- 0:00What if the reason you feel exhausted in certain rooms, it's
- 0:05not the room, but the version of you trying to survive inside it.
- 0:13Welcome to Living Without Fear and Esther, your host from
- 0:18Switzerland. And today I want to speak about
- 0:21something that has shaped so much of my life.
- 0:26Maybe yours too. I was watching an interview
- 0:31recently, 2 strong women talking about business, leadership,
- 0:36confidence and one of them said something so simple, so
- 0:42powerful, so free, she said in her own words.
- 0:48I truly don't care what other people think of me.
- 0:54And when I heard that something inside me past, not because I
- 1:01don't agree, but because I realized I'm not fully there
- 1:07yet. I'm much better, much better
- 1:11than I used to be, but completely free from other
- 1:16people's opinions. Not yet.
- 1:20And I want to be honest with you about that, because the desire
- 1:26to be liked has ruled me for decades.
- 1:31I grew up in a family where insecurity was normal.
- 1:36My parents were insecure. Their parents were insecure.
- 1:43Confidence wasn't something that was modelled or strengthened, it
- 1:50was something we quietly longed for.
- 1:55So what did I do? I tried to earn love.
- 2:01I tried to deserve it, especially from my father later,
- 2:07from my teachers, from friends, from groups, from everyone.
- 2:14I wanted to be the one who was appreciated, the one who was
- 2:20admired, the one who was loved. And when I felt rejected, I
- 2:28suffered. I questioned myself constantly
- 2:33what I'm doing wrong. Why do they love my best friend
- 2:38so effortlessly? Why does she walk into a room
- 2:44and people are drawn to her? What should I change so they'd
- 2:51like me more? Am I too complicated, too
- 2:56sensitive? Not confident enough?
- 3:01Do you know this voice? Have you heard it inside your
- 3:06own head? Even today, in unknown
- 3:11environments, I still notice something.
- 3:15I scan the room. Do people look at me?
- 3:19Do they notice me? Do they turn away?
- 3:23Do they start talking to someone else?
- 3:28And in the past, my solution was clever.
- 3:33I would immediately start a one-on-one conversation with
- 3:38someone next to me. I'd ask questions, I'd get
- 3:43curious, I'd dive deep into that one person, and suddenly I felt
- 3:51safe because one-on-one felt manageable, intimate, contained.
- 3:59It was actually very smart. But here's what I realized
- 4:05later. While I focused intensely on one
- 4:10person, I sometimes unintentionally excluded others.
- 4:16They might have felt unseen and I didn't even notice because I
- 4:22was busy trying to survive. Survival often looks like
- 4:28strategy, but underneath it is fear.
- 4:35Let's come back to this sentence.
- 4:38Not caring what others think. Why was it so important for me
- 4:46that people liked what I did? Because if they approved, I felt
- 4:54safe. If they praised me, I felt
- 4:58worthy. If they admired me, I felt
- 5:02enough. But here's the uncomfortable
- 5:06truth. When you try to be lovable in
- 5:10order to be liked, you're not being yourself.
- 5:15And not being yourself is exhausting.
- 5:20So exhausting. Next time you are in a big group
- 5:26and you'll feel drained, ask yourself something radical.
- 5:32Is it really the group that is tiring me?
- 5:37Or is it the performance I'm running inside myself?
- 5:44Because, believe me, it is the performance.
- 5:49It is the constant monitoring. Say something intelligent, don't
- 5:57say something stupid. Make a good impression.
- 6:01Be interesting, be kind, be helpful, be impressive.
- 6:08That inner pressure is what makes you tired, not the people
- 6:14you. And that realization can hurt,
- 6:19but it can also set you free. Recently I had a two days ski
- 6:27teacher training in the mountains to renew my license.
- 6:32Our instructor was insecure. The group was chatting.
- 6:38He tried to speak. Nobody listened.
- 6:42And I felt it in my body. I felt his uncertainty.
- 6:48I recognized it because I have lived it.
- 6:54And instinctively I stepped in. I helped quiet the group.
- 7:01I supported him. But here's what surprised me.
- 7:07This role didn't exhaust me. I didn't judge myself.
- 7:13I didn't overthink, I didn't monitor how I came across, I
- 7:20simply acted from who I am and that felt light, that felt real.
- 7:30When you act from authenticity instead of approval seeking,
- 7:37your energy changes completely. So maybe the question isn't it?
- 7:44How can I stop caring what others think overnight?
- 7:52Maybe the question is, where am I abandoning myself to earn
- 7:58approval? Because the cost of being liked
- 8:03is often self betrayal, and self betrayal is heavy.
- 8:11Let me say something very clearly.
- 8:15It does not help anyone. Not you, not the group, if you
- 8:21try to be someone else. If you're tired, be tired.
- 8:27If you're grieving, be grieving. If you're quiet, be quiet.
- 8:35If you're silly, be silly. If you don't want to talk, don't
- 8:41force yourself. You are perfectly OK the way you
- 8:47are in this very moment. And please don't misunderstand
- 8:54me, you will not wake up tomorrow completely free from
- 8:59people's opinions. This is a process, an ongoing 1A
- 9:06lifelong one. But every time you notice the
- 9:12inner dialogue, you gain power because awareness is the
- 9:18beginning of freedom. Start listening to how you speak
- 9:23to yourself, not only the words you say out loud, but the
- 9:30whispers in your head. If you are not aware of them,
- 9:36journal. Ask yourself, how did I feel
- 9:41today? When exact?
- 9:44When exactly did that feeling start?
- 9:49What was the situation? What did I expect from myself in
- 9:55that moment? How did I judge myself?
- 10:01Write it down and be honest. Maybe you will read sentences
- 10:08like you screwed up again. You are not smart enough.
- 10:14People don't like you because you're too sensitive, you're too
- 10:20much, you're not enough. And you see it on paper.
- 10:26Something shifts. You realize it's not the world
- 10:32attacking you, it's you attacking yourself.
- 10:38And you cannot build confidence on top of self criticism.
- 10:45So let's practice something radical.
- 10:49Let's practice being without adjusting, without performing,
- 10:57without editing ourselves in real time, just being.
- 11:04And if someone doesn't like you, that does not mean you are
- 11:10wrong. It simply means you are not
- 11:14their person. And that is OK.
- 11:19You don't need everyone. You need alignment.
- 11:25You don't need approval. You need integrity.
- 11:30And the more you become yourself, the more the right
- 11:35people will feel you. Not because you tried, but
- 11:40because you finally stopped trying so hard.
- 11:47If this episode speaks to you, if you recognize yourself in my
- 11:52story, I want to offer you something Ioffer free one-on-one
- 11:59coaching sessions. A safe space where you can
- 12:04unpack these patterns, where you can look at your inner dialogue,
- 12:11where we gentle uncover where you still are performing and
- 12:18where you are ready to come home to yourself.
- 12:23No pressure, no pretending, just honesty.
- 12:29If you feel cold, reach out to me.
- 12:33And until next time, walk into the room and instead of asking
- 12:40do they like me? Ask do I like who I am being
- 12:47right now because that is the only approval that truly
- 12:54matters. And until next week, walk into
- 12:59the room and instead of asking, do they, like me, asked, do I
- 13:07like who I am being right now? Because that is the only
- 13:14approval that truly matters. Stay true, Stay real.
