- 3:38Right after this show, After Hours has a fantastic program set up for
- 3:43us tonight. Okay, so let's get to the show, shall we.
- 3:47All right, Well, tonight we're exploring the devilish monster of Christmas Crampus.
- 3:55Every year, in early December, children in Austria get ready for Saint Nicholas
- 4:00to visit them and if they've been good, they get rewarded with presents,
- 4:04toys, candy, treats things like that. But if they've been bad,
- 4:09they get way more than just slumpical. They get a visit from Crampis.
- 4:13Okay, crampis the half man, half goat who chases not ey children around
- 4:18and potentially drags them to hell. Oh my god, what a horrible,
- 4:25horrible thing to have to worry about when you're a kid. Okay, if
- 4:28we don't have enough problems in this world, okay, So to help me
- 4:31discuss this tonight, I have Dennis Carrol here. Dennis is a well known
- 4:36authority on folklore, legends, superstitions, cryptozoology, and the occult. He's
- 4:42a supernaturalist and paranormal consultant who's advised people throughout the world. Dennis is a

- 4:58and a speaker who performs lecturers and presentations on culture, folklore, myths and
- 5:03legends. You can find Dennis on his YouTube channel Hunting the Shadows Please Help
- 5:10Me. Welcome to Space Out Radio Tonight. For this very Merry Christmas Crampus
- 5:14special. Dennis Carol, good evening. Hey Dennis, it's a dark,
- 5:20foggy night at that's a perfect night for our subject. It is. I
- 5:26can't wait to talk about Crampis. I don't think I've ever ever talked about
- 5:30Crampus on the show before, not in depth. So this is gonna be
- 5:32a lot of fun tonight. Oh he is a bad guy, and we're
- 5:36warning you kids now you better straighten up because Crampus is come look at you
- 5:42definitely. And we're kind of safe though, Jess, because Crampis is not
- 5:47is December fifth. Okay, we made it through that. But here's the
- 5:53interesting thing. That's his night when he's supposed to appear. Well, the
- 5:56interesting thing about Crampus is he can show up anytime between then and Christmas if
- 6:00he makes a special trip for someone. Okay, so you're not in the
- 6:04clear completely if you're if you're not careful with this guy. Oh man,
- 6:11I tell you what, Like if I if I had known about Crampis when
- 6:14I was a kid, I would have been on the street and narrow all
- 6:17year because I would have been so worried that Crampus was going to crawl off
- 6:21from under my bed and grab my feet and take me. Yeah, yeah,
- 6:27let's see. Uh. One thing I think about the crampis, you
- 6:30know, is he's kind of an invention to to kind of keep the kids
- 6:33in line, you know, if you don't get out of line, and
- 6:36you'd rather watch out with this guy. But he's also the personification of a
- 6:41complete opposite of Santa Claus, the good, saintly guy that does good bees
- 6:46and loves children. This guy is the complete opposite of old Saint Nick.
- 6:53And that's what makes him so very interesting. Uh, you have another sort
- 6:59of a reverse s mirror image thing going on here, And and the fact
- 7:02that here's here's another thing about the Crampus which makes him even more scarier.
- 7:09He carries a bundle of switches to whip you with if you've been bad,
- 7:14But it doesn't stop there. If you've really been really really bad and you
- 7:18like don't go to church and you don't do what you're supposed to do,
- 7:21and you don't do your household chores and all that, he puts you in
- 7:26the basket on his back, takes you to hell and then to eats you
- 7:30alive. Oh and it's not it's just children. It's not really the adults,
- 7:36right, well, it can be adults. Adults have been supposedly victims
- 7:43of Crampis as well. And if you look at some of these old cars,
- 7:46Crampis is a very very prevalent thing in East in Germany and Finland,
- 7:55Norway, places like that and sort of the northern climbs of Europe. Uh
- 8:01He's very prevalent there. But you know, the Crampis or something very similar
- 8:05to him, it was all the way to Spain. Uh So it's very
- 8:11prevalent, and it wasn't very well known here in this country until just a
- 8:15few years back that you know, people are talking about the Grampis, but
- 8:18he was very well known, especially in Germany and places like that. The
- 8:26complete opposite of Father Christmas. Oh yeah, I'll say, I'll say,
- 8:31because it goes from Saint Nicholas to a demon. I mean, whoa,
- 8:37that's the one in the yang, right I can. I'm going to be
- 8:43doing the show pretty show on my podcast about Santa Claus, the very many
- 8:46Santa signings. And here's what I say about Santa He was the first original
- 8:52superhero. Okay, and then if you look at it, the other way,
- 8:56Crampis is the very first super Okay, that's the way that goes.
- 9:05Oh wow, without that, how far back does Crampis go, Dennis,
- 9:09Do you know around the time that people started acknowledging Crampis medieval times? Definitely,
- 9:18it definitely goes back in day. He's been around as long as the
- 9:22legend of Santa Claus. Definitely, without a doubt. Like I said,
- 9:26he's the opposite of it. He goes and he sort of works. Here's
- 9:30the weird thing about it, Jessic, because he kind of works in conjunction
- 9:33with Santa Claus. You know, Santa is doing the good stuff and then
- 9:37the good kids. He's getting the bad kids and all that. So they
- 9:41they're sort of an uneasy alliance between them. It's very interesting in that respect.
- 9:50They say, yeah, that he didn't really work for Santa Claus,
- 9:54but like I said, they had an agreement. You might say, you
- 9:58take care of the good kids, and I don't think here the bad kids
- 10:01kind of thing. It sounds like the typical good cop bad cop. S
- 10:07Yeah, he's the demonic BD cop. Yeah right, Well, but Crampis
- 10:16if you look at him, if you look at his representation, I mean,
- 10:18this guy is a demon. Okay, that's what he basically is.
- 10:22He looks like a devil. Look at the horns. Uh. And and
- 10:26he may go back to, like you said earlier, being his half man
- 10:31half goat looking thing, because he has clothing hoofs, which is what the
- 10:35devil has too, supposedly, the old medieval aspect of the devil, he
- 10:39had clothing hoofs like a goat. That's why the symbol, a Satanic symbol
- 10:46is a goat, by the way, and that comes up from the Bible,
- 10:48you know, separating the sheep from the goats, the good guys from
- 10:52the bad guys, and then the goats got hu hung with the bad guys.
- 10:56Okay, if you take a look at him, does he not also
- 11:00remind you of something else, the god Pan, which was very well worshiped
- 11:05in a lot of Eastern Europe and places like that, along with Greece and
- 11:09other places as well. He reminds you very much of Pan. And we
- 11:16also talk you know, we've also talked a lot about the cryptid and on
- 11:20as the goat man, which I've often wondered if that isn't some kind of
- 11:26a fawn as they used to call it or a dryad type of a thing
- 11:31that lived in the forest, very much like the god Pan was supposed to
- 11:37be a nature spirit in other words, So here's an interesting tie in Jessica
- 11:43between the Crampus and the green Man. The green Man is sort of,
- 11:48you know, a spirit of nature as well, but he's very prevalent in
- 11:52the winter months, so you get a lot of tie in with that,
- 11:56and the green Man though it's very benevolent, not mynvolent, but benevolent.
- 12:01He's very good guy. He's sort of a guardian of the forest and stuff,
- 12:05but in winter he's depicted as having holly and ivy on him in thistletoe
- 12:11and all that, and a lot of this is very very paganistic and symbolic
- 12:18in that respect. But when I think of Crampas, I always think a
- 12:22little bit of Pan too, because there's a very very distinct similarity. Yeah,
- 12:26I do too. Now, we have looked into goat man on my
- 12:31shows before here at Space on Radio, I had Jason MacLean on one night
- 12:33and we talked about all the goat man sightings in Texas. There's so many
- 12:39goatmen over there, but there's been goatman sightings and reports and since the beginning
- 12:43of time. Okay, so this is just part I guess, it's just
- 12:48part of that genre, I guess, and just the goat man, even
- 12:52though we do have goat man sightings to this day. And as a matter
- 12:54of fact, I was assigned a remote viewing target of the Jersey Devil,
- 13:00okay, And actually I thought what I was looking at, because it was
- 13:03a blind target. I was actually looking at something that looked like a goat
- 13:07man. And that is a present day cryptid, okay, that we have
- 13:11here in the United States. Well, they're supposed to be Jessica, a
- 13:16Satanic connection with that, okay, you know, Mother Leeds and all that
- 13:20was supposedly had some kind of deal with the devil. But here's the interesting
- 13:24thing about the goat man, the tie in with the Satanic symbolism and all
- 13:30that, that the devil is supposed to appear as a half man, half
- 13:33goat. Sometimes that is called a baffle met by the way, and is
- 13:37a very prevalent Satanic symbol you see that of the Church of Satan and all
- 13:43that stuff. And so you're getting into some very demonical territory here. You've
- 13:48got a lot of smell sulfur going on here. Definitely, when you talk
- 13:52about these sounds of nies, especially one like the Grampus, he is very
- 13:58And here's another interesting thing, the tie in to where does he, like
- 14:01you said earlier, where does he take the kids when he kidnaps them?
- 14:05He takes somewhere Hell, and that's where he comes from. So that makes
- 14:11you very demonical without doubt. Yeah, that's pretty rough. I mean in
- 14:16some some of the places where I was researching this today and yesterday, because
- 14:22I didn't know a whole lot about Crampus and I had to be able to
- 14:24keep up with you tonight, Dennis, I had to try at least.
- 14:26And uh. And so I was reading that they weren't saying hell, and
- 14:31a lot of the articles I was reading and things they were saying the underworld.
- 14:33Okay, So I wasn't like hell, but there are a couple of
- 14:37articles I read it was it was hell, okay, but the underworld is
- 14:39hell basically, right. So but yeah, it just sounds worse to hear
- 14:45that you're they're dragging children to hell. Gosh, and you know, one
- 14:48of my one of my favorite Christmas movies. Now, okay, and I
- 14:50love good, good, wholesome, family, fun Christmas movies. But my
- 14:54son and I I know, I say, my son, he's just a
- 14:56kid. But uh, he wanted to watch Crampis movie. There's a new
- 15:01there's a Crampis movie. Oh yeah, and it was pretty terrifying. But
- 15:05it's such a great movie. And that's how I really learned about Crampis was
- 15:09from that movie last year or the year before. Lenus, I highly recommend
- 15:16that Crampis movie. I don't know which what it's called. It's called Crampus,
- 15:18I think, I think, yeah, I think that was the name
- 15:20of it, cramps. He goes after a whole family in that, and
- 15:26it's a very dysfunctional and very bad family and they kind of deserve it away
- 15:31what they get, you know. Uh, definitely. Uh. He is
- 15:39sort of a he's sort of a what you might say, a demonacle type
- 15:43cop in that respect, he's kind of enforcing certain precepts of the universe when
- 15:50he goes after these bad people trying to straighten them out. It's very interesting
- 15:54and the twist and the turn to it with Granpis. But here's one more
- 16:00thing about Crampus that we need to think about, and that is that he
- 16:06is depicted in the early days as being female for a certain extent, not
- 16:12that that didn't seem to catch on as much as the male grampas, but
- 16:17there was a female Grampus depiction. Well that was very interesting. So you
- 16:22always hear about goat, ma'am, and you hear about gold women women,
- 16:26you know, and that was very interesting Ipholt. Yeah, definitely. Wow.
- 16:30Okay, So from what I can what I can recall is that sometimes
- 16:34these characters like Crampus and it's like this in a lot of movies where people
- 16:40families get attacked and stuff, it's because they are It was almost like they
- 16:44got too much into the consumerism of Christmas in the holidays, okay, And
- 16:48that's how it is. It's like the moral of the story is it's all
- 16:52about the little things, not about buying stuff. It's about having your family
- 16:56surrounding you and to pay attention to your kids things like that. Definitely,
- 17:00if you disrespect Christmas, you can expect a visit from Grampus. That's the
- 17:06way that goes. So that's like I say, he's sort of an enforcer
- 17:10of the Christmas kind of a thing, you know, if you keep it
- 17:12straight and good the way it's supposed to be wholesome and all that. You
- 17:18don't have to worry about Grampus. But if you step out of line,
- 17:21you better watch your back. Yeah, you better, or you're gonna get
- 17:25hit with a stick. Now he seems pretty abusive, Dennis, pretty abusive.
- 17:29So he's actually not just putting kids in a basket and taking them to
- 17:33the underworld. He's hitting them with birch sticks and stuff. He's eating them
- 17:37alive. I mean, he's kindabalistic in that respect. And it's very much
- 17:44like and there's been some compassion drawn with Crampis to the wind to go in
- 17:51that respect. Although there are two completely different things, there are some similarities
- 17:56in the way these things work. And one more here's here's another little sideline
- 18:02for you. What if the Grinch and Crampus are our cousins at least?
- 18:07You know, uh, you got you got some kind of monsters. Ain't
- 18:11going on here with the Grinch and the Crampis? Was he the was crampis
- 18:15the inspiration for the Grinch? You gotta ask that question. Oh, that's
- 18:19a good question. I mean, I've actually heard people argue that the Grinch
- 18:25is actually a sasquatch or a bigfoot too. I don't know, tall Harry
- 18:32bipedal creatures, right, yeah, well as far as I know, though,
- 18:37I've never heard of a green fasquatch, but maybe there are some.
- 18:40You never know. But he is definitely a monster monster variety. You take
- 18:45a look at the Grinch, He's a monster, just like just like Crampis.
- 18:49Grandpas is not a good guy. He's he's basically his his his very
- 18:55nature is violent and bad, you know, and definitely it's going to be
- 19:00that. That's just what he is. Yeah. Instead of delivering, the
- 19:06Crampus takes away. Instead of giving, he gets, you know. And
- 19:11that's the interesting aspect of him. Like I said, he's a complete opposite
- 19:15of good old Saint Dick. He is. He's accounible, it's accountable,
- 19:21dude. Yeah, he is a cannibal. Gosh, you know, several
- 19:23cryptos that I've looked into seem to be cannibals, including even the giants.
- 19:27If you want to consider giant humanoids like the lily humans like the giant of
- 19:33Kandahar and the redheaded giants, they were cannibals. Now, this is so
- 19:37scary, and Crampis is so terrifying to some people that it was actually banned
- 19:44in Austria, Like celebrating Crampis was banned around nineteen thirty two. Well,
- 19:49what it was, Jessica. They would have parades of crampus. Parade people
- 19:56would dress upline cramps. They'd come through the streets rattling chains, shaking cowbells
- 20:03and making a very that was scared kids to death. Think about it.
- 20:07I mean that would traumatized children to a certain degree. And they would go
- 20:11through the crowds, you know, chasing children and grabbing children and all that.
- 20:15So then'tly they said, hey, that's you know, you're really stepping
- 20:18over the line here with this stuff. And you can understand where they're coming
- 20:23from that, because that would be very traumatical child to go through that.
- 20:27Look how many children get scared just sitting on Santa's lap think about the crampis.
- 20:33Well, how scary that would be. Yeah, I agree one hundred
- 20:37percent. You know, in the nineteen fifties, the government, I believe
- 20:41this was in Austria, they distributed pamphlests titled Crampis is an Evil Man for
- 20:48fear that encounters with Crampus might damage children's mental health, speaking of mental health
- 20:52for the kids. So but towards the end of the century, a popular
- 20:56reservance of Crampus celebrations kick back, uh, check back up. And now
- 21:02there's like parades all over the country. Now, I mean I actually was
- 21:04driving down the road this afternoon or this today, uh, and or maybe
- 21:10I guess it was jesuree it was yesterday and uh, and there was somebody
- 21:12dressed up like Crampis walking on this on the town square. Where in town
- 21:18do we live? We know? Uh, that's the interesting thing about it,
- 21:23Jessica. Uh. Uh, there is sort of a lot of people
- 21:29associate some parts of Christmas with horror. You know, you have the heart,
- 21:33you have different horror movies that you know, like Silent Night, Bloody
- 21:36Night, and all these other horror movies that they Christmas has a and I've
- 21:40talked about this before, Christmas has a dark side to it. Okay,
- 21:45it has a dark, magical, paganistic now uh, you know, kind
- 21:49of unnatural side to it, mystical kind of a feel to it. And
- 21:53some people find that enticing. You know that that entices some people. And
- 22:00of course we've always like it's just human to have fun, getting scared in
- 22:04a certain way, as long as you know that the that the scare,
- 22:08what's scaring you is not real or it's not gonna really fect you like a
- 22:12horror movie. But we enjoy getting scared, and I think that's kind of
- 22:18a sadistic part of our nature, you know. But but to force that
- 22:22on children is not good really, because children are very impressionable, you know,
- 22:29in that respect. I can see where grown ups would kind of,
- 22:33you know, like Crampus a little bit because of the scary part. But
- 22:37kids, you know, that's the interesting thing. You don't have to watch
- 22:41it with them, that's right. Okay. So when I was a little
- 22:45kid, I want some really cool aunts, my aunt's, my auntie's,
- 22:48my aunts, my dad's sisters, okay, And and when I would spend
- 22:52the night with their houses, I had a bunch of cousins. We were
- 22:55all about the same age, and we would spend the night at my grandparents'
- 22:59house, or I'd go to my cousins and my I'll never forget my aunts
- 23:02would tell stories that would scare us at night, scary stories. And and
- 23:07one of those stories that one of my aunts told me was about the devil
- 23:10living under the bed and that if I put my foot or my hand out
- 23:15of the blanket they would grab my feet at night. That devil was gonna
- 23:18grab my feet. So I was terrified, I mean terrified as a kid,
- 23:22Dennis, to this day, I still don't sleep with my feet outside
- 23:26the blankets. Okay, that is a that's a well known fear. Yes,
- 23:30definitely, the thing under the bed, you know, I saw it.
- 23:37I think it little picture the other day where somebody said, when you're
- 23:41asleep, you do not hang your seat off of the bed because then you
- 23:45in monster territory. So you gotta watch your feet and your hands go when
- 23:49you're in bed. But you know, here's the interesting thing about that,
- 23:52Jessica. I always find it kind of amusing. You know. You see
- 23:56people jump into the bed and cover their head up. They feel so safe,
- 24:00But that's the most vulnerable place you could be. You're not really saved
- 24:03there at all. And if there's something under your bed, what's gonna keep
- 24:07him there? He's gonna come out if you don't want to, that's right,
- 24:11universal Sue. Hey, Susan, this is my friend. Actually,
- 24:15Susan's on my team, my bigfoot team. She says, the underworld also
- 24:18represents the unconscious. That's a great point too, because we're talking about taking
- 24:23kids to the crampis takes kids into the underworld. Well, it's something that
- 24:29gets into their subconscious too, you know. So I don't know that it's
- 24:33a it's an interesting dynamic. Well you know, now, the the crampas
- 24:40equivalent in Spain actually naps and listen to this, this is weird. Actually
- 24:45kidnaps the children, the bad children, and takes them to his coal mine
- 24:49and makes them work in his coal mine, his slaves. Who oh gosh,
- 24:56that's weird. Cold. Yeah, what about you know, bad bad
- 25:02shoulder and get cold in their stockings? Right that, and there you go.
- 25:06That's where the cold comes from. Probably, but definitely you know.
- 25:11Uh, I'll put it this way, and that's what I said. I
- 25:12told this to somebody the other day. I'd rather sign and leave coal in
- 25:15my stocking than the cramp has come after me. Definitely. Uh. You're
- 25:19getting all easy with the cold people, Okay, yeah you are. You're
- 25:25not getting beaten and putting a sack or satchel. So wow, oh my
- 25:30gosh, Hey Darryl and Amory, Darryl James, these are my friends.
- 25:33I've got so many great people in the chat tonight. I want to thank
- 25:37everybody for being here. This is a this is it's a good time.
- 25:40So yeah, some people there Crampis is their favorite. I believe Amory said
- 25:45that Daryl that that's Daryl james'all. Yeah, he's been on our show before.
- 25:48He's on my show on my channel. But yeah, yeah, Crampis
- 25:52is a is A is a crowd favorite with a lot of people in US
- 25:56and uh and so many with all of these parades and the celebrations, people
- 26:00really get into character when it comes to Crampis. Yeah, especially when they
- 26:06start shaking those chains and then rattling those bells and all that. I mean,
- 26:10it really is very It's a sight and sound kind of thing. I
- 26:14was gonna say this about Crampas being depicted with such a long tongue. Demons
- 26:18are often depicted with very long times because that's the sign or symbol of a
- 26:22reptilian tongue, okay, and so that's part of the demonic symbolism there going
- 26:30on with that and the horns, okay, and being a monster hunter,
- 26:36I always look for a way that dispatched the monsters, and so we'll talk
- 26:41about that a little bit about how do you get rid of Grampa's if he
- 26:45shows up at your house. What you need to do to dispatch him.
- 26:49There's several different ways to do it, okay. And one of the main
- 26:53ways is how you take care of most supernatural creatures enterities, is that you
- 27:00burn them alive. You burn them up into ashes and scatter their ashes.
- 27:03You're not gonna have any more problem with them. That's that's the basic way
- 27:07to take care of them. The Crampis is a little bit different. There's
- 27:11several ways to get rid of the Crampis. Okay. The first way to
- 27:15really get rid of him he sort of take its power away from him without
- 27:18killing him. Okay, if you want to be very humanistic about it and
- 27:22then not be so mean and kill him. If you just want to take
- 27:25his power away from him, you cut his horns off. But I don't
- 27:29think he's going to stand there and let you do that, Okay, I
- 27:33don't know. That's gonna be kind of difficult to do. And cut his
- 27:36horns off definitely. Wow. Okay, So do you think that Crampis could
- 27:42ever have been based on something that was actually true or real Dennis or Garment
- 27:48his stories down through mankind of these these creatures supposed to live in the woods
- 27:53that we're having half man, half goat, or half orses and half man.
- 27:57There's always a symbolism of man being melded with the animal. That's the
- 28:03way you wear little stories. A lot of these other things come from this
- 28:07thing about mankind being part of the animals as well. I find that very
- 28:14interesting psychologically that we would be afraid of something like that. It's very much
- 28:18like the pictures and the movies from all the nineteen fifties with the giant ants
- 28:22and grasshoppers and all that gigantic things scare us too. Okay, giants are
- 28:29one of the big things. And another thing, though, is nature done
- 28:32wild? Nature gone unusual and strange. And that's where the Crampas comes in.
- 28:38He's sort of nature, a representation of nature, but he's also a
- 28:42representation of the dark side of a supernatural, the natural and the supernatural that
- 28:49get together. And he also looks here's the weird part, looks kind of
- 28:53like a man a little bit. So you've got some weird stuff going on
- 28:59with the ambus, you know, similarities, but like I said, it
- 29:03goes back to penn was there serve certain types of sadders that they were called
- 29:08or nymphs, that that had this attribute that they were part goat and part
- 29:15men kind of thing. If you look at that picture right there, and
- 29:18I find that very interesting, it's almost as you you stuck stuck a crampus
- 29:22mask on the head of a bigfoot. That's right, that's right. A
- 29:29lot of a lot of these like that. They have very long hair.
- 29:32It looks like a demonic bigfoot. Actually, that's what that looks like,
- 29:38I think. And I've done a show on this before about the wild man.
- 29:41Okay, wild man is a legend all over the world. Every culture
- 29:45talks about wild man, which may be a racial memory of the Neanderthals.
- 29:51For all we know that that may have been pockets of them that were left
- 29:55and our ancestors interacted with them. Anyway, the wild man is depicted very
- 30:00much like that, have a lot of hair on him, you know,
- 30:03and a very very wild looking looking face and all that to him. That
- 30:07could be where a lot of the inspiration for the crapus came from the legends
- 30:12of the wild men. And if anybody's interested in that, look it up.
- 30:17As some very fascinating research on the wild Man. He's even depicted on
- 30:22some medieval coats of arms. Uh, part of the world. Yeah,
- 30:30really, well, what what kind of relationship does all this have? Cases
- 30:34It's kind of has a paganistic base, right, Like it started off as
- 30:40like a paganistic creature, I guess, but then it kind of bled into
- 30:45like the Christian or the Catholic Church from what I was reading, uh somehow,
- 30:49so, I mean it has it has some because of the I guess
- 30:52because of Saint Nicholas. Right. Yeah, Well, you know, the
- 30:56Church, the earlier church was just that way to assimilate a lot of paganistic
- 31:02beliefs, and that happened a lot with Christmas definitely. But you know,
- 31:07like I said earlier about the dark side of Christmas, there are other aspects
- 31:11of Christmas that we need to consider it other than the Christian aspect of it.
- 31:15But the Church tried to assimilate these things, and usually it was not
- 31:21very successful at it. Uh, And and it became a very strange quasi
- 31:26combination of paganistic and uh and religion thing Christianity. Uh. The interesting thing
- 31:33about Crampus, if you look at him he's a personification of the devil.
- 31:38Okay, basically that's what he is. And uh, the devil is taught
- 31:42of course in religion. He's the bad guy. You don't want to end
- 31:45up with him. He will take you to hell. Or you go to
- 31:48hell with the devil, you're in a bad place. Uh. And that's
- 31:52where the Grampus comes from. If I if you were to ask me what
- 31:55the number one inspiration for Crampus would be deathly on the Christian devil. That's
- 32:04no doubt exactly what that is. Yeah, no doubt. Somebody in the
- 32:07chat earlier had mentioned the joker card in a in a deck of cards playing
- 32:14cards. The joker card looks similar to Crampus the jokers. So that's that's
- 32:20an interesting connection to you. Yeah, oh yeah, there's a lot of
- 32:25represents. Like I said, he's not until about like maybe fifteen years ago,
- 32:30you never heard about grampas researchers like me and people like you too,
- 32:35we would have we would have stumbled across him eventually during the letter in our
- 32:38research. And uh, he was very prevalent back in the eighteen hundreds,
- 32:44especially as where you see a lot of these old cars and stuff from but
- 32:47he comes way back from medieval times, and a lot of subletion on that.
- 32:52But he was not well known until just a few years ago in this
- 32:55country. Okay, but we had a lot at the beginning, like the
- 33:00eighteen hundreds in this country, we had a lot of Germanic people's immigrate here,
- 33:06a lot of people from Scandinavia. They settled mostly in the northern parts
- 33:10of the United States, but some dramatic people settled in the sort of the
- 33:15East coast as well, in Pennsylvania, places like that. So you had
- 33:20a avalent knowledge of the Carampus, but nobody outside of those communities talked about
- 33:23him that much until, of course, our mass age of communication to a
- 33:28law, and then everybody picked up the Carampus. So he's a very popular
- 33:32guy now thanks to that. Oh yeah, well, I wouldn't have known
- 33:37a whole lot about it had I not seen that movie about Crampas. And
- 33:42it was pretty scary because the creature Crampus was actually jumping on people's roofs,
- 33:49and you could hear his hoofs walking on their roof and he would send little
- 33:54trolls or some kind of like possessed toys down into the air ducts of the
- 34:00through the chimney. He has Uh, he has al's just like Santa,
- 34:02but they're bad els, goodls. Yeah, he has bad ales that help
- 34:07him, helpers that help him out with that. And he also has some
- 34:10demonic creatures that also supposedly help him with that. Here's the interesting thing about
- 34:16grampis, how does he get in your house? He does the same thing
- 34:20Santa Claus says. He comes down to your chimney, which is very interesting.
- 34:27Uh so, uh. He has a lot of bad al's that help
- 34:29him though, and they are here's it. Where does the crampis live,
- 34:35Jessica in Hell? You know? You know he comes from the South Pole.
- 34:43Okay, the opposite was from the North Pole. Okay, campus comes
- 34:49from the South Pole. Yeah, but I think he visits he awful vacations.
- 34:52I'm not sure about that. I have to ask him next time I
- 34:53see it. Well, that would that would make sense that he would.
- 34:58He would be the opposite of Santa. So everything is is opposite. It's
- 35:01upside down, room right upside down, the complete opposite. Now. I
- 35:06found this picture really interesting because it's almost it almost looks as though they've invited
- 35:12Saint Nicholas and Crampus into this home. It looks like the mom. Mom's
- 35:15a little weary, but dad's like, oh yeah, you know, take
- 35:19our kid if you have to. He's been bad, okay the parent traditionally
- 35:24are parents scared of crampis too throughout history or just the children. And you
- 35:31can say by that drawing, those kids are kind of traumatized. The look
- 35:35standing next to the Crampus, it's Santa Claus. Let's see all over there,
- 35:37Father Christmas, Father, Christmas death. Moly. So they work and
- 35:43get junction. Yeah, well okay, so but it's basically it's just a
- 35:47story to kind of keep the kids in line, though, I guess you
- 35:51could say it, yeah, basically, Yeah, that was well, there
- 35:53was very much like a lot of other things that you know, if you
- 35:57don't do this, the boogey man will get you kind of thing. I
- 36:00know, you better be good, you don't bad things happened to bad children.
- 36:06You know. They would tell you that very quickly, and you don't
- 36:08want to know what those bad things are. Uh. They would scare you
- 36:13into submission, definitely from doing stuff. And that was the way parents did
- 36:16a lot of things back in those days. Parents still do that in different
- 36:20ways nowadays. If you don't behave, I'll take your game away from you,
- 36:23or whatever the case might be. Uh So it's still going on,
- 36:29but just in a very different way. But I think the people back in
- 36:30the old days were very maginative. Definitely would come over with Crampis and stuff
- 36:36like that. Yes, and here's another way. Here's another way to kill
- 36:39crampis. While I'm thinking about it, the other way to get rid of
- 36:43Crampis is you must stab him through the heart with a holly steak or a
- 36:50evergreen steak. That's the only way to put something like a vampire. That's
- 36:54the only way to get take him down. But it has to be an
- 36:58evergreen evergreen wood, or it can be in mistletoe as well, but mistletoe
- 37:04doesn't make very big steaks, so you better stick with the holly or the
- 37:09evergreen steak. Oh my gosh, that's interesting because holly trees and holly branches
- 37:16are traditionally what magic wands are made out of, and so there's a connection
- 37:21between Hollywood and holly sticks and the magic and magicians and all that kind of
- 37:27stuff coming out of Hollywood. Hollywood, the wood of the Holly is considered
- 37:32holy in a way a very you know, veneretted wood. Uh. And
- 37:37so is the evergreen because it never dies, it stays green home, you
- 37:42know, and symbolizes eternity, you know, living forever, immortality. Yeah.
- 37:50Yes, Barbara Streisan had a song about evergreen and about love evergreen.
- 37:54She wanted to love that was evergreen because it's I remember that very famous,
- 37:59very famous Christmas song Tennenbaum, you know, the Bam Tennenbaum. You know.
- 38:04Uh, it is a symbol that is a pagan symbol by the way
- 38:07of eternity and life and fertility. Uh. It's tied into Easter in that
- 38:13way. By the way, it's very strange Italian, but that was actually
- 38:19the symbol of the God as Star or you listen to that name very closely,
- 38:23this star and Easter, same thing. Okay, that's how I got
- 38:28changed into that Easter. The original Easter had nothing to do with the crucifixion
- 38:34of Christ. I all to do about the paganistic stuff fertility, gods and
- 38:40stuff like that. Yeah. Yeah, that's right. Yeah. So it
- 38:45just it kind of adds like a whole other leader to the whole the whole
- 38:47Christmas tradition. Having something a demon, you know, coming after kids now,
- 38:52because we like to think, especially here in the United States of America,
- 38:57we like to think of it as being Christmas being about the birth of
- 39:00Jesus, Okay, for those who celebrate and for those even though for those
- 39:05who don't, it's just the history behind it, of the tradition, and
- 39:08it's the birth of Jesus Christ and being in that little tiny baby Jesus in
- 39:14that manger under the star Beth Limb. Okay. However, you know,
- 39:21the kids look forward to it because the Santa Claus bringing presents and yeah,
- 39:25my son's never worried about crampis, I don't think before. Well, so
- 39:32interesting thing about that, Jessica, We don't take crampis very seriously in this
- 39:37country, but overseas they do and those other countries. He is a very
- 39:40serious consideration. And that's that because here's the thing about it. Christmas is
- 39:46built around traditions. You know. We ever family had this tradition. Every
- 39:52culture has its traditions of Christmas. You know, Christmas almost died out.
- 39:57If it hadn't been for Charles Dickens and a Christmas Girl, we would be
- 40:00selling a very different Christmas now, Christmas was almost gone. And here's another
- 40:05thing. The church, the early Church never pushed Christmas that much. It
- 40:09was just considered a holy day that you had a church service on and that
- 40:14was it. So all the traditions that we honored today were brought back to
- 40:20life by Charles Dickens, by the way, because they almost died out.
- 40:24And Crampus is part of that tradition in certain countries more so than here,
- 40:30although it's beginning to slowly catch on here, but we're not taking it as
- 40:34serious in modern days as they did in medieval times. But he was the
- 40:39personification of the Christmas demon and if you didn't do what you were supposed to
- 40:45do, if you weren't good, if you were bad, and you had
- 40:50to worry about him because he was coming to see you if you weren't careful.
- 40:55Yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah. Like I said, I wonder
- 41:00if I should put the fear of Crampis into my kid this year. I
- 41:02don't know. He probably his laugh about it. He thinks it's fun.
- 41:07So John has an interesting statement tonight, or a question where does the tradition
- 41:12of leaving food offerings from Santa come from? That sounds like fairy Moore to
- 41:15me, actually there's a connection with that to Odin, the god Odin,
- 41:21the Viking god. Yeah, they would actually leave things out for Odin,
- 41:28and Odin has a big, strong connection to Santa Claus. Okay, the
- 41:32Santa Claus we know is not really the same one that Saint Nicholas, and
- 41:37who was really a Greek by the way, the real true Saint Nicholas was
- 41:40a Greek. But the Santa Claus we know, the Santa Claus as his
- 41:46name was pronounced, is really connected to the god Odin. He would leave
- 41:51offerings to the gods to get their favor, you know. And one of
- 41:57those chief gods you wanted on your side was Oldin, the Boss, the
- 42:02Boss or the other gods. So you would leave it times out. And
- 42:06that's where they also would do that with the wooden shoes. You know,
- 42:07the Dutch children of the wooden shoes, and they so they don't have stockings
- 42:13there, they have wooden shoes, and they would get their presence in the
- 42:15wooden shoes. But that was where that really originates from the offering to the
- 42:21gods. Man, you can't fit as many toys and candy into a wooden
- 42:24shoe as you can a big old stocking. See, I think like a
- 42:29kid. I got to think about how much we can shove in those stockings
- 42:31over there. Okay for front stuff, now I do. Okay. So
- 42:36somebody in the chat had a really interesting statement and it said Satan's cause instead
- 42:42of Santa Claus Le's see if I can find that, they said Satan's I
- 42:46think it was Ron. I'm trying to find it, y'all here it is
- 42:50Ron, Hey, Ron, Satan's class. So Santa is an anagram can
- 42:55be an anagram for Satan Satan? What do you think about that? Dennis?
- 43:00Well, Actually, the name Santa is really pronounced Santa s I n
- 43:06d A. Santa clause means actually, if you go back to the actual
- 43:12root of the word, uh, it means Saint Nicholaus Claus St. Nicholas.
- 43:19That's where that really comes from. I don't know about this anagram without
- 43:22Saytan, that's kind of a far stretch, but it is. Actually the
- 43:27name means Saint Nicholas is what he really means. But that's the way they
- 43:31pronounce it, Santa Claus, Saint Nicholas. Okay, very interesting, Okay,
- 43:37cool, Yeah, that's that's cool. I just I just put it
- 43:42out there because I I just Saint Nick lived in Turkey, but he was
- 43:47Greek, he was of Greek extraction. I have a friend in Greece,
- 43:52and I say that, you know, we well we've got Santa Claus,
- 43:55but you had him first. Okay, I don't I can't remember if I
- 44:01brought this subjet or night. Okay. But in some of the old artwork
- 44:07of Crampus, Crampis is actually on down down on a knee, proposing to
- 44:10women. Okay, what is that about? Why why would he be depicted
- 44:15proposing to women? Almost like it's sort of the interesting thing about Satan.
- 44:24Uh he is known to be a seducer of women. Okay, that was
- 44:29sort of there, and that was sort of their weakness, you might say,
- 44:32And that was the way they looked at it, that women could be
- 44:35seduced easier than men, which is not true, but that's what they believed.
- 44:39And uh so that you said you had to if you were a woman,
- 44:44you had to really really watch out for Satan because he tricked the first
- 44:49woman he so you were still you know, fertile brown for him. So
- 44:53you had to be very careful when he came to the devil if you were
- 44:57a woman, especially, Oh my god, gosh, how'd your kids?
- 45:00How'd your wife? Right, it's a watch out, watch out for Trampis.
- 45:06Yeah, yeah, so better lock those doors on Christmas night just in
- 45:10case just engaged Trampis comes in. You don't want him to go hit a
- 45:15life. Okay, that's a true But now, Saint sat Nicholas is actually
- 45:21the patron saint of sailors, policemen and children. Of course St. Nicholas
- 45:28is a true person. He really did live. And let me tell you
- 45:30real quick. Why ain't got a thing forgives? Okay? He actually was
- 45:35a very He was a very wealthy man. He was blessed with wealth and
- 45:38he wanted to share his wealth. He was a very godly man. And
- 45:43he found out about this man who had three daughters. This poor guy,
- 45:46he was very poor farmer. His farm was failing him. He had his
- 45:50three very pretty daughters and he was going to sell them into prostitution, oh,
- 45:54to make money. Yeah, and well Saint Nicholas heard about this,
- 46:00Okay, so he dropped three bags of gold, once for each of the
- 46:04daughters down the chimney and something I know that they went, they got into
- 46:07their stockings that were hanging by the chimney, and the bags of gold were
- 46:12found on Christmas Day in the stockings, and that's where all that began.
- 46:16Santa Claus and the chimney and all that. Uh. He supposedly saved them
- 46:21from being sold into slavery a prostitution. He was a very good man in
- 46:27that respect. He wanted to Here's the thing about Santa Claus or Saint Nicholas.
- 46:31He represents the goodness in people's heart of wanting to give instead of receiving.
- 46:39Crampus. On the other hand, he gets, he receives. He
- 46:45doesn't want to give, he receives, and you don't want him to receive
- 46:49you without doubt, No, no, absolutely not. We hat him.
- 46:54So many people in the chat today we're talking about they're talking about Elf on
- 46:58the Shelf and Snoop on the story. Yes, he's not my Elf on
- 47:02the shelf. I think he may be a FBI or c I a plan.
- 47:07Okay, I'm not too sure about that. I'm checking on it.
- 47:09Are you serious? The Elf on the shelf he's helping sand on something or
- 47:15other. I know that. And Santa may be the secret end. Let's
- 47:17see I a I'm not you Yeah, well okay, so beater and a
- 47:23tater right. Well, you know the ELFs that come with the Elf on
- 47:27the shelf that that does come. And we have an Elf on the shelf
- 47:30here that shows up at my house every year, and and it really is
- 47:35a good spy. They're actually spies. A lot of people said, he's
- 47:39very creepy looking. He's sitting there staring and watching you all. Do you
- 47:45kind of creaks you out a little bit. Yeah, but it but it
- 47:47actually does help, just like cramp Us, the Elf on the shelf will
- 47:52help kids straighten up, shape up or ship out. Okay, that's what
- 47:55my parents used to say, shapeoverer, ship out because Santa Claus is coming
- 48:00and if you are not and if you don't behave that ELF's gonna see and
- 48:04going to report back to Santa. It's a snitch you. My son always
- 48:08says, snitches get stitches. Okay, whenever that el shows up. So
- 48:15but yeah, he'll be he'll be enter the thread of trampis this year to
- 48:19well, I suppose according to Christian Christmas tradition, the l's help Sanna spying
- 48:25on the kids. Okay, Sanna can't be everywhere. It once although I
- 48:30said he was the original superhero. Okay, the guy could do it all.
- 48:34H that was way before Superman or Batman or you might show that there
- 48:37was Santa Claus. Okay, well he is l. That was part of
- 48:42their job. They wore to watch little kids, found kids and make sure
- 48:45who was naughty or who was nice. Well, the crampis also has l's
- 48:50doing that. They're the bad L's and they're watching the bad kids and they're
- 48:54reporting by the Crampus. Okay, folks, so you want to watch out.
- 49:00Oh yeah, yes, Well it's a fun it's a fun tradition to
- 49:04have these elves out here, and and it's a I mean, I'm assuming
- 49:07it's a fun tradition to have Crampus over there. In the different countries,
- 49:12I mean, there's certain there are certain countries that celebrate Crampus a little bit
- 49:15more than others, I guess, or to acknowledge crampis. I think it's
- 49:19more Austria, Bavaria, like in Germany and stuff, Bosnia, Herzegovina,
- 49:24Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Romania, and northern Italy. That's
- 49:30my that's my Also there's also Christmas Wish in northern Italy, by the way,
- 49:37so then I think her name is a very strange tradition. Also,
- 49:40I mentioned earlier in Spain, Crampus is actually not called Crampus in Spain,
- 49:46is called black Peter and uh, and it's actually been culturally counseled now because
- 49:55people would actually show up in blackface and be him in paraides and stuff,
- 50:00and of course that was very racist, and so they stopped doing that.
- 50:05But black Peter was called that because he was supposed to be a more who
- 50:08would row a boat over to Spain and kidnap little bad kids and take them
- 50:15back and work them in his coal mine. And he was also called black
- 50:19Peter because of course he had black coal dust all over him as well.
- 50:23But he's kind of counseled now because he was kind of a racist symbol.
- 50:28People were doing the black faced things of the parade and all that, so
- 50:30they stopped that now, so he may be called Crampus from now on in
- 50:35Spain. I guess, well that kind of sucks. I'm just saying.
- 50:38I know he was covered in soot, Okay, so I know, we're
- 50:42just we live in a different world, different culture, different you know.
- 50:49So yeah, it's you know, it is what it is. It is
- 50:52what it is. That's the worst thing ever to get covered in soot.
- 50:55By the way, Look look who else is covered in soot? Pantaclaus he
- 51:00comes down. Of course, there's the other similarity as well. That's right.
- 51:07Crib Deville has a good point too, heye, crimp Deville. Uh,
- 51:09he says, interesting connection to the whole child abduction thing and other stuff
- 51:13going on today. That's a great thing. Yeah, I've also heard correlation
- 51:19between that and alien abduction as well. Uh, what's going on with that,
- 51:22you know, is that here's the interesting thing just go about that,
- 51:28uh, the fairy abduction of the crampus, subductions and stuff like that.
- 51:32And you could also look upon crampus as being some type of a fairy like
- 51:37creature as well, or the fay. But here's the interesting correlation between that
- 51:42and alien abduction. We have that now in the modern world. Alien abduction
- 51:46and stuff like that, and even child abduction going on with all these you
- 51:51know, rings that are kidnapping children. You've got that going on in the
- 51:54world day. So now it's no longer fairies and Grampus is gone, grab
- 51:59you. There could be some loty worse in that respect, That's right.
- 52:04Yeah, I mean I always say I'm I'm a little more concerned about humans
- 52:07today than I am cryptids. Okay, there you go. Yeah, we
- 52:13live in a really crazy world, really crazy world right now. So that
- 52:16you know, I said not long ago on my podcast, we grew up
- 52:20as kids watch watching monster movies and knowing about the monsters rigging sign and all
- 52:25the rest of them. And but we grew up to find out one very
- 52:29startling fact. There are the monsters are real, but they are us,
- 52:36and that's what we have to really watch out for. We are we are
- 52:38the embodiment of Saint Nicholas in Crampus. It depends on it depends on if
- 52:44I have my coffee in the morning. I could be crampus. I could
- 52:46be cramped. I canna be crabby, but uh yeah, but not,
- 52:52I don't. I don't like to see myself as being demonic if I hadn't
- 52:53had coffee. Okay, it's not that bad. Your cramp is till you
- 52:58get the coffee and then your cycle. That's right, that's right. Yeah,
- 53:02this side, this is a physical here here's a big thing. It
- 53:07been a parapsychologist. I like to look at what this effect has on the
- 53:12human mind. Okay. And here's the interesting thing, the symbolism going on
- 53:16here. Okay, look at the good attributes of Santa Claus versus the Crampus.
- 53:22Okay, those are really personifications of human nature. There's a good side
- 53:30of us, and there's a bad side of us. There's a Santa side
- 53:34of us, and there's a Crampus side of us. So let's hope that
- 53:37we keep the Santa side on the top, okay, where it needs to
- 53:43be, and not the other way around. Yeah, it's some there's always
- 53:46an it seems like an inversion or something to it, so which we have
- 53:52not really recognized here in the United States where we live. But however,
- 53:55we have people from all over the world in our chat right now. I'm
- 53:59pretty sure we have. I don't see Jorgan in here tonight, okay,
- 54:01but we have people from all over that watch our shows, that tune into
- 54:05Space Out Radio every every night, every weekend, every weekday. And uh,
- 54:09and so I'm sure there's some people that grew up fearing Crampus when they
- 54:14were kids that are watching this, Dennis, And uh, and I am
- 54:16just very thankful. I was not one of those very very thankful. So
- 54:23yeah, well, oh my gosh, Dennis, this is crazy. We've
- 54:28come to the end of the hour almost do we have? It goes by
- 54:32so fast when we're having fun, it really does. It does. Final
- 54:38thoughts on crampis. And because I know that you went over, how we
- 54:44can you know, get rid of crampis? And I've never heard that before.
- 54:47This is brand new information. Uh. It's a number real, number
- 54:52one way, the number one way to keep crampus out of your house.
- 54:55Okay, if you're if you're worried about Grampus, show it up. Uh.
- 55:00Is mistletoe hung over your doors okay, the front and your back doors
- 55:06or how many doors you have, always hang mistletoe over him. It's a
- 55:10venerated holy wood is supposedly Crampus hates it, okay, without a doubt.
- 55:16And if you have that hanging in your house, you probably won't get a
- 55:20visit from him. Okay, So go get you some mistletoe, get some
- 55:25missletoe, and stay locked and loaded. Kidding, but it's not only just
- 55:30for kissing other Okay, it's keep it out crampus as well. Oh my
- 55:35gosh, it is. Okay, So mistletoe is a great way to keep
- 55:40crampus away, amplus, I mean he won't he won't come into your house.
- 55:44You don't have kids, right right, Yeah, hopefully if you've got
- 55:49kids, though, you might be open territory for him if you don't careful.
- 55:52But the mistletoe, actually, mistletoe is against all evild spirits, and
- 55:58crampus is definitely in e old spirit. I always keep mistletoe over my doors.
- 56:04It's sort of a safeguard there. But yeah, definitely, it's not
- 56:07just for kissing anymore. It's for grampus. Keep it out crampas Yeah,
- 56:13getting out, getting that Hollywood stick, the Hollywood and yeah, you got
- 56:17to fight back with these things, okay. And you're you're also a demonologist
- 56:22dentist, so I thought this was a really cool topic for you to come
- 56:25on here tonight to talk about because you deal with demonology and and people who
- 56:30are possessed and things like this. So great, great discussion tonight, Dennis.
- 56:36I appreciate you being here tonight. Oh my pleasure always very much.
