIO here at UBS doesn't think that's going to happen.
- 3:34They expect probably two cuts next year.
- 3:36What are your thoughts on
- 3:37that when you tie it into jobs inflation,
- 3:40all the things that contribute to
- 3:42what the fed has to think
- 3:44about every time they go into a meeting.
- 3:46And I by the by the way,
- 3:47not a lot of people believe exactly like you described.
- 3:49I think the same. Yeah, I think it's crazy.
- 3:51I mean, I think hiking rates when you're looking at, by the way,
- 3:53if you take
- 3:54I think we brought a chart to show the where inflation is going.
- 3:57If you take the three month moving average of core CPI,
- 4:00we're running at 1.6%. Yep.
- 4:02The six month moving average is 2.4 core goods inflation,
- 4:06where I would argue
- 4:07the interest rate is the most influential on core goods
- 4:10inflation is running literally at zero.
- 4:12You have service level inflation,
- 4:14but even service level inflation is not running that high.
- 4:16So I mean look at this chart.
- 4:17Say gosh the fed is going to hike into this.
- 4:19It doesn't make a lot of sense to me.
- 4:20And plus, you know, when the employment world
- 4:23we've hired the length of three months, we've hired 20,000 jobs.
- 4:27If you strip out health care, it's a negative. Right.
- 4:28And if you go back six months, the same dynamic,
- 4:31meaning I don't think the fed should be hiking.
- 4:32I agree, I think the next move is going to be a cut.
- 4:34Like you say, markets are anticipating a hike.
- 4:38You have a hawkish committee.
- 4:40I will say one thing about it.
- 4:41I think, you know, I get asked all the time fed credibility.
- 4:44Also, I think they need to give the new chairman a chance.
- 4:47I think he's got these sass forces.
- 4:49I think he's going to lay out what are those task force?
- 4:51These are complex issues.
- 4:53Is policy restrictive?
- 4:54I don't know, housing seven a tough time.
- 4:56AI is going to keep spending.
- 4:59And by the way,
- 4:59what is the most effective tool is the interest rate
- 5:01or is it liquidity or is it a balance sheet? Is regulation.
- 5:04So I think he's going to work through a bunch of these issues.
- 5:06The one thing that I think will be critical
- 5:08going forward, I think Jackson Hole could be an important moment.
- 5:12Yeah, that's coming up really soon. Yeah.
- 5:13And I think that will be at the end of this month.
- 5:15I think that will be what are the metrics you're looking at?
- 5:18What are the tools
- 5:19you're using to analyze inflation,
- 5:21analyze these complex subjects.
- 5:23And I think if he can give a little bit more clarity
- 5:27on the metrics,
- 5:28which by the way, doesn't mean forward
- 5:29guidance, people are freaked out.
- 5:30We're going to go less forward guidance.
- 5:32Actually I think that's a great thing.
- 5:34I think the markets have become too married to, quite frankly,
- 5:37the dot plot where forward guidance has been wrong.
- 5:40Think about transitory.
- 5:41You think about you know, you think about economic projections.
- 5:44The fed hasn't been right.
- 5:45I don't think we need as much forward guidance.
- 5:47Markets just need give me the metrics.
- 5:49Give me the tools that you're going to utilize to assess the,
- 5:53what you're thinking about in terms of inflation employment.
- 5:56And I think Jackson Hole could be a time to that.
- 5:58And if you got more clarity around it, you could see rates
- 6:01start to stabilize and rate volatility
- 6:03come down, which is also important.
- 6:04And maybe the markets will start pricing in a cut.
- 6:07Oh in 2027
- 6:08I mean there's only so much
- 6:09they can anticipate
- 6:10that they're going to hike before the end of the year.
- 6:12And given that also I mean look at
- 6:13I mean there's
- 6:14something like $8 trillion of cash and money market
- 6:17right on the sidelines globally.
- 6:19So people are missing out on this opportunity to look at I mean,
- 6:22if you want duration, you've got it 5.3% on a 30 year Treasury
- 6:26or 20 years, or just like,
- 6:27I think a like one basis point below that, even the German Bund,
- 6:31yeah, is at high levels since we haven't seen since 2011.
- 6:34So which where would you be putting some of that money to work?
- 6:38So I think today I still think we'd be a bit careful
- 6:40about long end interest rates.
- 6:42And I think, you know,
- 6:42we've kept our interest rate exposure to a pretty nominal level.
- 6:46Income really work.
- 6:47So I didn't
- 6:47I think when you go back and you say, you know,
- 6:49I think two years from now, three years from now,
- 6:50people are going to say, "Wow,
- 6:52I got to buy assets like we run an ETF called, Bink."
- 6:55We're running close to 7% yield on the portfolio
- 6:58with less than three years of interest rate exposure
- 7:00and an A-minus rating.
- 7:02I've spent most of my career longing to do something like that.
- 7:05Creating income.
- 7:06You don't have to take as much interest rate exposure.
- 7:08I think to me, that's that's what you got to do.
- 7:10And by the way, Europe is super.
- 7:12To your point about bonds, Europe is super attractive.
- 7:15You think about we had years of negative interest rates
- 7:17now as a dollar investor you get the cross currency benefit.
- 7:21You know we buy I hold the largest percentage
- 7:23of European fixed income that I've ever there have ever owned.
- 7:27And by the way, emerging markets are if you don't think
- 7:30the dollars in appreciate significantly,
- 7:31which I think is a fair assessment.
- 7:33Yeah. Make some sense.
- 7:34So you know my view today
- 7:36diversify diversify diversify fixed income
- 7:38equities are different.
- 7:40Focus concentrate I these stocks are going to continue to do
- 7:43well in fixed income.
- 7:45I'm trying to be as boring as humanly possible.
- 7:48And diversifying.
- 7:49Just keep the thing stable with a lot of yield
- 7:51so people can sleep at night.
- 7:52It's funny most of the time
- 7:53and our
- 7:53and most of my career,
- 7:54maybe yours fixed income was kind of a boring asset class.
- 7:57It was stable and stable,
- 7:58and it's actually really exciting these days
- 8:00given everything that's going on.
- 8:01But and that takes us to the AI side of the story,
- 8:04it almost feels like the bond market,
- 8:06especially on the corporate bond side,
- 8:07is having a little bit of a renaissance
- 8:09because there's so much potential debt
- 8:12that's being issued from a lot of these AI companies.
- 8:15On the corporate bond
- 8:15side,
- 8:16it's giving investors a real opportunity to kind of get in here.
- 8:19Do you think that that's
- 8:20where
- 8:21we should be thinking about as far as like long term planning?
- 8:25So I've historically always been a believer in technology.
- 8:29You should own in an equity.
- 8:30Yeah. Like bonds we should be a little more safe.
- 8:33And you know utilities telecom on cetera.
- 8:36Industrials today I think you have to reassess
- 8:40your model
- 8:41a little bit and say gosh
- 8:42maybe I will finance some of these companies.
- 8:44You know, some of the data center financing that's coming.
- 8:47That's two,
- 8:47three, four year debt that's get you some really nice yields.
- 8:50What I pick away at some of that for sure.
- 8:53Some of the,
- 8:54you know, some of the hyperscaler issuance out the curve.
- 8:57The yields are pretty high today.
- 8:59That being said,
- 9:00I don't think there is
- 9:00any race because they're going to keep coming to the market.
- 9:03So I think today I still think I equities
- 9:06technology equities I think you're upside is is tremendous.
- 9:10What I start picking away at some of particularly
- 9:11some of the shorter dated a data center debt I think so.
- 9:15And then listen I, I think it's own part of your portfolio
- 9:19in some of the hyperscalers maybe maybe a bit of it.
- 9:22I just don't find like we got to race into long duration
- 9:26technology debt.
- 9:27I just don't think there is an emergency that we get in there.
- 9:29There's plenty of ways
- 9:30to get yield in the portfolio,
- 9:32and I'd be a little bit more careful today on that side.
- 9:34Is there a risk that that, you know, spreads need to kind of a
- 9:37just a little more widely at this point?
- 9:40Listen, I think there's a lot of I mean, I've, I quite frankly,
- 9:43I've seen industrial, I've seen how many different cycles
- 9:46and you see industrial development,
- 9:48you see like the telecom issuance that was sizable.
- 9:50This is really big.
- 9:52This is really big.
- 9:53And I think part of,
- 9:54you know, whether you talk to people
- 9:55in administration or otherwise,
- 9:56like why are these rates doing this?
- 9:58Like we got to reprice real rates
- 10:00to the point where we're going to finance a lot of it.
- 10:02And there's something that it's not just the amount
- 10:05and there's is something that's really different there.
- 10:07The IRR, the returns on their investments.
- 10:10Yeah.
- 10:10That 2550 basis points doesn't really make a hill of beans
- 10:13of their weighted average cost of capital.
- 10:15So as long as their IRR is are so high
- 10:18they can issue a cheaper levels and so on.
- 10:20The you know
- 10:20from the bond side over in the investor side you say okay,
- 10:23maybe I'll be a little bit careful about it
- 10:25because it's not only going to come,
- 10:26but it's going to come at levels that they just need size.
- 10:29Right.
- 10:29And they're willing to price in of that size.
- 10:31And it potentially everybody wins in that scenario.
- 10:33Correct? Yeah. Correct.
- 10:34You just as an investor,
- 10:36you just got to wait for the deals that make a lot of sense
- 10:38that have already priced in like, wow, that's a lot of yield.
- 10:41I've already factored in the supply that's going to keep coming.
- 10:43What do you.
- 10:43Think about the intermediate part of the curve right now
- 10:45that, you know twos five especially the five year
- 10:47we like it here.
- 10:48I mean the CIO really likes that five year.
- 10:50It's about 4.39 right now,
- 10:52which is an unbelievably good yield for 5-year.
- 10:54Where do your thoughts on that given you know,
- 10:56I mean five years intermediate.
- 10:57That belly is not much of a belly now.
- 11:00But yeah, I hate to be that agreeable, but
- 11:02that's my favorite part of the curve. Yeah.
- 11:04By the way the very front it carries a well in a portfolio,
- 11:08the very front.
- 11:09You know, it's pretty hard to fight
- 11:10now where you're pricing the fed giving.
- 11:12You got a hawkish committee.
- 11:14But the belly if you think about where forwards are going to go
- 11:17and you can actually get some real price return
- 11:19if they do flip, which
- 11:20I think they will to an easing posture,
- 11:22you can actually make some money in the belly of the curve.
- 11:24I like I don't like it, I like the belly.
- 11:26I like owning the belly of the curve
- 11:28and then owning some yielding assets spread to that.
- 11:30Sure.
- 11:31And that to me, by the way, you run your break-evens of owning
- 11:34that you'd need rates literally if you're owning spread assets
- 11:37would be assumed.
- 11:38Default cycle is
- 11:39is reasonably low, which I think is right away from loan.
- 11:41Some parts of the loan market
- 11:43before your break even, you need rates to go up 75 to 80, 85 basis
- 11:46points to be down on those trades.
- 11:48I don't think we're going there.
- 11:50So the break even relative to cash I've been in
- 11:52that belly is pretty, pretty attractive today.
- 11:54And a well-diversified portfolio of equities.
- 11:57Some it's got some like
- 11:58little bit of commodities in there and the fixed income.
- 12:00You know.
- 12:02Great way to think about especially right now in this market
- 12:04I can't let you go
- 12:05because one of the one time I did
- 12:06have you in the studio
- 12:07and I forgot to ask you a question
- 12:09about what
- 12:09your latest
- 12:10and greatest technological sort of aficionados
- 12:13brain is thinking of.
- 12:14I'm going to ask you,
- 12:14what's the latest and greatest tech
- 12:16that you're geeking out these days?
- 12:18I mean, I,
- 12:18I mean,
- 12:19so first of all, like things like robotics,
- 12:21I need to have my own robot.
- 12:23In the House.
- 12:23Yes, I do, although I got to figure out the one that's not,
- 12:26you know, fully, you know, listening and everything in my life.
- 12:30But anyway, I gotta figure that.
- 12:31I gotta figure that one out, right?
- 12:32I by the way, I'll say the two things that are really cool.
- 12:34First of all, full self-driving.
- 12:36And this is part of why I'm a little wigged out
- 12:37about employment in this country, etc..
- 12:39The full self-driving cars are crazy, you know,
- 12:42like you literally don't even have to pay attention.
- 12:44Like they are literally. I mean, I'm not advising that.
- 12:47But anyway,
- 12:48they're pretty incredible in terms of, that that blows
- 12:50me, blows me away now and then, the one that I think
- 12:55that I'm getting into now, I
- 12:56don't think the technology's there yet,
- 12:58but I think we're not more than a few months away
- 13:00is I think the glasses and I know Meta's talked about it.
- 13:03Google talked about it.
- 13:05Apple has gone down the road
- 13:06and I think maybe stopped and started around but boy,
- 13:09I think
- 13:10I think, you know, when you think about what mobile telephony is
- 13:14and, and the adjacency around glasses
- 13:17and things that can happen around glasses, some of it's
- 13:20virtual reality that is, that's pretty extraordinary, right?
- 13:23Yeah. Somebody told me the story.
- 13:24You could at
- 13:25some point
- 13:25were going to be sitting at dinner,
- 13:27and you'll have people sitting at the table
- 13:28that actually won't be there,
- 13:29because you'll see them on your glasses,
- 13:31which I've said, I don't think the restaurant's
- 13:32going to love that, but only one person's eating.
- 13:35But, anyway, I think glasses is going to be,
- 13:38you know, optics, generally optical generally.
- 13:40I think it's going to be a pretty powerful dynamic.
- 13:42It's funny you out my my producer
- 13:44Kyle is in my ear saying,
- 13:45you know, it's almost like every time
- 13:46you watch a Black Mirror episode, you can almost anticipate that.
- 13:49We'll see that device in our own lives
- 13:51in the next 10 or 20 years, maybe the last two years.
- 13:54It's exponentially.
- 13:55Yeah. That's what that's.
- 13:57What makes it so cool today. Yeah.
- 13:58And you can invest around some of these. Exactly.
- 14:00We love,
- 14:01the AI investing here are transformational opportunities.
- 14:05Very cool.
