- 0:00Dayna Roselli: It's episode 278 of Vegas Revealed, and today we explore Chinatown.
- 0:06Sean McAllister: From delicious dumplings to sauerkraut fish.
- 0:09Sean McAllister: Yes, you heard that right.
- 0:11Sean McAllister: We dive into it all.
- 0:13Sean McAllister: Plus, for all those people who say Vegas has lost its value, well, you haven't been to Chinatown Vegas.
- 0:20Dayna Roselli: All that coming up now on Vegas Revealed.
- 0:23SPEAKER_02: Vegas Revealed, presented by Galindo Law, starts now.
- 0:28Dayna Roselli: Welcome to episode 278 of Vegas Revealed.
- 0:32Dayna Roselli: We told you last week we are going to concentrate on Chinatown Vegas this week because we went there to explore for a TV show recently, and we were blown away.
- 0:41Dayna Roselli: As much as we knew about Chinatown, we learned so much more.
- 0:46Sean McAllister: Well, it's because I mean, I had never, and I don't know that you had either, gotten like parked, gotten out of the car, and actually walked around to the different plazas that they have over there at Chinatown.
- 0:59Sean McAllister: And it's not until you do that that you realize how much is packed in there.
- 1:05Dayna Roselli: I know.
- 1:06Dayna Roselli: So much.
- 1:06Dayna Roselli: We were like, wow.
- 1:08Dayna Roselli: And then we were talking to folks there, and they were saying this is the highest concentration of restaurants in China, is in Chinatown.
- 1:16Dayna Roselli: And I'm like, really?
- 1:17Dayna Roselli: And then they're like, yeah, there's over three miles, and and then what, over 150 restaurants?
- 1:24Sean McAllister: Yeah, I think they're getting close to 200 now.
- 1:27Dayna Roselli: It's insane.
- 1:28Dayna Roselli: And they don't only have like Chinese food.
- 1:31Dayna Roselli: You know, there's there's Japanese, there's Mexican-inspired restaurants there, there's French, Spanish.
- 1:37Dayna Roselli: So it's all within Chinatown.
- 1:40Dayna Roselli: There's a focus on, you know, the certain cuisines, but you will find other uh types of food as well.
- 1:48Sean McAllister: And it's not just restaurants either.
- 1:50Sean McAllister: There's supermarkets, there's lounges, there's dispensaries, there's shooting ranges, there's a wide variety of businesses that are uh that call Chinatown home.
- 2:04Sean McAllister: And it is definitely worth exploring.
- 2:07Sean McAllister: So that's why we're bringing you this episode today.
- 2:09Dayna Roselli: Um by the way, it's Dana and Sean.
- 2:11Dayna Roselli: I don't think I welcomed and said our names, but you know, I mean, if you listen to us, you know who we are.
- 2:17Dayna Roselli: Still us.
- 2:17Dayna Roselli: If you're new to the show, hey, Dana Roselli and Sean McAllister here.
- 2:21Dayna Roselli: Uh thanks for joining us.
- 2:22Dayna Roselli: We appreciate it.
- 2:23Dayna Roselli: Remember, you can always text us questions, uh, something you want us to do a topic on, anything.
- 2:28Dayna Roselli: We have a link in our show notes.
- 2:30Dayna Roselli: Text us.
- 2:30Dayna Roselli: It does not reveal your phone number or your name or anything like that.
- 2:34Dayna Roselli: Um I think just location.
- 2:37Dayna Roselli: So feel free.
- 2:38Sean McAllister: And and by the way, if you have had an experience at Chinatown, Vegas, and have a spot that you think other people should know about, we're gonna dive into a handful of different spots in this episode, but there are so many and there is so much exploring left for us to do over there as well.
- 2:58Sean McAllister: So if you have ideas, uh click that link down in our show notes and send your thoughts to us.
- 3:04Dayna Roselli: Yeah, and so this uh Chinatown location is just to the west of the Las Vegas Strip, not very far at all.
- 3:12Dayna Roselli: And so it's easy to get to if you're visiting us as well.
- 3:15Dayna Roselli: If you're a local, you know where it is.
- 3:17Dayna Roselli: It's along Spring Mountain, kind of goes all the way up to Rainbow.
- 3:21Dayna Roselli: It's around Spring Mountain.
- 3:22Dayna Roselli: So the main focus is on Spring Mountain Road, but there are other little sections as well.
- 3:26Dayna Roselli: And like we just said, it's over three miles of restaurants and businesses, so there's a lot going on there.
- 3:34Dayna Roselli: We started over at Shanghai Plaza, which is a beautiful and newer plaza that they have there that is always packed.
- 3:41Dayna Roselli: The parking lot is always full.
- 3:43Dayna Roselli: I feel like no matter what time of day I go, but we started out there at uh 11 a.m.
- 3:48Dayna Roselli: and that's when most of the restaurants open.
- 3:50Dayna Roselli: And when we pulled in, the it was already like full.
- 3:54Sean McAllister: People were waiting to get into these places.
- 3:57Dayna Roselli: It's so popular.
- 3:59Dayna Roselli: Yeah, we're gonna it's so we learned a lot.
- 4:02Dayna Roselli: We're gonna get to Shanghai taste in a in a minute.
- 4:05Dayna Roselli: We went there for dumplings, but we also learned about a brand, a newer spot that just opened there that is popular around the world, and it's called Fish With You.
- 4:15Sean McAllister: Yeah, they have more than 2,500 locations around the world.
- 4:19Sean McAllister: It's a restaurant chain that started in China, and it has been a hit everywhere that they have opened a restaurant.
- 4:28Sean McAllister: They opened uh late spring um here in Las Vegas, and people have already fallen in love with it.
- 4:37Sean McAllister: Now, here's the thing Yeah, when you hear it, their specialty is sauerkraut fish, but it's not like soup.
- 4:47Sean McAllister: Yeah, sauerkraut fish soup.
- 4:49Sean McAllister: So, but it's not like I don't know.
- 4:52Sean McAllister: I think of like corned beef and sauerkraut for like corned beef and cabbage, like that kind of thing.
- 5:00Sean McAllister: It's not like that at all.
- 5:03Sean McAllister: Yeah, yeah.
- 5:04Sean McAllister: It's not like that.
- 5:05Sean McAllister: It's different, it's different, and people love it.
- 5:07Dayna Roselli: So here's the deal.
- 5:08Dayna Roselli: So when you hear that, you're like, so then I went to the the Google reviews, right?
- 5:12Dayna Roselli: It's already like like literally almost five star from like 40 reviewers since it's open.
- 5:18Dayna Roselli: And everyone says the same thing.
- 5:19Dayna Roselli: Like, I was hesitant at first, right?
- 5:21Dayna Roselli: And then they're like, wow, I am so glad I tried it.
- 5:25Dayna Roselli: Um, it was delicious, and so they focus, like you said, on sauerkraut soups, but they have other lemon soups and spicy soups and tomato soups, and you know, I couldn't tell you the whole menu because there's a lot of different choices, but most people said whatever I ordered, um, it was fantastic.
- 5:46Dayna Roselli: Came with someone was saying it came with a side of rice, other people different noodles, and they loved it.
- 5:51Dayna Roselli: Like everyone's like blown away, and they're like, all this, I got all this food, it big portions were like under 16 bucks.
- 5:58Dayna Roselli: So it's affordable too.
- 5:59Dayna Roselli: And when we walked in there, it's so cute.
- 6:01Dayna Roselli: It's like orange and white, and it's so clean, it's so pretty in there.
- 6:06Dayna Roselli: It just it's such a great little relaxing spot.
- 6:09Sean McAllister: It is.
- 6:10Sean McAllister: It didn't feel like you were walking into a Las Vegas restaurant.
- 6:13Sean McAllister: You could tell that this was a place that it felt like a you're walking into a Chinese restaurant, which you are.
- 6:21Dayna Roselli: You have to go look around, you guys, and look at this menu and look at some of the pictures.
- 6:26Dayna Roselli: And if you want to see more, we have video on our YouTube page uh from that specialty show that we did on Chinatown.
- 6:32Dayna Roselli: But uh Fish With You is what it's called.
- 6:34Dayna Roselli: We stopped over there.
- 6:35Dayna Roselli: Um, we met the the owner, the guy who's running it over there.
- 6:39Dayna Roselli: He was so nice.
- 6:39Dayna Roselli: He was so excited to be here in Chinatown, Vegas, and so welcome.
- 6:44Sean McAllister: And when you're over there in Shanghai Plaza, just look for the happy orange fish with a big smile.
- 6:51Sean McAllister: He's waving his flipper at you, and that is where Fish With You is.
- 6:55Dayna Roselli: Yeah, and they're open long, 11 a.m.
- 6:57Dayna Roselli: to uh 9 30 p.m.
- 6:59Dayna Roselli: So you can go lunch, dinner, snack, whatever you want.
- 7:02Sean McAllister: Yeah.
- 7:03Sean McAllister: Uh another place that we stopped also in Shanghai Plaza is called Shanghai Taste.
- 7:11Sean McAllister: And their specialty are soup dumplings.
- 7:15Dayna Roselli: So good.
- 7:16Dayna Roselli: We were stuffed.
- 7:18Dayna Roselli: We went there first, and they're like, try this, try that.
- 7:21Dayna Roselli: And we were like, I don't even know how we're gonna hit four other restaurants, but here we go.
- 7:25Dayna Roselli: Because I couldn't just have one.
- 7:28Sean McAllister: Because they were so good.
- 7:29Sean McAllister: There and there were different varieties.
- 7:30Sean McAllister: There was the classic pork stuffing, they had the crab.
- 7:34Sean McAllister: Oh, so good.
- 7:36Dayna Roselli: So let's take you there right now and find out more about Shanghai taste and what makes it so special.
- 7:42Sean McAllister: All right, going in.
- 7:48SPEAKER_01: 3,000 dumplings a day, seven days a week.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: We're busy from the minute we opened.
- 7:53SPEAKER_01: There's a wheat, so we close with a wheat.
- 7:55SPEAKER_01: Shanghai Tastes is an authentic Shanghanese restaurant.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: Our only goal since the inception of the concept has been to uh be authentic, source the best quality products we could get, and have it cooked by skilled chefs.
- 8:08SPEAKER_01: We're having a James Beer nominated chef, we do buy the best stuff we can get, and every single thing about this restaurant is from Shanghai.
- 8:17SPEAKER_01: Our bowls, our cups, our forks, our spoons, our saucers, our uniforms.
- 8:21SPEAKER_03: Explain a dumpling.
- 8:22SPEAKER_03: I know it sounds silly, but I've eaten with people and I said, let's get the dumplings, and they're like, Well, what's that?
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 8:27SPEAKER_01: Well, as an Italian, if you know like a tortellini or even a ravioli, if you imagine a ravioli wrapper and they put our ingredients inside, they close it, and then they steam it, and in six minutes it has soup inside.
- 8:39SPEAKER_01: Well, we use Dungeness Crab blown in four days a week.
- 8:42SPEAKER_01: We pick it up at the airport.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: We go through probably 50 to 60 pounds every day.
- 8:47SPEAKER_01: We use our pork blends for the traditional ones.
- 8:50SPEAKER_01: So our cut, our grind, and the actual pork that we use is uh specific to us.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: But basically, they come in here, they order them, we stuff them like what she's doing right now, steam them right back there, and then they'll eat them, and that's it.
- 9:05Sean McAllister: I can't wait to go back and have more dumplings because those really were so good.
- 9:10Dayna Roselli: Well, we talked about the parking being packed over there.
- 9:12Dayna Roselli: Don't let that deter you because guess what?
- 9:14Dayna Roselli: They're already expanding.
- 9:15Dayna Roselli: Apparently, there um are there are plans for uh a parking garage.
- 9:19Dayna Roselli: It's actually in the works right now, and so that will be good for I think Shanghai Plaza because there's so much going on there, so many different restaurants, the ice cream shot, like all sorts of stuff.
- 9:29Sean McAllister: Yeah, I think they said a four-story parking garage.
- 9:32Sean McAllister: So that should be it can fit a lot of cars.
- 9:35Sean McAllister: They're also uh working on getting a a crosswalk across Spring Mountain Road so that you know you can safely get from one side to the other.
- 9:45Sean McAllister: And um, that'll be a a good addition over there as well.
- 9:51Dayna Roselli: So let's go across the street now and check out a cheesa.
- 9:54Dayna Roselli: This restaurant has been there like 25 years, going strong, and they focus and uh specialize in Japanese breakfast.
- 10:03Sean McAllister: Yeah, they started serving Japanese breakfast.
- 10:05Sean McAllister: This is also a a sake lounge and they're open late night.
- 10:09Sean McAllister: Uh, but we were intrigued by the Japanese breakfast, so we stopped in to see what it was all about.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: We are uh the first Japanese style Izaka in Las Vegas, which is tapas.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: We have a little bit of like uh small dishes.
- 10:26SPEAKER_00: We are serving dinner menu from 5 p.m.
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: till 5 a.m.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: and the breakfast are 5 a.m.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: till 11am.
- 10:34SPEAKER_00: This is our uh Japanese style of breakfast menu or the dishes.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: Uh mainly we have one main protein with the basis soup and rice, uh little bit of the size pickles colors, like we always have a couple size dishes too.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Uh weekends we do get some like from the nightclub or like people, nightlife people like come here as well too.
- 11:01Dayna Roselli: This was great.
- 11:02Dayna Roselli: Another thing we learned about Chinatown, the restaurants stay open really, really late.
- 11:07Dayna Roselli: So if you're that second shifter, if you want to end the night somewhere, if you want to start the day, they this a cheesa restaurant on Spring Mountain is open from 5 p.m.
- 11:16Dayna Roselli: to 10 30 a.m.
- 11:18Dayna Roselli: the next day.
- 11:18Sean McAllister: I know there are friends of mine who have been performers in shows and get out of obviously if you're doing a show, you're getting out of work late, especially if you're doing a late show.
- 11:30Sean McAllister: And I they love Chinatown because things were open.
- 11:34Sean McAllister: Right.
- 11:35Sean McAllister: You could find something to eat that was delicious, affordable, and open.
- 11:41Dayna Roselli: I know true, and they have a great menu, a lot of variety over there.
- 11:45Dayna Roselli: The seemed uh she was showing us some she made some Japanese breakfast for us and was showing us different kinds that versions that you can get, and it was also fresh.
- 11:54Sean McAllister: Oh, the salmon and that salad.
- 11:56Sean McAllister: Yeah, the spinach was very good.
- 11:59Sean McAllister: Spinach salad, the rice was delicious, and that is the thing like a lot of the dishes that you'll get will come with sides.
- 12:05Sean McAllister: You'll have your little pickled vegetables, you'll have the spinach, the rice, in addition to your main dish.
- 12:11Dayna Roselli: See, and you're used to going like if you go to these high-end restaurants, you gotta order all your sides and this, no.
- 12:16Sean McAllister: Everything a la carte, and it's$15 for that,$20 for that.
- 12:22Sean McAllister: No, that's not how Chinatown does it.
- 12:24Dayna Roselli: No.
- 12:24Dayna Roselli: Well, across from that, uh, this is a little bit more to the east.
- 12:28Dayna Roselli: We went over to a restaurant that also had a line.
- 12:33Dayna Roselli: Folks were there at lunchtime waiting for their favorite sando.
- 12:37Dayna Roselli: And apparently you have to get it while it's hot because they can run out because the bread that they make these sandos with is so popular.
- 12:44Dayna Roselli: And I had to look up sando and learn all about it, but it's just kind of like the shortened version of a sandwich.
- 12:49Sean McAllister: Oh yeah, it's like a Japanese sandwich, Japanese inspired.
- 12:53Sean McAllister: Uh, Gue Plus Social is the place we're talking about.
- 12:58Sean McAllister: And they are, they're a sando spot by day, but then on weekend evenings, they switch over and do uh really upscale Japanese-inspired dinners in their speakeasy in the back room.
- 13:14Dayna Roselli: And when we entered that room, we were like, wow, this is beautiful, stunning.
- 13:18Dayna Roselli: Yeah, they also have a little patio out front as well.
- 13:22Dayna Roselli: We went over there and uh learned about all of this, and so take a listen.
- 13:38SPEAKER_02: So we can create other things such as spicy chicken katsu, uh, we added some shrimp, but our famous what we're known for is really the steak sando, which is made of tenderloin, uh onion jam, some secret stuff in there with the sauces.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: But you notice it's been famous for its pipette.
- 13:56SPEAKER_02: All our sandwiches are cut in threes.
- 13:58SPEAKER_02: We actually can share.
- 13:59SPEAKER_02: So if there's two of you, you can hey, let me try that steak or chicken or shrimp.
- 14:03Sean McAllister: And you have two kind of different vibes going on from the front into the back speakeasy.
- 14:09SPEAKER_02: So we're sanding by day, and that's open daily.
- 14:12SPEAKER_02: Um, that's from 10:30 to 4:30, right?
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: You can come enjoy your sandwiches.
- 14:16SPEAKER_02: That's what it's talking about.
- 14:25SPEAKER_02: Uh and by night, this is uh the new social is uh Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
- 14:30SPEAKER_02: Uh it's from 6 p.m.
- 14:32SPEAKER_02: until 9 30 last evening.
- 14:34SPEAKER_02: So it is uh Japanese uh flavorings, but our vision uh with elevated seafood, there's pasta there, like a hudon carbonara with dori egg, crispy panchetta, and a uh uni cream sauce.
- 14:47SPEAKER_02: So you can see the vibe, right?
- 14:49Sean McAllister: And that's a really interesting fusion that you have going on.
- 14:52SPEAKER_02: We're all about just really creating the environment, but really having a partner like Chef Izzy is really the one that makes these uh it's basically the heart and soul of what were our ideas here at Gu Social.
- 15:05Sean McAllister: And so the Steak Sando over there at Gew Plus Social is one of their most popular.
- 15:11Sean McAllister: However, they also have the Japanese egg salad sandwich.
- 15:17Sean McAllister: And it is inspired by if you've traveled to Japan and you go into the 7-Eleven, it is inspired by the 7-Eleven egg salad sandwich.
- 15:27Sean McAllister: And but this, they put their own spin on it.
- 15:30Sean McAllister: Uh, and it was a delicious egg salad sandwich.
- 15:34Sean McAllister: It's served, uh, it's cut in half, served on its side.
- 15:38Sean McAllister: And people say this is like the closest that you can get to the Japanese egg salad sandwich in the U in the US.
- 15:48Sean McAllister: Definitely in Vegas.
- 15:49Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 15:49Dayna Roselli: And it's beautiful to look at, right?
- 15:51Sean McAllister: It really is.
- 15:52Dayna Roselli: The way we were watching them make them we're like, this is so good.
- 15:56Dayna Roselli: Um, and it's interesting because um I do feel like when we try things, it's hard for us, I think, when we're out doing different rest like when we did five, four restaurants.
- 16:08Dayna Roselli: It's like I tried the egg sandwich and I tried the other, but then we tried everything, like took a bite here.
- 16:14Dayna Roselli: So I want really want to go and just sit down and order like one thing to really take it in.
- 16:19Dayna Roselli: Do you know what I mean?
- 16:20Dayna Roselli: Like, cause the egg sandwich was good, but I didn't feel like I really got to dive in and sit and enjoy it because I could only fit so much in my stomach.
- 16:26Sean McAllister: Yeah, exactly.
- 16:28Dayna Roselli: So, um, but it what all of it was really good, and that bread was something like I've never seen before.
- 16:34Dayna Roselli: The way it was so thick, but so soft.
- 16:37Sean McAllister: Yeah, it's like the Japanese milk bread that they have made fresh every day.
- 16:41Sean McAllister: So that's why like Dana was saying, that sometimes like when the bread runs out, the sandos run out.
- 16:48Dayna Roselli: Yeah.
- 16:49Sean McAllister: And the and they also, by the way, make those homemade chips that were like so good.
- 16:57Dayna Roselli: Yeah, like almost like a they look like potato trip chips, but almost like kettle chip.
- 17:01Dayna Roselli: Like a kettle chip.
- 17:03Dayna Roselli: And they put their own like spices on it, seasoning, yeah.
- 17:06Dayna Roselli: A lot of different things there they have going on, and they are super successful.
- 17:10Dayna Roselli: Love to see it.
- 17:11Dayna Roselli: Um, so for food, that's what we did, but we also went to a business there in Chinatown, and it's called the Rec Room.
- 17:20Dayna Roselli: And I was like, okay, this is totally different.
- 17:22Dayna Roselli: But um, our friend Joe that works with Chinatown was taking us around and he said, You gotta try something outside of food.
- 17:30Dayna Roselli: This is a place that's really popular, and people go there to smash stuff, yeah.
- 17:34Sean McAllister: And we're talking about smashing computers, TVs, fax machines.
- 17:40Sean McAllister: Remember the movie Office Space at the end?
- 17:43Sean McAllister: They're all out there in the field smashing the fax machine.
- 17:46Sean McAllister: You get to do that in the rec rooms, uh, smash rooms, right?
- 17:52Dayna Roselli: So uh we went over there and uh talked to one of the staff members, and he was saying, Oh, yeah, we have regulars that come in here like once a week and like get all their frustrations out.
- 18:03Sean McAllister: Blow off some steam.
- 18:05Dayna Roselli: You can do big groups, you can come alone, you could do whatever you want to do.
- 18:09Dayna Roselli: Um, they set up the room for you, you put on some protective wear and like a long lab coat, and you go back there and you smash stuff.
- 18:17Dayna Roselli: Then you and I went to the like the room where they store stuff because apparently all the businesses in Chinatown like pop by and drop stuff off that they don't want.
- 18:27Sean McAllister: Yeah, it's a good community over there.
- 18:28Sean McAllister: It is, but when the yeah, when people upgrade their technology, the old stuff goes to the rec room, right?
- 18:35Sean McAllister: So it can get demolished.
- 18:36Dayna Roselli: So we go back to the back room, and there's all this like electronic equipment and CDs and records, and we were looking at some of the records and CDs and tapes and going, oh whoa, that's a good one.
- 18:49Dayna Roselli: I remember that one, and you know, Faith Hill was back in the back.
- 18:52Sean McAllister: Don't smash Faith.
- 18:53Dayna Roselli: Yeah, there were a lot of different ones.
- 18:55Dayna Roselli: Um, but yeah, people apparently like they set it up and and and they smash away.
- 19:00Dayna Roselli: They've got different would they have like the crowbar?
- 19:03Dayna Roselli: He said was like the most popular.
- 19:05Sean McAllister: Yeah, they had a a crowbar, there were bats, there were uh one other thing.
- 19:11Sean McAllister: I forget what there was something else, but you have different utensils to choose from, different destructive utensils.
- 19:19Dayna Roselli: And he was like, I'm not telling you not to go to therapy, but this is a great alternative for those who don't want to or don't have time for therapy.
- 19:26Dayna Roselli: Just come in here and you'll feel much better.
- 19:28Sean McAllister: It's not gonna get to the rootier problems, but it'll make you feel better for a little bit.
- 19:33Dayna Roselli: That's right.
- 19:34Dayna Roselli: Uh, so you can unleash your stress at the rec room.
- 19:37Dayna Roselli: Um, I was just looking at the hours or open 11 a.m.
- 19:40Dayna Roselli: to 7 p.m.
- 19:41Dayna Roselli: every day.
- 19:42Dayna Roselli: So it's recvegus.com if you want more information.
- 19:46Dayna Roselli: Also, you can go to our YouTube.
- 19:48Dayna Roselli: As I said, we have a specialized television show just on Chinatown where you can see the visuals and packages there at the uh rage room start at 75 bucks.
- 19:59Dayna Roselli: So, and you get 15 items, five medium items, one large item, and all your protective gear included.
- 20:07Sean McAllister: 75 bucks, that's probably cheaper than a therapist.
- 20:10Dayna Roselli: I think so these days, right?
- 20:13Dayna Roselli: Um, but that was good fun.
- 20:15Dayna Roselli: We loved it over there.
- 20:15Dayna Roselli: There's so much to see and do.
