Speaker 7: wants to say about the Republicans too. I don't say controversy,
• 2:30
Speaker 7: but anytime Greg's here, you know, we light up the

Speaker 7: Ozmy or from Capital Market is here. Good morning, sir.
• 3:01
Speaker 5: How are you fantastic? Aside from the snow in.
• 3:04
Speaker 7: The weather, well, I mean with the winner that we've had,
• 3:07
Speaker 7: this is not really there. I mean I walk up
• 3:09
Speaker 7: this morning, look out the window. I had a little
• 3:11
Speaker 7: bit of snow on the on the roof of the car.
• 3:13
Speaker 7: Not even any in the grass or anything. But you
• 3:15
Speaker 7: know it's but I'm like you, I'm over next. Brian
• 3:18
Speaker 7: Hughes tells me like next Wednesday could be near eighty
• 3:21
Speaker 7: next Wednesday. I'll take it. I'll take it, all right. So,
• 3:24
Speaker 7: speaking of which, speaking of the weather report from Capital Market,
• 3:29
Speaker 7: so this time of year, you know spring's not officially here.
• 3:32
Speaker 7: I guess the meteorological spring is here. We switched the
• 3:36
Speaker 7: clocks spring forward this weekend, and think about it. There
• 3:40
Speaker 7: for a moment exciting time for Capital Market.
• 3:43
Speaker 8: Absolutely, and you know, if you were to consult the
• 3:45
Speaker 8: Capital Market Farmers Almanac, the unofficial beginning the spring all
• 3:49
Speaker 8: kicks off every year with the Green Chili shootout.
• 3:51
Speaker 5: Yeah, it's coming up March fifteenth.
• 3:53
Speaker 7: And that's that'll be next next weekend, right prior to
• 3:57
Speaker 7: Saint Patrick's Day. But talk about spring in general, though,
• 3:59
Speaker 7: a capital market. I mean this is and I know
• 4:02
Speaker 7: this because a lot of folks every year when spring
• 4:05
Speaker 7: gets here, they say, oh, I'm gonna get you know,
• 4:07
Speaker 7: I'm gonna work out in the yard and I'm going
• 4:08
Speaker 7: to do this and that, and the place they go
• 4:11
Speaker 7: usually is here in the area is capital market.
• 4:13
Speaker 8: Absolutely, and traditionally we spend the winter months, you know,
• 4:18
Speaker 8: in preparation for you know, a very busy outdoor market season.
• 4:23
Speaker 8: We've always sort of kicked that off right around April first.
• 4:26
Speaker 8: It is agriculture. It fluctuates usually within you know, two
• 4:29
Speaker 8: to three week window. Number of variables, most importantly being
• 4:35
Speaker 8: temperature throughout the winter depends on when and just how
• 4:39
Speaker 8: much product we're going to get in starting at the season. Fortunately,
• 4:42
Speaker 8: most of the spring stuff is all produced in a greenhouse,
• 4:44
Speaker 8: so we do have a degree of control over it.
• 4:46
Speaker 8: But officially we open outside April first. Past couple of years,
• 4:53
Speaker 8: as things have shifted, we may have stuff a week
• 4:57
Speaker 8: or two ahead of schedule or but you can generally
• 5:01
Speaker 8: safely assume that come mid April we're going to be
• 5:04
Speaker 8: full with all of your ferns, hanging baskets.
• 5:07
Speaker 7: Flowers are closer to Easter too, that's always a big
• 5:09
Speaker 7: that's always a big thing too. Talking to Devin Osborne
• 5:12
Speaker 7: again from Capitol Market. But day Island show in five
• 5:14

• 5:26
Speaker 7: you alluded to it? The Green Chili Cookoff Cookout does?
• 5:29
Speaker 7: What do you call it? The Green ChIL It's official
• 5:31
Speaker 7: name Green Chili, the Capital Market Green Chili Shootout. I
• 5:34
Speaker 7: got the shootout. That was the word I was missing there.
• 5:36
Speaker 7: It's going to be a week from.
• 5:37
Speaker 8: Saturday, absolutely, and it is for those that aren't familiar
• 5:41
Speaker 8: with the event, we'll have more than forty professional and
• 5:46
Speaker 8: amateur chili enthusiasts. It is an International Chili Society sanctioned event,
• 5:52
Speaker 8: so the winner in the pro category will go on
• 5:54
Speaker 8: to the World Championships in October.
• 5:56
Speaker 7: That's really a big deal because we have a couple
• 5:58
Speaker 7: of events like that around here in the I mean,
• 6:00
Speaker 7: we talk all the time about how Charleston is becoming
• 6:04
Speaker 7: the kanaw Valley region is becoming like a culinary destination.
• 6:07
Speaker 7: We got at least at least two that I know of,
• 6:09
Speaker 7: maybe more of these events here in the area that
• 6:13
Speaker 7: are international competitions, and they people come here from all
• 6:16
Speaker 7: over to enter their chili's and people locally win and
• 6:19
Speaker 7: they move on to other.
• 6:20
Speaker 8: Places I know at this point, and obviously we've got
• 6:22
Speaker 8: a little over a week to go for registration, but
• 6:24
Speaker 8: we have participants from six different states, so it's it's
• 6:28
Speaker 8: a big draw in terms of, well, one, these folks
• 6:33
Speaker 8: take this incredibly oh yeah, and it's sanctioned by very
• 6:37
Speaker 8: strict rules and so on the pro side, it is
• 6:41
Speaker 8: a very regiment and serious process. And then on the
• 6:45
Speaker 8: flip side, we have the amateur category, which is really
• 6:50
Speaker 8: it does not have to be green, it does not
• 6:52
Speaker 8: have to use traditional ingredients. We award prizes for the
• 6:56
Speaker 8: best booth. It's just a whole lot of fun and
• 6:58
Speaker 8: so we have live music, craft beer, and then starting
• 7:03
Speaker 8: last year the addition of Capital Market Mayhem will be
• 7:07
Speaker 8: returning and that's part of the Regatta Pro Wrestling Series,
• 7:10
Speaker 8: and that was really born out of the triumvit of
• 7:13
Speaker 8: local wrestling enthusiasts. Matt Sutton, Tim Brady and mister Adam Harris,
• 7:18
Speaker 8: and it's been exciting to one launch that event really
• 7:24
Speaker 8: not shock per se, but bring something wildly different to
• 7:28
Speaker 8: the outdoor market, and so we're excited to bring that
• 7:31
  Speaker 8: back this year.
• 7:31
Speaker 7: It was a huge hit last year. I was over
• 7:34
Speaker 7: there last year, as several other station folks were there
• 7:37
Speaker 7: last year with the Green Chili cook Off. And you know,
• 7:39
Speaker 7: I know a little bit about the wrestling business. I
• 7:41
Speaker 7: was in it, you know, for something like twenty five years,
• 7:44
Speaker 7: thirty thirty years. I was actually in it, And yeah,
• 7:48
Speaker 7: I don't do shows much anymore, but I did see
• 7:52
Speaker 7: a lot of people that I knew and they're like, oh,
• 7:54
Speaker 7: you know, I was ready to head home after having
• 7:56
Speaker 7: all that chili and stuff, and they were like, oh,
• 7:58
Speaker 7: you know, Dave, you gotta come come over to hang
• 7:59
Speaker 7: out for a while. And man, I mean, the wrestling
• 8:04
Speaker 7: crowds are always big in West Virginia anyway. But I
• 8:08
Speaker 7: guess I just wasn't prepared that there'd be that many
• 8:10
Speaker 7: people on a Saturday afternoon at what was like two
• 8:13
Speaker 7: o'clock or whatever, at well one o'clock, two o'clock whatever
• 8:15
Speaker 7: that would come out for that event. And they really
• 8:18
Speaker 7: really got into it.
• 8:20
Speaker 8: The yeah, the amount of attendees, and I did want
• 8:25
Speaker 8: to reader. This is free, open to the public, absolutely really.
• 8:28
Speaker 8: The only cost associated is if you want to buy
• 8:31
Speaker 8: either craft beer or a tasting cup for the event,
• 8:34
Speaker 8: and those are ten dollars if you buy them in advance,
• 8:36
Speaker 8: and then fifteen dollars.
• 8:37
Speaker 7: And where do you get the tickets?
• 8:38
Speaker 8: Capital Market dot net you can stop buy our office
• 8:42
Speaker 8: or then again you can purchase some day up.
• 8:45
  Speaker 5: So it's but.
• 8:46
Speaker 7: The wrestling itself. If you want to bring the family
• 8:48
Speaker 7: out for the wrestling event itself, it's absolutely free. You
• 8:51
Speaker 7: just walk through the Capital Market and hopefully chances are
• 8:54
Speaker 7: though you're going to buy something there at the Capitol Market.
• 8:56
Speaker 7: You're going to go to the you know, take home
• 8:59
Speaker 7: some chocolate or some wine or something from one of
• 9:01
Speaker 7: the delicious restaurants that are there. You know you're probably
• 9:05
Speaker 7: gonna buy some but you don't have to.
• 9:07
Speaker 5: I don't have to, but I strongly encourage.
• 9:09
Speaker 7: Because it keep because it pays your salary. And when
• 9:12
Speaker 7: is the cutoff for people to enter the chili cookoff?
• 9:15
Speaker 5: I believe that's going to be this Thursday.
• 9:17
Speaker 7: That would be next Thursday, Yes, yes, a week from
• 9:20
Speaker 7: the day, okay, because they got to have plenty of
• 9:22
Speaker 7: time and approximately give me a ballpark. How many how
• 9:25
Speaker 7: many different chilis you had last year? And the pro
• 9:27
  Speaker 7: and the amateur?
• 9:28
Speaker 5: So last year we had right at forty and I
• 9:30
Speaker 5: think we're on pace to top that this year.
• 9:31
Speaker 7: Right, And we were there last year. I was there
• 9:34
Speaker 7: with our a couple of our sister stations ninety eight
• 9:36
Speaker 7: seven a month and also ninety six one KWS was there.
• 9:40
Speaker 7: Rob and I are going to be there. Steve Animal
• 9:42
Speaker 7: is going to be there because there's food and I
• 9:44
Speaker 7: have I don't know. I talked to Canvas Monday night.
• 9:47
Speaker 7: I don't know whether she actually needs us or not.
• 9:49
Speaker 7: But we put it out there that if you need
• 9:51
Speaker 7: judges for the chili Cookoff, we're there. We did it
• 9:54
  Speaker 7: last year.
• 9:54
Speaker 8: Of the other duties as assigned, I can think of
• 9:56
Speaker 8: coorselines look exactly right, exactly right, and I love it.
• 10:00
  Speaker 7: I am a chili aficionado, I mean I really and
• 10:03
Speaker 7: one of the and I've judged. I probably judged one
• 10:04
Speaker 7: hundred chili contests in my in my career, and I
• 10:09
Speaker 7: will say the thing about chili is is that there's
• 10:11
Speaker 7: so many different varieties. I mean, you know, we you
• 10:14
Speaker 7: and I could sit here and I could think. And
• 10:16
Speaker 7: even when my wife and I make chili at home,
• 10:18
Speaker 7: we don't always make it the same way.
• 10:20
Speaker 5: I don't think I've ever made it the same way.
• 10:22
Speaker 7: Because you try different things, you know, you try to
• 10:23
Speaker 7: put different things in it. And there's a lot of
• 10:25
Speaker 7: different kinds of chili. And this is serious business. And
• 10:27
Speaker 7: as I said, we started off by talking about the weather.
• 10:30
Speaker 7: You know, long range forecasts are just what they are like,
• 10:32
Speaker 7: and this is March we're talking about. I do realize that,
• 10:35
Speaker 7: but long range the meteorologists say that next week and
• 10:38
Speaker 7: in the next weekend looks looks pretty good. And uh,
• 10:41
Speaker 7: you know, you want to have a little chill in
• 10:43
Speaker 7: the air. You know, you don't want to be like
• 10:44
Speaker 7: ninety five degrees. You want to have a little chill
• 10:46
Speaker 7: in the air. And of course you got the craft
• 10:48
Speaker 7: beer and everything that goes along with it. It's just
• 10:50
Speaker 7: another thing, another feather in the cap for Charleston and
• 10:53
Speaker 7: the kanav Valley as a food destination.
• 10:56
Speaker 8: Absolutely, it's been an incredible couple of years, just context
• 11:00
Speaker 8: of our local culinary scene and just to see it
• 11:04
Speaker 8: progress further like right now, like we're just a couple
• 11:08
Speaker 8: of weeks away, I think from finding out if our
• 11:11
Speaker 8: second ever local chef is going to be a finalist
• 11:14
Speaker 8: for the James Beards Chef Chase Collier at a Britzzi
• 11:17
Speaker 8: and it's it's you look back five years and.
• 11:21
Speaker 7: It's insane to me that a town the size of
• 11:23
Speaker 7: Charleston would would have not one I mean with you know,
• 11:29
Speaker 7: and Chef Paul's amazing, and he've been on the show
• 11:31
Speaker 7: numerous times and Chef Paul is amazing and and so
• 11:34
Speaker 7: so it's so it's Chase, Uh, but a city the
• 11:38
Speaker 7: size of Charleston would have not not one, but two
• 11:41
Speaker 7: folks nominated. Of course, you know, Chef Paul won and
• 11:44
Speaker 7: uh and we hope that Chase Collier does as well.
• 11:46
Speaker 7: I mean, that's that's pretty amazing for the capital city.
• 11:48
Speaker 8: We're fortunate, you know, to have Paul Smith as the
• 11:51
Speaker 8: culinary ambassacre, not only for the market, I mean obviously
• 11:53
Speaker 8: he's a tremendous representative for the culinary community statewide, but
• 11:58
Speaker 8: the opportunity to really now that he's brought home the hardware,
• 12:04
Speaker 8: to talk about what we can do to continue to
• 12:07
Speaker 8: elevate and lift up you know, other young up and
• 12:10
Speaker 8: coming talent and it's sky's the limit really with the
• 12:14
Speaker 8: group of folks we have right now.
• 12:15
Speaker 7: Yeah, good stuff, all right, give us the details again
• 12:18
Speaker 7: on the Green Chili Chili.
• 12:19
Speaker 8: Shootout Saturday, March fifteenth, Capital Market starts out, starts into
• 12:25
Speaker 8: four ish Okay. Tickets available at capital market dot net.
• 12:28
Speaker 8: Ten dollars in advance, fifteen at the door. Plenty of
• 12:32
Speaker 8: craft beer, lots of other food. Chili's not your thing,
• 12:34
Speaker 8: hop inside, plenty of food fro.
• 12:36
Speaker 7: And you said there at least six states have been represented,
• 12:39
Speaker 7: I mean the six states, and there is the amateurs too.
• 12:41
Speaker 7: So you folks that are listening to us that are
• 12:43
Speaker 7: locally that may not be professional chefs, but think you
• 12:45
Speaker 7: makes some pretty dang good chili. This is open to you,
• 12:47

• 12:51
  Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean it's it's a great time. And to

• 16:44
Speaker 7: welcome to the show. Good morning, thanks for having me,
• 16:46
Speaker 7: Thank you for being here. And you came down a
• 16:47
Speaker 7: little bit early, and I'll let you sit in on
• 16:49
Speaker 7: that interview there with with Evan Osborne. And I thought
• 16:55
Speaker 7: that that was really really cool that you set there
• 16:58
Speaker 7: and didn't drool when we were talking to all that chili.
• 17:01
Speaker 12: I'm very jealous that you get to judge so many
• 17:03
Speaker 12: competitions and eat all that chili. I will be there
• 17:07
Speaker 12: and trying the chili. But you know, I've not had
• 17:09
Speaker 12: the privilege of being a judge yet, but maybe one day.
• 17:12
Speaker 7: All right, all right, well, we'll see if we can
• 17:14
Speaker 7: get I'll bump off Steve Animal for you. He's more
• 17:17
Speaker 7: interested in the craft beer anyway. So well, all right,
• 17:19
Speaker 7: so you finds just recently released an economic impact study.
• 17:23
Speaker 7: What did you What did you learn in the study? Sure?
• 17:26
Speaker 12: So, you know, I represent union construction workers across the
• 17:30
Speaker 12: entire state of West Virginia, and we know historically it's
• 17:33
Speaker 12: kind of been anecdotal. You know, all the jobs we do,
• 17:36
Speaker 12: all the work we do, have a really big impact
• 17:38
Speaker 12: on the economy of West Virginia. But we partnered with
• 17:41
Speaker 12: Marshall University's Center for Business and Economic Research on a
• 17:44
Speaker 12: study to get the actual numbers of the economic impact
• 17:47
Speaker 12: that construction workers in West Virginia do to help move
• 17:51
Speaker 12: our state forward. You know, we're seeing all these announcements
• 17:54
Speaker 12: for big projects, and you know, the people, the men
• 17:56
Speaker 12: and women that build those projects are the members that
• 17:59
Speaker 12: I get a represent and we're excited to talk about that.
• 18:02
Speaker 12: In the years twenty two and twenty three, there was
• 18:04
Speaker 12: eight billion dollars of economic activity driven out of the
• 18:09
Speaker 12: construction industry. You know, that's direct wages somewhere in the
• 18:12
Speaker 12: neighborhood of two billion dollars of wages and benefits, money
• 18:16
Speaker 12: going into pension plans and retirement accounts, health insurance for
• 18:20
Speaker 12: union members, and those people are really the drivers of
• 18:24
Speaker 12: our communities and this money really shows that an investment
• 18:28
Speaker 12: into infrastructure, into facilities, when you whether you're building new
• 18:33
Speaker 12: or remodeling or maintaining some of our historic facilities up
• 18:37
Speaker 12: and down the Canal Valley, you know, those investments with
• 18:39
Speaker 12: union workers really paid dividends to the state of West Virginia.
• 18:43
Speaker 7: Have these numbers and what was the year that you
• 18:45
Speaker 7: referenced again, twenty two and twenty three? Okay, all right,
• 18:47
Speaker 7: so those are latest numbers available, are they Are they
• 18:49
Speaker 7: going up? Are they? What's your take on the numbers? Sure?
• 18:53
Speaker 12: So, you know right now we're hopeful that they'll continue
• 18:55
Speaker 12: to go up over the less several years. We've seen
• 18:58
Speaker 12: major announcements for different type of projects all over the
• 19:01
Speaker 12: state of West Virginia.
• 19:02
  Speaker 7: Right.
• 19:02
Speaker 12: So, we've got workers at form Energy and you know,
• 19:05
Speaker 12: Toyota's always doing expanding and up and down maintenance work.
• 19:10
Speaker 12: We work in the power generation sector, so we're seeing
• 19:13
Speaker 12: a number of different power generation projects that are on
• 19:16
Speaker 12: the horizon. You know, we hear it all the time,
• 19:19
Speaker 12: the demand for data centers and then the power that's
• 19:21
Speaker 12: going to power those data centers. So whether it be
• 19:24
Speaker 12: natural gas powerhouses, maintaining our current coal fire powerhouses, solar wind,
• 19:29
Speaker 12: you know, it's it's all the above for us.
• 19:31
Speaker 7: Are our members build it all?
• 19:33
  Speaker 3: Uh?
• 19:33
Speaker 12: And that's what we're excited about. So I'm hopeful that
• 19:35
Speaker 12: will continue to go up. With the opportunities ahead of
• 19:38
Speaker 12: West Virginia. I think we're kind of a blank slate
• 19:41
Speaker 12: for for continuing to grow and prosper in West Virginia.
• 19:44
Speaker 7: I don't want to turn this into a political thing
• 19:46
Speaker 7: because I know you folks are you know, a non
• 19:47
Speaker 7: part of this organization, but you would you know, you
• 19:50
Speaker 7: have to be living under a rock if you hadn't
• 19:52
Speaker 7: seen the stories about tariffs and things of that nature.
• 19:54
Speaker 7: Is that something that concerns you folks?
• 19:57
Speaker 12: Sure, I mean obviously if they're going to build something,
• 19:59
Speaker 12: so a lot of material comes from different places, right,
• 20:02
Speaker 12: you know, we always support buy American first. Right, We've
• 20:05
Speaker 12: got still mills in West Virginia and different products that
• 20:07
Speaker 12: are made right here in West Virginia. We want to
• 20:09
Speaker 12: buy here in West Virginia. That's part of our goal
• 20:12
Speaker 12: is about local workers, local workforce, the more you can
• 20:15
Speaker 12: do locally, you know this day, the better it is
• 20:17
Speaker 12: for all of us. Right, I mean, it keeps our
• 20:20
Speaker 12: car lots in business, it keeps our hospitals and doctor's
• 20:22
Speaker 12: offices full, it keeps well.
• 20:24
Speaker 7: These are the people that also donate to your church,
• 20:27
Speaker 7: your little league, your things of that nature, buy and large.
• 20:29
Speaker 7: These are the people that do that stuff, buy the
• 20:31
Speaker 7: signs for the little League fields and things like that.
• 20:33
  Speaker 7: That's right.
• 20:34
Speaker 12: And anytime they need the you know, the lights of
• 20:36
Speaker 12: the little League field fixed, who do they call. They
• 20:38
Speaker 12: call one of our union contractors and they volunteer their
• 20:40
Speaker 12: time and their workers to go out there and fix
• 20:42
Speaker 12: those lights. So it is you know, it really is
• 20:44
Speaker 12: about the community. And when you invest in local, skilled,
• 20:48
Speaker 12: drug free trained workers, it just makes our whole community better.
• 20:51
  Speaker 7: Right.
• 20:52
Speaker 12: Good jobs helps solve a lot of other issues out there.
• 20:55
Speaker 7: Absolutely talked about working with Marshall University on the So
• 21:00
Speaker 7: exactly how did you what was the work like And
• 21:03
Speaker 7: you don't have to boris with the details of how
• 21:05
Speaker 7: the sausage was made, but basically how did you arrive
• 21:07
  Speaker 7: at these? Sure?
• 21:08
Speaker 12: So you know the Marshall's Center for Business and Economic
• 21:11
Speaker 12: Research is what they do.
• 21:12
Speaker 7: They do economic studies.
• 21:13
Speaker 12: They do studies for businesses, for developers, for the university itself.
• 21:16
Speaker 12: But kind of the basis of it is, you know,
• 21:18
Speaker 12: you look at the man hours, the work hours that
• 21:21
Speaker 12: we've done over the last couple of years. You take
• 21:24
Speaker 12: the collective bargaining agreements to the wages the benefits that
• 21:26
Speaker 12: are paid to those workers, and you put that together
• 21:29
Speaker 12: and that gives you the direct you know, economic impact.
• 21:32
Speaker 12: So that's the two billion in wages, the fifty eight
• 21:34
Speaker 12: million dollars that's invested into our training and apprenticeship facilities
• 21:38
  Speaker 12: every year.
• 21:39
Speaker 7: And so that's those numbers.
• 21:40
Speaker 12: And then you you know, there's these model data scientists
• 21:44
Speaker 12: do and then they put these numbers in there and
• 21:46
Speaker 12: that spits out all this other information about you know,
• 21:49
Speaker 12: kind of the indirect job. So that's the car lots,
• 21:51
Speaker 12: the grocery stores, the doctor's offices, you with health benefits.
• 21:55
  Speaker 7: We're providing you.
• 21:56
Speaker 12: Know, doctors and our members and their families with the
• 21:58
Speaker 12: opportunity to get that ca that they need, be cold
• 22:01
Speaker 12: and flu season or whatever the case may be.
• 22:04
Speaker 7: We're talking to Justin Williams again from the West Virginia
• 22:06
Speaker 7: Building and Construction Trades organization, but Dave Island Show on
• 22:09
Speaker 7: five any Live Bright to you in part by your
• 22:11
Speaker 7: hometown baseball team, the Charleston Dirty Birds. Birds having a
• 22:14
Speaker 7: big old party at Ballpark this coming Saturday noon to six.
• 22:18
Speaker 7: You can get your season tickets, stand all sorts of giveaways,
• 22:20
Speaker 7: free mini golf, inflatables for the kids, and again it's
• 22:23
Speaker 7: absolutely free of charge unless you want to, you know,
• 22:26
Speaker 7: visit the concession stand, which many of us do, then
• 22:28
Speaker 7: you have to pay for that. But just to bring
• 22:29
Speaker 7: the kids out for all the inflatables, there's no charge
• 22:31
Speaker 7: for that. Dusty the mascot will be there as well,
• 22:34
Speaker 7: and tomorrow Jill Garin from the Dirty Birds will be
• 22:36
Speaker 7: on the show to talk about Saturday's activities. If you
• 22:39
Speaker 7: need more between now and then, you can visit their
• 22:41
Speaker 7: Facebook page or dirty Birds Baseball dot com. Justin I
• 22:43
Speaker 7: want to ask you about the numbers that we have
• 22:46
Speaker 7: filling these jobs, these construction workers. I mean, we hear
• 22:49
Speaker 7: about West Virginia having the lowest workforce participation in America.
• 22:54
Speaker 7: We are the oldest population and a lot of folks
• 22:57
Speaker 7: that have that are on the on the old scale,
• 23:00
Speaker 7: which I'm getting close most of them, not me, but
• 23:03
Speaker 7: others have done a lot of the manual labor that
• 23:06
Speaker 7: we talk about with these jobs or whether it's coal
• 23:09
Speaker 7: industry or whatever, so you know, their body's starting to
• 23:11
Speaker 7: break down a little bit. How are we doing in
• 23:14
Speaker 7: getting people to fill these jobs in West Virginia? Couse
• 23:17
Speaker 7: there and I talk to my friends in industries like
• 23:20
Speaker 7: yours and any industry. It's a struggle to try to
• 23:22
Speaker 7: find people. How are you guys doing it? It is,
• 23:24
Speaker 7: I mean, and we're we're doing everything just like everyone else.
• 23:26
Speaker 12: You know, we've been for the last several years really
• 23:29
Speaker 12: ramping up our advertising aspects of trying to recruit people
• 23:34
Speaker 12: into the trades. You know, historically it was kind of
• 23:38
Speaker 12: you know my generation, you're told go to college, go
• 23:40
  Speaker 12: to college.
• 23:40
Speaker 7: Go to talk about it almost every day.
• 23:42
Speaker 12: Yeah, and so you know, we're working with we want
• 23:45
Speaker 12: to partner with our colleges, our community and technical colleges,
• 23:47
Speaker 12: because as you know, it takes everybody. We can't build
• 23:50
Speaker 12: a hospital if we don't train doctors and nurses. So
• 23:53
Speaker 12: we have to have the doctors and nurses to fill
• 23:55
Speaker 12: that facility. We've got to have workers that go to
• 23:57
Speaker 12: work in the factories to build the manufacturing facility. So
• 24:00
Speaker 12: it's we have to work together, right. For so long
• 24:03
Speaker 12: people were competing against one another. Oh, don't go there,
• 24:07
Speaker 12: don't go there. We you know, this week it was
• 24:09
Speaker 12: WU Day at the legislature and w and Marshall are
• 24:11
Speaker 12: working together now, not competing, right, And that's what we
• 24:14
Speaker 12: have to do with with manufacturing people, with health care facilities,
• 24:19
Speaker 12: with roads and bridges. We have to be able to
• 24:20
Speaker 12: build it because we need all that. And we're talking
• 24:23
Speaker 12: you know, right before housing. Right, there's got to be
• 24:26
Speaker 12: investments from you know, the state, from private industry, from
• 24:30
Speaker 12: developers coming in here because we are open book and
• 24:35
Speaker 12: I think we can really make a difference there and
• 24:37
Speaker 12: getting people into these trades that are really good careers
• 24:41
Speaker 12: for people, you know, good wages, benefits, a pension and
• 24:45
Speaker 12: you can make a whole career out of that and
• 24:47
Speaker 12: provide for your family and give back to your community,
• 24:51
Speaker 12: your churches, your little leagues, like we talked about it,
• 24:53
Speaker 12: and that's what our members do and and so it
• 24:55
Speaker 12: is it's a good opportunity. We have to get out
• 24:58
Speaker 12: of the mindset that everybody should go to college. People
• 25:00
Speaker 12: should do what they are good at, what they enjoy,
• 25:03
Speaker 12: you know, as the old thing goes. If you enjoy
• 25:05
Speaker 12: what you do, you never work a day in your life.
• 25:07
Speaker 12: And so that's what we want. We want people that
• 25:09
Speaker 12: are hard working individuals who like to work with their hands.
• 25:12
Speaker 7: You know, it's not easy work.
• 25:13
  Speaker 12: You're right, you're outside, it's cold, it's hot, it's rainy,
• 25:16
Speaker 12: it's muddy, you know, but you look around and just
• 25:20
Speaker 12: in the Kanaal Valley that the things that our members
• 25:22
Speaker 12: have built, training facility for the hospital over in Kanas City, historically,
• 25:26
Speaker 12: the Clay Center, they're working on, the TC Energy building.
• 25:29
  Speaker 12: It is it's everything. It's community, it's education, it's industry
• 25:34
Speaker 12: and commercial development and growth. And so the more we
• 25:38
Speaker 12: get to go to work, the more other people get
• 25:39
Speaker 12: to go to work. And so it has to be
• 25:41
  Speaker 12: a partnership.
• 25:42
Speaker 7: And I like and you know, frequently I have people
• 25:44
Speaker 7: like doctorK Cy Saxlebridge Valley on. I have Erict Cage
• 25:47
Speaker 7: from West Virginia State. I have Marty Roth from UCE
• 25:50
Speaker 7: some of these other institutions, and when they come on,
• 25:53
Speaker 7: without failure, they come on every time and they talk
• 25:56
Speaker 7: about these partnerships that they're doing with the business community
• 25:59
Speaker 7: and how they're working with some of these major folks,
• 26:02
Speaker 7: the you know, the camcs, the Toyotas and some of
• 26:05
Speaker 7: these people uh to to train up the kind of
• 26:08
Speaker 7: workers that they need, and in turn, those people have
• 26:12
Speaker 7: to be employed by someone. They're going to be employed
• 26:14
Speaker 7: by them, but a lot of them are going to
• 26:16
Speaker 7: be as you said, justin they're going to be building
• 26:19
Speaker 7: those facilities. And that's what you that's what you folks do,
• 26:22
Speaker 7: that's right, and that's what we need, right.
• 26:24
Speaker 12: We need investment into all the above, right, it's just
• 26:28
Speaker 12: like the all of the above energy.
• 26:29
Speaker 7: We need all the above jobs.
• 26:31
Speaker 12: Like you know, we should never turn down any jobs
• 26:33
Speaker 12: in West Virginia where everybody needs one and everybody needs
• 26:35
Speaker 12: a good one, and so you know, that's what we
• 26:37
Speaker 12: want to do. That's why we did this study to
• 26:39
Speaker 12: talk about how the construction industry really is a major
• 26:43
Speaker 12: part of the economy in West Virginia and the careers
• 26:46
Speaker 12: that that our members have are really helping to move
• 26:49
Speaker 12: West Virginia forward and keep driving that opportunities for their families,
• 26:53
Speaker 12: their kids and grand kids in the future. So they're
• 26:56
Speaker 12: putting themselves on a path of prosperity with jobs that
• 27:00
Speaker 12: have good wages, benefits where they can take care of
• 27:03
  Speaker 12: their families.
• 27:05
Speaker 7: And if you had one takeaway from this study, wrap
• 27:09
Speaker 7: it up at about thirty seconds. Tell me what would
• 27:11
Speaker 7: that takeaway be from this economic study that you got.
• 27:15
Speaker 12: Sure, it's just that there's a lot of opportunity in
• 27:18
Speaker 12: the construction industry going forward for people to get into
• 27:22
Speaker 12: this industry, for these jobs to be there, and for
• 27:25
Speaker 12: our developers and for people looking at West Virginia. We
• 27:28
Speaker 12: have a skilled, train, drug free workforce ready to build
• 27:32
Speaker 12: your industry. So work with us, Partner with us. We're
• 27:34
Speaker 12: here to help you. We're here to be a partner
• 27:36
Speaker 12: in these construction projects. You with our partner, our signatory
• 27:40
Speaker 12: contractors who help train up our workers with journey workers
• 27:44

• 32:28
Speaker 7: you're there pretty much every day. I guess you're in
• 32:29
Speaker 7: the session, not every day. You can only handle so much.
• 32:33
  Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean I couldn't. I can't watch it, that's
• 32:35
  Speaker 15: for sure.
• 32:36
  Speaker 8: All right.
• 32:37
Speaker 7: I want to go ahead and get this out here
• 32:38
Speaker 7: to you, all right, you know you h And by
• 32:42
Speaker 7: the way, I'll say anytime during this interview, Greg, if
• 32:44
Speaker 7: you're upset with me on anything, you may stand in
• 32:47
Speaker 7: defiance and shake your cane at me if you want it,
• 32:50
Speaker 7: will not have you removed.
• 32:51
Speaker 15: Well, I brought a little you know, I brought my
• 32:53
Speaker 15: little thing to be able to say, liar, what a
• 32:56
Speaker 15: little side, little pattle, a little battle, little pat are.
• 32:59
Speaker 7: You said me a text Greg last night, and you said,
• 33:02
Speaker 7: and I'm going to quote your text here, the National
• 33:04
Speaker 7: Democrats are doubling down on being left wing crazy. End
• 33:09
Speaker 7: quote as was evidence. This is my part during the
• 33:13
Speaker 7: President's speech of the Joint Session on Tuesday night. That's
• 33:15
Speaker 7: me saying that part. So you say they're doubling down
• 33:19
Speaker 7: on being this is National Democrats being left wing crazy.
• 33:22
  Speaker 15: Yeah, I mean, I look, I think that what you're
• 33:25
Speaker 15: seeing going on in America and here and especially here
• 33:30
Speaker 15: in West Virginia is a reaction to this lurch to
• 33:34
Speaker 15: the left that's been going on. I mean, let's be
• 33:36
Speaker 15: honest for twenty years. But I mean it it got
• 33:38
Speaker 15: really to a fever pitch during you know, Obama is
• 33:41
Speaker 15: really what brought it. Funds front and center, and then
• 33:44
Speaker 15: the Biden people, you know, kind of just really were
• 33:46
Speaker 15: shoving it down your throats, right. I mean, it was
• 33:48
Speaker 15: the climate change hoax, you know, which was a you know,
• 33:51
Speaker 15: way to create this big green new deal where they
• 33:53
Speaker 15: all made a bunch of money. The transgender nonsense, and
• 33:57
Speaker 15: it is nonsense. I mean, it's just absolutely crazy. The
• 34:00
Speaker 15: boys and girls sports, which to me, the fact that
• 34:03
Speaker 15: they're out there still I mean, like that's supported by
• 34:06
Speaker 15: like five percent of the world, right, I mean, like,
• 34:08
Speaker 15: you know, it's crazy that they're still doing that. You know,
• 34:12
Speaker 15: the federal government overspending, and that's really both parties, but
• 34:16
Speaker 15: I mean the Democrats really stepped on the gas with that.
• 34:19
Speaker 15: Growing the size of the federal government during the Obama
• 34:22
Speaker 15: administration and during Biden it just went out of control, right,
• 34:25
Speaker 15: And that's what this that's what's caused this, the need
• 34:29
Speaker 15: for this doze, you know, Department of Government efficiency. And
• 34:33
Speaker 15: you know, you just heard Trump the other night during
• 34:35
Speaker 15: his speech, you know, rattle off some of the most
• 34:37
Speaker 15: outrageous spending things you could I mean, you couldn't even
• 34:41
Speaker 15: like most people wouldn't even imagine that could possibly be true,
• 34:45
Speaker 15: all these things that they're spending millions and billions of
• 34:47
Speaker 15: dollars on. And so I think, you know, that extremism
• 34:52
Speaker 15: from the left, which which I share the rights reaction
• 34:57
Speaker 15: to being frustrated with it, right, I mean, they're you know,
• 35:00
Speaker 15: they're trying to blow up the traditional family. They're you know,
• 35:04
Speaker 15: attacking business, they're attacking capitalism, you know, you know, trying
• 35:10
Speaker 15: to replace religion with all these other sort of things.
• 35:15
Speaker 15: So I share the frustration. But what that has caused
• 35:18
Speaker 15: is sort of the far right right to come out
• 35:21
Speaker 15: and instead of like, all right, you know, what's our plan?
• 35:23
Speaker 15: What are we going to do? Every single thing they
• 35:26
Speaker 15: talk about is just a reaction to, well, what do
• 35:29
Speaker 15: we do to stop that? And so I'm for the
• 35:33
Speaker 15: stopping that part, right. I think it's just that is
• 35:36
Speaker 15: you know, that whole it's at this point, it's like
• 35:39
Speaker 15: a visceral, like emotional reaction to doing something about it.
• 35:43
Speaker 7: But would you agree, Greg, let me jumping in, would
• 35:45
Speaker 7: you agree that that the right's taking it way too far?
• 35:47
Speaker 7: Many right, not all the right? Yes, I mean, and
• 35:50
Speaker 7: this and what I saw the other night in this speech,
• 35:55
Speaker 7: although this is probably the most out of control one
• 35:57
Speaker 7: I've ever seen, I harken back to a few years ago.
• 35:59
Speaker 7: Would Marge Taylor Green? You know, I think like a
• 36:02
Speaker 7: hyena in there. So Jesus is about as far right
• 36:05
Speaker 7: as they go. So this is not I understand what
• 36:08
Speaker 7: you're saying, but I don't think that we can say
• 36:10
Speaker 7: that the lunacy is only on the left. There's a
• 36:13
Speaker 7: lot of loons on the right too.
• 36:14
Speaker 15: Look, I think what you're seeing is sort of the
• 36:19
Speaker 15: right fringe yell at like It's like, it's like the
• 36:21
Speaker 15: rest of America is caught in the middle of the
• 36:24
Speaker 15: right fringe yelling at the left fringe, right and the
• 36:27
  Speaker 15: left set.
• 36:27
Speaker 7: I'll say that every day.
• 36:30
Speaker 15: We're here where I really do believe, you know, if
• 36:33
Speaker 15: you would look at I've kind of been that. I've
• 36:35
Speaker 15: seen a I've got a couple of different clients that
• 36:37
Speaker 15: have been doing some polling, and so I've been neck
• 36:39
Speaker 15: deep in that for a little bit looking at it.
• 36:41
Speaker 15: But if you would on a scale of one to ten, say, okay, well,
• 36:44
Speaker 15: how conservative are you or how liberal are you? You know,
• 36:47
Speaker 15: with ten being conservative and one being liberal. You know,
• 36:50
Speaker 15: West Virginia, I think America is at like a six right,
• 36:53
Speaker 15: maybe six six and a half. I think West Virginia
• 36:56
Speaker 15: is a seven and a half. For whatever reason, a
• 36:59
Speaker 15: lot of our legislative leaders, leaders here in Charleston, they
• 37:02
Speaker 15: think we're at like a twelve and we're not at
• 37:05
  Speaker 15: a twelve, right, I mean.
• 37:06
Speaker 7: You're talking about Republicans. I'm talking about republic You can't
• 37:09
Speaker 7: be talking about Democrats. So I'm talking about Republicans right now.
• 37:12
Speaker 15: I'm talking about people that are registered Republican. I think,
• 37:17
Speaker 15: and you know this is you hear a lot of
• 37:19
Speaker 15: those really far right Republicans will say, oh, these guys
• 37:21
Speaker 15: are rhino because he doesn't support I think the person
• 37:25
Speaker 15: that says you're a rhino is usually somebody that was
• 37:28
Speaker 15: a Democrat like six years ago. I mean, honestly, that
• 37:32
Speaker 15: is who they are, right. I think I would guess
• 37:35
Speaker 15: that a quarter of the Republican Party in West Virginia
• 37:38
Speaker 15: right now, or at least a quarter of the legislators
• 37:40
Speaker 15: up there are former Democrats that were always social conservative
• 37:45
Speaker 15: that weren't with us on economic issues.
• 37:47
  Speaker 13: You know.
• 37:47
Speaker 15: These are people that take money from personal injury lawyers,
• 37:50
Speaker 15: These are people that support labor unions. These are people
• 37:54
Speaker 15: that essentially were Democrats that didn't support that extreme liberal
• 37:58
Speaker 15: social agenda, but they agreed with them on all of
• 38:01
Speaker 15: the other policies that had been in place in West
• 38:04
Speaker 15: Virginia for eighty four years, which drove us into the
• 38:06
Speaker 15: ground and made us last and everything and made us
• 38:08
Speaker 15: you know, I know you were talking with the last guest,
• 38:10
Speaker 15: is you know brought up you know we're last and
• 38:12
Speaker 15: worksforce participation because we had these leftist sort of economic
• 38:16
  Speaker 15: policies for decades.
• 38:19
  Speaker 7: And I think that's.
• 38:20
Speaker 15: Why you know, you're not seeing that at the forefront
• 38:23
Speaker 15: of this current legislature. You know, right now you've got
• 38:27
Speaker 15: you know, they're they're they're leading with the social issues
• 38:32
Speaker 15: as a reaction to the national stuff. You talk to
• 38:35
Speaker 15: people at the Capitol and said, too, but two wrongs
• 38:38
Speaker 15: make a right though, Well, I think some of it
• 38:41
Speaker 15: is writing. I'm with them on like half of that stuff, right,
• 38:46
Speaker 15: I mean I think half of that stuff is like, hey,
• 38:48
Speaker 15: we yeah, we should do that. That's probably something we
• 38:50
Speaker 15: should do. You know, we got to get the boys
• 38:52
Speaker 15: out of girls sports. And I'm for a lot of
• 38:55
Speaker 15: those things. But then they take it and like keep
• 38:58
Speaker 15: going right. It's like it's like you could, you know,
• 39:00
Speaker 15: let's let's use abortion as the issue. Right, Most West
• 39:03
Speaker 15: Virginians support the exceptions for abortion for rape and cess
• 39:09
Speaker 15: life of the mother. That's where most West Virginians are exactly.
• 39:12
Speaker 15: I'll bet you a quarter to a third of this
• 39:15
Speaker 15: legislature wants to make it no exceptions at all, and.
• 39:17
Speaker 7: Why want the Republicans put it on the ballot.
• 39:19
  Speaker 15: Which is a fringe position, right, I mean it's it's
• 39:22
Speaker 15: you know, I've seen it's fringe.
• 39:24
Speaker 7: Actually, I just saw a pulled the other day.
• 39:26
Speaker 15: Ten percent of West Virginians don't think they think you
• 39:29
Speaker 15: should be able to get an abortion whenever you want,
• 39:31
Speaker 15: and ten percent don't think you should be able to
• 39:34
Speaker 15: get abortion at all, even life of the mother, right,
• 39:37
  Speaker 15: that's the French.
• 39:38
Speaker 7: The minority is being made up by the two fringe positions, correct, Yeah, exactly.
• 39:41
Speaker 15: And so that's sort of what happens, and I think
• 39:43
Speaker 15: that's what drives that overreach where right now, especially here
• 39:47
Speaker 15: in Charleston. Now, you do have some you do have
• 39:49
Speaker 15: some of these people that i'd refer to them as
• 39:51
Speaker 15: center right, right. I mean, these are your seven and
• 39:53
Speaker 15: a half out of ten conservatives that that are for
• 39:55
Speaker 15: the conservative social issues but also support conservative economic shoes.
• 40:00
Speaker 15: And what they're what you hear from them is, hey,
• 40:03
Speaker 15: we just got to get this social conservative stuff out
• 40:05
Speaker 15: of the way, and then we're going to get to
• 40:07
Speaker 15: the pro jobs bills.
• 40:10
Speaker 7: I know there's some out there.
• 40:11
Speaker 15: I mean, you know, you had mentioned I do work
• 40:13
Speaker 15: with citizens against lawsuit Abuse.
• 40:14
Speaker 7: We have a couple.
• 40:15
Speaker 15: Medical monitorings one and we have some other ones that
• 40:19
Speaker 15: that would really help improve the job climate here and
• 40:23
Speaker 15: and there's other organizations that have some out there too.
• 40:26
Speaker 15: Morrisey's got Morse He's got a permitting bill on the
• 40:28
Speaker 15: House side that would be that will be helpful for jobs.
• 40:32
Speaker 15: He's got a licensing bill on the Senate side that
• 40:34
  Speaker 15: would be helpful.
• 40:36
Speaker 7: But I'm with you.
• 40:38
Speaker 15: Though, Dave, and that people look at this and say, Okay, hey,
• 40:40
Speaker 15: I'm you know, I'm with you on some of the stuff.
• 40:43
Speaker 15: But what are you doing about jobs? What are you
• 40:45
Speaker 15: doing about roads? What are you doing about schools?
• 40:47
Speaker 7: And this is where I am Greg, because it's not
• 40:50
Speaker 7: that I don't think that those other things are important.
• 40:52
Speaker 7: I've said it on the show a couple of days ago,
• 40:54
Speaker 7: But I don't think that the average person when they
• 40:57
Speaker 7: get up every morning, thinks about I mean the one
• 41:00
Speaker 7: on the fringe. I don't think that they think about, well,
• 41:02
Speaker 7: what I'm going to be pissed off today about about
• 41:04
Speaker 7: boys playing girls sports. No, they're trying to buy bread,
• 41:07
Speaker 7: They're trying to they're trying to go to their jobs.
• 41:09
Speaker 7: I just wish our legislators would focus on the stuff
• 41:12
Speaker 7: that value that that is a value to every day
• 41:15
Speaker 7: West Virginians, not this, not this fringe crap.
• 41:18
Speaker 15: If they don't focus on it, there's a remedy for that. Elections, right,
• 41:23
Speaker 15: and so I think I think what happened.
• 41:26
  Speaker 7: I think you.
• 41:26
Speaker 15: I think that people elected some very conservative legislators that
• 41:30
Speaker 15: were were just pro Trump. Right, I'm pro Trump, I
• 41:33
Speaker 15: support Trump's agenda, I want to do it. And they're
• 41:35
Speaker 15: up here in Charleston saying I'm pro Trump, I'm going
• 41:38
Speaker 15: to support Trump's agenda, and a lot of the bills
• 41:40
Speaker 15: that they're doing sort of try to mirror things that
• 41:42
Speaker 15: Trump is doing. And some of it you can do
• 41:45
Speaker 15: some of it, you know. I think a lot of
• 41:47
Speaker 15: these new legends, and we've talked about this before, I
• 41:49
Speaker 15: think a lot of these new legislators ran because they
• 41:52
Speaker 15: supported Trump, they want a new direction for the country,
• 41:55
Speaker 15: and then all of a sudden they end up in
• 41:56
Speaker 15: Charleston and it's like, oh, gosh, I'm not in the
• 41:59
  Speaker 15: US Senate.
• 41:59
  Speaker 7: I guess I don't have to tell don't get to
• 42:01
Speaker 7: vote on that. I'm serving out of Wetzel County. I
• 42:03
  Speaker 7: can't build a wall.
• 42:04
Speaker 15: You know, and so but it but it takes a
• 42:07
Speaker 15: little But look, that's just part of this process. I'm
• 42:09
Speaker 15: not against those guys. I'm for a lot of those guys.
• 42:12
Speaker 15: I'm not against them. It's just it's going to be
• 42:13
Speaker 15: a process. So will they be able to figure out
• 42:16
Speaker 15: though here in the next thirty days, which is about
• 42:19
Speaker 15: all they have left in the session, will they be
• 42:21
Speaker 15: able to figure out in the next thirty days? All
• 42:25
Speaker 15: my my constituents do want the social conservative stuff to
• 42:29
Speaker 15: a degree. They want to, you know, reasonable social conservatives,
• 42:34
Speaker 15: reasonable con social conservative bills.
• 42:36
Speaker 7: But what have I got? Am I going to be able.
• 42:39
Speaker 15: To go back in May, in June and go to
• 42:42
Speaker 15: the fourth of July parade and see people in my
• 42:46
Speaker 15: community and tell them, here's what I did to create jobs,
• 42:49
Speaker 15: Here's what I did to improve the roads, Here's what
• 42:51
Speaker 15: I did to improve the schools. And my suggestion is
• 42:57
Speaker 15: a long as you know, probably one of the longest
• 43:00
Speaker 15: serving political consultants here in West Virginia, to them is
• 43:05
Speaker 15: you better do something, You better have something to say,
• 43:07
Speaker 15: and you got thirty days, right, So they need to
• 43:09
Speaker 15: get on the stick. They need to get after it.
• 43:12
Speaker 15: You know, this session isn't lost. You're always going to
• 43:14
Speaker 15: have a couple of weeks of trying to figure it out.
• 43:16
Speaker 15: They've picked up the pace a little bit, which could
• 43:21
Speaker 15: be good if they would focus on some other stuff.
• 43:24
Speaker 15: But they have an opportunity to focus on jobs, roads
• 43:27
Speaker 15: and schools, and I really encourage them to do so.
